The 2025 summer blockbuster season is going to kick off with Marvel’s Thunderbolts on May 2, but you can get an early start to the annual summer movie schedule with Captain America: Brave New World now available at home, available via digital on-demand platforms.

You can buy or rent Captain America: Brave New World on Prime Video, Apple TV, Fandango at Home, Google Play and YouTube. A streaming premiere has not been announced at this time, but we know that whenever that time comes, Captain America: Brave New World will be streaming on Disney Plus.

Of course, with production underway on the next big Marvel team-up, Avengers: Doomsday, if you want to know the characters and some potential storylines coming into that movie, you’re probably best served catching up with Captain America: Brave New World.

Anthony Mackie leads his first Marvel movie, reprising his role as Sam Wilson who has officially taken on the shield of Captain America. He soon finds himself in the middle of an international incident and must find the root of a nefarious global plan. The movie also stars Harrison Ford, Danny Ramirez, Shira Haas, Carl Lumbly, Tim Blake Nelson and Giancarlo Esposito.

The first of three Marvel movies in the 2025 new movie slate (the other two are the previously mentioned Thunderbolts and The Fantastic Four: First Steps), Captain America: Brave New World is currently the second highest-grossing movie at the US box office this year, only trailing A Minecraft Movie (the MCU movie is No. 3 at the worldwide box office). But if you missed it in movie theaters, you can now watch Captain America: Brave New World at home.

The film didn’t receive the warmest reception from critics, but fans were a bit more accepting of the movie, as evidenced by its 48% “Rotten” score from critics but a 79% positive rating from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

Just as an FYI, Tuesday, April 15, also marks the debut of a couple other notable 2025 movies on digital on-demand platforms — the Jason Statham action movie A Working Man and the horror movie The Woman in the Yard.

Check out the Captain America: Brave New World trailer right here if you need any final convincing on whether or not to get the movie on-demand:

February may be the shortest month of the year, but there is plenty coming to movie theaters in February 2025 that movie fans can get excited about. And we want to hear from you, our What to Watch readers, on the movies you are most looking forward to seeing in theaters this month.

The highest-profile movie hitting screens this month is without a doubt Captain America: Brave New World. This is the first movie for Anthony Mackie’s Captain America after he officially took over the mantle in the Disney Plus series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. The movie has definitely been marketed as a political thriller (with plenty of superhero action, including a red hulk), which definitely feels like a throwback to one of the most well-regarded MCU movies to date, Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Beyond the latest entry from the MCU, other notable 2025 new movies premiering in February include some alternative Valentine’s Day programming in Heart Eyes and Love Hurts; the US premiere of the third Paddington movie, Paddington in Peru; dark comedy/horror movie The Monkey; and some smaller movies hoping to find an audience, including Barry Keoghan’s Irish drama Bring Them Down, Paolo Sorrentino’s latest Parthenope, a Daisy Ridley action movie Cleaner, family-friendly titles like The Unbreakable Boy and The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie, survival thriller Last Breath and indie drama My Dead Friend Zoe.

But the movie that I am most excited to see is the surprise Best Picture nominee I’m Still Here. From Brazilian filmmaker Walter Salles, I knew very little about this movie until lead actress Fernanda Torres earned a surprise Golden Globe win for Best Actress — Drama. She and the movie then followed that up with Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Best Actress and Best International Film. I’m Still Here centers on a mother who has to reinvent herself in 1971 Brazil when the military dictatorship enacts an act of violence against her family. It’s the only Best Picture nominee that I’m missing from this year’s field, and with its 96% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes I’m excited to finally get a chance to watch I’m Still Here.

Now it's your turn. Vote in the poll below, which features 10 of the biggest titles coming to movie theaters in February and let us know which one you are most excited for. If the movie you're most excited to see isn't listed, you can click "other" and let us know in the comments what your looking forward to watching this month.
What February 2025 movie are you most excited for?
Poll closes Sunday, February 9, at 11:59 pm ET

Here is a complete look at the February 2025 movie release schedule to let you keep track of all the movies coming out this month (note, some movies may not be immediately available in all locations):

February 7

Armand

Bring Them Down

Heart Eyes

I’m Still Here

Love Hurts

Parthenope

February 14

Captain America: Brave New World

Paddington in Peru

February 21

Cleaner

The Monkey

The Unbreakable Boy

February 28

The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie

Last Breath

My Dead Friend Zoe

Uppercut

Vicious

Here's what you need to know about how to watch Captain America: Brave New World.

It is the first of three new Marvel movies releasing in 2025, with the other two being Thunderbolts and The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

Captain America: Brave New World cast

Anthony Mackie has been in the MCU since Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but now his Sam Wilson is the official Captain America, leading the way for this new movie. Mackie is a Hollywood veteran, having starred in the likes of Million Dollar Baby, The Hurt Locker, The Adjustment Bureau and Twisted Metal.

While Mackie is taking over the Captain America mantle, Harrison Ford is taking on a legacy MCU role, but under different circumstances. Ford was cast as Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross following the passing of William Hurt, who had played the character since The Incredible Hulk. Ford is a screen legend who does not appear to be slowing down despite his age. Just last year he reprised his classic character Indiana Jones for the final time with Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and had a hit TV show with 1923.

Thunderbolt Ross isn't the only connection to The Incredible Hulk appearing in Brave New World. Tim Blake Nelson is reprising his role of Dr. Samuel Sterns from the early Marvel movie, as is Liv Tyler, who played Betty Ross, Thunderbolt Ross' daughter and love interest to Bruce Banner (does that mean a Mark Ruffalo cameo is possible?).

Other confirmed cast members for Captain America: Brave New World are The Falcon and the Winter Soldier stars Carl Lumbly and Danny Ramirez, reprising their roles of Isaiah Bradley and Joaquin Torress, respectively. Also making their return to the MCU. New to Marvel are Shira Haas (Unorthodox), who is playing a character named Sabra, Giancarlo Esposito as a mysterious new villain and Xosha Roquemore (The Sex Lives of College Girls).

Captain America: Brave New World plot

Here is the synopsis for Captain America: Brave New World from Marvel:

"Anthony Mackie returns as the high-flying hero Sam Wilson, who’s officially taken up the mantle of Captain America. After meeting with newly elected U.S. President Thaddeus Ross, Sam finds himself in the middle of an international incident. Here are some of the notable quotes:

Anthony Mackie on how his younger self would react to him playing Captain America:

"My younger self would be very surprised. I would hope he would be proud. I would hope he would be as excited as I am. I know he would be very overwhelmed emotionally and appreciative. Coming from New Orleans and the neighborhood that I grew up in, which was a great neighborhood, the idea of going outside of that and reaching this far outside the boundaries of my confines wasn’t seen or even could be dreamed of. So to now be sitting here and to see this, that was never in my purview, I just wanted to do Shakespeare plays and Ibsen. It’s just amazing."

Harrison Ford on joining Marvel:

"I’m beginning to understand it’s a big family and I’m a small part of it. I’m glad to be here. I’ve always watched them and the attraction of Marvel films for me is watching wonderful actors have a good time playing. So when the opportunity came along for me to be a part of it I was grateful for the opportunity. It’s a whole new genre and a new audience for me. It was fun."

Danny Ramirez on how his character mirrors his own journey:

"...[T[here’s a beautiful life imitating art and art imitating life moment where I will show up to set and realise that Joaquin’s journey and my journey parallels quite perfectly. Many days all I had to do for character work was watch Anthony on set and see how he navigated and how I could help. That made the job incredibly easy."

Captain America: Brave New World is produced by Kevin Feige and Nate Moore.

After the strong ratings run of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is ready to continue its story with Sam Wilson's Captain America. The Hollywood Reporter dropped the news today after the Season 1 finale of the show.

It's also been confirmed that Malcolm Spellman, showrunner and writer on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, will pen the script alongside Dalan Musson (who also worked on the series).

We won't know much else on the project until things get a little bit further into development, but you can likely expect Sebastian Stan's Bucky Barnes to be involved in some capacity. There could also be potential for Danny Ramirez' Joaquin Torres, given his future as Falcon as well as Emily VanCamp's Sharon Carter .

As Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) now holds the mantle of Captain America, the new film will focus on his journey. While folks are questioning Chris Evans' return as the original Cap — don't expect it. Evans would return if asked, but there's no narrative reason to water down Sam's story with the involvement of the past hero (no matter how much we may love him).

There is currently no director on board to helm the project, and Marvel was predictably pretty tight lipped on the matter. Given that the project was just announced, fans can probably expect to see it sometime in Phase 5. We'll have more news as it comes in for the next Captain America.

Our assumption is that this is in the exhibit in the Smithsonian that we've seen in earlier Captain America films. In it we see memorabilia of Steve's life from the modern era to all the way back when he was lying on his registration card in an attempt to go fight the Nazis. The speech is as follows:

“We need new heroes. Ones suited for the times we’re in. Symbols are nothing without the women and men that give them meaning. And this thing… I don’t know if there’s ever been a greater symbol. But it’s more about the man who propped it up. And he’s gone. So today we honor Steve’s legacy, but also? We look to the future. Thank you, Captain America. This belongs to you.”

It's an exceptional speech from a man who, for all intents and purposes, had become as much of a brother to Steve as Bucky Barnes. While Sam's wrong in his belief that he is not yet meant to carry that shield, he's right in all the words he uses to honor his lost friend. Government officials on site agree with teary-eyed nods. They thank Sam for his tribute and they speak in favor of the United States of America's favorite son. There's just one problem with that.

The United States Government canonically hated Steve Rogers for 7 years (13, if you count the Blip, where enemies of the state didn't matter) before his disappearance.

MORE: How to watch all the Marvel movies in order
ALSO: Watch Disney Plus on Apple TV

Folks who misunderstand Captain America as a beacon of Nationalistic drivel believe him to be the government's puppet (that's John Walker, actually), but as both the comics and his stand-alone films prove — that couldn't be further from the truth. For all its flaws and propaganda-level depictions of the government Disney has, at the very least, gotten that part correct. Steve Rogers never, not once a day in his life, followed through on an order he didn't believe in. He was never a government lackey. He's the idealogical belief of a true American. You know, the one we put on the tin. One that embodies all of the things the Statue of Liberty actually says, and takes things like "land of the free" at their face value rather what many Americans really mean it as (land of the free so long as you're a white dude). In his famous monologue (delivered perfectly as a quote attributed to Peggy Carter rather than Steve in the MCU), Rogers said this:

Doesn't matter what the press says. Doesn't matter what the politicians or the mobs say. Doesn't matter if the whole country decides that something wrong is something right. This nation was founded on one principle above all else: the requirement that we stand up for what we believe, no matter the odds or the consequences. When the mob and the press and the whole world tell you to move, your job is to plant yourself like a tree beside the river of truth, and tell the whole world — "No, you move."

And that's why Steve Rogers "died" an enemy of the state.

We'll undoubtedly hear nonsense about how he was pardoned for saving the world, and how the real patriots were always rooting for him, and that was all just one biiiigggg misunderstanding. But make no mistake — the American government hated Steve Rogers. Tony Stark helped them on that journey, but that's a different editorial for another time. The United States government would have tossed Steve Rogers in a black site prison and experimented on him till they managed to extract the super soldier serum if given the proper chance. Their love for Captain America died the second they realized they couldn't use him as a tool to carry out their inequitable, warped "values".

The idea of a single person in the American government weeping over the loss of Rogers when they spent all their time hunting him pre-blip is a joke, and a tremendously unfunny one at that. The fact that they used Sam's grief makes it even more infuriating. But the real question is whether or not Disney's going to do something satisfying about that.

Here's the thing: the annoyance at the government is meant to be there. If not because of the fact that their mourning over the loss of their "hero" is a boldfaced lie, then because they immediately plucked the shield from the exhibit and put it in the hand of a canonically White Nationalist piece of human garbage (yes, yes — John Walker gets "better" — irrelevant). But with how often Disney partners with the U.S. Military — a partnership that requires said military be depicted favorably — you've got to wonder if we're actually going to see anything real done with this moment. Given said history, it seems most likely that the same shady officials who barely waited for the shield to cool from Sam's touch will be written in a way that signals they never knew what they were getting into with their new lapdog. And what an exhausting story that would be!

Why WandaVision's weekly release only helped the show

What's the deal with Agatha Harkness?

How WandaVision used the long pop culture history of the Salem Witch trials to its advantage

We need to talk about Tyler Hayward

WandaVision Finale Review

The WandaVision Finale failed Monica Rambeau

Wanda Maximoff's pain is finally given the attention it deserves in WandaVision

Will Chris Evans' Captain America return to the MCU? Probably not. But let's talk about why it's not the best idea anyway.

2020 was a year without a Marvel film. That wouldn't seem so shocking were we not in the dominant age of the studio, who now release on average three movies a year and utterly overwhelm our worldwide pop culture consciousness. Yet even the might of Kevin Feige and Disney couldn't not overcome a literal pandemic, so 2021 will be a year of catch-up for this already legendary cinematic universe. Following the grandeur of Avengers: Endgame and the official climax of the saga’s third phase, the MCU is set to move into the realms of the cosmic, freely bending space, time, and alternate realities in a way that most superhero adaptations have understandably shied away from for decades.

The cast is expanding, the plotlines becoming evermore labyrinthine, and the heart of this tale moving beyond the core cast of the first tier. Tony Stark has passed, as has Natasha Romanoff (although we still have Black Widow to look forward to), and Steve Rogers went off to live the life he could have had had he not volunteered for the super serum. Well, technically Captain America isn’t dead, and that’s something that Disney may want to take advantage of, if current reports claiming that Evans is in the process of signing onto future movies as Steve are anything to go by.

Evans took to Twitter to deny the claim, although it’s worth remembering that Tatiana Maslany also initially refuted reports that she would be playing She-Hulk before the casting was confirmed by Disney themselves. Whatever may or may not be happening behind the scenes may take a few weeks or even months to hammer out, especially if a bigger payday, Robert Downey Jr. style, is on the table.

There are certainly many options available to Marvel Studios for bringing Steve back to the big and small screen in some form. Good old-fashioned flashbacks are always reliable, or maybe Evans is happy to hang up the workout boots and stick to old-age makeup appearances from now on. Then there are alternate Steves, evil Steves, clone Steves, the myriad Steves that Doctor Strange may bump into as he treads through the multiverse, or just random dudes who look like Steve for no reason beyond sheer coincidence. The great joy of working from superhero comic books is that the possibilities are essentially limitless. If it seems too bonkers or ludicrous, don’t worry because it probably still made an appearance in at least one issue.

That’s a fascinating area of storytelling for a traditional blockbuster franchise to enter into (and yes, for as daring and intricately composed as the MCU is, it still proudly adheres to the most well-worn tropes of the genre.) Hollywood seems hesitant to break out beyond a singular timeline for its work, as evidenced by DC and Warner Bros. initially turning down Todd Phillips’s idea for a solo one-off Joker movie for fear that it would confuse audiences. Viewers are different now, and the MCU is the biggest franchise in history and its looping multistranded narratives are followed with ease by the casual majority. Perhaps they’re ready for a new frontier of what-ifs, mirror universes, and stuff that shouldn’t even be explained beyond ‘just accept it.’

It’s a possible future that certainly opens a lot of doors but what of the ones it closes? The MCU, and indeed the modern blockbuster age, has been heavily criticized for its occasionally thin character work and inauthentic emotional beats. An exception to that rule has been the narrative of Steve Rogers. He evolved from the ultimate kind-hearted underdog to America embodied, then tangled with his legacy in a major way, battling with issues of decency over legality, formed a variety of complex relationships with those around him, then helped to save the universe before hanging up immeasurable power in favor of the simplicity of love and peace with Peggy Carter. The last time we see him in Avengers: Endgame, he is the old man he never thought he would become, and he’s never seemed more comfortable with himself. He’s not dead but it’s clear that his story is over, and that his true ending will be a private one for him and his family. It’s a much-earned moment of unabashed poignancy in a franchise that typically favors spectacle and quips over all else.

What does that ending mean if, all of a sudden, Chris Evans is back and we’re just getting on with things? Sure, comic books do it all the time, but the medium of the comic book movie as defined by Marvel Studios’ own rules is a very different beast. This is clearly something that Feige and company were aware of, as they spent all this time hyping up Steve’s journey as the emotional center of their sprawling story and making audiences aware of the real stakes at play, both with the ultimate finger snap of doom and with the decades’ long conclusion to his narrative. His final scene, a flashback to him quietly dancing with Peggy back in the 1940s, together at last, is supposed to impact you in a specific climactic way. And it does. Can it still maintain that heft if Steve returns in any way, shape, or form?

The Cap question also leads into a wider problem with modern media. We're in a post-cancellation age. Nothing ends anymore because reboots, sequels, prequels, and reinventions are ten-a-penny for any IP of a vaguely memorable nature. Not everything has to have a definitive ending, as comic books and soap operas have proven, but film is a trickier medium and maintaining that emotional core as you stop and start in this manner will prove near impossible. It also weakens the pre-existing stories we cherish, whether it's the ways the terrible Sex and the City movies spoil the show's final episode or Lucasfilm's refusal to leave the Skywalkers behind in Star Wars. Rather than growing beyond the limits of traditional storytelling, this approach ends up making the universe and those who inhabit it seem so very small.

Entertainment has always been an industry absolutely rife with rumors. Ace scoopers do their best to get the biggest stories out as fast as they can in order to pay tribute to the click gods so that their websites can survive. Give that you’re reading this on website—we can’t really judge. If you were on the internet today, you know that today’s flavor of the week is the potential for Chris Evans to reprise his role as Captain America in the MCU.

So… will Steve Rogers return to the present in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? I don’t want to burst anyone’s bubble here, but the answer is very probably a no. It’s not even because Chris Evans denied the rumors shortly after. Marvel made Hailee Steinfeld and Tatiana Maslany lie for months! It’s more because there’s just no justifiable cause to do so.

Though this is a comic book franchise and these guys never stay dead, that’s not necessarily a problem with Captain America right now. Not only is Steve Rogers still very much alive, he’s also comfortable and happy with two canonical successors to the Captain America shield taking care of things in the present-day. The Steve Rogers iteration of Cap could conceivably return for a myriad of reasons, but there’s really no cause for it to happen. The MCU isn’t big on endings, but his is one of the most satisfying tales that they’ve managed to tell. It seems unlikely that they’d be quick to “undo” that by tossing him back into the story now.

If we do see Rogers return, it better be in a way that we see Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) return with him. Steve might have gotten a satisfying close, but the MCU did Peggy dirty and fans are still clamoring for more of her story.

If you’ve come here, you’re probably wondering how to watch Captain America: The Winter Soldier. We’ll have your answers and more down below, but first, let’s talk about the film. At the time of its release in 2014, Captain America: The Winter Soldier was widely recognized as one of the best MCU films from a cinematic perspective.

With a unique plot, elements of espionage, witty dialogue and a ton of action, directors Joe and Anthony Russo intertwined a long string of MCU plot-lines while breathing new life into the franchise. The film follows the country’s greatest hero, Captain America as he works alongside the organization that brought together the Avengers Initiative — S.H.I.E.L.D., which is run by Col. Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson).

The duo peels back the curtains to discover an evil plot within the organization they represent that puts the world at risk. To make matters worse, they’re forced to face off against The Winter Soldier, a mysterious figure who turns out to be a figure from Cap’s past. The internal conflict that Steve Rogers faces is played out masterfully by Chris Evans, who’s aided by great performances by Scarlett Johansson, Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan.

How to watch the Marvel movies in order

How to watch Captain America: The Winter Soldier on Disney+:

Watching Captain America: The Winter Soldier is easier than ever with a subscription to Disney+, which is the ideal way to view this film and the other installments of the MCU. At $5.99 per month, subscribers gain access to most of the MCU catalog, including this film, in addition to a large selection of television programs and films. However, there’s another option to consider in the Disney+ Bundle, which packages three premier streaming services for the price of two subscriptions.

With the bundle, you’ll gain access to Disney+, ESPN+ and Hulu at a discounted rate. That way, you can meet nearly all of your streaming needs while catering to people in your household with differing interests.

How to watch Captain America: The Winter Soldier elsewhere:

Watching Captain America: The Winter Soldier elsewhere is relatively simple. If you’d prefer to rent the film elsewhere, there are a variety of outlets you can consider. At $3.99, you can rent this movie on Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, the iTunes store, the Google Play store and YouTube. The film is also available to purchase on Amazon Prime Video for $19.99.

Should you watch Captain America: The Winter Soldier on Disney+ or elsewhere?

Of course, this is a matter of opinion. If you’d rather rent it then go ahead, but subscribing to Disney+ saves money for anyone hoping to check out the MCU catalog. Renting costs nearly the same price as the monthly rate you’d pay to gain access to Disney+ for only a 48-hour window to watch one film. With Disney+, you can watch pretty much any of the MCU films, including Captain America: The Winter Soldier, as often as you’d like whenever you’d like to.

Everyone’s needs are different, but Disney+ is a strong route if you’re trying to catch up on the Captain America series in anticipation for its spin-off, Falcon and The Winter Soldier, which is set to release on the platform in 2021.

The four phases of the MCU

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is made up of four phases, with the "Infinity Saga" making up Phase 3.
