3. Remove the plastic from the remote.
4. Go through the TV set-up process, including connecting Wi-Fi and signing into your account.

Make sure you've got everything from the Roku box ready: you'll need the dongle, the remote and the adaptor cable.

What you'll want to do first is take the dongle and plug it into the HDMI port at the back of your TV. If you have multiple then it doesn't matter which, but I'd advise plugging it into one closest to the USB ports.

The reason for this is our next step: you'll want to take the adaptor, and plug the USB side into a USB port on your TV. If you don't know the names, then USB is the larger rectangular one (the other side of the adaptor is USB-C, identified by being oval).

Now take this USB-C side and plug it into the port on the streaming dongle itself. The cable is quite long so it doesn't matter if the USB port is far from the HDMI one, and you'll know this has worked if the light appears on the side of the dongle.

Next, find the remote and flip it over. You'll see sticking out of the back a little piece of purple plastic sticking out from the back. Pull this out (or, if you're finding it hard, remove the back panel and then take the plastic out) which will activate the remote and put it into pairing mode. It'll automatically connect with the Roku streaming stick.

For the rest of the process, you'll need to use your TV, so turn on the screen and sit down to focus on the task.

The first screen will ask you your language. Scroll through options using the up and down arrows on the remote, and press 'OK' when you're hovering over the correct language.

Next, the Roku will search for nearby Wi-Fi signals (you can only use wireless internet, not wired) and then show a list of nearby ones. Select your Wi-Fi network and then use the on-screen keyboard to type in your password. Once it's typed in, press 'Connect' near the bottom of the screen.

The subsequent few steps see the Roku streaming stick scan for, and if neccessary install, updates to the Roku player and remote. This'll be done automatically and doesn't take long, however you will need to be on hand to press 'OK' through a few screens as it tells you all this.

Once the updates are installed, the Roku streaming stick will offer to set up TV controls, which lets you use the Roku remote instead of your standard TV one. To set this up press 'Continue (recommended)' which will prompt the device to work out which TV you've got (if you're using one). Select 'Yes, I have a [brand] TV' if it's successful or 'Change TV brand' if it's not to select it remotely. Now press 'OK' through the screen letting you know it's set up.

The final important step is to sign into your Roku account. You're given two choices: to enter your email address or activate your account with a QR code.

I used the latter to set up. Select it and you'll be shown a big QR code which you'll need to scan with a QR code reader (most modern Android and iPhones have one baked into the default camera app). This will take you to a webpage on your phone where you can create a Roku account, or log in if you've already created one. Either set one up or log in and you'll be sorted.

Alternatively, if you select the email option you'll have to input your email address. Then make your way over to whatever device you use to read your emails, find the message from Roku, and set it up with the instructions it sends you.

Either way, once you've logged in with your Roku account you'll be taken to the home page of your Roku player.

Congratulations, you've now successfuly set up your Roku streaming stick. Next step is to get apps on your Roku player.

From Monday, June 30, ESPN will show live coverage of Wimbledon. Due to time zones it starts at 1 am ET / 10 am PT the day prior, up until 11 am ET/8 am PT, and sometimes it's followed by a highlights reel.

From Monday, July 7 it'll instead start at 3 am ET/midnight PT, and wrap-up coverage after the live streams doesn't appear on ESPN's schedule.

Every day at midday ET/9 am PT from Monday, June 30, the channel will air Tennis Channel Live at Wimbledon. This three-hour-long segment will give you select snippets of live coverage of the later matches.

From Tuesday, July 8, the segment will air one hour earlier, and another hour earlier two days after that, so double-check the schedule if you want to watch late coverage for an exact time.

CONCACAF Gold Cup

First up we've got the CONCACAF Gold Cup, which began on Saturday, June 15 and continues until Sunday, July 6.

This soccer tournament sees teams from across North, Central and South America, as well as the Caribbean, duke it out to be crowned the top team of the conference. The US and Canada are co-hosts with most matches playing across the former country.

As a tournament being hosted in the US, you can be sure that the CONCACAF is airing on US cable channels, and all three that'll host the matches are available via Hulu with Live TV.

Formula 1 Grands Prix

While this technically isn't a 'summer' sports tournament — F1 races have been going on for months already this year and will continue to the late months — there are plenty of Grand Prix races occuring through the summer months that you'll want to watch.

Formula 1 has become huge in the last few years with fans tuning in not just to the Grands Prix (yep, that's really the plural!) themselves but the qualifying races and sprints in the lead-up to each one.

Over the summer months we see races in the UK (Sunday, July 6), Hungary (Sunday, August 3) and Italy (Sunday, September 7), with the US hosting races in Austin and Las Vegas in October and November respectively. For a full schedule we've got a guide on how to watch F1 races.

F1 sees through race coverage on cable, not just for the US races but for all of them, so it's easy to tune in.

Wimbledon

Next up we've got the famous British tennis tournament Wimbledon, which starts on Monday, June 30 and lasts for two weeks.

Wimbledon sees hundreds of the best tennis players compete in several strands for men and women's singles as well as doubles, junior, wheelchair and more. The first week sees heavy action with players trying to make their way to subsequent rounds in week 2, ahead of finals in the last weekend.

As one of tennis' four Grand Slams, and a legendary sporting event, you can be sure that live coverage of the event will be available to watch on various channels.

• Wimbledon coverage airs on ESPN channels between Monday, June 30 and Sunday, July 13.

UEFA Women's Euros

All eyes are on the UEFA Women's Euros, which has grown in popularity massively over the last few iterations, and it kicks off again on Wednesday, July 2.

The quadrennial soccer tournament is hosted by Switzerland this time around, and it'll see 16 of the best women's soccer squads from around Europe compete for the trophy. Returning champions England are hopefuls but they've been drawn into a group stage alongside France and Netherlands so it'll be tough.

While it's not going to see any US teams and few players, the UEFA Women's Euros still draws eyes from around the world, and as such channels in the US will be showing the matches.

• UEFA Women's Euros matches will air on Fox channels between Wednesday, July 2 and Sunday, July 27.

The Open Championship

One of the biggest non-US golf tournaments of 2025 will take place over the weekend of Thursday, July 17, and will occur in Scotland.

The Open Championship is a prestigious and long-running cup which constitutes part of the PGA Tour as well as the European Tour and Japan Golf Tour. It's hosted at the Prestwick Golf Club and has one of the biggest prize funds of any golf tournament.

There are PGA events being broadcast almost every weekend, but if you only want to watch a few each year instead of everyone one, the Open Championship is one worth tuning into.

• The Open Championship will be broadcast on NBC and USA between Thursday, July 17 and Sunday, July 20.

US Open (tennis)

From one Open to another; the US Open tennis tournament (not to be confused with the US Open Golf) is another of the four Grand Slams of the sport, and is perhaps the biggest tennis tournament for US fans of the sport.

Taking place in NYC at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, the US Open will again see all of the world's best tennis stars compete over two weeks starting on Sunday, August 24. As the last of 2025's Grand Slams, it'll be most player's last chance to rank in one of the prestigious events.

It's not just men's and women's singles but doubles, kids' championships and wheelchair play over the two weeks (with some exceptions, as mixed doubles as been moved to take place before the tournament). If you're a tennis fan, tuning in is a no-brainer, but it's also fun to check out the bigger games and celeb-spot to see who's in the audience.

• The US Open is set to be broadcast by ESPN's channels between Sunday, August 24 and Sunday, September 7

NFL 2025-26 season

Again, may not quite count as a 'summer' event (which may be a theme for the rest of these picks) but it'll still be warm when NFL returns with the Kickoff Game on Thursday, September 4 so I'm allowing it!

NFL needs no introduction, and the 25/26 season will have a new energy after the last season ended with the major Super Bowl upset when the Philadelphia Eagles broke Kansas City Chiefs' winning streak.

Traditionally NFL has been a little complicated to watch. Tuning in on a Sunday? To NBC with you. But watching one day later? ESPN. You also have to use Fox, CBS, ABC and NFL Network depending on a range of factors.

Know what makes it easier? Every single channel that airs NFL games is included on Hulu with Live TV, making streaming much easier.

Ryder Cup

Possibly one of the biggest golf events of the year is set to be the Ryder Cup, a biennial event which in 2025 takes place on the last weekend of September.

Unlike other golf cups, individual players aren't competing for gold, and instead are playing as part of two teams: Europe and the United States. The former won the cup in 2023 but it trades hands frequently and it's hard to say who the winner will be this time around.

Keegan Bradley is set to act as the US captain this time around with Luke Donald returning as the European one. In a rare twist for a sports tournament like this, the cup isn't played for prize money but simply for the glory of play.

MLB World Series

The exact dates for the 2025 World Series haven't been announced yet, and of course neither have the teams, but we expect them to play in late October. Fox has the rights to broadcast it, so expect to see the channel or FS1/FS2 show it.

The MLB World Series, for those who don't know, is a best-of-seven playoff between the season's best American League team and best National League team, and it marks the end of the postseason each year.

Seven games rarely actually take place but it's a tense span of time for baseball fans as a champion isn't decided in a couple of hours, but across multiple matches.

• The World Series matches will be broadcast by Fox channels in late October

New York City Marathon

Last but not least is the New York City Marathon, which this year takes place on Sunday, November 2.

Well over 50,000 runners are expected to run, following a 26-mile route which begins at Staten Island, passes through Brooklyn and briefly Queens, cuts into Manhattan up to the Bronx, and then loops back to finish in Central Park.

As one of the seven World Marathon Majors, this is one of the most popular marathons in the world, and it's also the last one of the year. Not only will we see some fantastic runners hit the track, but it's a fun community event with people dressing up and fundraising for charity.

• The New York Marathon will take place on Sunday, November 2 and is expected to air on an ESPN channel.

Surprising and pleasing fans, Team US is still in the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup as the tournament reaches its Quarter-Finals, which means they have a good shot at reaching the top spot, though they've got further to go before that happens. How to watch National Geographic in the UK

The National Geographic channel in the UK can be watched via certain premium TV providers, as it's not a free-to-watch channel.

TalkTalk, BT and Virgin Media all offer it in their channel lists, but these aren't services you sign up just for TV streaming (they offer broadband, or phone landlines, or more), so it's not worth signing up just for Nat Geo.

The French Open, officially known as Roland-Garros, is the second major tennis competition of the year which collectively make up the Grand Slam tournaments - the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US open completing the line up. This Paris-based professional tournament played at the end of May will be available to watch this year on Peacock alongside Fubo and Sling TV. French Open on Peacock

While the official schedule of the French tournament has not been announced yet we know the dates that this clay court competition will take place: Monday 20th May until Sunday 9th June.

Peacock is set to offer live streams of basically all the games, so you can hit up the site or app to see what's streaming during the week.

The first week consists of qualifying games, starting on Monday 20th and concluding on Friday 24th, which will decide who plays in the actual tournament which begins on Sunday 26th with the men's and women's singles first round. The second, third and fourth rounds of both men's and women's singles will continue from Wednesday 29th until Monday 3rd June.

Getting into the all-important matches, the quarter-finals will take place across Tuesday 4th to Wednesday 5th, with the women's semi-finals being held on Thursday 6th and the men's semi-finals on Friday 7th. And make sure to set an alarm for the nail-biting finals with the women's finals set to conclude on Saturday 8th and the men's on Sunday 9th. Indy 500 on Peacock

Peacock will be presenting their exclusive coverage of practice, qualifying, warm-up, and the big race itself throughout the month of May and this all starts with the initial practices on Tuesday May 14th.

From this first day of practice until the last chance practice on Monday May 20th, Peacock will be there with exhaustive (pun fully intended) coverage of every minute. The following qualifying rounds will officially take place on the weekend of May 18-19th in the late afternoon for both Saturday and Sunday.

Thursday Night Football: Broncos vs Chargers

A critical AFC West showdown headlines the penultimate Thursday Night Football game of the season, as the Denver Broncos play the Los Angeles Chargers as both teams are fighting for a wild card spot.

The Broncos travel to Los Angeles needing a win to clinch their spot in the playoffs. The Broncos have been led by primarily by their defense this season, which has been among the best in then league and featuring star players like Nik Bonitto and Patrick Surtain, but the offense has started to come around as well as rookie quarterback Bo Nix has developed. In their current four-game winning streak, the Broncos have averaged just under 35 points per game, with Nix throwing 10 touchdown passes; on the flip side, his five interceptions in the last two games are a bit concerning. In terms of injuries for this game, the Broncos will be without depth running back Jaleel McLaughlin and cornerback Riley Moss.

The Chargers are in a bit more precarious spot. While they currently are holding onto the final wild card spot, a loss would allow the Indianapolis Colts and/or Miami Dolphins to get within one game with two weeks left. But a win could all but secure the Chargers place in the playoffs (they can clinch with a win and some help). The Chargers also have fielded a top flight defense this season (despite a poor performance against the Buccaneers last week), so this could be a defensive slugfest. The question will be can the Chargers offense, led by Justin Herbert, make enough plays, especially as their top running back (JK Dobbins) and best tight ends (Hayden Hurst, Will Dissly) are out.

Monday Night Football: Lions vs 49ers preview

The final regular season Monday Night Football game of the year (there will be a playoff game hosted by the MNF crew) is a rematch of last year's NFC Championship game. Unfortunately, this game doesn't quite have the same stakes as that one.

The Detroit Lions have been one of the best teams in the league all season, with a record of 13-2 entering this penultimate week of the season. Offensively they are second in the league in total yards per game and first in points per game. Defensively they have played well, but have struggled in recent weeks as injuries have begun to pile up. The outcome of this game will not have any real impact on where the Lions' end up — they have clinched a playoff spot and whether they win the NFC North and the No. 1 seed in the NFC will come down to a week 18 game between the Minnesota Vikings — but if there's any lingering resentment from last year's heartbreaking loss in the NFC Championship game, then there may still be some incentive to play for.

While the Lions of late have been banged up, that has been the story for the 49ers all season, as injuries were a big part of why their season derailed and they will miss the playoffs for the first time since 2020. Even so, they have talented players in Brock Purdy, George Kittle, Deebo Samuel, Nick Bosa, Fred Warner and more still lining up for them in this game, so they could look to end their season strong.

Sunday Night Football Wild Card game: Commanders vs Buccaneers

After playing in week 1 to kick off the regular season, the Washington Commanders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers reunite for their first (and potentially last) games of the postseason. With Washington as the wild card team and the Bucs the NFC South champions, the game is taking place in Tampa.

Washington went from last place in their division last season to 12 wins and a playoff berth this year, in large part thanks to the play of rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels. The young signal caller threw for more than 3,500 yards and 25 touchdowns while also adding 891 rushing yards (leading the team) and six more touchdowns on the ground. While Daniels is the key to their success, the defense did make improvements throughout the season, which will be key against a potent Bucs offense.

Capable both on the ground the through the air, the Bucs averaged just under 400 yards of total offense a game and score 29.5 points per game. Baker Mayfield threw 41 touchdown passes on the season, primarily to veteran Mike Evans and emerging rookie receiver Jalen McMillan. Another rookie breakout on offense was running back Bucky Irving, who rushed for 1,122 yards, averaging 5.4 yards per carry. Tampa is shakier on the defensive side of the ball, particularly against the pass.

One of my favorite Amazon Fire TV tips and tricks, which applies both for Amazon-made TVs and Amazon Fire TV Stick, is that you can ditch the remote and control your streaming in a completely different way.

The Amazon Fire TV Stick remote control is a useful way of jumping between streaming services, closing apps and finding your favorite show, especially if you rely on its Alexa voice control to do lots of the work. However you don't actually need to use the remote.

If you've lost your Alexa remote, can't get it to work or, like me, are just too lazy to excavate your couch cushions to find the thing every time you want to watch TV, there's an alternative. You can actually use your smartphone to control a Fire TV device.

How to use your phone to control a Fire TV in full

The first thing you're going to want to do is set up your Amazon Fire TV device, if you haven't already. This is generally a very easy process, but it can take some time if you need to install lots of apps and updates. 

To use the Fire TV app on your phone, you'll need to make sure your Fire device is plugged in and connected to the internet.

Next, you'll need to install the Fire TV app on your device. To do this you can head to the Play Store (if you're on an Android device) or the App Store (if you're on an iPhone or iPad). If you're currently reading this article on your chosen gadget, press the name of the store and it'll take you straight to the listing for the app.

Simply got through the normal process of installing an app, which you've probably done many times before and your phone will automate to a degree. When it's installed, you'll likely find it on the home page of your phone unless you've set apps up to appear elsewhere.

When you first open the app, you'll be shown a screen saying 'Looking for devices...'. Under this, you'll see a button you should press saying 'Set Up New Device'. Now, you'll be prompted to log into your Amazon account, which you should do.

Next, select the type of streaming device you're setting up: Fire TV, in most cases, then your phone will try to search for any compatible devices nearby.

Note: if your phone doesn't find your Fire TV device, there are a few things you can try. Make sure your phone is connected to the internet and Bluetooth, and that the Fire TV is powered on. You can also go into the 'Settings' menu of the Fire TV, scroll down to 'Controllers & Bluetooth Devices' and then 'Add Mobile Device', and the device will start to search for your phone.

Eventually, your mobile will find the device you're trying to connect to. Select it on your phone, and it'll ask you for a four-digit PIN code. This PIN will be shown on your Fire TV, though if it doesn't appear, go back into the homepage of the Fire TV and try again. Sometimes in testing, we found that the PIN wouldn't appear if we were in an app.

Enter the PIN, and then the Fire TV remote app will be set up. You'll be shown an interface on your mobile that resembles the Alexa remote: directional icons, a home button, even an Alexa button so you can speak into your phone.

The app also has a button you can press (top right corner) to bring up a keyboard and easily search, and next to this is another button (three squares and a plus sign) that brings up a list of all of your apps. You can use these to easily navigate.

In the Fire TV app 'Settings' menu, you can set up a few extra features. You can change navigation from arrow keys to swiping, you can add a small Alexa remote layout to your phone's lock screen so you don't need to unlock the device to control your Fire TV, and you can turn on vibrations on your smartphone for when you're navigating.

With this feature installed, you never need to worry about where your Alexa remote is hiding ever again!

Although designed with an ‘always on’ approach – the idea being that it’s ready for you to start browsing and streaming at a moment’s notice – there is a way around it.

So, without further ado we’ll outline how to get rid of that annoying flashing light and turn your device off when you aren’t using it below.

How to turn off an Amazon Fire TV Stick

Simply unplugging your Amazon Fire TV Stick or device from its mains wall plug will turn off the gadget, but we're going to give you a way to turn it off that doesn't require you to return to the wall and plug it back in to turn it back on.

You're going to need to get your Amazon Alexa remote ready, and this technique works on whatever screen you're on, whether you're watching a movie or on the Fire TV home screen.

To turn off your Fire stick, press and hold the 'home' button; this is the one with a little icon of a house. If you're in a dark room and can't see the remote properly, it's worth noting that it has a little bump on it on most remotes, which distinguishes it from its neighbors.

Press and hold this home button until an options menu opens, then scroll along to the 'sleep mode' option which should be the central of the five tiles. Select this, and it'll put your Fire stick in sleep mode, which is the closest state to being off it can enter.

In order to wake the stick and return to Fire TV, press any button on the Alexa remote; you're supposed to have to press the power button, but I've found that any work, even the Alexa button.

Once you've figured out how to put the Amazon Fire TV Stick in sleep mode, you can comfortably turn it off when you've finished watching.

For this guide, we're presuming that your Fire TV device is all set up and ready to go, with updates installed.

First, you'll want to head to the main menu of the device, which is easily done by pressing the 'home' button on the remote. From here, you'll head to the appstore, which is an orange-icon app found in the "Search" menu (the magnifying glass in the menu) or the "Your Apps" list (the icon next to your app list which shows three squares and a plus sign).

Open the app store and either find Apple TV Plus in the menu or search for it. If you've installed this app on another Fire device you'll simply be prompted to install it, but if not, you'll have to 'purchase' it (for no cost) first. Press the download button and it'll automatically start to install on your device.

It'll take a while depending on your internet connection, but at this point, Apple TV Plus is now installed! Lovely. But you've still got a little work to do.

Using the same method as before, head back to the Fire TV home page, and you'll need to set up Apple TV Plus to use. Once downloaded, it'll be available either from the home page or your apps list (as detailed above).

It helps to create your Apple TV Plus account on your phone or computer to save time, and I'd recommend you do so using our Apple TV Plus free trials guide, so maybe you can save money on the way.

You can either set up Apple TV Plus on the Fire TV device or by using a smartphone, and I'd definitely recommend the latter, as it's a lot quicker and saves you having to labor over the on-screen keyboard. You simply scan a QR code, sign in using your phone, and you're ready to stream some TV shows. Otherwise, you can enter your email address and password using the remote.

Firstly, you'll need to make sure your Fire TV device is all set up and up to date, ready to use. 

Now, head to the Fire TV home page. If you've got a remote, you can easily get here by pressing the button with a 'home' outline on it. This will show you the main menu with all your downloaded apps and suggestions for you.

The next step is to find the Amazon App Store. You can find this in the 'Search' function of the menu as well as the 'Your Apps & Channels' menu. Once in the store, use the search function to type in 'Netflix' which will bring you to the page for Netflix.

If you've already downloaded Netflix on another device linked to your Amazon account, it'll tell you so, and you can now press the download button (a cloud with an arrow pointing down) to begin to install it straight away. If not, you'll have to 'purchase' the app (it's free, so don't worry) before doing this.

Great — Netflix is now installed! However, you'll still need to open it up. 

Go back to the Fire TV home page (using the same technique as above), and now it's time to set up Netflix to use. Now you can select the Netflix logo or, if you've got a remote with the option, you can simply press the 'Netflix' button on your remote to jump straight to the app.

If you've not already got a Netflix account, I'd really recommend setting one up on your computer or smartphone, as it's a lot easier than using an Amazon remote to do so.

Once you have a Netflix account, you can log in using the remote to input your email address and password, but there's a handy shortcut. If you have Netflix logged in on your smartphone or tablet, you can use a QR code scanner to scan a QR code within the Netflix app. This lets you bypass the fiddly set-up process, and saves a lot of time, so if you're savvy with scanning these boxy black-and-white ciphers it's well worth proceeding this way.

Whichever way you choose to sign in, once you succeed, you'll finally be signed into the app. Netflix is now ready to watch, and you can stream to your heart's content!

In the US, you're going to find that NBA All-Star weekend is scattered across a few different services and providers, which may make your streaming process a pain.

While TNT has the majority of the events, you'll also need ESPN and NBA TV in order to watch everything being offered. In the schedule below, we'll indicate which channel you need for events.

Luckily, if your cable package doesn't include TNT, ESPN and NBA TV (or you don't have cable), several live TV streaming services offer all three. Sling TV has TNT and ESPN on its Orange plan, though you'll need to pay extra for its Sports Extra package to gain access to NBA TV. YouTube TV also has all three channels.

FuboTV misses out on TNT while Hulu with live TV doesn't have NBA TV, so these are options that will get you some, but not all, of the events.

Additionally, the TNT NBA All-Star events will be available to stream on Max. Currently, the streaming platform offers a few different options for would-be subscribers. 

How to watch NBA All-Star Weekend in the UK

In the UK, two different places host NBA All-Star Weekend events: Discovery Plus and the NBA League Pass.

Discovery Plus offers a few different options for would-be subscribers and helps those in the UK gain access to the events broadcasted on TNT in the States. NBA League Pass is the official NBA streaming app, and and also grants you access to several All-Star Weekend events. 

How to watch the NBA All-Star Weekend everywhere else

If you're away from your home and want to watch the NBA All-Star Weekend events, you can solve this issue with a Virtual Private Network (a VPN).

Famously there’s no such thing as a free lunch but the same cannot be said of streaming service free trials. Well, to an extent. Yes, it is true that some still allow a free trial – not as many as used to be the case – which allows viewers to browse their movies and TV shows for a week, there is usually a catch...

Most streamers rely on subscribers either being won over by their back catalogue of shows to not cancel after their free trial or that subscribers will forget to cancel all together. That’s helped by the usually very small or hidden unsubscribe button that you usually have to do on a separate webpage to the streaming service itself. And ESPN Plus is no different.

With live TV, documentaries, factual content all revolving around sports, ESPN Plus offers a broad church including NFL, MLB, NHL, UFC, college football, PGA Tour, La Liga to name a few. You can get all this for the price of $11.99 per month or $119.99 per year, but what about a free trial to try before you buy?

Is there an ESPN Plus free trial?

Unfortunately, at the time of writing in late 2024, there's no ESPN Plus free trial. If you sign up for the service, you'll have to pay straight away.

ESPN Plus used to offer a free trial, which may be why you're looking for one. We're sorry to say that this is no longer the case. In fact, it’s been a while since there was one.

However there are still ways to save on a subscription, and you can find some pointers below:

How to save on ESPN Plus

ESPN Plus on its own is great. But ESPN Plus as part of the Disney Bundle is even better. Here's how it works:

Instead of getting just ESPN Plus, you'll get all the content on that service, plus Hulu and Disney Plus (both ad-enabled), all for $16.99 a month. That's all three services for the price of two.

Broken down, ESPN Plus will set you back $11.99 a month, while Disney Plus costs $7.99/$17.99 (ads/no ads) and Hulu is $9.99/$17.99 a month (again, ads/no ads). So you're getting nearly $30 worth of content for just over half that price. You can also pay more if you want to get ad-free Disney and Hulu.

Where things really get interesting is if you add Hulu with Live TV into the mix. ESPN Plus is included as a standard feature on certain tiers of Hulu with Live TV (along with Disney Plus). So for $82.99 per month (with ads) you can get ESPN Plus, Disney Plus, access to Hulu's library and live TV (including live sports) for one monthly fee.

How to get a cheap(er) ESPN Plus subscription

If you're just in it for the sport, you can save on ESPN Plus by making the most of its annual plan. While its rolling monthly subscription will set you back $11.99 a month (still incredibly good value), sign up for a year and it'll cost a one-off payment of $119.99. That saves you $24 for the year — for sporting fans this is your best bet, getting you 12 months for the price of 10.

2. Click either the Get the Disney Bundle or Subscribe to ESPN Plus only button.
3. Create an account by filling in your details
4. Or scroll and click Log In if you've already got an account
5. Enter your payment information, including credit card and billing information, or choose to link to PayPal. Click Buy ESPN Plus.
6. Check the information to make sure it is correct and that you have selected the correct plan for you. ESPN Plus will show you how much you will be billed, and when it will renew.
7. You will see a Success page if everything is done correctly.
8. Click Get Started to start watching ESPN Plus

Congratulations. You're now signed up for ESPN Plus. There may not be a free trial, but you can watch as much as you want in the first month, for only $11.99.

How to remove ads from Prime Video

Currently an Amazon Prime subscriber? This section is for you.

Firstly, go to Amazon's Account & Settings page (you can find it by clicking here if you're in the US, or by clicking here if you're in the UK) and make sure you're logged into your account.

Now, click 'Your Account' on the left, and simply select 'Go Ad Free'. Then you'll be prompted to add the extra fee to your account, and lose commercials on videos. Simple! The above works on a computer but it's simple on other devices. Open the Prime Video app, find the Settings page and select 'Go Ad Free' there.

How to sign up for ad-free Prime Video

Not already an Amazon Prime subscriber? This segment is for you. Currently, you can't sign up for an ad-free Prime Video account straight away, as you need to make the account, sign up, then remove ads in three steps.

Firstly, you'll want to head to the Amazon website (Amazon.com), and create an account. For now, this is free.

Once you're signed in to your new free account, click "Accounts & Lists" in the top-right bar, and then 'Prime' in the menu that appears. Here you're shown the Amazon Prime landing page, and you can start a free trial and press "Explore other plans" to see the various options open to you. If you've already got an Amazon account (but not Prime), you can also just click on the links below.

Now that you're signed up to Prime, you can use the above section to remove ads from your Prime Video account.

Want to watch Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, the cult favorite Channel 4 horror comedy? Fortunately, it's pretty easy to do so, even decades after its debut.

If you're unfamiliar with the series, Garth Marenghi's Darkplace is a brilliant show-within-a-show, one that revolves around a supposedly lost horror series called Darkplace, a cheesy, melodramatic show set at Darkplace Hospital which stands over a gate to hell... in Romford, London.  

The fictional show takes the form of a special presentation of a series of episodes from the show which was produced during the 1980s, though it only ever made it to air in Peru. As Channel 4 deemed the series too radical, it was rejected and ended up being lost to time.

But, as Marenghi explains, Channel 4 decided to show a selection of episodes due to going through an "artistic drought". Garth Marenghi's Darkplace then packages these authentically hammy and low-budget episodes alongside contemporary interview footage with several of the show's co-stars, who fully believe in the series' genius.

There is also a pure streaming option for watching NFL on CBS games — Paramount Plus. US subscribers can watch the NFL on Paramount Plus. Another option to stream your local CBS game is to sign up for NFL Plus. This streaming service provides live streams of games available in your area, but only through your mobile phone or tablet.

If UK football fans are wondering where they can watch NFL games — since they don’t have CBS or the other US networks — they do have a couple of options. NFL games are shown in the UK on ITV, Sky TV and the NFL Game Pass subscription service.

NFL on CBS: AFC Championship

CBS is airing the AFC Championship game between the Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs at 6:30 pm ET/3:30 pm PT on Sunday, January 26, from Kansas City.

This is a matchup of the two top seeds in the AFC playoff field. The Bills are heading out on the road for the first time in these playoffs after home wins over the Denver Broncos and Baltimore Ravens, while the Chiefs took care of business against the Houston Texans to secure their seventh consecutive trip to the AFC Championship game as they pursue their third straight Super Bowl.

The two teams played earlier this season in Buffalo, a game that the Bills won. However, in this rivalry between Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes, the Bills have had the advantage in the regular season, where Allen's Bills are 4-1 against Mahomes in the Chiefs, but in the postseason the Chiefs have the only three matchups they've had.

So, you've heard about NBCUniversal streaming service Peacock, and want to check out its array of content from The Day of the Jackal to The Traitors. Hold up though, is there a free trial you can test out the platform on?

Some bad news on that front, in a one word answer: no. While free trials certainly used to be quite common among streamers this is not so much the case nowadays except from Apple TV Plus and these free streaming services. To get an idea of whether Peacock is for you that will mean having to fork out some money on at least a month.

Peacock also used to have a free plan, but in early 2023, that was removed.

What does Peacock Premium or Peacock Premium Plus include?

As a Peacock Premium or Peacock Premium Plus subscriber, you'll be able to access plenty more content, including Peacock Originals like Girls5eva and Rutherford Falls.  You'll also get next-day access to current NBC/Bravo hits like Below Deck and Real Housewives. 

Plus you can start streaming live sports and events including Premier League soccer, golf and Sunday Night Football. Peacock is also the exclusive US home of the Eurovision Song Contest.

How to watch Peacock on your computer

The first thing that you need to do if you want to watch Peacock on your computer is to visit www.peacocktv.com. Once there, in the top right corner of the screen there are “Join Now” and “Sign In” buttons. If you already subscribe to Peacock, you click “Sign In” and login with your credentials. If you are not a Peacock subscriber, select “Join Now.”

How to watch Fubo with Roku

“How do I actually watch Fubo with Roku , though?”

All you need to do is go to your Roku Search tab and search for ‘Fubo’ and the Fubo app should appear. With your remote scroll down to the app, select it with the OK button and click on ‘Add Channel’ when presented with options.

Once fully downloaded the Fubo app will appear on your Home screen and you should be able to access it once selected. When you enter the app you will either be able to access the channel through typing in your existing login details or creating a new account.

This jump to paying above $100 per month comes with a lot more sports and movie channels, alongside the previous plans’ offerings, with the likes of CBS Sports Network, Discovery Family, FX Movie Channel, NHL Network, STARZ Encore and many more. DirecTV Premier

If you’re willing to cough up $159.99 for a plan which offers the most, DirecTV Premier is the one for you. With over 150 channels via internet and over 340 for Satellite, this top plan from DirecTV certainly gives you bang for your buck.

Whereas the other plans all include a trial three month period of Max, SHOWTIME, STARZ and Cinemax, DirecTV Premier includes them for the length of your time with them. This access to the top-rated premium networks (with the exception of MGM+ which is still only a three month trial period) may justify the inflated price for some but for others paying over $150 per month may be too much. Just a few of the extra channels, not available on other plans, include ActionMAX, NFL RedZone, Outdoor Channel and Willow. Ultimately, it’s up to you as to whether you can justify this price for DirecTV’s biggest and best package.

If you've done some research into streaming services that offer bang for your buck, you will have almost certainly stumbled across Sling TV. Similar to its competitors Fubo and DirecTV, it may lack the sheer amount of channels but it has other pros to balance the cons...

Sling Blue

For exactly the same price of $40 per month, an alternative plan on this streaming service you can choose is Sling Blue. Offering over 42 channels and three devices to stream content on, this is in many ways a step sideways from Sling Orange, but with more of a focus on news content.

While Sling Blue may not feature the popular Disney and ESPN channels of the former plan, it replaces them with two big networks: Fox – FOX, FS1, FX – and NBC – NBC, MSNBC.

6. Visit es.pn/activate on your phone, tablet or PC
7. Follow the directions on the site to login with your ESPN account
8. Your TV will confirm when you've successfully linked your account
9. Back on the ESPN TV App main screen, select ESPN

Now your TV is all set up to watch ESPN content. The ESPN section has live content and original shows including documentaries all waiting for you. Just select the ESPN section each time you open the app to see what's new.

If your streaming device doesn't have an ESPN app, you have options. If you have a Chromecast, you can cast ESPN from your phone to your TV.
