Robson and Jim’s Icelandic Fly-Fishing Adventure is a new 3-part series where we see Grantchester star Robson Green and actor Jim Murray, who is currently filming a new Apple TV mini-series Masters Of The Air, bring their highly contagious energy and enthusiasm on their adventure to Iceland — one of the best places in the world to go fly-fishing. 

For this pair, fishing is more than just a hobby. Robson Green, who has also appeared in Extreme Fishing with Robson Green, reveals how much fishing has benefitted his mental health. On the Robson Green website, he says, “I needed something in life that made sense and, for me, fishing makes sense. Early on in my acting career, I was reckless. It was all about Robson. But I’ve learned so much from fishing and have an inner peace now that had been missing.”

For Jim, his love of fishing also helped him cope after the death of his eight-month-old daughter, Ella Jayne. Telling the Robson Green website, he said: “When I lost my daughter, fly fishing dug me out of a deep, dark hole and has been an integral part of my life ever since.”

To begin their exploration, they arrive in Iceland at the beginning of the salmon season to start their search for the iconic Wild Atlantic Salmon. However, they discover that finding them is far more difficult than they thought. 

Amongst the picturesque scenery of Iceland, we see Robson and Jim’s close friendship and humour radiate through the screen, as well as their passion and drive for fishing.

In the World War Two Pacific, veteran US marine Nicolas Cage reluctantly teams up with a rookie Navajo radio operator (Adam Beach).

Inspired by true events - the US military correctly figured that the Japanese would be unable to understand orders transmitted in the Navajo language - director John Woo's spectacular film is always more of a high energy game of soldiers than a mature drama.

The savage hand-to-hand combat scenes are non-stop. Woo's forte as a director is action fantasy rather than gritty realism, so he's hardly the obvious choice for a movie based on fact.

Still, this is a celluloid war comic to savour, especially in the sequence in which Cage and Beach steal a Japanese radio in the middle of a battle.

Christian Slater and Mark Ruffalo are also in uniform.

Written by Oliver Stone, this inspired remake of the 1932 Paul Muni film gave Pacino one of the defining roles of his career. Flamboyant, extremely foul-mouthed (with some 150 uses of the F-word alone) and furiously funny, he goes into manic overdrive as a hustler who carves out his own twisted version of the American Dream. Spitting out his dialogue at a Tommy-gun pace and sporting a range of 'medallion man' suits, he hits an aggressive high in almost every scene.

The phrase 'over-the-top' hardly does justice to his final shootout, while his bloody initiation (complete with chainsaw) into the ways of American gangsterdom is equally unforgettable.

Michelle Pfeiffer is impressively ice-cool as his sneering wife, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio (with a very unfortunate hairstyle) plays his sister and Steven Bauer is his key sidekick.

A film that makes a showy virtue of excess, its corrosively cynical attitude to the drugs trade, relationships and and life in general is often overpowering, but the steamroller effect of Pacino's energetic performance carries all before him.

Sensational.

This is a truly stupendous game of cat and mouse, based on the 2002 Hong Kong thriller Infernal Affairs, and director Martin Scorsese wrings every drop of suspense from the plot.

Damon's cold-eyed calculation and DiCaprio's shattered nerves are a dynamic combination, the several twists in the tale are stunning and Nicholson's deliciously ripe turn as the villain (Ray Winstone plays his right-hand man) is a black comic tour-de-force.

With its seamless succession of nail-biting sequences, the attention-grabbing acting and the sudden scary bursts of action and bloody violence, this film's a total blast.

Author Ewan McGregor takes on a job as ex-Prime Minister Pierce Brosnan's ghost writer for his memoirs.

Only trouble is, the last man in the job was found dead on the beach and McGregor doesn't look like he'll survive for very long, either.

Holed up on a wintry island off the coast of New England, McGregor begins stumbling on some dark secrets lurking in the charming and glib ex-PM's background, while his slippery subject's manipulative wife (Olivia Williams) and slinky aide (Kim Cattrall) hover in the background.

Director Roman Polanski and his cast have considerable fun with this adaptation of novelist Robert Harris' bestselling political thriller and the twists and turns in the plot (including a suspenseful sequence involving a car's satellite-navigation device) grip the viewer  all the way to the nail-biting climax.

Director Martin Scorsese's crime drama gets an ace performance from Ray Liotta, as a young man who happily embraces the mobster life.

The sordid, violent and foul-mouthed subject matter is one thing, but the sheer exuberance with which the story is told ensures that this is one of the great gangster movies.

Liotta is excellent, Oscar-winning Joe Pesci and Robert De Niro are both outstanding as his pathological pals and Paul Sorvino breathes quiet power as their boss.

Pure movie magic is much in evidence as the roving camera introduces us to De Niro's favourite bar, there's an exhilarating extended sequence in which Liotta takes Lorraine Bracco to a nightclub and the film's withering sense of black comedy is often more frightening than funny.

Small-time criminal Mel Gibson and his partner, Gregg Henry, steal $140,000 from Triads.

But then Gibson is shot and left for dead, double-crossed by his wife, Deborah Kara Unger, and Henry.

A no-holds-barred revenge thriller then gets under way, with Gibson proving a convincing tough guy. Based on the same book as the classic 1967 Lee Marvin film, Point Blank, this ultra-tough thriller ditches the many ambiguities of the original and opts instead for a more straightforward storytelling style.

However, the gritty action is very well-staged and Lucy Liu impresses with her high-kicking style. Kris Kristofferson is the top villain and James Coburn has a cameo.

So what can these crooked boys do? Help is at hand as, during a musical sermon at the local church, Jake is seized by a ‘holy mission’ to raise the money legitimately by reviving the old Blues Brothers Band.

As they set off to round up their musicians, the brothers brush with the police over traffic violations, a group of neo-Nazis and a deadly woman (Carrie Fisher) who keeps trying to kill the boys.

John Landis’ cult comedy is full of belly laughs and boasts fabulous car chases, involving the entire police force of Chicago, as well as great music from the likes of Cab Calloway, Aretha Franklin, James Brown and Ray Charles.

As the maverick ex-CIA agent Jason Bourne, Matt Damon still wants answers about his own deadly past.

Picking up the story in Moscow straight on from the conclusion of The Bourne Supremacy, this third movie has Bourne inching ever closer to uncovering the secrets of his mysterious past.

All the while, he has to evade the clutches of sinister CIA spymaster David Strathairn, who is using satellites to track his every movement.

Paddy Considine is a British journalist who may have some answers for Bourne, but a meeting at London’s Waterloo Station doesn’t go as planned, resulting in a nail-biting cat-and-mouse chase that’s one of the movie’s highlights. A frenetic motor scooter race through the backstreets of Tangier is another pulse-pounding sequence and, throughout, the complex plot is punctuated with marvellous edge-of-seat action.

Damon confirms his supremacy as a fired-up, unstoppable man of action in this pounding sequel to the 2002 hit, The Bourne Identity, directed with supreme skill by former TV documentary maker Paul Greengrass.

Joan Allen proves a class addition to the cast as the CIA boss out to terminate Damon for a double murder.

His globetrotting quest for the answer, after Russian killer Karl Urban tracks him to his Goa hideaway, takes him to Naples, Munich, Berlin and Moscow, but there's no time to pause for any sightseeing. Smart, stylish and vibrant, it's a winner and the final car chase will have you gripping the edge of your seat.

Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe are on compelling form in Ridley Scott's complex, engrossing and magnificent real-life thriller set in the 1970s.

Washington plays chauffeur Frank Lucas who reinvents himself as a crime kingpin in New York, using the Vietnam War as a cover for importing heroin from Asia and building a vast criminal empire from the proceeds.

His inexorable rise up the underworld ladder is juxtaposed with the desperate efforts of Crowe's idealistic cop Richie Roberts to bring him down at any cost.

The irony of the situation is that while the boundlessly corrupt Washington lives a life of casual affluence and is perceived as a pillar of the community, the incorruptible Crowe is a slovenly wreck.

Both actors deliver powerhouse performances, although they actually only appear on screen together for just a few minutes near the end, in a movie that impeccably recreates the garish energy, grit and style of its era.

The lean script was co-written by Peter Benchley from his own bestseller and John Williams' Oscar-winning score helps build up the nail-biting tension no end.

The resort town of Amity Island is the place where it definitely isn't safe to go into the water, a great white shark (represented by a mechanical model, nicknamed Bruce) is the beast snacking on unfortunate swimmers and police chief Roy Scheider, shark expert Richard Dreyfuss and grouchy boat skipper Robert Shaw are the mismatched trio who decide to hunt it down.

Reuniting with Borat and Brüno director Larry Charles, Sacha Baron Cohen plays the dictator of the fictional Wadiya.

This time, Cohen has abandoned the spoof documentary format of his previous movies to create a far more conventional comic vehicle.

General Admiral Haffaz Aladeen is the despotic and idiotic ruler of his North African country, but falls victim to a plot by his scheming second-in-command (Ben Kingsley) during a trip to New York to address the United Nations.

He is replaced by his body double and shorn of his distinctive beard. Now unrecognisable, he finds refuge with a lefty vegetarian feminist (Anna Faris) while he schemes to regain power.

Though a lot of the jokes are predictable and, naturally, very un-PC, there are a few standout sequences that show off the star's gifts for physical and verbal comedy – including a would-be torture scene involving John C Reilly and a side-splitting helicopter ride in which he’s mistaken for a terrorist. And there's a brilliantly delivered speech, in which Cohen unwittingly draws parallels between a repressive dictatorship and the present-day US, that has genuine satirical bite.

Director Quentin Tarantino's stunning debut movie is a gruesome tale about a jewel heist that goes disastrously wrong.

Tim Roth bleeds profusely for most of the story and Michael Madsen's torture scene (to the strains of Steeler's Wheel) is justly infamous.

However, there is a strong line in gallows humour, too, with Tarantino's flair for witty dialogue well served by Harvey Keitel's Mr White and Steve Buscemi's Mr Pink ('Why can't we pick our own colours?'), while there's some standout work, too, from veteran Lawrence Tierney, as the bulky crime boss, and Chris Penn, as his son.

Definitely not for the easily shocked, this is devastatingly cynical stuff, but it is also a perfect showcase for both its director and stars.

This tremendous and unusual Western is a masterpiece and one of director and star Clint Eastwood’s finest films

This tremendous and unusual Western is a masterpiece and one of director and star Clint Eastwood’s finest films.

He plays the title farmer who joins a band of Confederate guerrillas when Union soldiers kill his family and burn down his farm - and he's still bent on revenge when the Civil War ends.

Eastwood is at his enigmatic best and there are memorable performances by Paula Trueman as an octogenarian pioneer and Sam Bottoms as the boy soldier who is Wales' first trail partner.

However, the best lines go to Chief Dan George whose deadpan delivery steals the film.

The script is dry, laconic and literate, the music and photography are spectacular, the action first-rate and there is also a surprising amount of humour.

Jason Statham plays a dodgy car dealer persuaded to pull off a bank heist by ex-model Saffron Burrows.

Thanks to Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais' sterling script and Roger Donaldson's taut, expert direction, this is a top-notch Brit crime thriller, based on the true story of a heist gone wrong - the unsolved robbery of a bank at London's Baker Street in 1971.

Statham and his gang plot the robbery but, unfortunately for them, the bank's safe deposit contents have links to organised crime, black power activists - and even a suppressed Royal Family scandal.

It's a compelling story and the film's commendably tense, with exciting stretches when the heist and its messy aftermath are underway.

David Suchet is nice and menacing as the chief villain and Daniel Mays, Keeley Hawes, Peter Bowles and Stephen Campbell Moore are also among the cast.

Rising US politician Matt Damon has a career setback when the press leak an old college-prank scandal - but then he meets English dancer Emily Blunt and things are looking up again.

Unfortunately, though, creepy blokes in sharp suits and funny hats are trying to keep the lovers apart...

Based on a tale by Philip K. Dick (Minority Report, Blade Runner), this intelligent and entertaining spiritual romance with a sci-fi spin ponders destiny and free will while delivering fairly generous helpings of mystery, action, humour and intelligent dialogue.

Damon runs like the clappers, Blunt dances like an angel and together the cute couple share sweet chemistry.

There's not a lot to it - the short story seems way stretched to fill a feature length movie - and there's not much in the way of a lasting aftertaste, but it's all very slick and satisfying while it lasts.

Tim Robbins plays a 1940s banker wrongly jailed for murdering his wife and her lover.

Sent to Maine's Shawshank penitentiary, he keeps a stoical distance from the other inmates but, gradually, his quiet personality and knowledge of numbers begin to influence both the staff and his fellow inmates.

Morgan Freeman plays his closest friend and it's his wry voice-over that sets the eloquent tone of this captivating prison drama.

Based on a Stephen King story and directed by Frank Darabont (who also made King’s The Green Mile), the film's plot twists are beautifully timed and there is a brilliant pay-off when it finally reveals just what kind of 'redemption' it's been hiding for more than two riveting hours.

Bob Gunton, as the warden, and Clancy Brown, as the chief guard, are two of the nastiest pieces of work in convict movie history and, as an inmate who's been locked up for 50 years, veteran character actor James Whitmore also makes a crucial contribution.

Denzel Washington is on a quest to save humanity.

In one of those post-apocalyptic movie worlds, Washington plays armed traveller Eli who fights his way to the west coast of America with a sacred book.

The plot takes a weirdly pseudo-religious angle but, complete with a strong turn from Washington, an engrossing script, lots of exciting, gory action and striking visuals, this is highly impressive entertainment.

Mila Kunis, Jennifer Beals, Frances de la Tour and Michael Gambon are underused, but Gary Oldman gives his usual villain role a great workout as the boss of a makeshift barter town Denzel fatefully visits.

Director Martin Scorsese's ambitious portrait of New York in the mid-1800s shows the city as an explosive melting pot of different creeds, classes and cultures.

King of those mean streets is ruthless gang leader Daniel Day-Lewis, a butcher by trade and by nature.

Sixteen years earlier, he fought and killed Irish gang leader Liam Neeson in an epic street battle and he maintains his vehement hatred of the many Irish newcomers to the city.

However, unbeknown to him, Neeson's now grown-up, embittered son (Leonardo DiCaprio) is in his gang…

The plot, really just a standard revenge story, is sometimes hard to follow, but Scorsese recreates the teeming vitality, violence, vice and sheer scale of the city with a breathtaking precision.

Day-Lewis is electrifying and the fiery supporting cast includes John C Reilly, Brendan Gleeson and Cara Seymour.

A shape-shifting alien takes on the form of Natasha Henstridge and hunts for a human mate to keep her species going.

'You created a monster with some kind of formula from outer space. The damn thing got away and now you want us to hunt it down!' Tough guy Michael Madsen neatly sums up the plot of this sci-fi chiller, which has two great things going for it.

First, it periodically takes the point of view of the alien and, secondly, almost every scene comes complete with a classic deadpan line.

Henstridge's comically wide-eyed attempts at courtship ('Where's a good place to find a man?') include a memorably explosive kiss, while the scenes which see her reverting back to her slimy alien self are terrific.

Magnificently over the top, this is hugely entertaining hokum.

Burnt-out New York cop Bruce Willis is given a routine job - escort witness Mos Def 16 blocks to the courthouse to testify.

However, it soon becomes apparent that this is no simple task, because David Morse and his team of corrupt cops are after them and will stop at nothing to ensure they don't finish their journey…

Willis is on peak form and Def is also ideal as his whining sidekick in a brilliant, perfectly constructed thriller, which springs surprise upon surprise with intelligence and wit, right down to the last exciting minute.

Following Borat and Brüno, Sacha Baron Cohen once again sends forth a blundering foreigner to cause mischief and mayhem in America.

Director Tim Burton's gleeful spoof of 1950s B-movies has a great cast, led by Jack Nicholson, and is a real hoot.

Based on a series of bubble gum trading cards, the film’s tacky design’s a delight and Nicholson enjoys himself immensely in twin roles as the American President and a sleazy tycoon.

There are smashing special effects, too, as the cute little green men ‘come in peace’, but then soon get down to the business of zapping Earthlings away.

Outstanding turns come from Annette Bening, Sylvia Sidney, Glenn Close, Sarah Jessica Parker, Lucas Haas, Rod Steiger, Pierce Brosnan and, amazingly, singer Tom Jones who, in his first acting role, is pretty nearly the hit of the show.

Faultless special effects, loads of explosions and bodies flying all over the place as the Martians are battered help to keep this deliciously lively, goofy entertainment.

Singing and acting up a storm, Johnny Depp gives a cutting-edge performance as the Victorian mad barber Sweeney Todd.

He gets into some close shaves as he seeks revenge on London’s evil Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman) and turns his clients into meat pies, aided and abetted by baker Mrs Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter).

In the hands of director Tim Burton, Stephen Sondheim’s great musical is turned into a fabulous-looking, if very gory, movie.

Anyone familiar with the stage version will notice that several songs have been cut entirely from the movie, while some others only appear in an abridged form.

This doesn’t affect the flow of the story as much as one might imagine, but reduces the importance of the romantic subplot involving Todd’s daughter, and forces the focus back onto Sweeney and his lethal razors.

Depp and Carter couldn’t be better - and nor could Rickman, Timothy Spall, as the fussy, creepy Beadle, and Sacha Baron Cohen, who’s funny and effective as dodgy crimper Signor Adolfo Pirelli.

Director Stanley Kubrick's bleak but compelling Vietnam War film follows a group of raw recruits, including Matthew Modine, as they’re put through training before being sent to war

Director Stanley Kubrick's bleak but compelling Vietnam War film follows a group of raw recruits, including Matthew Modine, as they’re put through training before being sent to war.

In the film’s first half, former real-life sergeant R Lee Ermey puts the youngsters through their gruelling paces, barking out orders and foul-mouthed insults at machine-gun rate until all traces of their individuality are stamped out.

The action then follows them as they’re thrown into combat at the height of the Tet Offensive.

Always uncompromising and at times disturbing, this doesn’t make for easy viewing, but it’s well worth staying with.

It was filmed partly in London’s Isle of Dogs and Kubrick and his crew convincingly re-create the swamps, jungles and heat of South East Asia.

However, there is a strong line in gallows humour, too, with Tarantino’s flair for witty dialogue well served by Harvey Keitel’s Mr White and Steve Buscemi’s Mr Pink (‘Why can’t we pick our own colours?’), while there’s some standout work, too, from veteran Lawrence Tierney, as the bulky crime boss, and Chris Penn, as his son.

Definitely not for the easily shocked, this is devastatingly cynical stuff, but it is also a perfect showcase for both its director and stars.

Together, Sutherland and Phillips pursue the gang through the streets of Philadelphia and there is plenty of fast-paced action along the way.

The scenes in which the two leads gradually put aside their mutual animosity and get to know each other are clumsy, but director Jack Sholder handles the shoot-outs and chase sequences with aplomb, culminating in an exciting climax that takes in a blazing barn, a motorcycle and a cat-and-mouse hunt through woods.

Based on the same book as the classic 1967 Lee Marvin film Point Blank, this ultra-tough thriller ditches the many ambiguities of the original and opts instead for a more straightforward storytelling style.

However, the gritty action is very well-staged and Lucy Liu impresses with her high-kicking style. Kris Kristofferson is the top villain and James Coburn has a cameo.

There's brilliance everywhere in director David Fincher's tale of a sadistic murderer who picks his victims to exemplify each of the seven deadly sins.

Veteran investigating detective Freeman is forced to take on eager young partner Pitt and even counsels Pitt's weepy, newly pregnant wife (Gwyneth Paltrow).

Thanks to clever editing and the power of suggestion, the film is not nearly as violent as you might expect - though it certainly provides its fair share of jolting surprises.

An unremittingly dark look into a psychopath's mind, this is a gripping, intelligent and hellishly atmospheric thriller that will chill you to the bone.

This tremendous and unusual Western is one of director and star Clint Eastwood’s finest films.

Eastwood plays the title farmer who joins a band of Confederate guerrillas when Union soldiers kill his family and burn down his farm - and he’s still bent on revenge when the Civil War ends.

Eastwood is at his enigmatic best and there are memorable performances by Paula Trueman as an octogenarian pioneer and Sam Bottoms as the boy soldier who is Wales’ first trail partner. However, the best lines go to Chief Dan George, whose deadpan delivery steals the film.

The script is dry, laconic and literate, the music and photography are spectacular, the action first-rate and there is also a surprising amount of humour.

A masterpiece.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is back as the cyborg assassin, but this time he's the good guy.

In the first film, he was trying to kill the mother (Linda Hamilton) of the future leader of 'the war against the machines', but now he's been programmed to save her son (Edward Furlong) from an even more deadly enemy, the liquid metal T-1000 Terminator (Robert Patrick) - which is able to instantly change shape and even become the exact replica of any human.

The molten metal special effects really are exceptional and Schwarzenegger destructively goes to town with everything from a six-barrelled machine gun to a grenade launcher.

However, the main reason that the film works so well is the fact that all that hugely expensive mayhem is attached to a plot in which his character can develop.

Bolt on some delicious black-comic moments and more than a few clever twists and blockbuster perfection isn't very far away.

A compelling but flawed drama, this is at its most convincing in the way in which it presents Norton's past as a man with a closed mind who is completely consumed by hatred and prejudice.

His performance is so powerful that it just about rips the story off its hinges.

However, the movie is so keen on his rehabilitation and transformation into a good guy (director Tony Kaye disowned the finished film) who tries to stop his hero-worshipping younger brother Edward Furlong from making the same mistakes that it loses much of its momentum.

Still, it’s strong stuff, stylishly served.

Beverly D'Angelo, Avery Brooks, Stacy Keach and Elliott Gould are also part of the angry world.

An action-packed adventure thriller set in the Colorado Rockies starring Sylvester Stallone and John Lithgow

'So this is your idea of a foolproof plan!' Psycho John Lithgow isn't at all happy when his daring scheme to pull off a $100million mid-air robbery ends with his gang's plane crashing in the Colorado mountains. He's still keen to collect his missing loot, but what he hasn't reckoned on is the resourcefulness of expert climber Sylvester Stallone.

A rope bridge, a helicopter and a lot of very steep drops are the prime components of this hectic high-altitude thriller (the dizzy opening of which was later lampooned by Jim Carrey in Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls). The scenery and the special effects are often breathtaking; Lithgow's posh British villain is ably complimented by that of his sadistic sidekick Craig Fairbrass; and only Stallone could get away with bounding up a freezing, icy mountain in a T-shirt. Precision-tooled hokum.

Standout moments include the long wedding-party celebrations at the start, De Niro's homecoming (wearing a Green Beret uniform) to Walken's girlfriend, Meryl Streep, and what has to be cinema's saddest rendition of the American anthem, God Bless America.

Walken won one of the film's five Oscars for his performance but, sadly, co-star John Cazale - who was engaged to Streep - died of cancer before it was released.

Giving a charismatic, hard-hitting performance, McQueen is the epitome of 1960s cool as cop Frank Bullitt, who investigates the murder of a Mob informer and finds top-level corruption.

Jacqueline Bisset' strikingly warm portrayal as his love interest turned her into an international sex symbol and Robert Vaughn sweats impressively as a sleazy politician.

The plot will keep you guessing right up to the end and this amazingly tense, well-staged cop action thriller is a much-loved classic.

Unmissable.

Director Stanley Kubrick's bleak but compelling Vietnam War film follows a group of raw recruits, including Matthew Modine, as they're put through training before being sent to war.

In the film's first half, former real-life sergeant R Lee Ermey puts the youngsters through their gruelling paces, barking out orders and foul-mouthed insults at machine-gun rate until all traces of their individuality is stamped out.

The action then follows them as they're thrown into combat at the height of the Tet Offensive.

Always uncompromising and at times disturbing, this doesn't make for easy viewing, but it's worth staying with.

It was filmed partly in London's Isle of Dogs and Kubrick and his crew convincingly re-create the swamps, jungles and heat of South East Asia.

Holed up on a wintry island off the coast of New England, McGregor begins stumbling on some dark secrets lurking in the charming and glib ex-PM's background, while his slippery subject's manipulative wife (Olivia Williams) and slinky aide (Kim Cattrall) hover in the background.

Director Roman Polanski and his cast have considerable fun with this adaptation of novelist Robert Harris' bestselling political thriller and the twists and turns in the plot (including a suspenseful sequence involving a car's satellite navigation) hold the viewer enthralled all the way to the nail-biting climax.

As both director and star, Clint Eastwood is on target all the way in this bleak, brilliantly acted and perfectly formed Western.

He's a widowed ex-gunslinger-turned-pig farmer who is fatefully persuaded to go back to his outlaw past.

Morgan Freeman is his sidekick, Gene Hackman is the arrogant sheriff who gives them a rough reception and Richard Harris is a sadistic gunman who gets to town before them and suffers a similar bruising time.

Eastwood ruthlessly strips the Western formula back to its bare bones of greed, murder and revenge. His version of the Frontier is a cruel, unforgiving place in which the bad guys are psychotic and even the heroes are deeply flawed.

Eastwood the actor has a granite-like authority, but as the director he is very generous to his veteran co-stars and they all get plenty of space to make their roles count.

This excellent film won four Oscars, including Best Picture, and it's unmissable.

In this briskly efficient suspense thriller, Douglas is given just hours to wrest a memorised number from the damaged mind of his mute patient Brittany Murphy, who's incarcerated in a grim mental hospital.

Douglas is on good, edgy form, but Murphy delivers a superb performance as the traumatised teen and Famke Janssen is also good value as Douglas' wife, trapped in their apartment with her leg in plaster.

Jason Statham plays a dodgy car dealer persuaded to pull off a bank heist by ex-model Saffron Burrows.

Thanks to Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais' sterling script and Roger Donaldson's taut, expert direction, this is a top-notch Brit crime thriller, based on the true story of a heist gone wrong - the unsolved robbery of a bank at London's Baker Street in 1971.

Statham and his gang plot the robbery but, unfortunately for them, the bank's safe deposit contents have links to organised crime, black power activists - and even a suppressed Royal Family scandal.

It's a gripping story and the film's commendably tense, with exciting stretches when the heist and its messy aftermath are underway.

David Suchet is nice and menacing as the chief villain and Daniel Mays, Keeley Hawes, Peter Bowles and Stephen Campbell Moore are also among the cast.

United 93 was the only hijacked plane not to hit its intended target on that day in 2001, thanks to the bravery of the hostages on board.

Without injecting hindsight and using unknown actors (including David Alan Basche and Daniel Sauli) as well as many of the real-life personnel involved, this vivid, intense dramatisation puts you in the moment as events unfold in the most devastating way.

Moving and intense, this film follows the horrific events in real time: see the confusion in the airport control towers and at military command, feel the horror when the twin towers are hit and the optimism as United 93's passengers begin to fight back.

'A sexist misogynist dinosaur' is how Judi Dench's M wryly sums up Pierce Brosnan in his first assignment as James Bond.

However, that's nothing compared to the behaviour of his one-time colleague (Sean Bean), who masterminds the theft of the GoldenEye, a revolutionary Russian satellite weapon.

Bringing much charm and a little edge to his 007, Brosnan's handling of both the quips and the action scenes - the highlight of which is a memorable chase through St Petersburg in a tank - are spot-on.

Adding extra value, Robbie Coltrane is a Russian mobster and Famke Janssen a kick-ass baddie, while Desmond Llewelyn's gadget expert Q comically makes his mark with a special pen.

How she quietly thinks her way out of trouble is the gist of the slow-burning story, which also features great roles for Samuel L Jackson and Robert De Niro, as two gormless crooks, Bridget Fonda, as a scheming surfer girl, and Robert Forster, as a laconic bail bondsman.

The escape route that Grier cleverly carves out for herself delivers black comic chuckles aplenty in a compulsive tale, impeccably written and directed by Quentin Tarantino.
