Law & Order: SVU’s Olivia (Mariska Hargitay) and her squad won't be investigating a new case tonight as Law & Order: SVU season 26 is taking a break and not airing a new episode tonight, March 27. Additionally, Law & Order season 24 and Found season 2 are also not releasing new episodes tonight.

We don’t have a confirmed explanation for the break in NBC's routine Thursday primetime rollout, but it's not uncommon for network TV shows to regularly take breaks in the release schedule of new episodes. Given Law & Order: SVU is back with a new episode next Thursday, April 3, this week’s off-week could certainly be attributed to that.

We're actually greatly anticipating the next new episode of Law & Order: SVU as the series finally heads into Carisi's (Peter Scanavino) trial. Not working in his job as assistant district attorney, but heading to court as a victim. Following the events of him being held hostage at the corner bodega earlier this season, the episode will cover the trial of his assailant. Here is the official synopsis of the episode titled "Accomplice Liability" that again airs on Thursday, April 3, at 9 pm ET/PT on NBC:

"Carisi attempts to put aside his role as prosecutor to serve as a witness in a trial; Benson tries to help a rape survivor struggling with her recovery."

For those who need a weekly fix of Law & Order: SVU, now would be a great time to catch up with anything you've missed this season on Peacock. Heck, you may want to take the opportunity to rewatch your favorite episodes from past seasons, as the entire series is also on the streaming services. All you need is a Peacock subscription. Currently, the streamer offers several options for would-be subscribers, and it's the next-day streaming home for all NBC and Bravo content.

However, it's also possible that a new episode isn’t airing due to the big night over on ABC. March 6 marks the return of ABC’s Thursday night lineup, after a long hiatus. 9-1-1 season 8, Doctor Odyssey and Grey’s Anatomy season 21 are all back with new episodes, marking the first time since November 21, 2024. So there are plenty of fans of those respective shows who are itching to see what’s next. It's speculation on our part, but NBC very well may have made note of that.

In terms of Law & Order: SVU, the show won’t be completely off the air tonight. A previously aired episode of the cop drama will be shown on NBC at 10 pm ET/PT. Prior to that, two back-to-back reruns of the brand-new NBC series, Suits LA, air starting at 8 pm ET/PT.

NBC’s regular Thursday night lineup returns on March 13, with new episodes of Law & Order, Law & Order: SVU and Found. The next new episode of Law & Order: SVU titled “Undertow” premieres at 9 pm ET/PT, and here is a brief synopsis of the episode:

“A complicated case of sex and drug use divides the squad; Carisi must convince a jury to focus on the law and not the defendant's accusations.”

Mariska Hargitay has managed to do it again, starring as the incomparable Captian Olivia Pope of Manhattans’ SVU in Law & Order: SVU season 26. Even as the show continues its run as TV’s longest-running drama in primetime, SVU still captivates audiences with the gut-wrenching stories of victims and the brave heroism displayed by Olivia and her team; a team that has expanded this season to include new member, Detective Kate Silva (Juliana Aidén Martinez).

With the latest season having just aired its high-stakes fall finale on Thursday, November 21, many viewers are eagerly waiting to see what happens next, and rightfully so, given the life-or-death danger that Carisi (Peter Scanavino) found himself in (don’t worry, we won’t spoil what went down here). While it’s been said patience is a virtue, most people don’t like to wait for a good thing. Thankfully, Law & Order: SVU season 26 starts airing new episodes again at the top of the New Year on Thursday, January 16, at 9 pm ET/PT on NBC. So after you’ve had your fill of holiday cheer, the hit drama will be ready to help you get back in the swing of things for 2025.

Of course, what would Law & Order Thursdays be without the original series? Law & Order season 24 also debuted its fall finale on November 21, and its winter premiere launches before SVU’s at 8 pm ET/PT, again on January 16. While it’s not a Law & Order series, NBC’s Thursday primetime lineup in January will again be rounded out by a new episode of Found season 2, which airs on the same day at 10 pm ET/PT.

With all of that being said, SVU fans have plenty of time during the hiatus to catch up with anything they’ve missed this season over on Peacock, the next-day streaming home for NBC. If you happen to be all caught up on season 26, you can search through the streamer for your favorite SVU episodes of all time and rewatch them.

However, if you’re in the mood to perhaps watch something new and different, as SVU fans ourselves, we have a few recommendations. Netflix’s Lincoln Lawyer season 3 and new CBS show Matlock may not deal so much with police apprehension of crime, but they’re rooted in the courtroom and are solid shows. Matlock episodes can be streamed on Paramount Plus.

If you just love watching the good guys chase the “bad” guys, then some of Dick Wolf’s (the creator of SVU) other procedurals may fit the bill. FBI, FBI: International and FBI: Most Wanted all have episodes available to stream on Paramount Plus.

Law & Order: SVU is back with new episodes on January 16. The series airs live episodes on NBC, and episodes become available the day after on Peacock.

The high-ranking officer will be played by two-time Emmy nominee, Maura Tierney. The actress spent years playing Abby Lockhart in ER, and recently has been in projects like Twisters, The Iron Claw, American Rust and Your Honor.

Rounding out the cast are Hugh Dancy (Downton Abbey: A New Era) as Nolan Price, Odelya Halevi (Black Adam) as Samantha Maroun, Mehcad Brooks (Mortal Kombat) as Jalen Shaw, Reid Scott (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) as Vincent Riley and Tony Goldwyn (Scandal) as Nicholas Baxter.

In its silver anniversary run, Law & Order: SVU remains a staple in primetime as evidenced by its loyal fanbase. Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and her team, recently retooled with some new faces, solve some of the most provocative cases in New York City, keeping viewers captivated as they do. As great as Law & Order: SVU season 25 has been so far, fans will have to exercise some patience as no new episode airs tonight, April 25. 

Law & Order Thursdays as a whole is taking a break from airing new episodes as Law & Order season 23 and Law & Order: Organized Crime season 4 join Law & Order: SVU in not debuting new episodes tonight. NBC is opting to air reruns of each show in their usual timeslots instead. 

As of publication, we don't have a concrete reason as to why Law & Order: SVU and its sister shows aren't airing new episodes this week. However, if we were to guess, we think the powers that be at NBC opted to give the Dick Wolf shows a break expecting many people to tune into the 2024 NFL Draft, which begins at 8 pm ET/5 pm PT on ABC and other channels.

It's also worth mentioning that like many network TV shows this season, Law & Order: SVU only has a limited number of episodes this go-around due to the writers' and actors' strikes last year. Because of the strikes, many shows like the ones in NBC's Thursday night lineup have been taking more routine breaks in releasing new episodes to stretch the seasons and help ensure they wrap in the usual end-of-season TV timeframe between late April and May. 

With all that being said, Law & Order: SVU and the rest of the Law & Order shows are back with new episodes on May 2. Here is a look at what you can expect to see when Law & Order: SVU returns with the episode "Prima Nocta," which also welcomes back Kelli Giddish as Amanda Rollins:

Not for nothing, there are many viewers also glued to their screens hoping that this season will finally see Olivia and Elliot (Christopher Meloni) become an official couple. But it looks like fans won’t get any closer to seeing if this pair unites or what happens with a new case this week as there is no new episode on March 7. 

That’s right, SVU, along with Law & Order season 23 and Law & Order: Organized Crime season 4, are taking a break from airing new episodes tonight. This is due to President Biden giving his State of the Union address beginning at 9 pm ET/PT. However, fans shouldn't worry as Law & Order Thursdays returns with new episodes on Thursday, March 14. 

It's not lost on us that when SVU and company air new episodes next week, they'll be doing so as the season premieres of 9-1-1 season 7, Grey’s Anatomy season 20 and Station 19 season 7 air, which could make for quite the TV battle and cause fans of the dramas to make some "difficult" live-viewing choices. 

The next new episodes for all the Law & Order shows on March 14 will be episode 7, meaning we’re entering the second half of their shortened 13-episode seasons. Now would be a great time to catch up with anything you've missed on SVU or the other Law & Order shows this season over on Peacock.

Specifically focusing on SVU season 25 episode 7, here is a brief synopsis of the next new episode titled "Probability of Doom": 

"When a woman turns her husband in for possessing child pornography, the case is complicated by a sudden death. Benson tries to reconnect with a victim she saved."

Sam Waterson is putting his "Dun Dun" days behind him as he exits the role of DA Jack McCoy in Law & Order season 23 episode 5, an episode aptly titled "Last Dance," airing on Thursday, February 22, at 8 pm ET/PT on NBC. 

Outside the realm of soaps like The Young and the Restless, not many actors in Hollywood can say they've had the privilege of playing a character for 23 seasons, amounting to more than 400 episodes. In the Dick Wolf universe of Law & Order, Waterston's tenure is only rivaled by Ice-T's on Law & Order: SVU, who has been playing Fin for 23 seasons, and only surpassed by the queen of Law & Order, Mariska Hargitay, who has been playing Olivia Benson for 25 seasons on SVU.

When People spoke with 83-year-old Waterston, he stated about his departure, "I knew I was going to leave when I came back, and it was just a matter of when. This was a beautiful way to go I have to say." He of course was referring to the fact that NBC cancelled Law & Order in 2010 and resurrected the series in 2022. 

As of publication, Waterston shared there are no immediate plans for him to reprise the role of DA McCoy once the episode on February 22 airs, so for diehard fans of the character, you'll want to make sure you catch him in his closing-curtain episode. 

Now as far as what viewers can expect to see in his final episode, here is a brief synopsis: 

"When a woman is found murdered in Central Park, evidence points to two frequent park-goers: a street vendor and a tech billionaire. In the face of extreme political pressure, McCoy takes drastic action to make the case."

The overview sounds rather ominous, and working with this limited description we have to wonder if the "drastic action" McCoy takes sees him cross the line and get fired or causes him to quit. We'll just have to watch and see. 

On a final note, for those unbearably saddened by Waterston's exit, we have some good news. Thanks to Peacock, you can watch him as DA McCoy from season 13 to season 23 anytime (currently the platform doesn't have seasons 1-12, but the seasons are available for purchase on Prime Video).

Especially, if you've been patiently waiting to see what happened to Maddie Flynn (Allison Elaine) on SVU, or impatiently waiting for Olivia (Mariska Hargitay) and Elliot (Christopher Meloni) to finally evolve their friendship into something more romantic. Thankfully, Law & Order Thursdays returns with new episodes on February 22.

While NBC doesn't seem to have listed an official reason for the break in airing new episodes, we have a hunch that it may have something to do with CBS premiere week. On February 15, the premiere episodes of Young Sheldon season 7, Ghosts season 3 and So Help Me Todd season 2 all debut. 

With Law & Order season 23 episode 5 serving as Sam Waterston's final episode as District Attorney Jack McCoy, it's possible that network execs want to ensure the character gets as much fanfare as possible in his goodbye to the franchise. McCoy has been a fixture of the franchise since 1994.

With Law & Order: SVU season 25 celebrating the show's silver anniversary, it should come as no surprise series showrunner David Graziano is pulling out all the stops to commemorate such a historic TV run. 

SVU not only extends its reign as the longest-running primetime live-action TV series in US history, but Mariska Hargitay's Olivia Benson becomes the longest-running character on a prime-time drama series. Such feats are deserving of big and captivating storylines, and that may be just what fans are in for as soon as the new season debuts on January 18. 

According to a conversation reported in TV Guide Magazine's 2024 Preview, Wolf Entertainment Executive Vice President Rebecca McGill said of season 25 and the Benson character, "We'll spend time with Capt. Olivia Benson, reflecting on her career and future." 

Graziano followed this up by stating, "This season is 'The Greatest Hits of SVU,' with folks from Benson's past [cases] coming back." These words seem to foreshadow that loyal fans may want to prepare themselves to see shocking returning faces.  

When you pair Graziano's words with a bit of logic, it would make perfect sense going into year 25 if a few of the perpetrators Olivia has helped lock up over the years are released from prison and reappear on the show's canvas. That could mean a plethora of her most notable adversaries could resurface, which could result in some big names in Hollywood stopping by the show. As longtime viewers know, some pretty famous people have played some legendary villains in the Law & Order franchise. 

Should the new season really mark a year of reflection for Olivia, then perhaps the SVU audience should prepare to see those who have significantly impacted her personally and professionally. 

Besides Olivia's infamous stalker William Lewis (Pablo Schreiber), who is dead, Lowell Harris (Johnny Messner) scarred the top cop for a while. He almost sexually assaulted her while she was undercover as an inmate in prison. Could he somehow pop back up on the show canvas, leaving Olivia in deep thought? 

Viewers could also possibly see the return of Darius Parker (Ludacris), Fin's (Ice-T) stepson who committed murder and rape, and single-handedly destroyed the reputation of Olivia, Fin, Elliot (Christopher Meloni) and the rest of the squad room led by Captain Cragen (Dann Florek). Darius' arc on the show is very memorable, so perhaps he'll return having committed a crime he'll actually go to prison for as his cases were previously dismissed. 

On a more personal note for Olivia Benson, maybe this season will see the return of her niece, also named Olivia. The SVU leader hasn't seen her niece in years and with the cop's brother Simon (Michael Weston) dead, a reunion has largely seemed unlikely. However, perhaps an emergency brings the lost family member back into the fold. 

While we have enough show material to speculate for days as to who may be returning, we'll pivot our attention to who we know is appearing in season 25. For example, Kelli Giddish is back as Amanda Rollins in the SVU season 25 premiere episode. Additionally, Kevin Kane's Detective Terry Bruno is also slated to appear. As far as how often both of them will be seen in the new episodes, McGill says that's "on a case-by-case basis."

We’ll just have to stay tuned to see who will be featured in Law & Order: SVU season 25.

In some casting news, Jeffrey Donovan is exiting the role of Detective Frank Cosgrove. But don't worry fans, a new NYPD detective is arriving in the squad room played by actor Reid Scott (Marvelous Miss Maisel).

How to watch Law & Order season 23 

New episodes of Law & Order air live exclusively on NBC. For those that don’t have traditional cable/satellite television, you still have the opportunity to watch episodes live using live TV streaming services such as FuboTV, Hulu with Live TV, Sling TV and YouTube TV. The latest episodes become available to stream the next day on Peacock. 

As of now, we don’t have official word as to when the new episodes premiere in the UK. Once we find out that information, we’ll pass along the update. 

NBC has announced its fall 2023-2023 TV schedule and perhaps one of the biggest things in it is that Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler are splitting up. But fans can breath a sigh of relief, we don't mean in terms of their will-they-won't-they romance, but instead that Law & Order: SVU and Law & Order: Organized Crime aren't going to share Thursday nights, at least for a while.

The network pushed Organized Crime to midseason, delaying its usual fall premiere as it transitions to a new showrunner according to Deadline. That means Law & Order Thursdays is losing one-third of its membership temporarily, with Organized Crime not following SVU as part of the fall schedule. So what show will fill in during the 10 pm slot on Thursdays? The new drama Found. 

Found is from All American executive producer Nkechi Okoro Carroll and follows public relations specialist Gabi Mosley (Shanola Hampton) as she and her crisis management team attempt to bring awareness to the thousands of people missing in the US who are often overlooked. Gabi has a special connection with this mission having once been a missing person who was forgotten. As she works on each case, she also finds herself trying to hide a very "chilling" secret. 

NBC also announced that Night Court returns in the fall for its second season. This is different from season 1, which had a midseason premiere in January 2023. Night Court will still air on Tuesdays at 8 pm ET/PT, but it will be followed by the new Jon Cryer comedy Extended Family at 8:30 pm ET/PT, The Voice at 9 pm ET/PT and Quantum Leap at 10 pm ET/PT. 

For La Brea fans wondering where this Tuesday night schedule leaves the show, NBC has decided to give it a midseason release.

The One Chicago franchise — including Chicago Med, Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D. — and the trio of shows in the long-running Law & Order universe — Law & Order, Law & Order: SVU and Law & Order: Organized Crime — will return in fall 2023. All six Dick Wolf-produced series have been renewed by NBC, signaling the network's dedication to the cast and crew, the stories and the fans. 

"I'm pleased to continue my four-decade relationship with Universal Television and NBC," Wolf said in a statement. "All six shows being picked up again is the ultimate accolade to our incredible casts, producers and writers. I'd also like to thank our loyal fans who have kept our NBC shows on the air for what will be a cumulative 84 seasons."

It wasn't a hard decision to grant additional seasons to these shows. The One Chicago shows rank in the top 10 each week for the coveted 18-49 demo as well as total viewers while Law & Order: SVU and Law & Order: Organized Crime rank among broadcast TV's top 10 dramas in the same 18-49 demographic. 

All three One Chicago shows have amassed over 50 million viewers across NBC and Peacock this season, and the three Law & Order series are close behind them. This is particularly impressive given that Law & Order is currently in its 22nd season while SVU is celebrating its 24th season. That kind of longevity is unusual in today's TV landscape when so many shows don't last beyond a single season. It helps that so many of the actors have returned year after year, or have returned after taking time off, to continue their characters' stories.

Lisa Katz, president of Scripted Programming for NBCUniversal and Streaming, expressed excitement and gratitude to Wolf, Wolf's team and the fans. "We understand the emotional connection our audience has with these characters and we can't wait to bring more of their stories to the forefront next season," she said. "A huge thank you to Dick and his amazing team who are the masters of producing incredibly compelling television week after week."

New episodes of the One Chicago shows air Wednesdays while all three Law & Order shows air on Thursdays on NBC. All of the shows are available to stream the following day on Peacock.  

Not many shows have the distinct honor of saying they were able to take more than a decade-long hiatus from television and then be welcomed back with open arms by fans. The Dick Wolf classic Law & Order entered this elite class at the top of 2022 when it debuted season 21 on NBC. 

With viewers still intrigued by the likes of Sam Waterston’s Jack McCoy and Cameron Manheim’s Kate Dixon, while entertained by newcomers Jeffrey Donovan, Hugh Dancy and Odelya Halevi, new life was breathed into the original Law & Order franchise.

When is the next episode of Law & Order season 22?

Law & Order fans, the series is back with the final episode of the season. 

The episode titled "Open Wounds" airs on Thursday, May 18, at 8 pm ET/PT on NBC. Here's a synopsis of what's to come: 

"A senator is gunned down at his daughter's wedding; McCoy pushes for a severe sentence and squares up against a formidable DA -- his own daughter; Price aims to stay neutral but can't help but empathize with the defendant over a shared trauma."

Law & Order season 22 cast 

As previously mentioned, Sam Waterston is reprising his role as District Attorney Jack McCoy. Waterston is now the most tenured member of the cast. He’s also a well-respected actor in Hollywood having starred in projects like Grace and Frankie as Sol Bergstein, The Newsroom as Charlie Skinner and Serial Mom as the dad. 

Joining Waterston is the other Law & Order veteran, Camryn Manheim. Manheim also has an impressive resume, having been featured as Ellenor in The Practice, Lieutenant Cosgrove in Stumptown and Diane Claypool in Person of Interest. This is a short list of her acting roles, but most certainly not an exhaustive one. 

Rounding out the main cast for season 22 are Jeffrey Donovan (Burn Notice, Fargo), Hugh Dancy (The Good Fight, Downton Abbey: A New Era) and Odelya Halevi (Good Trouble, Black Adam). 

With the early announcement that Anthony Anderson is not reprising his role as Kevin Bernard in the new season, there was a bit of speculation as to who would be his new partner. Well, according to Deadline, Mehcad Brooks (Mortal Kombat, A Fall from Grace) is that person. He'll be featured as Detective Jalen Shaw. 

Also, Grimm star Claire Coffee will be on hand as an attorney in the new season, according to TV Line. The length of her stint on the show hasn’t yet been revealed, so we can’t say if she’ll be around for a while or in a more limited capacity.  

Law & Order season 22 plot 

At Law & Order’s core, it is a crime procedural series. Weekly episodes are about the new crimes that the detectives try to solve and the suspected criminals the district attorney’s office tries to prosecute. So viewers can expect to see some thought-provoking cases with the occasional unexpected ending. 

Additionally, a lot of attention will be placed on Frank Cosgrove as he attempts to adjust to his new partner.

For the first time ever in "dun dun" history, there was a crossover event between Law & Order, Law & Order: SVU and Law & Order: Organized Crime. While fans are used to seeing the SVU and Organized Crime units tag-team on a case, and even SVU work a case with the Law & Order police squad, they aren’t used to seeing all three teams work together. It seems only fitting that the crossover event launched the new season for each series. Take a look at the NBC trailer below.  

How to watch Law & Order season 22

Are you someone that prefers to watch shows in your own time? No problem. New episodes will become available to stream on Peacock the day after they air live, though only if you're a Peacock Premium subscriber.  

We aren’t sure when UK fans will be able to watch the new season as that information has not been announced. However, once a release date is made available, we’ll be sure to share that information.  

On September 20, 1999, Law & Order: SVU premiered on NBC, debuting the illustrious partnership of Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni). For over two decades, the chemistry between these two has been undeniable and yet the pair have never been involved romantically, admittedly for a number of good reasons. Elliot after all was married with kids. Then there’s the fact that he ran off to Italy for a decade. 

After Elliot finally returned to the Law & Order universe and branched out into Organized Crime and Kathy Stabler (Isabel Boyer Gillies) suffered an untimely death, fans assumed it would only be a matter of time before #Stenson (or #Bensler, if you prefer) finally became a thing. That the NYPD cops would confess their love for one another and be the super couple viewers had always imagined. Unfortunately, that hasn’t happened yet.

In an Organized Crime episode titled "Whipping Post" that aired on November 17, the super couple dream came a little closer to being a reality when a hungover Elliot started having a conversation with a hungover Pearl Serrano (Camilla Belle), his former work colleague who clearly has romantic feelings for him. 

Elliot tries to see what she remembers from the night before. Pearl claims to remember the important parts, "except her name." A caught-off-guard Elliot asks, "Whose name?" That's when Pearl drops the bombshell: "You said there was a woman you were in love with." 

Almost immediately, fans took to Twitter to practically squeal with glee as they were certain the woman in question is Olivia. Although, Elliot himself never actually mentions her name or even confesses to saying that he was in love. He just plays coy. 

Seeing his reaction, Pearl informs him she booked a flight to leave New York and asks, "No reason for me to stay, is there?" His silence was all the answer she needed to know that he had someone else on his mind. 

We're not sure what it will take for Elliot to make his drunken confession a sober one and tell Olivia herself, but the Law & Order: SVU and Organized Crime audiences hope whatever it is, it happens soon.

New episodes of Law & Order: SVU and Law & Order: Organized Crime continue to air on Thursdays on NBC. Episodes become available the next day on Peacock. 

Dick Wolf and the crown jewel of his empire, the Law & Order franchise, made history on Thursday night, premiering the first ever three-series Law & Order crossover event. For three hours, viewers stayed glued to their screens as the detectives and lawyers from the OG series, SVU and Organized Crime put their heads together to battle against a Russian diplomat of sorts and his partner as they terrorized the city of New York with explosives and an underage prostitution ring. 

There were a few moments during the special event that definitely caused fans to be on pins and needles, as they watched certain police officers come face to face with danger. For example, when new kid on the block Detective Shaw (Mehcad Brooks) wanted to deactivate the bomb found in the parking garage with under four minutes to do so, viewers thought he would foolishly meet his demise if he tried. However, even as he developed the good sense to run, he and Detective Cosgrove (Jeffrey Donovan) were hit by the debris from the explosion. Both wound up surviving with minimal injuries. 

When incidents like those passed and the criminals were tucked away in lockup, it seemed like the risk factor for all the detectives had subsided. But then came the surprise of the night.

SVU’s Detective Rollins (Kelli Giddish) was sent to supervise the pickup of the 15-year-old witness in the case. Before the two made it safely to the car, they were ambushed by several men dressed in black and a gunfight ensued. Rollins, the witness and the other officers on the scene ducked behind a car for cover. Unfortunately, the more shots that were fired the more frightened the victim became and the teenage girl made the impromptu decision to run. As Rollins went after her, the detective was shot several times in the abdomen.  

Did Amanda Rollins die in the Law & Order crossover event?

The short answer is we don’t know. 

Apparently, she lost a lot of blood but did manage to survive surgery. Her doctors were hoping for the best according to Captain Benson (Mariska Hargitay). The last image viewers see of Rollins, is her lying unconscious in a hospital bed. 

Now what makes Rollins’ condition particularly interesting is the fact that her portrayer, Kelli Giddish, confirmed to People not too long ago that this is her last season on SVU. Given the plans on how her character would depart from the show and when that would happen were never announced, could the beloved onscreen police officer be meeting her end this early into season 24?

The audience will have to keep watching Law & Order: SVU to see what happens.

For several weeks now, there have been rumblings of a potential Law & Order crossover event that would encompass the original cornerstone of the franchise, as well as Law & Order: SVU and Law & Order: Organized Crime. Even Christopher Meloni who plays Elliot Stabler in Organized Crime seemed to tease fans of the possibility with an Instagram post in which he was on set with actors from all three series.  

Well finally, the creator of the Law & Order universe Dick Wolf and the powers that be at NBC have officially released a promo video announcing that Thursday, September 22, will mark not only the season premieres for each of the respective shows, but also the first time in history that all three squads will join forces together in a Law & Order crossover event. Take a look at the video announcement below.  

Watching the 44-second clip, we tried our best to ascertain what viewers can expect to see in September. Unfortunately, there wasn’t much to grab onto in terms of a potential storyline. However, according to Deadline, the synopsis of the crossover episodes is as follows: 

"As the telecast begins, a mysterious young girl is shot in cold blood and Det. Frank Cosgrove (Jeffrey Donovan) teams up with Det. Jalen Shaw (Mehcad Brooks) to track down her killer. Capt. Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and Det. Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni) are called in to help when they realize they have more than a typical homicide case on their hands. After uncovering key evidence, Jack McCoy (Sam Waterston) and ADA Nolan Price (Hugh Dancy) seek justice against an international crime ring, but complications threaten the outcome of their case."

This certainly sounds like September 22, will consist of three hours of plot twists, high-stakes moments and drama. Commenting on the historic crossover, Dick Wolf released a statement that read: 

"Nothing demonstrates the power of the Law & Order brand more than an ambitious three-hour event with a story that is truly ripped from the headlines that starts on Organized Crime, then migrates to SVU and finally the trial on Law & Order."

black-ish final season

Why you should watch: the Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis-Ross-led black-ish is giving its curtain call. The long-running sitcom set out to tell the story of a black family working to establish a sense of cultural identity in a predominantly white, upper-middle-class neighborhood. It has done so with many memorable episodes that dealt with tough but important issues. Willing to bet there will be a few more as they close out this eighth season.

Euphoria season 2

When to watch: season has concluded
Where to watch: HBO; streaming on HBO Max anytime. Airing on Sky and Now in the UK
Why you should watch: the teen drama starring Zendaya (who won an Emmy for her performance), was an instant hit when its first season premiered in 2019, depicting the life for a group of high schoolers as they grapple with drugs, sex and violence.  Now, after a long wait, fans can finally pick back up with the characters from East Highland with season 2.

This Is Us final season

When to watch: the This Is Us series finale has aired.
Where to watch: Peacock or Hulu on-demand. Streaming on Prime Video and Disney Plus in the UK
Why you should watch: This Is Us, with its fantastic ensemble and tear-inducing moments, is coming to an end. Having told the story of the Pearson family in the past and present, This Is Us has been known to big audiences to tears (in a good way). Have the tissue box handy as the final episodes are sure to bring out all the feels.

How I Met Your Father

When to watch: All episodes are out in the US and UK.
Where to watch: Hulu in the US; Disney Plus in the UK.
Why you should watch: How I Met Your Mother was a beloved sitcom (despite fans not being overly pleased with the ending) from the late 2000s and early 2010s. How I Met Your Father looks to recapture that magic for a new audience with new characters but the same basic premise, this time telling the story of Sophie (Hilary Duff) and her close-knit group of friends as they figure out their personal and love lives in New York City.

Ozark final season

Why you should watch: the Byrde family is back for one more season (if broken in to two parts). Ozark is about a financial advisor who is forced to move his family to the Missouri Ozarks to launder money for a drug bossAll the main cast of the Emmy-winning series — Jason Bateman, Laura Linney, Julia Garner — is back, and the stakes are higher than ever and not everyone may make it out alive.

The Gilded Age

When to watch: season has concluded
Where to watch: HBO; streaming on HBO Max. On Sky and Now in the UK
Why you should watch: Julian Fellowes, the creator of Downton Abbey, hopes to find similar success with this series set in late 19th century New York City and following as a young woman from a conservative family who attempts to infiltrate the world of a wealthy family. The Gilded Age stars the fantastic trio of Cynthia Nixon, Christine Baranski and Audra McDonald.

The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window

When to watch: premiered January 28
Where to watch: Netflix
Why you should watch: Kristen Bell helps send up the popular trend of mystery thrillers like The Girl on the Train and The Woman in the Window in this comedy miniseries. When a handsome neighbor moves in across the street, Anna a heartbroken, for whom, every day is the same, starts to see a light at the end of the tunnel. That is until she witnesses a gruesome murder. Or did she? This will be Bell’s most high profile TV role since The Good Place.

The Afterparty

Where to watch: Apple TV Plus
Why you should watch: This comedy crime story revisits the scene of the crime at a high school reunion, with from different characters’ perspectives used to reexamine the case. Those characters are played by the likes of Tiffany Haddish, Dave Franco, Ilana Glazer, Sam Richardson, Zoë Chao, Ike Barinholtz, Ben Schwartz and Jamie Demetriou.

Where to watch: Hulu; Disney Plus in the UK
Why you should watch: while the hook into the Hulu miniseries Pam & Tommy is the story about how the infamous Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee sex tape was shared to the public, the series will look at the famous couple’s whole relationship. Lily James and Sebastian Stan star.

Suspicion

When to watch: all episodes are now available
Where to watch: Apple TV Plus
Why you should watch: Apple’s The Afterparty looks at the comedic side of the crime thriller, Suspicion is more of the traditional drama, following an American businesswoman (Uma Thurman) trying to find her kidnapped son and whose target falls on four seemingly ordinary British citizens. This could be the perfect kind of story to get swept up in when bundled inside this winter.

Inventing Anna

When to watch: all episodes are now available
Where to watch: Netflix
Why you should watch: Shonda Rhimes is one of the most prolific producers for TV right now, but Inventing Anna, based on the true story of a fake heiress that stole from New York’s elite, will be the first show she has written since Scandal premiered. Any fans of the Queen of TV should have this one marked on their calendar. Julia Garner and Anna Chlumsky star.

Bel-Air

When to watch: all episodes of season 1 are now available.
Where to watch: Peacock. Airing on Sky and Now in the UK
Why you should watch: Bel-Air is not just a reboot of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air but an entire reimagining, as the story of the ‘90s sitcom is transformed into a modern-day drama, and the trailer certainly makes it look like they pulled the genre switch off. In case you need a reminder, Bel-Air tells the story of a Philadelphia kid who moves to the wealthy California neighborhood Bel-Air with his cousins after he gets into a brush with a gang. Newcomer Jabari Banks takes over Will Smith's role, who is also on board as an executive producer.

Law & Order

Why you should watch: after more than 11 years off the air, the original Law & Order is returning to NBC, with original series stars Sam Waterston and Anthony Anderson reprising their roles alongside some new cast members. The legendary procedural will once again depict the police and the prosecutors that deal with crime in New York City, with story often based on real events. With SVU and Organized Crime, Thursday will be Law & Order night on NBC.

Vikings: Valhalla

When to watch: All episodes are now available
Where to watch: Netflix
Why you should watch: a sequel series to the popular History Channel show Vikings, Vikings: Valhalla will take place 100 years later and depict the adventures of Leif Erikson, Freydis, Harald Hardrada and the Norman King William the Conqueror. The original Vikings was an epic, but just imagine how much bigger Vikings: Valhalla will be with Netflix footing the bill. The show was created by Die Hard and The Fugitive writer Jeb Stuart.

Peaky Blinders final season

When to watch: all episodes are now available in the US and UK
Where to watch: BBC/Netflix
Why you should watch: Peaky Blinders season 5 left off on a cliffhanger that has been driving fans of the series crazy for more than two years, but answers are finally coming as the early 20th century crime drama about the Shelby family heads into its final season. Created by Steven Knight, Peaky Blinders stars Cillian Murphy, Paul Anderson, the late Helen McCrory, Finn Cole, Natahsa O'Keefe, Sophie Rundle and Tom Hardy.

The Dropout

When to watch: All episodes are now available
Where to watch: Hulu in US, Disney Plus in UK
Why you should watch: Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes was found guilty of four federal offenses recently, and now you can learn more about her story with the Hulu original series The Dropout starring Amanda Seyfried. The series will chronicle Holmes' career as she drops out of college and tries to start a technology company to revolutionize the healthcare industry.

The Thing About Pam

When to watch: all episodes are now available
Where to watch: Peacock and Hulu on-demand
Why you should watch: two-time Oscar-winner Renée Zellweger stars in this broadcast drama series about the true 2011 murder case of Betsy Faria. The true story saw Ross Faria convicted of his wife Betsy's brutal murder, even though he insisted he did not kill her. The truth, however, ultimately lines with a woman named Pam Hupp (Zellweger). The Thing About Pam is the broadcast TV debut for Zellweger.

Atlanta season 3

When to watch: season 3 has concluded
Where to watch: FX and Hulu in US; Disney Plus in UK
Why you should watch: Atlanta is one of the most critically-acclaimed shows since it debuted in 2016, which has made the nearly four-year wait since its season 2 finale that much harder for fans. But the wait is finally over as Atlanta season 3 is coming and will find Earn, Paper Boi, Darius and Van in Europe.

Halo

When to watch: season 1 has concluded
Where to watch: Paramount Plus
Why you should watch: the popular video games series is getting the TV treatment in what should be a massive space adventure, as viewers will be transported to the distant future where humanity is fighting off an alien invasion. Pablo Schreiber, Natascha McElhone, Yerin Ah and Bookem Woodbine headline the cast, while fans of video game are sure to be thrilled that Jen Taylor is reprising the voice of Cortana from the games.

Bridgerton season 2

Why you should watch: Bridgerton set the TV world on fire when it debuted in the winter of 2020, showcasing the wealth, lust and betrayal of the Bridgerton family in Regency-era England. Though season 1 star Regé-Jean Page will not be in this new season, anticipation is palpable for the drama to pick up once again and introduces a new character, Kate Sharma, played by Simone Ashley. Season 1 stars Phoebe Dynevor and Jonathan Bailey are set to return.

Moon Knight

Why you should watch: the Marvel series on Disney Plus have been a whole lot of fun as they expand the Marvel universe in exciting ways. In Moon Knight, we get introduced to a brand new hero who will be played by Oscar Isaac. The show is about a former US marine who is given the powers of an Egyptian moon god, but he soon realizes this powers are both a gift and a curse. Ethan Hawke also stars. 

Julia

When to watch: season 1 has concluded
Where to watch: HBO Max; Sky Atlantic and Now TV in the UK
Why you should watch: Julia Childs is one of the most famous cooking personalities ever, and her life’s story and how she helped introduce French cooking to America is the subject of this new HBO Max original series. Why you should watch: Ewan McGregor reprises his role of Obi-Wan Kenobi in this new Star Wars original series that takes place between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, when the Jedi master exiled himself to Tatooine. The Time Traveler's Wife

Why you should watch: The Time Traveler’s Wife was previously made into a movie in 2009, but it didn’t receive the warmest of receptions. This TV adaptation will give fans of Audrey Niffenegger’s novel another chance to see the love story between a woman and a man who has a genetic disorder that causes him to time travel play out. Rose Leslie and Theo James are playing the central couple this time.

Why you should watch: another entry into Disney Plus’ Marvel originals is Ms. Marvel, which will introduce the titular hero, Marvel’s first Muslim superhero, played by newcomer Iman Vellani. This will be the first appearance of the polymorphus superhero, but the show could very well lead into The Marvels, the Captain Marvel sequel, in which Vellani's character is set to appear.

Queer as Folk

Why you should watch: Based on the UK series of the same name from 1999, this is the second US adaptation of Queer as Folk, which will focus on a group of club-going friends who find support in the gay community following a tragedy. This new series stars Devin Way, Fin Argusand, Jesse James Keitel, with Juliette Lewis, Kim Cattrall and Ed Begley Jr. as recurring characters.

Why you should watch: Based on Neil Gaiman’s popular DC Comics character, The Sandman has been in development for a long time but is finally making its way to fans, with Tom Sturridge leading an impressive cast that includes David Thewlis, Patton Oswalt, Gwendoline Christie and Stephen Fry. The story centers on Dream, the personification of dreams, as he escapes a decades long imprisonment and sets out to reclaim his lost equipment.

House of the Dragon

Why you should watch: the first Game of Thrones spinoff will look to remind fans what they loved about the original epic series (George R.R. Martin has given his early vote of confidence). The series takes place a few hundred years before the events of Game of Thrones and puts the Targaryen front and center. Matt Smith, Paddy Considine and Olivia Cooke headline the new series.

She-Hulk

Why you should watch: Mark Ruffalo won’t be the only one who gets angry in the MCU anymore — Tatiana Maslany joins the expanded universe as Jennifer Walters, also known as She-Hulk. Interview with the Vampire

Why you should watch: Based on Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles series (previously a movie starring Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise and Kirsten Dunst), Interview with the Vampire sees vampire Louis de Pointe du Lac tell his life story on how he became a vampire. Game of Thrones star Jacob Anderson will star as Louis, while Sam Reid (Belle, The Newsreader) will star as his vampire companion Lestat.

Monarch

Why you should watch: Susan Sarandon and Anna Friel lead the cast for this country music drama that is reminiscent of another Fox hit series, the long-running Empire. Monarch tells the story of the Romans family, who have created a country music dynasty. But when their reign is put in jeopardy, who will step up to protect the family? Originally set for a Jan. 30 premiere, Monarch has been pushed to the fall because of COVID-related production delays.

Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story

Why you should watch: For whatever reason, we as a viewing culture are obsessed with true crime stories and this year we’ll be getting one of the biggest of them all in the story of Jeffrey Dahmer. Ryan Murphy (Glee, American Crime Story) is behind the series, with Evan Peters (Mare of Easttown, WandaVision) on board as Dahmer.

The White House Plumbers

The Witcher: Blood Origin

Why you should watch: The Witcher has proven to be a big hit for Netflix, and now the streamer is expanding the world of the show. The prequel series, which is being written by The Witcher scribe Declan De Bara, will tell the origins of the very first witcher and stars Michelle Yeoh.

When is the Law & Order: Organized Crime season 2 finale? 

The Law & Order: Organized Crime season 2 finale airs on Thursday, May 19.  In some fantastic news for fans, the show has been renewed for season 3. 

What is the plot of Law & Order: Organized Crime?

Law & Order: Organized Crime follows the detectives of the Organized Crime Control Bureau in New York City as they work to dismantle the city’s most vicious and violent illegal enterprises. This includes Det. Elliot Stabler, who originally was one of the lead characters on Law & Order: SVU.

The series finds Det. Stabler returning to the NYPD after a decade away and rebuilding his life following a devastating personal loss. We see Stabler discussing his personal well being with a therapist during the season.

The first season mostly consisted of Stabler’s pursuit of gangster Richard Wheatley. SPOILER ALERT, at the end of season one Wheatley nearly dies as his son put a hit out on him, but ultimately was handed over to authorities. However, Olivia Benson (Stabler’s partner on SVU) shows up and when Wheatley learns who she is, he has a menacing grimace on his face.

Who is in the Law & Order: Organized Crime cast?

Leading Law & Order: Organized Crime is Christopher Meloni as Det. Elliot Stabler. Meloni previously starred alongside Mariska Hargitay in Law & Order: SVU, but left after season 12. He’s now back in the famous role but getting to headline his own show, though there are the occasional appearances from Hargitay’s Benson on Organized Crime and his Stabler on SVU.

Joining Meloni as the main cast members of Organized Crime are Dylan McDermott as Richard Wheatley, Danielle Moné Truitt as Sgt. Ayanna Bell, Ainsley Seiger as Jet Slootmaekers and Tamara Taylor as Angela Wheatley.

What is the plot of Law & Order: SVU?

The SVU of the title stands for Special Victims Unit, with the show following a specially trained squad of detectives in the NYPD who investigate sexually related crimes.

Law & Order: SVU has typically been episodic, essentially adopting a case-of-the-week format that makes it easy for viewers to jump in at just about any time and feel like they haven’t missed too much in terms of character development or what have you.

That being said, season 22’s finale introduced a case that will continue into season 23. In the season 22 finale, the SVU team began working on a sex-for-housing case that lead them to a powerful congressman. As Benson and her team confront the politician, danger lurks for them the deeper they go. 

A teaser for the Law & Order: SVU premiere previews a major conspiracy and Benson getting driven off the road. It ends with Christopher Meloni’s Stabler (formerly of SVU and now on Law & Order: Organized Crime) making an appearance.

Who is in the Law & Order: SVU cast?

There’s been a good bit of turnover in series regulars and plenty of guest stars throughout Law & Order: SVU’s run, but a constant has been Mariska Hargitay as Olivia Benson. For the show’s first 12 seasons Hargitay co-starred with Meloni as their Benson and Stabler were partners, but since Meloni’s exit its been Hargitay as the unquestioned star of the series.

Just like that, it's time for the Law & Order season finale. The series had a good run in its triumphant return to television. For SVU fans, you’ll want to tune in for the finale of the OG’s season as Mariska Hargitay guest stars as Captain Olivia Benson. 

The next episode titled "Black and Blue" airs Thursday, May 19, at 8 pm ET/PT on NBC. Here is a synopsis of the episode:

"The murder of an off-duty NYPD detective threatens to tear the city apart. Cosgrove mourns the loss of a friend and asks Capt. Benson for help solving the case. McCoy and Price disagree on how to prosecute the culprit."

When is the Law & Order season 21 finale?

The Law & Order season 21 finale airs on Thursday, May 19.  In some exciting news, the series has been renewed for an additional season.

Even after all that time away, Law & Order isn’t changing up its format. The show continues its bifurcated format that was used for its original run and keeps the original premise of following the police who investigate crime and the district attorneys who prosecute the offenders. 

It should also be noted that this is not a reboot, but is considered a continuation of  Law & Order’s original run, which is why the new season is considered season 21 and a number of the show’s original cast members are making a return.

Fans are certainly happy to see a number of familiar faces as part of the Law & Order cast, plus some new ones as well. Sam Waterston returns as District Attorney Jack McCoy (Waterston’s 17th season on the show) and Anthony Anderson reprises his role as Detective Kevin Bernard. Another returning cast member is Camryn Manheim as Lieutenant Kate Dixon.

Waterston, Anderson and Manheim welcome a handful of new members to the Law & Order team. New cast members include Jeffrey Donovan (Burn Notice) as an NYPD detective, Hugh Dancy (Hannibal) as an assistant district attorney and Odelya Halevi (Good Trouble) as Assistant District Attorney Samantha Maroun.

Was Law & Order renewed for another season?

In some great news for Law & Order fans, according to Variety, the series has officially been renewed for season 23. While we don't know much about the upcoming season, we do know some casting news thanks to Deadline. The site reports that Anthony Anderson is departing from his role as Detective Kevin Bernard on the series while Sam Waterston has agreed to stay on for another season as District Attorney Jack McCoy. 

After another Law & Order Thursday where fans were reminded of Britney Spears’ conservatorship issues on Law & Order, were initially confused if there were one villain or two on SVU and were taken on another action-packed ride with Stabler (Christopher Meloni) on Organized Crime, one thing really stuck out by the end of the night. Donald Cragen is coming back. 

That’s right, Donald Cragen (Dann Florek) is returning to the Law & Order family. In a preview for the next Organized Crime episode entitled "Can’t Knock the Hustle," viewers were teased with the former police captain’s surprise re-emergence. This is exciting news as longtime fans of SVU know Florek and Meloni haven’t shared a screen together since the latter’s departure from the series after season 12.  

While we’ll just have to watch and see if Cragen’s stint on Organized Crime will just be for the one episode or longer, here is the synopsis for "Can’t Knock the Hustle": 

"When Donnelly's (Denis Leary) version of events don't match up to what Stabler remembers about his father's heroic rescue on the job, Stabler turns to his friend and mentor Donald Cragen for help sorting out the truths from the lies."

Let’s hope Cragen will be around longer than he was with Olivia (Mariska Hargitay) during SVU’s 500th episode back in October 2021.  

Now we hate to be the bearer of bad news, but fans will have to wait until April 7 to see how this return unfolds, as all Law & Order shows are taking a brief hiatus. But as the old adage goes, good things come to those who wait. 

For those a little impatient or needing to fill their time during this break, we recommend catching up with old episodes of SVU available on Hulu and Peacock. Refresh your memory as to the dynamic between Cragen and Stabler.

Sam Waterston as D.A. Jack McCoy

For many, Law & Order just wouldn’t be right without Sam Waterston’s Jack McCoy. Waterston made his debut on the series in 1994, appearing in 368 episodes between then and 2010, the second-most of any Law & Order actor ever, behind only S. Epatha Merkerson’s 391 episodes, all but one of which (she appeared as a guest star) was as Lieutenant Anita Van Buren. Waterston was also nominated three times for an Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series Emmy during the show’s original run.

Speaking with TV Line, even though it had been more than 11 years since Law & Order ended its original run, Waterston said he “never put [Law & Order] in the past,” but he did wonder “could I go home again?” He told TV Line that stepping back on sets that looked very much familiar to the old ones was helpful.

The return of Waterston definitely helps make this reignited Law & Order feel like home for fans and it should be interesting to see how McCoy interacts with the rookies on the show.

Anthony Anderson as Detective Kevin Bernard

Another Law & Order alum coming back for the continuation is Anthony Anderson, who will once again play the role of Detective Kevin Bernard. Anderson appeared on two seasons of Law & Order before the show stopped in 2010, but his star has only grown since then as one of the main characters on the sitcom black-ish, which wraps up its final season this year. As What to Watch sister site Cinemablend previously reported, Anderson described the idea of not returning to the show as “foolish.”

During an interview with E! at the red carpet premiere for the new season of Law & Order, Anderson talked about ways he tried to lighten the mood on set of the crime drama. He joked about hazing his new co-star and on-screen partner Jeffrey Donovan, but emphasized their great relationship. “What Jeffrey and I are doing, we’re making Law & Order: The Comedy, and we don’t tell any of the directors that come in, so they have to reel us in.” 

Jeffrey Donovan as Detective Frank Cosgrove

Speaking of Jeffrey Donovan, he joins Law & Order as one of the new principal cast members. Donovan is best known for roles like Michael Westen on Burn Notice, starring in season 2 of Fargo and roles in movies like Changeling, Sicario and Wrath of Man. However, he is not a complete newcomer in the world of Law & Order.

Donovan actually appeared as a guest star in two episodes of Law & Order, first in 1995 and then again in 2007 (playing different roles). But this is clearly a different level, as the actor told E! that he is “geeking out that I’m on Law & Order” and boasting that he has probably seen all previous season episodes “at least once.”

As far as his character, Donovan described Detective Frank Cosgrove as an Irish Catholic from the Bronx, someone who is New York through and through, who speaks his mind and doesn’t have a filter, which can get him into trouble.

Camryn Manheim as Lieutenant Kate Dixon

Camryn Manheim, who will star as Lieutenant Kate Dixon in Law & Order season 21, also had experience as a guest star on the crime drama. She appeared on the show three times in 1991, 1993 and 1994 as three different characters; in fact, her first TV credit came in that 1991 episode. She spoke about her experience with the show to E! during the show’s recent premiere.

“I was just a snot-nosed kid out of graduate school, and like every New York actor wanted to add Law & Order to my resume and waited and waited and finally I got cast. I’ve played three separate characters prior to this one, so it’s a big full circle moment for me to come back as Lieutenant Dixon.”

Manheim is someone who is very familiar with the police/legal crime drama, as she has starred throughout her career in shows like The Practice, Stumptown and Ghost Whisperer.

Odelya Halevi as ADA Samantha Maroun

Someone wholly new to the Law & Order franchise is Odelya Halevi, who will play Assistant District Attorney Samantha Maround in the continuation. This is Halevi’s biggest TV role to date, though she has previously appeared on multiple episodes of Good Trouble and Good Girls Revolt, as well as some guest appearances on shows like Why Women Kill, MacGyver and NCIS.

Law & Order is just part of the big year for Halevi, who also has a role in the upcoming big screen DC comic book adaptation Black Adam alongside Dwayne Johnson.

Hugh Dancy as EADA Nolan Price

Hugh Dancy previously solved crimes alongside Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen) in NBC’s Hannibal, but he may be glad to no longer have to deal with the famous cannibal. Instead, he’ll be spending most of his time in the courtroom as the show’s lead prosecutor, Executive Assistant District Attorney Nolan Price.

Dancy is a British actor whose credits, in addition to Hannibal, include The Good Fight, Homeland, The Path, The Big C, the indie film Martha Marcy May Marlene and more.

Being a Brit, Law & Order wasn’t a thing for Dancy growing up, though he was sure to catch up. “When I came here [America] about 15 years ago, I kind of binge watched Law & Order. So it became my “welcome to America” package, if you like,” the actor told E! at the Law & Order premiere. 

While the Law & Order franchise has been running on NBC consistently for more than 30 years — currently with Law & Order: SVU and Law & Order: Organized Crime — the original is making a comeback, as NBC has announced that it is moving forward with a revival of plain and simple Law & Order for what would be the show’s 21st season.

Law & Order was created by Dick Wolf and premiered on NBC in 1990. It ran for 20 seasons and 456 episodes, originally ending in 2010. It was nominated for more than 50 Emmys throughout its run, including winning Outstanding Drama Series in 1997. Among the original members of the Law & Order cast were Jerry Orbach, Jesse L. Martin, Sam Waterston, S. Epatha Merkerson, Leslie Hendrix, Dennis Farina, Steven Hill, Fred Thompson, Benjamin Bratt, Carolyn McCormick, Richard Brooks and Dann Florek.

Wolf will once again be the executive producer and showrunner for Law & Order season 21, along with Arthur Forney and Peter Jankowski. The series will keep its classic format of bifurcated episodes that examine the police who investigate crime and the district attorneys who prosecute the offenders.

“There are few things in life that are literally dreams come true,” said Wolf. “This is mine.”

“Law & Order is quite simply one of the most iconic shows in television history, and the idea of continuing its legacy and partnering with Dick on an all-new season is nothing short of exhilarating” said Susan Rovner, chairman, Entertainment Content, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, “This is great news for NBC as well as TV fans everywhere.”

It has been an interesting last few months for the Law & Order franchise. Heading into the fall 2021 TV season, it was thought that viewers would be getting a brand new Law & Order spinoff, Law & Order: For the Defense, that would join SVU and Organized Crime on NBC’s Thursday night lineup. However, the wheels never truly got rolling on For the Defense, and it was shut down. While we await the official word on where the Law & Order revival will fit in NBC’s lineup, it’s not that difficult to piece together that it will find a home alongside its two popular spinoffs. 

UPDATE 7/15:  Law & Order: For the Defense will not have its day in court. NBC and Dick Wolf have mutually agreed to not go forward with the latest spinoff in the Law & Order franchise, which had been given a straight-to-series order by the network. The Hollywood Reporter has a full report. 

Law & Order is getting another spinoff, with NBC giving a straight-to-series order for Law & Order: For the Defense. This new series will, as always, be overseen by Law & Order creator Dick Wolf, but it will be Carol Mendelsohn, who previously wrote for CSI, that will serve as the series’ showrunner.

The Law & Order franchise has been on TV for more than 30 years, with Wolf launching the original series on NBC in 1990. Since then, Law & Order has had six other spinoffs, most notably Law & Order: SVU, the newer Law & Order: Organized Crime and Law & Order: Criminal Intent, as well as shorter-lived spinoffs Law & Order: Trial by Jury, Law & Order: LA, and Law & Order: True Crime.

Before we find out if Law & Order: For the Defense will be another successful branch of the franchise, here is everything we know about the new show.

What is the premise of ‘Law & Order: For the Defense’? 

For essentially its entire run and no matter the spinoff, Law & Order has been about telling the story of the police and prosecutors who work to put bad guys away. Law & Order: For the Defense looks at the other side of the equation, the defense lawyers tasked with proving their client’s innocence. The show will also take a broad look at the criminal justice system.

“This new show is exciting for me personally,” said Wolf when Law & Order: For the Defense was picked up. “We spent the last 30 years on shows that played offense. Now it will be great to play defense, and being able to do it with Carol is an honor and an opportunity for both of us to do television that hasn’t been done before.”

The Law & Order franchise has always been one that uses real-life events to inspire some of its storytelling to stay as timely as possible. And with many of the headline making cases we have seen in recent years, they certainly aren’t going to be lacking on possible material.

Who is in the ‘Law & Order: For the Defense’ cast?

Many of the actors that have partaken in the Law & Order franchise have become synonymous with the characters they play in the shows. Jerry Orbach as Lennie Briscoe, Sam Waterstone as Jack McCoy, Mariska Hargitay as Olivia Benson and Christopher Meloni as Elliot Stabler.

Law & Order: For the Defense could very well create a new iconic TV character, but just who will be playing them we still don’t know. NBC ordered the spinoff in May, but no cast members were announced at that time and we are still waiting to hear who will be making up the defense team for this new series.

What is the ‘Law & Order: For the Defense’ release date? 

Law & Order: For the Defense will become part of NBC’s primetime lineup right when the new TV year kicks off in the fall. While we don’t have an exact date, the pilot episode of Law & Order: For the Defense is scheduled to air sometime in September, according to IMDb.

What we do know is that Law & Order: For the Defense will air on Thursdays from 8-9 p.m. ET, according to NBCUniversal’s materials. As a result, Thursdays on NBC have gone from being the home of its marquee comedies to being all about Law & Order. 

Law & Order: For the Defense will serve as the lead-in for Law & Order: SVU at 9 p.m., followed by Law & Order: Organized Crime at 10 p.m.

Is there a ‘Law & Order: For the Defense’ trailer?

Law & Order: For the Defense appears to still be in the process of development (though on a deadline with its expected fall launch). And with no cast announced, it should come as no surprise that we are without a trailer as of right now.

In all likelihood, any trailer for Law & Order: For the Defense will be held off until late summer or even just a couple weeks before the show’s premiere. With an established fanbase already in place, Law & Order doesn’t need to do a whole lot to build anticipation for a new spinoff.
