We would recommend it for kids' dens or for camping trips.

As said, this isn’t as high-tech as some others on this list, with standard definition resolution and 500:1 contrast ratio along with a brightness of 100 lumens. However, for occasional use, this is ideal, as you don’t want to pay for features that you aren’t getting to get much use from. Battery life is still decent at 80 minutes — perfect for a couple of TV episodes.

How to choose the best outdoor projector

Outdoor projectors are the perfect solution for garden watch parties for a reasonable price, but there are a few things you need to consider in order to make the right choice.

How bright does an outdoor projector need to be?

Because the best outdoor projectors are battery-powered, they generally put out slightly dimmer images than your average to conserve energy. That doesn’t mean, however, that they aren’t capable of delivering great visuals.

The examples on our list range between 100-800 lumens, with the higher number meaning the resulting image will be easier to see in the daylight. So, if you want something that can be used during an afternoon barbeque, always opt for the brighter projector.

How much should I spend on an outdoor projector?

Right now it would be difficult to find a good outdoor projector for less than £150, with the best ones costing as much as £900. This is, of course, still significantly cheaper than purchasing a cinema-sized flat-screen TV, and also comes up less than a high-spec indoor projector. Our advice would be to make sure you’re getting what you pay for, with the more expensive examples sporting higher resolution and brightness.

Many projectors have clearly been designed for use in boardrooms, not front rooms, but the Optoma is a projector made primarily for home cinema. It’s a good-looking thing and because it’s an ultra-short throw model it can sit at the base of a wall rather than halfway across the room. Think of it as a real alternative to a large TV, but with a bigger display area.

The single-chip DLP has a laser light engine and produces gorgeous HDR images at 3,000 ANSI lumens, although as with other projectors there’s a visible difference between projector HDR and OLED TV HDR: the latter’s blacks are much blacker. And it’s worth noting that the stated HLG support only applies to playback via USB. Nevertheless, this is a really strong projector that produces excellent images and surprisingly good sound too. 

This BenQ projector has been designed specifically for gamers and delivers 4K at up to 60Hz with a relatively low 16ms input lag. Input lag is the delay between something being sent to the projector and it being projected and 16ms is low for a projector — the Optoma at number one in this list has a dedicated gaming mode but that still has 50ms lag. But it’s not close to the performance of a dedicated gaming monitor, which typically comes with input lag that’s lower than 3ms. It’s not going to be an issue for most kinds of games, but if you absolutely need to have the lowest lag possible then you’d be better off with a gaming monitor.

The rest of the package here is very impressive, with Android TV built-in, an impressive 4K UHD HDR picture and presets that make a big difference to games that were made dark on the understanding they’d be played on monitors, not projected on walls. The BenQ does a good job of boosting contrast so you can actually see what’s going on in even the dankest dungeon. 

This is an excellent all-rounder with true 4K, HDR and 3000 lumens brightness. It supports HDR Pro and HLG, it has a dedicated sports mode to enhance the on-screen action – this projector is actively marketed towards sports fans — and it comes with stacks of Best Buy awards from the likes of our sister site Techradar. It lacks some of the features you’d find on a similarly priced TV — there aren’t any streaming apps on board and while there’s HDR, like other projectors there’s no HDR10+ or Dolby Vision. It’s also short throw rather than ultra-short throw, so you can’t tuck it away at the base of a wall when you’re using it, but that 3,000 lumens power does bring a lot of light. 

The ViewSonic M2 is a very portable and very powerful full HD projector and comes with Harman Kardon audio and a very nice-looking metalling bronze case. You can run it off a power bank via USB-C (it needs to be 45W or more) for completely plug-free operation, and it’s compatible with computers, consoles and Bluetooth streaming. While it isn’t 4K the HDR and colour reproduction is extremely impressive, and it can throw a 100-inch image onto the wall from just 2.7 metres away. And you don’t have to sit it exactly in the centre of your room: the M2 has H/V keystone and corner settings to compensate for placing it at an angle.

This is a really good projector, and while it’s marketed as a portable solution it’s a pretty good option to keep in one place too. If you don’t need 4K and can live with the relative lack of brightness it’s definitely worth considering before you look at more expensive options.

If you’re looking for a stunning 4K movie projector, this BenQ could be just the job: the W5700 and its silvery sibling the WS5700S another HDR Pro / HDR 10 model and it offers 100% DCI-P3/Rec.709 giving the most faithful color reproduction. It’s fitted with a very high-quality 11-element lens array for pin-sharp 4K, and there is built-in ISF (Imaging Science Foundation) ccc calibration to customize the image settings for any room conditions. With 4K, HDR 10 dynamic tone mapping and a screen size of up to 140 inches, this projector offers impressive image quality — although at 1,500 lumens it isn’t as bright as some of the other projectors here. Additionally, the LED here is four channels rather than the usual three to better adjust contrast and color tone. There’s also built-in webOS 4.5 so you can use your LG projector just like an LG smart TV.

The Cinebeam’s price is often significantly lower than its RRP so it’s a very good idea to shop around for the best deals on this one.

If you've been in the market for a laser projector but just haven't been able to pull the trigger because they're, well, not cheap, today is a good day. At $1,949, the VAVA 4K laser projector still isn't inexpensive — but it's also $850 cheaper thanks to some sweet Cyber Monday pricing. Normally the unit runs $2,800, so you're getting 30 percent off here.

And it just so happens that I've had this laser projector in my home for review. It's simple to set up — just stick it in front of a wall or, ideally, an ambient-light-rejecting screen. You'll do a little tweaking on the picture size and focus, and then you're good to go.

It's got an Android-based operating system built in, if you want to keep things as simple as possible, but it also will handle any HDMI-capable streaming hardware you want. (And that's what I'd recommend doing. Just skip even hooking it up to Wifi.) Once you're up and running you've got a 4K-quality picture with HDR, 2500 ANSI Lumens of brightness, and 25,000 hours of run time. It's also got an integrated 60-watt speaker if you don't want to run through any other sort of sound system, and the audio quality is surprisingly good.

The one bad thing here? Having a projector like this isn't just like swapping out televisions. It really will change the way you watch TV, and the way you think about watching TV in your living room. 

The biggest advantage a projector has over a TV is that you get a much larger screen for a much lower price. The downside to this is that — in most cases — you'll need to have the projector itself a few feet away from the screen it's projecting onto. This distance can vary from one foot to needing to be inside your wall.

Here's how to find out if your room is big enough for a projector!

Throw ratios

The number you want to look for when you're shopping for projectors is the throw ratio , sometimes referred to as throw distance . In English, the throw ratio is a way to calculate how far the projector needs to be from the wall or screen for a certain screen size. For example, a throw ratio of 1 means the projector needs to sit 1-foot from the screen to project a 1-foot diagonal image. A .4 throw ratio means the projector needs to be 4.8-inches away from the screen to projector a 1-foot diagonal image. The equation breaks down like this:

(Throw ratio) X (desired screen size in inches) = (distance in inches)
.4 throw ratio X 150-inches = 60-inches/five feet of distance.

Standard projectors

"Standard" projectors may also be labeled as "long throw" projectors. As the latter name implies, these require the greatest distance between the projector and the screen. The benefit to this is they are much cheaper to produce than short and ultra short throws, making them drastically cheaper for the consumer. Standard throw projectors have a throw ratio greater than 1. For example, the Acer H7850 projector has a throw ratio of 1.2, so for a 150-inch image, it would need to sit 180-inches — 15-feet exactly — from the screen. That might be doable in some living rooms, but certainly not all.

In this instance, you'll definitely need a mount or a shelf for the projector. Renters will need to look at their lease terms before buying a projector like this to make sure you're allowed to install a mount or a shelf.

Short-throw projectors

We're moving a bit closer to the screen. Short throw projectors need to be between 5 and 10 feet away from the screen, depending on how large of an image you want. Short throw projectors have a throw ratio between .4 and 1. My Optoma GT1080Darbee had a .49 throw ratio, so for a 150-inch image, it needed to sit 72.5-inches — just over 6 feet — from the screen. I simply placed it on the bottom of a coffee table, no drilling or mounting required.

A short throw projector would be perfect for someone renting an apartment, because it doesn't have to be mounted. Just make sure you leave enough space between the projector and the screen.

Ultra-short-throw projectors

These are the most expensive type of projector, but if you're tight on space it's worth the price of entry. Ultra short throw projectors have a throw ratio less than .4, so they only need a couple feet of distance to project a huge image. My ViewSonic PX800HD has a .23 throw ratio, so for a 150-inch image, it needs to sit 34.5-inches — about two and a half feet — from the screen. This means it can sit right on a TV stand, or next to an empty wall.

An ultra short throw projector would be perfect for someone renting an apartment, since it can be placed right next to the screen or wall it's projecting onto — without any mounting. It's also perfect for someone that wants a giant portable screen, or even a gigantic PC "monitor" .

Other things to consider

Unless you're going to buy a mount or shelf for the projector to sit behind you, you'll also need some space in your room for couches, coffee tables and other furniture. Also think about how long you'll be in your current home: it doesn't make much sense to install a mount and route cables through your walls if you're trying to sell your house anytime soon.

I met up with the folks at VAVA at CES in January 2020, and they sent over their VAVA 4K Ultra Short Throw Laser Projector, which I've used for a couple months before it heads back home. It's a more-affordable laser projector. (Or maybe less unaffordable?)

And it's absolutely changed the way I watch things in my living room. In fact, it made me want to change the living room itself. I am, in fact, changed.

That's all there is to it?

VAVA 4K Ultra Short Throw Laser Projector What I Liked

Projectors always seemed like they were something other people. Someone with a dedicated home theater and means to mount the darn thing on the other side of the room. Ultra-short-throw projectors change that equation. There's no worry about mounting. No concerns about ceiling fans or people walking through the picture. I just put the projector on my usual entertainment center, moving it as close to the edge as I could to maximize the picture. The end result? About 120 diagonal inches. Incredible.

I'm not a big fan of instruction manuals. I love to just plug things in and see how they work, especially when I'm shoe-horning something in to my existing setup. And the VAVA performed admirably. I just plugged in the power, plugged my existing soundbar into the ARC input, and plugged in an NVIDIA Shield and Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K, since those were closest.

It took just a little bit of wiggling to get the picture as close to square as I could on the wall — it's painfully evident when it's not lined up, so that was easy. Also a quick trip into the settings menu exposed controls for fine-tuning the alignment, whether you need to fix a corner just a tad, or scale down the entire picture to fit your screen. (As I was projecting directly onto the wall, that last part was moot.) Focus also took care of itself, too, but there's also a settings option if you need manual control for that. The only other setting I touched was to turn off the internal 60-Watt Harman Kardon speaker so audio would be using my Vizio surround system instead. The internal speaker isn't bad — surprisingly good, even. But it's also not a proper home-theater audio setup.

But otherwise, that was it. We were up and running. Huge picture. Mostly crisp picture. (More on that in a second.) And my usual sound.

And on paper, anyway it's fairly comparable to the more expensive LG Cinebeam 4K Laser Projector. (That's the $6,000 HU85LA model.) VAVA sports 2500 ANSI Lumen, while LG's maxes at 2700 ANSI Lumen. LG's also has a greater contrast ratio and a shorter throw, and smarter smarts built in. But it also costs about twice as much.

Another bright spot was the VAVA remote control. It's so easy for companies to skimp on the remote and end up with something bad. While the VAVA remote isn't some shining beacon of design, it's perfectly capable. It's benign. It does what it's s supposed to do, with the right buttons in the right places. Depending on your setup you might not even need it all that often — CEC control worked just fine for me for audio. But If you do need to use the included remote control, you're not going to hate it.

It's a short list

VAVA 4K Ultra Short Throw Projector What I Didn't Like

It's hard to find too many serious complaints about this projector. It does what it does, in the manner in which it's meant to do it. But that's not to say there aren't some things on the negative side of the equation.

Probably the biggest is that there's fan noise. Products like this create heat, and that heat needs to be ejected from said product somehow. And for that, there are fans. And you'll definitely hear the fan on the VAVA projector. There are two noticeable speeds, with faster being demonstrably louder. Having a proper home-theater audio setup mostly took care of that, especially if you have something with a proper subwoofer. It's also worth noting that the heat ejected is, well, hot. I have a computer set up about 4 feet away from the projector, and it was a little uncomfortable to work there when the projector was turned on, because of the warm air being blown directly at me. That's just something to keep in mind.

The other thing in the negative column here wasn't unexpected — the picture you get from projectors just look and feel different than conventional televisions. They're not as bright. Everything just sort of feels softer. On the other hand, the picture is huge . That's the tradeoff, and it wasn't unexpected.

A quick word on gaming: The idea of paying at 100 inches or more is enticing. And, indeed, it's a hell of a lot of fun. But serious gamers need to take into consideration that the VAVA projector tops out at 4K resolution at just 30Hz — that is until you change a hidden setting that allows for higher refresh rates. (Note to every manufacturer ever: Do not hide settings. Ever.) You're still not going to get crazy-fast refresh rates that hardcore gamers demand. But for us casual players? It's maybe good enough.

And while I'm not crazy about the the built-in Android-based operating system, it's functional. But I'd recommend just plugging in anything else. Anything from Roku. An Amazon Fire TV device. (I'm still partial to the Fire TV Stick 4K, which I've been using with the VAVA projector.) Or the NVIDIA Shield Android TV system. Or an Apple TV. Why, when this thing has Android and Aptoide (a third-party app store) already built in? Because I know them, and I trust them, and they'll keep updating their hardware for security reasons. (And I've been burned before .)

If I had my druthers ...

VAVA 4K Ultra Short Throw Laser Projector What I'd do different

What I very quickly learned using this projector is that it's not just like getting a bigger, better television. It really does change the viewing experience, and it really does change the way you want to address that experience.

First off, if you're serious about getting a projector, you're going to want to consider a screen of some sort. There are lots of options at varying prices. You can get something that resembles the old projector screens we saw in school as kids. Or you can get something permanent on your wall. Or you can get something that drops down from the ceiling. Or something that rises up from the floor. It's all a function of how much money you're willing to spend, and how you want things to look and work.

My "TV wall" in my living room is huge. It's the biggest wall in the room. It's perfect for this kind of projector. But it's also 1980s construction, which means that the wallboard is textured, and isn't completely flat. That led to the texture showing throw on lighter backgrounds. And it also made it painfully apparent that the wallboard wasn't completely flat, as seen in the upper-right corner of any picture and video in this review.

But I (and my wife, it should be noted), loved the huge picture, and we loved the look of the large wall with nothing on it or in the way when we weren't watching videos. It's just so much cleaner than having a dark TV or a blank screen. So we'd probably look into a floor-rising screen — or maybe something that drops down. We'd have to think about that. One way or another, though, it'd be an ALR screen — that's short for ambient-light rejecting — to make the picture as good as possible.

But what I'd really do if I was serious about projectors is to redo the wallboard on that wall. We'd make sure it's flush, and something without texture. And then we'd paint it with ALR paint. So the setup would be the same as what you've seen in this review — just better.

We'd also have to do something about the soundbar. I didn't want to put it in front of the projector, because that'd cause the unit to be closer to the wall, and the picture would be smaller. But it also didn't work well behind the projector. So the best options would be to have it fit side the entertainment center somehow (which would require me to have a different entertainment center), or to mount it on the wall, which would be the easier option. (But that also would complicate things if we used a floor-rising screen.)

Should you get it? Yes!

The bottom line

You can go buy this projector and set it up in a few minutes and have a bigger picture. A huge picture. It basically turns your living room (or wherever) into a home theater, and it does so at a price that isn't cheap, but is still attainable if you're serious about this sort of thing. It's not the best projector available, but it's still really good for the price.

The one other concern is something that I can't test here — longevity. Back in the day we'd have to worry about the lifespan of bulbs, and those were not inexpensive. VAVA says its lamp is good for 25,000 hours. That's. 1,401 days, as in on all day for 24 hours a day. That's a little less than three years. Or if you want to do the math, it's about two and half dollars a day. (Again, that's if you're running this thing all day, every day, which you almost certainly won't be.)

But what this whole experiment made me realize is that moving to a projector system isn't the same as just upgrading to a bigger television. You're going to need to consider a screen. (I can't emphasize that enough. Build it in to your budget.) You're going to need to consider your audio situation.

And you're going to need a lot of popcorn. Because you're going to want to watch all the things.

Xiaomi Mi Laser Projector What you'll love

Just when it seemed like the home theater projector fad was over, Xiaomi offers up a game-changer with the Mi Laser Home Cinema Projector. This is the first short-throw projector I've tested, and I'm beyond impressed with the performance and functionality of this hardware.

In terms of technical specs, the Mi Laser Projector is built with Apptronics ALPD 3.0 laser technology along with Texas Instrument's DLP projection tech which allows for an ultra-short throw projection ratio of 0.233:1 — all that to say that this product lets you project up to a 150" screen on practically any flat wall just by setting up the projector just 19 inches away. The laser is damn bright, too, offering up 1600 ANSI Lumens. That means you image clarity, color accuracy, and vivid brightness will be amazing in a proper cinema-viewing setting with the lights turned off, but is still fully capable of being enjoyed in a naturally-lit room cast on a light-colored wall.

Projecting onto a white wall is ideal, but you won't necessarily have to repaint your whole house or invest in a retractable projector screen to accommodate the Mi Laser Projector. I set it up to project onto my light taupe bedroom walls and it looked great with bright and accurate colors. I've personally only used it to run content running at 1080p HD which looked great but it's compatible with 4K HDR content if you're living that life or have been thinking of upgrading to 4K.

It only natively projects at 1080p, though — if you're OK with this, you'll save big money here compared to products offering similar features like the Dell Advanced 4K Laser Projector .

Because the Mi Projector uses lasers instead of an old-school lamp, there's no warm up period required — it actually takes longer for the Android OS to load than it does the lasers to fire up. Lasers can be dangerous if you look directly at them, which is why Xiaomi has included proximity sensors that automatically turn the screen black if it senses anything near the laser setup. This is a great feature if you've got pets or kids that might be keen to investigate this projector up close. Of course, there's a fan running constantly to keep things cool (and it almost churns out enough heat to keep a cup of coffee warm) but it runs quiet enough to not be too distracting when in use.

For connectivity, you get three HDMI 2.0 ports on the back, an Ethernet port for a wired internet connection, 3.5mm audio input and output, a USB 3.0 port on the back and a USB 2.0 port along the side. The projector supports Dolby MS12 and DTS surround sound for all your movie watching and gaming desires and you should be able to connect any existing soundbar or sound system in your home to the projector pretty easily, but you may not see the need to bother. I'm pretty blown away by the quality of the built-in speakers, which are positioned behind the black grill that faces away from the wall. They're capable of getting very loud without distorting at those higher volumes — because what good is a home cinema projector if it can't keep up on the audio side of things, too.

Part of what makes the Mi Laser Projector stand out is Xiaomi's decision to make this projector a standalone product. Inside, there's a T962X Cortex-A53 4-core 1.5GHz process with 2GB of DDR3 RAM and 16GB of flash memory to help it run a mostly stock version of Android TV 8.1, which gives it built-in Cast and Google Assistant functionality. Besides some projector-specific image settings for changing picture mode, keystone correction, and adjusting focus, if you've ever used an Android TV streaming box before you'll feel quite comfortable with the setup here.

For wireless connectivity, everything's pretty standard with 4/5GHz Dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 BLE. The included controller connects via Bluetooth and is made of black and white plastic, which I've found helps it stand out better in the dark, and it also includes a button for summoning the Google Assistant.

Maybe my favorite part about using this projector is how easy it is to move and set up pretty much anywhere you may want to cast a massive HD screen — all you need is the power cable and an HDMI cable to connect to your cable box, game console, or PC. To prove that it's easy to set up, I left it with my parents and they were able to get it up and running no problem with out any help from their tech-savvy son — which is not typically the case when it comes to most newer technologies.

Mi Laser Projector What needs work

The Mi Laser Projector is about as complete a product that I've tested — but not without dealing with some quirky bugs.

Running on Android TV 8.1 means you should get Cast functionality, but I have not been able to get it to work at all from YouTube or Netflix. I made sure everything was connected to the same Wi-Fi network and things would initially start connecting as usual but I've only ever got a connection error from my phone. It's really not a deal breaker for me, since I could just as easily plug a Chromecast into one of the HDMI ports on the back — which is exactly what I did.

It sure is redundant considering the Cast functionality should just work as advertised, but it's still a good workaround for those times when I'd rather just cast something from my phone.

While the U.S. version of the Mi Laser Projector runs on stock Android TV software and is connected to the Google Play Store, I was also quick to notice the lack of native support for some other streaming services I use and in particular the absence Netflix in the projector's version of the Play Store. This was perplexing since Netflix is basically available on anything you own with a screen these days and has always offered great support for Android and Android TV in particular. A Xiaomi PR rep told me it's a known issue being addressed and that they are "still discussing cooperation details with Netflix", whatever that exactly entails. I've been told that users should expect the app to arrive in the Google Play Store sometime later this year as part of an OTA update.

Again, the lack of native Netflix support isn't a big issue for me given that any game console or streaming box I've connected to the projector has some sort of Netflix app installed, but it's something I would expected to see pre-installed on a projector being marketed to a North American audience.

I also watch a ton of YouTube and have found that, for whatever reason, colors get totally washed out in pink when I load up the app for the first time after starting up the projector. This is easily fixed by going into the image settings and switching to a different picture mode. It's a minor annoyance more than anything, but also something that you shouldn't have to put up with using a $1700 product.

Mi Laser Projector Should you buy it?

The Mi Laser Projector is the sort of product that you could build your whole living room around. It's a bold piece of technology that's designed to stand out while also remaining mostly unobtrusive when not in use.

But you're going to use this thing a lot because it's reliably amazing and constantly impresses. If you've considered getting an HD projector in the past but don't love the idea of having to permanently mount it from the ceiling or spend upwards of $3000 for a top-rated product, the Mi Laser Projector is worth the money.

But maybe a flat-screen TV isn't actually the right choice for you. Maybe it's time to consider a projector.

There are pros and cons to each, of course. Here's how I'd look at making your decision.

Why a projector instead of a TV?

I'm a huge fan of projectors. For one, they're just awesome. (I don't need another reason.) For another, you get a whole lot of options when it comes to size. Your TV won't ever get bigger — at least not without buying another one. And then there's the whole thing about operating systems. You can take 'em or leave 'em. I'll leave 'em.

Sheer screen size

If your goal is to get the largest screen size for your space, you'll want to look at a projector. A 75-inch TV goes for between $1,400 and $3,800 , and if you really want to go crazy Sony has a 100-inch TV for $60,000.

Is your jaw picked up from the floor yet? Great! Projectors can get expensive, too — especially if you want something that handles 4K, HDR and the other new whiz-bang features in the home media world. Even then, you're able to get a much bigger picture of your money — Optoma's UHD50 costs $1,400 and can display a 4K image up to 140-inches diagonally — a larger image will result in a lower resolution. If you want something that sits right next to the projector screen, Dell's S718QL ultra-short-throw is available for $6,000 and can produce a 4K image up to 130-inches diagonally.

Dumb displays

It's increasingly rare to find a TV without a smart operating system. This can be great at first — you get easy access to Hulu and Netflix without needing to have an additional dongle. But there are always edge cases. Almost everyone I know with a smart TV still has a streaming stick because their favorite streaming service isn't available on their TV's OS — or navigating the TV's smart interface is slow as molasses. I already own an Xbox One X and a Chromecast , so a TV's smart OS isn't going to do anything I can't already do with that Xbox.

Portability

One of my favorite things to do is move my Viewsonic PX800HD from my living room to my bedroom for a long, big-screened movie session. The projector weighs all of 13 pounds and uses a standard power cable, so getting it moved and set up in my bedroom takes all of two minutes. Then, I just Cast something from my phone and I'm in a world of pure imagination.

That's not as likely with a TV. Because of how heavy and large TVs are, it's much more likely for someone to have a second TV in their bedroom. There's nothing wrong with this, but there's something cool about just moving your projector from one room to the other, and getting a giant screen in a different space. This also makes it easy to take your projector over to a friend's house for game day.

Reasons to consider a TV over a projector

Image quality

If you value raw pixel density, a TV is going to be a better use of your money than a projector. TCL's new TVs offer 4K resolution, HDR-10 support and deep contrast for as low as $650. That Optoma UHD50 at $1,400 will display a much larger image, but as good of a value as that is, it's still more than twice the cost. That's not even factoring in the cost of a screen, a mount, an HDMI switch and other accessories that will be needed. A 1080p projector starts around $500, but these aren't as sharp or vibrant as TVs in the same range.

Space

If you have a giant wall for a projector screen, great! But if not — or if you have other stuff on that wall — a TV is simply a better option. A projector will display a smaller image just by being closer to the wall or screen, but there's no sense in going to all the trouble of mounting and setting up a projector when you could just unbox a TV and put that on a stand.

Smart features

If you like the fact that you can just turn on TV and immediately launch your favorite streaming service, a projector will likely leave you disappointed. Most projectors are marketed towards businesses and home-theater enthusiasts who don't want these smart features. LG has a few projectors with their webOS smart platform and integrated support for over-the-air antennas , but you'll have more options for smart platforms if you're shopping for a proper TV.

Cost

We touched on this before, but it's worth its own paragraph. A projector on its own is going to be at least $500. But it's only part of the equation. You may be able to just project onto your wall, but you'll likely need a screen. This can range from a couple hundred dollars to almost a thousand, depending on how big of a screen you want. As bad as a TV's integrated speakers are, projector speakers are even worse, so budget some money for speakers. You'll also need a mount, a shelf or a stand, adding another $30. It takes a good bit of money for your first projector setup, and if you're not after the absolute biggest screen size it'd be much cheaper to just get a TV.

Pico projectors are a great accessory for camping, even if your campsite is just your backyard. There are a few great projectors out there with a built-in battery so you can take them into the great outdoors and still be able to watch your favorite shows or movies.

One such projector comes from AAXA. Its new P300 Neo projector has 2.5 hours of battery life, and a few options to connect your favorite devices.

I have been using the P300 Neo for a few different occasions over the last three weeks. AAXA provided the projector for review, and it is being returned following the review period.

What ports are on the AAXA P300 Neo?

There's Composite Video/Audio-to-3.5mm adapter, a full-sized HDMI and a Mini-VGA port for getting video to the projector. There's also a USB-A port for playing files from a thumb drive, or for powering a streaming stick.

What's good about the AAXA P300 Neo?

I was kind of surprised when I saw the shipping box the P300 Neo came in — it was no larger than a shipping box for headphones or other small accessory. The projector itself is tiny : it can easily slip into a pocket in your backpack, or even your suit jacket if you really wanted to. It also weighs less than a pound, so it's not adding much weight to your bag.

AAXA includes a few key accessories with the projector as well. The best of these is easily the tripod: it's not particularly fancy, but it'll work well and it's great to see it in the box. You also get a power supply and the aforementioned Composite adapter.

At first, I was upset about the lack of on-device navigation controls. But this led to me to something brilliant: there's a touchpad on top of the projector for pointing around the interface. This took a bit longer to discover than traditional navigation buttons would, but it's much faster to operate than those traditional controls would be.

What's just okay about the AAXA P300 Neo?

The 400 Lumens of brightness doesn't sound very bright, and it's not. It will work well at night, or in my dim apartment. But don't try to use this during the day. AAXA notes that the projector can be used by businesses for presentations, but most brightly-lit offices will preclude that use.

What's bad about the AAXA P300 Neo?

Don't buy the version of the P300 Neo with AAXA's version of Android. There are no Google services on board, and the interface isn't anything special. Most of all, the Android version costs $60 more than the version with a more basic OS. That can still handle image and video files from a USB drive, and you can just use your existing stream stick or other media device.

The projector charges with a barrel-plug charger, and it would have been much better to see USB-C. If you're going to bring this camping, it'd be so much more convenient to be able to charge it from a portable battery, like on similarly priced competitors .

Should you buy the AAXA P300 Neo?

Maybe. Again, don't spend the extra money for the Android version. But the standard version is great — it's compact, 720p is a good-enough resolution for this type of product, and the battery should last through the length of a film. Just don't try to use it during the day time, and you'll be set.

4K projectors are getting better and cheaper every year, to the point where they're well within the budgets of price-sensitive consumers. ViewSonic has been making projectors for years — including my personal favorite PX800HD — and for 2018, they have two models on offer: the PX727-4K and the subject of today's review, the PX747-4K.

The two projectors are near identical: the only difference is the PX747-4K has a slightly different color wheel that allows for a brighter image, at a slight cost to color accuracy. For most consumers, I think the trade-off is well worth it. Everything else remains the same between the models — including the price — so feel free to apply most of this review to the PX727-4K as well.

I have been using the PX747-4K in my apartment for a week for watching movies and TV shows and playing video games. ViewSonic provided this projector for review, and it is being returned following the review period.

What is the ViewSonic PX747-4K?

The ViewSonic PX747-4K is a standard throw projector aimed at those that have a good bit of distance between where the projector sits and where the image will land. It's just bright enough for using it during the day with the blinds open, but closing the shades will lead to a much more enjoyable experience.

ViewSonic PX747-4K What ports are included?

The ViewSonic PX747-4K includes one HDMI 2.0 port, one HDMI 1.4 port, a VGA port, an RS-232 port for remote controls, a miniUSB port for firmware upgrades, a full-size USB-A port to power a streaming stick, a 12V trigger port, 3.5mm audio-in for your VGA device and 3.5mm audio-out to your stereo.

The HDMI-1 port fully supports 4K resolution at 60 frames per second with HDR10, perfect for gamers. That HDMI port also fully supports HDCP 2.2 copy protection, so UHD Blu Rays will play without a hitch. I paired this projector with my Xbox One X for gaming and movie watching, and it worked perfectly. This projector fully supports all of the Xbox's different 4K options, so you can control exactly how your games look.

Because the second HDMI port doesn't support 4K, you'll need an HDMI hub or receiver if you have multiple high-resolution appliances.

ViewSonic PX747-4K What I like

Installation was a breeze for this projector: I set it on a small table pointed towards my wall, plugged in power and the HDMI cable from my Xbox, and I was ready to go. The default color calibration looks great to my eyes as well; nothing appeared to be washed out or overly bright. Avengers: Infinity War and my other UHD Blu Rays were jaw-droppingly good, and even 1080p movies from my Plex server looked better on this than my 1080p projectors.

The speakers were also good, given the size constraints of having them included in the projector. You'll definitely want dedicated speakers if you're using this in a home theater; but if you're bringing this around for business presentations, the built-in speakers will be perfectly adequate.

ViewSonic PX747-4K What's just OK

One interesting — not necessarily good or bad — thing about this projector is it displays its own black frame around the image. That's great if you're projecting it against a bare wall like I am, but it may lead to frustration if you already have a projector screen . Just keep this in mind when you're placing things during installation.

Another thing about this projector — again, not objectively good or bad — is its throw ratio. I knew when I was researching the projector that I'd need as much space as I could manage to get a big "screen" size, since this is a standard-throw projector. With the projector 10 feet away from my wall, I have an 120-inch or so image, which is still larger than a similarly-priced television. But after having my wall completely filled with a projector image for the last year, it's hard to go down to a smaller "screen." Even if it is a higher-resolution image.

But that comes with the territory, and ultra-short-throw projectors are more expensive to make. This isn't a knock against this particular projector, just something to note. What you value in your purchases is up to you; I value a larger screen over higher resolution. Neither of these viewpoints is right or wrong, and there are products for both groups of people.

ViewSonic PX747-4K What I dislike

My only major complaint about this projector is the dearth of HDMI 2.0 ports: having only one on-board will force most users to invest in an HDMI hub or receiver. The target market probably doesn't have any problem with that, but it'd be nice to have more on-board options.

So, who should buy this? If you don't want a ginormous screen like me — or you have a deep enough living room to produce that ginormous screen — then this is a great way to get a 4K image that will out-size any TV on the market. The price is right in line with competitors, installation takes just a few minutes, and the image looks outstanding .

If you're like me and you want to biggest screen possible from the shortest distance, the technology just isn't there yet for 4K ultra-short throw projectors to be this price. You need to weigh how much you value that smaller footprint over how much you'd like the higher resolution. If you choose the higher resolution, the PX747-4K is the best projector to buy right now.

I've slowly acquired new pieces of furniture after moving last summer. It started with just a bed and desk, but when I got my own place I bought a basic futon, a few tables and my first projector, the Optoma GT1080Darbee . But as I filled my living room out more with proper couches and other decorations, having my projector just sitting in the middle of the room made it all feel cramped. I also didn't love having all my cables out in the open for everyone to see. Because of this — and my desire to move into an even smaller space later this year — I was drawn to ultra short-throw projectors, which don't require as much space away from the screen.

One inexpensive — relatively speaking — model that caught my eye is the subject of today's review, the Viewsonic PX800HD. While this retails for $1,300, I was able to find a refurbished model for just north of $800.

What is the Viewsonic PX800HD?

The Viewsonic PX800HD is an ultra short-throw projector that is aimed at anyone looking for a giant screen in a small space. It has a low input lag, making it ideal for console gamers. It also has a secret compartment (more on that later) where you can stow a streaming stick. It outputs at up to 1080p/60Hz, and has a peak brightness of 2000 lumens, which is just dim enough to make me close my blinds when I want to game.

What ports are on the Viewsonic PX800HD?

The Viewsonic PX800HD has some older ports, as well as a couple options. You get three HDMI ports, two VGA ports and a component setup for older consoles and DVD players. There are two 3.5mm audio-in ports to match up with the VGA connections, and a single 3.5mm audio-out for your sound bar. Finally, there's a miniUSB port for firmware updates. (As in, the older, fatter little USB port. Not micro.)

What's good about the Viewsonic PX800HD?

I was a bit confused when I first read the projector featured three HDMI inputs, since the pictures clearly only show two on the back. This led me to discover the most brilliant thing I've seen in consumer electronics in a long time: this projector has a little hatch that comes off with two screws, where you'll find the third HDMI port and a built-in microUSB power cable. Plug in the streaming stick, close the hatch, and now your projector is "smart." And if your streaming stick ever dies, it's only a ~$50 replacement instead of a $2,000 replacement that a smart TV would entail.

Being an ultra short-throw projector means you get a gigantic image from not too far away; I have a 160-inch image from just three feet from my wall. This and the hidden compartment for streaming sticks makes the projector very mobile as well: I regularly move the projector into my bedroom for some intense bedside Netflix.

This highlights another great thing about this projector: it looks great against a bare wall. At least, it does with the shade of paint my apartment complex uses. Since buying the projector, I've taken my proper projector screen down and sold it off. It's that good. The colors were also perfectly calibrated out of the box, though that could be because I purchased a refurb unit.

What's just OK about the Viewsonic PX800HD?

The built-in speakers get loud, but also get distorted a bit easier than I'd like. Speakers need space, and Viewsonic's working against the laws of physics with these. I'm glad they're included, since it makes moving the projector around a breeze. But if you're going to have the projetor in one place for a long time, invest in some proper speakers or a soundbar.

What's bad about the Viewsonic PX800HD?

The only downside to this projector is the peak brightness; 2000 lumens is more than enough for a dark room or nighttime use, but if you try to use it in the daytime with the shades open you're going to be struggling. Fortunately, pulling the blinds closed is all I need to make it look good again.

Should you buy the Viewsonic PX800HD?

Maybe. I love this projector, but my personal feelings are based on the fact that I got so much of a discount. I haven't seen this projector get that cheap again since I bought it, and at $1,300 there may be some competition. Xiaomi's Mi Laser projector is rumored to launch in the U.S. soon for about $1800. That extra $500 gets you smart connectivity (supposedly Android TV when it comes to the States), much better built-in speakers, and a 5000-lumen laser sensor instead of a 2000-lumen lamp.

If you need a projector right now and want something that can be put right next to your wall, this is a great option if you can find it cheaper than the $1,300 it usually goes for. If you can wait a few months for either a price drop or better competition, that's not a bad idea either.

The Anker Nebula Mars II projector. ( $429 at Amazon )

Anker is probably a familiar company for most of you, thanks to the loads of power banks, USB cables and other accessories they sell on Amazon and in some retail locations. Anker has been inching towards other accessories with its sub brands, like Zolo headphones and Nebular projectors.

The Nebula projectors are all about portability: the small Capsule projector is the size of a soda can, while the slightly bigger Nebula series is about the size of a lantern. No matter which size you go for, they include a built-in battery to use when you're away from power.

Anker provided this projector for the review, and I've been using it off and on since it arrived on June 20th. This includes using it inside my apartment during the day and at night, inside a workplace during the day, and outdoors at night.

Inside the box, you'll find the projector itself, the remote with batteries, the manual, and a proprietary power adapter.

The design of this projector reminds me of a lantern; so much that I wish it came in green for my weekend cosplays. The front has a plastic piece to protect the lens; slide this down and the projector will automatically turn on. Right above this are 4 LEDs so you can estimate the battery level. While there is a remote included, all of the controls you would need are also on the top of the projector.

Around back, you'll find the charging port, HDMI-in, USB and 3.5mm audio-out, as well as a reset button and infrared sensor. It's a shame this projector doesn't charge with USB-C, since competing projectors have included that. The fan and vents are also located on the back, and the speaker grills wrap around the other sides. Finally, the bottom has a threaded hole to place the projector on a camera tripod.

Anker Nebula Mars II Features

The Nebular Mars uses Android for its operating system, but it's not Android TV or another familiar variant. Instead, it has been customized by Anker to provide a "big screen" experience with tiles instead of app icons, and other features similar to other TV operating systems. There's no Google Play Store, but mainstays like YouTube, Amazon Video and Netflix are available from Anker's app store. It appears most apps in the store are built for Android TV, so it won't be like you're using an application designed for a smartphone on a 100-inch screen.

The USB port on the back can be used to playback movies from a thumb drive (formatted as fat32), but it can also be used to power a streaming stick that is plugged into the HDMI port. This will shorten the projector's battery life, but you'll still get hours of playback.

Anker Nebula Mars II Experience

The lamp clocks in at 300 lumens, which relegates it to only being used at night. I've tried using this during the day, both for watching movies and presenting materials in meetings. In both cases, it just doesn't get bright enough to see the subject without straining your eyes. Anker isn't really advertising this for business use, but it's worth noting. They do show a photo of someone using it in a living room in daytime, which would just be an unpleasant experience.

Let the sun go down, and it's much better. This projector can produce a 100-inch image when it's placed 10.1 feet from the wall or screen, making it perfect for a campsite or your backyard. There's also automatic keystone correction and focusing, so all you have to do is just place the projector down and let it do the work of making the image look great.

Great, in relative terms. This is a 720p projector, which won't blow you away, but it'll work well enough with all of your media. The projector can accept sources up to 1080p resolution, so leave your UHD Blu Ray rips at home. One more trick up its sleeve: the projector can pair with your smartphone and act as a Bluetooth speaker. The speakers are great given the size, and should be enough to keep everyone happy during movie time.

Using the projector is a treat. It takes just a few moments to boot up, focus, and then start playing whatever media you have. If you're somewhere you have an Internet connection, you can use your favorite streaming services. Otherwise, just plug in an HDMI device or thumb drive and watch your movies that way.

Anker Nebula Mars II Should you buy it?

Maybe. This won't be a good replacement for a home theater system, but if you do a lot of camping or want an easy way to watch movies in your backyard, it's hard to go wrong. I can't overstate how easy it is to just turn on this projector and go — it will focus itself in an instant. Anker has most streaming services covered in their store, and you can sideload any apps that are missing since this is running Android.

I always seem to want a bigger display. I was one of the proud owners of the original (and monstrous) Samsung Galaxy Note , I currently use a giant desktop monitor , and I'm attracted to large sized TV's. Since giant TV's are prohibitively expensive, this led me to the world of projectors . And my first projector was the subject of today's review: the Optoma GT1080Darbee.

I've had the GT1080Darbee in my home for almost a year now. If you're in the market for your first projector — or even an inexpensive upgrade — this is definitely worth a look.

What is the Optoma GT1080Darbee?

The Optoma GT1080Darbee is a short-throw projector that is aimed at gamers because of its low input lag. Even if you don't game, it's still worth a look because of its picture quality and price. It outputs at up to 1080P/60Hz, perfect for console gamers. It has a peak brightness of 3000 lumens, which let me comfortably game even on sunny days with my blinds open.

What ports are on the Optoma GT1080Darbee?

The GT1080Darbee is a bit limited when it comes to inputs, only offering two HDMI ports. You also get a 3.5mm port for audio output, as well as a 3D-sync port and USB-A to power streaming sticks. Finally, there is a mini-USB port for firmware upgrades.

What's good about the Optoma GT1080Darbee?

Because this is a short-throw projector, you don't need a ton of space between it and the screen. I was able to project a 150-inch image from just six feet away. You also don't need to worry about mounting this; just place it on the bottom shelf of a coffee table.

The low latency makes games feel just as smooth as they would on a TV or monitor, and once you get the projector calibrated (more on that in a moment), the colors are gorgeous. While the built-in speakers won't be as good as a soundbar or surround sound system, they're perfectly respectable. The 3000 lumens will mean you can comfortably game even on bright days.

What's just OK about the Optoma GT1080Darbee?

The included remote could be better. All of Optoma's remotes have separate buttons for power on and power off, instead of a unified power button. This is a minor issue if you just use the included remote, but it makes using a universal remote that much more of a pain.

The projector also gets a bit too loud for my liking. This is exacerbated by the projector being placed close to where I'm sitting, but wouldn't be as much of an issue if you mount it on the ceiling. The built-in speaker is loud enough to drown out the fan noise, but it's still something that took me back.

What's bad about the Optoma GT1080Darbee?

The main downside of the GT1080Darbee is the limited amount of ports. If you plan to use this with more than two devices, you'll need to invest in an HDMI switch , or deal with unplugging and replugging your devices.

My biggest frustration with this projector was the out-of-the-box color calibration. I understand that a little bit of color tuning is necessary to get it absolutely perfect , but the default settings led to really washed out pictures. It was bad enough that I couldn't even play some games because I couldn't see some of the in-game objects.

Should you buy the Optoma GT1080Darbee?

Yes! At about $750, this is an inexpensive introduction to the world of projectors. In addition to being inexpensive, this is a genuinely good projector: the high resolution (though not 4K) will make your games and movies pop, and you don't need a ton of space or a mount to get it set up. Playing with the calibration settings is a hassle, but through trial and error you'll be able to make the picture look amazing.

Projectors are cool. That's why we write about 'em. But you know what's really cool? Lasers. And even cooler than that? Laser projectors.

Our pals at Android Central have just reviewed the Xiaomi Mi Laser Projector. It's an $1,800 piece of ultra short-throw projector that's launching in China initially — but supposedly will be headed to the United States at some point, too.

Here's the gist:

While the $1,800 price tag may seem like an awful lot for a Xiaomi product, there's plenty to like in the Mi Laser Projector. It goes toe-to-toe with projectors that cost thrice as much, and the image quality as well as brightness are fantastic.

Xiaomi has stated its intent to launch the Mi Laser Projector in the U.S. at some point this year, so you're better off waiting for the official release. A formal launch would mean Play Services out of the box, negating the need for a standalone Android TV box. Xiaomi is increasingly veering toward services as it looks to grow revenue, so it's possible that the Chinese manufacturer will roll out content initiatives aimed at an American audience at the time of launch.

We're definitely going to keep one eye open on this one if and when it launches over here.

At the end of the day, most projectors are just a dumb display. You can plug in any game console or streaming stick to make it "smart."

Something like Amazon's Fire TV Cube is perfect for a projector since it gives you access to Alexa commands as well. But Amazon says the Fire TV Cube isn't compatible with projectors. So what gives?

The official answer

Officially — from the shopping giant's mouth — the Fire TV Cube does not work with projectors. Do not buy this expecting all of the remote control features to work with your projector.

The reality

Getting down to basics: the Fire TV Cube outputs an HDMI signal. Your HDMI cord carries that signal to the projector, and your favorite Prime TV shows play just as you'd expect. But the Fire TV Cube is not going to be nearly as useful as it would be with most televisions. The Fire TV Cube uses the HDMI Consumer Electronics Control standard — CEC, for short — to control power and volume on your television. No CEC, no controlling the TV from the Fire TV Cube. (It doesn't seem to even try IR with it.)

Very few projectors support the CEC standard. For those that do, actual implementations seem to be hit or miss. The power and volume controls might work, but there's no guarantee it will. If you try to return the Fire TV Cube because it doesn't fully work with your projector, Amazon will probably refuse the return. (So, ya know, find another reason.)

A few words on placement

Amazon also is very clear about where the Fire TV Cube needs to be placed in order for Alexa to pick up your voice. It needs to be out in the open, facing your seating area and at least one foot away from any speakers. If you have all of AV equipment in a cabinet, leave the Fire TV Cube out so it can hear your voice.

So can I use the Fire TV Cube with my projector?

Yes! Just don't be brokenhearted if it can't control your projector, and make sure its placed somewhere the microphones can hear you.

If you've ever seen someone who owns a projector — or if you ever used one in school or at church — they most likely started by rolling down the projector screen . While a projector screen is a good way to make the image pop, it's not absolutely necessary.

Here are things to consider before buying a projector screen!

Just try projecting onto the bare wall

This one's the easiest: just project the image onto your bare wall and see how good (or bad) it looks. If you're happy with the image, awesome! If not, read the manual for your projector. It may have different color settings to account for the color of the wall.

Paint the wall

If you own your home, or if your lease allows you to, you can paint the "screen" onto the wall. You can either just paint the portion of the wall that the projector image will hit, or just paint the entire wall for a cleaner look.

But beware of "ULTRA PREMIUM 8K PROJECTOR PAINT!!11!", or something similar. It probably won't be bad, but you can just use any off-the-shelf paint mixes — or mix your own — for much less money. We've linked some resources below to help you out.

Build your own screen

At the most basic level, a projector screen is just some cloth, a frame and some paint. There are inexpensive projector screens from vendors, but if you're feeling crafty, it's not difficult to make your own screen out of some canvas. You'll have to pay for the materials of course, but it could make for a fun weekend project.
