All Creatures Great and Small star Nicholas Ralph has revealed why there's a big time jump in the new season.

The action in season 6 moves forward to May 1945, nearly four years on from the events of the last series, with the conflict drawing to a close.

Nicholas, who plays James Herriot, tells us they were concerned about "getting bogged down" in the war years.

"It felt like we could get bogged down if we kept going through the war years, so this is the beginning of the next chapter in their lives. All of them have changed. But now it's a return to basics, back to veterinary life."

Co-star Rachel Shenton, who plays Helen, also backed the decision. "I was pleased that was what we were doing. Now there is a feeling of hope, and they can look forward and see that there's a world beyond the hell that everyone has lived through."

The big change for James and Helen is that they now have not one but two children.

Rachel explains: "Yes, they've had little Rosie. James and Helen's relationship matures every season, which is gorgeous, and now they’re a family of four, there’s a lot of navigating life but also fun.”

Nicholas adds, "James and Helen love being in each other's company with their kids. And one of the joys for James is that Jimmy is just over four years old now, so he can come on the vet visits with him, like in the opening episode when a lamb is born."

As for what creatures we will be seeing in the new series, which also sees Samuel West back as Siegfried Farnon and Callum Woodhouse as Tristan, Nicholas says: "Well, the miniature horse had the best hair — like [singer] Rod Stewart in his prime! And we have a story regarding a greyhound track, and one lovely whippet was played by a sweet rescue dog called Danny Boy. And we, of course, have Tricki [the pampered Pekinese belonging to Mrs Pumphrey, portrayed by Patricia Hodge] back, too!”

The new series will see Tristan arrive home from serving in Italy with the Royal Army Veterinary Corps, and stalwart housekeeper Mrs Hall (Anna Madeley) has also had some time away.

All Creatures Great and Small season 6 begins on 5 Thursday, September 25 at 9 pm.

Actor Kola Bokinni and his sister DJ Yinka Bokinni, Outnumbered siblings Tyger Drew-Honey and Ramona Marquez, and Stacey Dooley and her partner, actor and dancer Kevin Clifton, compete to name as many songs and artists as possible, with the best pair playing for up to £10,000 in the final round.

The Royal Rich List, Five, 7.30 pm

We don’t need to be told that the Royal Family is incredibly rich and has billions of pounds’ worth of assets – these are people who have spent their lives in palaces, have crown jewels and can travel in an actual gold coach (OK, it’s not real gold, but it’s worth around £2 million). This feature-length documentary gets down to the nitty-gritty a bit more than the average Saturday-night royal content on 5, as it hears from royal commentators and financial experts on who owns what in one of the world’s richest families.

A wave of paranoia engulfs a small town when a mother stumbles across an online post about a convicted child killer living in her neighbourhood under a new identity. As a newcomer to the area, Joanna (Rachel Shenton, All Creatures Great and Small) wants to know more and is soon sharing the information with a group of mums at her son’s new school. But as her mission to uncover the killer’s identity intensifies, there are devastating consequences. A great cast, including Emily Atack and Joanne Whalley, get this five-part adaptation of Lesley Kara’s bestselling novel off to a gripping start. The Girlfriend, Prime Video

There’s a touch of Single White Female about Prime Video’s new psychological thriller as Robin Wright (House of Cards) plays devoted mother Laura, a successful businesswoman who’ll stop at nothing to protect her only son Daniel (The Road Trip’s Laurie Davidson) from his suspicious new partner, Cherry (House of the Dragon’s Olivia Cooke). With each episode in this six-parter told from dual perspectives, you’ll find yourselves switching sides throughout – is Cherry a manipulative social climber, or is Laura a paranoid, possessive mum? – making this well-executed drama all the more compelling. Lands as a box set.

Stranded on Honeymoon Island, BBC1, 9 pm

If you haven’t watched this yet but need a handle on what exactly it is, think Married at First Sight crossed with Survivor, with a dash of Made in Chelsea. After three episodes, we’re invested in the six couples who were matched after speed-dating and dispatched to an island in the Philippines. A meeting at ‘Couples Cove’ gave them a chance to compare their burgeoning relationships with others, leading Mae to feel upset about the lack of romance with Moray. Will that change this week? Continues until Friday.

Harper Matheson (played by Jessica Redmayne) and her sister Dana (Ally Harris) are about to find themselves homeless on Home and Away! (1:45pm - see our TV Guide for listings).

Their landlady, Irene Roberts (Lynne McGranger), has put her beach house up FOR SALE.

And now Sergeant David Langham (Jeremy Lindsay Taylor) and his daughter Jo (Maddison Brown) will be moving in!

Harper's predicament weighs heavily on her ex-fiance, Tane Parata (Ethan Browne).

Especially as Tane is also the dad of Harper's baby son, Archie.

Tane asks housemate, Cash Newman (Nicholas Cartwright), his thoughts on inviting Harper and Archie to move in with them!

But is inviting his ex-fiancee to move in such a good idea, since Tane is now dating again.

And so far, Harper hasn't shown a whole lot of love for Tane's new girlfriend, Jo!

Roo Stewart (Georgie Parker) is worried she may lose foster child Cohen Luther (Nathan Murray).

DNA test results have now confirmed that Adrian Purcell (Tom Matthews) is Cohen's biological dad.

However, when Cohen and Adrian spend some time together, things do not go well when Adrian starts to say bad things about the lad's mum Samantha, who is currently serving a prison sentence...

While looking around, Jo steps into one of the downstairs bedrooms and notices a framed photo of Tane Parata (Ethan Browne).

Jo quickly realises that the bedroom must belong to Tane's ex-fiancee/baby mama, Harper Matheson (Jessica Redmayne)!

Unfortunately, Harper happens to return home at that moment and is not exactly happy when she finds Tane's new ladyfriend, Jo, poking about in her bedroom!

Will things continue to remain awkward between the two women?

Leah Patterson (Ada Nicodemou) wants to help Irene Roberts (Lynne McGranger) plan her worldwide travels.

Leah, her husband Justin (James Stewart), nephew Theo (Matt Evans) and friend Marilyn Chambers (Emily Symons) gather at Irene's house to unveil a large scale map of the world.

Now all Irene needs to do is to decide WHERE she wants to visit first!

ELSEWHERE in Summer Bay, foster mum Roo Stewart (Georgie Parker) is faced with having a serious chat with Cohen Luther (Nathan Murray).

The Sunshine Murders, 5, 2.15 pm

New Zealand farmer Shirley Rangi (Emily Corcoran) fetches up in Athens in this first episode of a ‘cosy crime’ series, originally scheduled to air on Tuesday, September 2. She’s there in search of her father, but unexpectedly finds a secret half-sister, Detective Helen Moustakas (Dora Chrysikou). At first, Helen finds her to be an unwelcome annoyance, but Shirley’s shrewd observational skills and insights prove surprisingly useful during Helen’s investigation into the death of an archaeologist. Look out for Peter Andre as pathologist George. The series continues with new stories every afternoon until Friday.

Thailand: The Dark Side of Paradise, BBC3, 10 pm

It’s been fascinating to watch 2018 Love Island contestant Zara McDermott develop into an accomplished presenter of documentaries, and here she delves into the highs and lows of holiday haven Thailand. The first episode sees Zara explore Bangkok from a backpacker’s point of view, before delving into its bustling red light district. Continues until Wednesday and is also available as a box set on BBC iPlayer.

Jamie: Eat Yourself Healthy, Channel 4, 8 pm

We’re all well used to newspaper reports on the next ‘superfood’, or consumer shows telling us why we need this or that trending ingredient in our fridges or larders, so what’s been refreshing about Jamie Oliver’s latest series is bringing the science together with recipes that look genuinely delicious. In this week’s episode, for example, we may know that fermented foods are good for the gut, but how about using kimchi in a sauce for a seared tuna dish to boost our bone health? Other highlights include a squash risotto with potential to help with our eyesight, plus a look at how compounds in kiwi fruit could aid sleep.

The Rumour starts on Channel 5 on Wednesday, September 10 at 9 pm. Episodes two and three air on Thursday, September 11 and Friday, September 12 at the same time. The remaining two episodes air on Wednesday, September 17 and Thursday, September 18.

However, when Joanna brings up the rumour with a group of school mums, there are devastating consequences for the community and Joanna herself as the whispers grow louder and suspicions spiral.

"I loved the ordinariness of Joanna," says Rachel Shenton, who plays her. "You see these shows all the time on TV where a character will be brilliant at something, a brilliant detective, a brilliant doctor, but with Joanna what I found intriguing was there is none of that. She doesn’t have a particularly good job, house, wardrobe or lifestyle. She is just trying to make her life work like everybody else, she’s very relatable.

"You see her becoming completely obsessed trying to work out the truth. It’s like an itch that she can’t help but scratch. Her relentless pursuit of the truth becomes a major part of the story. People get hurt and lose their lives because of hearsay. The story shows just how much damage gossip can do."

Debbie is the queen bee school mum who is an influencer, lives in a huge fancy house, and loves to gossip.

Rachel is a prison guard and also the school mum whom Joanna forms the closest connection with.

Much of the series was filmed in Budapest, Hungary which doubles as Flinstead.

"It was my first time there and I wish I’d had some more downtime to explore," says Rachel. "On the occasional day off I had a wander along the Danube, which was very beautiful. I was pregnant with my son at the time and so was probably a bit more tired than usual but I was lucky that I wasn’t suffering from morning sickness. The cast managed a couple of dinners out together."

Irene Roberts (played by Lynne McGranger) gets an unexpected house visit from Alf Stewart (Ray Meagher) on today's episode of Home and Away (1:45pm - see our TV Guide for listings).

So things must be serious!

Alf and Leah Patterson (Ada Nicodemou) are alarmed about Irene's sudden decision to sell her beach house and leave Summer Bay to travel the world.

However, Irene is offended by her friends challenging her plans.

They either need to get behind her.

Or get out of the way!

Can Leah and Alf accept that Irene wants to travel the world and revisit with old friends while she still can?

The music duet between Remi Carter (Adam Rowland) and Eden Fowler (Stephanie Panozzo) is officially ON!

Though reluctant Remi certainly took some convincing.

Remi's girlfriend, Bree Cameron (Juliet Godwin), hopes their LIVE performance at Salt will help both Remi and Eden move on after the break-up of their former band, Lyrik.

The couple enjoy flying a kite and some nice cuddle time on the beach.

However, when Dana returns home to Irene Roberts's (Lynne McGranger) beach house, she finds friend John Palmer (Shane Withington) trying to convince Irene to slow down and stop giving away her possessions.

Irene later confides in Sonny that she has been thinking a lot about the various people who have stayed at her beach house over the past 30 plus years.

Irene has been feeling nostalgic since she was diagnosed with Alzhenimer's disease.

Sonny encourages Irene to follow her dreams.

So the very next morning, Irene makes a BIG announcement...

She has decided to sell her beach house and go and travel the world while she still can!

Every time that Jo Langham (Maddison Brown) tries to have a civilised conversation with her sister, Lacey (Sophea Pennington), she finds herself ACCUSED of something terrible!

Lacey believes Jo is to blame for the private investigator dropping the case about their mum's death.

However, it turns out that it's not Jo's fault.

So WHY was the investigation suddenly dropped?

After her latest clash with Lacey, Jo is happy when she runs into Tane Parata (Ethan Browne).

Is there a chance these two can finally have an uninterrupted date?

Tane and Jo attempt a catch-up at Salt.

Irene makes it clear that she wants to start getting her affairs in order before it's too late...

None of them want to lose Irene from their lives anytime soon...

While down by the beach, Roo and Cohen encounter Adrian Purcell (Tom Matthews).

The Yorkshire Vet, 5, 8 pm

It's not often that Peter Wright mentions his past working with James Herriot, so it’s a lovely reminder when he name-drops his former mentor. ‘My old boss Alf Wight used to say, “First you need to catch your patient…”’ is his advice as he tries to round up some rebel sheep with an energy that belies his 40 years in the profession, as he needs to inject them against a nasty pox called orf. Even more unpleasant is the eye infection plaguing Ozzy the llama, and Julian Norton’s surgery to tackle it is a definite look-away-now moment. Plus, a heart-warming follow-up as, after treating mountain rescue dog Kenzie for her red ear, Matt Jackson-Smith gets to help her in her training – by playing a body!

Midsomer Murders, ITV1, 8 pm

An organic bakery in the newly restored Larkton's Mill causes resentment in Lower Blissingham, with many of the old village businesses struggling, traffic having increased and rumours that owners Tom and Chrissie Larkton are planning to expand. Highwayman Inn landlady Denise Bantrig organises a protest group against the couple, and is supported by Maria, who runs the old village cafe and will not let her business go down without a fight. Their complaints are not taken too seriously until several people are dosed with a dangerous hallucinogenic at a Midsummer's Eve party, with Barnaby and Winter called in to investigate, and the situation escalates when a farmer is murdered.

The Guest, BBC1, 9 pm

A chance encounter between two women from very different backgrounds has deadly repercussions in this four-part psychological thriller set in Wales. Fran (Eve Myles) is a businesswoman who employs down-on-her-luck cleaner Ria (Gabrielle Creevy) after seeing her advert in her local supermarket. However, when Ria is asked to house-sit while Fran’s away, a terrible tragedy unites them in ways they could never have predicted and events take a dark turn. Great performances from the leads and nice scenery propel this drama along, and the shocking cliffhanger of this opener is certain to leave you wanting to know what happens next. Also available on iPlayer as a box set.

The Runarounds, Prime Video

Starring real-life musicians Axel Ellis, Jesse Golliher, William Lipton, Zendé Murdock and Jeremy Yun, this drama series follows teenage high-school graduates from North Carolina who must decide whether to get jobs, go to college or risk everything to play music in their rock band called The Runarounds. This eight-parter has original music performed by the band, and the stars have never acted before. This is a bit like an older version of School of Rock.

Jamie: Eat Yourself Healthy, Channel 4, 8 pm

Ironically, you will need to be a couch potato for an hour to take in all the useful info in Jamie Oliver’s latest series about being healthy, which shares not only easy-to-follow recipes but wellbeing tips. This episode focuses on brain function, starting with a salmon tray bake with harissa-spiced chickpeas and couscous. Then he shares two meals for energy: chicken balls in a vegetable broth for the B vitamins and iron-filled spinach and lentil fritters. And, upending expectations in true Jamie-style, he wraps the benefits of beans in pastry and makes a chocolate dessert – both of which, the science shows, are good for us.

Alison & Larry: Billericay to Barry, U&Dave, 9 pm

As friends and Gavin & Stacey co-stars Alison Steadman and Larry Lamb continue their road trip, this week’s stops include Blenheim Palace and Bath. It’s a pleasantly meandering journey – a bit like their experience in Blenheim’s maze – and the pair are happy to take a detour, especially if it involves a cream tea. Larry’s also keen to keep up his daily habit of cold-water swimming, even in the snow. A puppet-making class is more Alison’s style and it prompts her to share some childhood memories as this gentle series winds its way to next week’s conclusion.

The Jessop family get into enough mischief when they’re at home – so goodness knows what’s going to happen as mum Rachel (Katherine Parkinson), dad Paul (Jim Howick) and the rest of the clan take a holiday to the Mediterranean island of Malta. The trip is something of a reunion for Rachel and brother Robin (Tom Basden) with their estranged father Michael – played by Sherwood actor Robert Glenister – who by all accounts wasn’t the most hands-on dad when the siblings were growing up. As Rachel attempts to take him to task, disaster strikes when baby Atlas goes missing – only the Jessops can lose a child who shares his name with a collection of maps, and that’s why we love them!

Mrs Brown’s Boys, BBC1, 9.30pm

We left Mrs Brown (Brendan O’Carroll) in a bad way the last time we saw her a couple of weeks ago – is it the end for Agnes? Of course not. In no time at all, she’s back home and causing havoc on a mobility scooter she’s insisted on ‘pimping up’, while the church has arranged for a home help – none other than arch-enemy Hillary (Susie Blake)! That leaves Agnes with plenty of time to enjoy a racy book that Cathy (Jennifer Gibney) has left lying around, although volunteering to write for the parish newsletter turns out to have been slightly ambitious, and leads to Agnes becoming embroiled in a spy subplot involving a listening device hidden in an enormous sombrero!

KPopped, Apple TV Plus

Join US rapper Megan Thee Stallion and Gangnam Style singer Psy, who host this exciting eight-parter, which sees musical showdowns featuring East and West stars. The brand-new concept follows Western artists, including Patti LaBelle, Spice Girls’ Mel B and Emma Bunton, Kylie Minogue, Boy George and Jess Glynne as they reimagine their biggest hits alongside top-tier K-pop artists. The stars will then team up to perform their ‘K-popped’ songs in what promises to be the ultimate music battle. A live audience in Seoul, South Korea, will then choose which song makes the best K-pop hit.

Lost in the Desert… With Nick Knowles, 5, 9 pm

The presenter ends his travels in Mongolia’s capital, Ulaanbaatar, where he faces his fear of heights by taking to the skies in a tandem paraglider. Later, he meets one of the world’s most famous Mongolian throat singers, Batzorig Vaanchig, samples fermented horse mare milk and delves into Mongolia’s Soviet past, before having an eye-opening – and painful – encounter with a shaman.

The Thursday Murder Club, Netflix

The eagerly awaited film adaptation of Richard Osman’s debut novel –about residents of a retirement village who look into cold case murders as a hobby, then find themselves investigating a real-life killing – is finally here. The success of the best-selling book alone would have made it a must-see, but the cast and crew involved also happen to be first-class, with Home Alone and Harry Potter director Chris Columbus at the helm and stars including Dame Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan – who wouldn’t want Jane Tennison and James Bond on the case?! The cast also includes Celia Imrie, Sir Ben Kingsley, Daniel Mays and Richard E Grant.

Atomic, Sky Atlantic and Sky Showcase, 9 pm

The heat is on in this five-part thriller set across North Africa and the Middle East. After drug smuggler Max (Alfie Allen) is hijacked by the mysterious JJ (Shazad Latif) while crossing the desert, the odd couple find themselves desperate for money and with only each other to rely on. Deciding to complete a job for Max’s boss, the pair aren’t aware that the antiquities they’re transporting are filled with uranium – to be used as a nuclear bomb. And there are plenty of people out to stop them, including undercover CIA agent Cassie Elliott (Samira Wiley).

New Lives in the Wild, 5, 9 pm

Ben Fogle travels to northern Thailand to meet Yidan, who, like many others, was inspired by Covid-19 to change her life. Originally from China, the 34-year-old left a high-flying city career to build a rural life from scratch on a farm, where she looks after animals and grows her own food. As always, Ben gets down to practicalities, helping her in the rice field and constructing bamboo poles for crops, but he also finds his creative side by making clay sculptures. To Ben’s surprise, unlike many of the people he meets in remote places, Yidan wants to share her way of life with others and uses social media to encourage people to join her.

My Life with the Walter Boys season 2, Netflix

Nikki Rodriguez is back as Jackie Howard for a second series of the teen drama. After spending the summer in New York, Jackie returns to Colorado, determined to repair her relationship with Alex after kissing Cole. But finding her place within the Walter family isn’t easy, especially as Alex is a changed man and Cole is slipping back into his old ways.

Roo Stewart (played by Georgie Parker) gets ready for her interview with the adoption agency on Home and Away (1:45pm - see our TV Guide for listings)

She wants to make things official and adopt foster child, Cohen Luther (Nathan Murray), now that his mum is serving a prison sentence and no other family relatives can be found.

In the meantime, Cohen is happily getting involved with life at the Stewart house and helping Roo's dad, Alf (Ray Meagher), down at the Surf Club.

Roo returns from her interview in good spirits.

She is convinced that it went well and things are looking promising.

However, just as Roo and Cohen are getting ready to go shopping for school supplies, the foster mum receives some BAD news...

The adoption application has been put on pause.

The Police believe they have found Cohen's birth dad...

Levi Fowler (Tristan Gorey) checks in with his girlfriend, Mackenzie Booth (Emily Weir), about the side effects of the IVF treatment.

It's been tough going for Mackenzie, with the severe nausea, and she admits that she's not sure she will want to go through it all again, if they don't manage to get pregnant this time around...

MEANWHILE, it's the morning after the night before for Bree Cameron (Juliet Godwin).

Bree drowned her sorrows with booze after seeing the social media photos of her boyfriend, Remi Carter (Adam Rowland), with singer Avalon Bracken.

Remi tries to convince Bree that he has ceased all contact with Avalon and will NOT be playing a gig with her any time soon.

In fact, Remi is ready to turn his back on his music career completely after all the recent misery it has caused him...

Sonny's girlfriend, Dana Matheson (Ally Harris), is amused when she returns home to the beach house and finds Irene and Sonny are free-spirited and dancing around the living room together!

Unfortunately, Leah is not having such a great time.

As she begins a new era without Irene by her side at the Diner, deep down she wishes she could have changed her friend's mind about stepping away from the business they have built together...

Since being diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, Irene has made the decision to step back from the business she has run with Leah for years.

Leah feels a sense of sadness when the paperwork arrives, ready for them both to sign.

Long-time friend, John Palmer (Shane Withington), offers his moral support before the women sit down to sign on the dotted line!

There is still time for Irene to change her mind.

However, she assures Leah that this decision is for the best.

This was actually the final scene that Lynne McGranger filmed before leaving the Aussie soap earlier this year.

Scenes are often filmed out-of-sequence.

Luckily it's not her BIG departure scene, which will air in the UK in October.

Iain’s marriage to Faith is on pretty shaky ground, too… Elsewhere, Nicole’s attempts to help vulnerable Cassie flee from Holby end in tragedy and open a Pandora’s box on her own painful past in the process.

When a block of ice containing a body is discovered between the islands of Islay and Jura, Annika (Nicola Walker) and Michael (Jamie Sives) head to the Inner Hebrides, where they’re joined again by Harper Weston (Doctor Who’s Varada Sethu), who’s now been transferred to the Marine Homicide Unit. Just as Annika and Michael have found a way to talk about their daughter Morgan, Annika gets sidetracked when she realises that her ex Jake (Paul McGann) is at a conference on Islay. What follows is another entertaining episode of the police procedural, with the usual quirks thrown in – including an unusual tattoo, George Orwell’s 1984 and a brief foray into Call the Midwife territory for Annika.

Bettany Hughes' Lost Worlds, C4, 8.10 pm

For her latest series, Bettany Hughes uncovers the mysteries and legacy of the Nabataeans, an extraordinary desert people who flourished in a kingdom with the capital city of Petra (in southern Jordan) between the 4th century BC and 1st century AD. ‘They were the engine of ancient civilisation, but have been largely written out of history. I wanted to show just how important they were’, says Bettany. In Hegra (in modern-day Saudi Arabia), using the latest archaeological techniques, the historian reveals a desert city once a bustling hub of Nabataean life, uncovers tombs containing human remains and employs a drone to capture artwork from thousands of years ago that has never been seen before.

Great Gardens of Europe, 5, 6.20 pm

If you’re looking for an opportunity to escape and unwind, there are few better ways than a trip to beautiful green spaces – without even having to leave your sofa. This new series does what it says on the tin and shows us some of Europe’s best gardens. This first episode begins near Amsterdam with the site of one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world, Leiden’s Hortus Botanicus. As well as exploring its fascinating history, including its role in making tulips popular across the Netherlands, the programme also takes viewers around the gardens to see some of the exotic species in the tropical greenhouses, as well as centuries-old trees.

She starts to feel overwhelmed in what has been her place of work for so long.

After several mishaps on the job, Irene alarms business partner Leah when she announces she wants to take a step back from the Diner...

Bree Cameron (Juliet Godwin) feels betrayed by her now ex-boyfriend, Remi Carter (Adam Rowland).

However, she is missing him now they are no longer together.

Bree suggests maybe they can try and work things out.

But it would ultimately have to be on her terms.

Unfortunately, Remi reads too much into Bree's offer and tries to kiss her in the moment!

Will he further ruin things between them?

Dana invites Jo for a drink at Salt and wastes no time in asking about the nurse's love life!
