It might be the film industry's biggest night, but ABC is leaving a little room for some music, too — directly following tonight's live telecast of the 97th annual Academy Awards, the alphabet network will air a special preview of American Idol season 23 and give fans an early introduction to this season's new judges' panel, which features a very familiar face.

Yes, for the first time in the franchise's history, an American Idol alum is officially joining the judging panel, with season four winner and eight-time Grammy Award winner Carrie Underwood pulling up a chair beside returning judges Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan to give her firsthand expertise to the next generation of talents vying for a shot at Idol stardom. (Longtime host Ryan Seacrest is also back this season.) Tonight's 30-minute sneak peek, which is set to air at 10:30pm Eastern Time (if the Oscars are on time, of course), will also give viewers a first look at this year's round of auditions and the talented singers and musicians potentially competing this season.

“Carrie Underwood is the first American Idol alum ever to join the judging panel. Her global superstar status as the most successful Idol winner to date makes her a perfect fit for the show,” Megan Wolflick, showrunner and executive producer of American Idol, said in a press release. “She embodies the true spirit of Idol as she herself is the definition of the Cinderella story. Our future hopefuls will have the chance to receive advice from someone who has walked in their exact footsteps every step of the way.”

A week after tonight's special preview, the actual premiere of American Idol — the eighth edition of the iconic music competition on ABC and the franchise's overall 23rd season — will air with a two-hour episode on Sunday, March 9 at 8pm ET on ABC. To watch live, you're going to need access to ABC; however, for those that have cut ties with traditional cable/satellite TV, ABC is also a part of live TV streaming services such as FuboTV, Hulu with Live TV and YouTube TV). Episodes also become available to watch the next day over on Hulu.

The biggest night in movies is officially here: The curtains are going up on the Academy Awards tonight, Sunday, March 2, and some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry will soon be taking the stage as presenters, performers and, potentially, new Oscar winners.

The 2025 Oscars celebrates movies that came out in 2024, with high-profile titles like The Brutalist, Wicked, Anora, Emilia Perez and Dune: Part Two expected to scoop up awards across various categories — though diehard Oscar watchers are primed for some surprise upsets and dark-horse wins.

If there are still a few films you need to catch up on before tonight's big telecast, you're going to want to know how to watch all of the Oscar nominees. (How else are you going to impress the guests at your Oscars viewing party later with all of your correct guesses in every single award category?)

And you'll also have to know how you can watch the 2025 Academy Awards ceremony live from around the world — here's everything you know for a star-studded Oscars Sunday tonight.

How to watch the 2025 Oscars in the US

In the US, the 2025 Oscars ceremony will be broadcast on Sunday, March 2, from 7pm ET/4pm PT. (Note that the start time is an hour earlier than in past years, when the Oscars would typically start at 8pm ET/5pm PT.)

You can watch the ceremony in one place and one place only: on ABC, or whatever your local affiliate station for the basic cable channel is. Easy breezy!

Statistically speaking, you probably already have access to ABC, but if you don't — or would rather watch the Oscars online — a few live TV streaming services will let you live stream ABC over the internet. Fubo, DirecTV, Hulu with Live TV and YouTube TV all let you stream ABC as well as a wide variety of other channels. The former offers a Fubo free trial, which may sway subscribers, but you can see prices for all below.

The show will also be streaming on-demand on Hulu, with subscribers also able to catch up on the show after it's been broadcast. Hulu costs $9.99 per month for its ad tier or $18.99 ad-free, or $10.99 as part of the basic Disney Bundle.

How to watch the 2025 Oscars in the UK

The 2025 Oscars airing earlier than normal is great news in the UK, given how late the ceremony starts, but you're still going to be up until the early hours watching it. The ceremony is being broadcast on Sunday, March 2, with coverage of the red-carpet arrivals kicking off at 10:30pm GMT and the awards ceremony commencing at midnight. The show will conclude around 3:05am GMT.

The show will be aired live on ITV1, so you can use it on your TV or using ITVX if you'd rather watch it online on a computer or your phone. We've got a guide on how to watch live TV using ITVX here.

Both options are, of course, free to license fee payers.

How to watch the 2025 Oscars in Australia

The 2025 Oscars fall at a fairly reasonable hour in Australia, albeit technically a day late: the ceremony is set to begin at 11am on Monday, March 3 and end around 1:30pm.

You can watch a live stream of the event for free online by using the streaming service 7Plus, or using your TV on Channel 7.

How to watch the 2025 Oscars everywhere else

The Oscars will be broadcasting around the world, with the Academy sharing the exact place where viewers can watch it in various countries right here.

Even before the awards start getting handed out, the Oscars night is already an exciting affair thanks to the glamorous fashions being paraded down the red carpet by the event's illustrious attendees. The biggest names in the movie industry will be heading to Los Angeles' Dolby Theatre tonight for the 97th annual Academy Awards, including famously stylish nominees like Cynthia Erivo, Timothée Chalamet, Ariana Grande, Colman Domingo, Demi Moore and Zoe Saldaña, and we're making sure you don't miss one glitzy minute.

Ahead of tonight's 2025 Oscars telecast, ABC will begin its official red-carpet pre-show at 6:30pm Eastern Time, which will air live on the alphabet network and stream live on Hulu, with hosts Julianne Hough and Jesse Palmer as your guides for the evening.

However, if you want to get the sartorial fun started even earlier, E! will kick off its own pre-show fashion coverage, Live From E!: The Oscars, beginning at 4pm ET. Hosted by Access Hollywood's Zuri Hall, the E! show will feature interviews with the night's biggest stars, no doubt including host Conan O'Brien and big-name presenters like Emma Stone, Cillian Murphy, Andrew Garfield, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Miley Cyrus, Oprah Winfrey and more.

Both ABC and E! are included in most cable packages. However, if you don't have cable, live TV streaming services will enable you to watch the ceremony as it airs, including Fubo, DirecTV, Hulu with Live TV and YouTube TV.

We've gone through the Golden Globes, countless critics awards, the BAFTAs and the guilds. Now it's time for the main event, the 2025 Oscars. As the Academy votes on what they believe are the best and most accomplished movies of 2024 — from Anora to Wicked — I've compiled my own Oscar predictions of what I believe will win on Sunday, March 2.

Below you'll find my predicted winner in all 23 categories, as well as a little explanation as to why I'm going with that pick and what other nominees could play spoiler when the envelope is officially opened. My best ever scores were when I just got three categories wrong (20/23 in 2022, 21/24 in 2018); can I do better than that this year?

We'll find out on Sunday, March 2, starting at 7 pm ET/4 pm PT. But in the meantime, here are my full slate of Oscar predictions

Best Actor

If I was voting, I would be between Timothée Chalamet for A Complete Unknown and Colman Domingo for Sing Sing, but guessing what the Academy might do, I think they give Adrien Brody his second Oscar for his work in The Brutalist. Chalamet is my top alternative, while Sebastian Stan for The Apprentice is the dark horse here. Predicted winner: Adrien Brody, The Brutalist

Best Actress

It was a great year of leading actress performances. While Mikey Madison for Anora and Fernanda Torres for I’m Still Here could play spoilers, I think the narrative around Demi Moore and her superb performance in The Substance is too good for the Oscars to pass up. Predicted winner: Demi Moore, The Substance

Best Supporting Actor

This one has felt pretty settled for a while, as Kieran Culkin has been cleaning up with critics and other award shows for his performance in A Real Pain. I expect him to continue with a win at the Oscars, though if there’s an upset to be had I believe it lies in Edward Norton’s performance in A Complete Unknown. Predicted winner: Kieran Culkin, A Real Pain

Best Supporting Actress

Another one where the writing appears to be on the wall, and it reads Zoe Saldana. While Emilia Perez has taken a hit in the lead up to the Oscars because of controversial past comments resurfacing from star Karla Sofia Gascon, that shouldn’t impact Saldana’s crowning for some of the best work of her career. Predicted winner: Zoe Saldana, Emilia Perez

Best Adapted Screenplay

I believe that this could be A Complete Unknown’s best chance to win an award on Oscar night, but I think the Academy opts for the twisty adaptation of the best-seller Conclave from Peter Straughan, as many other award bodies have done so far. Predicted winner: Peter Straughan, Conclave

Best Original Screenplay

I can legitimately make a case for four of the five Original Screenplay nominees to win (sorry September 5, I still love you). A win of Jesse Eisenberg’s A Real Pain or Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance would be recognition of career best work; a win for The Brutalist would probably be a strong sign of a potentially dominant night. But I think Sean Baker’s beloved comedy wins the Academy’s heart here. Predicted winner: Sean Baker, Anora

Best Animated Feature

This feels like a two horse race between The Wild Robot and Flow. Flow made the early statement with a win at the Golden Globes, and with the growing contingency of international voters it could repeat that feat here. However, The Wild Robot earned two additional nominations for Sound and Score, and I think that wide-ranging support amongst voters will help it pull out the win. Predicted winner: The Wild Robot

Best Documentary

I admittedly have not seen any of the nominated documentaries this year, so I’m just going with what appears to be the betting favorite, and that is with No Other Land. One of the most awarded docs of the year, the movie depicts a growing alliance between a Palestinian activist and an Israeli journalist. Predicted winner: No Other Land

Best International Film

Even before the controversy surrounding Emilia Perez broke out, I’m Still Here was building some momentum on the awards circuit and became a dark horse to win. Now, it is the presumed favorite and gives the Academy a chance to award acclaimed filmmaker Walter Salles. Emilia Perez could still win, and if I’m asked to peg a dark horse, Flow could get some votes if people think it should get some recognition but went with The Wild Robot in animation. Predicted winner: I’m Still Here

Best Cinematography

Cinematography is a pretty competitive category between The Brutalist, Dune: Part Two and Nosferatu. Dune: Part One won in this category a few years ago, but the sequel has had a harder time building awards momentum despite (in my opinion) being the better movie. Ultimately I think this comes down to the gothic beauty of Nosferatu or the 70mm scope of The Brutalist. I’ll go with the latter. Predicted winner: The Brutalist

Best Costume Design

Does the Oscar go to Elphaba’s iconic hat, Nosferatu’s cape, the cardinals’ robes, Roman gladiator armor or Bob Dylan’s sunglasses? Of course there’s more to the great costume work of all these nominees, just cherry picking. As for who wins, I’m going with Wicked. Predicted winner: Wicked

Best Editing

A lot of Oscar pundits say a Best Editing nomination is a big sign of a movie’s chances of winning Best Picture. That’s proven true as eight of the 10 Oscars has seen the eventual Best Picture winner be nominated. Pretty much the five biggest contenders for the top prize are all nominated this year, so who am I going with? I’ll go with the taut political thrills of Conclave. (FYI, the conversion of the Best Editing winner going on to win Best Picture doesn’t have as good a precedent recently, as only two out of 10 have done so; though they were the last two, Oppenheimer and Everything Everywhere All at Once). Predicted winner: Conclave

Best Makeup & Hairstyling

2016’s Suicide Squad is an Oscar winner thanks to its Best Makeup and Hairstyling win. None of this year’s nominees stick out like that one. So who wins? Give me The Substance and its incredible body horror effects. Predicted winner: The Substance

Best Music (Original Score)

Ever since I heard the music of The Brutalist in the movie’s first trailer, I just knew that it was destined to be Oscar nominated. How it plays with the images of the movie really helps give it an epic scale. So, for that reason I’m making it my pick to take the Oscar for best score. Predicted winner: The Brutalist

Best Music (Original Song)

Diane Warren is once again competing for her first competitive Oscar win after 16 nominations (this time for her song in The Six Triple Eight), but “El Mal” from Emilia Perez has been taking home the prize practically every time it’s up for competition. I don’t think that will change on Oscar night. Predicted winner: Emilia Perez, “El Mal”

Best Production Design

The recreation of 18th century Gothic styles in Nosferatu or the futuristic look of Dune are all great, but bringing the world of Oz back to the screen in incredible new ways is enough for me to make Wicked my pick here. Predicted winner: Wicked

Best Sound

Like so many of the below-the-line categories, it feels like it is coming down to Dune: Part Two and Wicked. Perhaps just on the back of “Defying Gravity” alone, I’m giving the edge to Wicked and making it my pick for Best Sound. Predicted winner: Wicked

Best Visual Effects

It feels wrong to only give Dune: Part Two one Oscar, but that’s where things feel like they are going. Its closest competitor here is probably Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, but the Academy has failed to recognize the franchise in the past in this category despite revolutionary work; I don’t think the fourth entry is the one that is going to break that trend. Predicted winner: Dune: Part Two

Best Shorts

I unfortunately wasn’t able to see most of the Oscar-nominated shorts this year, so these are going to be entirely shots in the dark, so I’ll just group them together:

Best Animated Short predicted winner: Wander to Wonder
Best Documentary Short predicted winner: I Am Ready, Warden
Best Live Action Short predicted winner: The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent

Best Directing

The idea of Best Director and Best Picture not going to the same movie has been a much more common trend in recent years, as six of the last 15 Best Director winners did not see their movie go on to win Best Picture. That could happen again, as The Brutalist’s Brady Corbet is a popular pick. But after winning the Directors Guild of America award, which has seen its last four winners go on to repeat at the Oscars, I’m going with Sean Baker winning for Anora. Predicted winner: Sean Baker, Anora

Best Picture

And as you may have guessed from my Best Director prediction, I believe this is a year when there is no split between Best Director and Best Picture, as I see Anora taking home the top prize of the night. After it seemed like this award season couldn’t settle on a clear front-runner, Anora’s big wins at the Critics Choice Awards, Directors Guild and Producers Guild on February 7 and 8 changed that. Anora brings it home as the 97th Best Picture winner. Predicted winner: Anora

Netflix viewers are rediscovering The Menu, the 2022 dark comedy starring Ralph Fiennes, Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicholas Hoult, having made it one of the top movies available on the platform ever since it was added at the beginning of February. The movie is a lot of fun and is “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes (read WTW’s The Menu review for our thoughts), but thinking back to the movie I’ve come to the conclusion that Fiennes’ would have been an awesome, and well-deserved, Oscar nominee for his performance.

In case you need a refresher, The Menu takes place at a lavish, world-class restaurant on a remote island, with Fiennes playing a famous chef and Taylor-Joy and Hoult among the guests partaking in a special dinner. I won’t go into detail into the plot if you haven’t seen it and want to catch up with it on Netflix, but Fiennes is serving up much more than just flavorful dishes in what is ultimately a satire of the upper class.

Fiennes is among this year’s crop of Best Actor Oscar nominees for his performance in Conclave, his first Oscar nom since 1996’s The English Patient, but his deliciously devious and fun performance could have and in hindsight should have ended that drought sooner.

As Chef Slowik, Fiennes commands his kitchen like a military platoon. As his guests soon learn, he is actually controlling everything about this night. While this makes Fiennes an imposing figure and by the strictest definition the villain of the movie, we are absolutely hooked by him and very much see his viewpoint as things progress. That all beautifully culminates in the climax of the movie, where if just for a moment, something changes in Slowik, adding another dimension to the character.

Multiple awards bodies recognized the quality of the work and chose to nominate Fiennes, including the Golden Globes (though they of course have additional nomination spots by splitting most categories into drama and comedy), the London Critics Circle and other regional critics groups. Yet Fiennes remained a long shot and eventually was not included in the list of 2023 Oscar nominees.

Reviewing who got in ahead of him, Fiennes absolutely has a case to be included. No disrespect to any of the actual Best Actor nominees (Austin Butler in Elvis, Colin Farrell in The Banshees of Inisherin, Paul Mescal in Aftersun, Bill NIghy in Living and winner Brendan Fraser in The Whale), but Fiennes’ performance is just as memorable, if not more so, than most of them. The only I would pick ahead of Fiennes is Farrell.

And if you want to make the case that Fiennes’ performance belonged more in the Supporting Actor category (as some awards bodies did), the case is just as strong against, especially against the likes of Judd Hirsch for The Fabelmans and Brian Tyree Henry for Causeway (personally I wouldn’t swap Fiennes in for Brendan Gleeson or Barry Keoghan in The Banshees of Inisherin or winner Ke Huy Quan in Everything Everywhere All at Once).

Ultimately, The Menu isn’t the kind of movie that gets nominated for Oscars, even as trends are starting to change within the Academy (The Substance’s strong haul this year being evidence of that). All the more reason in hindsight that had Fiennes getting an Oscar nomination for The Menu would have been a fun, deserved change of pace.

The Menu is now streaming on Netflix in the US; it is streaming on Disney Plus in the UK.

One of the most exciting additions to Netflix’s streaming library in February is not a star-studded epic or bingeable TV show, but the Oscar-nominated short Anuja, which arrived on the streamer on February 5.

The Oscar shorts are often the hardest group of nominees to watch (which is why they are also often the hardest for those participating in Oscar pools to pick correctly), so to have a nominee easily available on the world’s largest streaming service is a boon for movie fans who love to see the acclaimed work of Oscar nominees each year.

As for the movie itself, Anuja is about a brilliant 9-year-old girl in India who works in a sweatshop but is given the chance to attend school. She must then make a difficult choice that will impact her and her sister’s future. The short was written and directed by Adam J. Graves and stars Sajda Pathan, Ananya Shanbhag, Nagesh Bhonsle and Gulshan Walia. In addition to its Oscar nomination, Anuja won awards at multiple film festivals in 2024, including the HollyShorts Film Festival and New York Shorts International Film Festival.

This is actually one of two Oscar-nominated shorts that Netflix has available on its platform. The other is The Only Girl in the Orchestra, which was nominated for Best Documentary Short Film. Other Netflix movies that received Oscar nominations this year include Emilia Perez, Maria and The Six Triple Eight.

While Netflix is still hoping to win its first Best Picture trophy (with Emilia Perez as its lone shot this year), the streamer has earned multiple trophies for the short categories. It has won six Oscars for short films, including at least one in each of the three Best Animated Short (If Anything Happens I Love You in 2021), Best Documentary Short (The White Helmets in 2017, Period. End of Sentence in 2019 and The Elephant Whisperers in 2023) and Best Live Action Short (Two Distant Strangers in 2021 and The Wonderful World of Henry Sugar last year). Can Anuja, or The Other Girl in the Orchestra, make it lucky number seven (or eight) for Netflix?

We’ll find out on March 2, when the Oscars take place. But between now and then you can watch Anuja and decide for yourself if it is a worthy potential Oscar winner.

The countdown to the 2025 Oscars is on, but while we wait to find out what movies from this past year are going to be enshrined in movie history, Turner Classic Movies is giving movie fans its annual look back at Oscar movies of old with the TCM 31 Days of Oscars, and we’ve got the full 31 Days of Oscars schedule for you right here.

Starting Saturday, February 1, and running into the early hours of Tuesday, March 4, the cable movie channel’s programming is going to be centered entirely around Oscar winners and Oscar nominees from year’s past (from 1928-2017, to be exact), with special themed nights and to movies making their TCM premiere as part of the lineup. TCM’s daytime programming over this period is going to be broken up into movies that won or were nominated in Oscar categories, including marquee ones like Best Picture and Best Actor/Actress as well as now defunct categories like Best Original Story. At night, programming will be focused on Oscar-worth performances based around types of characters (i.e. teachers, cowboys, etc.)

Turner Classic Movies is a cable channel, so to watch it you do have to have a TV package that offers it. The 2025 Oscar nominations dropped earlier this week, and one notable multi-nominee is The Wild Robot: along with being recognized in the Best Animated Feature category, the Academy also nominated the Chris Sanders-directed animated flick for Best Song and Original Score. And if you missed the acclaimed 2024 movie when it hit theaters back September, you can catch up starting today, January 24, as The Wild Robot joins Peacock's streaming platform.

The heartwarming DreamWorks title is a big-screen adaptation of Peter Brown’s beloved, New York Times best-selling novel of the same name. The film's official synopsis reads: "The epic adventure follows the journey of a robot—ROZZUM unit 7134, 'Roz' for short — that is shipwrecked on an uninhabited island and must learn to adapt to the harsh surroundings, gradually building relationships with the animals on the island and becoming the adoptive parent of an orphaned gosling."

Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o (A Quiet Place: Day One, Black Panther) leads the cast as the voice of robot Roz; she's joined by Emmy nominee Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us, The Mandalorian) as fox Fink; Emmy winner Catherine O’Hara (Schitt’s Creek, Best in Show) as opossum Pinktail; Oscar nominee Bill Nighy (Living, Love Actually) as goose Longneck; Kit Connor (Heartstopper, Rocketman) as gosling Brightbill and Oscar nominee Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Fall Guy) as Vontra, a robot that will intersect with Roz’s life on the island. Star Wars lovers will also no doubt recognize the voice of Luke Skywalker himself pop-culture icon Mark Hamill.

If the early slate of 2025 new movies isn’t overly appealing to you, then two of this year’s biggest Oscar 2025 (recognizing 2024’s best movies) hopefuls are returning to movie theaters this weekend, January 17, to entice you to your local theater — Demi Moore’s The Substance and Colman Domingo’s Sing Sing.

The Substance is being released in 350 movie theaters across the US, per IndieWire, while Sing Sing is set to be shown in 500 movie theaters, according to The Hollywood Reporter; in addition, A24 is also going to screen the movie inside correctional facilities in 46 states To find out if and where the movies are going to be playing near you, a great option to check out is Fandango.

Both of these movies are seen as strong contenders to receive a Best Picture nomination when Oscar nominations are officially announced on Thursday, January 23. Their stars are highly likely to be recognized as well, with Domingo a regular fixture among the Best Actor nominations of other award bodies and Moore, following her win at the Golden Globes, building momentum as a potential Oscar winner. If you’ve been wanting to see these movies as they’ve built their awards profile, these re-releases give you a perfect chance to do just that.

If you still need some background through, Sing Sing is a drama about a real-life program that ran at New York’s Sing Sing Correctional Facility where incarcerated men work on their rehabilitation through performing stage productions. Domingo stars as a veteran of the program, who takes another prisoner new to it all under his wing, the latter played by Clarence Maclin, himself a real-life participate of the program. Sing Sing is “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes with a score of 97%.

Though Sing Sing was originally released back in July 2024, it has not been made available for at-home viewing, so this re-release is the only way that people can catch up with the movie at this time.

As for The Substance, this sci-fi, body-horror drama sees Moore star as an actress who is being forced out of the spotlight because of her age. To combat this, she takes the mysterious “Substance,” which promises a “more perfect you.” However, you must strictly adhere to the rules or face significant consequences. You can read WTW’s The Substance review to find out why we loved the movie, but other critics did as well, with The Substance earning a “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, coming in at 89%.

If you can’t make it to movie theaters to watch The Substance, the movie is available via digital on-demand platforms and is streaming on specialty platform Mubi.

Other movies up for Oscars are still playing in movie theaters, including Babygirl, The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Nickel Boys, September 5 and Wicked. A number of the biggest contenders are also now available to watch at home, including A Real Pain, Anora, Conclave and Wicked (as the musical gets the best of both worlds).

Again, expect to hear many of these movies again earn Oscar nominations when they are officially announced on January 23.

While we’ve flipped the calendar to 2025, Hollywood still has some 2024 business to take care of. Namely, the Oscars 2025, aka the 97th Academy Awards, which will recognize many of the best movies and performances from the roster of 2024 new movies.

While the Golden Globes, SAG Awards and other ceremonies are key stops in the awards season, the Oscars remain the pinnacle, as does its coveted Best Picture prize. Adding to the excitement this year is the fact that there is no clear front-runner, meaning we should be in for an exciting Oscar ceremony.

What movies are up for awards this year, who is going to serve as the Oscar host and when is all of this going to take place? Read on for everything you need to know about the Oscars 2025.

Oscars 2025 date

The Oscars will take place on Sunday, March 2, at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood. The ceremony will air at 7 pm ET/4 pm PT on ABC. If you’re a fan of the red carpet proceedings, those begin at 6:30 pm ET/3:30 pm PT on ABC.

In order to watch the Oscars live you must have access to ABC, which is available through traditional pay-TV providers or a live TV streaming service (Fubo, Hulu with Live TV, YouTube TV and Sling TV, the latter in select markets). You can also receive your local ABC station with a TV antenna. If you miss it live, the ceremony will stream on-demand the next day on Hulu.

Oscars 2025 host

Handling emcee duties this year as the Oscars host is Conan O’Brien.

O’Brien was one of the premier late-night TV hosts for almost 30 years with Late Night with Conan O’Brien, The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien and Conan. Currently, he is the host of the popular podcast Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend and the Emmy-winning Conan O’Brien Must Go. This will mark his first time hosting the Oscars, though he previously hosted the Emmys twice.

“We are thrilled and honored to have the incomparable Conan O’Brien host the Oscars this year,” said Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang. “He is the perfect person to help lead our global celebration of film with his brilliant humor, his love of movies, and his live TV expertise. His remarkable ability to connect with audiences will bring viewers together to do what the Oscars do best--honor the spectacular films and filmmakers of this year.”

O’Brien commented on the announcement in his own trademark way: “America demanded it and now it’s happening: Taco Bell’s new Cheesy Chalupa Supreme. In other news, I’m hosting the Oscars.”

Oscars 2025 behind the scenes

Raj Kapoor and Katy Mullan are serving as executive producers for the 97th Academy Awards, with Kapoor also being the showrunner for the ceremony. Hamish Hamilton is directing the proceedings. The three are returning after working on the 2024 Oscars, for which they all won an Emmy; Hamilton has directed the Oscars five times in total.

More creatives from the 96th Oscars are also returning, including production designers Misty Buckley and Alana Billingsley, and red carpet show executive producer David Chamberlin. Michael Bearden is working his first Oscars as the music director.

The first thing out of my mouth when I saw the news that Conan O’Brien would be hosting the 97th Oscars taking place this March was not quite safe for work. It was pure shock as the former late night host, podcaster and, more recently, viral hit from his Hot Ones appearance was never in my mind as a potential Oscars host. My shock quickly turned to excitement as I thought of just how much fun it could be to have O’Brien emcee Hollywood’s biggest night.

O’Brien was — still is honestly — my favorite late night personality, as his zany antics and outrageous humor were so much fun to watch over the years (some I still watch on occasion on YouTube). Though he ended his late night show in 2021, I’m an avid listener to his podcast Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend and loved watching his Max travel series Conan O’Brien Must Go (season 2 is on the way).

With that being the case, of course I’m obviously excited to see what one of my favorite comedians is going to have in store to keep the Oscars telecast a lively experience. But my fandom is not the reason why I believe O’Brien could be one of the better Oscar hosts in recent years. It’s the fact that O’Brien was such a left field pick.

Everyone says that hosting the Oscars is a thankless job. You do well, nobody cares, as success usually means you didn’t do or say anything stupid or make the traditionally three hour-plus broadcast feel longer than it already is. You do poorly, you get raked over the coals for a bit. And if you’re actively part of the industry, there are some inherent risks in poking fun at your peers that have the potential to impact you in the future.

O’Brien is at a point in his career where those risks are minimized. He’s not a late night host anymore, so he doesn’t have to appease a network in fear of losing his job or anything. He’s also likely not too concerned about impressing or pissing off any Hollywood bigwigs, as a movie career does not seem to be of any real interest to him. Yet while he’s not heavily involved in the moviemaking industry, he and his schtick is a known entity from the last 30-plus years that his bits aren’t likely going to be jarring or misunderstood by the audience.

O’Brien also has experience handling this type of show before, as he hosted the Emmys twice. Experience matters, that’s why you typically see Oscar hosts that get more than one shot at it feel more comfortable and run a smoother show.

We had that consistency in recently at the Oscars with Jimmy Kimmel hosting the last two years and four times overall. Kimmel was about as good as you want from a host, but it typically felt safe. That’s not a bad thing as you try to appease a wide base, but the only memorable bit I remember from his stints was joking he’d award a jet ski to the person with the shortest acceptance speech (though he did a commendable job trying to handle the Moonlight/La La Land snafu).

With O’Brien, I honestly have no idea what he could have in store, and that’s thrilling. Yet I’m also not worried about him crossing the line; years on TV, he knows how to push the edge without crossing it. This could be a one time thing for O’Brien (gone are the days of Bob Hope hosting nearly every year, or Billy Crystal’s impressive run of outings), but I could also see this be part of a new chapter in O’Brien’s career should it be something he wants to become a part of his brand.

All in all, O’Brien has a great mix of self-deprecation (see his post where he shared that he is hosting the Oscars), irreverence but also a respect for the history of show business that I believe could make him a great Oscar host. While I’m always excited to see what Oscar nominees end up winning the big awards at the ceremony, this year I’ll be most excited to see what O’Brien does to put his own spin on Oscar night.

All We Imagine as Light

As the Academy has added to its overall membership with filmmakers from outside the US, the Oscars have been more willing to recognize international productions (i.e. Parasite, All Quiet on the Western Front, Anatomy of a Fall). All We Imagine as Light is one of the headlining international entries this year, as the movie was a Palme d'Or nominee at the Cannes Film Festival back in May and currently boasts a 100% "Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It follows two roommates in Mumbai as they deal with the struggles of their relationships. 

Anora

The movie that beat All We Imagine as Light for the Palme d'Or this year was Anora, the latest from indie darling Sean Baker (Tangerine, The Florida Project). Anora follows the Cinderella-like story of a sex worker (Mikey Madison) who impulsively marries the son of a Russian oligarch. But the fairytale is threatened when his parents hear about the news. Four of the last five Palme d'Or winners wound up being nominated for Best Picture, can Anora make it five of six? 

Babygirl

• Release date: December 20 (UK); December 25 (US)
• Cast: Nicole Kidman, Harris Dickinson, Sophia Wilde, Antonio Banderas
• Director: Halina Reijn

One of multiple A24 movies we have on this list, Babygirl takes a different lens to look at the troublesome culture of workplace romance and power dynamics. Nicole Kidman stars as a powerful CEO who threatens her career and personal life when she begins an affair with a much younger intern, played by Harris Dickinson. Kidman, having just been given the AFI Lifetime Achievement Award earlier this year, could be in line for another Oscar if this one lives up the billing. 

Blitz

It's been six years since Steve McQueen, director of Best Picture winner 12 Years a Slave, has helmed a narrative feature (though he's been busy with the acclaimed TV series Small Axe and a couple of documentaries), but he's back with Blitz, a World War 2 story of a young boy determined to return to his mother in London during the Nazi bombing of the city known as the Blitz. This has all the makings of a big-time contender — WW2 setting, a sure-to-be enthralling story, great cast and a well known director — now it just has to deliver.

The Brutliast

When talking about massive, bold epics coming out in fall 2024, much of the talk has been around Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis, but Brady Corbet's The Brutalist is could be the breakout hit between the two. The story centers on a Holocaust survivor and his wife, who come to America and have their life forever changed by a wealthy benefactor. The movie was shot on 70mm and is said to be more than three hours. If it works, it could be then can't miss movie of the year. 

A Complete Unknown

• Release date: December 25 (US); January 17, 2025 (UK)
• Cast: Timothée Chalamet, Elle Fanning, Edward Norton, Boyd Holbrook, Monica Barbaro, Scoot McNairy, Dan Folger
• Director: James Mangold

James Mangold knows a thing or two about making successful music biopics, having directed Walk the Line about Johnny Cash. He tackles another iconic musician in A Complete Unknown, Bob Dylan, portrayed in the movie by Timothée Chalamet. Chalamet is quickly becoming one of the most revered actors of his generation, so is he going to be recognized for that with an Oscar soon or will he have to wait? A Complete Unknown will be key to answering that question. 

Conclave

• Cast: Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, Isabella Rossellini
• Director: Edward Berger

Edward Berger's much anticipated follow up to his Oscar-winning adaptation of All Quiet on the Western Front trades the battlefields of World War 1 for the Sistine Chapel, as Conclave is set in the world of the Catholic Church as a new pope must be selected and dark secrets threaten to be exposed. The material, based on an international best-seller, should be juicy for the four main members of the cast and have them in discussion for awards, while Berger could continue his ascent up the ranks of emerging directors with another critically acclaimed hit.

A Different Man

• Release date: September 20 (US); October 4 (UK)
• Cast: Sebastian Stan, Renate Reinsve, Adam Pearson
• Director: Aaron Schimberg

Earning some of the best notices of his career, A Different Man could be the best chance yet that Sebastian Stan has at earning an Oscar nomination. He plays an aspiring actor who has a radical treatment done for his neurofibromatosis (a genetic disorder that causes benign tumors and growths), only to be beaten out for a role by another actor with a similar condition. Renate Reinsve and Adam Pearson (who has neurofibromatosis in real life) also star. 

Eden

• Release date: TBD
• Cast: Sydney Sweeney, Ana de Armas, Vanessa Kirby, Jude Law, Daniel Bruehl
• Director: Ron Howard

A Beautiful Mind Oscar-winner Ron Howard's latest is a star-studded retelling of historical events that saw Europeans who tried to settle on the Galapagos islands in the early 20th century. While we're awaiting an official release date, Eden will screen at the Toronto International Film Festival where it hopes to build up some early buzz. 

Emilia Perez

• Release date: November 13 (on Netflix)
• Cast: Karla Sofía Gascón, Zoe Saldana, Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz, Edgar Ramirez
• Director: Jacques Audiard

One of Netflix’s high profile original movies this year, Emilia Perez is a story of a cartel leader (the titular Emilia Perez) that fakes her death in an attempt to live the life she wants, told through vibrant song and dance. The movie already has an 88% "Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes after screening at the Cannes Film Festival and is fully expected to get a brief run in movie theaters (though details are still TBD) to qualify for Oscars.

The End

• Cast: Michael Shannon, Tilda Swinton, George MacKay, Moses Ingram
• Director: Joshua Oppenheimer

Another unconventional musical (despite reportedly being influenced by the Golden Age Hollywood style) is The End, which follows the last human family. This movie marks the narrative feature debut of Joshua Oppenheimer, who is a two-time Oscar nominee already for directing the documentaries The Act of Killing and The Look of Silence. First word on The End will come out of Toronto where it is going to premiere. 

The Fire Inside

• Release date: December 25
• Cast: Ryan Destiny, Brian Tyree Henry
• Director: Rachel Morrison

Another director making their feature debut this year is Rachel Morrison (an Oscar-nominated cinematographer for Black Panther), as she helms The Fire Inside, the story of Claressa Shields, who became the first US woman to win boxing gold at the Olympics. The sure to be inspiring movie hopes to win over audiences and should be a showcase for Ryan Destiny as Shields and previous Oscar-nominee Brian Tyree Henry as her coach.

Gladiator II

Only two sequels have ever won Best Picture (The Godfather Part II and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King), but only The Godfather Part II did so after its previous iteration had. So it's not going to be an easy feat for Gladiator II to duplicate after Gladiator won the top trophy more than 20 years ago. But movie fans were enthralled by the Gladiator II trailer (and all the new Coliseum battles) and if the movie can live up to the hype it'll have a chance to make history at the Oscars. 

Hard Truths

Mike Leigh returns for this 23rd movie in his impressive career with Hard Truths, reuniting with his Secret & Lies co-star Marianne Jean-Baptise to tell the story of an extended Black family in London, particularly its prickly matriarch played by Jean-Baptise. Leigh has crafted many brilliant ensemble pieces over the years that really get to the heart of the human experience, which has been rewarded with Oscar recognition in the past with seven total nominations. Can Hard Truths finally snag him his first Oscar win? 

Here

• Release date: November 1 (US); November 15 (UK)
• Cast: Tom Hanks, Robin Wright, Paul Bettany, Kelly Reilly, Michelle Dockery
• Director: Robert Zemeckis

Another exciting reunion this fall comes in Here, where Forrest Gump stars Tom Hanks and Robin Wright once again work with Robert Zemeckis in this uniquely told story. Based on a graphic novel, Here focuses on the different people that live in a single place over generations, capturing important moments and how the times change. It looks like the movie is going to feature only one camera setup, with the scene and characters changing within it. That makes it a curious entry at least, but powerful performances from Hanks, Wright and company could make it an Oscar contender. 

His Three Daughters

• Release date: September 6 (movie theaters); September 20 (Netflix)
• Cast: Carrie Coon, Natasha Lyonne, Elizaeth Olsen, Jay O. Sanders, Jovan Adepo, Jose Febus, Rudy Galvan, Randy Ramos Jr.
• Director: Azazel Jacobs

His Three Daughters depicts three estranged sisters that come together in their father's small apartment to watch over him as he is dying. The movie should be a showcase for its three leading ladies — Coon, Lyonne and Olsen — which could easily have them in the conversation for end-of-year laurels. This type of movie also always seems ripe for a screenplay nom. And if all that comes to pass, don't be surprised if momentum carries it to a possible Best Picture nomination.

Joker: Folie a Deux

• Cast: Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga, Brendan Gleeson, Steve Coogan, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland
• Director: Todd Phillips

Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix's Joker was a bit of a surprise Oscar darling, as the unique spin on the iconic Batman villain earned 11 nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director, and two wins for Best Score and Best Actor for Phoenix. The sequel, Joker: Folie a Deux, is pushing the envelope, as it intends to add a musical element to the deranged story of Arthur Fleck (Phoenix) in addition to Lady Gaga playing the role of Harley Quinn. We won't be surprised this time if Joker: Folie a Deux is another awards favorite. 

Maria

• Cast: Angelina Jolie, Pierfrancesco Favino, Alba Rohrwacher, Haluk Bilginer, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Stephen Ashfield, Valeria Golino
• Director: Pablo Larraín

Pablo Larraín has already told the story of two defining women of the 20th century in Jackie and Spencer, and he'll do so again with Maria, focusing on legendary opera singer Maria Callas. Angelina Jolie stars, marking her first time in a movie since 2021. Following Natalie Portman's nomination for Jackie and Kristen Stewart's for Spencer, expect there to be a lot of hype around Jolie in the Best Actress category.

Nickel Boys

• Release date: October 25 (US)
• Cast: Ethan Herisse, Brandon Wilson, Hamish Linklater, Fred Hechinger, Daveed Diggs, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor
• Director: RaMell Ross

Colson Whitehead's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, Nickel Boys, could add an Oscar to its resume in the near future. The best-selling book about two Black teens at a horrific juvenile detention facility in the 1960s in the south looks to parlay its success from page to screen. After Whitehead's The Underground Railroad was so critically acclaimed, it would be no surprise for more of the author's work to speak to audiences and Oscar voters.

Nightbitch

• Release date: December 6 (US)
• Cast: Amy Adams, Scoot McNairy, Zoë Chao, Mary Holland, Archana Rajan, Jessica Harper, Arleigh Patrick Snowden, Emmett James Snowden
• Director: Marielle Heller

An early contender for the strangest movie to vie for Oscars this year is Marielle Heller and Amy Adams' Nightbitch. Based off of the Rachel Yoder book of the same name, the movie sees Adams play a new mom who begins to suspect that she is transforming into a dog. It might not seem like traditional Oscar bait, but Adams' involvement will definitely make it one to look out for, at the very least as she continues to pursue her first Oscar win.

Nosfertau

• Release date: December 25 (US); January 3, 2025 (UK)
• Cast: Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, Simon McBurney, Willem Dafoe
• Director: Robert Eggers

F.W. Murnau's original silent movie masterpiece Nosferatu wasn't eligible for Oscars because the award didn't yet exist, but a remake of the movie by the talented Robert Eggers could be, as this project is right up The Witch director's alley. This gothic vampire story inspired by Dracula (but for complicated reasons is not), Nosferatu could see the stars align for Eggers to finally get some awards recognition his previous movies have missed out on; at the very least expect things like production and costume design to be strong contenders.

The Outrun

• Release date: September 27 (UK); October 4 (US)
• Cast: Saoirse Ronan, Paapa Essideu, Stephen Dillane, Saskia Reeves, Lauren Lyle, Nabil Elouahabi, Izuka Hoyle 
• Director: Nora Fingscheidt

Already a four-time Oscar nominee, it feels more like a matter of when, not if, Saoirse Ronan is going to win an Oscar. Can The Outrun be that vehicle for her? She's earned rave reviews for her performance as an alcoholic fresh out of rehab who returns to her small hometown in Scotland to come to terms with her addiction and troubled past.

The Piano Lesson

• Release date: November 22 (Netflix)
• Cast: Samuel L. Jackson, John David Washington, Ray Fisher, Danielle Deadwyler, Michael Potts, Corey Hawkins, Skyler Aleece Smith
• Director: Malcolm Washington

August Wilson's work has proven to be catnip for Oscar nominations in recent years with Fences and Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. Now another one of the famed playwright's pieces is set for adaptation, as Samuel L. Jackson and John David Washington headline the ensemble of The Piano Lesson, which follows a family that keeps track of its history through a piano that has been passed down through generations. Denzel Washington is on board as a producer.

Queer

• Cast: Daniel Craig, Drew Starkey, Lesley Manville, Jason Schwartzman, Andra Ursuta, Michael Borremans, David Lowery
• Director: Luca Guadagnino

Luca Guadagnino's Challengers already came out this year to strong reviews and could be a potential Oscar contender, but the director is doubling his chances with the movie Queer. Daniel Craig stars as an expat living his life in 1950s Mexico City surviving on part-time jobs and GI Bill benefits when he embarks on a relationship with a young man named Allerton. Guadagnino is always one to watch, and this could be a strong chance for Craig to land his first-ever Oscar nomination. 

A Real Pain

• Cast: Jesse Eisenberg, Kieran Culkin, Will Sharpe, Jennifer Grey, Kurt Egyiawan
• Director: Jesse Eisenberg

Despite screening movies before the previous year's Oscars are even handed out, Sundance has had a good track record recently of having at least one of its movies perform well at the Oscars. One contender for that this year is A Real Pain, a dramedy written, directed and starring Jesse Eisenberg, who alongside Kieran Culkin play cousins that travel to Poland together for a trip to honor their grandmother, rediscovering their family history and touching on their own issues along the way.

The Room Next Door

• Cast: Julianne Moore, Tilda Swinton, John Turturro, Alessandro Nivola, Juan Diego Botto, Raúl Arévalo, Melina Mathews, Victoria Luengo
• Director: Pedro Almodóvar

Oscar-winner and international sensation Pedro Almodóvar is doing something he's never done before with The Room Next Door — make a feature movie in English. But we should still expect the writer/director to deliver another intimate and powerful story, highlighted by performances from two of the best actresses working: Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton. The Room Next Door has the potential to be a major player with the Oscars. 

Saturday Night

As the historic Saturday Night Live season 50 debuts in 2024, so does Saturday Night, a new movie from Jason Reitman about the very first episode of the sketch comedy show. Told in real-time, it depicts the chaos involved with getting that initial episode ready to air live on TV from a little known producer named Lorne Michaels (Gabriel LaBelle) and featuring mostly unheard of comedians. The ensemble for Saturday Night is stacked with young talent, though LaBelle could break through as Michaels. 

The Seed of the Sacred Fig

• Cast: Misagh Zareh, Soheila Golestani, Mahsa Rostami, Setareh Maleki, Niousha Akhshi, Reza Akhlaghi, Shiva Ordooei, Amineh Arani
• Director: Mohammad Rasoulof

Another international entry that could play beyond the Best International Feature category is Mohammad Rasoulof's The Seed of the Sacred Fig. While the story of of judge who suspects one of his family members has stolen his service weapon amidst protests in Iran is intriguing in its own right, the backstory of the movie could also be a big story this year. Germany is actually submitting the movie for the Oscars, as that is where Rasoulof has lived since he fled Iran and its government in May. 

The Substance

• Release date: September 20
• Cast: Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley, Dennis Quaid, Hugo Diego Garcia, Joseph Balderrama, Oscar Lesage, Gore Abrams, Matthew Géczy
• Director: Coralie Fargeat

Movies described as "body horror" aren't often considered Oscar bait, but The Substance's raves (and the Academy's shift in tastes in recent years) may change that. Demi Moore is getting some of the best notices of her career for this performance, while the screenplay by Coarlie Fargeat received the Best Screenplay prize at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. It probably won't be a movie for everyone, but it could still draw Oscar's attention. 

We Live in Time

• Release date: October 11 (US); January 1, 2025 (UK)
• Cast: Andrew Garfield, Florence Pugh
• Director: John Crowley

We Live in Time could be the next great cinematic love story, as Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh go through the ups and downs of a relationship in the latest movie from Brooklyn director John Crowley. But will the Oscars fall in love with the movie? Garfield and Pugh are both popular with the Academy but are still searching for their first Oscar wins.

Wicked

• Release date: November 22
• Cast: Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Yeoh, Jonathan Bailey, Bowen Yang, Peter Dinklage
• Director: Jon M. Chu

The Broadway smash hit Wicked is coming to movie theaters, set to bring audiences back to the world of Oz, this time to learn about the backstories of witches Glinda and Elphaba (aka the Wicked Witch of the West). This is one of the most popular musicals of all time, so if the movie succeeds in its adaptation, then it could be primed for Oscar glory. The story is being split into two parts (with Wicked Part 2 coming in 2025), but that didn't stop Dune from raking up awards. 

The Wild Robot

• Cast: Lupita Nyong’o, Pedro Pascal, Catherine O'Hara, Bill Nighy, Kit Conner, Stephanie Hsu, Mark Hamill, Matt Berry, Ving Rhames
• Director: Chris Sanders

Only three animated movies have ever been nominated for Best Picture (Beauty and the Beast, Up and Toy Story 3), but The Wild Robot has the potential to change that. An adaptation of the acclaimed children's book from Peter Brown, Lupita Nyong'o leads an all-star voice cast in what looks to be a gorgeously animated movie. Can it make history as the next animated movie to become a major player at the Oscars? 

Without Blood

• Release date: TBD
• Cast: Salma Hayek, Demián Bichir, Juan Minujín
• Director: Angelia Jolie

In addition to starring in a potential Oscar contender this year, Angelina Jolie is directing one with her latest movie Without Blood. Based on Alessandro Baricco's novel of the same name, the story is described as a fable about the brutality of war and healing in its aftermath. It could be a big year for Jolie, and we'll know soon if either of her movies have a chance to make some noise on the awards circuit as they screen at some of then major fall film festivals.

For nearly 100 years, the Oscars have been handing out a trophy for what the Academy votes to be the Best Picture of the year. To date, we have 97 Best Picture winners, so what better thing to do than to rank our picks for the best of the bunch.

Before we start rattling them off though, a couple of things we have to acknowledge. First off, most of these movies are pretty darn good, so to say this was not an easy list to organize would be putting it mildly. Also, we used an unscientific method to rank them, but we considered historical relevance, cultural impact and, of course, personal preference as well.

We expect few people's rankings would look like ours, but that's the fun of things like these. Anyway, hope you enjoy What to Watch's ranking of the Oscar Best Picture winners to date.

97. Cavalcade (1933)

All due respect to the work of Noel Coward, whose play Cavalcade is based on, but this early Best Picture winner covering nearly 40 years of two British families, one wealthy, one working class, does not hold up. Especially when you consider that we've gotten things like Downton Abbey that have improved on the concept so much.

96. The Broadway Melody (1929)

The worst thing that I can say about The Broadway Melody, the second movie ever to win Best Picture, is that I can't remember a thing about it. With so many other classical musicals in that era with more iconic moments (be it any of the Astaire/Rogers movies or or 42nd Street's iconic line "you're going out a youngster, but you've got to come back a star"), it's too easy to overlook The Broadway Melody to rank it highly.

95. The Great Ziegfeld (1936)

Speaking of musicals that were iconic, Florenz Ziegfeld was responsible for his share thanks to a number of amazing dance sequences that became his calling card (the Ziegfeld Follies). Unfortunately, the movie about this life wasn't as grand or exciting to watch.

94. Gigi (1958)

Gigi has some classic songs and a lush Parisian look, but the story of a wealthy man's budding romantic relationship with a teenage girl (whether or not she's training to become a courtesan) does not age well.

93. Gentleman's Agreement (1947)

Hard not to love Gregory Peck, but this story of his journalist character posing as a Jew in order to learn about the discrimination is as blunt as a sledgehammer. It was director Elia Kazan's first Best Picture-winner; his second is going to be much higher on this list.

92. Driving Miss Daisy (1989)

Driving Miss Daisy is fine, but it should never have won in a year where Born on the Fourth of July, Dead Poets Society and Field of Dreams were nominated and, most egregiously, Do the Right Thing was not.

91. Tom Jones (1963)

The Oscars' love for British stars and movies really began in the 1960s. Of all of those imports, Tom Jones, where Albert Finney plays the titular Casanova-wannabe, is easily the least memorable.

90. Around the World in 80 Days (1956)

Jules Verne's classic story of Phileas Fogg's trek is fun and silly with a lot of great cameos (Shirley MacLaine, Marlene Dietrich, Frank Sinatra and Buster Keaton, just to name a few), but the story is actually pretty thin beyond that. It was also just redone in 2021 by the BBC with David Tenant.

89. The Greatest Show on Earth (1952)

Apologies to Steven Spielberg, who alluded to the influence The Greatest Show on Earth had on him as a young boy in The Fabelmans, but Cecil B. DeMille's circus epic doesn't do it for us. DeMille classically goes big, but it doesn't pay off as well as many of his other epics. It's also weird to see Jimmy Stewart in full clown makeup.

88. The English Patient (1996)

After watching The English Patient, I found myself relating more to Seinfeld's Elaine, who could not understand why everyone was so in love with this movie. Some strong performances from Ralph Fiennes, Kristin Scott Thomas and Juliette Binoche (who won her own Oscar for her work), but we weren't swooning for The English Patient in the end.

87. Crash (2004)

Crash is one of the most famous "bad" Best Picture winners. The movie is heavy-handed in how it handles many difficult situations around race certainly, but it could have been a lot worse without the strong performances from most of the ensemble.

86. Cimarron (1931)

There's a lot of interesting stuff at the center of Cimarron, telling the story a family who moves to an Oklahoma boom town at the end of the 19th century. This just may be an example where the gap from when it was made until now see it lose some of its luster.

85. Oliver! (1968)

Oliver! has a weird place in Oscar history. It is the only G-rated movie to win Best Picture. The movie itself is a fun musical, but it does stick out like a sore thumb amongst its fellow winners.

84. Out of Africa (1985)

Meryl Streep and Robert Redford. An exotic location. A passionate love affair. Meh. I can understand why the Academy got swept up in Out of Africa, but it struggles to hold up against many of their other picks.

83. An American in Paris (1951)

Putting An American in Paris so low may be a reaction to the fact that the Academy not only didn't award Gene Kelly's next and almost unquestionably superior musical Singin' in the Rain Best Picture, it wasn't even nominated! Paris has great Kelly dances and George Gershwin music, so it's an enjoyable watch. But Singin' in the Rain it is not.

82. You Can't Take It With You (1938)

Don't feel bad for Frank Capra, he's got another Best Picture winner coming much further down the list. You Can't Take It With You is a charming movie, though it can feel like a sugar rush at times. But it is the first pairing of Capra with Jimmy Stewart, so that forever goes into the plus column.

81. All the King's Men (1949) 

Broderick Crawford's performance as a Louisiana politician who rises up the ranks only to see him fall just as spectacularly because of corruption is the strongest thing about All the King's Men. That is its blessing and its curse.

80. The Last Emperor (1987)

Bernardo Bertolucci's Oscar winner is absolutely stunning to look at; in addition to Best Picture, its nine total Oscars included Best cinematography, Best Costume Design and Best Art Direction-Set Direction. While there's a lot to ground to cover in telling the story of China's last emperor before it became a Communist nation, the two hour and 43 minute runtime feels like it.

79. Mrs. Miniver (1942)

Mrs. Miniver features a very good Greer Garson performance and is an impeccably made movie as director William Wyler was accustomed to doing. But when it comes to other movies that detail the impact of World War II, Mrs. Miniver takes a back seat to many.

78. How Green Was My Valley (1941)

John Ford has more Best Director Oscars than anyone else in history, but this is his lone win for Best Picture. It's a powerful story of a Welsh family at the turn of the century hoping to leave a better life for future generations, but like many movies on this list, is overshadowed by who it beat. In this case, Orson Wells' Citizen Kane.

77. A Man for All Seasons (1966)

Palace intrigue has always made for fascinating movies, and A Man for All Seasons is a good example of that, as Paul Scofield's Sir Thomas Moore (for which he won Best Actor) is fantastic standing up to Henry VIII as he attempts to defy the church and divorce in a movie that is more enthralling to watch than that may sound.

76. Ordinary People (1980)

Ordinary People was the directing debut for Robert Redford, and he led off with an emotional gut punch of a movie about a family broken after the death of their eldest child. It's a good movie that I'd be fine never watching again. Though have to wonder how Donald Sutherland didn't get a nomination for Supporting Actor.

75. American Beauty (1999)

The Academy clearly liked American Beauty quite a lot and it had a pretty good reputation for a few years after that, but its win has definitely diminished (even before the Kevin Spacey allegations). It's still a good watch, but not the landmark movie it was being boasted as early in its run.

74. Million Dollar Baby (2004)

Million Dollar Baby got Morgan Freeman his Oscar, features a great Hilary Swank (earning her second Oscar) and it's one of the final great Clint Eastwood performances. The downer ending certainly impacts where it falls on the list.

73. Hamlet (1948)

Laurence Olivier directs and gives one of the best on-screen Shakespearian performances in arguably Shakespeare's best play. Olivier would do that a few times throughout his acting career (personally prefer Henry V probably). Hard to think there's been a better straight adaptation of Hamlet on screen though.

72. The Shape of Water (2017)

Guillermo del Toro's love letter to The Creature of the Black Lagoon is more than just the movie where Sally Hawkins does it with a fish. It's actually quite a lovely story of outcasts. Still, it seems destined to be one of those movies where you go, "oh yeah, that did win Best Picture."

71. Green Book (2018)

Green Book got hit with a lot of stuff leading up to and after it took home Best Picture. A lot of the criticism of how it depicts the relationship between Tony Lip (Viggo Mortensen) and Dr. Donald Shirley (Mahershala Ali) is fair, but solely in the terms of the movie, the relationship works because of the two great performances by Mortensen and Ali.

70. Gandhi (1982)

One of the most iconic figures of the 20th century gets an epic biopic and an brilliant performance by Ben Kingsley. It can feel a bit stodgy at times though, which can make it feel like all of its 191 minutes.

69. My Fair Lady (1964)

Audrey Hepburn is delightful as Eliza Doolittle, the cockney flower girl molded into a lady of sophistication by Rex Harrison's Henry Higgins. It's one of the great musicals (even if Harrison talk-sings his way through it).

68. Mutiny on the Bounty (1935)

The spiritual duel between Clark Gable's Fletcher Christian and Charles Laughton's Captain Bligh is the highlight of Mutiny on the Bounty, making for a riveting experience at sea despite the lack of sea battles.

67. Slumdog Millionaire (2008)

Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire introduced us to Dev Patel, Frieda Pinto and, with the help of the closing credit dance number, hopefully helped expand the watching of Bollywood and other movies from India. But it's also has a winning spirit that translated to the Oscars.

66. The French Connection (1971)

An iconic Gene Hackman performance as Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle and a chase sequence on the streets below New York's train system headline the reasons that you should check out The French Connection when you can.

65. The Artist (2011)

Only the second silent movie to win Best Picture, that novelty very likely helped push The Artist over the finish line. But beyond that it is a funny and touching story of a former star seeing his career crumble, with a brilliant performance by Jean Dujardin (and Uggie the dog).

64. Chicago (2002)

Chicago's win for Best Picture helped make the musical a viable option in 21st century Hollywood. So for that, thank you to Renée Zellweger, Catherine Zeta Jones, Richard Gere, Queen Latifah, John C. Reilly and Rob Marshall.

63. From Here to Eternity (1953)

Even if you haven't seen From Here to Eternity, you're probably familiar with its most iconic image — Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr kissing on the beach as waves wash over them. That's not the whole movie though, as Montgomery Clift, Frank Sinatra and Donna Reed tell varying stories about US soldiers at Pearl Harbor leading up to the Japanese attack.

62. Platoon (1986)

Oliver Stone's Vietnam epic looks to dive into the duality of men thrust into war, symbolized by the fight between Tom Berenger and Willem Dafoe's characters over Charlie Sheen's soul. It mostly works, but if forced to pick a Oliver Stone Vietnam movie, I'd go for Born on the Fourth of July over this one.

61. Argo (2012)

Sure, Hollywood congratulating itself in an instance where its glitz and glamour helped save the day as tensions were high in the Cold War may seem pretty cheesy, but Argo is a taut, entertaining thriller. Still curious how Ben Affleck wasn't nominated for Best Director.

60. Nomadland (2020)

Nomadland is a poetic journey of a woman finding herself later in life and on the road. Chloe Zhao beautifully captured this and Frances McDormand once again showed why she's one of our greatest actors today. It was a bonus that the gorgeous backdrops helped us pretend to escape during the first year of the pandemic.

59. A Beautiful Mind (2001)

Russell Crowe didn't pull off the back-to-back Oscar wins here for Best Actor, but he is still great in A Beautiful Mind, as is his supporting group led by Jennifer Connelly. It may have been a mea culpa from the Academy for not picking Ron Howard's Apollo 13 a few years prior, but it's a solid win on its own.

58. Grand Hotel (1932)

Grand Hotel has the fun distinction of being the only Best Picture winner to not receive any other nominations. Surprising that no one from the ensemble could snag a nomination (particularly Greta Garbo), but the movie remains a compelling drama.

57. Forrest Gump (1994)

There definitely is some Forrest Gump fatigue because it has played on TV so much, but even with that it's hard not to watch it for a good 10 to 15 minutes at least if you stumble upon it. The movie just works thanks to Hanks and company (but maybe we should all stop trying to do the Forrest Gump accent; "Lieutenant Dan!")

56. Rain Man (1988)

Somewhat like Forrest Gump, people definitely have tried to impersonate Dustin Hoffman's Raymond Babbitt too much. Regardless, Hoffman and Tom Cruise are great together in this story of a man learning to love and care for his autistic brother.

55. Kramer vs Kramer (1979)

Back-to-back emotional Dustin Hoffman movies. This time he plays a dad who has to learn how to care for his son after his wife, played by Meryl Streep, abandons them. If you ever want to see Grade-A acting, watch the restaurant scene between Hoffman and Streep.

54. Braveheart (1995)

Braveheart is by no means historically accurate (the fact they wouldn't have worn kilts is probably the smallest issue), but despite that, the Scottish-set epic hits just about everything you would want it to do in terms of action, scope and even a dash of romance.

53. Chariots of Fire (1981)

For anyone who has ever gone running on the beach, there's a good chance the Oscar-winning Chariots of Fire score by the late Vangelis played in their head. But Chariots of Fire is a fascinating story of what drives its two central characters, Harold Abrahams and Eric Liddell, as they go for Olympic glory.

52. Going My Way (1944)

Sometimes a movie just hits all the right notes despite a simple, straightforward story. That's the case with Going My Way, which sees two priests, played by Bing Crosby and Barry Fitzgerald, clash at first but soon become good friends. It nearly won the Oscar big five (Picture, Director, Lead Actor, Lead Actress and Screenplay), not qualifying because they didn't have a leading lady. Also have to mention, Fitzgerald is the only person in Oscar history to be nominated for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor for the same performance (he won for the latter).

51. CODA (2021)

The first (and so far only) movie to be released by a streaming service to win Best Picture, the heartwarming CODA founds its audience, shining a light on the deaf community in a new way, further highlighted by the Oscar win for Troy Kotsur.

50. The Life of Emile Zola (1937)

If a black-and-white biopic of French writer Emile Zola may not strike you as overly compelling, then you clearly haven't seen Paul Muni's performance, which magnificently jolts this movie to life.

49. Anora (2024)

Anora, made for just $6 million, beat studio behemoths like Dune: Part Two and Wicked, for the top prize, while picking up four other trophies (Best Actress, Best Director, Best Editing and Best Original Screenplay) for one of the more impressive hauls for a movie in recent memory (it won five of its six nominations). Sean Baker's Cinderella-like tale of a sex worker whose spur of the moment marriage to the son of a Russian oligarch comes crashing down feels like a movie that would have fit in the 1970s era of Hollywood, which is a compliment in my books and makes it a solid Best Picture winner.

48. The Lost Weekend (1945)

A Billy Wilder movie before he made the turn to comedy (think Sunset Blvd., not Some Like It Hot), The Lost Weekend is a gripping portrayal of a man suffering from alcoholism, with a stirring performance from Ray Milland.

47. Birdman (2014)

The mid 2010s belonged to Alejando G. Inarritu at the Oscars, as he won consecutive Best Director prizes, with his first in that stretch, Birdman, also taking home Best Picture. While spectacularly acted (particularly by Michael Keaton), Inarritu is in full control of this wacky, existential movie that was crafted to look like it was done all in one shot.

46. The King's Speech (2010) 

This next stretch of movies (46-44) all are looked down upon because of the movies they beat for Best Picture, but we should acknowledge they are pretty darn good on their own right. While perhaps a bit formulaic and not as zeitgeisty as The Social Network, The King's Speech is an uplifting movie that's hard not to enjoy, with a fantastic Colin Firth and supporting turns from Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter.

45. Dances With Wolves (1990)

Another time when the Oscar went for the "safe" pick over the edgy movie (in this case Martin Scorsese's Goodfellas), Kevin Costner's epic western Dances With Wolves is still a powerful movie worthy of its praise. Sure it's long, but it effectively shows the beauty that was the untamed west and the tragedy of its loss.

44. Shakespeare in Love (1998)

Besting Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan (though Spielberg won Best Director), this is often cited as an example of the Oscar campaigning of powerful producers swaying a race in a different direction, but Shakespeare in Love is a delightfully fun movie that shouldn't be dismissed.

43. Spotlight (2015)

Spotlight belongs right up there with All the President's Men as one of the greatest movies about the power and importance of journalism in Hollywood history. Though we know how things go, it is riveting to see how these reporters built and told this important story, with big credit to its ensemble and its Oscar-winning screenplay.

42. Amadeus (1984)

Who knew the life of Mozart and the world of classical music could be so entertaining? OK, Amadeus has been said to stretch the truth of things a good bit, but Milos Forman's drama of the music legend is as big and operatic as the famed composer's work, which makes for a fantastic watch.

41. Ben-Hur (1959)

Ben-Hur is tied with two other movies we have yet to mention that won an Oscar-record 11 trophies. William Wyler's biblical epic certainly is grand from top to bottom, highlighted by its chariot race sequence that is an incredible watch to this day. Ben-Hur has been told multiple times (before and after), but this Oscar-winner is still the definitive one.

40. In the Heat of the Night (1967)

What a year 1967 was, but In the Heat of the Night came out on top. Not only is the movie a satisfying mystery with a pair of great central performances from Rod Steiger and Sidney Poitier, it features many stand-up and cheer moments as Poitier's Virgil Tibbs fights back against racism in the southern town where the story is set.

39. The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957)

David Lean's World War II epic about a group of British POWs and their strong-willed commander, played by Alec Guinness, at a Japanese camp is a great depiction of the moral quandary of war. The fact that it ends with an incredible sequence of a train crash is just icing on the cake.

38. Gladiator (2000)

Are you not entertained! It's hard not to be by Gladiator, which took the top prize because it is more than just an action film with a bunch of cool fights in the Colosseum. Ridley Scott made a movie that not only had the spectacle of old Hollywood epics (with the advantage of modern technology), but is an engrossing story of one man's quest for revenge so he can find peace.

37. Terms of Endearment (1983) 

Another winner that requires plenty of Kleenex, Terms of Endearment is the pinnacle of family movies destined to make you tear up. Shirley MacLaine and Debra Winger each get their moments in this James L. Brooks movie that nearly was another example of the Oscar big five; it won its five Oscars, but Jack Nicholson won for Supporting not Lead Actor.

36. The Sting (1973)

While the tandem of Paul Newman and Robert Redford may be better known for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, that didn't win Best Picture. But The Sting is no slouch for the pair, as their team of con artists pulling off a major grift is a blast to watch. For younger audiences less familiar with it, think Ocean's 11 but set in the 1920s.

35. Patton (1970)

Patton is almost more famous for star George C. Scott not accepting his much deserved Oscar for Best Actor (he didn't believe in competition among actors). Scott is unquestionable the driving force behind Patton, but it also had a great script from a pre-Godfather Francis Ford Coppola.

34. Everything Everywhere All at Once

It's hard to accurately judge recent winners in the full context of Oscar history, but Everything Everywhere All at Once's win does feel significant. A movie with hot dog fingers, a bagel that can destroy the world and a Ratatouille-inspired raccoon won Best Picture and it is glorious. Everything Everywhere All at Once is as wacky as it is emotionally satisfying, with its central message being about the importance of family and the love they have for each other. This movie would probably not have been an Oscar contender, let alone a winner, if it had come out even 10 years earlier, but its victory help signifies an Academy that is willing to go wonderfully strange on occasion.

33. Unforgiven (1992)

Despite Hollywood's love of the genre, the western doesn't have a great track record with Best Picture. Unforgiven is probably the most traditional western to win the top award, but even that comes by flipping expectations as a perhaps never-better Clint Eastwood plays an assassin and is the defacto hero, while Gene Hackman's sheriff is the movie's primary villain. The switch makes for quite a compelling movie.

32. 12 Years a Slave (2013)

Steven McQueen does not make easy movies to watch and 12 Years a Slave is (accurately) brutal in its depiction of slavery. But all that torment makes the story of Solomon Northup that much more uplifting for his resolve and eventual freedom. Also have to mention Lupita Nyong'o's historically great Hollywood debut in the movie.

31. All Quiet on the Western Front (1930)

2022's All Quiet on the Western Front may be the better version of this anti-war story, but that does not mean that the original Best Picture-winning version should be overlooked. While not able to show the destruction of war as much, 1930's All Quiet on the Western Front still effectively displays the toll of war on its characters.

30. The Departed (2006)

Martin Scorsese finally got his Oscar glory with The Departed (for Director as well as Picture). Adapted from the Hong Kong movie Internal Affairs, this story of rats inside the police and criminal underworld is as thrilling as anything in Scorsese's filmography, with a shocking ending that still satisfies no matter how many times you watch it.

29. The Sound of Music (1965)

Musicals won four of the Best Picture trophies in the 1960s, and though we have one more ranked ahead of the Sound of Music, the Julie Andrews movie may be the most iconic of the bunch. Just hear a few bars of "My Favorite Things," "Do-Re-Mi" and "I Have Confidence" and try to not start singing along.

28. Rebecca (1940)

Alfred Hitchcock's only Oscar winner (shocking as that is) may not have the same recognition of Psycho, Rear Window, North by Northwest or Vertigo, but it is a gothic treat that once again proves few directors in history could craft a suspenseful tale like Hitchcock.

27. Annie Hall (1977)

Annie Hall remains one the best romantic comedies of all time, as funny as it is heartbreaking. While it can be tough to deal with the Woody Allen equation (that's a separate conversation about separating art from artist), at the very least we have Diane Keaton, who gives perhaps her most iconic performance as the titular Annie.

26. Wings (1927)

Don't sleep on the very first Best Picture winner. Wings is fantastic and quite the impressive feat for the early days of cinema, telling the story of a World War I fighter pilots who contend for the heart of the same woman. We also must mention that while Wings is regarded as the first Best Picture winner, there was actually a second movie to take home a Best Picture trophy. The masterful Sunrise: A Tale of Two Humans won the first and only Best Picture, Unique and Artistic Production, as that award was removed after the first Academy Awards.

25. Midnight Cowboy (1969)

The only X-rated movie to win Best Picture, by today's standards Midnight Cowboy may not seem as risque, but it is still one of the boldest Best Picture winners in history. Following a young Texan (Jon Voight) who travels to New York to make his fortune as a male prostitute and the native New Yorker who becomes his partner (Dustin Hoffman), at its heart Midnight Cowboy is an incredible story of friendship between these two outsiders.

24. The Hurt Locker (2009)

Every major US war of the 20th century has at least one Best Picture winner, The Hurt Locker does that for the wars in the Middle East. Kathryn Bigelow (the first woman to win Best Director) made a pitch perfect war story, as the bomb defusing team, led by Jeremy Renner, deal with IEDs and the complicated nature of the conflict.

23. The Deer Hunter (1978)

Michael Cimino's Vietnam epic doesn't focus that much on the battlefield, instead The Deer Hunter emphasis the psychological impact of the war on those involved in it. With a masterclass of acting from Robert DeNiro, Meryl Streep, Christopher Walken and more, The Deer Hunter is a gut punch of a movie in the best way possible.

22. No Country for Old Men (2007)

The Coen brothers are probably most loved for their offbeat comedies like Raising Arizona, The Big Lebowski and O Brother, Where Art Thou, but they are just as adept at the bone-chilling thriller, as evidenced by No Country for Old Men, a near perfect movie with a legendary performance from Javier Bardem as its centerpiece.

21. Marty (1955)

If you're someone who thinks movies are to long, perhaps you'll enjoy the shortest Best Picture winner of all time (coming in at 90 minutes). Marty is more than that though, it is a beautiful story of the titular character (played by Ernest Borgnine) learning to accept himself and the idea that love is possible for him. It's not what you may typically think of as a Best Picture-winning movie, but it definitely earned it.

20. Gone with the Wind (1939)

The quintessential, sweeping Hollywood epic in the first half of Hollywood's history. Gone with the Wind of course has its problems in its depiction of its Black characters (though Hattie McDaniel's performance as Mammy saw her become the first Black actor to win an Oscar), but its grandeur makes it iconic and something worth watching.

19. All About Eve (1950)

All About Eve shares the record of movies with the most Oscar nominations at 14. While it took home less than half of those, six, it won the big one, Best Picture (its haul was impacted since it had five acting nominations, including two each in Actress and Supporting Actress). This story of rivalry in the theater world is compelling, with a crackling script and top-of-her-game Bette Davis.

18. Oppenheimer (2023)

Christopher Nolan's historical epic Oppenheimer, about the making of the atomic bomb, immediately shoots into the upper echelon of Best Picture winners. Not only is it an impeccably made and acted movie telling a story that impacts everyone, but the movie was one of the biggest hits to earn Hollywood's top prize as well. And despite feeling like a runaway victor with seven total Oscars, no one can say its win easy, as it went up against one of the better Oscar fields of the 21st century to date. This one could easily rise in the rankings in the next few years.

17. The Godfather Part II (1974)

The Godfather Part II's win for Best Picture is historic as it was the first sequel to ever win the top prize and the only one to do so after its previous movie also had. And it absolutely deserved it, as the continuation of the Corleone saga is another masterwork. But, because we come out for the original in the Godfather vs Godfather Part II debate, this is where we're slotting Part II.

16. The Apartment (1960)

We spoke how Billy Wilder's career can be divided in half between his more dramatic work and his comedic ones, but The Apartment is a near perfect mix of both. Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine are brilliant in this romantic comedy, but it has a touch of sadness as their characters are torn up by their love situations. The movie got its happy ending though, both on screen and with its place in Oscar history.

15. Lawrence of Arabia (1962)

After making a World War II epic, David Lean tackled World War I with Lawrence of Arabia, managing to top himself with the epic story of T.E. Lawrence, brilliantly played by Peter O'Toole in his first ever screen role. As big as the desert and battle sequences in Lawrence of Arabia are, it is as deep and satisfying as a character study of Lawrence, proving Lean and O'Toole as an iconic pairing.

14. Titanic (1997)

Though it's lost its title as the biggest box office movie of all time, Titanic remains one of the great Best Picture wins. The love story is iconic thanks to Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, while Cameron showed his impeccable craftsmanship with the sinking sequence. It has just about everything you could want in a movie and a Best Picture winner.

13. Parasite (2019)

The historical impact of being the first (and thus far only) movie not in English to win Best Picture makes Parasite an iconic winner, but it is also a brilliant thriller and social commentary — funny, dark and twisted — with its central family trying to con their way into a better life.

12. Schindler's List (1993)

Schindler's List is the kind of movie you may only ever want to watch once, as Spielberg depicts the horrors of the Holocaust but also one of its heroes in Oskar Schindler. That being said, it is a must watch for its story but also seeing Spielberg put his talents to use beyond the popcorn flick (not to belittle his classic work in that department). The fact that he had Schindler's List and Jurassic Park in the same year is incredible.

11. Rocky (1976)

Who doesn't love an underdog story? Rocky is perhaps the greatest underdog story ever put to film. Though the franchise grew to six total Rocky movies and then three Creed spinoff movies, the original Rocky is a grounded, inspiring story of giving it your all and defining what winning means to you. Rocky may have lost the fight to Apollo, but the movie is one of the best winners in Oscar history.

10. Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (2003) 

Any one of the Lord of the Rings movies could have (and perhaps should have) won Best Picture, but the Academy finally gave the fantasy epic its due with the Return of the King win, which many view as an acknowledgement of the whole franchise. It is tied with the most Oscar wins of all time at 11 (with Ben-Hur and Titanic) and is arguably the greatest trilogy of all time.

9. Moonlight (2016)

Moonlight's win will forever be associated with the mistake of La La Land being announced as Best Picture due to a gaff with the envelopes, but that in no way should diminish the movie. Moonlight is a masterpiece from Barry Jenkins, a powerful story of love and self acceptance, beautifully told in image, words and performances.

8. West Side Story (1961) 

The best movie musical of all time was definitely going to get a slot in the top 10. While it takes its inspiration from Romeo & Juliet, West Side Story has earned legendary status of its own thanks to its music (with lyrics from the late, great Stephen Sondheim), choreography and iconic work in front of and behind the camera. As great as Steven Spielberg's West Side Story was, the original is still the best.

7. On the Waterfront (1954)

Marlon Brando's Terry Malloy could have been a contender, but On the Waterfront is definitely one of the best winners in Oscar history (forgive us, couldn't resist). The on-screen legend of Brando was cemented with his performance, while Kazan nails the riveting story and the social commentary, unlike in his other Best Picture winner, Gentleman's Agreement.

6. The Best Years of Our Lives (1946)

Though it never actually depicts any battles, The Best Years of Our Lives is probably the greatest World War II movie ever made. It instead follows three soldiers as they try to adjust to life back home following the war, struggling both mentally and physically. It is really ahead of its time with its depiction of post-war life for soldiers, though director William Wyler likely helped out a lot with that after he served as part of filmmaking units during the war.

5. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975)

One of three movies to win the Oscar big five (Picture, Director, Actor, Actress and Screenplay) One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is an incredible movie that follows R.P. McMurphy as he does a dangerous dance with the quietly villainous Nurse Ratchet in a mental asylum. One Flew solidified Jack Nicholson as one of the great actors of his (or possibly any) generation, with Louise Fletcher going toe-to-toe with him, all in the service of a movie that celebrates the individual spirit.

4. The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

Not only is The Silence of the Lambs another one of the movies to win the big five Oscars, it is arguably the closest thing to a horror movie that has won Best Picture. Jonathan Demme crafts the perfect thriller, with iconic performances from Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins (winning Best Actor with just 16 minutes of screen time). All of this makes it unique and one of the best winners in Academy history.

3. The Godfather (1972)

The Godfather's win is less about the number of trophies that it won, because actually it's win total (three) was dwarfed by Cabaret's eight Oscars, but despite that the Academy got it right and gave Best Picture to what is one of the best movies ever made. We can complain a lot that the Oscars don't line up with what actually becomes the most memorable movie from a given year, but in this instance they absolutely did.

2. Casablanca (1943)

Casablanca is a miracle. If you do any research about the movie's production you know from the script to the off-screen relationship between Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, the movie could has just as easily been a dud. But Michael Curtiz and all overcame that and created what in this humble writer's opinion is the greatest movie of all time. So why is it number two?

1. It Happened One Night (1934)

Because when we're talking about Oscar Best Picture winners, the top spot should go to the original movie to win the big five, Frank Capra's It Happened One Night. The Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert-led romantic comedy set the blueprint for so much to come after it (it even inspired Bugs Bunny's love of carrots). But plain and simple, it is an incredibly brilliant love story that remains a blast to watch 90 years after it was made.

How to watch the Oscars 2024 red carpet

ABC will be dedicating much of its Sunday schedule to Oscars-related programming, kicking off with the pre-show Countdown to Oscars: On the Red Carpet Live from 1pm to 4pm Eastern, hosted by ABC News Live Prime anchor Linsey Davis and Good Morning America weekend co-anchor Whit Johnson. 

The network's live red-carpet coverage will follow at 6:30pm ET on ABC, with The Oscars Red Carpet Show hosted by Vanessa Hudgens and Julianne Hough. While Hough is a newcomer to the program, this is Hudgens' third consecutive year hosting the official Oscars pre-show. Along with a "multiview experience" of the red-carpet arrivals in all of their glamorous glory, the special will feature interviews with Oscar nominees, presenters and performers. (Barbie's Billie Eilish and Finneas, as well as Ryan Gosling, are just a few of the folks set to take the stage for the "Best Original Song" musical numbers.) 

And, as is tradition, E! will have its own programming dedicated to the Oscars red carpet on March 10: E!'s Brunch at the Oscars kicks off at 2pm Eastern with co-hosts Justin Sylvester, Zanna Roberts Rassi and Nikki Garcia. The pre-show will delve into this year's top Oscar races, fashion forecasts, behind-the-scenes intel and more. 

Then, the Live From E!: The Oscars show will follow at 4pm ET. Host Laverne Cox will be joined by panelists Roberts Rassi, Zuri Hall, comedian Heather McMahan and designer Christian Siriano to offer up exclusive interviews and commentary on all of the celebrity looks coming down the carpet. 

"This is heavier than I expected," or something to that effect, is a common refrain from first-time winners of the Oscar when they get their hands on the iconic award. Now we're not trying to weight shame the Oscar statuette, which is being handed out for the 96th time at the 2024 Oscars on Sunday, March 10, but it is a question many of us wonder about — just how much does an Oscar weigh?

That's just one of the many popular questions movie fans have for the trophy that is seen as one of the highest honors in the industry. So we thought we would take the time to answer some of these questions about the award that has been handed out for nearly a century, including how it got its name and if it is really made out of gold.

With this info, you can impress your friends when you watch the Oscars.

How much does an Oscar weigh?

According to the official Oscars website, the Oscar statuette weighs 8.5 pounds and is 13.5 inches tall.

If you're curious for some comparison, the World Health Organization reported in 2023 that the average weight of a newborn baby is just a little over 7 pounds. So, yes an Oscar is heavier than a newborn baby! Well, unless you have an enormous baby that is!!

Is an Oscar made out of gold?

Like many of the movies that it honors, the look of an Oscar is a bit of movie magic as it is not actually made of gold, at least not entirely. Instead, the statuettes are solid bronze and then plated in 24-karat gold, again per the Oscars website.

However, for a three-year period during World War Two, the process changed. A metal shortage saw the Oscars be made out of painted plaster. Once the war was over, the Academy allowed those who had won the plaster trophies to exchange them for gold-plated metal versions.

Who makes the Oscar statuette?

Since 2015, the Academy has enlisted UAP Polich Tallix to make the Oscar statuette. As the New York-based company shares on its website, it combined the original design of the trophy from 1928 with what was handed out in 2015 to create the current design for the Oscar statuette, which of course consists of the iconic man holding a sword and standing on a film reel that features five spokes representing the five original branches of the Academy: actors, director, producers, technicians and writers.

UAP says that it takes about three months to make 50 statuettes. However, with the official results not being known until the envelopes are opened, the Academy always makes sure it has more than enough Oscars for all potential winners, including in the event of a tie.

But if you want to go back even further, the original designer of the Oscar statuette in the 1920s was Cedric Gibbons, the chief art director at MGM, while Los Angeles sculptor George Stanley was tasked with making the first batch of statuettes.

Why is it called an Oscar?

While we don't typically think twice about the trophy being called an Oscar, that is actually just the nickname for the award. The official name is the Academy Award of Merit. So why did we start calling the award an Oscar?

Per the Oscar website, there isn't a definitive answer to that question, but the popular legend is that when Academy librarian Margaret Herrick saw the statuette for the first time she said it reminded her of her Uncle Oscar. By 1934 the nickname had been heard enough that a columnist described it as such when Katharine Hepburn won her first Academy Award. The Academy officially adopted the Oscar nickname in 1939.

How many Oscars have been handed out?

Over the first 95 years of the Oscars, the Academy has handed out 3,140 Oscar statuettes. If we average that out to how many people earn Oscar trophies every year, it would be about 33.

At this year's Oscars, the likes of Oppenheimer, Barbie, Poor Things, Killers of the Flower Moon, The Holdovers and more are vying for Oscars in 23 categories, so at least that many (almost certainly more) will be added to the total.

Can you sell an Oscar?

Once someone wins an Oscar, they can display it or take it where they so choose (including to In and Out), but one thing they cannot do is sell it; at least not without offering it to the Academy first.

Per the official regulations of the Academy: "Award winners shall not sell or otherwise dispose of the Oscar statuette, nor permit it to be sold or disposed of by operation of law, without first offering to sell it to the Academy for the sum of $1.00." This also applies to the children/family members of Oscar winners who inherit the award or anyone else that may come into possession of it by gift or bequest.

This rule was the result of a 2015 court ruling, so it is still a relatively new thing. That is why you may have heard stories about Steven Spielberg buying an Oscar Bette Davis won or others like it.

If we're going by the letter of the rule, should the Academy opt not to buy back an Oscar offered to them through this process, then an individual could theoretically sell an Oscar. But considering it only costs the Academy a $1 and they went to court to solidify that right, it's incredibly unlikely you'll be seeing an Oscar available to buy online anytime soon.

One of the biggest nights in on the movie-lovers' calendar each year is the Academy Awards, popularly known as the Oscars, and the Academy is calling lights, camera and action on this year's awards ceremony on Sunday, March 10. 

The 2024 Oscars celebrates movies that came out in 2023, with the likes of Oppenheimer, Poor Things and Flowers of the Killer Moon are expected to scoop up loads of awards — though studious Oscar watchers are familiar with upset wins.

How to watch the 2024 Oscars in the UK

The 2024 Oscars airing earlier than normal is great news in the UK, given how late the ceremony starts, but you're still going to be up until the early hours watching it. The ceremony is being broadcast on Sunday, March 10, from 10:15 pm until 2:35 am the next morning, so we'd recommend taking the Monday off work! While that's when the broadcast begins, the ceremony itself starts at 11 pm.

The show will be aired live on ITV1, so you can use it on your TV or using ITVX if you'd rather watch it online on a computer or your phone. We've got a guide on how to watch live TV using ITVX here.

Both options are, of course, free to license fee payers.

How to watch the 2024 Oscars in Australia

The 2024 Oscars fall at a fairly reasonable hour in Australia: the ceremony is set to begin at 11 am on Monday, March 11, and end around 1:30 pm.

You can watch a live stream of the event for free online by using the streaming service 7Plus, or using your TV on Channel 7. 

How to watch the 2024 Oscars everywhere else

The Oscars will be broadcasting around the world, with the Academy sharing the exact place where viewers can watch it in various countries right here.

However, if you're going to be away from your normal TV setup but still want to watch the Oscars, you might run into some problems. Thankfully, you can solve this exact issue with a Virtual Private Network (VPN).

The 2024 Oscar season is chalk full of stars, including Ryan Gosling, Margot Robbie, Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Robert De Niro, Lily Gladstone, Jeffrey Wright and Da'Vine Joy Randolph. But one of the breakout stars has been Messi, the talented dog that appears in the Best Picture-nominee Anatomy of a Fall.

In the intense court-room drama, Messi plays Snoop, the dog that belongs to Daniel (Milo Machado-Graner), the son of the couple at the center of a complex trial trying to determine if the wife, Sandra (Sandra Hüller), killed her husband or if it was suicide. In addition to being a loyal companion for Daniel, Snoop plays a key role in helping shape the outcome of the case, but one we won't spoil here.

Messi's performance was so memorable that it received the Palm Dog award at the Cannes Film Festival, which is handed out annually for the best performance by a canine. While the Oscars don't have a similar category, Messi has been along for the ride as Anatomy of a Fall has received five Oscar nominations. That included an appearance at the Oscar nominees luncheon, where he was a hit.

In addition to Gosling, Messi met America Ferrera, Billie Eilish and Bradley Cooper (perhaps making connections for a future big screen appearance). He handled it like a pro according to his trainer, Laura Martin, who took part in a press conference with Messi that What to Watch attended, happily accepting all the hugs and attention that came his way. Messi has been getting recognized outside Hollywood events like this as well, with some at the Los Angeles airport recognizing him; but Messi isn't letting it all go to his head, said Martin.

The Academy has also been sure to play up on the internet's love for good boys like Messi, featuring him prominently in a few of their Instagram posts.

The success is a long-time coming for Messi, as well as Martin. Messi was one of the first dogs that Martin has trained for TV and movies. She initially got him when a neighbor's dog had a litter, joking he was the "ugliest dog" of the bunch, but that his vibe attracted her. Now 8 years old, Anatomy of a Fall is actually the first movie that Messi has appeared in, after many auditions and a few near misses, according to Martin. She said though that since Anatomy of a Fall Messi is getting calls for roles and has already worked on a French TV series and has another French show potentially lined up as well.

Here are some more quick facts about Messi that we learned during the press conference:

• His name stems from a French tradition where pet names are meant to start with a different letter based on the year. It was M when Messi was born, with Martin's children coming up with it.
• Messi and Martin did two months of preparation for Anatomy of Fall
• Messi loves playing in fields and with a ball
• Doesn't require a collar or leash on walks
• Is afraid of the vacuum cleaner
• Generally a scene with Messi takes about an hour and around 10 takes
• Sandra Hüller, who had her own dog in her other 2023 movie The Zone of Interest, said Messi was better behaved on set

While it's still to be determined, there is hope that Messi will come back to Los Angeles for the Oscars on March 10.

When it comes to checking off Oscar-nominated movies on your must-watch list, it’s easy to cross off the Best Picture nominees or even nominated international movies (though check out the sidebar for how to watch some of the harder-to-find movies). Knight of Fortune is from Denmark and is about Karl (Leif Andrée), whose encounter with a stranger helps him open up about his grief.

In a nondescript Los Angeles warehouse, a team of devoted craftspeople help maintain more than 80,000 student musical instruments and are dedicated to offering more than just music to LA schoolchildren in the short doc The Last Repair Shop.

Nǎi Nai and Wài Pó

Director Sean Wang (who was behind the 2024 Sundance movie Didi) filmed a love letter to his two grandmothers, Nǎi Nai and Wài Pó, who spend their twilight years dancing, stretching and farting their sorrows away.

Ninety-Five Senses

Featuring the voice work of Tim Blake Nelson, Ninety-Five Senses is an ode to the body's five senses from a character who has only a little time left to enjoy them. This is one of only two of the Best Animated Short nominees available to watch online.

Using a unique animation style that employs clothes in telling its story, Our Uniform has a young woman who grew up in Iran recount what it was like with the imposed dress code when they went to school.

How to watch Oscar-nominated shorts in movie theaters

While you can watch 12 of the 15 Oscar-nominated shorts online, you can see the full slate of nominees in select movie theaters right now in the US and Canada. 

As it has for many years, Shorts TV is putting together this special presentation of the Oscar-nominated movies. This year, it is breaking up the movies by their Oscar categories, with the Animated Shorts, Documentary Shorts and Live Action shorts all getting their own showing. The Animated Shorts showing is 80 minutes long and features two other short films that made the Oscars shortlist for the category; Documentary Shorts is two hours 21 minutes; and Live Action shorts is two hours 20 minutes.

You can find showtimes and purchase tickets directly through Shorts TV.

UK and other international audiences are also going to be able to watch the Oscar-nominated shorts, but when and in how many theaters differs by country. In the case of the UK, currently, only one theater is scheduled to show the shorts and it is after the Oscars.

The 2024 Oscars are just days away, which means it is time for Turner Classic Movie's annual 31 Days of Oscar celebration. Running from February 9 to March 10, Oscar-winning and Oscar-nominated movies are going to be played practically non-stop, from some of its earliest winners like Joanne Crawford in Mildred Pierce to more recent honorees like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and plenty in between. To make things easy for you, we're laying out the entirety of TCM's 31 Days of Oscar schedule for you in this post.

This marks the 30th year that TCM has done the 31 Days of Oscar. Among the highlights of the this year is how TCM is arranging its schedule, with each night representing nominees and winners from various Oscar categories, i.e. Best Costume Design, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Actor, Best Actress and, of course, Best Picture, which will make up the entirety of the last week of programming.

2024 Oscars host

A familiar face is going to be hosting the Oscars in 2024 in Jimmy Kimmel, who is hosting the awards ceremony for the fourth time, previously doing so in 2023, 2018 and 2017.

Kimmel is now one of six people that have hosted the Oscars four or more times. Others that have hosted four times include Jack Lemmon and Whoopi Goldberg, while Johnny Carson hosted five times, Billy Crystal nine times and Bob Hope had the most with 19 appearances as host.

The Hollywood Reporter has shared that the Academy plans to have the acting trophies be presented by a group of past winners. Many of the already announced presenters would qualify for that, with Nicolas Cage, Brendan Fraser, Ben Kingsley, Matthew McConaughey, Al Pacino anad Forest Whitaker past Best Actor winners; Sally Field, Jessica Lange, Jennifer Lawrence, Charlize Theron and Michelle Yeoh having won Best Actress; Mahershala Ali, Ke Hey Quan, Tim Robbins, Sam Rockwell and Christoph Waltz Best Supporting Actor winners; and Jamie Lee Curtis, Rita Moreno, Lupita Nyong'o, Octavia Spencer and Mary Steenburgen all former Best Supporting Actress winners.

It has also been announced that all of the Best Original Song nominees will be performed, with Ryan Gosling and Mark Ronson performing "I'm Just Ken," Billie Eilish performing "What Was I Made For?", Becky G performing "The Fire Inside," Jon Batiste performing "It Never Went Away" and Scott George and the Osage Singers performing "Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People)."

2024 Oscars categories

While everyone knows the big six Oscar categories — Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress — there are a total of 23 Oscars that are going to be given at the 96th ceremony that recognize different aspects of the filmmaking process, both in front of the camera and the talented individuals behind it, as well as different style of movies, including documentaries and short films.

The awards season is preparing to enter its final stretch, with Oscar nominations set to be announced on Tuesday, January 23, ahead of the official 2024 Oscars ceremony on March 10. If you're looking to catch up with any of the major Oscar contenders ahead of this (perhaps to brag to your friends you've already seen them), many of them are currently available to stream right now.

With only a few days left before the nominations, there are plenty of Oscar hopefuls that are available to watch right now on various streaming services, including Netflix, Prime Video, Peacock and more .

You can find all of the Oscar contenders available for streaming below, but if you want some help deciding which ones you should give a watch before January 23, here are my picks:

Air (Prime Video)

Many people may have forgotten about this April release, but Air is not out of the game just yet. The movie inspired by the true story of Nike's bold, nearly desperate attempt to sign promising NBA rookie Michael Jordan (heard of him?) to an unprecedented shoe deal received great reviews upon its release and has a chance to land some surprising nominations, with its best chances coming for its screenplay and performances by either Matt Damon or Viola Davis. What to Watch's Air review gave the movie 4.5 stars. You can stream it on Prime Video right now to find out why for yourself. 

Barbie (Max)

Barbie was the biggest movie of 2023 at the box office, so there's a good chance you've already seen it. But if you're the one person you know that hasn't or if you want to relive Greta Gerwig, Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling's bold, pink-tastic and hilarious movie about the iconic doll, it is available right now for Max subscribers. Barbie is expected to be right up there with the movies that earn the most nominations, with Best Picture likely and ones for Best Director, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor, and plenty of below-the-line categories likely. 

The Holdovers (Peacock)

While the Oscars could be another Barbenheimer showdown, The Holdovers is one of the few other movies that may have a chance at pulling the upset. What to Watch gave it the No. 2 spot in our top 10 movies of 2023 ranking, so it's clear how we feel about Paul Giamatti, Da'Vine Joy Randolph and Alexander Payne's movie. The Oscars are likely to follow suit, so check it out on Peacock to understand why it has charmed us, the Academy and more.  

Killers of the Flower Moon (Apple TV Plus)

Just about every time Martin Scorsese steps behind a camera, Oscars become a very real possibility, and it is no different with the director's latest, Killers of the Flower Moon. Best Picture and Best Director nods for Scorsese are strong possibilities, but the movie also has the chance to make history with a potential Best Actress nomination for Lily Gladstone, which would be a rare representation for Native artists at movies' biggest award night. 

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Netflix)

The Best Animated Feature Oscar looks like it is going to come down to either Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and The Boy and the Heron, but Spider-Man should not be counted out of appearing in multiple categories, with it even having a dark horse shot at landing in the Best Picture field of 10. The movie is an incredible feat of animation and tells a broad, thrilling story that is able to shake off any feelings of superhero fatigue.

If you're wondering about Oppenheimer, it's not yet available for streaming, though it has set its Peacock debut for February 16. It is available if you’re willing to spend $20, as you can rent it via digital on-demand. Other Oscar contenders are also available via digital on-demand platforms, including Past Lives, Anatomy of  Fall and Napoleon.

Other movies like All of Us Strangers, American Fiction, The Color Purple, Poor Things and The Zone of Interest are still playing exclusively in movie theaters.

The 2024 Oscar nominations will be announced at 8:30 am ET/5:30 am PT on Tuesday, January 23.

2023 once again confirmed that nothing beats the NFL in terms of viewership, but of the best of the rest in terms of most-watched telecasts from the year, Gordon Ramsay's Next Level Chef season 2 and the Oscars were able to make some headway amongst the gridiron games.

As it has done in recent years, Variety gathered data from Nielsen and put together the 100 most-watched TV telecasts of 2023. The first 14 were all NFL games, led of course by Super Bowl LVII between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs with 114.95 million viewers. But two non-NFL telecasts were able to crack the top 25: the Oscars, which came in at 15 with 19.41 million viewers, and Next Level Chef's season 2 premiere at 22 with 16.89 million viewers. 

After those two, you have to go to the number 40 spot to find a non-sport or award show, with the 60 Minutes episode that featured an interview with Prince Harry taking that spot with 12.46 million viewers.

While Next Level Chef has definitely proven to be a hit amongst viewers for Fox, its season 2 premiere did have some help to crack the top 25. Namely, the Super Bowl's 114.9 million viewers, as the Next Level Chef episode aired immediately after the big game.

Only one scripted episode of TV made it into the top 50 most-watched telecasts of the year. The most watched episode of scripted TV in 2023 was Fire Country season 1 episode 12, which aired on January 29 and had 12.22 million viewers; though again worth noting it had the NFL's AFC Championship game as a lead-in.

Once you get beyond the top 50, there is some more variety in the most-watched shows. Among the highlights, Yellowstone season 5 episode 8, which was the last episode from part one of the final season to air and tied for 51st with 11.47 million viewers. 

NCIS season 20 was the scripted show with the most top 100 watched telecasts, with 11 episodes making the list. It's highest being NCIS season 20 episode 11, at 55 and 11.25 million viewers.

In addition to Fire Country, new series Accused (59) and Night Court (94) both made the list with their series premieres.

Based on this list coming out on December 29, it's obvious that it doesn't account for the entire year. Specifically, the data covers from January 1 to December 3.

Angela Bassett did not win an Oscar for her role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, but before the year is out she is going to get an Oscar statue of her very own. On Monday, June 26, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (more commonly referred to as The Oscars or the Academy Awards) announced that Angela Bassett was one of four recipients of honorary Oscars; the others are writer/director/producer Mel Brooks, editor Carol Littleton and Sundance Institute founding director Michelle Satter.

The Academy shared the news via social media.

These annual honorary awards are meant to recognize individuals for their life's work in and impact on the movie industry.

Bassett was of course just nominated for Best Supporting Actress for playing Queen Ramonda in the Marvel sequel (Everything Everywhere All at Once's Jamie Lee Curtis won the award). That was her second Oscar nomination, with her first coming for Best Actress in the 1993 movie What's Love Got to Do With It, celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Bassett is also known in her career for roles in Boyz n the Hood, Malcolm X, Waiting to Exhale, How Stella Got Her Groove Back. She is also a multiple-time Emmy nominee for American Horror Story, Master of None and The Rosa Parks Story. She currently stars in 9-1-1.

Mel Brooks is the other big name receiving an honorary Oscar this year. The famed comedian (we made a list of some of our favorite Mel Brooks jokes from his movies) is known for writing and directing classic movies like Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, Spaceballs and The Producers; he actually previously won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for The Producers. He is also a bit of a producer himself, having helped bring movies like The Elephant Man, The Fly and more to the screen. Brooks, who turns 97 on June 28, is still working, most recently on History of the World Part II.

Not as well known to most but certainly deserving of her Oscar is Carol Littleton, who worked her whole career as an editor. She was nominated for one Oscar for editing E.T.: The Extraterrestrial, but she worked on 39 projects throughout her career, including Body Heat, The Big Chill, Tuesdays with Morrie, The Other Boleyn Girl and the HBO movies All the Way and My Dinner with Hervé.

Receiving the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award this year is Michelle Satter. The award is given to "an individual in the motion picture arts and sciences whose humanitarian efforts have brought credit to the industry." As a founding director of the Sundance Institute, Satter has helped foster the careers of filmmakers all over the world. She also is the founder of Sundance Collab, a global digital storytelling community and learning platform.

These four honorees will receive their Oscars on November 18 at the 2023 Governors Awards. These used to be included as part of the traditional Oscar broadcast, but that has not been the case sadly for a number of years.

The people have spoken, as What to Watch readers have cast their vote for the Oscar-nominated movie they believe deserves to take Best Picture this year, opting for Everything Everywhere All at Once in rather convincing fashion.

Everything Everywhere All at Once earned just under 25% of the votes from WTW readers. The next closest movie was Top Gun: Maverick with 13.6% of the votes. All Quiet on the Western Front and The Banshees of Inisherin also had respectable showings, earning more than 10% of all votes each.

The Michelle Yeoh-led multidimensional dramedy was one of the best reviewed movies of 2022, as it was "Certified Fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes at 95% by critics (with a quite respectable 88% positive rating from audiences), including earning a 4.5/5 stars from WTW's official review. The movie was also a success at the box office, earning more than $100 million worldwide. 

It also earned more Oscar nominations (11) than any other movie at this year’s ceremony, including Picture, Best Director, Best Actress (Yeoh), Best Supporting Actor (Ke Huy Quan) and two nominations for Best Supporting Actress (Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu).

Heading into Oscar Sunday, Everything Everywhere All at Once is considered the betting favorite to take Best Picture at the official awards ceremony, especially following its wins at the SAG Awards, the PGA Awards, the DGA Awards, the Critics Choice and the Independent Spirit Awards.

If you haven't yet watched Everything Everywhere All at Once, you can stream the movie right now if you have a Paramount Plus subscription in the US or Prime Video in the UK. The movie is also available to rent via digital on-demand or own on Blu-ray/DVD.

The Oscars 2023 take place on Sunday, March 12, with movie lovers able to watch the Oscars at 8 pm ET/5 pm PT on ABC in the US (UK viewers can stay up late to watch it at 1 am UK on Sky TV; check the Oscar website for where it is airing live where you live). Jimmy Kimmel hosts the event and as always a huge number of stars are set to be in attendance, walking the red carpet, presenting and/or repping their nominated movie.

Whoever wins Best Picture this year, where are they going to rank among the other 94 Best Picture winners?

Fresh off her stint performing at the Super Bowl Halftime Show, Rihanna is once again taking her talents to a big stage. The living pop music legend is set to perform "Lift Me Up" from the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack at this year's Oscars ceremony on Sunday, March 12. The track is nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Song and was written by Ludwig Göransson, Tems, Ryan Coogler and Rihanna herself. 

As of publication, she's the only performer among the nominated Original Songs announced by the Academy. Although, we anticipate that the powers that be behind the ceremony will soon announce other performers, as it is pretty standard for musicians to perform songs nominated for Best Original Song. This year, the category is rounded out by the following fellow nominees: 

• "Applause" from Tell It Like a Woman by Diane Warren   
• "Hold My Hand" from Top Gun: Maverick by Lady Gaga and BloodPop   
• "Naatu Naatu" from RRR by M.M. Keeravaani and Chandrabose   
• "This Is a Life" from Everything Everywhere All at Once by Ryan Lott, David Byrne, Mitski, Ryan Lott and David Byrne 

Expect the Academy to announce additional musicians taking to the stage in the coming days. 

Pivoting back to the "Umbrella" singer, her Oscar performance puts her in a very unique class. She now joins Wednesday star Catherine Zeta-Jones as the only person in recent memory to perform at the Academy Awards while pregnant. We can't help but to think how fortunate her second child is to be on some of the world's biggest stages having not yet even been born. 

Now unlike at the Super Bowl, we don't envision her live rendition of "Lift Me Up" will be quite as energetic given the song is more of a ballad. Plus, given the track is in many ways a tribute to Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman, we anticipate she'll honor him with a moving performance piece. 

Be sure you tune into the 95th Academy Awards to catch Rihanna on stage and see if she will be able to capture an Oscar trophy. While nominated for other awards like a Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award, to date, the most high-profile honor the song has received is an NAACP Image Award.

Shorts TV Presents 2023 Oscar Nominated Short Film has showings across the US and Canada. The screenings are often split between the animated and live action movies. The collection of animated movies have a total runtime of one hour and 35 minutes, the live action movies are one hour and 50 minutes.

Christmas morning for movie fans is here, as the 2023 Oscar nominations have been announced. Honoring many of the best movies of 2022, one movie has emerged as the leader of the pack for the coveted Best Picture trophy: Everything Everywhere All at Once.

Everything Everywhere led the Oscar nominations with a total of 11, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress (Michelle Yeoh), two nominations in Best Supporting Actress (Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu) and Best Supporting Actor (Ke Huy Quan). It showed its strength behind the camera as well, particularly with nominations in Best Score and Best Original Song, where neither was a lock. Everything Everywhere likely takes the post-nomination front-runner status for Best Picture, though it has some challengers just behind it.

The Banshees of Inisherin amassed nine total nominations, including four acting nods for its quartet of stars (Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan) and saw Martin McDonagh get nominated for both Best Director and Best Original Screenplay.

Coming off its BAFTA success, All Quiet on the Western Front also earned nine Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. The war epic dominated the below the line categories, but also earned an Adapted Screenplay nod.

Many of the other presumed movies had good showings: Elvis (eight nominations), The Fabelmans (seven nomination), TÁR (six nominations) and Top Gun: Maverick (six nominations).

As far as surprises, Avatar: The Way of Water did not have a particularly strong showing; despite being among the Best Picture field, it only scored three other nominations. Causeway star Brian Tyree Henry was a surprise entry, earning his first Oscar nomination. A last minute rallying cry for Andrea Riseborough's performance in To Leslie resulted in a Best Actress nomination. And Triangle of Sadness came through with three big nominations: Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay.

We’re at least getting a trilogy of Jimmy Kimmel hosting the Oscars, as the late-night host has been announced as the emcee for the 95th Oscars, the third time he has handled the job. The Academy announced the news in a tweet: 

The Oscars are on ABC and with Kimmel hosting his late-night show, Jimmy Kimmel Live, on the network, both sides are very familiar with each other. Not to mention Kimmel’s past experience hosting this specific event in back-to-back years in 2017 and 2018. There have been some memorable moments from Kimmel’s previous hosting gigs, including the infamous Best Picture gaff that had Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway being handed the wrong envelope and mistakenly announcing La La Land as the Best Picture winner before Moonlight was correctly announced.

Kimmel has been the host three of the last four times the Oscars have had a host, as after the 2018 ceremony the awards show went three years without one (while viewership was bigger in 2019 with no host than the Kimmel-hosted 2018 ceremony, no other hostless Oscars performed as well). The only other people to host the Oscars other than Kimmel in recent years was the trio of Regina Hall, Amy Schumer and Wanda Sykes at the 2022 ceremony, but those Oscars are going to be remembered for something else (the slap).

Also, now set to host the Oscars three times, Kimmel joins a group of only eight other people to host the Oscars three times or more. This includes Steve Martin, David Niven, Jerry Lewis (all three times), Whoop Goldberg, Jack Lemmon (both four times), Johnny Carson (five times), Billy Crystal (nine times) and Bob Hope (19 times).

The Hollywood Reporter quoted Kimmel speaking/joking about the announcement: "Being invited to host the Oscars for a third time is either a great honor or a trap. Either way, I’m grateful to the Academy for asking me so quickly after everyone good said no."

The timing of announcing Kimmel as the Oscar host is actually quite early, as The Oscars 2023 are taking place on Sunday, March 12. For comparison, Hall, Schumer and Sykes weren’t announced as the 2022 Oscar hosts until February, with that ceremony taking place on March 27, 2022.

We’ve still got a while to go before knowing what movies Kimmel is going to be talking about at the 2023 Oscars, as nominations for the 95th Academy Awards are going to be announced on January 24. But, movies that many people are predicting could be big players for this year’s top awards include Babylon, The Banshees of Inisherin, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans, TÁR, Top Gun: Maverick and more.

Again, The Oscars 2023 take place on Sunday, March 12, at 8 pm ET/5 pm PT on ABC (1 am UK time).

Comedian Jason Manford has tweeted a cheeky reference to that infamous Oscars 2022 moment that saw Will Smith slap Chris Rock after Rock joked about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.

Jason Manford was the lucky person selected to host this year's prestigious Olivier Awards at the Royal Albert Hall on Sunday, April 10, one of the first major awards events to follow the live broadcast of the Oscars. There, he helped to celebrate the biggest achievements and performances in live theatre.

Today (Monday, April 11), he tweeted a photo of himself sporting some boxing headgear and gloves, with the caption: "Was training all week for #TheOliviers but alas it was not needed".

Jason's followers clearly enjoyed the gag, as a few quickly started posting replies to let him know that he'd given them a giggle.

According to the BBC, this isn't the only reference the Salford-born comic has made back to that jaw-dropping moment, either.

Before the Olivier Awards ceremony, Jason gave a short housekeeping talk where he explained how the evening would work for those in attendance. During those announcements, he told the audience: "There will be moments where I've got to fill a bit of time when they're changing the set. So I'll come out and have a chat with some of you guys in the audience. Please don't slap me in the face."

"I'm a comedian, and this is an awards ceremony, and those two things have not gone down well together lately", he said once the ceremony got underway. "So before we get into this properly, let me tell you, I think all your hair looks lovely, and I will very much be keeping your wives' names out of my chuffing mouth this evening. This is an evening of back-slapping, not face-slapping.

"The last thing I need is a slap in the face from the seven actors who played the tiger", he joked, referring to the stage version of Life of Pi which received several accolades including best new play during the night. 

The biggest winner from the evening was Rebecca Frecknall's revival of the musical Cabaret. It received seven awards throughout the night, including the Best Actor in a Musical award for Eddie Redmayne (Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore).

The 2022 Oscar winners have finally been revealed and it was a big night for streaming services as CODA became the first-ever Best Picture recipient which had a streamer behind it — namely Apple TV Plus.

Some of the most notable winners at the star-studded ceremony include The Power of the Dog, The Eyes of Tammy Faye, King Richard, West Side Story, Encanto, Summer of Soul (or When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) and Drive My Car.

With such high accolades being awarded to these movies, no doubt you’ll be wanting to find the best way to watch them — and the good news is that you can do so from the comfort of your own home. CODA

CODA is a touching coming-of-age story about Ruby Rossi, the only hearing member of her family. Her parents and older brother are all deaf and she has a lot on her plate as she tries to support the struggling family fishing business as well as pursue her dreams of becoming a singer. It won three Oscars — Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay, making records as the first movie distributed by a streaming platform to win such accolades.

The Power of the Dog

The Power of the Dog focuses on rancher Phil Burbank, who is initially mocking and cruel when his brother returns home with his new wife and her son. However, his life soon changes as his relationship with the new family members uncovers secrets from his past. It received 12 nominations at the Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor. It went on to win Best Director — Jane Campion — and was named as one of the top 2021 films by the American Film Institute.

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

The Eyes of Tammy Faye takes a look at the life of Tammy Faye Bakker, who rose to public prominence due to her work in television as an evangelist, as well as her marriage to Jim Bakker. The pair built a Christian theme park and co-founded a program called The PTL Club, but Tammy’s life took a turn when Jim was imprisoned for fraud and conspiracy. The movie landed two Oscars — Best Actress for Jessica Chastain and Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

King Richard

If you’re a tennis fan or simply want to see Will Smith in another movie, King Richard is a great pick. It features Smith in the title role as Richard Williams, the father and coach of tennis stars, Venus and Serena Williams. The movie documents Richard’s struggle to find tennis coaches that his family can afford while he and his wife work full time and chronicles his mission to make them professional stars. It was nominated six times at the Oscars, with Smith winning the Best Actor award.

West Side Story

The classic musical that many of us will be familiar with has received a makeover in this Steven Spielberg movie. West Side Story was released in December 2021 and made over $75 million at the box office. Set in the 1950s, the movie tells the tale of Tony and Maria who fall in love after meeting at a dance in New York. From rival street gangs — the Jets and the Sharks — their romance only increases the tensions between the two gangs. Ariana DeBose won Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars, for her role in the film.

Encanto

A modern Disney classic to get the family into, this movie tells the story of the Madrigals, a family who reside in a magical place called the Encanto within the mountains of Colombia. Everyone in the family has a special gift, except for Mirabel. However, when the Encanto magic becomes endangered, she ends up being relied on by everyone. At the Oscars, it scooped up Best Animated Feature and Best Original Score.

Summer of Soul (or When The Revolution Could Not Be Televised)

History fans will love this intriguing documentary, which explores why the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival never received the publicity it deserves. The festival drew huge crowds and saw performances from Stevie Wonder, Sly and the Family Stone and Mahalia Jackson. However, although 40 hours of footage were recorded, the tapes remained untouched in a basement for over 50 years. At the Oscars, it nabbed the Best Documentary Feature award.

Drive My Car

This Japanese movie documents the story of a well-known actor and director who takes up an offer to direct a production at a theater festival in Hiroshima. While he’s there, he meets a young woman who is hired to chauffeur him around and the pair develop a bond as he uncovers the mysteries his late wife left behind. The feature earned four Oscar nominations and won the Best International Feature Film award.

If you look at it from a thousand feet out, the Academy and ABC got what they wanted during the most recent edition of the Oscars. The day after the broadcast the whole world was talking about the awards ceremony. Plus, the show saw a sizeable boost in its ratings from a historic low in 2021. But look closer and the cracks become clear.

The water-cooler moment from the Oscars was when Will Smith hit Chris Rock, live on TV (Rock made an in-poor-taste joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaven head, as he was introducing the Best Documentary award). Smith has since apologized for attacking Rock, admitting that he was out of line. But it became a moment that overshadowed the rest of the ceremony and dampened the joy of the winners, including for Smith — winning his first Oscar for Best Actor in King Richard. The historic wins of Ariana DeBose, Jane Campion, Troy Kotsur and CODA — as well as powerful speeches from Questlove and Jessica Chastain — were relegated to secondary talking points as a result. 

As for the ratings, early reports indicate this year’s Oscars saw a 58% increase in viewership overall and a good bump in the coveted adults 18-49 demographic. But the 16.6 million viewers are still the second lowest ratings for the awards show ever and only the second time it earned less than 20 million viewers, even after multiple efforts were made to draw viewers in.

The Oscars love to be viewed as "Hollywood’s biggest night," with the goal of delivering an entertaining, big, glamorous TV experience all while honoring what its 9,000 or so members have deemed the best in movies from the previous year. Trying to accomplish both goals is a tall task and it may be time for the Oscars to make life easier on themselves and get back to the basics — stop trying to be a TV entertainment show and focus on the awards and the movies themselves.

Let’s do a quick review of this most recent Oscars broadcast. After three years without a host, the Oscars enlisted Regina Hall, Amy Schumer and Wanda Sykes to emcee the evening, the trio taking on one of the hardest jobs in Hollywood. They had a few good bits (I enjoyed Sykes’ Academy Museum remote, Schumer was a pro addressing the audience after the slap and Hall was game and energetic in all her bits), but just as many failed and derailed the momentum of the show. Did we really need Schumer giving us a second monologue after the trio had just done one?

The other big decision, pushed by ABC and controversially implemented by the show’s producers, was to hand out eight awards an hour before the broadcast in order to shorten the show and finish in ABC’s allotted three-hour runtime. Many Academy members shared their disappointment, saying they were disrespecting nominees in key categories. Despite the controversial changes the broadcast still ran almost 40 minutes over the three-hour goal — no better than in past years when they gave out all the awards live. So that idea fell flat on its face.

Everything else was just … fine. Performances by Beyoncé and other nominated songs, as well as a redux of Encanto’s "We Don’t Talk About Bruno," were OK. Montages to The Godfather and James Bond were routine but disjointed — it seemed odd not to have the Bond montage presented by Bond actors (especially since Judi Dench, Javier Bardem and Rami Malek were all in the audience). Finally, the misguided attempt to bring the "fans" into the discussion with social media voted categories for "favorite movie" and "top cheer" moment — both won by Zach Snyder movies (The Justice League and Army of the Dead) — told us nothing more than how well fan communities can mobilize online.

The Oscars’ concern about declining ratings is fair, but it’s also missing the larger picture — it’s not just them, it’s all live TV events. Unless you are the NFL, or another major sporting event, ratings have been declining across the board. It’s not like other awards shows are doing any better. The most recent Emmy Awards in September 2021 had a viewership of 7.4 million; the 2021 Grammy’s last April had 8.8 million. Even pre-pandemic numbers the Oscars were still at the top of the ratings. The 2019 Oscars ceremony even saw an increase in ratings, hitting 29.6 million (a growth of more than 3 million people year-on-year). 

That year there was no host, a "Popular Film" category meant to get big blockbuster movies nominated was proposed but then abandoned, as was attempts to air some awards during commercial breaks to again try and shorten the ceremony. None of that mattered, people tuned in to see how Black Panther, A Star Is Born and Bohemian Rhapsody —  all in the top 15 highest-grossing movies of 2018 — would fare in Best Picture and other awards.

We’re not suggesting that the Oscars should focus exclusively on box-office hits rather than continuing to elevate a variety of movies large and small. What it shows, though, is that when the public has heard of some of the contenders, people tune in to see what wins. Now, I’d be fine if the Oscars were just: "here’s the nominees, here’s the winner and here’s the speech. Now, onto the next one." But we know that others tune into the Oscars for the red carpet glamor, love the comedy skits and the presenter pairings. Finding the balance is key. 

Of course, ABC (which owns the broadcast rights for the Oscars until 2028) should do what it can to boost its ratings, but trying to liven up the show for a younger generation that rarely watch TV, while annoying the existing audience doesn’t make much sense. If the Oscars are going to reach audiences it will likely be because of all the things the Oscars have always done well — glamorous people, dressed to the nines handing out awards for movies that people truly love and care about.

Will Smith won an Oscar for Best Actor on Sunday, but the moment everyone will be talking about (and will instantly go down in Oscar history) is the surprise exchange that he had with Chris Rock that had everyone in shock.

Chris Rock was tasked with presenting the Oscar for Best Documentary, which would eventually be handed out to Summer of Soul. As presenters usually try to do, Rock attempted to have some fun with his moment on the Dolby Stage. Rather than focusing his bit on the category, he instead started by addressing the nominated couple of Javier Bardem (Being the Ricardos) and Penelope Cruz (Parallel Mothers) before then pivoting to another Hollywood power couple in the audience, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, particularly the latter.

Rock joked that he was looking forward to seeing Pinkett Smith in GI Jane 2, referring to her shaved head. Pinkett Smith has alopecia, something that she has spoken about openly. 

Will Smith did not like the joke, made his way to the stage and slapped Rock across the face. Many then had their audio went out because of censorship issues, but after Smith returned to his seat he yelled back to rock, “Keep my wife’s name out of your f***ing mouth!”

The moment was so shocking that almost no one could tell if the moment was staged or sincere. But this was no stunt. Press at the Dolby Theater shared on social media the scene following the incident, which included the likes of Denzel Washington and Tyler Perry speaking to Smith off the side, as well as Smith’s publicist and the Oscars producer Will Packer speaking to Smith.

Just a little while after this, Smith won Best Actor for his performance in King Richard. The part of his acceptance speech was about how Richard Williams protected his family, with tears quickly welling up in his eyes. He referenced the incident while never directly speaking to it. He apologized to the Academy and other nominees while sharing something that Washington told him in their commercial conversation — “the devil comes for you at your highest moment.” Smith ended his speech saying he hopes the Academy invites him back.

Those in attendance appeared to show their support for Smith, including last year's Best Picture winner Anthony Hopkins, who offered his support in his moment before presenting the Best Actress award.

This will be a topic of discussion for days to come (if not longer) and we can be sure that we will hear more about the situation from Smith and from Rock in the near future.

Troy Kotsur won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in CODA. But you may have found yourself asking this question — who is this Troy Kotsur?

Kotsur has been one of the breakout stars of the 2022 awards season — winning multiple trophies for his fantastic performance in CODA. That recognition and the resulting attention have made him one of the most prominent deaf actors in Hollywood. Or as he prefers to describe it, "an actor who happens to be deaf."

Following his historic win, here’s what you need to know about Troy Kotsur.

Troy Kotsur bio

Troy Kotsur has been deaf since he was born in 1968 in Mesa, Ariz. He attended Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., to study acting. The university specializes in the education of deaf and hard-of-hearing students.

Kotsur then began his professional acting career on the stage — touring with the National Theater of the Deaf. Per NPR, Kotsur’s theatrical career included time on Broadway in the Tony-winning play Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and as the lead in productions of Cyrano and A Streetcar Named Desire, with the Deaf West Theater in Los Angeles.

Kotsur made the transition to TV and movies in 2001, with his first credit being an episode of the Lifetime series, Strong Medicine. He added appearances in shows including CSI: NY, Scrubs, Criminal Minds and The Mandalorian, where he played a Tusken Raider Scout in season 1.

Prior to 2021, his movie roles included The Number 23, Universal Signs, No Ordinary Hero: The SuperDeafy Movie (he also directed) and Wild Prairie Rose.

Troy Kotsur in CODA

Though he had been acting in TV and movies for over 20 years, Troy Kotsur’s breakout came when CODA premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival. CODA centers on Ruby, the only hearing person in a deaf family, making her a CODA (or Child of Deaf Adults). Ruby is torn between pursuing her passion for singing and staying to help her family and their struggling fishing business.

Kotsur plays Frank Rossi, the brash and hilarious father of Ruby, who is often seen using distinctive American Sign Language (ASL) signs to express the character’s love of foul language. The chance to show what he calls "vulgar sign language" on screen was something he was very excited about, as he told ScreenDaily.

It's fun to watch Kotsur using ASL to curse at people who anger him or flirt with his wife (played by The West Wing's Marlee Matlin), but his range allows him to deliver more emotional scenes. When he asks his daughter to sing for him, then holds his hand against her throat so he can feel the vibrations, it's an intense moment.

Kotsur’s performance in CODA has been widely praised and has seen him heaped with numerous awards for Best Supporting Actor — including major wins at the BAFTAs, the Screen Actors Guild Awards (he also won for Best Ensemble with the rest of the CODA cast) and the Critics Choice Awards.

Troy Kotsur Oscars 2022

Kotsur won Best Supporting Actor at the 2022 Oscars for his performance in CODA. His win, makes him the second deaf actor to win an Oscar, following his CODA co-star Marlee Matlin, who won Best Actress for 1986’s Children of a Lesser God.

He went up against a field that included The Power of the Dog’s Kodi Smit-McPhee and Jesse Plemmons, Belfast’s Ciarán Hinds and Being the Ricardos J.K. Simmons. With his wins at SAG, BAFTAs and Critics Choice, Kotsur is considered the favorite to take home the trophy, with his next closest competitor probably being Smit-McPhee.

Now that Troy Kotsur has charmed much of Hollywood with his performance in CODA, what is next for the actor?

In August 2021, Deadline reported that Kotsur had been cast in Flash Before the Bang, a sports movie based on the true story of an all-deaf high school track & field team. The story centers on the track & field team from the Oregon School for the Deaf, which overcame discrimination and adversity to compete against larger Oregon public schools at the 1986 Oregon State Track & Field Championships.

Kotsur will play the lead, Coach Farrior. He is joined in the cast by Nyle DiMarco, who is best known for being a contestant on America’s Next Top Model but has also appeared on TV shows including Switched at Birth and Station 19. Deanne Bray is also in the movie, who is best known for a recurring role on Heroes and worked previously with Kotsur on No Ordinary Hero: The SuperDeafy Movie and Wild Prairie Rose.

Jevon Whetter, a deaf director, writer and producer, is directing the movie, which is based on his own life experience. No word on when the movie will be released.

Kotsur was also tapped for a role in a new TV show The Last Police, but the show was passed on by Fox, per Deadline. It is not clear if any other network has picked it up.

We suspect there'll be plenty of calls coming in for the actor if Oscars night goes his way!

If you were to ask someone to describe “Oscar bait,” a movie seemingly designed with the sole intent of winning awards, “biopic” would probably come up pretty early on. We generally associate the genre with ideas of prestige and that stereotype exists for a reason. Just take a look at this year’s Oscar nominations. 

Of the 20 actors nominated for their performances across four categories, eight of them are for biopics. This includes Jessica Chastain in The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Javier Bardem and Nicole Kidman in Being the Ricardos, Kristen Stewart in Spencer and Will Smith King Richard. At 40% that’s actually pretty low compared to some years, like 2019's acting field, which was made up of a huge 60% biopic performances. 

Since 2000, in the Best Actor category, biopic performances have represented 43% of the nominees but 57% of the winners. If you want an Oscar, then you’d better ask your agent to look for those biopic scripts and be willing to wear a lot of prosthetics.

The mistake to make about the Oscars, as many do, is to presume that they are only interested in niche arthouse fare over the kind of blockbusters that the majority of ticket-buying viewers watch. Really, the Academy is pretty middlebrow, seldom straying away from crowd-pleasing dramas. Biopics, in their most industry-endorsed form, are the epitome of that. They tend to stick to a rigid storytelling formula that adheres to conventional character beats and a familiar structure. It’s a recipe that works, especially if you’re an actor.

Biopics do well with the Oscars for the same reason that quieter films don’t. They provide an acting showcase where subtlety isn’t necessarily required. There’s a reason why many actors win an Oscar not for their best work but for their most bombastic performances, whether it’s Al Pacino with Scent of a Woman or Joaquin Phoenix with Joker. They’re not bad bits of acting, per se, but they’re certainly roles where you see the capital "W" in Work. Biopics are all about that work.

When you play a real-life person, especially one who is highly familiar to your viewers, you have a visual to draw direct parallels from. Audiences have that luxury too. They can, for example, watch Rami Malek replicate the Queen performance at Live Aid in Bohemian Rhapsody then compare it to the real footage and see how good a job he did. If he nails the exact moves, the struts, the expressions, then that’s a “good job.” You can listen to audio of Winston Churchill’s famous speeches then see if Gary Oldman got the voice inflections right in Darkest Hour. That’s handy for Academy voters too. What’s an easier way to reward a performance as the “best”, than by pointing to such a comparison?

Often these performances demand a transformative element. Outside of biopics, actors who go to great pains to change their appearance for a role can expect countless headlines about how “unrecognizable” they are, with agonizing detail paid to the pounds they lost or gained and the hours they spent in the make-up trailer to look less-than-stunning. An actor’s body is their tool, and we expect a certain kind of change from role to role but seldom is this process as fetishized as it is with the biopic transformation and subsequent awards promotional cycle. Actors and their teams love to talk up how tough it was to, for example, wear mountains of prosthetics or gain 25 pounds (or wear a fatsuit) to play that real-life figure we all know so well. 

Nicole Kidman’s Best Actress win for playing Virginia Woolf in The Hours was almost entirely defined by the fake nose she wore. Charlize Theron’s performance as Aileen Wournos in Monster is undoubtedly superb but it’s also notable how much of the buzz around her work focused on the weight gain, prosthetics and general act of turning one of the most beautiful women on the planet into someone “ugly” (something that Theron herself took umbrage to).

The campaign is as much a part of the Oscar experience as the performance itself. The performance can be perfect but sometimes you need a good "journey" narrative to sell it in. Maybe you’re a beloved industry figure who’s never won before or a rising ingenue getting your "star is born" moment. 

The biopic narrative speaks for itself. An actor plays a well-known figure, transforming themselves with months of research, a body overhaul and loving homage. If the person they're playing is also part of the entertainment world, a well-known celebrity, even better (hence why Nicole Kidman is currently one of the frontrunners in Best Actress for playing TV star Lucille Ball, in Being the Ricardos). You worked hard, you let everyone know you worked hard and your industry contemporaries, who are all too familiar with such labor, can appreciate that.

The biopic is limiting as a film structure — and it barely allows actors to do more than impersonations for fear of being told where they went wrong. But the biopic is here to stay, at least as long as the Oscars continue to reward them at a much higher rate than other films. 

So, if Nicole Kidman and Will Smith take to the podium this year with their statuettes, you’ll understand why.

This year's Oscar nominees included something of a surprise. Among the more traditional, predicted films like Belfast and Don’t Look Up was Drive My Car, the Japanese drama from Ryusuke Hamaguchi — beloved by film critics. 

Drive My Car received four nominations overall, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay — which, historically, is unusual for a film not in the English language. It became the first Japanese movie to get a Best Picture nomination, a feat that not even famed directors Akira Kurosawa or Yasujirō Ozu achieved.

Also nominated outside of the Best International Film category — the silo for non-English-language films — was The Worst Person in the World, Joachim Trier’s Cannes Award-winning drama, which features in the Best Original Screenplay category. Pedro Almodovar's Parallel Mothers was also nominated for Best Original Screenplay and its star Penelope Cruz was nominated for Best Actress, though the movie wasn’t even selected by Spain for Best International Film contention. To cap off 2022 nominations, Flee (from Denmark) was nominated for Best Animated Feature and Best Documentary, in addition to Best International Film.

For movie fans, it’s been exciting to see the Oscars pay more attention to titles outside of the Hollywood machine in languages other than English. Yet the journey towards such recognition has been maddeningly incremental, hindered by industry-wide biases that have shut audiences out of some of the richest, most challenging and rewarding films of the past century. So, are things changing now?

Parasite director Bong Joon-ho once famously noted that the Oscars are a “local” competition. Historically speaking, he wasn’t wrong. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences was founded to represent the interests of the American movie industry in Hollywood at a time when movies were popular but seen as a frivolity. The Oscars were a way for the business to reward its own. 

In the early days, there was even some hesitation among Oscar voters when non-American titles were nominated. For the first 18 years of the Oscars, no films not in the English language received any awards and, following that, such titles were awarded on an honorary basis. The category for non-English-language films was only created in 1956. To be eligible, the country itself must submit just one film for consideration. The idea behind this was that it would level the playing field and stop more established filmmaking nations from dominating the category.

Since then, films not in the English language tend to be awarded almost exclusively in the Best International Film category (formerly Best Foreign Language Film). It remains dishearteningly rare for even the most acclaimed international movies to make waves in other categories. 

Some of the most legendary filmmakers of our time — from Ingmar Bergman to Federico Fellini — received much-deserved nominations for Best Director, but never won. Only 13 non-English language films have been nominated for Best Picture (two of those were American productions.) Only 10 films wholly financed outside the United States have won Best Picture, eight of which were financed, in part or in whole, by the United Kingdom.

That's about as international as the Academy likes to get. This is why it was such an astounding moment to see Parasite become a multi-Oscar-winning film and a mainstream cultural phenomenon. The film took home four awards, beating supposed frontrunners from more traditional Oscar fare, like 1917. 

It took over 90 years for the Academy to give its biggest prize to a film not in the English language, which is pretty depressing when you consider the sheer breadth of cinematic history, from Jean Renoir to Kurosawa to Lina Wertmuller to Mira Nair. How can you claim to represent the full power and creative beauty of film when you only focus on what amounts to a small sliver of its offerings? It’s a display of artistic incuriosity as well as a view of the art form defined by the west and language biases.

Biases have also defined which kind of international movies get recognized. African films are seldom nominated. South Korea didn't get any sort of attention until Parasite, which is slightly ridiculous when you consider their rich film history. For many decades, the Academy's rules offered stifling restrictions in terms of language eligibility. This meant that many indigenous languages, of countries like Canada, were not considered eligible, nor were films where English was the nation’s primary language, such as Nigeria.

Politics also plays a messy part in proceedings. A Palestinian-Arab film, Paradise Now, landed a nomination but faced criticism from pro-Israeli groups in the United States, which objected to the Academy's use of the name Palestine on its official website as the film's country designation. 

Because the countries submit the film, there have been concerns over artistic censorship. This is especially notable with China's submissions over the past few years, with patriotic action titles like Wolf Warrior 2 being put forward over works that are considered less suitable. Given how tough it is for the Academy to get out of its comfort zone, this category's stifling demands impact the long-term potential of international cinema.

That’s why it matters when the Academy moves away from the status quo and acknowledges international films. For all of the grumbling that the Oscars don’t really matter (and we could be here all day discussing its myriad issues), for films outside of the mainstream such recognition has a tangible impact. After receiving its four nominations, Drive My Car’s box office revenues exploded and the movie has now made over $1 million in America. That’s impressive for a three-hour relationship drama about trauma, language barriers and the pain of generational secrets. 

The Academy has made great strides over the past few years to diversify its membership along lines of gender, race and age and you can see the beginnings of that take effect with the recognition for Parasite and Drive My Car. It’s a small step but progress happens when lots of small steps push things forward. It’s unlikely Drive My Car will win Best Picture, but its presence ensures that international cinema can be at the forefront of the prestige conversation, as it should be.

Last week the 2022 Oscar nominations were announced and now details about the actual Oscars ceremony are being revealed, including who will be hosting and an exciting way for movie fans to be a part of the evening.

First reported by Variety and then separately confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter, this year's Oscars are slated to be hosted by Regina Hall, Amy Schumer and Wanda Sykes. Neither ABC, which broadcasts the Oscars, nor any of the three comedians have commented on the reports, and the official announcement for who will be the Oscars host(s) is going to be shared on Good Morning America on Tuesday, Feb. 15.

Hall is best known for starring in comedies like Girls Trip and the Scary Movie franchise. Schumer’s previous credits include her Comedy Central sketch show Inside Amy Schumer (for which she won an Emmy) and movies like Trainwreck. Sykes, meanwhile, is a stand-up comedy legend and Emmy winner who has worked on The Chris Rock Show, guest starred on Black-ish and more. 

Previous reports had suggested that the Oscars could feature multiple hosts, and rumors have been circulating around the likes of Only Murders in the Building stars Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez; Tom Holland; Dwayne Johnson; Kevin Hart and others.

The news regarding Hall, Schumer and Sykes as the potential hosts for the Oscars wasn’t the only thing about the ceremony to break. For the first time, the general movie fan will be able to participate in the ceremony themselves, voting on their favorite movie and movie moment of the year.

From Feb. 14 to March 3, movie fans can vote on what their favorite movie of 2021 was and have it recognized during the Oscars ceremony, whether it was nominated or not. Votes can be submitted either on the Oscars website or through Twitter using the hashtag #OscarsFanFavorite. Three individuals that vote in the Oscars Fan Favorite will also win the prize of getting flown out to Los Angeles to present an award at the 2023 Oscars.

Fans can also vote on their favorite movie moment from the last year again through the Oscars website or on Twitter with the hashtag #OscarsCheerMoment, with winning moments also to be featured during the ABC broadcast.

This year’s ten Best Picture nominees hoping to hear their name called at the Oscars on March 27, are Belfast, CODA, Don’t Look Up, Drive My Car, Dune, King Richard, Licorice Pizza, Nightmare Alley, The Power of the Dog and West Side Story.

Kenneth Branagh’s Belfast is nominated for seven Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor and Actress (Ciarán Hinds and Judi Dench) and Best Original Screenplay. The movie, which is based on Branagh’s own life growing up in Belfast during The Troubles in the late 1960s, has been dubbed by critics as an uplifting and powerful tale.

CODA

Having premiered all the way back at Sundance 2021, CODA is a crowd-pleasing movie about the only hearing child of a predominantly deaf family (CODA stands for Child of Deaf Adults) who deals with her dream of attending music school and her family’s need to help out in their family business. CODA was nominated for three Oscars (Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor for Troy Kotsur and Best Adapted Screenplay).

Don’t Look Up

The star-studded (Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Cate Blanchett, Tyler Perry, Meryl Streep, Jonah Hill and many more) Don’t Look Up is a satirical look at what would happen if a meteor capable of destroying all life on Earth was discovered. The movie earned four Oscar nominations in total, highlighted by Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay.

Drive My Car

Hailing from Japan, Drive My Car struck a chord with the Oscars, earning four nominations - Best Picture, Best Director (Ryusuke Hamaguchi), Best Adapted Screenplay and Best International Film. The movie follows a renowned actor/director who is hired to perform a play in Hiroshima, where he begins to face the haunting mysteries his late wife left behind.

• US: Drive My Car is playing in theaters on wide release; it will make its streaming debut on March 2 when it lands on HBO Max.
• UK: Drive My Car is available to watch in movie theaters but is also streaming on BFI Player and Curzon Home Cinema.

Dune

Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic Dune scored 10 Oscar nominations, dominating the craft categories while also getting recognized for Best Adapted Screenplay and, of course, Best Picture. Based on Frank Herbert’s novel, Dune (part one) follows Paul Atreides, the son of a noble family tasked with overseeing a planet that is the home of the most valuable resource in the universe.

King Richard

King Richard, starring Will Smith as the driven father to tennis superstars Venus and Serena Williams, earned six Oscar nominations, with Smith (Best Actor), Aunjanue Ellis (Best Supporting Actress), the script (Best Original Screenplay) and Beyonce’s song “Be Alive” (Best Original Song) among its haul alongside Best Picture.

Licorice Pizza

Paul Thomas Anderson’s ode to the San Fernando Valley of his youth snagged three Oscar nominations, with Licorice Pizza being recognized for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay.

Nightmare Alley

From Oscar-winner Guillermo Del Toro, the director’s latest movie, Nightmare Alley, received four Oscar nominations, as it tells the story of an ambitious carney (Bradley Cooper) with a talent for manipulating people who teams up with a female psychiatrist (Cate Blanchett) that may be even more dangerous than he is.

• US: Nightmare Alley is still playing in theaters on wide release. (in fact, there's a black-and-white version of the movie playing in select theaters, as well). It is also available to stream on both HBO Max and Hulu.

The Power of the Dog

The Power of the Dog, directed by Jane Campion and starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst, was the most nominated movie at this year’s Oscars, landing 12 in total, including for Picture, Director and acting nods for its four stars (Cumberbatch, Dunst, Jesse Plemons and Kodi Smit-McPhee).

This western drama is centered around Cumberbatch’s intimidating rancher Phil Burbank, who attempts to torment his brother’s new wife and stepson.

Where to watch The Power of the Dog now: As it's a Netflix movie it is available exclusively on the streaming service.

West Side Story

The Oscars clearly love West Side Story. After the 1961 original musical won Best Picture, Steven Spielberg’s fantastic update to the classic story of Tony and Maria and the Jets and the Sharks landed seven Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Supporting Actress (Ariana DeBose).

Where to watch West Side Story now: 

• US + UK: the big screen is still the only option for West Side Story.
  However, although it is not currently available for streaming, the musical has a March 2 release date, on Disney Plus in the US, the UK and in most international markets. West Side Story will also become available on 4K UHD/Blu-ray on March 15.

The 2022 Oscars nominations are here! From Best Picture to Best Visual Effects, the movies that will be competing as part of the 94th Academy Awards on March 27 were announced this morning by Leslie Jordan and Tracee Ellis Ross in Los Angeles.

Among the highlights of the nominations were The Power of the Dog and it's leading 12 nominations, including for director Jane Campion and its quartet of stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons and Kodi Smit-McPhee. The sci-fi epic Dune was awarded for its grand vision with 10 nominations. Tied for third with seven nominations each were Kenneth Branagh's Belfast and Steven Spielberg's West Side Story.
