Scrolling for something new to watch on Hulu this week, July 19-25? Let me give you a hand with my picks for the best movies, TV shows and more arriving on the streaming service.

There's something pretty much for everyone this week, including an acclaimed sci-fi movie that yet flew under the radar, a classic sitcom, a delicious summer treat and a brand new original series based on a popular book.

The Assessment (2025)

• "Certified Fresh" sci-fi movie premieres on Hulu July 19

What if before you could have a child you had to go through a rigorous, and honestly strange, assessment to determine if you were capable of being fit parents? That's the premise behind the sci-if movie The Assessment, which stars Elizabeth Olsen, Himesh Patel and Alicia Vikander.

The indie movie received a minimal run in movie theaters earlier this year, so this will be the first chance for many to see the movie. But based on reactions from those that have seen The Assessment — the movie has a 92% fan score on Rotten Tomatoes, and is "Certified Fresh" — this is definitely one to check out.

Red Eye season 1 & 2

• UK crime drama takes off on Hulu as of July 22

UK crime drama Red Eye, which follows a London police officer tasked with transporting a man back to Beijing where he is accused of a crime, learns that she might actually be in the middle of a major conspiracy. Jing Lusi and Richard Armitage star in the first season of series that fans couldn't get enough of, while Red Eye season 2 continued the story of Lusi's Hana Li as she gets involved in another case. Could be a fun UK import to fill your summer nights.

Washington Black

• Adaptation of best-selling novel premieres on July 23

Sterling K. Brown already had a Hulu hit earlier this year (the Emmy-nominated Paradise), now he's back with as star and producer of the new series Washington Black, an adaptation of the novel by Esi Edugyan. The 19th-century-set series follows the titular young man from Barbados, played by Ernest Kingsley Jnr., who must go on a globe trotting adventure when his life is turned upside down. Could Brown have a second streaming hit on his hands this year?

Who Wants to Be a Millionaire season 4

• The classic game show returns with new episodes featuring celebrity contestants, streaming on-demand on Hulu starting July 24

It's a great summer for fans of game shows with the likes of The 1% Club season 2, The Quiz with Balls season 2, Celebrity Family Feud season 11 and Press Your Luck season 6, all of which stream on-demand on Hulu. But get ready for another, as Who Wants to Be a Millionaire season 4 premieres this week, with its episodes also streaming on-demand on Hulu.

We all know the basics of the classic game show, but this edition is hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and feature celebrity contestants playing for charity. Can any of them win $1 million?

Mad About You seasons 1-7

• All episodes of the classic sitcom land on Hulu on July 24

Mad About You hasn't bridged the generational gap that Friends or The Office has... yet. One of the top sitcoms of the 90s starred Helen Hunt and Paul Reiser as a married couple going through life's up and downs in New York. It won 12 Emmys, most for Helen Hunt as Lead Actress in a Comedy and the legendary Mel Brooks in a recurring guest role. With all seven original seasons (there was a 12-episode revival that aired in 2019) streaming on Hulu, take a break from your rewatches of Friends and The Office and give Mad About You a try.

Summer Baking Championship season 2

Thanks to my wife, I have gotten into baking shows, particularly The Great British Baking Show. But we wont' be getting the latest season of The Great British Baking Show (aka The Great British Bake Off 2025) until later this fall, so to bide the time Summer Baking Championship season 2 (which originally aired last summer) is a good alternative. Jesse Palmer hosts as 10 top bakers from the US cook up delicious baked treats in a fun competition.

The Great British Baking Show has become such a popular TV show in recent years, in large part because the UK import is like a good cup of British tea: relaxing and warm. It's been an end-of-week tradition for me when new episodes hit Netflix each fall (The Great British Baking Show 2024 is currently releasing new episodes weekly). But this time of year is also spooky season, so if you enjoy baking shows but also love the jump scares and bloody shrieks of the horror genre, then there is actually a show you're going to want to check out: Killer Cakes.

Streaming on Freevee (which is appropriately available for free to all viewers on its on TV app or through Prime Video online), Killer Cakes features four teams of professional bakers and horror fans competing against each other by creating some bloody, disgusting and delicious cakes, with the winner taking home $20,000. The show is hosted by horror movie legend Matthew Lillard (Scream).

Right away the differences between Killer Cakes and The Great British Baking Show are stark. You won't find the cozy white tent of the Baking Show anywhere, as the bakers instead compete in a dingy, creepy warehouse straight out of Freddy Kreuger's nightmares. And while I wouldn't say that the baking teams are treating this like a cutthroat competition, the chill vibe often associated with the Baking Show (drama there includes contestants having to step aside because they're a bit under the weather) is not what they're going for in Killer Cakes; they literally eliminate their contestants by saying "I'm sorry, you're dead to us."

As mentioned, these are professional bakers, so instead of using some of the challenges to test their proficiency in baking, this is all about how creative they can be in making some truly memorable cakes. For example, the first episode required them to create their own horror movie villain that they would need to kill, incorporating special effects like blood oozing from their bodies. But at the same time, the cakes still have to taste good. That is truly the best part of the show, to see the creativity and the ability of these bakers to complete these tasks in six hours, as well as their joy in mixing two of the passions together.

That said, there are some things with the show that don’t work (or at least don't work for me). Lillard tries to be game for the show, but he's a bit of a square peg in a round hole. He particularly struggles with the banter with the bakers.

There are more than a few Halloween-themed baking shows that viewers have to choose from right now. The Food Network alone has shows like Halloween Baking Championship season 10 and Outrageous Pumpkins season 5, but Killer Cakes is definitely trying to find the sweet spot with people who love movies like Friday the 13th and find joy baking a birthday cake.

Hey there, sports fans, welcome back. Hope you’re doing okay. The pandemic has taken few prisoners, and as the world tries its best to feign normalcy, we’ve had all kinds of odd attempts at keeping sports alive. We had the NHL playoff bubble, the NBA hilarious hotel lockdown, the MLB disaster, and the nose out mask mess of the NFL. As we barrel towards Thanksgiving, it feels like the pool of ball throwing and stick pucking gets dryer and dryer. While our beloved games become less available and even more of an ethical minefield, submitted for fans, our favorite off-season sport: Food Network baking competitions.

We’re not here to argue whether baking competitions counts as a sport, but if we had to, we would assert that they definitely do qualify as an “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.” Watching a gaggle of retired football players commentate sweaty bakers sliding around a kitchen carrying jars of sprinkles trying to beat the clock before facing judges is about as “sport” as we’re going to get between football games. So grab your ice cold beer, or maybe even a peppermint hot chocolate and nestle into your butt groove because sports aren’t cancelled just yet.

If you’ve ever been an armchair coach, then baking shows are for you. Sure, you might have had a great stint in the AAA when you played peewee, but it’s armchair at best when you criticize someone’s stick handling or layup technique. That’s part of what sports gives us: the ability to criticize a finely tuned professional for something we could never do. And baking competitions, sports fans, give us more of just that. Few of us have perfectly tempered chocolate or achieved a flawless flake in our pie crusts, but that won’t stop viewers from commenting “that’s never going to set up,” as a panicked contestant smears microwaved chocolate onto a silicone mold.

Perhaps Duff Goldman in a Bruins jersey isn’t sporty enough for you, even as he sits upon his Holiday Baking Championship judge’s seat. But don’t worry, former NFL and CFL Quarterback and color commentator, Jesse Palmer, is here with that signature cadence and impossible shoulder width to remind you this is a sport. Did someone suggest to you that cookie decoration isn’t athletic enough for you to bark “come on, hustle!” at from over your Hungry-Man dinner? Eddie Jackson, host of Christmas Cookie Challenge and former NFL Cornerback has other things to say about it.  

If you miss the instant replay, the slow-motion moments of a questionable injury you wish you didn’t see but can’t bare to look away from, Holiday Wars could be your flavor. As bakers show up week to week to compete with cake and sugar, you’ll almost definitely be bombarded with slow motion clips of large sugar pieces falling to the ground and shattering. The familiar calamity.

As you unbutton your jeans after that extra slice of pumpkin pie and consider what sport to throw your eyeballs at after football is done, do yourself a favor and click your way through to the backlog of holiday baking competitions. Get ready to hurl your unsolicited advice at professionals who can’t hear you through the TV, cheer along with Hail Mary cake stacking, and feel the emotional weight of upsets when the favorite serves up an underbaked crust. Sports fans might feel without as ESPN continues to reflect on trades for unscheduled seasons, but you’re all just a few clicks away from the next best thing.
