Where to watch the Golden Globes 2025 red carpet?

You won't be able to tune into the red-carpet glamour on CBS, as the network will be airing football until the Golden Globes 2025 ceremony broadcast begins at 8pm Eastern Time.

Instead, Variety and Entertainment Tonight have partnered for the Globes' official red-carpet pre-show, which will air digitally beginning at 6:30 pm ET / 3:30 pm PT on GoldenGlobes.com, ETOnline.com and Variety's website and social platforms, as well as on Paramount Plus. The Globes’ official pre-show will feature exclusive footage of attendees arriving at the Beverly Hilton as well as interviews hosted by Variety journalist Marc Malkin and Entertainment Tonight correspondent Rachel Smith.

And after taking a year off, E! will return to cover the Globes' red carpet with Live From E!: Golden Globes beginning at 6pm ET (3pm PT) on E! (For those that cut the cord to cable, E! is available to watch on live-TV streaming services such as Sling TV, Hulu with Live TV, Fubo and YouTube TV.) The special will be cohosted by Access Hollywood's Zuri Hall and comedian Heather McMahan and will feature interviews with the night's top nominees as they arrive on the red carpet, as well as a sartorial rundown of who is wearing what.

Along with this year's nominees, pre-show coverage will likely include interviews with the 2025 Golden Globes host, comedian Nikki Glaser, as well as high-profile presenters like Elton John, Glenn Close, Jennifer Coolidge, Colin Farrell, Anya Taylor-Joy, Salma Hayek, Sarah Paulson, Kerry Washington, Rachel Brosnahan and Ke Huy Quan, among others. How to watch the Golden Globes 2025 in the US

The 82nd Annual Golden Globes will air live on Sunday, January 5, at 8pm Eastern Time (5pm Pacific Time) on CBS.

To watch on cable, you can tune in using the main CBS channel, which many cable packages will include as it's a major news channel. If you don't have access to it, several live TV streaming services include it in their bundles: DirecTV, Fubo, Hulu with Live TV and YouTube TV all include it on various plans.

Cord-cutters have cheaper options for watching the Golden Globes than signing up for a cable replacement service though. The awards will also be streamed on the streaming service Paramount Plus for all subscribers on the $12.99-per-month Paramount Plus with Showtime tier. You can use this to stream on any smart device like a phone or tablet.

If you don't need to watch the show live, it'll also be available to watch on demand from Monday, January 8 for all Paramount Plus users, even those on the $7.99-per-month Essential plan. This is the cheapest option, although you will have to avoid spoilers online for a few hours.

How to watch the Golden Globes 2025 in the UK

Unfortunately, there's no official way to watch a Golden Globes 2025 stream in the UK. Though UK-based fans will be able to see clips from the event and winner announcements on the Globes' website and social media channels, Paramount Plus will not be streaming in that country.

How to watch the Golden Globes 2025 in Australia

Aussie fans will be able to tune into tonight's telecast live on free-to-air TV in Australia on Channel 10. Due to the time difference, obviously, the ceremony will start midday on Monday, January 6, with a repeat showing set for 7:30pm AEDT that evening.

The entire ceremony will also be available to stream online for free on the network's 10 Play streaming service later in the day, beginning at 4:30pm AEDT.

How to watch the Golden Globes 2025 everywhere else

In regards to the latter, I’m planting my flag on who I think will be the big winners of the night with my official Golden Globe 2025 predictions right here.

Below you’ll find my picks for all 27 categories at this year’s Golden Globes across both movies and TV. The Globes have a history of being a bit harder to predict as they are made up of primarily international journalists, and after a recent shakeup among the voting body many are still trying to get a feel for any tendencies they have. But, at the end of the day this is just a fun exercise on how I think the night may go.

Golden Globe 2025 movie predictions

Best Actress — Comedy: Mikey Madison, Anora

In a stacked category (Demi Moore and Cynthia Erivo loom large as threats), I’m going with Mikey Madison for Anora. She’s been the breakout star on the awards circuit this year for her acclaimed performance as a sex worker whose impulsive marriage to the son of a Russian oligarch quickly becomes extremely complicated. I think she continues that run here.

Actual winner: Demi Moore

Best Actor — Comedy: Sebastian Stan, A Different Man

While Sebastian Stan’s movies have been a little less seen this year by the general public, critics and awards bodies have been signaling it out as the best year of his career. While Jesse Eisenberg is his big competition in my opinion, I think Stan takes the Globe here for A Different Man.

Actual winner: Sebastian Stan

Best Actress — Drama: Angelina Jolie, Maria

While it would be cool to see Pamela Anderson take home a trophy for her comeback role in The Last Showgirl or a real wild card like Fernanda Torres for the international movie I’m Still Here, Angelina Jolie is magnificent as Maria Callas in Maria and deserves her laurels for her first on-screen performance since 2021.

Best Actor — Drama: Timothée Chalamet, A Complete Unknown

Like Best Actress — Comedy, Best Actor — Drama is a category where I could see just about anyone winning. However, I was blown away by Timothée Chalamet’s performance as Boy Dylan in A Complete Unknown and think the voting body of the Globes will have been as well, opting to anoint the young star with his first ever major award win.

Best Supporting Actress: Zoe Saldana, Emilia Perez

This one could come down to two musical performances — Ariana Grande in Wicked and Zoe Saldana in Emilia Perez. I’m going with Saldana though, who sings, dances and brings an emotional heft to the movie musical that deserves recognition. Though to be honest, I would not be mad if Isabella Rossellini pulled the upset for Conclave.

Best Supporting Actor: Kieran Culkin, A Real Pain

Most of the other acting categories still feel a bit unsettled this year, but Kieran Culkin is quickly becoming the runaway favorite from here to the Oscars. I think that's cemented with a Globes.

Best Original Score: The Brutalist

One of the only “below-the-line” categories the Globes recognizes, I’m going with the movie that has received a lot of the praise for its work there, The Brutalist. Though with work from Hans Zimmer (Dune: Part Two), Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (Challengers), Kris Bowers (The Wild Robot) and more, this is the one I’m least confident in.

Actual winner: Challengers

Best Original Song: 'Kiss the Sky,' The Wild Robot

Despite Emilia Perez having two chances at the award, I’m going with The Wild Robot’s powerful anthem, which was wonderfully performed by Maren Morris in the movie.

Best Screenplay: Sean Baker, Anora

Sean Baker has been an indie favorite for many years now, but Anora is his most widely acclaimed and successful movie, and a big part of that is his excellent writing. I see Coarlie Fargeat’s The Substance and Jesse Eisenberg’s script for A Real Pain as the big challengers, but I think Anora takes the prize here.

Actual winner: Conclave

Best Director: Brady Corbet, The Brutalist

The Brutalist is an incredible accomplishment — a decade-spanning story that at its heart is an intimate story about a man’s struggle to find the American dream after immigrating to the country as a refugee from World War Two, yet it feels as big as the likes of Dune or Gladiator 2. That is a credit to Brady Corbet’s direction, which I think will be rewarded at the Globes.

Cinematic Box Office Achievement: Wicked

Only the second year that this award has been handed out, it’s hard to know how the Globes will go. Last year they gave the prize to 2023’s biggest movie at the box office, Barbie. If that’s the bar, then Inside Out 2 should win. But instead, I think they’ll be more open to what merits a win, and in this case give it to the movie that became the biggest phenomenon of the year, Wicked.

Best Motion Picture — Animated: The Wild Robot

While the Globes could go for the acclaimed international animated movie Flow, The Wild Robot received three other nominations outside of this category (most of any animated movie), which lends me to believe there is wide support for it, enough to snag the win.

Best Motion Picture — Non-English Language: Emilia Perez

Similarly, Emilia Perez was the most nominated movie this year by the Globes, so I think it is walking away with one of the Best Motion Picture prizes. I’m going with Non-English Language in this case.

Best Motion Picture — Comedy: Anora & Best Motion Picture — Drama: The Brutalist

Ultimately, I think the night will belong to Anora and The Brutalist, as both movies earn the big prizes of the evening and tie for the most Globe wins among movies with three apiece, cementing their places as two of the favorites for the rest of the awards calendar.

Best Actress — Comedy: Jean Smart, Hacks

I was tempted to pick Kristen Bell here, but Jean Smart is so consistently brilliant and hilarious in Hacks season 3 that even with the Globes’ tendency to want to recognize some of the newer shows and performers, they can’t deny recognizing Smart once again.

Best Actor — Comedy: Adam Brody, Nobody Wants This

Where Bell came up short, I think Adam Brody will win the Golden Globe for Best Actor — Comedy. As one half of a new favorite TV couple in Nobody Wants This, Brody gave arguably the best performance of his career.

Best Actress — Drama: Anna Sawai, Shogun

Clear some more space on your trophy case Anna Sawai, after winning the Emmy for Shogun, the Globes should follow as her performance as Mariko is undeniably brilliant. If there’s an upset looming though, it could be from Kathy Bates for Matlock.

Best Actor — Drama: Hiroyuki Sanada, Shogun

I think it’s going to be a good night for Shogun, with Hiroyuki Sanada’s brilliant and noble performance as the calculating Toranaga in the epic period drama closing out the two Drama acting prizes for the show.

Best Actress — Limited Series, Anthology or TV Movie: Jodie Foster, True Detective: Night Country

The Golden Globes have shown their love for Jodie Foster in the past, including giving her the Cecil B. DeMille Award for her career’s work. But now I expect they’ll recognize her great work on TV in True Detective: Night Country.

Best Actor — Limited Series, Anthology or TV Movie: Colin Farrell, The Penguin

Not picking Richard Gadd for Baby Reindeer here does scare me a bit, but like Foster, the Globes have a thing for Colin Farrell (he’s a two-time winner) and his performance in The Penguin is widely lauded and awards-worthy.

Best Supporting Actress: Jessica Gunning, Baby Reindeer

Baby Reindeer gets its trophy here for Jessica Gunning’s buzzy performance, repeating her win from the Emmys and many other voting bodies.

Best Supporting Actor: Javier Bardem, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story

Here’s my upset pick of the night. The likeliest picks are either Ebon-Moss Bachrach for The Bear season 3 or Tadanobu Asano continuing Shogun’s big night, but I’m predicting that Javier Bardem wins for Netflix’s buzzy show about the Menendez brothers.

Best TV Stand-Up Comedy Performance: Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was

Nikki Glasser is hosting the Globes and nominated in this category. If she won she would join Sandra Oh in winning a Globe the same night she hosted. But I think the Globes go for the emotional pick and recognize Jamie Foxx, who returned to stand up to help explain what his scary medical situation in 2023 was all about.

Best Limited Series, Anthology or TV Movie: Baby Reindeer

It was a good year for this category (I haven’t mentioned Disclaimer and Ripley, but they round out this category with Baby Reindeer, Monsters, The Penguin and True Detective). Ultimately, I’m going with Baby Reindeer to win big.

Best TV Series — Comedy: Nobody Wants This

The Globes take the opportunity to become the first awards show to hand its top prize to Nobody Wants This, naming it the best comedy of the year.

Best TV Series — Drama: Shogun

Shogun wins because it was the biggest, most talked about and all around best drama on TV this year.

Awards season is upon us, and one of the biggest events of the calendar is the Golden Globes. The annual Hollywood gathering recognizes some of the best work across movies and TV from the past year, as judged by the journalists that make up the voting body. Let us catch you up on everything you need to know about this year’s ceremony, Golden Globes 2025.

One of the things that makes the Golden Globes unique from its most notable contemporary (The Oscars) is that it splits its categories into genres — Drama and Comedy/Musicals. This allows for the show to recognize some more of the great work of the year, including some titles that might not get the chance among other voting bodies. On the TV side, the Globes is often known for recognizing new shows, as they are one of the first major awards bodies to consider shows that premiere in the fall.

Golden Globes 2025 date

The Golden Globes 2025 take place on Sunday, January 5, at 8 pm ET/5 pm PT from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles. The awards ceremony airs on CBS.

In order to watch the Golden Globes 2025 you must have access to your local CBS station, be that through a traditional pay-TV provider, a TV antenna or a live TV streaming service with access to CBS (Fubo, Hulu with Live TV, YouTube TV). You can also stream the awards ceremony live on Paramount Plus with Showtime; all Paramount Plus subscribers will be able to stream the show on-demand the following day.

Golden Globes 2025 Host

The Golden Globes have tapped comedian Nikki Glaser as the host for the Golden Globes 2025. This is Glaser's first time hosting the Globes, but it is also a first for the Golden Globes, as she is the first woman to host the ceremony solo (Sandra Oh co-hosted with Andy Samberg, while Tina Fey and Amy Pohler were a team).

Glaser made headlines earlier this year for her great set during Netflix's The Roast of Tom Brady, but she has been a popular figure on the stand-up circuit for years. She was also the host of the reality series FBoy Island. Glaser received her first-ever Emmy nomination this past year for her stand-up special, Nikki Glaser: Someday You'll Die.

Golden Globes 2025: Cecil B. DeMille Award

The Cecil B. DeMille Award is the Golden Globes' lifetime achievement award recognizing landmark figures from the film industry. The recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille Award for the Golden Globes 2025 is Viola Davis.

Davis is a Golden Globe winner for Best Supporting Actress for the 2016 movie Fences (a role she also won an Oscar for), with seven Golden Globe nominations in total. Davis is best known for her roles in movies like The Help, Widows, The Woman King and more. She has also produced many movies, including Troop Zero and The Woman King.

“Viola Davis is a luminary whose profound talent has continuously shifted the lens through which we see and understand film,” stated Helen Hoehne, president of the Golden Globes. “Presenting her with the 2025 Cecil B. DeMille Award is not only an honor but a reflection of our admiration for her relentless dedication to her craft and her monumental impact on the industry. Viola’s courage in portraying complex, powerful characters has broken barriers and paved new paths, making her an emblem of excellence and an ideal recipient of this prestigious award.”

Golden Globes 2025: Carol Burnett Award

The TV version of the Golden Globes Lifetime Achievement Award is the Carol Burnett Award, named for the legendary comedian. This year's recipient is Ted Danson.

Danson has starred in some of the most popular TV series of all time, most notably Cheers, but also Becker, Damages, Bored to Death, CSI and The Good Place. He currently stars in the popular Netflix original series A Man on the Inside. Danson is a 12-time Golden Globe nominee (including one for this year) and a three-time winner.

“Ted Danson has entertained audiences for decades with his performances that will forever be ingrained in television history,” said Helen Hoehne, president of the Golden Globes. “His career is a testament to his remarkable talent and versatility as an actor and bears resemblance to the award’s namesake. It is an honor to present him with the 2025 Carol Burnett Award to celebrate the tremendous impact he has made and continues to make in television.”

The big winner of the 2024 Golden Globes was definitely Oppenheimer, which took home five trophies including Best Motion Picture Drama, Best Director for Christopher Nolan and acting trophies for stars Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. But the biggest shock of the night came when Anatomy of a Fall beat not only Oppenheimer but Barbie and Poor Things for Best Screenplay.

Another surprising detail soon followed when director/co-writer Justine Triet was giving her acceptance speech for the award. Describing the process she and her life partner Arthur Harari went through writing the screenplay in the early days of the pandemic, she let spill the answer to the biggest mystery of Anatomy of a Fall: did Sandra (played by Sandra Hüller) kill her husband or was it a suicide? (SPOILER ALERT, as we're going to discuss details of the Anatomy of a Fall ending.)

The movie chronicles an intense investigation into the husband's death, followed by an even more intense courtroom battle as they dig into the couple's troubled relationship, as well as how their son Daniel (Milo Machado Graner) copes with the revelations he learns about his parents. But at the end of the movie, Sandra is found not guilty of murder and allowed to go home, but audiences can't help but have lingering questions on what really happened, as the movie never definitively shows us.

Triet seemingly put the question to bed though with her acceptance speech, which you can watch right here:

The key bit of info is this:

"I remember we kept on saying, 'OK, well, we are having a lot of fun, but… no one is going to see this movie. It's too long, they talk all the time, there's no score, a couple fighting, suicide, a dog vomiting. I mean come on.”

She specifically says "suicide," which we cannot take but to mean that the co-writer and director of the movie clarified Sandra’s husband did indeed kill himself and that she was truly innocent in his death.

While Anatomy of a Fall is one of the best reviewed movies of the year and made What to Watch's top 10 movies of 2023 list, it was definitely seen as an underdog against its fellow nominees made up of Hollywood behemoths in the Best Screenplay category. But the Golden Globe Journalists (renamed from the Hollywood Foreign Press), which is made up of primarily international film journalists and critics, chose to honor the Cannes-winning movie that made by international artists with this award.

They did so again later in the night, awarding it Best Motion Picture, Non-English language, even though much of the dialogue is spoken in English, though French is also used throughout.

The big question now for fans of awards shows is can Anatomy of a Fall repeat this success at the Oscars in March?

Where to watch the Golden Globes 2024 red carpet?

You won't be able to tune into the red-carpet glamour on CBS, as the network will be airing football until the Golden Globes 2024 ceremony broadcast begins at 8 pm Eastern. 

Instead, Variety and Entertainment Tonight have partnered for the Globes' official red-carpet pre-show, which will air digitally beginning at 6:30 pm ET / 3:30 pm PT on GoldenGlobes.com, ETOnline.com and Variety's website and social platforms. 

Per Variety, the Globes’ official pre-show will feature exclusive footage of attendees arriving at the Beverly Hilton as well as interviews hosted by Variety journalists Marc Malkin and Angelique Jackson and Entertainment Tonight correspondent Rachel Smith. 

Along with this year's nominees, you'll likely see interviews with the 2024 Golden Globes host, comedian Jo Koy, as well as high-profile presenters like Ben Affleck, Oprah Winfrey, Dua Lipa, Angela Bassett, Florence Pugh, Will Ferrell, Michelle Yeoh and Issa Rae, among others. Consider it a tasty little amuse-bouche before the main feast!

Hollywood's "party of the year," the Golden Globes, is back for another year to honor the best in TV and movies. But there's a major change for the awards show, as the Golden Globes 2024 have a brand new TV home.

The Golden Globes are run by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), with 2024 marking the 81st year of the awards ceremony. Alongside the Oscars and the SAG Awards, the Golden Globes are one of the big three televised award shows that air in the US in the early months each year.

Golden Globes Cecil B. deMille Award

The Cecil B. deMille Award presented by the Golden Globes is their version of a lifetime achievement award recognizing individuals working in movies. The recipient for the 2024 ceremony has not been announced to date, but recent recipients have included Eddie Murphy, Jane Fonda, Tom Hanks, Jeff Bridges, Oprah Winfrey, Meryl Streep, Denzel Washington, George Clooney and Jodie Foster.

With the Golden Globes airing on CBS in 2024, anyone with a traditional pay-TV subscription or a TV antenna receiving local stations can watch the awards show on their TV. Why we love it: Sparkling like the absolute star that she is, the legendary Malaysian actress accepted her first Golden Globe award wearing an Armani Privé gown embroidered head-to-toe in crystals and sequins. 

The Golden Globes are back on TV, as the annual award ceremony is taking place tonight, Tuesday, January 10. After a year off the air following the reveal of shoddy ethical and membership practices and a subsequent boycott from many in the Hollywood community, what has often been called as Hollywood's biggest party hopes to have another fun celebration for the years' best movies and TV shows (albeit on a Tuesday night).

Among the titles up for awards tonight are the likes of The Banshees of Inisherin, Elvis, Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Fabelmans, TÁR and Top Gun: Maverick on the movie side, and Abbott Elementary, The Bear, Better Call Saul, House of the Dragon, Wednesday and The White Lotus for TV.

The official Golden Globes ceremony begins at 8 pm ET/5 pm PT on NBC, as well as streaming live on Peacock (available with Sky TV and NOW TV in the UK) with red carpet coverage hailing from E! on TV as well as a few online outlets. One way or the other this is going to be a big night for the Golden Globes, because it's a test to see how Hollywood and viewers react to the organization after their public faceplant. The Globes have gotten a number of big name presenters for the show, including Jennifer Coolidge, Ana de Armas, Henry Golding, Regina Hall, Cole Hauser, Jenna Ortega, Billy Porter, Quentin Tarantino, Letitia Wright and more. The ceremony is also set to honor Eddie Murphy and Ryan Murphy with their career film and TV awards, respectively. But not many of the nominees openly celebrated their Golden Globe nominations when they came out; will they show up to the actual ceremony to see if they won?

NBC is essentially giving the Globes a one-year tryout for their new image, with the long-time broadcast home of the awards show seeing its deal end after this year. Can the Globes reclaim its spot as the biggest awards show other than the Oscars? Or do viewers still care?

Jerrod Carmichael kicks off the Golden Globes with opening monologue

Comedian Jerrod Carmichael did not hide away from the elephant in the room with the Golden Globes, saying that he is here because, as he simply put it, "I am Black." He then touched upon the issues that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association faced with their lack of representation.

It was a very fair critique of the situation sprinkled with some good jokes. Credit to Carmichael, the producers for going for it and the smallest bit of credit for the HFPA for knowing they had to take it on the chin right off the bat.

But, as Carmichael capped things, it's time to celebrate and have some fun.

Ke Huy Quan wins Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture

Everything Everywhere All at Once actor Ke Huy Quan took home the first award of the night, winning for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture. In his acceptance speech, he thanked Steven Spielberg, who he acknowledged for helping him get his start in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, but that he began to wonder if that was going to be the peak of his career, but thanked the Daniels (Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert) for giving him the chance that has led to his victory.

What to Watch picked Quan to win this award, so we're one for one to start the night.

Angela Bassett wins Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture

Following in quick succession after Ke Huy Quan's win, Angela Bassett was awarded the Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for her performance in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. This is the second Golden Globe in her career, previously winning for What's Love Got to Do With It. She spoke about the journey of making the movie after losing Chadwick Boseman, but that they can now have joy for what they made.

We had Jamie Lee Curtis winning this award, so we're now one for two.

Tyler James Williams wins Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy/Drama series

After a fun monologue from Jennifer Coolidge about all of her fantastic and totally reasonable fears of presenting at the Globes, Abbott Elementary's Tyler James Williams was awarded the Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy/Drama series. He ended his acceptance speech emphasizing that the story of his character, Gregory Eddie, is one that deserves to be told just like any other story.

Babylon wins Best Score, RRR's "Naatu Naatu" wins Best Original Song

Wednesday star Jenna Ortega introduced the nominees for Best Score and Best Original Song (with a nod to the classic French movie Jules et Jim squeezed in there). Justin Hurwitz for Babylon took home the award for Best Score. Then the international sensation RRR won Best Original Song for "Naatu Naatu."

Jeremy Allen White wins Best Actor in a TV Comedy/Musical Series

The Bear star Jeremy Allen White took home the Best Actor in a TV Comedy/Musical Series, the first Golden Globe of his career. Looks like the show of the summer got the attention of the HFPA. He started off his acceptance speech with a not safe for TV word, but winning can cause those to slip out sometimes.

Quinta Brunson wins Best Actress in a Comedy/Musical Series

Abbott Elementary is two for two, as Quinta Brunson follows Tyler James Williams' win with one of her own fest Best Actress in a Comedy/Musical Series. Reading her acceptance speech off her phone, she acknowledged that her phone as blowing up with texts from her phone.

Colin Farrell wins Best Actor in a Comedy/Musical

Colin Farrell earned his second ever Golden Globe with a win for Best Actor in a Comedy/Musical for The Banshees of Inisherin. His first came also from working with Martin McDonagh and Brendan Gleeson in In Bruges, so he took a special note to thank McDonagh and Gleeson. He then gave fun and lovely notes to co-stars Kerry Condon, Barry Keoghan and Jenny the donkey.

Michelle Yeoh wins Best Actress in a Comedy/Musical

Michelle Yeoh took home the Best Actress in a Comedy/Musical for her role in Everything Everywhere All at Once. She has long been a movie icon for her action work, and jokingly threatened she would beat up the piano player who tried to play her off, as she spoke of her road to this moment. She joins co-star Ke Huy Quan who won Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture earlier in the night.

Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio wins Best Picture - Animated

The Golden Globes for Best Picture - Animated went to Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio, who said it was great to be back, acknowledged that some of the people are probably drunk and that animation is cinema and is not just for kids, which he describes his movie as.

Austin Butler wins Best Actor in a Drama

The man who brought Elvis back to the big screen in Elvis, Austin Butler, took home to prize of Best Actor in a Drama. He honored both his heroes (Brad Pitt and Quentin Tarantino), his fellow nominees and the main he was portraying, Elvis Presley, as well as thanking his co-star Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington for his support.

We're about halfway through the night and WTW's predictions are 6/8 in movie categories and and 1/3 in TV, so 7/11 overall.

Zendaya wins Best Actress in a Drama Series

Zendaya was awarded the Best Actress in a Drama Series for her role on Euphoria. She was not present to accept her role.

Julia Garner wins Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy/Musical/Drama Series

After three previous nominations, Julia Garner earns her first Golden Globe for her role in Ozark, which came to an end in 2022. It is sure to look nice to all the Emmys that she previously took home for that performance.

Ryan Murphy awarded the Carol Burnett Award

Billy Porter introduced this year's Carol Burnett Award winner, Ryan Murphy, speaking the words that come to mind when he thinks of his long-time collaborator. The montage showed clips of some of Murphy's most iconic series, including Nip/Tuck, Feud, American Horror Story, MONSTER: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, The Normal Heart, Glee, Pose and more.

After receiving his standing ovation, Murphy took a moment to recognize MJ Rodriguez, who won a Golden Globe last year but didn't get her moment because the show wasn't televised, allowing everyone to get the reception she deserved for being the first transgender person to win a Globe. He continued honoring his collaborators with being complementary to Porter, Niecy Nash-Betts, Matt Bomer and Jeremy Pope for their bravery in being who they are and their incredible work as actors, as examples of what can be for those looking for role models like them.

Cate Blanchett wins Best Actress in a Drama

Cate Blanchett was awarded the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama for her role in TAR, however, she was not in attendance to accept.

Argentina, 1985 wins Best Picture - Non-English Language

In a bit of an upset, Argentina, 1985 won the Best Picture - Non-English Language movie. If you want to watch the movie, it is streaming right now on Prime Video. The movie depicts a historical case against military leaders in Argentina after its military dictatorship was overthrown and the legal team that took the case on.

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy sends a message

In a surprise appearance, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy sent a message to those at the Golden Globes. He spoke that the tide in the war against Russian as turned, but that there are still hard days ahead. He expressed hope that people will be there to celebrate when the fighting ends and Ukraine is victorious.

The Banshees of Inisherin wins Best Screenplay

Martin McDonagh won for his screenplay for The Banshees of Inisherin, his second win for Screenplay at the Globes (previously winning for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri). Saying he wrote the movie for Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, he promised not to wait 14 years between their next collaboration (we can only hope).

Steven Spielberg wins Best Director

Steven Spielberg's semi-autobiographical movie The Fablemans earned him his third-ever Golden Globe win; his previous wins for Best Director for Saving Private Ryan and Schindler's List. He said that the win was for his family, including his mother, who is "kvelling" up in Heaven.

Paul Walter Hauser wins Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology or TV Movie

Paul Walter Hauser wins for his performance as the serial killer Larry Hall in Black Bird, which was a hit for Apple TV Plus over the summer. He ran through the names of the people he wanted to thank, with a particularly shoutout for his co-star the late Ray Liotta.

Jennifer Coolidge wins Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series, Anthology or TV Movie

Jennifer Coolidge keeps racking up the wins for her role in The White Lotus. After earning the Emmy for the first season back in the fall, she has now won the Golden Globe for The White Lotus season 2. It was her second appearance on the stage that night and, of course, it was memorable for her humor and sincere emotions. If you haven't seen the speech, maybe don't look for it online if you're not caught up with The White Lotus.

Amanda Seyfried wins Best Actress in a Limited Series, Anthology or TV Movie

Amanda Seyfried won Best Actress in a Limited Series, Anthology or TV Movie, but was not on hand to accept the award.

Evan Peters wins Best Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology or TV Movie

On the night that Ryan Murphy was honored, his most recent leading man, Evan Peters, was also awarded for his performance as Jeffrey Dahmer in the Netflix hit Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. 

The White Lotus wins Best Limited Series, Anthology or TV Movie

Just like its stars Jennifer Coolidge, The White Lotus continues its awards hot streak, being named the Best Limited Series, Anthology or TV Movie. Show creator Mike White accepted the award, acknowledging that he was a bit drunk and that he would take a bullet for his crew (in the leg, to be honest) and then admitted that just about everyone in the room initially passed on the show. But hey, who's laughing now? Mike White and all of us who love The White Lotus, that's who.

Eddie Murphy awarded the Cecil B. DeMille Award

Tracy Morgan introduced Eddie Murphy, the recipient of this year's Cecil B. DeMille Award. He cited Murphy's landmark comedy specials Delirious and Raw, his time on Saturday Night Live and movies like Beverly Hills Cop, Harlem Nights and Coming to America. We then got a montage of those and more highlights from Murphy's career.

Jamie Lee Curtis then came to the stage to speak about her time working with Murphy on Trading Places and seeing him grow as an artist, father and person. She and Morgan then officially presented the award to Murphy.

Murphy took the time to thank his family and those who we worked with throughout his career before he gave a message to the up and comers. He said that there is a blueprint to success that he followed for his career: pay your taxes, mind your business and keep Will Smith's name out of your bleeping mouth.

Kevin Costner wins Best Actor in a Drama Series

Yellowstone star Kevin Costner was the winner of the Best Actor in a Drama Series, but was not able to attend.

Abbott Elementary wins Best Comedy Series

Abbott Elementary took home its third Golden Globe of the night with its win for Best Comedy Series. Creator and star (and one of the show's two previous night's winners) Quinta Brunson accepted the award, recognizing how the work of her fellow nominees inspired her to make comedy and bring people together and how Abbott Elementary is able to help make people laugh.

House of the Dragon wins Best Drama Series

After Natasha Lyonne gave arguably one of the best presenter bits of the nice, HBO's Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon was named the Best Drama Series winner, a feat that its predecessor actually never accomplished. Stars Emma D'Arcy and Milly Alcock were on stage with Miguel Sapochink to accept the award.

The Banshees of Inisherin wins Best Picture - Comedy/Musical

The Banshees of Inisherin ends up the big winner on the movie side of the Golden Globes, winning the Best Picture - Comedy/Musical award, three in total.

The Fabelmans wins Best Picture - Drama

Quentin Tarantino presented the award for Best Picture - Drama to Steven Spielberg for The Fabelmans. It is the second award of the night for The Fabelmans following Spielberg's win earlier for Best Director.

That ends the 2023 Golden Globes. WTW's final predictions were 12/14 in the movie categories and 6/13 on the TV side, for a grand total of 18 of 27.

The awards season is kicking into high gear, with the 2023 Golden Globes nominations the first major awards ceremony for many new movies and TV shows from 2022. In fact, it was many of these newer entries that made the biggest statements, including Netflix's megahit Wednesday, the just-wrapped The White Lotus season 2 on TV. Meanwhile, on the movies side, The Banshees of Inisherin had the best day, leading the field in total nominations.

Golden Globe nominations were announced on Monday, December 12. The annual awards show is hoping for a bounce-back year after not airing a ceremony last January because of the controversy surrounding its organization, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and subsequent boycotts over its practices and lack of diversity. After some reworking, the Globes hope it's all water under the bridge now.

The best way to get the Golden Globes back in the good graces of viewers is for "Hollywood's biggest party" to put on a good show. To help them do so they've announced comedian Jerrod Carmichael (Rothaniel) as the host, and with their slate of nominees, are expecting some big names to be present at the ceremony.

Much of the Wednesday cast is likely to be in attendance as the show competes for Best TV Show — Comedy/Musical and to support Jenna Ortega, nominated for Best Actress — Comedy/Musical Series. The White Lotus, much like it did at the Emmys, dominated the limited/anthology/TV movie category with multiple members of its cast getting noms, as well as the show overall. Other big TV shows vying for the Globes are House of the Dragon, The Crown, Better Call Saul, Abbott Elementary and Severance.

For movies, The Banshees of Inisherin earned eight total nominations, including Best Picture — Comedy/Musical, four acting nominations, Best Director and Best Screenplay for Martin McDonagh and Best Score. However, it has some competition in its category with Everything Everywhere All at Once, which was second in total nominations with six. Other big name movies that did well with nominations include Babylon, Elvis, The Fabelmans, TÁR and Top Gun: Maverick.

The 2023 Golden Globes ceremony takes place on Tuesday, January 10, at 8 pm ET/5 pm PT on NBC.

The Golden Globes are going to be a bit lackluster this year. Following a bombshell article that revealed corruption and a striking lack of diversity as part of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which runs the Golden Globes, the second-biggest TV and movie awards show has found itself in hot water. NBC has canceled its annual broadcast of the awards for 2022 as a result and the usually boisterous party the Globes are known for will be a small in-person gathering without celebrities/nominees or even press to cover the event. It is unclear at this time if the ceremony will be shared in any way online.

Despite the mess that is going on with the organization, they did release their list of nominees for the best movie and TV shows of 2021. No matter what’s going on with the awards body itself, these movies and TV shows deserve their recognition. You, as viewers, also deserve to know exactly how you can watch all of them, and that’s what we’re here to do.

The feeling of immense loss can still be felt months later since Chadwick Boseman passed away from cancer. It still feels weird to refer to him in the past tense—we loss an amazing talent, but most heartbreaking, a phenomenal person. Chadwick Boseman received a posthumous Golden Globe for best actor in a motion picture for his role as a talented jazz musician in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Simone Ledward Boseman accepted the award on behalf of her late husband with a poignant and loving speech.

We must continue to celebrate the life and legacy of Chadwick Boseman. He may not be with us, but his kind yet tenacious spirit lives on and will forever be immortalized in the lives he touched through his on-screen performances. 

Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (2020)

After watching Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, you’ll understand precisely why Chadwick Boseman was awarded the Golden Globe for best actor in a motion picture. He played the role of Levee, a trumpeter in Ma Rainey’s band. Levee is ambitious and determined to stake his own claim on the music industry. The movie follows him, his bandmates, and Ma Rainey on a day that will forever change the course of their lives. 

42 (2013)

There are some historical inaccuracies in 42 but what isn’t inaccurate is the performance Chadwick Boseman gives in his portrayal of Jackie Robinson - the first black athlete to play in Major League Baseball (MLB) during the modern era. 

Get on Up (2014)

Get on Up is a biographical musical drama movie about the life of singer James Brown. Chadwick Boseman stars as the progenitor of funk music and a major figure of 20th-century music dance, he is often referred to by the honorific nicknames like Godfather of Soul. Get on Up uses a nonlinear narrative, following James Brown's stream of consciousness. He asynchronously recalls events from his life, occasionally breaking the fourth wall to address the audience. 

Da 5 Bloods (2020)

Da 5 Bloods is Chadwick Boseman’s final film, released in his lifetime before his death. It’s a war drama film directed, produced, and co-written by Spike Lee. Da 5 Bloods follows a group of four aging Vietnam War veterans who return to the country in search of the remains of their fallen squad leader, as well as the treasure they buried while serving there. 

Black Panther (2018)

Chadick Boseman has a knack for playing larger-than-life legends. Although T’Challa is a fictional comic character, Boseman brought him to life in a way that people will talk about for years to come. Black Panther is more than just another superhero movie thanks to Boseman’s quiet brilliance as a young prince thrust into becoming a king of his home country, Wakanda, after his father's unexpected passing, King T’Chaka. Black Panther grossed over $1.3 billion worldwide and broke numerous box office records, including the highest-grossing film by a black director, Ryan Coogler. 

Eight-time Golden Globe winner Jane Fonda is a national treasure. She continues to have nothing short of a remarkable career and life. Jane Fonda has been impactful both on and off-screen as she has often turned her acting into activism any chance she could, and still does till this day. Last night, the 83-year-old actress accepted the Cecil B. de Mille Award at the 78th Golden Globes. 

She gave a beautiful speech that perfectly summarized why she was deserving of the Cecil B. de Mille. She emphasized how impactful storytelling can be and the true importance of diversity, and the effort required to uplift those voices continuously. Jane Fonda herself has been part of some impactful genre storytelling ranging from drama to comedy. Here is our list of some of the best Jane Fonda throughout her iconic career, with the most honorable mention to Grace and Frankie. 

Klute (1971)

Klute is a neo-noir crime thriller film directed and produced by Alan J. Pakula, written by Andy and Dave Lewis, and starring Jane Fonda, Donald Sutherland, Charles Cioffi, and Roy Scheider. The film follows a high-priced call girl who assists a detective in solving a missing persons case. Jane Fonda won her first Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance as Bree Daniels. 

Barbarella (1968)

Barbarella is a  science fiction film directed by Roger Vadim, based on the French comic series of the same name by Jean-Claude Forest. The cult classic stars Jane Fonda as the title character, a space-traveller and representative of the United Earth government sent to find scientist Durand Durand, who has created a weapon that could destroy humanity. 

Fun with Dick and Jane (1977)

Before the 2005 remake, there was the original Fun with Dick and Jane, which starred Jane Fonda. Money and jewelry aren't the only things Fonda steals in this comedy directed by Ted Kotcheff. She steals a ton of scenes and laughs in a movie that is caustically critical of the anarchy of the American way of life. 

9 to 5 (1980)

Jane Fonda stars alongside Dolly Parton and Lily Tomlin in a comedy that is as relevant today as it was in 1980. 9 to 5 is one of those movies you know about well before ever watching it, which speaks to its never-ending impact. The movie follows three working women who live out their fantasies of getting even with and overthrowing the company's autocratic, sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot boss, played by Dabney Coleman. 9 to 5 grossed over $103.9 million and is the 20th-highest-grossing comedy film.

Julia (1977) 

Jane Fonda won her second Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in her role as Lillian Hellman in Julia, a Holocaust period drama directed by Fred Zinnemann. The screenplay, written by Alvin Sargent, was based on a chapter from Lillian Hellman's book Pentimento. The movie follows the author's alleged friendship with a woman named "Julia," who fought against the Nazis in the years before World War II. The movie also stars Vanessa Redgrave, Jason Robards, Hal Holbrook, Rosemary Murphy, Maximilian Schell, and Meryl Streep, who made her film debut.  

Monster-in-Law (2005)

Last but certainly not least, Jane Fonda co-starred with Jennifer Lopez in one of the best romantic comedies from the early aughts. Monster-in-Law marked a return to cinema for Fonda, her first film since 1990’s Stanley & Iris. Fonda, Lopez, and Wanda Sykes have great chemistry throughout this movie that received negative reviews from dead soul critics. Monster-in-Law follows Charlotte's (Lopez) love life, which is nothing but an endless string of disastrous blind dates, until she meets her perfect person, Kevin. Unfortunately for Charlie, his mother (Fonda) is deeply petty and stops at nothing to make sure they don’t tie the knot. 

It's Golden Globe time! Amy Poehler and Tina Fey return to host the awards show for their fourth run though, admittedly, the 78th telecast will work a little bit differently form the shows they've put on in the past. Fey and Poehler will be hosting from opposite coasts (with Fey in the Rainbow Room in New York and Poehler at the Beverly Hills Hilton in California). Nominees and winners will Zoom conference in from wherever they are in the world. 

Netflix led the way with 22 nominations for movies and 20 more for series. Amazon had seven for movies and three for series. In addition to the traditional awards, the Globes will honor Jane Fonda with the Cecil B. deMille Award, and Normal Lear will be honored with the Carol Burnett Award.

Instead of a packed ballroom with barely any space between the star-studded tables, tonight’s Golden Globes will still be glitzy but without the boozy antics at the Beverly Hilton. Despite award season shifting by a few months, the landscape is far from back to where it once was and this celebration will likely resemble the virtual Emmy telecast. It has been nearly a year since the world shifted into pandemic mode and we are still in the middle of the global COVID-19 crisis. Virtual events and video conferencing platforms like Zoom have become the norm and productions have introduced protocols to keep the cast and crew as safe as possible during this unprecedented time. Last March, film and TV sets were shut down, sports were canceled and postponed and theaters (both movie and stage) were shuttered. The ESPN docuseries The Last Dance captured the exhilaration and high drama of watching exceptional athletes, while Netflix’s Tiger King tapped into a salacious narrative that was in short supply. It was practically impossible to purchase toilet roll and sanitizer, but certain shows became a respite for when the 24-hour news cycle became too much. 

Marvel movies and James Bond kept getting new release dates and there was enough television in the can for the months to come. Sure, some shows that aren’t filmed months in advance like Riverdale ended abruptly (and have since finished those arcs), while CBS’ All Rise was the first drama to pull off the virtually shot episode (quickly followed by Mythic Quest). Meanwhile, late-night talk shifted to attics and home offices before reverting back to the studio without a live audience (and with most guests appearing virtually). In these unchartered waters, it is hardly surprising that some genres have adapted better than others while one-off series embracing quarantine have mostly been a string of well-intentioned misfires — including Coastal Elites, Love in the Time of Corona, and Social Distance. Reviews for these lockdown anthology specials have been mixed and with so many other options on hand, it isn’t surprising that viewers aren’t clamoring for entertainment that matches the reality of the current landscape. But what about actual reality TV?     

Debuting in 2013, Bravo’s Below Deck wasn’t on my viewing radar until last summer. Having finished all three seasons of Selling Sunset, a vacant slot opened up for this particular genre and the sheer amount of available seasons (and spinoffs) made the superyacht series an enticing prospect. WandaVision has showcased how sitcoms are a respite and while I agree with this summation (Schitt’s Creek, Ted Lasso, and Bewitched have given me great comfort recently), my pandemic TV diet also requires a dash of reality escapism. The Bravo sailing adventure ticks that box while serving up glamorous global locations from the Caribbean to Tahiti. I am very late to this party but it quickly became clear why the Below Deck franchise has thrived — and continues to reach new fans during this period. 

Clicking play on the recently aired Season 8, it was apparent from the off that COVID-19 was going to factor. “February 11, 2020” reads the date in the first episode, immediately cluing the audience in and causing me to yell at the screen for them to get out while they can — as if I was watching a real-life horror movie unfold. The previous season had been a mess of toxic masculinity that had turned the drunken nights off into a series of incredibly unpleasant shouting matches (arguments are intrinsic to reality TV but this was next-level awful). Would the real-world encroaching on my escapist watch turn this into an exercise in misery? 

The short answer is no, rather, the initial blissful ignorance of the 'My Seanna' crew felt like watching a funhouse mirror version of a year ago with Wuhan and then Italy as the virus hot spots of this virus. Calls to family members included one person’s mother extolling the virtues of mask-wearing and the obligatory toilet roll shortage mention. The first episode begins with returning bosun Eddie Lucas (who last appeared in Season 3) arriving on an empty ship with Below Deck mainstay Captain Lee Rosbach missing. Eddie quickly discovers that Captain Lee is at the hospital after slipping and falling in the shower. Other ominous early signs include new chef Rachel having her purse stolen days before filming started throwing her through an emotional loop (having to replace personal documents at the best of times is frustrating let alone when you’re away from home) and deckhand Avery departing in the first episode due to news from home that his grandmother is very sick. 

With the benefit of hindsight, it becomes a case of reading into every illness as a sign that the universe is throwing up roadblocks, and tension is increased because of outside uncertainty. No doubt, I am attributing certain obstacles and challenges to the pandemic that is mere coincidence, however, Rachel’s mid-season outburst (and brief departure) is a reaction to her Italian boyfriend’s precarious situation. Ultimately, the season is cut short in the episode “Premature Evacuation” after the last two charter groups cancel (because of the pandemic), and Captain Lee calls an emergency meeting on March 14 to tell the crew they will be flying home the following day. 

The abrupt end means there are unresolved storylines — one interior crew member has only just been fired and her replacement was not allowed to fly out due to COVID restrictions — and it is hard to not think about the precarious position we are still in (although Season 9 is already at the casting stage). Reality TV is often labeled as inauthentic and staged, but the panic and confusion (and perplexed reactions to what is going on back home in the US, UK, and Australia) accurately capture the mood. Instead of the typical reunion in Andy Cohen’s Clubhouse studio in New York City, the cast joined the host from their various homes. Rather than storming off, they simply threaten to log off (as one cast member suggested he might do).

Below Deck is far from the only reality show to chronicle this unprecedented period and Season 12 of Ru Paul’s Drag Race crowned the winner after a grand finale switched the main stage for in the contestant's living rooms. Meanwhile, the current season began filming in the midst of this pandemic and this is documented in the mid-season RuPaul’s Drag Race: Corona Can’t Keep A Good Queen Down episode. 30 gallons of hand sanitizer, 5,000 masks, and 2,591 COVID tests are a few of the stats revealed, while also discussing the financial and mental health impact of this period. When watching the series, the most noticeable on-camera change is plexiglass partitions between the judges but a lot more unseen precautions are now part of the daily Drag Race competing experience. 

The second season of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK has a unique perspective as the first half was filmed pre-first lockdown and resumed 7 months later in a COVID protocol world. The interim period has given contestants time to perfect their drag, but the Queen’s On Lockdown special also depicts the economic challenges during this fraught time when live performance ceased to exist (in a conventional fashion). Similar in some respects to the Season 13 behind-the-scenes documentary, the UK version is even more effective because it occurs mid-way through and the contestants went from a career-high to terrifying uncertainty. It is another case of reality TV capturing the mood in an authentic and relatable manner. Meanwhile, network TV shows including procedurals, drama, and sitcoms are struggling to find that balance.  

It is impossible to ignore how much this has taken over our lives and it is important to show mask-wearing, but there are times where it becomes a distraction. This is Us has struggled with characters holding masks in their hands when at a safe distance or it starts to slip beneath the nose while talking. It is much more successful (and tear-inducing) when showing how technology connects us during this socially distanced period. Much like real life, these shows are trying their best to adapt, and the results vary greatly. There aren't going to be any Golden Globes given out for Best Pandemic Series, but RuPaul's Drag Race and Below Deck would be the frontrunners of this unconventional category.  

The nominations for the 78th Golden Globe Awards were announced this week to the usual fanfare. The notoriously peculiar Hollywood Foreign Press Association has always operated by its own series of rules, leading to nominees that veer wildly between delightfully surprising and utterly inexplicable. This was no different during this unprecedented year of change, with the organization still managing to perplex critics and industry figures alike. This is a season where James Corden and Jared Leto got nominated for slated performances and Emily in Paris racked up more nominations than Sound of Metal, Da 5 Bloods, and The Good Lord Bird. All in all, it was a very Golden Globes-esque morning.

There was one truly refreshing exception, however. In the Best Director category, no fewer than three of the five nominees were women filmmakers — two of whom were women of color. Emerald Fennell for Promising Young Woman, Chloé Zhao for Nomadland, and Regina King for One Night in Miami...

For the first time in the history of the HFPA, more than one woman made it into the category! It was totally unexpected and many feared that the HFPA would snub even the most high-profile women, something they’ve done numerous times over the years. It became such a glaring issue that Natalie Portman famously called them out over it during the ceremony in 2018. Over 78 years, only eight women have ever been nominated for the top title, and only one has ever taken home the award (Barbra Streisand, for Yentl in 1984.) That’s marginally better than the Oscars but those numbers are still disheartening, another sign of how maddeningly incremental the fight for gender parity in the entertainment industry remains. To put it in even blunter terms, the same number of women have been nominated for Best Director as men named John.

The Golden Globes themselves have never been as valuable a marker of success as the Oscars, but it still matters that they promoted female directors so heavily this season. As much as critics grumble about the HFPA, we still count the Globes as a crucial part of that narrative of prestige that builds up to the climax of Oscar night. That often difficult-to-define notion of prestige matters arguably as much as the quality of the films themselves and women have struggled for a long time to be viewed in that light.

Movie awards have little to do with merit, as much as we kid ourselves about “deserving” winners and the like. It’s down to public relations, campaigning and adherence to decades’ old industry standards. It’s not enough for a film to be “good.” It has to be successful by other standards, such as commercial viability. It also benefits to fit preconceived ideas of an “awards movie”, for example, stories of real-life people overcoming difficulties, war movies, splashy tales about Hollywood, biopics and so on.

Yet, when women filmmakers overcome all of those barriers, the goalposts just keep moving. Greta Gerwig did everything that the HFPA wants its potential nominees to do and she was still overlooked both for Lady Bird and Little Women. The same goes for acclaimed money-making titles with real awards bait energy, from A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood to Lorene Scafaria’s Hustlers and Lulu Wang’s The Farewell. Awards season is primarily built on playing it safe, and women are still seen as a “risk”.

In a year where the competition remains fierce but is smaller due to the delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a rare opportunity to shake things up. The HFPA, by and large, decided not to take that road. There was a noticeable shutout of filmmakers of color for films like Da 5 Bloods, Judas and the Black Messiah, and Minari. This is an organization that ignores Steven Yeun but celebrates James Corden in one of the most lambasted performances of 2020. Change is slow. Yet that trio of female directors getting their dues is something that could shine a light for future storytellers.

These are three wildly different filmmakers who have crafted narratives of thematic and stylistic flair that could not be more diametrically opposed: Regina King’s biopic exploring Black masculinity and the edge of change for the American civil rights movement in the mid-1960s; Chloé Zhao’s 21st century Grapes of Wrath, a quietly devastating and wholly naturalistic drama of the true face of economic anxiety; and Emerald Fennell’s furious reinvention of the rape-revenge fantasy for the post-Weinstein age, a prickly and deeply discomfiting takedown of systemic misogyny and a culture of sexual violence. For maybe the first time in the awards conversation, women filmmakers are contenders against one another because the field is truly diverse in a way that we seldom see. That the HFPA decided to recognize that, especially given their reticence to change, is a minor miracle.

And they’re not the only names in the conversation. There’s Josephine Decker for her surrealistic reimagining of the biopic with Shirley. Eliza Hittman’s deeply empathetic yet realistically blunt drama Never Rarely Sometimes Always is sweeping critics’ prizes. Kelly Reichardt, one of the true icons of modern indie minimalist cinema, received the reviews of her career for First Cow. Radha Blank made a splash at Sundance with The 40 Year Old Version. All of these women have the goods to be awards players and lead the way for long-term change in Hollywood at large.

A little gold man doesn’t define a director’s skills, nor does not being nominated for one cement their status as a bad filmmaker. What it does do, however, is act as a handy beacon for how the film industry perceives itself and how it wishes the rest of the world to embrace it. The Golden Globes may not change a lot of hearts and minds, but they did offer a shake-up of the status quo and their contemporaries should follow suit.

The nominations are in for the 78th annual Golden Globes Awards. The event was conducted virtually (because 2021), and this year's awards ceremony will take on a bit of a different look, too.

Tiny Fey and Amy Poehler will host for the fourth time. But they'll be doing so from different cities on different coasts, with Fey at the Rainbow Room in New York City, and Poehler from the Beverly Hills Hilton in California. Nominees will beam in from various locations all around the world.

In addition to all the nominations in the categories you'll find below, it also was announced that the 2021 Golden Globes will honor Jane Fonda with the Cecil B. DeMille Award, and Norman Lear will be honored with the Carol Burnett Award.

Director Spike Lee's children — Satchel and Jackson Lee — will serve as the 2021 Golden Globe Ambassadors.

Netflix led the way with 22 nominations for movies and 20 more for series. Amazon had seven for movies and three for series.

Netflix movies Mank (6) and The Trial of the Chicago 7 (5) — were top of the movie nominations. The Crown (6) and Schitt's Creek (5) led the TV nominations.

British actress Claire Foy first came to public attention in the BBC’s adaptation of Charles Dickens’s Little Dorrit, but it was her performances as two formidable queens that have cemented her place on the world stage.

She followed her turn as Anne Boleyn in the award-winning adaptation of Wolf Hall with a portrayal of a young Queen Elizabeth II in Netflix’s glossy, big-budget The Crown, a performance that has earned her a Golden Globe award for best actress in a TV drama.

She beat off competition from fellow Netflix star Winona Ryder — for her role in Stranger Things, as well as Westworld actress Evan Rachel Wood, Outlander’s Caitriona Balfe and The Americans star Keri Russell — to win the 'best actress in a TV drama' award.

Born in Stockport in 1984, Claire, 32, appeared in two of a trio of one-act plays directed by Paul Miller at the National Theatre in London, before she was cast as Amy Dorrit opposite Tom Courtenay and Matthew Macfadyen in the 2008 adaptation of Dickens' Little Dorrit.

She later starred opposite Nicolas Cage in Season Of The Witch and took on the role of Lady Persephone in the BBC's revival of Upstairs Downstairs, before teaming up with Wolf Hall director Peter Kosminsky to play a young woman who goes to present-day Israel/Palestine for The Promise.

Her performance as Anne Boleyn in Wolf Hall — opposite Damian Lewis and Mark Rylance — brought her a flood of critical praise and awards nominations, but her role as the Queen in The Crown catapulted her to the A-list.

The Hollywood Reporter hailed the Netflix show as a "starmaker" for Claire, while Variety praised her "clarity and phenomenal control".

Claire, who is married to Ashes to Ashes star Stephen Campbell Moore, is expected to return to the royal role for further installments of the Netflix drama. She will also be seen in drama Breathe, opposite Andrew Garfield, Diana Rigg and Hugh Bonneville.
