Danny Boyle put his stamp on the zombie movies with the classic genre entry 28 Days Later in the early 2000s. Now, more than 20 years later from the original (and nearly 20 from the last entry in the franchise), the director is back to show where things are in the dystopian England that he created with the 2025 new movie.

28 Days Later premiered in 2002 to universal acclaim (“Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes), quickly enshrined as one of the better zombie movies ever made. A sequel, 28 Weeks Later, was then released in 2007. While missing Boyle and star Cillian Murphy, the movie was still well received (“Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes). But Boyle is returning to the franchise with this latest movie, so what can fans expect?

28 Years Later cast

A new group of actors are going to lead this new entry to the franchise, namely Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer and Ralph Fiennes.

Taylor-Johnson is no stranger to big franchises, having starred in Kick-Ass, Godzilla, Avengers: Age of Ultron and has been speculated as a leading contender to be the next James Bond. Most recently he has starred in The Fall Guy and Nosferatu. We don’t know his character’s name in 28 Years Later at this time, but the trailer reveals that he is one of the main survivors that the story focuses on.

Jodie Comer and Ralph Fiennes are also expected to be among the main group of survivors featured in the movie. Comer, best known for her role in Killing Eve, Free Guy and The Last Duel, was last seen in The Bikeriders. Fiennes, meanwhile, is a two-time Oscar-nominated actor (perhaps three-time very soon for his performance in Conclave), also of course known for playing Voldemort in the Harry Potter movies.

Other confirmed members of the cast include Jack O’Connell (Rogue Heroes) and Alfie Williams (His Dark Materials).

Original franchise star Cillian Murphy has been reported as returning to the franchise with this latest edition, but he is not mentioned among the credited actors in promo materials (he is listed as an executive producer). However, the internet was abuzz as the 28 Years Later trailer, which you can watch below, appears to feature a zombie that looks a lot like Murphy. Could his character Jim finally have succumbed to the virus?

In addition to Boyle returning to the director’s chair, original screenwriter Alex Garland returned to write 28 Years Later. This marks the third time that Garland and Boyle have worked closely together, though Boyle adapted one of Garland’s books, The Beach, as well. Garland is also an Oscar-nominated writer for Ex Machina, while his other credits include Annihilation, Men and Civil War.

28 Years Later behind the scenes

28 Years Later is the first of a planned trilogy of new movies set in the zombie universe that Boyle and Garland have created. In fact, according to reports, the second entry — 28 Years Later II: The Bone Temple, directed by Nia DaCosta — was shot back-to-back with 28 Years Later.

Another behind-the-scenes fun fact being reported is that the movie was shot on an iPhone 15 Pro Max. This is akin to the first movie, 28 Days Later, being shot in part on a Canon XL-1, a digital camcorder.

After a lot of speculation that a Peaky Blinders movie was on the way, Netflix officially confirmed it on June 4, two years after the final episodes of the show aired for fans. Production is now underway for the movie and more and more information is starting to come in.

We don't have any information on a Peaky Blinders movie release date at this time.

As we said, production on the Peaky Blinders is underway, meaning you can forget about the idea that the movie could be added to the slate of 2024 new movies. Instead, the earliest we would likely get the Peaky Blinders movie is mid 2025. 

With the movie being made by Netflix, we also don't know if it is going to be one of the rare Netflix original movies to get a release in movie theaters or if it's going to premiere exclusively on the streaming service.

Peaky Blinders cast

It wouldn't be Peaky Blinders without Cillian Murphy as Tommy Shelby, and sure enough the Best Actor winner from Oppenheimer, is donning the cap once again for the movie. The rest of the Peaky Blinders movie cast is filled with series regulars and a number of exciting new additions as well.

Netflix has confirmed that returning to the world of Peaky Blinders is Sophie Rundle as Ada Shelby, Ned Dennehy as Charlie Strong, Packy Lee as Johnny Dogs, Ian Peck as Curly and Stephen Graham as Hayden Stagg. Paul Anderson, who played Tommy's older brother Arthur Shelby, is not listed among the cast at this time.

As far new actors joining the world of Peaky Blinders, Rebecca Ferguson (Dune: Part Two), Tim Roth (Reservoir Dogs), Barry Keoghan (Saltburn) and Jay Lycurgo (Titans) are all in the movie in as yet unspecified roles.

Peaky Blinders plot

The last time that we saw Tommy Shelby he was riding off into the sunset, with it revealed that his supposed brain tumor was a ploy and he is not going to die. But having taken care of all of his affairs believing his time was up, for the first time in a long time Tommy's road is wide open.

That being said, there are no confirmed plot details on the Peaky Blinders movie, aside from the fact that show creator Steve Knight wrote the script and that he has previously said it is supposed to take place during World War Two.

How to watch Peaky Blinders

In case you want to catch up with Peaky Blinders ahead of the the movie's release, all six seasons are available to stream exclusively on Netflix in the US. In the UK, the show is also available on Netflix, as well as BBC iPlayer. 

You haven’t seen the last of the Peaky Blinders. After much speculation, and some near assurances from Steven Knight that the popular crime drama would continue with a movie following Peaky Blinders season 6, Netflix has apparently made it official, giving the project a green light, as well as confirming some key returns.

According to Deadline, in addition to Netflix moving forward with the Peaky Blinders movie, it has been confirmed that Cillian Murphy is set to return as his iconic character Thomas Shelby. He told Deadline, "It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn't finished with me. … It is very gratifying to be recollaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is one for the fans."

The movie, based on a script written by Knight, is going to be directed by Tom Harper, who directed the final three episodes of Peaky Blinders season 1, with production expected to start later in 2024. Though Knight has been quoted as saying the movie would be set during World War II, plot details are being kept under wraps.

Peaky Blinders premiered in the UK in September 2013 on BBC Two (it would move to BBC One with its final two seasons), then landed on Netflix in the US in 2014. The show, which followed the Shelby family's rise from a Birmingham street gang to power players, ran for six seasons, with the final season airing in 2022.

The show certainly set itself up to be continued (SPOILERS ahead if you are not caught up with the series). After believing that he had a terminal brain tumor, Tommy Shelby did everything he could to make sure his family was safe from their enemies, including his cousin Michael Gray (Finn Cole), though it came at a great cost to him (his wife Lizzie leaves him and he puts himself into exile from his family). However, Tommy discovers he was lied to and that he is not going to die. With evidence of his criminal past destroyed, his path is clear in front of him, but it's unlike Tommy to just let things lie.

While Murphy is coming off an Oscar Best Actor win for Oppenheimer, many still consider Thomas Shelby to be his most iconic character. The same goes for the rest of the Peaky Blinders cast, which included the likes of Paul Anderson, Sophie Rundle, Ned Dennehy, Natasha O’Keefe, Ian Peck, Harry Kirton, Tom Hardy, Dylan McCormick and the late Helen McCrory. However, outside of Murphy, no cast members have been confirmed for the movie.

The earliest we are likely to get the Peaky Blinders movie is 2025, but that just means you have plenty of time to watch (or rewatch) the series before then. It is available on Netflix in the US and BBC iPlayer in the UK.

OK, we actually really love getting to look back at everything we watched this year and, often painstakingly, narrowing down our favorites (be sure to check out our best TV shows of 2023 list is coming in the near future). 

There was a lot to love at the movies in 2023, from the movies that came out of the Sundance Film Festival (the first in-person fest since 2020) and became hits to the cultural event that was Barbenheimer to new movies from legends like Martin Scorsese, Alexander Payne, Nicole Holofcener and more.

The What to Watch team of movie experts (Michael Balderston, Jason Best, Freda Cooper and Martin Shore) put our brains together to come up with the list that you'll find below. But of course there were plenty of movies that we loved this year that didn't make the final cut. Still, they deserve a nod, so please enjoy our honorable mentions from this year's slate (in alphabetical order):

Now, without further ado, let's count down What to Watch's Top 10 movies of 2023, ranked from 10 to our number one movie of the year:

10. Barbie

It's a Barbie world in 2023, as Margot Robbie's movie delivered the top slot at the box office. But there is more to Barbie than the money it pulled in — director Greta Gerwig turned the plastic doll with numerous jobs into a hysterical, colorful romp that also spoke directly to prescient issues like the everyday struggles that women have to go through, including toxic masculinity, giving that topic a great dressing down. The ensemble of all the different Barbies and Kens (and don't forget Alan!) is great, but Robbie and Ryan Gosling are incredible in bringing these iconic figures to life. Honestly, there was no reason to believe that a Barbie movie was going to be this good, so a round of applause for Gerwig, Robbie and company for exceeding all expectations for a movie that became a cultural phenomenon.

9. Killers of the Flower Moon

Martin Scorsese's 1920s crime epic Killers of the Flower Moon is as entertaining as you'd expect from the director who gave us Goodfellas, The Departed and Mean Streets. It was also a lot of fun seeing him work with his two most recognized leading men in Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro (who are both great in the movie). However, what truly makes Killers of the Flower Moon stand out is how Scorsese, amidst keeping us entertained, also reminds us of a black spot in US history — the indiscriminate killings of Native Americans by white people for their own gain — that is too often overlooked. This is embodied by a breakthrough performance by Lily Gladstone. Scorsese continues to show why he is arguably our greatest working director with another impeccable outing. 

8. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

Apologies to Tom Holland and the MCU, but the best iteration of Spider-Man has come in the animated masterpieces that are the Spider-Verse movies. After blowing us away with its style and story of Miles Morales taking up the Spider-Man mantle in 2018's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the sequel strove to raise the bar. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse weaves in more animation styles, bigger set pieces and even more Spider-people, all while still managing to tell a deeply affecting story. Across the Spider-Verse also does something incredibly difficult: it pulls off being part one of a story, which will be concluded in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, while still being a satisfying story in its own right. There's no superhero fatigue with this franchise. 

7. John Wick: Chapter 4

Speaking of superheroes, is Keanu Reeves' John Wick one at this point? Based on the amount of punishment he took in John Wick: Chapter 4 and kept getting back up, the argument is definitely there. But we enjoyed just about every second of the latest entry from the world's greatest assassin. After the disappointment that was John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum, Chapter 4 came back with a vengeance and wowed us with incredible actions sequences (the Osaka hotel, the overhead shotgun shootout, the Paris steps) and great new characters played by Bill Skarsgård and Donnie Yen. There may not have been a better time at the movies this year for action fans than with John Wick. 

6. Poor Things 

Yorgos Lanthimos is a weird filmmaker, and thank goodness for that. After critically-acclaimed movies like Dogtooth, The Lobster and The Favourite, Lanthimos and his The Favourite star Emma Stone reunited and turned things up to 11 with Poor Things. Based on Alasdair Gray's novel of the same name, Poor Things tells the Frankenstein-like story of Bella Baxter, however without the angry villagers. Instead, Bella gets to explore the world anew, which allowed Lanthimos to really go for it with things like production design and a bold script by Tony McNamara. But Stone is the spark of life for Bella and the movie as a whole, brilliantly portraying Bella's development. Poor Things is a funny, wild and an enlightening view of the world. 

5. The Zone of Interest

It had been 10 years since Jonathan Glazer last released a movie (brilliant sci-fi film Under the Skin), but the wait was worth it with The Zone of Interest. Set at Auschwitz during World War Two, The Zone of Interest is different from any other movie on the Holocaust, never fully engaging with the horrors but keeping them on the periphery as we watch the story of a German family that is benefiting from the Nazi mass murder of the Jewish people. Despite that, The Zone of Interest may be one of the most gut-wrenching experiences of the year. We as an audience know what is happening on the other side of the commandant of Auschwitz, Rudolf Höss (Christian Friedel) and his wife Hedwig's (Sandra Hüller) idyllic garden, with their infuriating indifference hammered home by the buildings of the camp lingering in the background and its harrowing sounds breaking through (the sound design of the movie is truly incredible). The Zone of Interest is truly a masterwork from Glazer. 

4. Anatomy of a Fall

Justine Triet's courtroom drama Anatomy of a Fall burst onto the scene when it won the Palme d'Or, the Cannes Film Festival's top prize. After watching it for ourselves, we can unequivocally say the honor was well deserved. Anatomy of a Fall is a riveting watch. At the center of the story is the question of whether or not a man's death was a suicide or if he was murdered by his wife (Sandra Hüller, again). The legal aspect is fascinating in its own right, as the audience tries to figure out what really happened when all we have to go on is the evidence presented in the court, which leaves much up for interpretation. But what truly makes this movie incredible are the relationship dynamics laid bare: first between the wife and her husband, but then also what happens between Hüller's character and her son (Milo Machado Garner), who begins to question his mother. It is a a gripping and thrilling experience. 

3. Past Lives

There was no better debut in 2023 than from writer/director Celine Song, whose Past Lives is one of the most beautifully intimate movies about love and life that we've seen in a long time. Based loosely on her own experiences, Song's movie focuses on a woman, Nora (Greta Lee), who emigrated from South Korea to North America when she was young. Now married, Nora reconnects with her childhood friend from South Korea, with thoughts of the life that could have been ever present. Past Lives is not flashy, but there is also not a false note in the movie from Song's script or direction to the performances of Lee and her co-stars (Teo Yoo, John Magaro). There is a magic quality to the movie that is so rare we couldn't possibly leave it off of our end-of-year list. 

2. The Holdovers

Hollywood in the 1970s is one of the most revered eras in movie history, as for a brief time directors took the reins from studios and delivered honest, character-driven movies that also served as crowd pleasers. Alexander Payne's The Holdovers is not only an ode to that era, it would fit right amongst many of that decade's best. From a brilliant script written by David Hemingson, The Holdovers sees a misanthropic professor (Paul Gimatti) at a boarding school stuck babysitting a rebellious student (Dominic Sessa) with the school's grieving head chef (Da'Vine Joy Randolph). The trio are brilliant, perfectly balancing the characters emotional arcs with laugh-out loud humor. Though 50 years have passed since that exquisite moment in time for Hollywood, The Holdovers reminds us the ability to make these kinds of movies is still present and their stories are truly timeless. 

1. Oppenheimer

Christopher Nolan doesn't do small. While most of his movies have either involved superheroes (The Dark Knight trilogy), high-concept action ideas (Inception, Tenet) or intense battle scenes (Dunkirk), even a biopic about one of the most influential scientists of the 20th century was delivered in epic style. Oppenheimer is Nolan's magnum opus, combining his incredible craftsmanship with a message that truly challenges the world outside the cineplex. From the ensemble (including stellar performances by Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt and Robert Downey Jr.) to the ability to make a three hour movie about the creation of the atom bomb race along at a gripping pace, Nolan put together a billion dollar hit like no other. There was no experience like seeing Oppenheimer on the big screen this year (and that's not even factoring in the Barbenheimer component of it), which is why we have it as our number one movie of 2023.

One of the biggest blockbuster movies of 2023 is Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer. But just how can you watch Oppenheimer?

Nolan's epic biopic about J. Robert Oppenheimer, father of the atomic bomb, has been getting amazing reviews, as the movie is "Certified Fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes. WTW's Oppenheimer review joined in that acclaim, as we call the movie Nolan's "magnum opus." All of the critical acclaim has turned into awards acclaim, as the movie has earned a total of 13 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Bets Director (Nolan) and Best Actor (Cillian Murphy).

The anticipation is high for Oppenheimer, the latest movie from Christopher Nolan and starring Cillain Murphy (Peaky Blinders). WTW ranked the movie as our second most-anticipated blockbuster movie of summer 2023, while our readers are also making their excitement known with in one of our polls, with the movie besting Barbie and Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning among July movie titles.

Safe to say, people are really looking forward to watching Oppenheimer. But when the time comes, Murphy and Nolan both have recommendations on how and where to watch the movie.

In what should comes as no real surprise, Murphy said in an interview with Empire that viewers must see Oppenheimer at a movie theater, but for emphasis he added "on the biggest f***ing screen possible." He says there the movie has moments that are going to "blow people's lids off."

In a separate interview with the Associated Press, Christopher Nolan provided some specific details on not only the format that he would recommend people see Oppenheimer in, but what seat in a movie theater that he thinks is the best place to enjoy a movie.

First on the format, he says the best possible viewing experience for Oppenheimer is going to be IMAX 70mm screenings. Unfortunately, there are only going to be about 30 theaters in the world showing that format (find out if you're among the lucky few with access to those types of screenings on the IMAX website). The non-IMAX 70mm format of the movie is going to be available in more theaters. Even more will show the movie in IMAX digital showings, which Nolan is confident will still make the movie look great.

As far as where to sit for the movie, for Nolan it all depends on the format he is watching. In a Cinemascope ratio, which is the standard, non-IMAX screen, he says that he actually likes to be closer to the front, "middle of the third row." When he does watch something on IMAX though, "I actually like to be behind the center line right up the middle. So, a little further back," the director said.

Oppenheimer tells the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer (Murphy), known as the father of the atomic bomb. The movie is going to detail the development of the weapon that would go on to change human history.

The BBC has revealed a sneak peak of Cillian Murphy reprising his role as Tommy Shelby as filming for the next series of Peaky Blinders gets underway.

The acclaimed Bafta award-winning gangster drama began filming in Manchester last month.

Series five of Steven Knight’s crime family saga finds the world thrown into turmoil by the financial crash of 1929. When Tommy Shelby MP is approached by a charismatic politician with a bold vision for Britain, he realises that his response will affect not just his family’s future but that of the entire nation.

The show will move from BBC2 to BBC1 when it returns.

Executive producer, Caryn Mandabach said, “Steve’s Birmingham saga becomes more fascinating and more relevant with every chapter. This one promises to be the best yet. I’m truly grateful to the BBC for their support of such thrilling, immersive and resonant storytelling”.

Ben Wheatley comes out guns blazing for Free Fire, a darkly comic, ferociously bonkers action thriller about an arms deal that goes appallingly wrong.

The setting is a deserted warehouse in 1970s Boston. IRA men Cillian Murphy and Michael Smiley are here to buy a stash of guns from South African gunrunner Sharlto Copley via local intermediaries Armie Hammer and Brie Larson. But the transaction erupts into violent mayhem and soon bullets are flying every which way. As these are gangs that can’t shoot straight, they rarely hit their targets. But with so much ammunition being sprayed around it is just a matter of time before everyone gets nicked, or maimed or worse.

Ostentatiously plotless, Free Fire is both a reverent genre exercise and a cheeky parody that borrows from Peckinpah and steals from Tarantino. The warehouse standoff is pure Reservoir Dogs. And so is the cheesy listening soundtrack, with John Denver used for ironic effect where Tarantino used Stealers Wheel. For sure, the characters tend to the cartoonish. And Wheatley and co-writer Amy Jump largely deny them backstories. But they do give them some very snappy putdowns and insults.

Strip away the sound and the fury and Free Fire is very much a B-movie. But is a stylish, smart and wildly entertaining one.

The actor, who has starred as Tommy Shelby since 2013, thinks it is 'crazy' that people like the style.

He told Shortlist Magazine: “But people like the undercut thing; people go to the barber and ask for a ‘peaky cut’.

“It’s crazy that people like it, it’s not grown on me in four years now. I normally keep my hair long.”

He added the style was initially introduced to stop the spread of hair lice.

“But they do realise the people in turtle-necks in Hackney with this haircut, do they realise it was styled this way to prevent lice? Tell 'em they have got the lice cut, see what they say then,” he said.

Cillian’s latest role is in Christopher Nolan’s war thriller Dunkirk.

Despite the film expected to be a roaring success, the 41-year-old admits he will only watch it once.

“I’ll see it once”, he said, adding: “I don’t know anyone who pores over their work because the impulse is always the next – the next piece I do will be the best piece I do. To an actor, nostalgia is death.

“When you look at your work from 10 years ago and think that was the apotheosis, well, you’re f***** really. It’s got to be forward thinking.”

After producing a fizzling squib with last year’s High-Rise, Ben Wheatley is back, all guns blazing, for the darkly comic Free Fire, a stripped-down, ferociously bonkers action thriller about an arms deal that goes appallingly wrong.

The mission’s planning stages do prove a little plodding, it has to be said, but Anthropoid steps up a gear when Murphy and Dornan’s Resistance fighters finally launch their attack. The assassination’s aftermath is even more thrilling. As the SS corner the heroes in a Prague church, British writer/director Sean Ellis (Cashback, The Broken, Metro Manila) unleashes a fusillade of relentless, brutally sustained action that will leave you reeling in shock and awe.

British writer/director Sean Ellis (Cashback, The Broken, Metro Manila) isn’t the first filmmaker to tackle the 1942 mission to assassinate high-ranking Nazi Reinhard Heydrich in Prague. Operation Anthropoid has already been the inspiration for a string of films, including Fritz Lang’s fictionalised wartime noir Hangmen Also Die! (1943) and Lewis Gilbert’s more faithful Operation Daybreak (1976).

And he certainly won’t be the last. Another version, HHhH, starring Rosamund Pike, Mia Wasikowska, Jack O’Connell, Jack Reynor and Jason Clarke is due next year. Ellis’s film has its flaws but, taken on its own terms, remains a rousing account of extraordinary courage in the face of overwhelming odds and savage reprisals.

"A hint of romance"

Shooting with a largely British and Irish cast, Ellis has his cast speak with Slavic-accented English, which adds some awkwardly inauthentic notes as the film unfolds. The plot, however, cleaves fairly faithfully to the historical events.

Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan take the leading roles of Czech soldiers Josef Gabčík and Jan Kubis, who parachute into their brutally occupied homeland under orders from the Czechoslovak government-in-exile to kill Heydrich, the Reich’s highest leader behind Hitler and Himmler and the main author of the Final Solution.

They make contact with the local Resistance, headed by a grave Toby Jones. And they also hook up with two local women, played by Anna Geislerová and Charlotte Le Bon, who provide them with social cover and the film with a hint of romance.

"The film steps up a gear"

Despite the ever-present sense of danger – this is, after all, a city where the wrong shade of lipstick can get you killed if it makes you too noticeable – there’s something plodding about the mission’s planning stages: there are too many false starts and delays to make a streamlined drama.

But when we get to the assassination attempt and its aftermath, the film steps up a gear. The SS bring to bear their full force on the Resistance fighters, cornered in a Prague church. And so does Ellis, training his cinematic firepower on a relentless, brutally sustained sequence that will have you reeling in shock and awe.

The thrilling third series of Peaky Blinders has left fans hungry for more. Thankfully the BBC have re-commissioned a fourth and fifth series of the Birmingham-based, gangster drama. But could a movie be on the menu too?

Cillian Murphy has caused a few waves about a possible film version of the 1920s show! When asked about his interest in a movie version by Deadline.com, Irish actor, Cillian, initially seemed to be in two minds before warming to the idea:

“I’m sort of ambivalent about it… I love the idea sort of theoretically, but it has to come at the right time, you know? You can’t alienate the beautiful democratic thing of television where everyone just watches it.

“Cinema is trickier because you… have to compress the story into probably just an event rather than the whole arc that we’ve normally been doing.

“It’s kind of a sexy idea, but I’ll reserve judgement until the idea is presented to me.”

When news initially broke about the BBC’s decision to order two new series of Peaky Blinders Cillian, who turned 40 in May, said: “Tommy Shelby is one of the most intense, challenging characters I’ve had the opportunity to play. I’m particularly grateful that Steven’s original, dynamic writing and the long form series allow me to explore Tommy in depth. I very much look forward to Tommy’s evolution over the next two chapters.”

Creator Steven Knight, who has written all episodes of the series, added: "I am genuinely thrilled at the response to the third series of the show. The prospect of writing series four and five is truly exciting. This is a real passion project for me, and I look forward to telling more stories of the Shelby family."

In the meantime Cork-born Cillian is starring in historical thriller Anthropoid with fellow Irishman, Jamie Dornan. The World War Two film is inspired by the real assassination attempt on  top-ranking Nazi, Reinhard Heydrich, known as 'The Butcher of Prague'. Hit period gangland drama Peaky Blinders has been commissioned for a fourth and fifth series by the BBC.

The series which stars Cillian Murphy as the head of a crime family in 1920s Birmingham returned earlier in May with a consolidated audience of three million viewers on BBC2.

Peaky Blinders executive producer Caryn Mandabach said: “It’s a fantastic vote of confidence in the show and Steven Knight’s writing that the BBC has ordered two more series following the first episode overnight figures. We’re both proud of, and grateful for, the BBC’s continued support of the show."

Creator Steven Knight confirmed he would write all episodes for the new series and added: "I am genuinely thrilled at the response to the third series of the show. The prospect of writing series four and five is truly exciting. This is a real passion project for me and I look forward to telling more stories of the Shelby family."

After finally finding happiness with his new wife Grace, Tommy Shelby’s married bliss was totally destroyed at the end of tonight’s Peaky Blinders, leaving fans of the 1920s Birmingham gangster drama in a state of shock.

In dramatic and emotional scenes, Grace (Annabelle Wallis) was shot dead by an Italian gangster at the glamorous Shelby Foundation Ball. A bullet straight into her heart left us in no doubt she’d perished, even though a distraught Tommy (Cillian Murphy) was frantically trying to revive her as the episode ended. Meanwhile, the other Shelby brothers seemed to have turned their rage on the assassin…

So what now for the rest of series and the four remaining episodes? Will Tommy be so overwhelmed by grief he can’t go on? Will he pull himself together for the sake of his young son? Or will he want complete vengeance and spark a gang war unlike anything that’s happened before?

"There’s a hatred in Tommy which runs deeper than anything we’ve ever seen on the show before!" warns Cillian. "Although his ambition has grown, he knows the family also have far more to lose these days."

Helen – who stars as Polly Gray, aunt of Cillian Murphy’s character Tommy Shelby, in the gritty gangster epic – donned a black dress with an asymmetric cream hem and over-sized canary yellow cuffs, while Damian wore jeans, trainers and a grey jumper.

The imposing vehicle slams to a halt and out steps the frightening figure of Tommy Shelby, coldly surveying his empire from under his peaked cap before disappearing into a building containing his booming betting business.

We’re on set for the third series of Peaky Blinders (premieres Thursday, May 3) BBC2’s epic story of a Birmingham gangster family’s rise to power. When the scene ends we grab a chat with its star, Cillian Murphy, who plays crime lord Tommy.

Tommy is obviously doing very well for himself as he’s now driving a Bentley...

“It’s that classic gangster narrative of someone enjoying success and trying to go legit, but as you’ll see Tommy is constantly being pulled back into the criminal world from where his family came.”

The show’s producer told us that the vintage Bentley is worth £400,000. You must be worried about crashing it?

“Yeah, I am. I’m not really into cars, but you do feel a slight responsibility driving it."

Series three opens on Tommy’s wedding day, but will he marry former barmaid Grace (Annabelle Wallis), who’s carrying his baby? Or, will it be rich widow May (Charlotte Riley), who has the powerful connections that Tommy craves?

“Of course I won’t reveal the bride’s identity, but the wedding doesn’t go smoothly. The interesting thing about Tommy is that he never reacts how you’d expect a normal human being to react and that’s why he’s such a brilliantly drawn character.

“You can always expect the unexpected with Tommy, so on his wedding day he’s not behaving in the normal manner of a groom.”

There’s continued hatred in this series and Tommy has a formidable new foe standing against him, fiery clergyman Father John Hughes, played by Paddy Considine. Tell us more...

“There’s a hatred that runs deeper than anything we might have seen before between Tommy and his enemies. In the past there’s been that honour among thieves thing that he’s had with his other adversaries, but it’s safe to say there’s no honour between these guys and that the hatred is the darkest we’ve ever encountered.

“This is the most pressure we’ve ever seen Tommy under and I think over the course of the six episodes audiences will begin to wonder if he’s taken on too much this time.”

You must be delighted to be working with your friend Tom Hardy again, who returns towards the end of the series?

“Tom returns as London ganster Alfie Solomons and it’s always great fun working with him. We starred alongside each other in The Dark Knight Rises, so we always try and have a laugh between takes because the scenes are so powerful.”

Peaky Blinders now has a global fan base and is screened in more than 160 countries. Does this mean you can never entirely escape Tommy.

“As soon as I get my Tommy haircut, it’s game over. I did a film recently in the Czech Republic and they love it there. I thought I’d be able to safely walk along a street in Prague, but there were a lot of people who came up to me because they love the show.”

Series creator Steven Knight has said that he’d like to take Tommy’s story right up to the start of World War Two – is that something that appeals to you?

“My feeling is as long as the writing remains as strong as it is, then absolutely. It’s very hard to find writing as good as this and characters as good as these.’

You play all your own stunt fights in Peaky Blinders. Is that something you enjoy?

"I love all that. The violence may look stylish or glamorous, but it always has consequences and I think the violence is much more realistic and brutal now than in the first series. As long as I’m fit enough and rehearse enough, there’s no reason why I can’t do my own stunts and it’s great fun.”

Two of telly and film’s brightest stars, Jamie Dornan (The Fall, Fifty Shades of Grey) and Cillian Murphy (Peaky Blinders, Batman Begins) are to co-star together in new fact-based Word War Two movie, Anthropoid.

Deadline.com reports filming on Anthropoid begins in Prague on July 13th. With Jamie, 33, and Cillian, 38, starring as Jan Kubis and Josef Gabcik, two Czechoslovakian soldiers selected to assassinate SS head honcho, Reinhard Heydrich.

Known as ‘The Butcher of Prague, Heydrich was the third most important man in the Third Reich’s chain of command, after Heinrich Himmler and Adolf Hitler. He was also instrumental in orchestrating the Nazi regime’s ‘Final Solution’

Sean Ellis, who will direct the movie about the exiled Czechoslovak soldiers trained up by British forces and returned to their war torn homeland to assassinate Heydrich, told screendaily.com:

“I feel incredibly proud to bring the story of Anthropoid to the big screen. I have been fascinated by the story for the last 14 years and find it immensely humbling to explore the bravery of the men and women of the Czech resistance who sacrificed themselves for the freedom of their country while dealing a blow into the heart of Nazi Germany.

He added: “In the Czech Republic, It is a story of great national pride and it’s time to tell the world that story.”

BBC Two has confirmed Jamie Dornan will be returning for a third series of The Fall with Gillian Anderson. The channel has also recommissioned Peaky Blinders for a third series, although Cillian Murphy’s return has yet to be officially confirmed.

Tom Hardy makes his debut in BBC2 period drama Peaky Blinders on Thursday.

Film star Tom plays Alfie Solomons, a dangerous and unpredictable London crimelord whose base is Camden Town, at end of the Grand Union canal which connects Birmingham to London.

The ambitious Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) plans to move beyond his Midlands base, a move which looks set to lead to conflict with Solomons.

"The world has expanded and so have Tommy's ambitions. Tommy wants to move out of his Birmingham stronghold and make his mark in London and the south. It's the classic gangster story of the desire to eventually make his business interests legitimate, but forever being pulled back down into the world of gangsters."

Are we going to see him and his family gang mixing it with those from high society?

"That's inevitably the arc that these characters take... they acquire wealth and with wealth comes status and power so inevitably they mix with other people who have wealth and status and power, but aren't necessarily gangsters."

Are there new rivals in this series?

"We have a couple of new nice antagonists in it. Tom Hardy plays London gangster Alfie Solomons, and Noah Taylor is an Italian crime boss called Darby Sabini. There's a whole new world of pain for Tommy to deal with. There are a lot of similarities between Tommy and his new enemies. They're both very clever, charismatic men who both want to expand their territories and that brings big conflict with it."

How's Tommy coping after Grace left Birmingham?

"Tommy's got a really soft centre but over the years and with what's happened to him in his life he's had to protect that. Grace managed to access that and it's all about whether he's going to let that side of him out again or not. Men always underestimate women, and the beauty of Peaky Blinders was you see this man demobbed from the army and he's emotionally disconnected, then you see him emotionally reawaken even though she was stabbing him in the back! It's a question of what he does with that this year."

What sort of person would Tommy be without his traumas?

"His Aunt Polly says in the first season that he wanted to work with horses and I think something like that, in that field... he's such an ambitious and clever character that if it wasn't for the criminal route he took it would be politics or business, but he'd still get to that goal. For him the criminal route seemed the most expedient. But once you get into the crim world it's very difficult to get out of it."

Tommy's always snappily dressed, despite the razor blade in the hat...

"Yeah. You set up a recognisable style in a show and then you can't really ditch it. It's part of what people really like. I was so horrified with the haircut last year, but you realise a lot of the guys you meet in the street are loving it. It's become fashionable!"

Were you surprised by the reception to Peaky Blinders when the first series was shown last year?

"It grew in the best way you want it to grow, which is by word of mouth, and apparently there's lots of social media stuff. But that to me is the best way for things to grow rather than it being shoved down your throat by advertising. And as a result it's got a great following. We'll see what happens in America as there's never been a long-form show about British gangsters."

What was it like working with Tom Hardy this time around?

"We get on really well. Everyone was very comfortable with each other and he's such a phenomenal actor and loves the show. He loved the character, and so did I."

And Tom's fianceé Charlotte Riley stars in this series too, as aristocrat May Carelton...

"Yeah she's wonderful. I've known her for a few years through Tom. Her character is a really nice counterpoint to Grace in the story as well."

And what's happening with Aunt Polly (Helen McCrory) this time?

"Polly's son reappears. It's an amazing storyline. It just broadens the whole story a bit more. Polly and Tommy have this amazing dynamic because she's definitely the matriarch. But she's not his mother and occasionally they're like a married couple and she's the one he trusts most out of all of them."

Peaky Blinders Series 2 begins on BBC2, Thursday October 2 at 9pm

The Dark Knight star Tom Hardy has joined the cast for the second series of period gangster drama Peaky Blinders and the BBC have released the first images of him with Cillian Murphy, who plays Peaky Blinders boss Tommy Shelby.

As the second series begins, we join the Birmingham gang as they attempt to build their operation during the 1920s. With Tommy Shelby determined to gain influence in London, the Peaky Blinders inevitably come up against other criminal gangs from the capital and - rumours has it - Tom Hardy's character.

With this six-part series due to hit our screens later this year, we'll find out soon enough.

Professional sceptics Sigourney Weaver and Cillian Murphy go about their business of exposing fake paranormal phenomena in twisty psychological/supernatural thriller Red Lights, debunking hoax séances, bogus faith healers, fraudulent mediums and the like with brisk aplomb.

Then legendary blind psychic Simon Silver (Robert De Niro) reappears in public after a 30-year absence, knocking the pair’s mission off course. Weaver’s veteran university professor, Dr Margaret Matheson, still baring the scars of a traumatic past encounter with Silver, wants to leave him well alone. Her younger colleague, Murphy’s Tom Buckley, can’t resist the challenge, but the more obsessively he pursues his target the more he is beset by uncanny events.

Director Rodrigo Cortés’s last film, 2010’s Buried, wrung clammy, claustrophobic suspense from the simple expediency of sticking Ryan Reynolds in an underground box. Slickly edited and eerily atmospheric, his new film shows he can work on a bigger stage. But he doesn’t get everything right.  ‘Red lights’ is the term Matheson gives to the tell-tale signs that give the fake psychic away: ‘Discordant notes; things that shouldn’t be there.’ As a filmmaker, Cortes lets slip a few discordant notes of his own, notably during the overwrought - and pointlessly over-explained - finale, but for the most part Red Lights proves that his cinematic sleight of hand is spookily good.

Remember how Martin McDonagh gleefully combined pitch-black humour, shockingly profane dialogue and savage violence with his hit-men-in-hiding movie In Bruges? Well, Irish writer Mark O’Rowe and director Ian Fitzgibbon are attempting to mine a similar vein with the dark comedy thriller Perrier’s Bounty.

The film features kindred crooks and lowlifes, and even shares a star in Brendan Gleeson, but this time the action doesn’t take place against the picture-postcard beauty of a Belgian city but amidst Dublin’s scruffy urban underbelly and its wild hinterland.

Gleeson is the eponymous Perrier, a Dublin underworld kingpin who puts the titular bounty upon Cillian Murphy’s hapless waster Michael after one of his henchmen is killed. Michael’s troubles stem from an unpaid 1000-euro debt, but they escalate after his jittery neighbour Brenda (Jodie Whittaker) shoots one of the heavies who have turned up to collect. The pair go on the run with the corpse, and with Michael’s eccentric dad, played in a curious casting stroke by Jim Broadbent, who believes he’s been visited by the Grim Reaper and will die if he falls asleep.

The sight of the bumbling Broadbent first chugging down instant coffee in an effort to stay awake and then graduating to the more potent stimulant of cocaine is a blast, and typical of the calculatedly weird conceits O’Rowe and Fitzgibbon serve up. At times, they appear to be straining too hard for effect, but at its best the film has a cartoonish vitality - I loved the name the story’s posse of dangerous-dog trainers give themselves: the Savage Canine Vernacular. The plot may be all over the place, but the cast relish O’Rowe’s salty dialogue, even if it never matches the scabrously funny richness of In Bruges.

1940s bohemians Keira Knightley and Sienna Miller vie for the affections of Dylan Thomas in this arty biopic of the dissolute poet.

Dylan Thomas may have been a great poet (the jury’s still out, actually), but he was certainly a complete pill in his private life. That’s the verdict, at least, of The Edge of Love, the arty biopic starring Keira Knightley and Sienna Miller that opened this year’s Edinburgh Film Festival on June 18th. As played, all too convincingly by Matthew Rhys, Thomas comes across as a shiftless, self-centered sponger.  And that’s when he’s sober.

Fortunately, the sozzled poet isn’t the centre of attention in John Maybury’s film (scripted, incidentally, by Keira’s mum, playwright Sharman Macdonald). The movie’s main interest is the two women in his life, his childhood sweetheart Vera Phillips (played with a credible lilting Welsh accent by Knightley) and his free-spirited wife, Caitlin (Miller), who together formed an uneasy ménage à trois with Thomas in Blitz-torn wartime London.

As the film develops, this trio then becomes an even more awkward foursome when gallant army officer William Killick (Cillian Murphy) appears on the scene and determinedly woos cabaret singer Vera. And it’s his shell-shocked return from fighting in Greece that finally brings the quartet’s tangled relationships to crisis point.

Sadly, Macdonald’s screenplay is too fuzzy to deliver the emotional pay off the story requires, leaving the viewer to grope towards the realisation that it’s the women’s bond with each other rather than their ties to Thomas that forms the true heart of the picture.

As for director Maybury, he does a good job on a restricted budget of evoking a wartime London of fusty pubs and dingy lodgings, while inserting documentary footage of the Blitz to provide the bigger picture. He also deserves credit for throwing in some less familiar period details such as the cabaret concerts in the Tube where Vera performs (yes, Keira sings!). But his penchant for distorted camera angles and mirrored reflections soon becomes distracting.

That said, Knightley and Miller do provide real emotional depth and complexity to their characters (enough, please, of those sneering put-downs of ‘Ikea’ Knightley), but it isn’t always easy to buy them as real women of the period. When we glimpse some artfully grainy home movie footage of the pair frolicking on the beach at New Quay, it’s hard not to imagine you are watching a couple of models from a Boden fashion shoot at play.
