“When I was reading it, I'm like, ‘This cannot be real. And it is, shockingly, a very true story, about a Kansas City's teen whose whole world comes crashing down when she learns that her uncle is actually a serial killer responsible for the murders of multiple women in the area, including her biological mother.

Per the movie's official synopsis: "Heather Robinson (Rachel Stubington) grew up in a loving family in Illinois and, by the time she was a teen, had long known that she had been adopted as an infant by her parents. As a parent himself, Line of Duty star Martin Compston can understand the turmoil his character endures in Prime Video's new three-part psychological thriller Fear, centred on a family pushed to their limit when their menacing neighbour accuses them of child abuse.

"It's probably the worst thing any parent can be accused of and, these days, an accusation seems to stick before there's any evidence," says Martin, who shares a four-year-old son with his wife, actor and model Tianna Flynn.

The Scottish actor stars alongside The Lazarus Project’s Anjli Mohindra, as married couple Martyn and Rebecca Berwick, who relocate from London to a beautiful new house in Glasgow with their two young children.

Life in their dream home soon turns into a nightmare, however, as their basement-dwelling neighbour Jan (Tom Jones' Solly McLeod) starts making unnerving remarks towards Rebecca, initiating a campaign of intimidation against the couple, which culminates in him accusing them of physically, mentally and sexually abusing their children.

With the authorities refusing to step in, Martyn and Rebecca feel helpless. How far will Martyn go to ensure his family isn’t living in fear?

Here Martin, 40, and Anjli, 34, tell us more…

What do Martyn and Rebecca make of their new neighbour Jan?

Anjli: "When Martyn and Rebecca meet Jan, he appears to offer friendship and a sense of community, which is what the couple have perhaps been starved of in London. Jan presents himself to Rebecca as this wounded soul, so you really feel for him. But it's not long before the relationship turns on its head and we start to see more of Jan’s insidious tendencies."

Martin: "Based on Dirk Kurbjuweit’s book Fear, I think it was intended for the neighbour to be played by someone older. But instead of having a creepy old man stalking this family, there’s this young guy who appears to just want some neighbours — but he's very damaged and takes everything the wrong way…"

Indeed, following a misunderstanding, troubled Jan accuses Martyn and Rebecca of abusing their two children…

Martin: "It’s a horrible time for the Berwicks, however, we also learn Jan has endured a horrific past. So this drama poses two questions: ‘How far would you go to defend your name and protect your children?’ and 'How much does historic childhood trauma excuse present behaviour?'"

Anjli: "This is one of those rare dramas where the villain of the piece is so humanised. We’re often just presented with the ‘threat’ and not the inner workings of why someone does what they do. I hope this drama makes viewers consider how they’d handle the situation and who’s right or wrong."

What does Solly McLeod bring to the role of Jan?

Martin: "Solly’s such a wonderful actor that even when Jan's stepping over the line, you still feel sympathy for him. Throughout the drama, Jan and Martyn are in each other’s orbit and on each other’s smart devices but Solly and I don’t really have many scenes together until one big showdown - yet the Berwicks’ house creates a real sense of claustrophobia and makes it feel like we're all in that one space all of the time."

What was it like filming in the Berwicks’ magnificent house? And, Martin, you’re based mainly in Las Vegas in the US, what was it like being back in your native Glasgow?

Martin: "The house is situated in Glasgow's West End, a very desirable postcode overlooking Kelvingrove Park — it’s a beautiful place and the architecture's just stunning. The house has this impressive staircase and all these areas to explore, so the kids thought they were living in a castle. It was nice being close to my place in Greenock so I could nip home and I also took the team to different bars and restaurants. I felt like a tour guide!"

The influence and capabilities of smart technology is a major theme in the drama. How do you feel about the impact of technology on our lives and in our homes?

Anjli: "I've always been terrified of smart devices… then I discovered my boyfriend has [smart assistant] Siri on his phone! I was like: ‘How long have you had Siri next to our bed!? I don't know how comfortable I feel about that!’ Reading the scripts for this, it felt like a tangible fear; it makes you look around your home, wondering if this tech is being abused and if the ‘threat’ could be near. It's a massive component in the drama, and really quite eerie."

Finally, have you ever had any nightmare neighbours? Or have you ever been one?

Anjli: "For the first five years I lived in London, I had way too many house parties; I think every neighbour in the block I lived in hated us!"

Martin: "I once had a flatmate, who was a singer in a band. I'd be on the road quite a bit with work and, whenever I’d return, the lovely old man downstairs would come to me and politely say: ‘Martin, the singing’s just going on a wee bit’. When he showed me he’d bought earplugs, I knew it was time to have a word with my flatmate!"

"Held captive in a cold and dark garage, Laura is repeatedly sexually assaulted by her abductor and her and her children are beaten and abused for years. One day, Laura manages to sneak a note to the outside world and authorities are able to rescue her and her family. Much to Laura’s surprise, her note not only lead the police to her and her family, but two other women and their children being held captive in the same house."

Per the network, the movie's official synopsis reads: "The local sheriff of a picturesque mountain lake resort town partners with a burnt-out big-city female detective to help uncover the sinister truth behind a series of annual 'accidental' deaths, leading them to believe that a serial killer, hidden among the tourists and residents, may be preying on vacationers each year."

Actress Mercedes de la Zerda — who recently played another detective, Amielynn Vega, on the Prime Video crime drama Cross — portrays Ally Foster, our burned-out female detective. She's joined in The Bear Lake Murders cast by Tom Stevens (Moonshine, Jailbreak Lovers) as town sheriff Roy Martin, as well as Blake Williams as Brodie Doyle, Magalie as Rebecca Martin, Brandon Giddens as Miles, Tavia Cervi as Eve, Chris Fassbender as Caden Hodge, Jennifer Procé as Sienna Hartley, and Jonas Janz as Austin.

The intruders barged their way inside and took hostage the two-months-pregnant Borges, as well as her husband Rubens Laureano Morais and their 5-year-old son Ryan, for three torturous days, demanding an exorbitant sum of money for ransom for the family's freedom. That home invasion is, terrifyingly, a true story and one that serves as the basis for Lifetime's newest thriller, Terror Comes Knocking: The Marcela Borges Story, as part of the network's "Ripped from the Headlines" series.

Premiering tonight, January 11 at 8pm Eastern Time on Lifetime, the true crime flick stars Orange is the New Black alum Dascha Polanco as Marcela Borges, with Johnathan Sousa playing Rubens and Alessio Andrada as Ryan. The film's official synopsis reads: "A pregnant Marcela Borges and her family face terror when armed intruders demand $200,000 from their Florida home. With no access to such funds, Marcela must make critical decisions to protect her loved ones from the violent captors."

Polanco, Sousa and Andrada are joined in the Terror Comes Knocking cast by Nisa Gunduz, Marisa McIntyre, Ivan Lopez, Jorge Molina, Ema Ines, Marito Lopez and Mitchell Jaramillo. Per Lifetime, the official synopsis for The Holiday Junkie reads: "Andie and her mother Mimi run a company called The Holiday Junkie, a decorating and planning service for all holiday needs. But after Mimi passes away, Andie is forced to face her first Christmas without her mother and carry The Holiday Junkie torch all on her own. Despite the challenges, Andie may also find some love at Christmas along the way!" Along with Hewitt as Andie and hubby Brian as her onscreen love interest Mason, the cast also features Kristin Chenoweth, Lynn Andrews, Greg Grunberg and Debra Christofferson.

In a new interview with What to Watch, Hewitt talked about being able channel her real-life grief into The Holiday Junkie: “I just think it’s kismet. I just think it’s perfect timing. My mom was a big perfect-timing person, and I look at it as like, this is the one I was meant to do."

“I know even 12 years past losing [my mom] now, every Christmas is hard for me. I have that moment or moments where it breaks my heart that she’s not here to meet my kids or join in cookie-making with us or something. So, I wanted those people to be seen. And Brian’s character in the movie is having grief as well, but it’s the loss of a love and a wedding,” Hewitt said. “We really wanted to tell a full story for everyone who might feel joy and pain at Christmas.”

It’s hard to believe that Jennifer Love Hewitt has never acted in a Christmas movie (up until now). After all, the 9-1-1 star has a knack for holiday planning, as she details in her debut memoir, Inheriting Magic: My Journey Through Grief, Joy, Celebration and Making Everything Magical. Lifetime’s The Holiday Junkie premieres on December 14 at 8 pm ET/PT, and in partnership with Ferrero Rocher’s Add Your Golden Touch campaign, Hewitt spoke to What to Watch about the new film and how heavily it’s based on her real life.

“What’s crazy is that I’ve never been asked to do a Christmas movie, which is so weird, because hello, I’m a descendant of Santa. I am part elf. We know this,” Hewitt jokes with WTW. She quickly discovered that filming a Christmas movie meant more joy on set, even though it was the middle of June in Los Angeles.

The Holiday Junkie is about a woman named Andie who loses her mother, Mimi, and must experience Christmas without her for the first time — a plot that Hewitt knows all too well, as her mother, Patricia Hewitt, passed away in 2012. “I just think it’s kismet. I just think it’s perfect timing. My mom was a big perfect-timing person, and I look at it as like, this is the one I was meant to do,” she says.

Hewitt directed and stars in the Lifetime movie, alongside her real-life children and husband, Brian Hallisay, who plays Andie’s love interest, Mason, who’s experiencing a different kind of loss. Creating it was deeply personal and cathartic for the I Know What You Did Last Summer star, and it lent a hand to healing on her own grief journey.

It was really important to Hewitt to present a joyful story, but with the heart of it being loss. “I know even 12 years past losing [my mom] now, every Christmas is hard for me. I have that moment or moments where it breaks my heart that she’s not here to meet my kids or join in cookie-making with us or something. So, I wanted those people to be seen. There are little Easter eggs throughout the movie that are a nod to Hewitt’s mom. When you see snow in the movie, know it was done by the same company that used to do it at Patricia’s house. When you see penguins, know it was Patricia’s favorite animal. When you see a glittery Santa, know that Patricia gave it to her daughter 20 years ago. Between the personal connection to the story, the dedications to a passed loved one and starring alongside her husband and kids, The Holiday Junkie is truly a family affair for Hewitt.

Still the movie is based, yet not based, on Hewitt’s real life; roughly 50/50. “The biggest difference is [the two lead characters] meet after her mom has passed. Brian actually did get to meet my mom once, and they actually slow danced together at my birthday party, which was such a weird moment and beautiful moment in hindsight,” Hewitt says.

When asked what she hopes viewers take away from The Holiday Junkie, Hewitt says, “That it’s OK to feel both in the holidays. That it’s OK to have magic come out of grief. That it’s OK to move on from grief into magic and love. That that’s what we’re supposed to do when we’re left behind. That’s what they want for us, and that it’s beautiful to do so. And that everybody should believe in the Christmas spirit somehow, however you choose to let go, let into it, give into it and let it fix all that stuff in your heart that you can’t fix the rest of the year. That’s what it’s there for.”

The actress told Swooon: “What was funny for Dan and I, specifically, is that we had done a movie together previously, where he played the ex-husband that I wanted nothing to do with, and then we ended up being cast together in this movie where he becomes the man that my character falls in love with. That was really fun for us off-camera because we just enjoy working together.”

The Lifetime network delves into an intriguing community — the rural and traditional Amish movement — for its latest mystery flick. Premiering tonight, November 2, at 8pm Eastern Time, A Kidnapping in Amish Country centers on Lena (Jorja Cadence), an Amish woman with a checker past whose life is upended when her daughter is horrifyingly abducted. 

Desperate to reunite with her child, Lena is forced to turn to the only person who can help: her estranged best friend, Skye (Elise Bauman), who has renounced the Amish way of life and since found fame on social media. Together, they race against time to save Lena's daughter from her kidnappers. 

Alongside lead actresses Jorja Cadence (Rabbit Hole, Priscilla) and Elise Bauman (One More Time, Jane), the cast of A Kidnapping in Amish Country includes Benjamin Sutherland, Devon MacDonald, Allegra Fulton, Jamie Champagne, Michael Ellero, Sam Wexler, Ryelyn Cressman, David Thompson and Roger Shank. Cat Hostick—who also directed Lifetime's recent release Taken in Plain Sight—directed the new thriller, with a screenplay from Taylor Warren Groff.

A Kidnapping in Amish Country is the latest new title on Lifetime's fall movie slate. Recent releases that hit the network this past month include Nobody Dumps My Daughter, starring Ana Ortiz, Jasmine Vega and Sheila E.; Husband, Father, Killer: The Alyssa Pladl Story, with actors Jackie Cruz, Matreya Scarrwener and Matthew MacCaull; and Mormon Mom Gone Wrong: The Ruby Franke Story, headlined by Heather Locklear and Emilie Ullerup. 

Running into an ex unexpectedly is always a tension-filled encounter. But imagine if said former romantic partner was a criminal who pops up at your house decades after your break-up to ask you to hide him them after they've escaped from prison. That's the over-the-top premise of the newest Lifetime Original Movie, Don't Scream, It's Me, which premieres tonight on the network. 

The official movie synopsis reads: "Fifteen years ago, Liz’s ex-boyfriend, Drew, was caught robbing a bank. Now, he’s in her backyard, asking her to hide him after a prison escape. She agrees to help–but only once her husband is out of the house." 

Actress Kaylah Zander (The Recruit, Fire Country) leads the cast as Liz Hamer, with Nathanael Vass (Mommy's Stolen Memories, Wedding Season) as her ex-boyfriend and escaped convict Drew, and Matt Hamilton (The Cases of Mystery Lane: Death Is Listening, Death in the Cul-De-Sac) as Liz's husband Jay, who is sure to be surprised when he comes home to find an on-the-run prisoner hiding in his house. The cast also includes Roark Critchlow as Wesley Frost, Eva Tavares as Blair, Juliette Hawk as Young Liz, Riley Ellis-Buckle as Young Jay and Kennedy Rowe as Mallory. Don’t Scream, It’s Me was written by Taylor Warren Goff and directed by Wendy Ord (The Ice Rink Murders).

Lifetime's latest thriller is a doozy, even by the network's scandalous standards: part of the channel's "Ripped from the Headlines" movie slate, Husband, Father, Killer: The Alyssa Pladl Story is based on a disturbing true story of a man who impregnated his biological daughter after reconnecting with her as an adult years after her adoption, an encounter that will have lasting and, horrifyingly, fatal consequences for the Pladl family.

The official film synopsis reads: "Alyssa (Jackie Cruz) and Steven (Matthew MacCaull) have an intense relationship from the start and move in together when Alyssa is an impressionable teen. After they have a daughter of their own, their path takes a dark turn when Steven becomes physically abusive toward the infant. Alyssa senses the situation is dire and puts the child up for adoption…little does she know, 18 years later their daughter, now named Katie (Matreya Scarrwener), would seek them out."

"After an instant connection when they reunite, Steven convinces Katie to move in with him, Alyssa and their two young daughters, promising her opportunities to pursue her passions. Steven starts neglecting the rest of the family and Alyssa finally has enough and moves out. When Alyssa discovers that Katie and Steven are having an affair and expecting, she confronts them and tries to convince Katie of Steven’s abusive past. Katie refuses to listen until it’s too late."

Along with Cruz, MacCaull and Scarrwener, the cast for Husband, Father, Killer: The Alyssa Pladl Story includes Belle Furguson, Sebastien Roberts, Joselyn Picard, Jacqueline Ann Steuart and Cale Ambrozic. Elisabeth Röhm (Devil on Campus: The Larry Ray Story) directs and executive produces, with a script from Stephen Tolkin.
