Gavin & Stacey star Rob Brydon is swapping Barry Island for the home of country music in a new BBC Two series.

Rob, who famously played Uncle Bryn in the hit comedy which ended at Christmas, will journey around America's southern states to discover country music's origins and what led to its recent global explosion.

Rob once topped the charts with his own take on a country classic "(Barry) Islands in the Stream", with Gavin & Stacey co-star Ruth Jones. Released in 2009 the track for Comic Relief also featured Tom Jones and Robin Gibb.

He says: "I've always loved country music but never really delved too deeply into it. The current resurgence means it's the perfect time to head over to Nashville and find out more. I can't wait to immerse myself in this fascinating world of music."

In a photo released for the series (main picture), Rob can be seen posing in his country and western gear outside a restaurant called the Honky Tonk Grill. The three-part series is called Rob Brydon's Honky Tonk Road Trip.

The BBC teases that "he'll be meeting the stars, hanging out with locals and immersing himself in the way of life".

His road trip begins in Nashville, Tennessee, which is celebrating 100 years of The Grand Ole Opry — the city's music show. Then he heads to Kentucky and onto the Appalachian Mountains, where he'll learn how British settlers brought their traditional ballads and instruments that influenced the country music sound.

He also visits Alabama, where the Would I Lie to You? host plays homage to Hank Williams, whose honky tonk style made him the biggest country star of the 1940s and Bristol, Tennessee, where he'll meet Carlene Carter, granddaughter of Carter Family founding member and country music pioneer "Mother" Maybelle Carter, before heading to meet Dolly Parton's niece Heidi in Dollywood.

Each episode is an hour long and the BBC also revealed it's making Rebel Country, a "feature-length documentary exploring a new breed of authentic stars who are rewriting the rules and challenging the culture of country music".

The BBC hasn't yet said when either Rob's show or Rebel Country will air (see our TV Guide for full listings).

Gavin & Stacey star Robert Wilfort, best known for having a certain fishing trip, looks almost unrecognisable in pictures from his new role in Father Brown season 12.

Over 19 million viewers tuned in over Christmas to watch Robert playing Jason West in the final ever episode of the beloved sitcom, with many viewers hoping they’d finally find out what happened on Jason's fishing trip with Bryn (Rob Brydon).

From a fishing mystery, he's now in a murder mystery as he guest stars in a new episode of Father Brown, airing on BBC One on Friday, March 7 at 2 pm.

Robert guest stars as William Fitzgibbon, a respectable Professor of Maths at Gloucester University. His wife, Martha (Nicola Stephenson) is a member of a local sewing circle, whose other members include battleaxe Judith Skelton (Beyond Paradise's Felicity Montagu) and Violet Goodfellow (Naomi Radcliffe), the wife of Sergeant Goodfellow (John Burton).

Sergeant Goodfellow describes William as his "fellow sewing circle widower" and they hold their own meetings in the pub. But then Brenda overhears William and another member of the sewing circle, Catherine Glover (Carlyss Peer), holding a secret conversation that implies they're lovers. "It's killing me the guilt and that's why I'm going to do the right thing," she says. William begs her not to say anything but she insists that she will.

So, when Catherine is found stabbed to death William becomes the obvious murder suspect. Chief Inspector Sullivan (Tom Chambers) takes him in for questioning, but as ever Father Brown isn't as quick to leap to conclusions. Might someone else be responsible for Catherine's death?

Meanwhile, Robert Wilfort, whose other credits include Grace, Wolf Hall and Vera, was recently in the news for donating a signed copy of the script of the Gavin & Stacey finale to charity.

Call the Midwife, BBC One, 8 pm

The perennially soul-stirring period drama is raising the festive bar with a dazzling pair of Christmas specials! Both episodes are jam-packed (or should that be mincemeat-packed?!), as Christmas time 1969 finds the team dealing with several births and a flu outbreak. Meanwhile, a convict on the run causes chaos, and a homeless family needs assistance. Trixie (Helen George) brings seasonal joy, however, when she pops over from America, and romance is in store for Nancy (Megan Cusack). Plus there’s a funfair, a carol concert and a hotly-contested mince pie competition! But the nail-biting final scenes of this opener will leave you on tenterhooks over your turkey sandwiches before the conclusion on Boxing Day…

Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, BBC One, 6.10 pm

Cheese-loving inventor Wallace and his long-suffering dog, Gromit find themselves targeted by their vengeful nemesis, Feathers McGraw, in this brand new joyous and action-packed feature-length film. When Wallace invents Norbot, a "smart-gnome" that can help with household tasks, penguin Feathers, now languishing in prison, seizes the opportunity to remotely hack it. Norbot (brilliantly voiced by Inside Number 9’s Reece Shearsmith) is soon running amok in the neighbourhood and turns from a helpful gnome to a demonic criminal. Expect all the usual attention to detail, gorgeous humour and fun for all the family to enjoy from award-winning creator Nick Park and listen out for the familiar tones of Peter Kay, Lenny Henry and Diane Morgan who are among the famous cast lending their voices in Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl.

Tiddler, BBC One, 2.35 pm

Continuing its Christmas tradition of animating a beloved book from author Julia Donaldson and illustrator Axel Scheffler, the BBC reels in holiday cheer with the tale of a tiny fish who has a big imagination. Produced by Magic Light Pictures, the half-hour special follows Tiddler, a storytelling fish who concocts elaborate excuses for why he’s late for school every day, from meeting mermaids to flying with rays. But when he faces real danger in a fisherman's net, will anyone believe the fish who cried wolf? Ted Lasso’s Hannah Waddingham narrates, while Lolly Adefope and Rob Brydon are among the voice-cast. Fin-credible!

Doctor Who, BBC One, 5.10 pm

Nicola Coughlan (Bridgerton) finds herself confronted with danger, dinosaurs and the Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) as she guest stars in the festive outing of Doctor Who, Joy to the World. She plays shy and retiring Joy, who’s about to spend Christmas alone in a very pink London hotel room when a Silurian makes a surprise entrance through a door to the Time Hotel, and she suddenly finds herself thrown into an adventure involving the Doctor’s old arms manufacturer enemy Villengard! Cue a mission for Joy and the Doctor to save the history of Christmas. But can they escape when they find themselves thrown into the jaws of a T-Rex?

The Gavin & Stacey Christmas special 2024 might finally reveal what happened on Bryn and Jason's infamous fishing trip while the makers revealed a first-look picture.

The final ever episode of the beloved sitcom, which will air on Christmas Day on BBC One, will also reveal if Smithy (James Corden) accepted Nessa's (Ruth Jones) marriage proposal. The story sees Bryn (Rob Brydon) packing the Picasso in readiness for a trip to Essex, while Stacey (Joanna Page) and Gavin (Mathew Horne) are looking for new ways to spice up their seventeen-year marriage.

Teasing the plot, the makers say that Gwen (Melanie Walters) is behaving most strangely while Nessa's started a new business venture, and Neil the Baby is about to begin an apprenticeship with his dad.

The makers add: "Over in Billericay Pam is stressing out at the prospect of playing hostess, not helped by a newly retired Mick practicing his golf swings in the living room and there have been more ups and downs in Pete and Dawn's relationship.

"Join us on the journey to Barry and Billericay as we catch up with the Shipmans and the Wests for the very last time and maybe find out what exactly did happen on that fishing trip."

There have been a million theories about what happened on the fishing trip, so fans would love to be put out of their misery and at last get an answer. We will also get to see whether Smithy accepted Nessa's marriage proposal. The 2019 Christmas special, shown nearly five years ago, ended with Nessa getting down on one knee after telling Smithy: "You know you're all right as you are Smithy. I won't lie, you're not everyone's cup of tea. But at the end of the day, when all said and done you're tidy… I knows it's been complicated, you and me… but I love you… no Smithy, you’re not listening. I know it’s weird like, but I do, with all my heart. So… will you marry me?”

The 90-minute special is probably the Christmas TV highlight the BBC has this year. Although, as our Christmas TV guide shows, there's plenty more to enjoy including an Outnumbered Christmas special, Don Gilet's debut as the new detective in the Death in Paradise Christmas special 2024 and not one but two Call the Midwife Christmas specials.

Larry Lamb, who plays Mick Shipman in the comedy series Gavin & Stacey has hinted that this year's Gavin & Stacey Christmas Special might not be the last epsiode after all. 

While appearing on Good Morning Britain today, Thursday, October 10, to talk about the show's wrap party now that filming for what is said to be the final ever epsiode has come to an end, Larry has given fans a glimmer of hope that there could be more capers from Barry Island. 

Larry apologised to host Susanna Read for having a tickle in this throat after attending the Gavin & Stacey wrap party. He said: “Well they did have a big party and James and Ruth really pushed the boat out. It was wonderful.” 

When asked about whether this festive offering really was the final ever epsiode of the show, Larry teased: “What you want to do is get James and Ruth on here and question them because that’s where it all comes from.” 

Susanna pushed: “You’d love another one, wouldn’t you?" to whch Larry responded: “Yes, you become a family.” 

Reflecting on the last five weeks of recording for the much anticipated Christmas special, Larry continued: “It was a trip down memory lane. Because suddenly there we are, and we’re facing the fact that effectively this is the end of this adventure - it’s the end of this journey and it was so emotional."

The last episode, also a Christmas special, went out nearly five years ago, picking up an audience of over 18 million viewers. And now fans are waiting with baited breath to see how that cliffhanger will pan out.

Sadly, it will be the final ever episode of the beloved sitcom, but it promises to be 90 minutes of pure joy for fans.

Well, they say it's the final ever episode but given its creators, James Corden and Ruth Jones aren't that old, they might at some point be tempted to make another episode. But for now they’re saying it's the final one.

The BBC press office confirmed the worst kept secret in showbiz earlier this year that the comedy was coming back in a tweet, saying: "We'll have: A chicken bhuna, lamb bhuna, prawn bhuna, mushroom rice, bag of chips, keema naan, nine poppadoms and the last ever episode of Gavin and Stacey!!! Coming this Christmas Day on @BBCOne and @BBCiPlayer”.

Talking about her feelings making the final ever episode, Ruth Jones says: "It was a mixture of excitement, nostalgia and sadness. Sad of course because this is the last time these characters will ever be on screen again, but so exciting to bring them to life again. And nostalgic because we’d be on set with the cast and we’d go down memory lane remembering the early episodes. We often reminisced about Maggie John [who played Doris] who's no longer with us but we felt she was in spirit, especially when we were on Trinity Street.

"It’s always so enjoyable to be in the room writing with James. We act out the characters when we write — I love playing Bryn and Stacey and James does a great Pamelarr!"

Plot

The 2019 Christmas special, the last episode screened, ended on one hell of a cliffhanger. In the final moments, Nessa and Smithy enjoyed a smoke and smiled about Neil being 12 soon. It wasn't quite Bridgerton, but Nessa did make one big heartfelt speech: "You know you're all right as you are Smithy. I won't lie, you're not everyone's cup of tea. But at the end of the day, when all said and done you're tidy… I knows it's been complicated, you and me… but I love you… no Smithy, you’re not listening. I know it’s weird like, but I do, with all my heart. So… will you marry me?"

Teasing what happens in the festive episode, the makers say: "It's five years since we left Nessa down on one knee declaring her love for Smithy and asking him to marry her. And a lot has happened since then.

"In Barry, Bryn’s packing the Picasso in readiness for a trip to Essex; Stacey and Gavin are looking for new ways to spice up their seventeen-year marriage and Gwen is behaving most strangely. Nessa’s started a new business venture and Neil the Baby’s about to begin an apprenticeship with his dad.

Sheridan Smith is returning as Smithy's sister Rudi. It's the first time she's played the part since 2010. Plus Julia Davis is back as Dawn with Adrian Scarborough back as Pete.

Gavin & Stacey Christmas special 2024 behind the scenes

Filming took place over five weeks from September 2024 at locations across the Vale of Glamorgan. James Corden and Ruth Jones have written the special. Christie Gernon, who's directed the series before, is the director of the Christmas special. She's also worked on comedy classics like One Foot in the Grave and Absolutely Fabulous.

The rumors were true! Gavin & Stacey is coming back for one last laugh later in 2024. 

After years of speculation, the BBC has revealed that the smash-hit comedy series will be making a comeback this festive season — but there is bad news for fans as it has also been confirmed this will be the last ever outing for the show. 

On the morning of Friday, May 3, the BBC press office shared a social media post confirming that Gavin & Stacey would be coming back to BBC One and BBC iPlayer for its last-ever episode on Christmas Day.

The post reads: "We'll have: A chicken bhuna, lamb bhuna, prawn bhuna, mushroom rice, bag of chips, keema naan, nine poppadoms and the last ever episode of Gavin and Stacey!!! Coming this Christmas Day on @BBCOne and @BBCiPlayer".

The post was accompanied by a photo of creators James Corden and Ruth Jones holding up a title page for the script. You can see it below:

A Gavin & Stacey Christmas comeback was most recently teased in February 2024, when Deadline reported that Corden and Jones were planning to film a new Christmas special over the summer, to bring it to our screens over the festive season. 

You might remember that co-creator Ruth Jones was quick to issue a brutal Gavin & Stacey update right away, claiming she had no idea where the 'hilarious' rumor came from during an appearance on the Oliver Callan Show on RTÉ Radio One.

At the time, Jones commented: "I just find it so hilarious. Apparently, there's a bidding war going on between the BBC and Netflix. And I love it as it has 'a source says'. You know, who is this source? Where does this stuff come from? 

"James and I went for lunch — when he got back from America — and we got papped, and the next thing was ‘Oh, they must be doing more Gavin & Stacey! Which is lovely! It's lovely that people love it and they're so desperate for it. Imagine if it was the opposite and they were like, 'Oh god! They're not bringing that back?'

"So it's suddenly a rumor. I don't know what to say. All I can say is, if there was something to say, on that front, James and I would happily announce it. We would. But some random journalist, who's decided to write this story... I'm lost for words", she added. 

Looks like those rumors weren't as far-fetched after all!

Gavin & Stacey's last ever episode will air on Christmas Day 2024.

Gavin & Stacey star Joanna Page has opened up about whether there will be a Gavin & Stacey reunion in the future. 

The actor teased the prospect of another instalment of the BBC show in a recent interview, saying that "it would be so lovely" to work on the show again. 

Gavin & Stacey was last aired during a Christmas special back in 2019. The episode saw show veteran Nessa proposing to Smithy, leaving the show on a cliffhanger.

The BBC sitcom was last on our screens back on Christmas Day in 2019, with the screen fading to black just as Nessa proposed to Smithy.

Joanna Page hinted that another special might be on the horizon. 

“[A reunion] would be so lovely,” she told The Sun. “When we all first started it was like an instant family. We’re all still constantly in touch with each other, my gosh we send each other so many messages.

“We struggle to even make time for our own families. But then I agree, we have got to find out what Smithy says to Nessa."

Joanna also discussed what it's been like to work with her on-screen in-laws during a new travel project.

The actor collaborated with fellow Gavin & Stacey co-stars Alison Steadman and Larry Lamb for a new travel show that sees the pair journey from Barry to Billericay, with Joanna providing the voiceover.

“Alison and Larry have just done a show where they're going from Barry to Billericay and I’ve done the voiceover and I found it really difficult to voice because I was watching them and I kept missing my cue,” she told The Sun.

“I was going ‘look at them, they're like my mum and dad. I couldn't take it seriously because I was smiling and laughing.”

Joanna's comments coincide with James Corden's return to the UK after his stint on The Late Late Show - watch this space!

Joanna Page has revealed she has teamed up with fellow Gavin & Stacey stars for an exciting new project.

Gavin & Stacey hasn't been on our screens since the 2019 Christmas special, which left fans on a shocking cliffhanger, and people have been hopeful that the Barry residents will return for another round.

While we don't have confirmation on more episodes just yet, Stacey actress Joanna Page has confirmed she's teaming up with her on-screen in-laws Larry Lamb and Alison Steadman, who play Gavin’s parents Mick and Pam Shipman.

She is providing the voiceover for a new travel series which will see the duo exploring everywhere from Barry to Billericay, with Joanna providing essential commentary throughout their travels.

Speaking about the show to The Sun, Joanna said: “Alison and Larry have just done a show where they're going from Barry to Billericay and I’ve done the voiceover and I found it really difficult to voice because I was watching them and I kept missing my cue.

“And I was going ‘Look at them, they're like my mum and dad!' I couldn't take it seriously because I was smiling and laughing."

We don't know much about the upcoming travelogue just yet but we'll be sure to keep you updated with any information like an air date or what to expect.

Even though it's not a Gavin & Stacey spin-off, Joanna Page added that she would definitely be up for some sort of reunion in the future.

She added: "That would be so lovely. When we all first started it was like an instant family. We’re all still constantly in touch with each other, my gosh we send each other so many messages. We struggle to even make time for our own families."

However, despite the busy schedule, Joanna is in agreement about the Christmas Day cliffhanger and said: "We have GOT to find out what Smithy says to Nessa!"

Joanna Page is currently starring in ITV's Cooking With The Stars season 3 where she is paired up with Michael Caines MBE. The series is now airing so we'll have to wait and see how she gets on in the kitchen!

Ruth Jones has made it pretty clear that Gavin & Stacey had its last laugh back in 2019 and won't be coming back again.

In an interview with The Independent, co-writer Ruth Jones — who is well-known for playing Stacey's best friend, Nessa in the hit BBC sitcom — made it plain that she has no plans to bring it back.

In response to questions about bringing the series back once again, Ruth said: "It's not coming back", adding: "I'm really hugely complimented that people love it so much. But it is quite an extraordinary thing...it's almost like you mention the words Gavin and Stacey and people assume it's back", firmly concluding "but it's not".

Later in the interview, Ruth said that she was "sure" that she would write something else with co-writer James Corden: "I'm sure, at some point, James and I will write something together. But it won't be Gavin & Stacey. Certainly, when he's back in the UK, I would have thought we would try and get together and write again because it was such fun to do that."

This interview comes just a few months after James Corden had previously teased that Gavin & Stacey might return in the future. Following the news that Corden was leaving The Late Late Show and returning to the UK, he addressed the question on BBC Radio 2. There, he said the final decision over bringing it back lay with Ruth, as he felt she would know if and when Gavin & Stacey should be back.

"I wish I could say it's up to me. The best thing about Gavin & Stacey is that it's Ruth and I, if I'm being completely honest, her judgment is exceptional... She'll know when it's right and together we'll figure it out. If — IF that ever happens. But I do think it's a big 'if'. I don't think it's a 'when'", he added.

The show originally ran from 2007 to 2010 and won three Baftas over its three series. It then returned for a one-off Gavin & Stacey Christmas special in 2019, which ended with the cliffhanger of Nessa proposing to Smithy (James Corden's character). Fans have been desperate to find out what Smithy said ever since; sadly, Ruth's comments make it sound like we won't ever get the definitive answer.

James Corden has teased that he's interested in reviving Gavin & Stacey for a new special but has insisted that the decision isn't just his to make.

When James Corden announced that he would be leaving The Late Late Show behind and returning to the UK earlier this year, many Gavin & Stacey fans started to wonder whether we'd be seeing any more of the iconic BBC comedy series.

Now, it seems that more Gavin & Stacey could potentially be on the cards. Speaking on the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show, the star teased that he will have more time to work on more TV projects after he leaves The Late Late Show. 

He's also planning on spending some time with the sitcom's co-creator, Ruth Jones, whom he said has the final decision on whether the pair decide to continue the show.

James Corden said: "I wish I could say it's up to me. The best thing about Gavin & Stacey is that it's Ruth and I and, if I'm being completely honest, her judgement is exceptional.

"Look, I am going to have a bit more free time as of sort of next year and that will open some time for us to just be together, I hope", he commented, later adding that "she'll know when it's right and together we'll figure it out. If — IF that ever happens. But I do think it's a big 'if'. I don't think it's a 'when'."

The last time we saw the hilarious sitcom on our TV screens was for the Gavin & Stacey Christmas special in 2019, which came along a decade after the show originally ended after the third season and ended on quite a cliffhanger. Ruth Jones's character Nessa confessed her feelings to Smithy (played by James Corden) and getting down on one knee to propose to him...but the episode cut to black and the credits rolled before we got to hear Smithy's response!

The special pulled in record ratings when it was revived, with more than 17 million UK fans tuning in to see what the characters had been up to during their time away from our screens.

During the interview, James also commented on the show's enduring success, saying: "I'm touched every time I get here when people ask about it. It's amazing. It's incredible how people care about those characters in the show. It's so great and I realise the ending of that special does very definitely tease something else."

Larry Lamb suggests Gavin & Stacey could return for another holiday special later down the line.

Gavin & Stacey surprised fans when the hit BBC sitcom returned for a festive reunion in 2019.

The one-off episode became the most-watched Christmas show of the entire decade. This led the BBC to announce the show would return "one day".

The most frustrating part of the festive special was its cliffhanger ending. Nessa (Ruth Jones) shocked everyone when she proposed to Smithy (James Corden) at the end of the episode. Sadly, it cut to the credits before we got to see Smithy's answer.  

With such a surprise ending left unanswered, fans have been disappointed by Gavin & Stacey’s absence in the BBC’s Christmas TV line-up this year. However, we might still find out whether Smithy said yes after all! 

According to Larry Lamb, who plays Mick Shipman in the show, more Gavin & Stacey is still very possible. Speaking to The Telegraph, Lamb said: "After how well the Christmas special went down last year, it’s highly unlikely there won’t be more." He explained, though, that he can't confirm when Gavin & Stacey will be back; "when it’ll be, that’s up to James [Corden], Ruth Jones and the BBC."

Lamb also joked: "I just hope they knock another one out before I’m dead. That or they can start at the graveside."

This isn’t the first time Lamb has hinted at the show's return. Lamb told OK! Magazine earlier this year: "You can be more or less certain that, sooner or later, there will be more".

Lamb is not the only actor who has teased  Gavin & Stacey's return. Addressing some rumours about the show's return, Matt Horne, who plays Gavin, said: "We left it on a cliffhanger and I don’t think it would be right to leave it there".

The 2019 Gavin & Stacey Christmas special will be repeated on Christmas Eve at 8:40pm on BBC1.

What is Gavin and Stacey season 1 about?

Comedy legends James Corden and Ruth Jones created the much-loved sitcom, which follows a long-distance romance.

The main characters Gavin (Mathew Horne) and Stacey (Joanna Page) fall in love over the phone, as he's based in Essex and she's in Wales.

The series follows their long-distance romance, meeting in person, and each other's families. Can these families from very different backgrounds get along?

As for Nessa, she's Stacey's oldest friend and has a surprising amount of celebrity connections which she frequently name-drops in conversation. A lot of these references make for some seriously hilarious moments.

Mathew Horne and Joanna Page

Long-distance couple Gavin and Stacey are played by Mathew Horne and Joanna Page. Despite never meeting, they fall in love over the phone and realize they have a lot in common.

When they finally meet after a year of speaking on the phone, it's love at first sight for the pair. The couple's parents have also become fan favorites, particularly Gavin's mum Pam.

Larry Lamb and Alison Steadman

Pam and Mick are played by Larry Lamb and Alison Steadman, with Pam's character being one of the most quotable in the series.

She's known for being very eccentric and overprotective over her son.

Mick is a lot more down-to-earth meaning his personality sometimes clashes with Pam's, with hilarious results.

Rob Brydon and Melanie Walters

The all-star cast continues, with Would I Lie to You? presenter Rob Brydon playing Stacey's uncle Bryn.

Bryn is a much-loved character, due to his naivety and generally bubbly nature. He's very caring towards Stacey but has a frosty relationship with his nephew due to a mysterious "fishing trip" incident. Bryn is Stacey's uncle on her dad's side, who passed away sometime before the series starts. Bryn now cares for widowed Gwen and her daughter Stacey. 

Stacey's mum Gwen is a cheerful character who loves her daughter and is known for making omelets!

Sheridan Smith

Finally, Sheridan Smith is a series regular as Smithy's younger sister Ruth "Rudi" Smith. She's immature but kind and also likes to be called Smithy.

Gavin and Stacey ran for 3 seasons, as well as a 2019 Christmas Special which was set 10 years later.
