Jacob Masters faces every parent’s worst nightmare in Casualty episode Ghosts, after a distressing call from the police.

The fourth instalment of the 12-part chapter Storm Damage (BBC One, 8.25pm, Saturday 20 July 2024 — See our TV Guide for listings) picks up after the events of the previous week when Bobby Morton made shocking accusations about Jamie Cleveland to Cam Mickelthwaite.

This week Bobby doorstops Cam on his way into work and insists he meets him to talk on his break - with tragic repercussions. Elsewhere, Dylan Keogh gets devastating news and Tariq Hussein crosses a line…

Jacob Masters in turmoil

Last week Jacob Masters (Charles Venn) formally reported his son missing to the police after Blake robbed his house and left him a note reading: ‘I’m sorry Dad.’

This week, Jacob is distracted at work, as he has yet to hear anything from the police and fears the worst.

Even so, when it comes to treating vulnerable woman Bridge Carroll (Carrie Crowley, Hope Street, Smother) and her badly injured daughter Niamh (Carla Langley, Carnival Row, On the Edge) he manages to get them both to the safety of Holby ED where they begin receiving treatment… impressing nurse Sophia Peters (Kellie Shirley) in the process. 

Scary spiral

The worry eats away at Jacob and, while the ED vending machine is at the receiving end of his frustrations, his close colleagues Jan Jenning (Di Botcher) and Teddy Gowan (Milo Clarke) are concerned their friend is spiralling. 

But this is only the beginning of one of the darkest days of Jacob’s life…

Later, he receives heartbreaking news - the police have found a body matching his missing son’s description and ask him to come in and identify the young man. 

Tough-to-watch scenes at the mortuary follow, bringing Jacob to breaking point.

Is Blake dead?

Speaking exclusively to WTW about the moment Jacob identifies the body, Charles Venn says:  "It's quite an emotional moment that any parent would definitely be able to relate to and fear - it's the last thing you ever want to have to do; to ID your child is horrible.” Full interview here

Cam confronted 

Cam Mickelthwaite (Barney Walsh) starts his day off in good spirits and shares the news with his housemates Jodie Whyte (Anna Chell) and Rida Amaan (Sarah Seggari) that they can all return home following essential flood repairs. 

But the nurse’s heart drops when he’s stopped outside the ED by Bobby Morton (Ryan J Mackay), who introduces himself to Jodie and Rida as Cam’s school friend. Then, out of earshot Bobby begs Cam to have lunch with him in the Hope and Anchor so they can talk…

Cam spends the shift on edge and but does eventually meet with Bobby, where his mysterious acquaintance delves into their shared past with Jamie Cleveland (Ryan Hawley) in disturbing detail, leaving the medic in tears. 

Deeply shaken, later that day, Cam breaks down at work and at the end of the shift tells clinical lead Siobhan McKenzie (Melanie Hill) that he’s decided to hand in his notice…

Siobhan suspicious

There’s no flies on Holby ED boss Siobhan, however, and when an emotional Cam breaks down and insists he’s quitting, she starts to question why. 

Although unsure of the answer, the senior medic instantly links it to the recent recruitment of hospital board member Jamie and shocking accusations from his past. 

Armed with nothing but buzzing suspicions, can Siobhan get to the dark truth of the matter as viewers learn more about Cam’s childhood when he’s confronted by Bobby in difficult scenes?

Junior doctor Tariq Hussein (Manpreet Bachu) is doing everything he can to stay out of his cousin Rash Masum’s (Neet Mohan) way. This week he has his head turned while treating flirty patient Yasmin Zandi (Jeanie Hackman, Brave New World, Riches) and sets a dangerous precedent when he asks her out for a drink after work…

Consultant Dylan Keogh is concerned about Dervla, who is still very poorly after drinking flood water and finds himself on the backfoot while treating a demanding patient, critically ill former doctor Jack Clayton (Nicholas Woodeson, Rome, The Hour, Skyfall).

When Dylan receives more upsetting news about his four-legged companion, he struggles to process the consequences, which is made all the more difficult when he confides in Ngozi Okoye (Adesuwa Oni), who realises at the most inappropriate moment possible that Dervla is his dog, not his his girlfriend.

Also, making Dylan’s day harder this week is Sophia. She makes something of an exhibition of the doctor in front of Siobhan, who contemplates intervening between the senior medics, until the psych nurse reveals things aren’t working out at Holby and she’s been offered a transfer.

Will Sophia regret her rash judgement later when she sees another side to Dylan? 

Iain Dean (Michael Stevenson) is on baby Carter babysitting duty this week, the reality of the pregnancy begins to hit home for surrogate Nicole Piper (Sammy T Dobson), and Rida discovers that Jodie has joined a dating app. 

Has she done the dirt on on Teddy?

And, finally, former clinical lead Max Cristie (Nigel Harman) gets a mention this week from an unexpected quarter - but it's not particularly favourable!

Jacob Masters’ baby blues

Jacob Masters was rattled when he first discovered that his newborn grandson had been abandoned outside Holby ED by his estranged son, Blake, last month, but now the paramedic is determined to become guardian to baby Carter.

This week Jacob (Charles Venn) meets his grandchild’s mother Danielle Holt (Xara Chisano, Drillin) for the first time when he visits her in prison and explains his plans. But he’s in for a shock when Danielle reveals she’s decided to keep Carter with her while she serves her sentence!

At first Jacob is furious and, unable to think clearly, he puts himself in danger during the line of duty when enters a burning flat and rescues Abi Rippen (Natalie Spence, Emmerdale, The Diplomat) and Owen Poulton (Ossian Luke, EastEnders, Professor T), while his work partner Iain Dean (Michael Stevenson) looks on in horror!

Fortunately, Jacob is unscathed by his heroics, but it’s worrying that risked his life in the heat of the moment…

Change of heart

Thankfully with a little help from his close friend and paramedic partner Iain, Jacob realises that it isn’t about what he wants and that perhaps it’s best for Carter to be with his mum. 

In the spirit of openhearted reconciliation, Jacob pays Danielle another visit and apologises to her and social worker Tonya Dowling (Lily Beau) for his earlier outburst… Only for the young mum to reveal she’s also had a change of heart and wants Carter to live with him!

Suddenly Jacob finds himself raising a baby at his home. But he’s not entirely on his lonesome - Iain turns up to lend a helping hand!

But something tells us, Jacob will face many challenges as he tries to juggle work and parenthood… How will he cope with raising Carter alone?

Siobhan in turmoil

When the hospital CEO calls clinical lead Patrick Onley (Jamie Glover) for an emergency meeting, clinical nurse manager Siobhan McKenzie (Melanie Hill) knows in her bones it's not going to be good news.

And she’s right!

When Patrick returns he orders consultant Stevie Nash (Elinor Lawless) to lead the department, while he has crisis talks with Siobhan. 

It’s then that Patrick reveals that a damning documentary about Holby ED’s deadly failings will be airing later that night!

To make matters worse, the programme contains the sensitive body camera footage that Siobhan accidentally sent to everyone in the department last week. 

Now the big question is, Who is the whistleblower? 

Siobhan is certain that it can’t possibly be anyone from the team, but Patrick isn’t convinced… 

We smell scapegoats and a witch hunt in Casualty's near future.

Rash’s fresh pain

When Rash Masum (Neet Mohan) spots his online therapist Uma Mehta (Arinder Sadhra) waiting to be seen in the ED after an accident with a kitchen knife, he offers to try and get her seen more quickly. 

While treating her, it becomes clear that Uma doesn’t recognise Rash, which leaves the grieving medic understandably hurt. 

Reeling, Rash confides in his cousin Tariq Hussein (Manpreet Bachu), who - with his usual sensitivity - thinks it’s hilarious. 

Once Uma discovers who Rash is, she feels dreadful and apologises - and it’s plain to see she’s under a lot of pressure from her pushy husband Aadi (Tariq Rasheed, For Life) - but even so, the damage is done and their patient-therapist trust is broken…

Rash at boiling point

As well as treating Uma and taking the lead on burns victim Abi, this episode of Casualty sees Rash treating anxious patient Yannick Abadi (Al Nedjari, Coronation Street, Bridgerton). Kindly Rash goes above and beyond to reassure traumatised Yannick that his cancer hasn’t returned. 

But later, when tallying up the events of the day, Patrick gives Rash a public dressing down for wasting resources. Fed up with being expected to treat patients like they’re numbers in a queue, the younger doctor angrily pushes back and gives Patrick a piece of his mind!

Although Stevie supports Rash, Patrick is left speechless at his junior’s outburst. 

Has their working relationship become irreparable?

Stevie tracks down Dylan Keogh

Faith Cadogan (Kirsty Mitchell) confides in Stevie that she’s still trying to unsuccessfully get hold of missing medic Dylan Keogh (William Beck) and is becoming increasingly worried about him.

Stevie, too, is concerned about the consultant and after a day of running the ED it’s abundantly obvious how much they need him. So she decides to pay Dylan an impromptu visit at his barge when her shift ends… 

Strictly confidential

When she gets there, Dylan is doing a deep dive into past medical cases and there’s a bottle of gin sitting on his desk… 

With neither consultant interested in small talk, they jump straight into the issue at hand, and Dylan makes a shocking revelation to his colleague!

It looks like Patrick’s accusations have really done a number on Dylan’s mental health and medical confidence. Can Stevie help him?

Stevie and Faith make a great team as they lead the ED in a time of crisis.

Jodie Whyte (Anna Chell) comes in for a ferocious tongue lashing from Siobhan, who is under enormous pressure as news of the documentary breaks. 

Ngozi Okoye (Adesuwa Oni) is a reassuring presence as a nervous Rash makes life and death decisions in resus. 

Meanwhile, Patrick briefs the team on the TV documentary and reveals some of them may make an appearance when the expose is released later that evening! 

And finally, Stevie wins ‘Weirdest Case of the Week’ when she treats veterinary student Jonah Quek (Mason Dhokia).

Casualty favourite Jacob Masters has been dividing fans for months now thanks to his involvement in Robyn Miller’s tragic death, subsequent guilt, shock career change and problems fitting into his new paramedic role — to name just a few issues!

Jacob (Charles Venn) has always been popular with his co-workers at Holby Hospital, but since the death of Robyn (Amanda Henderson) he’s found himself in a lonely, emotional wilderness.

Yet, despite all that, Jacob has also garnered a lot of sympathy, with viewers understanding the pressures he was under while running the ED nursing department, his reasons for quitting, support for his decision to retrain as a paramedic and concerns for his mental health and well-being.

It’s uncharacteristic behaviour from our Jacob, and even barmaid Billie Lawrence (played by Ayesha Antoine, Grange Hill, Holby City, In the Long Run, Endeavour) is worried about him…

Jacob Masters’ DEADLY decision

Former nurse Jacob Masters hasn’t covered himself in glory since joining the Holby paramedic team, and this week his ongoing maverick actions get him taken off duty!

The drama kicks off when Jacob (Charles Venn) attends a shout-out with Iain Dean and Teddy Gowan where telecommunications engineer Ron Bellows (Connor Byrne, best known for playing Mike Milligan in the Tracy Beaker franchise) is hanging from a building by a safety rope with a loose, live cable threatening to fatally electrocute him! 

Given the deadly situation, Iain (Michael Stevenson) orders Teddy (Milo Clarke) and Jacob to help pull the man to safety. Jacob, however, has other ideas and leaves the scene to seek additional help! Teddy and Iain frantically attempt to save Ron on their own, but the rope snaps and he plummets to the ground!

Guilt and grief spiral

The paramedic trio race Ron to the ED, where doctors reveal he’s facing devastating, life-changing injuries. Furious, Iain removes Jacob from duty for the rest of the shift and suggests that he needs to stop trying to prove himself after the tragic death of nurse Robyn Miller (Amanda Henderson) earlier this year. 

With Iain’s words ringing in his ears, Jacob turns to Charlie Fairhead (Derek Thompson) and confesses that he thought he was doing the right thing by starting over as a paramedic, but now doesn’t fit into either department. 

Lost, lonely and sinking into despair, Jacob makes his way to Lazy Jane's bar and drowns his sorrows in whiskey… with Jacob knocking them back like a sailor on shore leave, even barmaid Billie (Ayesha Antoine who's starred in Grange Hill, In the Long Run and played nurse Rachel Baptiste in Holby City) is concerned about the medic.

Faith’s cold turkey nightmare

Last week Faith Cadogan made the brave decision to flush her pills and kick her addiction. This week the advanced clinical practitioner takes the day off work so she can struggle with the side effects in secrecy.

But Faith’s well-laid plan goes to pot when she pops into the ED to get something from her locker and is roped into working a hectic shift by Stevie Nash. 

Determined Faith (Kirsty Mitchell) does her best, but while treating a zookeeper, Mattie Falkner (Shamia Chalabi) who’s been bitten by a venomous snake, she struggles to perform her medical duties. 

Concerned Stevie (Elinor Lawless) and clinical nurse manager Donna Jackson (Jaye Jacobs) advise she take some time out, but Faith’s nightmare is only just beginning!

While cooling off in a store cupboard, disorientated and panicked Faith is attacked by a Sri Lankan cobra, which has escaped from its hiding place in Mattie's bag...

Will anyone find Faith before it’s too late?

Jan’s call of duty

Jan Jenning is doing everything she can to care for her ex-husband Gethin West, maintain her marriage to Ffion Morgan, and carry out her work duties — but it's a difficult balancing act. 

This week Jan (Di Botcher) is incandescent with rage when her incarcerated son Ross refuses to get in touch, despite her informing the prison that his father has Motor Neurone Disease. Underlying Jan’s anger are her fears for Gethin, who’s determined to end his life in the near future…

Jan reluctantly heads to work, worried about leaving Gethin (Bob Pugh) alone. While on shift, however, she has a moment of inspiration while on a shout-out at the seaside to treat upbeat busker Alvin Reid.

Look who’s back!

Alvin is played by TV legend Louis Emerick, best known for his roles as Mick Johnson in Brookside, PC Walsh in Last of the Summer Wine, Mike Thornberry in Coronation Street, and a recurring guest role on Casualty from 2003 until 2006, playing Mike Bateman, husband of nurse Tess Bateman (Suzanne Packer).

Despite being attacked, Alvin’s upbeat attitude to life, inspires Jan to pull a sickie and take Gethin to the beach for the day! 

Initially, Gethin’s not too happy about their sudden day trip and storms off. Sitting alone, Jan is joined by Alvin. He opens up about a heartbreaking personal tragedy and his hopeful approach to life, re-motivating Jan to give Gethin a great day out. 

Seeing what it means to her, Gethin grudgingly goes along with Jan’s plans and ends up enjoying a nostalgic afternoon with his ex-wife. Has Jan done enough to give Gethin a different perspective?

Also in Casualty this week

Stevie’s eyes light up at the prospect of treating a snake bite patient, but with delays in getting the anti-venom, Faith fumbling during treatment, and zookeeper Mattie’s condition deteriorating rapidly, has she bitten off more than she can chew?

Meanwhile, it comes to Donna and Stevie’s attention that all is not well with Faith… but will they twig just why, especially when Faith refuses painkillers, despite clearly being in agony?

Paramedic Teddy Gowan (Milo Clarke) is on cloud nine after his first date with doctor Paige Allcott (Shalisha James-Davis). Could this be the start of something special? 

Elsewhere, Jan’s marriage is coming apart at the seams, with the paramedic and her police officer wife reduced to communicating through post-it notes. With Ffion (Stirling Gallacher) conspicuous by her absence, it looks like their relationship is hitting the rocks…

A subdued Sah is less moved by Alvin's joviality than Jan is. Is something weighing on their mind?

Cameron 'Cam' Micklethwaite (Barney Walsh) becomes exasperated with fellow nurse Ryan Firth (Eddie-Joe Robinson) continually pranking him during their shift. When Cam spots a snake on a bed, he naturally assumes it's another one of Ryan’s jokes — until Donna overhears him talking about it, and realises a cobra's on the loose!

Donna panics at the thought of having to evacuate the ED — again! — and goes in search of clinical lead Max Cristie (Nigel Harman). Cam and Jodie Whyte (Anna Chell) have other ideas, however, and go on a snake hunt… Will they live to regret this wild course of action? 

And, on a lighter note, Dylan Keogh (William Beck) and Donna’s carshare adventures continue with the chalk and cheese friends coming to a new understanding. It looks like the start of a beautiful friendship!

Jacob Masters has BIG regrets 

Will Jacob Masters recklessness cost Teddy Gowan his life?

Since joining the paramedic team, former ED nurse Jacob hasn’t exactly been following the rules. Last week Jacob defied regulations and shared his personal phone number with vulnerable shopkeeper Krish Jethwani. 

Now, Jacob (Charles Venn) realises his mistake as Krish (EastEnders star Anil Goutam) calls him whenever he is attacked and robbed by a gang of local teenagers. 

In the opening scenes of this week’s Casualty, Jacob firmly tells Krish that he can’t help him any more, setting in motion a deadly chain of events…

Teddy and Sah caught in the crossfire

Shortly afterwards, Teddy Gowan (Milo Clarke) and Sah Brockner (Arin Smethurst) are called to reports of a gunshot at the shop… 

There, Teddy and Sah discover a horrifying scene — Krish has killed one of his attackers and another is fighting for his life. 

Frightened and increasingly desperate, Krish takes the paramedics hostage but Sah secretly manages to turn on the emergency button on their radio…

Elsewhere, Jacob and his paramedic partner Iain Dean (Michael Stevenson) are treating patient Craig Broom (Brassic star Neil Ashton) who is in a bit of a bind, when they overhear the commotion on their radios. 

Despite Iain’s stern warnings Jacob races to the scene intent on saving his colleagues. Meanwhile, Teddy is on the verge of getting Krish to put down the gun and hand himself over to the police when Jacob bursts in, escalating the deadly situation. Furious Krish fires the gun at Sah, only for brave Teddy to throw himself in front of his friend. 

Teddy is shot and left fighting for his life. Will he die?

Faith’s secrets exposed?

Cracks start to appear in mum-of-three Faith Cadogan’s secret life this week when her daughter Natalia (Zoe Brough) reveals that she knows she's seeing someone. 

How will Faith’s children react when they discover Iain is dating their mother — and will they realise the drug-addicted nurse is hiding something else? 

Faith (Kirsty Mitchell) believes she’s got her addiction down to a fine art, but the nurse clearly isn’t nearly as good at covering her tracks as she thought…

Jan’s remorse and anguish

Paramedic boss Jan Jenning (Di Botcher) is in a furious temper this week, which she unleashes on ex-husband Gethin West (Robert Pugh) when she catches him going to the pub before a hospital appointment. 

When Teddy attempts to stick up for Gethin, Jan then turns on her nephew. Will she live to regret her harsh words when Teddy is shot?

Prior to this, however, Jan runs into a familiar face outside the ED. Louis Marsh (The A Word’s Travis George, who guest starred in Casualty episode Skin Deep last year) is in a state of distress. He reveals that his girlfriend Lily Mellors (Doctors’ Bethany Asher) is pregnant and asks for Jan’s help.

Rida intervenes 

In the ED Lily is refusing to speak with doctor Rash Masum (Neet Mohan), as she’s terrified she’ll be forced to have a termination. Jan persuades the scared mum-to-be to open up, but when she takes a tough-love approach with Lily, nurse Rida Amaan steps in. 

Rida (Sarah Seggari) takes Rash and Jan aside and gives them a stern talking to about how they’re speaking to Lily. Rida reveals that she knows what she’s talking about because she has a disabled family member, giving both Jan and Rash pause for thought. 

After being taken to task, Jan questions her behaviour across the board for the first time that day. Will Rash and Jan learn to listen to Lily and earn her respect and trust? 

Gethin’s sad secret

After Rida’s intervention, Jan realises her anger towards Gethin was unkind and unacceptable. She apologises, which leads to Gethin opening up about his medical condition. But how will Jan react when he asks her to keep it a secret from her wife, Ffion Morgan (Stirling Gallacher)? 

Later, when Jan is distraught over Teddy’s condition, will she lash out at Gethin again, or could this be a new chapter of support in their acrimonious relationship? 

Also in Casualty this week

Donna Jackson (Jaye Jacobs) is giving Dylan Keogh (William Beck) the cold shoulder after his inaction last week led to her car being towed. Tensions simmer between the pair as Donna’s car troubles continue this week and she’s forced to get the bus to work. Dylan thinks he has a solution, but will it backfire?

Nurse Jodie Whyte (Anna Chell) continues to impress as she works alongside Dylan to try and save Teddy, who’s in a critical condition and needs surgery… 

Meanwhile, Sah is having the birthday from hell. Although shaken by the shooting they manage to hold it together to get their friend to the ED for urgent treatment. After the shocking events, will Sah be left traumatised by the twists and turns in this week's Casualty? 

And finally, at the top of this episode Iain reveals he’s paired with Jacob to give an informal assessment of the new paramedic. Something tells us there won’t be a glowing report. By the shift’s end Iain is furious with his friend for leaving while they were treating Craig Broom. Now, with Teddy’s life hanging in the balance and many still blaming Jacob for Robyn Miller’s death, could it be curtains for the maverick medic’s career in Holby?

Jacob Masters struggles with the rules

In Casualty episode Pride and Prejudice paramedic recruit Jacob Masters (Charles Venn) is paired with Teddy Gowan (Milo Clarke) and excited to get stuck into another rollercoaster shift in his new role.

Soon, however, Jacob realises the paramedics face just as many agonising hurdles as the ED nurses!

Frustrated by procedure, he unleashes his maverick medic side…

Where it starts...

Jacob and Teddy’s first shout out is to shopkeeper Krish Jethwani (EastEnders’ Anil Goutam), who is injured and terrified after his shop has been smashed up by local teengers. It’s clear Krish is in a vulnerable position, but once he’s been patched up, the paramedics have no choice but to leave him to move onto the next call. 

Jacob is infuriated when they’re diverted to a drunk and disorderly, and although more experienced Teddy advises him to learn to deal with it, it’s clear the former nurse isn’t happy!

Jacob on destructive path?

Later, while doing a handover at the ED, Jacob and Teddy run into Krish, who has new injuries. However, they can’t stop, as there's another call to get to...

As the shift progresses, Jacob becomes increasingly furious when they’re continually diverted and decides to take matters into his own hands! He lies to control and says that they’ve already made contact with the next patient, breaks down their door and saves their life.

Jacob feels buoyed and vindicated by his actions, despite Teddy’s disapproval, and later, after his shift he decides to help Krish by any means necessary!

Jacob is clearly in search of redemption after the death of nurse Robyn Miller. He's also still impacted by his abusive relationship with Tina Mollett. But by breaking the rules and branching out on his own, has he sounded the death knell for his career?

Jan Jenning’s blast from the past turmoil

For the first time in months Jan Jenning’s life hasn’t been a living nightmare. That’s set to change, however, when she gets a shock blast from the past!

This week the paramedic boss is called out to check on a homeless man living in a local scrapyard who’s believed to be dead. So imagine Jan’s horror when the man in question is very much alive — and turns out to be her alcoholic ex-husband Gethin West!

There’s no love lost between the pair, who were married for twenty years and had son Ross — a ruthless drug dealer — together. 

Rattled, Jan (Di Botcher) can’t wait to admit Gethin (Robert Pugh, who played Casualty paramedic Andrew Ponting from 1986 until 1987) into the ED and be rid of him. 

But when consultant Dylan Keogh makes a shocking discovery about Gethin, will she be forced to have a change of heart, despite their bad blood?

Rookie nurse Ryan Firth’s job is in jeopardy when nurse manager Donna Jackson discovers he’s been telling whoppers. Donna (Jaye Jacobs) gives Ryan (Eddie-Joe Robinson) a stern warning and one shift to redeem himself. If Ryan hasn’t proved his worth by the end of the day, he’s out! How far will Ryan go to keep his job?

Prior to this, Donna is already having the day from hell. Before she’s even parked her car she manages to save the life of a man, who has collapsed outside the ED — seriously impressing consultant Dylan Keogh in the process. Later, however, she discovers that her car has been clamped! 

Yet Donna’s pleasantly surprised when Dylan (William Beck) offers to get it sorted. Could this be the beginning of a beautiful friendship? 

Nurse Rida Amaan (Sarah Seggari) is delighted to get stuck into the medicine side of the role this week and impresses her seniors as she assists with the treatment of a double stabbing. The victims are two inmates, Chloe and Kat (Anne O’Riordan, Call the Midwife), from Holby Women’s Prison and are accompanied by guards James Willis (Richard Lumsden, Millie Inbetween) and Samantha ‘Sam’ Barnes (Lucy Thackeray, Hatton Garden. But little does Rida know her life is in danger, as there is more to this story than meets the eye…

Nurse Jodie Whyte (Anna Chell) is also in the thick of it this week — but in a slightly different way — when she’s tasked with treating Jan’s ex, Gethin. Before the shift is over, Jodie is being given the hairdryer treatment from a furious Jan. What has Jodie done wrong?

Meanwhile, it’s clear that fellow newbie Cameron 'Cam' Micklethwaite (Barney Walsh) has a crush on Jodie! It’s glory hunter Ryan, however, who leaves Cam crushed. By the end of the shift, Ryan has done something sneaky, that could see him ostracised by the other recruits…

Clinical lead Max Cristie (Nigel Harman) sets the new nurses a challenge — the person who has impressed him most by the end of their shift wins a prize. Rida, Ryan and Cam all accept with great enthusiasm, but Jodie — Max’s secret daughter! — warns them that they’ll only be disappointed. It looks like a family reunion is not happening anytime soon.

Teddy Gowan’s shift this week proves testing for the paramedic when he’s paired with Jacob Masters. As an angry Jacob breaks the rules at every turn, will Teddy be forced to do something he’d rather not?

And finally, while Jan’s speechless when her homeless, alcoholic ex-husband Gethin West turns up, he’s not best pleased to see his former wife either! There are some smashing scenes between Di Botcher (Jan) and Robert Pugh (Gethin), who long-time viewers will remember played Casualty paramedic Andrew Ponting in the very first series of the medical drama. Whether a flying visit or here for the foreseeable, it’s great to have him back in Holby-land.

Jacob Masters at breaking point

Emotions are running high in Holby ED. It’s the day of Robyn Miller’s funeral and senior nurse manager Jacob Masters has organised agency cover so Robyn’s friends and colleagues can say goodbye. 

Last week Robyn (Amanda Henderson) passed away after a road traffic accident left her fighting for her life. Not even super surgeon Sacha Levy (Holby City’s Bob Barrett) could save the beloved nurse. Directly after Robyn tragically died in theatre, many of Jacob’s staff quit, including David Hide and Marty Kirkby!

This week, ostracised Jacob (Charles Venn) plans to go to the funeral but changes his mind when it’s clear he isn’t welcome. Instead, Jacob throws himself into work and attempts to bury his feelings. But some things just won’t stay buried... 

As the shift continues, Jacob’s guilt festers as he treats grieving father Clark (In the Long Run and The Crown star Jude Akuwudike). Clark claims to have a message for Jacob from beyond the grave, insisting someone from the other side wants to talk to him. 

Unsettled, Jacob leaves the ED and later confesses to paramedic Iain Dean (Michael Stevenson) that, like everyone else, he blames himself for an overworked Robyn getting behind the wheel in an exhausted and emotional state. 

In a shock move, broken Jacob makes a drastic decision… How will it affect Holby ED?

Dylan Keogh in dangerous territory

The hunt is on for Holby's evil care home predator. Physiotherapist Roy Welch (City Central’s Michael Begley) is on the run after being named in the press, but Dylan Keogh (William Beck) is determined to get justice for the victims… 

Was Roy Welch on your list of suspects?

This episode opens with DCI Supriya Vadra (recurring guest star Sheena Bhattessa) doing house-to-house searches when she’s taken by surprise by fugitive Welch and held at knifepoint… 

Supriya bravely tries to stop him, but is attacked and stabbed in the process. While on the verge of bleeding to death she contacts her police partner Graeme and falls unconscious…

Short lived happiness… 

Meanwhile, back at the ED it looks like things are starting to turn around for Dylan Keogh.

He is developing feelings for Supriya, and even asks his ex, Faith Cadogan, for some advice.

He’s been exonerated by the hospital board for his maverick investigation into the abuse at Holby’s care homes and deemed fit to return as ED clinical lead. Although he will have to undergo an interview first…

And Max Cristie has called a truce — even offering to step aside as clinical lead, so that Dylan has no competition for the role. Although the truce doesn’t extend to teasing — and Max takes great delight in winding up bashful Dylan (William Beck) about his crush!

It looks like the beginning of a playful new chapter in the consultant's life, but if we’ve learned anything from Casualty recently, it's to expect the unexpected…

Life and death decisions

Dylan is brought sharply back to reality when Supriya is brought into the ED, with her life hanging in the balance. He pulls out all the stops to save her, but only time will tell if she survives her injuries.

Later, when a badly injured Welch is raced into resus after a police pursuit takes a deadly turn, Dylan insists on treating him, despite Max’s protests.

Not wanting to give too much away about this dramatic storyline, what we can reveal is that Dylan’s actions — fuelled by his sense of justice — bring an end to his uneasy truce with Max.

Expect raised voices, questionable actions, and a far-reaching fallout…

Faith under pressure

Faith Cadogan (Kirsty Mitchell) isn’t quite herself as she endures an unhappy shift on the day of Robyn’s funeral.

Having volunteered to work so that others can say goodbye to Robyn, the dedicated APC nurse throws herself into caring for her patients. First up is distraught bride-to-be Maria, who’s in the ED with her pushy and critical mother Christine (Liza Goddard, star of Skippy: The Bush Kangaroo, Doctor Who and Bergerac). Can Faith pull a few strings and get Maria (Charlotte Mills, Agatha Raisin, Dodger) to her wedding on time? 

Faith’s next patient is a trickier customer… Drug addict Kerrel (Eiry Hughes, Stella, Doctors) inserts herself in numerous patient situations, posts angry videos about the overstretched ED, and demands prescription pain relief. 

Faith attempts to take Kerrel in hand, while also showing her compassion and care. But when a prescription goes missing and Kerrel begins to kick off, Faith’s calm facade is in danger of crumbling… 

Is Faith struggling more than anyone realises?

Grieving Paige Allcott (Shalisha James-Davis) makes it absolutely clear that Jacob isn’t welcome at Robyn’s funeral and vocalises her disgust that the department can suddenly afford to hire agency nurses… Will Paige’s ex Rash Masum (Neet Mohan) comfort the bereft junior doctor? And what effect will her words have on Jacob?

Paramedic Iain Dean (Michael Stevenson) finds he’s unable to resist Faith’s charms, and bends the rules when she makes an unusual request!

Supriya’s colleague Graeme (Paul McQuaid, Doctors, Fair City) bursts Dylan’s bubble when he makes a revelation about the deathly ill DCI’s private life.  

Max (Nigel Harman) finds himself on the sharp end of Faith’s temper.

Senior nurse Jacob Masters is finally back at work in Casualty and keen to move on after being brutally attacked by his abusive ex-girlfriend Tina Mollett. His traumatic past soon returns to the present, however, when evil Tina returns to the ED to claim back her man! 

Knowing how bad she is for him, however, Jacob rejects her attempts to reunite. This makes Tina angry. Very angry. So she decides to get his attention the only way she knows how. Charles Venn reveals more...

Jacob's back at work after being attacked by Tina - how’s he coping?

"Well, at this point, Jacob’s following the out of sight, out of mind theory. He thinks that if he can zone in on work that would be the best panacea to deal with this traumatic period. If I don’t see her… ignore her messages… then it’ll almost be like it never happened. The past is done. I’m moving forward. That’s his mentality - but it’s not the realistic way of dealing with it."

Is part of his 'survival' keeping his secret from his friends in the ED?

"Definitely! He’s ashamed about what’s happened to him. In many ways he can’t believe that he was subjected to that abuse and that he allowed himself to be subjected to it. He's like: 'I'm Jacob, I’m a confident, hard-working, Alpha male' this is just a blip but I can move on and grow from this. I don’t need to discuss it, or share it with anyone else. As far as I’m concerned, that’s yesterday's news'."

Except Tina then turns up - how does he react to seeing her again?

"It totally arrests him. He experiences that horrible shock and trauma of suddenly seeing someone you never thought you’d see again. You think everything is fine but seeing them activates your muscle memory and you go back to the time you suffered that trauma. This wall you put up as a form of defence comes tumbling down when you see the person who’s responsible for your woes."

So he’s still suffering the after effects of her abuse?

"Very much so. He’s very much suffering a form of PTSD. The worst thing you can do is try and run away from something traumatic that’s happened in your life. Aftershock is a real thing."

How does he deal with her being in the ED?

"At the centre of all this, it’s about control and Jacob had his control seized from him by Tina. So he tries to regain control of the situation. He tries to reject her advances, making it very clear to her: ‘I don’t really want to interact with you right now’ and publicly announcing that they’re no longer together. But her allure, her presence and the amount of damage she’s caused to Jacob is overwhelming, is too strong. So his attempt is short-lived."

Annoyed by his rejection, Tina resorts to other measures to get Jacob's attention… 

"Tina’s going to get Jacob’s attention by hook or by crook. Her attitude is: ‘If you’re not going to listen to me, then I’m going to make sure somebody else will make you listen to me… and by taking a patient hostage I demand that you speak to me.’ For Tina, if that’s what it takes then so be it."

Jacob finds Tina - and patient Ren - in the ambo station. Is Tina able to be at all rational?

"On the outside, Tina’s like: ‘I love you, I just want the best for us and I feel you’re not appreciating my efforts.’ Because the fact that Jacob is moving on, that he’s trying to gain control to break this siren-like spell that she’s put him under. So Tina has to go to these extreme measures to make it happen. But when she doesn’t get the attention she expects she resorts to even MORE extreme tactics!"

Tensions escalate quickly - is Jacob genuinely terrified?

"It’s not initial terror at first. I think Jacob is trying to be assertive with Tina to take control of the situation. But then Tina resorts to even MORE extreme tactics by making a controversial revelation. In that moment, Jacob’s old feelings for Tina come flooding back and he feels he needs to be there for her. Tina’s regained control."

Where does Jacob get the strength from to finally stand up to Tina?

"Well, paramedic Iain reminds Jacob that Tina is a very cunning, duplicitous woman and she’s using this 'spell' she’s put him under, to her advantage. But Iain can CLEARLY see what she’s doing and says you may have fooled Jacob, but you don’t fool me. Despite everything, though, it looks like Jacob will still defend Tina's honour. That's how much he's damaged by what she's done."

Senior nurse Jacob Masters is back at work and keen to move on from his abusive ex-girlfriend Tina Mollett. But erasing the nasty nurse from his life isn’t as easy as scrubbing her name off the work rota, as Jacob discovers in this week’s Casualty (BBC1, 9.30pm – see our TV Guide for listings) when twisted Tina returns to the ED determined to win him back!

Although Jacob's requested an agency nurse, Tina (Adele James) turns up for her shift to a warm welcome from the team, who are unaware she’s been physically and mentally abusing Jacob for months. Jacob’s clearly ashamed of his abuse and is trying to act like it didn’t happen, so he’s thrown to come face-to-face with Tina again.

Jacob boldly announces to everyone in the ED that their wedding is off and actively avoids Tina as he treats patient Ren, who’s struggling to control her diabetes.

Annoyed at being ignored, Tina takes drastic action… and takes Ren hostage! When that doesn’t get the attention she demands, Tina then resorts to even MORE extreme tactics by dropping a bombshell that shocks Jacob to the core…

However, with a little help from Jacob’s good friend, paramedic Iain Dean, Tina’s true colours are soon revealed. Is Jacob’s torment finally over?

What else is happening in Casualty this week?

Elsewhere, we welcome new transgender paramedic Sah (Arin Smethurst) to work alongside working alongside Jan (Di Botcher), Teddy (Milo Clarke) and Iain (Michael Stevenson). A cool character who doesn’t want to be seen as trying too hard, Sah has a real baptism of fire on their very first shift when someone throws up on their shoes! 

As Teddy tries to sell the idea of the paramedic family, Sah seems cold and withholding - but then Sah covers for a mistake Teddy makes with Ffion and it seems Sah might just have found a place within the ambulance team…

Jacob Masters believes he’s found love at last with nurse Tina Mollett. Yet, this week in a special Casualty episode (Saturday, 24 July 2021, BBC1, 9.35pm - see our TV Guide for listings) focusing on the couple’s relationship it’s revealed appearances are chillingly deceptive!

Jacob Masters Casualty special is doing things differently...

This Saturday viewers will see Jacob Masters becoming victim to Tina Mollett’s coercive control in a shocking domestic abuse storyline in Casualty.

What makes this episode of Casualty different?

In numerous scenes between the couple Jacob (Charles Venn) must decide whether to handle situations with Tina (Adele James) assertively or passively.

Casualty viewers will then witness the results of the two different approaches. Yet, the outcome always ends with Tina manipulating Jacob into feeling bad and doubting himself!

Setting the scene of this special Casualty episode

The drama kicks off when Jacob discovers Tina (Adele James) has spent £8000 on his credit card. 

The couple are on their way to work, when we see the outcomes of Jacob handling this situation in two different ways - passively and assertively. 

Their heated and uncomfortable encounter is interrupted when they happen upon a road traffic accident. First on the scene, Jacob calls the emergency services while Tina tries to free the badly injured driver. 

The vehicle, however, begins to tilt dangerously and Jacob must act quickly to save Tina and the driver as the car explodes!

Soon after, they find Jeannie, another injured woman who appears to be involved in the accident. Holby’s a small world, and it turns out Tina knows former child carer Jeannie, as she used to treat the young woman’s father before he died.  

What happens next…

Back at the hospital Tina and Jacob’s colleagues Iain Dean, Marty Kirkby and Jade Lovall heap praise on action-hero Jacob. 

Stung with jealousy Tina subtly undermines Jacob and puts him down with jibes about his diet, exercise and spending habits. 

What follows from that point onwards is a string of disturbing encounters between the couple, where both the passive and assertive scenarios are played out.

Without wanting to give too much away, viewers can expect to see Tina secretly eavesdropping, as Jacob retreats vulnerable patient Jeannie. 

He helps Jeannie begin to accept her eating disorder by opening up about his own childhood struggles. Twisted Tina then uses the information to belittle Jacob in front of doctor Ethan Hardy!

Twisted manoeuvrings follow

As the episode progresses it soon becomes clear that nothing is off limits for Tina. 

In order to keep control, she constantly threatens to end their relationship, blows hot and cold, uses intimacy to get her own way, stings Jacob with barbed comments and backhanded compliments, accuses him of being oversensitive, uses his vulnerabilities and doubts against him, breaks patient confidentiality, and disrespects his role as a senior nurse manager. 

Jacob is left walking on eggshells and utterly unsure of himself.

Vicious showdown

Events finally take a darker, more dangerous turn when Tina insists on performing a medical procedure she’s never done before, as Jeannie’s life hangs in the balance! 

In the assertive version, Jacob refuses. In the passive scenario, Jacob allows himself to be bullied by Tina into getting her way, resulting in a backlash from acting clinical lead Dylan Keogh.  

Sadly, both choices lead to an explosive, disturbing showdown in Jacob’s office, with horrifying consequences…

Lev punches a patient

Paramedic Lev Malinovsky’s life comes crashing down in this week’s dramatic double-helping of Casualty.

Saturday’s first episode opens with Lev (Uriel Emil) happy for the first time in forever, as he spends time with new boyfriend Xander Hayes. It all goes horribly wrong, however, when the couple go for brunch and Lev reacts angrily to nasty homophonic jibes from fellow diner, Sam...

Later, Lev finds Sam (Harri Rees-Jones) beaten up and takes him to the ED for treatment. But he loses his temper again when secret drug addict Sam launches another torrent of disgusting insults. Lev, who’s spent a lifetime hiding his sexuality, sees red and violently attacks Sam! 

Horrified, Xander (Danny Szam) instantly dumps Lev. Then Sam presses charges! With brokenhearted Lev refusing to tell anyone why he punched a patient he’s arrested and taken in for questioning…

‘Lev has many conflicting elements,’ says Uriel, 46. ‘His inability to be honest is the key to understanding his inner conflict and fragile state of mind.’

Ethan’s health fears

Terrified Ethan Hardy is unable to treat a patient for the first time due to symptoms of Huntington’s disease.

Ethan lies about why he left Rash alone in Resus. Later, worried about the future, Ethan pushes Fenisha towards her ex Matthew. He offers to babysit their son Bodhi so Fenisha can go on a date with the new locum doctor...

Faith is furious with Lev

In this week’s second episode of Casualty Faith Cadogan vents her fury to paramedic Iain Dean about husband Lev hiding in a hotel while she cares for their three children.

Meanwhile, Lev comes close to punching another patient in the ED!

After Iain encourages Faith (Kirsty Mitchell) to cut Lev some slack she seeks out her estranged husband and attempts to help him get to the root of his anger issues. But with Lev clamming up, Faith decides to reach out to Xander.

In an emotional heart-to-heart, Xander reveals why he split up with Lev and explains exactly why the paramedic assaulted Sam. Realising that Lev needs people who love him on his side, Faith begs Xander to convince Lev to tell the truth about the incident with Sam.

Tina’s jealousy raises red flags

Jacob Masters and Tina Mollett are the picture of happiness following their declarations of love last week. But worryingly the relationship takes a sinister turn in Saturday’s second episode of Casualty...

When Tina (Adele James) suggests they move in together, Jacob (Charles Venn) insists he’s happy with how things are, leaving his other half feeling hurt and rejected.

Throughout the ensuing shift Tina’s insecurity begins to manifest in an increasingly erratic manner. First she flirts with Matthew to make Jacob jealous. When that fails Tina begins to flounder in her nursing duties. She is resentful when Jade shines in Resus while she struggles, and afterwards is furious with Jacob for heaping praise on the young nurse. 

Jacob, unable to understand why Tina is blowing hot and cold, confronts her and explains he simply doesn’t want to rush their relationship. Insecure Tina, however, believes his reluctance to take the next step is related to his feelings for Connie Beauchamp! 

Later, Tina spies an opportunity to manipulate Jacob. Ensuring she’s alone with unpredictable patient Dean she goads him into assaulting her. And it works! Jacob caves and asks Tina to move in with him…
