The series follows Michael (Detectorists’ Pearce Quigley), whose girlfriend disappeared under mysterious circumstances seven years ago. Michael’s experiments soon lead to the creation of the titular supernatural creatures, who, it seems, can predict the future.

One of my favorite comedy actors is Charlie Day and I was really excited for his directorial debut Fool’s Paradise back in 2023. However because of its poor reviews and the fact it never released in the UK, I never saw it… until this weekend, when I discovered it had been added to Prime Video.

Day stars in Fool’s Paradise as a child-like mute man who’s kicked out of his mental hospital into the streets of Los Angeles, where he’s discovered due to bearing a resemblance to an unruly method actor and becomes a stand-in for the man. Quickly his career blossoms and then bottoms out in what’s clearly a whistle-stop satire of the Hollywood movie business, as he builds a friendship with a down-on-his-luck publicist.

Unfortunately, the movie was poorly reviewed, with 20% on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing. People criticized the apparent lack of humor in the movie, which just doesn’t make sense to me.

That’s because I really, really liked Fool’s Paradise; admittedly, my expectations were low because of the reviews, but I still found it a fun film that made me laugh more than most other ‘comedies’ I’ve seen on streaming.

Lots of this comes from the cast, with even bit-actors getting one or two funny or weird characterisations, but there were loads of smart details added to dramatic scenes to keep the tone consistent; I really enjoyed a scene on a movie set where assistants kept appearing to offer famous stars a chair to sit on.

You could also make a drinking game out of the movie for how prolific it is with cameos. Day’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia cast mates like Glenn Homerton, David Hornsby, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Artemis Pebdani and Jimmi Simpson appear briefly as do John Malkovich, Ray Liotta, Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis, Dean Norris, Jillian Bell and Comon. That’s not even counting the ‘proper’ cast: Ken Jeong as down-on-his-luck publicist Lenny, who’s basically the co-star of the movie, as well as Kate Beckinsale as an actress who marries the main character and Adrien Brody as a rival actor.

The movie’s just charming as well, with Day showing his love of the history of Hollywood by channeling silent-movie Buster Keaton style comedy and style as much as modern-day Big Lebowski-esque plotting.

I can understand some criticism of the movie; the main character doesn’t really have any agency or goal throughout and in some movies, that can be an issue. But in Fool’s Gold the world of the story is active enough to compensate (as is Jeong’s character, who’s the heart of the story), and otherwise it’s narratively solid as a rags-to-riches story.

With how much absolute dross is put onto streaming services on a daily basis, I just can’t understand how a movie made with so much passion and heart can get just 20% on Rotten Tomatoes (for context, I just gave up on an absolutely terrible Netflix crime series which has a head-scratching 83% on the site, ditching it because it felt so generic and mindless). It may not be the perfect movie but Fool’s Paradise deserves a much better score and 90 minutes of your time during your next movie night.

Ludwig season 2 has started filming, with David Mitchell again starring alongside Anna Maxwell Martin.

And it's been revealed that Shetland star Mark Bonnar is joining the cast as a regular alongside Fleabag's Sian Clifford. Mark plays newspaper editor Gareth Fisher, with Sian as local MP, Joanne Kemper.

Ludwig was the BBC's biggest hit of 2024, with the comedy-drama attracting huge audiences. Fans in the US and Canada will be able to watch season 2 of Ludwig via BritBox.

Teasing the second series, the makers say: "Picking up from where things were left at the end of series one, master puzzle-setter John 'Ludwig' Taylor (David Mitchell) is now a Crime Scene Consultant working on 'impossible' crimes for the Cambridge Police Authority. No longer having to masquerade as his brother, he's openly more 'Ludwig' than ever — brilliant at solving puzzles but hopeless at everything else.

"But John's identical twin brother, James, is still missing, and now that he's an official employee of the station, John is forbidden from using any police resources to look for his brother or uncover exactly what he was investigating.

"Of course, John won't stop and neither will Lucy (Anna Maxwell Martin), John’s sister-in-law and wife of his missing brother James — a puzzle needs solving and a husband and father needs bringing home. One masquerade may have ended, but a new one has just begun.”

Also joining the cast is Ben Ashenden (Deep Cover) as DC Ethan Cole, and Rumi Sutton (After the Flood) as DC Caitlin Sullivan.

Returning for series two are Dipo Ola as DCI Russell Carter, Dylan Hughes as Henry Betts-Taylor, Dorothy Atkinson as DCS Carol Shaw, Ralph Ineson as Chief Constable Ziegler, and Karl Pilkington as DI Matt Neville.

The new series is six parts, but we don't have a confirmed release date as yet.

While classic comedy The Office US has seen its fair share of regional versions (it is one itself, after all), it hadn't seen a spin-off... until now, with The Paper which releases on Thursday, September 4.

The Paper is about a small-town local newspaper in Toledo, and a new editor who's brought in to try and turn it around and make it successful. We watch the events courtesy of the same (fictional) documentary team which filmed Dunder Mifflin back in The Office.

The new editor is played by Domhnall Gleeson and he's joined by the sole returning face from The Office, Oscar Nuñez, who played Oscar. The rest of the cast is rounded out by Tim Key, Sabrina Impacciatore, Chelsea Frei, Melvin Gregg, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Alex Edelman and Ramona Young.

It goes without saying how popular The Office US was, and fans are hoping lighting will strike twice with The Paper.

People who want to watch The Paper in the US will be able to do so using the streaming service Peacock, which is also where the entire run of The Office is available to stream.

All ten episodes of The Paper are set to stream straight away upon release, which is Thursday, September 4.

If you live in the UK, there are two ways to watch The Paper, but note: both of them receive the show one day after the US release. That means all ten episodes will land on Friday, September 5.

The show will stream on both Sky TV and Now, with the services' deals to get The Paper also ensuring that The Office will be available to stream on both.

Now TV is the cheaper of those two services at £9.99 per month, but Sky TV has a lot more for the money as it includes lots of premium live channels too.

Only Murders in the Building season 5 sees our favourite podcasters-turned-amateur sleuths tackle their trickiest case to date.

The return of the award-winning comedy drama — airing on Hulu in the US and Disney Plus in the UK from Tuesday September 9 — finds tetchy actor Charles-Haden Savage (Steve Martin), level-headed artist Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez), and neurotic director Oliver Putnam (Martin Short) looking into the demise of Lester (Teddy Coluca), the doorman at their Manhattan apartment complex The Arconia, who was found lying dead in a fountain in the last series’ finale.

While the police believe it was an accident, the gang suspects murder, and connections emerge to a group of enigmatic billionaires and also to the underworld. And trying to help Charles, Mabel and Oliver unravel the mystery along the way is their quirky, animal-loving neighbour Howard Morris, played by Michael Cyril Creighton.

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is going to enjoy these last days of summer by taking a bit of a break. There are no new episodes of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert for the week of August 11-15 on CBS, and that will be the case for a while.

Per a representative from Paramount, The Late Show is taking a summer hiatus for the rest of the month, with The Late Show not returning with a new episode until Tuesday, September 2, after the Labor Day holiday weekend in the US.

Just because The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is not new does not mean the late-night talk show won’t be on. Every night of August 11-15, The Late Show reruns are going to air on CBS at the show’s regular time, 11:35 pm ET/PT. Expect that to be the case while Colbert and company are on hiatus.

Colbert typically takes these kinds of extended breaks during the summer, as do many other late-night hosts. Jimmy Kimmel has been off for most of the summer, with guest hosts filling in to host Jimmy Kimmel Live! (this week it’s Nicole Byer).

However, Colbert taking time off is a bit more noteworthy nowadays after it was previously announced that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert was cancelled, with the show’s final episodes set to air in May 2026.

Many who criticized the decision believe that it could have been a decision to appease the Trump administration, as Paramount and Skydance looked to finalize a merger (which has since closed), and Colbert has been an ardent critic of the president.

Whether or not that is the case, Colbert has not pulled back his punches post-cancellation. In the most recent new episode on August 7, he included bits that featured a clip where Trump acknowledged that Colbert was the top-rated late-night show on TV while trying to say he (and his fellow late-night hosts) were untalented. Also, Colbert did an impersonation of Vice President JD Vance as a baby because of a story of Vance ordering for water levels of a river to be raised for a boat trip for his birthday. He also joked for Netflix to call him, as he'll be available in June.

Again, in addition to watching reruns of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on CBS, you can stream the show on demand on Paramount Plus until its return with new episodes on September 2.

For a while there, it felt like we were all watching a simulation of Sex and the City, some kind of ChatGPT-fueled adaptation that similarly followed the romantic adventures of Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) and co., but only sort of.

And Just Like That, the spinoff series of that HBO classic, was the closest thing we'd all get to having SATC back on our screens each week. All of the disparate parts were there (well, all except the token sauciness of Kim Cattrall's Samantha Jones, who only popped up in one measly cameo): Bradshaw, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis were reprising their iconic roles as BFFs Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte, with former SATC showrunner Michael Patrick King back to captain the fabulous ship. There was Aidan (John Corbett), Harry (Evan Handler), Steve (David Eigenberg), Anthony (Mario Cantone) and New York. It certainly looked like Sex and the City.

But it didn't feel like it—across three seasons on HBO Max, AJLT failed to live up to the magic of its pioneering predecessor, lacking the cheeky wit, substantial heart and insightful social commentary of the original. Most offensive of all, the beloved lead trio became darn-near unrecognizable: Carrie, too rich, passive and incurious; Charlotte, too goofy and dog-obsessed; and Miranda, too everything.

However, at the near end of the series' third season, it's felt like the powers that be have finally tapped in that SATC spirit: after fumbling its way around incorporating new characters like Nya Wallace (Karen Pittman), Seema Patel (Sarita Choudhury), Lisa Todd Wexley (Nicole Ari Parker) and—gulp— Che Diaz (Sara Ramirez) in its first two installments, the show has rightfully recentered the focus on Carrie and her own romantic entanglements and close friendships, the very sustenance that fueled the original series through six seasons and two films.

The emotional dissolution of Carrie's relationship with—spoiler alert—on-and-off-again love Aidan felt like classic Bradshaw (it helped that their romance-ending fight was one those characters have been having for decades, ever since Sex and the City itself), as did the lightness of her sweet rebound with fellow writer Duncan Reeves (Jonathan Cake). The end of episode 9, "Present Tense," saw a newly single Carrie joining her girlfriends for some commiseration cocktails, reaffirming—as SATC always had—that the women she surrounded herself with were the true loves of her life.

Sadly, though, those Sex and the City-worthy qualities have come far too late: And Just Like That has officially been axed by HBO Max, with King personally announcing the spinoff's cancelation on his social media accounts: "While I was writing the last episode of And Just Like That... season 3, it became clear to me that this might be a wonderful place to stop," he wrote.

He added: "Along with Sarah Jessica Parker, Casey Bloys and Sarah Aubrey, we decided to end the popular series this year with a two-part finale and extended the original series order from 10 episodes to 12. SJP and I held off announcing the news until now because we didn't want the world 'final' to overshadow the fun of watching the season."

The sequel series will air its final episode on Thursday, August 14. And while it's certainly sad for longtime fans to have to say a last goodbye to Carrie Bradshaw, Charlotte York, Miranda Hobbes and the rest of the Sex and the City universe, at least we're glad that, for a moment there, said universe was looking far more like familiar territory than it had in years.

Lindsay Lohan is currently back on the big screen reprising one of her most-loved characters, Anna Coleman in Freakier Friday, which premiered in theaters on Friday, August 8. Airing Sunday, August 10 at 8pm Eastern Time, the 1998 update of the 1961 film of the same name follows a similar premise as the original: Lohan plays both "Hallie Parker, a hip Californian, and Annie James, a proper London miss," identical twins who don't even know each other exists—they were separated at birth following the divorce of their parents Nick Parker and Elizabeth James (played by Dennis Quaid and Natasha Richardson). When they accidentally meet at summer camp, however, the girls devise a plan to switch places, forcing their parents to reunite and fall in love again to bring the family back together at last.

Along with Lohan, Quaid and Richardson, The Parent Trap ensemble includes Abbott Elementary star Lisa Ann Walter as Hallie's loveable nanny Chessy, Simon Kunz as Annie's trusty butler Martin, and Elaine Hendrix—who reunites with Lohan in Freakier Friday—as Nick's much younger fiancée Meredith Blake, who threatens Annie and Hallie's plans to get their parents back together.

The sweet family flick was the feature directorial debut of Nancy Meyers, who would go on to direct such crowd-pleasers as Something's Gotta Give, The Holiday and It's Complicated.

Tonight's airing of The Parent Trap is part of ABC's ongoing partnership with The Wonderful World of Disney, with the alphabet network regularly airing Disney movies on Sundays for the past twenty years. Nobody does romcoms quite like JLo. She's the queen of the genre, giving us all those essentials — the laughter and tears, the glamour, the heart, and the happy ending — and she delivers with such charisma that they’re hard to resist.

Despite forays into more dramatic roles, she’s never far away from another heartwarming romance and one of her most popular has landed on Netflix today [Sunday, August 10] in the US. Marry Me (2022) has the ultimate meet cute.

Lopez is Kat, a global singing sensation and half of a super-glam power couple. She and Puerto Rican superstar Bastian (Maluma) are getting married, but this will be no ordinary ceremony.

They’ll perform their latest hit, “Marry Me”, at Kat’s concert and exchange vows in front of countless fans, both at the venue and on numerous platforms around the world. That’s the plan, but it all goes out of the window when, seconds before the ceremony, Kat discovers Bastian has cheated with her assistant.

With her life crumbling in front of her, she looks into the audience and locks eyes with Charlie (Owen Wilson), a divorced maths teacher who’s been dragged along to the concert by his daughter.

And Kat decides to marry him there and then. Her split-second decision turns into romance, but coming from such different worlds, their future soon begins to look rocky...

The ending is all-too-obvious, but the movie is smart enough to make their relationship burn appealingly slowly, so we’re given the chance to get to know the unlikely couple and get behind their efforts to make it work. The odds may be stacked against them, but we’re backing them all the way, so it’s tissues at the ready.

And audiences fell in love almost as heavily, giving it a heartwarming 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics weren’t quite as enthusiastic, but it’s since become a regular in their top five JLo romcoms.

It's a favorite all round. And it’s not hard to see why. The premise is sweet, the title track sticks in your memory, and the script gives Lopez an opportunity to flex her acting muscles with some heartfelt scenes about life in the public eye.

For somebody whose leading men have included Matthew McConaughey, Ralph Fiennes and Richard Gere, Owen Wilson’s ramshackle teacher is a change in style, but she has chemistry not just with him, but Maluma as well.

Aside from starring in romcoms and producing many of her own movies, Lopez has been steadily building a reputation as a dramatic actress. Marry Me was her first film since Hustlers (2019), which saw her play the brains behind a group of streetwise former strippers who decide to turn the tables on their sharp-suited clients.

Described by many as a "career best performance", it attracted some Oscar buzz but, when the nominations were announced, the Academy looked the other way, even though she received Golden Globe, SAG and Critics’ Choice nods.

More recently, she was back in another strong dramatic role, this time in Unstoppable (2024), playing the tower-of-strength mother in the true-life story of wrestler Anthony Robles.

But her squillions of romcom fans won’t have to wait too long to see her back where she belongs in Office Romance, which is due on Netflix sometime next year. This time she’s teamed with Brett Goldstein, and there's a heavy-hitting cast including Jodie Whittaker, Tony Hale, Edward James Olmos, and Bradley Whitford all in support.

She plays a company CEO who finds herself in danger of breaking her own company’s anti-fraternization policy – and, judging from the on-set photographs, the reason is pretty obvious. The actress whose name spells romcom paired with Ted Lasso’s grumpy Roy Kent? We can’t wait for that meet cute!

Who doesn't love Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum? They both are at their charming best in The Lost City, an action/adventure comedy that is a solid, easy watch from the last few years.

In the movie, Bullock plays an author who is kidnapped by an eccentric billionaire (played by Daniel Radcliffe) who believes her most recent book reveals clues to a real ancient lost city. It falls to her cover model (Tatum) to try and rescue her.

Copshop (2021)

• Under-the-radar crime thriller with a fun Gerard Butler performance is streaming as of August 11

There's a large fan base for Gerard Butler's crime movies Den of Thieves and Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, but in my opinion, Copshop is just as fun and is a far superior movie than the Den of Thieves franchise, and we still get Butler showing his rougher side.

In Copshop, a con artist (Frank Grillo) attempts to hide from a lethal assassin (Butler) by getting himself arrested. However, the assassin follows him into the station, with only a rookie cop (Alexis Louder) on duty to handle the situation.

Copshop is "Certified Fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes.

Alien: Earth

• The first two episodes of the sci-fi TV series premiere on Hulu on August 12

The Xenomorphs have been terrorizing space for almost 50 years, but they are about to terrorize Earth in the FX/Hulu original series Alien: Earth from Fargo creator Noah Hawley.

With a cast of relatively lesser-known actors, save for Timothy Olyphant, Alien: Earth is one of the more interesting summer TV shows we're getting this year and is worth giving a try.

John Wick movies

• The entire John Wick franchise starts streaming on Hulu on August 15

Not one, not two, not three, but all four John Wick movies arrive on Hulu this week.

The mega-action franchise, starring Keanu Reeves as the world's most dangerous assassin out for revenge against those who have wronged him, has spawned beyond the confines of these four movies (most recently with the spinoff movie Ballerina), and we're even getting a John Wick 5 it seems. But these four movies (John Wick, John Wick: Chapter 2, John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum, John Wick: Chapter 4) remain the gold standard.

Stand Up to Cancer

• A special live stream of the Stand Up to Cancer fundraising event takes place on August 15

Stand Up to Cancer raises money for cancer research, and one of their biggest events is the Stand Up to Cancer event, taking place for the ninth time on August 15.

Hulu will have a special live stream of the event that begins at 8 pm ET/5 pm PT, with host Sheryl Crow and appearances and performances from celebrities, including Dolly Parton.

Typically we're not crazy about the end of summer arriving, but one silver lining to the change in seasons is the launch of the fall TV slate, which always brings a bevy of new shows to the networks (ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC and various cable channels) and streaming services (Apple TV Plus, Hulu, Netflix, Peacock and more).

Fall 2025 is looking to have a solid lineup for viewers, both with a range of new shows and returning favorites. The Paper (Peacock)

The Office is, without a doubt, one of my favorite shows of all time. If you were to ask my friends, they’d probably tell you I can even quote lines from specific episodes of the series. It’s because of my love for The Office that I’m optimistic about the sequel show, The Paper.

The new mockumentary follows the employees of a dying newspaper in Toledo, Ohio, as they try to deal with job uncertainty along with the ebbs and flows of their personal lives. The concept of The Paper and The Office are similar, I just want the comedy of both shows to be similar as well. — Terrell Smith

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 3 (AMC)

After spending the first two seasons in France, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 3 is moving to Spain. Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Carol (Melissa McBride) are still trying to get home and it looks like there could be a path, but it means venturing into Spain. They’ll face new challenges and new threats in addition to the hordes of undead wandering around.

Daryl Dixon will spend the next two seasons in Spain before the series bows at the end of season 4, so fans will be watching to see how Carol and Daryl’s arrival sets up the beginning of the end of their journey. — Sarabeth Pollock

Only Murders in the Building season 5 (Hulu)

It's just not fall without an Only Murders in the Building mystery to solve. Since 2021, the series has probably been my favorite show on TV thanks to their clever mysteries, fantastic writing and directing, great supporting casts, but most importantly the wonderful and hilarious chemistry between stars Selena Gomez, Steve Martin and Martin Short.

The show has yet to let me down, which is why I'm stoked to watch Only Murders in the Building season 5, which will attempt to solve who killed the Arconia's doorman Lester, with a host of suspects and new guest stars to choose from.

Only Murders in the Building season 5 premieres Tuesday, September 9, exclusively on Hulu.

High Potential season 2 (ABC)

I started High Potential when it premiered on ABC last fall and loved Kaitlin Olson’s performance as a struggling single mom who has an incredibly high IQ and becomes a consultant for the LAPD, but I got behind on the show and have had to play catch up. But I’m determined to stay up to date with High Potential season 2, as it is probably my most anticipated network TV show this fall.

I'm excited to see Olson’s Morgan Gillroy back on the case, using her unorthodox investigating skills, bantering with her partner (Daniel Sunjata) and trying to unravel what happened to her husband after he mysteriously disappeared years earlier. — Michael Balderston

High Potential season 2 premieres on Tuesday, September 16, on ABC; streams on-demand the following day on Hulu.

Gen V season 2 (Prime Video)

It’s been nearly two years since Gen V premiered, and as a fan of nearly all things The Boys, you can imagine my excitement to see the spinoff series pick up where it left off with Gen V season 2.

With Marie (Jaz Sinclair), Emma (Lizze Broadway) and the other actual “heroes” now portrayed as enemies of Homelander (Antony Starr) and Vought, I’m intrigued to see how the young supes get out of their predicament. On a sadder note, based on the trailer, I get the sense that the real-life death of show star Chance Perdomo, who portrayed Andre, will be handled with care and respect in the new episodes. — Terrell Smith

Love Island Games season 2 (Peacock)

Love Island Games season 2 finally arrives this fall, nearly two years since the first season of the series premiered. Having become a major fan of Love Island USA and just wrapped Love Island USA season 7, the biggest season of the franchise to date, I’m ready to see which past islanders will be competing in the next round of Love Island Games and what romantic connections will be formed.

I’m hoping to see Love Island USA season 5’s Leo and season 7’s Coco, Andreina Santos-Marte and Jeremiah all back on screen in Love Island Games season 2. — Terrell Smith

Reasonable Doubt season 3 (Hulu)

During its tenure on air, Reasonable Doubt has provided a nice fix for my craving for high-octane legal dramas. With Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder and Your Honor, all resting in the annals of TV history, Reasonable Doubt has stepped into the void and is doing an exceptional job showcasing the journey of high-profile attorney Jax Stewart (Emayatzy Corinealdi).

Since Reasonable Doubt season 2 ended on a cliffhanger in regards to Jax and Lewis (McKinley Freeman) being sued over the death of Lewis’ baby with Toni (Tristan Cunningham), I can't wait to see if this becomes the case Jax is dealt a loss. — Terrell Smith

Reasonable Doubt season 3 premieres Thursday, September 18, exclusively on Hulu.

Chad Powers (Hulu)

Ted Lasso was born from a NBC Sports commercial for the Premier League; is our next great sports comedy going to have similar origins?

Chad Powers stars Glen Powell as a disgraced college quarterback who attempts to get a second chance at glory by donning some makeup and a wig and going by the alias Chad Powers to be a walk-on at a struggling program. The series was inspired by a prank video that featured two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback Eli Manning attend tryouts at Penn State.

Ted Lasso may be lofty expectations, but I’ve been a big fan of just about everything Powell has done in recent years, so count me in on this one. — Michael Balderston

Chad Powers premieres Tuesday, September 30, exclusively on Hulu.

Task (HBO)

Remember how Mare of Easttown, the Kate Winslet-led crime drama, had us all hooked back in 2021? Well, Brad Ingelsby, the creator of Mare of Easttown, is back with another series set in the Philadelphia suburbs.

In Task, Mark Ruffalo stars as an FBI agent who leads a task force created to put an end to a violent string of robberies in the area. There won’t be any mystery for audiences as to who is doing the crimes, as Tom Pelphrey (Outer Range) has been tapped for that role, but the hunt by Ruffalo and his team to take him down has the potential to be pretty compelling TV. And the pedigree of HBO and Ingelsby's last series bodes well. — Michael Balderston

There is no confirmed premiere date for Task at this time, though HBO has confirmed that the series will premiere in September, streaming simultaneously on HBO Max.

Abbott Elementary season 5 (ABC)

Over the past four seasons, Abbott Elementary has absolutely been the best comedy series in my opinion, so, of course, I’m excited for Abbott Elementary season 5. I can’t wait to see Janine (Quinta Brunson) and Gregory (Tyler James Williams) take their relationship to the next level, Ava (Janelle James) get reacquainted with her job as principal and what other obstacles the Abbott crew faces as they just try to teach in this modern age. Also, who doesn’t want to see more quirky moments from Mr. Johnson (William Stanford Davis)? — Terrell Smith

Abbott Elementary season 5 premieres Wednesday, October 1, on ABC; streams on-demand on Hulu the following day.

Nobody Wants This season 2 (Netflix)

If Kristen Bell is in it, I’m usually invested in the project (sans Frozen, which I’ve embarrassingly enough haven’t seen). So when Nobody Wants This debuted last year on Netflix, I quickly powered through the episodes and loved the funny take on opposites attracting and falling in love. She was brilliant as Joanne, an agnostic dating podcaster, falling for Adam Brody’s Noah, a modern rabbi.

In season one, the duo faced a few obstacles as a couple, so I’m left wondering what additional obstacles they may face in season 2, especially given Noah’s promotion in the temple. — Terrell Smith

Nobody Wants This season 2 premieres Thursday, October 23, exclusively on Netflix.

Talamasca: The Secret Order (AMC)

The Anne Rice Immortal Universe is expanding with a brand new spinoff, Talamasca: The Secret Order. Based on the secretive society of observers who keep watch over the world’s supernatural residents, the series will be a spy thriller that sees the agents furtively keeping tabs on witches, vampires and other supernatural beings all over the world.

What we love about this series is that it has the potential for lots of crossovers between Interview with the Vampire and Mayfair Witches, so that means we get to see more from our favorite immortals. — Sarabeth Pollock

Talamasca: The Secret Order premieres Sunday, October 26, on AMC and AMC Plus.

Down Cemetery Road (Apple TV Plus)

Slow Horses remains one of my favorite shows on TV, and I’m excited about Slow Horses season 5. However, I’m just a bit more intrigued by the potential of Down Cemetery Road, a new Apple TV Plus series that is based on a book series by Slow Horses author Mick Herron.

Emma Thompson stars as a private investigator who helps Ruth Wilson in the search for a missing young girl, which quickly spirals into a wide-ranging conspiracy.

Premiering right after Slow Horses ends, it could be the perfect complimentary series and another exciting thriller to stream on Apple TV Plus. — Michael Balderston

Down Cemetery Road premieres Wednesday, October 29, exclusively on Apple TV Plus.

The American Revolution (PBS)

2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, so there are going to be plenty of celebrations revolved around that, including probably more than a few TV specials. It’s a little early, but one of those is a PBS documentary series from Ken Burns, Sarah Botstein and David P. Schmidt, The American Revolution.

Burns has made a name for himself with his in-depth documentaries, including previous ones about the Civil and Vietnam wars. We all know the basics about the American Revolution, but expect for Burns and his co-creators to dive into things that we may never have known about but should not be forgotten. — Michael Balderston

Stranger Things season 5 (Netflix)

At long last, the final season of Stranger Things is here. It’s been more than three years since Stranger Things season 4 set up the end game in the battle between our Hawkins heroes and the Upside Down, so expectations are high for the Duffer Brothers and company to close out the series.

Netflix is making sure that the series is at least getting an epic rollout, with Stranger Things season 5’s eight episodes broken into three parts. The first four premiere in time for Thanksgiving, the next three as a Christmas Day treat, and the Stranger Things finale dropping on New Year’s Eve.

I honestly am having a hard time remembering a series that has had this much anticipation around its finale since Game of Thrones. Here’s hoping they stick the landing better. — Michael Balderston

All Her Fault (Peacock)

When Marissa (Sarah Snook) sends her son on his first playdate, the last thing she thinks is that she’ll never see him again, but when it’s time to pick him up, the woman who answers the door isn’t the same mother she dropped him off with, and what’s more is that the woman has no idea who her son is. So begins All Her Fault, a thriller that portrays a desperate woman living through a parent’s worst nightmare. — Sarabeth Pollock

All’s Fair (Hulu)

When Kim Kardashian dazzled critics with her turn as a devious attorney in American Horror Story: Delicate, Ryan Murphy quickly recruited her for another series he was dreaming up. All’s Fair is the story of a powerful Los Angeles law firm run by women. Kardashian plays the firm’s divorce lawyer who works with her team to get the best deal for her clients.

I'm excited to see this powerhouse cast that includes Kardashian, Glenn Close and Sarah Paulson. — Sarabeth Pollock

Halloween Baking Championship season 11 (Food Network)

Spooky season is on the way and there’s nothing like Food Network’s Halloween Baking Championship to get you in the mood to bake up some terrifyingly tasty treats. The series, now in its 11th season, features bakers who let their imaginations run wild as they create some of the most extraordinary confectionary creations ever seen.

Holiday Touchdown: A Bill’s Love Story (Hallmark Channel)

Hallmark Channel partnered with the NFL in 2024, leading to their crossover film, Holiday Touchdown: A Chief’s Love Story, which premiered during Countdown to Christmas 2024. This season, Hallmark is heading to Buffalo to bring their brand of holiday magic to the Bills Mafia. Holland Roden, Matthew Daddario and Tony Danza star in what’s sure to be a holiday classic for years to come, especially if you’re a Bills fan. The movie will arrive during the 2025 Countdown to Christmas celebration. — Sarabeth Pollock

Holiday Touchdown: A Bill’s Love Story premieres this fall on Hallmark Channel and streams the next day on Hallmark Plus.

Next Level Baker (Fox)

Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay is taking baking to new heights with Next Level Baker. After the success of Next Level Chef, a cooking competition that features three teams competing on three different levels of a moving set, it makes sense that Ramsay would expand the franchise and add baking.

With cold weather right around the corner, nothing beats a good baking show to help us prepare for the holidays and we’re excited to see how Ramsay puts his unique stamp on the genre. — Sarabeth Pollock

If you're looking for something to watch featuring young New Yorkers navigating love and life in the big city, there's a new series on Netflix starring Anna Kendrick that you might enjoy. Love Life originally aired for two seasons on HBO Max but has branched out to the global streaming service.

The logline for the series, created by Sam Boyd, reads, "From first impressions to lasting connections, New Yorkers navigate the twists and turns of love in this romantic comedy anthology series."

Love Life, which premiered in 2021, was one of HBO Max's first original scripted series when the fledgling streaming service debuted. It features Kendrick as Darby and William Jackson Harper as Marcus; the first season follows Darby's story while season 2 is devoted to Marcus. The series also features a number of cast members who show up in both seasons including Zoë Chao, Peter Vack, Sasha Compère, Lesley Manville, Jessica Williams, Christopher Powekk, Punkie Johnson and Keith David.

The series was popular with viewers and critics alike with a 79% "Certified Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Though fans enjoyed the premise and change of perspectives between the seasons, the series was an early victim of Warner Bros. Discovery's cost cutting measures. Some of the other series with a similar fate at the time include Gordita Chronicles and Minx.

After it was pulled from the streamer, Love Life languished in cold storage for a while before emerging recently on paid video on-demand platforms as well as Tubi, so being available to access the series on Netflix is a welcome change.

With 20 episodes between the two seasons, Love Life would be a great series to binge for anyone missing Emily in Paris, Girls or even the early days of Sex and the City. Though dating is at the forefront, there's a lot of self-reflection that takes place in Darby and Marcus' lives and viewers get to go along for the ride as they figure out their place in the world. With its vibrant characters, fast pacing and whip-smart writing, Love Life makes for a perfect weekend or late-night binge.

James L. Brooks has written and directed some all-time classics — including the Best Picture winner Terms of Endearment and the favorite As Good As It Gets — but it’s been 15 years since his last movie. That gap officially comes to an end with the 2025 new movie Ella McCay.

George Clooney is Jay Kelly. Or more accurately, Clooney stars in Jay Kelly, the Noah Baumbach 2025 new movie about a movie star evaluating his life and career.

The Oscar-winning actor gave an interview with Variety where he addressed an idea that some fans have about him only playing characters like himself; in a fun bit of meta, that is a question his Jay Kelly character is asked in the movie. • "Certified Fresh" indie movie starring Barbie Ferreira and John Leguizamo premieres on August 5

Though Bob Trevino Likes It may have slid under the radar of many, those that have seen the indie dramedy have loved it, as evidenced by the movie's 95% "Certified Fresh" score from critics and 98% positive score from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Ferreira stars as a young woman who befriends a man online who shares the name of her father, forming a surprising but heartwarming connection.

The Monkey (2025)

• Horror comedy begins streaming on Hulu August 7

2025 has been a big year for Stephen King, as The Life of Chuck, The Institute and soon The Long Walk have all been adapted for the screen. But my personal favorite from these King offerings so far this year is the absurdly fun The Monkey. Theo James stars as twins whose lives have been tormented for years by a toy monkey that has been a part of a number of surprising deaths over the years. When the monkey resurfaces, they have to figure out how to stop it before someone else they love dies. If you're a fan of outrageous, gory deaths, then this will be a must-watch.

Ted Bundy: Dialogue with the Devil

• True crime docuseries centered around notorious serial killer lands on August 7

The crimes of Ted Bundy have been well documented, but did you know that after he was arrested he assisted in an investigation into another murderer? That is the focus on Ted Bundy: Dialogue with the Devil, as it recounts Bundy's work with Detective Robert Keppel looking for the Green River Killer. The docuseries features never-before-heard-tapes that give a rare insight into the mind of Ted Bundy.

FX's Necaxa

• The Welcome to Wrexham sibling show premieres on August 8

Welcome to Wrexham has documented one of the most incredible stories in sports the last few years, as actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac (nee McElhenney) have buoyed the Wrexham team and town. But can lightning strike twice?

That's the question in FX's Necaxa, where Reynolds and Mac offer their support to Eva Longoria as she helps a recently relocated Mexican soccer club and tries to lift if to success.

Shanghai Noon (2000)

• Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson comedy rides to Hulu on August 8

As Shanghai Noon, the classic western comedy starring Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson, celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, you'll be able to stream in on Hulu starting this week. Shanghai Noon is a great blend of the martial arts, western and comedy genres, with Chan and Wilson having great chemistry. The sequel, Shanghai Knights, also lands on Hulu this week, though if you're picking between the two, go with the original.

Not Going Out, starring Lee Mack and Sally Bretton, is one of the funniest sitcoms of recent years.

Not Going Out season 14 is the latest series, and over the years, the show has seen a number of cast changes, but it's always been hugely funny.

One of the most influential movies of all time, Jean-Luc Godard’s Breathless, is inspiring a 2025 new movie, Richard Linklater’s Nouvelle Vague starring Zoey Deutch. In fact, it’s a direct inspiration, as Linklater’s movie is a chronicle of the production of Breathless.

Released in 1960, Breathless was the first feature film directed by Godard and was one of the prime examples of a movement in international cinema that came to be known as the French New Wave. Hollywood began to incorporate some of the styles of the French New Wave in the late 60s and 70s, contributing to that heralded era. But now, more than 60 years later Linklater and company are taking us all back where it started.

Nouvelle Vague release date

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Nouvelle Vague premieres exclusively in US movie theaters on October 31, two weeks before the movie officially hits streaming, landing on Netflix November 14.

The release in movie theaters will ensure that Nouvelle Vague is eligible for Oscars, but reports indicate that Netflix may be giving the movie a broader theatrical release than they often do, with The Hollywood Reporter saying the movie will screen in all of the US’s top 10 markets, presumably New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Dallas, Philadelphia, Houston, Washington, DC, Boston and Detroit.

If you’re not in one of those markets, or you just would rather wait until it’s on streaming, anyone with a Netflix subscription will be able to watch the movie at home starting November 14.

Nouvelle Vague cast

Zoey Deutch is the known name in the Nouvelle Vague cast, and she will be playing the American actress that worked on Breathless, Jean Seberg. Deutch has starred in popular movies like Juror No. 2, Zombieland: Double Tap and Set It Up, but she also previously worked with Linklater on Everybody Wants Some!!.

The other main members of the cast are French actors Guillaume Marbeck, who is portraying Jean-Luc Godard, and Aubry Dullin, portraying the lead actor in Breathless, Jean-Paul Belmondo, both of whom are starring in their first feature.

Nouvelle Vague behind the scenes

Filmed on location in Paris, Nouvelle Vague was a co-production between ARP Sélection, Detour Filmproduction, Ciné+OCS, Centre national du cinéma et de l’image animée and Canal Plus. Netflix acquired the movie for distribution.

The movie is produced by Laurent Pétin and Michèle Pétin.

Netflix has added My Oxford Year, the perfect summer romantic movie.

Based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Julia Whelan, it stars Sofia Carson as ambitious American Anna, who follows her childhood dream of studying at Oxford for a year-long graduate programme.

But when sparks fly between Anna and charming poetry professor Jamie (Corey Mylchreest), their relationship threatens the meticulous postgraduate life and career she planned for herself.

It's directed by Iain Morris, who wrote and created the hit British sitcom The Inbetweeners.

Sofia Carson, who is best known for the Disney musical-fantasy movie Descendants and its sequels, says: "Iain wrote and created one of the most iconic shows in British Television.

"Comedy is his language, so his vision of this film beautifully created a timeless, heartbreaking, sweeping romance, but grounded in laughter. Within one scene, you may fall in love, you may cry, but he will always make sure the joy of laughter is present.

"Our story reaffirms the belief that life's too short to not live it in love, to not live in joy. And I hope that truth rings true in the hearts of anyone who watches it."

The all-star cast includes Dougray Scott and Catherine McCormack, alongside Harry Trevaldwyn, Poppy Gilbert and Hugh Coles.

Sofia, who also acted as executive producer on the movie, knew she wanted Corey Mylchreest to play Jamie as soon as he came in for a chemistry read.

"He's an extraordinary force of an actor," she says. "When it came time to cast Jamie, I knew it would be Corey. As soon as he walked into the room for our read in London, Anna and Jamie came to life instantly.

"Together, we were dedicated to diving into Anna and Jamie's love story, to bring it to life with every bit of our hearts."

The book it’s based on

"My Oxford Year" was first published in 2018. It was the debut novel by Julia Whelan, who's also known for her acting, having appeared in the TV series Once and Again from 1999 to 2002. Whelan also wrote "Thank You For Listening: A Novel", which, according to Amazon, "tells the story of a former actress turned successful audiobook narrator — who has lost sight of her dreams after a tragic accident — and her journey of self-discovery, love, and acceptance when she agrees to narrate one last romance novel".

Domineering Dublin matriarch Agnes Brown is back on BBC One as a new four-part series of Brendan O’Carroll’s popular sitcom Mrs Brown’s Boys kicks off.

Filmed in front of a live studio audience, in the fifth series of the comedy, the unmistakable Mrs Brown unwittingly becomes the subject of a podcast in the opening episode. While later in the run, the meddling Mammy causes chaos when she "helps" neighbour Winnie (Eilish O’Carroll) prepare for her driving test and infiltrates daughter Cathy’s (Jennifer Gibney) book group after developing a taste for steamy fiction.

In the final episode, a curious new hobby emerges when Agnes discovers a surprising passion for erotic fiction – much to Cathy’s embarrassment.

In every episode there is something that stands out for me and filming in front of a live audience is essential to the show. They add so much to our performances and we would be lost without them.”

Mrs Brown’s Boys 2025 Christmas special

Mrs Brown’s Christmas and New Year’s specials have become a fixture in the BBC’s seasonal comedy calendar, and this coming Christmas will be no exception, with Agnes and the gang expected to be delivering their annual festive treats as usual this year. We will update once we know more.

Speaking about the difference between writing the series and the seasonal episodes, Brendan says: "Writing the miniseries is much more relaxing for myself and Paddy Houlihan, who joins me as a writer. With the Christmas Specials, I have to keep it within the Christmas period - including the Christmas trees, which have emerged as their own event! Here, we can focus on anything - within reason! Believe it or not, most of the storylines are based on true events that either happened to my family or have been told to me by people about their families.”

Zootopia 2 premieres exclusively in US movie theaters on November 26. The animated movie comes out a couple days later in the UK on November 28.

Headlining the new additions to the cast are Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All at Once), voicing Gary De’Snake, Fortune Feimster (FUBAR) as Nibbles and Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary) as Dr. Fuzzby.

Jared Bush is also the director of Zootopia 2. He was a co-director on the original Zootopia along with Byron Howard and Rich Moore and also previously directed Encanto.

Just a week after South Park season 27 debuted on July 23, the long-running Comedy Central animated series is taking a week off, as South Park season 27 episode 2 is not airing on Wednesday, July 30. The good news is that this won’t be an extended hiatus.

The next new South Park episode will premiere on Wednesday, August 6, on Comedy Central, confirmed in a preview shared by the South Park YouTube channel. But fans can still watch South Park on Wednesday, July 30, as Comedy Central is airing a more than 12-hour block of the show starting at 10 am and going through 10:30 pm.

South Park drew headlines with its season 27 premiere as they took direct aim at President Trump, putting him in a romantic relationship with Satan and portraying him with small private parts. The preview for South Park season 27 episode 2 teases that they likely aren’t done with targeting the president. Watch right here:

How much, if any of that footage, will actually be in the next episode of South Park is TBD, as creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone famously finalize episodes in the days leading up to air so they can be as timely as possible with their jokes.

Part of the reason that South Park has drawn so many headlines recently has to do with Comedy Central’s parent company, Paramount. Prior to the South Park premiere Paramount was criticized for cancelling The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the no. 1 rated late night talk show, with some seeing it as capitulation to the Trump administration to help Paramount’s planned merger with Skydance Media, silencing Colbert, who has been a Trump critic; the merger was officially approved by the FCC on July 24. Though The Late Show will continue to be on air through May 2026, and Colbert has not held back on any Trump jokes since the cancellation.

South Park, meanwhile, had just signed a new five-year deal with Paramount prior to the show’s season 27 premiere, and have shared details on how they were able to get their Trump jokes into the first episode.

You can watch South Park basically all day on Comedy Central on July 30 if you have the cable channel (either through a traditional pay-TV provider or live TV streaming services like Fubo, Hulu with Live TV, Sling TV or YouTube TV). Or you can stream any episode of South Park on-demand on Paramount Plus.

Again, South Park season 27 returns with its second episode on Wednesday, August 6, on Comedy Central.

Remember when The Martian won Best Comedy/Musical at the Golden Globes, or the continued classification of The Bear as a comedy despite a lot of evidence to the contrary? Well there’s no such confusion with Liam Neeson’s The Naked Gun — it’s a comedy to its core, and a pretty solid one at that.

A refresh of the Leslie Nielsen police comedies of the late 1980s and early 1990s, The Naked Gun is absolutely absurd and splendidly stupid, which is exactly what you’d expect from this franchise. Neeson takes over the role of Detective Frank Drebin (Jr.) and, along with Pamela Anderson, director Akiva Schaffer and producer Seth MacFarlane, they create a comedy that shoots off jokes first and worries about everything else later.

In the movie, Neeson’s Frank investigates the murder of a computer engineer in his own rogue style, but with help from his allies in Police Squad and the sister of the victim, Beth Davenport (Anderson), they eventually discover that a tech mogul is behind it all, with a sinister plan that will have consequences on a global scale.

Let’s just get it out of the way, this plot is a blatant rip off of Kingsman: The Secret Service. If they had taken a more generic murder mystery plot or corruption angle I don’t think I would have cared as much, but the fact that they took such a distinct idea that is so easily identifiable (at least for me; I love Kingsman) was a bit disappointing. The good news is that the plot is not important in enjoying The Naked Gun’s primary purpose — getting you to laugh.

In that department, the movie succeeds much more than it fails. Not every joke is going to land for everyone, but you won’t go more than a minute or two without some kind of joke or Easter egg, and a good majority of them will break through to at least earn a chuckle, while a solid number earned true laugh out loud moments for me (I particularly enjoyed the sequence when Neeson and Anderson have a weekend away at a winter cabin).

With a runtime of just 85 minutes, The Naked Gun doesn’t overstay its welcome. That being said, the jokes in the final act of the movie aren’t as consistently strong (there are a few gems in there) as it puts a little more focus on action and making sure the thin plot gets wrapped up.

A supporting cast that includes Paul Walter Hauser, CCH Pounder and Danny Huston are solid, but The Naked Gun is truly a showcase for Neeson and Anderson’s comedic abilities, and both are very good.

Though he’s best known for his roles in Taken and other action franchises, Neeson perfectly blends his tough guy persona with the inherent silliness of the character and script, reminding us that he is an underrated comedy star (a cameo in Ted 2 and a voice performance in The Lego Movie are past standouts). That being said, it’s a near-impossible task for anyone to take the mantle from Nielsen, whose deadpan delivery and pseudo-seriousness were perfect for these movies. Neeson does about as good as anyone could, though.

The true breakout of the movie, though, is Anderson, playing a comedic femme fatale. After earning strong reviews for her dramatic performance in 2024’s The Last Showgirl, Anderson reveals her best path forward in her second act may be as a comedic actress. She is great opposite Neeson and, with all due respect to Priscilla Presley (who makes a cameo appearance in the 2025 new movie), is one of the few things in the reboot I think exceeds the original trilogy.

Fans of the original Naked Gun franchise should thoroughly enjoy this movie, which follows the playbook to satisfying results, and a new generation should have fun with the outrageous, mile-a-minute pace. Without question, The Naked Gun is reloaded and a strong bit of summer entertainment.

In the Eternity trailer, the upcoming movie from A24 that is earmarking a TBD November release date, Elizabeth Olsen’s recently deceased character has to decide which of the two loves of her life she wants to spend eternity with in the afterlife.

Thankfully, moviegoers won’t have to make such a finite choice in what movies to watch in November, which to my eyes, is looking like the best month of new movie releases we’re getting this year.

Starting with Eternity, the movie hails from A24, the specialty studio that has a passionate base of moviegoers that will see just about anything they put out (of which I am one). But beyond its label, Eternity looks like a fantastic blend of comedy, romance and fantasy, with three fantastic actors leading the way, what looks like fun supporting turns from Da’Vine Joy Randolph and John Early and a unique, original premise.

If that doesn’t look like something you’re interested in buying a movie ticket for, great news, the November movie release schedule has a variety of genres that will satisfy just about anyone, with plenty of big name stars attached. Let’s break them down in order of their current US release date (some may be limited release initially).

Die, My Love

In the dramatic category is Die, My Love (November 7), starring Jennifer Lawrence, Robert Pattison, LaKeith Stanfield, Nick Nolte and Sissy Spacek, directed by Lynne Ramsay. The movie follows a woman struggling to maintain her sanity amid a variety of issues living in a rural area. Ramsay is a singular filmmaker, and Lawrence is earning some buzz that could see her earn her first Oscar nomination since 2016.

I Wish You All the Best (November 7)

I Wish You All the Best (November 7) is a coming-of-age indie drama featuring the likes of Alexandra Daddario, Lena Dunham and Cole Sprouse that has a handful of reviews, putting it right now at a 100% “Fresh” score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Nuremberg (November 7)

For those interested in history, particularly World War Two, Nuremberg takes place after the world, when a psychiatrist interviews Nazi leaders ahead of the Nuremberg trials, including Hermann Göring. Russell Crowe is playing Göring, with Rami Malek, Richard E. Grant, Michael Shannon, Leo Woodall, Colin Hanks and John Slattery also starring.

Predator: Badlands (November 7)

We’re getting the latest in the Predator franchise with Predator: Badlands. Prey director Dan Trachtenberg directs this new movie, which takes a different approach than past movies in the Predator franchise, as the iconic movie monster is actually going to be the hero of the story, with a young member of the species embarking on a dangerous first hunt. Elle Fanning also stars as a wise-cracking android.

The Running Man (November 7)

Edgar Wright, the fan-favorite director of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, and one of Hollywood’s newest and biggest stars Glen Powell team up for The Running Man, a new adaptation of the Stephen King novel about a reality TV show in the future where the goal is for contestants to survive 30 days as they are literally hunted.

Sentimental Value (November 7)

For fans of international movies, Sentimental Value is going to be the movie to keep an eye out for, as it reunites The Worst Person in the World team of Renate Reinsve and Joachim Trier. Stellan Skarsgård and Elle Fanning also star in this story of an artistic family that has to explore their memories and relationships as the father tries to make a new film.

Train Dreams

Train Dreams is getting a run in movie theaters before it premieres on Netflix later in the month (November 21). But wherever you watch it, the movie comes from the team behind the brilliant and Oscar-nominated movie Sing Sing. Train Dreams stars Joel Edgerton and Felicity Jones and tells the thoughtful and visually gorgeous looking story of a family at the turn of the 20th century.

That’s just the first week.

Jay Kelly (November 14)

Jay Kelly is another Netflix Oscar hopeful getting a theatrical release before premiering on the streamer. This one comes from Noah Baumbach and has the incredible cast of George Clooney, Adam Sandler, Laura Dern, Eve Hewson, Isla Fisher, Riley Keough, Patrick Wilson, Emily Mortimer (who also co-wrote the script with Baumbach), Billy Crudup and Greta Gerwig in a comedy/drama story about a movie star and his manager.

Keeper (November 14)

Then we get the latest thrill from Osgood Perkins (Longlegs, The Monkey) in Keeper that sees a couple’s romantic getaway become haunted by the haunting past of the property they’re staying at.

Now You See Me: Now You Don't (November 14)

With Now You See Me: Now You Don’t magic is back, and so is the original cast of the popular franchise, as Isla Fisher reunites with Jesse Eisenberg, Dave Franco and Woody Harrelson. They’re joined by new additions Justice Smith, Dominic Sessa and Ariana Greenblatt in trying to pull off a heist of Rosamund Pike’s villain.

Rental Family (November 21)

Brendan Fraser also returns in his first leading role since his Oscar win for The Whale with Rental Family. The story sees Fraser play an actor that is hired by a Japanese company where people can rent out family members to be stand-ins for specific events (something that is actually a real thing in Japan).

Sisu 2 (November 21)

Action fans will likely be stoked that a sequel to a cult favorite from the last few years arrives in November, as Sisu 2 picks up the story of the ex-soldier who plows through Nazis as he attempts to secure a fortune he’s procured. It’s like a World War Two John Wick.

Wicked: For Good (November 21)

Probably the biggest movie of the month will be Wicked: For Good, the concluding act of Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda’s (Ariana Grande) story that started with the smash hit Wicked last year (and my top movie of 2024). Can the sequel repeat that success?

Zootopia 2 (November 26)

Closing the month out there is the ideal family friendly option in Zootopia 2, the sequel to Disney’s popular animated movie that brings back Jason Bateman as Nick Wilde and Ginnifer Goodwin as Judy Hopps, along with a new roster of voice stars.

Hamnet (November 27)

Hamnet, the latest from Oscar-winning director Chloe Zhao that stars Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley as William Shakespeare and his wife Agnes as they deal with a personal tragedy away from the stage. This one may arrive in December for most audiences.

Who knows, there may still be a movie or two that gets added to the month (be it on streaming or in theaters).

While I’m definitely looking forward to a number of 2025 new movies in the coming months, but November looks like a movie fan’s paradise.

Who do you want to spend eternity with? That is the question at the heart of the new comedy, drama, fantasy, romance A24 movie starring Elizabeth Olsen, Miles Turner and Callum Turner, aptly titled Eternity.

This is another 2025 new movie from fan-favorite studio A24. Already in 2025, they’ve released movies that include Parthenope, Warfare, Friendship, Materialists, Eddington and more, with Highest 2 Lowest, The Smashing Machine, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You and Marty Supreme also on the docket for this year.

But if you want to know more about Eternity, then read on as we answer many of your biggest questions directly below.

Eternity release date

We don’t have a specific release date for Eternity at this time, but press materials shared by A24 indicate that the movie will be released in November. That gives us the options of November 7, November 14, November 21 and November 28 (possible chance they go with November 26, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving in the US).

Eternity joins a very busy slate of movies coming out in November, which include Jennifer Lawrence’s Die, My Love, Glen Powell’s The Running Man, Now You See Me: Now You Don’t and Wicked: For Good.

Olsen, Teller and Turner lead Eternity, as the characters in an afterlife love triangle. Eternity marks both Olsen and Teller’s second notable movies of 2025 (The Assessment for Olsen, The Gorge for Teller), while Turner was most recently seen in the Apple TV Plus series Masters of the Air.

Joining the trio in the Eternity cast are Oscar-winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph (The Holdovers, Only Murders in the Building), John Early (Search Party, The Great North) and Olga Merediz (In the Heights, Blockbuster).

Eternity director

In addition to co-writing the script, David Freyne also directs Eternity. Freyne has two previous under-the-radar movies, The Cured (2017) and Dating Amber (2020).

To no one’s surprise, Happy Gilmore 2 is a hit on Netflix, as the sequel to the beloved Adam Sandler comedy finally arrived on the streamer on July 25. But while we knew that the movie was set to have a number of cameos featuring real-life professional golfers and other celebs, I’m not sure anyone was prepared for just how many cameos there were.

Just about every major golfer of the last five years (sans Tiger Woods) and some of the greatest to ever play the game got a moment to shine in the movie. The movie even served as a peace between the PGA Tour stars and LIV golfers. But there were definitely a few cameos that were among my favorites.

If we’re handing out a best performance trophy among the professional golfers, that would definitely go to John Daly, who plays himself and serves as a wacky uncle to the Gilmore family. Then there are definitely a few jokes that I was pleasantly surprised that the golfers were OK with, most notably world No. 1 and recent Open Championship winner Scottie Scheffler poking some fun at himself and the incident of his arrest a couple of years back for a traffic violation. But neither of those was my favorite.

The best cameo from a pro golfer came from Will Zalatoris to create a fantastic callback to the original movie.

Zalatoris plays himself in the movie, but with a fun fictional twist. It’s revealed that Zalatoris was the young caddy that Happy has in the tournament where he qualifies for the pro tour, the one he famously tackled and choked as he went through joyous and frustrating moments on the course. In the sequel, Zalatoris is playing with Happy as a member of the tour, though he has a hard time shaking the trappings of the first time they were on a golf course together.

This is a great bit of meta humor, as when Zalatoris first broke out as a pro in 2021, many were quick to notice his resemblance to Happy Gilmore’s first caddy. Sandler even sent a tweet when Zalatoris was in contention at the Masters tournament, noting the comparison.

Never mind that Zalatoris was actually born six months after Happy Gilmore was released, the resemblance is perfect, and it made for one of the standout jokes in the movie.

You can watch both Happy Gilmore and Happy Gilmore 2 on Netflix right now, but only for a few more days as the original is leaving the streaming service at the end of the month.

Vladimir is a dark comedy series on Netflix that's based on the bestselling novel by Julia May Jonas.

It stars Rachel Weisz as a college professor whose life unravels when she becomes obsessed with her new colleague Vladimir, who's played by One Day star Leo Woodall. John Slattery, Jessica Henwick, and Ellen Robertson also star.

Other stars in Vladimir are Jessica Henwick who plays a character called Cynthia. She’s best known for playing Nymeria Sand in Game of Thrones and Colleen Wing in the Marvel franchise. She’s also been in Glass Onion, Moley, The Gray Man, Silk and The Matrix Resurrections.

John Slattery plays the professor’s husband, John. He stars in the Marvel movies as Howard Stark and played Lyle Bettencourt in The Good Fight and Roger Sterling in Mad Men. John’s also been in Arrested Development, The Adjustment Bureau and What We Do in the Shadows.

Ellen Robertson plays Sid. She’s been in Too Much, Breeders, The Outlaws, The Pale Horse and Black Mirror.

The below list of movies is taken from the major streaming services: Apple TV Plus, Disney Plus, HBO Max, Hulu, Netflix, Paramount Plus, Peacock and Prime Video. I'm also specifically picking movies that are new to streaming this month — in this case, these are 12 movies that are landing on one of the major streamers for the first time, or coming back to streaming services after only being available via on-demand.

So without further ado, here are my picks for the 12 movies to stream in August.

The Departed (Netflix)

Martin Scorsese's The Departed will always have a special place in my heart, as this Best Picture winner was my first real introduction to the master filmmaker. I've of course watched as much of his filmography as I can since then, but The Departed sticks with me as it is fun, has some great performances (particularly from Leonardo DiCaprio and Jack Nicholson) and is layered with details that enrich repeat viewings (the use of X in the movie has been well documented). While Scorsese has a lot of things in the works (including The Devil in the White City), we don't know for sure when we're getting his next movie. So streaming The Departed is a good way to bide our time.

Eenie Meanie (Hulu)

Samara Weaving has starred in a number of fan-favorite movies, including Ready or Not and Guns Akimbo. Could Eenie Meanie be next? The action movie sees her star as a former getaway driver brought back into the criminal world when her former employer offers her a chance to save her ex-boyfriend. A great supporting cast is on hand for this one as well, with Steve Zahn, Randall Park, Andy Garcia, Karl Glusman and Marshawn Lynch. Here's hoping this one puts the pedal to the metal for a fun watch.

Final Destination Bloodlines (HBO Max)

One of the biggest movies of the year makes its streaming debut to kick off August with Final Destination Bloodlines. The latest sequel in the horror franchise that is now 25 years old is widely viewed as the best, earning a 93% "Certified Fresh" score on Rotten Tomatoes. Focusing on a family, the characters learn that them being marked for death is something that has been lying in wait for generations. While the crazy deaths are a highlight as always, the movie also serves as one of the final performances from horror legend Tony Todd, so be sure to give a tip of the cap to him if you watch.

Freaky Tales (HBO Max)

It's been a big year for Pedro Pascal with The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Eddington, Materialists and The Last of Us season 2, but one movie of his you may have missed from this year is Freaky Tales. Set in 1987 Oakland, Calif., Freaky Tales answers the question of what happens when an NBA star, a corrupt cop, a female rap duo, teen punks, neo-Nazis and a debt collector collide. Written and directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (the duo behind Captain Marvel), it's flown under the radar, but audiences who have seen it have enjoyed it, based on the 89% positive score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Stream Freaky Tales on HBO Max in the US starting August 8.

The Friend (Paramount Plus)

This one is for all the dog lovers out there, as the breakout star of The Friend is the Great Dane Bing, who plays the central pooch in the movie, Apollo. The human star of the movie is Naomi Watts, who plays an English professor who unexpectedly is tasked with caring for Apollo after his owner and her mentor dies, and has to figure out if and how the dog can fit into her life. While it is a SPOILER, if anyone is on the fence about this movie, wondering if the dog dies or not, I will assure you that while this is a dramedy, Apollo makes it through A OK.

The Monkey (Hulu)

Similar to Pedro Pascal, 2025 has been a big year for Stephen King, as The Life of Chuck, The Institute and soon The Long Walk have all been adapted for the screen. But my personal favorite from these King offerings this year is the absurdly fun The Monkey. Theo James stars as twins whose lives have been tormented for years by a toy monkey that has been a part of a number of surprising deaths over the years. When the monkey resurfaces, they have to figure out how to stop it before someone else they love dies. Like Final Destination Bloodlines, if you're a fan of outrageous, gory deaths, then this will be a must-watch.

Mother! (Paramount Plus)

Mother! is one of the craziest movies I've ever seen, and I loved it. Darren Aronofsky uses the story of a woman (Jennifer Lawrence) whose life is turned upside down when her poet husband (Javier Bardem) gets a group of fervent fans at the house they are remodeling. From there, the movie draws parallels to the environment, religion and fanaticism in a psychological horror. It certainly won't be everyone's cup of tea, but it's a fascinating piece of work from Aronofsky, and a committed performance from Lawrence.

My Oxford Year (Netflix)

On the opposite end of the spectrum from Mother! is the new Netflix romance movie My Oxford Year. Sofia Carson stars as an American student at Oxford whose life takes a surprising turn when she meets a local boy, played by Corey Mylchreest. Dougray Scott and Catherine McCormack also star in this movie from Iain Morris (Time Bandits, The Inbetweeners). The fact that the movie was filmed on location on the Oxford Campus should also be a fun treat for viewers.

Night Always Comes (Netflix)

Another member of The Fantastic Four is back with another movie this month, as Vanessa Kirby stars in the Netflix original movie Night Always Comes. This one is a crime drama, with Kirby playing a woman who must confront her dark past over the course of one long night as she looks to secure a future for her and the brother she cares for. Kirby reunites with Benjamin Caron, who directed multiple episodes of The Crown (as well as Andor), for Night Always Comes.

Stream Night Always Comes starting August 15 on Netflix.

The Pickup (Prime Video)

Keke Palmer has already starred in one of the best comedies of the year in One of Them Days. Does she have another hit on her hand in The Pickup? Palmer stars alongside comedy icon Eddie Murphy and Pete Davidson in this action comedy, where Murphy and Davidson are armored truck drivers and Palmer plays a criminal looking to use them to score big, though she has a bit of history with Davidson's character that should make for plenty of fun banter. Ride Along director Tim Story directs.

The Thursday Murder Club (Netflix)

Richard Osman's best-selling murder mystery book The Thursday Murder Club is being adapted into the next big Netflix original movie. The all-star cast of Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley and Celia Imrie stars as four retirees who forgo the knitting circle and instead spend their golden years looking into cold case murders. But when one case proves to be not so cold, the group puts their skills to the test to get justice. There are five books in total in the Thursday Murder Club series, so if this one proves to be a hit, Netflix could have a new franchise on their hands.

Wet Hot American Summer (Netflix/Peacock)

We're in the final days of summer, so what better way to spend it than at Camp Firewood? This cult classic comedy has one of the most incredible casts: Janeane Garofalo, David Hyde Pierce, Michael Showalter, Marguerite Moreau, Paul Rudd, Christopher Meloni, Molly Shannon, Ken Marino, Joe Lo Truglio, Michael Ian Black, Amy Poehler, Bradley Cooper, Elizabeth Banks and H. Jon Benjamin. Wet Hot American Summer is hilariously absurd. And if you enjoy it, Netflix has two spinoff series that it did (which reunite the cast) that you can enjoy (Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp and Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later).

In two short weeks, we'll be celebrating the big 8-0 of one of comedy's most beloved icons: Steve Martin. But ahead of that monumental birthday (which takes place on August 14), you can revisit one of the actor-comic's most hilarious and heartfelt roles tonight with a special TV airing of that 1991 favorite Father of the Bride.

Airing Sunday, July 27 at 8:35 pm Eastern Time on ABC, Father of the Bride is a remake of the 1950 film of the same name, starring Martin as George Banks, a businessman and father who relatably (and hysterically) struggles with the thought of losing his beloved baby girl as his 22-year-old daughter Annie (Kimberly Williams) announces her engagement and prepares for a lavish wedding.

Along with Steve Martin and Kimberly Williams (in her film debut), the Father of the Bride cast features memorable turns by Diane Keaton as George's wife Nina—continuing her famed screen collaborations with screenwriter Nancy Meyers, including Baby Boom (1987), Father of the Bride Part II (1995) and Something's Gotta Give (2003)—Kieran Culkin as the Banks' young son Matty, George Newbern as Annie's groom-to-be Bryan MacKenzie and Martin's Only Murders in the Building buddy Martin Short as flamboyant wedding planner Franck Eggelhoffer.

Tonight's airing of Father of the Bride is part of ABC's ongoing partnership with The Wonderful World of Disney, with the alphabet network regularly airing Disney movies on Sundays for the past twenty years. Upcoming Disney titles that will soon find their way onto ABC include Avatar: The Way of Water, Elemental, Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 3 and Wakanda Forever.

While there are more than a handful of fun movies that are going to be new to Hulu in August, the last few days of July have some great offerings as well, most notably a pair of new series — a period drama and a true crime docuseries — that have high binge potential.

Operation Fortune (2023)

• Guy Ritchie reteams with Jason Statham for action comedy, arriving July 28 on Hulu

I generally enjoy Guy Ritchie movies, though one of his more recent efforts I have missed and need to play catch-up on is Operation Fortune (aka Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre). The director reunites with long-time collaborator Jason Statham for this action comedy, where a team of secret agents (which includes Aubrey Plaza and Bugzy Malone) brings in a well-known actor (Josh Hartnett) to try and infiltrate the ranks of an arms dealer (Hugh Grant). This seems like the perfect popcorn fare for summer streaming.

Dope Girls season 1

• The latest London-set period crime drama debuts on Hulu July 29

If you are a fan of Peaky Blinders or Hulu's previously released 2025 new TV series A Thousand Blows, then Dope Girls could be right up your alley. Starring Emmy-winner Julianne Nicholson, the new series is a period crime drama taking place in London shortly after World War I, where women look to assert their power by helping launch the night club scene in London's Soho. All episodes of the new series are going to be available immediately to stream.

Memoir of a Snail

• Oscar-nominated animated movie lands on Hulu July 29

Oscar-winner Flow and the Oscar-nominated The Wild Robot were among the biggest animated movies of last year, but flying under the radar was Memoir of a Snail. One of the five nominated movies in the Best Animated Feature category at the Oscars, this story about a melancholic woman named Grace Pudel (voiced by Sarah Snook) earned a 95% "Certified Fresh" score on Rotten Tomatoes, and in addition to Snook features the voice talent of Eric Bana and Jacki Weaver. Fans of animation should definitely check this one out.

Mr. & Mrs. Murder

• You can start watching the true crime docuseries as of July 30

The latest ABC News docuseries focusing on a salacious true crime is Mr. & Mrs. Murder. This series details a case where a husband goes missing, with rumors beginning to swirl that he was eaten by alligators, though no remains were found. But when his wife marries his best friend, suspicions begin to rise over what may have really happened. Many involved with the actual case will share their insights in this documentary that should be catnip for true crime fans.

The Devil Wears Prada (2006)

• Fan-favorite Meryl Streep movie hits Hulu on August 1

The internet has been abuzz recently as the first looks at The Devil Wears Prada 2 have started to come out. We have to wait until 2026 to see the long-awaited sequel to the fashion movie, but you can stream the original on Hulu this week.

Anne Hathaway stars as an aspiring writer who gets a job at a high-profile fashion magazine, where she works for the demanding and manipulative editor-in-chief played by Meryl Streep. It's a favorite role for the three-time Oscar winner (and one that she earned one of her many Oscar nominations for), but also features fun turns from Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci.

Old School (2003)

• Hilarious college comedy is enrolls on Hulu on August 1

August means college kids are heading back to campus, so why not celebrate by watching one of the funniest college comedies ever made? Old School stars Will Ferrell, Luke Wilson and Vince Vaughn as three friends who decide to start their own fraternity, despite the fact that none of them is in school anymore. Attempting to stop their good-natured debauchery is the uptight dead, played by Jeremy Piven. This is one of the movies that made Ferrell a star, and he absolutely steals the show.

Ready or Not (2019)

• You can find the horror/comedy on Hulu starting August 1

Another movie that is getting a sequel in 2026 that is streaming on Hulu come August, is Ready or Not, the horror/comedy from the Radio Silence directing team of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. Starring Samara Weaving and Adam Brody, the movie centers on a bride who marries into a wealthy family that has a strange tradition to welcome people into their family, one that has terrifying results. It's campy and one of the more original and fun horror movies of the last 10 years.

Adam Sandler fans are in their happy place, because not only has Happy Gilmore 2 finally arrived on Netflix, but subscribers worldwide can watch both the original Happy Gilmore and the newly released sequel on the streaming service for a hilarious double feature. But time is of the essence to do so.

While Happy Gilmore 2 will be available to watch on Netflix in perpetuity as a Netflix original movie, the original Happy Gilmore is set to leave Netflix at the end of July in the US (last day to stream will be July 31, it is staying on UK Netflix). So that gives viewers in America just a week to watch both Happy Gilmore and Happy Gilmore 2 on Netflix.

For anyone who needs a reminder, Happy Gilmore follows the titular aspiring hockey player with a short fuse who discovers that he has the ability to drive a golf ball further than anyone on the pro tour. So, when his grandmother’s house is being foreclosed on, he trades in his hockey stick for golf clubs to try and win enough money to save it.

In addition to Sandler, the movie stars Julie Bowen as Happy’s love interest Virginia, Christopher McDonald as Happy’s golf rival Shooter McGavin and the late Carl Weathers as Happy’s mentor Chubbs, with iconic cameos from Bob Barker, Ben Stiller, Kevin Nealon, iconic golf announcer Verne Lundquist and golfer Lee Trevino.

Happy Gilmore 2 picks up Happy’s story years later, as he attempts to make a comeback to help his daughter achieve her dream. Bowen, McDonald, Nealon, Lundquist and Stiller are back alongside Sandler, as is original cast member Dennis Dugan, who also directed the first movie; directing duties for the sequel have passed to Kyle Newacheck (Murder Mystery).

New additions to the cast include Sunny Sandler, Bad Bunny (aka Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio), Benny Safdie, Jackie Sandler, Sadie Sandler, Maxwell Jacob Friedman, Ethan Cutkosky, Philip Schneider, Conor Sherry, Hayley Joel Osment and Lavell Crawford.

There are also a host of cameos from professional golfers, including Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas, Nelly Korda, Nancy Lopez, John Daly and Jack Nicklaus. Other big names appearing in the movie include Travis Kelce, Eric André, Margaret Qualley, Ken Jennings, Eminem, Post Malone, Marcello Hernandez, Dan Patrick, Reggie Bush, Becky Lynch and Nikki Garcia.

Happy Gilmore 2 is now streaming on Netflix; subscription required to watch.

He's one of the biggest characters in golf by a long shot! When he exploded — verbally and otherwise — on our screens nearly 30 years ago, Happy Gilmore became one of Adam Sandler’s best-loved characters. A sequel has been a long time coming, but at last he's back today [Friday, July 25] for another round on Netflix.

To quote a certain spectator in the original, Sandler's "jackass" style of comedy was front and centre in the 1996 comedy. His wannabe ice hockey player with neither the temperament nor the talent has to raise the money to prevent his grandmother from losing her home.

Discovering he can adapt his limited sporting abilities to golf, he takes on the professionals at their own game, but using less-than-familiar clubs.

His fiery temperament and unconventional style make him an overnight sensation, drawing in the crowds despite the objections of the golfing elite, and inevitably making him some powerful enemies.

In Happy Gilmore 2, he’s older but not a lot wiser. Still loud and crude, yet as likable as ever, he's forced out of retirement to pay for his daughter's ballet school. Not only does the storyline sound familiar, but many of the characters from the first film are back, from Ben Stiller (complete with Mexican-style tache) to Christopher McDonald’s arrogant Shooter McGavin, Hap’s golfing nemesis. And little has changed visually, as Happy takes pride in wearing hockey gear instead of the Pringle knits and polo shirts favoured by his opponents.

Audiences loved the original so much that they gave it 85% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Especially popular, aside from Sandler himself, were the multitude of cameos, both from the golfing and wider world. Lee Trevino was one of the most recognisable, and the follow-up has even more.

Trevino, now 85, is back, this time alongside Jack Nicklaus, and there’s also a clutch of today’s golfers, including Rory McIlroy and newly crowned Open champion Scottie Scheffler. Watch out, too, for fleeting glimpses of Margaret Qualley, Eminem, Uncut Gems director Benny Safdie, and Tim Herlihy, Sandler's writing partner.

One face that's sadly missing from the sequel is Carl Weathers, who played Chubbs Peterson, the golf pro who spots Happy’s talent. The actor died last year, just months before the film started shooting. Although the character met an untimely end in the original, he was due to play a substantial part in the follow-up. Sandler revealed in recent interviews that the story and the script had to be rewritten, but fans will be delighted to see warm tributes to the great Chubbs.

Happy Gilmore is a perennial Sandler favourite, although the likes of The Wedding Singer (1998) and Billy Madison (1995) rank high when it comes to making us laugh.

But there have been times when the jokes have fallen flat. Sandler's been personally nominated for no less than 25 Razzies and one of them was Worst Actor in Happy Gilmore. He didn't win. But it got worse. Jack And Jill (2011) was nominated in all 12 categories and is the only film in cinema history to sweep the board, with Sandler’s name on six trophies, including Worst Actor, Worst Actress, and Worst Screen Couple.

He's regarded as something of a regular at the annual antidote to the Oscars.

But there’s another side to his work, one that you’d think belonged to somebody else. Despite just a handful of dramatic roles, he’s clearly a powerful straight actor and one who's already received awards recognition. He's yet to receive an Oscar nomination — many believe he was robbed of one for Uncut Gems (2019) — but

Critics' Choice, Golden Globe, Independent Spirit, and SAG nods have all come his way. And most of them were for the Safdie brothers’ frenetic drama about a jeweller who finds himself under intolerable pressure. In a movie that was both thrilling and exhausting, his performance left audiences stunned by a piece of acting that was a million miles away from his usual style. The praise for his manic turn flooded in, and the movie scored 91% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Yet, nearly 20 years before, he’d already astonished in a more downbeat role. In Paul Thomas Anderson’s Punch-Drunk Love (2002), he was the self-loathing Barry, dominated by his overbearing sisters, socially inept, and deeply lonely. His efforts to widen his world lead him to call a sex line, but it threatens to land him in deep trouble and potentially spells the end of what could be a relationship with the mysterious

Lena (Emily Watson). Audiences and critics alike saw for the first time that there was more to him than comedy.

And there was another glimpse to come in 2017’s The Meyerowitz Stories. Noah Baumbach’s ensemble drama took a bittersweet look at a dysfunctional New York family coming together to celebrate the father’s artistic career. This time he was in starry company, including Dustin Hoffman, Adam Driver, Emma Thompson, and regular collaborator, Ben Stiller, who played his more extrovert brother.

For now, Sandler is in his happy place, making us laugh, but he’ll be back in a more dramatic setting towards the end of the year in Netflix’s much-anticipated Jay Kelly, which reunites him with Baumbach. Boasting another ensemble cast including George Clooney, Greta Gerwig, and Jim Broadbent, it’s already tipped as an early Oscar contender, showing just how easily Sandler moves from comedy to drama.

Surely it’s only a matter of time before he gets the award recognition he deserves. It's how he wins.

The Hunting Wives may not have been on the radar of a lot of US Netflix subscribers, but allow me to reassure you that it should be. It debuted on July 21, and since then, I’ve found myself completely captivated by the murder mystery series.

It follows the story of Sophie O’Neil (Brittany Snow), a Massachusetts Yankee, who moves to East Texas with her husband and son in search of a fresh start. However, what she thought would be a nice, slower change of pace turns out to be a highly volatile tinderbox of drama waiting for just the right match to be lit.

From scandalous extramarital affairs to dubious past mistakes to murder, all the secrets that surround Sophie and her new housewife friend group are all hidden behind Texas-sized smiles and Southern hospitality.

Beyond the intriguing storyline that unfolds, my favorite aspect of the brand-new series is the witty comedy peppered throughout all the episodes. Right off the bat in the series premiere, I found myself laughing out loud as Sophie was given the culture shock of her life, meeting people who clearly don’t share her same political views. And her continued cultural adjustment kept me entertained.

Oh, and I can’t forget, the series is downright sexy. The women at the heart of the show may be housewives, but trust and believe, they make sure they’re never bored and have lives outside of taking care of their families. Heck, the leader of the bunch, Margo (Malin Akerman), prioritizes her sexuality and makes sport of her conquests.

Having said all of that, while the show has the recipe to make it great on its own, I’m also infatuated with it because it reminds me of a popular series that debuted back in 2004. I’m talking about Desperate Housewives.

The Emmy-winning series was a jewel in its prime. Similar to The Hunting Wives, the first season of Desperate Housewives kicked off with a mystery surrounding death, and as the episodes went by, all the women on Wisteria Lane were revealed to have a few skeletons in their closets, including an extramarital affair with someone a bit risque in the case of Eva Longoria’s Gabrielle Solis.

Desperate Housewives also had a healthy dose of comedy among all the jaw-dropping drama. To this day, I still find Felicity Huffman’s Lynette Scavo scene where she walked into a pool with a funeral dress on to get her misbehaving children one of the funniest moments I’ve seen in a drama. Take a peek at the scene below.

All in all, The Hunting Wives is a must-watch in my book, whether you’ve previously seen Desperate Housewives or not. But if you have, you may find it quite entertaining to draw a comparison between the two shows.

Stick season 2 makes the cut. Literally hours after the Stick season 1 finale dropped on Apple TV Plus, the streaming studio announced that it was renewing the sports comedy for a second season.

Created by Jason Keller and starring and executive produced by Owen Wilson, Stick has proven to be another solid Apple TV Plus original series, earning good notices from critics; the show has a “Fresh” rating via Rotten Tomatoes. So they’re teeing things up again to continue the story of Pryce “Stick” Cahill and his young protege, Santi.

Here’s everything we know right now about Stick season 2.

Stick season 2 release date

A released date for Stick season 2 has not been announced at this time.

There’s no indication of a release window for the next season, but if it follows a similar strategy as season 1 one did, then we could be looking at a release during the first-half of summer in 2026.

Stick season 2 cast

Stick season 2 is bringing the team back together, as all of the main cast are set to return for the new season.

This includes Wilson as Pryce, Peter Dager as Santi, Marc Maron as Mitts, Mariana Treviño as Elena and Lilli Kay as Zero. It’s unclear at this time if other big names from season 1, like Judy Greer or Timothy Olyphant, will return in any capacity.

Beyond the main cast, which real life golfers they are able to get to appear in Stick season 2 will also be something worth monitoring. Season 1 saw Collin Morikawa, Keegan Bradley, Max Homa and Wyndham Clark among the current professional golfers to make cameos, as did golf broadcasters and media figures Trevor Immelman, Good Good’s Matt Scharff, Brad Dalke, Garrett Clark and Dan Rapaport. TBD on if any of them will return and what other golf figures may make an appearance.

No plot details have been shared for Stick season 2, but there are some interesting potential options following the Stick season 1 finale.

After Pryce and Santi manage to win their first tournament, the two play together on their local course. This is a rare instance where Santi gets to see his mentor’s game, and he quickly comes away impressed. Could Pryce still have a future as a player, with his comeback attempt part of season 2?

The only hint that we have came from Apple TV Plus’ head of programming, Matt Cherniss, who said in a press release, “There’s plenty more in the bag for fans of the series, and we’re thrilled they’ll soon have the chance to discover Pryce Cahill’s next chapter.”

We’re getting new episodes of Only Murders in the Building in less than two months people!

Hulu officially announced that the Only Murders in the Building season 5 premiere is arriving on Tuesday, September 9; the comedy/mystery show will stream on Disney Plus in the UK. The first three episodes of the new season are going to be available to watch right away, with single episodes releasing weekly after that.

On top of that great news, we also have the official synopsis for Only Murders in the Building season 5 and the returning and new cast members for this season. Let’s start with the synopsis:

“After their beloved doorman, Lester (Teddy Coluca), dies under suspicious circumstances, Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short) and Mabel (Selena Gomez) refuse to believe it was an accident. Their investigation plunges them into the shadowy corners of New York and beyond — where the trio uncovers a dangerous web of secrets connecting powerful billionaires, old-school mobsters and the mysterious residents of the Arconia. The trio discovers a deeper divide between their storied city they thought they knew and the new New York evolving around them — one where the old mob fights to hold on as newer, even more dangerous players emerge.”

In addition to the lead trio of Martin, Short and Gomez, returning cast members for this season include Michael Cyril Creighton as Howard, Meryl Streep as Loretta, Da’Vine Joy Randolph as Detective Donna Williams, Richard Kind as Vince Fish and Nathan Lane as Teddy Diams (the latter returning for the first time since season 2).

New additions to the Only Murders in the Building cast include Téa Leoni (though she did have a brief appearance in the season 4 finale), Bobby Cannavale, Renée Zellweger, Logan Lerman, Christoph Waltz, Keegan-Michael Key, Beanie Feldstein, Dianne Wiest and Jermaine Fowler.

The only thing we’re missing is a trailer for the new season, but hopefully that will arrive soon.

Only Murders in the Building is one of my favorite TV shows right now, so I’m beyond ecstatic to finally know when the series is coming back, even if I have to wait about a week longer than usual (most previous seasons premiered the last week of August, while season 5 arrives the second week of September). With the introduction of the mafia and a cast of A-list guest stars, which may be the show’s biggest group yet, this makes Only Murders in the Building season 5 a must-watch in my books.

Molly Gordon is best known for her role as Claire on The Bear, the beleaguered romantic interest of Jeremy Allen White’s Carmy, a role that doesn’t get a lot of laughs in the “comedy” series (though my colleague Terrell Smith has made the case The Bear should be a drama). Though The Bear isn’t the best example, Gordon is a rising comedic talent in Hollywood. She’ll be showcasing that in her new movie, Oh, Hi, releasing July 25, but the best example of her comedic chops is in her 2023 movie Theater Camp.

Theater Camp was an indie darling when it was released. The movie is “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes, it received three Independent Spirit Award nominations, was listed as a Top 10 Independent Film of the year and its ensemble won a special jury prize from the Sundance Film Festival. Unfortunately, where the movie struggled was at the box office, where it made $4.4 million worldwide. In fairness, the movie never surpassed playing in 600 movie theaters nationwide.

I did head out to the movie theater to watch Theater Camp, and I can tell you it was an absolute riot and one of the funniest comedies I’ve seen in the last five years. Thankfully, it’s easy enough to discover Theater Camp for yourself right now, as the movie is streaming in the US on Hulu and on Disney Plus in the UK, as well as being available via digital on-demand if you’re not a subscriber to those services.

Filmed in a mockumentary style, Theater Camp follows the eccentric staff of a rundown theater camp in upstate New York as they try to keep the camp afloat. The staff consists of Gordon as Rebecca-Diane, Ben Platt as Amos, Noah Galvin as Glenn, Ayo Edebiri as Janet and Nathan Lee Graham as Clive. Jimmy Tatro also stars as Troy, the son of the camp’s owner, forced to step in as his mom (Amy Sedaris) is in a coma, but has no knowledge of the theater world.

In addition to starring, Gordon, Platt and Galvin co-wrote the Theater Camp script along with Nick Lieberman, based on a short film that they all made together. Gordon and Lieberman also co-directed the movie.

I did some high school theater, but the level of intensity that these characters show for their summer camp production is at a ridiculous level. That heightened sense of importance is just part of the comedy of the movie.

The ensemble award Theater Camp received was worthy, as everyone in the cast has their moments. Edebiri is great as a new instructor who lied on her resume to get the job but tries to stumble through it. Graham’s veteran and jaded teacher brings some hilariously hard truths to the campers. But the heart, and some of the best laughs, of the movie come from two tandems — Gordon and Platt and Galvin and Tatro.

Gordon’s Rebecca-Diane and Platt’s Amos are best friends who treat theater camp like they’re putting on a Broadway play. Their over-inflated sense of self-importance is so wonderfully juxtaposed to having young teens putting on a show in a small theater in the middle of nowhere, but damn it if you’re not laughing at all the pseudo-drama they’re creating for themselves.

However, my favorite pair is Galvin and Tatro. Tatro’s fish-out-of-water Troy quickly comes to rely on Galvin’s quiet stage/technical manager Glenn to help guide him through all things theater, while Troy helps build Glenn’s confidence, which pays off in the final act in a fun and surprising way.

Summer camp movies have been the setting for a lot of great comedies — Meatballs, Heavyweights, Wet Hot American Summer — and Theater Camp is right up there with those movies with how much it made me laugh. It’s time we started recognizing Theater Camp more regularly among those great comedies.

You've waited over two years for it, but here it is: South Park season 27 finally hits screens on Wednesday, July 23 ready to skewer a brand-new selection of current affairs.

You know what South Park is at this point: it's an animated comedy about the inhabitants of a Colorado town that just seems to be the center of everything that goes on. It parodies various topics in the news, with the last few seasons addressing AI, TikTok and the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Judging by its teasers and trailers, South Park season 27 looks set to depict a war with Canada, a series of plane crashes, ketamine use and... something about P. Diddy. Don't expect the series to shy away from divisive events.

Like many pre-streaming shows, the show is set to need some co-ordination to watch, especially for international viewers. So here's how to watch South Park season 27

If you watch South Park season 27 on cable, you'll be able to see it before anyone else.

The series will air on Comedy Central at 10 pm ET/PT every Wednesday from Wednesday, July 23. There are expected to be six episodes, which was the same count as in the last few episodes. That would cause the finale to be on Wednesday, August 27, but this episode count hasn't actually been confirmed at the time of writing.

How to watch South Park season 27 on streaming

If you don't want to watch South Park season 27 on cable, you can stream episodes, but each will be available online a day after it appears on Comedy Central.

The comedy movie is in trouble folks, and Liam Neeson is calling on all of us to do something about it. The good news is that an opportunity is right in front of us — buying a movie ticket for The Naked Gun, starring Neeson.

In its latest bit of clever marketing, The Naked Gun has released a faux PSA about the dire need to save comedies. Featuring slow-mo clips of classic comedies (all of which just happen to be either streaming on Paramount Plus or are titles that Paramount Pictures has the rights to) played over a slow piano tune, we’re told that “Every single hour in Hollywood a comedy script is rejected” and that last year fewer comedies came out than ever before (you’ll have to give us some time to fact check those stats). The last bit of text warns that soon, if the trend continues, no new comedies could come out.

While this is definitely The Naked Gun having some fun with the idea of a PSA, there is some truth to comedy’s struggles at the box office and how that has impacted them being made.

If we’re looking at the kind of PG-13/R-rated comedies like Anchorman, The Lost City and Tropic Thunder that the PSA features clips of, they’re not performing as well as they used to. The highest-grossing PG-13/R-rated comedy in 2025 is One of Them Days, which just made over $50 million at the box office earlier this year. And while there have been the occasional big comedy hits in the last few years, most have been sequels or related to high-valued IP (FYI, not counting Marvel movies as those are superhero movies first and foremost).

The last time that more than two PG-13 or R-rated comedies made the top 10 at the year-end box office was 2005, when Wedding Crashers, Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Hitch all achieved the feat.

So, will you help comedies get back on their feet and go see The Naked Gun, starring Neeson, Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser, CCH Pounder and Danny Huston, in movie theaters?

All jokes aside, The Naked Gun releases exclusively in movie theaters worldwide on August 1.

I have a huge smile on my face because Apple TV Plus has just announced Maya Rudolph's brilliant comedy Loot will return for its third season on Wednesday, October 15. The first two episodes will drop that day, with the remaining episodes of the 10-part series added every Wednesday through to December 10.

It was announced some while ago that we would be seeing more of Molly Wells (Rudolph), who aims to discover what life is really about after getting an $87 billion divorce settlement from her terrible tech billionaire husband, John Novak (Adam Scott).

However, as the wait grew, some fans, including me, began to wonder when and if we'd ever see season 3.

But thankfully Apple has put us all out of misery, and we will be betting more of this wonderfully fresh, vibrant, and fun comedy, which is packed full of great performances, not least Rudolph as Molly. She pulls off the quite incredible trick of making you sympathetic about a spoilt billionaire!

If you’ve not watched Loot, there are spoilers ahead, and please do watch it because it's truly hilarious. Easily the funniest comedy Apple has produced. Yes, it's better than Ted Lasso!

The big question for Loot season 3 is might Molly and Arthur, who works at her charity foundation, finally get together. The pair kissed twice in the season 2 finale, but their not together as Arthur has a girlfriend and isn't convinced that dating his billionaire boss is a great idea.

The short but funny trailer Apple has dropped gives us a tantalising hint that healing crystal hugger Molly and Arthur might be together as we see him in the background.

Teasing the new series, the makers say: "Molly has landed the jet for season three, with viewers left on the edge of their seats following the season two finale that saw Wells and her trusted assistant, Nicholas (Joel Kim Booster), board Molly’s private jet with her orders to take her as far away as possible after blowback from her fellow billionaires about stepping up philanthropy and her awkward exchange with her will-they, won’t-they colleague, Arthur (Nat Faxon).

"The upcoming season will also continue to follow the antics of the beloved group of misfits at The Wells Foundation as they work together so Molly can live up to her promise of giving away all of her vast fortune."

All the key cast are back, plus there are some new guest stars, including legendary Happy Days actor Henry Winkler.

It certainly is a happy day knowing that the first two episodes of Loot season 3 will land on Apple TV Plus on Wednesday, October 15, followed by one new episode every Wednesday through to December 10.

If you're anything like me, you know the struggles of trying to find something good to watch on Netflix — but while I was scrolling through the content mines on a quiet Monday evening, I stumbled across a hidden gem to watch.

That gem in question is the British dramedy Breeders, which has a 92% Rotten Tomatoes score. The 'deliciously dark Martin Freeman comedy' originally aired on FX in the US and Sky TV in the UK, until it came to an end in 2023 after four seasons.

Now, the first three seasons are available to watch on Netflix in the UK, while all four seasons are available to stream on Hulu in the US.

With Netflix being home to an array of critically acclaimed comedies like Nobody Wants This and A Man on the Inside, it's easy to see how Breeders may have been lost and forgotten in the endless library of content. However, if you want to give a more underrated comedy a try, then Breeders is an ideal binge-watch with its sharp and sardonic wit.

Breeders follows couple Paul (Martin Freeman) and Ally (Daisy Haggard) as they try to balance their full-time careers, home life and relationship with the trials and tribulations of raising their young children, Luke (George Wakeman) and Ava (Jayda Eyles).

The family essentially take on another child when Ally's estranged father Michael (Michael McKean) unexpectedly turns up, but Paul's parents Jackie (Joanna Bacon) and Jim (Alun Armstrong) are on hand to help, even if the concept of modern parenting baffles them.

I actually came across Breeders while looking for something similar to one of my favourite Apple TV Plus comedies, Trying, which tells the story of Nikki (Esther Smith) and Jason (Rafe Spall) who face new challenges and surprises when they adopt two children.

I still have a while to wait before Trying season 5 will be released, so Breeders is a great alternative to watch in the meantime as it delves into similar themes of family life and the everyday struggles of parenthood all packed into 30-minute episodes.

Both Breeders and Trying use humour to highlight the authentic highs and lows of raising children, but the latter is a lot more light-hearted and bright. In comparison, Breeders is darker and full of profanities as Freeman's character wastes no time in launching foul-mouthed tirades whenever he encouters an inconvenience.

So if you're looking for an angry yet amusing comedy then give Breeders a go.

Parents may be scouring for activities for their little ones as we reach the tail end of summer, which means it’s the perfect time for a popular, family-friendly movie from this year to become available at-home — Lilo & Stitch. As of Tuesday, July 22, those in the US can buy or rent Lilo & Stitch via digital on-demand platforms.

The live-action adaptation of the favorite Disney animated movie, Lilo & Stitch is one of the biggest 2025 movies. It earned a “Fresh” score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences made it “Verified Hot” with a 92% positive score. They backed that up at the box office, with Lilo & Stitch earning the second most money at the US box office as of publication behind A Minecraft Movie.

Now, whether you saw it in movie theaters and want to rewatch it or are looking forward to seeing the movie for the first time, you can do so from your own home, watching Lilo & Stitch on-demand through the likes of Prime Video, Google play and more.

Lilo & Stitch follows a mischievous alien that crash lands in Hawai’i and, confused as a strange looking dog, is taken in by a young girl named Lilo. Together they form a bond, teaching Stitch what it means to be part of a family.

For those that are interested in owning a physical DVD copy of Lilo & Stitch over a digital copy, the wait will be a little longer, as the Lilo & Stitch DVD won’t release until August 26.

And for those wondering about Lilo & Stitch’s streaming plans, we know it will premiere on Disney Plus, but an exact date for that hasn’t been shared as of yet.

The Disney live-action adaptations of classic animated movies has been a trend for a while, but Lilo & Stitch is widely viewed as one of the better ones from recent years; particularly over the other Disney live-action movie from earlier in 2025, Snow White. In fact, we already know that we are getting Lilo & Stitch 2 in a few years.

Lilo & Stitch also was one of two big live-action adaptations that dominated the summer box office, the other being How to Train Your Dragon, which is also now available to watch at home.

It was decided on a coin toss. The winner would take our eldest to see the new Jurassic Park film, while the loser would be off with our youngest to see the Smurfs movie.

I lost and was prepared for the worst when I saw it had a 20% Rotten Tomatoes critics rating, but Smurfs turned out to be a breezy, fun family movie with something for everyone. OK, it’s not Toy Story, but I do wonder what some critics expect from a movie aimed at young children. There are some nice comedy moments, particularly around Sound Effects Smurf, who provides funny sound effects, including bleeping out rude words.

The plot revolves around a new Smurf called No Name (James Corden), who, unlike Sound Effects Smurf, Brainy, and the others, has yet to discover what his special ability is. Smurfette (Rihanna) and Papa Smurf (John Goodman) assure No Name that he will find his power. No Name finally gets his chance to shine when Papa Smurf is kidnapped by Gargamel’s brother, Razamel, who's after the magic book Papa Smurf is hiding, which will give him ultimate power over the universe.

In a nice twist, Razamel, though, is also facing family issues in the form of his needy brother, the traditional Smurf villain, Gargamel, accompanied as ever by his trusty cat, Azrael. Azrael is just great and steals almost every scene he's in!

The plot is refreshingly simple after getting my head around the new Superman movie, and there are some really nice touches. I laughed out loud finding out where Razamel’s secret lair is! It's certainly not where you might expect. There’s also some nice comedy provided by Razamel’s assistant, Joel, who’s just left school and sees this as his big break. Unfortunately, he’s dealing with the boss from hell!

One of the most joyous sequences in the movie is when No Name and Smurfette shift between different realities while being chased by Razamel. During the chase, they move between various animation styles, including claymation and, amusingly, an 8-bit video game.

Rihanna also provides a great track for the movie in "Friend of Mine".

At just one hour and 32 minutes, Smurfs doesn't outstay its welcome. It's not a classic, but it never deserves just 20% on Rotten Tomatoes. And I certainly enjoyed the Smurfs way more than A Minecraft Movie!

The indie movie received a minimal run in movie theaters earlier this year, so this will be the first chance for many to see the movie. But based on reactions from those that have seen The Assessment — the movie has a 92% fan score on Rotten Tomatoes, and is "Certified Fresh" — this is definitely one to check out.

Red Eye season 1 & 2

• UK crime drama takes off on Hulu as of July 22

UK crime drama Red Eye, which follows a London police officer tasked with transporting a man back to Beijing where he is accused of a crime, learns that she might actually be in the middle of a major conspiracy. Jing Lusi and Richard Armitage star in the first season of series that fans couldn't get enough of, while Red Eye season 2 continued the story of Lusi's Hana Li as she gets involved in another case. Could be a fun UK import to fill your summer nights.

Washington Black

• Adaptation of best-selling novel premieres on July 23

Sterling K. Brown already had a Hulu hit earlier this year (the Emmy-nominated Paradise), now he's back with as star and producer of the new series Washington Black, an adaptation of the novel by Esi Edugyan. The 19th-century-set series follows the titular young man from Barbados, played by Ernest Kingsley Jnr., who must go on a globe trotting adventure when his life is turned upside down. Could Brown have a second streaming hit on his hands this year?

Who Wants to Be a Millionaire season 4

• The classic game show returns with new episodes featuring celebrity contestants, streaming on-demand on Hulu starting July 24

It's a great summer for fans of game shows with the likes of The 1% Club season 2, The Quiz with Balls season 2, Celebrity Family Feud season 11 and Press Your Luck season 6, all of which stream on-demand on Hulu. But get ready for another, as Who Wants to Be a Millionaire season 4 premieres this week, with its episodes also streaming on-demand on Hulu.

We all know the basics of the classic game show, but this edition is hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and feature celebrity contestants playing for charity. Can any of them win $1 million?

Mad About You seasons 1-7

• All episodes of the classic sitcom land on Hulu on July 24

Mad About You hasn't bridged the generational gap that Friends or The Office has... yet. One of the top sitcoms of the 90s starred Helen Hunt and Paul Reiser as a married couple going through life's up and downs in New York. It won 12 Emmys, most for Helen Hunt as Lead Actress in a Comedy and the legendary Mel Brooks in a recurring guest role. With all seven original seasons (there was a 12-episode revival that aired in 2019) streaming on Hulu, take a break from your rewatches of Friends and The Office and give Mad About You a try.

Summer Baking Championship season 2

Thanks to my wife, I have gotten into baking shows, particularly The Great British Baking Show. But we wont' be getting the latest season of The Great British Baking Show (aka The Great British Bake Off 2025) until later this fall, so to bide the time Summer Baking Championship season 2 (which originally aired last summer) is a good alternative. Jesse Palmer hosts as 10 top bakers from the US cook up delicious baked treats in a fun competition.

It's TV magic. Over the course of nearly 70 years, the Eurovision Song Contest has become a much-loved celebration of music, culture and diversity with a large dash of camp. But, apart from a classic episode of TV’s Father Ted, it never went any further — until it got the movie treatment five years ago. To the sound of "Volcano Man", Eurovision Song Contest: The Story Of Fire Saga burst onto Netflix, and it’s still hitting the right note with audiences.

Viewers welcomed it with a 77% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The story followed long-term friends Lars Erickssong (Will Ferrell) and Sigrit Ericksdottir (Rachel McAdams), better known to the locals in their Icelandic village as Fire Saga, as they tried to fulfill their dreams of winning the Eurovision Song Contest. After being cursed by technical problems in the qualifying competition, it looked like their chances were nil until a freak accident wiped out the other acts, and they found themselves off to Edinburgh for the main event.

Competition is fierce, especially from Russian singer Alexander Lemtov (Dan Stevens), who is the favorite to win, but they make it to the final and take the risk of changing their song to a heartfelt ballad about their home country. Does their dream come true? In a way, it does.

Other storylines, including Sigrit’s seemingly unrequited love for Lars, are packed into a film where comedy is just as important as the music. With a script from Ferrell and writing partner/friend Harper Steele (the heartwarming documentary about their friendship is also on Netflix in the US and the UK), the wacky jokes count is high and there’s a handful where taste has gone out the window. It’s exactly what Ferrell fans love. But alongside the broad, silly humour, McAdams brings some welcome tenderness, something that reveals unexpected nuances in Ferrell’s acting.

It may not be his usual style, but it definitely suits him and helps him fight off the competition from Stevens as the gloriously villainous Lemtov.

An even bigger surprise was waiting when the Academy Awards came along, with the movie's climactic ballad "Husavik (My Home Town") receiving a nomination for Best Original Song. A proper tearjerker, it's one of the two numbers that will be forever associated with the movie – the other being "Jaja Ding Dong", which is better known for its suggestive lyrics.

Among the familiar faces in the cast — yes, it includes Graham Norton — is Pierce Brosnan, who plays Ferrell’s disapproving father, despairing at his son’s longing to be famous for his music. Despite all the songs in the film, Brosnan doesn’t lend his voice to any of them, although his infamous singing efforts in Mamma Mia (2008) have just arrived on Netflix. He’s never been allowed to forget them, and they set an unfortunate trend. As Ferrell’s dad, Erick Erickssong, he gave an Icelandic accent his best shot, but it wasn’t good enough for the local media who were quick to point out its shortcomings.

Not that it's held him back, as he's now a major player in one of Paramount Plus’s most successful series ever, MobLand, which has just been renewed for a second season. By the time it was greenlit, some 26 million viewers had tuned in to see Brosnan, Helen Mirren, and Tom Hardy in a gritty gang war drama that had audiences hooked right from the start. With Brosnan and Mirren leading the Harrigan family in their battle for control over the local crime world, there were plenty of deaths, run-ins with the police and double dealings, all with their fiercely loyal fixer Harry Da Souza (Hardy) at the heart of the action.

The first season reached a shocking climax but, with unfinished business between the Harrigans and their arch enemies, the Stevensons, and new rivals emerging from the shadows, this second season was almost inevitable. And, although the cast has yet to be confirmed, with all the lead actors surviving that season finale, chances are high that Brosnan and Mirren, as well as Paddy Considine as their eldest son Kevin, will all return. Co-writer Jez Butterworth (Indiana Jones and the Dial Of Destiny, Ford v Ferrari/Le Mans ‘66) has already said that Da Souza’s stabbing wasn’t fatal, so we could be seeing more of Hardy as well.

There's no word yet on the script or when season two is likely to arrive, but the fast turnaround for the show’s first outing — production started in November 2024 and wrapped in March of this year, just days before its debut — means the launch could be sooner rather than later. The Harrigans finished season one leading the way in their power struggle, but with the ambitious Kevin plotting a coup and the arrival of the mysterious Kat McAllister (Janet McTeer), the future looks less than peaceful.

Once again, though, Brosnan got the thumbs down when it came to his character’s accent. The Harrigan patriarch comes from Kerry in Ireland, so the actor consulted a voice coach to make sure his accent was as authentic as possible. The finished version was also based on a real-life Kerry man but, for the Irish media, it wasn’t close enough and he was back in the firing line. He just can’t catch a break.

Ari Aster is known for dealing in the surreal, whether it be a cursed family in Hereditary, a bonkers cultural rite in Midsommar, or however you want to describe Beau Is Afraid. In Eddington, Aster takes it to the surreal time of May 2020, when pandemic lockdowns and racial justice battles combined to create a hectic summer.

Set in the fictional town of Eddington, N.M., the movie follows county sheriff Joe Cross (Joaquin Phoenix) and his battle with the mayor, Ted Garcia (Pedro Pascal), over what is the right way to lead their town amidst the turbulent times of early pandemic, where any act can be made to look politically motivated and blown out of proportion.

The movie takes some of the classic Western ideas and turns them on their head for this modern story. For most of the movie, it works to create a gripping, off-kilter take on the western genre that has its fair share of things to say about the issues of today. Though it does become too big for its britches, especially in the third act, overall Aster’s ambitious filmmaking pays off enough for a successful endeavor.

The big idea at the center of Eddington that Aster appears to be getting across is that certain individuals will attempt to hijack positions and ideals for their own benefit, playing into the extremes on both sides. This is present in Joe as he embraces conspiracy theories as he runs for mayor against Ted, but also in the characters like Eric (Matt Gomez Hidaka) and Brian (Cameron Mann), who get involved in protests as they pursue a girl, then later switch ideals when the other side better suits them.

While this idea remains throughout the movie, the thread starts to get lost when the focus of the plot turns to something else beyond the political battle between Joe and Ted, instead opting for a bigger, more action-packed third act. Bigger is not always better, especially in this case. All that contributes to a run-time that nears the two-and-a-half-hour mark, which is hard for the movie to sustain.

Where Eddington is at its best is the standoffs between Phoenix and Pascal’s characters. Though rather than having a shootout at dawn, phones are often the weapon of choice in Eddington (guns do get drawn eventually, though). Aster is clear that what we share and read on our devices can be damaging and dangerous in their own unique way.

Considering their star power, it may seem odd that I haven’t mentioned either Emma Stone or Austin Butler yet, but that’s because their impact on the story is minimal. While some backstory surrounding Stone’s character Louise is a motivating factor between the rivalry between Joe and Ted, we don’t get enough of her interacting with everyone else to feel her true weight on the story. Then Butler is basically here for a cameo in one of the stranger scenes in the movie. I won’t judge either of their performances because there isn’t really enough to go on as they’re here for a minute and then basically non factors.

Aster is not interested in a John Wayne-type hero riding into town and saving Eddington. Instead he chooses to investigate the fallacies and dangers of both extremes and how they can be manipulated. It mostly works and is done in a smart and even at times humorous way. Where the movie struggles is not knowing when to rein itself in. I wouldn’t put Eddington ahead of Midsommar of Hereditary in the lineup of Aster’s work, but it’s another big swing from the director that is worth a watch.
