One of my favorite parts of my job is getting to recommend fantastic but lesser-seen indie movies to people who might enjoy them, but in my spotlight this time is a movie that's soon to change streaming hands.

The horror movie After Midnight is currently streaming on Hulu in the US, but only for a little while as it's being removed on Tuesday, September 30 (it's on Prime Video in the UK but isn't being removed).

Not to be confused with the more recent Taylor Tomlinson game show, or any of the seven previous movies with the same name, the After Midnight in question is from 2019.

It was directed by Jeremy Gardner who also plays the lead role, Hank. Hank is a man living in a rural town whose long-term girlfriend disappears, shortly before a creature starts to haunt him by attacking his house every night. As Hank tries to defend his property from the monster, he finds himself reminiscing on the relationship and what went wrong.

Fans of indie horror will recognize a few faces in the movie with Justin Benson (director of The Endless and Synchronic, and more recently Loki and Daredevil: Born Again) playing a role. He and Gardner are joined by Henry Zebrowski, Brea Grant and Ashley Song.

After Midnight is both a thriller, a horror and a relationship drama and all three parts fit together really well. But don't just take my word for it; the movie has a 90% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes.

For some reason the audience score is only on 46%, but lots of the criticisms take offence at the smarter storytelling decisions of the movie; its decision not to show the monster too much, and to start with a slower pace. And at least one Rotten Tomatoes review I saw wasn't for this version of the film.

The highlight of the movie for me is one long scene near the end which sees Hank talking with someone else about his relationship; it's ostensibly a dramatic scene but the camerawork and direction keep the sense of dread from the horror elements of the film.

It's well worth a watch, especially if you like your horror tense and spooky instead of simply a procession of jump scares.

Luckily, while the movie is being pulled from Hulu, it'll still be available to watch online. It's streaming on Plex and Pluto TV, two free TV streaming services, although neither will let you see the movie ad-free.

Netflix has finally added Wednesday season 2 part 2, with fans in a frenzy over Lady Gaga's role.

The pop legend joins as Rosaline Rotwood, a character we know little about, although she's thought to be a Nervermore teacher. We also know that her song "The Dead Dance" features in the four new episodes added globally today [Wednesday, September 3].

"Lady Gaga is one of the kindest, most grounded people I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with," says Wednesday star Jenna Ortega.

Talking at a fan event, Lady Gaga said, "I had a wonderful time working on Wednesday season 2, even just being a small part of the show. I loved working with Tim Burton and Jenna."

OK, so spoilers ahead if you've not watched the first four episodes (head over to Netflix now and watch them!).

Driven by terrifying premonitions, Wednesday was last seen heading to psychiatric facility Willow Hill, where outcasts are used for experimentation, to uncover the identity of a crow-manipulating serial killer and the truth behind "LOIS". But after freeing the inmates, Wednesday came face to face with her ex, Tyler Galphin (Hunter Doohan), in his monstrous Hyde form and ended up being hurled through a window.

Now in a coma, can Wednesday claw her way back to the waking world, regain control of her psychic abilities, and protect Nevermore from Hyde’s rampage?

"It's probably the darkest note that we've ever left on, and I was excited to do that midway through the season,” says Ortega. "We had so much fun shooting it, and it was great to see Wednesday in that Willow Hill environment. It makes total sense that she would release a bunch of patients from a psych ward."

For director Robert Eggers, it’s all in the detail. And that keen eye for accuracy and period has become his trademark over the course of just four films, along with a taste for violent horror and the darkest of atmospheres. His third film, The Northman (2022) has it all, plus the spectacle of an epic and a very familiar storyline. And it charges onto Netflix today, Thursday, August 28.

Based on the Norse legend of the Viking prince, Amleth, the film follows the young nobleman on his quest for bloody vengeance against the uncle who murdered his father and married his widowed mother. Sounds familiar? It should do. It’s the tale that inspired Shakespeare’s Hamlet, although his version was inevitably more wordy than Eggers’. Alexander Skarsgard plays Amleth who, as a boy, witnessed the slaughter of his father, King Aurvandil (Ethan Hawke), at the hands of his uncle Fjolnir’s (Claes Bang) henchmen. Unable to tolerate the marriage of his uncle and his mother (Nicole Kidman), the prince escapes and grows into manhood in exile, obsessed with the thought of avenging his father’s death but, when he returns home, his plans turn out to have broader ramifications, kick-starting a bigger, and more terrifying, retribution.

Although Eggers is more than happy to retain the Shakespearean echoes, the film is still very much his. The story has been honed down to be more direct and muscular so the hesitation that plagued the Danish prince simply isn’t there. Nor is the feigned mental illness. It’s all swept away to give us a single-minded prince, roaring in anger and clad simply but spectacularly in a loincloth and wolf’s head. The result is a film with all the violence and chaotic brutality that goes with its Viking setting, one that takes delight in going over the top in its action sequences and is utterly compulsive viewing. Critics on Rotten Tomatoes agreed, giving it a massive 90% score.

The release of The Northman cemented Eggers’ reputation as a director to watch, one with a distinctive style and the courage to give familiar stories a radical re-interpretation. His first feature, The Witch (2015), was set in New England in the 1630s and was based on the infamous Salem witch trials, which actually took place decades later. With its brooding menace and atmospheric photography, its story of the disintegration of a family facing an all-powerful evil made Eggers the darling of the indie circuit, earning him a Spirit Award and a directing award from Sundance, as well as many other nominations.

Fans had to wait four years for The Lighthouse (2019), a dark psychological two-hander with Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson stranded on a remote island and trying to preserve their sanity. His fourth, and most recent, movie arrived last year, two years after The Northman, and took a startlingly fresh look at one of the greatest of all horror stories. Nosferatu (2024) was a gloriously gothic tale of obsession, with highly-praised performances and a deeply sinister Count Orlok (an almost unrecognisable Bill Skarsgard). It was also a box office success, grossing nearly $182 million worldwide.

Aside from his own individual approach to storytelling, one of the reasons behind Eggers’ success is his unofficial repertory company of frequent collaborators. The striking visuals and atmospheric photography are all down to cinematographer Jarin Blaschke, who has been behind the camera for all four of the director’s films. Whether it’s the grainy black and white of The Lighthouse, the mixture of tones in The Northman or the subtlety and shadows of natural light in The Witch, he never fails to capture Eggers’ vision and won Oscar nominations for both The Lighthouse and Nosferatu. It’s a collaboration set to continue with the director’s next film, Werwulf, which is scheduled for release towards the end of next year.

That film also looks likely to see Eggers reunited with a number of actors, especially Willem Dafoe, so memorably grizzled in The Lighthouse and manic in The Northman. He’s also in discussions to appear in what looks like being the director’s next film after Werwulf, a re-working of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. It’s a lip-smacking prospect. Aaron Taylor-Johnson from Nosferatu is also confirmed for Werwulf and his co-star Lily-Rose Depp is in talks to join him.

Roger Eggers’ name on a film immediately points to a real experience, often with a fresh viewpoint on a classic story. And, if horror is added to the mix, so much the better. The Northman has the lot.

As we said, Weapons is only going to be playing in movie theaters for the foreseeable future, as no info on its streaming plans have been announced.

We presume that Weapons will first be made available to buy or rent on-demand at home before it eventually makes its streaming debut on HBO Max, seeing as it is a Warner Bros. movie. But as far as a timeline for when that all may happen, it’s TBD.

As mentioned, a Zach Cregger horror movie is generating a lot of buzz once again. Barbarian earned a “Certified Fresh” 92% score when it was released in 2022, but as of publication, Weapons is exceeding that with a 95% “Certified Fresh” score on Rotten Tomatoes. As you can read in the official WTW Weapons review, we agree that Cregger has crafted another entertaining horror entry.

So, what is Weapons about? The movie is set in a small town where one night an entire third-grade class wakes up at 2:17 in the morning and runs out of their homes, vanishing into the night; well, all but one. As the search for the kids drags out, the town grows restless and angry, with much of the ire directed at the class’ teacher.

Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, Alden Ehrenreich, Benedict Wong, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher and Amy Madigan star in Weapons.

Judi Spannegel is a new character who is first seen in Wednesday season 2 episode 2.

The character in the Netflix hit is played by The Princess Diaries star Heather Matarazzo, and it turns out to be more of a key part than people imagined.

Bubbly Judi works as an executive assistant to Dr. Rachael Fairburn (played by Thandiwe Newton) at the scary Willow Hill Psychiatric Facility, an asylum for Outcasts (people with supernatural abilities). This is where "Hyde", Tyler Galpin (Hunter Doohan), resides.

Teasing the character on her Instagram, Heather wrote: "She loves cats…..and jellybeans…..and other things…to find out what, you're gonna have to tune in."

How is Judi Spannegel introduced in Wednesday season 2?

We first see Judi in episode 2 at Willow Hill. She's very enthusiastic about Dr. Fairburn's work and tells Wednesday she should read her book.

When Wednesday comments that Dr. Fairburn isn’t an Outcast, Judi doesn't think that should matter. It’s a brief exchange, and we only see Judi a couple more times, picking Dr Fairburn up in the car when she comes to Nevermore and when Dr. Fairburn discusses what she’s planning to do with their new patient, Marilyn Thornhill. However, things take an interesting turn of events...

What’s the big reveal about Judi Spannegel in Wednesday season 2 (MAJOR SPOILERS!)?

Judi Spannegel is unmasked as a major villain in Wednesday season 2 episode 4. She’s revealed to be Augustus Stonehurst’s daughter, which is how she knew about the secret passages at Nevermore since her father worked there and used them to visit the aviary he built her in Iago Tower.

She says her father loved Outcasts so much that he wanted to be one. She says they are trying to extract their abilities to give to Normies and reveals that while she was born a Normie, thanks to her father’s work, she’s an Avian. Fester thinks it’s wrong that he experimented on his own daughter, but Judi says she volunteered. She says Augustus wanted to be a DaVinci, but his body couldn’t take it. It sent him mad, and he was admitted as a patient at Willow Hill. He was also previously a science teacher at Nevermore.

As she talks, Fester powers up his electricity to fire at her. When he lets it go, all the lights go out at Willow Hill.

The power cut releases the patients Judi has held hostage, and they begin to attack her, but she manages to escape.

Where have I seen Heather Matarazzo before?

Heather's most famous role is as Lilly Moscovitz, best friend of Anne Hathaway’s Mia, in The Princess Diaries and its 2004 sequel. She’s also turned up in movies like Scream 3 (2000) and made her debut as a child actor in Welcome to the Dollhouse (1995). On television, she appeared in Now and Again, The L Word and Roseanne.

But there’s no doubt that Wednesday season 2 is her biggest role of recent times. The character has made a big impact on fans, and she’s become arguably the most talked-about character from the first four episodes.

The horror genre has truly become a director’s showcase. Robert Eggers (The Witch, Nosferatu), Osgood Perkins (Longlegs, The Monkey), Ari Aster (Hereditary, Midsommar), Jordan Peele (Get Out, Us) and Zach Cregger, whose 2022 horror movie Barbarian put him on the map. Cregger has returned with his follow-up to Barbarian, Weapons, an eerie and entertaining addition to the horror canon.

In addition to directing, Cregger wrote the script for Weapons, which tells the story of a town where all but one student in an elementary school class mysteriously disappear one night. Suspicions are immediately raised around their teacher, Justine (Julia Garner), as parents, including Archer (Josh Brolin), desperately search for answers. Alden Ehrenreich, Benedict Wong, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher and Amy Madigan also star.

Weapons is completely defined by Cregger’s storytelling and direction, as it overshadows just about everything else, including the performances of his notable cast (with one exception).

Let’s start with the story. Cregger plays around with structure, telling the story in chapters that focus primarily on specific characters, with some overlap or bleeding into one another. This slowly reveals the secrets of the movie, doling out answers and key info bit by bit until the third act and the whole picture comes into view. It’s similar to his jump cuts in Barbarian, but here it is more about slowly stringing the audience along. While it definitely is a slow burn, this strategy works to keep the audience actively engaged.

Supporting that is Cregger’s directing style, particularly his mastery of creating tone. For all two hours of the movie there is an undeniable sense of dread hovering over everything. But Cregger doesn’t achieve that with overt stylistic choices (outside of a couple of dream sequences), it’s his tracking of characters, lingering on certain things, letting his scariest moments play out slowly rather than with jump scares and the blending darker elements with touches of humor that give the movie its unique sensibility.

Having said that, I do have a couple of small gripes. One that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense is that characters are affected by something at different parts of the movie but we never get an effective answer as to how or why that happens; the movie’s big reveals don’t give a satisfying answer to this.

Also, the movie’s message isn’t particularly clear, at least on first viewing. When I watched Barbarian I could quickly get what Cregger was going for with his story, as well as simply being entertained by what’s unfolding on screen. With Weapons, the story itself is interesting, but what exactly I should be taking away from it is muddled at best. Sometimes you don’t need an obvious message, but it can make the difference between a good and great movie; in this case it has me liking Barbarian a little bit better than Weapons.

With Weapons being the Cregger show, it relegates most of his ensemble as mostly forgettable. That’s not to say that Julia Garner or Josh Brolin are bad; their characters are perfectly fine subjects for us to follow as the mystery is unraveled. But we’re not as interested in what’s going on specifically with them as we are with the overall mystery of the story.

The one exception in the cast is Amy Madigan. Best known for her work in the 1980s, particularly in the classic Field of Dreams and her Oscar-nominated role in Twice in a Lifetime, Madigan has her best role in years in Weapons and she makes the most of it, stealing every scene she’s in. The role she has definitely is designed to draw our attention, but what she does with her performance is exceptional.

Weapons is a very good horror movie, but it’s not one just for the horror diehards (I definitely don’t consider myself as such). Because the movie relies more on tone than things like jump scares (though there are a couple snuck in there) it should be more accessible to a broader audience. Basically, if you’re interested in good filmmaking and a story that will keep you fully invested, then Cregger’s Weapons is worth watching.

Lady Gaga plays teacher Rosaline Rotwood, who Netflix has teased clashes with Jenna Ortega's Wednesday. The makers say, "the mysterious and enigmatic Rosaline Rotwood, a legendary Nevermore teacher who crosses paths with Wednesday." So this sounds more than a brief cameo.

The makers gave a further tease saying: "Rosaline Rotwood. Cloaked in mystery with a reputation that precedes her. Our paths will surely cross. Welcome to mayhem”.

While the character isn’t directly referenced in the first four episodes of the new series, the Addams family (Morticia and Gomez) are staying in Rotwood Cottage at Nevermore, which is where Marilyn Thornhill was before them.

One theory offered online is that Rosaline is a Raven in Wednesday’s bloodline, but we won't find out for sure what’s going on until September.

Yes, Variety reports that Lady Gaga will release a song and a video for a track titled "Dead Dance". It seems logical that it will be released in early September to tie in with the singer making her debut in Wednesday.

Wednesday director Tim Burton has been full of praise for Lady Gaga, saying: "She’s such an artist and so for me, working with an artist is inspirational".

Evie Templeton has made an immediate impression on fans in Wednesday season 2, joining the Tim Burton hit in a big way in the second episode after being seen briefly in the first episode.

Evie plays new Nevermore student Agnes Demille and she first appears in episode 1 and then in a big way in episode 2. In episode 2, Agnes, makes her first important appearance, wishing Wednesday a happy prank day and introducing herself as Wednesday’s number one superfan.

She has played an elaborate prank on Wednesday involving Enid. Wednesday is told she has just 30 minutes to find Enid and can't involve anyone else. Enid wakes up chained to a chair, back-to-back with Bruno at the top of the Iago clock tower. Wednesday finds them in the tower, but the clock starts to move, and the mechanism moves some knives closer and closer to Enid and Bruno.

A typewriter is waiting for Wednesday with the words: "What don't you see? Type your answer to set your friends free.” Piles of books surround her, and she notes the authors and realizes she needs to find the missing book. She notes "The Invisible Man" by HG Wells is missing and types it in. The mechanism stops just in time and reverses.

Hands begin to clap, and a person appears, and yes, it’s Agnes! Quite the opening scene for her! Agnes explains she wanted Wednesday’s attention, and that’s why she came up with the game!

Speaking to Spotlight, Evie said the makers made sure she wasn't involved in anything too scary: "Obviously, safeguarding-wise, most of my scenes in Return to Silent Hill didn't really include anything that was too scary that made me feel uncomfortable, but any scenes that were more frightening were done with the adult cast separately, so I was never exposed to any of those things.

"Everyone was just super friendly and there were members of the crew that were there to ensure my wellbeing when I was on set, which was always great and always made me feel comfortable."

Everyone's favourite terror-loving teen sharpens her wit — and a few knives — to darken the gothic halls of Nevermore Academy once again, in Netflix’s hit Addams Family spin-off Wednesday season 2.

Agnes is a new student. She's an outcast who's obsessed with Wednesday. Evie told Teen Vogue: "She hugely idolizes her after hearing about her defeat of Joseph Crackstone. I mean, it was not hard to be a big fan of Wednesday because obviously Jenna is such a wonderful person. It was just really great getting to play around with sort of the relationship dynamics between our two characters and sort of building upon that relationship."

Slurp (Owen Painter)

Former DaVinci student Isaac Night is nicknamed Slurp and is a zombie reanimated by Pugsley.

Owen says: "He was just fun to play. I really would try my hardest to actually feel like this creature that the kids had to deal with — like this dog that was coming off the leash. It was nice to try and get a jump out of them whenever I could."

Principal Dort (Steve Buscemi)

Principal Dort is taking over Nevermore after the death of his predecessor, Larissa Weems. He's billed as being a very different character from Larissa.

Wednesday, the spine-chilling supernatural hit returns to Netflix for season 2 part 1.

This time round, Wednesday Addams returns to Nevermore Academy with her family in tow and brother Pugsley joining as a student. But, while season 1 saw the end of old adversaries, the mystery continues with a dangerous stalker, a new era led by a new principal and Wednesday's ongoing struggle to harness her psychic abilities.

Another year at Nevermore means another year of dark and spooky chaos and the Addams Family's world gets even more creepy. With new teachers and Principal Dort, there's a lot more horror to navigate in a season of two parts. Part 2 is coming on September 3. Spoilers to follow.

Here's a recap of everything that happened in Wednesday season 2 episode 4.

The final episode of Part 1 opens on Willow Hill. A guard is taking Marilyn Thornhill to see Dr. Fairburn. Marilyn says she’s read Dr. Fairburn’s book and it helped when she groomed Tyler.

Dr. Fairburn says she thought their time apart would weaken the bond, but she wants to know what Marilyn did so that she can try and rehabilitate him. She says she’ll help if she gets transferred to Willow Hill permanently as a patient, not a prisoner. Dr. Fairburn argues that a jury will have to decide and that she’ll have to use a more invasive method on Tyler, instead. Dr. Fairburn tells the guard to transfer Marilyn back to prison and place her in solitary confinement until her trial. Marilyn folds and says she’ll help. She just wants to see Tyler once.

Dr. Fairburn takes Marilyn to see Tyler. He tries to touch her, but the chains won’t quite reach. He says he’s been dreaming of this moment and suddenly transforms into the Hyde, strangling her round the neck. They can’t use the shock collar as it will kill her. Tyler throws her against the wall and she smiles at him.

Wednesday smashes into a mausoleum to take out an urn of ashes. She’s interrupted by Grandmama who says that her granddaughter called her for dirt on a competitor, so she was basically dared to show up. She takes the urn and reads the name, Patricia Redcar. She was one of the patients of Willow Hill that Galpin had kept the obituary for. She tells Grandmama she had a vision of her friend’s death and it’s somehow all connected. She also tells her how she’s lost her psychic ability and that Morticia plans to burn Goody’s book.

As they open Patricia’s urn, Grandmama instructs Wednesday to smell the ashes like she taught her. On doing so, she realizes there’s no human scent inside, only animals. The one-eyed crow flies down and takes the obituary, her evidence, flying away with the hooded figure on a motorcycle. Grandmama wants to know what happened and Wednesday tells her it was the Avian that controls the crow.

She wants Grandmama to buy the cemetery and find out who authorized the cremations. She says she’ll do it because it’ll upset Morticia thinking that Wednesday is getting into the family business. As she returns to Nevermore, the one-eyed crow is still following her. Back at the dorm, Enid’s left a scrunchie on the door to signal "do not disturb", but Wednesday ignores it. Enid is inside with Bruno. Agnes suddenly appears and reveals she’s been there for a while. Angry, Enid leaves.

Agnes delivers a letter from Wednesday’s publisher saying she’s been dropped as a writer. Wednesday says she’s happy not to make a sacrifice and instead tells Agnes they need to get into Willow Hill to get to the bottom of her investigation. She knows who to task with getting her the answers. Wednesday goes to Iago Tower and meets with Uncle Fester. She asks Fester to go to Willow Hill for her and he says the last time he did that was because her mother asked him to see Ophelia, but she was gone by the time he got there. Fester suddenly electrocutes Agnes, revealing her from her invisible state. Wednesday says she wants Fester to find Lois.

Fester checks into the Inn at Apple Hollow. He pays for a suite in cash and the other guests are quickly disturbed by all the noises he’s making. Sheriff Santiago arrives with her team after the receptionist calls the police and when they check all the rooms, they find Bianca’s mom in room 302 when it’s supposed to be empty. They question who she is. In Fester’s room, he’s having a bath. She arrests him and asks him about his copious amounts of driving licenses and passports. They pull up his file as a wanted bank robber. He pulls a cactus off the table and bites it. Sheriff Santiago tells the other officer to call Dr. Fairburn. They’ve also brought in Bianca’s mother for questioning.

Bianca is placing gala invitations into envelopes with the help of Ajax, Eugene and Pugsley. Principal Dort and Dr. Orloff come in to enforce the detention for the trouble with Slurp at the camping ground. Bianca receives text messages from her mom saying she’s at the police station. When she tries to leave, Principal Dort won’t let her. At Rotwood Cottage, Wednesday asks Morticia why Ophelia was at Willow Hill. She tells her to ask Grandmama. But, Wednesday says she’s keeping secrets and Morticia decides to tell her.

She explains that in Ophelia’s sophomore year, she was found screaming in the quad with black tears. For this, she was sent away. Morticia tried to argue with Grandmama that her problems were psychic, not mental. To this, Grandmama enters and drops off the deed to the cemetery she just bought Wednesday. Morticia dismisses Wednesday. But, before she goes, Grandmama whispers to Wednesday that the person who signed off the cremations was called Augustus Stonehurst. Morticia wants to know what Grandmama is doing and blames her for getting involved. Grandmama says she needs to give Wednesday space and Morticia says she can’t give advice when her daughter has been missing for 20 years.

To this, Grandmama says it was a tragedy, but that she’s willing to make a donation to the fundraising gala… on one condition. She wants Wednesday to have her book back. Instead, Morticia throws the book into the fire behind her. Back at detention, Bianca tells Ajax her mom is in trouble. But, she can’t siren Dr. Orloff because his head is in a jar. Instead, Ajax pretends to trip and uses his snakes to freeze Orloff to stone. Ajax says he’ll come with her and Pugsley and Eugene try to come too. Bianca uses her siren song to make them stay and finish the invitations.

At Willow Hill, Dr. Fairburn is questioning Fester. They’ve scanned his brain and it’s filled with sharp instruments. Fairburn welcomes him and admits him for shock therapy. In an art class run by Judi, Fester tries to ask a fellow patient if they know Lois, but they have no eyes or mouth. He then thinks the lunch lady is Lois as he flirts with her. She signals him into the cupboard to meet alone and he asks if she’s Louis, but her badge is dirty and it actually reads Louise. He shrugs, turns the light off and they start kissing.

Meanwhile, Agnes tells Wednesday that Augustus Stonehurst was the Normie head doctor at Willow Hill and before that, he taught science at Nevermore. He’s now a patient in Willow Hill himself. Enid tries to invite her to lunch, but she dismisses her. Instead, Wednesday asks Thing to track down Augustus. Enid comes over and explains how she’s upset Wednesday is leaving her out, but Wednesday argues she’s with Bruno and the pack.

A murder of crows descends and she tells Enid to get inside, but she won’t. The hooded figure instructs them to attack, but they’re after Thing and the one-eyed crow grabs him and flies away. Principal Dort uses his fire ability to shoot at the crow and it drops Thing. Thing tumbles to the ground and Enid manages to catch him in her hands.

Wednesday chases the hooded figure behind a secret door in a bookcase, pursuing them down a passageway and out behind a framed picture. When she gets out, the hooded cape is discarded on the floor and the figure has disappeared. She does find someone though, Dr. Fairburn, in Miss Capri’s music room. She says she’s there because Miss Capri offered to teach music therapy at Willow Hill. Miss Capri, a little out of breath, arrives with a tray of tea. Wednesday notices the lack of breath, but she says it’s been a long day. Wednesday also notes a cage of birds as she leaves.

Sheriff Santiago is questioning Bianca’s mother. She says there’s no record of her being there and she has no ID. Bianca arrives and uses her siren song to tell them to drop the investigation, shred the paperwork and forget her mother. Meanwhile, as Dr. Fairburn leaves with Judi, Thing sneaks onto the car and hitches a ride. Morticia tells Wednesday she knows Fester is in Willow Hill. She wants to know what he’s doing and Wednesday says he’s helping her find the answers. Morticia tells her she needs to stop before it gets worse.

At Willow Hill, Thing finds Fester and signals to him to find Stonehurst and then he’ll find Lois. Fester asks the security guard who takes him out to ‘Old Gus’ in his wheelchair outside, sitting inside the aviary. The guard asks him to roll him back to room 103 when he’s done talking to him. When Fester asks Augustus, the parrot on his shoulder answers instead. When it won’t give him answers, Fester uses his electricity to get it to reveal ‘51971’ to find Lois.

Wednesday goes to see Dr. Orloff and he says he’s heard about the birds and Wednesday says an Avian is trying to kill her. She asks him about Augustus Stonehurst, since he was a science teacher there. Dr. Orloff says Gus was very popular, but Orloff never liked him because he was a Normie. She asks about Lois and Orloff says Gus’s wife died before he got to Nevermore. But, he had a little girl. He says he built her the aviary in Iago Tower.

Elsewhere, Ajax and Bianca are sneaking her mom into an old classroom to hide. But, as they’re sneaking in the tunnels they catch Principal Dort on the phone. He’s telling someone he has it under control, but Ajax’s phone goes off with a text from Eugene asking where he is. Principal Dort is suspicious and opens the secret door in his fireplace that leads to the tunnel, but they’re hiding round the corner. That night at Willow Hill, Fester catches Marilyn Thornhill's eye as they pass each other in the corridor. She recognises who he is. As Fester rolls Augustus back to his room, they pass a maintenance door and Augustus starts to say Lois’s name whilst pointing at it.

Marilyn is brought in to talk to Dr. Fairburn. Marilyn explains although Tyler was angry at her, he’d never kill her because by killing his master, he’d seal his doom. She says to get in his head, they'll need to work together. She says they can make a deal because she has information that Dr. Fairburn will want. She tells her Fester Addams is a patient there, which she didn’t know. Just as Fester is trying to use the code from the parrot on the maintenance door, Dr. Fairburn arrives with the guards and they knock him out. When he comes round, he’s in a straitjacket with Slurp as his cellmate.

Thing returns and tells Wednesday everything that’s happening at Willow Hill. She sends him back to keep an eye on Fester while she works out how to get him out. Wednesday tells Agnes they’re going to break into Willow Hill with Miss Capri while she teaches her lesson. Meanwhile, Wednesday explains that Thing has made friends with Louise, the lunch lady, who is giving him information about where Fester is being held. Wednesday wants Agnes to distract the guard when she arrives in the car, then she’ll find Fester’s contact, get Fester out and find Lois. Enid wants to know what her part in the plan is. She tells her to anonymously tip off Sheriff Santiago if she’s caught to get her to go to Willow Hill.

As Miss Capri heads out, Wednesday hides in her car boot. Agnes knocks on the guard’s door and then goes invisible, sneaking in when she checks outside. When the guard heads out to check Miss Capri’s car, Agnes sets off an explosion in the guard station. It distracts him long enough for Wednesday to sneak out of the boot and crouch alongside the car, using it as cover to go past the gate. Louise lets Wednesday in.

Miss Capri arrives at her class and plays them the piano. Meanwhile, Louise wheels along a dinner cart with Wednesday hiding inside. They approach Fester’s cell and Wednesday sneaks the ID off the guard. She uses it to break inside, walks past Slurp unbothered, and frees Fester. They leave the door open and Slurp’s chains are break free off the wall. At the same time, Marilyn is being led by the guards to get moved back to prison and Slurp jumps out and starts eating one of the guards while the other tries to stop him. Marilyn runs off and passes Wednesday and Fester in the corridor. As Miss Capri plays, the security alarm halts her music. A guard tells Dr. Fairburn that the zombie is on the loose. She says everyone needs to get outside and wheels Augustus off.

Wednesday and Fester arrive back at the maintenance door and he uses the code to open it. Inside, there’s clearly scuff marks on the floor from the bookcase moving along it. Wednesday pulls it and it unveils a secret passageway. There’s words on the wall: “Long-term Outcast Integration Study”, LOIS. They follow the staircase downstairs. There’s cells filled with the ‘dead’ patients from the obituaries. In one room, a woman is curled up in the back corner and tells them to leave her alone. The one-eyed crow arrives along with the hoodie figure. Wednesday thinks it’s Fairburn. It is in fact Dr. Fairburn’s administrator, Judi, holding a gun.

Judi reveals that Dr. Fairburn actually works for her. While Fairburn is the public face of the institution, Judi continues her father’s work. She’s Augustus Stonehurst’s daughter, which is how she knew about the secret passages at Nevermore since her father worked there and used them to visit the aviary he built her in Iago Tower. She says her father loved Outcasts so much that he wanted to be one. She says they are trying to extract their abilities to give to Normies and reveals while she was born a Normie, thanks to her father’s work, she’s an Avian. Fester thinks it’s wrong that he experimented on his own daughter, but Judi says she volunteered. She says Augustus wanted to be a DaVinci, but his body couldn’t take it. As she talks, Fester powers up his electricity to fire at her. When he lets it go, all the lights go out at Willow Hill.

The power cut releases the patients Judi has held hostage and they begin to attack her, but she manages to escape. Wednesday notices the female patient hasn’t left her cell. She goes to her and says she’s going to get her out of there. Meanwhile, all the patients are out of their cells, running around the corridors. Marilyn finds a dead guard and uses his keys to get her chains off. The guards try to shoot down Slurp, but their bullets do nothing.

Marilyn goes to Tyler and breaks him out. She tells him she promised she’d get him out of there, but he’s angry. Marilyn pleads that Wednesday is the real enemy and she’s there in Willow Hill. Tyler says he’ll deal with her after he’s dealt with Marilyn. She again pleads that she’s the only one that’s ever loved him and unlocked his true potential. He says she did, so he’ll give her a five second headstart. She runs as he lets out the Hyde. He chases her through the corridors before impaling her with his claws. He slams her against the wall, dead.

Outside, Fester and Louise kiss in the rain and he leaves. Around them, patients continue to escape. Dr. Fairburn wheels Augustus to her room and pulls a gun from her desk. She can hear someone, but not see them. The lightning reveals Slurp is there and he eats her. Then, he turns on Augustus. Before eating him too, he says: “Hello, old friend.”

Meanwhile, as Wednesday leads the patient through the corridors they come across the Hyde. Wednesday tells the woman to go, so she does. The Hyde charges at her and she stands there, before her body is thrown through the window and she falls far to the ground outside. The police arrive and they open fire on the Hyde, but he escapes. Thing pokes at a bloodied Wednesday on the floor and Wednesday muses internally, just as her mother warned her, that she’s made everything much worse.

The episode begins on Thing getting pampered since Gomez and Morticia felt bad for forgetting his birthday. They discuss the fundraising committee and Morticia tells Gomez she called Mama and invited her to come, but she wouldn't answer. To help distract her, Gomez plays music and they dance. Meanwhile, someone breaks in upstairs, though with her signature black boots it’s seemingly Wednesday. They head into a chest and pull out a box. To this, Morticia seems to sense someone’s there and heads upstairs. As Wednesday opens the box, the note inside reads: “Nice try, Wednesday. Your loving mother.” Morticia opens the door and finds Wednesday.

Wednesday is looking for Goody’s book of spells. She says she wants to make her case for why she needs it and she describes her recent vision where she’s responsible for Enid’s death. She explains the graveyard and the crows. She then reveals the crows killed Galpin and his partner. Morticia muses if it’s an Avian. But, Wednesday says she just needs to find out what’s going on before Enid dies.

Morticia says the visions are unreliable, but Wednesday argues she’s mastered her ability and it shows her exactly what she needs, but now it's gone. Morticia says she’ll never give her the book back and argues she hasn’t mastered anything. She tells her the book is full of shortcuts and that it'll cause her pain, not answers. Again, she says she sounds like Ophelia and that she won’t fail her like her mother failed her sister.

At her dorm, Wednesday inspects Galpin’s eye and stares at his locked phone. Enid is panicking about packing for her overnight camping trip. She tries to invite Wednesday, but she’s not interested in coming. She says Enid needs to break things off with Ajax, since she’s now with Bruno. Enid goes to look for her bikini top that’s gone missing and Wednesday tells Thing she won’t tell her about the vision of her death. To this, Agnes appears from hiding and reveals she hid Enid’s top. Again, Agnes offers to help and Wednesday tells her to stalk someone else.

At the Hummer’s Shed, Slurp has returned. Eugene notes he looks different though and Pugsley tells him to look inside his skull because he looks like he’s regrowing his brain. Eugene notes it’s coming back at hyperspeed. Pugsley says the mystery meat must be helping. Pugsley thinks Slurp is trying to say his first word and suddenly a long black tongue comes out of his mouth and he lunges for Eugene. Pugsley uses his electricity to keep him tamed. Eugene argues he’s too dangerous now and that they can’t leave him alone while they go camping. Pugsley says he’s got it covered.

At Galpin’s funeral, only Dr. Fairburn and Sheriff Santiago are in attendance. Wednesday arrives and the Sheriff warns her that visiting Tyler won’t help her and she needs to stay away from Galpin and Bradbury’s killer. She asks Dr. Fairburn if Galpin came to visit Tyler and she says once, but he transformed into the Hyde in seconds and they had to use the shock collar for five minutes. Wednesday reveals she thinks the killer is an Avian. She says they have no Avian patients at Willow Hill. As Wednesday leaves, the crow with the one eye is watching.

Bianca arrives at the Inn at Apple Hollow. She uses her siren song to get the receptionist to give her the key to room 302. She says to not disturb the guest and that she was never there. Inside, Bianca greets her mom. She asks her mom if she’s been out, but she’s been watching the news of the Morning Song compound being raided. She says Gideon wasn’t there. Bianca says the only way her mom was leaving that cult was in handcuffs or a body bag. Her mom blames herself saying that Gideon only married her to get her to help him recruit people and steal their money. Bianca says that she’s out now and she got the evidence to prove Gideon is a fraud while Bianca used her siren song to get the FBI to do the raid. She tells her mom they’ll find Gideon and arrest him. Then, they can be free.

At Nevermore, Wednesday goes to see Agnes and asks her how she unlocked Galpin’s phone. She helps her by using her shape-shifting friend, Josephine, to transform into Galpin and unlock the face ID. Agnes reveals she took what she could from Galpin’s home before the police could. She hands her a box of things and Wednesday dismisses the pair of them.

First, Wednesday listens to the voicemail Bradbury left Galpin about the Bullpen. She searches through the box and finds a picture of a cabin, it’s marked as ‘The Bullpen’ in Pine Crest, 2015. She gets a map of Jericho and Thing locates Pine Crest. It’s over the water from Camp Jericho, so she decides she’ll go on the camping trip with Enid. She tells Thing to pack weapons.

Principal Dort gathers the students in the grounds and tells them the buses to the campaign trip have arrived. Enid orders a drink and Ajax approaches. He tries to help her with her luggage, but Bruno steps in. Miss Capri interrupts and Enid says she’ll catch up with Ajax at the camp grounds. Miss Capri says she was just trying to help Enid out, but they’ll need to go over some rules since the trip is during a full moon. Wednesday and Agnes appear and Enid is upset to learn they’re working together now. Principal Dort wants to know why Wednesday has decided to attend and she says someone always dies in the woods.

As the school arrives at Camp Jericho, Wednesday finds Pugsley dragging along a coffin. He says he’s smuggling gasoline and flares and kicks the coffin as Slurp grunts inside. Suddenly, Gomez arrives and he reveals he’s a parent chaperone. Then, Morticia steps out of the car, too. To this, Wednesday walks away. At their campsite, Gomez tells Morticia maybe she should give Wednesday the book, but she refuses. Eugene is camping with Pugsley and asks why bottle rockets are set up around their tent, Pugsley says it’s an early warning system. Inside, Slurp is chained to the coffin. Eugene says he refuses to sleep with a zombie, but they’re disturbed by Gomez. He brings them some snacks, but they won’t let him inside the tent.

Principal Dort is welcoming everyone to camp and reveals for the next two days, they'll call it Camp Outcast. He says there’s no cellphones or normies. But, they’re disturbed by a group led by Ron Kruger. He says he reserved the campground six months ago for his annual camp. He shows Principal Dort his signed contract. To which, Dort shows his. They say it’s double booked. But, both refuse to leave. Wednesday blows her airhorn and says if they want the campground, they can fight them for it. Whoever loses, heads home. Kruger agrees.

Principal Dort announces the Cadets vs. Outcast color war. Each side has a team zephyr. They have ten members each, divided into defenders and attackers. The defenders hold the opposing team’s zephyr hostage and the attackers try to recapture it. Once they get it, they fire a flare. Then, they have to race to the lookout tower. To win, they must place their zephyr on the tripod at the top. Nevermore want a Nightshades team, but Enid and Bruno want in. While Ajax tries to refuse, the others let them.

The game plan is to stone and siren anyone who gets near them and the rest will attack. Wednesday is determined to win so she can visit the Bullpen. Kruger instructs his cadets and says they can use unsanctioned military supplies against them. He asks cadet Bailey to lead the strike squad. The teams split up into the woods. The defending cadets put on headphones and Bianca realizes she can’t siren them. An attacking cadet fires an arrow at Ajax’s beanie, taking it off and revealing his snakes that turns the other defender into stone. They put a bag over Ajax’s his head and take him away. Bailey grabs the zephyr and fires the flare.

Wednesday instructs Thing to call in the hounds, so Enid and Bruno charge in, but they’re taken out by tear gas as the defenders wear gas masks. Wednesday gets Thing to signal in air support and Eugene uses the bees to attack. The defenders drop to the ground and Wednesday walks into the tear gas, unaffected, and takes the zephyr. Bianca fires the flare. Bailey and Wednesday race back to the tower and Bailey gets there first. As he races up the stairs, Wednesday shoots an arrow down from the cliff above. She rides in on a zipwire, kicking Bailey off the top and dropping his zephyr to the ground, placing her own zephyr and winning the contest.

Wednesday heads out to Galpin’s cabin with Thing, but on her way out, Principal Dort congratulates her on the win. Kruger speaks with his cadets and tells them they’re going to recapture Camp Jericho that evening.

Wednesday finds Galpin's cabin as the rest of the students gather round the campfire. She breaks in and notices paper sticking out from behind a mirror. She pulls it to unveil several newspaper cuttings about Outcasts that have died at Willow Hill, dating back more than 15 years. All the cuttings point back to the name Lois. Wednesday tries to use her psychic ability, but it still doesn’t work. She plans to get Goody’s book back so she can use it again.

Round the campfire, Morticia tells Principal Dort she’s reached out to her mother. But, she wouldn’t take her call. He says they should invite her to campus. Morticia says she manipulates every situation, but Dort pushes that she should try again. Meanwhile, Ajax finally speaks to Enid. He wants to know what happened and Enid says her feelings have changed and that she’s not the same person she was before summer. Ajax says he wishes they could’ve talked about it before she moved on without him. He’s upset and walks away. As Enid walks away, the cadets in camouflage advance.

Wednesday goes to see Morticia in her campsite. She says she’s giving her one last chance to return Goody’s book to her and when she refuses, Wednesday challenges her to a duelo-a-ciegas, a crossing of blades in a blind duel. She accuses Wednesday of talking to Morticia’s mom given she used the same tactic against her and Ophelia. Wednesday says it has nothing to do with Grandmama. Morticia accepts the challenge.

Kruger continues to instruct the cadets and tells them to tie up the Outcasts. They say they don’t think it’s a good idea and Kruger finds himself in the tent with Slurp, who eats him. It sets off the fireworks that Pugsley left, so him and Eugene head back to their tent. Meanwhile, Morticia and Wednesday prepare to duel. Whoever pierces the other’s glass heart first, wins. They place the glass hearts on their clothing. Morticia says if she wins, she’ll burn the book. They place a tie round their eyes to blind themselves and begin.

Back at the tent, Pugsley and Eugene find Kruger dead. Agnes appears and says she’s trying to impress Wednesday by looking after Pugsley and keeping him alive. They need to find Slurp. Morticia and Wednesday continue to fight.

Slurp finds an axe and heads into a cabin. Inside, Gomez is showering. He doesn’t hear Slurp come in as he listens to music. Gomez thinks it’s Morticia as he breaks in the door trying to reach him with his tongue. Pugsley turns up just in time and uses his electricity. Principal Dort and the students gather round at the noise and run away when they see Slurp. He heads further into the woods. Morticia breaks Wednesday’s glass heart just as Wednesday throws her sword over Morticia’s shoulder into Slurp’s brain and pinning him to a tree. The police arrive and restrain Slurp and wheel him away. Kruger’s body is also taken away.

Wednesday watches as the one-eyed crow flies away and lands on a hooded figure’s shoulder. When the ambulance drives past, the figure is gone. Back at the dorm, Wednesday tries to make sense of Galpin’s newspaper cuttings and ponders who Lois is. A new patient is taken to Willow Hill and Judi informs Dr. Fairburn of their arrival. It’s Marilyn Thornhill.

Wednesday, the spine-chilling supernatural hit, returns to Netflix for season 2 part 1. This time round, Wednesday Addams returns to Nevermore Academy with her family in tow and brother Pugsley joining as a student.

But, while season 1 saw the end of old adversaries, the mystery continues with a dangerous stalker, a new era led by a new principal, and Wednesday's ongoing struggle to harness her psychic abilities.

Another year at Nevermore means another year of dark and spooky chaos and the Addams Family's world gets even more creepy. With new teachers and Principal Dort, there's a lot more horror to navigate in a season of two parts. Part 2 is coming on September 3. Spoilers to follow.

Here's a recap of everything that happened in Wednesday season 2 episode 2.

The episode begins on Wednesday’s vision in the graveyard. The crows circulate as she hears Enid screaming that she has died because of her. Suddenly, she wakes up with black tears dried on her face. Morticia is there and she says she’s worried about Wednedsay and tells her she knows the tears mean psychic exhaustion. Wednedsay says it's fine and Morticia tells her she sounds like Ophelia. Morticia wants Goody’s book of spells because she wants Wednesday to wait for her new guide, rather than jumping ahead. Wednesday say she doesn’t have the time to wait. Morticia warns her that she can’t bend the psychic ability or control it. Wednesday is angry that she’s stopping her.

Lurch drives Wednesday and Thing along and she recalls Galpin’s warning, Xavier’s painting and her vision of Enid’s death. She remembers the one-eyed bird in each one. She tells Lurch she needs to make a stop. She goes to Galpin’s house, but it’s boarded up and covered in graffiti. The door is open and inside, Galpin’s body is laying in his armchair with his eyes pecked out. As she looks in his open mouth, crows start to fly out and swarm around the room. They smash through the windows and fly out, except for the one-eyed red one that flies out last.

Once they’ve gone, she touches Galpin's body to try and use her psychic ability, but she doesn’t see anything. Before she can try anything further, the police arrive and Sheriff Santiago arrests her. Wednesday is taken to the police station for questioning. She tells Sheriff Santiago that Galpin invited her there and Sheriff Santiago reveals that Bradbury had called Galpin right before he died. She says Galpin wasn’t answering his phone when she tried to call, so they went round. But, the phone has vanished.

Wednesday says she didn’t take his phone. She explains Galpin’s son, Tyler, is a psychopath who hates his father. She muses that Tyler may have orchestrated it, but Sheriff Santiago says Tyler is locked away at Willow Hill. Gomez enters and as Sheriff Santiago tries to dismiss him as Wednesday’s father, he says he’s also her lawyer. He tells the Sheriff she’ll need a court order to speak to Wednesday again and they leave.

On the drive home, Gomez wants to know what Wednesday was doing at Galpin’s house. She tells him that she saw Galpin the day before and he told her he was working on a case. She then says she wants Morticia to go back home, but Gomez says they’re staying. Wednesday asks Gomez about Aunt Ophelia, but he tells her it’s not his story to tell. The next day, Eugene catches Pugsley leaving the Hummers Shed, his bee hideout. Pugsley shows him inside and reveals he’s chained up the boy from the Skull Tree. He shows Eugene the clockwork heart and keeps the boy under control with his electrokinesis. There’s a hole in his skull and his brain is missing. They note he’s hungry and Eugene hands him a pot of honey. He eats it and then throws up over both of them. Pugsley says he’ll call him Slurp.

Wednesday talks to Thing and tells him she doesn’t know what’s happening to her psychic ability. She tells him about the vision of Enid’s death and the birds. As she enters the dorm, there’s a trail of blood and Enid’s lying on the balcony with her throat cut. Enid laughs and eats the blood, laughing that it’s just jam. She tells Wednesday it’s Prank Day. Wednesday isn’t amused and Enid says she was getting her back for the fake eyeball she left on Enid’s pillow.

Wednesday says she recognises it and tells Enid a bird must’ve dropped it off. Enid wants to talk about the black tears, but Wednesday tells her it’s fine. Enid picks up her phone and sees the texts from Wednesday’s stalker. She tells her to call the number and it goes to Donovan Galpin’s voicemail. She tells Enid that Galpin was murdered, so it must be his killer. Wednesday says Enid should stay in the dorm with Thing until they figure it out, but she says she’s got a driver’s ed lesson to get to. When Enid leaves, Wednesday tries to use the eyeball with her psychic ability, but it doesn’t work.

Across Nevermore, the students are engaging in Prank Day. Ajax watches on as Enid flirts with Bruno. Eugene offers him a jar of tiger fleas and uses his power to unleash them on Bruno. It cheers him up and he unleashes his snakes, freezing Pugsley and Eugene to stone. Principal Dort enters the courtyard with Dr. Orloff. Wednesday approaches and Principal Dort expresses that he loved Wednesday’s display at the pyre. She asks whether they know of anyone who can control birds and Dr. Orloff asks if she means an Avian. He says they haven’t had a student like that in ten years.

At Rotwood Cottage, Bianca is visiting Morticia. They’re discussing their roles on the fundraising committee. They talk about their relationships; Morticia with Wednesday and Bianca with her mom. Bianca says she’s always admired Morticia’s mom, building Frump Mortuaries, one of the most successful Outcast-owned businesses. Bianca tells Morticia she thinks Principal Dort wants a big donation from Morticia’s mom and shows her the file she’s been given. Morticia laughs and refuses to ask her.

Eugene and Pugsley go to visit the boy from the Skull Tree. Pugsley gives him a mystery meat sandwich from the cafeteria and he eats it ravenously. As they leave, the boy uses his strength to start tugging on the chain attached to the wall. Meanwhile, Wednesday tells Thing to watch Enid while she goes to speak to Tyler about his dad. Before she goes, she takes Enid’s driver’s ed consent form and disappears out the window as Enid comes back looking for it. Morticia arrives and wants Goody’s book of spells from Thing.

Wednesday walks out the grounds and pretends to the driving instructor that she's Enid. He asks if she has experience driving and she recalls being a getaway driver for Uncle Fester. As he begins to explain how to drive, she starts to speed off. But, he stops her with his own pedals. In the wing mirror, the instructor sees the boy from the Skull Tree at the gates. While he’s distracted, Wednesday cuts the wires to his pedals and drives them away.

Elsewhere, Morticia is arguing with Thing and he explains that they treat him like a servant, rather than family. She apologizes and he heads into his house, shutting the door.

Wednesday drives the instructor’s car all the way to Willow Hill. She asks the security guard to see Tyler and he jokes she’s a fan girl.

She hands over a file and tells him to call his superior and tell them Wednesday Addams is there.

She meets with Dr. Fairburn's administrator, Judi, who says Wednesday has filled out the forms well, but Dr. Fairburn will ultimately decide if she can see Tyler. She explains she’s the chief psychiatrist there.

She brings over Dr. Fairburn’s book, "Unlocking the Outcast Mind" and Wednesday asks if she’s an Outcast, but she isn’t. Dr. Fairburn enters and invites Wednesday to walk with her. She asks Wednesday if she’s there because of Donovan Galpin’s death and explains that Tyler is very uncooperative. She also explains that Marilyn Thornhill denies she’s Tyler’s master, but she’s holding her in a separate facility to test the bond. Dr. Fairburn wants Wednesday’s help with getting through to Tyler and leads her to his maximum security cell. She tells her to push the red button on the wall if she feels in danger.

Wednesday enters and Tyler is chained to the wall with a collar round his neck. He says he knew she would come to see him sooner or later and that she fell in love with the monster inside of him. As Tyler gets angry, he starts to transform but the guard uses a button to activate his collar, keeping the Hyde under control. She tells Tyler his father was murdered, as well as his old partner, Carl Bradbury. He realizes she wants his help, but he refuses. Instead, he tells Wednesday to say hi to Enid for him and that he’ll kill her next time he sees her. She tells him the only reason Marilyn Thornhill used him is because he’s a nobody. He tries to change again and the guard shocks him. He screams as she leaves.

Back at Nevemore, Dr. Orloff is holding his class. Pugsley electrocutes him and the students laugh. Eugene sneaks in and tells Pugsley they’ve got a problem. He tells him Slurp has escaped. Meanwhile, Enid brings Bruno up to her dorm to study. She notices a gift on the floor addressed to Thing. She opens his house and notes he’s been drinking, although can’t understand how.

Inside, the present is Thing’s mugshot from Normal, Illinois. He’s called Fernando Fingertips. It’s his birthday present from Uncle Fester. Enid is sad the Addams family forgot his birthday and says the pack will take him out for dinner to celebrate. Suddenly, Enid turns around and panics as something has happened to Bruno. At the same time, a power locks Thing’s house so he can’t escape.

Bianca goes to see Principal Dort and tells him she’s handed the donor list to Morticia. She tells him that Morticia and her mother are estranged. He wants Hester Frump and tells Bianca to be more persuasive, ordering her to use her siren ability on her. Instead, Bianca tries to use it on him to tell him not to coerce her again. But, it doesn’t work. He shows her his pocket watch made of Corinthian coral, meaning he can’t be affected. He again tells her to use her gift on Morticia.

As Wednesday arrives back at the dorm, she sees Thing trapped inside his house. Letting him out, she notices Enid’s discarded bag and the phone ringing inside. A distorted voice asks if it’s got her attention and tells her the game has just begun and she has 30 minutes to find Enid and can’t involve anyone else. A postcard is slipped under the door with a drawing of a heart on the front and the words: “Play dead” on the back.

Meanwhile, Enid wakes up chained to a chair, back-to-back with Bruno in the top of the Iago clock tower. It’s been closed off for years after a freak electrical storm. The chains don’t work against Enid’s claws. Enid thinks it’s Ajax pulling a prank on them, but she’s startled as a knife drops to the floor. Looking above them, there’s hundreds of knives dangling from the roof. They realize it’s not a prank. While Wednesday heads off to look, she runs into Miss Capri. She wants Wednesday for the orchestra. She tells her to come to rehearsal on Friday and leaves. Then, Wednesday realizes the letters in ‘Play dead’ aren’t letters at all, they’re notes.

She then deciphers the heart on the postcard means organ and she goes to the organ to play the notes, D-E-A-D. It opens a secret door and she heads inside with Thing. Meanwhile, Enid apologizes to Bruno saying it must be to do with Wednesday. She thinks they might be able to wiggle out the chains if they find the right way. As Wednesday heads through the tunnel, a hooded, masked figure appears behind her and disappears. The mask is discarded on the floor with the words: “Clock’s ticking” inside. S

She finds a lift and realizes they’re in Iago tower. Enid and Bruno tumble onto the floor and Bruno gets nervous. Enid helps him breathe to calm him down and they end up kissing. Wednesday arrives and tells Thing to pick their locks. But he triggers the knives to fall and gets himself trapped. The clock starts to move and the mechanism moves the knives closer and closer to Enid and Bruno.

A typewriter is waiting for Wednesday with the words: “What don’t you see? Type your answer to set your friends free.” Piles of books surround her and she notes the authors and realizes she needs to find the missing book. She notes The Invisible Man by HG Wells is missing and types it in. The mechanism stops just in time and reverses.

Hands begin to clap and as they appear, the rest of the person appears, one of the students that asked for her autograph. She wishes her a happy prank day and introduces herself as Agnes DeMille, Wednesday’s number one superfan. She hands over the keys and Thing unties Enid and Bruno. She explains she had help from other DaVincis after blackmailing them with incriminating Snapchat photos. She wanted Wednesday's attention, so she came up with the game. Wednesday wants to know why she killed Galpin and put the eyeball on Enid’s pillow. Agnes says she didn’t do that. She just wanted to be friends and hands her Galpin’s phone. She says she could help her, but they leave.

At Rotwood Cottage, Bianca goes to see Morticia. She uses her siren song and tells Morticia to invite her mother to the gala to secure a large donation. She agrees. Then, Bianca leaves. Elsewhere, Wednesday apologizes to Thing for forgetting his birthday and gives him an antique thumbscrew. She says he can use it on her to torture her. He doesn’t want to, but he’s concerned about Enid. Wednesday agrees and thinks she needs to regain her psychic ability to help save her. Thing then tells her that Morticia took Goody’s book of spells and she notices the crow with the red eye staring at her from the balcony. It flies off.

Meanwhile, Slurp from the Skull Tree is wandering in the woods. The driving instructor from earlier is driving through, leaving Principal Dort a voicemail telling him that Enid Sinclair has stopped him wanting to teach Nevermore students. He runs over Slurp, but when he goes out to check, he’s gone. Instead, Slurp comes up behind him and eats him.

Here's a recap of everything that happened in Wednesday season 2 episode 1.

The episode opens on Wednesday tied up and choked with black tears running down her face. She explains she’s in a serial killer’s basement and has been all summer as she sits at a dinner table filled with porcelain dolls for guests. Wednesday says the killer thinks she’s his next victim. It cuts to six weeks earlier.

Wednesday is practicing her psychic skills using Goody’s book of spells. She explains she’s now got control over her abilities, so is focusing on an obsession she’s had since she was six. A flashback shows a young Wednesday in a classroom giving a presentation on her favorite serial killer, the Kansas City Scalper. In the present day, she’s tasked Thing with getting a piece of evidence from one of his crimes so she can psychically locate him. Thing returns with a rubber duck encased in a large clear bowling ball, evidence from the killer’s 11th victim.

She locates him, but first she has to travel by plane to get there. At Newark Airport, Wednesday is flagged in security for her barrage of concealed weapons; knives, a taser, a knuckle duster and more. The guards then flag her bag and pull Thing out. She explains she’s heading to an embalmers convention. The guard is more concerned about the sun cream she’s packed, over the allowed limit.

In Kansas City, a man leaves his home and gets inside his van: “Chet’s Pooch Pampering”. Wednesday frightens him, popping up unnoticed, and asks him if his serial killer services are listed online, too. But, when she goes to taser him, he grabs her arm and her head is immediately thrown backwards and black tears pour from her eyes as she imagines the dolls around the table.

He enters his basement where Wednesday is tied up and wheels over his instruments for scalping. He tells her he’s made her a gift as he pulls out a small Wednesday doll. As he pulls the rope tied around her mouth down, she tells him she has her own handiwork to show him and looks to one of the dolls round the table. Its head turns and it opens its eyes. Suddenly, its head explodes and Thing jumps out, grabbing onto the man’s face.

Thing beats him up as Wednesday escapes from her ropes. Thing then points to the black tears on Wednesday’s face and she dismisses him, saying it’s a minor psychic glitch. Wednesday picks up a knife as the man wakes up and tells him it’s time to play dolls.

In Wednesday’s room back at home, she has the front page of the Kansas City Sentinel framed with the headline: “Scalper Scalped” as the killer has been arrested. She looks through Goody’s book of spells and finds nothing to do with the black tears she's suffered with. Morticia enters and tells her that Lurch has packed the car and it’s time to head back to Nevermore Academy.

Gomez, Morticia and Pugsley accompany Wednesday and as they drive along, Pugsley practices his own ability, the same as Uncle Fester; electrokinesis. Pugsley expresses that it’s weird it skipped Gomez and Morticia explains being an Outcast isn’t about what you can do. Wednesday is interested in his ability, purely on how it might help her in the future. She tells Pugsley there’s a stop sign coming up and he must hit the center of the O, or she’ll eject him. He does it and in the car’s wake, a huge crash happens resulting in a fiery explosion.

They pass a car heading the other way which drives into the woods and pulls up next to a man waiting on a picnic bench. He’s got champagne on ice and romantic music playing. A man is higher up in the woods, taking photos secretively. He notes as a woman gets out of the car and runs into the man’s arms for a kiss. The man keeps taking photos. He turns around and sees a bird with a red eye watching him. More and more birds arrive and they start to attack him. He gets inside his blue van, but they continue to smash into the windows. He calls someone and says they’re onto him and if he doesn’t make it, then the evidence is safe at the bullpen. All the birds are suddenly inside his van and they attack him.

Wednesday and the rest of the Addams family arrive at Nevermore. Wednesday tells Morticia she’s going to control the chaos this time round. Pugsley is joining Nevermore, too. As Wednesday walks in, the other students take her photo and ask for her autograph. Bianca walks over and uses her ability to bid the students away. She explains to Wednesday that she’s popular now after she saved the school and that if she tries to ignore how popular she is, it’ll only get worse.

Barry Dort, the new principal, comes over and introduces himself. He’s carrying stickers that say: “Outcast Pride” and he’s wearing a badge to match. He tells her he’s reinstating the Founder’s Pyre ceremony, an old Outcast tradition. He invites her to be the student of honor and she dismisses him. He pleads and says he wants her to help return Nevermore to its glory days. But, while he says he doesn’t want to speak ill of the dead, referring to Weems, Wednesday says she’d rather demonize the living.

Wednesday and Thing head up to her old dorm and she’s met with drawings of her all over the door and students partying inside. Enid greets her and she asks everyone else to leave. Bruno, from her pack, stops to talk to Enid before he goes and she gets flustered. Enid wants to talk to Wednesday about their summer vacations. She hands Wednesday a gift from Lupinpalooza; a t-shirt with a Beowulf pun on it. Wednesday gives Enid a gift, too; one of the lifestyle dolls wearing the human hair from the Kansas City Scalper.

Enid tells Wednesday of her goals for the year. She wants to secure her place in the pack, become dance troupe captain and join the Nightshades. Wednesday wants to avoid people and work on her new Viper de la Muerte novel. She shows Enid her last novel which a publisher has littered with notes. There’s a knock on the door. It’s Ajax looking for Enid, but she hides and Wednesday lies for her. He hands over a pink fluffy unicorn.

After he’s gone, Enid tells Wednesday she’s not sure how she feels about Ajax anymore since she’s changed so much. But, their conversation is disturbed when Wednesday opens her closet door and a crossbow fires out an arrow directly at them. Attached is a photograph with the note: “Welcome back, Wednesday. I’m still watching.” The photo is of her talking to Barry Dort earlier that day. Wednesday tries to use her psychic abilities holding the photograph, but a black tear leaks from her eye and she tells Thing she didn’t see the stalker.

Gomez and Morticia take Pugsley to his new dorm. His roommate, Eugene, tries to introduce himself, shaking hands and getting electrocuted by Pugsley. Morticia introduces herself to Eugene’s mother, Janet. Janet says her and Sue weren’t sure they wanted Eugene to come back to Nevermore, but he wanted to. Pugsley asks what it was like getting gutted by a Hyde to which Eugene says he still has nightmares.

As their parents leave, Pugsley asks about Eugene’s bug collection and he explains that he could only control bees to begin with, but his powers are going further. He shows him how he can make them form into the words: “Bug off.” Pugsley quips about eating them and Eugene tells him they’re his pets, not food. Pugsley then tries to invite himself along to meet Eugene’s friend, but Eugene makes excuses. He tells him he only agreed to be his roommate because he likes Wednesday. Ajax arrives and explains that he’s the new resident advisor and welcomes them to Caliban Hall.

As Wednesday walks through the grounds, the students continue to fawn over her. The Addams family are talking to Principal Dort. He’s asking Morticia to be the chair of the Gala Fundraising Committee, since Vincent Thorpe won’t be doing it anymore after Xavier’s false murder accusation. He says Vincent pulled both his funding and Xavier from Nevermore, to which Wednesday is surprised to hear. Instead, he’s going to Reichenbach Academy in Switzerland. As Gomez and Morticia talk about leaving, Principal Dort says he wants to keep them closer.

It cuts to Rotwood Cottage. Principal Dort has brought the Addams family there and tells them Marilyn Thornhill lived there before, but since her arrest, it’s free and they can stay in it for the night. If Morticia chooses to be chair, she can stay there whenever she pleases. Morticia tells Wednesday she won’t do it if it makes her uncomfortable, but Wednesday says she’s always uncomfortable.

Morticia then tries to speak to Wednesday about Goody being gone and how she could help her instead and be her new guide. Wednesday says she’s a Dove and Morticia is a Raven, but Morticia says she’s had experience with Ravens. Wednesday turns and asks if she means her mom’s sister, Aunt Ophelia. Morticia says she reminds her a lot of her. Wednesday tells her not to worry about her, but to worry about Pugsley instead. As she leaves, Morticia tells Gomez she knows Wednesday is hiding things from her.

As Wednesday and Thing walk through the woods, she dismisses him. But then, she hears a police siren. Looking through the trees, she sees them gathering around the blue van that the man was attacked in by the birds. The police remove his body, his eyes have been fully removed, and they address him as Carl Bradbury, a local private investigator. The officer points out the two witnesses to Sheriff Santiago, the couple he was taking photos of, who are speaking to the police.

He explains the man, Greg, is the manager of the Piggly Wiggly and Debbie is one of his cashiers. The crows' bodies all lie dead around the van. Wednesday approaches Sheriff Santiago and notes her promotion. As the Sheriff walks off, Wednesday spots a man in a hood watching who quickly runs away when he notices her looking.

Wednesday chases him through the woods and kicks him in the face, revealing his identity; ex-Sheriff Galpin. He says he knows the victim and that they were working a case together. He tells her that Bradbury stumbled on something which he said could affect all Outcasts. When Wednesday is surprised by him caring, Galpin says his son, Tyler the Hyde, is an Outcast. He tries to blame Ms. Thornhill, but Wednesday corrects him. He wants her help and notes she was drawn to the crime scene, so she’s clearly interested, too. He tells her to find him if she changes her mind about helping and he looks up at the crow with the red eye watching him. She hesitates then walks away.

That evening, Ajax is telling stories by torchlight. He tells the students around him that it’s Caliban Hall tradition to recite the story of the Skull Tree. It begins at a hospital. A brilliant boy with a fragile heart. He stayed in bed all day, drawing the machines he wanted to build. One of which was a new heart for himself and while it worked, it also changed him. He was cold and ambitious and came to Nevermore to show off his skills. Until, he started inventing more dangerous things, which ended up killing him. Legend has it that the boy is buried at the foot of the Skull Tree in an unmarked grave. But, if you put your ear to the hollow left eye, you’ll hear his heart ticking. Pugsley listens and smiles as Ajax proposes that only the bravest would go to try and find it.

Bianca goes to see Principal Dort. He tells her he’s been watching her and wants to use her charisma for good. He says he’d like her to be the fundraising gala’s student liaison. Bianca says she doesn’t have the time, but Principal Dort threatens that if the school doesn’t have funds then he might have to let some of the scholarship students go, like Bianca. He tells her he knows how people feel about sirens, but he doesn’t agree with them. He thinks instead she should use her powers for the cause. He asks her again and asks for her to decide by tomorrow. At the dorm, Enid heads out to the balcony and talks to Thing. Thing is sad that Wednesday was mad at him and Enid gives reassurance before introducing him to a home she’s made for him.

Wednesday plays her cello as Morticia sits in the cottage reading her sister, Ophelia’s, diary. Inside, sketches of a screaming woman with black tears down her face. At Caliban Hall, as Eugene sleeps, Pugsley looks at a map to find the Skull Tree. He electrocutes one of Eugene’s spiders back to life. Thing finds a ring in his new home, with a chess piece symbol, and puts it on.

Galpin sits at home drinking, watching home videos of his son. And, a hooded figure cuts out the eyes of Wednesday from a photo. As Wednesday plays her music, she falters at the intensity, and a woman walks in. She introduces herself as Miss Capri, the new head of music. Wednesday notes she’s heard of her before given her fascination for child prodigies. Miss Capri tells Wednesday it wasn’t her hand that stopped the music, but Wednesday says she doesn’t want a lesson. Miss Capri carries on and tells her not to try to control it. Wednesday insists she doesn’t succumb to chaos.

The next day, select students are building the pyre with their skills. Principal Dort asks Morticia if she wants to be chair, but she says she’s still thinking about her decision. He says he’s looking for the perfect liaison and Bianca approaches and says she’ll do it. He invites her to the pyre that evening. As Wednesday returns to her dorm, Enid reads her a letter sent from Xavier. He says he tried to text her on the phone he gave her, to which it cuts to Wednesday boiling the phone in a pot, and continues with him giving her a gift; a painting of the red eyed crow sitting on a headstone.

He says in his letter that he doesn’t know why, but he can tell it’s connected to her. Enid invites her to the Founder’s Pyre and Wednesday notes Thing next to her typewriter. The page reads: “Read any good books lately?” She thinks of her novel and opens the drawer, but it’s gone. Instead, another note with the photo with her eyes cut out underneath reads: “Higher, higher, higher, I am demon of the fire and each blazing roof’s my pyre!” She realizes the stalker is going to burn her script at the pyre, her only copy. She goes to stop it.

At the Founder’s Pyre, Pugsley tells Eugene and his friends he’s going to sneak off to the Skull Tree and dig up the dead kid when the pyre is lit. No-one else wants to come. As Wednesday tells Thing to keep a lookout, students bump into her. She reaches into her pocket and it cuts her hand. She pulls out a note covered in razor blades, it reads: “If you don’t want your novel to go up in smoke, meet me under the pyre! P.S. I found a few more typos.” Wednesday finds a way inside and as Enid tries to stop her, she gets distracted by Ajax who wants to know what’s going on. She tries to make excuses and Bruno comes over to invite her to watch the pyre. But, she runs off to help Wednesday as she crawls into the bottom of the pyre.

Miss Capri opens the Founder’s Pyre and plays the piano as the choir sings. Principal Dort plays music and comes on dancing. He shouts to the crowd and tells them to celebrate a new era. Meanwhile, Enid shouts into the pyre to get Wednesday to come out. But, Wednesday crawls far enough inside to find her manuscript. Before she can get it, Principal Dort shoots fire to the pyre and lights it. At this, Puglsey creeps away. Wednesday, still inside, reaches her manuscript. The bird at the top of the pyre comes to life and burns brightly as it swoops down incredibly close to the crowd before exploding in the sky. The crowd cheers.

Wednesday continues to crawl out the pyre and Enid runs to Principal Dort and tells him she’s trapped inside. But, she walks out and towards the front of the crowd to which Principal Dort introduces her as the student of honor. He unveils a painting of Wednesday, Enid, Bianca and Eugene to commemorate them saving the school. He asks for words of inspiration and everyone chants her name. She heads to the stage and gives an empowering speech, but quickly turns sour on those cheering. She tells them she’s not their hero and that she only cares about herself. She tells Principal Dort to not put her on a pedestal as she burns the painting in front of everyone. Enid’s upset and Bianca laughs.

In the woods, Pugsley searches for the Skull Tree. When he finds it, he listens for the ticking heart, he hears it but a crow scares him as it flies out the eye. As he drops to the ground, he electrocutes the earth, bringing to life the corpse of the boy underneath. Pugsley smiles as the boy climbs out of the ground.

Meanwhile, as Wednesday walks away from Enid, Enid grabs her arm and it throws Wednesday’s head back bringing out black tears and she drops to the ground. Instead, she finds herself in a vision standing in a graveyard, surrounded by crows. One sits atop a headstone holding a white rose in its mouth. The headstone is for Enid and Wednesday hears Enid saying she died because of her. Suddenly, she turns round and a bloodied Enid strangles her. In the real world, Wednesday is convulsing on the floor and Morticia and Enid gather round her.

All episodes of Wednesday are available to stream on Netflix. Part 2 arrives on September 3.

Zach Cregger's Weapons has arrived in movie theaters to great acclaim — refer to WTW's Weapons review and the movie's 95% "Certified Fresh" score on Rotten Tomatoes as proof. If you're planning to watch Weapons this weekend, we definitely recommend you turn it into a double feature with Cregger's previous movie, Barbarian, which is streaming on Netflix. But you may want to hurry on that.

Barbarian is set to leave Netflix in the US at the end of the month, with the last day it'll be available to watch being Sunday, August 31. That means you only have a couple of weeks left before the movie heads to who knows where.

Showcasing a fun, unique new voice in the horror genre, here's why it's well worth your time to watch both of these movies as soon as possible.

Barbarian stars Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsgåd and Justin Long, and centers on the guests at an Airbnb house in a rundown Detroit neighborhood that hides some dark secrets. I won’t go any further into the movie’s plot because half the fun of it is the surprising places that Cregger takes the story.

I actually just caught up with Barbarian for the first time in anticipation of seeing Weapons, and the praise for Cregger's voice in horror from this movie was deserved. It's quite creepy to be sure, but it also has a dark sense of humor and a thoughtful idea over who the barbarian in the title truly refers to.

Cregger's follow-up, Weapons, lives up to the potential the director showed in Barbarian.

Starring Julia Garner, Josh Brolin and a solid ensemble, Weapons takes place in a small town in the aftermath of an entire elementary school class going missing and no one being able to figure out what happened, but suspicions fall on their teacher.

Cregger once again shows he's a master of creating an unsettling atmosphere, as from the first moment you're put on edge and it doesn't relieve itself one bit for the movie's two-hour runtime. That's because the secrets of this story are expertly revealed bit by bit to keep us engaged, with the movie's horror elements becoming more prominent the further we get along.

I personally would rank Barbarian ahead of Weapons right now, but they are both quite entertaining. They're must-watch for any horror fan, but even if it's not your favorite genre (it's not mine), they're still worth seeing if you appreciate good filmmaking.

Again, for the rest of August, Barbarian is only streaming on Netflix (subscription required), and we don’t yet know if it is immediately going to be heading to another streaming service in September after it leaves Netflix (though the movie is and will remain available via digital on-demand platforms).

So if you want to watch Barbarian on Netflix before or after watching Weapons, then you need to make the time before the month is out.

This is the first of two already announced seasons of the animated show on Hulu.

Bob Trevino Likes It (2025)

• "Certified Fresh" indie movie starring Barbie Ferreira and John Leguizamo premieres on August 5

Though Bob Trevino Likes It may have slid under the radar of many, those that have seen the indie dramedy have loved it, as evidenced by the movie's 95% "Certified Fresh" score from critics and 98% positive score from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Ferreira stars as a young woman who befriends a man online who shares the name of her father, forming a surprising but heartwarming connection.

The Monkey (2025)

• Horror comedy begins streaming on Hulu August 7

2025 has been a big year for Stephen King, as The Life of Chuck, The Institute and soon The Long Walk have all been adapted for the screen. But my personal favorite from these King offerings so far this year is the absurdly fun The Monkey. Theo James stars as twins whose lives have been tormented for years by a toy monkey that has been a part of a number of surprising deaths over the years. When the monkey resurfaces, they have to figure out how to stop it before someone else they love dies. If you're a fan of outrageous, gory deaths, then this will be a must-watch.

Ted Bundy: Dialogue with the Devil

• True crime docuseries centered around notorious serial killer lands on August 7

The crimes of Ted Bundy have been well documented, but did you know that after he was arrested he assisted in an investigation into another murderer? That is the focus on Ted Bundy: Dialogue with the Devil, as it recounts Bundy's work with Detective Robert Keppel looking for the Green River Killer. The docuseries features never-before-heard-tapes that give a rare insight into the mind of Ted Bundy.

FX's Necaxa

• The Welcome to Wrexham sibling show premieres on August 8

Welcome to Wrexham has documented one of the most incredible stories in sports the last few years, as actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac (nee McElhenney) have buoyed the Wrexham team and town. But can lightning strike twice?

That's the question in FX's Necaxa, where Reynolds and Mac offer their support to Eva Longoria as she helps a recently relocated Mexican soccer club and tries to lift if to success.

Shanghai Noon (2000)

• Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson comedy rides to Hulu on August 8

As Shanghai Noon, the classic western comedy starring Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson, celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, you'll be able to stream in on Hulu starting this week. Shanghai Noon is a great blend of the martial arts, western and comedy genres, with Chan and Wilson having great chemistry. The sequel, Shanghai Knights, also lands on Hulu this week, though if you're picking between the two, go with the original.

There have been few horror franchises this century as popular and successful as The Conjuring. But all good things come to an end, which is the case with The Conjuring: Last Rites, the 2025 new movie are set to mark the final chapter in this horror series.

Beginning with 2013’s The Conjuring, Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson have starred as real-life paranormal investigators Lorraine and Ed Warren, portraying them in three Conjuring movies and a couple of spin offs (the Annabelle and The Nun horror movies). But The Conjuring: Last Rites is based on one of the final investigations by the Warrens.

Playing first exclusively in movie theaters, The Conjuring: Last Rites premieres in the US, UK and elsewhere around the world on September 5.

As mentioned, Farmiga and Wilson return as the Warrens. Farmiga is an Oscar-nominated actress for Up in the Air, who is also known for The Departed. Wilson is also the star of another horror franchise, Insidious, as well as appearing in the Aquaman movies.

Also set to star in The Conjuring: Last Rites are Mia Tomlinson (The Beast Must Die) as Ed and Lorraine’s daughter Judy; Ben Hardy (Love at First Sight) as Judy’s boyfriend, Tony Spera; and Steve Coulter (Oppenheimer), who returns as Father Gordon.

Others in the cast include Rebecca Calder (House of the Dragon), Elliot Cowan (Suspect: The Shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes), Kíla Lord Cassidy (The Wonder), Beau Gadsdon (A Gentleman in Moscow), John Brotherton (Fuller House) and Shannon Kook (Reacher).

The Conjuring: Last Rites plot

Warner Bros. has not shared many details on the plot aside from this description:

“The Conjuring: Last Rites delivers another thrilling chapter of the iconic Conjuring cinematic universe, based on real events. Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson reunite for one last case as renowned, real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren in a powerful and spine-chilling addition to the global box office-breaking franchise.”

However, from what we see in the trailer we can infer that this movie is based on the Smurl family case, which took place in 1986 and followed a family that believed their house was possessed by demons. In the movie it looks like Ed and Lorraine discover that they have a past connection to the demon.

The script was written by Ian Goldberg & Richard Naing and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick.

The director for The Conjuring: Last Rites is someone well versed in the franchise, as Michael Chaves helms the picture. He’s previously directed two movies in the Conjuring franchise, 2021’s The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It and 2023’s The Nun II.

Together is now playing exclusively in movie theaters in the US. The movie is set to premiere in the UK in a couple of weeks on August 15.

Once you find the showtime that works best for you, you can purchase your Together ticket through Fandango as well.

With that said, it can be a lot to scroll through, so allow me to offer my humble services in helping you find the new movies on streaming that you are not going to want to miss.

The below list of movies is taken from the major streaming services: Apple TV Plus, Disney Plus, HBO Max, Hulu, Netflix, Paramount Plus, Peacock and Prime Video. I'm also specifically picking movies that are new to streaming this month — in this case, these are 12 movies that are landing on one of the major streamers for the first time, or coming back to streaming services after only being available via on-demand.

So without further ado, here are my picks for the 12 movies to stream in August.

The Departed (Netflix)

Martin Scorsese's The Departed will always have a special place in my heart, as this Best Picture winner was my first real introduction to the master filmmaker. I've of course watched as much of his filmography as I can since then, but The Departed sticks with me as it is fun, has some great performances (particularly from Leonardo DiCaprio and Jack Nicholson) and is layered with details that enrich repeat viewings (the use of X in the movie has been well documented). While Scorsese has a lot of things in the works (including The Devil in the White City), we don't know for sure when we're getting his next movie. So streaming The Departed is a good way to bide our time.

Eenie Meanie (Hulu)

Samara Weaving has starred in a number of fan-favorite movies, including Ready or Not and Guns Akimbo. Could Eenie Meanie be next? The action movie sees her star as a former getaway driver brought back into the criminal world when her former employer offers her a chance to save her ex-boyfriend. A great supporting cast is on hand for this one as well, with Steve Zahn, Randall Park, Andy Garcia, Karl Glusman and Marshawn Lynch. Here's hoping this one puts the pedal to the metal for a fun watch.

Stream Eenie Meanie on Hulu in the US starting August 22.

Final Destination Bloodlines (HBO Max)

One of the biggest movies of the year makes its streaming debut to kick off August with Final Destination Bloodlines. The latest sequel in the horror franchise that is now 25 years old is widely viewed as the best, earning a 93% "Certified Fresh" score on Rotten Tomatoes. Focusing on a family, the characters learn that them being marked for death is something that has been lying in wait for generations. While the crazy deaths are a highlight as always, the movie also serves as one of the final performances from horror legend Tony Todd, so be sure to give a tip of the cap to him if you watch.

Stream Final Destination Bloodlines on HBO Max in the US starting August 1.

Freaky Tales (HBO Max)

It's been a big year for Pedro Pascal with The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Eddington, Materialists and The Last of Us season 2, but one movie of his you may have missed from this year is Freaky Tales. Set in 1987 Oakland, Calif., Freaky Tales answers the question of what happens when an NBA star, a corrupt cop, a female rap duo, teen punks, neo-Nazis and a debt collector collide. Written and directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (the duo behind Captain Marvel), it's flown under the radar, but audiences who have seen it have enjoyed it, based on the 89% positive score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Stream Freaky Tales on HBO Max in the US starting August 8.

The Friend (Paramount Plus)

This one is for all the dog lovers out there, as the breakout star of The Friend is the Great Dane Bing, who plays the central pooch in the movie, Apollo. The human star of the movie is Naomi Watts, who plays an English professor who unexpectedly is tasked with caring for Apollo after his owner and her mentor dies, and has to figure out if and how the dog can fit into her life. While it is a SPOILER, if anyone is on the fence about this movie, wondering if the dog dies or not, I will assure you that while this is a dramedy, Apollo makes it through A OK.

Mother! (Paramount Plus)

Mother! is one of the craziest movies I've ever seen, and I loved it. Darren Aronofsky uses the story of a woman (Jennifer Lawrence) whose life is turned upside down when her poet husband (Javier Bardem) gets a group of fervent fans at the house they are remodeling. From there, the movie draws parallels to the environment, religion and fanaticism in a psychological horror. It certainly won't be everyone's cup of tea, but it's a fascinating piece of work from Aronofsky, and a committed performance from Lawrence.

Stream Mother! on Paramount Plus in the US starting August 1.

My Oxford Year (Netflix)

On the opposite end of the spectrum from Mother! is the new Netflix romance movie My Oxford Year. Sofia Carson stars as an American student at Oxford whose life takes a surprising turn when she meets a local boy, played by Corey Mylchreest. Dougray Scott and Catherine McCormack also star in this movie from Iain Morris (Time Bandits, The Inbetweeners). The fact that the movie was filmed on location on the Oxford Campus should also be a fun treat for viewers.

Night Always Comes (Netflix)

Another member of The Fantastic Four is back with another movie this month, as Vanessa Kirby stars in the Netflix original movie Night Always Comes. This one is a crime drama, with Kirby playing a woman who must confront her dark past over the course of one long night as she looks to secure a future for her and the brother she cares for. Kirby reunites with Benjamin Caron, who directed multiple episodes of The Crown (as well as Andor), for Night Always Comes.

Stream Night Always Comes starting August 15 on Netflix.

The Pickup (Prime Video)

Keke Palmer has already starred in one of the best comedies of the year in One of Them Days. Does she have another hit on her hand in The Pickup? Palmer stars alongside comedy icon Eddie Murphy and Pete Davidson in this action comedy, where Murphy and Davidson are armored truck drivers and Palmer plays a criminal looking to use them to score big, though she has a bit of history with Davidson's character that should make for plenty of fun banter. Ride Along director Tim Story directs.

Stream The Pickup on Prime Video starting August 6.

The Thursday Murder Club (Netflix)

Richard Osman's best-selling murder mystery book The Thursday Murder Club is being adapted into the next big Netflix original movie. The all-star cast of Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley and Celia Imrie stars as four retirees who forgo the knitting circle and instead spend their golden years looking into cold case murders. But when one case proves to be not so cold, the group puts their skills to the test to get justice. There are five books in total in the Thursday Murder Club series, so if this one proves to be a hit, Netflix could have a new franchise on their hands.

Wet Hot American Summer (Netflix/Peacock)

We're in the final days of summer, so what better way to spend it than at Camp Firewood? This cult classic comedy has one of the most incredible casts: Janeane Garofalo, David Hyde Pierce, Michael Showalter, Marguerite Moreau, Paul Rudd, Christopher Meloni, Molly Shannon, Ken Marino, Joe Lo Truglio, Michael Ian Black, Amy Poehler, Bradley Cooper, Elizabeth Banks and H. Jon Benjamin. Wet Hot American Summer is hilariously absurd. And if you enjoy it, Netflix has two spinoff series that it did (which reunite the cast) that you can enjoy (Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp and Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later).

On the heels of wrapping up their adventure in France in The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon —The Book of Carol, Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) and Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) are taking a road trip to Spain as they fight to get back home to their loved ones.

At San Diego Comic-Con 2025, AMC announced that Daryl Dixon will end with a fourth and final season, giving the show a chance to wrap up its Spanish adventure with a final supersized eight-episode season.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 3 premieres Sunday, September 7, at 9 pm ET/PT on AMC and will be available to stream on AMC Plus.

While there are more than a handful of fun movies that are going to be new to Hulu in August, the last few days of July have some great offerings as well, most notably a pair of new series — a period drama and a true crime docuseries — that have high binge potential.

I generally enjoy Guy Ritchie movies, though one of his more recent efforts I have missed and need to play catch-up on is Operation Fortune (aka Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre). The director reunites with long-time collaborator Jason Statham for this action comedy, where a team of secret agents (which includes Aubrey Plaza and Bugzy Malone) brings in a well-known actor (Josh Hartnett) to try and infiltrate the ranks of an arms dealer (Hugh Grant). This seems like the perfect popcorn fare for summer streaming.

Dope Girls season 1

• The latest London-set period crime drama debuts on Hulu July 29

If you are a fan of Peaky Blinders or Hulu's previously released 2025 new TV series A Thousand Blows, then Dope Girls could be right up your alley. Starring Emmy-winner Julianne Nicholson, the new series is a period crime drama taking place in London shortly after World War I, where women look to assert their power by helping launch the night club scene in London's Soho. All episodes of the new series are going to be available immediately to stream.

Memoir of a Snail

• Oscar-nominated animated movie lands on Hulu July 29

Oscar-winner Flow and the Oscar-nominated The Wild Robot were among the biggest animated movies of last year, but flying under the radar was Memoir of a Snail. One of the five nominated movies in the Best Animated Feature category at the Oscars, this story about a melancholic woman named Grace Pudel (voiced by Sarah Snook) earned a 95% "Certified Fresh" score on Rotten Tomatoes, and in addition to Snook features the voice talent of Eric Bana and Jacki Weaver. Fans of animation should definitely check this one out.

Mr. & Mrs. Murder

• You can start watching the true crime docuseries as of July 30

The latest ABC News docuseries focusing on a salacious true crime is Mr. & Mrs. Murder. This series details a case where a husband goes missing, with rumors beginning to swirl that he was eaten by alligators, though no remains were found. But when his wife marries his best friend, suspicions begin to rise over what may have really happened. Many involved with the actual case will share their insights in this documentary that should be catnip for true crime fans.

The Devil Wears Prada (2006)

• Fan-favorite Meryl Streep movie hits Hulu on August 1

The internet has been abuzz recently as the first looks at The Devil Wears Prada 2 have started to come out. We have to wait until 2026 to see the long-awaited sequel to the fashion movie, but you can stream the original on Hulu this week.

Anne Hathaway stars as an aspiring writer who gets a job at a high-profile fashion magazine, where she works for the demanding and manipulative editor-in-chief played by Meryl Streep. It's a favorite role for the three-time Oscar winner (and one that she earned one of her many Oscar nominations for), but also features fun turns from Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci.

Old School (2003)

• Hilarious college comedy is enrolls on Hulu on August 1

August means college kids are heading back to campus, so why not celebrate by watching one of the funniest college comedies ever made? Old School stars Will Ferrell, Luke Wilson and Vince Vaughn as three friends who decide to start their own fraternity, despite the fact that none of them is in school anymore. Attempting to stop their good-natured debauchery is the uptight dead, played by Jeremy Piven. This is one of the movies that made Ferrell a star, and he absolutely steals the show.

Ready or Not (2019)

• You can find the horror/comedy on Hulu starting August 1

Another movie that is getting a sequel in 2026 that is streaming on Hulu come August, is Ready or Not, the horror/comedy from the Radio Silence directing team of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. Starring Samara Weaving and Adam Brody, the movie centers on a bride who marries into a wealthy family that has a strange tradition to welcome people into their family, one that has terrifying results. It's campy and one of the more original and fun horror movies of the last 10 years.

Ready for another scary good time? Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is getting the band back together for the sequel to the 2023 box office hit based on the popular video game.

Five Nights at Freddy’s centers on a security guard and his young sister who discover the animatronic characters at an old kids' restaurant become possessed killing machines at night, though there’s more to this haunt than meets the eye. While critics weren’t the biggest fans of the movie (read our Five Nights at Freddy's review), audiences loved Five Nights at Freddy’s, with the movie scoring more than $290 million at the worldwide box office.

Emma Tammi, who directed the original Five Nights at Freddy’s, returns to direct the sequel. Freddy’s is certainly her biggest movie credit to date, with her past work being indie horror movies, The Wind and documentaries Election Day: Lies Across America and Fair Chase.

Having read the book, this is a series I have been looking forward to ever since I heard it was being made into a TV drama. The book is one of those that has stayed with me long after reading the final page, and I have a feeling the TV adaptation is going to be exactly the same.

The first two episodes are available now on MGM Plus, but with the rest of the season landing weekly, this series has the potential to be one of those shows to pull you in and have you hooked for weeks to come.

Staged in July 2005, the global concert took place across nine countries including Russia and Japan, with headliners Coldplay, Robbie Williams, Mariah Carey and U2. One of the most poignant sets was from Madonna, as she was joined on stage by famine survivor Birhan Woldu. In this episode, Birhan, who became a symbol of the Ethiopian crisis after featuring in a 1985 news report as a starving child, is among the contributors giving exclusive interviews as they reflect on Live 8, its mission and its legacy.

Summer Night Concert from Vienna, BBC4, 8 pm

• The most recent season of the UK's version of 90 Day Fiancé debuts July 12

The 90 Day franchise is a reality TV powerhouse in the US, but it's also become a hit in the UK. Hulu subscribers can enjoy the most recent completed season, 90 Day Fiancé UK season 3, starting this week (season 4 premieres in the UK on July 13, but no word on when it will arrive in the US).

90 Day fans can also enjoy a throwback as 90 Day Fiancé season 6 also lands on Hulu this week (for reference, we're on season 12 for the reality series).

A Quiet Place Part II

• Acclaimed sci-fi/horror sequel lands on the streamer July 12

The A Quiet Place movies have become one of the more successful original franchises of the last decade. After the original movie became a sensation, A Quiet Place Part II followed that up with another strong story of the Abbott family's fight for survival in a world filled with deadly alien creatures attracted to sound. WTW's A Quiet Place Part II review was one of many (the movie is "Certified Fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes) to say it's a worthy sequel, which you can now stream on Hulu.

Dumb Money (2023)

• Movie based on the true story of the GameStop meme stock comes to Hulu July 13

Our WTW Dumb Money review called the movie "the Rocky of Wall Street movies," as it gives a true underdog story based on the day traders that sent shockwaves to the stock market by boosting the video game store GameStop. It's a great cast and a story that effectively speaks to a defining moment of the last five years. You should definitely catch up with it if you've missed it.

Get Away (2024)

• Indie horror comedy starring Nick Frost is available to stream as of July 15

Hopefully your summer vacation will go better than the family at the center of Get Away. Nick Frost and Aisling Bea star as the parents of a family that heads to a remote Swedish island for a family trip, only to be put off guard by a strange festival the locals are putting on — oh, and the serial killer on the loose. This was a 2024 release that flew a bit under the radar, but the movie was "Certified Fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Amateur (2025)

• 2025 spy thriller makes its streaming debut on July 17

The Amateur follows Rami Malek's CIA analyst Charlie Heller, whose wife tragically dies in a terrorist attack. When his superiors deny his plan to go after those responsible, Charlie uses his analytical and technical skills to get his revenge.

The spy thriller went a bit under the radar when it was first released, but it did earn a "Fresh" score from critics and an 88% positive rating from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Those reactions point to this being a movie that likely deserves more of a look now that it's streaming on Hulu.

The latest Steven King adaptation hits screens on Sunday, July 13 when The Institute premieres, and we'll help you figure on how to watch it.

The Institute is about a mysterious facility and organization that collects, houses and experiments on children with unusual powers. In the midst of this a former police officer investigates the mystery as a new boy is brought into the fold.

A retelling of King's well-received 2019 novel of the same name, the series stars newcomer Joe Freeman as well as Ben Barnes and Mary-Louise Parker.

You'll be able to watch The Institute on the streaming service MGM Plus in the US. This is a standalone streaming platform with apps online, on smart TVs or on phones.

The classic shark movie Jaws celebrates its 50th anniversary this year and to commemorate, a making-of movie is coming out called Jaws @ 50: The Definitive Inside Story.

The movie, which releases on Thursday, July 10 in the US but later elsewhere, has been anticipated for a while after it was announced months ago, especially as July is traditionally shark month across broadcasters.

Jaws @ 50 uses previously-unseen footage from the making of the classic movie as well as interviews recorded recently, in order to chart how Jaws was made.

UK fans of Jaws will be able to watch Jaws @ 50: The Definitive Inside Story on Friday, July 11, and again it'll land online and on TV.

You can also stream the movie at the same time, and it'll broadcast on Disney Plus. This streaming service costs £4.99 per month for its ad-supported tier and a bit more for ad-free.

At the centre is Luke Ellis (Joe Freeman in his first major TV role), a 14-year-old genius with the gift of telekinesis, who is abducted from his bedroom in Minneapolis and taken to The Institute, a secret compound for children with unusual abilities, including telepathy.

“For me, there’s no better writer than Stephen King, so just to get an audition was so exciting!" Joe tells What to Watch in an exclusive chat. “This show is the perfect balance of fun with that classic Stephen King disturbing psychological thriller element, but not in a jumpy way, it’s just very uncomfortable.

“I play Luke Ellis and he’s certainly smarter than your average Joe. He wants to do what’s best for himself, but he also can’t help but care about everyone else in his life and never wants to leave anyone behind. That helps when he arrives at The Institute because he’s able to band the other kids together. You root for them in there.

“One of the most challenging aspects of filming, though, was Luke’s telekinesis. As soon as the cameras were rolling, that’s when I found it difficult because who knows how to behave with telekinesis? That’s not something I have experience in!”

“I didn’t know this book beforehand, but I had filmed a Stephen King series called Mr. Mercedes [2017-19] and loved the idea of working with director Jack Bender again,” says Mary-Louise. “Jack also posed this question that I thought was kind of amazing: 'How far would you go to prevent the apocalypse?’

“That’s how my character justifies the horrendous things she does, but she’s fuelled by loneliness and paranoia, and she has an inner sense of decay. She’s clinging to whatever humanity she has left, but she's so hyper-aware of the logistics of her job. You think there’d be a lot of guilt, but I don’t think she goes there very often.

“I’m not a horror fan at all, though. I’m already afraid, so I don’t want to make it worse! I remember one day on set, I needed somewhere to sit during a break, so they took me into a dark room filled with beds with IVs hanging down. The room just felt jaundiced and diseased. I was like, ‘I'll stand in the hall!’”

“Making a contribution to the Stephen King filmic canon is an exciting bucket list thing for me,” smiles Ben. “I’ve been assured that he loves the series, too, so I feel proud of that. “He writes in so many genres, but they all have a connective tissue of hope, humanity and fighting against unchecked authoritarian systems. The Institute has all that, plus a gripping, simmering tension, with a message of how important it is to stand up for what is right.

These days, it's rare for an original live-action film be both a box office success and a critical darling, but Sinners—the new Southern horror drama reuniting star Michael B. Jordan and his Black Panther and Creed director Ryan Coogler—ended up being both this summer, grossing $364.7 million worldwide and a stellar 97% Rotten Tomatoes rating since it premiered in theater on April 18. And in case you missed it when it first hit theaters, you can now experience the Sinners sensation from the comfort of your own couch thanks to Max.

Hitting the HBO streaming service on Friday, July 4, Sinners sees Jordan playing dual roles, as identical twins and World War I veterans Smoke and Stack Moore who are heading home to Clarksdale, Mississippi, after years spent working for the Chicago mob.

"Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back," reads the official movie description, per HBO. “You keep dancing with the devil, one day he’s gonna follow you home," town preacher Jedidiah Moore (Saul Williams) warns in the Southern gothic story, which was written, directed and produced by Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Coogler.

"A rip-roaring fusion of masterful visual storytelling and toe-tapping music, writer-director Ryan Coogler's first original blockbuster reveals the full scope of his singular imagination," reads the critical consensus on Rotten Tomatoes. The horror flick received widespread critical acclaim: Rolling Stone critic A.A. Dowd commented that the director was "swinging wide and far beyond the boundaries of franchise fare," while Wendy Ide of The Observer wrote that "Coogler's assurance and vision holds everything together."

Along with the double performances from Michael B. Jordan, the Sinners cast includes Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O'Connell, Omar Benson Miller, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson and Delroy Lindo, among others.

One of the most anticipated Netflix movies of 2025 is Troll 2, the sequel to hit 2023 movie Troll which currently sits on the top spot of the streamer's most-watch Non-English movies.

Troll 2, not to be confused with a cult classic movie, has been confirmed to release at the end of 2025. Like the predecessor it's set to be a Norwegian fantasy horror movie that's based in the folklore of the country.

So once again Norway is at threat from a big stomping terror, and if you're excited for this dramatic sequel or just want to know what the fuss is about, here's everything you need to know about Troll 2.

Troll 2 release date

You'll be able to watch Troll 2 on from Monday, December 1, almost three years on from when the original movie landed.

Like most Netflix movies, Troll 2 isn't expected to get a theatrical release and will instead land straight on its platform.

The original Troll is still available to watch on Netflix and, as one of its biggest movies, it seems unlikely that the streamer will pull down Troll any time soon.

There isn't a full Troll 2 trailer out yet per se, but there is a teaser trailer, which is pretty much the same thing (but shorter).

The trailer gives a brief glimpse at the returning cast of the movie, and gives a nod to how it builds on the predecessor: Troll 2 has two trolls. When a full trailer is released, we'll update this guide to share it.

Troll 2 plot

The plot to Troll 2 is pretty similar to the first Troll.

In it, a new troll awakens in Norway, and it begins a rampage that threatens the country. Our cast of characters has to figure out how to stop it.

The catch is that this time there's a second troll, so there's double the danger. The teaser doesn't make it clear whether they'll be opponents or allies and so we'll need to watch the movie to find out.

What's in a name? Movie fans are excited to find out because Netflix has finally unveiled the trailer for the sequel to one of its biggest-ever movies, and it just so happens to share the same name with an infamous cult classic "bad movie".

The original Troll hit Netflix in December 2022, and it was quite popular. It's actually currently the streamer's #1 movie of all time in its category: Non-English Movies (there are four top-10 lists that Netflix maintains, for English and Non-English Movies and TV shows).

Set in Norway, Troll is about a giant troll that wakes up and wreaks havoc on its rampage through a city. It's basically Godzilla (complete with similar messaging) but based in Scandinavian folklore.

Not long after Troll came out it became known that a sequel was in the works: Troll 2, and we'll be able to watch it on Monday, December 1 of this year. On Monday, June 30, Netflix finally released a trailer for the movie, and you can see it below:

This is a teaser trailer, at just 81 seconds long, and we'll probably see a full trailer in the next few months. It doesn't show a whole lot, just a lot of clips that feel familiar if you've watched the first movie.

The main takeaway is that Troll 2 has... well, two trolls, as we see one of the characters (inexplicably snow-free despite being in a snow-covered valley) watching one troll approach, before another one wakes up behind her.

People who've watched the trailer have taken something very different from the teaser though, judging by comments on the above YouTube video. At least half of the commenters are quoting lines that are clearly not in the teaser, but they still come from Troll 2.

That's because this Netflix movie isn't the first Troll 2, and the first one remains a legendary piece of filmmaking for all the wrong reasons.

I'm talking about the other movie called Troll 2, which came out in 1990. It's a sequel to the 1986 movie Troll in name only, and in fact was originally meant to be released under a totally different name. It doesn't even have trolls in it.

Since its release, the 90s Troll 2 has become a cult classic in the esteemed genre of "good bad movie", films which are fun to watch and laugh at for shortcomings and issues. An oft-quoted line from it is what people are commenting under the trailer for new Troll 2: "they're eating her! And then they're going to eat me! Oh my god!" spoken by a panic-stricken boy as he sees the goblins eating his mother.

The prevalence of 90s Troll 2 comments under the Netflix Troll 2 teaser shows just how popular the cult classic is, however, Netflix is likely hoping the name is where the similarities begin and end. A critically-reviled sequel to one of its biggest hits wouldn't be a good look (not that poor reviews have ever stopped Netflix).

Thankfully, there's nothing about the trailer that suggests this could be a "so-bad-it's-good" movie. Despite the iffy CGI and distractingly-obvious green screen effects, it seems to offer more of the same that Netflix viewers enjoyed so much back in 2022.

We'll be able to tell in December when Troll 2 comes out. And if you're curious to watch the cult classic, it's on Prime Video in the US and UK.

M3GAN was something of a surprise hit when it came out in the early days of 2023, but it soon became a hit, both at the box office and online. So many fans have been anticipating the horror/dark comedy sequel, and we’re here to help meet that by providing everything you need to know about how to watch M3GAN 2.0 right now.

For anyone that needs a brief refresher, M3GAN centers on robotic engineer Gemma (Allison Williams) who comes to care for her niece Cady (Violet McGraw) after a tragic accident. Williams, McGraw and the original combo of actresses that played M3GAN — Jenna Davis as the voice and Amie Donald as the M3GAN we see on screen — are all back for the sequel. So is director Gerard Johnstone, who also wrote the script for the sequel. Here is the official synopsis:

“Two years after M3GAN, a marvel of artificial intelligence, went rogue and embarked on a murderous (and impeccably choreographed) rampage and was subsequently destroyed, M3GAN’s creator Gemma has become a high-profile author and advocate for government oversight of A.I. Looking for some new movies to stream in July? Well great news, there are plenty of options across the likes of Netflix, Max, Prime Video and all of the major streaming services this month. With that said, it can be a lot to scroll through, so allow me to offer my humble services in helping you find the new movies on streaming that you are not going to want to miss.

The below list of movies are taken from the major streaming services: Apple TV Plus, Disney Plus, Hulu, Max, Netflix, Paramount Plus, Peacock and Prime Video. I'm also specifically picking movies that are new to streaming this month — in this case, these are 11 movies that are landing on one of the major streamers for the first time, or coming back to streaming services after only being available via on-demand.

So without further ado, here are my picks for the 11 movies to stream in July.

The Amateur (Hulu)

The Amateur slid a little under the radar in movie theaters, but the spy thriller starring Rami Malek did earn a "Fresh" score from critics and an 88% positive rating from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Those reactions point to this being a movie that likely deserves more of a look when it becomes easier to watch on streaming this month.

In the movie, Malek plays a CIA analyst Charlie Heller, whose wife tragically dies in a terrorist attack. He wants to go after those responsible, but when his superiors deny that plan, Charlie goes out on his own using his analytical and technical skills at his disposal to get his revenge.

The Assessment (Hulu)

Let's be honest, nobody likes taking tests. But what if a test decided whether or not you could have children. That's the premise of this sci-fi psychological drama that stars Elizabeth Olsen and Himesh Patel as hopeful parents and Alicia Vikander as person running the assessment and deciding if they get to become parents.

The indie movie, which only saw a limited release in movie theaters, is officially "Certified Fresh."

Stream The Assessment on Hulu in the US starting July 19; currently streaming on Prime Video in the UK.

Billy Joel: And So it Goes (Max)

I had plans to see Billy Joel in concert this September before the Piano Man unfortunately announced that he would need time to recover from a medical condition and the concert was cancelled (bummer, but warranted). That just makes this upcoming HBO documentary about Joel more of a must watch for me (and any fan of his music).

A two-parter that will release on Max in back-to-back weeks, Billy Joel: And So It Goes explores the love, loss, and personal struggles that fuel his songwriting, providing never-before-seen performances, home videos, personal photographs and one-on-one interviews.

Stream Billy Joel: And So It Goes part 1 on July 18 on Max, with part 2 premiering July 25.

There's no info on a UK premiere for Billy Joel: An So It Goes at this time.

Brick (Netflix)

The language barrier on Netflix may be a thing of the past based on how many foreign language movies have become solid hits on Netflix so far this year. Whether they're watching dubbed versions or subtitles, Netflix subscribers have given movies like Exterritorial (from Germany) and Bad Influence (from Spain) their attention.

We could have the next example of that this month in Brick, another German-made movie. Matthias Schweighöfer, the breakout star of Netflix's Army of the Dead, leads this sci-fi, mystery thriller where an entire apartment building becomes encased by a mysterious brick wall, forcing the residents to find a way out.

Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (Hulu)

Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story is one of the funniest sports comedies of all time. The battle between Vince Vaughn and his team of misfits and the fantastically over-the-top villain played by Ben Stiller is, as the title suggest a classic underdog story, played out in hilarious fashion.

With sports options a bit minimal at the moment, Dodgeball can help fill your competitive drive, while getting you howling.

Stream Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story on Hulu in the US starting July 1; currently streaming on Disney Plus in the UK.

Happy Gilmore 2 (Netflix)

Another classic sports movie highlights July's streaming options, with Adam Sandler's Happy Gilmore 2 teeing off on Netflix. The sequel to Sandler's golf comedy sees his hot-headed, long-driving character trying to reignite his golf career to help his daughter achieve her dreams.

Original cast members Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen and Ben Stiller, are back, while new to the scene are Sunny Sandler, Margaret Qualley, Bad Bunny, Travis Kelce and a number of real-life golf professionals. Can they all help recreate what made the original Happy Gilmore a fan-favorite?

Stream Happy Gilmore 2 on Netflix worldwide starting July 25.

Heads of State (Prime Video)

In the new action comedy Heads of State, a pair of world leaders have a bit more of a hand in international affairs as John Cena and Idris Elba play the US president and UK prime minister that have to stop a global conspiracy on their own. Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Jack Quaid and Paddy Considine also star in the movie that hopes to bring some summer fun to Prime Video's streaming lineup.

Mortal Kombat (Max)

Pick your preference on Mortal Kombat movies, as both the 1995 movie and the 2021 reboot return to Max in July. For, it's the 1995 movie all the way.

In a nutshell, both movies involve some of Earth's strongest fighters being tasked with saving the planet from adversaries from an other world looking to the planet over, with its fate to be decided in a series of fights known as Mortal Kombat.

The timing is good too, as a sequel to 2021's Mortal Kombat is set to be released later this year. So you can use this opportunity to refamiliarize with the new movie's characters.

Both Mortal Kombat movies are available on-demand in the UK, with no streaming plans available at this time.

The Old Guard 2 (Netflix)

It's been a long five-year wait for The Old Guard 2, the sequel to Netflix and Charlize Theron's hit action movie about immortal mercenaries. But that officially ends early in the month, with the added bonus of Theron and company taking on a new villain, played by Kill Bill icon Uma Thurman.

This is one of Netflix's answers to the summer blockbuster season, and if it can live up to the first movie it should be a pretty good one.

On Becoming a Guinea Fowl (Max)

Max is adding a number of recent A24 movies to its library this month, including Opus and Death of a Unicorn. But the most intriguing will be On Becoming a Guinea Fowl, an international indie that has a rare 100% "Certified Fresh" score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The movie follows a Zambian family whose secrets come out as funeral proceedings for their uncle take place. Interested?

Sinners (Max)

What I dubbed as the first great movie of the year, Sinners arrives on streaming in July, meaning there is little excuse if you're one of the few people that has not seen this excellent entry from Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler.

A blend of horror, action and music, Sinners is expertly made, written and acted, and should play just as well on your TVs at home as it did on the big screen.

Believe it or not, but 2025 is already halfway over. While the 2025 new movie release schedule has plenty more on the docket for this year and there are a number of good summer blockbuster movie options to enjoy in movie theaters right now, I’d thought I’d take a moment to reflect on my favorite movies of 2025 so far.

Extra bonus, all of these movies are available to watch at home right now either through streaming services or via digital on-demand.

Seeing as we’re just half way through the year, I’ve picked my five favorite movies so far rather than the traditional 10; though if the 2024 edition of this mid-year check in is any indication, a good number of these could have some staying power on the eventual year-end list (four out of the five movies I cited as my “favorite of 2024 so far” made my final top 10 of 2024).

Without further ado, here are my five favorite movies of 2025 so far (in alphabetical order), and how you can watch them at home:

The Ballad of Wallis Island

I can usually rely on the Sundance Film Festival to deliver at least one first-half of the year gem, and this year that came in the form of The Ballad of Wallis Island. This indie comedy centers on a professional musician who finds out his most recent gig is playing for a concert exclusively for an eccentric lottery winner on a remote British isle. And to make things more awkward the musician’s ex-bandmate/girlfriend was also invited.

That sets up plenty of gentle humor in this charming film, with stars Tom Basden, Tim Key, Carrey Mulligan and Sian Clifford playing their roles in perfect harmony. But there’s also a touch of beautiful sadness to the story that allows The Ballad of Wallis Island to sit with you a good while after you’ve watched it.

Black Bag

Between my Black Bag review and a plea for viewers missing adult-targeted movies like this to show up for Black Bag when it premiered on streaming, I’ve made my support for Steven Soderbergh’s modern spy movie known. But just in case you haven’t seen Black Bag yet, here’s a reminder to do so.

Michael Fassbender stars as George Woodhouse, one half of a powerful spy couple along with his wife Kathryn St. Jean (Cate Blanchett). But when a key piece of technology goes missing, George is tasked with finding who the traitor is, with the list of suspects including his wife.

Black Bag is a tight, expertly made spy thriller, which you can stream on Peacock in the US; available to rent via digital on-demand in the UK.

One of Them Days

One of Them Days came out all the way back in January but for my money it remains the funniest movie of 2025 to date. Keke Palmer and SZA star as two best friends and roommates who find themselves short on rent when an airhead boyfriend spends it on himself. They have until the end of the day to scrounge up enough money to keep them from being evicted, while having to deal with a slew of characters in their LA neighborhood.

As I wrote in my One of Them Days review, Palmer and SZA have great comedic chemistry, while the movie itself has the inklings of a Friday for the 21st century. It’s a great option if you’re in need of a laugh.

Sinners

If I had to rank my favorite movies of 2025 right now, Sinners would be in the pole position. Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan reunited for another incredible movie that should’ve absolutely been seen on the big screen (and as indicated by its box office many did). But if you need to catch up with it at home, by all means sit back and revel in this horror/action blockbuster.

Jordan stars in the movie as twin brothers Smoke and Stack as they return to their home in the Mississippi Delta in the 1930s after years away with the aim of opening up a club. They round up old friends and family to help put on their opening night party, but soon find that they’ve attracted some unwelcome guests that threaten to turn the night upside down.

Currently available via digital on-demand in the US and UK, Sinners makes its streaming debut on Max in the US on July 4.

Warfare

I’ve previewed the funniest and what I think right now are the best movies of the year, so to close this list out I’m highlighting the most intense movie of the year, Warfare. Civil War’s Alex Garland co-directed this movie with veteran Ray Mendoza, portraying a real-life mission featuring Navy SEALs, with the story taken from the memories of those who took part in it.

While the action in the movie is still intense, watching Warfare at home may be better for some who don’t want to feel a little shell-shocked from theater acoustics. And however you watch it, it’s an incredible story of brothers in arms and the cost of war.

It took 23 years between 28 Days Later and 2025’s 28 Years Later (and 18 years between 28 Weeks Later and 28 Years Later), but there won’t be such an extended gap for the next chapter in the zombie franchise. 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, which is set to continue the story of Spike (Alfie Williams) and others, is arriving as a 2026 new movie.

The Bone Temple was filmed back-to-back with 28 Years Later, and is the second chapter of a hopeful trilogy; the early box office results from 28 Years Later offer a promising, but still unconfirmed (as of publication) start. At the very least, we are going to get one more chance to see what happens to Spike and other characters we saw in 28 Years Later, as well as meet some new (and potentially familiar) ones.

Here’s what you need to know about 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.

Fans won’t have to wait all that long for the next chapter in the zombie franchise, as 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is set to premiere exclusively in movie theaters on January 16 in the US, UK and elsewhere around the world.

That’s just seven months after the release of 28 Years Later. We do recommend that you catch up with that movie first though, so here are the details on how to watch 28 Years Later right now.

It has also been confirmed by 28 Years Later director Danny Boyle that original franchise star and Best Actor winner for Oppenheimer Cillian Murphy is going to reprise his role as Jim (really popular name in this franchise) in The Bone Temple.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Ralph Fiennes said that the sequel will deal with themes like “innate humanity” and “human violence.” While Garland told Business Insider that the sequel will also touch on ideas like “the misremembered past.”

DaCosta is experienced in the horror genre, having directed the “Certified Fresh” reboot of the horror movie Candyman in 2021. Her other feature directing credits to date include The Marvels and the indie movie Little Woods.

As we said, The Bone Temple was shot back-to-back with 28 Years Later in the UK.

Sony Pictures, Columbia Pictures and TSG Entertainment are the studios/production companies behind the movie. Meanwhile, Bernard Bellew, Danny Boyle, Alex Garland, Andrew Macdonald and Peter Rice are producers. Cillian Murphy is an executive producer on the movie.

The 28 Years Later ending certainly had me taken aback, as there’s a lot going on emotionally and narratively in the final 10 minutes or so of the movie. So if you were a little confused over all that occurred and what exactly happened with Spike (Alfie Williams), let me help break it all down for you.

Now obviously I’m going to be getting into SPOILERS, so if you haven’t seen the movie yet probably best to figure out when and how you watch 28 Years Later, then come back if you need anything cleared up.

While the titles don’t exactly sync up, 2025 new movie 28 Years Later is the continuation of 2002’s 28 Days Later, one of the most acclaimed zombie movies of all time from Danny Boyle and Alex Garland. However, 28 Years Later features all new characters (Cillian Murphy is nowhere to be found, yet). Specifically, the movie focuses on a family — the 12-year-old Spike, his dad Jamie (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and his mom Isla (Jodie Comer) — living on an island of survivors that are protected from the infected on the mainland by a causeway that is only accessible a few times a day.

It’s been nearly three decades since the outbreak of the rage virus and this island has its rules that help them maintain their society — if you go out into the mainland you can come back whenever (as long as you’re not infected), but no rescue party is coming to look for you. They also have their own traditions, including a rite of passage where teens go out to the mainland for the first time. That’s the case for Spike, as he prepares for his first trip with Jamie. Isla isn’t a fan of this idea, but as she is bedridden with an unknown illness, there’s little she can do to stop it.

Their trip on the mainland sees Spike get his first kill, run into an “alpha” (a jacked up infected that is very difficult to kill), see a fire in the distance that Jamie is cagey about and just make it back to the island safely after being tracked by the alpha.

Spike becomes conflicted about everything that happened when Jamie exaggerates his accomplishments on the mainland and ends up sleeping with another woman on the island. Spike returns home, where a family friend tells him that the fire Spike saw in the distance was made by a doctor.

After Spike confronts his dad about everything he saw and gets him to admit what he knows about the doctor, Spike decides to take Isla to the mainland himself to see if the doctor can treat what ails her.

Spike and Isla’s journey to Dr. Kelson

Spike creates a distraction to allow him and Isla to get onto the mainland without the leaders of the island’s permission, and from there they set out on their journey.

Isla has fits where she is confused, sometimes referring to Spike as her dad. But she is still able to help when they get into trouble — killing an infected in the night that was about to bite a sleeping Spike.

They get additional assistance from a Swedish soldier, Erik (Edvin Ryding), who was on a quarantine boat (the UK is under heavy quarantine to keep the infected from spreading) that crashed on the island.

As they get close to where Spike believes the doctor to be, they hear an odd noise coming from an abandoned train. Isla investigates and finds an infected woman who is giving birth. Isla is able to calm her and helps deliver the baby — a girl who is actually not infected. However, Erik gets spooked and shoots the infected woman, which brings an alpha. The alpha grabs Erik and kills him, ripping his head from his body.

Spike and Isla, still carrying the baby, run. The alpha chases and is about to catch them when the doctor they’ve been looking for, Dr. Kelson (Ralph Fiennes) appears, shooting the alpha with a tranquilizer dart that stops him in its tracks (though notably doesn’t kill him). Dr. Kelson then welcomes Spike and Isla to come with him to where he resides.

What is wrong with Isla?

Dr. Kelson brings Spike and Isla to his memorial for the dead — towers made of bones that he has taken from infected and non-infected alike, describing it as “memento mori,” a reminder that we all die.

Dr. Kelson eventually examines Isla and determines that she is suffering from cancer, which is affecting her brain (why she has her odd episodes). In these circumstances, there is nothing he can do to treat Isla, estimating that she does not have long to live. Spike refuses to accept this, holding tight to his mother. But Isla gives a signal to Dr. Kelson, who tranquilizes Spike so that he can give Isla the peaceful death she deserves.

When Spike wakes, Dr. Kelson has prepared Isla’s skull to be added to his memorial. Spike takes it to the very top, placing Isla’s skull as the sun rises.

What happens to Spike?

Because they did not kill the alpha that was chasing them, he comes after Spike and Dr. Kelson. They are able to knock him out again, and Dr. Kelson tells Spike it's time for him to go home, and to bring the baby with him.

However, Spike has other ideas. He does return to drop the baby off at the island, but he does not stay. He leaves a note for Jamie saying he needs to be on his own on the mainland for a while to get a better understanding of himself, but he hopes that Jamie will look after the baby, which he has named Isla.

While resting on the mainland, Spike spots an infected in the distance. Showing his growth, he calmly gathers himself and kills it. But as more come he runs. Eventually he runs into a dead end, seemingly trapped with multiple infected getting closer

That’s when Sir Jimmy Crystal (Jack O'Connell) appears with his group of survivors decked out in track suits that save Spike with acrobatic maneuvers to kill the infected. Once all the infected are dead, Jimmy welcomes Spike to come and see where they’ve come from.

Who is Sir Jimmy Crystal?

While his arrival is a bit jarring, the 28 Years Later ending is not the first time we see Jimmy Crystal in the movie. He is in fact the same boy that is shown in the opening sequence that takes place at the beginning of the outbreak in the early 2000s; this is clear by the gold cross that Jimmy’s father gave him before he was bitten by the infected.

The last we see of the young Jimmy (Rocco Haynes) he is running from the infected. However, apparently in the 28 years since the beginning of the movie and the ending, Jimmy Crystal has built some kind of following or power.

We can expect to see more of that in the already set sequel, 28 Years Later: The Bone Tower, which is scheduled to release January 16, 2026. Hopefully that will answer some of the questions that are raised by the 28 Years Later ending — like where did Jimmy get those track suits in the apocalypse and their unique fighting style?

Boyle directed and Garland wrote the screenplay for 28 Years Later, which has an official synopsis that reads:

“It’s been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected. One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway. When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors as well.”

Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Alfie Williams star in the movie (those Cillian Murphy rumors aren’t true, at least for this first movie in a planned trilogy).

Just about any list of the greatest zombie movies of all time is sure to include Danny Boyle and Alex Garland’s 28 Days Later. So naturally there was a lot of excitement around the two returning for the latest sequel in the series, 28 Years Later. But does the 2025 new movie live up to its predecessor?

Meh. 28 Years Later is an up and down experience. It features some of the gruesome zombie action that many fans likely desire, as well as a handful of sincerely beautiful moments. However the movie's highs don’t quite reach the same level of the original movie, while some of the lows are either a bit boring or outright baffling (the ending being the biggest evidence of the latter).

28 Years Later takes place nearly three decades after the outbreak depicted in the first movie, focusing on an entirely new set of characters (rumors that Cillian Murphy would appear in this one were shot down, though he is reportedly set to appear in 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, coming out in 2026). In this one, 12-year-old Spike (Alfie Williams), who has spent his entire life on an island protected from the infected, makes his first trip to the UK mainland with his dad (Aaron Taylor-Johnson). When Spike learns that a mysterious doctor (Ralph Fiennes) is close, he decides to take his ailing mother (Jodie Comer) to see if he can help; if they can survive the infected first.

Williams’ Hollywood debut is a memorable one, as the young actor steals the movie as Spike. It’s an effective choice to reintroduce this world through the eyes of a child, with Williams’ effectively portraying Spike’s growth as he comes to understand real horrors and hard truths.

Fiennes also gives a good, supporting performance, bringing the emotional heart of the movie. Comer has a few touching moments, but I wouldn’t rank this among her best.

In terms of the movie’s action, those who want to see gore will get a good bit of it in 28 Years Later, both humans killing zombies and zombies killing humans. Boyle and his editors also kept some of that gritty, hectic style for the action that the first movie had. Though in some instances, they may have taken it too far.

Mostly relevant in the movie’s first half, there are editing choices (both visually and audially) that don’t make a whole lot of sense. They add a creepy, unsettling element to the movie, sure, but they don’t fit naturally with the story that we are seeing unfold, or are unnecessary, jarring jumps that take you somewhat out of the moment.

And if we’re talking about being taken out of the moment, the ending is the chief culprit. I won’t get into the details, but the movie feels like it is settling on a natural and generally satisfying conclusion before it introduces something completely off the wall that is wholly inconsistent with what we’ve just watched. It left me scratching my head as I was leaving the theater.

28 Years Later has the basis of a solid story and characters, with a few standouts in Williams and Fiennes. But the movie only reaches its highest potential in a few moments, while a number of the stylistic choices from Boyle are more curious oddities than compelling features. All in all, 28 Years Later opens the door for a potentially interesting story to be continued with its set follow-up and a potential third movie, but judging just on its own, it’s a middling start.

I freely admit that I'm not a horror person, but I am a member of a horror-loving family, so lately I've been pushing my limits with the genre (aka trying to keep my eyes uncovered while watching scary movies). That's why I finally ended up watching Barbarian on Netflix. I'm still recovering.

Barbarian came out in theaters in August 2022 and it quickly amassed a 92% "Certified Fresh" score on Rotten Tomatoes. The horror movie, from director Zach Cregger (who has another anticipated movie coming up in 2025, Weapons), features Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsgård (who is also an executive producer) and Justin Long.

The story is creepy from the outset. Tess (Campbell) arrives at her AirBnB in the middle of a stormy night to find that someone else, Keith (Skarsgård) is already there. With no hotels available, they decide to share the house until they can get things straightened out.

Despite seeming to be nice, Tess is understandably wary of Keith. It doesn't help when she awakens to find her bedroom door open, putting her in direct line of sight of Keith, who is asleep on the couch. It's not long before they discover that their concerns were actually misplaced, because they have much bigger things to worry about.

Long plays AJ, a Hollywood actor who finds himself in the middle of a scandal. In need of money, he returns to Detroit with intentions of selling off his rental property, only to find that it looks like there are still people there and that the square footage doesn't exactly match up. What follows is the stuff nightmares are made of.

With the basic setup in mind, Barbarian has a rather unique plot twist that I really didn't see coming. I'm still trying to figure it out, honestly. It was disturbing and unsettling and intriguing til the very end.

I have to admit that I'm never ready for all of the jump scares that invariably come with horror movies, but in the case of Barbarian there were things that were chilling that had nothing to do with horror and everything to do with the messed up things that people do. The careful balance between real-life ick and the actual horror elements made for a really refreshing watch.

There are also some great moments of levity in the movie. As I mentioned, Skarsgård is an executive producer and I have a feeling he may have influenced the script because there are a few lines that wouldn't be nearly as good if you didn't know he has starred in several horror productions already, including his role as the titular creeper in the IT franchise.

If you're a horror fans and you haven't had a chance to watch Barbarian, it's a great way to spend the evening (if you want some other options on that front, check out our best Netflix movies feature). I guarantee you'll be thinking about it long after the credits roll.

I hope most of you took advantage of seeing Sinners on the big screen — and in IMAX and/or 70mm if possible — as that experience is truly what helped make the Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler movie the best movie of the year so far in my book. But if you haven’t been able to see the movie in theaters, well, things have gotten a bit easier for you, as you can now watch Sinners at home via digital on-demand platforms.

As of Tuesday, June 3, you can buy or rent Sinners through Prime Video and other digital on-demand platforms. Sinners is still playing in movie theaters if you want to try and catch it on the big screen, but admittedly, watching Sinners at home makes it easier to catch up with the movie.

Sinners takes place in the Mississippi Delta of the 1930s, where twin brothers Smoke and Stack (both played by Jordan) return home looking to start their own club. However, on opening night, they have some unannounced visitors who bring unparalleled chaos to the proceedings. In addition to Jordan, Sinners stars Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O’Connell, Miles Caton, Wunmi Mosaku, Delroy Lindo, Li Jun Li, Omar Benson Miller and Jayme Lawson.

In my Sinners review, I called the movie “the first truly great movie of 2025,” and a month and a half later, it is still the best movie I’ve seen this year. While the movie theater experience was definitely special, the performances, the storytelling and the craftsmanship of Sinners will have the movie play well on whatever size screen (though I’d still recommend watching it on the biggest TV you have).

I’m not alone in my praise, as Sinners is “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes with a critics’ score of 97% and “Verified Hot” on the platform with an audience score of 96%. It’s also pulled in the dough, with it ranking as the third highest-grossing movie at the US box office as of publication and top 10 worldwide.

In summation, Sinners has become something of a phenomenon for moviegoers. So anyone who likes to be caught up with the latest movies and hasn’t seen Sinners yet — or if you want to watch the movie again — well, now you have multiple options to do so.

To be clear though, Sinners is not available as part of a major streaming service at this time, you have to buy the movie or pay a rental fee to watch it at home. We’re still waiting on an official streaming release date for Sinners, but as a Warner Bros. movie, we all but know where it is going to be available to stream first — on Max (or perhaps it will be HBO Max again by the time Sinners arrives on the platform).

Maybe it’s a good thing pay phones have gone away, because Black Phone 2 looks to make them a big part of the scares of its continuing story. That’s right, the breakout horror movie The Black Phone is getting a sequel, with most of the key members of the original back for more in this 2025 new movie.

The Black Phone was a summer blockbuster in 2022, earning a very solid $161 million worldwide haul and being “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes. Black Phone 2 goes from a prime summer spot to a prime spooky season release, a perfect time to see what’s next for The Grabber.

Black Phone 2 release date

Audiences will be able to watch Black Phone 2 when it releases exclusively in movie theaters on October 17.

That is set to be a big weekend at the movies, as the Keanu Reeves comedy Good Fortune and the drama Blue Moon, also starring Ethan Hawke, are set to premiere.

Hawke is back to reprise his role as The Grabber in Black Phone 2, as in horror movie fashion his demise in the first movie was only temporary. The Oscar-nominated Hawke is known for his collaborations with Richard Linklater in the Before trilogy, Boyhood and the upcoming Blue Moon. More recently, aside from The Black Phone, he was seen the Netflix movie Leave the World Behind and the Disney Plus Marvel series Moon Knight.

Also returning for Black Phone 2 are Mason Thames as Finn and Madeline McGraw as Gwen. This is a big year for Thames, who also stars in the live-action How to Train Your Dragon. As for McGraw, the Black Phone movies are her biggest credits to date aside from the Disney Plus original series Secrets of Sulphur Springs.

Miguel Mora and Jeremy Davies are also returning to the franchise as Robin and Terrence, respectively.

Other members of the Black Phone 2 cast include Demian Bichir (Godzilla vs. Kong), Arianna Rivas (A Working Man), Maev Beaty (Beau Is Afraid) and Graham Abbey (Under the Banner of Heaven).

Just as they did with the first movie, Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill have co-written the script for Black Phone 2, which picks up four years after the events of the first movie, as the phone is ringing again.

“As Finn, now 17, struggles with life after his captivity, the headstrong 15-year-old Gwen begins receiving calls in her dreams from the black phone and seeing disturbing visions of three boys being stalked at a winter camp known as Alpine Lake.

“Determined to solve the mystery and end the torment for both her and her brother, Gwen persuades Finn to visit the camp during a winter storm. There, she uncovers a shattering intersection between The Grabber and her own family’s history. Together, she and Finn must confront a killer who has grown more powerful in death and more significant to them than either could imagine.”

If you ever feel like there is just too much stuff to watch and that it’s hard to keep up with everything, I can relate. There are only so many hours in the day and occasionally I like to try and get some exercise or speak to my loved ones! So while I try to stay on top of most of the big things playing in theaters or that are available on TV, there are always a few that slip through the cracks.

But this month I’m going to make a concerted effort to cross two movies that have just been added to Netflix as part of the streamer’s June lineup off my must-watch list — the classic 1980 comedy The Blues Brothers and the more recent and highly acclaimed horror/thriller Barbarian, both of which arrive on Netflix on June 1.

The Blue Brothers has been on my list for a while, but either I haven’t had easy access to where it is streaming or it has been removed from platforms before I could find the time to watch it. John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd star as brothers Jake and Elwood, who take on “a mission from God” to reunite their old R&B band to save the church they grew up in.

Legendary film critic Gene Siskel wrote of The Blues Brothers at the time of its release, “The Blue Brothers is the year’s best film to date; one of the all-time great comedies; the best movie ever made in Chicago.” Other critics were initially a bit more mixed, though The Blue Brothers is “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes and with the help of fans (92% positive on RT), it’s place in the pantheon of comedies is pretty secure.

Even though I haven’t seen the movie, I am familiar with a good bit of what The Blues Brothers has to offer. The iconic look of black suits, black ties, fedoras and sunglasses that Belushi and Aykroyd wear are cultural staples. But I’m excited to see Belushi on screen, as aside from Animal House a handful of early Saturday Night Live skits, I haven’t experienced enough of the legendary comedy figure's work. Plus, there look to be some cool cameos from some of the most famous musicians in history, including James Brown and Ray Charles.

Then there’s Barbarian, which was just released back in 2022 and caused quite a stir. The breakout movie from director Zach Cregger has a synopsis on Netflix that reads: “A young woman arrives at her Detroit rental house to find it already occupied by an interloper — and by something far worse below the floorboards.” That is as much as I know about the plot and I intend to keep it that way until I get to watch it.

Barbarian was highly acclaimed upon its release, with a 92% “Certified Fresh” score and I remember reacting to it strongly. Horror is not my first choice of genre though, so it simply went on my to-watch list and I’ve let it linger on there for a while. But with Cregger’s new movie, Weapons, coming out in August, now is the perfect time to finally check it out.

I will say that Bill Skarsgård starring in the movie intrigues me. The son of Stellan Skarsgård (Andor) and brother of Alexander Skarsgård (Murderbot), Bill Skarsgård has really enjoyed playing creepy roles, including Pennywise the Clown in IT and most recently Count Orlok in Nosferatu; he’s an expert at being a menace (if that is his role here, again, I’m flying mostly blind). Georgina Campbell and Justin Long also star in the movie.

So I’m adding those two to my Netflix queue this month. You can too now that they are streaming on Netflix, or check out what else is new on Netflix this week and some of the other best Netflix movies available to stream.

Let me be clear: It's not that I would ever doubt that Guillermo del Toro could make a visually sumptuous horror film — the Oscar-winning director's filmography is stunning proof, from Pan's Labyrinth to The Shape of Water to Nightmare Alley.

Rather, my concerns about the filmmaker's latest project, an adaptation of Mary Shelley's 1818 classic novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, is because it's such well-trodden territory — there are reportedly 190 known films featuring some version or interpretation of the character of Frankenstein's monster. And when I heard that said creature would be portrayed in Del Toro's version by Euphoria hunk Jacob Elordi, I was admittedly perplexed by the overall vision.

However, those worries were assuaged when I saw the new Frankenstein trailer, and heard the cast speak about their experiences on the film, during the Netflix Tudum 2025 event, which aired live on the streamer on Sunday evening. Del Toro was joined onstage by actors Oscar Isaac (portraying legendary scientist Dr. Victor Frankenstein) and Mia Goth (as Victor's wife Elizabeth) to introduce the clip, a gloriously brooding, thunder-clapping teaser of all the gothic goodness to come.

During the Netflix event, Del Toro revealed that he's been dreaming of Mary Shelley’s classic monster since he was a young boy and that it's taken him decades to finally adapt the beloved novel, and that faithfulness is felt even in the two-minute teaser trailer, which highlights puts Isaac front and center as Victor deals with the achievement and anguish of his monstrous experiment.

And the trailer smartly only gives coy glimpses at Elordi's monster, utilizing the actor's powerful six-foot-five frame and animalistic growl to create a terrifying and tragic character without even seeing his face. Fans got to see more of the actor in a pre-recorded message during the Tudum live event, greeting both studio and at-home audiences. Elsewhere, Goth did tease to The Hollywood Reporter that Elordi was in the makeup chair for hours each day to prepare for filming, and Isaac called his performance "a graceful, beautiful, sad and rageful portrait of this creature."

Beyond Isaac, Elordi and Goth, the Frankenstein cast includes Charles Dance (Game of Thrones), Felix Kammerer (All Quiet on the Western Front), Lars Mikkelsen (The Witcher), David Bradley (Harry Potter), Christian Convery (Sweet Tooth) and Academy Award winner Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds).

Del Toro fans, this writer included, will get to see the filmmaker's new Frankenstein adaptation in all of its gloomy glory when the film hits Netflix this November.

With the start of another month, Hulu's library is getting a lot of new additions, particularly on the movie side. New to Hulu this month are a couple of 2025 new movies, including a Hulu original, as well as some older favorites that are always worth a revisit.

Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012)

• The Best Picture nominee arrives on Hulu on June 1

It feels like we've all collectively forgotten about Beasts of the Southern Wild. That's definitely an oversight, as the movie, which was an indie sensation and a Best Picture nominee from 2012, is a magical story that features an incredible performance from a young Quvenzhané Wallis. It's time to rediscover the gem that is Beasts of the Southern Wild.

Before Midnight (2013)

• Catch up with Jesse and Celine with the third Before movie on June 1

I've made my love for the Before franchise very clear when I dubbed Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Deply) as the greatest movie couple ever, so of course I'm excited that Before Midnight, the third and last entry in their story, hits Hulu this month. Picking up with the couple nine years after their Paris rendezvous, this time in Greece, Before Midnight is a perfect closing chapter for their story (barring Hawke, Deply and Linklater catching up with these characters again further down the line).

Dude, Where's My Car? (2000)

• The stone comedy is available on Hulu as of June 1

There are better movies that are going to be streaming on Hulu in June than Dude, Where's My Car? This pick is a pure nostalgia play for me, as the Ashton Kutcher and Sean William Scott stoner comedy was one of the first "raunchy" movies that I saw growing up. I can still quote large chunks of the movie. So if Dude, Where's My Car? has a special place in your heart, then you can stream it on Hulu this month.

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (2015)

• Watch the coming-of-age comedy starting June 1 on Hulu

Here's another movie that has been a bit overlooked since its release. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl is a coming-of-age teen comedy that was a breakout for young stars Olivia Cooke, Thomas Mann and RJ Cyler. It's a funny and touching story that doesn’t pander to its primary teen audience, offering a mature take on growing up, connection and death.

Presence (2025)

• Steven Soderbergh's other acclaimed 2025 movie starts streaming on June 3

Steven Soderbergh has made not one (Black Bag) but two critically-acclaimed movies that were released in the first few months of 2025, with the other being the haunted house movie Presence. "Certified Fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes, Lucy Liu headlines the movie that finally looks to find its audience on streaming.

Hot Shots! (1991)

• The Top Gun parody movie lands on Hulu on June 6

Jim Abrahams, who was part of the writing/directing team that made probably the greatest parody movie ever in Airplane, also wrote and directed this brilliant spoof of Top Gun, as well as poking some fun at other hit movies of the 80s. Charlie Sheen stars as the Tom Cruise stand-in, alongside Cary Elwes, Valeria Golina, Jon Cryer and Lloyd Bridges. The sequel, Hot Shots! Part Deux, which pokes fun at the Rambo movies, is also available to stream starting June 6.

Predator: Killer of Killers (2025)

• Original animated Predator movie premieres on June 6

Dan Trachtenberg revitalized the Predator franchise with Prey and will have a brand-new live-action movie, Predator: Badlands, releasing later in 2025. But before that, he's co-directed this animated addition to the franchise that will be a must-watch for sci-fi fans. This new movie includes three timelines where fierce warriors from different eras of human history are forced to take on a Predator.

Looking for some new movies to stream in June? Well great news, there are plenty of options across the likes of Netflix, Max, Disney Plus and all of the major streaming services this month. With that said, it can be a lot to scroll through, so allow me to offer my humble services in helping you find the new movies on streaming that you are not going to want to miss.

The below list of movies are taken from the major streaming services: Apple TV Plus, Disney Plus, Hulu, Max, Netflix, Paramount Plus, Peacock and Prime Video. I'm also specifically picking movies that are new to streaming this month — in this case, these are 15 movies that are landing on one of the major streamers for the first time, or coming back to streaming services after only being available via on-demand.

So without further ado, here are my picks for the 15 movies to stream in June.

The Actor (Hulu)

While The Actor made very little noise at the box office, it did seem to resonate with those who saw it, as the movie earned a 90% positive score from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. So what is this indie movie about? Based on the novel Memory by Donald E. Westlake, The Actor is a psychological drama about a man who is left for dead in a small town in 1950s Ohio, with his memory completely gone. He must figure out how to reclaim what he has lost. Andre Holland stars alongside Gemma Chan, Toby Jones and more.

Beasts of the Southern Wild (Hulu)

Beasts of the Southern Wild is a magical movie. The southern folk tale focuses on a young girl named Hushpuppy, played by Quvenzhané Wallis, who must go on an adventure to save her ill father and their bayou home as it is threatened by melting ice-caps and mythical beasts. Director Behn Zeitline has unfortunately not made a movie to rival this one (his only other feature credit to date is 2020’s Wendy, which came and went with little fanfare), but if his sole movie of note is Beasts of the Southern Wild, then he’s put his stamp on cinema with a gem that deserves to be rediscovered.

Before Midnight (Hulu)

To help mark the 30th anniversary of Before Sunrise, I declared the movie’s central couple Jesse and Celine, played by Ethan Hawke and Julie Deply, as the greatest movie couple of all time. That’s not just because of their magical night in Vienna, but the entire run of their relationship that we see in Before Sunset and Before Midnight. You can experience the latter on streaming again in June. Before Midnight picks up with Jesse and Celine after another nine years. They are married and vacationing in Greece with their family, but is the spark that they had in Vienna and Paris something that is built to last?

The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie (Max)

Looney Tunes were a big part of growing up for me, as I loved watching the old cartoons. Well, kids today have gotten their very own Looney Tunes original, and it’s a feature-length movie. In The Day the Earth Blew Up, Daffy Duck and Porky Pig must save the world from an alien invasion; expect wacky antics to ensue. The Day the Earth Blew Up is “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes. With kids at home for the summer from school, the timing is perfect to give them something fun to watch.

Frozen: The Hit Broadway Musical (Disney Plus)

Fans of Frozen can watch the well known story of Anna, Elsa and Olaf in an entirely new way, as a Broadway production. Telling the same story and featuring iconic songs like “For the First Time in Forever,” “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” and of course “Let It Go,” the recording of the stage production also features 12 new original songs. Disney previously had a massive streaming hit with a recording of Hamilton on Broadway, this could be something just as big.

Stream Frozen: The Hit Broadway Musical on Disney Plus worldwide starting June 20.

The Intern (Netflix)

It’s crazy to think that Nancy Meyers hasn’t made a movie since 2015’s The Intern (she was working on a project with Netflix but it was ultimately scrapped because of budget concerns). While I wouldn’t say that The Intern is her best movie (The Holiday, Something’s Gotta Give top the list for me), The Intern is a charming movie about a retiree (Robert De Niro) deciding to rejuvenate his life by becoming an intern for a startup, where he becomes a key ally and confident to the novice CEO (Anne Hathaway). It’s the easy kind of watch that you just need some times.

Stream The Intern on Netflix in the US and UK starting June 22

Jaws (Peacock)

Summer is beach season, which makes the terror of Jaws all the more palpable; don’t worry, shark attacks are not nearly as prevalent as Steven Spielberg’s breakout movie (though notably not Spielberg’s first big-screen movie) would make it seem. The all-time classic celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2025, so there’s no better time to watch.

Stream Jaws on Peacock in the US starting June 15; Jaws is not streaming in the UK at this time.

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (Hulu)

Another underrated gem from 2015 to stream this month is Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. A coming-of-age comedy with some darker tones focuses on a high schooler that befriends a classmate that has been diagnosed with cancer. A breakout movie for Olivia Cooke (who plays the titular dying girl), Thomas Mann and RJ Cyler — supported by the likes of Nick Offerman, Molly Shannon, Connie Britton and Jon Bernthal — the movie doesn’t pander to its primary teen audience, offering a mature take on growing up, connection and death.

Stream Me and Earl and the Dying Girl on Hulu in the US starting June 1; Me and Earl and the Dying Girl is not streaming in the UK at this time.

A Minecraft Movie (Max)

While we don’t have an exact date, we do know that the biggest movie of 2025 to date is coming to streaming in June, as A Minecraft Movie is set to premiere on Max. After raking in early a billion dollars worldwide and causing quite the stir in theaters (thanks in large part to the chicken jockey), the video game adaptation hits home, allowing fans to dive into the world of Minecraft once again.

An exact streaming premiere date for A Minecraft Movie is not available as of publication.

Parthenope (Max)

Parthenope the movie is much like Pathenope the character, mysterious (perhaps a bit confusing) yet quite alluring. The movie was not a big hit with most critics, but I enjoyed Paolo Sorrentino’s exploration of Naples through the years via the perspective of the titular young woman, played by newcomer Celeste Dalla Porta (read my Parthenope review for more details on why). The movie also features a brief supporting turn from Gary Oldman as famous author John Cheever. While I don’t know if it’s one of the best, Parthenope is definitely one of the most intriguing movies of the year.

Presence (Hulu)

Steven Soderbergh’s other 2025 new movie, aside from Black Bag, is a haunted house movie that has also received great critical acclaim (“Certified Fresh” at 88%). Despite the solid reviews, Presence got little fanfare at the early year box office, so this is going to be the chance for the movie — starring Lucy Liu, Chris Sullivan and Julia Fox — to finally find its audience.

Rear Window (Netflix)

Netflix is giving legendary director Alfred Hitchcock the spotlight in June, as the streaming service is adding six of his movies, including classics like Vertigo and The Birds. But my pick of the Hitchcock movie you need to watch on Netflix this month is Rear Window. The movie stars Jimmy Stewart as a professional photographer bored out of his mind while recovering from a broken leg, who begins to watch the neighbors in his apartment complex. Things get dicey when he begins to suspect that one neighbor has murdered his wife. This is one of my favorite Hitchcock movies, and is a perfect sampling to see why he is considered one of the greatest directors of all time.

Stream Rear Window on Netflix starting June 1.

Sally (Disney Plus/Hulu)

An American icon, Sally Ride was the first American woman in space, but back on Earth things were complicated in her personal life. This new documentary, from National Geographic and Emmy-winning documentarian Cristina Costantini, reveals the sacrifices that Sally Ride made in her life, with testimony from her life-partner of 27 years, Tam O’Shaughnessy.

Stream Sally on Disney Plus and Hulu in the US starting June 17; streaming on Disney Plus in the UK as of June 17.

Titan: The OceanGate Disaster (Netflix)

Another documentary to watch on streaming in June is Titan: The OceanGate Disaster. Most will remember the tragic story of the implosion of an OceanGate submersible, the Titan, that killed all five passengers in 2023. This documentary will look at what went wrong to lead to such an outcome. This is one of two documentaries about the Titan incident, with the other being Implosion: The Titanic Sub Disaster.

Stream Titan: The OceanGate Disaster on Netflix starting June 11.

Straw (Netflix)

The prolific Tyler Perry has a brand new project as the director and writer of Straw, a thriller starring Taraji P. Henson as a single mother who is pushed to the brink, leading her to a shocking act of desperation. Henson is joined in the cast by Teyana Taylor, Sherri Shepherd, Rockmund Dunbar, Glynn Turman and, in one of his most profile roles in years, Sinbad.

Stream Straw on Netflix starting June 6.

After another cross-country adventure as well as some shocking deaths, The Last of Us season 2 comes to an end on Sunday, May 25 with its seventh and final episode..

The Last of Us season 2's finale will wrap up the story of the war between the WLF and Seraphites, after episode 6 was set in the past and didn't forward the story.

Throughout the season we've seen these two factions fight a war throughout Seattle, with Ellie and her friends caught in the middle. That conflict could end in episode 7, although a third season of The Last of Us has been greenlit which takes the TV show beyond the games, and this could continue the war between the two groups.

This second season of The Last of Us is proving just as bloody and action-packed as the first, which is no surprise given what happened in the video game it's an adaptation of: The Last Of Us Part II. No spoilers here though!

After the box office success behind IT and IT: Chapter Two, IT: Welcome to Derry is coming to HBO and Max this fall, just in time for spooky season. This time around, the prequel series will take fans deep into the sordid history of Derry, Maine, to discover what happened all those years ago to an idyllic small town that fell victim to a joyful, soulless monster.

Stephen King fans will recall the Pennywise the Clown originally came to life on the small screen in the 1990 classic made-for-TV miniseries featuring Tim Curry in the iconic role with memorable performances from the likes of John Ritter, Harry Anderson, Tim Reid, Richard Masur, Richard Thomas and Annette O'Toole.

Years later the story came to life again, this time on the big screen in the 2017 movie IT, which was followed quickly by the second installment, IT: Chapter Two, in 2019. It was in the two feature films that fans were introduced to Bill Skarsgård in the titular role.

Now, in IT: Welcome to Derry, the story returns to 1960s Derry (which was also featured in the 1990 version) where Pennywise has residents in a state of terror with no end in sight. Thankfully, Skarsgård will be back as Pennywise in the prequel series.

“Plagued by a violent recurring nightmare, college student Stefani heads home to track down the one person who might be able to break the cycle — her grandmother, Iris — and save her family from the grimly demise that inevitably awaits them all.”

The Final Destination Bloodlines cast features Kaitlyn Santa Juana, Teo Briones, Richard Harmon, Owen Patrick Joyner, Anna Lore, Ryan Kihlstedt, Brec Bassinger and Tony Todd. This is one of the final roles for the horror legend Todd, who passed away in 2024.

Only one previous Final Destination movie received a “Fresh” score from Rotten Tomatoes, Final Destination 5. Final Destination Bloodlines not only marks the second time an entry in the horror franchise is going to have a “Fresh” rating, but it is far and away the best reviewed movie of the bunch, with a very good 95% “Fresh” Rotten Tomatoes score as of May 15.
