After eight episodes of green transformations, uncanny breaks in the fourth wall and interesting cameos from other heroes in the Marvel Universe, the She-Hulk: Attorney at Law season 1 finale aired, leaving viewers with a few question marks. 

In the last few minutes of the season in particular, a number of revelations were made about some big names in the MCU that can have some serious implications. Plus, it seems writers are making She-Hulk’s (Tatiana Maslany) love life less of a "fluke" going forward, giving her a possible relationship with another hero. So what did we learn from the She-Hulk season 1 finale?

Who is the main villain in She-Hulk?

It turns out that the big bad of She-Hulk is not Titania (Jameela Jamil) after all. While the two have battled it out all season, Jennifer’s number one villain is actually the creepy client from her law firm, Todd Phelps (Jon Bass). He’s the leader behind Intelligencia, the agency responsible for cyber-bullying She-Hulk.  

We aren’t sure if Todd has a future in the MCU given he was arrested, theoretically has no superpowers and isn’t very intimidating. However, since he’s a billionaire, perhaps he may wind up funding some sinister team of more viable villains later down the line. 

Who did She-Hulk fall in love with? 

Both Jennifer and She-Hulk haven’t exactly been lucky in love for most of the season. Regardless of what form she’s in, the men she’s come across have been weird, superficial or completely using her as a part of a hidden agenda. Then came along episode 8 of She-Hulk and the attorney got to meet everyone’s favorite martial arts expert from Hell’s Kitchen, Matt Murdock aka Daredevil (Charlie Cox). The chemistry between these two has been like peanut butter and jelly, making it seem like Jennifer found a match. 

Their connection may be something viewers can really invest their energy in given Matt Murdock shows back up in the season 1 finale. In the final moments of the series, he faces tough questions from Jennifer’s family about his life and intentions with her. He reveals he’s in town to spend time with the strong woman for a week. While we won’t bring out wedding invitations just yet, it’s nice to see She-Hulk and Daredevil partner up romantically. Perhaps, she’ll make an appearance in the Daredevil reboot, Daredevil: Born Again.  

Will there be a Hulk movie with Mark Ruffalo? 

To be perfectly blunt, we don’t know for sure. Marvel Studios hasn’t officially announced that a standalone Hulk film is in the works. However, in the She-Hulk season 1 finale, it certainly seems as if the MCU is gearing up for one. 

When Jennifer literally breaks the fourth wall and goes to see Kevin — which turns out to be an AI system and not Marvel President Kevin Fiege — a revealing dialogue takes place. As she argues why Hulk shouldn’t return in a final sequence to save the day, the AI system states, "Bruce is supposed to return to explain what he was doing all season." Jennifer replies, "No, no, no we don’t need to hear any of that."

The conversation gets interesting when the computerized Kevin counters, "But we were going to introduce…" Before it can finish the statement, Jennifer interrupts by saying "Ugh, save it for the movie." 

The last sentence seems to tease that a Hulk movie with Mark Ruffalo is forthcoming, but in Marvel fashion, things are being kept under wraps. Plus, the fact that Hulk does make an appearance in the finale with his son Skaar from Sakaar left fans with lots of questions that can only be answered properly with a film.

By the way, there are several projects in MCU’s Phase 6 that have been assigned tentative released dates but are untitled. Let’s hope one of the projects is about the original green hero. 

Will Wong show up in another Marvel series? 

In one of Marvel’s famous end-credit scenes, Emil Blonsky (Tim Roth) is seen in a containment cell. Then out of nowhere, Wong (Benedict Wong) pops up via a magic portal ready to help the prisoner escape. As Wong apologizes for being late, Emil asks the stunning question, "You got stuck doing another show didn’t you?" 

Wong appears to coyly acknowledge that this was the case. That begs the question, what MCU series will the Sorcerer Supreme show up in next? If we had to guess, we’d venture to say he’ll next appear in Agatha: Coven of Chaos. Given both Agatha and Wong deal in the mystic arts, it makes sense. 

All episodes of She-Hulk season 1 are now available to stream on Disney Plus. Be sure to catch the next Marvel release, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever debuting on November 11.  

WandaVision wasn’t always slated to premiere before The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, but ongoing delays and reshoots for the series. Plus, filming shutdowns due to the coronavirus back in March of last year didn’t help either. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is now premiering on March 21st on Disney's streaming platform. 

Like WandaVision, the highly-anticipated series takes place after the events of Avengers: Endgame. Steve Roger retired from his role as Captain America, choosing to live a simple life in an alternate timeline with his longtime love, Peggy Carter. That’s right. He just showed up to her doorstep with a duffle bag and no job. Truly romantic. Sam Wilson (Falcon) has now picked up the shield and has teamed up with frenemy turned full-blown friend Bucky Barnes. 

Wyatt Russel is a new addition to the MCU. He joins The Falcon and the Winter Soldier as US Agent, also known as John Walker. From what we know so far, US Agent has taken the mantle of Captain America, a total disregard to Steve’s choosing Sam. This should set up an interesting dynamic between Walker, Sam, and Bucky. Emily VanCamp will also reprise her role as Sharon Carter, great niece to Peggy Carter. 

The first official trailer teases an appearance from personal drama starter Zemo (Daniel Brühl), who first appeared in Captain America: Civil War back in 2016. We aren’t sure exactly why Zemo is there, but maybe there are some clues in this newest trailer. Check it out:

Folks are still mad about superheroes, it seems. Sam and Bucky are going to have their work cut out for them as they continue to deal with the fallout of the Sakovia accords, their own conflicting personalities, and old foes. Sharon Carter returns to help the boys carrying the shield, so at least they're not on their own. 

We still don't know much, but we know that we absolutely cannot wait for the continuation of this series. 

Modern blockbuster filmmaking has seen exceptional technological advances as well as the immeasurable growth of the medium to the point where it now forms the foundations of modern Hollywood. Before the COVID-19 pandemic changed the game irrevocably, we were in the midst of a period of seismic change for the film industry thanks to these mega-budget tentpole titles. Last year, nine of the top ten highest-grossing films of 2019 brought in over a billion dollars worldwide, and every single movie in that list was either a sequel, reboot, or new addition to a multi-film franchise. There were now exceptions, and almost all of them cost, at the very least, $100 million. Once upon a time, that number was considered the rarest of luxuries for a studio, the kind of investment that inspired shocked headlines. Now, it's considered "low-budget". It's startlingly common to see films with reported budgets exceeding $250 million. Last year, Avengers: Endgame had a mind-boggling budget of $356 million, although it clearly paid off as it became the highest-grossing film of all time. This is the new normal: Wildly expensive franchise fare that is too big to fail and will dominate the pop culture landscape for years to come.

So, why do so many of these films look, to put it kindly, somewhat dire?

Many a joke has already been made about the samey aesthetics of these $200m+ expanded universe installments: the strange over-reliance on blue lightning shooting through cloudy skies; the sea of beige and brown that defines the color palates of so many of these stories; oddly flat lighting; a distinct allergy to anything remotely vibrant or “unreal.” Indeed, we now expect it so frequently, are so ready for it to be the default mode for these movies, that we barely notice it. The orange and teal contrast is now infamous among film fans, with ECG Productions noting that the overused color choices are commonly utilized in blockbusters as a way to make action scenes look their best. It’s a disheartening development that only further exacerbates the seemingly never-ending discourse surrounding blockbuster cinema that has exhausted us. Everything looks the same, whether it’s a Star Wars movie, a Disney remake, a lavish superhero tale, or even Cats. They’re all cut from the same cloth of aesthetics.

We see this issue most obviously in films like the continuing assembly line of Disney’s remakes of its beloved animated classics. Consider the 2017 remake of Beauty and the Beast, based on the film that is widely considered to be one of Disney’s greatest animation achievements. The original is so effervescent in its visuals, full of colors and textures that enliven its narrative. By contrast, Bill Condon’s remake, which had a reported budget of $255 million, was flat, drab, and decidedly unmagical. Costumes and CGI characters were more ornate in their detailing, but it didn’t make them seem prettier or more interesting than the original designs. They couldn’t really differ much from those familiar images because Disney had corporate synergy to maintain (another crucial aspect as to why these films all look so derivative: they have to stick closely to the familiar nostalgic source material as a means of strengthening the brand and trademarks.)

This problem also reared its ugly head with last year’s The Lion King, which cost a reported $250 million. Sure, it was impressive to see photorealistic lions, but the moment they had to talk with human voices, the illusion cracked, and you were instantly reminded of how lifeless and flat it all looked. Stylistically speaking, most of these films are aiming for realism, or at least a highly polished version of it suited to cinema. Admittedly, it is stunning to see how far CGI has come, to the point where we’re no longer impressed by the sight of an entirely digital world. The downside to this advancement is a further embracing of this derivative aesthetic, all in the name of looking “real.” Bright colors are discarded, for example. The expressive joys and limitless nature of the medium is ignored in favor of something that no longer astounds us. It is assumed that audiences want this bastardized version of “real” over the qualities that won us over the first time round. It doesn’t seem to dawn on any of these studios that striving for the dullest form of realism in movies centered on intergalactic battles, fairytale princesses, and talking cats may be somewhat misguided.

Every moment of these movies is predetermined before anyone ever cries "action", thanks to pre-visualization software, to the point where you wonder why a director and their crew are even needed. The same applies to fight scenes, which goes a long way to explaining why we have a solid decade of superheroes fighting baddies in the same darkened alleys with the same sets of moves. Tools like this are necessary when so much money is on the line, but it doesn't exactly encourage experimentation or creative choices outside of the narrowly expected norm. This is the consequence of too-big-to-fail filmmaking and the blockbuster market currently ruling its domain.

It’s hard to avoid the labor aspects at play with such creative failings. VFX workers and studios are notoriously overworked and underpaid in Hollywood, given the tightest of deadlines to complete the most intricate work at ridiculously reduced costs. The mistreatment of VFX teams has been extensively documented. The studio behind the oft-lauded effects on the remake of The Lion King was forced to shut down due to lack of funds. Studios pit companies like these ones against one another, forcing them to bid low to get the job and freelancers to work for decreased wages (there's no VFX union.) The Lion King was the second-highest grossing film of 2020 but the people who made it happen weren't even fairly compensated for it. Hollywood has become dependent on this visual aesthetic but has no desire to treat the hundreds of talented FX artists who make it happen with dignity.

It doesn’t seem unreasonable to expect more from the likes of Disney with such films. After all, they are so immensely powerful and influential, dominating a major (and deeply questionable) share of the market, and surely audience standards should reflect that? It’s a disheartening development for these wildly expensive films, the ones that now wholly define mainstream pop culture to the worldwide masses, to view the basic building blocks of storytelling as artistic non-entities.

It’s not all doom and gloom. Get the right director in charge – and a studio with enough patience to make it happen – and you can see blockbusters that burst out of the modern mold in big ways. Consider the striking use of color and fluid camera work of Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi or the near-kaleidoscopic vibrancy of the giant robots and monsters in Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim. A lot of work goes into making these films and directors and their crews are burdened with such immense expectations, but that shouldn’t mean that audiences should so willingly swallow beige mediocrity. If we are to be swamped under by sequels, reboots, expanded universes, and glossy big-budget IPs, then the very least we should expect is some diversity of image.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is made up of four phases, with the "Infinity Saga" making up Phase 3. Black Widow is scheduled to be the first movie of Phase 4, but its release was delayed due to the global pandemic shutting down theaters.

How to watch The Avengers on Disney+

Arguably the most pivotal film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is available to stream on Disney+ for a reasonable rate. If you’d prefer to subscribe on a monthly basis, it’ll cost you just $6.99 per month. How to watch The Avengers everywhere else:

If you’d prefer not to subscribe to Disney+, there are a handful of options available to you. For those who have access to Amazon Prime Video, you can stream Marvel’s The Avengers as part of your plan. It’s also available on other platforms including the iTunes store, Google Play and Vudu. The price ranges, but it generally costs about $2.99 to rent and $19.99 to purchase.

Should you watch The Avengers on Disney+ or somewhere else?

As part of Disney+, you’ll also gain access to the handful of MCU television series that is currently in production. Those confirmed include The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, WandaVision, Loki, What If...? and more. This is the definitive home of the MCU and even though it doesn’t quite have everything, it’s a great place to binge-watch these iconic

Well, that’s a personal choice, but there are a lot more benefits to a Disney+ subscription than there are to simply rent the film elsewhere. If you’re solely interested in watching this film from the MCU catalog and you already have an Amazon Prime subscription, then your decision is probably already made.

Nowadays, it's not unsual to assume new movie releases are available in 4K. Among those would be the Marvel Cinematic Universe films, but that's not entirely the case. Not every movie in the MCU catalog is available in 4K, or at least not yet.

In a recent interview with Collider , Captain Marvel producers Victoria Alonso and Jonathan Schwartz confirmed that Marvel will fix that by releasing every MCU movie in 4K.

"We are going to remaster all of our films in 4K," said Alonso. "We're in the process of doing that, so it's all happening."

Currently, only 13 of the 22 MCU movies are available in 4K. Almost every recent movie is available, but other titles like Guardians of the Galaxy, Ant-Man and Doctor Strange are missing from the list. Here's every MCU movie that is available in 4K.

Some of the most egregious movies missing from the 4K line-up are the Iron Man movies, which are among the most popular in the MCU. But don't fret, because all three Iron Man movies and the first two Thor movies will get the 4K treatment this summer.
