There were tearful scenes in Emmerdale last night (Tues), when the normally unbreakable Charity Dingle broke down with emotion as she told girlfriend Vanessa Woodfield she was raped by nasty DI Mark Bails of Hotten Police when she was 14-years old.

Emmerdale viewers already knew Charity and DI Bails shared a dark past but didn't realise the full, terrible truth until now.

But how will Charity bring her attacker to justice all these years later? And does she even want to?

Vanessa thinks Charity deserves justice for the historic sexual abuse she suffered at the hands of DI Bails and in tonight's episode of Emmerdale she calls the police and they soon come calling to investigate.

However, Charity is not a lady who likes other people sticking their nose in her business and she always fights her own battles. So will Vanessa's actions jeopardise the couple's future together?

When Charity Dingle notices Megan Macey soften towards lying, cheating Frank Clayton, she urges her to continue with their plan to frame him for fraud. The plot moves forward, but when Frank dials a number on Megan’s phone and gets Charity, the terrible two in are danger of being exposed. “It is sink or swim,” Emma Atkins told Soaplife. “Frank says ‘Senorita’? because he is expecting to speak to a Spanish woman, so Charity has to think on her feet.” And think Spanish!

Why doesn’t Charity want Megan to grow close to Frank again? “She’s jealous. She can’t bear the fact that Megan [Gaynor Faye] and Frank [Michael Praed] have this wonderful connection and she wants to destroy it. Charity can’t keep a man herself and is envious of that genuine affection they have.”

How do they intend to frame Frank? “They have set up this fake timeshare scenario. On paper it looks like a genuine thing and, initially, they wanted to sell one to Frank. But then people in the village started asking to invest, so they’ve come up with this idea of making it look as if the whole thing was Frank’s idea. They are not actually going to steal anybody’s money – but will make it look as if Frank was about to.”

And then? “Charity wants Frank to go back to prison. I am not really sure why she hates him so much. She feels he pulled a fast one on her, although to be fair, he really didn’t do much. She has definitely got it in for him, though.”

Does she fancy him? “Yes and I think she hoped that it would go somewhere with Frank when they had that one night stand. She thinks Frank would be a great scam partner as it’s in his blood as much as it’s in Charity’s.”

So, how does Frank come to accidentally dial Charity’s number? “Rishi Sharma [Bhasker Patel] tells Frank that the property development firm involved in the timeshare went bankrupt. Frank wants to find out more and calls a Spanish-looking number on Megan’s recently dialled list. Charity answers and has to put on a Spanish voice – it’s very over the top!”

Do you think Charity needs a man of her own? “It would be nice for her to fall in love and be normal, but you won’t get that with Charity, she is quite good on her own. Perhaps it would be nice if she were paired with somebody really different.”

What do you think of her pairing with Megan? “I think it is a brilliant dynamic. They are both headstrong women with opposing views and ideals. Megan is mainly morally upstanding, but Charity likes the fact that she is prepared to turn to the dark side.”

Will you be pleased when Lucy Pargeter (who plays Chas Dingle) returns from maternity leave? “I miss the banter that Charity and Chas have so much; I can’t wait for her to get back. I love the Marlon and Charity dynamic, too. She is so obnoxious and Marlon is so funny.”

Charity and Frank can’t resist each other, but that could be dangerous, for both of them, explains Emmerdale’s Emma Atkins

We’ve seen how Frank Clayton hates that he and Charity Dingle are good together in Emmerdale. He might not hate it so much if she weren’t holding that recording of him revealing just how badly he treated daughter Tracy’s mother.

The increasingly solid relationship he is building with Tracy and his other daughter, Vanessa, would crumble if they heard Charity’s recording. And, of course, it would be the end of him and Megan.

“Megan and Charity rub each other up the wrong way,” Emma Atkins told Soaplife. “Charity plans to use Frank to get one over on Megan. She hopes to make her jealous by stealing him from under her nose.”

So Charity is enjoying the criminal alliance she’s formed with Frank? “Charity just loves getting up to high jinx. It’s when she feels most alive. Not only has she managed to pull off a scam with one of the most mischievous men in the village, but she’s got one over on the Whites, one over on Megan [Gaynor Faye] and, on top of that, she’s got Frank [Michael Praed] over a barrel. What’s not to like?”

Does Charity fancy Frank or is it strictly business? “Yes, Charity’s definitely attracted to him. She’s been feeling a bit lonely after her break-up with Cain [Jeff Hordley]. She likes to have male attention and Frank’s charismatic with a naughty streak and a taste for old-school troublemaking. She certainly doesn’t want him to be with Megan.”

Do you think Charity’s in danger of being conned by Frank? “I’ve no doubt Frank will try to get his own back on Charity. She will just have to watch her back!”

How would she react if he betrays her? "I expect there’d be some kind of chemistry-fuelled warfare between the two of them, and you can expect Charity would seek sweet revenge in some way.”

Of all the scams Charity’s been involved in, do you have a favourite? “I never know what Charity’s going to be wearing next, which is great fun. I did enjoy shooting myself with a tranquiliser gun. That was a great day as we were filming on location, which only added to the fun.”

Charity’s also got an enemy in Chrissie White. Who would win in a battle between them? “Of course, I’m going to back Charity every time! But Charity versus Chrissie [Louise Marwood] would be a really fun dynamic to explore.”

Frank is a man who, possibly, could be so bad that he would be great for Charity! And when they realise this they immediately get in trouble!

Crooked Frank Clayton has tried hard to stay on the straight and narrow, but he’s failed. Charity needs money for Sarah’s cancer treatment and railroads Frank into helping her pull off a scam at Home Farm.

“Frank is a master con man and swindler,” Michael Praed explained to Soaplife. “There is a part of him that feels tremendously excited and invigorated by returning to his old ways.”

Why does Frank go back to his crooked ways? “Charity [Emma Atkins] blackmails him into it, but it is also for the greater good – she needs money for her granddaughter Sarah’s treatment. That makes Frank feel as if he is a soldier going into war.”

What can you tell us about this scam with Charity? “They know that Home Farm is empty and arrange to meet a jeweller there. They pretend to be a rich couple who want to buy diamonds, then Charity steals some gems. That’s when things start to go downhill.”

How does Frank feel about a partnership with Charity? “He is a bit wary of her as he doesn’t know what to expect. He has pulled scams like this all his life and knows you don’t want an unknown quantity on such a job.”

So will he do another scam with her? “I think he would be wary of her as she is duplicitous and would do anything to achieve her own goals, even if that meant landing him in it.”

But they do kiss… “It’s one of those things. A bolt out of the blue. At the time, it feels right.”

So will there be romance with Charity? Or Megan? “The women appeal to different parts of his psyche. Megan [Gaynor Faye] is probably more right for Frank as she is not liable to get him put in prison any time soon, but Charity appeals to his devilish side.”

What’s in store for Frank? “A lot I hope. The bigger the better!”

Charity and Frank like two peas in a pod, always on the lookout to make a quick buck and neither one afraid of breaking the law in Emmerdale!

It was only a matter of time before naughty Charity and Frank paired up and soon they're both on an adrenaline-fuelled high as their plan to scam some diamonds gets underway.

With their mission complete the pair bask in their success and it's not long before one thing leads to another as the obvious attraction between them sizzles...

Charity digs out her trusty conwoman wig and she and Frank head off to Home Farm, safe in the knowledge that the White family are all out.

Posing as a couple, the pair meet jewellers who have a very nice display of diamonds.

Charity and Frank turn on the charm, pretending they're interested in purchasing one of the glittery jewels.

The scenario starts off promisingly, but when things start to get trickier than expected, Charity spots an opportunity and hastily swipes a couple of the gems.

She and Frank leg it when one of the jewellers realises what's happened.

As the pair dash off into woods their hearts are thumping.

And in the heat of the moment their mutual attraction turns into a kiss!

These two are perfect for each other, but Frank is soon simmering about Charity's underhand actions.

Meanwhile Chrissie is aghast to return home and find the place swarming with police and when she later notices Charity seems to suddenly be in the money, she's on her case!

Chrissie demands to know how Charity suddenly has a stash of cash to pay for her granddaughter Sarah's treatment.

As the two women go head to head, it looks as if a vicious cat fight is in danger of breaking out.

Lawrence wades in to stop his daughter from physically attacking Charity.

But his headstrong daughter is not about to back down. As Charity confesses to her crime a raging Chrissie threatens to call the police.

Lawrence leaps in to try and smooth over the situation before the law gets involved.

Meanwhile, after discovering her crime, a disbelieving Debbie tells her mum she wants nothing more to do with her. When  hungover singletons Charity and Chas hear that a group of male rugby players are over at the B&B for a special function, they decide to go along in search of fun in Emmerdale.

The night pans out unexpectedly, but all is not lost when Charity comes up with a cunning business idea. What does she have in mind...?

Earlier on, it's Charity's birthday and Chas has decorated the pub for a surprise party.

They rock up in search of some male attention and a little fun.

However they're sorely disappointed to discover the rugby players are actually in their twilight years!

So much for the beefcakes they were expecting. This lot are more Zimmer frames and false teeth.

However all is not lost when Charity comes up with a money-spinning idea to run at The Woolpack. Get in a load of muscly men for the ladies to enjoy at a special Hunk Night! What's not to like?

But Megan's not too pleased when she gets wind of the idea and realises Charity is muscling in on her territory.

She has stern words for both Charity and Chas. Will they decide to abandon Hunk Night?

There are fears for reckless mum Charity when a car is found at the bottom of a lake in Emmerdale...

With Charity and Cain poised to move to France, Charity's world collapses when Cain does a dramatic U-turn in Emmerdale.

The couple have already packed their bags, said their goodbyes and are on the road out of the village when Cain stops the car and tells Charity he's had a change of heart, he just can't do it.

A heated exchange erupts and a heartbroken Charity tells Cain if he walks away now he'll never see her again...

A devastated Charity drives to the edge of a cliff....

Earlier on, Cain's rattled when the police turn up and ask him if he's got an alibi.

It's Moira who actually ends up leaping to Cain's defence but she later urges him to leave the village.

Deciding that there's no longer anything left for him in Emmerdale, Cain tells Charity they should bring their move to France forward.

Charity breaks the news to Noah that they're leaving for France asap, but her son is furious.

He tells her he doesn't want to come, he never wants to see her again and he's going to live with Moira instead!

Charity and Cain say their final farwells to the Dingle clan.

The pair hit the road but they've barely left when Cain suddenly stops the car.

He tells Charity he's sorry but he can't do it, he's staying in Emmerdale.

Charity's angry but also heartbroken, convinced that Cain is deep down still in love with Moira.

She tells him that if he walks away now, he'll never see her again.

But Cain's mind his made up.

Emmerdale actor Emma Atkins says Charity Dingle is joining Debbie in France – and Cain is going with her!

Things are never simple where Charity Dingle and her cousin Cain are concerned. They're back together again, but in a fit of pique, Charity announces that she is leaving Emmerdale to be with Debbie in France.

She fully expects to go alone, but Cain then turns round and says he will go with her, actress Emma Atkins tells Soaplife.

How does Charity feel about the relationship with Cain? “She is delighted, but wants more commitment. She needs to know that he loves her and there is no going back so she is pushing for more assurance, which winds him up.”

Does she worry that he still loves Moira? “That will always be in the background for Charity. I think she knows that deep down, Moira is better for Cain.”

How does she feel when Debbie says she is staying in France? “It hurts. Debbie says she is staying in France for good and Charity gets it because it is the kind of thing she would do. Debbie tries hard to get in touch with Cain to tell him the news, but she can’t so the responsibility is on Charity’s shoulders and she is dreading telling him.”

How does Cain react when he hears? “He goes pretty crazy. He smashes up the garage and then they have this huge row in the pub. What comes out of it is that Charity realises that Cain loves Moira and it stings.”

What happens next? “She’s had a spat with Noah who says that Moira was a better mother than her, so she is feeling really unstable. Charity decides to cut her losses and be with Debbie.”

How does Cain take the news? “She explains that she is leaving for France and he suggests that he goes too. She's gobsmacked and over the moon.”

Is Charity nervous when Cain goes to break the news to Moira? “Yes she is. She is so insecure and worries that Cain might realise he is still in love with Moira…”

Charity has made no secret of the fact that she wants Cain back. But when she finally gets him into bed she uses it against him! Emma Atkins tells Soaplife what Charity is playing at this time…

What is it about Cain that Charity can’t resist? “No man has ever come close to Cain [Jeff Hordley] in Charity’s book. It’s usually money that makes her world go round, but with Cain, the love is genuine.”

What happens when Cain finds out Charity knew Belle wasn’t pregnant? “Cain flips. Belle [Eden Taylor-Draper] is missing and Cain holds Charity responsible. He tells Zak and Lisa about her involvement and they declare they want nothing more to do with her. Cain goes as far as handing her a suitcase, but she isn’t going anywhere!”

How does Charity plan to win the Dingles over? “She knows that the only way to do this is to find Belle. She gets a lead and off she goes, closely followed by Sam [James Hooton] and Marlon [Mark Charnock], who are out of their depth pretty soon. Basically, she gets embroiled in some trouble when she comes across Dean [Craig Vye], Holly’s nasty ex-boyfriend.”

What happens? “Charity ends up in Dean’s house and locks herself in the bathroom, where she calls Cain and begs him to rescue her. Unfortunately, because she has recently cried wolf, he doesn’t believe her and it’s only when Sam and Marlon explain what they saw that he does something about it.”

Does Cain rescue Charity? “Yes. He finds her battered and bruised and wants to take her to A&E, but she has other ideas. Cain gives her a lift back to Emmerdale and they end up at the garage having a heart-to-heart. There is a kind of tender moment, which is passionate at the same time and then they really go for it.”

So why does she then blackmail Cain? “She threatens to tell everybody about their one-night stand if he doesn’t persuade Zak [Steve Halliwell] and Lisa [Jane Cox] to let her help look for Belle. She wants to be back in with the Dingles.”

Does Charity feel bad for Moira? “Oh no. In fact, she actively taunts her and really enjoys it. The most shameless stuff comes out of her mouth, but the beauty of it is, Moira [Natalie J Robb] keeps a very calm exterior, so Charity goes even further and the stuff she says gets worse.”

Can it last between Cain and Charity? “There is no longevity there. It’s a thrill. Some couples never know when to call it a day because it is almost like an addiction. In a parallel world they should be together, but in the real world, it’s too volatile.”

When Charity Dingle was sent to prison in Emmerdale in 2015 she made it quite clear that she would be coming back to claim her cousin Cain as soon as she was released. She’s played the long game since – and it looks to have worked!

Next week in Emmerdale, Charity goes in for a kiss as Cain and Moira’s marriage hits the rocks after a climactic row over Holly’s drug taking.

We spoke to Jeff Hordley who plays Cain, Emma Atkins who is Charity and Natalie J Robb, who stars as Moira, about the fight for Cain’s affections.

This is what Charity has been waiting for, isn’t it? Jeff: “It is. Kate Oates, our former producer, set it up when Emma left to have her son, Albert. Charity told Cain then, ‘When I come out, I am going to get you’, and it has been bubbling away under the surface all this time. They were first loves and have always been united as they have their daughter, Debbie, in common. Cain knows that Charity wants him, but has no idea just how much he has been manipulated.” Emma: “She has got fight in her belly for him. There is chemistry there and a certain 'Je ne sais quoi', yet it never works when they are together. Nobody has even come close to Cain as far as Charity is concerned. They have shared so much together.” Natalie: “Moira has always known that Charity has hankered after Cain. For that reason, I thought it was bizarre when she invited her to stay at the farm when she was released. A lot of women watching would have gone ‘No way!’ They kind of got on in a weird way. Moira is very strong and deep down she has always known that Cain loves her. She finds Charity irritating. She thinks ‘You’re cousins for God’s sake. Get over it!”

Where does it all go so wrong – or right in Charity’s case? Jeff: “His marriage is fractured because of Holly and all her problems with drugs. Cain has been away and comes back to find Moira has been infected with a needle, Holly is on drugs and James is helping them. Cain asks Moira to choose between him and Holly and she chooses her daughter and rightly so.

"Every time you think they are going to reconcile, something comes along and it goes wrong again. It isn’t always Charity either – it is their hang-ups and problems, too.” Emma: “Even though there are problems, Charity can see that Cain is still very much in love with Moira, but for selfish reasons she is ready to railroad that relationship. She is awful! I don’t condone anything she does.” Natalie: “Moira is prepared to make up after they row over Holly, but Cain kisses Charity and Moira is like, ‘This isn’t going to go down well, darling – as soon as a bit of trouble comes along you go running back to her?’ That really puts a wedge between them.”

How will you feel if Cain leaves Moira for Charity? Jeff: “It will be interesting. I am blessed because I love working with Emma and Natalie. They make me look good because they are such strong actresses. When the writers try and put Cain and Charity together, it doesn’t work because they are both too mischievous, whereas I think that Cain and Moira have more longevity.” Emma: “In a parallel world they should be together, but in the real world, it is too volatile. I have so much hope and excitement for Cain and Charity. I pick up the scripts and go ‘Oh, this is so good!’ It is like investing in a team.” Natalie: “I will miss working intensely with Jeff if that happens, but put it this way, the making up will be a lot of fun. We’ll be back in that garage! That is where I got my nickname of Mucky Moira. Everybody here at Emmerdale calls me that – nobody calls me Natalie any more.”

How do you think fans will react? Jeff: “I think they’d like to see Cain and Charity together because of all the history they’ve shared.” Emma: “I think the audience would rather watch a relationship that is troubled and layered with history and issues.” Natalie: “I did see on Twitter that viewers want a referendum if they split Cain and Moira up. I think it is split down the middle between those who back #Chain (Cain and Charity) and #Coira (Cain and Moira).”

Emma, have you settled back in after your maternity leave? Emma: “I loved my maternity leave and I dreaded coming back as I didn’t feel ready, but as soon as I started work again, I thought ‘I love this job so much!’ It is the best job in the world and I don’t know how I have juggled it with motherhood, but I have. I look at Jeff who has two kids and think ‘How do you manage it?’ He runs marathons too!” Jeff: “Not any more. I am always puzzled when people who have children say things like ‘Have you watched this box set?’ and I am like ‘Where do you get time to watch box sets?’ By the time Zoe [wife and co-star Zoe Henry] and I get in and put the kids to bed, we learn lines, tidy up the kitchen and then fall asleep.”

What’s in store for these three characters? Jeff: “Cain’s mum is coming in and Iain MacLeod our producer has said it will be interesting if we see her talking to him like he’s a child.” Emma: “Debbie is coming back soon, so that will add something extra to the mix. I am not sure what she will say about Cain and Charity, but Chas believes very strongly that Charity is not good for her brother.” Natalie: “I think the thread of Cain and Moira loving each other is going to continue. It is all about whether they can stay together or not. There will be some frustrations coming up for Moira…”

Charity has had run-ins with Cain (Jeff Hordley), Moira, Emma, Ross (Michael Parr), Nicola (Nicola Wheeler), even Doug (Duncan Preston), since her return to the village – but so far she’s only come out on top against Nicola.

We think that’s about to change in Easter Monday’s episode – in dramatic style.

Holly “Let’s get high!” Barton clearly has no idea that she made a pact with the devil in Good Friday’s episode of Emmerdale when she sat down with Charity (Emma Atkins).

It could be the drugs she’s used that have messed up Holly’s head so much she can’t see trouble staring her in the face. Or she could just be Moira’s (Natalie J Robb) daft wee girl.

Either way, she’s so desperate for money to pay off her drug dealer that she told Charity: “I’ve thought of a way for us both to get what we need.”

Her plan? To rob The Woolpack. Charity would get the money she needs to actually buy her share of the pub and Holly could get her dealer off her back.

“You think I’d actually rob from Chas [Lucy Pargeter]?’ Charity asks…

And she genuinely seemed horrified by the idea. Even, though, just a week earlier, she was trying to sell her baby, Moses, to Emma (Gillian Kearney).

“We’d make it look like a break-in. Nobody would get hurt. I get two grand, you get the rest,” Holly told Charity.

“How do I know I can trust you?” Charity demanded.

“You don’t. You’ll have to take a risk.”

“All right. I’m in,” Charity told her.

But we reckon it’s Holly (Sophie Powles) who’s in…in it right up to her neck.

Charity definitely wants to buy into The Woolpack but we’re not at all convinced that she has bought into Holly’s plan.

Does Charity sees Holly as the solution to her problems – or a problem she needs to resolve?

Charity’s only just got out of prison for the insurance fraud at Home Farm and she’s in no hurry to go back there. But one slip-up with Holly and that’s exactly where she’ll be.

Holly hardly has the makings of a criminal mastermind - and she’s only been off drugs for three weeks. We think Charity will see Holly as a problem, not a solution.

And we’ve seen how Charity deals with problems in the past… She tried to kill husband Declan (Jason Merrells) when their marriage went wrong.

We think Charity will crucify Holly… But will it be before, during, or after the robbery?

Tonight’s double dose of Emmerdale sees the return of Charity Dingle after her spell in prison. And as you might expect, she doesn’t come quietly because after turning up in a stolen Ferrari, she makes an announcement that stuns her family, friends and neighbours…

After Charity is released from prison earlier than expected, Cain and Moira wonder where she’s gone, but they soon find out when they are out and about driving along a country road. The couple are forced to stop because the road is blocked by a flock of sheep that has broken free after a car crashed through the fence of a field. And when they spot a bright red Ferrari, Cain and Moira are stunned to see Charity stepping out of the vehicle…

And there’s a further shock in store for Cain, Moira and the rest of the villagers when Charity announces that she’s the new joint owner of The Woolpack! Will being the landlady of the village pub provide her with the stability the mum of three needs or will it go straight to her head?

“It is just brilliant to see her behind the bar,” said Emma Atkins, who plays Charity. “Something very different. She will be under the watchful eye of Chas, but both characters can give as good as they get so it will be a colourful dynamic.”

For Emma, Charity’s newfound status has been a bit of a challenge…

“My pint pulling can literally floor my workmates, by being brilliant one minute and horrendous the next. It's a continuity extravaganza as I'm learning the ropes from the props guys and Lucy (Pargeter, who plays Chas) of course. It's a skill in itself having to say the lines, work the props and try and give a fluid performance without having an expression of dread wondering if the pint will have a good head of 'froth' on it!”

“The bar is a bit like a stage for Charity where she can show off and deliver her explosive one liners to the locals. Her behaviour will no doubt fluctuate from good to bad to ugly, with a decent dose of naughtiness thrown in.”

Charity’s out of prison and ready to pick up where she left off… making everyone’s lives hell. Emmerdale’s Emma Atkins hints at things to come to Soaplife…

What does Charity do when she is first released?

“Rather than go home to the village she knows and the people she loves, she goes off to steal a car. It’s a bright red Ferrari and she loses control of it and ends up in the middle of a field.”

How does Cain (Jeff Hordley) come to find her?

“Well, she steps out of this car and there is Cain and Moira [Natalie J Robb] who have come to see what’s happening because some sheep have got out of the field and are blocking the road.”

How do they react?

“They are both like ‘Are you serious?’ She hasn’t been out of prison for five minutes and is already is wreaking havoc.”

What kept Charity going while she was inside?

“She’s been thinking about Cain a lot. She went into prison realising she was still in love with him and she’s had a lot of time to mull it over.”

How does she feel about Moira?

“She won’t have liked the fact that Cain has been out there in the real world, with Moira giving Charity’s son Noah [Jack Downham] a roof over his head and a lot of love.”

Will she try to win Cain back?

“Probably, but it won’t be overnight. Besides, it wouldn’t be possible at the moment as he and Moira are watertight.”

She wants to get together with Ross (Michael Parr) again. Why?

“Charity needs money fast as all her assets are tied up in the haulage business. She and Ross make a fabulous team… and it might sting Cain a bit to see Charity hook up with another partner in crime.”

What about her and Ross’ son Moses?

“Charity wants him back and will stoop quite low in an effort to do that.”
