Hollyoaks star Charlie Clapham has spoken about the downside of being on the TV in everyone's living rooms each day – you become a target for abuse.

Charlie, who plays Freddie Roscoe in the Channel 4 soap, told What's on TV: "The other week I got told I was a lookalike for Freddie and that I was too ugly to be on TV. Their daughter was going, 'Dad – it's the real Freddie!' I said, 'Don't worry babes, he's had a few drinks...'"  

Charlie has had to learn ways of dealing with being in the public eye since he debuted on Hollyoaks in 2013. "I've had to [develop a thick skin] really. The TV world is very body conscious, the way I speak, the way I look, the way I dress. Certain things I take on, and just go, 'Yeah I'm going to put my effort into that', but certain times you do become self-conscious. You have to kind of have a laugh with it. If someone has a go, I go, 'Fantastic! I don't really have an opinion on you.'"

He has some advice for anyone starting out in the ultra visible world of soap acting...

"I always go straight back home to Leicester, see my mates, see my family, and I recommend any young person starting in a show like this, keep that anchor," he said. "I'm very lucky, my parents are still together, I've got a great group of friends from school, they take the mick out of me... And that's good, for every person on Twitter that tells you you're amazing and they love you, you get the odd person who wants to says something not so great.

"So you've got to take the rough with the smooth, but if you go back to where you come from, with the mates who've always known you, that  can give you a great grounding and that's what I stand by."

Charlie was nominated as Best Actor at the recent British Soap Awards, an honour which was won by Emmerdale's Danny Miller.

The last time we saw Freddie Roscoe, he was seen in the boot of Trevor’s car after “Gloved Hand Killer” Lindsey had apparently killed him. With the help of sister Kim, she dumped the body in Trevor’s car, thereby putting the Hollyoaks bad boy in the frame for murder. 

When Freddie was discovered in the boot of the car, DS Thorpe spotted that he was still alive, but viewers were led to believe that the cop had left the Roscoe brother to die rather than take the opportunity to bring him back from the brink. However, in a shock twist, revealed in last night’s New Year’s Eve episode, it turns out Freddie is actually alive and well – in Brighton!

New Hollyoaks resident Ellie Nightingale was in a club when she got flirty with Freddie, who introduced himself as Mark, not realising that he’s actually one of the infamous Roscoe brothers.  

“Freddie’s been placed into witness protection and he's been waiting out until they find the Gloved Hand Killer," says Charlie Clapham, who plays him. "Of course he has no memory."

Soon DS Thorpe emerged from the shadows and brought Freddie’s flirting and partying to an abrupt halt by breaking the news about the death of his brother Ziggy.

"Will Freddie be returning to Hollyoaks? I think so,” says Charlie. “He's very upset about the loss of Ziggy; it's come as a complete shock. And it's awoken his primal need to some back to see his family. "

Meanwhile, back in Hollyoaks, Lindsey pulled out her syringe and blue gloves to finish off Mercedes, but was stopped in her tracks by Theresa. With her murder plan foiled, Lindsey took Mercedes’ phone and sent a hurtful text to Joe. So when she got home and found him down in the dumps after receiving the text, it wasn’t long before they were tearing each other’s clothes off! 

Back in Brighton, Freddie borrows Ellie’s phone and called Lindsey, but of course she was too busy getting passionate with her ex that she didn’t notice her phone was ringing…

What will Lindsey do when she discovers the man she thought she had killed isn’t dead after all?

Viewers watched Freddie apparently murdered by wife Lindsey Butterfield, AKA The Gloved Hand Killer, but his appearance at the end confirmed what fans had suspected – that he’d managed to survive the trip in the back of gangster Trevor Royle’s car boot.

Lindsey, however, hasn’t finished her deadly streak, turning her needle on Mercedes McQueen in the clip.

The trailer also sees a distraught Maxine Minniver agreeing to help terminally ill Patrick end his life, before it is revealed to the viewers that he plans to frame her for murder.

Viewers will share John Paul McQueen’s nerves as he waits to see if Ste Hay will turn up under the arch on Christmas Day or pursue a future with Harry Thompson, as Ste’s love life comes under the spotlight.

Freddie's under arrest on suspicion of murder in Hollyoaks!

Hollyoaks hunk Charlie Clapham has revealed getting a role on the show was like playing at the World Cup.

And the 22-year-old actor, who plays Freddie Roscoe on the Channel 4 soap, confessed he was so excited about the part that he ran around his flat in the buff.

“I ran around naked in my apartment when I found out! It was like I’d scored a goal at the World Cup,” he revealed.

Charlie, who joined the show in May 2013, following roles in The Bill and Kick-Ass 2, has seen his character survive a stabbing, been involved in two killer cover-ups and is in the midst of a love triangle.

“Sometimes I get too involved. I genuinely care about what happens to Fred. I read the script and think, ‘Oh Fred, please don’t do that. I know you fancy her, but just please, don’t do that’,” he said.

The actor also revealed he would like his alter-ego to befriend murderer Trevor Royle (Greg Wood).

“I think there’s an interesting friendship to be had between Freddie and Trevor. They’d make great companions, but the show never allows for it,” he said.

“I’d like to see them getting up to mischief one Friday night while Trev’s girlfriend Grace is away!”

Hollyoaks star Charlie Clapham has revealed he and his on-screen brothers had to wear bibs to keep their suits clean for the Christmas episodes.

One of the Roscoes is set to tie the knot at Christmas, but it is being kept top secret whether it will be mum Sandy or one of her sons Joe or Freddie.

Charlie, who plays Freddie, revealed: "When you're filming, especially the Christmas period, things can get a little bit hectic and you have to eat in the middle of it all, and you've got to look smart.

"And it is quite funny when we're all dressed up for an occasion, all the brothers, even lunch time is just one big hazard. We all like to eat quite a lot, especially me and my little brother Charlie (Wernham, who plays Robbie Roscoe). And we don't half get some food all over the place and costume are just screaming at us! So some days they just wrap a towel around us!"

The actor was keeping quiet about whether it is Freddie who ties the knot with Sinead O'Connor. But he did reveal: "It's a bizarre relationship. They need each other for pretty much the same reason and yet their love is completely and utterly different, and it's a strange relationship. But it's been through quite a lot so I wouldn't assume that Fred and Sinead part ways any time soon.

"I certainly think this Christmas will be another test for them."

Sinead (Stephanie Davis) is set to try and expose Freddie's secret feelings for his brother Joe's partner Lindsey Butterfield (Sophie Austin).

Charlie said of Freddie and Lindsey: "I think just the notion that maybe someone admires you, someone that's been close to you, as soon as you have secrets with someone, you're not telling me that that thought doesn't flash through your head. It doesn't mean she's in love with Fred. But as the weeks go by something has to develop there."
