Netflix has been home to some of the biggest true crime titles recently and the streamer has another one on its hands with The Good Nurse. While the likes of Girl in the Picture and I Just Killed My Dad are documentaries/docuseries, The Good Nurse is a narrative movie but based on the true story of Charles Cullen.

With two Oscar-winners headlining its cast, The Good Nurse is sure to draw eyeballs as one of 2022’s new movies (and part of Netflix’s massive slate of fall 2022 movies). Here is everything we know about The Good Nurse.

Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne star in The Good Nurse, playing Amy Loughren and Charles Cullen, respectively.

Chastain is coming off her Oscar win for Best Actress in The Eyes of Tammy Faye in 2021, but of course is also known for roles like Zero Dark Thirty, The Help, Molly’s Game and Interstellar. She has already had one movie in 2022, the spy-action movie The 355, and is going to appear in Armageddon Time as well before the year is over.

Redmayne is also an Oscar winner, taking home the Best Actor trophy for The Theory of Everything. The British star has also been leading the Fantastic Beasts franchise and appeared in movies like The Trial of the Chicago 7, The Danish Girl and Les Miserables.

What happened to Charles Cullen?

SPOILER ALERT if you want to find out more about Charles Cullen from The Good Nurse.

Charles Cullen worked as a nurse at various hospitals in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. As the movie depicts, Cullen was ultimately brought to justice by his co-worker, Amy Loughren, who followed unusual details from Cullen’s work to reveal that he was actually responsible for deliberately killing patients.

Cullen was convicted of killing 29 patients in 2006 but has officially confessed to killing as many as 40. However, it is thought that he could have murdered as many as 400 patients, which would make him the most prolific serial killer in recorded history.

To avoid the death penalty, Cullen entered into a plea agreement. A judge in New Jersey ruled that he serve 11 consecutive life sentences, while another six life sentences were added to his sentence by a Pennsylvania judge. Cullen is not eligible for parole until at least 2388.

The magic of the Harry Potter universe will return to the big screen in 2022, as Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, the third film in the wizarding world spinoff/prequel franchise, is set for release. Now, fans have received their first look at the new movie with the first Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore trailer ahead of its April 15 release, featuring familiar faces and one big new one.

While the central character of the Fantastic Beasts movies is Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), a magical zoologist with a suitcase full of incredible creatures, the plot of these movies have become much more about a young Dumbledore (Jude Law) and the emergence of the powerful and dangerous wizard, Grindelwald.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore picks up after Grindelwald has drawn a number of wizards and witches to his cause of going to war against muggles, while Newt and Dumbledore want to stop him. Newt, his brother Theseus (Callum Turner), muggle Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler) and more are teaming up to hunt down Grindelwald, while Dumbledore looks to be dealing with Credence (Ezra Miller), a troubled young man who has been told by Grindelwald that he is a lost Dumbledore sibling.

These are just the hints of the plot that we’ve gathered from the trailer, as Warner Bros. has yet to release an official synopsis. Fans are also sure to notice a few nods to the original Harry Potter movies, including Aberforth Dumbledore, the Room of Requirement and at least an extended sequence at Hogwarts.

Of course, the trailer also gives fans their first good look at Mads Mikkelsen, who has taken over the role of Grindelwald from Johnny Depp, who portrayed the evil wizard in the first two movies. Depp was accused of physical abuse of Amber Heard, after which he was dropped from the movies going forward. It might take a minute to get used to, but Mikkelsen is a very talented actor who should be able to have some fun with the role.

Oddly enough, it doesn’t look like Katherine Waterson’s Tina Goldstein appears in the trailer; she has been Newt’s romantic interest in the first two films and is listed in the credits for The Secrets of Dumbledore, but for some reason didn’t make the cut in this first trailer (maybe she's in the background of one of these shots, but it certainly isn't clear). Other cast members include Alison Sudol, Jessica Williams and Victoria Yeates. David Yates is directing.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore won’t be the only return to Hogwarts in 2022. On New Year’s Day, a reunion special to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the movie premiere of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (aka Philosopher’s Stone) — appropriately titled Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts — will premiere on HBO Max and Sky.

Move over Harry Potter. JK Rowling has conjured up another wizard of a hero in Newt Scamander. "Giddily enjoyable"

Director David Yates, maker of the last four Harry Potter films, handles all this tremendously well, pulling off moments of high-spirited comedy and episodes of danger and derring-do with dash and verve. Meanwhile, the film’s evocation of a Jazz Age magical metropolis living cheek by jowl with Prohibition-era New York is thoroughly enchanting. Coleen Atwood's Oscar-winning costumes only add to the wonder.

But it is Rowling who deserves the most kudos. Her imagination as capacious as Newt's suitcase, she displays total assurance in expanding the Harry Potter universe into a different time period and continent. The setting may be new for Rowling, but the message of tolerance underpinning the narrative is as timely as ever. Fantastic Beasts is Rowling's first screenplay and marks the first in a proposed five-film series. If they are as thoroughly captivating as this giddily enjoyable fantasy adventure then we are in for a treat.

Move over Harry. The Potterverse has a new hero. Newt Scamander, played with bags of beguiling, diffident charm by Eddie Redmayne, takes on the boy wizard's mantle and proves that JK Rowling has conjured up another winner.

His first screen outing, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is a smart cinematic spin-off from the spoof textbook that Rowling wrote in aid of Comic Relief in 2001. Required reading for Harry Potter in his first year at Hogwart's, the book was purportedly the work of a young English magizoologist named Newt Scamander. Now we get to meet him in the flesh at the moment he arrives at New York's Ellis Island in 1926, his incredibly capacious suitcase packed with magical creatures.

A mix of bashfulness and enthusiasm, Redmayne's Newt has the air of an overgrown schoolboy, right down to his ungainly manner and slightly pigeon-toed walk. He is also, like his future boarding school reader, idealistic and brave. The wizarding world's David Attenborough, he is a humane champion of the creatures he studies, believing they should be protected rather than killed.

"His magical menagerie"

Unfortunately, he's barely stepped foot in New York before some of his magical menagerie breaks loose after he accidentally swaps suitcases with a No-Maj (as Muggles are known in America) named Jacob (Dan Fogler). Sure enough, his beasts - including a mischievous platypus-like kleptomaniac known as a niffler - are soon creating havoc in the city.

It could not be a more inopportune time for the mayhem. America's magical folk are at odds over how to deal with the No-Maj world. Meanwhile, a tub-thumping zealot named Mary Lou Barebone (Samantha Morton) is trying to rouse her fellow citizens to the presence of witches in their midst. And an extremely dangerous dark magical force is at large.

"Danger and derring-do"

Redmayne's Newt is soon in the thick of things, trying to recapture his escaped beasts while simultaneously evading the clutches of the local wizarding authorities, MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America). He gets help from Fogler's tubby, enormously endearing Jacob, a factory worker who dreams of opening his own bakery; and from demoted MACUSA agent Tina Goldstein (Katherine Waterston from Inherent Vice) and her bubbly mind-reading sister Queenie (singer Alison Sudol). As pandemonium mounts, this quartet proves to be the only ones who can avert disaster.

Ricky Gervais's comic creation David Brent will perform the title song of his movie Life On The Road for the BBC's Children In Need night

Ricky Gervais is reprising his David Brent role for this year’s BBC Children In Need appeal show.

The comedian, who found fame playing the office manager on BBC mockumentary The Office 15 years ago, will perform the title track from the film David Brent: Life On The Road, which was released in August.

The star joins a line-up of famous faces for the annual charity appeal show, including Eddie Redmayne, who will appear in a special sketch, pop stars Little Mix, and Rob Brydon, Lee Mack and David Mitchell, who will feature in an edition of Would I Lie To You?

The cast of EastEnders will appear and Team GB Olympic athletes, including gold medal-winning rower Helen Glover and hockey player Hollie Webb, will take part in a Strictly Come Dancing special.

Canadian superstar Michael Bublé – who revealed earlier this month that his three-year-old son Noah had been diagnosed with cancer – has recorded a special performance for the programme.

Doctor Who fans will get a first look at the show’s Christmas episode, entitled The Return Of Doctor Mysterio.

The clip will see the Doctor, played by Peter Capaldi, and Nardole, played by Matt Lucas, team up with an investigative reporter played by Charity Wakefield and a masked vigilante played by Justin Chatwin to defend New York from a terrifying alien invasion.

Ricky’s one-off performance is being recorded on Wednesday November 16 – two days before the show screens – and fans can apply for tickets to be in the audience via www.bbc.co.uk/showsandtours/shows.

Children In Need this year will star Eddie Redmayne, along with an EastEnders 'extravaganza' and a special junior edition of Would I Lie To You?

November's BBC Children in Need appeal night will feature a special sketch starring Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne.

The sketch was filmed on the set of his new film, Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, and features more showbiz stars alongside Eddie, who won the best actor Academy Award for The Theory of Everything in 2014.

Eddie said: “I have such fond memories of Children in Need - growing up, I loved watching all the special sketches and performances, and of course, Sir Terry Wogan’s inimitable presenting. It is a charity very close to my heart so you can only imagine how chuffed I was to be asked to do a special sketch for this year.  I can’t wait for you all to see what we have in store.”

As well as Eddie's sketch, Children In Need night will screen an EastEnders segment which producers promise will be an 'extravaganza which is sure to take many people’s breath away', while Rob Brydon is back in the host’s chair for a very special Children in Need junior edition of Would I Lie To You?

Other stand-outs included a mass children's choir singing in unison from 10 different lcoations around Britain; Olympic stars joining up with Strictly professionals on the dance floor; a special performance by Michael Bublé, as well as Little Mix and the cast of Aladdin The Musical.

The BBC Children in Need 2016 presenters are Tess Daly, Greg James, Graham Norton, Ade Adepitan, Rochelle and Marvin Humes and it will take place on Friday, November 18 on BBC1.

British star Eddie Redmayne is celebrating his first Father’s Day as a dad after his wife gave birth to a baby girl

Oscar-winning actor Eddie Redmayne and his wife Hannah Bagshawe welcomed their daughter on Wednesday.

According to varying reports, they have named their new arrival either Iris May Redmayne or Iris Mary Redmayne.

Eddie and Hannah were married at Babington House in Somerset in December 2014.

The couple confirmed they were expecting when they appeared at the Golden Globes in January.

Eddie later said that the couple had decided not to find out in advance whether they were having a boy or a girl.

Speaking at the Oscars, he told Extra: “It’s gonna be a surprise.

“I’m going to be honest. I was like, ‘Maybe we should find out’ and my wife’s like, ‘We’re not finding out’. She wears the trousers.”

Before Eddie, 34, found international fame in Hollywood he appeared in The Pillars of the Earth (2010), Tess of the D'Urbervilles (2008), and an episode of Doctors in 2003!

Like leading duo Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander, this ravishing costume drama about the Danish artist who blazed a trail for gender reassignment is very pretty to look at, but for a film about a daring social pioneer The Danish Girl is far too decorous and safe for its own good.

Largely departing from the historical facts, director Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech) cleaves instead to biopic convention, handsomely setting his scene in 1920s Copenhagen, where successful landscape painter Einar Wegener (Redmayne) is happily married to fellow artist Gerda (Vikander).

Then comes the moment of revelation. Einar steps in for an absent model, donning women’s stockings and shoes to allow Gerda to complete a painting and the frisson he experiences leads him to question his gender identity.

Redmayne is very striking as Einar explores his feminine side and realises his true self as ‘Lili’, with ultimately tragic consequences. And the Oscar-winning Vikander is even more impressive as the confused but supportive Gerda. But Hooper’s overly stuffy approach prevents the movie from really taking wing.

Hollywood’s finest are set to descend on London this weekend as Eddie Redmayne does battle with Leonardo DiCaprio for the Leading Actor gong at the British Academy Film Awards.

British star Eddie, 34, is up for the honour for a second year in a row for The Danish Girl, while Leo will be hoping to continue his triumphant awards season tour for his role in The Revenant.

Leo, 41, who has been lauded by the critics for his portrayal of Hugh Glass in the wilderness, has already won the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award among others.

The pair face competition from Michael Fassbender in Steve Jobs, Matt Damon in The Martian and Bryan Cranston in Trumbo.

Eddie won the award last year for his performance as Professor Stephen Hawking in The Theory Of Everything.

His on-screen partner in The Danish Girl, Alicia Vikander, is up for the Leading Actress award alongside Brie Larson for Room, Saoirse Ronan for Brooklyn, Cate Blanchett for Carol, and Dame Maggie Smith for The Lady In The Van.

The five movies up for best film are The Big Short, Bridge Of Spies, The Revenant, Carol and Spotlight.

Other nominations include nods for Kate Winslet, Julie Walters, and Alicia again, for Best Supporting Actress, while Idris Elba, Christian Bale and Mark Rylance are among the men up for Best Supporting Actor.

The films leading the nominations with a total of nine nods each are Bridge Of Spies and Carol. Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been nominated in four categories.

British director Sir Ridley Scott will be hoping for his first Bafta win in the director category after being nominated for The Martian.

Brooklyn, which has picked up six nominations in total, is also nominated for Outstanding British Film alongside 45 Years, The Danish Girl, Ex Machina and The Lobster.

The British Academy Film Awards, which are seen as a good indicator of who will achieve Oscar success, will be handed out at a star-studded ceremony at London’s Royal Opera House.

The ceremony, hosted by Stephen Fry, will be broadcast on BBC1, Sunday, February 14, 9.00pm.

James Norton has spoken out in defence of Eton-educated Oscar-winning actor Eddie Redmayne.

The star, who is currently on screen as Prince Andrei Bolkonsky in the BBC’s adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s War And Peace, offered his take on 'well-spoken' actors.

“If there’s a higher amount of period drama, there’s a higher amount of ‘well-spoken’ actors,” he told the Radio Times.

The London-born actor added: “It’s a real shame, though, when you get somebody like Eddie Redmayne, who is such a great ambassador for British drama – two Oscar nominations in two years, it’s extraordinary – and at least half the press coverage on him is about the fact he went to Eton.”

Set in the Yorkshire Valleys, BBC1’s award-winning crime drama stars Sarah Lancashire as police sergeant Catherine Cawood.

Dedication to her job masks Cawood’s personal family tragedies: she believes Tommy is responsible for her daughter’s rape and eventual suicide.

The policewoman’s marriage to Richard Cawood (portrayed by Derek Riddell) broke down, she is estranged from her son Daniel (Karl Davies) and Catherine’s sister Clare (Downton Abbey’s Siobhan Finneran) is in recovery from heroin addiction.

The acclaimed 2014 portrayal of unhinged Tommy turned out to be the breakthrough role for James.

He received a Bafta nomination for best supporting actor in 2015, losing out to Stephen Rea who won for The Honourable Woman.

ITV’s Grantchester followed, with James heading the cast of the 1950s-set series as sleuthing vicar Sidney Chambers.

With little to do other than work-out, the imprisoned man’s focus is on his nemesis.

“He’s spent hours and hours just lying on his bed, filling himself with hate for Catherine,” James said. To depict Tommy’s increased muscle bulk, the Rada-trained actor avoided alcohol and went to the gym for a month.

The relationship between Catherine and Tommy was a highlight of the first run, but series two will see a change.

“It wasn’t hard for me to get back into the on-screen relationship with Sarah, even though I don’t, in this series, have the privilege of acting so much with her.”

But James promised aficionados 'an even stranger dynamic between them this time'.

Eddie Redmayne says he wants to be “an ally” instead of “talking for” the transgender community as he stars in The Danish Girl.

The actor plays Lili Elbe, a transgender woman who was one of the first recipients of sex reassignment surgery.

Appearing on BBC1's Graham Norton Show this New Year's Eve, Eddie said: “It’s been 15 years in the making and has come out at time when there has been such a shift in these issues coming to the mainstream.

“The story is so beautiful and the people from the trans community I met in preparing for the part were incredibly generous. It has been a privilege and, while not in any way talking for the community, I’m trying to learn to be an ally.”

The actor has previously revealed that he went out as Lili on the streets of Copenhagen between filming.

He told Graham Norton: “I was trying to get all sort of ‘method’ on it, but I’m not sure how successful I was, because at 6ft tall with a red wig and wearing 1920s gear, people just stared. But I learnt a lot about the trans world.”

The film has already earned him awards nominations, including a Golden Globe nod for Best Actor.

Eddie already has a host of awards including a win for Best Featured Actor in a Play at the Tony Awards – where he brought his mother along as his guest.

He said: “I took her as my date to the Tony Awards and I drummed into her, ‘They will point a camera at you so don’t be angry or upset if I don’t win’.

“So when I did win, I was so elated, but my mum was too terrified of what I had said to react at all and just sat there looking scared.”

Eddie Redmayne and his wife of one year, publicist Hannah Bagshawe, are reportedly expecting their first child.

The Sun claimed that Eddie and Hannah, both 33, are “delighted” and have told friends and family, indicating she is past the 12-week stage of her pregnancy.

It’s been a big year for the couple who married at Babington House in Somerset in December 2014 and then experienced the high of Eddie’s Oscar win for his role in "The Theory of Everything" in February.

The couple have apparently decided not to find out the sex of the baby, but one’s thing for sure – with those genes, it’s going to be one talented kid.

They aren’t the only celebrity couple to be capping off 2015 with a bun in the oven. Here are the stars who’ll become parents for the first time next year.

Anne Hathaway is reportedly pregnant – we say reportedly because she’s not publicly confirmed it, but her huge baby bump is confirmation itself. It will be the first child for the 33-year-old and her husband, Adam Shulman, who married in September 2012.

Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood and his third wife, theatre producer Sally Humphreys will be having twins in June 2016, their rep confirmed. While it’s the first child(ren) for Sally, the two new babies will add to 68-year-old Ronnie’s already large brood of Jesse, Leah, Jamie and Tyrone. The new additions will be younger than their nieces and nephews too, as Ronnie has six grandkids.

The Hunger Games star Sam Claflin and his actress wife Laura Haddock ("Luther", "Da Vinci's Demons"), managed to keep their happy news under wraps until Laura debuted her baby bump at the Mockingjay - Part 2 London premiere in spectacular fashion. Those early-morning film shoots should have Sam prepared for the night-time feeds.

Sports Illustrated model Chrissy Teigen and her chart-topping husband John Legend are every couples’ #relationshipgoals. She’s charted her pregnancy on Instagram and took to the site on Wednesday to announce the sex – alongside a stunning cover of herself on Thai Vogue, she told the world that they’ll be having a little girl next year.

“A couple minutes after this shot, John and I learned we were having our little baby girl!” Chrissy wrote of the magazine cover.

The 38-year-old presenter Cat Deeley tweeted in September, “Exciting news… Paddy and I are so happy to be expecting our first child in the spring… Lucky us.” Irish comedian Patrick - "Paddy" - Kielty said he hopes it has Cat’s looks and his accent.

No list would be complete without One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson and his fashion stylist ex Briana Jungwirth, who shocked fans with the news. The 23-year-old is due to become a dad next month, and although they’re no longer a couple, the pair said they plan to raise the baby together.

2015 Sports Personality of the Year Andy Murray has something else to celebrate next year as he will welcome his first bairn with wife Kim Sears. The two announced the news just four months after their wedding in April. Andy’s mum, tennic coach and former Strictly contestant Judy, says she’s excited to be an “active granny” –  let’s just hope she doesn’t teach him/her to dance.

The incredible story of Jane and Stephen Hawking.

Eddie Redmayne deservedly picked up awards galore, including a Bafta, an Oscar and a Golden Globe, for his role as astrophysicist Stephen Hawking in stirring biopic The Theory of Everything. But his co-star Felicity Jones warrants equal praise for her fiercely tender portrayal of Jane Wilde, the arts student who became Hawking’s first wife and whose tenacity and will arguably kept him alive in the years after he was diagnosed with motor neurone disease at the age of 21 and given just two years to live.

Redmayne’s astonishing physical transformation to depict the ravages of the disease is genuinely remarkable. To prepare for the role, he rigorously trained his body as a dancer would, but learning to shorten his muscles rather than lengthen them, so that he could hold himself in the contorted positions required to portray the progressively disabled Hawking.

It’s a very striking technical feat. But the subtler emotional transformations Redmayne and Jones display over the course of their characters’ embattled marriage are equally impressive.

By contrast, the work behind the camera is solid rather than spectacular, with director James Marsh, maker of the Oscar-winning documentary Man on Wire, doing a fine job of recreating the look and feel of 1960s, 70s and 80s Cambridge, while Anthony McCarten’s script - based on Jane’s memoir Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen - deftly conveys Hawking’s scientific breakthroughs without tangling the viewer in equations.

The film’s prime focus, however, is appropriately on the human story, making The Theory of Everything less about the workings of the universe than the workings of a remarkable marriage.

So Birdman defied the bookies and soared away with the top Oscars at last night's 87th Annual Academy Awards rather than longtime favourite Boyhood, winning Best Film and Best Director for Alejandro G Iñárritu, as well as awards for Cinematography and Screenplay. But should we be so surprised that Hollywood plumped for the movie-insider's story rather than the universal coming of age tale?

The acting awards didn't contain any surprises, however, with Eddie Redmayne holding off the challenge from Michael Keaton to win Best Actor, Julianne Moore winning Best Actress, and J K Simmons and Patricia Arquette, as widely predicted, scooping the Supporting Acting gongs.

Eddie Redmayne has vowed to take his best actor Oscar trophy to Cambridge to show Professor Stephen Hawking.

The Theory Of Everything star, whose latest win tops off huge critical acclaim for his portrayal of Hawking, said he is inspired by him.

Speaking backstage after the ceremony in Los Angeles, Eddie said: “For Stephen Hawking, the illness was of little interest to him. He lives forward, passionately.”

On making the movie, he said: “When I watch a film, I believe what I see on screen. We felt a responsibility to tell their story.”

The 33-year-old joked that the best actor win will give him some peace of mind about his future career.

“I’ve always had to fight for jobs. Retaining employment will keep me very happy,” he said.

Robert De Niro claimed it was he who gave the young actor his big break. Eddie starred alongside Matt Damon and Angelina Jolie in the 2006 movie The Good Shepherd.

Alejandro G Iñárritu’s fizzing backstage farce Birdman and Wes Anderson’s quirky period comedy The Grand Budapest Hotel lead the Oscar nomination field with nine apiece, closely followed by the gripping Alan Turing biopic The Imitation Game on eight, but despite fewer nominations (six) this year’s Best Film frontrunner is Richard Linklater’s stunning coming-of-age drama Boyhood.

This is a head to head between Linklater and Iñárritu. Both directors pulled off extraordinary technical feats with their films, but will the Oscar voters be more impressed by Linklater’s stamina, shooting his tale over a period of 12 years, or Iñárritu’s sleight of hand, making Birdman appear to have been shot in a single take? The race will go right to the wire. Bafta-winner Linklater certainly has form, but with his win at the Directors Guild of America Iñárritu will probably just sneak home first.

The Oscars typically reward actors who have put themselves through a remarkable physical transformation, especially if it involves disability – think Daniel Day-Lewis with My Left Foot – which bodes well for Redmayne’s portrayal of Stephen Hawking. They are also suckers for comeback stories, which favours Keaton’s go-for-broke performance as a frazzled movie star in Birdman, but the odds are that Redmayne will pip him and fellow Brit Benedict Cumberbatch at the post.

Julianne Moore’s moving portrayal of an academic suffering from early-onset Alzheimer’s has picked up almost every gong going this year, including awards from the Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globes. She is a dead cert to pick up her first Oscar, which means no joy for home-grown favourites Rosamund Pike and Felicity Jones.

Best known for playing Juno’s dad and Spider-Man’s boss, veteran character actor J K Simmons is electrifying as the bullying music teacher in Whiplash and is the one to beat this year. Edward Norton’s bravura turn as a narcissistic Method actor in Birdman will also pick up votes, as will Mark Ruffalo, marvellous as a wrestler in Foxcatcher. Robert Duvall makes history at the age of 84 as the oldest ever Supporting Actor nominee but looks a very unlikely winner.

This is another one-horse race, which is bad news for Meryl Streep, who picked up a record-breaking 19th acting nomination at the Oscars for Into the Woods, and for Keira Knightley, gaining a second Oscar nod for The Imitation Game. Neither has a hope of beating first-time nominee Patricia Arquette, whose deeply touching 12-year portrayal of a single mother in Boyhood makes her the clear favourite.

As he prepares to join the great and the good of the movie world at tonight’s British Academy Film Awards, Benedict Cumberbatch says that it’s been a great year for film.

The Sherlock star will join fellow Brit Eddie Redmayne and a host of American stars, such as Reece Witherspoon and Amy Adams, to find out if they have won a coveted Bafta at the annual awards ceremony in London.

The ceremony, at the Royal Opera House, is seen as a dry run for the Oscars.

Eddie and Benedict will be vying for the title of Best Actor for their roles in box office successes The Theory Of Everything and The Imitation Game respectively.

Eddie, who plays scientist Stephen Hawking, has been lauded by critics and already won a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Golden Globe for the role.

Michael Keaton, Ralph Fiennes and Jake Gyllenhaal will also be up against the British pair.

Last night, many of the stars enjoyed a pre-Bafta bash at the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's west London home Kensington Palace.

Benedict, who said it was a chance for the film industry to have some fun before the nerves kick in tonight, described British drama as being in a good place.

"Britain has had a great year across the board, across writers, producers, actors and directors. It's a very, very good time.

"The Imitation Game is a wonderful film, I'm thrilled the story has been told, and I'm very excited."

Eddie, who also attended the party, described his experience making the film and the reaction as "wonderful".

"I was pretty intimidated by (playing Stephen Hawking) but I tried to use that fear to galvanise me to work harder. Fear is a great catalyst."

Fellow nominee Ralph said award nominations are an extra boost after working hard on a film.

"You never know what's going to happen to a film, you make it, you put everything in to it, and it's a bonus when Bafta and the Academy give it a nod at the end of the year," he said.

"I've loved seeing all the other films, I love Birdman, Selma, which sadly is not being appreciated much here, I loved The Theory Of Everything, Whiplash - I could go on.

"It's a great crop of films and performances."

Eddie's on-screen wife, Felicity Jones, could triumph as well after she was nominated for the best actress award against stars including Adams and Witherspoon.

Felicity also faces competition from Gone Girl star Rosamund Pike and Julianne Moore.

Other nominations include nods for Keira Knightley and Imelda Staunton for best supporting actress and Steve Carell and Ethan Hawke for best supporting actor.

Among the other awards presented on the night is the Rising Star, which recognises the best new talent.

Unbroken actor Jack O'Connell is among those nominated along with Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who starred in last year's period drama Belle as a mixed-race aristocrat, and Margot Robbie, who first found fame playing Donna Freedman in TV soap Neighbours and has gone on to appear in The Wolf Of Wall Street.

Also in the running for the gong, formally known as the EE Rising Star Award, are Miles Teller, who has recently appeared in Whiplash, and his Divergent co-star Shailene Woodley. The award is the only Bafta decided by a public vote.

Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel heads the nominations list with 11, one ahead of Keaton's Birdman and The Theory Of Everything.

The Imitation Game, which stars Benedict as Cambridge mathematics alumnus Alan Turing, received nine nods.

All four are on the shortlist for Best Film along with Richard Linklater's Boyhood.

The battle for best British film sees the Hawking biopic face competition from '71 - a drama set in Belfast in the early years of the Troubles - and Paddington, which starred Ben Whishaw and Nicole Kidman, and was based on author Michael Bond's books about the marmalade sandwich-loving bear.

Also nominated is Pride - based on the real-life alliance between gay rights activists and striking miners in the 1980s - and science fiction thriller Under The Skin.

Redmayne, who has already won a Golden Globe, dedicated his win to those such as Hawking who live with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, for their 'triumph of spirit'.

Visibly shocked and at times emotional during his speech, he told the audience he had learned a lot when making the film.

“I would like to dedicate this award to those people around the world living with ALS, to those who have lost their lives to this brutal disease,” he said.

“In preparing to play Stephen I met many people fighting ALS, and I met their families fighting alongside them. And the courage and the bravery and the spirit, this triumph of spirit that I witnessed, blew my mind. So I’m incredibly grateful to them.”

Downton Abbey took the title of best ensemble cast in a drama series for the second time, while Birdman’s award for best ensemble cast featured English actress Andrea Riseborough.

Honorary Brit Kevin Spacey, who has been artistic director of London’s Old Vic theatre for more than a decade, won best actor in a drama series for House of Cards.

At next month’s Academy Awards Redmayne will go head to head with fellow British actor Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays code-breaker Alan Turing in The Imitation Game, as well as Steve Carell, nominated for Foxcatcher, American Sniper’s Bradley Cooper and Birdman’s Keaton.

Eddie Redmayne will go head to head with Benedict Cumberbatch in the race to be named best actor at this year's Oscars.

The pair are up against Hollywood heavyweights including Michael Keaton for the award.

Eddie's co-star in The Theory Of Everything, Felicity Jones, and Rosamund Pike were both nominated for the leading actress gong. His portrayal of Stephen Hawking has already won him a Golden Globe and he will be among the favourites to win the Oscar statuette.

The other nominees are Steve Carell and Bradley Cooper.

Felicity, who played Professor Hawking's wife in the film, and Gone Girl star Rosamund face competition from Reese Witherspoon, Julianne Moore and Marion Cotillard.

Keira Knightley, who stars alongside Benedict in The Imitation Game, is nominated for the best supporting actress award alongside Oscars veteran Meryl Streep.

The film, based on the life of pioneering scientist and code-breaker Alan Turing, is also nominated for best picture along with The Theory Of Everything, American Sniper, Birdman, Boyhood, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Selma and Whiplash.

The early odds suggest Redmayne faces competition from Keaton in the race to be named Best Actor.

The US star is 4-5 to win, just marginally ahead of Eddie at 10-11, according to bookmaker William Hill.

The firm's spokesman, Rupert Adams, said: "The betting suggests that five of the six major awards have nailed-on winners, whilst the Best Actor betting suggests a High Noon-style mano y mano between Eddie Redmayne and Michael Keaton, either of whom could draw first."

Among those who were tipped for a nomination, but missed out were actors Ralph Fiennes and David Oyelowo, both critically acclaimed for their work in The Grand Budapest Hotel and Selma respectively, and Nick Hornby whose work on the screenplay of Wild went unrecognised.

Former Friends star Jennifer Aniston also missed out despite impressing the critics with her performance in Cake.

Other notable nominations include two for French composer Alexandre Desplat, who is recognised for his original score for The Grand Budapest Hotel and The Imitation Game.

Who would have thought a silent black and white comedy would be an odds-on BAFTA favourite? Yet The Artist, French director Michel Hazanavicius’s charming valentine to the early days of Hollywood, looks set for victory, with rivals The Descendants (too low-key), Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (too drab), Drive (too violent) and The Help (too schmaltzy) all trailing in its wake.

Outstanding British Film

We Need To Talk About Kevin and Shame both won critical acclaim, but BAFTA voters will probably shy away from their dark subjects (a teen killer and a sex addict respectively). The enormously entertaining My Week with Marilyn would be a popular choice, but espionage drama Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is most likely to carry off this category.

Best Director

Martin Scorsese charmed viewers with Hugo; Lynne Ramsay’s screen version of We Need To Talk About Kevin was scarily effective; and Tomas Alfredson did an impressive job adapting John le Carré’s complex Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy; but the BAFTA prize-givers had better start practising how to pronounce the name of The Artist director Michel Hazanavicius.

Best Actor in a Leading Role

George Clooney has been a BAFTA acting nominee four times before but never a winner. With its mix of comedy and pathos, his portrayal of a grief-stricken father in The Descendants could see him finally triumph this year, but he’ll face stiff competition from Gary Oldman for his subtle performance as spymaster George Smiley in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

Best Actress in a Leading Role

Any other year, Michelle Williams’s enchanting performance as Marilyn Monroe in My Week with Marilyn might well sway BAFTA voters, but she’s almost certain to lose out to a portrayal of another famous blonde. Meryl Streep goes beyond impersonation to get under the skin of Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady and looks set to claim victory.

Best Actor in a Supporting Role

Kenneth Branagh was enjoyably waspish as Laurence Olivier in My Week with Marilyn and Jim Broadbent proved surprisingly charming as Denis Thatcher in The Iron Lady. Yet they’re likely to lose out to Beginners’ co-star 82-year-old Christopher Plummer for his moving role as an elderly father who comes out as gay at the age of 72.

Best Actress in a Supporting Role

Six-time BAFTA film acting winner Judi Dench could add to her collection for her portrayal in My Week with Marilyn of another acting legend, Dame Sybil Thorndike. This year, however, she’ll probably lose out to relative unknown Octavia Spencer for her acclaimed performance as a sassy outspoken maid in the 1960s Deep South in The Help.

Orange Rising Star

It’s toffs versus hoodie this year as Old Etonian actors Tom Hiddleston (War Horse) and Eddie Redmayne (My Week with Marilyn) go up against Kidulthood actor Adam Deacon. Thor star Chris Hemsworth and The IT Crowd’s Chris O’Dowd (Bridesmaids) are also in contention, but Hiddleston’s impressive range - from The Deep Blue Sea to Thor - should see him win.
