In the Eternity trailer, the upcoming movie from A24 that is earmarking a TBD November release date, Elizabeth Olsen’s recently deceased character has to decide which of the two loves of her life she wants to spend eternity with in the afterlife.

Thankfully, moviegoers won’t have to make such a finite choice in what movies to watch in November, which to my eyes, is looking like the best month of new movie releases we’re getting this year.

Starting with Eternity, the movie hails from A24, the specialty studio that has a passionate base of moviegoers that will see just about anything they put out (of which I am one). But beyond its label, Eternity looks like a fantastic blend of comedy, romance and fantasy, with three fantastic actors leading the way, what looks like fun supporting turns from Da’Vine Joy Randolph and John Early and a unique, original premise.

If that doesn’t look like something you’re interested in buying a movie ticket for, great news, the November movie release schedule has a variety of genres that will satisfy just about anyone, with plenty of big name stars attached. Let’s break them down in order of their current US release date (some may be limited release initially).

Die, My Love

In the dramatic category is Die, My Love (November 7), starring Jennifer Lawrence, Robert Pattison, LaKeith Stanfield, Nick Nolte and Sissy Spacek, directed by Lynne Ramsay. The movie follows a woman struggling to maintain her sanity amid a variety of issues living in a rural area. Ramsay is a singular filmmaker, and Lawrence is earning some buzz that could see her earn her first Oscar nomination since 2016.

I Wish You All the Best (November 7)

I Wish You All the Best (November 7) is a coming-of-age indie drama featuring the likes of Alexandra Daddario, Lena Dunham and Cole Sprouse that has a handful of reviews, putting it right now at a 100% “Fresh” score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Nuremberg (November 7)

For those interested in history, particularly World War Two, Nuremberg takes place after the world, when a psychiatrist interviews Nazi leaders ahead of the Nuremberg trials, including Hermann Göring. Russell Crowe is playing Göring, with Rami Malek, Richard E. Grant, Michael Shannon, Leo Woodall, Colin Hanks and John Slattery also starring.

Predator: Badlands (November 7)

We’re getting the latest in the Predator franchise with Predator: Badlands. Prey director Dan Trachtenberg directs this new movie, which takes a different approach than past movies in the Predator franchise, as the iconic movie monster is actually going to be the hero of the story, with a young member of the species embarking on a dangerous first hunt. Elle Fanning also stars as a wise-cracking android.

The Running Man (November 7)

Edgar Wright, the fan-favorite director of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, and one of Hollywood’s newest and biggest stars Glen Powell team up for The Running Man, a new adaptation of the Stephen King novel about a reality TV show in the future where the goal is for contestants to survive 30 days as they are literally hunted.

Sentimental Value (November 7)

For fans of international movies, Sentimental Value is going to be the movie to keep an eye out for, as it reunites The Worst Person in the World team of Renate Reinsve and Joachim Trier. Stellan Skarsgård and Elle Fanning also star in this story of an artistic family that has to explore their memories and relationships as the father tries to make a new film.

Train Dreams

Train Dreams is getting a run in movie theaters before it premieres on Netflix later in the month (November 21). But wherever you watch it, the movie comes from the team behind the brilliant and Oscar-nominated movie Sing Sing. Train Dreams stars Joel Edgerton and Felicity Jones and tells the thoughtful and visually gorgeous looking story of a family at the turn of the 20th century.

That’s just the first week.

Jay Kelly (November 14)

Jay Kelly is another Netflix Oscar hopeful getting a theatrical release before premiering on the streamer. This one comes from Noah Baumbach and has the incredible cast of George Clooney, Adam Sandler, Laura Dern, Eve Hewson, Isla Fisher, Riley Keough, Patrick Wilson, Emily Mortimer (who also co-wrote the script with Baumbach), Billy Crudup and Greta Gerwig in a comedy/drama story about a movie star and his manager.

Keeper (November 14)

Then we get the latest thrill from Osgood Perkins (Longlegs, The Monkey) in Keeper that sees a couple’s romantic getaway become haunted by the haunting past of the property they’re staying at.

Now You See Me: Now You Don't (November 14)

With Now You See Me: Now You Don’t magic is back, and so is the original cast of the popular franchise, as Isla Fisher reunites with Jesse Eisenberg, Dave Franco and Woody Harrelson. They’re joined by new additions Justice Smith, Dominic Sessa and Ariana Greenblatt in trying to pull off a heist of Rosamund Pike’s villain.

Rental Family (November 21)

Brendan Fraser also returns in his first leading role since his Oscar win for The Whale with Rental Family. The story sees Fraser play an actor that is hired by a Japanese company where people can rent out family members to be stand-ins for specific events (something that is actually a real thing in Japan).

Sisu 2 (November 21)

Action fans will likely be stoked that a sequel to a cult favorite from the last few years arrives in November, as Sisu 2 picks up the story of the ex-soldier who plows through Nazis as he attempts to secure a fortune he’s procured. It’s like a World War Two John Wick.

Wicked: For Good (November 21)

Probably the biggest movie of the month will be Wicked: For Good, the concluding act of Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda’s (Ariana Grande) story that started with the smash hit Wicked last year (and my top movie of 2024). Can the sequel repeat that success?

Zootopia 2 (November 26)

Closing the month out there is the ideal family friendly option in Zootopia 2, the sequel to Disney’s popular animated movie that brings back Jason Bateman as Nick Wilde and Ginnifer Goodwin as Judy Hopps, along with a new roster of voice stars.

Hamnet (November 27)

Hamnet, the latest from Oscar-winning director Chloe Zhao that stars Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley as William Shakespeare and his wife Agnes as they deal with a personal tragedy away from the stage. This one may arrive in December for most audiences.

Who knows, there may still be a movie or two that gets added to the month (be it on streaming or in theaters).

While I’m definitely looking forward to a number of 2025 new movies in the coming months, but November looks like a movie fan’s paradise.

Who do you want to spend eternity with? That is the question at the heart of the new comedy, drama, fantasy, romance A24 movie starring Elizabeth Olsen, Miles Turner and Callum Turner, aptly titled Eternity.

This is another 2025 new movie from fan-favorite studio A24. Already in 2025, they’ve released movies that include Parthenope, Warfare, Friendship, Materialists, Eddington and more, with Highest 2 Lowest, The Smashing Machine, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You and Marty Supreme also on the docket for this year.

We don’t have a specific release date for Eternity at this time, but press materials shared by A24 indicate that the movie will be released in November. That gives us the options of November 7, November 14, November 21 and November 28 (possible chance they go with November 26, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving in the US).

Eternity joins a very busy slate of movies coming out in November, which include Jennifer Lawrence’s Die, My Love, Glen Powell’s The Running Man, Now You See Me: Now You Don’t and Wicked: For Good.

Olsen, Teller and Turner lead Eternity, as the characters in an afterlife love triangle. Eternity marks both Olsen and Teller’s second notable movies of 2025 (The Assessment for Olsen, The Gorge for Teller), while Turner was most recently seen in the Apple TV Plus series Masters of the Air.

Joining the trio in the Eternity cast are Oscar-winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph (The Holdovers, Only Murders in the Building), John Early (Search Party, The Great North) and Olga Merediz (In the Heights, Blockbuster).

No, you can’t stream Eddington at this time.

Again, Eddington is playing exclusively in movie theaters, so you can’t watch it at home, via either streaming or on-demand. At this time, we don’t have any details on when that will change, but there’s every expectation that it will first be made available at home to buy or rent on digital on-demand platforms.

As far as its eventual streaming plans, the expectation is that the movie will make its streaming premiere on HBO Max in the US and where the platform is available, just as all recent A24 movies have.

Ari Aster is known for dealing in the surreal, whether it be a cursed family in Hereditary, a bonkers cultural rite in Midsommar, or however you want to describe Beau Is Afraid. In Eddington, Aster takes it to the surreal time of May 2020, when pandemic lockdowns and racial justice battles combined to create a hectic summer.

Set in the fictional town of Eddington, N.M., the movie follows county sheriff Joe Cross (Joaquin Phoenix) and his battle with the mayor, Ted Garcia (Pedro Pascal), over what is the right way to lead their town amidst the turbulent times of early pandemic, where any act can be made to look politically motivated and blown out of proportion.

The movie takes some of the classic Western ideas and turns them on their head for this modern story. For most of the movie, it works to create a gripping, off-kilter take on the western genre that has its fair share of things to say about the issues of today. Though it does become too big for its britches, especially in the third act, overall Aster’s ambitious filmmaking pays off enough for a successful endeavor.

The big idea at the center of Eddington that Aster appears to be getting across is that certain individuals will attempt to hijack positions and ideals for their own benefit, playing into the extremes on both sides. This is present in Joe as he embraces conspiracy theories as he runs for mayor against Ted, but also in the characters like Eric (Matt Gomez Hidaka) and Brian (Cameron Mann), who get involved in protests as they pursue a girl, then later switch ideals when the other side better suits them.

While this idea remains throughout the movie, the thread starts to get lost when the focus of the plot turns to something else beyond the political battle between Joe and Ted, instead opting for a bigger, more action-packed third act. Bigger is not always better, especially in this case. All that contributes to a run-time that nears the two-and-a-half-hour mark, which is hard for the movie to sustain.

Where Eddington is at its best is the standoffs between Phoenix and Pascal’s characters. Though rather than having a shootout at dawn, phones are often the weapon of choice in Eddington (guns do get drawn eventually, though). Aster is clear that what we share and read on our devices can be damaging and dangerous in their own unique way.

Considering their star power, it may seem odd that I haven’t mentioned either Emma Stone or Austin Butler yet, but that’s because their impact on the story is minimal. While some backstory surrounding Stone’s character Louise is a motivating factor between the rivalry between Joe and Ted, we don’t get enough of her interacting with everyone else to feel her true weight on the story. Then Butler is basically here for a cameo in one of the stranger scenes in the movie. I won’t judge either of their performances because there isn’t really enough to go on as they’re here for a minute and then basically non factors.

Aster is not interested in a John Wayne-type hero riding into town and saving Eddington. Instead he chooses to investigate the fallacies and dangers of both extremes and how they can be manipulated. It mostly works and is done in a smart and even at times humorous way. Where the movie struggles is not knowing when to rein itself in. I wouldn’t put Eddington ahead of Midsommar of Hereditary in the lineup of Aster’s work, but it’s another big swing from the director that is worth a watch.

With that said, it can be a lot to scroll through, so allow me to offer my humble services in helping you find the new movies on streaming that you are not going to want to miss.

The below list of movies are taken from the major streaming services: Apple TV Plus, Disney Plus, Hulu, Max, Netflix, Paramount Plus, Peacock and Prime Video. I'm also specifically picking movies that are new to streaming this month — in this case, these are 11 movies that are landing on one of the major streamers for the first time, or coming back to streaming services after only being available via on-demand.

So without further ado, here are my picks for the 11 movies to stream in July.

The Amateur (Hulu)

The Amateur slid a little under the radar in movie theaters, but the spy thriller starring Rami Malek did earn a "Fresh" score from critics and an 88% positive rating from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Those reactions point to this being a movie that likely deserves more of a look when it becomes easier to watch on streaming this month.

In the movie, Malek plays a CIA analyst Charlie Heller, whose wife tragically dies in a terrorist attack. He wants to go after those responsible, but when his superiors deny that plan, Charlie goes out on his own using his analytical and technical skills at his disposal to get his revenge.

Stream The Amateur on Hulu in the US starting July 17.

The Assessment (Hulu)

Let's be honest, nobody likes taking tests. But what if a test decided whether or not you could have children. That's the premise of this sci-fi psychological drama that stars Elizabeth Olsen and Himesh Patel as hopeful parents and Alicia Vikander as person running the assessment and deciding if they get to become parents.

The indie movie, which only saw a limited release in movie theaters, is officially "Certified Fresh."

Stream The Assessment on Hulu in the US starting July 19; currently streaming on Prime Video in the UK.

Billy Joel: And So it Goes (Max)

I had plans to see Billy Joel in concert this September before the Piano Man unfortunately announced that he would need time to recover from a medical condition and the concert was cancelled (bummer, but warranted). That just makes this upcoming HBO documentary about Joel more of a must watch for me (and any fan of his music).

A two-parter that will release on Max in back-to-back weeks, Billy Joel: And So It Goes explores the love, loss, and personal struggles that fuel his songwriting, providing never-before-seen performances, home videos, personal photographs and one-on-one interviews.

Stream Billy Joel: And So It Goes part 1 on July 18 on Max, with part 2 premiering July 25.

There's no info on a UK premiere for Billy Joel: An So It Goes at this time.

Brick (Netflix)

The language barrier on Netflix may be a thing of the past based on how many foreign language movies have become solid hits on Netflix so far this year. Whether they're watching dubbed versions or subtitles, Netflix subscribers have given movies like Exterritorial (from Germany) and Bad Influence (from Spain) their attention.

We could have the next example of that this month in Brick, another German-made movie. Matthias Schweighöfer, the breakout star of Netflix's Army of the Dead, leads this sci-fi, mystery thriller where an entire apartment building becomes encased by a mysterious brick wall, forcing the residents to find a way out.

Stream Brick on Netflix worldwide starting July 10.

Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (Hulu)

Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story is one of the funniest sports comedies of all time. The battle between Vince Vaughn and his team of misfits and the fantastically over-the-top villain played by Ben Stiller is, as the title suggest a classic underdog story, played out in hilarious fashion.

With sports options a bit minimal at the moment, Dodgeball can help fill your competitive drive, while getting you howling.

Stream Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story on Hulu in the US starting July 1; currently streaming on Disney Plus in the UK.

Happy Gilmore 2 (Netflix)

Another classic sports movie highlights July's streaming options, with Adam Sandler's Happy Gilmore 2 teeing off on Netflix. The sequel to Sandler's golf comedy sees his hot-headed, long-driving character trying to reignite his golf career to help his daughter achieve her dreams.

Original cast members Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen and Ben Stiller, are back, while new to the scene are Sunny Sandler, Margaret Qualley, Bad Bunny, Travis Kelce and a number of real-life golf professionals. Can they all help recreate what made the original Happy Gilmore a fan-favorite?

Stream Happy Gilmore 2 on Netflix worldwide starting July 25.

Heads of State (Prime Video)

In the new action comedy Heads of State, a pair of world leaders have a bit more of a hand in international affairs as John Cena and Idris Elba play the US president and UK prime minister that have to stop a global conspiracy on their own. Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Jack Quaid and Paddy Considine also star in the movie that hopes to bring some summer fun to Prime Video's streaming lineup.

Stream Heads of State on Prime Video worldwide starting on July 2.

Mortal Kombat (Max)

Pick your preference on Mortal Kombat movies, as both the 1995 movie and the 2021 reboot return to Max in July. For, it's the 1995 movie all the way.

In a nutshell, both movies involve some of Earth's strongest fighters being tasked with saving the planet from adversaries from an other world looking to the planet over, with its fate to be decided in a series of fights known as Mortal Kombat.

The timing is good too, as a sequel to 2021's Mortal Kombat is set to be released later this year. So you can use this opportunity to refamiliarize with the new movie's characters.

Stream Mortal Kombat (1995 and 2021) on Max in the US starting July 1.

Both Mortal Kombat movies are available on-demand in the UK, with no streaming plans available at this time.

The Old Guard 2 (Netflix)

It's been a long five-year wait for The Old Guard 2, the sequel to Netflix and Charlize Theron's hit action movie about immortal mercenaries. But that officially ends early in the month, with the added bonus of Theron and company taking on a new villain, played by Kill Bill icon Uma Thurman.

This is one of Netflix's answers to the summer blockbuster season, and if it can live up to the first movie it should be a pretty good one.

On Becoming a Guinea Fowl (Max)

Max is adding a number of recent A24 movies to its library this month, including Opus and Death of a Unicorn. But the most intriguing will be On Becoming a Guinea Fowl, an international indie that has a rare 100% "Certified Fresh" score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The movie follows a Zambian family whose secrets come out as funeral proceedings for their uncle take place. Interested?

Stream On Becoming a Guinea Fowl on Max in the US starting July 4.

Sinners (Max)

What I dubbed as the first great movie of the year, Sinners arrives on streaming in July, meaning there is little excuse if you're one of the few people that has not seen this excellent entry from Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler.

A blend of horror, action and music, Sinners is expertly made, written and acted, and should play just as well on your TVs at home as it did on the big screen.

Stream Sinners on Max in the US starting July 4.

Streaming plans for Sinners in the UK are unconfirmed; movie is currently available via on-demand.

Materialists, a new romance movie starring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal, is now playing in movie theaters and is definitely worth the watch (read our Materialists review if you need any convincing).

The 2025 new movie is the second feature from Celine Song, who had one of the best directorial debuts in recent memory with Past Lives.

However, despite this only being Song’s second movie, she actually had a couple of Easter eggs in Materialists that nods back to her past work. Did you catch them?

No worries if not, that’s where we come in. Let us fill you in on the pair of Materialists Easter eggs. FYI, some minor SPOILERS ahead, so if you haven’t seen the movie, here’s how to watch Materialists right now.

The play in Materialists is real

The first involves the off-(off?) Broadway play that Evans’ John is in and invites Johnson’s Lucy (and inadvertently Pascal’s Harry) to. We only see a quick scene from the play, but it features John sitting on stage with a woman that his character is on a date with. John and the other actress speak bluntly, reciting lines like “my mother and father had sex. I was born. I grew up. I entered this restaurant. I’m on a date.”

If you were a bit curious whether or not that play was real, it actually is, and it was written by none other than Song.

Titled Tom & Eliza, Song wrote the play in the mid 2010s and it was performed in 2016, as before she became an acclaimed filmmaker she worked as a playwright. The whole play features direct, rapid-fire language like we see in the Materialists scene, as the description from the New Play Exchange says it is about “two people marching relentlessly toward the future.”

In fact, the movie lets you know that this is Song’s play, as after the quick scene we see we catch up with John, Lucy and Harry outside the small theater and there is a poster of the play, with Celine Song’s name visible on it.

A Past Lives actor makes a cameo in Materialists

The other notable Easter egg in Materialists is a callback to Song’s Past Lives, as one of her main actors has a brief cameo in the movie. Not physically, but as a voice on a phone call that is critical to the characters.

Throughout the movie, Lucy is trying to find a good match for her client Sophie (Zoe Winters), who unfortunately has had a string of bad dates and failed matches. Lucy’s latest attempt is setting Sophie up with a man named Mark, who she believes checks a lot of boxes for what Sophie is looking for.

The morning after the date, Lucy calls Mark to find out how everything went. The voice of Mark is provided by John Magaro, who played Arthur (the husband to Greta Lee’s Nora) in Past Lives. This 30-second (or so) conversation is all we get from Magaro in the movie, but his character has a major presence.

Though Mark said he had a good time on the date, which excites Lucy as it’s been hard to find a match for Sophie, it is soon revealed that Sophie was assaulted by Mark. Lucy feels an incredible amount of guilt about how she could have missed that Mark was capable of something like that, which sends her on a complete reevaluation of her career and life.

The brief role was a complete 180 from Magaro’s nice-guy Arthur in Past Lives, but if you recognized the voice right away that likely paid a part in the shock of the reveal.

One other quick one, which isn’t really an Easter egg but is just an interesting fact for the movie. While we noted that Song was a playwright prior to becoming a filmmaker, for a brief time she was also a matchmaker, as she told Deadline. That clearly served as inspiration for Materialists.

Materialists is playing exclusively in movie theaters in the US, Canada and other regions; premieres in the UK on August 15.

This is Song’s second movie, with her first being the widely-acclaimed and Oscar-nominated Past Lives. Adding three major movie stars and a plot that offers a bit more comedy (though the movie has a maturity to its comedy and take on romance) made it one of the 2025 summer indie movies that we couldn’t wait to check out, and now we all can.

Materialists is still playing in US movie theaters, as well as in Canada, Australia and other international regions. However, UK movie fans looking to watch Materialists are going to have to wait a little bit, as the movie is releasing on August 15 in the UK.

Is Materialists streaming?

No, you cannot stream Materialists at this time. But the modern rom-com is available for at-home viewing via digital on-demand platforms.

US movie fans can buy or rent Materialists on Apple TV, Prime Video, Google Play, Fandango at Home, YouTube and more, including A24's own digital on-demand platform.

While we don’t know exactly when Materialists will be streaming, we do know where — HBO Max. WTW’s official Materialists review says the movie “will charm you with its honest take on modern love.” It definitely has charmed more than just us, as the movie has a “Fresh” score of 86% (as of publication) on Rotten Tomatoes.

After one of the best directorial debuts in recent memory with Past Lives, what does writer/director Celine Song have up her sleeves for her second movie, Materialists? How about a sophisticated take down on modern dating that also doubles as a sincere rallying cry for the value of love in our lives that will win you over with its charm.

Materialists centers on Lucy (Dakota Johnson), a professional matchmaker in New York City. She sees relationships as a numbers game/business — what traits are non-negotiables and how many boxes does someone check off for one of her clients. One day, she meets Harry (Pedro Pascal), a unicorn — the type of partner that has the whole package just about everyone would want, including Lucy. The two start to date, but the picture gets a little complicated when Lucy’s ex-boyfriend John (Chris Evans) pops back up in her life.

You can guess what happens from there — a love triangle where Lucy must pick which guy she thinks would be the better potential partner to spend the rest of her life with. However, where Materialists succeeds is that its romantic rivalry isn’t easy to call. Neither Pascal’s Harry or Evan’s John are unlikeable characters; they both truly seem to care for Lucy. The question then is what is more important to Lucy, the fact that someone like Harry is a perfect match, or the natural connection she has with John?

Helping the love triangle are the great performances by Pascal and Evans. Two of pop culture’s biggest crushes, Materialists is only going to solidify their appeal. Pascal plays Harry suave but sincere; he’s calculating, but a reveal later on shows why, in a scene Pascal plays well. Evans’ John, meanwhile, is a mess, but the actor gives John an affable quality; he also nails a pivotal scene that could become quotable among romance fans for years to come.

The weak link in the triangle is Johnson, but I’m having a hard time figuring out if it’s her performance or a rare weakness in Song’s script. Johnson plays Lucy a bit flat and detached for a lot of the movie, though there are moments where she adds a spark of sincerity to the character. However, Lucy’s character is meant to be cold and calculating — she literally describes herself that way at times. Did Johnson play that aspect of her character too much or did Song not give us enough of Lucy outside of her relationships/work to really get to know her? It’s one of the few elements of the movie that isn't firing on all cylinders.

What makes it more complex is that the calculations that these characters are doing is part of what makes the movie work. Lucy treats relationships like a business deal, to the extent that one of the best scenes of the movie features Lucy and Harry discussing why they like each other in terms of material assets that can be traded on the stock market. That may sound cold and unnaturalistic but, in addition to the demands that Lucy’s clients give her in cutaway scenes throughout the movie, is it all that different from the dating app culture, where people make decisions to swipe right or left based on things like height?

Yet, while we can see the connections to our own lives, setting the movie amongst the elite society of six-figure earners that could afford such personalized matchmaking services gives the movie a distance that makes it feel like a fairytale for the adult crowd.

While Materialists definitely has more of a Hollywood feel to it than Past Lives, Song is still able to portray mature, honest feelings about love and relationships that make it stand out from contemporary Hollywood romances. So while it may not check every box, Materialists is a movie worth falling for.

Materialists is playing exclusively in movie theaters starting June 13 in the US; it premieres on August 15 in the UK.

Friendship is not available as part of a streaming service at this time, but it is available to rent via digital on-demand platforms in the US.

We expect that Friendship’s streaming debut will eventually come on HBO Max, just as other A24 movies have recently.

I am stoked to watch Materialists, the latest movie from Past Lives’ director Celine Song and starring Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans; it’s my top-ranked must-watch indie movie this summer.

So I was excited to check out a new trailer (below) that premiered online on May 8. But that excitement turned to confusion pretty quickly when I heard an omnipotent voice-over narration being used.

If you’re not quite sure what I mean, do you remember the “In a world…” trend that movie trailers used to have where a voice not connected to the characters in the movie would describe the setting, plot, characters and even some of the themes of the movie? The narration in the Materialists trailer even starts out with “In the world…”

Now, this does not dampen my excitement for Materialists, which sees Johnson play a young matchmaker in New York City who herself has proven unlucky in love. But I couldn’t help but cringe a bit when watching the new trailer and wonder why A24, a movie studio usually aiming to be on the cutting edge of marketing, would opt for this odd choice.

My fellow millennials and older moviegoers will recall how voice over narration in trailers was more common in the 1990s, even making a celebrity out of Don LaFontaine, whose reading of “In a world” became iconic, lending his voice to more than 5,000 movie trailers according to Wikipedia. But eventually the trend faded out and honestly, I can’t recall many trailers that have used it in the last 10-15 years (I’m not including voice overs from characters in the movie used in trailers).

Usually in storytelling, you want to lean on the idea of show, don’t tell, so this Materialists trailer relying on a voice-over to give some background on Johnson’s character, Lucy, and a brief summary on some of the themes the movie is going to focus on is weird. That’s especially true considering Song proved herself to be able to beautifully write and film a powerful love story in Past Lives. Certainly, the powers that be didn’t feel the need to include a voice over in the first Materialists trailer.

I had two thoughts on why the Materialists went in this direction. First, perhaps they were thinking that adding the voice over could make it more accessible for those who rely on audio descriptions. The voice over could be providing additional context that may be harder to pick up for those who aren’t able to see the images as clearly; and it certainly helps when the trailer features text like its release window and talent involved.

The other thought was maybe Materialists wanted to invoke that nostalgic feeling. The movie is a romantic comedy, a genre that had its heyday back in the 1990s and early 2000s, but hasn’t been as successful at the box office in recent years. Adding to the nostalgic factor is that Madonna’s “Material Girl” is played in the trailer.

Whatever the reasoning, I’m personally not a huge fan of it. Maybe others do and this could be the start of a new surge in trailer voice overs. But ultimately, I still can't wait to see Materialists when it releases exclusively in movie theaters on June 13.

I will always recommend that people go see a movie in the theater, as no matter what kind of set up you have in your house, there’s nothing that can duplicate what a movie theater can deliver in terms of sound and picture quality (not to mention the mitigation of distractions; always put your phone away people). That being said, I can see some advantages of the home viewing experience for Warfare now that it is available to buy or rent via digital on-demand.

Warfare is the most intense movie I’ve seen this year. The movie, co-directed by Alex Garland and real-life veteran Ray Mendoza, recreates an actual mission in Iraq, adapted from the memories of the surviving soldiers. The movie is told almost entirely in real-time and offers an engrossing look at a battle and the physical and emotional toll it takes on soldiers.

The constant barrage of the battle once it gets underway shook the theater for a majority of the movie’s hour-and-a-half runtime. It felt like a 4D movie. Once the credits rolled, I was worn out. If you want that experience, then you can still watch Warfare in movie theaters. If you want to watch Warfare and its excellent filmmaking without your body shaking, then the digital option is a good alternative.

You can now buy or rent Warfare on Prime Video, Fandango at Home, Apple TV and other on-demand platforms in the US (the movie is not available on-demand in the UK at this time).

Warfare is one of the best reviewed movies of the year, with a 92% “Certified Fresh” score from critics and a 93% “Verified Hot” score from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

In addition to being directed by Garland and Mendoza, the movie stars a troop of notable young actors, including Will Poulter, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Cosmo Jarvis, Joseph Quinn, Michael Gandolfini, Kit Connor, Noah Centineo, Charles Melton and more.

If you need something a little less intense, a couple of notable charming movies are now available via digital on-demand as of May 6 — the Carey Mulligan-led The Ballad of Wallis Island and Barbie Ferreira’s Bob Trevino Likes It (both are also “Certified Fresh”).

One of the most iconic pairings in movie history, Denzel Washington and Spike Lee are together again, reteaming for the 2025 new movie Highest 2 Lowest. With the movie, Lee is paying homage to one of his cinematic icons, as the movie is his own interpretation of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 crime drama High and Low.

During a talk at a film festival in 2024, Lee said that while attending New York University film school he first got to see Kurosawa movies, which inspired him throughout his career. Specifically, he said how he took the three different perspectives presented in Rashomon and tweaked the idea for his breakout movie, She’s Gotta Have It.

But Highest 2 Lowest is the closest that Lee has come to straight adapting a Kurosawa movie, but of course we can expect plenty of unique aspects that only the Oscar-winning Spike Lee can provide.

Highest 2 Lowest release date

A24 is releasing Highest 2 Lowest on August 15 in select US movie theaters. Three weeks later, on September 5, the movie is set to premiere on the Apple TV Plus streaming service worldwide.

This is another A24 title that moviegoers can enjoy this year. Among the other A24 2025 movies are Parthenope, Warfare, Friendship, Materialists, Sorry, Baby, Eddington and The Smashing Machine.

Washington stars in Highest 2 Lowest as a music mogul whose life gets turned upside down by a ransom plot. The critical consensus on Sorry, Baby is very strong, as the movie has an impressive 96% “Certified Fresh” score on Rotten Tomatoes, with many calling Victor a “formidable talent.”

Victor’s only directing credit prior to Sorry, Baby was the TV series Eva vs Anxiety. As A24 details in the movie’s press notes, Victor hadn’t really imagined writing or directing their own movie, but during the lockdown of the pandemic she began writing and quickly found that she needed to tell this story of Agnes.

In addition to being recognized for their screenwriting, Victor’s director has been recognized by another major film festival, as Sorry, Baby was selected for the Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes.

The movie was shot over the course of three weeks in Massachusetts. The crew is predominantly female, including Mia Cioffi Henry as the cinematographer.

I’m not afraid to admit that I have a romantic side. A great love story on the big screen can be one of the most emotionally powerful viewing experiences.

I was reminded of that back in 2023 when I saw Past Lives and was immediately struck by the relationship at its center and one of the more incredible endings I’ve seen in a movie in some time. Because of that, I think Past Lives has to be considered for the best movie love stories of the 21st century.

You don’t have to just take my word for it though, because Past Lives has been added to Netflix in the US today [Thursday, May 1], so anyone with a subscription can watch the movie and judge for themselves.

The debut movie from Celine Song, Past Lives is a decade-spanning story about the relationship between Nora (Greta Lee) and Hae Sung (Teo Yoo). After bonding as children in Korea, Nora and Hae Sung lose touch after Nora’s family moves to North America. However, they reconnect as adults and eventually meet up in person in New York City, where Nora lives with her husband (John Magaro). But are Nora and Hae Sung connected by something more?

My Past Lives review gave the movie five-stars and named it my No. 3 best movie of 2023 (only behind Oppenheimer and The Holdovers, which is no ding in my books), it is “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes and it was nominated for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars. Those are all great qualifications, but other movies have similar credentials, and I’m not making grand statements about them being landmarks of 21st century cinema. But there’s something more to it, and it honestly may come down to the Past Lives ending.

I won’t spoil it for anyone who hasn’t seen the movie, but what I will say is that it features an incredible tracking shot and an amazing performance by Lee that may require tissues if you are someone who is known to cry during movies as it is utterly, achingly beautiful.

There are only a couple of other movies where the love story is the central thing released in the last 25 years that I’d in the same league as Past Lives. One is Wong Kar-Wai’s brilliant In the Mood for Love about neighbors who bond while their partners have extramarital affairs (currently streaming on Max in the US, on-demand in the UK), and the other is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, the Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet movie about a couple trying erase each other from their memories, written by Charlie Kaufman and directed by Michel Gondry (also streaming on Max in the US and on-demand in the UK).

Perhaps the quality that I admire most about all of these movies is that they aren’t simple love stories. Those can be their own fun watches, but Past Lives, like the other movies mentioned above, look at different complexities of love. In the case of Past Lives, the idea of fate, or “in yun,” the Korean word used in the movie. It is those mixes of larger ideas with a great script, acting and directing that make Past Lives something truly special.

And there’s a chance that Celine Song could have something else special for us soon, as she has a new movie coming out this summer, Materialists, starring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal.

Materialists will play exclusively in movie theaters starting June 13, but you can watch Past Lives now on Netflix in the US (it's available to rent from various sites in the UK).

Dwayne Johnson got his start in the world of entertainment inside the ring with his WWE persona The Rock. Well, his next movie, The Smashing Machine, is taking him back inside the ring, or accurately the octagon, as he portrays a famous UFC fighter, Mark Kerr.

Johnson has almost exclusively been starring in big-budget blockbusters and family movies in recent years (think the Fast and Furious franchise and Moana 2), but The Smashing Machine hails from A24, the fan-favorite distributor that releases more filmmaker-driven, character-based movies (some of their 2025 movies have included Parthenope and Warfare). So this marks a bit of a change-up for Johnson.

A documentary about Kerr, also titled The Smashing Machine, was released by HBO in 2002. In addition to charting his career, the documentary also focused on Kerr’s struggles with substance abuse and his personal relationships with his then-girlfriend and fellow mixed martial artist Mark Coleman.

The modern western is going to come to the UK a bit later, with the movie premiering on August 22.

It is quite the cast that has been brought together for Eddington, but headlining things are Joaquin Phoenix and Pedro Pascal, who play the town sheriff and mayor embroiled in the standoff that serves as the main plot of the movie.

This is the second time that Phoenix is working with Aster, with the two having previously worked together on Beau Is Afraid. Besides that, some other recent work from Phoenix has included Joker: Folie a Deux, Napoleon, C’mon C’mon and his Oscar-winning performance in Joker.

Pascal, meanwhile, is currently starring in The Last of Us season 2, but will also have a big presence on the big screen this summer. A week after Eddington premieres, Pascal is starring in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Fans have also seen him recently in Freaky Tales, Gladiator 2 and The Wild Robot.

How to watch Warfare in movie theaters

Warfare is playing in movie theaters in the US and UK.

In order to find out what time and where Warfare is playing near you, you should check out Fandango. Available both online and as an app, Fandango will allow you to see all of the movie theaters in your area and what showtimes are available. When you find the one you want, you can purchase your Warfare movie ticket through Fandango.

If you have a favorite movie theater to go to, you should look into movie theater subscription and memberships. These programs, offered by many US and UK movie theater chains, allow moviegoers to get free, discounted or monthly allotment of movie tickets, as well as deals on concessions and other moviegoing perks.

Is Warfare streaming?

Warfare is not available through a major streaming service, but you can now buy or rent Warfare at home via digital on-demand platforms.

As of May 6, Prime Video, Fandango at Home, Apple TV and other on-demand platforms in the US have Warfare available for digital download; it is not currently available for at-home viewing in the UK.

As for its eventual premiere on a streaming service, while we don’t know the when, all expectations for where Warfare is going to be streaming is on Max, as all recent A24 movies have made their streaming debuts on the platform.

As we mentioned, Danny and Michael Philippou made their feature directing debuts with Talk to Me in 2022. But prior to that, they both directed and starred in episodes of the TV series RackaRacka that aired in their home country of Australia.

It can be easy and quite relaxing to just stay in and watch a movie, new or old, from the comfort of your own couch. But when you see a good movie on the big screen, there’s something extra special about the experience. Looking ahead at the 2025 new movies coming to movie theaters in April, there are definitely a number of titles that I think could create those kinds of experiences.

Though the weather is getting warmer, we’re not quite at the summer blockbuster phase just yet (that is going to kick off in earnest with Marvel’s Thunderbolts in early May). Still, there are a number of big-budget movies coming this month that will warrant your attention. Below you’ll find the five movies coming to US movie theaters in April I’m most excited about (we’ll note if they have a different release date for the UK) and why they’re worth the price of a movie ticket (though if you’re looking to save some money, movie theater subscriptions and memberships are good things to explore).

I’ve included a full list of the 2025 April movie release schedule so you can know when a movie you’re interested, but I haven't mentioned, debuts. But first, here are the five April 2025 movies I can’t wait to watch (by order of release date):

The Amateur (April 11 everywhere)

Slow Horses is one of my favorite TV shows right now, so I am very intrigued to see what James Hawes, who directed all of Slow Horses season 1, gets to do in the big-screen spy thriller The Amateur. Rami Malek stars as a CIA decoder who is compelled to head into the field to track down the group that was responsible for the terrorist attack that killed his wife. While this scrawny analyst is not your typical CIA asset, he uses the skills he does have to take down his targets. Malek is joined in the movie by Rachel Brosnahan, Jon Bernthal, Michael Stuhlbarg, Holt McCallany, Julianne Nicholson and Laurence Fishburne. Any spy fan is going to want to check this one out.

FYI, The Amateur, based on the book of the same name by Robert Littell, is actually a remake. If you’re interested before or after seeing the movie, the 1981 version of The Amateur is streaming on Hulu in the US; via digital on-demand in the UK.

Warfare (April 11 US, TBD UK)

My anticipation for Alex Garland’s new movie rose when the Warfare Rotten Tomatoes score was revealed on March 28, as the movie is scoring solidly in the 90th percentile with the critics that have seen it. Garland, whose Ex Machina and Annihilation are two of my favorite sci-fi movies of the last decade, co-directed with real-life Iraqi War veteran Ray Mendoza to bring what is being described as one of the most brutal, realistic battle scenes to the big screen. And I mean the biggest screen, as Warfare is going to be playing on IMAX screens where available. This one definitely won’t be for the faint of heart, but early indications are this is the kind of movie the theatrical experience was made for.

Sinners (April 18 everywhere)

Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler have proven to be a fantastic team, having worked together on great movies Fruitvale Station, Creed and Black Panther. Any time these two get together is going to get me pumped, and that is without a doubt the case with Sinners. Jordan is playing dual roles as twin brothers who are putting on a party in the early 20th-century South, only for a great evil to put their lives in jeopardy. Joining Jordan in the movie are Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O’Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Li Jun Li, Omar Benson Miller and Delroy Lindo. A mix of action and horror, there should be plenty of entertainment on display here.

The Wedding Banquet (April 18 US, TBD UK)

If spy thrillers, action or action/horror movies aren’t your thing, don’t worry, there are other options this month. Perhaps best among them is The Wedding Banquet, which stars SNL’s Bowen Yang, Killers of the Flower Moon's Lily Gladstone and Star Wars’ Kelly Marie Train in an indie romantic comedy. The movie, a remake of an Ang Lee movie from the 90s, centers on two couples, one gay and one lesbian, who decide to help each other out by faking a heterosexual marriage for a conservative relative. After premiering at this year’s Sundance, where it got reviews that currently have it at a 96% “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences will get the chance to fall in love with it this month.

The Legend of Ochi (April 25 everywhere)

There’s a reason why we remember movies like E.T. and The Goonies so fondly — they have a certain magic quality that may be primarily aimed at kids but can resonate no matter how old you are. When I watch the trailer for The Legend of Ochi that is exactly the kind of feeling that I get. Part of that is definitely the titular creature, the Ochi, being done practically, which just elicits memories of the old school moviemaking that I grew up on. The movie may lean toward a slightly younger audience, but this could be a movie that the whole family enjoys.

One of the most anticipated 2025 new movies coming in April is Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza’s A24 war movie Warfare, set to release on April 11. Ahead of that, on March 28, the first reviews for the movie hit the internet and got the ball rolling on Warfare’s Rotten Tomatoes score.

Warfare is written and directed by Mendoza, an Iraq War veteran, and Garland, based on the real-life experience of SEAL Elliott Miller and his fellow soldiers during an evacuation from an apartment building in Ramadi, Iraq, after it comes under fire. Starring a cast of some of the best young actors (Will Poulter, Kit Connor, Joseph Quinn D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai and Charles Melton among them) with the stated goal of showing the events in “real time, using extended takes, meticulously constructed sets, and unmatched realism to capture the fog and chaos of war, and the indelible brotherhood that develops in its wake.”

That premise, and the chance to see it play out on an IMAX screen, had me very intrigued to see the movie by itself. Throw in Garland pairing his filmmaking skills with the experience of a real-life veteran and Warfare was already one of the top movies I can’t wait to see in April. Warfare then debuting with a 92% “Fresh” Rotten Tomatoes score only has me more excited to see the movie.

That score comes from a total of 26 reviews submitted to Rotten Tomatoes as of publication on March 28. More reviews will influence that score as we get closer to the Warfare release date, but with this strong start (and the fact that A24 is letting reviews hit this early) is a good sign that the buzz is going to keep growing for this movie.

Empire Magazine critic Alex Godfrey wrote “Free of the operatics of most supposed anti-war films, it’s all the more effective for its simplicity. It is respectfully gruelling.”

David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter said “Garland is working in peak form and with dazzling technical command in what’s arguably his best film since his debut, Ex Machina.”

AV Club’s Brianna Zigler, meanwhile, describes the movie as “a tense and damningly disturbing portrait of combat.”

Those who are a little less favorable of the movie mostly seem to indicate that the movie’s lack of characterization and brutal depictions was not as successful for them.

If these early reactions are getting you excited for Warfare, it premieres exclusively in movie theaters on April 11 in the US and April 18 in the UK.

Celine Song had one of the best debuts as a writer/director in recent memory with her beautiful romance drama Past Lives, which was nominated for two Oscars and earned plenty of rave reviews (it’s 95% “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes). So what is she doing for her much-anticipated follow-up? How about a star-studded romantic comedy, Materialists.

As with Past Lives, Song is reteaming with A24, as the specialty distributor is backing the movie. It joins a big slate of 2025 A24 movies, including Death of a Unicorn, Warfare, The Legend of Ochi, Friendship and more.

Materialists how to watch

Materialists is still playing in US movie theaters, but is also available to watch at home via digital on-demand. The movie is scheduled to release on August 15 in the UK.

Materialists cast

The cast of Materialists is led by the trio of Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal. All we know about their characters at this point is that Johnson is playing a matchmaker, while Evans and Pascal play a new love interest and her ex (unclear which is which).

Johnson broke out after starring in the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise and has since starred in titles like A Bigger Splash, Suspiria, The Peanut Butter Falcon, The Lost Daughter, Persuasion, Daddio and Madame Web.

Evans is best known for playing Steve Rogers/Captain America in the MCU, but his post-Marvel career includes movies like Knives Out, The Gray Man, Ghosted, Pain Hustlers and Red One.

Pascal, meanwhile, also has Marvel ties, as he stars as Reed Richards in the upcoming The Fantastic Four: First Steps, but he is also well-known for starring in The Last of Us, Gladiator 2, The Mandalorian, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent and Game of Thrones.

Materialists plot

Just as she did with Past Lives, Song wrote the screenplay for Materialists. Here is the synopsis for the movie via A24:

“A young, ambitious New York City matchmaker finds herself torn between the perfect match and her imperfect ex.”

As mentioned, Materialists is the second feature directorial effort from Celine Song. Prior to making her debut as a film director, Song was a playwright and theater director, while also being part of the writing team for multiple episodes on The Wheel of Time. But she clearly showed a knack for filmmaking with Past Lives.

She was awarded the Outstanding Directorial Achievement in First-Time Feature Film from the Director’s Guild of America, Best Director from the Film Independent Spirit Awards, Best Directorial Debut from the National Board of Review and a number of other awards and nominations for her directing. She was also Oscar-nominated for her original screenplay of Past Lives.

Materialists behind-the-scenes

In addition to reuniting with A24, Song is also reteaming with her Past Lives’ producers David Hinojosa of 2AM as well as Pamela Koffler and Christine Vachon of Killer Films. Song is also listed as a producer.

One of the most acclaimed movies of 2024, and the recipient of 10 Oscar nominations (including Best Picture), The Brutalist is now available to buy or rent at home via digital on-demand platforms. This makes the movie that WTW’s official The Brutalist review called a “cinematic masterpiece” as easy to watch as ever, just a couple of weeks away from the Oscars (March 2).

Written and directed by Brady Corbet, The Brutalist stars Adrien Brody as Laszlo Toth, a brilliant architect who had to flee post-war Europe to America. Struggling with the realities of the American dream, Laszlo is given an opportunity at success by a wealthy benefactor, tasking him to lead a monumental project. In addition to Brody, The Brutalist stars Guy Pearce, Felicity Jones, Joe Alwyn, Raffey Cassidy, Stacy Martin and Alessandro Nivola.

The Brutalist earned a “Certified Fresh” score of 93% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and is tied for the second most 2025 Oscar nominations with 10, which in addition to Best Picture includes nominations for Best Director, Best Actor (Brody), Best Supporting Actor (Pearce, Best Supporting Actress (Jones), Best Original Screenplay, Best Score, Best Cinematography and more.

You can buy or rent The Brutalist via Prime Video, Fandango at Home or Apple TV in the US. The movie is not currently included as part of any major streaming service, and no details about when that may change, but we can make an educated guess as to where it will be streaming. As nearly all other A24 movies have recently, The Brutalist will likely be made available to stream exclusively on Max.

Part of the appeal of The Brutalist is its grand scope that was meant to be seen on a big screen, particularly as it was shot and shown in 70mm (where available). However, one advantage of the movie being available for home viewing is it may seem less daunting of a watch. Though the three-and-a-half-hour movie did include an intermission in theaters, being able to pause it whenever and perhaps even stretch the movie over a night or two may appeal to some viewers (not how I’d recommend watching it, but it is an option).

With the arrival of The Brutalist to home-viewing, it now joins seven other Best Picture nominees currently available to stream or rent via digital on-demand. That list includes Anora, Conclave, Dune: Part Two, Emilia Perez, Nickel Boys, The Substance and Wicked. A Complete Unknown is scheduled to arrive on digital on-demand platforms on Tuesday, February 25. That means only I’m Still Here is not available to watch at home.

With the likes of Detroiters and I Think You Should Leave, Tim Robinson has become a brand of humor unto himself. Now he gets to show that off with his first leading role in the movie Friendship, where he and Paul Rudd attempt to portray the weirdness of adult male bonding.

This is another 2025 new movie entry from A24, and this one feels right up the fan-favorite distributor’s alley. It joins a roster of A24 2025 movies that includes Parthenope, Death of a Unicorn, Warfare, The Legend of Ochi, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You and more.

Tim Robinson leads the way in Friendship as Craig, a suburban dad who doesn’t have many friends. As we mentioned, Robinson is best known for the TV shows that he starred and created, including Detroiters and I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson, but he’s also appeared in Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Chip n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers and, most recently, a popular 2025 Super Bowl commercial.

Starring opposite Robinson is Paul Rudd as Craig’s new neighbor. Rudd needs little introduction, as the actor is Ant-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and has starred in notable comedies like Anchorman, Wet Hot American Summer, the new Ghostbusters movies and, most recently, Only Murders in the Building season 4.

Kate Mara (Class of ‘09) and Jack Dylan Grazer (Shazam! Fury of the Gods) are the other confirmed members of the Friendship cast.

Andrew DeYoung is the director of Friendship, in addition to writing the movie. This is DeYoung’s first feature movie directing job, though he has consistently worked on some major TV shows in recent years, including The Decameron, Our Flag Means Death, PEN15, Miracle Workers, Dave and Man Seeking Woman. He also earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special for the 2022 TV special Would It Kill You to Laugh?, which he also directed.

Gary Oldman has been widely praised for her performance as Jackson Lamb in Slow Horses, a slobby drunk leading a team of cast off spies. But in his latest movie, Parthenope, he instead plays a stylish drunk, and real-life figure, that offers a key bit of insight to the titular character. So who does Gary Oldman play in Parthenope?

That would be acclaimed American author John Cheever. While Oldman's performance as Cheever is only in the movie for a little bit, it is nonetheless pivotal for the growth of Parthenope (Celeste Della Porta). As Parthenope, her brother Raimondo (Daniele Rienzo) and their friend Sandrino (Dario Atia) spend some time in Capri over the summer, she just happens to meet Cheever, whose work she admires, at the hotel pool. Cheever is quite drunk when she first meets him, but he observes that people are stunned by Parthenope's beauty, which gives her a special kind of power, something that Parthenope then begins to use to her advantage. They have one more encounter along a path at night when Parthenope asks if she can walk with Cheever, but he says no, not wanting to steal a second of her youth.

But who was John Cheever in real life? Continue on below for some more details about the famous author.

Who was John Cheever?

Cheever was a short-story writer and novelist, whose notable works include "Falconer", "The Enormous Radio", "The Swimmer" and "The Wapshot Chronicle", the latter of which won him the National Book Award in 1957. He also won a Pulitzer Prize for fiction for "The Stories of John Cheever" in 1978. According to Britanica, Cheever’s work was described as chronicling the life, manners and morals of suburban, middle-class America.

In Parthenope, Cheever is depicted as a drunk and mentions that he has a fondness for men. Cheever was a known alcoholic for much of his life, but at the time he meets Parthenope (the early 1970s) in the movie, Cheever had not come out publicly, so he is sharing an intimate detail with this young woman. In fact, as Cheever was married and had multiple children, Cheever’s sexual orientation was not revealed until after his death in 1982. As described in a feature from The Guardian, Cheever’s daughter Susan first shared those details in a memoir, Home Before Dark, though she describes Cheever as bisexual. Cheever’s son Benjamin would then edit and publish letters from the author that further revealed Cheever’s homosexuality.

Parthenope is not the first time that Cheever has been included as part of a TV show or movie. Perhaps most famously, the TV show Seinfeld had an episode, aptly titled “The Cheever Letters,” where a stash of letters from Cheever is found to be in the possession of George’s (Jason Alexander) girlfriend Susan’s (Heidi Swedberg) father (Warren Frost), revealing that her father had at least an emotional relationship with Cheever.

Parthenope is now playing in select US movie theaters, expanding to additional markets in the coming weeks; it premieres in the UK on May 2. Read WTW’s Parthenope review for our thoughts on the movie as a whole.

If the rise of foreign language movies contending for Oscars and making headlines (Emilia Perez, I'm Still Here to name a couple) has you intrigued to give more movies with subtitles a chance, perhaps A24 and Paolo Sorrentino’s Parthenope is not the best place to start. I don’t mean that as a critique of the movie, which I found quite enchanting, but it is also a challenging watch that may frustrate those more accustomed to Hollywood’s style.

Sorrentino, whose The Great Beauty won an Oscar for (what at the time was) Best Foreign Film, wrote and directed Parthenope as a love letter to Naples, his hometown. The movie follows the life of Parthenope (Celeste Della Porta), a gorgeous woman named after the Greek colony that first settled the city. Over her life we see her experience love and heartbreak, life’s beauty and its ugliness as it appears in Naples.

This was actually only the second movie of Sorrentino’s that I have seen on the big screen, and the first since his English-language movie Youth from 2015. To me Sorrentino’s movies have always had an ethereal quality to them, which was never easy to fully appreciate when watching at home, with distractions more readily available, on a smaller screen, where the movie’s visuals and tone were harder to be taken in by. But watching Parthenope in the dark of a theater lured me in and transfixed me to the journey of this young woman, even if there are plenty of strange and what the f**k moments.

Part of what makes Parthenope so alluring is Della Porta. One of the main conceits of the movie is that Parthenope’s beauty is unlike anything many have seen, and sure enough Della Porta is a vision on the screen in her first starring role. Yet she is more than just a model of desire. Sorrentino and Della Porta collectively create a fascinating lead character, whose search for a greater understanding of life is one I was contently took part in.

If some were interested in Parthenope because of Gary Oldman appearing in the movie, you may be disappointed to learn that Oldman is present for just a few scenes. However, as American author John Cheevers, he delivers some key advice to a young Parthenope. But a positive for the movie is that we don’t miss Oldman’s presence as a number of memorable supporting characters enter and exit the movie, while Della Porta effectively keeps our interest.

A nod should also be given to composer Lele Marchitelli, who crafted a beautiful score, as well as cinematographer Daria D’Antonio for capturing stunning vistas of Naples. You could use Sorrentino’s movies as a tourist promotion for Italy, the visuals are that good, but there is always something deeper meaning behind the beauty that makes his movies rich in theme and discussion.

While there will be plenty of moments worth discussing and some extended examination, I was a bit disappointed that Sorrentino chose to be so on the nose in a couple of places. Part of the plot of the movie is Parthenope’s study of anthropology (the study of humans), which she continues outside of the classroom with her various experiences. Yet still she claims not to know what anthropology is, only for her professor (Silvio Orlando) to eventually give her (and the audience) a direct answer, in case we hadn’t picked it up yet. But there’s an even more blatant example involving the Miracle of San Gennaro that I won’t go into details on, but when that storyline concluded I couldn’t help but roll my eyes.

Parthenope is likely not for everyone, as some could see it as a stereotypical example of foreign movies wanting to be seen as capital “A” art. For my part, I wouldn’t say that Parthenope is among the best foreign movies I’ve seen recently, but what it does have is an alluring quality that has made me gain a greater appreciation for Sorrentino’s work and wishing I had seen more of his movies on the big screen to see how that may have changed my experience.

Parthenope is now playing in limited US movie theaters, expanding to additional markets in the following weeks. The movie premieres in the UK on May 2.

The 2025 Sundance Film Festival has come to an end, helping jump start the 2025 new movie year by premiering a number of movies that are going to get people’s attention over the course of the next 12 months. While I wasn’t in Park City, Utah, I paid close attention to what movies were garnering some major buzz and keeping an eye on early reviews from critics in attendance, looking to ID some of the potential breakout Sundance movies from this year’s program.

As many movie fans know, Sundance is one of the biggest film festivals in the world, where a number of movies that become eventual hits and award-winners make their premiere. Just look at last year’s offerings, which included Oscar-nominees A Real Pain, A Different Man and Sugarcane, as well as critical darlings like Didi, Love Lies Bleeding and My Old Ass. And of course a few years ago Sundance was where Best Picture winner CODA premiered. Long story short, every year we get a couple of big movies from Sundance, so what 2025 Sundance movies have the chance to be the breakouts?

Only time will truly bear that out, but I’m happy to give you my picks for the five Sundance 2025 movies I’m going to actively keep an eye out for this year. While a number of Sundance movies are going to be coming out within a few months of the festival (Sly Lives!, The Ballad of Wallis Island, The Wedding Banquet and The Legend of Ochi), these picks are movies that either don’t have a release date yet or are coming much later in the year; ones that I and other movie fans are going to be eagerly awaiting to watch for ourselves.

Without further ado, let’s get to my picks (in alphabetical order):

If I Had Legs I’d Kick You

Mary Bronstein’s If I Had Legs I’d Kick You came into Sundance as one of the buzzier titles as it starred Rose Byrne and already had distribution from A24. That buzz was justified when the movie screened to strong reviews. As of February 3, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You has a 90% “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critic Ty Burr describing it as a movie “with the intensity cranked to 11 and stays there for the entire running time,” and the New York Post’s Johnny Oleksinski calling Byrne’s performance “unforgettable.” Throw in rare acting appearances from rapper A$AP Rocky and upcoming Oscar host Conan O’Brien and there’s a lot to be intrigued about in this dark comedy about a single mom’s life crashing down around her.

A24 hasn’t shared any release info as of yet, only that If I Had Legs I’d Kick You is “coming soon.”

Sorry, Baby

Sundance is also a place for brand new filmmakers to emerge, and one of the biggest potential breakouts is Sorry, Baby writer, director and star Eva Victor. Victor stars as Agnes, a graduate-student turned professor that must contend with past trauma while everyone else’s life appears to move on (among the supporting cast is Naomi Ackie, Lucas Hedges, John Carroll Lynch, Louis Cancelmi and Kelly McCormack). In addition to earning rave reviews (as of publication it has a 100% “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes), Victor won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award for her debut movie.

A24 has attached its label to this movie as well, acquiring Sorry, Baby during the festival. However, no info on a potential release date has been shared.

Together

Because of my love last year for The Substance, I’ve become more open to trying out movies in the body horror genre, especially with the credentials that Together has. From writer/director Michael Shanks and starring Alison Brie and Dave Franco, the movie follows a couple as they move to the countryside, resulting in a supernatural incident that alters their relationship, existence and physical form. This is another one of this year’s Sundance movie that scored 100% on Rotten Tomatoes from the critics that saw it at the festival, and it was one of the few movies that received a distribution deal during the proceedings, with Neon picking it up.

Together is officially set for an August 1 release date.

Train Dreams

It's really early to make a call on which 2025 Sundance movies are going to be Oscar contenders at next year’s ceremony, but Train Dreams is definitely one that has to be considered among the favorites. From the team that made the Oscar-nominated Sing Sing, Clint Bentley and Greg Kwedar, this new movie starring Joel Edgerton, Felicity Jones, Kerry Condon and William H. Macy is a period drama set at the start of the 20th century following a man who is helping build America’s railroads, seeing a world “irrevocably transforming before his very eyes,” says the official description. A review from Brian Tallerico of RogerEbert.com says you don’t just watch Train Dreams, “you breathe it in” (the movie’s Rotten Tomatoes score as of publication is 91% “Fresh”).

Netflix acquired Train Dreams, but no details about its release by the streamer have been shared.

Twinless

Whenever you win one of the top prizes at a festival, you’re going to drum up a good bit of interest. Such is the case with Twinless, a dramedy written and directed by James Sweeney, which he also stars in alongside Dylan O’Brien. The two actors play bereaved twins that meet at a support group and form an unlikely friendship. Twinless left Sundance with the Audience Award in the US Dramatic competition and an Special Jury Acting Award for O’Brien, some nice hardware to go along with its 100% Rotten Tomatoes score. Some people not at the fest got to watch Twinless as it was available through Sundance’s online program, however the movie was taken down before the festival ended because there were issues with online leaks.

Despite the notable wins, Twinless has not been acquired for distribution as of publication.

I’m eagerly awaiting the chance to see these Sundance movies at some point this year. Are there any movies that you heard buzz about that you’re excited to watch?

If I Had Legs I'd Kick You has been given an October 10 limited release in movie theaters by A24, according to the A24 press site. That means that the movie will likely debut in Los Angeles and New York before being released to other parts of the US in subsequent weeks.

At this time we don't have any info on a UK release date for If I Had Legs I'd Kick You.

If I Had Legs I’d Kick You cast

Byrne headlines the movie as Linda. Byrne is a two-time Emmy-nominated actress for her role in Damages, but more recently she has starred in the Apple TV Plus original series Physical and Platonic. On the movie side, she is best known for starring in Bridesmaids, Spy and Neighbors.

Two of Byrne’s most notable co-stars in the movie are individuals not first known for their acting: Conan O’Brien and A$AP Rocky. O’Brien, who for her was one of the preeminent figures of late-night TV and will soon be the host of the 2025 Oscars, plays Byrne’s therapist in the movie. It’s not clear what Rocky’s role is, but the well-known hip-hop artist has had a few previous acting credits, including Dope and Monster.

The rest of the cast includes Danielle Macdonald (The Tourist), Lark White, Ivy Wolk (Anora), Daniel Zolghardi (Y2K) and Delaney Quinn (Power Book III: Raising Kanan).

If the early slate of 2025 new movies isn’t overly appealing to you, then two of this year’s biggest Oscar 2025 (recognizing 2024’s best movies) hopefuls are returning to movie theaters this weekend, January 17, to entice you to your local theater — Demi Moore’s The Substance and Colman Domingo’s Sing Sing.

The Substance is being released in 350 movie theaters across the US, per IndieWire, while Sing Sing is set to be shown in 500 movie theaters, according to The Hollywood Reporter; in addition, A24 is also going to screen the movie inside correctional facilities in 46 states To find out if and where the movies are going to be playing near you, a great option to check out is Fandango.

Both of these movies are seen as strong contenders to receive a Best Picture nomination when Oscar nominations are officially announced on Thursday, January 23. Their stars are highly likely to be recognized as well, with Domingo a regular fixture among the Best Actor nominations of other award bodies and Moore, following her win at the Golden Globes, building momentum as a potential Oscar winner. If you’ve been wanting to see these movies as they’ve built their awards profile, these re-releases give you a perfect chance to do just that.

If you still need some background through, Sing Sing is a drama about a real-life program that ran at New York’s Sing Sing Correctional Facility where incarcerated men work on their rehabilitation through performing stage productions. Domingo stars as a veteran of the program, who takes another prisoner new to it all under his wing, the latter played by Clarence Maclin, himself a real-life participate of the program. Sing Sing is “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes with a score of 97%.

Though Sing Sing was originally released back in July 2024, it has not been made available for at-home viewing, so this re-release is the only way that people can catch up with the movie at this time.

As for The Substance, this sci-fi, body-horror drama sees Moore star as an actress who is being forced out of the spotlight because of her age. To combat this, she takes the mysterious “Substance,” which promises a “more perfect you.” However, you must strictly adhere to the rules or face significant consequences. You can read WTW’s The Substance review to find out why we loved the movie, but other critics did as well, with The Substance earning a “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, coming in at 89%.

If you can’t make it to movie theaters to watch The Substance, the movie is available via digital on-demand platforms and is streaming on specialty platform Mubi.

Other movies up for Oscars are still playing in movie theaters, including Babygirl, The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Nickel Boys, September 5 and Wicked. A number of the biggest contenders are also now available to watch at home, including A Real Pain, Anora, Conclave and Wicked (as the musical gets the best of both worlds).

Again, expect to hear many of these movies again earn Oscar nominations when they are officially announced on January 23.

I'm also specifically picking movies that are new to streaming this month — in this case these are 10 movies that are landing on one of the major streamers for the first time or returning to a streamer's library after being offline entirely or only available to rent via digital on-demand.

So without further ado, here are my picks for the 10 movies to stream in January.

Back in Action (Netflix)

For this brand new action movie starring Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx there really couldn’t be a better title. Back in Action is the first for Diaz since 2014, while for Foxx it is a triumphant moment after he suffered a brain bleed around the time of filming this movie; even director Seth Gordon is having a bit of a comeback, with this being his first feature movie since 2017’s Baywatch. Then just in terms of the movie itself, Diaz and Foxx star as former spies pulled back into the world of espionage when their covers are exposed. Here’s hoping this is a fun action comedy.

A Different Man (Max)

The early parts of the new year are always a great time to catch up on some movies from the previous year you may have missed. One option this month is the critically acclaimed A Different Man. Sebastian Stan stars as an aspiring actor who has neurofibromatosis (a genetic disorder that causes benign tumors and growths) and undergoes a radical surgery to alter his appearance, only to lose out on a role he was born to play to someone else. Stan has earned many award nominations for his performance (including from the Golden Globes), as has his co-star Adam Pearson, who has neurofibromatosis in real life.

Paper Moon (Paramount Plus)

Peter Bogdanovich’s Paper Moon is a beautiful, hilarious movie about a roving conman whose scheme gets complicated when he is forced to travel with his alleged daughter. Real-life father and daughter Ryan and Tatum O’Neal are magical opposite one another (Tatum O’Neal would win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her performance, the youngest actress to ever win a competitive Oscar). Other highlights include another great turn from Madeline Kahn, the gorgeous black-and-white photography and the movie’s brilliant script.

Schindler’s List (Netflix)

Steven Spielberg may best be known for his action-packed, fantastical blockbusters like Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, ET and Jurassic Park, but it is entirely fair to say that Schindler’s List is the director’s best work (all of those movies listed are on WTW’s 100 best movies of all time list). The director’s Best Picture-winning ode for those lost during the Holocaust and the great act of humanity by Oskar Schindler to help save the lives of a few thousand Jewish people is one of the most profound movies ever made. It’s not an easy watch, but it is an important and worthwhile one.

Seabiscuit (Paramount Plus)

The third straight movie set in the first half of the 20th century I’m singling out for in this list, Seabiscuit is a classic sports drama that is based on the true story of a little horse that could. That’s simplifying it a bit, but it tells how the undersized horse Seabiscuit became a national sensation and helped lift the lives of a group of individuals. It features a great main cast of Tobey Maguire, Jeff Bridges, Chris Cooper and Elizabeth Banks and carries a winning spirit all the way across the finish line.

Sorry to Bother You (Hulu)

Sorry to Bother You writer and director Boots Riley is one of a kind, as is quickly evident in his debut feature. LaKeith Stanfield stars as a man struggling to find a footing in the professional world when he learns that he can be more successful if he employs a "white" voice while working as a telemarketer. It only gets crazier (and I mean really crazy) from there but it's definitely worth a watch.

Touch (Prime Video)

One of the 15 movies shortlisted for the Oscars Best International Film award this year, Touch hails from Iceland and tells a decade-spanning story about a man as he attempts to find his first love 50 years after she mysteriously disappeared. The cast will likely be unknown to most (though Mike Leigh regular Ruth Sheen has a role in the movie), but you can take the critics’ support of it as a good sign, as Touch is “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes with a score of 92%.

Unstoppable (Prime Video)

Unstoppable got a brief run in movie theaters late in 2024 (from which it was “Certified Fresh”) and hits Prime Video this month. It tells the true story of Anthony Robles (played by rising star Jharrel Jerome), who despite being born with just one leg becomes a standout collegiate wrestler. Jennifer Lopez, Don Cheadle, Bobby Cannavale and Michael Pena also star in this inspiring sports drama.

Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl (Netflix)

The classic claymation duo Wallace & Gromit are back with their latest adventure, Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl. The latest Wallace & Gromit movie is once again earning raves and awards, including nominations for Best Animated Film from the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards.

If you want to know what critics think about Death of a Unicorn before you opt to go and see it, as of April 3 the movie has a "Rotten" rating on Rotten Tomatoes, coming in just under the 60% mark.

Death of a Unicorn director

In addition to writing the screenplay, Alex Scharfman is directing Death of a Unicorn, his first feature directing credit. Scharfman does have a good bit of Hollywood experience as a producer though, with credits that include Blow the Man Down, Resurrection and House of Spoils.

Nicole Kidman is one of the leading figures in Hollywood as an Oscar-winner and prolific producer, but what if she had other desires that run counter to her perceived status? That is in general one of the various dynamics in Kidman’s new movie, the psychological drama Babygirl.

Written and directed by Halina Reijn (Bodies Bodies Bodies), Babygirl stars Kidman as Romy, a CEO at a tech company who risks everything she has — her career and her family — as she begins an affair with a young intern, Samuel (Harris Dickinson). But part of the appeal for Romy is not just that Samuel is younger, but that she cedes some of her power to him, allowing him to take control and tell her what to do.

Much like Romy, Babygirl can struggle at times with what it wants to be. It teeters between a psychological drama, a dark satire about power dynamics and at times is oddly farcical. It feels like Reijn is trying to get across multiple ideas about women’s roles in today’s society, ones that will almost certainly elicit numerous think pieces about the movie. That can put it at a bit of a distance for audiences, but there is something alluring about the movie that made me still enjoy it overall.

Notice I did not describe Babygirl as a “sexy” psychological drama. While many may think because of its subject matter that Reijn would lean into the idea of this being a sexy movie, at least from my perspective the opposite is true. The situations we are presented with are mostly unsexy and uncomfortable, as the characters and audience must deal with what it is they are doing and why. That changes little by little throughout the movie as Romy and Sameul better understand what they want out of their illicit relationship, but it’s never not awkward.

To their credit though, Kidman and Dickinson help keep you as willing viewers of this story. That should be little surprise for Kidman, who is her usual exceptional self here; we really shouldn’t take that for granted, but she’s just so consistently good it’s hard to appreciate what she does fully. For Dickinson, this is one of his better performances in his young career, as he creates an intriguing character in Samuel. However, we don’t get quite enough into his own psychology for us to fully understand the character (in fairness, this isn’t his story).

Babygirl is meant to challenge audiences, primarily by the expectations that people have in place for Kidman’s Romy. She is a CEO in a relationship with an intern, which has obviously been the beginning of many scandalous headlines; but does she really have the power if she is the one that actually stands to lose more if the affair is discovered? She’s also an aspirational figure for other women in her company/industry, who want and expect her to continue lifting fellow women up; but is it her responsibility to be an unassailable figure in order to do that?

They are intriguing ideas, and credit to Reijn for attempting to tackle them, but they can overtake the emotion of the story. Meanwhile, the supporting cast, which includes Antonio Banderas, Sophie Wilde and Esther McGregor, are mostly superfluous, there to occasionally challenge Kidman’s position in what her role needs to be but not be overly deep characters in their own right.

Babygirl is probably going to be divisive for many; it’s definitely not one I’d recommend seeing with the family over Christmas. For myself, I mostly liked it, but it did feel like it was as (if not more) interested in asking questions of the audience as it was in telling its story.

Having a movie "based on a true story” is standard practice in Hollywood, but I don’t know if I can ever recall a movie saying that it is "based on the memory of the people who lived it" before. That’s how A24 is teasing their 2025 new movie, Warfare, a war story that was co-written and co-directed by an Iraq War veteran, alongside noted filmmaker Alex Garland.

A24 has become one of the most popular labels in Hollywood these days. Warfare is just one of many movies that A24 has planned for 2025, including Parthenope, The Legend of Ochi, The Smashing Machine and more.

Alex Garland movies

Warfare behind the scenes

At this time we also know the movie is, unsurprisingly, going to be rated R in the US.

Daniel Craig is making a hard right turn from his most famous role, James Bond, but is receiving some of the best marks of his career for the 2024 new movie from Luca Guadagnino, Queer. Queer is now playing, but not necessarily everywhere, so we’re to help you figure out when, where and how you watch Queer right here.

The movie is based on a novel by William S. Burroughs about an American ex-pat who forms a meaningful connection with a young student. Following the movie’s screenings at numerous 2024 fall film festivals, it has received a good bit of buzz, particularly for Craig, who could be in contention for his first Oscar nomination with the movie.

Queer is now playing in US and UK movie theaters.

To see when and where Queer is playing near you, you can check out Fandango, which shows you all of the movie theaters in your area where the movie is playing and available showtimes. You can also purchase your movie ticket for your preferred screening directly through the website.

If you’re a regular at a particular movie theater, you may want to look into signing up for a movie theater subscription and membership program. In addition to allowing you to see what movies are playing at your favorite movie theater, these programs also offer free, discounted and monthly allotment of movie tickets, as well as other moviegoing perks like deals on concessions. Numerous US and UK movie theater chains offer subscription/membership programs.

Is Queer streaming?

At this time, Queer is not available to stream or watch online in any way; it is only playing in movie theaters.

We don’t have any info on Queer’s home-viewing plans at this time, but based on a few things we can make some educated guesses. Primarily, as an A24 movie, Queer is most likely to make its eventual streaming debut on Max for US consumers. If you’re curious about a potential timeline, our best example is the recent A24 movie MaXXXine, which premiered in movie theaters in July 2024 and made its premiere on Max on October 18, so about three months. However, all movies are different, so we’ll keep an eye on Queer’s streaming plans.

Prior to streaming, Queer is almost assuredly going to be made available to rent or buy via digital on-demand first, so we’ll also keep you posted on those plans.

In addition to Daniel Craig, the movie stars Drew Starkey, Lesley Manville, Jason Schwartzman, Henrique Zaga and Omar Apollo.

This is Guadagnino’s second movie released in 2024, following Challengers. He is two for two on having his movies be “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes, with Queer earning a respectable 78% rating from critics.

In case you’re curious, the movie is rated R (no one under 17 without supervision) in the US and has a runtime of two hours and 15 minutes.

US audiences have become a little more willing to embrace foreign language movies in recent years, with movies like Parasite, RRR and Anatomy of a Fall becoming solid hits. The next possible such movie is Parthenope, which comes from acclaimed Italian filmmaker Paolo Sorrentino and stars Gary Oldman alongside a cast of Italian actors, including a newcomer in the titular lead role.

Parthenope is going to feature plenty of Italian dialogue for sure, but with Oldman, the movie is going to be partly in English as well, which could help lower the barrier of entry for some. But if anyone knows how to turn this kind of movie into a hit it’s A24, who is distributing Parthenope. They did so with another movie that balanced English and a foreign language, Past Lives.

Gary Oldman is the big name in the cast, as the Oscar winner (Darkest Hour) and current star of hit spy series Slow Horses, plays real-life American novelist John Cheever.

The movie’s main star though is newcomer Celeste Dalla Porta, as she plays the title character Parthenope. Dalla Porta had a bit part in Sorrentino’s previous movie The Hand of God and a role in the Italian limited series Red Mirror.

The rest of the Parthenope cast is made up of Stefania Sandrell, Silvio Orlando, Luisa Ranieri, Isabella Ferrari, Silvia Degrandi, Lorenzo Gleijeses, Daniele Rienzo, Dario Aita, Marlon Joubert, Alfonso Santagata, Biagio Izzo and Peppe Lanzetta.

Sorrentino shot the movie in Naples, Italy, marking the second time he used his childhood home as the location for one of his movies, after The Hand of God.

Part of the reason that movie trailers have become so highly anticipated is that previewing upcoming movies has turned into an art form unto itself, with styles and trends. So it’s unique when a movie takes a new approach to its trailer. Usually that comes in the form of a song choice and how clips are spliced together, but for The Brutalist trailer, A24 did something that I can’t recall seeing in another trailer in recent memory (and I watch a lot of movie trailers).

For background, The Brutalist is a 2024 new movie from director Brady Corbet and starring Adrien Brody. Co-written by Corbet and Mona Fastvold, the movie is a historical epic about a Jewish immigrant coming to America after World War 2, chronicling his struggles and rise as he works as an architect. The movie also stars Felicity Jones, Guy Pearce, Joe Alwyn, Raffey Cassidy, Stacy Martin, Emma Laird, Isaach De Bankolé and Alessandro Nivola. Having received high praise on the film festival circuit and expected to be an Oscar contender, The Brutalist releases exclusively in select US movie theaters on December 20.

Just about all of that information is presented in The Brutalist trailer, but in a unique way. As quick snippets of scenes from the movie play, text detailing everything from A24 to the cast and other credits to featuring a quote describing the movie as “monumental" scroll left across the screen. While this may not seem like that big of a deal, I’ll be honest, it took me a minute to get used to it. We can’t help but have been a little bit conditioned for movie trailers to have certain formats, so to see something more unique like this is jarring at first. But I do like it.

It’s not flashy but it catches your attention as it challenges the norm. I also love that it feels sparing. We don’t really get any concrete plot details, but the images give us a general idea of the journey to America that Brody’s character has and the work that helps him build his new life. In a time where movie trailers can often reveal too much (how many times has a trailer spoiled what could have been a big reveal in a movie), it’s nice that The Brutalist is going for a minimalist approach to intrigue audiences rather than lay it all out for them.

2024 has seen some big trailers, from Kinds of Kindness’ use of “Sweet Dreams” becoming its own viral trend to Deadpool & Wolverine peeling back major cameos to the Megalopolis fiasco of using fake critic quotes. The Brutalist’s unique presentation adds to an interesting year of movie trailers. I wouldn’t expect this to become a norm, but it’s a cool way for the movie to stand out.

The Brutalist releases in select US movie theaters on December 20 before expanding in subsequent weeks. It is scheduled to hit the UK on January 24, 2025.

A24’s filmography has been predominantly geared toward more adult audiences (recent entries like MaXXXine, Babygirl and Heretic being prime examples), but its upcoming The Legend of Ochi looks like it may be trying to emulate classics like E.T., The Goonies, Paddington and others, ones that all members of the family can enjoy.

The Legend of Ochi hails from Isaiah Saxon, who is making his feature directing debut with the movie and also wrote the original screenplay. Add in some popular and well known actors and a creature that is sure to win over some people with its cuteness, and you have an enticing option among the slate of 2025 new movies.

Helena Zengel takes on the lead role of Yuri in The Legend of Ochi, the young girl that finds and befriends a baby ochi. This is Zengel’s second major Hollywood movie, following her starring role opposite Tom Hanks in the 2020 movie News of the World.

She’s being join by an impressive lineup of Hollywood veterans, including Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard (most recently seen in Saturday Night); Emily Watson, who is starring in the HBO series Dune: Prophecy; and the always busy Willem Dafoe, who starred in four 2024 movies, Kinds of Kindness, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Saturday Night and Nosferatu.

The Legend of Ochi has been seen by critics, who have shared their thoughts on the movie, giving it a "Certified Fresh" score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Legend of Ochi behind the scenes

Isaiah Saxon may be making his feature directing debut with The Legend of Ochi, but he already has a reputation among the filmmaking community. His work in music videos and short films, particularly his 2008 Björk: Wanderlust music video when he was part of a duo known as Encyclopedia Pictura with Sean Hellfristch. He was named to Filmmaker’s Magazine 25 New Faces of Independent Film and was a Sundance Fellow in 2018.

Saxon is also a producer on the movie, but he has support from some big names in Hollywood, as the Russo brothers (Joe and Anthony Russo), famous for their role in MCU, are executive producers on The Legend of Ochi. Production company Neighborhood Watch is also involved in the movie, with Traci Carlson and Richard Pete as producers.

When the trailer was released, some online speculated that generative artificial intelligence was used to create the titular ochi creature. However, Saxon told IndieWire that no AI was used in the movie, that the ochi was created using animatronics. He also tried to stamp out any comparisons to The Mandalorian’s Baby Yoda, saying he started writing and designing the movie in 2015, four years before The Mandalorian premiered.

As described in WTW's We Live in Time review, the movie is an honest portrayal of a couple, Almut (Pugh) and Tobias (Garfield), through three distinct periods in their relationship: falling in love, building a family and dealing with a particularly difficult moment that could alter their future.

But there’s another element in the movie, directed by John Crowley and written by Nick Payne, that may have made it a bit hard for some to follow. Instead of telling a straight linear story, We Live in Time unfolds in a free-flowing kind of way. It jumps back and forth between the different storylines. If that tripped you up at all and left you wondering what exactly happened to Almut and Tobias, we’re here to help you fill in the gaps with our We Live in Time ending explainer.

Early on in the movie we learn that the difficulty Almut and Tobias are going to go through is Almut’s ovarian cancer diagnosis. As we learn, this is her second time having to combat the illness. Previously, she had two options to fight the disease: remove one of her ovaries to preserve the chance she and Tobias could have kids one day, but leave a greater chance for the cancer to come back, or a complete hysterectomy. Almut chooses to just remove one ovary, which is a big moment for the couple as she had previously said she didn’t think she wanted kids, but decided that was something she wanted to do with Tobias. The surgery and treatment are successful on this first bout with the disease, as Almut goes into remission. Eventually they have a daughter, Ella (Grace Delaney).

However, in the storyline years later, Almut and Tobias learn the cancer is back, this time it is Stage 3. They’re told the tumor is too large to operate on, so first they would have to shrink it using chemotherapy, then surgery, then another bout of chemo. Almut knows there is a second option, as she tells Tobias they could have six months to make the most of their remaining time together as opposed to 12 months of hell with a treatment that’s not guaranteed to work. Ultimately, they opt for Almut to do the chemotherapy.

Almut still hopes to make the most of her time though. As an acclaimed chef, she is invited to compete in the Bocuse d’Or, an international competition described as the Olympics of the cooking world. The training for it would be quite demanding, even if she weren’t also going through chemo. But Almut is determined, so she agrees to participate in the competition, but she doesn’t tell Tobias. To top it all off, she and Tobias decide to get married (they had skipped the ceremonial rite despite their long relationship and having Ella).

Can Almut and Tobias have it all, or are all these obstacles too much to overcome?

What happens to Almut and Tobias in We Live in Time?

Almut and her teammate, Jade (Lee Braithwaite), compete and win the UK qualifying for the Bocuse d’Or, all without Tobias knowing. The next step is a round against the other qualifiers from Europe, which she learns will take place on June 5 and 6. That’s a bit of a problem, because her and Tobias' wedding is set for June 5.

Then the other bomb drops. The chemotherapy hasn’t been successful in shrinking the tumor. They do have other treatment options, but for Almut this is a devastating blow. Nevertheless, she throws herself into the intense training for the Bocuse d’Or, so much that she forgets to pick Ella up one day from school.

This leads to a big fight between her and Tobias, where he finally learns she is involved in the competition. He’s extremely upset, believing running herself ragged like that is impacting the treatment. That’s when Almut shares why she’s doing the competition. She doesn’t want Ella to only think back to this portion of her life as when her mom was struggling with a sickness, she wants to do something that her daughter can remember fondly/proudly; and she also admits that she is afraid to be forgotten. Though still upset she didn’t tell him, he can empathize with that. He asks when the next part of the competition is? When she says June 5 he can only laugh. But ultimately, they agree for Almut to compete.

So Almut competes at the Bocuse d’Or, with Tobias and Ella cheering her on. She and Jade have to create an elaborate main course and dessert dish in a set amount of time. It comes down to the wire, but they complete the task. We don’t learn how Almut finishes though, because after she finishes something comes over her. She thanks her teammate and then leaves with Tobias and Ella.

They go to an ice skating rink. We learn previously that Almut was an accomplished figure skater in her youth. However, when her dad passed away, she lost the joy in skating. But now, with her partner and her daughter, Almut skates with a big smile on her face. After helping instruct Tobias and Ella a bit on the ice, the pair wait on one side of the ice as Almut skates on her own. She eventually turns around at the other end, stops and waves to them. As they wave, the scene fades out. This represents Almut passing away.

We close the movie with Tobias, Ella and their new dog (Almut had previously suggested they get a dog, though with the joke that they get an old one close to death to potentially help Ella deal with her mother’s illness) at home. Tobias teaches Ella how to bake, using many of the techniques that Almut had previously taught him, as Almut’s legacy with her family will live on.

Everyone needs a good cry now and then, so if you feel like you're due, then We Live in Time is just what the doctor ordered. The romance drama stars Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield as the central couple of Almut and Tobias, whose relationship is told in a free-flowing, time-jumping style. The duo's brilliant chemistry and an honest, if incredibly heightened, script give ample opportunity to get the waterworks flowing.

Full disclosure, I didn't cry (never been a big crier with movies), but that doesn't mean I didn't register the emotional gut punches sprinkled throughout the movie. And they are numerous, many coming from Pugh, who absolutely knocks it out of the park in these dramatic moments. 

There are three distinct storylines being told in the movie: the early days of Almut and Tobias' relationship, their attempts to get pregnant and the eventual birth of their daughter, and how they deal with Almut's cancer diagnosis (the last one is not a spoiler, it's introduced in the opening moments of the movie and is featured in the trailer). Some viewers may need a little bit of time to get their bearings with the jumping around (though to be fair it's not nearly as complicated as a Christopher Nolan timeline) but the structure allows for emotional moments to be quickly alleviated with ones of joy and laughter. That makes We Live in Time a movie that, despite the hardships, many will fall for and want to watch more than once.

We Live in Time is the latest script from writer Nick Payne, who has definitely found a niche in writing emotional movies (previous credits include The Sense of an Ending and The Last Letter from Your Lover). The highlight of his work here though is how honest and intimate the relationship feels. There's a Hollywood declaration of love or two, but the script also features the fights and the little intricacies of a realistic relationship.

That being said, the meet-cute that brings these two together is surprisingly contrived. Again, previewed in the trailer, Almut hits Tobias with her car. But while they try to lay the groundwork for all the little things that eventually lead up to that fateful traffic accident, it has so many holes that if you think about it for more than a minute it feels unrealistic. Still, Garfield and Pugh are able to glide over it in the moment with their charm.

There are other examples of these overly heightened moments, whether it's the situation when Almut gives birth or the fact that she takes part in the cooking Olympics as she deals with her cancer treatment. In a lesser movie, these could be eye-roll inducing or head-scratching. In We Live in Time, they're executed to the point where they are among the more memorable moments of the movie.

I haven't mentioned director John Crowley (Brooklyn) yet. That's not meant as a condemnation of his work in the movie, it's just that the performances, the writing and even the editing (by Justine Wright) shine a bit more. He still did an excellent job bringing it all together.

The MVP of the movie though is Pugh, who is spectacular as Almut, giving another brilliant performance in an already notable career. She definitely gets the bigger moments than Garfield (who is good, maybe just short of great) and she does the most with them. Is a second Oscar nomination on the way for her? Maybe, but I certainly wouldn't complain if she wins over voters with her inspired performance.

Most audiences are sure to fall in love with We Live in Time. Just be prepared with a tissue or a shoulder to cry on.

This is just the latest bit of social media buzz the movie has drummed up in its promotion. The aforementioned Daniel Craig is going to be playing the main role of William Lee, an American expat living a solitary life in 1950s Mexico City. This is the first non-James Bond/Benoit Blanc role that Craig has had in a movie since 2017. Outside those two iconic franchises, he has notably starred in Logan Lucky, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Munich and Layer Cake.

Leading the way opposite Craig is Drew Starkey as Eugene Allerton, the young man who catches William Lee’s eye. Starkey will be known to most for his role in the Netflix TV series Outer Banks, though he’s also starred in 2022's Hellraiser, The Terminal List and The Devil All the Time.

It's been six years since Steve McQueen, director of Best Picture winner 12 Years a Slave, has helmed a narrative feature (though he's been busy with the acclaimed TV series Small Axe and a couple of documentaries), but he's back with Blitz, a World War 2 story of a young boy determined to return to his mother in London during the Nazi bombing of the city known as the Blitz. This has all the makings of a big-time contender — WW2 setting, a sure-to-be enthralling story, great cast and a well known director — now it just has to deliver.

The Brutliast

When talking about massive, bold epics coming out in fall 2024, much of the talk has been around Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis, but Brady Corbet's The Brutalist is could be the breakout hit between the two. The story centers on a Holocaust survivor and his wife, who come to America and have their life forever changed by a wealthy benefactor. The movie was shot on 70mm and is said to be more than three hours. If it works, it could be then can't miss movie of the year. 

A Complete Unknown

James Mangold knows a thing or two about making successful music biopics, having directed Walk the Line about Johnny Cash. He tackles another iconic musician in A Complete Unknown, Bob Dylan, portrayed in the movie by Timothée Chalamet. Chalamet is quickly becoming one of the most revered actors of his generation, so is he going to be recognized for that with an Oscar soon or will he have to wait? A Complete Unknown will be key to answering that question. 

Conclave

• Director: Edward Berger

Edward Berger's much anticipated follow up to his Oscar-winning adaptation of All Quiet on the Western Front trades the battlefields of World War 1 for the Sistine Chapel, as Conclave is set in the world of the Catholic Church as a new pope must be selected and dark secrets threaten to be exposed. The material, based on an international best-seller, should be juicy for the four main members of the cast and have them in discussion for awards, while Berger could continue his ascent up the ranks of emerging directors with another critically acclaimed hit.

A Different Man

• Cast: Sebastian Stan, Renate Reinsve, Adam Pearson
• Director: Aaron Schimberg

Earning some of the best notices of his career, A Different Man could be the best chance yet that Sebastian Stan has at earning an Oscar nomination. He plays an aspiring actor who has a radical treatment done for his neurofibromatosis (a genetic disorder that causes benign tumors and growths), only to be beaten out for a role by another actor with a similar condition. Renate Reinsve and Adam Pearson (who has neurofibromatosis in real life) also star. 

Eden

• Cast: Sydney Sweeney, Ana de Armas, Vanessa Kirby, Jude Law, Daniel Bruehl
• Director: Ron Howard

A Beautiful Mind Oscar-winner Ron Howard's latest is a star-studded retelling of historical events that saw Europeans who tried to settle on the Galapagos islands in the early 20th century. While we're awaiting an official release date, Eden will screen at the Toronto International Film Festival where it hopes to build up some early buzz. 

Emilia Perez

• Release date: November 13 (on Netflix)
• Cast: Karla Sofía Gascón, Zoe Saldana, Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz, Edgar Ramirez
• Director: Jacques Audiard

One of Netflix’s high profile original movies this year, Emilia Perez is a story of a cartel leader (the titular Emilia Perez) that fakes her death in an attempt to live the life she wants, told through vibrant song and dance. The movie already has an 88% "Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes after screening at the Cannes Film Festival and is fully expected to get a brief run in movie theaters (though details are still TBD) to qualify for Oscars.

The End

Another unconventional musical (despite reportedly being influenced by the Golden Age Hollywood style) is The End, which follows the last human family. This movie marks the narrative feature debut of Joshua Oppenheimer, who is a two-time Oscar nominee already for directing the documentaries The Act of Killing and The Look of Silence. First word on The End will come out of Toronto where it is going to premiere. 

The Fire Inside

• Director: Rachel Morrison

Another director making their feature debut this year is Rachel Morrison (an Oscar-nominated cinematographer for Black Panther), as she helms The Fire Inside, the story of Claressa Shields, who became the first US woman to win boxing gold at the Olympics. The sure to be inspiring movie hopes to win over audiences and should be a showcase for Ryan Destiny as Shields and previous Oscar-nominee Brian Tyree Henry as her coach.

Gladiator II

• Cast: Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, Connie Nielsen
• Director: Ridley Scott

Only two sequels have ever won Best Picture (The Godfather Part II and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King), but only The Godfather Part II did so after its previous iteration had. So it's not going to be an easy feat for Gladiator II to duplicate after Gladiator won the top trophy more than 20 years ago. But movie fans were enthralled by the Gladiator II trailer (and all the new Coliseum battles) and if the movie can live up to the hype it'll have a chance to make history at the Oscars. 

Hard Truths

Mike Leigh returns for this 23rd movie in his impressive career with Hard Truths, reuniting with his Secret & Lies co-star Marianne Jean-Baptise to tell the story of an extended Black family in London, particularly its prickly matriarch played by Jean-Baptise. Leigh has crafted many brilliant ensemble pieces over the years that really get to the heart of the human experience, which has been rewarded with Oscar recognition in the past with seven total nominations. Can Hard Truths finally snag him his first Oscar win? 

Here

Another exciting reunion this fall comes in Here, where Forrest Gump stars Tom Hanks and Robin Wright once again work with Robert Zemeckis in this uniquely told story. Based on a graphic novel, Here focuses on the different people that live in a single place over generations, capturing important moments and how the times change. It looks like the movie is going to feature only one camera setup, with the scene and characters changing within it. That makes it a curious entry at least, but powerful performances from Hanks, Wright and company could make it an Oscar contender. 

His Three Daughters

His Three Daughters depicts three estranged sisters that come together in their father's small apartment to watch over him as he is dying. The movie should be a showcase for its three leading ladies — Coon, Lyonne and Olsen — which could easily have them in the conversation for end-of-year laurels. This type of movie also always seems ripe for a screenplay nom. And if all that comes to pass, don't be surprised if momentum carries it to a possible Best Picture nomination.

Joker: Folie a Deux

Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix's Joker was a bit of a surprise Oscar darling, as the unique spin on the iconic Batman villain earned 11 nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director, and two wins for Best Score and Best Actor for Phoenix. The sequel, Joker: Folie a Deux, is pushing the envelope, as it intends to add a musical element to the deranged story of Arthur Fleck (Phoenix) in addition to Lady Gaga playing the role of Harley Quinn. We won't be surprised this time if Joker: Folie a Deux is another awards favorite. 

Maria

Pablo Larraín has already told the story of two defining women of the 20th century in Jackie and Spencer, and he'll do so again with Maria, focusing on legendary opera singer Maria Callas. Angelina Jolie stars, marking her first time in a movie since 2021. Following Natalie Portman's nomination for Jackie and Kristen Stewart's for Spencer, expect there to be a lot of hype around Jolie in the Best Actress category.

Nickel Boys

Colson Whitehead's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, Nickel Boys, could add an Oscar to its resume in the near future. The best-selling book about two Black teens at a horrific juvenile detention facility in the 1960s in the south looks to parlay its success from page to screen. After Whitehead's The Underground Railroad was so critically acclaimed, it would be no surprise for more of the author's work to speak to audiences and Oscar voters.

Nightbitch

• Cast: Amy Adams, Scoot McNairy, Zoë Chao, Mary Holland, Archana Rajan, Jessica Harper, Arleigh Patrick Snowden, Emmett James Snowden

An early contender for the strangest movie to vie for Oscars this year is Marielle Heller and Amy Adams' Nightbitch. Based off of the Rachel Yoder book of the same name, the movie sees Adams play a new mom who begins to suspect that she is transforming into a dog. It might not seem like traditional Oscar bait, but Adams' involvement will definitely make it one to look out for, at the very least as she continues to pursue her first Oscar win.

Nosfertau

F.W. Murnau's original silent movie masterpiece Nosferatu wasn't eligible for Oscars because the award didn't yet exist, but a remake of the movie by the talented Robert Eggers could be, as this project is right up The Witch director's alley. This gothic vampire story inspired by Dracula (but for complicated reasons is not), Nosferatu could see the stars align for Eggers to finally get some awards recognition his previous movies have missed out on; at the very least expect things like production and costume design to be strong contenders.

The Outrun

Already a four-time Oscar nominee, it feels more like a matter of when, not if, Saoirse Ronan is going to win an Oscar. Can The Outrun be that vehicle for her? She's earned rave reviews for her performance as an alcoholic fresh out of rehab who returns to her small hometown in Scotland to come to terms with her addiction and troubled past.

The Piano Lesson

• Cast: Samuel L. Jackson, John David Washington, Ray Fisher, Danielle Deadwyler, Michael Potts, Corey Hawkins, Skyler Aleece Smith

August Wilson's work has proven to be catnip for Oscar nominations in recent years with Fences and Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. Now another one of the famed playwright's pieces is set for adaptation, as Samuel L. Jackson and John David Washington headline the ensemble of The Piano Lesson, which follows a family that keeps track of its history through a piano that has been passed down through generations. Denzel Washington is on board as a producer.

Queer

Luca Guadagnino's Challengers already came out this year to strong reviews and could be a potential Oscar contender, but the director is doubling his chances with the movie Queer. Daniel Craig stars as an expat living his life in 1950s Mexico City surviving on part-time jobs and GI Bill benefits when he embarks on a relationship with a young man named Allerton. Guadagnino is always one to watch, and this could be a strong chance for Craig to land his first-ever Oscar nomination. 

A Real Pain

Despite screening movies before the previous year's Oscars are even handed out, Sundance has had a good track record recently of having at least one of its movies perform well at the Oscars. One contender for that this year is A Real Pain, a dramedy written, directed and starring Jesse Eisenberg, who alongside Kieran Culkin play cousins that travel to Poland together for a trip to honor their grandmother, rediscovering their family history and touching on their own issues along the way.

The Room Next Door

• Director: Pedro Almodóvar

Oscar-winner and international sensation Pedro Almodóvar is doing something he's never done before with The Room Next Door — make a feature movie in English. But we should still expect the writer/director to deliver another intimate and powerful story, highlighted by performances from two of the best actresses working: Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton. The Room Next Door has the potential to be a major player with the Oscars. 

Saturday Night

As the historic Saturday Night Live season 50 debuts in 2024, so does Saturday Night, a new movie from Jason Reitman about the very first episode of the sketch comedy show. Told in real-time, it depicts the chaos involved with getting that initial episode ready to air live on TV from a little known producer named Lorne Michaels (Gabriel LaBelle) and featuring mostly unheard of comedians. The ensemble for Saturday Night is stacked with young talent, though LaBelle could break through as Michaels. 

The Seed of the Sacred Fig

Another international entry that could play beyond the Best International Feature category is Mohammad Rasoulof's The Seed of the Sacred Fig. While the story of of judge who suspects one of his family members has stolen his service weapon amidst protests in Iran is intriguing in its own right, the backstory of the movie could also be a big story this year. Germany is actually submitting the movie for the Oscars, as that is where Rasoulof has lived since he fled Iran and its government in May. 

The Substance

• Cast: Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley, Dennis Quaid, Hugo Diego Garcia, Joseph Balderrama, Oscar Lesage, Gore Abrams, Matthew Géczy

Movies described as "body horror" aren't often considered Oscar bait, but The Substance's raves (and the Academy's shift in tastes in recent years) may change that. Demi Moore is getting some of the best notices of her career for this performance, while the screenplay by Coarlie Fargeat received the Best Screenplay prize at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. It probably won't be a movie for everyone, but it could still draw Oscar's attention. 

We Live in Time

• Cast: Andrew Garfield, Florence Pugh
• Director: John Crowley

We Live in Time could be the next great cinematic love story, as Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh go through the ups and downs of a relationship in the latest movie from Brooklyn director John Crowley. But will the Oscars fall in love with the movie? Garfield and Pugh are both popular with the Academy but are still searching for their first Oscar wins.

Wicked

• Cast: Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Yeoh, Jonathan Bailey, Bowen Yang, Peter Dinklage

The Broadway smash hit Wicked is coming to movie theaters, set to bring audiences back to the world of Oz, this time to learn about the backstories of witches Glinda and Elphaba (aka the Wicked Witch of the West). This is one of the most popular musicals of all time, so if the movie succeeds in its adaptation, then it could be primed for Oscar glory. The story is being split into two parts (with Wicked Part 2 coming in 2025), but that didn't stop Dune from raking up awards. 

The Wild Robot

• Cast: Lupita Nyong’o, Pedro Pascal, Catherine O'Hara, Bill Nighy, Kit Conner, Stephanie Hsu, Mark Hamill, Matt Berry, Ving Rhames

Only three animated movies have ever been nominated for Best Picture (Beauty and the Beast, Up and Toy Story 3), but The Wild Robot has the potential to change that. An adaptation of the acclaimed children's book from Peter Brown, Lupita Nyong'o leads an all-star voice cast in what looks to be a gorgeously animated movie. Can it make history as the next animated movie to become a major player at the Oscars? 

Without Blood

• Cast: Salma Hayek, Demián Bichir, Juan Minujín
• Director: Angelia Jolie

In addition to starring in a potential Oscar contender this year, Angelina Jolie is directing one with her latest movie Without Blood. Based on Alessandro Baricco's novel of the same name, the story is described as a fable about the brutality of war and healing in its aftermath. It could be a big year for Jolie, and we'll know soon if either of her movies have a chance to make some noise on the awards circuit as they screen at some of then major fall film festivals. 

Full Circle creator Ed Solomon and production company A24 have teamed up with Hulu for the new drama series The Spot.

In addition to Full Circle, Solomon wrote the script for other recent Steven Soderbergh projects, No Sudden Move and Mosaic, as well as the classic sci-fi comedy Men in Black. A24, meanwhile, may be best known for their movies (examples this year include Sing Sing, Civil War and Love Lies Bleeding), but they've also been behind some acclaimed TV series, like Beef, The Sympathizer and Sunny. Is The Spot their next big TV hit?

Here's what you need to know about it.

The Spot release date

There is no release date for The Spot at this time, but the expectation is that the series will premiere in 2026. We do know that whenever The Spot premieres it is going to stream on Hulu for US audiences.

In all likelihood, that means The Spot is going to stream on Disney Plus in the UK, but that's not confirmed at this time.

If you want to make sure you'll be able to watch The Spot whenever it premieres, you can sign up for Hulu now and in the meantime enjoy its other original programming, including Only Murders in the Building, The Bear and The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives.

The Spot cast

Kate Winslet was previously attached to star in The Spot, but according to Deadline she has left the project. Indications are that the series hopes to get another A-list actress to take over the role vacated by Winslet.

The Y2K bug, where people fretted that computers would go haywire when the turn of the century happened, turned out to be a whole lot of nothing. But the 2024 new movie Y2K, hailing from Saturday Night Live alum Kyle Mooney, is a comedy that revisits the old conspiracy theory and wonders what may have happened if the tech crash really did take place.

Y2K joins a busy A24 slate to end the year, as the popular mini studio also has The Front Room, A Different Man, We Live in Time, Heretic and Babygirl set to release before the end of the year. All of those movies join a slate that has already come out that includes Problemista, Love Lies Bleeding, Civil War, Tuesday, MaXXXine and Sing Sing.

Y2K is now playing exclusively in movie theaters in the US. At this time we don't have any details on a release date for the movie outside of the US.

Y2K cast

The cast of Y2K features a lot of young stars that many will be familiar with. Leading the way is Jaeden Martell, who has starred in IT, Knives Out and Defending Jacob. The other headliner is Rachel Zegler, the breakout star of West Side Story and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Julian Dennison (The Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Deadpool 2) rounds out the main trio.

Other confirmed members of the cast are musicians The Kid Laroi (making his acting debut) and Fred Durst, who starred in another A24 movie earlier this year, I Saw the TV Glow. Kyle Mooney is also set to appear in the movie.

Y2K plot
