They say 'a mother’s love knows no bounds' and that theory is put to the test, this week, when one devoted matriarch wages war on her son’s suspicious new flame in Prime Video’s The Girlfriend.

Based on Michelle Frances' novel of the same name, the six-part psychological thriller stars Golden Globe winner Robin Wright - best known for playing Jenny in classic movie Forrest Gump and, more recently, Claire in Netflix’s political thriller House of Cards - as Laura, a gallery owner who seems to have it all: a glittering career, loving husband Howard (Gangs of London’s Waleed Zuaiter), and precious son, Daniel (The Road Trip’s Laurie Davidson), who’s a doctor. Laura’s seemingly perfect world is turned upside down, however, when Daniel brings home Cherry (House of the Dragon’s Olivia Cooke).

After an awkward first meeting, Laura’s convinced Cherry isn’t who she says she is and is determined to prove it. Although no one else can see what she sees, Laura refuses to watch Daniel be deceived and will stop at nothing to protect him.

Here, Robin - who also directs - and Olivia, tell us more…

Can you talk us through your characters and why they're immediately wary of each other?

Olivia: "Cherry’s a working class woman from London who has a lot of ambition, which is reflected in who she dates. When Cherry goes on the defensive, she tells little white lies - or even big ones - about who she is and where she's from, which soon arouses suspicion in Laura."

Robin: "There's always that ongoing battle as a mother that nobody's ever going to be good enough for your son and, as Laura’s suspicions about Cherry start to increase, she just wants to get to the bottom of things. But is Cherry a manipulative social climber? Or is Laura just a paranoid, possessive mum?"

Each episode explores events from both Cherry and Laura’s point of view of how things happened. What does this dynamic add to the show?

Robin: "It’s all a matter of perspective, with the whole show questioning whose perspective is the most reliable. For instance, was Laura rolling her eyes at Cherry? Or was she just looking at a cobweb on the ceiling? Often there are subtle nuances and, as both sides play out, it’s the audience who gets to decide who’s in the wrong. Viewers will switch from Cherry's team, to Laura's team, then back again. It’s more of a cat-and-cat thriller, than a cat-and-mouse thriller!"

Olivia: "That’s right. Getting to play all of those juicy nuances in someone else's point of view was really enticing to me - but I found it SO confusing doing the dual perspective, so I don't know how Robin managed to act and direct it! Once, we were filming these really intense scenes; Robin’s crying was so raw and emotional but then she’d just snap out of it and say: ‘…And cut! Right, we're gonna go into a mid-shot now, what lens are you using? Okay, let's go.’ We were astounded by her dexterity. It was incredible to witness."

Caught in the middle of this two-way tension is Daniel, played by The Road Trip’s Laurie Davidson. How does Daniel navigate having these two women in his life? And did Laurie enjoy having the two of you fighting over him?

Olivia: "Ha, ha! Laurie’s a deep thinker, especially when he's preparing for a scene, he needs quiet. So I don’t think having two dynamic, powerful women at his side, hissing, would bode well for him at all! For Daniel, all you want is for your family to love your partner as much as you do so the fact Laura and Cherry don’t get along is a huge point of contention for him. In the beginning, Laura and Cherry really do try, in their own way, to bond but it’s short-lived."

Robin: "In the perfect world, Cherry and Laura would have been BFFs, because they're very much alike in many ways - but it’s almost like you hate the thing that you are in other people. Daniel loves both women but he’s locked into this clutch his mum has over him… and Cherry is, slowly but surely, trying to pull him out of it!"

Robin, as a mother of two, can you relate to Laura [Robin has a daughter, Dylan Frances Penn, 34, and son, Hopper Jack Penn, 32]?

Robin: "With my son, I’m often like: ‘What are you doing? Where are you going? What's her name? What size dress is she? So I’ve asked him to let me know once he’s seen the show, am I too much like Laura? Am I THAT annoying? Because maybe I need to back off!’"

What was your most memorable or challenging scene of The Girlfriend to film?

Olivia: "On film sets, we try to control every single element, but you can’t control nature, which was interesting when we had to film some scenes on a yacht in the middle of the ocean."

Robin: "We had several boats around us - the safety boat, the camera boat, the crane boat - and our yacht was anchored, but it was spinning, so there were many times we got the safety boat in the shot and had to reshoot it. It was hell for the crew but we eventually got the scenes in the can."

Olivia: "When everything's going wrong, but you're still getting the shots, it’s adrenalising. However, like Cherry, I do get very seasick. So I'd taken lots of meds that morning because I thought: ‘I can't be the only one to be flat on my back for the whole day’. I've experienced seasickness plenty of times in my life, so I didn't need to act too much!"

Prime Video has added The Girlfriend, a new psychological thriller series starring Robin Wright and based on the bestselling debut novel by Michelle Frances.

The House of Cards star legend plays Laura, a woman with a glittering career, a loving husband, a beautiful home, and her precious son, Daniel (Laurie Davidson). She has it all. But then Daniel brings home his beautiful new girlfriend, Cherry (Olivia Cooke), and Laura grows convinced that she’s not all she seems.

The glossy trailer (below) hints that Laura and Cherry go to war, with Laura telling Daniel that he has to choose one of them!

A chance encounter between two women from very different backgrounds has deadly repercussions in this four-part psychological thriller set in Wales. Fran (Eve Myles) is a businesswoman who employs down-on-her-luck cleaner Ria (Gabrielle Creevy) after seeing her advert in her local supermarket. However, when Ria is asked to house-sit while Fran’s away, a terrible tragedy unites them in ways they could never have predicted and events take a dark turn. Great performances from the leads and nice scenery propel this drama along, and the shocking cliffhanger of this opener is certain to leave you wanting to know what happens next. Also available on iPlayer as a box set.

The Runarounds, Prime Video

Starring real-life musicians Axel Ellis, Jesse Golliher, William Lipton, Zendé Murdock and Jeremy Yun, this drama series follows teenage high-school graduates from North Carolina who must decide whether to get jobs, go to college or risk everything to play music in their rock band called The Runarounds. This eight-parter has original music performed by the band, and the stars have never acted before. This is a bit like an older version of School of Rock.

Jamie: Eat Yourself Healthy, Channel 4, 8 pm

Ironically, you will need to be a couch potato for an hour to take in all the useful info in Jamie Oliver’s latest series about being healthy, which shares not only easy-to-follow recipes but wellbeing tips. This episode focuses on brain function, starting with a salmon tray bake with harissa-spiced chickpeas and couscous. Then he shares two meals for energy: chicken balls in a vegetable broth for the B vitamins and iron-filled spinach and lentil fritters. And, upending expectations in true Jamie-style, he wraps the benefits of beans in pastry and makes a chocolate dessert – both of which, the science shows, are good for us.

Alison & Larry: Billericay to Barry, U&Dave, 9 pm

As friends and Gavin & Stacey co-stars Alison Steadman and Larry Lamb continue their road trip, this week’s stops include Blenheim Palace and Bath. It’s a pleasantly meandering journey – a bit like their experience in Blenheim’s maze – and the pair are happy to take a detour, especially if it involves a cream tea. Larry’s also keen to keep up his daily habit of cold-water swimming, even in the snow. A puppet-making class is more Alison’s style and it prompts her to share some childhood memories as this gentle series winds its way to next week’s conclusion.

It may have one of cinema's most impressive female ensembles, but The 355, which has landed on Netflix today in the US, is no girlie flick.

Espionage action thrillers like this used to be dominated by men, and any in the cast played secondary — and often purely decorative — roles. Which, for the film's producer and star, Jessica Chastain, was the point of making her movie.

Released in 2022, this was just the second movie made under the Freckle Films banner, the production company launched by Chastain back in 2016. That same year, it also released The Eyes Of Tammy Faye, which saw her producing again, as well as playing the title role of TV evangelist Tammy Faye Bakker and winning a well-overdue Best Actress Oscar.

In The 355, she's abrasive CIA agent Mason Brown, forced to work under the radar when a new weapon of mass destruction is stolen, threatening to bring about World War III.

Despite signing up former associate and computer whizz Khadijah (Lupita Nyong’o), they can’t track it down, and decide to pull in some international agents to help. German Marie (Diane Kruger), psychologist Graciela (Penelope Cruz) and Chinese MSS agent Lin (Fan Bingbing) all bring their individual talents to the hunt, which takes them all over the world at breakneck speed. But, as well as finding themselves getting closer to the asset itself, they unexpectedly discover corruption in some high and powerful places.

See what we mean about an impressive line-up? And they’re all formidable yet fun in their different ways. Mason is fearsome and very savvy, but full of insecurities underneath her prickly surface. Marie describes herself simply as “a mess”, while Khadijah has been out of action for a while and is – sensibly – more than a little wary about returning to the field. Graciela takes it one step further: she’s scared to death of the mission and just wants to be at home to her children. Lin is late to the party, but makes a big physical impact in a very short space of time.

Male agents do get a look-in. Check further down the cast list and you’ll find Edgar Ramirez as a Colombian agent who briefly gets his hands on the device and a then- emergent Sebastian Stan as CIA agent Nick, Mason’s former partner, both professionally and privately. But, given the thinking behind the film, the tables have turned.

Their characters are the ones short on both subtlety and both actors are very much in supporting roles.

The film had a turbulent time reaching its audience. Chastain had the initial idea back in 2017 when she was a member of the jury at Cannes. For all its action, twisty plot and eventual starry cast, raising the money was tricky and, by the time it was ready to hit the screen, the pandemic had brought everything to a standstill and the release was delayed. It was a blow to its box office performance, yet audiences who turned out to see it gave it 86% on Rotten Tomatoes, regarding it as a fun action thriller. Even the critics, who were less than kind, had to admit that the knock-out ensemble at the centre of the story was a real coup.

A subsequent release online proved even more popular but, despite a denouement that pointed very much towards a sequel, it didn’t happen. This wasn’t going to be Charlie’s Angels for the 2020s.

But audiences at the time weren’t wrong. This is an enjoyable espionage thriller with a cast that gives it real star quality. Packed with all the ingredients we expect from a glossy actioner – exotic locations, hair-raising car chases and twists in the tail – it perhaps lets itself down by never taking the genre into new territory. But this is one of those instances where familiarity breeds entertainment, not contempt.

Chastain is just one of a number of top name actresses who have become producers with the specific aim of opening up storytelling to the female experience and viewpoint. Since The 355, she’s also produced and starred in Mothers’ Instinct (2024) and TV miniseries George & Tammy (2023), winning a SAG Award for her performance. At much the same time as she launched her production company, Reese Witherspoon was opening the doors at Hello Sunshine to tell women-driven stories. The Golden Globe-winning Big Little Lies (2017 – 2019) followed on TV, together with a number of other shows, while she produced as well as starred alongside Will Ferrell earlier this year in the comedy You’re Cordially Invited.

Perhaps the most successful producer/actress at the moment is Margot Robbie, whose LuckyChap was founded in 2014. Its first feature, I, Tonya (2017), found immediate critical success with Robbie receiving an Oscar nomination and co-star

The Great British Bake Off 2025 (or The Great British Baking Show if you're in the US) is on the way, and once again, the series has just released a gem of a trailer.

Over the years, the show's trailers have become a highlight for fans with their cheeky humour and quirkiness, and this year's offering is no different.

The new clip, which is just over a minute long, opens at the beginning of time, and soon, what looks like a meteor starts flying through a starry sky. However, in a hilarious twist, the rock turns out to be an egg, falling into a bowl of cake mixture.

The animated trailer then sees the evolution of humans, which turn into Noel and Alison before opening with a sunny, fully formed world, complete with animals, plants, and even a Prue Leith-shaped sunshine.

Fans will be thrilled that the trailer confirms Prue will be returning to the series after she was replaced in The Great Celebrity Bake Off 2025 earlier this year by Caroline Waldegrave OBE.

While we still have a little wait to find out who will be taking part in the series this year, the show will follow the same format and once again see more cake-related catastrophes and mouthwatering recipes.

We will also have a new batch of bakers enter the tent, all with one mission in mind — impress Paul and Prue enough to win the coveted title of Star Baker, and perhaps with the odd Hollywood handshake added in for good measure.

Each week, the bakers will once again face the regular challenge trinity: the signature, technical and showstopper. Alongside returning themes of Cake, Biscuit, Caramel, Bread, Pastry, Dessert, and Pâtisserie, last year we saw two new weeks: Autumn and 1970s.

The Great British Bake Off 2025 will return to Channel 4 in the UK and Netflix in the US.

007: Road to a Million S2 release date

This hotly anticipated second series of 007: Road to a Million is available on Prime Video, with all eight episodes landing on Friday, August 22.

Who's fronting the series?

Succession star Brian Cox is back in the hot seat as The Controller and this time the stakes are even higher as the duos must now compete directly against each other - rather than individually - in a series of physical, psychological and strategic 007-style missions against the clock, with the poorest performing pair each episode being eliminated.

Talking about what's new for series two, Brian says: "There's more interaction between me and the contestants and the show is infinitely more Bond-related. I now have an assistant in the control room which feels very Bond. She gives me information on the contestants as I watch them on monitors - it’s more dramatic than last time."

What kinds of challenges will the contestants be up against?

From scaling towers in Bangkok to wreck diving with sharks in the Bahamas, each location is straight out of a Bond movie.

In the first episode, contestants bungee-jump off Luzzone Dam in Switzerland, re-enacting actor Pierce Brosnan's iconic leap as Bond off the Verzasca Dam in 1995 film GoldenEye…

"The contestants really get to see and do some extraordinary things - it’s a sheer spectacle, but it also confirms to me why I’m in the control room and not doing the competition!," says Brian. "I’d never bungee jump in a million years - but one person's definition of fun is quite different from another's!"

As well as having to embrace the physical side of the challenges, the change in gameplay means that the couples will now get to play mind games with each other...

"I'd be good at that," says Brian. "That's where I’d excel, because I understand how people tick, and their strengths and weaknesses. It’s quite hard to know who's actually going to win. I'm not very good at predicting that because all sorts of things can happen along the way."

And, as The Controller, Brian's job is to toy with the duos and exploit any weaknesses...

"I suppose that’s part of my character as The Controller; the cat and mouse thing," he says. "There’s a father and son who made a mistake at one point and I felt very empathetic. The Controller is not openly compassionate, but he's not without sensibility and sensitivity to who these contestants are."

Presumably, there are eliminations. How do they work?

The two slowest pairs on each mission must face off against each other in the Killer Question - an immersive, high-tension brain-teaser that will result in one pair being eliminated.

At the end of the series, having defeated all their rivals, the final surviving couple face The Controller in person in London to get their hands on the whopping £1 million prize.

"That puts people into a very pressured situation, that I personally would never want to put myself into," admits Brian. "I'm not very competitive in that way. I see why people want to do these things but I reserve judgement and get on with my job - which is to be controlling!"

It’s impossible to categorise Mark Wahlberg. From tough crime thrillers and true-life dramas, to comedies and action adventures, he’s done the lot — and a few more.

One that his many fans took to their heart and which, like the actor himself, doesn’t conveniently fit into any particular genre, arrives on Prime Video today [Monday, August 11] and shows us his softer side. Meet Father Stu.

He starts life as Stu Long, the son of a less-than-attentive father (Mel Gibson) and a kind but ineffectual mother (Jacki Weaver). Try as he might, Stu (Wahlberg) can never win his father’s approval and grows up to be a boxer. It's not an especially successful career move: regularly injured, he only wins a few trophies and even less money, despite a determination to make it in the ring.

Calling a halt to boxing, he turns his attention to another dream, this time to be a movie star, and heads for Hollywood. Enjoying the bars and company of beautiful girls in Tinseltown, he’s drawn to Carmen (Teresa Ruiz), who is very involved in the Catholic Church. To get close to her, he pretends to share her faith but, after a serious motorcycle accident and a moment of revelation, he realises he’s being called to the priesthood.

The journey from boxer to priest received a lukewarm response from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, they only gave it 42% but audiences saw it totally differently, buying into the movie’s inspirational tone and religious messages. Their verdict was 95% and it’s become a much-loved favourite among Wahlberg’s fans. Many of them praised a performance that brought authenticity to a moving experience. It was also very much a personal project for the actor, who both produced and spent “millions and millions of dollars” of his own money when no other financial backer could be found.

With a modest budget, it took a respectable £21.6 million at the global box office.

But neither the real story or the movie ends with the decision to become a priest. As he embarks on his new life, Stu is diagnosed with a rare muscle condition, changing his life all over again. Now he has to find a way of living with his disease while pursuing his vocation as a priest. The real Stuart Long/Father Stu died in 2014, just seven years after his ordination, and the film’s final moments show us the real man in footage from the later years in his life.

Wahlberg is no stranger to films based on true stories. One of his biggest critical successes, The Fighter (2010), also had a boxing setting and saw him playing light welterweight Micky Ward, whose road to a world title was overseen by his former-boxer brother, Dicky (Christian Bale) whose drug addiction threatened to sabotage his ambitions. While most of the acting honours, Oscars included, went to Bale and co-star Melissa Leo, Wahlberg received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor.

And just a few years later, he was named Best Actor in an Action Movie for Lone Survivor (2013), which also won Best Action Movie at the same ceremony. The powerful war drama saw Wahlberg play Navy Seal Marcus Luttrell, who led a team sent to capture or kill a notorious Taliban leader in 2005. When their mission doesn’t go according to plan, they have to fight for their lives in one of modern warfare’s most remarkable acts of survival.

The actor’s more emotional side was on show in Joe Bell (2020). He played the title role, a father who walked across America to raise awareness about bullying and suicide in memory of his teenage son, who was bullied for being gay and died by suicide as a result. Once again, audiences embraced the film, giving it 73% on Rotten Tomatoes, warming to its heartfelt message and positive outlook on life.

Father Stu isn’t a conventional faith-based movie, but it’s a reminder that there’s more to Wahlberg than action movies and adult comedies. Sure, he can play for laughs, but he can also take on powerfully emotional roles, often based on true stories, and go straight for the audience’s heartstrings. He rarely misses.

One of the earliest and most influential pieces of science fiction, and easily the most sensational after a 23-year-old Orson Welles got his hands on it, "The War Of The Worlds" has been with us since H G Wells’ original novel was published in 1898.

Since then, it's been an album musical, a stage show, a terrifying piece of radio and, of course, several movies. And its latest incarnation has just arrived today [Wednesday, July 30] without any fanfare in the shape of Prime Video's War Of The Worlds, bringing the story slap bang into the 21st century.

The novel told its story through the eyes of an unnamed narrator, an educated man who is one of the first to notice strange flashes from Mars and escapes to the country when London and the south of England are invaded by Martians. But this is a narrative that can easily move to just about any other time and/or place.

Notoriously, for his 1938 radio version, Orson Welles shifted it to New Jersey and presented listeners with news bulletins so convincing they caused panic in the streets. It wasn’t until 1953 that the first major film appeared, this time setting the invasion in small town California, where excited residents watched as a flaming meteor lands in the hills and fled in fear when they realised the visitors were less than friendly.

It's 25 years since Steven Spielberg took a more blockbuster approach to the classic novel. While no stranger to science fiction, his War Of The Worlds was a long way from his earlier, optimistic forays into the genre such as E.T.(1982), following instead in the darker footsteps of A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001) and Minority Report (2002) and turning it into more of a disaster movie, this time set in New York.

The brand new version from debut director Rich Lee doesn't just move location — this time it's Washington DC — but the premise and style come in for an overhaul as well.

It's a screenlife movie — think Searching (2018) and Host (2020) among others — so the majority of the action takes place on a computer screen, with the audience’s attention alternating between the pc itself and the face of the operator.

In this case, it's Ice Cube as Will Radford, a high-level government surveillance operative who is first alerted to strangely violent weather conditions around the world, only to find they’ve landed at his doorstep in DC. Long-legged invaders modelled on the film’s predecessors and Wells’ book rampage across the city, but this time with specific targets in their sights. They feed on data and are aiming for the main repositories. It could mean world destruction and, in trying to prevent it, Radford also uncovers a massive government conspiracy.

A cyber-thriller, then. A low budget one — it was filmed in 2020 under COVID restrictions and it shows — but one that allows us to focus very much on the impending catastrophe, whether we’re looking at it through our own eyes or that of Radford as he stares at the screen in disbelief. And he’s juggling personal issues at the same time, none of which he can control as he’d like: his daughter is heavily pregnant and his teenage son is turning into something of a rebel.

The introduction of a family takes its cue from Spielberg, as do the fractured relationships, but the difference is that we’re not allowed to get really involved with any of them. In the 2005 movie, Tom Cruise is an essentially unsympathetic father figure: his children have grown up knowing they can’t count on him and he uses them as weapons in his battles with his ex-wife. Radford, by contrast, is a widower, struggling to bring up his son and daughter all on his own.

Director Lee and his writers Kenny Golde and Marc Hyman haven't just taken War Of The Worlds into cyber territory, but used it to major on concerns about data safety and high-level conspiracies.

Controversy seems to stalk Wells’ original story, from the headline-hitting chaos following the 1930s radio broadcast to criticism of Spielberg’s post-9/11 setting and scenes, such as the crashed airliner and crowds fleeing the city, that could have resurrected painful memories. By venturing into more political territory, the makers may find themselves courting unwelcome controversy, but, once again, it shows how a late Victorian novel can be as relevant as ever some 30 years later.

Ahead of the release of its final season, The Boys gets another foray into its world with Gen V season 2, which is coming very soon.

This college-set drama is set in the superhero-riddled world of the main series, following a cast of characters who need to learn about their powers and understand their identity.

The first series of Gen V featured some heavy tie-ins with The Boys; in fact some episodes of The Boys season 4 both spoiled Gen V and made less sense if you hadn't seen it. But that's set to be par for the course from hereon with several more spin-offs expanding the universe of the show, including The Boys: Mexico and Vought Rising.

So for fans of the dark superhero universe, Gen V season 2 is set to be required watching. Here's what you need to know about it.

The premiere date for Gen V season 2 is Wednesday, September 17, and we're going to see three episodes on release date.

After that, episodes will likely come weekly, although that hasn't been confirmed. An episode count also hasn't been announced but the past season, and all runs of The Boys, have had 8.

You'll be able to watch Gen V season 2 on Prime Video, where the first season and the original series all live.

Despite what you'd expect given how the first season ended, Gen V season 2 sees the core cast of characters return to Godolkin University School of Crimefighting.

However with Homelander how running the show in the US, the school is very different. The dean is turning the superhero children under his care into soldiers, and war between 'Supes' and humans seems near. However the main characters discover a new secret program which could affect the events about to play out.

The main cast of the first season of Gen V are mostly set to return for the new batch of episodes. This includes:

Amazon's cast list misses Andre Anderson (Chance Perdomo) but it's possible that he's just been reduced in billing, instead of dropped from the series completely. That's especially true because his in-universe dad, the superhero Polarity (Sean Patrick Thomas) has been promoted to lead status.

So has Hamish Linklater, who plays the new Godolkin dean.

As with Gen V season 1, it's also very possible that the show will include cameos from the main series' cast, but we'll have to wait for the show to release to be certain.

The Assassin is a gripping new crime thriller on Prime Video, that sees Bodyguard and The Durrells star Keeley Hawes play Julie, a retired assassin who is now living a quiet life on a secluded Greek island.

However, Julie's world is turned upside down when her estranged son Edward (The Good Doctor's Freddie Highmore) visits from England with some difficult questions. Soon, Julie finds her past catching up with her, and they are forced to flee the island and go on the run.

As mother and son battle for survival, the pair are confronted by a dark conspiracy and a threat that will destroy their relationship forever.

Here is everything that happened in The Assassin episode 6...

The final episode opens with Edward waking up in his childhood bedroom. Marie is smiling at him and she welcomes him home. He passes out again. At an airport in Spain, Julie and Luka arrive. Luka is nervous about travelling with a wanted criminal, but Julie says he insisted on coming with her. Julie has a voicemail from Kayla. She says she’s heard from the pilot that they’ve landed safely and to call her when she can. She tells Luka she’s not calling Kayla back, but he thinks she should since Kayla flew them to Spain on her private jet. Julie corrects him that it’s her father’s private jet, but she doesn't want to put anyone else in more danger.

Julie and Luka approach a car in an empty hangar. There’s a car seat in the back with a toy bear in it and Julie says that either Cyrus is giving them cover or he’s messing with her. Luka asks who Cyrus is, but Julie doesn’t answer. Instead, she opens the boot and reveals guns and explosives hidden inside. As they sit in the car, Luka picks up a tape that’s been left next to the toy bear. He tells Julie Cyrus must’ve made her a mixtape. It says February 1999. He tells her Cyrus must be a good friend and Julie calls him a colleague. As they play the tape though, Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan’s ‘Especially For You’ begins and Julie says Cyrus is definitely messing with her.

Meanwhile, at the hospital, Michael tells Ezra he’s the acting head of CGM since his dad is incapcitated. He tells Ezra that Kayla is adamant there’s a press release she wants to put out and Ezra says that won’t happen. Edward wakes up again and Marie hands him some water. She tells him he’s home, in Spain, in the first house he ever lived in. Edward wants to know the truth and so, Marie begins to explain. She says that 29 years ago, Kayla’s family ordered for Edward’s father to be killed. She tells him that evening, she’s going to make everything right again.

Outside, Julie and Luka are monitoring Marie’s house from the hills. She tells him her life was straightforward before she stepped into that house all those years ago. She wonders what Edward’s life would’ve been like if she'd just left him there. Julie says Marie is waiting for them. They head back to the car and Luka asks Julie how she does a job like that and carries on. She reassures him that whatever he had to do to Damian, it was for a good reason. She explains that the first person she killed was in the army and it never got any easier.

Julie says she still sees every single one, but that it got easier to live with. She says whatever Luka is thinking he is now, Julie is so much worse, and that everything that happened on the island is her fault. So, she needs to go into that house and make it right, no matter what happens to her.

Back in France, Ezra heads home and tells Kayla about being the acting head of CGM. Kayla asks if that means Ezra can send out their father’s security guards to find Edward. He says they shouldn’t use company resources for that and Kayla said he wasn’t concerned when he used them to put a hit on Jasper. Ezra tells her he knows she wants to put a press release out and she gets up to leave. He asks her where she’s going and she says Spain. Kayla says she needs to find Edward and Ezra tells her if she can leave the past in the past, he’ll throw everything he has at finding Edward for her.

Julie and Luka arrive at Marie’s house in Spain. She hands him a radio and tells him to contact her if anyone moves in, out or around the house. She tells him not to stay where he is and hands him a gun for protection. As she tells him goodbye, he kisses her. She kisses him back. Inside, Marie shows Edward his father’s office. It’s covered in artefacts, which she calls his prized possessions. A guard watches the CCTV around the house. Marie wants to explain to Edward what Julie did. Meanwhile, Julie jumps over the wall into the compound. Marie tells Edward that Julie killed his mother. Julie enters a side building and finds all of Marie’s surveillance on her and Edward. On the wall, a Manga comic she’s drawn.

Marie continues to explain to Edward that her and his father were making love upstairs when Julie broke in 29 years ago. She explains in detail and Edward is grossed out. Marie explains that Julie broke in and Jean-Luc had gone downstairs to work, she shot him in the head. At the same time, Julie is looking at the comic on the wall that depicts exactly this. Marie explains that Julie heard her and shot her, and then she must’ve heard him crying and took him. Edward realises that Marie is his mother. They hug and Marie apologises to him. She explains her art has saved her all these years. In the comic though, it shows Julie killing Kayla on the boat as she was hired to do, but she didn’t. Edward tells Marie he feels sorry for what she went through, but that her psychophatic madness isn’t going to help. She says it will.

Luka radios Julie to tell her someone’s coming. She plants an explosive device in a bag and leaves it in the building. As the guard enters, she shoots him dead. She then approaches a guard that was watching the CCTV and shoots him, too. She sees Marie and Edward on the cameras in the basement. She then spots herself on the cameras and shoots it. She starts to take the other cameras offline. Marie tells Edward his real name is Florent.

Julie continues to move around the compound, taking guards out. Meanwhile, Marie gives Edward a necklace with a F on it that was a gift for his baptism. She explains that the trust fund was set up for him and that Julie must’ve contacted the lawyers to make sure he got it. The guard in the basement leaves to find out what’s going on with the cameras. Edward smashes Marie round the head with the case of the necklace and runs off. Marie instructs her guards to chase him down, saying she wants both Julie and Edward alive. Luka tries to radio to Julie, but she doesn’t reply. Meanwhile, Edward runs into Julie in a hallway.

Edward explains to Julie that Marie told him the truth. She says they can talk about it later, but they have to move now. He says that she shot his father and stole him away. She checks they’re safe and explains to him that she didn’t steal him. She had a job from Damian to kill Jean-Luc and that was all she knew about him was that he was the kind of rich you don’t get by being nice. But, after she shot him, she heard a noise and shot at Marie. She didn’t check Marie’s pulse because she heard Edward crying.

She didn’t want to leave him there alone, so she took him. She says she can’t explain it, but she felt she needed to protect him. She says she was pregnant once, but she miscarried and she was relieved because she felt she wasn’t supposed to be a mother. But, she says she never forgave herself for what she did. She explains that’s why she isolated herself. Edward cries and tells her his real name is Florent. He says he’s 30 and he’s only just found out he’s French. Julie tells him she wants to get him out of there safe and then he never has to see her again.

The Assassin ending explained

To this, Marie speaks over the cameras. She says she imagined this in her head lots of times and how good it would be, but it's so much better. Edward asks Marie what her plan is. He says he’s her son, so she wouldn’t hurt him. To this, Marie says Edward isn’t actually hers. Jean-Luc wanted kids, so they paid for a surrogate. She says she wouldn’t even change his diaper and to this, Julie shoots the camera out so she can't say anymore. Luka watches as more men arrive in a car. He tries to tell Julie, but he’s not getting through. Edward starts to feel lightheaded and tells Julie it must be from the drugs Marie gave him to get him to Spain. As they head outside, Edward stumbles against the wall, propping himself up. Julie asks him if he can make the gate by the main entrance. He nods, but the guard above hears them underneath him. Julie shoots him.

Julie drags Edward to safety and tells him it’s too risky to leave by the guards and they can’t go over the wall if Edward is unwell. Edward struggles to get up, but they try to head to the main gate. As Luka’s watching, he sees the man who shot his family and friends at the beach. He gets his gun out. As Julie and Edward continue round the compound, they see Marie talking to two guards. Julie says they’ll need to go past them. To distract them, she sets off the explosive device she left in the side building off. Julie runs up behind Marie and holds a gun up to her and tells her to call off her guards. At the same time, Edward is suffering and falls to the ground. Julie asks Marie what she gave him and Marie says it was a bit of ketamine. She tells Julie that’s not what is making him sick. When Julie asks what she means, Marie tells her that Florent is dying.

Meanwhile, up on the hill, a car approaches Luka. It’s Kayla. He asks her what she’s doing there and she says she’s there because he told her where Edward was. She notices his gun and he says the man who killed his village is in the compound, but he’s not hearing from Julie over the radio so doesn’t know if her and Edward are okay. Luka says he’s going in, but Kayla has to stay there. She shows him she’s brought armed guards with her. Kayla's team start taking out guards with a sniper as Luka, Kayla and more guards head in on the ground.

Marie explains to Julie that she was in a coma for years and when she woke up, she couldn’t walk or speak. But she got better by imagining her revenge. Julie again asks Marie what she gave Edward and she tells her, aconitine. She got it from an article Edward wrote called ‘The Power of Plants’. She says Edward’s a vegan and it’s a plant that’s killing him, which is ironic. Marie says she can give him a shot of atropine from inside the house to keep him alive long enough to get to the hospital. Marie sends her guards away to watch the gate. When Julie tries to ask Marie what she wants, she lights up a cigarette and tells Julie she’s having so much fun.

Meanwhile, the guards are fighting each other. Again, Julie again asks Marie what she wants. She apologises for what she did, but she says it was just a job. Marie says Julie murdered him. She says she’s been plotting her revenge because Julie took everything away from her that night. Luka finds the guard that killed his village. The guard tells him he is just paid to be there, but Luka tells him to drop the gun out of his vest. Luka asks the guard if he recognises him and tells him it was from the island.

Julie wants to know if Marie has the antidote and Marie says she’ll give it to Edward, but only if he shoots Julie dead. The guard asks Luka if he’s just going to keep waving the gun at him. Luka can’t stop picturing all the men the guard killed in front of him, but he can't do it and he drops to the ground crying. The armed guards with Kayla arrest the guard instead.

Edward tells Julie to shoot Marie. He says they can’t trust her, to which Marie says he’s the only part of Jean-Luc left in the world for her, so she doesn’t want him dead. Edward is suffering more and more as times goes by. Julie leans down next to him and says she started this and she deserves it. Marie says Julie is right and that Marie is the victim here. She tells him Julie is not the hero of this story to which Julie hands the gun to Edward. Marie encourages him and tells them she’s enjoying it. But, as Marie continues to tell him to do it, calling him Florent even though he asked her not to, he shoots. But, not at Julie. Instead, he has shot Marie in the head, killing her.

Just in time, Kayla arrives and Julie tells her that Edward has been poisoned and they need to get to the hospital right away. Julie is concerned they won’t get there fast enough by road and Kayla offers a helicopter. Back in France, Ezra is looking at a photo of his mum and Michael walks in. He tells him he’s sorry for Ezra’s loss and that toxicology confirmed Aaron took a fatal overdose of Lorazepam and Oxycodone. Ezra said he’d seen him taking pills, but thought they were sleeping pills or supplements. Michael says he didn’t know Aaron took Oxycodone. He tells Ezra he knows he has taken it, though. Ezra says his father must’ve got confused under all the stress.

On the helicopter, Edward is in and out of consciousness but sees that Kayla is there with him. Julie says she won’t get in the helicopter because he won’t want her to, but to let her know if he’s okay. She agrees. Julie and Luka watch as the helicopter takes off. They hold hands. Meanwhile, Ezra burns the letter that his mother wrote.

It cuts to three months later. Edward and Kayla are on a boat together. Kayla says she should’ve told Ezra to shove it and just go public with the truth. Edward says maybe some secrets are best left buried. They’re in Greece and Edward asks Kayla what she thinks his real mum will be like. She says maybe she’ll be a saint because Edward turned out okay. She jokes that he's passable. He says Kayla is still marrying him, so the joke is on her. Julie is there and Kayla goes off to make coffee, leaving them to talk.

She gets a text on her phone and smiles. Edward asks if it’s Luka and she’s happy. She says she just wanted to thank Edward for letting her come. He tells her she has her uses, in case anyone needs snuffing out along the way. Julie asks if Edward thinks his mother is really going to be there and he says she thinks she will. Julie says she can’t wait to meet her. She jokes about his sandals and he jokes back at her that she’s the fashion police, as well as a contract killer. She responds that it pays well and he asks her how much she got paid for killing people. To which she tells him, loads.

The Assassin is a gripping new crime thriller on Prime Video, that sees Bodyguard and The Durrells star Keeley Hawes play Julie, a retired assassin who is now living a quiet life on a secluded Greek island.

However, Julie's world is turned upside down when her estranged son Edward (The Good Doctor's Freddie Highmore) visits from England with some difficult questions. Soon, Julie finds her past catching up with her, and they are forced to flee the island and go on the run.

As mother and son battle for survival, the pair are confronted by a dark conspiracy and a threat that will destroy their relationship forever.

Here is everything that happened in The Assassin episode 5...

The penultimate episode opens in Northern Greece. Luka is driving on a long and winding road, alone. He arrives in a town and sits down at a restaurant. He reads a newspaper with the front page story about the massacre at the wedding. All 21 who died are pictured and Luka is sad as he looks at them all. He turns the page and sees Julie and Edward photographed. He appears panicked and heads into a butcher nearby.

Inside, the butcher and Luka converse. Luka tells the butcher he used to have a similar shop in the south of Greece. When the butcher asks him if he’s going back, he explains there’s nothing there for him anymore. When Luka asks the butcher how much it’ll cost, the butcher asks whether he means the price of the lamb. Luke corrects him and says he actually wants the price of the meat cleaver the butcher used to cut it.

It cuts to Athens. Jasper and Edward are running from the female shooter as she pursues them. Julie is chasing after them as the assassin continues to shoot. Over an earpiece, the assassin tells four men waiting in a parked car that Jasper and Edward have headed into a car park and they have to stop them getting out. Edward and Jasper hide as the men enter. But, as the men look around, Julie tackles one of them to the ground and takes his gun, shooting him dead. She then shoots another.

As she’s about to shoot one more, he spots her in the wing mirror and they begin to fight. Julie manages to shoot him in the leg and overpowers him, but then runs out of bullets. She grabs a broken bottle nearby and slices his throat. Edward pulls out his gun and tries to pursue the last man, but the man tackles them to the ground. Before he can shoot them though, Julie kills him.

As the female assassin enters and starts shooting, Julie tells Edward and Jasper to get outside. The woman manages to shoot the gun out of Julie’s hand and while Edward and Jasper escape, the assassin follows them outside and holds a gun up at them. As they plead her not to shoot, a car runs her over. It’s Marie. She tells Edward to get in the car and that Julie sent for her. Edwards does as she says and Jasper waits behind. The female assassin gets up and tries to shoot again, but Marie runs her over.

Meanwhile, Ezra is looking at his phone of the reports of the shooting in the park. He tries to call someone. At the same time, Julie makes it outside and asks Jasper where Edward is. He tells her he got in the car with a woman. Julie runs up to the assassin’s dead body on the floor.

Her phone is ringing. Julie picks up and asks who it is as Ezra sits on the other end of the phone, silent. She tells him that his team is dead and she’ll come for him next if he doesn’t tell her where her son is. Ezra hangs up. Jasper explains the woman and the car, but he doesn’t know details. She holds a gun up to his side and tells him he needs to calm down, so he can start being useful.

It cuts to France. Kayla is looking at the letter that her father was hiding. Aaron tells her he wishes he’d burnt it, but couldn’t. He tells her it was the last thing Kayla’s mother ever wrote to him. A suicide note. Kayla says her mother killed herself because of him and he says it isn’t true. He wants the letter back. He says the context is important to understand why she did what she did and Kayla asks him if she thinks the world would understand if they saw the letter, too.

Edward’s in the car with Marie, insisting they go back to his mum. He also wants to find Kayla and make sure she’s safe. Marie tells him Julie is making sure everything is okay. As Edward calms down, he asks her who she is and Marie explains she’s his aunt. He’s not sure if he can trust her. Marie says they’ll meet Julie in a safe house outside of town and she’ll explain everything. Edward makes her pull over and she does. She says he can take his chances on his own, but instead, he agrees to go to the safe house with her.

Aaron is sitting in his garden as he takes two pills. His phone rings and a man tells him they found the boat and they suspect he boarded the boat in Tripoli, but the trail has gone cold. Aaron is annoyed. Meanwhile, Luka is now in Albania. He steps out of his car at the isolated place where Damian was staying. He’s lying inside, suffering from being shot by Julie. Damian says he’s glad Luka came back and Luka tells him he doesn’t care about him. He wants to know who killed his friends on his island. Damian says he doesn’t know, but Luka wants his laptop. Damian insists it’s gone and Luka gets out the meat cleaver he bought from the butcher and cuts his arm. Damian talks. He says the laptop has all the names and numbers of all the clients. Damian will die if the list gets out, but Luka says he can make it quick and painless, unlike them. When Damian doesn’t talk, Luka hacks into Damian’s arm.

In France, Kayla hands the original letter back to Aaron. She says she’s made copies. He tells her that him and her mother made the bad decision together, but releasing the information would ruin him and his mother’s memory. He tells her while Kayla's mother couldn’t live with the consequences, she’s as guilty as he is. He said he didn’t want her to know any of it. He sits down and offers to tell her about the word, Chantaines. He tells Kayla it was the name of her mother’s French poodle. She named the dog after this orange marmalade she loved. Kayla says she thinks people deserve to know what they did and Aaron says she should think about it before she blows it all up.

As Marie and Edward drive along, she tells him his dad is still alive. But, she pulls over when she notices a checkpoint up ahead. She tells him to get in the trunk. He doesn’t trust her and she tries to convince him by telling him she knows his birthmark and that she last saw him when he was just one. He believes her and gets in the trunk. Marie pulls up to the checkpoint and the policeman asks to see her driver’s license. Marie starts to tell a story about how her sister is giving birth and she’s the birthing partner, so she needs to go. The policeman shows her a photo of his son on his phone. He says she can go, but he needs to check her boot first. Hearing this, she shoots him dead and races off with Edward still in the boot.

Luka is cleaning up after hacking at Damian’s arm. Damian pleads with Luka not to leave him to die, but Luka silently walks away, picking up the green case as he goes. Elsewhere, Ezra is looking at press reports again of the shooting in Athens Park. Kayla comes in. She asks him if he thinks there’s ever a good reason for telling a lie. He tells her everyone lies. She tries to hand him the letter, but he said he promised Aaron he’d keep it under wraps. She insists and when he won’t take it, she says she’ll read it to him instead. He grabs it off her and starts reading. Kayla tells Ezra to come find her when he’s ready to talk.

Marie gets Edward out of the boot. She tells him they got waved right through the checkpoint. Edward begins to ask about his dad, Marie tells him he’s called Roy and that they grew up in southern California. When he demands to know who he really is and why his mum hid him, Marie says Julie wants to tell him herself.

Marie starts to talk about Manga. She asks Edward if he knows who Eren Yeager is. He says he doesn’t. She explains Eren is a character from Attack on Titan. He’s seen as a monster by the rest of the world, but from his perspective, he’s becoming who he truly is. He doesn’t want revenge, he wants freedom and that it’s important to understand what someone is really trying to do and why. She says when Edward hears the truth, he should remember that.

Julie has taken Jasper to the safe house to talk to him. He explains he is head of IT for CGM and that he’d been looking at his boss, Aaron Cross’s email. He says there was a word mentioned, Chantaines, and that it said no-one could ever find out, so he blackmailed Aaron. Then, he was arrested. He said though when he was in prison, he got in contact with Aaron and said he’d tell everyone what he knew and then suddenly, he got out of prison.

Julie realises he’s not of any use since he didn’t know any more than just the word but as she goes to shoot him, Luka interrupts by calling her. He tells her he has Damian’s laptop, but there are passwords to get into it. Julie tells him she’s in Athens and Luka says he’s near the Albanian border. She says she needs somewhere remote, but accessible by car, to meet with him. He suggests northern Greece, but tells her to promise to behave if he’s going to bring her to a place he knows. She tells Jasper he might be useful after all and makes him come with her.

Marie pulls into a gas station and steps inside, leaving Edward in the car. He leans into the backseat and pulls out her art book. There are lots of paintings, including of Edward. Marie comes back in and asks her why she has drawings of him. She says she just wanted to see him, but she couldn’t, so she drew him instead. Edward demands the truth. She tells him his father loves him very much and that the trust fund from Anvil Assets was all he could do. Edward asks why he was never in touch and Marie says that’s what Julie wanted. When Edward asks, he tries to grab her phone to call Julie. Marie admits that Julie is not waiting for them, it’s his dad. Edward calms down and asks her then if Ray is going to meet them at the safe house. She smiles and says yes, Ray will meet them there. But then, Edward tells her she said his name was Roy. He jumps out the car and starts running.

Ezra goes to speak to Aaron. Aaron says maybe it’s a good thing that both his children now know the worst thing he’s ever done. Ezra says he understands why Chantaines needs to be protected and that he’ll keep protecting his father now. He won’t let anyone hear anything about it. Aaron says it’s too late. Ezra says he’ll get through to Kayla to protect him and their mother. Aaron explains it’s more complicated than just Kayla.

Ezra brings up Jasper and tells Aaron that he’s on it. Aaron doesn’t know what Ezra is talking about and Ezra explains that Jasper called talking about Chantaines, so he arranged for Jasper’s escape from prison. But, then he explains that Julie and Edward were there, Jasper got away and the person he hired was killed. Ezra says he knows where Jasper is now, but Aaron is angry at Ezra. He blames himself saying he was too busy with work when Ezra's mother died. He says he told Ezra he was smart, but he’s actually just a narcissist with no intelligence at all. Aaron also accuses him of being high. He tells Ezra it’s not a big joke and that he could’ve never run the business. And that while he’d never thought much of Ezra anyway, he’s disappointed him even further. Aaron dismisses him from the room. Aaron reaches for his pills again after Ezra leaves.

Julie meets Luka on the side of the road. He hands her Damian’s laptop. She tells him that Edward is gone and someone took him. She explains she brought Jasper along to help with the encryption of the laptop. Luka is angry she brought Jasper as they will be staying at his mother’s house and it’s hard to explain a man with no fingers. Julie says she needed somewhere remote because she’s wanted.

Luka tells her that his mother doesn’t watch the news and has bad eyesight. They head inside and Luka introduces his mother to Julie. Luka’s mother speaks in Greek, suggesting to Luka that Julie is romantically involved with him, but he says they’re just friends and Julie speaks Greek. Julie says she needs to head downstairs to start work. Downstairs, they let Jasper in. Julie tells him she needs him to break into the laptop. They have floppy disks. Jasper asks for payment and Julie says she’ll let him live, that’s his payment.

Ezra goes into Kayla’s room with the letter. She wants to get the truth out and tells him they’re not their parents and that they can do better. She tells him she’s drafting an email to find someone to help her get the truth out. They’re interrupted by the maid shouting. Aaron is unconscious with his head on his desk. Empty pill bottles lay around him. Kayla tells Ezra to call an ambulance.

Edward is running along the side of the road. He finds a payphone, but before he calls anyone, Marie stabs him in the neck with a needle and he drops to the floor. She cradles him in her arms and sings him a lullaby. Meanwhile, Julie watches as Luka’s mother is affectionate towards him.

Uncomfortable, Julie excuses herself. Luka’s mother tells him he should look after his girlfriend and he again insists, she’s not, but his mother says she can tell he cares about her. At the hospital, Kayla blames herself, but then asks Ezra what he was talking to Aaron about before he took the pills. He explains to her he was just telling Ezra he was disappointed in him. He tells her he put a hit on Jasper and that he used Edward’s aunt, Marie. Kayla’s angry because now she doesn’t know if Edward is safe and Ezra says he thinks he is. She storms off.

Julie is watching Jasper anxiously, but he says the encryption is very serious. If he does anything wrong, the hard drive will fry itself. He tells her she just has to wait. Luka comes to see Julie outside. She tells him she feels like it’s all her fault and she wonders what will happen if she can’t find Edward. But, even if she does, then what does she do? She explains that Edward was an accident and she’s never been a good mother. She wanted to protect him from his father, but she wonders if she should’ve just been honest with him even if he hated her for it. Luka says that all we can do is try and that she should be kinder to herself. That she should see herself as others see her. When she asks who, he says himself.

Kayla calls Julie and asks if Edward is okay. When Julie says someone took him, Kayla explains it was Ezra that organised the hit. She explains that he only did it because he met Edward’s aunt at a party. Julie tells Kayla that Edward doesn’t have an aunt. And now, they don’t know who she is. In the house, Luka’s mum screams and Julie hangs up the phone as they run inside. Jasper is holding a knife up to Luka’s mother. He tells them he has full access to the laptop, but he won’t give it unless he has his safety guaranteed and some money. As they argue, Luka’s mother whacks him round the head with one of her pans and he drops to the floor.

Marie calls someone from her car and asks if everything is ready to go. A man’s voice says it is and that they’re expecting her. Edward is passed out on the backseat. Meanwhile, they’ve tied Jasper to a chair. Julie is on the laptop and can’t find anything about Chantaines or Cross. Luka asks what they should do with Jasper and Julie says to get rid of him. Luka gets out a knife and Jasper starts pleading. Luka approaches him, leans down, and cuts the rope that they’ve used to tie him to the chair.

Kayla calls Julie. She tells Kayla she’s on the laptop. Kayla suggests searching her mum’s name, Leila. Julie asks why Kayla’s mum’s name would be on there and she explains that her mum and dad got into some trouble and they got money from an arms dealer. The man got greedy when the company took off and they hired an assassin to kill him. Chantaines was a codename they used, which was the name of her mum’s French poodle. Julie searches 'French Poodle' in the laptop and gets a search result. Julie remembers the job. Spain, 1994.

Marie arrives at an airfield. A man is waiting alongside a private jet. Julie tells the story of Spain and that Damian had hired her to take a target out, an arms dealer called Jean-Luc Bertrand. Jean-Luc wasn’t alone and when she was done, she heard a noise. She realised his family were there. Marie takes a photo of Edward in the back of the car before the man pulls his body out. Julie receives the photo. Marie has written: “Taking Edward home. See you soon”. When Luka asks where home is, Julie explains in Spain where the original job was. The woman, Julie thinks, is Edward’s mum.

Prime Video UK has just added The Assassin, a gripping new crime thriller that I just can't get enough of.

The series, which sees Bodyguard and The Durrells star Keeley Hawes play Julie, a retired assassin who is now living a quiet life on a secluded Greek island, is one of those shows that comes along every once in a while and just captivates you. From the very first episode, the show had me gripped so tightly that I barely thought of anything else until the series came to its stunning end.

The story follows Julie, who is now retired and hiding out in a tiny Greek cottage. And for a while, her quiet life works perfectly - that is until her estranged son Edward (The Good Doctor's Freddie Highmore) visits from England with some difficult questions.

As she struggles to tell Edward that this entire life has been built on not just one lie, but a whole mountain of them, Julie soon finds her past catching up with her and the pair are forced to go on the run.

Soon Edward (who couldn't be less like his killer mum if he tried) is drawn into Julie's dangerous world, and the pair are left fighting for their lives as they try and work out who is trying to kill them, and why.

Soon secrets and lies from both Julie and - believe it or not - lovely Edward, and spilling out and threatening their already fragile relationship... but in the face of tragedy and horror, could this road trip that no one asked for bring the mother/son duo together?

The best thing about this show is the main characters, both Keeley Hawes and Freddie Highmore are phenomenal as Julie and Edward, and the scriptwriters also deserve a special mention because not only is this a chilling thriller, it also has some hilarious one-liners.

With their relationship strained to say the least, Edward and Julie's dialogue is sarcastic and condescending, but in a refreshingly brilliant way. One minute you will see someone being killed with a cheese fork, and the next you will be laughing about an off-the-cuff quip from Edward.

Honestly - this is a show that you can't afford to miss, and I couldn't recommend it more.

The creative minds behind The Tourist has moved onto a new thriller TV show, called The Assassin, and you can now watch it after it released on Friday, July 25... well, depending on where you live.

The Assassin is about a former contract killer who retires to a remote Greek island to relax her days away. However in quick succession her adult son appears looking for answers, and shortly after assassins come for the women.

The two need to embark on a road trip of Europe as they try to get to the bottom of the attack, while surviving new threats and looking after a charge.

Keeley Hawes and Freddie Highmore star as the mother and son on the run.

The series is only releasing in a limited way for now, but here's how to watch The Assassin online when it comes out.

How to watch The Assassin

The Assassin is set to debut on Friday, July 25... but only in the UK.

All six episodes of the series will release on Prime Video, the streaming service available to Amazon Prime subscribers, at the same time on that date.

I know what you're asking: what about if you're not living in the UK?

Unfortunately, release information hasn't been shared about the series in any other regions. That includes the US, Canada, Australia or any of the countries the show is set in.

It's possible that The Assassin will release on Prime Video in the future, but precedent suggests that it's far from guaranteed, with the streamer often releasing series in one region but relying on local broadcasters in other regions.

Out now in the UK on the streaming service, it is created by writing brothers Harry and Jack Williams (The Missing, Liar).

The six-parter sees Keeley play a retired contract killer, whose solitary life on an idyllic island is interrupted when her son arrives. It boasts a great cast, here's our who's who guide to all the key characters...

Here is everything that happened in The Assassin episode 4...

The fourth episode opens right where the third left off, with the gun going off in the middle of the night after Damian woke Julie with a gun to her head. The shot that we heard at the end of the last episode was Edward shooting, but missing Damian. However, his shot distracts Damian and allows Julie to overpower him and get his gun. He laughs, saying she won't shoot him, but she shoots him in the stomach. Edward is shocked to see his mum shoot someone, but Julie points out he just also tried to shoot Damian. Damian begs for his life, telling him that he will help Julie if she lets him, but when she asks if he had a backup of his old green laptop, he still maintains that it is gone. He tells her he can help her run and disappear, but she wants to shoot him dead. Edward points out Damian is unarmed now and wants to just leave, which eventually they do, taking Damian's truck with them. Damian is left bleeding on the floor, and when he goes to call someone, he finds his phone is dead.

As they drive through the night to Athens, Edward sleeps and wakes to find they have arrived at a safehouse where Julie used to stay with Pavel, the man who Edward points out tried to kill her at the wedding and who she ended up smashing over the head with a rock. Julie suggests that Edward gets some more sleep, but he is cross with her after losing his fiancée, having people trying to kill him and finding out his whole life has been based on a lie... but she has nothing and tells him tomorrow is a new day.

In France, Kayla arrives home to the villa, and Ezra is there to greet her with her annoying brotherly digs. He asks her how Albania was, and she tells him she just wants to sleep. She notices there are security guards everywhere and is annoyed when Ezra tells her that Jasper called, but he hung up on him. He tells her that they need to find out what Chantaine is and then they can work out if they are actually in danger or not. He tells her about their dad's safe in his office and suggests they try and find out what the bit of paper is. Either way, Ezra points out that they're in good hands with their dad's security guards, but as they're talking inside, one of the guards, Chris, is outside, checking his bank account, which has a huge amount of money deposited into it. Marie calls and asks him if the money has arrived. Chris confirms that it has, and that the 'job' will be done soon, as he looks back at the siblings through the window.

In Athens, Julie makes them a questionable dinner when her acquaintance Sirus arrives and she greets him like an old friend. He is carrying what looks like a pizza box, but when he opens it, it's like a selection box of guns, and Julie chooses which one she wants. She goes to pay him, and he tells her it is a retirement gift. After Sirus has left, Edward questions why his mum needs another gun, but she says it isn't for her - it's for him. They head to an old warehouse so Edward can do some target practice, but it doesn't go well, and he tells Julie he gives up. He doesn't want to go on the run for an indefinite amount of time, but is instead going home to his old life. She points out that while it is her they are trying to kill, they'll use him to get to her.

Back in France, Kayla goes to see Aaron in his office and he tells her he is glad to see her home. She asks him what Chantaine is and if he is the one who tried to have her killed. He says she is his daughter and would never hurt her, but she challenges him to prove it by showing her what is in his safe. He says there are some documents, some collectables and an overpriced watch that is too expensive to wear. When he opens it, the letter on yellow paper is missing and Aaron tells his daughter that he has never heard the word Chantaine before.

In Tripoli, Jasper is at the port where he buys a mobile phone and calls Ezra again. This time, Ezra wants to talk and get more details from Jasper, but as they are talking, Jasper sees a man in a suit showing his photo to people as he searches for him, so he hangs up and hides.

At her safehouse in Athens, Julie is alone now that Edward has left. She turns on the TV and watches the news, only to see a report on the wedding shooting back on the Greek island, and she and Edward are named as prime suspects for the crime. She is horrified as their photos come onto the screen and there is an appeal for witnesses from the police.

Meanwhile, Edward is in the city trying to get the public phones to work. In the end, he asks in a restaurant and calls Kayla, but she cancels the call. He keeps ringing, but when he answers and realises it is him, she throws the phone on the sofa. Ezra picks it up and explains about Jasper and the fact they're in danger, and Edward asks to join the call when Jasper rings back, as being a journalist, he will ask all the right questions. Ezra says yes and they arrange to call later.

As Edward hangs up the phone, he turns round to find the restaurant owner talking hurriedly on the phone, and he sees his face on the screen as the same news report plays out that Julie was watching at the safehouse. Soon, there are police everywhere and Edward realises he has to run and ends up hiding in a random stairwell. The police soon close in on Edward as he gets to the top of the building. Trapped, Edward is forced to jump from one building to the other, finally escaping the police, and he couldn't be happier with himself.

Meanwhile, back in France, Chris comes into Aaron's office and tries to shoot him. Aaron hides under the desk and calls for help. Soon, Ezra appears and overpowers Chris, knocking the gun out of his hand and hitting him over the head with a marble statue. Aaron thanks his son for saving his life, and tells Ezra he underestimated him. He asks if he has heard the word Chantaine and Ezra says Kayla mentioned it - and pretends to be blasé about it. Aaron says that he needs Ezra to stop Kayla asking about Chantaine because if it ever got out, it would be the end of the business and the end of their family. Ezra is shocked when his dad reveals he has told the board that when the time is right, Ezra will take over from him as the head of the company and CGM will be his.

Back at the safehouse, Julie is relieved when Edward comes back and tells him he was so worried about him. They are happy to be reunited and Julie has even been shopping for meat-free sausages, showing she is slowly finding her maternal side. Edward asks why they are wanted people and why the police think they are to blame for the wedding shootings, and Julie says so thinks someone high up would have been paid off to put their names out there. Knowing that Edward doesn't want to go on the run, Julie asks what he thinks they should do next, and he seems surprised that she is asking his opinion.

Edward tells his mum all about Jasper calling Ezra at 5 pm, and the whole Chantaine mystery that Kayla also told him about. He tells Julie that when they googled Chantaine it isn't a place and the only hit was for a marmalade. They use Sean's phone again to search Jasper (once again using Sean's severed thumb to unlock it... only for Edward to point out to his mum they could just change the settings to use their own fingerprints to unlock it!) and Edward dials into the call with Jasper and Ezra. Jasper isn't happy about the fact that Edward has joined the call, but eventually, when Ezra promises to send him some money to get to Athens, he softens and agrees to meet Edward when he arrives.

Back in France, Kayla finds her dad and asks if he is okay after his brush with death. He says there was a woman at the party yesterday in Chris's ear. We know this is Marie, but Aaron is making it his mission to find out. Kayla appologises to her dad for accusing him of trying to have her killed, and they make up - but as she pours him a drink with her back to him, she puts something in his drink without him seeing.

Meanwhile, Ezra is looking through his drug stash for his ketamine, and it turns out that is what Kayla has just put in her dad's drink. Still on a high after his dad told him he would one day be running CGM, Ezra is on a drugs binge in his bedroom, and when he can't find his ketamine, he instead takes lines of coke. He calls Marie, and she pretends to be happy for him - however, she soon gets interested in their conversation when Ezra tells her he knows where Edward is going to be - date, time and location - when he meets Jasper.

Still high from his huge drug binge, Ezra has the business card in his hand that Marie gave him after they slept together at the party. He calls the number and asks for someone to assassinate Jasper, giving the time and location of where he will be the following morning.

Edward and Julie organize some new passports under fake names from a contact of Julie's, while discussing the fact that this meeting tomorrow with Jasper is likely to be a trap. Julie tells Edward to get out of the meeting at any point if he feels uncomfortable, and reveals that when he left earlier, she was worried that he might never come back and doesn't want to think those thoughts again.

Back in France, Kayla's helping Aaron back into the house, who is worse for wear after she put Ketamine in his drink. As he falls asleep on the sofa, she uses the chance to search his office for the letter or anything she can find on Chantaine. When she doesn't find anything, she searches her dad's pocket while he sleeps and eventually finds the letter he was hiding the other day. She reads it and there is a look of horror on her face.

The next morning, Jasper arrives on a boat to Athens, while Edward is in position to wait for him, and Julie is watching from afar. Ezra is on edge at breakfast, worrying about the assassin who keeps calling him for the green light to kill Jasper, which Ezra gives.

We see the assassin watching Edward in the busy square and she is dressed as a gardener to blend in. Julie also watches from afar as Jasper arrives and shakes Edward's hand, telling him he can't believe he is finally here. He asks for the money before telling Edward all he needs to know about Chantaine. Edward reveals he doesn't have the cash on him and Jasper is annoyed. But as Edward tells him he will take him to a safehouse to talk, Julie realizes the woman dressed as a gardener is a hit woman and before she can shoot Edward and Jasper, Julie tries to shoot her, but misses. Edward and Jasper run off, with the assassin following... and all Julie can do is call after her son, who is now in grave danger.

The third episode opens in France with Aaron Cross having a meeting with Michael, his lawyer, and trying to cancel an event they are holding for the local community at the villa. Aaron says they have got too much going on, but Michael reminds him this is an annual event where he butters up to locals so they turn a blind eye to his many business wrongdoings. Michael reminds him that as his lawyer, Aaron can tell him anything in confidence, and if he told him the details of Chantaine, then it wouldn't go any further. Aaron refuses to budge and says it will never, and should never, get out.

Meanwhile, Julie and co have arrived in Albania and are on the hunt for Damian's address that Julie found in Sean's phone. Julie tells everyone no phones, social media or credit cards are to be used until they know what is happening, and they can only use Sean's phone, which she unlocks with her back to everyone. Edward asks how she unlocked it, and he is horrified to see she has Sean's chopped-off thumb in her pocket. Kayla looks like she is about to pass out, and Julie jokes that at least it's an old phone and wasn't one that needs Face ID to open it.

Meanwhile, Ezra gets home to France and is reunited with his dad, Aaron. Ezra hugs his dad, who doesn't hug him back, and then explains that Kayla is with Edward and his mother, who is a hitwoman. Aaron seems unimpressed and tells Ezra he has a call. Ezra tells his dad about the fact Julie was hired to kill Kayla, and Aaron seems unfazed by the whole thing, telling his son he is busy. Ezra questions why his dad doesn't seem to care, and Aaron says he does and that he will call security before walking off.

In Albania, Julie, Edward, Kayla and Luka are in the back of a delivery truck, being taken to the address in Sean's phone. Julie tells Luka that he should go back to Greece as staying with them is dangerous, but he says the life he had before no longer exists and he wants to help them track down the people who killed his friends and family.

Back in France, a woman called Marie (the same woman from the art class in the second episode) is playing video games in the bath when she gets a call from the local mayor telling her that thanks to her generous donation, she has been invited to Aaron Cross's party. She says she is honoured and tells the mayor she will be there.

Still in the delivery truck and surrounded by meat, Julie asks Edward and Kayla where they met. She is surprised to learn that they met at a tennis club. When Kayla is out of earshot, Julie points out to her son that he hates tennis and knows something doesn't add up about their meet-cute story. She guesses he had been looking into Kayla and her family, and he doesn't deny it, begging his mum not to ruin things for him as he actually loves Kayla.

Arriving in Tirana, the gang tracks down Damian's apartment, but once there, they find blood all over the walls and the apartment has been trashed. Julie tells them they need to find Damian's laptop as it has all his contacts and information on it, and while she and Luka search the flat, Kayla and Ed go and knock on Damian's neighbour's door. She doesn't want to speak to them but hands a newspaper that reveals a body was found in the local river and has been named as Damian. Julie doesn't buy it, though, and says they should go to the local morgue and check the body.

Meanwhile, the party at Aaron's has begun and Marie has turned up. She gets talking to the mayor, when Ezra comes and whisks her away, telling her that he is saving her from the boring conversation. She is dismissive of him until he says he is Ezra Cross and she seems to change her tune and is keen to get to know him. She tells him she came to the party because she needs his help finding his sister's fiancé and Ezra seems shocked she wants to find Edward.

In Albania, Luka has gone to get them a car, while Julie, Ed and Kayla head into the morgue via an open window at the back. While Kayla keeps a lookout, Julie and Ed head into the room with all the bodies and search for Damian. Ed tells Julie that he is going to be honest with Kayla about how they met, and she tells him it is his funeral.

They find 'Damian', but Julie struggles to ID him as he has been dead much longer than the papers said. As she continues to look - trying to work out if he knows him by looking at his privates, much to Ed's horror - Kayla comes and says someone is coming and they all rush out of the window and get into the tiny car that Luka has found for them. As they race off, the police follow, and it takes a while, but Luka manages to lose them by hiding the tiny car behind a truck.

Back in France, Marie and Ezra are talking and Ezra guesses she is looking for Ed in connection with his dad. It turns out that Marie is Edward's aunt, meaning her brother is Edward's father and she reveals her brother is still alive. Ezra asks if this has anything to do with Edward's mum and the people trying to kill her, but Marie says she has no idea about any of that. Ezra gets a call from his assistant, Troy, but ignores it. As they talk, they realise they both love the same comic series and before long, they end up in bed together.

Back in Albania, the tiny car has broken down, and while Luka tries to fix it, Ed asks his mum why she thought she would be able to ID him by his privates. He thinks it is because they have slept together and that could mean Damian is his father, but Julie denies it. As Kayla points out that she knows a bit about cars and explains the parts they need to fix it, Luka and Julie head off to get the parts from a local mechanic.

While alone, Ed uses the chance to be honest with Kayla and tells her he hates tennis and only went to the club to meet her after someone left him a huge amount of money in a trust for Anvil Assets and that he worked out there was a link between Anvil and CGM. Kayla is shocked when Ed tells her that he called her dad, Aaron, pretending to be someone else, but he hung up when Ed mentioned Anvil Assets and that's when he went to the tennis club to meet her. She is fuming that their relationship is built on a lie and storms off into the Albanian countryside.

Back at the party, Aaron has a lot on his mind with missing Jasper, the danger Kayla's in and nothing Michael says will appease him. Meanwhile, Marie and Ezra are still in bed together and he is asking her how it works with Julie being an assassin. She gives him a business card and he asks how she has the number. She says that it is a long story and for another time.

In Albania, Luka and Julie come back with the parts for the car, and while Luka fixes it, Julie asks where Kayla is. She is sorry for Ed when he tells her that he told her the truth and she has left. Julie shares a random Latin saying with Ed to try and cheer him up, and he suddenly remembers a tattoo on the dead body's arm that he saw earlier while Julie was trying to ID him and that what appeared to be random words in Latin was actually a 'What Three Words' location. Julie realises Damian isn't dead after all and that he wrote that on the corpse's arm, knowing she would come looking for him. They search on Sean's phone (after using his dead finger to unlock it again) and the What Three Words location comes up as somewhere in he middle of nowhere in Albania.

Back in France, Ezra calls Kayla on Marie's request and she picks up, telling him she is in a car and heading to France. He asks where Ed is, and she says she left him in Albania. He is confused and tries to get more information out of her for Marie, but Kayla gets suspicious that someone else is there and hangs up.

Back in Albania, Luka, Julie and Ed arrive at an abandoned house in the middle of nowhere and it turns out Damian is alive and well.

Meanwhile, back in France, Ezra finally answers his phone to his assistant and he says he has a man on the phone desperate to talk to him - it is Jasper, who Ezra doesn't want to talk to until he says the word Chantaine to him. Ezra realises he is the IT man who emailed him a few weeks ago and he is disbelieving when Jasper tells him that no one is safe when it comes to Aaron and keeping whatever Chantaine is a secret, not even Ezra and Kayla, Aaron's own kids. Ezra hangs up and goes to see Aaron to tell him about the call, but Aaron is reading an old letter from a safe hidden behind some books and he yells at his son to get out, which Ezra does, but not before he sees his dad hiding the letter in the safe.

Back at Damian's place, Julie and Damian catch up, while Luka suggests to Ed that maybe Damian is his dad, which he brushes off. Julie asks who is trying to kill her, and he tells her that a while ago, he got home from his morning coffee and found two men waiting for him, asking questions about Julie. He says he didn't tell them anything, but that one tried to kill him, however, he managed to kill one of the men first while the other one ran away. He then used the body as a decoy for his own death and wrote the What Three Words on his arm for Julie to find. He promises her that he has no idea who sent the men, but knew there was a lot of money involved from what they were saying... and Julie is shocked.

Damian tells Julie that the man who he didn't manage to kill took his old laptop with all his connections on it. He also reveals that he knows Julie is there so that he can help her run away from all this and get a new identity and live hidden somewhere miles away, but Luka corrects him, saying they want to find out who is responsible for killing all the people on their Greek island. Julie realises that running is the best option and tells Luka that maybe that's what they should do. He is fuming that she has changed her tune and tells her he is out before driving off in the tiny car, away from Julie and Ed.

As the episode comes to an end, Julie is sleeping at Damian's house when she wakes to find him holding a gun to her head. She isn't surprised, though, and when he asks where her gun is, it turns out Ed has it, and he is now pointing it at Damian, leaving them in a standoff.

Damian can see that Ed is shaking and not a natural killer like his mother, but as the episode cuts to black, a gun goes of,f and it is unclear who has been shot.

The second episode opens in a rainy London at a graphic novel and comic book art course. A glamorous woman walks in and the teacher asks if she is lost, but she says she's in the right place and says her graphic novel is going to be about Edward.

Meanwhile, back in Greece, we pick up where episode 1 left off and Edward has just introduced Kayla to Julie. Kayla asks why they have arrived all soaking wet, and Julie explains there are gunmen on the island who are trying to shoot them, and Kayla thinks she is joking. When she realises they are being deadly serious, she instructs the captain to head for Athens and takes Julie, Luka and Edward downstairs to get them all some dry clothes.

While she is finding Ezra's clothes for Luka and Edward, Julie tells Edward about being called by someone pretending to be her old boss, and that the target of her job was Kayla. Edward is stunned that his mum was ordered to kill his wife-to-be, and Luka is shocked to hear that Julie is an assassin.

At the prison in Libya, Jasper has been cornered by the Russian gang leader and told he now owes them for grassing to the prison guard. He is just glad not to be killed, but his heart sinks when the gang boss puts a knife in his hand and tells him that now he is going to be the one to kill their rival, Chi Chi.

On the yacht, Luka and Julie meet Ezra and get a tour of the boat, while Kayla asks Edward why gunmen would turn up on a tiny island.

On the tour, Ezra is showing off his 'wellbeing centre' on the yacht when Julie sees a picture of two men on the wall, and Ezra says one of them is his dad, and he owns the family business CGM, which stands for Cross Global Mining. Julie grills Kayla about the work she does for CGM, and she tells her that she works in the charity sector, but before she can get any closer to finding out more, Julie sees a jet ski coming towards the boat. While everyone else is in the yacht's bar, Julie is outside with her gun and looking for whoever was on the jet ski, which is now empty by the boat.

As she hunts the yacht, Julie seems to know who she is looking for, and calls for someone called Sean to come out of hiding... when they come face to face, both with guns pointing at one another, Julie says she could tell it was him by his aftershave. He's been sent there to kill her, and asks who she has upset to be worth so much to kill. Sean tells Julie that he would never shoot her and reveals that her situation is far worse than she could ever imagine and adds that he thinks Damian is dead.

Sean jokes that maybe they can have one last drink together before she disappears off the face of the earth, just as Edward walks in and asks who he is. Sean is clearly in a jovial mood, because he jokes he is Edward's dad, which Edward is shocked by and Julie is annoyed, saying he is just messing and isn't his father.

Sean tells Edward he is in 'waste disposal' like his mother, Julie points out Edward knows she is an assassin, and so Sean tells him he also kills people for a living. Before Edward can completely work out why this random man has ended up on the boat, Kayla comes in and they all make up a cover story about him being a friend of the family who was windsurfing when the shooting started, which Kayla seems to buy.

At the prison, Jasper is gathering the courage to kill Chi Chi as the gang leader ordered. Just as he is about to stab him in the back, one of the other gang members stops him and takes him to the leader. He tells Jasper that he has had an interesting call from someone called Aaron Cross and wants to know why he has said he will break Jasper out of jail. Jasper is thrilled that Aaron has said he will get him out, but his happiness is short-lived when the gang leader says he has to take him and his friend with him when he leaves. He asks how Jasper knows Mr Cross, and he explains he was head of IT for the CGM company, and then he came across something in his emails. He clams up when the gang leader asks what was in the emails and to get him to talk he knocks him to the ground and starts cutting his fingers off.

Back on the luxury yacht, Sean is chatting up Kayla and taking selfies with her, while Edward quietly tells his mum that he thinks Kayla has a right to know she is in danger. Julie disagrees and says they need to work out the whole story before sharing it, and that while she is there, Kayla is safe.

At dinner, Kayla quizzes Julie about her life in Greece as the alarm goes off and they realise Sean is nowhere to be found. Julie tells Edward to keep everyone in the dining room while she investigates. After turning off the alarm, she goes to find Sean as he starts shooting at her. She hides in the kitchens, but he finds her and without her gun, she has to think fast. She uses a cheese fork to distract him and hits him, making Sean drop his gun. She says she thought they were friends, and he says they are, but the contract on her has just tripled and he needs the money. Soon, they are fighting in the kitchen while Edward is left in the dining room trying to fend off everyone's awkward questions about where Julie and Sean have gone. Julie tells Sean she doesn't want to kill him, but he is adamant he wants the money and starts to strangle her. Just as it looks like she is about to die, she reaches the cheese fork and stabs him in the neck.

While everyone in the dining room goes to see what all the crashing is about, Julie uses Sean's lifeless finger to open his phone and text whoever hired Sean to tell them that the job is complete, throwing them off the scent that she's still alive.

As a bloodied Julie is standing over Sean's body, Ezra, Luka, Edward, and Kayla come in and are shocked by what they find, and Julie jokes that there are a few things she needs to explain.

In the prison, Jasper regains consciousness after having his fingers chopped off, and the gang leader says that now he might tell them what he read in the email. He tells them the word Chantaine, which doesn't mean anything to them, but as they're about to get angry, a guard comes in, shoots the gang members dead, and leads Jasper out of the jail.

On the yacht, Edward is trying to explain to Kayla about his mum being a hitwoman and the fact she was hired to kill her. Julie says Kayla needs to think fast about who might want her dead, but Kayla is adamant that she has never had a death threat in her life. Julie says the sooner they work out who is behind wanting them all dead, the sooner the Sean's of this world will stop coming after them and they can get on with their lives. Julie announces they should all go to Tirana in Albania - Edward is baffled by the turn in conversation until Julie says that is the last place she heard Damian - her handler - was living.

Meanwhile, Ezra is in his sauna making a hurried phone call telling the person on the other end of the phone to 'standdown' and that he wants 'her' gone. When he tries to get out of the sauna, he finds it is locked, and Julie appears at the window, telling him that he isn't as quiet on the phone as he thinks. As she grills Ezra about whether he is behind the order for Kayla's death, he won't answer, so she turns up the sauna to its maximum, just as Kayla and Edward walk in and find them.

Edward thinks they should let Ezra out before he roasts, but both Julie and Kayla think he is hiding something, and eventually he admits he said 'I want her gone' while on the phone to their lawyer Michael. Kayla is confused why he wants her gone, and he says he wants her out of the company, and she eventually lets him out the sauna.

Back at the prison, Jasper has been let out by the guard, who is on the phone to someone, who is offering him more money to go with Jasper when he is collected from outside the jail. Jasper tries to make the guard see that Aaron Cross is a powerful man who will kill them both for what they know when the helicopter comes to get them. The guard doesn't believe him at first, but then looks up Aaron Cross online and the men decide to run.

Luka finds Julie in the bar of the yacht, and she takes the chance to apologize to him for the fact all his friends and family have been killed because of her. He says he knows it isn't her fault, and that he doesn't want to go back home now, as everything he has ever known is gone.

In bed, Kayla asks Ed what he is thinking about and he says all the business trips his mother took when he was a child. She asks what he thought Julie did for a living and he explains he was always told she was a headhunter and they laugh.

They talk about the email that she got from Jasper (her dad's head of IT, who we know from the jail), and she tells Ed that the email told her that Jasper had found out something dark that could take down her dad's entire company and that he needed someone brave to help him do it. He said it came down to one word, 'Chantaine'. Once Kayla heads to the gym, Edward searches Chantaine online, but nothing comes up.

The episode moves to a huge white villa in France, where we finally meet Aaron Cross (played by Neighbours star Alan Dale for soap fans). Someone from his security company has come to see him, but he is cross that no one has found Jasper and hits the security man around the face, telling him he just wants him to feel as humiliated as he does with the fact that his company is giving him the runaround.

Back on the yacht, Kayla corners Ezra at breakfast and asks why he wanted her out. He says it was because charitable giving was costing the company too much and so he was trying to get the board to sack her. She seems to believe him, and says he doesn't need to sack her because she quits.

Elsewhere, Julie and Edward wrap Sean's body in plastic and throw him overboard... and Ed tells his mum he will have nightmares about this for the rest of his life. Julie seems to want to say something to Ed, and he tells her to just get on with wharever she has to ask, and she says she knows he is hiding something from Kayla, but he replies that he can't believe she, of all people, is trying to give him advice on his love life.

As they all agree to head to Damian's last known address when they dock, the epsiode returns to the art class in rainy London again and the glamorous mystery woman has finished her comic drawing, and when we see it on screen, it is a drawing of Edward finding out who is father is.

The Assassin is a gripping new crime thriller on Prime Video, that sees Bodyguard and The Durrells star Keeley Hawes play Julie, a retired assassin who is now living a quiet life on a secluded Greek island.

However, Julie's world is turned upside down when her estranged son Edward (The Good Doctor's Freddie Highmore) visits from England with some difficult questions. Soon, Julie finds her past catching up with her, and they are forced to flee the island and go on the run.

As mother and son battle for survival, the pair are confronted by a dark conspiracy and a threat that will destroy their relationship forever.

Here is everything that happened in The Assassin episode 1...

The episode opens in Bulgaria in 1994 as someone wearing all black and a balaclava comes out of a bathroom, flushing the toilet behind them. They set a timer on their watch, and as they come face to face with some guards protecting what looks like an abandoned building site, the figure shoots them dead. As the shooter then makes their way up into the building, they shoot and fight everyone in their path, killing guards and security men left, right and centre.

When the assassin finally comes to the top floor, they kill two more men before finally coming face to face with their leader, who they have all been protecting. The leader jokes that if they wanted a meeting so badly, then they should have called or text, but the assassin remains silent. The leader offers the shooter a bag full of cash, trying to tempt them into working for him, but the shooter just kills him, too, walking out and leaving the bag of cash behind.

Once everyone is dead, the shooter takes off their balaclava, and we can see it is a young woman called Julie. She calls someone called Damian on the phone and tells him the job is done, before the alarm she set on her watch goes off. Julie tells Damian she will call him back as she pulls a pregnancy test out of her pocket and swears under her breath as she sees it is positive.

The episode then flashes forward to 31 years later (the present day) in Greece, and Julie wakes up on a beach having drunk a bottle of whiskey. As she packs up her chair and walks off, a teenager hits her in the head with a football. She is cross, hot, and hungover, and challenges the kids to tell her who is responsible for hitting her, but when they don't reply, Julie kicks their ball into the sea.

Meanwhile, a man, Edward, is running through an airport and gets to his gate just as it is closing. He is reluctant to get on the plane, but eventually boards at the last moment.

Back in Greece, Julie gets steaks from the local butchers and is rude to the locals as she jumps the queue, before heading to the port to pick up Edward. They greet one another awkwardly and she struggles to be sympathetic when he tells her that the boat ride over from the mainland has made him feel queasy. As they head off on Julie's motorbike, Edward puts his arms around her so he doesn't fall off, but she tells him to hold the back, because 'he's not 10'.

As they arrive at Julie's house, hidden in the middle of nowhere, Edward goes to his room while she puts the steaks in the fridge. Julie tells him she bought them especially for him as he mentioned wanting to try them last time he was here... but he points out that was four years ago now, and he is now a vegan.

Julie's phone rings and she is shocked to hear Damian's voice on the phone for the first time in 10 years. She questions how he got her number, but he says it doesn't matter, and he has a job for her. She turns it down without even hearing what the job is, pointing out that she is retired now and hangs up.

The episode then moves to a prison in Libya, where a nervous Dutch man is thrown into a jail with gangs of other men who all sense he is an easy target. A man, who seems to have been waiting for him, warns off the other prisoners circling the newcomer and tells the Dutch man to follow him. He takes him to meet a gang leader who says he will look after him in prison, but in return, he needs to help him work his computer.

At Julie's house, she is having lunch with Edward in awkward silence. She tells him that they should go to the wedding on the island tomorrow, as everyone will be there, but Edward is put out that she would rather go to a stranger's wedding than spend time with her own son.

Julie is distracted after her phone call with Damian, but tells Edward she's there now if he wants to talk. He says there is something he has been meaning to ask her, tells her he has been looking into the story about how she met his father, and it doesn't add up because the pub she claims they met in didn't open until after he was born. Edward reminds his mum that he is a journalist, so if she is going to continue lying to him, she might want to be a bit more convincing.

Edward asks Julia what Anvil Assets is, and she says she has never heard of it. He tells her that on his 30th birthday, he got a letter making him a trustee in Anvil Assets and leaving him a significant amount of money, but no clue who might have left it to him. Edward points out that it must be his dad, but Julie tells him to drop it, as his father wasn't a good man. Edward tells her he knows she is still lying.

Julie is saved by her phone ringing, and it is Damian again, asking her to consider the job and that he will double her fees if she agrees to take it on. She reminds him that she is retired and asks if he has forgotten what happened last time. He is adamant that she is the woman for the job and triples her fee, and eventually she gives in and agrees.

As Damian sends the details of the target to Julie, she tells Edward she has to go as she is having trouble with her 'boyfriend' before heading in to locate her guns, which she has locked away under the floorboards.

Later that evening, Julie heads to some dunes and sets up to wait for her target, while Edward is left at her house to wander around. Once she has her target in sight, Julie is about to shoot when she realises something is off with the request. She calls the number that Damian called her on, and she speaks to him again, but says while he sounds like Damian, she knows it isn't him because of the way he is talking. The person on the other end of the phone says they can be whoever she wants them to be, and changes their voice to sound like her before hanging up.

Julie gets home and calls her old colleagues to see if anyone has heard from the real Damian, but they haven't.

Kayla, the woman Julie had been hired to kill, and her brother, Ezra, are on their luxury yacht, where they are talking about how she works for a charitable giving organisation, while he gets paid the big bucks working for their dad, Aaron Cross. As they talk, Kayla asks her brother what Chantaine is, and he seems spooked that she knows the name and asks her where she heard it. She says she asked him first, but he fobs her off, saying there are some things they're not meant to know.

At the prison, the Dutch man, who we now know is called Jasper, is working hard for the gang boss. He is horrified when he hears that they're planning to kill someone in a rival gang as they're 'taking their business'. Jasper tells a guard that this man, Chi Chi is about to be killed and wants to move prisons in return for the information. The guard agrees and he is relieved, but there is a sense that not everything is as it seems.

At the village wedding, Julie tells Edward she knows he has something to tell her and to just come out with it. He reluctantly tells her he is getting married. She assumes it is to a man, but Edward points out it is a woman and she congratulates him, taking his hand awkwardly.

Suddenly, someone sitting behind them is shot in the head, and chaos erupts as wedding guests all around them start being killed. Julie knows the shooter is there for her, and she works out they have five shots before the shooter has to reload. Once five shots are made, she makes Edward run out of the line of sight and uses herself to distract the shooter away from him.

Julie uses dead bodies as shields as the shooter tries to kill her, but she knows how this all works and manages to get into a wedding car and start driving towards where the shooter is hiding in the mountains. She drives the car and crashes it near the shooter on purpose, making it look like she is dead, but when he comes closer to make sure the job is done, she isn't in the car, and instead comes up behind him and smashes him over the head with a boulder.

Back at the wedding, there is carnage with dead bodies sprawled everywhere. Edward is still in his hiding place when his phone rings and it is Julie to tell him the shooter is dead.

At the prison, Jasper is waiting to be moved after telling the guard about who the gang were planning to kill, but out in the yard, he is horrified to see the guard talking to the gang leader, clearly in cahoots with him, and now telling him that he has snitched on him. He runs back to his cell and uses a phone hidden under a bed to call Mr Cross and demand to speak with him. He tells the person on the other end of the phone to remember one word 'Chantaine' and that he needs to get him out of prison as soon as possible, as he is about to be killed by the Russians.

Edward finds Julie in the mountains with the dead man, who Julie seems to know from when she was an assassin, while back at the wedding, everyone is crying over the massacred wedding party, when Interpol arrives looking for Julie.

The doctor who is helping the injured tells the man, Afonso, he wants to see his ID again, as he hasn't even heard from the mainland police yet, so Afonso just shoots him in the head. Everyone starts screaming again as more men in black get out of the car and start killing those who had survived the first shooting. Only one elderly man remains alive and Afonso asks him about the English woman. The old man tells him that she lives in the cottage at the top of the hill, but when he begs for help, Afonso shoots him, too. As the men in black drive away, thinking everyone at the wedding is dead, we see that Luka, Julie's friend from the butchers, is still alive and has been hiding behind the bar.

Meanwhile, back on the yacht, Kayla is grilling Ezra about Chantaine again, and he says he got an email, and Kayla says she did too - but neither of them knows who it was from. Ezra says he knows nothing more than she does, but that he asked Michael about it and he got really weird when he said the word Chantaine. He tells her he knows nothing, and Kayla walks off. But once she has gone, Ezra makes a call and asks why 'it hasn't happened yet' and that 'she is walking around without a clue, and it is too much'.

As they get home, covered in blood, Julie is looking for her gun while Edward demands to know what she is running around like a 'premenopausal James Bond'. She eventually gives in and tells him that she was an assassin and did bad things for money. But while Edward wants more answers, Julie is trying to pack and warn him that someone is coming for them. As Afonso and his men arrive at their cottage, Julie and Edward use a home video to distract them into thinking they're in the lounge, when really they're out front, making their escape on the motorbike.

As they make their getaway through the narrow streets of the village, Julie is stunned when they come across the wedding massacre, and stops for a moment to take in what she has caused. As the streets get narrower, the men are forced to abandon their car and chase the pair on foot, while they go to the harbour and jump in the water, with Luka following.

Eventually, they get to Kayla's fancy boat and climb on board, but Kayla doesn't seem to be too shocked to see Edward, and it turns out she is his fiancée. As Edward introduces his wife-to-be to his mum, Julie hides the fact that less than 24 hours ago, she was hired to kill her son's future wife.

The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3 is here, with two epsiodes to binge now, and the remaining 9 episodes of the 11-part teen romance drama releasing weekly.

The series has enjoyed incredible success over the last few seasons, with The Summer I Turned Pretty season 2 being one of the 10 most-watched seasons of any series ever on Prime Video. Joe Freeman (the son of actors Martin Freeman and Amanda Abbington) stars as 14-year-old Luke Ellis, who finds himself trapped within the mysterious facility. Weeds' lead Mary-Louise Parker plays the director of the sinister facility, and Shadow and Bone’s Ben Barnes is ex-cop Tim Jamieson.

Jimmy Doherty’s Big Bear Rescue, C4, 8 pm

Farmer-turned-wildlife conservationist Jimmy continues his mission to rehome polar bears, Arctic wolves and European brown bears. He builds a bespoke enclosure for the dozen wolves, but must take care as the pack’s dynamic has recently changed and there are power struggles within.

Live Aid at 40: When Rock ’n’ Roll Took on the World, BBC2, 9pm

The final instalment of this absorbing series tells the story of Live 8. Staged in July 2005, the global concert took place across nine countries including Russia and Japan, with headliners Coldplay, Robbie Williams, Mariah Carey and U2. One of the most poignant sets was from Madonna, as she was joined on stage by famine survivor Birhan Woldu. In this episode, Birhan, who became a symbol of the Ethiopian crisis after featuring in a 1985 news report as a starving child, is among the contributors giving exclusive interviews as they reflect on Live 8, its mission and its legacy.

Summer Night Concert from Vienna, BBC4, 8 pm

This year’s concert, recorded last month at Schönbrunn Palace, features the Vienna Boys choir, the Vienna Philharmonic and tenor Piotr Beczala, with conductor Tugan Sokhiev. The varied programme includes pieces from Bizet’s "Carmen" and Mascagni’s "Cavalleria rusticana", plus "Nessun Dorma" from Puccini’s "Turandot".

The latest Steven King adaptation hits screens on Sunday, July 13 when The Institute premieres, and we'll help you figure on how to watch it.

The Institute is about a mysterious facility and organization that collects, houses and experiments on children with unusual powers. In the midst of this a former police officer investigates the mystery as a new boy is brought into the fold.

A retelling of King's well-received 2019 novel of the same name, the series stars newcomer Joe Freeman as well as Ben Barnes and Mary-Louise Parker.

I'm not talking about your standard fare available freely on Prime Video to anyone who subscribes to Amazon Prime, but its listing of third-party hits like older movies, blockbusters and lesser-seen indie films.

For example Wicked is discounted in the UK, and you can now buy it digitally for £6.99, down from its previous price of £13.99. Find it here if you've been waiting to find a way to watch 2024's smash hit... but don't, because I've got something much better for you.

A few hidden gems from the last few years are included in the Prime Day movie sales, some of which I've seen and would highly recommend, and some of which I haven't but have heard lots of buzz about. So if you've been looking for a new movie night watch, here are some discounted rentals or purchases on lesser-seen movies.

1. Black Bag

First up is Steve Soderbergh's new spy movie from earlier in the year, which was a gripping story yet sadly underperformed at the box office. Now it's your time to catch up though.

Black Bag stars Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett as a married spy couple. When she becomes a suspect for treason, he's forced to work out whether she's actually a traitor to the country or if some fouler work is at play.

In our Black Bag review we commended the movie's focus on dramatic conversations and plot turns over its reliance on action and chases, with an engaging plot and svelte runtime.

US viewers can now rent Black Bag for $5.99, down from its previous price of $9.99, and you can find its Amazon Video listing here. In the UK you can rent it for £1.99, down from £15.99, or buy it for £6.99, down from £19.99, and you can find its Amazon Video listing here.

2. William Tell

I was hoping to watch this 2024 movie but it barely came out in any cinemas in my country so I couldn't get to it. So I'm looking forward to watching it via this deal.

William Tell is based on the famous play and piece of music, and it's a medieval action movie about the 12th Century clash between peaceful Swiss villagers and invading Austrians, with the defenders led by a legendary bowman called William Tell.

Claes Bang stars as the titular hero with a cast that's rounded out by Connor Swindells, Rafe Spall, Emily Beecham, Jonathan Pryce and Ben Kingsley.

In the US you can rent William Tell for $9.99, down from $5.99, or buy it for $14.99, down from $19.99, and you can find its Amazon Video listing here. 3. 65

I'm not going to pretend that 65 is a great film, but it had the kind of dumb dino fun that I felt Jurassic World Rebirth was missing and so I've been thinking about rewatching it recently.

The movie stars Adam Driver as a space traveller who finds himself stranded on Earth... 65 million years ago. Hence the name.

Cue an hour and a half of dinosaur scares, many-toothed dangers and some stupid but hilarious discoveries to kick off a ticking clock element.

If you live in the US, 65 can be rented for $3.99 down from $4.49, or bought for $7.99 down from $14.99, and here's the Amazon Video listing page. In the UK you can buy it for £3.99, down from £7.99 (there's no rental deal) and the Amazon Video listing page is here.

4. The Thicket

Here's another movie I wanted to watch, but it never even released outside the US.

The Thicket stars Peter Dinklage, Levon Hawke, Juliette Lewis and Esmé Creed-Miles, as well as Metallica frontman James Hetfield, and it's a Western thriller.

The story is about a bounty hunter (Dinklage) who creates a band of fighters to take down a killer, however his rag-tag group are all unlikely in different ways.

There's no US discount on The Thicket because it's on Prime Video anyway there. In the UK it's available to rent for £1.99, down from £4.49, or buy for £3.99, down from £9.99, and you can find it listed on Amazon Video here.

5. Caddo Lake

I watched Caddo Lake on a flight but it was good enough that I want to rewatch it at ground level so I can properly work out what was going on.

The movie is set at the titular lake, which straddles Texas and Louisiana, and it features Maze Runner star Dylan O'Brien in the main role.

Caddo Lake is about the investigation into a disappeared 8-year-old girl, which isn't the first such vanishing for her family. As people try to find her, it becomes clear that there's something very weird happening out in the woods and swamps.

You can't rent or buy Caddo Lake on Amazon Video in the US but it is on Max. In the UK you can't rent it but you can buy it: £3.99, down from £9.99, and you can find its Amazon Video listing here.

I published my full Roku Streaming Stick review less than a week ago (at the time of writing), and already this affordable streaming stick has seen a discount thanks to Prime Day.

Amazon's 2025 Prime Day runs from Tuesday, July 8 and Friday, July 11 and loads of different kind of products have been discounted including gadgets like streaming sticks. I've already done a round-up of Prime Day Fire TV stick deals but the Roku one is more surprising.

The Roku Streaming Stick is the new entertainment dongle from Californian company Roku, which is known for its affordable tech. It was released on May in the US but only June in the UK.

Despite being brand-new on the scene, the Roku Streaming Stick is enjoying $10 off for Prime Video, a deal which you can find below.

Not in the US? There are no Prime Video deals on the new Roku Streaming Sticks but you can find standard prices at the bottom of this article.

Should you buy the discounted Roku Streaming Stick?

In my review of the Roku Streaming Stick (I'm still working on my Plus review) I noted that it's probably the best streaming dongle for people who want to save money. Not only is it cheap by default (before sales) but it gives you access to lots of free content to stream, especially from The Roku Channel.

The dongle has all the setbacks that cheap tech like this normally does: it misses a few features (primarily support for 4K) and it can be a little stuttery to use at times.

Personally, the biggest deciding factor for buying is the main menu of this versus the Amazon Fire TV Stick. Streaming tech from Amazon has a very busy and cluttered interface, throwing loads of ads, streaming services and show recommendations at you. It can be useful for an indecisive streamer but overwhelming at the same time; Roku OS is clean and easy to use.

One thing to note: Roku's soundbar is also discounted which has access to the company's streaming operating system built in. Read more in my article on Prime Day soundbar deals.

It's currently Prime Day over on Amazon (Tuesday, July 8 until Friday, July 11) which means loads of discounts on... basically everything. The one exception is, as per usual, on streaming subscriptions, but that's okay because you don't need to pay to test these.

Amazon's streaming service Prime Video lets you subscribe to additional video bundles, be they from big names like Apple TV Plus and Paramount Plus or smaller broadcasters, known as Prime Video channels. We see deals on these around Black Friday, bringing a subscription down to mere pennies for your first few months, but in the past we haven't seen these around Prime Day.

However all year around, not just during sales seasons, most Prime Video channels let you subscribe for a month without paying (30 days, to be exact). This isn't a Prime Day deal by any stretch of the imagination but if you're in a money-saving mood, it's worth knowing about.

These Prime Video channel subscriptions aren't totally free, because you still need to pay for Amazon Prime to use the subscription service in the first place, but if you already pay for this (and looking at the subscriber figures, you probably do!) then you don't have to pay anything extra (well, until the month is up and you're automatically enrolled into your first month of the full fare).

Looking at the current Prime Video channel list, plenty of interesting originals are available to watch for absolutely nothing thanks to these taster months. The Apple TV Plus free trial lets you watch recent movie Fountain of Youth, smash hit Severance and newly-returning Foundation without paying while Paramount Plus is there with the likes of Mobland, Landman, various Star Trek movies and South Park.

The full list varies by region but in the UK I can also see the likes of MGM Plus (loads of hit movies, and some new Originals), Shudder (for cult horror), Hayu (reality) BFI Player and Mubi (both arts, international and indie) and absolutely loads more. From my research, US viewers have a much wider selection of channels besides these.

So if you've been perusing the Prime Day DVD deals in order to find something new to watch, you don't need to think about spending any extra money because these free trials are all out there right now.

Prime Video has added Ballard, a spin-off from its 100% Rotten Tomatoes rated crime drama Bosch: Legacy.

The 10-part series, added today (Wednesday, July 8) on the streaming service, sees Maggie Q reprising her role as LAPD cop Renée Ballard, who heads up a new cold-case division made up of reserves and volunteers that's confined to the station basement.

But while dealing with long-forgotten crimes, Renée and her team also uncover a serial killer who remains an active threat, and stumble across a conspiracy within the force.

"It's a very different show from Bosch: Legacy," says Maggie Q. "It has high-octane moments and a lot of good detective work, but it's shot at the beach in Malibu. I know this sounds ridiculous, but I haven't seen a show shot like this since Baywatch. Renée lives in Malibu, and she goes home to the beach. That's her peace among the dark underbelly of her work. It's an interesting juxtaposition."

Among the cast is Amy Hill as Tutu, Renée's fiery grandma, while her squad includes Michael Mosley as reserve officer Ted, Rebecca Field as volunteer Colleen, Victoria Moroles as legal intern Martina, and Courtney Taylor as Samira, an ex-cop who returns to the force at Renée’s behest.

There's great news for fans of Bosch: Legacy, which ended after three seasons, because Titus Welliver once again plays the retired detective in Ballard. "Maggie and I had never met each other before Bosch: Legacy, but the chemistry was there, it really worked,” says Titus Welliver.

"Harry becomes kind of a mentor to her, and has paternal feelings for her. It’s a beautifully realised relationship."

Bosch Legacy ran for three seasons on Prime Video between 2022 and 2025, while that series was a contiunation of Bosch, which ran for seven seasons between 2014 and 2021. The shows are based on the books by Michael Connelly. Talking about the books, Maggie Q told Amazon: "Michael really does create this world and suck you in. I remember reading the books and really having this vision in my mind, that I prayed we were going to realize in this show

"When we were filming, what was materializing was what I had in my mind from the books. I hope fans of the books see that and appreciate that, but realize with an adaptation, you also have to take some creative license."

Welcome to The Institute, where imprisoned children are undergoing terrifying experiments — but one plucky teen is determined to fight back!

The Institute is a chilling eight-part adaptation of Stephen King’s 2019 acclaimed sci-fi horror novel, and with its supernatural themes, sinister secrets and a brave band of kids fighting dark forces, it's the perfect watch ahead of Stranger Things season five.

“For me, there’s no better writer than Stephen King, so just to get an audition was so exciting!" Joe tells What to Watch in an exclusive chat. “This show is the perfect balance of fun with that classic Stephen King disturbing psychological thriller element, but not in a jumpy way, it’s just very uncomfortable.

“I play Luke Ellis and he’s certainly smarter than your average Joe. He wants to do what’s best for himself, but he also can’t help but care about everyone else in his life and never wants to leave anyone behind. That helps when he arrives at The Institute because he’s able to band the other kids together. You root for them in there.

“One of the most challenging aspects of filming, though, was Luke’s telekinesis. As soon as the cameras were rolling, that’s when I found it difficult because who knows how to behave with telekinesis? That’s not something I have experience in!”

“I didn’t know this book beforehand, but I had filmed a Stephen King series called Mr. Mercedes [2017-19] and loved the idea of working with director Jack Bender again,” says Mary-Louise. “Jack also posed this question that I thought was kind of amazing: 'How far would you go to prevent the apocalypse?’

“That’s how my character justifies the horrendous things she does, but she’s fuelled by loneliness and paranoia, and she has an inner sense of decay. She’s clinging to whatever humanity she has left, but she's so hyper-aware of the logistics of her job. You think there’d be a lot of guilt, but I don’t think she goes there very often.

“I’m not a horror fan at all, though. I’m already afraid, so I don’t want to make it worse! I remember one day on set, I needed somewhere to sit during a break, so they took me into a dark room filled with beds with IVs hanging down. The room just felt jaundiced and diseased. I was like, ‘I'll stand in the hall!’”

“Making a contribution to the Stephen King filmic canon is an exciting bucket list thing for me,” smiles Ben. “I’ve been assured that he loves the series, too, so I feel proud of that. “He writes in so many genres, but they all have a connective tissue of hope, humanity and fighting against unchecked authoritarian systems. The Institute has all that, plus a gripping, simmering tension, with a message of how important it is to stand up for what is right.

“My character, Tim, is an ex-cop who has been through some traumatic experiences and is carrying a lot of shame. He’s trying to find some peace and solitude, but ends up in a small town near this mysterious and terrifying institute. No one quite knows what it is or does, but Tim finds a trail and he has a fierce trigger when he smells injustice.”

They're not names you'd immediately think of as a double act. But Idris Elba and John Cena got on so well on the set of James Gunn's The Suicide Squad (2021) that they decided they wanted to work together again. It was just a matter of finding the right script to show off their chemistry — the deadpan Elba versus the goofy Cena — and it didn’t take too long.

The result is Heads Of State, which has landed on Prime Video today (Wednesday, July 2), and it has the makings of the start of a longer-running partnership.

They play the leaders of two of the world’s most powerful nations. UK Prime Minister Sam Clarke (Elba) is old-school, wanting to deliver results for his country instead of trying to win its affection, while super-friendly US President Will Derringer (Cena), is still in the honeymoon period of his tenure and adored by voters.

It's nothing to do with politics: as one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, he spent years keeping them entertained. With a joint initiative on the horizon, they’re smiling for the cameras, but the truth rears its ugly head at a press conference, when it becomes patently obvious they can’t stand the sight of each other.

Putting their animosity aside, they agree to fly on Air Force One together, but are shot down by enemy troops and presumed dead. On the run, and trying to figure out who was behind the attempted assassination, they find help in the shape of MI6 agent Noel Bisset (Priyanka Chopra-Jones), who’s rather useful when it comes to dodging bullets, kicking ass — and dealing with the two leaders having their own asses kicked in the process.

Bloodsport and Peacemaker they aren’t, but the banter that made Elba and Cena so watchable and produced most of the laughs in The Suicide Squad is still very much intact, alongside the bromance that made them even more appealing both then and now. With a plot that, even on paper, is silly to the point of ridiculous, it’s clear that Heads Of State is a vehicle designed for their particular style of double act and, based on the way they make the film their own, they could easily be carving out a niche for themselves as the action-packed buddies of the 2020s.

Cena, of course, has become something of a regular in Amazon comedies. Last year saw him partnering Awkwafina in Paul Feig’s Jackpot! and then playing alongside Zac Efron in Ricky Stanicky. Both films received fair to middling receptions but just about every review for Stanicky, a film about a group of men who create an imaginary friend as an excuse to get out of things they don’t want to do, mentioned Cena’s full-throttle performance as the film’s biggest selling point. He was a total scene stealer.

Amazon also dipped their toe in buddy waters last year with Brothers, a comedy road trip that paired Josh Brolin and Peter Dinklage as mismatched twins. Trying his utmost to go straight after time in jail, Brolin finds himself reluctantly pulled back into Dinklage’s life of crime to pull off what could be their biggest job ever. It was another instance of the two leads carrying the film on their shoulders, helped by the fact that the pair could feasibly be brothers. Their laid-back on-screen chemistry was a definite bonus and Dinklage, especially, displayed a talent for irresistible mischief.

But the film’s habit of leaning too heavily on Twins (1988), which paired Arnie Schwarzenegger and Danny De Vito, was its biggest own goal and there was barely a whiff of a Brolin/Dinklage reunion on the cards.

Yet buddy comedies, especially of the action variety, were at their peak in the 1980s and early 1990s. It started in explosive style with 48 Hours (1982), which saw Nick Nolte as a hard-boiled cop forced to work with Eddie Murphy’s wise-cracking criminal on parole to help him track down a killer. It’s still regarded as the ultimate buddy action movie, but had run out of steam by the time the sequel arrived in 1990 and one of the most memorable action comedy pairings of all time had already replaced it. In Richard Donner’s Lethal Weapon (1987), Mel Gibson’s suicidal Riggs and Danny Glover’s rule-driven Murtaugh, were a match loved so much by critics and audiences alike that they spawned a franchise of their own that lasted for another three films.

Buddy comedies were never quite the same again.

If Elba and Cena are aiming to be the action comedy buddies for the 2020s, they’ll need to keep their eyes on another double act. We knew what to expect from Deadpool And Wolverine (2024) when it was released, courtesy of previous MCU movies and the ongoing social media banter between Reynolds and Jackman.

While many saw the film as a big-budget piece of fan service, it still scored 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, and the chemistry between the two actors was undeniable.

Rumors are still swirling about a possible sequel but, with no sign of an announcement at the moment, it leaves the door open for another pairing to fill the void. Elba and Cena, anybody?

There are some great options for what to watch in movie theaters this weekend — I particularly enjoyed F1: The Movie but M3GAN 2.0 is also new — or at home, including my five favorite movies of 2025 so far. But if there’s one movie that you should absolutely stream this weekend it is Charlie Chaplin’s The Gold Rush, which celebrates its 100th birthday on June 26.

Charlie Chaplin is one of the most iconic figures in movie history, best known for his character simply known as the Little Tramp. While also responsible for undisputed classics like The Kid, City Lights and Modern Times, The Gold Rush is arguably Chaplin’s best movie featuring some of his most iconic moments.

And you can stream The Gold Rush right now for free on Prime Video, or on subscription streaming services Max or The Criterion Channel. The movie is also streaming on Prime Video in the UK, though a subscription is required.

The Gold Rush sees the Little Tramp head to the snowy Klondike where he seeks his fortune in the hidden gold mines. However, before he can do that he must overcome the harsh weather, dangerous animals, other prospectors and loneliness.

Even if you’ve never seen The Gold Rush, you may be at least casually familiar with some of its most iconic bits. The most well known are the dancing bread rolls and Chaplin using shoe laces as a substitute for spaghetti. But there’s plenty more humor and beauty in the movie that is absolutely worth discovering.

If you’re really lucky, maybe there is a special screening of The Gold Rush at a local movie theater in your area on June 26, as screenings are taking place across the world to honor the movie’s 100th birthday. Yet for all my internet sleuthing, I could only find one confirmed screening in the US, at the Egyptian Theater in Los Angeles, where The Gold Rush was first shown on June 26, 1925. But thankfully The Gold Rush is readily available on streaming for the rest of us.

Now you might be asking, “what’s so great about watching a silent movie?” Watching a silent movie is truly a different experience than watching a movie today. Because you can’t just listen to the dialogue as you scroll on your phone and get the gist of the plot, you have to pay attention to what’s on the screen to understand. And Chaplin was a master storyteller in this format, serving as writer, director and editor on The Gold Rush.

I promise if you give your time and attention to The Gold Rush, you won’t be disappointed.

Malice is a tense Prime Video thriller series set in London and Greece starring comedian and actor Jack Whitehall. He plays Adam Healey, a charming ‘manny’ who infiltrates a brash, wealthy family in order to destroy them. The X-Files’ David Duchovny plays Jamie Tanner, the patriarch of the family, while Game of Thrones star Carice van Houten is his wife, Nat. But why does Adam hate the Tanners so much?

David is rich father Jamie Tanner in Malice. He’s best known for playing Fox Mulder in The X Files and has also been in Californication, Aquarius, Things We Lost in the Fire, Red Shoe Diaries and The Sympathizer.

Malice was filmed in London and on the island of Paros, Greece, in 2025.

Prime Video has added Countdown, a new thriller series about the race to stop a major nuclear terrorist attack, boasting an all-star cast and sounding very much like one for fans of shows like Jack Ryan.

The Boys actor Jensen Ackles stars as maverick LAPD detective Mark Meachum, who is undercover in a prison when he is recruited to join a secret task force by Special Agent Nathan Blythe (Grey’s Anatomy star Eric Dane).

Assembled in the wake of the murder of a Department of Homeland Secutiry officer, the crack team is made up of tech whizz Evan Shepherd (Violett Beane); Luke Finau (Uli Latukefu) who works in the LAPD’s gangs and narcotics division; terrorism expert and FBI agent Keyonte Bell (Elliot Knight); and DEA special agent Amber Oliveras (Jessica Camacho) who works undercover with drug dealers.

Teasing the plot, the makers say: "When an officer with the Department of Homeland Security is murdered in broad daylight, LAPD detective Mark Meachum is recruited to a secret task force, alongside undercover agents from all branches of law enforcement, to investigate.

"But the hunt for the killer soon uncovers a plot far more sinister than anyone could have imagined, kicking off a race against time to save a city of millions."

Creator Derek Haas, the man behind Chicago Fire and its spin-offs, loved the group element to the story.

"It's like an all-star team, with people from a bunch of different agencies," he says. "Putting this disparate group together and then emphasising different strengths is what makes the show."

At the heart of the plot is LAPD detective Mark Meachum, and Jensen Ackles explains that his character is something of a loose cannon. "Mark is a wrong-side-of-the-tracks kind of guy. He takes risks most people wouldn’t, so there's some full-on action."

However, there's a love-hate spark between Mark and Amber that could develop into romance. It all makes for an intriguing-sounding thriller.

Is Countdown worth a watch?

If you love thrillers like Jack Ryan and Reacher, then this certainly sounds like one for your watchlist. The trailer promises plenty of thrills and spills as the team attempts to prevent a weapon of mass destruction from hitting LA. It also has great credentials coming from the creator of Chicago Fire.

No wonder Cady Sinclair Eastman (Emily Alyn Lind) wanted to forget how Summer 16 ended. When the oldest Sinclair grandchild finally regains all her memories in the We Were Liars finale, everything about Summer 17 shifts into a new light.

Nothing during the present timeline is as it seems because not only did the Liars set the main Beechwood house on fire, but there are multiple deaths that Cady has buried deep because the pain was too raw. Cady is the only surviving Liar and has spent the vacation hanging out with ghosts.

Recounting the events of the night the Liars committed arson takes several attempts as Johnny (Joseph Zada), Mirren (Esther McGregeor), and Gat (Shubham Maheshwari) are still reluctant to tell Cady the deadly truth. They wanted to burn Clairmont to the ground as a way to bring the family back together without the material objects coming between them. But what they couldn’t foresee was how terrible their plan was.

Setting the fire

In the flashback to Summer 16, Cady is serious about burning Clairmont and its contents. Cady thinks this purification can’t make things worse for their family (if only she knew!). The group comes up with a cover story: when they woke up at the Cuddledown house, Clairmont was already on fire, and it was too late.

Johnny mentions they “don’t know how to do arson,” but Cady thinks they can use the fuel from the boathouse and each take a different section of the house, with Gat getting the boat to be their getaway driver. Cady takes the ground floor, Mirren wants the east wing, and Johnny will set fire to the attic. When the clock strikes 12, they will all light a match and get out.

A flash of them celebrating depicts the perfect version of this plan. It has worked as the moms are no longer fighting, and Gat was invited back. Cady is briefly satisfied until she can’t think of a logical reason why she was in the water.

The truth

In the present, Cady overhears Mirren saying to Johnny and Gat that Cady will remember everything soon. The truth is, the trio doesn’t know how she got in the water.

Cady devises a way to beat the “pain dragon” that makes her mind short-circuit whenever someone tells her what happened. They will play “Trigger Trauma Scrabble” using words related to that night. It is a play-by-play of how they set the fire, showing Cady running out of the house and then hearing the sound of the dogs barking from inside.

When Cady ran to save Eleanor and Franklin, the room they were in was blocked. Falling debris caused Cady’s head injury, and she went into the water to put out her flaming dress. Cady is understandably bereft at the incredibly upsetting reveal.

On the beach, Cady finds Harris and says sorry for what happened. Cady thinks Harris is talking about the dogs when he refers to them as heroic, and he mentions the faulty wiring and gas main as the source of the fire. Harris gives Cady an early 18th birthday present: the black pearl necklace. Cady tells the Liars she thinks Harris knows the truth.

The whole truth

Cady still doesn’t know why none of them reached out this year, telling the Liars she is strong enough to know her own story. It is time to know everything. Gat ran inside to find Cady, as she didn’t come out when she meant to. Mirren saved the painting her mother had destroyed and was secretly renovating, but she couldn’t save herself. Johnny didn’t even light his match, and the smoke was already so thick from below.

When Cady ran out of the house, her dress was on fire, but it was the gas line exploding that threw her into the water. “Turns out we really didn’t know how to do arson,” Johnny says.

A flash of moments from the summer reveals Cady has been alone and not with the Liars. Or rather, no one else can see the Liars because they aren’t figments of her imagination but ghosts. Each of the Liars appears to Cady separately, giving each other closure and an emotional resolution.

When Cady talks to Gat, she confesses that she took so long in the house because she went to grab the black pearls. Cady can’t explain why, but she just had to have them. Gat won’t let her blame herself for his death, as he didn’t stick to the plan.

Cady tries to return the pearls to Harris, but he refuses. Harris knows what she did, but her aunts, mother, and cousins believe the version where Cady is a hero who tried to save the others. Cady needs to tell a Time Magazine reporter this because Harris wants Cady to be the new face of the family.

Cady makes a choice

On the first anniversary of the fire, Bess (Candice King) asks Carrie (Mamie Gummer) if this is punishment for what they did the summer Bess was 16, but if that is the case, then why was Penny (Caitlin Fitzgerald) spared? She doesn’t elaborate, but there is a prequel novel by E. Lockhart called Family of Liars.

Ed (Rahul Koli) arrives during the photo shoot for the Time profile as he is back with Carrie. Harris invites him to be in the photo, but Ed declines. Cady is late, but dressed to match everyone else. However, she is wearing the beads Gat gave her, not the Sinclair pearls. Cady refuses to play the Harris Sinclair “strength of character” game. Instead, she chooses to drive the boat and throw the pearls overboard.

There was another goodbye as Cady parted ways with her beloved cousins and Gat. While she might no longer see them, they will always be with her. However, one final scene reveals this might not be the end. Earlier, it looked like Carrie was talking to herself about Harris’ declining health. However, when she goes to grab a pill before leaving Beachwood, Johnny is still there. Carrie thought he had left; Johnny doesn’t think he can.

Cady isn’t the only one who can see ghosts, and this island might no longer be a fairy tale destination, but there is still magic. Liars forever!

After a summer of secrets coming to light, We Were Liars episode 7 reveals what happened in the lead-up to Cady’s (Emily Alyn Lind) accident. The catastrophic event was so devastating that Cady still can’t remember everything before she was found washed up on the beach, but she is getting closer to the truth.

At the heart of the discontent during Summer 16 is the games the mothers — Penny (Caitlin FitzGerald), Carrie (Mamie Gummer) and Bess (Candice King) — continue to play as they stab each other in the back for a bigger slice of the Sinclair family inheritance. However, Cady, Johnny (Joseph Zada) and Mirren (Esther McGregor) refuse to join in with their petty antics.

When Cady confronts Harris (David Morse) about his racist views, an accident allows The Liars to spend time on Beechwood alone. Gat (Shubham Maheshwari) returns, and together they devise a plan to end the inheritance madness.

Vying for Harris Sinclair’s attention

Back in Summer 16, Cady is moping about thinking of Gat. Penny tells her daughter to get it together as the family dinner is the last opportunity to influence Harris before he revises his will. The Liars defying the recent Lemon Hunt rattled the mothers, who each want their child to be on their best behavior.

The first disapproving comment from Harris comes when Bess (Candice King) says her disgraced husband took the twins (as well as Carrie’s other son, Will) to horse camp. Harris mentions the criminal activity and bad judgment of character, immediately putting Bess on the defensive.

Bess reveals that Blake’s mother phoned her to tell her about the video of Johnny assaulting another teen. Bess also has dirt on Penny as she brings up the fixer that Penny has added to her divorce team, suggesting her sister has something to hide.

In return, Carrie (Mamie Gummer) brings up the scratches on Bess’ back that she got from having sex with Salty Dan (Tim Rozon) at the tennis court earlier that day. The dogs bark from the other room, and Penny is sent to calm them down. While Penny laces their food with their anxiety medication, she tells Cady to “stay the course” while Bess and Carrie destroy each other.

The Liars refuse to play the game

Cady has other plans. Rather than turn an anecdote about missing her grandmother into point scoring, Cady brings up that lemons symbolize colonization, which she learned from Gat. “That boy” is how Harris angrily refers to Gat when Cady says she wants to travel with Gat next summer.

Another source of contention occurs when Johnny realizes that Harris made Carrie choose between covering up Johnny’s crime and getting married to the man she loves. Mirren thinks that Harris is making everyone act crazy, causing Harris to tell them all that the inheritance is no longer in play. They will each get what they have earned, and it seems like no one will be named heir to Beechwood.

A bloody confrontation

Cady follows Harris outside and calls him out for not liking Gat or Ed (Rahul Koli). Harris claims he has high standards. “White standards?” Cady responds. She points out that they would ruin his perfect blonde family portrait. Harris rejects the notion that he is a racist, but he slips on the stairs and hits his head. The emergency helicopter at the end of episode 6 was for Harris, not Cady.

On a happier note, Gat did make it back to Beechwood, and everyone is thrilled to see him. Cady sent the entire staff home because of everything they had dealt with that day, meaning for the first time ever, they have the whole island to themselves.

First, they clean up the mess left from the big dinner, and while they are doing this, Cady sneaks off to look for the will in Harris’ office (as her mother instructed). Outside, Cady talks to Gat about why he came back. He says that he loves Beechwood. Cady worries that reality has seeped into their idyllic paradise, but she sees Gat now in a way she hadn’t before.

Gat writes “Never surrender to the devil you know best” on the back of Cady’s hands, matching what was written the night of her accident.

Inside, Johnny is recreating the Tom Cruise dance scene from Risky Business using one of the ivory elephants as a microphone. Johnny slips and accidentally smashes the elephant (worth $100,000). Mirren walks in and smashes the other one, saying it is symbolic, like the much shorter haircut she has just given herself.

The Liars want to make a statement

Penny phones with an update that Harris has a concussion and needed a few stitches, but he also needs to be transferred to Boston due to abnormalities on his CT that aren’t from the fall. The teens wonder if this is why he has been acting so erratically. However, Gat thinks Harris has always been like this.

Cady calls Harris a “racist piece of s***” and thinks it's way too late to impact his views. They wonder if their mothers are so screwed up because Harris has been playing inheritance games for a long time. Cady then reveals she found the will.

Outside by the fire, Cady tells her cousins that Bess gets the Boston house, and Carrie and Penny get a sizable quarterly stipend as long as neither remarries. Cady throws the will on the fire and doesn’t tell The Liars that Beechwood is bequeathed to Cady.

Johnny suggests they trash the house and crash Harris’ boat to give a message. Cady thinks whatever they do, Harris will cover up, but maybe they should do something bigger, like get rid of all the material things, as their moms need a lesson.

An image of Clairmont in Summer 16 cuts to Cady in the present. “There was a fire. I remember it now. We burned this place to the ground,” Cady tells Mirren and Johnny.

Summers on Beechwood Island are marked by familiar events like Father’s Day and the Fourth of July, but the Sinclairs also celebrate unique traditions. As shown in We Were Liars episode 6, one such annual extravaganza is Tipper’s Lemon Hunt, which goes ahead even after her untimely death. However, Harris (David Morse) ups the stakes, making his daughters more competitive than ever.

In the present, Gat (Shubham Maheshwari) and Cady (Emily Alyn Lind) spend the day together on Martha’s Vineyard as Cady defies her mother, Penny’s (Caitlin FitzGerald), orders to stay in her room. But the perfect date is not what it seems, and Cady is concerned about her mental health.

Cady also remembers more from Summer 16, including that Gat left the island. What made him return?

Looking for answers

In Summer 17, Gat and Cady are basking in their post-coital glow, but Cady’s questions about the previous year are a reality check. She wants to know if Harris scared Gat away: is this why he didn’t visit? Before discussing this further, a furious Penny orders Cady to return to Clairmont. Penny grounds Cady as one of Penny’s friends saw Cady jump off Sunset Bluff, which is incredibly dangerous.

Cady explains she was trying to trigger memories because Penny won’t tell her what happened. However, Penny told Cady the truth in the hospital. Every time, Cady would have “an episode” and not remember when she woke up again. “It is your own broken brain you’re raging against,” Penny tells her daughter.

Rather than listen to her mom, Cady decides to take the boat to Martha’s Vineyard to use the internet there because Google won’t gaslight her; Gat agrees to go with her.

A Lemon Hunt surprise

In Summer 16, tension simmers between the different generations. Harris requests to see Gat, asking what his intentions are with Cady, with the motive to get Gat away from his oldest grandchild, Cady. Harris has another surprise for Gat: his mother, Maya (Karen David), is there.

Harris hasn’t managed his goal, as Gat and Cady are going strong in Summer 17. But when Cady looks for more about her accident online, she sees flashes of the past, and another migraine is coming on. Gat catches her, saying they should look this up when she feels better. For now, ice cream and kisses are an antidote as they enjoy their first real date. Cady wonders if her mother is right that she is losing her mind, but Gat thinks she just needs more time to heal.

They return to talking about Summer 16, with Gat saying his mother’s arrival meant seeing Beechwood through her eyes. Maya can’t quite believe the pomp and circumstance on display. Gat says this isn’t a regular Tuesday, but what follows surprises the entire family.

The Lemon Hunt is similar to an egg hunt at Easter. In the past, the person with the most lemons (of 200 hidden) won a bookstore gift card, and the one who found the single lime was given fudge as the prize. Harris has changed Tipper’s rules, and the lemon champion will win the deed to the Boston house. The person who finds the lime will be named the sole recipient of Beechwood when Harris dies. Not a regular Tuesday.

Stiff competition

Each of the moms desperately wants to win the prizes on offer. Gat is one of the only people not running around the island. He tells his mother he found the lime in Summer 8, but Harris said there must have been cheating and split the fudge with Johnny. On Beechwood, Gat cannot win. Maya calls Beechwood “Knives Out meets Get Out,” and is disturbed by Gat’s code-switching. However, Gat doesn’t care because Cady is here.

Meanwhile, the Sinclairs do what they can to win. Penny brings up Salty Dan (Tim Rozon) in front of Carrie, who didn’t know about this dalliance. They all turn on each other, with Carrie’s addiction getting made fun of. Bess and Penny claim they are happy and know exactly who they are before it descends into teary and shouting chaos, with Gat witnessing the embarrassing mess.

Gat then sees Harris locking the lime in his desk drawer; the Sinclair patriarch had zero intention of bequeathing the island to anyone. The rest of The Liars argue about lemons and secrets, with Gat coming upon this scene and telling them they are like their moms. This comparison snaps the trio back to reality, and they say sorry to each other. Gat reveals he has the lime but knows he can’t win.

A lemon loophole

The Liars are the last to return to have their lemons counted. Cady, Johnny (Joseph Zada) and Mirren (Esther McGregor) have empty baskets because they gave all their lemons to Gat (who still has the lime). Harris says their collusion means the prizes are void.

However, Harris offers Gat a chance to win a spot on Tipper’s scholarship program. Gat will have to go to New York immediately, and the internship will keep him away next summer. It all feels very convenient. Gat accepts this opportunity, leading to Cady’s confusion in the present timeline because Gat should be abroad as part of the scholarship and not at Beechwood.

The neurological incident while going online was worse than Cady knew, as she is not sitting on the dock of Martha’s Vineyard like she thought she was, but is in bed. There was no ice cream or first date as Penny had to collect Cady after she took a turn after she went on the internet.

Something happened before Gat could attend the interview, explaining why he is still there. Back in Summer 16, Gat and Maya meet Ed on Martha’s Vineyard, and Gat is disturbed to hear that Harris sent the private jet to collect his mom. Gat asks Ed if it is too late for The Liars not to become like their mothers, and Ed thinks they are different; they have all the time in the world to do things.

Gat realizes he needs to return to the island, but is told only emergency boats are running as an incident has occurred on Beechwood.

As we learn in We Were Liars episode 5, summer on Beechwood is far from the sun-dappled paradise of Cady (Emily Alyn Lind) and the rest of The Liars' youth. But a literal storm in Summer 16 and a near-death experience for Johnny (Joseph Zada) and Gat (Shubham Maheshwari) leads to the teens burying the hatchet. If only the adult Sinclairs would follow in their footsteps, as Penny (Caitlin FitzGerald) is thrilled when she discovers Bess (Candiace King) has been unfaithful.

The past is full of painful memories coming to light for Cady. Still, it isn’t all bad when she recalls a romantic encounter with Gat during Summer 16. This passion boils over in the present as it becomes clear that these feelings remain despite Cady’s anger that none of the Liars came to visit her in the hospital. Perhaps they can begin to move forward with their lives.

The approaching storm

In the present, Cady is still in bed after having a seizure during the Fourth of July fireworks. Penny and Gat watch over her, but can do little about the nightmares. Back in Summer 16, the teens are being used as pawns by their parents to regain Harris’ (David Morse) approval.

Johnny is angry that Ed (Rahul Koli) left after Carrie (Mamie Gummer) rejected Ed’s proposal; he wants to make it right. However, Carrie forbids him from telling anyone what she paid to cover up. They must make it right with Harris, as he is their only chance of weathering the scandal. Johnny sucks up to his grandfather at lunch when Cady objects to the ivory elephants in the collection and Harris’ racist language.

Afterward, Johnny tells his cousin that their grandfather isn’t racist, just old. Tension remains, yet Johnny and Gat cannot refuse to work together when Harris asks them to secure the boats before the storm hits.

Mirren (Esther McGregor) is absent as she has been painting at the lighthouse. She runs into new beau Ebon (Dempsey Bryk), who is sheltering in place, giving the pair another chance to hook up away from the prying eyes of the Sinclairs. Mirren shows Ebon what she has been working on, mentioning not to touch as the canvas takes weeks to dry. Ebon calls her “technically skilled,” which she takes to mean they lack creative flair. In her anger, she hits one of the pieces, smudging the paint and unlocking how to make them stand out. Mirren does this to all her work, but hesitates regarding her “masterpiece.” It is a beautiful painting of The Liars on the beach. But when she smudges the colors, it creates a more evocative image.

Sister secrets

Johnny thinks they would not become friends if he met Gat now because they have nothing in common. This argument ceases to be important when they realize a boat is missing and that his younger brother, Will (Brady Droulis), must’ve taken it out after Johnny blew him off that morning. The storm is now raging, and they have to act fast.

A different furor is brewing inside the main house when Penny confronts Cady for calling out Harris in front of everyone. Penny then brings up what Bess said about seeing Cady and Gat flirting on the beach, saying that Cady needs more discretion. “She’s one to talk about discretion,” Cady responds. Penny won’t let this comment go and gets her daughter to spill the tea.

It doesn’t take long for Penny to find Bess and tell her that Mirren saw her mother having sex with Salty Dan (Tim Rozon). Bess is already smarting from the dressing down her father gave about her husband’s failure. When Bess finds Mirren at the lighthouse with Ebon, she orders Ebon to leave and unleashes her anger at her daughter by punching a hole through Mirren’s favorite painting.

Looking for Will

Harris realizes Will must have gone out on the water when the twins say they cannot find him anywhere, and that Gat and Johnny are missing too. When Carrie is alerted to her sons’ disappearance, she asks someone to call Ed.

Gat and Johnny find Will but cannot get close to him, so Johnny dives into the choppy water to reach him. He gives his little brother a life vest, but as they approach their boat, Johnny becomes overwhelmed with tiredness and goes under. Gat dives in, getting both Will and Johnny to safety.

There is a tearful reunion when Ed brings the boys back. Johnny tells Gat he “would’ve been f***ed without you.” In the present, Johnny still won’t tell Cady exactly what he did (other than it having nothing to do with her), but he admits to Gat in Summer 16 that a revenge plan against the opposing tennis team turned violent.

Carrie paid off everyone who knew about him beating up the teen who walked in on the prank. Blake has a video of this and is using it as blackmail. Johnny says he saw red when it happened, a phrase Carrie uses about Johnny’s birth dad. Johnny admits to being privileged in all the wrong ways.

Later during Summer 16, when Harris praises Johnny for being a hero, Johnny tells his grandfather that it was his fault, as he forgot all the vital rules about storms, and that Gat and Ed saved the day.

Triggering memories

Cady remembers arguing with Mirren because Cady told her mother about Bess sleeping with Salty Dan. But in the present, the rupture is not an issue. However, Cady is annoyed that the other Liars jumped off Sunset Bluffs without her. They think it is too dangerous for her (Johnny doesn’t), but Cady leaps into the water anyway.

But it isn’t FOMO that Cady was feeling. Instead, she tells Gat she thought this might trigger memories of why she was in the water the night of her accident. Gat is angry that she took that risk, while Cady is still furious they didn’t visit her in the hospital.

Anger turns into passion, revealing that Gat and Cady previously slept together during Summer 16. They recreate this moment in the present timeline. Will this heightened emotion unlock more secrets?

Like most American families, fireworks are a Fourth of July tradition that the Sinclairs enjoy. However, this celebration turns ugly in both the present and past when Johnny’s (Joseph Zada) secrets bubble to the surface in We Were Liars episode 4

Now that Cady (Emily Alyn Lind) knows what happened on the day of her grandmother Tipper’s (Wendy Crewson) funeral, she is more determined than ever to find out if there is a connection between Johnny’s lies and her accident. In the past, the three moms, Penny (Caitlin FitzGerald), Carrie (Mamie Gummer) and Bess (Candice King), keep up their competitive dynamic as they vie for their dad’s approval.

Pie and parties

In Summer 16, Gat (Shubham Maheshwari) thinks it’s odd that Harris (David Morse) is pretending he didn’t just lose his wife, but that’s the Sinclair way. Meanwhile, Carrie accuses Penny of wanting to keep up their mother’s Fourth of July pie-baking tradition as a power move to get back in their father’s good graces. It turns petty again when Bess reminds her two sisters that she hasn’t touched a cent of her trust fund.

Meanwhile, The Liars throw a teens-only party at the Windemere house with plenty of booze and a slip & slide. The moms are aware of this “secret” rager, finding it amusing that their kids are following in their footsteps.

Mirren (Esther McGregor) didn’t want Salty Dan (Tim Rozon) to deliver the supplies for their bash. Still, she is unhappy with his replacement, Ebon (Dempsey Bryk) — especially when Ebon mentions he knows about her mom’s affair.

Johnny runs into Ed (Rahul Koli), who is grabbing something from the house and wants to run his proposal plans by his future stepson. Johnny is thrilled but distracted. Ed asks if he has something else on his mind; Johnny lies, saying he is fine.

Baking and blackmail

Back in the Clairmont kitchen, the pie baking becomes a bonding session as the sisters start singing “Linger” by The Cranberries. But when Carrie ends up covered in flour thanks to a blender blunder, it leads to tears because she is furious she didn’t make time to learn how to make a pie with Tipper. Penny launches into the “chin up” directive, immediately killing the mood.

Carrie then puts her foot in it when Cady and Gat come in to grab a few things, as she mentions that she ran into Gat’s girlfriend earlier. Cady has told Gat that everything is fine between them and says Gat should invite Raquel. Of course, Cady doesn’t want him to do this.

Penny’s pie comes out of the oven looking perfect, but the other two are burned. Bess thinks Penny purposefully sabotaged them, destroying the only edible one. Penny has a panic attack, which Bess thinks she is faking. “You have no idea what it feels like to be a failure in Dad’s eyes,” Carrie says.

At the teen party, Johnny is furious when he sees that Mirren has invited the guys on his tennis team. This angry outburst is something that Cady is focused on in Summer 17. Gat says he has never paid attention to Johnny’s rich kid drama, and when Cady pushes him further, he points out that maybe her mind is trying to protect her.

Gat gives her nothing, so Cady searches Johnny’s bedroom and finds Johnny’s phone. She sees a threatening text from Blake with an attached video; Blake’s message says that keeping him quiet will cost a lot.

Heartbreak and hooking up

In Summer 16. Harris continues to be disappointed by his daughters. He tells Carrie that Penny is spending twice her budget, Bess has nothing (despite what she said about her trust) and he knows Carrie needs something. Carrie explains she did have savings with Ed, but an incident at Johnny’s school has drained their accounts. Carrie took care of it, and Ed doesn’t know. Carrie needs her dad because whatever Johnny did could smear the Sinclair name.

On the beach, Johnny finds Ed setting up the proposal picnic. Ed knows something is up with Johnny, but before he can find out what, a teary Carrie asks Johnny to leave so they can have one-on-one time. Carrie tells Ed she can’t marry him. Ed doesn’t understand why, and Carrie can’t explain. Ed says Johnny’s problems are his problems, yet that isn’t enough. It appears that Harris made Carrie a deal that led to this breakup.

At The Liars' party, Mirren is having more romantic success as her annoyance at Ebon turns into flirtation. She has also collected rich people's secrets and feels as invisible as Ebon. This common ground leads to kisses and more.

Apologizing and angry attacks

Cady spends the whole party drinking too much and trying to make Gat jealous. When she sobers up, she apologizes for her behavior. Gat didn’t even bring Raquel to the party; he went to Martha’s Vineyard to break up with her in person. The fireworks begin, and their reconciliation is interrupted by Johnny standing on the cliff's edge, throwing bottles and crying.

In the present, Cady connects Johnny’s phone to the Wi-Fi so she can play the video that shows Johnny beating someone to a pulp. In the previous episode, Blake said Johnny nearly killed someone. Carrie walks in on Cady watching this and gets upset when she sees what Cady has found. Johnny begs his mother to return his phone, but the damage is done. Carrie knows what Johnny did, but this might be her first time seeing it.

Cady runs outside, where the fireworks are going off. Johnny yells at her for going through his phone; he is sick of her playing the victim card. There is a lot of shouting as Cady collapses and starts having a seizure. The doctor said screens are triggering, and the stress of the argument with Johnny hasn’t helped. Did Johnny have something to do with her accident?
