The Tomorrow War is about to give us thrills and spills galore this summer. Off the back of his huge blockbuster Avengers: Endgame, Chris Pratt takes on another action-packed sci-fi thriller. Imagine the shock when a group of time travellers arrive from the year 2051 with a terrifying message – that 30 years in the future mankind is losing a global war against a deadly alien species.

This news sends shockwaves across the world in The Tomorrow War, with present day civilians stunned at the news that humans are doomed. The only hope for survival is if those from the present agree to be transported into the future to join the fight. Of course there's always an all-action hero played by 42-year-old Chris Pratt to put things right!

The Tomorrow War cast — Chris Pratt as Dan Forester

Among those recruited to fight the war in the future is Miami high school teacher and family man Dan Forester, played by Chris Pratt. Dan is determined to save the world for his young daughter. "It’s a story about second chances," Chris says of his character who lives in Miami Beach. "Dan is a guy who feels like he’s always been destined to do something extraordinary with his life, but hasn’t actually done it yet, and I think that’s a feeling a lot of people can relate to. At one point or another, we’ve all wondered if the life we’re living might not be the one we were meant for."

Chris Pratt certainly has decent action-hero credentials, making a name for himself in the Marvel movies, playing Star-Lord. His character has appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy and its 2017 sequel, Avengers: Infinity War as well as the 2019 blockbuster Avengers: Endgame. He’ll also be starring in their upcoming movies Thor: Love and Thunder, due to be released next year, and The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which will be coming to our screens in 2023. 

Chris also starred in Jurassic World in 2015 and the 2018 follow-up Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. He’s also more than equipped to handle the lighter elements of the movie, having won acclaim for his role in the comedy series Parks and Recreation.

The Tomorrow War — Chris Pratt on the action sequences

The Tomorrow War star Chris Pratt says: "It really was a physical film. Off the top of my head, there’s a really great sequence, and I know that we’re focusing on the people of present-day 2021, but when we do make that jump to 2051, there’s this transition and we fall from the sky in Miami and land in a pool. So there was some serious water work that we got to do, and that was a lot of fun. We got to jump off of this basically kind of high dive that we built out of a forklift and jumped off into the water. The camera followed us down and then you had stunt people jumping down and landing on top of you, forcing you underwater, so that whole sequence, which probably took two or three days, was really cool, really fun, and really physical." 

The issue of the draft comes up and poses an existential dilemma for Dan Forester, who has been feeling professionally rudderless for some time and craves the sense of direction and purpose that he once had in the military, but he’s horrified at the thought of leaving behind his wife Emmy (Glow’s Betty Gilpin) and young daughter Mary to fight in a battle that he is unlikely to return from. His initial instinct is to find a way to dodge the draft and remove the device on his arm which will transport him to the future - which, unfortunately for him, requires tracking down his estranged father James, an engineer with a major distrust of the government who lives off the grid.

"Thematically we have some similarities to It’s A Wonderful Life in this film," says Chris Pratt. "Granted, this guy is not on a bridge about to kill himself, but he’s dissatisfied with his station in life, he’s got a dad who he’s estranged from, and he blames his father for all of his issues because he wasn’t around, but through the course of this story he recognises that he has more similarities with his father than he ever realised. He gets to a place of acceptance and forgiveness for his father, because he realises it wasn’t easy for him either.

"So Dan has a really complicated relationship with his father, and I felt like that was something I could bring my own experiences to. Although my situation and Dan’s are quite different, there were definitely a few aspects of this character that I mined from my own background."

Yvonne Strahovski plays brilliant scientist Romeo, who is also selected to fight in the war in the future and forms an alliance with Dan. 

Yvonne says she's a big fan of action movies involving aliens, so she couldn’t put the script down when she first got her hands on it. "I was flipping the pages as fast as I could because it was just so exciting. It’s the kind of story where you need to buckle your seatbelt once it begins, because it’s a ride that just doesn’t stop. It keeps racing forward until the very end, which makes it a lot of fun." 

As for action sequences, there are plenty of those for Yvonne: "There’s a scene where Chris Pratt and I have to run across a steel beam at the very top of a power plant,’ recalls. And because everything in the power plant is made out of metal grate, you could see each level all the way to the bottom. I’m not too afraid of heights, but I wasn’t sure if I could actually run across it - we were on wires, but you’ve really got to channel your inner zen and just have blind faith that you’re not going to fall off!"

Yvonne is best known for her role as Serena Joy Waterford in the epic series The Handmaid’s Tale. She’s also appeared in The Astronaut Wives Club, Dexter and 24: Live Another Day.

In a desperate attempt to rewrite the fate of the planet, Dan is also forced to reach out for help from his estranged father, James. He’s played by J.K. Simmons, another Marvel stalwart who voices J. Jonah Jameson in many of the movies and animations, including The Justice League and the Spider-Man trilogy. J.K. has also had roles in La La Land, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Defending Jacob.

J.K. Simmons says: "When I read the script, we really do see the micro and the macro - there’s this beautiful family stuff with Chris’s character at home his family, and then when my sort of estranged dad kind of non-relationship turns up, I was hoping that there was going to be some kind of a worthwhile journey there — and there is! No spoilers, but it was great to be able to incorporate that small picture with the gigantic picture of, Are we going to save the world or not?"

Betty Gilpin (GLOW, The Hunt) stars as Dan Forester's wife Emmy, while Ryan Kiera Armstrong (American Horror Story) is their daughter Muri. As for Dan's fellow draftees, Sam Richardson (Veep, Detroiters) plays Charlie, while Edwin Hodge (Six, Mayans M.C.) is Dorian, Mary Lynn Rajskub (24, Night School) is Norah and Mike Mitchell (Love, Brews Brothers) plays Cowan. Jasmine Mathews (The Rookie, The Man From Toronto) plays the exceptionally tough L.T. Hart.

The Tomorrow War director Chris McKay gives his thoughts

This is director Chris McKay’s live-action directorial debut but he’s well known for directing the animation The Lego Batman Movie in 2017. He also had a cameo in that movie, voicing Pilot Bill one of the pilots of the airplane hijacked by the Joker.

Chris McKay says: ‘What was really important to me was the idea of what do you owe the future? I love genre movies, but also I’m caught somewhere between John Carpenter and John Cassavetes - there’s always a little bit of human story in the drama. To have an original sci-fi movie that can have a big, epic scope like this but can have a bit of heart and give you something to think about was a real gift.’

The Tomorrow War locations

The Tomorrow War was filmed between September 1 2019 and January 1 2020. Although most of the action was shot in the US state of Georgia — in Lincolnton and Atlanta — some of the movie was filmed in Iceland. In the story, however, the Nordic island nation stands in for Russia. “Shooting in Iceland gave the cast and crew a connection to the material that went far beyond the theoretical,” says writer Zach Dean. “It affects your senses in a way that you just can’t experience in front of a green screen on a soundstage in Los Angeles. Everything feels much more extreme, and real, and palpable."

Detective Chinatown 3 has officially beaten Avengers: Endgame for the biggest-ever single-territory opening weekend at the box office.

Writer-director Chen Sicheng’s buddy-cop action-comedy was initially scheduled for its Chinese release in late January last year. When COVID-19 shut down the Chinese movie market, Detective Chinatown 3 was delayed to coincide with the Lunar New Year period this year (a hugely lucrative period) and released Friday, February 12, 2021.

The 12-month delay certainly built hype for the film, as Detective Chinatown 3 has shattered the record for the biggest-ever opening weekend and opening day previously held by Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame. 

According to Deadline, Detective Chinatown 3 grossed a truly astonishing estimated RMB 1.05B ($163M) to score the biggest, single-territory opening day ever of any movie in a single market. Avengers: Endgame, meanwhile, grossed $157 million in the same period.

Avengers: Endgame finished its opening weekend with a staggering $357 million launch. Detective Chinatown 3 finished its three-day debut grossing an estimated RMB 2.57B, which converts to $398 million, overtaking the world’s greatest superheroes by no less than $41 million in the same period

Detective Chinatown 3 was shot entirely on IMAX-certified cameras from Wanda Pictures and has also set a new record for the IMAX format in China, too. IMAX versions of the film grossed RMB 152M ($23.5M) over the weekend, making it also the best-ever debut for a Chinese IMAX release, too. The film is predicted by Maoyan, the largest ticketing website in China, to conclude its theatrical run having raked in RMB 4.84B ($750 million). 

Detective Chinatown 3 is the latest instalment of the Detective Chinatown franchise which stars Wang Baoqiang and Liu Haoran as bumbling detectives Tang Ren and Qin Feng (Wang and Liu, respectively). In DC3, Tang Ren and Qin Feng have been invited to Tokyo to investigate a new mystery, bringing them into contact with a range of the best detectives from all across Asia.

WandaVision has been such a stark departure from what we’re used to getting from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Breaking up the story of Wanda’s breakdown into a nine-episode series has allowed the storytellings to stick the emotional beats in ways the movies sometimes failed to accomplish. Sure, watching Peter Parker fade away while Tony Stark held him was impactful in its own way. Still, with so much chaos happening from start to finish in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, there wasn’t enough time to really feel the gravity of the situation. Movies can be limited in this way, especially when so much is crammed into a short amount of time.

I’m thankful we get time to sit with each episode of WandaVision weekly. It helps with digesting each episode — and there has been a lot to process. Specifically speaking to the fourth episode, "We Interrupt This Program", the cold open was an episode all by itself. In it, Monica Rambeau reappears sitting in a hospital room after coming back from The Blip. She is visibly in duress and so are we, the viewers. The hospital is in utter disarray as people begin reappearing. You can even hear chaos unfolding outside as Monica makes her way out of the room. I’m not saying this moment wouldn’t mean anything if WandaVision were a feature, but not looking away from Monica learning she's lost her mother and was gone for five years makes the moment hit harder. And, because we’ve been able to sit with this world for three episodes a week at a time prior, a connection to this world and these characters has been established in a way that differs from the movies. 

Spider-Man: Far From Home gave insight into a world grappling with the effects of The Blip, but on an emotional scale, it pales in comparison to what WandaVision gives us a glimpse at. That’s all thanks to the acting of Teyonah Parris, who masterfully sells the entire open. Because of her performance, we're able to feel the full breadth of the devastation left in the wake of The Blip as people come back. In Avengers: Endgame, sit with the heroes left as they grapple with a world post-snap, but we've never been given the perspective of someone who came back from it—we've only seen the reactions of the half that survived. Because Monica's loss is directly tied to the Blip, we can begin to fully realize how traumatic it was both to those left and to everyone who disappeared once they return. Jokes about someone thinking his wife was a victim of The Blip when in reality she left him to be with someone doesn’t warrant the emotional work. 

Then there's the understanding of how utterly heartbreaking the life of Wanda Maximoff has been. It’s not like we don’t know her story and what happened to her in those MCU films. Still, now that Elizabeth Olsen has gotten a chance to emote and be fully expressive in the first three episodes of WandaVision, we have the needed emotional cues to understand her as a character. Wanda working through her trauma in this heightened larger-than-life daydream feels entirely relatable. I get that. I understand wanting to escape from the traumas of life to dream up my own world in which I don’t know the pain — one I’m trying so desperately to escape from — if only for a few moments. It’s a coping mechanism. I’m not debating whether or not what Wanda has done is morally right. She is holding an entire town of people hostage, after all. But I am saying that I can begin to understand how her hurt could rule her so much that she would use her powers in this way to piece together a life she’ll never know. WandaVision is Avengers: Disassembled, but with actual care to her and her trauma.   

WandaVision is doing a tremendous service to characters with such rich comic histories. It’s only four episodes in, and we still haven’t begun to completely understand how heartbroken Wanda is or even Monica to that extent. She just came into her loss, and we don’t know how that has affected her and will continue to affect her. We still don’t know the full story of how Vision is there, although episode four might hint at the grisly truth of his situation. There are still five episodes of WandaVision left, and I’m looking forward to seeing how this show continues to handle these characters and their world.

What is WandaVision actually about? That's the question that we're all asking after the first two episodes of Marvel Studios' first ever TV series. So far, the sitcom-influenced superhero show has excelled at being weird and wonderful, while never revealing too much about its secrets. That doesn't mean we don't have theories, though! One of the most fun things about watching the Marvel Cinematic Universe films and those from their Distinguished Competition is deciphering the clues, mysteries, and puzzles left by the creative teams. That's particularly relevant in the case of WandaVision as the entire setup of the series is based around the audience not knowing the status quo of where we find ourselves and our strange heroes.   

After two episodes we're no closer to having a definitive answer to where Wanda and Vision are but we do have some potential hints that support a very out there but still quite possible theory. Before we begin to break it down, let's recap the last tragic time we saw Vision (Paul Bettany) and Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen). During the events of Avengers: Infinity War, Wanda attempted to stop Thanos by destroying the Mind Stone which sat in Vision's head and was the source of his life. Sadly, for the hero known as Scarlet Witch, the purple villain had the Time Stone, meaning that he just rewound time, plucked the Mind Stone out of Vision's head, and plopped it into his big gold glove. While we haven't seen what happened to the android's body after Infinity War, Paul Bettany recently revealed that Avengers: Endgame almost included a scene showing that Wanda is in possession of the empty shell of the (robot) man she once loved. 

That outcome would be logical. Not only in the comics we do get a resurrected version of Vision—known by fans as White Vision or Gray Vision—but also in the movies the pair are inseparable. The unstable nature of Wanda and her love for Vision mean that she would 100% have taken his cold metal body and kept it with her in the hopes of finding a way to bring him back to life. Which means, as we know, Wanda more than likely has Vision's body. And if she's looking for a way to bring back her soulmate, she would likely head back to Stark Industries. 

During the first episode we get our first hint that Stark Industries could be involved in Wanda's current predicament. As we watch the episode of the heroine's new sitcom-inspired life, there's an advert break. The product is a Stark Toast Mate 2000. While many eagle-eyed viewers noticed that its ominous red light and beeping could represent the Stark bomb which killed Wanda's parents, we think it could signify something else. Is Wanda stuck inside the Stark mainframe searching for Vision's original backup? During the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron, Vision was created using the Mind Stone, a new metal body originally meant for the titular villain, the magic of Thor's hammer, and most importantly for this theory the A.I. program known as J.A.R.V.I.S. If Wanda is trying to restore Vision, surely she would have gone back to the source of his personality, which would mean hacking into the Stark computer system.

If Wanda somehow used her powers—which in the comics consist of reality warping and magic—to try and locate Vision within the mainframe of the Stark computers, there's no reason that she might not have either gotten trapped or even ended up manifesting the program into a fully blown alt-reality. While it might sound like an outrageous explanation, there are actually multiple moments that support this theory. Think about the setup of the show, each episode seeming to take place in a different era. This could be explained by Wanda exploring the decades of data that are stored in the Stark mainframe. It could be why we saw the strange Stark commercial for the outdated technology, as well as why Wanda's own memories and trauma seem to be getting intertwined with the out of time world she's found herself in. 

The biggest clue of course—aside from the fact Wanda is literally trapped inside a television—is that in the world of WandaVision Vision actually exists. He's funny, clever, witty, and just as in love with Wanda as ever. This is exactly what she wanted, but how did it occur, especially without the Mind Stone? The most obvious answer is that Wanda is somewhere where his personality and programming is still functioning. This theory would also explain why we're seeing so much HYDRA. As far as we know, the Nazi terrorists were defeated after Captain America revealed they had infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D. in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. And yet here they are in the guise of the Strucker watch commercial in episode two, and the appearance of the beekeeper at the end of that same episode. In the comics, A.I.M.—the one time science arm of HYDRA—are known by their yellow biohazard suits which look just like those that are worn by beekeepers. Wanda could have all of this knowledge herself, but it could also just be more data backed up in the Stark mainframe that has manifested itself into reality. 

It's important to point out here that it wouldn't be the first time that a computer program jumped out of the screen and became a reality changing and potentially world ending threat in the MCU. Remember the previously mentioned Avengers: Age of Ultron? The entire film is based around an A.I. who gains sentience and is disgusted at the way humans have ruined the world and decides to end them. But that's not all. We also get the creation of Vision, himself once again a computer program who later became something close to a human being. While the MCU might look like our world, it's actually a high fantasy space where people can fly and computers might just take over the world. Or, in WandaVision's case, suck you inside them. There's a final aesthetic clue that Wanda might be trapped inside of some kind of Stark technology which comes at the end of each episode. After we leave the TV show, we zoom through a credits sequence that looks very much like we're flying over a computer motherboard. It could just be a cool design choice... or maybe a hint at where Wanda is actually lost?

To be quite frank, this is a matter of personal preference. If you want to purchase or rent the film for 48 hours and be done with it, then you can do so and walk away. However, you'll be missing out on a great opportunity with Disney+.
