After exploring the cultural treasures of Venice, Florence and Rome in their BAFTA-winning Grand Tour of Italy last year, Rob Rinder and Rylan Clark jumped at the chance of embarking on another odyssey for BBC2.

Rob and Rylan’s Passage to India, inspired by EM Forster’s 1924 novel, begins in Delhi, where the bustling capital’s diverse and vibrant art scene soon leads them towards a whole world of different experiences.

Speaking about his new show, Rylan told us: "Grand Tour was about following in the footsteps of [Romantic poet] Lord Byron – Rob’s a big fan of Byron’s work, so we wanted to keep that theme going and another of his literary heroes is EM Forster, so A Passage to India just made sense. I’ve still not read the book – and until about halfway through Delhi, I thought his name was ‘Ian’, not ‘EM’!"

Netflix has added Love Con Revenge, a new documentary following former-relationship fraud victim Cecilie Fjellhøy, whose story was told in the streamer's megahit The Tinder Swindler.

Cecile teams up with private investigator Brianne Joseph as they embark on a mission to unmask romance scammers and take back control. Romance fraud sees criminals use fake profiles to make someone fall in love with them before stealing their money. It's an unfortunate side effect of the explosion of dating apps.

She told Netflix: "I never imagined my personal story would resonate the way it has.

"Since The Tinder Swindler, I've heard from people all over the world who've been targeted by criminals hiding behind love. Love Con Revenge is a way for me to use what I've learned to help others heal, reclaim their voices, their power, and their lives."

She declares in the trailer: "These scammers have been getting away with this for way too long."

Series creative director James O'Reilly adds: "Love Con Revenge uncovers the jaw-dropping scale of romance fraud — and the emotional and financial toll it takes on victims.

"This is a truly modern crime that is exploding in the United States and around the world. It's been incredible to follow Cecilie and Brianne as they investigate these cases — to bring justice to the victims, and hold the perpetrators to account who've gotten away with this for far too long."

Since The Tinder Swindler went out in 2022, Cecile, who lives in London, has spoken out to warn others of the dangers of fraudsters.

Earlier in the year, at a film festival, I watched what's probably going to end up being the best Netflix documentary of the year, and while it didn't have a release date at the time, the streamer has finally let us known when it'll release the movie.

The doc I'm talking about is called The Perfect Neighbor, and after playing at several film fests (including Sundance where it premiered and Sheffield DocFest where I saw it) it's set to release on Netflix on Friday, October 17. After those initial screenings it sits at a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes with over 30 positive reviews.

The Perfect Neighbor is about the growing tensions in a small Florida neighborhood, blossoming out from one resident who constantly complains to the police about the other. The dispute escalates until someone's dead and another is doing their best to get off from the crime scot-free.

While that could describe your generic Netflix true crime docuseries, what makes The Perfect Neighbor stand out is that almost all of the story is constructed from police bodycam footage taken during the various complaint call-outs and investigations. We can directly see how the players acted during the events, and judge them for ourselves without having to rely on any talking heads telling us how to feel.

The experience is also strangely gripping and visceral, putting us in on the action while also giving us the benefit of hindsight to know how it'll play out. This certainly isn't a doc you should watch while scrolling your phone; it's one to pay attention to.

I will say that one downside of this is that bodycam audio can be really hard to make out — I couldn't make out whole sentences during my screening, so I'd recommend you make the most of Netflix's subtitles feature to ensure you don't miss anything.

Like the true story it portrays, The Perfect Neighbor touches on the important topic of stand-your-ground laws, as beyond the events it looks at the consequences of the killing and court trial. I'd recommend avoiding looking into the story behind the case for fear of spoilers, which is why I haven't named the people involved despite it being public record.

The movie is a harder-hitting release than we usually see from Netflix but that's why you should watch it!

Martin Scorsese was apparently considering taking a page from Travis Bickle’s playbook in order to save Taxi Driver (one of WTW's 100 best movies of all time)from being scrapped by the studio. That’s the fascinating takeaway from the first look at Mr. Scorsese, a five-part documentary series about the legendary Oscar-winning director premiering on Apple TV Plus on October 17.

In the clip, we see Steven Spielberg and Scorsese talking about the frantic state that Scorsese was in when the studio demanded that Scorsese remove much of the violent climax of the movie when Bickle (played by Robert De Niro) shoots up a brothel. Spielberg said that Scorsese was “very upset” and called him in a panic over the situation, while another interviewee said there were stories Scorsese wanted to kill the head of the studio.

It’s important to remember at the time that Scorsese was still a young director. While he had made well regarded movies like Mean Streets and Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Scorsese was not the revered figure that movie fans know him as today; one who gets Emmy-nominated cameos in The Studio. So these suggested cuts weren’t things that could just be ignored because he’s Martin Scorsese. But would Scorsese have resorted to violence or criminal acts to try and save Taxi Driver?

As he tells it, he was in such a state that he at least threatened it.

In the clip, Scorsese was asked if he had a gun during this situation? He says that “I was going to get one,” but he quickly admits that he was unlikely to actually ever get one. He says “I was angry, I said I’m going to threaten them, or maybe just shoot. I had no idea. I mean I was threatening.”

So the gun was an empty threat, but as Scorsese elaborates he did have a plan to steal the rough cut of Taxi Driver from the studio. “They’re going to destroy the film anyway,” he explained, “so let me destroy it. I’ll destroy it. But before destroying it I’m going to steal it.”

However, as we know Taxi Driver was not destroyed. Instead, a workaround was reached that allowed for Scorsese to keep the shootout scene mostly intact. While Spielberg doesn’t remember exactly who had the idea, but says it may have been Scorsese, the plan was to tone the color down of the entire sequence, from red to a brownish color, and “make it grainy,” This was enough to get the seal of approval from the MPAA and the studio, and, as Spielberg says “saved the movie.”

Few movies have freaked yours truly out quite like The Silence of the Lambs—in case you somehow missed it these past four decades, the 1991 Jonathan Demme-directed horror classic stars a spine-chilling Anthony Hopkins as the captured cannibalistic murderer Hannibal Lecter, whose homicidal insights are sought out by young FBI trainee Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster) to help hunt down a serial killer known as "Buffalo Bill" (Ted Levine). While the psychological thriller is filled with terrifying scenes, none are quite as hair-raising as the one-on-one interrogations between Starling and Lecter, with the former bravely trying to get inside the mind of a monster.

And the only thing scarier than fiction is real life. At the center of Hulu's new true-crime docuseries Ted Bundy: Dialogue with the Devil is a very The Silence of the Lambs-esque premise: A series of conversations between the notorious American serial killer Ted Bundy and investigator Robert Keppel that took place while the murderer was serving on death row in Florida from 1984 to 1989, in the hopes of catching the Green River Killer, a phantom who murdered 49 women in the same Seattle area where Bundy claimed many of his victims a decade earlier.

Bundy's own crimes have been heavily documented over the decades, from Netflix's Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes to HBO Max's Ted Bundy: Mind of a Monster to Prime Video's Ted Bundy: Falling for a Killer. But the new six-part Hulu doc, which premiered on August 7, has a unique perspective in that it contextualizes Bundy's horrific actions and uses his twisted expertise to delve deeper into serial killer psychology as a whole.

And just like in Demme's drama, it's those unsettling direct conversations between the killer and the detective that provide the real horror, with their cat-and-mouse talks playing out until Bundy's execution in January 1989.

The interest around John F. Kennedy Jr. certainly haven't ebbed in the nearly three decades since his untimely death. An American attorney and magazine publisher, the man affectionately called "John-John" is best known worldwide as the son of former U.S. President John F. Kennedy (who himself died tragically, being assassinated when Jr. was just three years old) and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. And a new three-part CNN docuseries will certainly stir up even more intrigue around the late American icon.

Premiering tonight, August 9 at 9pm Eastern Time on CNN, American Prince: JFK Jr. traces "the remarkable life and enduring legacy of John F. Kennedy Jr." across three episodes. (After tonight's premiere episode, the subsequent installments will follow on August 16 at 9pp and August 23 at 9pm.)

"American Prince: JFK Jr. traces his early years marked by his father’s assassination and the societal and familial pressures to carry the Kennedy torch, through his decision to create George, a new kind of political magazine within the rapidly evolving media landscape of the 90s," reads the series' official description, per CNN. "It also explores the dynamic love story he shared with Carolyn Bessette, which was relentlessly targeted by media attention," as well as the couple's tragic passing in a plane crash in July 1999.

The multi-part doc features a mix of archival footage and fresh interviews with family members, close friends and collaborators—including Carole Radziwill, Gary Ginsberg, Hamilton South, Steve Gillon, Cindy Crawford, Robert De Niro and Graydon Carter—to "peel back the layers of one of America’s most iconic and beloved figures," per CNN.

To tune into the premiere of American Prince: JFK Jr. tonight at 9pm, all well as the following two installments, you're going to need access to CNN. Netflix has added Stolen: Heist of the Century, an intriguing-sounding documentary about arguably the world's most audacious diamond robbery, which seems like something out of Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible movies.

In February 2003, a gang of thieves broke into the seemingly impenetrable Antwerp World Diamond Centre and snatched gems estimated to be worth between $100 million and $500 million. The police were baffled by how the villains got into the vault, which had every protection imaginable, including thermal-motion sensors, a magnetic field, and a lock with millions of possible combinations. The crooks didn't set off any alarms, and their crime wasn't discovered until the following day.

And, amazingly, most of the diamonds have still never been found!

The methods by which the thieves pulled off the breathtaking heist and the current whereabouts of the diamonds are still the subject of great debate.

Netflix teases: “An ingenious gang of master jewel thieves from Italy known as The School of Turin were behind the audacious heist — now, after more than 20 years, the world will finally learn how they pulled it off."

In the trailer (above), someone involved with the case is heard saying: "No one could imagine that the diamond district could be cracked. This isn't the story of a crime. It's more like the script of a movie.

"How they did it with no force, no violence, we had no idea."

The makers have interviewed the Antwerp detectives who cracked the case and also the alleged criminal mastermind behind it. Netflix says it will give a "blow-by-blow account of what really happened”.

It’s from the producers of The Tinder Swindler and American Nightmare, so it suggests it will be a great production.

We know the crime required a lot of planning and a string of ingenious methods to evade the huge security around the diamonds. What happened afterwards is just as interesting as the heist, as the criminals went about trying to profit from their crime while the police played catch-up and started to gather evidence.

Netflix will be hoping it matches the huge success of the Guy Ritchie true crime documentary The Diamond Heist, which became a global smash on the streaming service earlier this year.

The three-part documentary, which easily makes our best shows on Netflix guide, is about the attempted theft of £350 million worth of diamonds, including the famous Millennium Star, from London's Millennium Dome back in 2000.

After Welcome to Wrexham fired people's imaginations, we've seen a few other celebrity takeovers of storied soccer / football clubs, and the latest one is a spin-off of that original show in the form of Necaxa.

Necaxa premieres on Thursday, August 7 and it focuses on Club Necaxa, playing in Mexico's Liga MX, which in 2021 was half-bought by foreign investors. According to show makers the club has been down on its luck for decades, though it does play in Mexico's top league.

The series puts Desperate Housewives actress Eva Longoria into the manager's seat as she attempts to change the fate of the club. She's joined by Wrexham's Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac for at least some of the journey, judging by press pictures and their being credited as executive producers.

So here's how to watch Necaxa, ready for when it comes out.

How to watch Necaxa in the US

You can watch Necaxa on either cable or streaming in the US.

The cable option is the one that'll let you see the show straight away, and by that I mean, 'on release date'. Three episodes will air on FXX at 9 pm ET/PT on Thursday, July 7, and new ones will take that time spot on the channel at a rate of one per week for another four weeks.

Don't have a way to watch FXX on your current cable plan? Several live TV streaming services offer it including DirecTV, Hulu with Live TV and Fubo.

Your other option is the standalone streaming service Hulu, which costs $9.99 monthly for its basic tier or $18.99 for its ad-free one.

Hulu will get all episodes of Necaxa the day after they air on FXX. That means the first three on Friday, July 8, and new ones every Friday until all seven are out.

How to watch Necaxa in the UK

There's only one way to watch Necaxa in the UK, and that's by using the streaming service Disney Plus.

Disney Plus costs £4.99 per month for a subscription but that'll make you watch adverts. £7.99 monthly gets rid of those.

Episodes of Necaxa will land the day after they air on TV in the US. That means the first three will premiere on Friday, August 8, and new ones will roll out weekly after that.

How to watch Necaxa in Australia

Watching Necaxa in Australia is done via Disney Plus, just like in the UK. The release schedule is the same: episodes every Friday after a three-episode premiere on Friday, August 8.

Without a doubt, Ryan Coolger has become one of my favorite storytellers of the last 20 years. From Fruitvale Station to Black Panther to Creed to the recent cinematic triumph Sinners, Coogler has a knack for developing stories that always keep me entertained and glued to a screen.

That’s why I shouldn’t be surprised that his follow-up to Sinners has truly captured my attention, and it’s just as haunting, but for a completely different reason. I’m talking about Hurricane Katrina: Race Against Time, the new National Geographic docuseries now streaming on Hulu and Disney Plus, for which Coogler is an executive producer.

As suggested by the title, Hurricane Katrina: Race Against Time takes a look back at 2005’s Hurricane Katrina, one of the most catastrophic natural disasters to hit the US, leading to 1,833 fatalities and approximately $108 billion in damage, according to the National Weather Service. Here is a synopsis of the documentary:

“Hurricane Katrina was a natural disaster, but the unprecedented tragedy that unfolded in her aftermath was man-made – laying bare America’s deep, structural, racial divisions. What initially seemed an ‘equal opportunities’ catastrophe that cared not for color or creed was, in reality, anything but. In the two weeks that followed Katrina’s landfall, as millions of predominantly Black lives in the Gulf Coast were ruined and ended, Katrina confirmed what every person of color already knew: America doesn’t care about Black People.”

I can recall going into my senior year in high school during the summer when Hurricane Katrina hit, and watching the destruction of the storm on news outlets. I felt nothing short of compassion and empathy for the victims then, and that sentiment returns watching the documentary; especially, with every interviewee who pops on the screen to describe their harrowing tale of survival.

Speaking of the interviewees, I was completely enthralled hearing their perspectives outside of news soundbites. Without giving away too much, it was interesting to hear from experts about how unprepared the city of New Orleans was before the storm hit, intriguing to listen to residents talk about the struggle of getting out of the city and compelling to be reminded about the true inequity of Hurricane Katrina.

On a final note, while Coogler is an executive producer on Hurricane Katrina: Race Against Time, Traci Curry directed the documentary. The Academy Award nominee received her nod for Attica, and she did an exceptional job with the new docuseries.

Parenthood explores the obstacles and rewards faced by a range of animals as they try to ensure the survival of the next generation.

The wildlife documentary, narrated by Sir David Attenborough and airing on BBC One in August, showcases the incredible ways in which creatures across the globe demonstrate dedication and resourcefulness as they try to ensure that their young are nourished and protected from predators.

“Parenthood is a journey like no other. While a gorilla in Gabon educates her baby about forest life, a lion in Botswana and her cubs hunt dangerous Cape Buffalo, a hippo tries to protect her calf from lions as they search for food, a burrowing owl couple in the USA work together to raise their chicks, an endangered Iberian lynx raises her kittens in an abandoned barn in Spain, and an African social spider in Namibia sacrifices herself for her spiderlings.

Episode Two: Oceans

Marine parents cleverly utilise ocean resources and as dolphin mothers in the Red Sea show their calves the reef’s healing powers, Killer whales in Australia teach their young to catch blue whales, and a Banggai cardinalfish in Indonesia rears his babies inside his mouth. But otter kits in Scotland and Cape gannet fledglings in South Africa come under threat.

Episode Three: Grasslands

Grassy regions are good hunting ground for predators and in Kenya, a cheetah and her cubs track wildebeest. Elsewhere, langur monkeys in India get babysitting practice, but tragedy strikes in South Africa when a social weaver bird’s nest causes conflict, and in Argentina, a guanaco mother faces difficulties while travelling to winter feeding grounds.

Episode Four: Freshwater

During the drought in Kenya, an elephant family awaits the arrival of rain, but a deluge could prove devastating. Meanwhile turtles in Brazil time their egg-laying to negotiate the rainy season, in Dominica a tri-tri goby fish’s child-rearing plans are upset by a storm, and in Namibia, a Namaqua sandgrouse father encounters danger as he collects water.

Episode Five: Jungles

The jungle is a rich but risky environment in which to raise young and white-headed langurs in China find their limestone habitats encroached on by farmland. Meanwhile in Bhutan, rufous-necked hornbill parents prove a well-honed team, a crab in Jamaica uses the forest’s resources to build a nursery pool, and tapirs in the Amazon relocate due to forest fires.

Parenthood – Q&A with producer and director Jeff Wilson

The first series that convinced me to pick up an Apple TV Plus free trial and test out the streamer back in 2022 wasn't actually a drama but a docuseries, and in a surprising move, the streamer has announced the return of this show: Prehistoric Planet is coming back.

Prehistoric Planet ran on Apple TV Plus for two seasons, one in 2022 and another in 2023, and it was a dinosaur nature show made with cutting-edge technology and narrated by Sir David Attenborough. It sits comfortably on our list of the best Apple TV Plus shows due to its fantastic visuals which put the new Walking with Dinosaurs to shame.

Over two and a half years from the final batch of episodes, long after fans thought the show was done, we've learned that Prehistoric Planet: Ice Age will be coming later in the year.

This new five-part series, part spin-off and part continuation, is set to release on Wednesday, November 26, and it puts Marvel and The Night Manager actor Tom Hiddleston behind the microphone.

As you can tell from the title, this docuseries looks at creatures which roamed the world millions of years after the dinosaurs, seemingly during the Younger Dryas period although Apple hasn't actually stated a time scale just yet.

We do know some of the creatures we'll see though. In the image above you can see some rock-climbing sloths and we'll also see the likes of saber-toothed tigers, scimitar cats, woolly rhinos, glyptotherium, woolly mammoths and dwarf elephants. The episodes will deal with how these creatures struggled to survive in the stark landscapes of the time and then how they tried (and sometimes failed) to adapt when the world warmed back up.

Like with the well-received first two seasons, Prehistoric Planet: Ice Age was made by the BBC Studios Natural History Unit, which makes plenty of the most popular nature docs around, and was scored by Hans Zimmer.

Apple TV Plus has begun to embrace spin-offs to its shows, and Ice Age probably counts as one of these (not that I'm complaining, I asked for this over a year ago!). But however you define it, it's great to see one of Apple TV Plus' best series, and by far its best docuseries, getting a comeback.

As soon as it arrived, it's gone: Shark Week 2025 kicked off with a full night of fin-tastic programming on Discovery Channel this past Sunday and tonight, Saturday 26, is the big, toothy finale to the 37th annual television event, with the premiere of the documentary special Attack of the Devil Shark at 8 pm Eastern Time.

"A rogue tiger shark kills two people in the Caribbean, sparking fear that it’s the legendary Devil Shark," a massive tiger shark known as Jabwei that has haunted their shores for decades, reads the official logline of the new wildlife special. "A team tracks the shark behind the attacks and uncovers a seismic force driving sharks to aggression in these waters."

Shark expert Kinga Philipps, who became the first solo woman host of a Shark Week program back in 2020 with Tiger Queen, told Assignment X that she takes offense with the doc's narration calling the legendary tiger shark "evil" and full of "hate": “I have qualms about that. I don’t love that language,” she told the outlet. However, she also praised Discovery's overall shark-related programming and Attack of the Devil Shark as "such a fun show."

“Discovery is great in the sense that some of our shows are entertainment. They’re fun, they’re drama, we’re creating a scenario. And then some are pure education," Philipps said. "Attack of the Devil Shark, as dramatic as the title is, and as dramatic as the intro is, it’s still such a fun show, and at the end of the day, we are working with scientists, we are conservationists, we are getting samples of these sharks.

To watch tonight's premiere of Attack of the Devil Shark, you're going to need access to the Discovery Channel. Netflix has offered a first glimpse of Stolen: Heist of the Century, its exciting new true crime documentary coming in August about the world's largest ever diamond robbery.

It's about the 2003 theft in Antwerp's infamous Diamond Square, where night-time robbers brazenly stole between 100 million and half a billion dollars' worth of diamonds in the Belgian city from a vault that was thought to be impregnable. Amazingly, most of the diamonds have never been found, and it's a crime that sparks many different theories to this day.

Netflix teases: “An ingenious gang of master jewel thieves from Italy known as The School of Turin were behind the audacious heist — now, after more than 20 years, the world will finally learn how they pulled it off."

The trailer, just released (below), hears someone involved with the case saying: "No one could imagine that the diamond district could be cracked. This isn't the story of a crime. It's more like the script of a movie.

"How they did it with no force, no violence, we had no idea."

Intriguingly, the makers have not only interviewed the Antwerp detectives who cracked the case but also the alleged criminal mastermind behind it. The makers promise they will give a "blow-by-blow account of what really happened”.

It’s from the producers of The Tinder Swindler and American Nightmare, so it’s certainly likely to attract plenty of interest.

Netflix will be hoping it matches the huge success of the Guy Ritchie true crime documentary The Diamond Heist, which became a global smash on the streaming service earlier this year.

The three-part documentary, which easily makes our best shows on Netflix guide, is about the attempted theft of £350 million worth of diamonds, including the famous Millennium Star, from London's Millennium Dome back in 2000.

If you've not seen it, it's well worth a watch. It's breezy and very entertaining.

Stolen: Heist of the Century will be released on Netflix globally on August 8.

Netflix has added Critical: Between Life and Death, a six-part documentary series following London's trauma units as they treat the most severely injured people.

The makers, for three weeks, used 40 cameras to follow the entire London Major Major Trauma System.

Netflix says: "In London, a major trauma happens every 60 minutes, and for the NHS, each call is a race against time."

One of the emergencies featured happened last summer when four people were injured in a funfair-ride accident. After couple Alison and Nick took their seats on a ride, Alison's sister Claire watched in horror as the attraction suffered a catastrophic mechanical failure.

"I saw heads and bodies bashing into the railings, like crash-test dummies," she recalls. "The whole of the side of Nick's face was open — just this big hole."

Alison was taken to nearby King's College Hospital in Camberwell, while Nick was admitted to St George's in Tooting, so each could be treated by a dedicated team.

“Alison had rib fractures that had ruptured her lung, so she couldn’t breathe properly,” explains Dr Lalarukh Asim, an emergency-medicine and major-trauma consultant at King's. “We had to pierce the lining of the chest cavity and insert a tube.”

The cameras follow what happens next in the dramatic episode. Dr Asim says, “People come here in crisis. So to be able to make a difference is what drives me, and I hope people watching all appreciate the amazing work done in the NHS."

Netflix adds: “The documentary series goes over the shoulder and under the scapel to reveal not only the life-saving interventions but also the personal, emotional, and sometimes traumatic reasons that inspire those on the NHS frontline to do a job where every second counts.”

Is  Critical: Between Life and Death worth a watch?

Yes, we know it's from the makers of the award-winning 24 Hours in A&E, which means it should be a quality production. It also has exclusive access to the London trauma system, meaning you will get a unique insight into how people are treated.

It also promises to explore how the doctors and nurses themselves cope emotionally with everything thrown at them.

If there's one thing that modern Netflix documentaries mostly lack, it's depth or analysis, but that wasn't the case in the early days of Netflix Originals when the streaming was still proving itself. That's a long way of saying "happy birthday, Dark Tourist, we miss you".

Dark Tourist, still available on Netflix now, was a docuseries released on Friday, July 20, 2018, so it just celebrated its eighth birthday. And though we've seen plenty of documentaries from Netflix since then, I'm still waiting for one as interesting or unique as it was.

If you don't know the phrase "dark tourism", it's in essence the idea of holidaying in places strongly associated with death; think battlefields or memorials. Those are tame examples, but Dark Tourism is looking for something a little more potent.

The series is hosted by Kiwi journalist David Farrier, and in each episode, he travels to a dark tourism hotspot to experience the culture and speak to other tourists on what drives them to the area.

Across the eight-part run, he goes on a Jeffrey Dahmer tour, visits the scene of the Fukushima nuclear disaster, experiences a voodoo rite and tries to sneak into various restricted areas.

To sell it to you in one comparison, Dark Tourist is Louis Theroux's Weird Weekends for the modern day (well, the pre-Covid day). Farrier is a great presenter in that he's willing to put himself in risky situations to tell a great story, yet knows when to pull back and let his subjects speak for themselves. Lots of the areas visited in the series are ones you've likely never heard of, with Farrier seemingly staying as far off the beaten track as possible.

Back when the series came out, I interviewed Farrier and he told me "our intent was the show was to go to these places where something horrific might have happened, poke some of the ethical issues, and then focus on the humanity around the sidelines".

It was a fantastic show, so why was there never a second season? Farrier answered that himself in a 2021 blog post in which he seemingly pointed the finger at the Covid-19 pandemic for blinking out hopes for a second season, although he did share what he was hoping to show.

Covid was a turning point for Netflix, with the increased screen time that comes from isolation coinciding (or forcing) a major sea change for the streamer's output.

Eight years on from the release of Dark Tourist, I don't see the streamer releasing another similar show, as it instead churns out frustratingly vapid docs or hyper-sensationalized series. And it's a shame, because Netflix viewers could handle better, as shown by the scant high-quality releases still broadcast on the platform. People will always want intelligent stories; as Farrier himself said in the aforementioned interview, talking about the appeal of dark tourism: "I think increasingly a lot of people want to be surprised and not just laze by a pool reading a book when they visit a new place.".

If you've already seen and enjoyed Dark Tourist, may I also recommend the book "Visit Sunny Chernobyl", a 2012 non-fiction which you can find on Amazon US here and Amazon UK here. It focuses on environmental and ecological dark tourism rather than mortality-centric places but it covers a lot of the same ground in a different way.

Netflix has added Trainwreck: P.I. Moms, a new documentary about how a planned reality show about a private investigation agency staffed by soccer mums ended in scandal.

In 2010, Lifetime Channel commissioned a reality show about the San Francisco-based agency, which seemed like a real-life version of Charlie’s Angels run by a man called Chris Butler.

For his company Butler & Associates, charismatic former cop Chris had his team of female private eyes mounting undercover surveillance and running sting operations against husbands suspected of cheating. They'd also conduct general investigations like looking into insurance scams.

Chris even turned up on the Dr. Phil show. When asked on the show about why he picked soccer moms, he said (quotes via CBS): "...they come into this field prepped for the type of work that they're gonna be encountering...they're very good listeners. Adding: "They're probably more sensitive to people lying to them."

Not surprisingly, everyone believed a reality show about the soccer mums turned private investigators would be a big hit; however, the production team then started noticing something wasn’t quite right.

As Netflix puts it: “The moms’ investigations keep falling apart, leading to allegations of sabotage. At the same time, a mysterious informant accuses the agency's boss of running an illegal drug operation on the side, abetted by a corrupt cop.

“For both the TV series and the criminals dealing drugs, it is only a matter of time before things fall disastrously apart.”

The reality show never aired as the producers of the show and journalists got to the truth about what was really going on. It's not clear from the trailer for the documentary which of the mums who took part in the reality show are interviewed. But it is clear that some of the production team are interviewed in the documentary.

It's the latest in a string of Trainwreck documentaries added to Netflix that prove life can often be stranger than fiction. Personally, I especially loved the Poop Cruise episode about how a fun-sounding cruise turned very smelly when the ship's toilets stopped working.

Is Trainwreck: PI Moms worth a watch?

Yes, we 100% reckon you should give P.I. Moms a watch. Part of the appeal of this will be seeing how the whole thing unravelled. The Trainwreck franchise has proved time and time again it can produce enthralling documentaries. If you've looked at the Netflix Top 10 shows list much in recent times, you'll keep seeing Trainwreck documentaries in the Top 10.

Probably the biggest of the bunch has been the Poop Cruise, which hit the number one slot on both sides of the Atlantic.

It's that time of year again, fin fans: Shark Week is back. The 37th annual installment of jaw-snapping, air-breaching fun returns to the Discovery Channel beginning tonight, July 20th for seven nights of shark-related programming. And to kick things off, the wildlife-loving network is premiering three brand-new shark specials this evening starting at 8pm Eastern Time.

The first of the trio is Dancing With Sharks, hosted by Emmy-winning Dancing With the Stars emcee Tom Bergeron—described as an "unprecedented underwater dance competition," the show sees five expert divers use bait and choreography to interact with sharks, including hammerheads and tiger sharks.
"Each routine is unique, with signature underwater moves; a winner will be crowned, but can all the competitors make it that far?" reads the special's official logline.

"Needless to say, no one had ever come up with this topic before," Bergeron tells USA TODAY. "But it tickled me. And it also incorporates something we should've tried in my 15 years hosting 'Dancing With the Stars'; bringing in another species."

After Dancing With Sharks, Discovery will premiere Air Jaws: The Hunt for Colossus at 9pm Eastern Time. After a 20-foot great white breaches in New Zealand, a hunt launches for "Colossus," the legendary high-flying shark that may lead to a hidden colony of great whites.

And rounding things out at 10pm is Great White Assassins, which sees shark biologist Alison Towner and marine conservationist Dickie Chivell investigate how killer whales hunt great whites, with Dickie diving disguised as an orca in New Zealand.

We've seen the real-life devastation that wildfires can bring, most recently in Southern California earlier this year. And tonight, Lifetime dramatizes the destructive impact of such a natural disaster in the channel's newest title, Faith in the Flames: The Nichole Jolly Story, premiering tonight, July 19 at 8pm Eastern Time.

Led by This is Us alum Chrissy Metz, Faith in the Flames: The Nichole Jolly Story is based on the true story of the devastating 2018 fire that ripped through Paradise, California. Metz portrays the titular talented nurse, "who begins her day as usual, only to face an unimaginable crisis when a wildfire rapidly engulfs the town."

“Torn between her duty to protect her patients and her desperate need to find her husband Nick, (Colin Moss) and children, Nichole discovers an unyielding strength within herself to save not only her family but countless residents from the encroaching flames," reads the official logline of the harrowing new drama, per Lifetime. “The film is a tribute to the indomitable human spirit and the unsung heroes who emerge in the face of tragedy.”

To tune into the premiere of Faith in the Flames: The Nichole Jolly Story tonight at 8pm, you're going to need access to the Lifetime network. Those with cable packages can watch on their local Lifetime channel, but even if you don't have traditional cable, cord-cutters can also tune in online with a live TV streaming service that carries Lifetime, such as Frndly TV, Fubo, Hulu with Live TV, Sling TV and Philo TV. Faith in the Flames: The Nichole Jolly Story is the first in a four-film series that features women “finding resilience through their faith despite harrowing circumstances,” per the network. As a big Billy Joel fan, I was excited when I had plans to finally see the Piano Man in concert in September this year. Unfortunately those plans had to be scrapped as Joel announced he was cancelling all upcoming touring dates as he recovers from a brain disorder announced in May. That just makes me more excited for the new Billy Joel documentary, Billy Joel: And So It Goes, that premieres on HBO and streams on HBO Max tonight, July 18, at 8 pm ET/PT.

A two-part documentary (part two premieres Friday, July 25), Billy Joel: And So It Goes features in-depth, exclusive interviews with Joel, illuminating the key moments that forged his character and music for more than six decades. The official synopsis reads:

“Exploring revelatory new territory and enriched by dynamic video and performance clips from Joel’s musical oeuvre, many never before seen, the documentary gives a window into his process and chronicles his monumental successes, while diving into the hidden complexities of his life.

"From his childhood on Long Island, shaped by the absence of his father, to his first bands, the women he loved, and the colleagues and collaborators who both supported and betrayed him, Joel’s decades of songwriting mirror his rich, complicated autobiography. In addition to interviews with Joel, the documentary features interviews with Joel’s former collaborator Jon Small, ex-wife and former manager Elizabeth Weber, ex-wives Christine Brinkley and Katie Lee, daughter Alexa Ray Joel, wife Alexis Roderick Joel, members of his band and fellow music legends, including Bruce Springsteen, Sting, John Mellencamp, Nas, Pink, Garth Brooks, Paul McCartney and more.

Billy Joel: And So It Goes is directed by Emmy-winning documentary filmmaker Susan Lacy, who previously profiled Jane Fonda (Jane Fonda in Five Acts) and Steven Spielberg (Spielberg), and Jessica Levin, who produced Jane Fonda in Five Acts and The Janes.

Netflix has added Trainwreck: Balloon Boy, a new documentary about how a flying saucer emergency gripped America.

In October 2009, Colorado emergency services received a frantic 911 call from local man Richard Heene, who claimed that his homemade flying saucer had escaped from his backyard with his six-year-old son Falcon inside.

In the trailer, we see news reports showing the UFO flying. With National Guard helicopters in pursuit, millions watched on TV as the helium-filled balloon drifted for 90 minutes before coming down near Denver International Airport, which was shut down during the incident.

But Falcon was not inside, and an object had been seen falling from the balloon during its flight. A desperate search began with authorities fearing for his safety, only for Falcon to be found hiding in the attic at his family home.

Rumors of a hoax began to circulate when it was revealed that Jeene and his wife, Mayumi, had been pitching the idea for a reality TV show, and the police came to believe the whole episode was just a reckless publicity stunt. The family was even interviewed on the Larry King Live TV show.

As the documentary reveals, the pair were given short jail sentences, but maintained their innocence and were pardoned by the governor of Colorado in 2020.

"Everybody started criticising us," reflects Richard Heene, who maintains his innocence to this day. "But all I wanted to do was make a really fantastic project for the kids."

The trailer includes lots of family footage of them working on the flying saucer. Also interviewed is a grown-up Falcon himself. "I think it's crazy how I was six years old, and I was able to affect the whole state of the country."

This is just the latest in a series of excellent Trainwreck documentary series. Personally, I especially enjoyed The Poop Cruise, about a cruise where pretty much everything that could go wrong did.

Having been born outside of Philadelphia (go Birds), I was raised to despise the Dallas Cowboys, and it stuck. While I can’t say that the Cowboys haven’t won a Super Bowl in my lifetime — they’ve actually won three in 1992, 1993 and 1995 — I can happily say that I have no recollection of any of those victories. But honestly, that’s probably what intrigues me about the upcoming Netflix docuseries, America’s Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys, which premieres on August 19 and debuted its first trailer on July 14.

Chapman and Maclain Way, the directors of Emmy-winning docuseries Wild Wild Country, director/producers of the Untold sports docuseries and directors of a personal favorite sports documentary, The Battered Bastards of Baseball (all of which are on Netflix), are the directors/producers of this new docuseries. Here they will talk with all the key figures from the Cowboys' heyday under owner Jerry Jones — including Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin, Emmitt Smith, Deion Sanders, Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer — to get an inside look at the team that helped define the 90s in the NFL.

Why would an Eagles fan want to watch a docuseries that potentially puts the Cowboys on a pedestal? I’m a fan of sports history, and while I love to see the Cowboys lose, I can’t help but be curious to learn about what put the Cowboys up on the pedestal in the early/mid 90s and the characters (most notably Jones) that keeps them in the media spotlight even today.

It’s the same reason that I enjoyed watching the Apple TV Plus docuseries on the Patriots, The Dynasty: New England Patriots. It’s first-hand accounts of all that happened from such a defining team in sports history. Basically, if you’re an NFL fan that cares about the history of the game, regardless of whether you’re a fan of the Eagles, Giants, Commanders or whatever team, this could be a fascinating watch.

This also feels like Netflix’s attempt at a The Last Dance type of hit. The 2020 docuseries that aired on ESPN detailed Michael Jordan, tracing his rise to being arguably the greatest basketball player of all time while also focusing on his final season with the Chicago Bulls. Now, nothing may be able to top the cultural impact that The Last Dance had as an early pandemic favorite, but America’s Team looks like it is aiming for that same type of vibe. (Funnily enough, The Last Dance is currently streaming on Netflix.)

This is just the latest example of Netflix’s push into the NFL. They recently premiered Quarterback season 2, which chronicles the 2024 seasons of Joe Burrow, Kirk Cousins and Jared Goff, and is part of a docuseries franchise from the streamer. Plus, Netflix is scheduled to be the exclusive home for a pair of Christmas Day NFL games for the second straight year.

To watch America’s Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys when it premieres on August 19, and any of the other Netflix NFL content, you must be a Netflix subscriber.

Some important new findings about our ancestors are going to be shared in the new docuseries Human, which is expected to be a landmark piece of science, and it first airs on Monday, July 14... depending on where you live. Don't worry, we'll help you find a way to watch it.

Human is helped by presenter and paleoanthropologist Ella Al-Shamahi, and it's set to chart the 300,000-year history of humans, from the early emergence of homo sapiens up until the creation of the first alphabet.

The series will unearth new discoveries about our past and is also set to illustrate our evolution in a brand-new way, by sharing new computer renditions of what past humans may have looked like (and you can see a glimpse at this in the header image above).

Human is set to be a must-watch for the curious-minded and so we'll help you work out how to watch it, no matter where you live.

How to watch Human in the US

If you live in the US, you're going to have to wait a little while to see Human.

That's because it's not set to air in July like it does in the UK, but will instead be available to watch two months later. Its premiere date is set for Wednesday, July 17 and we'll have to wait until nearer the time to learn if it'll release as a box set or with weekly uploads.

Thankfully lots of PBS content is free to watch, with the PBS App letting you stream uploads without paying for the two weeks after they air on the cable channel.

The PBS cable channel itself is included in two live TV streaming services: they are YouTube TV and DirecTV.

How to watch Human in the UK

As long as you pay your license fee, Human is set to be free to watch in the UK.

That's because it's broadcasting via, and in fact was made by, the BBC. The easiest way to watch the show is by loading up iPlayer because all five episode are available to stream on the platform right now.

If you'd instead like to see Human as it airs on TV, BBC2 will be your port of call. Episodes will air weekly on the channel at 9 pm, starting on Monday, July 14.

Can you watch Human in Australia

At the time of writing, no TV or online broadcast date for Human has been provided for Australian viewers.

It's not certain whether that'll change, or if the series will remain unavailable for Aussies. Something to point out is that the same was the case for another recent BBC docuseries Walking with Dinosaurs, but that eventually saw its way onto iView.

If, like me, you've grown tired of Netflix's stale roster of documentaries lately — cookie-cutter true crime and hyper-sensationalized coverage of tragic events — then its new movie is bound to be a breath of fresh air for you.

This new release is called Apocalypse in the Tropics, and it was released on the streamer on Monday, July 14. This follows a series of film festival screenings and premieres, one of which I attended at Sheffield DocFest ahead of the Netflix release.

Apocalypse in the Tropics looks at the rise of evangelical Christians in modern-day Brazil and how right-wing politicians use it for their own gain. It focuses specifically on past president Jair Bolsonaro and his conflict with his pre/successor Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

While the focus is on Brazilian politics, it's easy to extrapolate the themes to the US, given how closely religion is tied to politics in the country; in fact the movie makes several references to the POTUS. Its exploration of religion is bound to be controversial, not from any particular message or commentary but simply by choosing to look at divisive current affairs.

The movie was directed by Petra Costa, and it acts really well as a follow-up to 2019's The Edge of Democracy, which saw Costa nab an Oscar nomination. In fact, at the Q&A after my screening, she explained how the first scene of Apocalypse was actually captured while filming Edge.

I found Apocalypse in the Tropics a pretty harrowing look at how easy it is to manipulate people by using or abusing religion, especially with its closing scene.

However, Petra made it clear that the doc wasn't meant to be an attack on religion, stating in the Q&A that it's "a journey of being receptive to world views, in a moment when you feel these world views are responsible for the destruction of our society. That was what we were looking for: not how people move, but what moved people" and it does work, so you rarely feel that Petra is attacking people but just trying to find out what makes them tick and if it's a good thing.

The use of the word "journey" is apt as the movie loosely uses an essay format. Some people in my screening were receptive to it, but I can definitely see others being put off by the rambling monologues, which break up the story. I'll let you guess which camp I fall into.

At times, the doc is pretty funny too, which was a massive surprise. I wasn't expecting to think of The Thick of It while watching the movie...

Whether or not the doc works (its glowing reviews suggest it does), it's refreshing to see hard-hitting journalistic documentary filmmaking come to Netflix. It's been too long since the streamer offered me something that made me think.

Thankfully, that track record could change because I saw another doc at the same film festival which is also coming to Netflix at an as-yet-unconfirmed point in 2025: The Perfect Neighbor, which is already getting Oscar buzz. More on that when it's released.

• These are the best documentaries on Netflix

Few names are as synonymous with rock 'n' roll greatness as "Live Aid," a two-city event organized by singers-producers Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise relief funds for the 1983-1985 famine in Ethiopia, following the success of the charity single "Do They Know It's Christmas?". Taking place simultaneously at Wembley Stadium in London, England and John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 13, 1985, the 16-hour charity rock concert galvanized the world, bringing together some of the biggest names in music, from Mick Jagger and Tina Turner to US, Elton John, Madonna, Paul McCartney, U2 and Queen, among others.

And tonight, July 13, at 9pm Eastern Time, CNN is kicking off a four-part documentary series celebrating the 40th anniversary of the iconic 1985 concert: Live Aid: When Rock ‘n’ Roll Took on the World "explores the event’s legacy of reshaping global charity efforts and political action and how one Christmas pop song sparked a movement that has directly (or indirectly) raised tens of billions of dollars for Africa," per CNN.

"Bob Geldof, initially alone, then with Bono, challenged, embarrassed and embraced the world’s most powerful people, all in an attempt to address the unjust relationship between Africa and the West," continues the series description. "Live Aid: When Rock n’ Roll Took on the World is a tale of unimaginable tragedy, mad ambition, political machinations and amazing music."

Along with rare archival footage straight from the Live Aid stage as well as backstage gems with the likes of George Michael, Paula Yates and Boy George, the docuseries features interviews with iconic musical figures including Bob Geldof, Bono, Sting, Patti LaBelle, Phil Collins and Lionel Richie as well as global leaders including George W. Bush, Condoleezza Rice, President Obasanjo and Tony Blair.

Get up close and personal with some of the world's most endangered species in the new Apple TV+ adventure series The Wild Ones, which premiered on the streaming service on Friday, July 11.

From Netflix's new marine-themed game show All the Sharks (where photographers are tasked with snapping as many sharks as possible) to ITV's new reality competition SHARK! Celebrity Infested Water (where ocean-fearing famous folks come face-to-face with sharks) to the big 50th anniversary of that fin-focused classic Jaws, sharks are having quite the summer. And that will continue with National Geographic's seasonal shark programming, including tonight's premiere of Sharks Gone Viral: Fact Frenzy.

Sharks aren't just one of nature's most iconic and formidable predators—they're also social-media stars, a fact that the new hourlong Sharks Gone Viral: Fact Frenzy special explores during its premiere tonight, Saturday, July 12 at 9pm Eastern Time on Nat Geo. "It’s a social media feed frenzy as comedians Helen Hong, Keon Polee and the Sklar Brothers deep dive into the internet’s wildest shark videos—from lightning-fast shark attacks to sharks living on a golf course —while a panel of experts explore the science behind social media’s most influential fish," reads the special's official description, per the network.

The paleoanthropologist and explorer has previously hosted BBC2’s Neanderthals - Meet Your Ancestors in 2018, in 2020 she hosted Channel 4’s Jungle Mystery: Lost Kingdoms of the Amazon and teamed up with Chris Packham for BBC2’s Waterhole, which looked at wildlife at a reserve in Tanzania. In 2022 she presented Channel 4’s Tutankhamun: Secrets of the Tomb and she has also featured on BBC2’s Our Changing Planet.

Human – what is it about?

The documentary sees Ella Al-Shamahi travel across the globe to a range of archaeological sites where she unveils cutting-edge DNA and fossil discoveries that shed fresh light on our evolution. She also looks at other human species – some of whom lived at the same time as us – and examines why they became extinct but we managed to survive. Meanwhile 3D models, partly created using CGI, reveal what our early ancestors may have looked like and dramatic reconstruction portrays how they may have lived.

Episode One: The First Of Us

Ella Al-Shamahi travels to Morocco to look at a fossilised skull from 300,000 years that reveals how homo sapiens is 100,000 years older than previously thought. She also looks at how our adaptability, passing on of knowledge and talent for abstract thinking allowed us to make weapons and withstand crises such as climate change. And in a cave in Botswana, she examines a stone carving that hints at how early humans carried out rituals.

Episode Two: Into the Unknown

This episode reveals how homo sapiens migrated from their original home in Africa around 60,000 years ago to settle in the Middle East and beyond. Ella travels to the Sri Lanka rainforest to see how we lived in the harsh jungle and even hunted monkeys. On the island of Flores in Indonesia, she uncovers more about a tiny human species, homo floresiensis, dubbed the ‘Hobbit’. And she also looks at how we became the first humans to travel across the ocean to Australia 45,000 years ago.

Episode Three: Last Humans Standing

Ella looks at how Neanderthals, our closest relatives, had lived in Europe for nearly 400,000 years, when homo sapiens arrived there almost 55,000 years ago and she unveils how Neanderthals had developed to withstand the cold and how we interbred with them. But by 30,000 years ago, we were the only human species left – did we play a role in Neanderthals’ decline? She also travels to a cave in Spain to see a chilling site where a Neanderthal family was murdered.

Episode Four: Discovering the Americas

Humans first migrated to the Americas during the Ice Age, when it was the last habitable continent. Ella looks at how we hunted giant bears, mammoths and sloths but as the climate shifted, these animals faced extinction so we turned to farming. She also examines fossilised footprints, possibly of a mother and her child, who could have been some of the first settlers in North America.

Episode Five: A Great Gamble

In the final instalment, Ella examines how, around 12,000 years ago, as the Ice Age drew to a close, humans started to make permanent settlements. In Turkey she visits the world’s oldest temple Gobekli Tepe, and an early town, Çatalhöyük, but cramped urban living brought disease and unrest. But in Egypt Ella finds out how cities thrived. And in a turquoise mine in the Sinai desert, she examines how migrant workers created the first alphabet.

Bertie Gregory (Animals Up Close, Secrets of the Penguins), the Emmy-winning British wildlife filmmaker and National Geographic Explorer, has taken nature TV fans through some of the most remote places on earth, from tracking emperor penguins in Antartica to chronicling pumas in Patagonia and following marine iguanas in the Galápagos. And now the nature expert is gearing up for one of his most audacious missions yet: jumping into the wild waters of South Africa—a hotspot for great white sharks—cage-free.

Spotlighting one of the ocean’s most famous and feared predators, Sharks Up Close with Bertie Gregory premieres tonight, July 5 at 8pm Eastern Time on National Geographic. (It will also be available to stream on Disney+ and Hulu beginning tomorrow, July 6.) "Diving in the shallows without a cage, Bertie will attempt to film these huge sharks hunting seals," reads the official series description, per Nat Geo. "By entering their domain, he discovers the challenges they face on our rapidly changing planet."

“Everyone thinks that when you are trying to film a big, dangerous, scary predator, that you are constantly on the edge of running away,” Gregory told TV Insider ahead of tonight's premiere. “That’s not true, especially with many species of sharks. You’ve got to sneak up on them and do everything on their terms.” The TV star added: “I want the viewer to feel like they’re on my shoulder."

Netflix has added Shark Whisperer, a new documentary from Oscar-winning director James Reed, about the controversial marine conservationist Ocean Ramsey.

Ocean Ramsey's videos of her swimming freely with sharks have gone viral, and she says she is challenging the negative perception of sharks.

In the trailer, she says: "I want to prove to the world that they're not monsters. I'm good to go anytime. I want to push the limits. And if it doesn't go well, don’t blame the shark."

Ocean, who grew up on the island of Oahu in Hawaii, adds: "By catching people's attention, people actually care about a shark."

However, her critics have dismissed her actions as self-promotion disguised as environmentalism.

One person on the trailer says of Ocean's work: "It's more for show than it is for science."

Replying to her critics, Ocean says: "All of them [sharks] are headed towards the brink of extinction, and people want to comment on my approach to conservation?! The changemakers are the ones that try something a little different. We knew we had to do something more extreme to cut through the bulls**t."

Netflix promises a "visually arresting documentary that dives into the murky waters of modern conservation, where science, activism, and spectacle collide".

The streamer adds: "Driven by a desire to leave the age and decode shark language up close, Ocean strives to connect with these predators on an unprecedented level — hoping to challenge the negative perception of sharks.

"To her supporters, she’s a fearless advocate giving a voice to misunderstood predators. To her critics, her mission blurs the line between saving the planet and seeking the spotlight".

The film's British co-director, James Reed, won his Oscar in 2021 for My Octopus Teacher, which tells the story of a South African filmmaker who develops an unexpected friendship with an octopus. Reed co-directed Shark Whisperer with J.P. Stiles and Harrison Macks.

Is Shark Whisperer worth a watch?

Yes, it's from a quality team and tackles an interesting subject. It will be interesting to see how viewers view what Ocean has done.

Mariska Hargitay is known to TV fans as the longtime lead, Olivia Benson, on NBC's Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, but now get to know the Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning actress-producer as a director, with her documentary debut My Mom Jayne, premiering tonight on HBO and Max.

Debuting Friday, June 27 at 8pm Eastern Time, My Mom Jayne is centered on Hargitay's complicated relationship with her mother, Hollywood legend Jayne Mansfield—the actress and sex symbol behind such mid-century favorites as Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?, The Girl Can't Help It, The Wayward Bus and Too Hot to Handle—who died at the age of 34 in a horrific car crash when Mariska was only three-and-a-half years old. Hargitay was in the vehicle with her two siblings during the crash, but the children survived.

"Mariska Hargitay searches for the mother she never knew almost six decades after the Hollywood legend’s tragic death," reads the official doc synopsis, per HBO. "Through intimate interviews and an extensive collection of never-before-seen photos and home movies, she grapples with her mother’s complicated public and private legacy, uncovering the surprising layers and depth of who Jayne was, not only to her fans, but also to those closest to her."

"Featuring film clips from Jayne’s work in the 1950s and ‘60s, archival footage from her many talk show appearances and interviews, as well as striking personal footage, the film contextualizes the dazzling star power of the most photographed Hollywood celebrity of her day," per HBO. The deeply personal film also includes intel directly from Mariska’s siblings Jayne Marie Mansfield, Mickey Hargitay, Jr., Zoltan Hargitay, and Tony Cimber, as well as stepmother Ellen Hargitay and Jayne Mansfield’s press secretary Raymond “Rusty” Strait.

As for why she wanted to explore such an intimate and painful topic via documentary, Hargitay told The Hollywood Reporter: "The moment that I decided was during COVID. I had, obviously, been carrying the story with me for a long time. When I started thinking about how I don’t want to carry this anymore, I thought, “Should I write a book? Do I do a segment on Oprah? What do I do?” At the time, I was thinking this needed somebody who’s skilled and masterful at affairs of the heart, because this was such a delicate story...I don’t know that I’m a skilled enough writer [to write a book]. Documentary is just my medium. It’s a medium that speaks to me, and I love filmmaking. This is what I need to do."

Crafted from pale ivory silk taffeta with a fitted bodice incorporating antique Carrickmacross lace originally belonging to Queen Mary, the elaborate bridal gown Lady Diana Spencer wore when she married the then Prince Charles on 29 July 1981 at St Paul’s Cathedral in London remains one of the most iconic garments of all time.

Now, in new 5 documentary Secrets of Diana’s Wedding Dress, British fashion designer Elizabeth Emanuel and her former husband David Emanuel will chart the behind-the-seams story of how they made the fairy-tale frock, which broke royal records with its 25ft train.

As well as tales of Diana’s secret visits to their studio with the code name ‘Deborah’ and how a safe was installed to keep the designs and fabric swatches secure, Elizabeth will also share drawings and unseen personal photographs of how the dress went from a dream to reality.

Here, in an exclusive interview, Elizabeth, 71, tells us about her first impressions of Diana and why she thinks the gown is still such a source of fascination…

Diana was just 19 when she hand-picked you to design her wedding dress. What was she like back then?

"She was very young and very naive, but we immediately got on. She was absolutely lovely and she had a wicked sense of humour. David and I had only left college a year earlier, so when Diana chose us to design her dress, we went from being young students to the most famous designers in the world. That formed a bond between Diana and us. In a way, we were all new to the game."

How did the process of creating the garment begin?

"Our whole collection was already all ruffles, antique lace and silk chiffon. That was the look, and Diana just loved it. So we went through the designs together and she tried on all the dresses in our sample range. Everyone agreed she looked absolutely stunning in one particular style – and she just went for it! I knew it had to be big, it had to be dramatic, and I knew there had to be a long train. We said to Diana, ‘We’ve done some research and we think the longest train is about 23ft. So how about we make yours 25ft?’ And she loved the idea. She was very much in favour of making something very splendid and memorable: the ultimate fairy-tale princess dress."

What was it like in your studio when Diana visited for fittings?

"The atmosphere was very relaxed because we wanted to make it an oasis of peace and quiet for her. At that time, she was being pursued by the paparazzi, so we wanted her to feel she had a safe haven in the studio.

"Working with her was a dream. She used to stand for hours and she never complained. She also trusted us completely. We didn’t even have a confidentiality agreement! We stayed clear of asking about her private life and focused on the clothes, and she really loved that.

"The final fitting took place in a corridor in Buckingham Palace because it was the only place big enough to see the dress with the train fully extended. It was quite funny because we put all our bags and coats in Princess Anne’s bedroom, which was on the same corridor. We just stuck them on the bed!"

How difficult was it to keep the gown under wraps before the big day?

"We were under huge pressure from journalists and some of our team were offered vast amounts of money to share their secrets. We were also being spied on by the press, who were going through our bins, so we’d leave false trails of different coloured swatches to put them off the scent. Not even Charles or the late Queen Elizabeth II knew any of the details. But it was very stressful trying to keep it a secret and making sure nothing slipped out."

You were invited to the wedding. Was it exciting seeing the dress you’d designed in all its glory?

"It didn’t sink in until we were in St Paul’s Cathedral just how big a thing it was! Around 750 million were watching worldwide on the day. So I was a little bit stressed, and I took along smelling salts and sugar tablets in case Diana felt faint. I also made a spare skirt in case she spilled something down the front.

"But Diana was very calm, and it was a wonderful day. When she emerged from the royal carriage, she was like a beautiful butterfly emerging from a chrysalis!"

The 16ft-long veil Meghan Markle chose when she and Prince Harry tied the knot in 2018 is believed to be a nod to Diana’s 25ft train. What did you make of Meghan’s gown, and the dress Kate Middleton wore for her wedding to Prince William in 2011?

"I could see the statement Meghan was trying to make with her dress [designed by Clare Waight Keller under the Givenchy label], which was to have a very simple, plain white gown. But I wasn’t 100% keen on it.

"I loved Kate’s dress [designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen], though. It was very beautiful and very royal, and it didn’t take over. The dress didn’t wear her, she wore the dress."

It’s 44 years since the world got its first glimpse of Diana’s dress. Did you ever imagine that people would still be so fascinated by it today?

"No, I honestly don’t think anyone knew that it would become as big as it was. But I suppose the reason people still remember it, and talk about it, is because Diana was so famous and so iconic that the dress became iconic as well.

"Every designer on the planet wanted to make her wedding dress, and I still feel so lucky that Diana chose us. It literally changed my life."

I finally got around to watching the most talked-about show on Netflix currently, no not Squid Game season 3, but Poop Cruise!

The documentary, which is currently topping Netflix's most-watched movies list in the US and UK, charts how the 2013 Carnival Triumph Cruise went so badly wrong. An engine-room fire left the 4,000 people on board stranded at sea without power or flushing toilets. It led to raw sewage flowing down the corridors, and there's one moment I just can't stop thinking about.

If you like lasagna, perhaps don't read on… right so, you've been warned! One of the ship's chefs, Abhi, recalls how things got so bad people were covering their poop with toilet paper, creating layer after layer of toilet paper and poop which he desribes as being like a poop lasagna!

Abhi said, "I really had to go, number two. And I found this public restroom, and I go inside. And it was the most nastiest thing I have ever seen in my life. People were covering the poop with the toilet paper, and then again pooping on top of it. So it was layer after layer after layer. It was like a lasagna."

The voyage on the Carnival Triumph was meant to be a luxury cruise — a four-day round-trip from Galveston, Texas, to Cozumel, Mexico. However, it turned into a nightmare when the power went out. The passengers, many of whom slept on deck to avoid the stench, were infamously told to poop into red bags and chef Abhi recalls that didn't work out so well especailly for one person who attempted to throw their poop bag off the boat!

Abhi says: "People were throwing their red bags on the lifeboats. Somebody threw a poop bag and the wind blew it back onto somebody on the open deck downstairs. And that person was like: “What the f***k?!"

In the 55-minute documentary, we see passenger camera footage of what happens when 4,000 people don't have access to flushing toilets. Yep, it's not pretty. One passenger boasts of how they managed to avoid using a red bag by not going to the toilet for a number two for days, which is kind of impressive in a strange way!

If you’ve got the stomach for it, Poop Cruise is a highly entertaining watch as you listen to all the yucky stories from the passengers and the crew. Luckily, everything worked out ok in the end with the ship being towed safely to port in Mobile, Alabama.

Netflix documentary Poop Cruise, about a voyage where almost everything that could go wrong did, has hit the No 1 slot in the UK.

Despite only being released on the streaming service yesterday [Tuesday, June 24], the 55-minute documentary about the unfortunate 2013 Carnival Triumph cruise has taken the coveted top spot in the Netflix Top 10 films chart.

In case you’re wondering why it's called Poop Cruise it's because the toliets stopped working and passengers had to resort to novel ways to relieve themselves. "Well, we can do a number one in the shower," recalled one crew member.

The voyage on the Carnival Triumph was meant to be a luxury cruise — a four-day round-trip from Galveston, Texas, to Cozumel, Mexico.

However, an engine-room fire left the 4,000 people on board stranded at sea without power or flushing toilets. Soon, raw sewage leaked out all over the ship, food supplies dwindled, and passengers began to revolt.

The trailer shows how everyone went from having the time of their lives to having to potentially poop in a red bag. "I'm telling you it got bad fast,” says one passenger. Some holidaymakers started fighting as people became increasingly tense.

TV crews in helicopters were even flying above, reporting on the nightmare below.

Netflix says: “After an engine room fire destroys electrical cables supplying the entire ship, the boat is left drifting with no power for propulsion, refrigeration, lighting, air-conditioning or… worst of all, flushing toilets. Soon, raw sewage leaks out all over the ship, food supplies start dwindling and passengers begin to revolt. As the cruise company races to control the fallout, a media frenzy ensues. Soon everyone is talking about 'The Poop Cruise'."

Thankfully, in the end, after five days stranded at sea aboard the troubled ship, the cruise liner managed to dock in Mobile, Alabama.

However, an engine-room fire left the 4,000 people on board stranded at sea without power or flushing toilets. Soon, raw sewage leaked out all over the ship, food supplies dwindled, and passengers began to revolt.

The trailer sets the scene with the ship looking stunning and happy holidaymakers diving into the idyllic-looking pool. One passenger recalls: "We just love going on cruises. The food, the pool, the water slide. I mean, what more could you ask?”. Another passenger says, "This was absolutely the bachelorette party that I had dreamed of."

But then, a passenger remembers, the lights went out and the cruise ship was dead in the water.

The toilets aren't working!

Yep, and crucially for everyone used to the luxury of flushing toilets, the toilets stopped. This meant the guests had to use a combination of showers, sinks, and plastic bags to make up for the fact that the toilets weren't flushing.

"Well, we can do a number one in the shower," says one crew member. "I'm telling you it got bad fast," says another interviewee.

Another guest says they would never expect to have to poop in a red bag! Which is fair enough, no one expects that on a luxury cruise!! People then started panicking, and you could smell urine. What a holiday!

Helpfully for the makers, plenty of people on board had cameras filming the dramatic events, and camera crews from TV networks even hired boats so they could also shoot what was going on!

'Fights broke out'

To make matters worse, some people lost their cool and started fighting. "It's like something that came out of a nightmare movie,” says another guest.

Summing up the documentary, Netflix says: “After an engine room fire destroys electrical cables supplying the entire ship, the boat is left drifting with no power for propulsion, refrigeration, lighting, air-conditioning or… worst of all, flushing toilets. Soon, raw sewage leaks out all over the ship, food supplies start dwindling and passengers begin to revolt. As the cruise company races to control the fallout, a media frenzy ensues. Soon everyone is talking about 'The Poop Cruise'."

What happened in the end on The Poop Cruise?

Eventually, after five days stranded at sea aboard the troubled ship, the cruise liner managed to dock in Mobile, Alabama. Carnival said the company would pay for all passengers’ onward travel and fully reimburse everyone for the trip, and also offered other compensation methods.

Carnival today [Tuesday, June 24] made the following statement: "The Carnival Triumph incident over 12 years ago was a teachable moment for the entire cruise industry. A thorough investigation following the incident revealed a design vulnerability which was corrected and led Carnival Cruise Line to invest more than $500 million across our entire fleet in comprehensive fire prevention and suppression, improved redundancy, and enhanced management systems, all in support of our commitment to robust safety standards.

"This is in addition to our vigorous Health, Environmental, Safety and Security (HESS) protocols that guide the entire Carnival Corporation fleet as we maintain our commitment to industry leadership in this area. We are proud of the fact that since 2013 over 53 million guests have enjoyed safe and memorable vacations with us, and we will continue to operate to these high standards."

National Geographic is getting weird tonight—literally. Across six episodes, National Geographic's new show Planet Weird is celebrating some of the planet's most extraordinary wild characters, each more delightfully strange than the last.

Debuting tonight, June 20 at 7pm Eastern Time on National Geographic WILD, Planet Weird will detail Earth's oddest creatures and their wild survival tricks: "From dancing flame bowerbirds seeking love to flying draco lizards escaping snakes and venomous water spiders, see how nature's weirdest species adapt," reads the official series description.

"In the wild, having a big attitude is a survival strategy. From the camouflaging coconut octopus to finches with a strange taste for blood and even bats with breath that can erode a cavern wall, these animal gangsters are the definition of grit," the description reads. "For some, it’s about strength in numbers, while others enjoy a solo existence, but no matter the species’ preference, one fact remains: Only the weird can survive."

The two-episode premiere kicks off with "Origin Stories," which centers on the wildest and weirdest ways that animals like the Christmas Island crab create new life. That debut will be immediately followed up by episode 2, entitled "Superpower," at 8pm, chronicling strange species who've pulled out a bag of evolutionary tricks to not only survive but thrive, "from the aquatic spider that surfs a water web, to the saltwater crocodile equipped with pressure-dome sensors and the tarsier with its incredible night vision."

When did Noel Edmonds move to New Zealand?

In 2018 Edmonds and his make-up artist wife, Liz Davies, left the UK for fresh pastures at a pivotal point in his career. Now, they’re running a hospitality business called River Haven in the rural village of Ngatimoti on the country’s South Island.

“In 2016 Deal or No Deal was coming to an end after 3000 shows and over 10 years, so Liz and I decided to explore our options to move away from the UK. We had a fantastic holiday in New Zealand and returned thinking this could be our future,” explains Noel Edmonds.

“We started our Kiwi adventure north of Auckland, renting a house and, over time, we decided to move again and ended up at the top of the South Island in the stunning Tasman region.”

What’s available at Noel Edmonds River Haven complex?

After purchasing a picturesque plot of land in the stunning Moteuka Valley Noel and Liz began implementing their dream of transforming it into a unique destination.

In ITV’s documentary it’s shown that River Haven’s facilities include a traditional British pub called The Bugger Inn - complete with larger-than-life landlady Lisa and an enormous jar of pickled eggs - as well as an adjacent restaurant, a coffee cart and general store, surrounded by vineyards and farmland. However, as the couple discovered prior to the camera crew’s arrival, right now tourism is a risky business…

“We’ve got the challenge of the weather, absence of tourists and just about everybody else in the area going bust,” explains Noel. “We wake up to views of the mountains and a few kilometres away there’s a beautiful beach, the Moutere River, and within an hour’s drive you’re in serious wild bush terrain. But the weather here has attitude! When it blows, it really blows. When it rains, it’s tropical.”

What else can we expect from the series?

Noel Edmonds’ Kiwi Adventure opens with the couple as they prepare to reopen their doors after a bumpy beginning and a flurry of negative press.

In later episodes, new challenges arise, from a frost threatening the vineyards to plans for an energy garden coming a cropper. Yet, despite all this, Noel brims with novel ideas throughout the series, determined to turn River Haven’s fortunes around, from adapting sound frequency treatments to encourage plant growth to holding a massive event celebrating 75 years of Jaguar.

The series also introduces River Haven’s team to viewers.

“Bert [Noel’s right hand man] came with us from Matakana and used to run a small supermarket up there. Lisa runs the pub and she takes no prisoners, but has a heart of gold. And then there’s Jason… Well, can’t really explain what Jason does - you’ll have to watch! We’ve met some incredible people,” says Noel.

During the programme, Noel also shares his career highs, personal lows, and his age-defying health routine, which includes crystal therapy, cold showers and a hyperbaric chamber.

“We want to promote New Zealand, support the local economy and showcase what this community has to offer. I’ll also admit I wanted to show people a different side to me, so there’s a bit of ego involved,” says the Top Gear and Telly Addicts star.

“It was not easy moving halfway across the planet but I feel very at peace here and excited by it. Maybe people who’ve had negative thoughts about me personally will see this and see an honesty, a sincerity, a commitment, positivity, and maybe a few of them will even change their views.”

Netflix has added Trainwreck: Mayor of Mayhem, a new documentary showing the rise and fall of top Canadian politician Rob Ford.

Ford was, as Netflix puts it, "the brash yet beloved mayor of Toronto — until an infamous video of him smoking crack sparked his downfall".

The trailer provides a genuine insight into what to expect, including an interview with the journalist who broke the story. And, not surprisingly, she explains she was rather wary when she got a call on April Fool’s Day saying Ford was on a video smoking crack.

Holy s**t!

She says: "I remember getting a call from this guy who said he had a video of Ford smoking crack. It was April Fool's Day, which is never the day you wanna get a call like that. But yeah, I mean, I just… I handled it as professionally as I could and said, 'Okay, well, tell me more. Can I see it? Can we meet?'

"So we met at a parking lot. This guy pulled up and said, 'You know, leave your bags and your phones etc, in your car and get in this car'. And then drove us to a different location. Another individual got in the car.

"They seemed very nervous. I remember that they wouldn’t let us hold the phone. They were holding the phone, kind of showing it to us. But when the screen turned on, it was just so obvious that it was Rob Ford smoking out of a glass pipe. Holy s**t! And then they wanted to sell it to us for $100,000 dollars. But Canadian media does not pay for news.”

When news of the video broke, Rob Ford initially denied the allegations, branding them "ridiculous," but eventually he admitted to smoking crack.

"Yes, I have smoked crack cocaine," he said outside his mayoral office in late 2013. "There have been times when I've been in a drunken stupor."

More allegations about Rob Ford surfaced, including reports that he had knocked over a city councilor. Amazingly, given all the scandals, Ford prepared to run for mayor again and may well have won, but pulled out of the race in September 2014 after being diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. He died at the age of 46 in March 2016.

Rob Ford had a lot of supporters, and Trainwreck filmmaker Shianne Brown told The Canadian Press that she wanted to represent all aspects of his story.

“I wanted to really tap into the human being that is Rob Ford, not the political headline that is Rob Ford.

"There is a side of this story where you just go full force into the scandal, but that didn’t feel like it did the story justice or did Rob Ford and his many supporters and his friends and family justice."

From Happy Days to HBO's Barry, Henry Winkler has been a beloved fixture of American television for decades—and now the TV icon is ushering in his latest show, Hazardous History with Henry Winkler, on the History Channel tonight.

Premiering Sunday, June 15 at 10pm Eastern Time, the nostalgic new series explores the most exciting, reckless, unsupervised tales of Americana in our history. Each 60-minute episode "tells the stories of the things we did—for fun, for money, or out of plain boredom—that you can’t do anymore. Pastimes, practices, and products that were once allowed—even encouraged—which you will never see again in modern America," reads the official series description, per History.

For example, the premiere episode, entitled "Perilous Play," delves into the "outrageous toys and daredevil playground antics that once defined growing up," from explosive science kits to high-flying kite tubes. Elsewhere, the series will chronicle super-scary vintage stunts, "from the enigmatic Human Fly to skateboard speed demons and diving horses," while another installment will tackle "mad medicine," such as the misguided days when doctors would actually recommend smoking.

"Fast-paced, informative, and a little bit scary–from perilous playgrounds to precarious products, it’s a running cavalcade of the most exciting, reckless, unsupervised tales of Americana in our history," the network says of the new title.

Davina McCall and Nicky Campbell are both back for a seventh season of the series. As with previous series, the pair will meet up with a range of people who were left as babies and who are eager to learn about the circumstances and also track down any birth relatives.

Over the course of each episode, the pair then share findings with the foundling and speak to any family that has been traced, before the relations are brought together for a reunion.

Speaking about why the show is so special, Davina told us: “Not knowing about your beginnings or why you were left is something only other foundlings can understand. But there are enormous discoveries made that can change your life forever. To meet someone you’re related to is the most extraordinary gift.”

In 1966, infant Simon was left in the outside toilet block of a mother and baby home in Neath in south Wales. In an unrelated incident, four years later in Christchurch, England, newborn Lisa was left in another baby's pram. Almost 60 years later, Simon and Lisa are still desperate to know who left them and why.

"To have the original note means a lot to me because it’s the one thing I’ve got that connects me to my birth mother. It’s so precious," says Lisa, who now lives in France. "But I need to know the truth."

Lisa is also in for a surprise when she learns she has three full siblings, Tim, Jen and Lin. Although they had no idea of Lisa’s existence, they assumed she was abandoned during a difficult patch in their parents’ marriage. Emotions run high when they meet each other for the first time.

"I never anticipated finding a full sibling, let alone three," says Lisa. "I don’t feel so alone. I’ve got a family history that goes past me being found. It’s incredible!"

When a helpless baby boy was found in Milton Keynes in 1984, staff at a nearby hospital named him after the royal baby born just a few weeks earlier. 'Harry' was adopted and raised as Jon, but he is still haunted by the mystery of his start in life, and so is foundling Tina, who was left outside a hospital in Stoke-on-Trent in 1970.

Episode 3 - Wednesday, July 2
In this episode, we meet Sarah, who was left in the stairwell of a Surrey car park in 2001, making her the youngest foundling to appear on the show. Also looking for answers is Chris who, at three months old, was dropped off at a childminder's near Kings Cross in London, 62 years ago. He still needs to know who his birth family is and why nobody ever returned to pick him up.

Netflix has added Cocaine Air: Smugglers at 30,000 Ft, a true crime documentary about a case that gripped the French press and people.

On March 20, 2013, four French nationals were arrested on a private jet at the Punta Cana airport, Dominican Republic.

Two were ex-air force pilots, and two were passengers on board the plane destined for Saint-Tropez.

But, and here’s where it gets fascinating, on board was found 700kg of cocaine stored in 26 suitcases! The drugs had an estimated European street value of 20 million Euros.

Netflix teases: "None of them has the profile of an international drug smuggler and no one knows who the luggage belongs to. Who isn't telling the whole truth? Who's involved in the case? And what is hiding behind the mountain of drugs?"

In the trailer for the four-parter, one of the interviewees ponders who brings 26 suitcases for two days in the Dominican Republic?

What happened in the end?

The two pilots were arrested in the Dominican Republic, but while on bail, they fled in mysterious circumstances to the French Antilles. The two pilots were sentenced in absentia in the Dominican Republic to 20 years in jail.

They were then re-arrested, and they went on trial in France. They were sentenced to six years in prison by a French court.

In a further twist, the two airmen were then acquitted on appeal in 2021.

Incredibly, the judiciary at one point examined former French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s phone records. Sarkozy is interviewed in the Netflix documentary. “When I was reading it, I'm like, ‘This cannot be real. Like, this is not real, right?’" actress Jana Kramer told ABC News about the script for Lifetime's latest true crime thriller, Kidnapped by a Killer: The Heather Robinson Story, which premieres on the cable network tonight, June 7 at 8pm Eastern Time.

And it is, shockingly, a very true story, about a Kansas City's teen whose whole world comes crashing down when she learns that her uncle is actually a serial killer responsible for the murders of multiple women in the area, including her biological mother.

Per the movie's official synopsis: "Heather Robinson (Rachel Stubington) grew up in a loving family in Illinois and, by the time she was a teen, had long known that she had been adopted as an infant by her parents. But in 2000, the then-15-year-old’s world was shattered when she learned that the man she knew as her uncle, John Robinson (Steve Guttenberg), was actually a serial killer accused of murdering multiple women in the Kansas City area, including her biological mother. After her uncle’s arrest, Heather learns the shocking truth about her birth mother’s disappearance."

Along with Rachel Stubington as Heather and Steve Guttenberg as Uncle John, the cast of Kidnapped by a Killer: The Heather Robinson Story includes Jana Kramer, Ross Crain, Deja Dee, Jackie Sanders, Rose Decker, Sarah Hudson, Lily Talevski, Robyne Parrish and Molly Miller.

Guttenberg, known for his roles in classic comedies like Police Academy and Three Men and a Baby, spoke to Remind magazine about going against-type to play a violent killer in the new Lifetime drama. “It’s such a great opportunity to be able to go outside your wheelhouse,” he said. “And I think that’s the classic nature of acting — people want to see you pop up through different holes. They want to see you surprise them.”

“To me, it was a story about destruction and what one man can do, [how] one man can change so many lives [through his actions],” the actor added.

James Reed is a director and producer who has made numerous wildlife films, including Jago: A Life Underwater, Rise of the Warrior Apes, and Netflix’s My Octopus Teacher about freediver Craig Foster who formed a year-long bond with a curious young octopus. The film won an Oscar in 2021 for Best Documentary Feature for James Reed and Pippa Ehrlich.

What's Jamie hoping to achieve with Jamie's Dyslexia Revolution?

Jamie's chief goal is to improve the lives of children with dyslexia. He says: "I just want to look 13-year-old kids — who are struggling with reading — in the eye and say to them 'you are NOT worthless…'".

More specifically, Jamie wants to change what the show describes as an "archaic education system," which blocks children with dyslexia from reaching their full potential.

One obvious area that could be improved is the speed at which it takes to determine if your child is dyslexic. Some children are not being picked up until secondary school, and many are no doubt missed altogether.

Jamie is campaigning for all children to be screened for dyslexia within the first two years of school, as well as for more support and training for teachers.

His campaign is backed by presenters Holly Willoughby and Jamie Laing, both of whom are dyslexic.

Jamie Oliver, of course, previously campaigned strongly to improve the nutrition in school meals with great success. He also campaigned for free school meals.

Tim Hancock, commissioning editor at Channel 4 says, "There's surely no more powerful or effective campaigner in the UK than Jamie, and now he’s turning his expertise to a subject extremely close to his heart, and in dire need of his help. He said: "School for me was a tricky one. I was very happy. I enjoyed my time at school but as far as actual schooling was concerned, I struggled at every point. I couldn't read very well. I couldn't write very well. I couldn't spell very well.

"And most of the classes required me to be good at all of those otherwise you're ungraded or a very, very bad result, which that as me. I got two GCSEs. So I did struggle.

"My story isn't one of violins and, sort of, sorrow and sobbing. I powered on and was just very self aware of what I was bad at and then tried to collaborate with people to fill my weaknesses, and I've spent 30 years doing that."

Netflix has released a trailer for Attack on London: Hunting The 7/7 Bombers, a new documentary coming to the streaming service in July about the 2005 terrorist attack.

On July 7, 2005, four British men detonated suicide bombs on the London transport system, killing 52 and injuring over 700.

Among those interviewed are survivors, victims’ families, people who knew the bombers, police investigators, the lead explosives expert, the then Prime Minister Tony Blair, the head of MI5, key firearms officers, citizen heroes, journalists and campaigners.

A survivor (main picture above) describes in the trailer (below) the moment one of the terrorists launched their attack, saying: "I could feel somebody staring at me, just see his hand go and then…"

Tony Blair is seen in the trailer (below) speaking about his fear that there would be further attacks. "Our anxiety was that this was the first and that there would be other attacks that would come."

Netflix says: "A failed second attack, two weeks later, triggered Britain’s biggest-ever manhunt and led to the fatal police shooting of an innocent man. As the country struggled to make sense of these shocking events, the authorities raced against the clock to stop further attacks."

We hear survivors describe in detail the aftermath of the attacks. The documentary makers also speak to the family of Jean Charles de Menezes, an innocent Brazilian electrician who was shot dead after being wrongly suspected of being a terrorist. He was shot by the police in Stockwell station in south London on 22 July 2005, just weeks after the 7 July bombings.

Netflix says the documentary series “puts us back inside the events, minute by minute, tracing the shockwaves of the attacks and the hunt to find those responsible. How and why did this happen?"

How many episodes are there?

The series is four parts. Netflix has given out summaries of each episode:

Episode 1: London's tube network is struck by three huge explosions. As the injured and dying lie in the wreckage, another explosion hits above ground, on a bus. Panic and fear spreads and investigators begin a manhunt. Clues are found at the bomb sites and on CCTV and it becomes clear this is London's worst ever terrorist attack and its first ever suicide bombings. What else is to come?

Episode 2: Who are the bombers and who else is out there? CCTV images and evidence found at the bomb sites take investigators to Leeds, Yorkshire. As a picture emerges of the young British men responsible, police fear further attacks. They desperately search for signs of a wider network. As the investigation slows down, another group of bombers attack London again.

Episode 3: Another terror attack hits London. The bombs fail - but four would-be suicide bombers escape and are now on the loose. The UK's biggest ever manhunt begins and armed police flood London. As the identity of one of the bombers becomes clear, an operation to capture him ends in tragedy, when an innocent man is shot by police.

Episode 4: The identity of the man shot by police is revealed to his family, and the news is greeted with fear and anger across London. The police are now in the spotlight. The manhunt for the failed suicide bombers continues as they evade authorities. Will they be caught before they attack London again and before more lives are lost?

Sconce was convicted for multiple crimes all stemming from his bizarre business decisions, like hiring hitmen to attack rivals and organizing mass cremations, betraying the trust of people who expected him to care for their deceased loved ones.

The darkly gripping series—which was directed by Joshua Rofé and produced by Hollywood star Jonah Hill—features an exclusive interview with Sconce, newly released from prison, which gives insight into the lucrative multibillion-dollar mortuary industry and what can happen behind closed doors. With emotional interviews with families of the victims of the Lamb Funeral Home and revelations from former employees, The Mortician hauntingly details the scandal that shook Southern California in the '80s.

The movie's award-winning director Steven Spielberg, will be telling the story that launched his career into the stratosphere and earned him final cut on the film, which means creative control for the last 50 years.

Steven recounts how the production became high-stakes as it was beset with difficulties, from a malfunctioning mechanical shark that was nicknamed "Bruce" and many weather delays to his own post-production PTSD and fears the film would end his career.

The documentary also reexamines the infamous "Jaws effect", unleashing a wave of shark fear, but also an enduring respect for the ocean’s top predator.

With home footage and photos from his personal archives Spielberg reflects on how shooting mid-ocean, never-ending issues with the mechanical shark and tensions between lead actors Richard Dreyfuss and Robert Shaw meant the film went wildly over schedule and over budget – and even threatened to end his career.

"My instincts told me the film needed authenticity, so it needed to be out to sea on location," says Spielberg, now 78. "But we were way out of our element. We were on the ocean for almost five months, and we all began going off the deep end, literally. It was very hard being out on the real ocean, being knocked around by the waves, by the currents. ‘Then on top of all tha,t 80 per cent of the time the shark didn’t work. It was really demoralising and I was terrified I was going to be fired. All I thought about was going home.’

Yet the tale of a great white shark terrorising the small island of Amity became an instant box office smash and it still remains a cult classic 50 years later.

But despite the film’s box office triumph Spielberg admits he suffered from panic attacks for years afterwards. "I had a really tough time when I finished the movie. The success of Jaws was fantastic but it didn’t stop me waking up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat,’ he says. ‘We didn’t have the words PTSD in those days but I had consistent nightmares about directing Jaws for years afterwards. It was a life-altering experience. On the one hand it was traumatising, but I also owe everything to Jaws. It’s the film I thought would end my career, but it actually began it."

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the film, Peter’s wife Wendy features in this new Nat Geo Wild and Disney Plus documentary about the making of Jaws, where she shares tales of her late husband’s inspiration for the book and how Jaws propelled them both into a lifetime of shark conservation.

Here, in an exclusive interview, Wendy, 84, shares some behind the scenes filming secrets and reflects on the legacy of Jaws…

What initially inspired your husband Peter to write a novel about a great white shark terrorising a coastal community?
"Peter had always had a fascination with sharks. As a teenager he’d go fishing with his dad on Nantucket Island and there would always be lots of sharks in the water. So for a long time he had this idea in his back pocket to write a story about a great white that hovers around a New England town and causes a little chaos. But when he finally got round to writing it he had no idea it would become a bestseller!"

Did director Steven Spielberg consult with Peter when it came to making the film?
"Oh yes, absolutely. Peter initially co-wrote the screenplay, although he was very happy when [American screenwriter] Carl Gottlieb came along and took over the day-to-day writing! But before filming started he and Steven had many back and forth conversations about the shark. In reality great whites are only around 15ft long and Peter fought hard to keep the mechanical shark used in the film as realistic as possible. But, as the magic movie-maker, Steven understood that the shark had to be 25ft to make it into enough of a monster to give the film its drama. But I want people to be assured that there aren’t actually any 25ft sharks in the ocean!"

Peter also landed a cameo role as a TV reporter, so did you get to spend time on set?
"Yes, we spent a few weeks at Martha’s Vineyard, where the movie was shot. We had a wonderful time there with [Richard] Dreyfuss, [Robert] Shaw and [Roy] Scheider, and having Peter do this little cameo part was great fun for all our family. You know, it was all new to us, but it was so fascinating. Dreyfuss was so funny, and as we know Shaw was a brilliant actor, but a little bit prickly, so you kind of had to be careful around him. And Roy Scheider was just a lovely human being who couldn’t believe he was in this movie starring alongside a great white shark!"

What did you make of the film when you first saw it?
"The first time we watched it we were with Richard [Dreyfuss] at a big theatre on Broadway in New York City. At the end, everybody stood up in the audience and cheered and screamed. Afterwards, we were on the sidewalk and I remember Richard just jumping up and down, saying, ‘we did it, we did it!’ He used some swear words too, which I won't repeat, but I think everybody was just elated because it was such a difficult film to make. That made the success even sweeter!"

How did the film change your life?
"It led us on a path of conservation and education work. At first Peter and I were horrified that some people took Jaws as a license to kill sharks. It was very disappointing. We really worked hard to change people’s perception and Peter got hundreds, maybe thousands of letters from people all over the world saying how the movie scared them but also made them want to know more about sharks. I’m so grateful for that. In so many ways Jaws has had a positive effect – it’s helped us understand sharks and want to save them."

Why do you think Jaws has remained such a cult classic 50 years on?
"The film is fantastic! The power of the movie is in the three main characters – Quint, Hooper and Sheriff Brody – and the nightmare situation they’re in. But I’d also go right back to the bones of the story and I think Peter created a really fascinating book. Not only did he have a real understanding of sharks, but because he was from Nantucket his characterisation of all the locals was very important. You know, nobody ever touched a word of that first chapter, which gives you the feel of what it would be like in the water with one of these magnificent great white sharks. But Steven was the one who brilliantly brought it all together. He gave the movie great depth!"

Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey are producers. For Nedland Films, Laurent Bouzereau and Markus Keith are producers, with Bouzereau also directing. And, for National Geographic, Tracy Rudolph Jackson and Ted Duvall executive produces.
