Amandaland season 2: cast, plot and everything we know

Amandaland season 2 is officially on the way following the huge success of Amandaland season 1 last year which saw over 6.4 million viewers tuning in, making it one of the BBC’s biggest comedy launches in recent years.

The Motherland spin-off was such a huge hit with viewers that it has been commissioned for another installment, and we will once again see Lucy Punch back as chaotic Amanda, along with her passive-aggressive mother Felicity - played by the legendary Joanna Lumley - and the brilliant Philippa Dunne will also return as Amanda's long-suffering friend Anne.

Speaking of the show's return, co-writer and creator Holly Walsh says: “We've been bowled over by the response to Amandaland and can't wait to get co-labbing on the next series.”

While creator Sharon Horgan adds: “With any new show you put out there, your main hope is to make something you love and are proud of. The extra bonus is that it's a critical hit. But to have a loyal audience of this size is just beyond your hopes and expectations. Special thanks to Lucy for being the most extraordinary front woman and to the BBC for having such faith in the idea of Amandaland from the off.”

Amandaland season 2 release date

It is a little too early for a release date, but we are guessing Amandaland season 2 will land on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in 2026.

Amandaland season 2 plot

Season 1 saw Amanda forced to downsize and move to South Harlesden, which is a little too close to Wormwood Scrubs prison for her liking. Her children, Manus and Georgie, are now at secondary school, meaning single-parent Amanda is faced with horrors such as teenage drinking, fake Instagram accounts and eco anxiety.

Can the ever-confident Amanda cope with these issues alone? Unfortunately for her, her mother Felicity (Joanna Lumley) is always around, complete with her backhanded compliments and constant sniping. And after a brief spell of freedom, Anne (Philippa Dunne) is pulled back into Amanda’s life to help her navigate the social scene and the parents at the kids’ new school.

The end of season 1 saw Amanda break up with love interest Johannes after he tries to woo her with her fancy life and hefty bank account... but will Amanda regret her decision in season 2? Or could there be a new romance on the cards?

It is more than likely that Lucy will be returning as Amanda, becasue Amandaland wouldn't quite be the same without, well... Amanda! As well as starring in Motherland, Lucy also played Jo in the series Bloods and Esme Squalor in A Series of Unfortunate Events. She’s also been in Doc Martin, St. Trinian’s, Vexed, Bad Teacher, Avenue 5 and How to Date Billy Walsh.

Sharp-tongued Felicity might be scratchy on the surface, but underneath, she loves her family dearly and it is thought Joanna will be back for the second season. Joanna Lumley is best known for playing Patsy in Absolutely Fabulous and Purdey in The New Avengers. She’s also been in Coronation Street, Sapphire and Steel, Fool Me Once, Finding Alice, The Sandman, Paddington, Me Before You and Gangsta Granny, among countless other shows and movies.

Philippa Dunne as Anne
One of the absolute highlights of Amandaland season 1 is the amazing Philippa Dune as Amanda's friend, Anne - and fans will be thrilled to know she is likely to be back for a second season. Philippa has also played Geraldine Devlin in Derry Girls and has also starred in Inside No.9, The Woman in the Wall, Bodies, This Is Going to Hurt and The Nevers.

Also in the cast...

The first series introduced a host of new characters, including Amanda’s long-suffering downstairs neighbour Mal (Samuel Anderson) and JJ (Ekow Quartey), the stepfather to Mal’s son Ned.

We also met power couple Della and Fi (Siobhán McSweeney and Rochenda Sandall) and smooth-talking South African property developer Johannes (Peter Serafinowicz).

Amandaland, the much-anticipated Motherland spin-off is finally here - and boy was it worth the wait.

Motherland went down in comedy history with its pitch-perfect depiction of the trials and tribulations of middle-class parenting, with characters everyone at the school gate can relate to. But comedy genius Sharon Horgan (Bad Sisters and Catastrophe) has done it again with Amandaland, which follows Motherland's 'alpha mum' Amanda (Lucy Punch) as she moves to a new area and juggles divorce with raising teenagers.

Just like Motherland, Amandaland once again offers those laugh-out-loud moments along with a good dose of cringe, with Lucy Punch playing Amanda to perfection. I am a huge Motherland fan and have watched every episode countless times, but I have to admit, I think Amandaland has done what many spin-offs fail to do, and that's making it as good, if not better, than the original.

Alongside Lucy Punch is Joanna Lumley who is back as Amanda's narcissistic mum, Felicity, while the amazing Philippa Dunne returns as Amanda's long-suffering minion - sorry, I mean friend - Anne Flynn. Each returning as their iconic Motherland characters, but this time stepped up a gear and polished to comedy perfection.

If you are yet to watch, Amandaland picks up a few years after Motherland ended, with Anne and Amanda's kids now teenagers.

Amanda has had to downsize and up sticks to South Harlesden, or as the estate agent calls it, SoHa (definitely not the area around Wormwood Scrubs prison!), and as she navigates teenage drinking and fake Instagram accounts, Amanda is also trying to make her new job as an interior influencer take off.

Of course, good old Anne is on hand to introduce her to the other parents at the school - and after a few years off from being Amanad's downtrodden sidekick, Anne is well and truly back under Amanda's well-manicured thumb.

Also among the Amandaland cast are Samuel Anderson (Gavin & Stacey) as Amanda's neighbour, Mal, plus Siobhan McSweeney (Derry Girls) as Della, Rochenda Sandall (Line of Duty) as Fi, Ekow Quartey (Trying) as JJ and Peter Serafinowicz (The Gentlemen) as Johannes.

With all six episodes now on BBC iPlayer and each one only half an hour long, this is binge-worthy TV at its very best. Enjoy!

The Motherland spin-off hasn’t got a release date in the States yet. Amandaland, the spin-off from the hit sitcom Motherland, sees alpha mum Amanda battling to secure her status at the school gates as she moves to a new area.

But as the comedy begins on BBC One on Wednesday, February 5, Amanda (Lucy Punch) is joined by her haughty, hard-to-please mother Felicity, played once more by Absolutely Fabulous and Fool Me Once star Dame Joanna Lumley, who complicates her daughter’s life even more with her constant demands and complaints.

Here, Joanna Lumley reveals what to expect from Amandaland…

Amandaland shines a spotlight on the relationship between Amanda and Felicity. What is their dynamic like now, especially since Amanda has downsized and moved to a new area after her divorce?

“Things were alright because Amanda was married to someone who had a bit of money and lived in the right sort of place. But now [Felicity feels] everything is sad and small and shrunken and Amanda is not really making any progress! Amanda’s children, however, are slightly better, because they're growing up, so Felicity can teach them useful things like mixing cocktails! But I just think Felicity is so selfish and so self-regarding. I adore her!”

You seem to be playing quite a few mean characters lately in this and the likes of Fool Me Once. Is that fun?!

“It is written into my contract now, I must be mean. I'm always cast as horrid, savage, old grannies and mothers and wizened cruel aunts. I don’t know what it is, because I'm a sunny character! But it might be to do with the accent. A lot of people find how I speak pretty off-putting!”

What has it been like to reunite with Lucy again?

“Well, years and years ago, when Anne Hathaway was doing Ella Enchanted, I was the wicked stepmother, and Lucy was one of the ugly sisters, or whatever they would be called. And it was lovely to play Lucy's mother then. And then we did Motherland and I was in for a couple of afternoons, that's all it was. So Amandaland was magic to be part of and to be in every episode.”

What do you love about Amandaland?

“I think it's nice that it's not sentimental. Although I have to say, I find Anne [Amanda’s devoted friend played by Philippa Dunne] fabulously touching. You kind of go, ‘I wish I knew somebody as sweet as that, prepared to make the best out of everything.’”

Have you enjoyed working with Alexander Shaw and Miley Locke, who play Felicity’s grandchildren Manus and Georgie too?

“The whole cast is out of this world. But it was a particular thrill to work with these two young ones, who are really remarkable. As actors, we all think we can get away with it if we say roughly the right lines, but not them, they just look at you with beady eyes, and correct you! They are word perfect and on the dot all the time. And they're so cool and so smooth, and they took direction so easily, and they were so smart and funny. It was wonderful.”

You’ve obviously been in a fair few iconic sitcoms. What makes a successful comedy?

“You can't tell anything until it hits the audience. It's the same with plays when you rehearse them. That's why there’s the dread of the first night. You don't know how it's going to go. You've rehearsed it, you've got it right, and you've done it to the best of your abilities. But you don't know how it's going to work until it works.

"On the pilot episode of Ab Fab, we didn't know if it would even be commissioned. How could you tell? You couldn't tell until the audience laughed. That's what we've got to wait for with this. No pressure!”

Amandaland, a spin-off from acclaimed sitcom Motherland, sees snooty alpha mum Amanda take centre stage.

The six-part show follows the pretentious mother-of-two, played by Lucy Punch, as she faces a huge change in status when she moves to a new area because she has been forced to downsize after her divorce.

But she also has to deal with teenage crises, because her children Manus (Alexander Shaw) and Georgie (Miley Locke) are now at secondary school, while her catty mum Felicity (Joanna Lumley) is making increasing demands on her time. Luckily, she soon reconnects with her loyal sidekick Anne (Philippa Dunne), who tries to assist Amanda as she battles to reign supreme at the school gates once again.

Here, Lucy Punch and Philippa Dunne reveal more about Amandaland…

Amandaland gives a fresh take on some of the Motherland characters. How did you feel when you heard there was going to be a spin-off?

Lucy Punch: “I was excited, surprised and intrigued about where it could go and how it could maintain the tone of Motherland, while doing something new. It feels like the same world. But it’s about figuring out who Amanda is now.”

Philippa Dunne: “It’s great! I’ve always enjoyed working with Lucy, so I jumped at the chance to do so again and I love Amanda and Anne's relationship. There are different twists and we’ve built a new dynamic but it’s the same humour and it's written by the same people.”

Where do we find Amanda?

Lucy Punch: “She’s starting over and has probably had a meltdown but has now galvanised herself and is bringing her full Amanda energy to whip up a storm! She’s trying to recreate what she had, which is impossible without the house, clothes or husband. But she’s doing her best!”

Are we seeing more of her vulnerability though?

Lucy Punch: “Absolutely. Even in Motherland, we saw that behind the perfect façade was a damaged woman. Now, we see her scrambling, because she’s a good mother, but it’s hard raising teenagers alone, working, and navigating a new place, and she’s lonely. But Amanda’s enormous ego makes her life harder!”

Philippa Dunne: "There's lot of smoke and mirrors. I think Amanda is a master of her own PR agency, and she will try and convince everyone that everything's fantastic as per usual, but she's been knocked down a peg or two from where she thinks she should be, and she struggles. This is a new challenge and things are mounting on top of her, so she needs Anne now more than ever."

And what’s Anne up to?

Philippa Dunne: “Anne’s been living her best life instead of running around after Amanda. But when they meet up again, they're back to square one with Anne fawning over her! It's so difficult for her not to hero worship Amanda. If Amanda wants something, Anne’ll help her get it and pick up the pieces when things don't go right. Sometimes it goes really well. Sometimes it doesn’t! But Anne's an enthusiastic soul, she likes rolling up the old sleeves and getting stuck in."

Lucy Punch: “Yes, Amanda flourishes with Anne around. Now Anne’s her lifeline, helping her navigate this new world. Anne’s probably the only person who’s ever loved Amanda unconditionally.”

Philippa Dunne: “The new cast are really great. They bring some really lovely touches. I've worked with Siobhán before [on Derry Girls], and she’s fantastic, there’s always something wacky going on with Della and Fi and I like the dynamic that Anne and Della have, because they don't always see eye to eye. And Mal is a nice, decent guy but he has no fear of standing up to Amanda, she meets her match!”

Lucy Punch: “Mal lives beneath Amanda and even if you can’t stand someone, that proximity creates a bond. Siobhán and Rochenda are a brilliant double act. And later, we’ve got Johannes [Amanda’s South African boyfriend played by The Tick’s Peter Serafinowicz], who’s hilarious.”

And what’s it like having Joanna Lumley back as Felicity?

Lucy Punch: “Amanda’s in Anne’s position when it comes to her relationship with her mother. She admires her, but it’s a complicated, deeply buried love.

Philippa Dunne: “But Joanna’s brilliant, she knows everyone's lines and is a lovely person. I spend a lot of time just looking at her, trying not to stare. She’s absolutely fabulous – sorry!”
