The 2025 Daytime Emmy Award nominations have been announced, and the What to Watch team has been counting down to the big ceremony on October 17.

As I personally wait to see who will walk away with some gold hardware when the time comes, I’ve gone through several of the Emmy categories to offer my take on who should win. Previously, I made my arguments for why The Young and the Restless’ Eileen Davidson and Courtney Hope should respectively win for Outstanding Lead Actress and Outstanding Supporting Actress. Now it’s time to tackle the Outstanding Supporting Actor category.

This year’s nominees for Outstanding Supporting Actor are no surprise, as they all delivered an amazing body of work in 2024. Take The Young and the Restless’ Michael Graziadei, for example. Graziadei did a bang-up job portraying a grieving Daniel Romalotti, who was wrestling with difficult emotions after losing the love of his life in Heather Stevens (Vail Bloom). Not only that, the Daniel character had to fight for his freedom after being framed for Heather's murder, and be a supportive father to a daughter who lost her mother.

Days of Our Lives’ Blake Berris was also a standout portraying Everett/Bobby. The dissociative identity disorder storyline usually pushes an actor to dive deep into their reservoir of talent to effectively play different people in the same soap, and Berris didn’t disappoint.

The rest of the supporting actor category this year is rounded out by General Hospital actors, all of whom are no longer present on the canvas of the show yet are incredibly deserving of a win.

First, there’s longtime General Hospital star Jonathan Jackson. Many fans welcomed Jackson’s return to the soap as Lucky Spencer, and he was tied into a few life-or-death scenarios. He popped back on the canvas trying to escape a deadly hostage situation with Sidwell (Carlo Rota), was devastated he couldn’t be the one to save his sister’s life and he became the first person to learn that Kristina (Kate Mansi) tried to kill the love of his life Elizabeth (Rebecca Hearst), who it was also nice to see him reconnect with after all these years.

Gregory Harrison was also exceptional as Gregory Chase in General Hospital. Although his time on the show was brief, I can’t deny how impactful it was watching Harrison’s Gregory Chase struggle with ALS, while making a profound impact on the lives of his family members and friends. His last moments as Gregory Chase, in particular, were tearjerkers.

And as many heartstrings as Harrison pulled on among viewers, I think it will be Tajh Bellow who walks away with the Daytime Emmy this year for his portrayal of TJ Ashford.

Though the powers that be inexplicably phased out the character in the current landscape, the scenes Bellow delivered in 2024 were some of the best of the year as a grieving parent. Not only did he have to show the sadness that comes with losing a child, but he also was forced to show the anger and frustration that comes with learning that had the child survived, his pseudo sister-in-law/surrogate had every intention of keeping the baby.

Adding to Bellow’s remarkable year was the subsequent storyline of having to pick up the pieces of his shattered dream without his partner, Molly (Kristen Vaganos). Bellow gave viewers two versions of heartbreak simultaneously, as Molly essentially was incapable of helping TJ mourn their daughter or being a common-law wife to him.

On a final note, while I would again surmise that Bellow has this locked in the bag, I won’t rule out the small chance that Harrison comes up victorious.

When it comes to soaps in the US, there’s one thing that fans can always depend on — drama. From The Young and the Restless to The Bold and the Beautiful to General Hospital to Days of Our Lives to Beyond the Gates, the Big Five of daytime is set to bring forth some must-watch TV during the week of August 11. We’re talking romances heating up, plots thickening, mysteries continuing to unravel and what would the soaps be without the occasional life-or-death scenario?

Tony DiMera is a man on a mission in Days of Our Lives. He’s trying to put the family business back in the family to honor his father, so will he be the one to discover Stefano’s possession?

Tony (Thaao Penghlis) returned to Salem with a plan to restore DiMera Enterprises to the DiMera family. Upon his arrival, he found EJ (Dan Feuerriegel) fighting to keep Johnny (Carson Boatman) from going to jail for shooting him. With EJ’s mind occupied, Tony told Anna (Leann Hunley) that getting the company back was all up to him.

We think that as someone who isn’t living in Salem full-time, but as someone who knows Stefano better than most, Tony is the perfect person to figure out the mystery of Stefano’s return.

We’ve previously speculated that Rachel might be possessed by Stefano’s restless spirit, and what’s more is that she might be the person who shot EJ. This theory starts to solidify as we consider the motivation to shoot EJ.

Stefano could be angry that EJ isn’t working harder to get DiMera Enterprises back from the Kiriakises and is instead focusing on his own endeavors. It’s easy to imagine Stefano trying to get EJ out of the way using the only vessel he has available, one that would not arouse suspicion: Rachel.

Rachel, of course, was plagued by health issues as a result of “witnessing” the shooting, even though she only saw Johnny (Carson Boatman) with a gun and never saw him pull the trigger. We know Stefano’s nickname, The Phoenix, referred to his ability to come back to life time and time again, and what better way to come back than to take the form of a child who can carry out actions without anyone suspecting anything?

As an observer, Tony might be able to see that while Rachel already had some troubling traits, her recent actions are reflective of his father’s trademark personality quirks. In fact, with everything going on, he might just be the only person to really be able to see what’s going on with her, and from there, he might turn to Marlena (Deidre Hall) for help casting his father’s spirit out of the child.

Tony could be the only person to stop Stefano before he starts causing even more problems for his children and the residents of Salem. But first, he’ll have to find a way to convince people that Rachel is possessed by the spirit of The Phoenix, and that could prove to be challenging.

Rachel Black could be right in the middle of Stefano DiMera’s posthumous return to Days of Our Lives, and the signs have been pointing to it for a while. Not only that, but the little girl could be the perfect target for possession because she already has psychic gifts.

I remember thinking there had to be something going on with Rachel’s stomachaches this past spring. They were too intentional to be a coincidence.

The little girl, played to perfection by Alice Halsey, was plagued by stomachaches after witnessing what she believed to be Johnny (Carson Boatman) shooting her uncle EJ (Dan Feuerriegel).

Not only that, but she had a very troubling dream about her Grandpa John (Drake Hogestyn) that led to another stomachache. She told her mother that she dreamed he was dead, leading Kristen (Stacy Haiduk) to reassure her daughter that John was perfectly fine and they would pay him a visit soon. Little did Kristen know, John was near death in the hospital, and he died soon after. This had me wondering if the little girl had some latent psychic powers coming to the fore.

Over the past few days, there has been a lot of social media and internet chatter that it’s possible that Stefano DiMera’s return could be tied to Rachel. Could it be that his spirit decided to take over the body of a little girl in hopes of drawing the least amount of suspicion possible? Is that why EJ’s mother, Susan (also played by Haiduk), can feel Stefano’s presence all around the DiMera mansion?

What’s more is that if our theory is true, then it’s also very possible that Rachel’s stomachaches are tied to when Stefano is possessing her, and that could be why she’s so upset about the night her uncle was shot.

EJ can’t remember who shot him, and despite Johnny, Chanel (Raven Bowens) and Roman (Josh Taylor) being present at the mansion with an available gun, there’s nothing linking them to the shooting. But Rachel was there, and Rachel saw Johnny with the gun. It looked like her stomachaches were tied to being upset about Johnny getting in trouble for shooting his father, but what if they’re actually a result of the little girl being locked in a battle for control with The Phoenix?

There’s no doubt that Stefano would jump at the opportunity to wreak havoc on Salem without anyone realizing it’s him. Taking over his young relative’s body is a great way to go unnoticed, and it’s also a great explanation as to why Rachel has been acting so strangely.

No one warned me when I started covering soaps a few years back that I'd become so invested in the stories that missing an episode or two (or three or four) could really throw me off. So now we want to know how you deal with missed episodes of your favorite soap by voting in our poll below, or leave a comment if you don't see a response that matches your strategy.

I'll admit, early on in my soaps coverage days, I wasn't as worried about missing an episode here or there. But unlike network or cable TV shows with a new episode every week, soaps air every day and a missed episode can throw off the whole experience if something big happens while you were away.

It was one thing when I only covered The Bold and the Beautiful. Catching up on the half-hour soap was easy, even if I sat and watched all of the episodes back to back so that I was on track once again. Adding Days of Our Lives to the mix complicated things because trying to catch up on an hour-long show can be challenging if you've missed more than one or two.

Recently I attended San Diego Comic-Con and missed a few episodes of the daytime dramas I cover. My plan had been to watch them upon returning home each night from the pop culture confab. While sitting in the press room working on an article, my esteemed What to Watch colleague sent me a message that something big happened on B&B and I was instantly filled with FOMO. Was I missing a big story? Should I watch right away?

Trying to catch up on one show was hard enough, but catching up on missed episodes, while staying on top of new episodes, was downright challenging.

Since B&B is shorter, I was able to watch those episodes but for Days I turned to a mix of reading recaps, watching clips and scouring social media for the big events everyone was talking about. In some cases I went back and watched key events in the episode.

Now, I realize that in my case it's a bit different. I write about soaps for a living so I need to stay on top of what's happening. If that wasn't the case, I'm not sure I'd feel so much pressure to catch up.

Young Rachel Black has been dealing with a lot lately, including seeing Johnny (Carson Boatman) with a gun the night her uncle EJ (Dan Feurriegel) was shot. The traumatic experience led to stomachaches, which arrived at the same time she lost her grandfather. Now she's back, and her grandmother Marlena (Deidre Hall) has questions for her.

There’s not a lot of stability in the TV world these days, and that’s why the Days of Our Lives two-year renewal makes me very happy.

Currently in its 61st season, the Days of Our Lives renewal will extend the Peacock soap through seasons 62 and 63, which coincides with the 2027-2028 television season. In an era of uncertainty, the news offers production teams the ability to plan for the future with long-term story arcs and thrilling new and returning cast members.

Days of Our Lives moved from NBC to Peacock in 2022. Established fans followed the show to its new home, but the show also grew a new fan base of viewers who were just discovering the show in the streaming sphere. I know it’s a lot easier for me to tune in on Peacock whenever I like than to be stuck watching at a certain time or the following day.

But in an era of TV contraction when series are frequently cancelled after a single season (or worse, after a handful of episodes), I have come to really and truly appreciate the bedrock foundation and stability of soap operas.

CBS added Beyond the Gates in February 2025, making it the newest soap opera to debut after several longstanding soaps, like Guiding Light, All My Children and As the World Turns, were sent packing in recent years. The addition of a new soap is encouraging when it would be so easy for networks to add another hour of local news coverage or another syndicated talk show.

As the only soap that calls a streaming platform its home, Days of Our Lives is the best of both worlds. It offers the nostalgia of days gone by with a soap that has been around for over six decades, while paving the way for a strong future with hot new stars who learn the ropes from beloved soap veterans who guide them along the way.

Like other soaps, Days of Our Lives loves a good long-form story, and knowing that the show will have at least two more seasons to play with gives writers time to plot what’s going to happen next. That creative freedom will pay off in dividends as the show continues into season 62 this fall.

I’m glad the powers that be at Peacock can see that continuing the legacy of Days of Our Lives is a smart investment, and I’m hopeful that the renewals will continue so that the stories coming out of Salem never end.

I previously offered up my reasons why I think Eileen Davidson is a shoo-in for the Outstanding Lead Actress In A Daytime Drama Series category. Her portrayal of The Young and the Restless' Ashley dealing with dissociative identity disorder and subsequently trying to piece her life back together, even as Martin (Christopher Cousins) continued to torment her family, was brilliant. And as I look to the Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Daytime Drama Series category, I again have to look to the long-running CBS soap.

Now to be clear, this year’s list of nominees all did great jobs in their respective roles. General Hospital’s Kate Mansi had quite the transformative storyline as Kristina in 2024, first losing the surrogate child she was carrying for her sister Molly (Kristen Vaganos), then going toe-to-toe with Molly as the two women argued in grief, before they both lost their big sister Sam (Kelly Monaco).

Days of Our Lives has two actresses hoping to take home a win for supporting actress in Linsey Godfrey and Emily O’Brien. Godfrey did a heck of a job as Sarah Horton, getting run over by her mother-in-law and attempting to recuperate. O’Brien stepped into the role of Theresa Donovan at the tail end of 2023, but fully embraced the part in 2024, making for quite the joy ride as she added her own unique flavor to the dramatic soap character.

Even with such formidable competition in the category, it’s the women of The Young and the Restless who I think it all boils down to. Both Susan Walters, who portrays Diane Abbott, and Courtney Hope, who plays Sally Spectra, delivered performances that were truly standouts in 2024. And it was Hope, who I believe did just enough to edge out her competition. If we’re right about her winning this category again, it would make her a winner in back-to-back years.

I recall watching the tumultuous breakup between Sally and Adam (Mark Grossman) on The Young and the Restless, and I said then that her work on screen was gold hardware-worthy. Hope perfectly struck a balance between visibly showcasing Sally’s heartbreak and fully demonstrating the character’s rage at being betrayed and lied to. Take a look at her unleashing on Adam below (I’m still applauding).

I also have to commend Hope for how she handled Sally’s mending process. Sally realized that Adam was exactly who people warned her he was, and had to wrestle with the fact that she ended things with Nick (Joshua Morrow) for the younger Newman.

Plus, she was left trying to move on from Adam, falling into the arms of Billy (Jason Thompson). While in the present, we’re well beyond the eligibility period for the 2025 Daytime Emmys, I can’t help but desire seeing more of the fierce Sally in future episodes.

Now I’d be remiss if I didn’t bring up my theory that there’s a slight possibility the supporting actress category ends in a tie. Although we think Hope will capture the trophy, she could wind up sharing it with Walters.

Walters had some stellar moments in 2024 as Diane, whether that be unleashing on Jack (Peter Bergman) for purposefully relapsing for Nikki’s (Melody Thomas Scott) benefit, pretending to fallout with with Jack for Kyle’s (Michael Mealor) sake or having the tough conversations with Kyle as he wrestled with his past trauma, Walters’ Diane scenes were must-watch.

Unbeknownst to her, little Victoria Kiriakis has been caught in a tense battle in Days of Our Lives as Xander and Sarah fight over the precious tot. Things seem to have reached a point of no return for the once happy-ish couple. Is there a world where they could ever see eye-to-eye again?

Xander (Paul Telfer) and Sarah (Linsey Godfrey) would prefer that their daughter grow up in a loving household, but at the moment, there’s nothing but tension and derision between them, and it’s not likely to go away any time soon, or ever, for that matter.

When Sarah announced that she was going to Bermuda with her mother and planned for Victoria to come along, Xander immediately refused, believing that this was really a ploy on Sarah’s part to keep Victoria from him.

As their marriage continues to unravel, the only thing Xander wants is his daughter, and he sees no reason why she wouldn’t be able to stay with him instead of Sarah. They both work demanding jobs, with him working as the co-CEO of Titan DiMera and Sarah working as a doctor. There’s a good argument for Victoria staying with her father, even though Sarah believes the young girl should be with her mother.

In the July 16 episode, Xander had trouble trying to get Victoria to calm down, and it was Gabi (Cherie Jimenez) who stepped in and soothed her to sleep. Xander seems to know he’s in over his head trying to be a good CEO and father, but at this point, there’s no way he and Sarah will ever get back together.

Sadly, the only thing that could bring the former couple back together would be if something happened to Victoria. While morbid to think about, Victoria getting sick or being kidnapped or having some other unfortunate situation befall her would bring her parents back together again. Sarah doesn’t seem likely to forget all the things Xander has done, nor can he forget her transgressions either. But when it comes to their daughter, Xander and Sarah would do anything to make sure she’s safe and healthy, even if it meant having to work together to do it.

Paulina learns about shocking new evidence in Days of Our Lives, and it’s about to turn everything upside down. Will she pull some strings to help her daughter?

Paulina (Jackée Harry) had just delivered a motherly pep talk to Chanel (Raven Bowens) about the possibility of new evidence coming through that could clear Johnny’s (Carson Boatman) name and identify a new suspect when she received word that the memory card finally yielded exactly that…only it’s not at all what Paulina was hoping for.

Chanel has been furious at her mother for her role in arresting Johnny for EJ’s (Dan Feuerriegel) shooting. Things have calmed down a bit, especially after Paulina was able to help expedite the hearing so Johnny could go home instead of staying in jail overnight. However, Chanel is still unhappy that her mother has been prioritizing her role as mayor and her obligations as mayor, instead of being a concerned and protective mother and mother-in-law.

However, the memory card shows that Chanel was also at the DiMera mansion before EJ was shot, and she threatened him. Her arrival seems to follow Johnny’s, which would likely clear him from the crime and implicate her, as (so far) she seems to be the last one to be with EJ before he’s shot.

Paulina made sure she was at the station when Chanel arrived, and she insisted that Chanel needed a lawyer before she gave a statement to Jada (Elia Cantu). Paulina had been able to help Johnny get a speedy hearing so he could go home on bail, but since Chanel isn’t being arrested (yet), there’s not much she can do to help her daughter, aside from protecting her interests while she’s under investigation.

We know from past experiences that Paulina has been willing to do whatever it takes to protect her daughter, even when things look bleak. In this situation, it doesn’t help that Johnny’s father, who was also the victim of the shooting, is also Johnny’s lawyer. EJ wants to see his son’s name cleared, and we can imagine that he’d be willing to throw Chanel under the bus to get what he wants, even though he’d be risking immense pain for his son in doing so.

At this point, we imagine Paulina will be trying to keep Jada from arresting Chanel so that Chanel stays out of jail. She can only hope that no new evidence arrives that makes this situation any worse than it already is.

Is it weird that I’m loving Xander and Philip Kiriakis banter on Days of Our Lives? The brothers may be at odds, and Philip is fresh out of the hospital after Xander beat him within an inch of his life, but now that they’re forced to work together to protect the business, they’re giving us comedy gold.

Poor Xander (Paul Telfer, fresh off of his Daytime Emmy nomination, I might add). Ok, maybe not poor Xander. He’s a challenging guy to feel sympathy for after all he’s done, but maybe that’s why it was so funny to see him walk into work after a very trying evening to find his brother, Philip (John-Paul Lavoisier) posted up at his desk at Titan DiMera.

Philip, in the interest of keeping things at the family business moving smoothly, explained that he needed to be at work so that people are able to see the brothers working together. Not only will it build confidence, but it will (hopefully) help to make people forget about the accusations that Xander was the one who beat Philip into a bloody pulp. (Except…that’s exactly what happened, and then Philip awoke from his coma to find Xander about to smother him with a pillow, but that’s for another time)

Of course, this is the absolute worst time for Philip to have this gem of an idea, because Xander just spent the night not sleeping with Gwen (Emily O’Brien) despite really wanting to.

On that note, Philip quickly tells his grumpy brother that he signed him up for anger management classes through Titan DiMera’s human resources department. To deal with his nasty temper, obviously. Things go from bad to worse when Johnny (Carson Boatman) arrives and Philip tells Xander that they’re going to film a video statement to show everyone that they’re right as rain.

Xander wants no part of any of this. He’s already having a very bad day, and it’s gone from bad to worse as he deals with the oddly chipper Philip, who proceeds to do his prescribed yoga stretches in the middle of the office to help him heal from the beating he took. He really digs in, prodding and provoking Xander the whole time, until Johnny suggests that the first step is to make it look more convincing that they’re not going to kill each other.

Now, this whole exchange was playful for an audience that knows Xander hates Philip for staking a claim in what Xander believes is his sole birthright. Philip would rather that Xander quit outright, but if he’s to get his share of the family fortune, then they need to present a united front. And that’s where the comedy gold comes in, because the more these two brothers try to pretend they don’t hate each other, the funnier it gets, and I am absolutely here for it.

When you’re trying to be a ruthless businessman, it’s hard to have a weakness of any kind. On Days of Our Lives, EJ DiMera and Xander Kiriakis are both ruthless businessmen, and they also share the same weakness.

Powerful men don’t like having things that get in the way of their success. EJ (Dan Feurriegel) and Xander (Paul Telfer) are businessmen and rivals and at the moment they are still fighting over control of the hospital despite the board voting to give control to EJ.

But while they’re both fighting to keep control, in EJ’s case, or win control after a new vote, in Xander’s case, there is something happening behind the scenes that’s more powerful than any business transaction: their kids are at risk.

For EJ, he’s fighting to keep Johnny (Carson Boatman) from being blamed for shooting him. Sure, EJ still doesn’t know who actually pulled the trigger — and until recently he, too, thought it was his son — but now he’s dead set on making sure that Johnny doesn’t get charged for the crime. He’s now serving as his son’s attorney and you can bet EJ is going behind the scenes to talk to the judge to make sure things go exactly the way he wants. When it comes to his son, he’ll do anything.

The same can be said of Xander. After being the main suspect in Philip’s beating (and rightfully so, because he really did do it), Xander’s already tenuous relationship with Sarah (Lynsey Godfrey) took another massive hit and drove a wedge between them. Xander isn’t happy about losing Sarah, but his main concern is having access to his daughter, Victoria. In fact, he’s made it crystal clear that he’s going to do whatever it takes to keep her in his life no matter what.

At the end of the day, both EJ and Xander can be brought to their knees at the thought of losing their children. It’s something that’s noble, yes, but in their line of work it’s something that can be exploited. They’ll both have to be careful not to lose sight of their objectives as they work to keep their children safe, lest they open a whole new can of worms.

Chanel and Paulina’s relationship may have taken another turn for the worse on Days of Our Lives as Johnny is arrested for shooting EJ.

As Salem’s mayor, Paulina (Jackée Harry) knew that there was going to be a lot of scrutiny about Johnny’s (Carson Boatman) arrest, so she tried to get in front of it by instructing Jada (Elia Cantu) to arrest him instead of simply bringing him in for questioning.

Between the high-profile shooting of EJ DiMera (Dan Feurriegel) and the possibility of Johnny receiving special treatment, Paulina had to be careful.

For Chanel (Raven Bowens), though, Paulina could have prevented her husband from being arrested in the first place.

Everyone believes Johnny is innocent, Chanel tells him during their precious few moments together before he’s taken to his cell. In Chanel’s mind, it’s Paulina that they have to worry about. “Mama is the one who stabbed us in the back.”

Chanel isn’t about to forget her mother’s role in Johnny’s arrest, but Johnny points out in the July 1 episode that having the mayor as his mother-in-law is actually helpful, as Paulina was able to schedule his arraignment and bail hearing the night of his arrest so he didn’t have to be in jail overnight.

Of course, it’s another blow between Paulina and Chanel, coming just as the mother-daughter duo was starting to heal from their myriad rifts.

At the moment, though, Chanel has more pressing concerns as her husband accepts EJ’s help to defend himself. She doesn’t think having his father — and the shooting victim — defending him is a good idea, but Johnny and EJ think it’s a great idea. Now Chanel is left trying to keep her husband from going to jail while also ensuring that EJ doesn't do anything that could jeopardize that. And even if EJ is truly on their side, it means Chanel has to put up with him when that's the last thing she wants to do right now.

With everything going on, Chanel’s rift with Paulina might have to wait while she figures out how to help Johnny get out of this mess. But you can bet that if things go sideways with Johnny's trial, Chanel isn't going to forget her mother's role in it.

If a single mess can start the ball rolling toward an even larger mess, then Johnny’s current messy situation on Days of Our Lives is about to upend a lot of Salem residents’ lives.

The June 30 episode began with Johnny (Carson Boatman) being arrested and ended with Roman (Josh Taylor) turning in his gun, which he believed was the gun used to shoot EJ (Dan Feurriegel).

Of course, that’s not the only drama from the episode. Chanel (Raven Bowens) discovered what Johnny had been hiding from her, Gabi (Cherie Jimenez) realized that if she has to testify in the case then EJ will be even angrier with her and Paulina (Jackée Harry) realized that her actions may have put a strain on her relationship with Chanel.

Belle (Martha Madison) has been recused from the case but now that EJ is going to represent his son, she’s going to be in a very tough spot. Rafe (Galen Gering) is furious that Jada (Elia Cantu) took his tip and arrested Johnny instead of bringing him in for questioning while EJ, whose focus was on the new vote at the hospital, is now going to be laser focused on keeping his son out of prison.

Suddenly, it seems like all of Salem is wrapped up in this scandal anew.

Johnny’s arrest comes right after he and EJ cleared the air. Until that moment, EJ truly believed Johnny shot him and he was bound and determined to protect his son from the fallout. However, Johnny made it clear that he never pulled the trigger and instead gave the gun to EJ before he left.

The problem, of course, is that EJ still can’t remember who actually pulled the trigger. He’s been trying to protect Johnny but now he’s on the hook because he told Jada that Johnny didn’t pull the trigger despite the fact that he doesn’t even remember Johnny giving the gun to him before leaving.

With EJ’s memory still fuzzy, Johnny insisting that he didn’t pull the trigger and lots of pieces are parts of the puzzle coming in from all sides, it now seems that all of Salem is tied up in this mess with no clear picture of who actually pulled the trigger and it’s only going to get worse from here.

Pressure is mounting for EJ as he’s suddenly under more and more scrutiny on Days of Our Lives.

EJ (Dan Feuerriegel) may have recovered from being shot in the chest, but his world is getting more and more complicated as his memories of the incident continue to be muddled and pressure is mounting to find the truth about who pulled the trigger. Not only that, but Xander’s (Paul Telfer) exoneration has led to a call for another vote to determine who should take over the hospital.

After Rachel (Alice Halsey) confessed what she saw the night EJ was shot to Marlena (Deidre Hall), Marlena has been working with Roman (Josh Taylor), and now Kate (Lauren Koslow), to figure out who pulled the trigger if it wasn’t Johnny (Carson Boatman).

Johnny, who just started working at Titan-DiMera, just triggered a memory for Gabi (Cherie Jimenez), who happened to be lurking outside the DiMera mansion the night EJ was shot and overheard Johnny fighting with his father. She contacted Rafe (Galen Gering) to tell him what she remembered from the night, which implicates Johnny in the crime.

There’s also Belle (Martha Madison), who told EJ that the police are looking for the memory card from the camera planted in the house the night EJ was shot. After he leaves, he recalls removing the memory card when Johnny arrived but his mind is blank when it comes to who actually pulled the trigger.

The timing couldn’t be worse for EJ, who is trying to protect his son from being charged with attempted murder while also trying to maintain his control of the hospital. It doesn’t help that Tony (Thaao Penghlis) is in town trying to reclaim the DiMera family birthright away from the Kiriakis family.

All of a sudden there are lots of people with vested interests in determining what happened to EJ, which is the exact opposite of what he wanted. EJ is trying to keep Johnny’s name out of this whole thing but it looks like the harder he tries, the worse it gets.

Marlena and Roman are facing quite the mystery on Days of Our Lives after discovering that there’s a gun, a missing bullet and no suspect. But if Johnny didn’t pull the trigger, who did?

Though it has been weeks since EJ (Dan Feuerriegel) was shot, we still don’t know who pulled the trigger.

Rachel (Alice Halsey) has been plagued by stomach aches because she heard EJ and Johnny (Carson Boatman) arguing. She confided in her grandmother Marlena (Deidre Hall) that she saw Johnny with a gun, and now she’s supposed to keep it all a secret because her mother told her she’d never see her other grandmother again if she tells anyone what happened.

Naturally, Marlena went to Roman (Josh Taylor) for help and discovered he already suspected Johnny could be involved since the gun was missing from the bar. They confronted Johnny, who insisted he didn’t pull the trigger. He admitted to going to the DiMera mansion and confronting his father, but he’s adamant he didn’t shoot him — and that he left the gun with EJ before he left.

So how did the gun end up in the bushes outside, and why is it missing a bullet?

And who shot EJ?

EJ has a long list of people who would like nothing more than to see him dead. And EJ had a hidden camera recording everything the night he was shot; he’s protecting his son from being implicated, but it seems like he’s also hiding the truth about who killed him… unless it really was Johnny.

What’s interesting about this murder mystery is there are lots of possible red herrings… or maybe they aren’t red herrings at all. EJ must know who shot him if he has it recorded.

Rachel stands by what she saw and heard that night, and she’s been told that something terrible will happen to her grandmother if she reveals her secret.

Johnny admits he was there to shoot his father and he has the best motive of anyone: he’s there to get payback for his father raping his mother, which led to his birth.

Since Johnny’s motive to kill his father is so strong and there’s a witness to support it, we’ve no doubt that he’ll probably be implicated in some way, if not charged outright.

However, we’d love to see a vast conspiracy taking place, one where someone else happened to be in the house at the same time Johnny was there, and the stranger is the one who shot EJ on the heels of Johnny’s departure. But surely anyone staking out the house would know that Rachel was there. Did they not know the young girl was nearby, or did they simply not care?

As the evidence seems to stack up against Johnny, without some new evidence it’s possible the young man will be charged with EJ’s shooting. But that means there’s a murderer loose in Salem and no one is safe.

Tony DiMera is back in Salem on Days of Our Lives, but the charismatic count gets the cold shoulder when he proposes that the DiMera family reclaim their birthright to honor their father.

Tony is always a welcome figure in Salem, but it looks like he picked the wrong time to return home.

EJ (Dan Feuerriegel) is in the middle of a big mess as he attempts to keep people from discovering that his estranged son, Johnny (Carson Boatman), not only was in the house the night he was shot, but that Johnny had a gun and Rachel (Alice Halsey) saw the whole thing. EJ had just retrieved the memory card from the hidden camera that captured the whole thing, hoping to use it as insurance to protect his son, as Tony arrived.

Tony, realizing that his half-brother was up to something, asked to be clued in so he can help, but it’s a bigger secret than he expected.

Not only that, but Chad (Billy Flynn) was at The Bistro in the middle of a deep conversation with Gabi (Cherie Jimenez) about “his birthright.” She wants him to think about returning DiMera Enterprises to the family but Chad wants no part of it. He’s busy running The Spectator and that’s where he wants to be.

Needless to say, Tony, having arrived in Salem to bring the family together, was surprised to see that neither EJ nor Chad were willing to do anything to bring the company out from under the control of Titan Industries and the Kiriakis family.

“Yes, I broached the subject,” he tells Anna (Leann Hunley, who will be joining Penghlis once again on the canvas soon) in a phone call at the end of the episode. “It seems that neither of them want to make a move. So if the family business is to be saved, it seems I have to be the one to do it.”

With EJ and Chad distracted, Tony will likely look for allies to help him return control of DiMera Enterprises to his family. What he’ll find, however, is an uphill battle given that there aren’t many people in Salem who want to help EJ at the moment, especially not after he took control of the hospital recently.

That leaves Tony to figure out a solution on his own and that could involve trying to mend more than a few fences around town, especially the ones that EJ has torn down. In a way it’s perfect because we’ll get a chance to see the always suave and debonair Tony using all of his charm and resources to find a solution and it will be so much fun to see.

Rachel’s tummy trouble is fast becoming a problem for EJ on Days of Our Lives, so will he end up sending her away to protect his secret?

In the June 20 episode of Days, EJ (Dan Feuerriegel) discovered that Brady (Eric Martsolf) knew that Rachel (Alice Halsey) saw Johnny (Carson Boatman) shoot EJ on that fateful night. Since then, the young girl has been plagued by stomach issues, no doubt caused by the stress of her uncle’s secret eating away at her.

After getting sick ahead of the graduation ceremony, Brady took Rachel to the hospital to visit Sarah (Lynsey Godfrey) for yet another check-up. Sarah figured out that something was bothering Rachel, and it wasn’t the loss of her Grandpa John (Drake Hogestyn). Given how close Rachel was to John, Sarah quickly determined that whatever the secret is, it’s a big one. Brady assured Sarah that Rachel will continue with therapy, but that’s not the end of it.

Later, during a girl’s night sleepover with her grandmother, Rachel mumbled “No, don’t shoot him” while she was dreaming, leading Marlena (Deidre Hall) to wonder what was going on. Naturally, it won’t take much to connect the dots between Rachel’s upset stomach — a result of stress — and the fact that EJ is the only person who has been shot (recently, at least) in Salem.

This presents a massive problem for EJ, who is working to protect his son from being charged with the crime. EJ will do anything to protect Johnny, but we doubt he’d go so far as to “disappear” Rachel. Now that Brady, and eventually Marlena, know what’s going on with Rachel, it’s going to be a race against time for EJ to find a way to get Rachel away from Salem until the heat dies down.

This leads us to wonder if he’ll propose a grand summer trip for her. Whether it’s summer camp or a European getaway, or heck, even a whole summer traveling to theme parks, EJ will likely do whatever he can to get Rachel out of town before too many people start asking questions.

Like so many Days of Our Lives fans, I was glued to the TV for John Black’s funeral, Bo and Hope’s reunion and the 40th anniversary celebration of Stephen Nichols’ time on the canvas. I’m left thinking about the show’s history and the flashbacks are an absolute treasure trove.

I grew up watching soap operas in an adjacent way, like so many kids before me, because my mother was watching them and I was present for it. I can vividly remember my mother getting me ready for preschool, fixing my pigtails (with brightly colored bows, of course) while talking on the phone (a landline with a 25-foot cord that could nearly travel through the whole house) with my friends’ mothers. Each day they would discuss the day’s soaps and what was going on.

At that moment in time as a young child, their conversations were going over my head and I had no idea what I was watching but there was a lot of kissing and crying from what I remember. I wish, in retrospect, that I’d been paying closer attention.

I started watching Days a few years ago and relied on anecdotal stories from friends about things that happened decades ago. Yes, I could find clips online and read summaries of characters’ family trees and storylines, but seeing it…well, that’s a whole other story.

The past few weeks have been a treasure trove of Days' history between the celebration of John Black’s (Drake Hogestyn) life, Bo (Peter Reckell) and Hope’s (Kristian Alfonso) relationship and Nichols’ time on the show. Seeing how “Patch” ended up with the trademark patch over his eye, and hearing how it was Bo who played a role in the incident that led to the injury, was so valuable.

For those who haven’t been watching for years (or decades), these snippets from the past are so valuable mainly because there really aren’t any ways to revisit them. With only two seasons available to stream, there’s no place for fans to travel back in time in the annals of Days past until there’s another opportunity to share clips in a current episode.

All I know is that I was hooked on those little blasts from the past. From the big hair of the 1980s to white-water rafting adventures to fights on hillsides and thrilling supernatural adventures, Days of years past was a sight to behold and I would love to see more of it, especially because I could go back and figure out what had my mom and her friends talking back in the day.

It’s not often that we get to see our favorite soap opera characters going through the long laundry lists of people with whom they have shared relations in the past, so it’s fun when it happens and we can see the characters themselves cringe (even if it’s just a little bit) when confronted by the magnitude of their amorous endeavors. We had one such moment in the May 28 episode of Days of Our Lives in a conversation between EJ (Dan Feuerriegel) and Kristen (Stacy Haiduk).

After learning that John Black (Drake Hogestyn) had been in a terrible accident and wasn’t expected to survive, Kristen was left speechless, and EJ tried, awkwardly, to console her.

When Kristen admits that John was the first man she ever loved, EJ points out that she was willing to do anything — including passing him off as her child. Kristen sighs, reminding him, “I wasn’t in my right mind, obviously.”

Kristen goes on to say that she was blinded by her feelings for John. “Feelings that you subsequently transferred onto his son, which isn’t creepy at all, Kristen,” EJ replies drily.

Their conversation continued thusly:

“Oh come on, are you calling me creepy right now?” the exasperated sibling retorts. “I mean, look who’s talking. I mean, you what, are sleeping with your ex-wife’s sister?”

“Again,” EJ agrees.

“Again, yes,” Kristen says. “And as I recall, you were with Kate Roberts at some point, and later with her daughter, Billie.”

“All right, point taken,” EJ admits.

Kristen sighs again. “I guess us DiMeras are a bit twisted in our own way.”

As a relative newcomer to soaps (I’ve been knee-deep in soaps for two years now), hearing how many characters have been romantically involved with each other at one time or another never ceases to amaze me.

This is one of the rare moments when the characters themselves try to piece together their own romantic interludes and have to reckon with their life choices.

For EJ, who is trying (to the best of his morally grey ability) to be a new man, he’s not ashamed of his choices, but he’s clearly looking at the world through a new lens. That said, we don’t get the sense that patterns won’t repeat with him in the future, because they always do. Kristen freely admits she’d do anything for love, and we’re not entirely sure she wouldn’t do it again if the opportunity presented itself.

You’d be hard pressed to find characters on a long-running soap opera like Days of Our Lives who haven’t had their fair share of relationships and entanglements over the years. That said, I hope EJ and Kristen keep up their “twisted” DiMera way because that’s what makes watching them so much fun!
