Frail Ken is set to suffer another serious health scare in Coronation Street. Could this be the end as he battles for his life?

Coronation Street's Ken Barlow will  be left battling for his life once again sparking fears for fans  that actor Bill Roache could be quitting the cobbles.

According to The Sun, Ken will be seen fighting for his life after he suffers a  second suspected stroke.

It will come only months after Ken, who has been a character on Corrie since its first episode in 1960,  suffered a stroke towards the end of last year.

"Ken had only just recovered from the terrible stroke he suffered in October, so this latest attack hits him twice as hard", an insider from the soap told the Sun. "He is rushed to hospital and his life is very much hanging in the balance.

"Obviously for someone who was so recently ill, the chances of him coming out of it alive - let alone unscathed - are drastically reduced!"

Viewers recently saw the long-suffering father and grandfather telling his concerned offspring that he had added a Do Not Resuscitate order to his medical records. Daughter Tracy was particularly upset and reacted angrily to the news that her dad would rather die than be kept alive should he suffer another stroke.

But let's not forget Ken is made of strong stuff and is like a cat with nine lives.  During his time on the cobbles he has survived falling down a ravine, an overdose attempt and an armed siege, not to mention all the other disasters that have struck Weatherfield from tram crashes to explosions.

Actor Bill, 84, has always insisted that he would only ever leave the cobbles if he was written out of the soap or killed off. Is Street legend Ken going to survive this latest dramatic health scare or is his time as  Corrie's most loved and longest-serving character coming to an end?

Ken Barlow has had a stroke and needs to avoid stress. Not a chance, Bill Roache tells Soaplife, not with son Peter home and more troubled family on their way

So, how did Ken have a stroke? “Ken was furious with Peter [Chris Gascoyne], convinced he’d been drinking again. They began arguing, then Ken realised he could no longer talk and he keeled over!”

And Peter sprang into action, didn’t he? “Peter called the emergency services. Ken was rushed to hospital, and the doctors told Peter that his quick reaction may have saved his life because, after a stroke, it’s essential to act fast.”

So Peter caused the stroke? “Peter’s told that while the argument may have increased Ken’s blood pressure, for a man of his age a stroke could have happened at any time. Peter can’t help but blame himself, though, and Tracy [Kate Ford] certainly blames him. Ken, however, doesn’t.”

Was it difficult acting like you’ve had a stroke? “A top neurological surgeon came in, chatted to me and supervised the filming to begin with. She told me the onset of a stroke is very sudden so I ended up dropping like a stone. Ken loses the power of speech and regains it only gradually, so I bit my tongue and talked through that to get the right effect.”

How long is Ken in hospital for? “Several weeks. It’s vital he has absolutely no stress, but that’s the last thing that happens. Peter’s return has stressed him out because he knows Peter only ever comes home when he’s in trouble. Plus, Peter feels Ken’s not been much of a dad to him.

"Tracy’s a constant source of stress, then son Adam [Sam Robertson] and grandson Daniel [Rob Mallard] arrive and both have baggage. It’s very, very dysfunctional and there are so many tensions bubbling away.”

So the Barlow clan is getting bigger? “Yes. And it’s wonderful to be at the heart of this dysfunctional family. I’m thinking of Ken as Marlon Brando in The Godfather – and while he’s recovering from the stroke he sounds like him, too!”

Corrie icon Bill Roache says Ken's terrible stroke could lead to a classic Baldwin-Barlow rivalry, when his son Daniel and grandson Adam return to the Street

Corrie star Bill Roache has welcomed Ken's stroke – because it ushers in a new era for the Barlow family and yet another Barlow-Baldwin rivalry.

Ken seemed to suffer a serious stroke on Monday night after a row with prodigal son Peter Barlow, who returned in a typical cloak of mystery and trouble.

Bill told What's on TV: "Peter is an alcoholic bigamist who lies all the time and Ken knows this and he still loves him and he's hoping to find something good there. But of course he doesn't and that's the beginning of an argument that gets his blood pressure up and he has a stroke."

Ken's stroke is a herald call to his wider family, which will see the return of grandson Adam Barlow (Sam Robertson) and the debut of Rob Mallard as his son, Daniel Osbourne. Exactly how and when they arrive isn't yet known.

Bill said: "The stories are wonderful. The Barlows have always been female. Blanche and Deirdre and the children. Suddenly there are going to be four men: Peter, Ken, Daniel and Adam. It's wonderful. I'm really excited and all of them have got baggage, terrible problems and what he mustn't have, under any circumstances, is stress!"

"The great thing about Coronation Street is it draws on its own history," he said. "Daniel is an illegitimate son of Ken's, but he's a Mini Me, he looks like me and he's a university graduate... so that's an interesting ploy. The other one [Adam] is actually the son of his daughter by Mike Baldwin who's his arch enemy, so you've got the whole Baldwin conflict coming in. It's brilliantly thought out."

Coronation Street actor William Roache has admitted learning his lines “is getting a bit harder”, according to reports.

The 83-year-old actor, who plays Ken Barlow in the ITV soap, is also believed to have stated he is not a fan of doing live episodes.

“I just keep going. I turn up and learn my lines,” he told the Mirror.

“It is getting a bit harder to learn them but it does not have the same pressure as if you do a live episode. They are a nightmare.”

The popular soap celebrated ITV’s 60th birthday last year with a live episode.

William claimed viewers enjoyed watching the live episodes to see “if people will mess up and it is a nightmare”.

The actor, who has played Ken since Corrie’s first episode in 1960, was also disapproving of celebrity cameos on the show.

He said: “It is OK if they are good actors but I don’t like them bringing in people who are known for something else.”

Earlier in the week, he said his late co-star Anne Kirkbride was an alcoholic, according to The Sun newspaper.

He said Anne, who played his on-screen wife Deirdre Barlow for 42 years, had stopped drinking before her death but had been taking anti-depressants.

Anne died in January last year aged 60. She had been diagnosed with breast cancer and had also suffered a stroke.

Following his reported comments, Anne’s husband David Beckett insisted that she had not drank alcohol for many years before her death.

He told The Sun: “Whilst Anne did describe herself as an alcoholic, as many alcoholics do, she had not touched a drop of alcohol for 30 years or more.”

Coronation Street star William Roache has revealed his character Ken Barlow would not hesitate to pursue a romance with Audrey Roberts, if he knew of her true feelings.

Fans of the ITV soap have already seen Audrey, played by Sue Nicholls, confess her soft spot for Ken to Rita Tanner (Barbara Knox), despite him being in a relationship with newcomer Nessa (Sadie Shimmin) – but the show’s stalwart said the widower would 'drop everything' for the hairdresser.

William told Radio Times: “If he knew that (how Audrey felt), he would drop everything! He would like to think that she had feelings for him, but he doesn’t know. He knows that she likes him and that they get on, but I don’t think he knows.”

The actor said while Audrey’s feelings would be reciprocated, Ken has been repressing his own emotions since the death of his wife Deirdre (Anne Kirkbride).

“He certainly has feelings for her, but he hasn’t allowed himself to open up and express them until he’s fully over Deirdre,” he explained.

“He was looking for companionship of the right sort with Audrey. Initially it wasn’t anything more than that – she was a comfort, a shoulder to cry on and he enjoyed her company.”

William, who has played Ken on the show for 55 years, said he approves whole-heartedly if Audrey and Ken were to take their friendship to the next level.

“When I first heard the producers say that this is what they were going to do, I thought it was a great idea. And this is me, Bill Roache, speaking,” the 83-year-old star said.

“He’s known Audrey for 30 years, she’s been married to other people, but they’ve always had a very nice respect for each other. She’s respected the fact that Ken is a university graduate and has a degree.

“Since the death of Deirdre, she has been very warm and very sympathetic, which is laying down the foundation. So when the time is right, their relationship could grow.”

He added: “It seems to be very common that people want Ken and Audrey to get together and I like it.”

But the pair’s romance won’t be smooth sailing, as Ken teased.

He said: “It’s amazing, after all these years of just being friends, but it’s going to be stretched out – it will be on and off, they’re not just going to get together and then suddenly get married because there’s no story there. There’ll definitely be problems.”

It’s going to be an emotional time in Coronation Street over the next few weeks when news of Deirdre Barlow’s death reaches Weatherfield.

On Wednesday, the Barlows are expecting Deirdre to come home after months away with her pal Bev Unwin and have planned a surprise party for her 60th birthday. But they get a big shock when Bev turns up at No. 1 and reveals that the much-loved marrow-stuffer and pottery maker has died.

Following the death of Anne Kirkbride, who played Deirdre for more than 40 years, earlier this year, the storyline has been carefully plotted out by the show’s producers. 

The actress had taken time off the soap at the tail end of 2014, and very few people knew that she was battling breast cancer, so the news of her passing came as shock to the cast, crew and viewers of the soap.

Bill Roache, who plays Ken, has opened up to The Sun newspaper about how he felt while filming the emotional scenes, from the time the tragic news reaches the Street to the funeral, which can be seen in the following week.

“There was no Bill and Ken and Deirdre and Annie – it was just one. I felt the loss of both," he says. “From an acting point of view, it made it totally simple and totally believable and very easy to play. From the grieving and sadness point of view, it made it totally real.

“It was the only time there is a blurring of the edges between the character and the actor – it was just one, it became complete oneness.”

After Ken hears the news that his wife has died, he is given her glasses to keep in her memory.

“This is highly emotive as glasses are very personal, they’re very close to the person, but of course when I got the glasses, they were also Annie’s," added Bill. “Annie had worn those glasses for 20 years, so there was a complete merger for me."

Bev Unwin returns to Coronation Street next week, but she comes bearing bad news – Deirdre dropped dead in her garden earlier in the day!

Ken is understandably devastated by the sudden loss of the woman who he went through so much with, but his despair deepens when he learns from Bev that the reason Deirdre stayed away so long was because she was ashamed of their daughter Tracy's affair with Tony Stewart, who was in a relationship with Deirdre's best mate Liz.

Also on the Street next week, Kylie tries to get David's trust back by setting up a honey-trap in which she fools Callum into thinking they're back together. That way Sarah could see what a despicable man Callum really is and the Platts might return to some sort of normality.

Ex-Coronation Street star, Johnny Briggs has paid tribute to his former co-star, Anne Kirkbride who passed away following a short illness last week.

Johnny, who played factory boss, Mike Baldwin for 30 years believes Anne should receive a standing ovation this week as her family and friends prepare to say goodbye.

Although Anne's funeral is expected to be a private event, Johnny thinks soap legend Anne, who played Deirdre Barlow for over 40 years deserves a "good send-off".

"The streets of Manchester should be closed to traffic and she should get a standing ovation," Johnny told the Sunday Mirror.

In a storyline that gripped the nation in the early 1980s Deirdre and Mike had an affair two years into her marriage to Ken Barlow (played by William Roache) and, while she eventually chose to stay with her husband, Johnny said she "chose the wrong man" but added he scriptwriters had got it right.

Speaking of his sadness after Anne's death, Johnny described it as a "cruel loss", and added her acting in Coronation Street was "worth an Oscar".

"She was that good," he says.

Coronation Street star Anne Kirkbride has told a jury that her on-screen husband William Roache was 'always a perfect gentleman' around her.

Ms Kirkbride, a stalwart of the ITV soap as Deirdre Barlow, was called as a character witness for the actor who is accused of a series of sex assaults.

Roache, 81, is accused of using his fame and popularity to exploit 'starstruck' youngsters for sex in the mid to late 1960s.

He denies two counts of rape and four counts of indecent assault involving five complainants aged 16 and under between 1965 and 1971.

Giving evidence from the witness box at Preston Crown Court, Ms Kirkbride was asked what one word she would use to describe Roache.

She replied: "Lovely."

Ms Kirkbride said she had never seen anything worrying about Roache's behaviour on set with young women from when she joined the show in about 1972.

The actress swore on the Bible and then chose to stand as she was asked a number of questions by defending barrister Louise Blackwell QC.

She confirmed she had known Roache 'for quite some time', after she started in the soap aged 17 or 18.

Ms Kirkbride was asked how she felt on joining Coronation Street.

She replied: "I was terrified for my first day. Very nervous going.

"It was a completely new situation. I didn't know anybody.

"I very quickly got to know people and it became easier."

Asked what she thought of Roache on meeting him, she said: "He was friendly. I remember the first time I spoke to him was outside a lift and we had a really nice chat and he offered me a cigarette.

"We shared a lot of the same interests in spiritual things. I just found him very easy to talk to."

Miss Blackwell asked her: "At that time, if you had one word to describe Mr Roache what would it be?"

She replied: "Lovely."

Roache smiled in the dock as she made the comment.
