You can now connect your Roku device — be it a Roku TV, or a Roku Player such as a stick or dongle or box — to Amazon Alexa. That'll let you control your Roku via an Amazon Echo, or any other Alexa-enabled device.

How to connect Roku to Amazon Alexa via the app

Open the Amazon Alexa app on your phone or tablet.
Open the sidebar menu. (Look for the three lines in the top left, or just slide in from the left-hand side.)
Tap on the "Settings" option at the bottom.
Now choose "TV & Video."
Tap on "Roku."
Tap on "Enable Skill"
Enter your Roku account email and password.
Tap "Sign in."
Tap "Accept and Continue."
Choose the Roku device you want to control via Amazon Alexa. (You currently can only pick one.)
Alexa will now detect and connect to your Roku device.
Choose the device again (yes, again), then tap "Continue."
Now choose the Alexa devices (you can choose more than one) you want to use to control your Roku device.
You can now choose to connect another Roku device, if you wish.

What you need to know

• Amazon has released an Alexa app for Sony Android TVs.

• The new app allows you to control your TV, play music, and show your cameras on Sony Android TVs.

• Amazon and Google came to an agreement earlier this year to bring YouTube to Fire TV and Chromecast support to Prime Video.

Amazon has released a new app making Alexa available on select Android TVs. According to the release notes, it appears to only be available on Sony Android TVs, at the moment.

Once you install the app and set it up for your TV, it will allow you to use an Alexa enabled speaker to view your cameras or play music through your TV. For example, you'll be able to say "Alexa, play music on the (TV name) or "Alexa, show my security camera on (TV name)." Alexa will also be able to change the channel, adjust the volume, switch inputs, and control media playback for your TV.

In the past, if you wanted similar integration with your TV and Echo speakers, you'd be forced to buy a Fire TV product. However, now you'll be able to enjoy voice commands on your Sony Android TV without the need for extra hardware. Hopefully, Amazon will decide to add this capability to more Android-powered TVs and devices in the future.

It's fantastic to see greater integration between Amazon and Google products and services. This could be a result of the agreement the two companies came to last April. In the past, Google and Amazon haven't always gotten along — much to the detriment of the consumer. Over the years, we've had to deal with a long absence of Prime Video on Android or Android TV devices. Then there was the incident where Amazon removed the Chromecast from its store, and of course, Google pulling YouTube support on Amazon devices.

Thankfully, the two companies finally came together and decided to make peace. This lead to more devices gaining access to the Prime Video app and Youtube is slated to come back to Amazon Fire TV later this year.

Roku now works with Amazon Alexa

Roku today announced that at long last — finally, even! — that its TVs and Roku Players now are officially Alexa-enabled. That's been a major miss for Roku in recent years as it's grown in popularity. Now? All you need is to hook up the Alexa Skill .

So what can you do with your Roku via Alexa? You can launch a channel, play and pause shows, or search for various content across the Roku ecosystem. You also can mute your TV, change inputs and even change channels if you've got an over-the-air antenna hooked up to a Roku TV.

To do any of this you'll need an Amazon Echo device, of course — the diminutive Echo Dot runs $50 when it's not on sale — and you'll need a Roku device running OS 8.1 or later. Then you'll just hook your Roku account to your Amazon account via the Alexa Skill, and you're on your way.

Additionally, Roku TV users can turn on the TV, change the volume, mute the TV, switch inputs and change channels if there is an OTA antenna connected by saying, "Alexa, turn on Roku" or "Alexa, turn up the volume on Roku."

Customers can control Roku devices running Roku OS 8.1 or greater using their Alexa-enabled devices. To get started open the Alexa app, go to settings and select TV & Video. Next, enable the Roku skill and link your account.

Can you use Drop In on an Amazon Fire TV Cube?

Best answer: No. The Amazon Fire TV Cube has other Alexa commands and skills, but it lacks a few features including Drop In, calling, and messaging. You can get a very similar setup with support for Drop In and calling from the Fire TV Stick 4K with Echo Dot Bundle.

The Fire TV Cube has lots of Echo features

The Amazon Fire TV Cube aims to combine into one box the streaming capabilities of the Fire TV lineup with the skills of Alexa from the Echo line of devices, so the Alexa features on the Fire TV Cube are very similar to those on an Echo.

However, they aren't identical. You still have the ability to play music or flash briefings, check the weather, ask questions, or, of course, shop on Amazon. Some of the differences between the Fire TV Cube and the Echo devices are TV-specific additions. On the Fire TV Cube, you can ask Alexa to change channels, launch apps, and fast forward or rewind as you watch streaming content.

It lacks some features, including Drop In

Some Alexa features from the Echo line did not make it onto the Fire TV Cube. Drop In (the feature that lets you instantly connect with your other Echo devices) is not available to use on the Amazon Fire TV Cube. This is because the calling and messaging features of Alexa aren't available at this time on the device . The Fire TV Cube also doesn't support multi-room music or voice control for Bluetooth connections.

Xbox Insiders get Alexa and Cortana speaker support

In 2013, the original Xbox One was bundled with the futuristic voice-assisted Kinect camera, which allowed you to control your TV via the console's IR blaster while incorporating voice navigation across the entire OS. The bungled bundling inflated the console's retail price, however, leading Microsoft to eventually drop Kinect from the package, and later, from development altogether.

One of the most frustrating things about the death of Kinect was the loss of voice commands for those who upgraded to an unsupported Xbox One S or Xbox One X and weren't fast enough to snap up the now-discontinued Kinect USB adapter . Thankfully, we're getting some of that functionality back, starting today.

Xbox, Alexa, Cortana and you

As we exclusively revealed , Amazon Alexa and Cortana devices, such as the Amazon Echo and the Harman/Kardon Invoke , will now be able to receive and send voice commands to your Xbox One console. Although it'll only be available for a subset of Xbox Insiders in the U.S. for the time being, it should roll out more broadly as we head towards the next major OS release, or "Redstone 5," this fall.

Xbox integration with Alexa and Cortana is simply a skill you can activate on either of those platforms. Once you have signed in and set it up via your Amazon account, it automagically connects to your Xbox console over the internet. While it probably won't be as speedy as the 2013's native Kinect voice commands, it will at least be supported and give users a wider range of options for interacting with their consoles. And you won't need a pricey Alexa or Cortana speaker to get this working; you'll be able to use it via the associated mobile phone apps on Android and iOS, or a Windows 10 PC. It should even work on Windows 10 Mobile.

The new skills actually have a few tricks that even Kinect didn't have, since they don't require the Xbox to actually be turned on to work. Standard things like adjusting volume, launching apps, taking screenshots and clips, and starting Mixer broadcasts, will all function as you would expect. However, moving beyond even Kinect's capabilities, you'll be able to say "Cortana, start Rocket League," and your speaker will boot up your console, sign in, and launch the game from a powered-off state. For some commands, it seems that you'll have to say "Alexa, tell Xbox to" as the initial command, to avoid overlapping commands like "turn up the volume."

How can you get it?

The features will remain in beta so Microsoft can work out the kinks and bugs, but if you're an Xbox Insider and you want to get started, here's how. Microsoft says it will roll out gradually for Insiders over time, likely starting with the Alpha ring.

A long time coming

Why it has taken this long to bring this functionality back to Xbox is bewildering, but at least it's here. Cortana support for Xbox was announced a couple of years back, but it finally looks like Microsoft is actually capitalizing on making the feature useful, while enlisting the help of Amazon to bring voice commands to devices you may already own. Our previous information seemed to indicate Google Assistant support was on the way too, but for whatever reason, it hasn't made it into this release.

You can grab an Alexa-powered Echo Dot for as little as $49 on Amazon, and the pricier, but more powerful Harman Kardon Invoke clocks in at around $100 via the Microsoft Store. If you're a Sonos fan, the Alexa-powered $200 Sonos One will also work and is a great option.
