After taking to the skies, the director of Top Gun: Maverick is heading back to earth for a new high-octane movie with an A-list star: F1 starring Brad Pitt. The movie arrives at a time when Formula 1 racing is on the rise in popularity in the US, with this potentially going to add to the fervor for the sport.

Like he did with Top Gun: Maverick, director Joseph Kosinski got as close to the action as he could, filming during actual Grand Prix weekends for a greater level of authenticity. Combine that with the fact that the movie was filmed to be shown on IMAX screens, this has all the makings of another adrenaline-fueled big-screen thrill ride.

Brad Pitt receives top billing for the F1 cast, but the movie features a number of well-known and acclaimed actors, including Damson Idris, Kerry Condon and Javier Bardem.

Pitt is one of the biggest movie stars of the last 30 years, with classics like Seven, 12 Monkeys, Fight Club, Ocean's Eleven, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Inglourious Basterds, 12 Years a Slave and his Oscar-winning role in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Most recently, he was seen in Babylon, though he was also credited as the invisible imaginary friend in IF.

Idris is not as well known for his movie roles (though he has starred in movies like Megan Leavey and The Commuter), but he earned raves for his lead performance in the TV show Snowfall, including our team believing he deserved an Emmy nom.

Despite a list of credits that goes back to 1999, Condon has really been emerging in the last few years thanks to roles in Ray Donovan, Better Call Saul, Night Swim and her Oscar-nominated performance in The Banshees of Inisherin.

Another Oscar-winner in the cast is Bardem (No Country for Old Men). In addition to his award-winning work, Bardem is known for Dune: Part Two, Skyfall and Biutiful.

While not listed in the early promotional materials, the F1 trailer also reveals that Tobias Menzies, who has starred in Outlander, The Crown and most recently Manhunt, is also part of the cast.

The 2021 F1 Championship continues over the weekend as the title race between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen heads to an epic conclusion.

We're just a few short weeks from the first race of the 2021 F1 season. And Netflix is actually going to beat everyone to the first turn with the premiere of Season 3 of the docuseries Formula 1: Drive to Survive.

The latest season will take a look back at a year that nobody could have predicted (except, perhaps, for the folks who believed Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton would win his fourth straight title). From COVID-19 and a delayed season, to Romain Grosjean escaping a scary fiery crash at the Bahrain Grand Prix. (And that came after he broke his hand earlier in the season and didn't tell anyone. Though to be fair, the injury came from falling in the kitchen and not racing at nearly 200 mph.)

Here's the full Netflix synopsis on the 10-episode season, which premieres on March 19:

In the most dramatic season to date, fans will once again be taken behind the scenes, to witness first-hand how the drivers and teams battle it out for victory in a year like no other. Fans will be given unprecedented behind the scenes access to the 2020 season which saw the sport dramatically halted in Australia due to the COVID-19 pandemic and make a thrilling restart in Austria later that year. Intense battles, fierce rivalries, unexpected podiums and Lewis Hamilton’s incredible seventh world title will ensure the series is one of the most action packed yet.

The 2021 F1 season is scheduled to kick off March 28 with the Gulf Air Brahrain Grand Prix at the Bahrain International Circuit. In the United States, you'll be able to watch the practices, qualifying sessions and race day on ESPN or ESPN2. 

And unlike 2020, we'll see fans in the stands this year. The details will vary depending on the location — Bahrain is allowing fans in the Main Grandstand and in the Turn 1 Grandstand, but only with proof of COVID-19 vaccination, or recovery from the virus.

The F1 racing series reportedly is in "active" talks with Amazon to stream Grand Prix races, the Financial Times has reported. That's perhaps overselling things a bit, as companies talk all the time.

And Amazon apparently is just one of the options being discussed, according to Chase Carey, the outgoing F1 chief exec, who told the FT the series had had "“substantive discussions . . . [with] Amazon and all the global digital platforms."

Those last five words are doing a lot of work there, too. "All the global digital platforms" can mean a lot of things. First is that there actually aren't all that many truly "global" digital platforms, particularly when it comes to sports. Amazon would be an obvious option, and it's already streaming some NFL games and Premier League matches. Assuming distribution rights would cross borders, Amazon Prime Video also is a global player, as opposed to something like, say, ESPN+, which is rooted in the United States. (ESPN currently has the rights to F1 races in the U.S.) And Sky has the broadcast rights in the UK, but that also comes without a global footprint.

Amazon also has the hardware ecosystem to go along with its streaming offering. Amazon Fire TV is the No. 1 platform globally, and No. 2 in the United States. (Roku is tops in the U.S., and No. 2 globally.) 

Also unclear is what that could mean for F1's own streaming service, F1TV.

Despite the struggles of 2020, not even the global pandemic could slow the popularity of F1 racing. Sure, the season was shortened significantly — and the FT notes that the series saw operating losses of $363 million in the first three quarters of 2020. But the drama remained high — even as Lewis Hamilton secured his seventh series title with a few races left to go, and then he missed the penultimate event because of COVID-19.
