The 2024-2025 television season has been chock full of medical procedurals and some are better than the others. As The Pitt receives high praise as Max’s first foray into the medical drama space, all eyes have turned to Pulse, Netflix’s own original series. After watching the new medical drama, I can safely say Pulse is more Grey’s Anatomy than The Pitt, but it charts its own course in a crowded field of competition and the heavy drama is sure to raise viewers’ heart rates.

Pulse is the story of Dr. Danielle “Danny” Simms (Willa Fitzgerald), an ER doctor at Maguire. Not only is a hurricane bearing down on the area, forcing the staff to shelter in place with the patients as it sustains a direct hit, but mere hours beforehand the ER staff is rocked by news that their Chief Resident, Dr. Xander Phillips (Colin Woodell) is facing sexual harassment allegations. Not only is Danny named as Xander’s replacement, she’s also the one who filed the claim against him.

With tension at an all-time high, the hospital staff is forced to contend with a busload of soccer players who went over a bridge, injuries from the storm, pregnant women and just about everything else you can imagine. They’re low on power and facing a race against time to help as many people as possible as the conditions worsen.

Pulse’s strength lies in its character development and the relationships between the characters, which it establishes early on in the pilot by allowing the characters to essentially introduce themselves throughout the story. Viewers are not left wondering who these people are for long; the stories connecting them, and the pivotal plot points weaving the past and present together are slowly revealed throughout the season and they make for a richer viewing experience.

My biggest critique is that we find out the claims have been filed against Dr. Phillips early in the pilot episode, but it takes a while to establish what happened. Since we don’t know what happened, it’s hard to tell who to root for. The series cleverly uses the supporting cast to ask the questions as they talk amongst themselves because in their view, the charges don’t make sense; Dr. Phillips is hugely popular and no one wants to believe he did anything wrong. But Danny is very likeable, too, which only makes it harder to understand.

I really appreciated that the characters blended Spanish and English at times, lending credibility to Maguire's location in Miami-Dade County. I liked that not all of the staff members are best friends and that little microaggressions that are a natural part of a high-pressure work environment — like one member of the team dressing better than the rest — are mentioned in a very organic and realistic way.

As medical procedurals go, Pulse is highly watchable and will be an easy choice for Grey’s Anatomy fans looking for something new. In fact, having watched Grey’s for years and after seeing The Pitt, there’s no question that Netflix was aiming for a medical show that could be accessible for younger fans — if they’re watching Grey’s, they can watch Pulse with no problem — while keeping the older demographics happy, too. Netflix’s new medical show delivers plenty of heart-pounding drama to get pulses racing.

In case you needed it yourself, Lamb (Gary Oldman) and company start off Slow Horses season 4 episode 4 with a quick recap of everything that's going on. They determine the man who's after Sam Chapman (Sean Gilder) is a pro, but Chapman doesn't recognize him. When Lamb asks him about Lavande, it clicks for Chapman: this is all about Les Arbres, which houses a team of professional killers. He doesn't want to be debriefed at the Park though, worried they'll lock him up for whatever he did, so instead they take him to Slough House.

Speaking of those professional killers, their leader Frank (Hugo Weaving) meets with his employer: royalty from an unnamed Middle Eastern country who is none too pleased about how Westacres went down. While Frank admits they messed up, his employer simply wants to tie off all loose ends rather than risk the British government finding out about their involvement — meaning killing Frank. Frank says others are already aware something is up, but he can kill them to close the loop. His employer gives him until midnight. So now there is a target and a ticking clock on both Chapman and David Cartwright (Jonathan Pryce).

The history of Les Arbres

As Lamb and Chapman arrive at Slough House, an MI5 car is waiting. Lamb checks it out, discovering Taverner (Kristin Scott Thomas). She's got a general idea of what has happened but has two questions for Lamb: why would someone want to kill David now and where is River (Jack Lowden)? Lamb gives her the bare minimum of information and needles her when he realizes Flyte (Ruth Bradley) hasn't been keeping her up to date on everything going on. She tells him to inform her if either of the Cartwrights shows up.

Inside Slough House, Standish (Saskia Reeves) is waiting and like everyone else is confused by JK (Tom Brooke), though she thinks his fidgeting fingers are his attempt to block something out. She then tells Lamb that David got out. Since he wanted to speak to First Desk, she sent Louisa (Rosalind Eleazar) to keep an eye out for him at the Park. Lamb then tells Standish to join him on the debrief with Chapman.

Chapman explains he went to France once for David, taking a car that was packed full of guns, ammunition, explosives and IDs — MI5's cold bodies. He brought all this to Les Arbres to exchange for a woman. In a flashback we see a young Frank, though Chapman doesn't know his name, only calling him a "scary f***er." As the young woman is leaving, Frank whispers something into her ear that we don't hear, she then slaps him across the face before getting into the car. He recalls she didn't say a word the whole way back to England, then gave Chapman the slip as soon as she could. However, what he really thought was strange was that David didn't seem to care.

With this intel and Standish saying David wanted to speak with First Desk, Lamb pieces together he isn't heading for the Park, but "the old building," the previous headquarters of MI5.

The race to the Cartwrights

Lamb isn't the only one to figure this out. After getting a talking to by Taverner that if she keeps any more information from her Flyte will be fired, Flyte gets a call from "the old building." It has been converted to a hotel but they are still aware enough to let MI5 know when David shows up asking to speak with First Desk. Flyte tells the concierge to keep an eye on David until they get there. So it's a race to the old building as Lamb, Chapman and Standish try to beat Flyte there (who on the way appears to recognize Louisa standing outside the Park).

Meanwhile, Taverner tells Claude (James Callis) they found David and she'll debrief him when he gets to the Park. However, Claude has a surprise for Taverner. He reveals Giti (Kiran Sonia Sawar) got more info on the cold bodies and found Adam Lockhead, the alias used by River's doppelganger. He's angry she kept this from him and says they'll have to have a complete and public investigation into the situation. Taverner calls him a fool, saying their only priority is to find out if another bomb is going to go off, opening themselves up to the public won't do any good. One thing did come of this for MI5 though, as Giti notifies them that Adam Lockhead's passport is on its way back to London, meaning River is on his way back. Taverner calls Flyte and tells her to split her teams to go after both David and River.

Lamb, Chapman and Standish arrive first at the old building. Chapman goes to talk to David while Standish attempts to figure out how to distract the Dogs on their way; Lamb waits in the getaway car. David doesn't immediately recognize Chapman, but even when he does he won't be moved, saying he is waiting for First Desk.

As the Dogs arrive at the hotel, Standish sets off the fire alarm to cause confusion. It works, as the agents walk right by David and Chapman to speak with the concierge. However, when the concierge points out where David was sitting, he and Chapman are gone.

With David in the car, Chapman says he is going to break off, grab his flight fund and head out of the country to avoid prosecution from the Park. However, he's not out of the woods. We saw earlier Frank meet with his assassin, Patrice (Tom Woznickza). He also knows where Chapman stashed his flight fund. He's able to sneak up on Chapman, beating him to get info on where David is and then presumably finishing what he failed to do previously and killing him.

River's unwelcoming return 

On the train, River continues to look at the picture of the mural at Les Arbres on his phone; there's something about it that clearly has him curious.

As the train arrives, Flyte and her team race to intercept River. Frank is also at the station, but hangs back as he spots Flyte. To figure out how the Park is ahead of him, Frank plans to go through the same channel they used to get David's address originally. 

River evades Flyte and her men on the train platform, but they eventually track him down and give chase through the station. River is only able to elude them when he slips onto a metro car at the last second, with the door closing on Flyte and the other agents' faces. Still, Flyte believes she knows where River is going: home.

Home being David's house, where River is able to sneak in. He finds a box of pictures in the house, including drawings that are similar to that of the mural, causing him to say "f**k me." That same sentiment can be applied when he hears Flyte and her team arrive at the house. However, River is able to hide in the attic, seemingly avoiding them. That is until he drops down and finds Flyte waiting for him.

One of What To Watch's favorite TV shows of 2023 is back on Disney Plus and Hulu, and it features a brief voice cameo from a legend of star and screen: Sir Derek Jacobi.

In one of the show's (many!) outrageous moments, Jacobi is heard on a tape found in Jen's "mind library", where he reads out a string of lies Jen's told in bed. We asked series creator Emma Moran about bringing him and the other guest stars into her world.

"It's a mix of like, pride and shame. There's a lot of guest stars, like Julian Barrett and Derek Jacobi that I really respect [who] are great actors and comedians, and then I have to send them the stupidest scripts they've probably ever read", Emma said.

"I feel like apologizing and also thanking them at the same time. Especially Derek Jacobi. They asked me to write some alternatives for the quite filthy lines that he says, and I was just there like, 'I'm disgracing a national treasure by doing this'".

Asked how they managed to rope him in for the part, Emma said: "That's one for the producers, I did not have a hand in that. I just said it'd be very funny if it was someone like Derek Jacobi, and they were like 'Oh, we've got Derek Jacobi'. I was like, 'I was kind of kidding!'"

Emma also spoke to us about how she feels about the show's second installment, and how Extraordinary has developed. "I feel like we've created a nice little world, so it was nice to kind of dive back in. In season one, it was very much like, 'Oh my God, we could do anything'. So to have like, a bit more focus and to be digging a bit deeper into characters, it was just really fun". 

Extraordinary's second season follows Jen (Máiréad Tyers) as she continues to pursue her power. She begins her treatment at the Discovery clinic, where she's partnered up with her new powers coach, George (Julian Barrett), who encourages her to literally dig through her mind and identify any potential barriers that could be stopping her power from manifesting.

While Lowden has shown his softer side as River, a spy with a heart who loves nothing more than a fireside chat with his grandad, he displayed he can also have a harder edge in BBC One hit The Gold.

That saw Lowden play notorious villain Kenneth Noye in the series about the real-life Brink's-Mat robbery.

Daniel Craig also did him a favor by clearly displaying that being fair-haired is no issue when it comes to playing Bond.

However, Bullet Train actor Aaron Taylor-Jonhson remains the favorite for the part. He's headed the betting market for some time, but it's not always the person at the top who ends up becoming the next 007.

Frankie Dettori has spoken in depth on I'm A Celebrity 2023 about why he abandoned his horse racing retirement plans, talking about how much he enjoyed the crowd chanting his name when he landed a race.

The 52-year-old jockey stunned the horse racing world when he announced last year that the 2023 season would be his final in the saddle. And then the Italian-born sporting sensation surprised the racing world even more by telling them he wasn’t retiring anymore in October. Instead, Frankie is heading to America where he plans to continue his riding career.

On last night's I'm A Celeb, Frankie confessed: "I got to the beginning of the season, I thought I’m 52, I’ve had a great life riding, and I'm on the top at the moment. I might as well stop at the top. So I announced: 'Right, this is my last year, going to say my last goodbyes.' Announced it to the world, [then] went to California for four months, smashed it, did really well. Then I came back to England, kept on winning, kept on winning… and I got to August, the season stops in October and I thought, 'I don’t really want to retire!'" 

He added: "You’re winning, the crowd is shouting your name".

Jamie Lynn Spears asked him what he was like racing in top-class class races and whether it was different when he was riding a top horse. He replied: "Of course, like in any sport, when you're at the top level the margins are so small. It's a bit like Formula 1. Why is one driver faster than the other when they've got the same cars?"

He also talked about how he’d grown up in the sport, saying: "I was born in racing, my dad was a jockey. I was practically born on a horse really. Then I had good teachers… the rest is history.”

The clock is ticking for Maddie (Madison Lintz) as she is buried in the desert, putting Bosch (Titus Welliver) into overdrive to get answers and rescue his daughter. So let's not waste any time ourselves and get right into the details of the episode.

Dockweiler's deal 

Dockweiler (David Denman) meets with his attorney, James Rafferty (Bruce Davison), and gives him instructions on the kind of deal he wants in exchange for Maddie's location. Rafferty tells the District Attorney (Jim Holmes) Dockweiler wants full immunity from prosecution, "her freedom for my freedom," as he puts it. The DA can't do that, so Rafferty says Dockweiler would likely plead guilty to kidnapping if they drop the rape charges. The DA will consider it, but Rafferty warns him Maddie may not have long.

Rafferty tries to get Dockweiler to give them some proof of life to help facilitate the deal, but he'll only give that when a deal is in place, emphasizing he is the one dictating terms.

Bosch is itching to get into the room with Dockweiler, but Edgar (Jamie Hector) tells him he has to let them do their job. Bosch says he found dirt and foxtail in Dockweiler's apartment, so the lab should test his clothes to see what they can find.

He then calls Crate (Gregory Scott Cummins) and Barrel (Troy Evans) and has them tail Rafferty.

Proof of life

Maddie checks her surroundings and finds that Dockweiler gave her a bottle of water and there's a small tube letting in some air for her. Also, there's a camera in the box, which turns on and starts recording a live feed.

Mo (Stephen Chang) tells Bosch that Dockweiler cleared most of his data, but left search results for sedatives that last four to six hours, which would give them a search radius of about 300 miles. Mo then notices a link to the live feed of Maddie. Bosch wants to know if he can track the signal, but that would take too much time.

Dockweiler set it up so the live feed was also shared with the police and LA media. Captain Seals (James Read) worries the feed may not be live and just a trick by Dockweiler, but Edgar says they have to go on the assumption that she is alive. Edgar then calls Bosch with the lab results, but Bosch isn't answering as he has a plan of his own.

Going rogue

Bosch calls the police station holding Dockweiler and impersonates an officer to have Dockweiler moved into the interview room. He sneaks into the officer parking lot and uses Maddie's keycard to get into the building and the room with Dockweiler. He immediately gets Dockweiler pinned against the wall and threatens to poke out his eyes with a pen if he doesn't give him Maddie's location. However, Dockweiler just goads Bosch. Edgar gets into the room just in time to convince Bosch to let Dockweiler go. Dockweiler tries to tell others that Bosch assaulted him, but Edgar denies it.

Edgar tells Bosch the lab results showed Dockweiler took Maddie to the desert. But that's only so helpful, so Bosch moves on to his next potential source of info, Rafferty, looping in Chandler (Mimi Rogers) to help.

Maddie isn't just waiting to die. She remembers seeing a fighter jet when Dockweiler stopped to give her a sedative, realizing she must be close to a local air force base. Having managed to uncuff herself, she uses the cuffs to write "EDW" into the wood. However, she has another problem when a scorpion gets into the box. It crawls up her arm and onto her neck, but she is able to move quickly and crush it before it can sting her.

Vasquez (Denise Sanchez), frustrated by not being able to do anything when she's on the clock, goes to Bosch's office when her shift ends. She finds Mo there and offers to help him. When Bosch joins them, they see the "EDW." Bosch realizes that's the airport code for an Air Force base by Joshua Tree and has Mo look up the training flight paths from when Maddie was taken to try and narrow their search. Mo also gives Bosch an envelope as he heads out.

Bosch is going to the hotel Rafferty is staying at to do some digging. Chandler, who already found out Rafferty is a child welfare lawyer who hasn't been practicing in a decade, also goes to the hotel to try and ask Rafferty some more questions. As she talks with him, Bosch uses the manufactured keycard Mo gave him to get into Rafferty's room and look through his files. When Rafferty ends his conversation with Chandler (he's clearly troubled by the situation, but won't violate his client's rights), Chandler gives Bosch a heads up and he is able to just avoid Rafferty and get out.

He reveals Rafferty's files show Dockweiler was adopted after being raised in an abusive religious cult that operated in the desert at a place called Zzyzx. Mo says it lines up with the flight paths. It would take about five hours for Bosch to drive out there, but Chandler can help, arranging for a helicopter and joining him to look for Maddie.

The ticking clock

Edgar talks with Dockweiler. He admits Dockweiler has been ahead of them this whole time, which loosens Dockweiler up enough to give him a hint about where Maddie may be: an hourglass, with sand trickling down to show that time is running out.

That's especially true because when killing the scorpion, Maddie accidentally caused the pipe providing some air to get blocked, so she only has so much time before she runs out. 

Thankfully, Bosch and Chandler arrive on the scene to search for Maddie. They can't find anything in the structures at the site, but when Edgar calls and lets Bosch know he thinks Maddie may be buried underground, Bosch climbs a windmill and finds a tube sticking out of the ground.

He grabs a shovel and rushes to the spot. He breaks open the crate and finds Maddie, passed out but alive. Ultimately, she is going to be OK after some recovery time.

Gran Turismo is not a gaming movie. Nor, despite having Neill Blomkamp in the director’s chair, is Gran Turismo a sci-fi. His latest new movie, all about a gamer-turned-racer, is the closest the self-confessed petrolhead has come to making a sports movie. So far. Based on a real dedicated gaming enthusiast who used his talents to become a professional race car driver, it’s certainly an inspiring story. But does that make it an inspiring film?

Teenager Jann Mardenborough (Archie Madekwe, also in Netflix's Heart Of Stone this week) was a master of the titular PlayStation racing game when he entered a competition offering what was, for him, the ultimate prize; the chance to race with the professionals on some of the most famous tracks in the world. 

After winning the gaming element of the contest, he moves into the reality of motorsport and, with help from veteran engineer and trainer Jack Salter (Stranger Things’ David Harbour), he makes a remarkable rise through the ranks to ultimately compete in the world’s most demanding and celebrated race: the 24 hours of Le Mans. 

Still associated with the innovative style that made his first feature — 2009's District 9, a critical and commercial success — the director has turned in something that surprisingly doesn’t meet the inevitable expectations. For all the buzz and glamour that goes with motor racing, the film is unexpectedly conventional, divided up into neat sections — the gamers’ competition, the Nissan training camp and the move to professional racing — with the captions showing dates and locations, just in case we lose our way. Not that it’s likely.

Where the movie loses its way, however, is in its inability to resist a cliché. That training camp harks back to numerous military movies, with Harbour as the hard taskmaster, and even his character is more than a little familiar. You know the one, the guy with all the talent who never quite made it and hides a softer side under a hard bitten exterior. 

It says a lot for the actor that he also rises above some of the worst dialogue in the film to deliver its best performance, even if his big speech sounds like it was lifted straight from the Bumper Book Of Clichés. There’s the inevitable fiery public rivalry between Jann and a top driver, an oily marketing executive (Orlando Bloom) and the moment of truth, when Jann comes close to giving it all up. 

The gaming aspect fades into the background to such an extent that we need occasional reminders of the story’s origins, making this a racing movie pure and simple. It stands or falls on its racing sequences and, thankfully, they’re up to the job... just. 

There’s some nail biting excitement and a gasp-making accident in sequences that attempt to echo the style of Ron Howard’s Rush (2013). But generally they never quite manage to reproduce the tension and the whiff of gasoline that went with the Hunt v Lauda drama and, once Jann starts racing with the professionals, it falls into the predictable pattern of a competent but unspectacular motor racing movie. Nothing more, nothing less.  

In a year when stories of corporate success have been on the rise — Ben Affleck set the bar high with Air — this is yet another contender or, as Orlando Bloom’s exec exclaims, “This is a marketing extravaganza!” He’s not kidding. Aside from the level of branding that goes with motor racing, it permeates the narrative, with Nissan and PlayStation grabbing the lion’s share. But this time round it’s just basic product placement instead of a look at corporate culture or innovation and increasingly detracts from the inspirational nature of Jann’s story. 

Despite the title and some flashy graphics, you don’t need to be a gamer to watch Gran Turismo. It’s a sports movie, more with racing fans in mind and with a heartwarming human story at its core. Or, put another way, Rocky on wheels. The underdog story, the belief in talent being fulfilled and dreams coming true are all there, but so are the conventions from the film, ones which have been worn out by over-use. For all its youth and promise, Gran Turismo is disappointingly uninspiring.

But none of the movie's acts of naughtiness are as notorious as the park-set seduction by manipulative schoolgirl Kathryn Mertueil (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and the woefully naive Cecile Caldwell (Selma Blair), during which the former teaches the latter how to French kiss. Kathryn does such a thorough job, in fact, that Gellar and Blair won the GOAT: Legendary Lip Lock Award during the MTV Movie & TV Awards: Greatest of All Time special more than two decades later in 2020. 

Ghost

Leave it to Patrick Swayze to make ceramics hot. In the hands of anyone else, Ghost's most famous scene — which sees a shirtless Swayze as Sam Wheat join girlfriend Molly Jensen (Demi Moore) behind a sculpting wheel, their clay-covered limbs becoming further and further entwined as The Righteous Brothers harmonize from a jukebox — would be eye-rollingly cheesy. Instead, it's deeply erotic, a voyeuristic peek into the nature of their romance before things get, well, supernatural. 

The Notebook

"It wasn't over. It still isn't over!" Noah Calhoun (Ryan Gosling) roars at Allie Hamilton (Rachel McAdams) under a deluge of Carolina rain, proving the veracity of his words with a searing kiss that warms the soaked-through pair. It was a dam-breaking not only for the characters but allegedly for the actors playing them, who went on to date for two years. "When that door got unlocked, I didn’t need to direct nothing. These kids were on each other," director Nick Cassavetes revealed to Rotten Tomatoes. "I think that was the moment, because they weren’t together before that kiss. But they were together after that kiss.” We can certainly see why. 

Disobedience

It's another scorcher from Rachel McAdams, though this time she's paired with Rachel Weisz, as two Jewish women reckoning with romantic feelings for each other amidst the ultra-conservative Orthodox religion. There are several snogs between Esti and Ronit in Sebastián Lelio's Disobedience, but one in particular is a spit take, literally, with Weisz's Ronnie dripping saliva into Esti's mouth while they're making love. It's explicit, sure, but it's also incredibly intimate, signaling the depth of the connection between the two. 

Titanic

Talk about the ultimate '90s swoon: Leonardo DiCaprio as Jack Dawson and Kate Winslet as Rose DeWitt Bukater sharing their first kiss during sunset at the majestic bow of the Titanic while "My Heart Will Go On" softly croons in the background. It's a moving, sensual kiss as fittingly epic as the movie that surrounds it, fully selling the level of devotion that the young pair conjures up during their tragically short time onboard.

Brokeback Mountain

The sheer intensity of that long-delayed reunion kiss between forbidden lovers Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger) is written all over Michelle Williams' face. Ennis has been waiting ever-so-impatiently for his old sheep-herding buddy to arrive for a visit, so much so that when he does he can't resist racing down the steps and meeting Jack outside, where they share a feverish and secret lip-lock — or so they think. 

Crazy, Stupid, Love

Yes, Ryan Gosling again, but in Crazy, Stupid, Love, he's more the smooched than the smoocher. That would be Emma Stone, whose ticked-off, rain-soaked Hannah takes Gosling's Jacob by surprise when she interrupts his conversation and impulsively plants a big one on the lad in the middle of a bar. "Do you remember me? Do you still find me attractive? Do you still want to take me home?" she asks him when they finally come up for air, and his breathless responses are hilariously and understandably limited to one word: Yes.

Call Me By Your Name

Few characters have felt desire as fervently on film as Timothée Chalamet's Elio Perlman does for Armie Hammer's Oliver in Call Me By Your Name. The sexual tension between the two young men is damn-near suffocating in Luca Guadagnino's coming-of-age charmer, fueling long summer days of swimming and dancing and the shortest of short shorts, until finally, in a sun-soaked field found "somewhere in Northern Italy," Oliver finally gives Elio what he craves: a kiss as sweet and tender as a ripe peach.

From Here to Eternity

Often parodied but never equaled, the sandy embrace between Sergeant Milton Warden (Burt Lancaster) and another officer's wife Karen Holmes (Deborah Kerr) is one of celluloid history's most unabashedly romantic moments. Soundtracked by George Duning's soaring score, the famous beach scene finds the pair passionately lip-to-lip while lying down in the Hawaiian surf (which, as cinematic legend has it, was Lancaster's idea, much to the chagrin of those 1950s censors). When Karen gasps, "I never knew it could be like this. No one ever kissed me the way you do," you believe her.

Spider-Man

The first of the Spider-Man movies also features its finest make-out moment (no offense, Tom Holland and Zendaya.) The so-called "Spider-Man kiss" became a pop-culture phenomenon, not only for its novelty — in thanks for saving her life, Mary Jane (Kirsten Dunst) macks on the friendly neighborhood superhero (played by Tobey Maguire) while Spidey is hanging upside down, pulling his mask off just enough so she can gain access to his lips — but also for its palpable heat.

A little over 40 years ago, the charismatic and hugely talented Canadian Formula One driver Gilles Villeneuve lost his life at the age of 32 when he collided with another car during qualifying at the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix. 

Now, this feature-length documentary, Villeneuve Pironi: Racing's Untold Tragedy profiles Villeneuve’s career, and examines his turbulent relationship with his ambitious Ferrari teammate, Frenchman Didier Peroni. 

The film includes interviews with former F1 drivers and mechanics, along with memories from Villeneuve’s widow Joann and their children, Jacques and Melanie.

Interview with Joann Villeneuve

Joann Villeneuve shares memories of her F1 driver husband Gilles, who died after crashing at the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix.

Joann and the children travelled from circuit to circuit with Villeneuve in the family motor home, but she was not at the Zolder track when the tragedy occurred because the race clashed with Melanie’s confirmation. On the day, she heard the news via a telephone call she will never forget. 

"Jody Sheckter [Villeneuve’s former Ferrari team-mate] called me to say Gilles had had a very serious accident," she recalls. "But my brain could not accept it, and I just kept thinking: 'He’s going to be okay.'"

Villeneuve had crashed while trying to beat Pironi’s lap times during qualifying and died of his injuries in hospital. The film questions whether a feud between the two former friends, when Pironi allegedly disregarded team orders to pass Villeneuve and win the previous Grand Prix at San Marino, may have been a factor in the tragedy.

Joann admits that, at the time, she did attach some blame to Pironi, who suffered serious injuries in another crash at Hockenheim later that season, and whose life was cut short in a power boat racing accident in 1987. 

"But you have to walk away from those emotions and feelings," she says, "because they’re just destructive."

Having suffered the loss of her husband, Joann faced another huge challenge when her son Jacques decided that he wanted to follow his father into the sport.

"It’s probably one of the most difficult decisions I ever had to make," she recalls. "You don’t want to crush his dream. And how could I say no to him when I had lived that life with his father?"

Had Villeneuve senior survived, she knows he would have absolutely loved seeing Jacques fulfil his father’s dream of becoming Formula One world champion in 1997.

"His dream was to one day race with his son," she says. "He would have been extremely proud."

This review contains spoilers for 1883 episode 9, "Racing Clouds."

The first scene of 1883’s episode 1 premiere was Elsa (Isabel May) waking during an attack by a tribe of Native Americans — a flashforward glimpse of the dangers that lay in store for these characters. Well, after eight episodes the bill is due — and the narrative catches up with this moment in "Racing Clouds."

Things pick up as the wagon train moves on from the plains but, as Elsa points out in her narration, the land is no less forgiving. "This place doesn’t want inhabitants at all … This land hates. It hates us," she says. On cue, a rattlesnake pops out, causes Josef’s wife Risa (Anna Fiamora) to be thrown from her horse and then bites Josef (Marc Rissmann). They need medical attention, but that’s only part of the problem.

Dutton (Tim McGraw), Shea (Sam Elliott) and Thomas (LaMonica Garrett) find a group of murdered Lakota women and children. They know Lakota warriors will come searching for the people responsible and, now that their tracks are at the scene, they’ll likely be blamed unless they can find the killers. The trio agrees to hunt down the murderers themselves.

Before riding off, Dutton tells the wagon train to stay put. Cookie (James Jordan) has other ideas, heading to the nearest fort for protection. With the fort also having the benefit of a doctor, the immigrants decide to go with them. This forces Margaret (Faith Hill) to take Elsa and John (Audie Rick) with the rest of the wagon train. Before they leave, Margaret tells Elsa to put on a dress — the white dress she puts on is recognizable as the one from the flashforward scene.

Dutton, Shea and Thomas find the murderers, who admit they killed the Lakotas to draw the warriors out and kill them too. They won’t get the chance. Dutton, Shea and Thomas, despite being outnumbered, easily kill them all.

As we head back to the wagon train, the episode kicks into high gear. Cookie starts to pull ahead, which is a problem since he’s the only one who knows where they’re going. Elsa rides up to tell him to slow down but finds that his wagon has been set on fire by the Lakota warriors, who have caught up with them. After killing Cookie they chase after Elsa. Wade (James Landry Hébert) tells the wagons to circle up and get ready to fight — a few scatter though. Elsa decides to ride away from the circled wagons to draw some Lakotas away. But she doesn’t get too far, as a Lakota swings a club at her and the scene cuts to black.

The next scene plays out almost identically to the opening moments of the first episode — Elsa wakes, gets a gun and kills a Lakota but is shot with an arrow in the process. She continues shooting at the other warriors even though it’s clear she can’t kill them all. What's new is that as they are about to kill her she speaks some of the Comanche that Sam taught her, which stops the Lakotas. Elsa explains what happened with their families and that her father is after the men responsible. The Lakotas accept this answer and leave.

Margaret, Wade and Noemi (Gratiela Brancusi) help remove the arrow from Elsa's arm, while Colton (Noah Le Gros) looks for any other survivors. He finds one, a woman who has been scalped but is still alive and screaming. He says aloud that she deserves peace and shoots her, then immediately starts digging her grave. Shea finds him later, distraught, but tells him whether right or wrong he has to stand by his decision.

Dutton ran into the Lakotas and both sides filled each other in on what has happened. He watches over his wounded daughter, explaining that the danger for her is getting an infection, the key sign being her having a fever. Though Elsa says she feels fine, Dutton talks with Margaret and is brutally honest with his wife — Elsa is going to die. He says they will leave the wagon train and keep her alive as long as they can (opting not to go to a doctor so she can enjoy her final days rather than be doped up). Wherever she passes away will be the place the family settles. Dutton promises Margaret that he will find a place worthy of this decision.

The next morning, Elsa says she feels a little feverish, but Margaret tells her she is fine, not even attempting to put any kind of restrictions on her daughter. If that wasn’t a red flag enough, Elsa says in narration that looking at her father she can tell by his look — she knows she is going to die.

The first half of "Racing Clouds" is all about getting us to the back half of the episode — even making Josef and his wife an afterthought almost immediately (one of 1883’s most consistent issues). That back half, though, presents what could be a massive change for 1883 before it heads into its newly ordered season 2. Will the show pull a Game of Thrones and kill one of its main characters this early? If they do, where will the show go from there? There are some exciting options in-store, for viewers, that will make the wait for the season finale even more difficult.

Saturday nights are going to be a lot faster on CBS in 2021. The network today announced that CBS Sports and Superstar Racing Experience will produce a six-race short-track series in the summer of 2021. The races will air in prime time on CBS and on its streaming arm, CBS All Access.

The series is being created in part by NASCAR Hall of Famers Ray Evernham and Tony Stewart.

“SRX is a series where the cars will be so evenly matched that talent instead of equipment will win the race,” Stewart — who has won the NASCAR Cup Series three times and also also the 1997 INDYCAR Series title — said in a news release. “The competition will be intense, and thanks to the vision of such strong leaders in the sports and entertainment industry, millions will be able to watch live and in primetime on CBS.”

Evernham echoed that sentiment.

“We’ve set this up to bring the focus back to the drivers and their ability to compete head to head as opposed to the car deciding who wins," he said in the release. "That’s going to create a unique dynamic for fans at the track and everywhere else. Adding superstar-caliber drivers and our unique racing features, you’re going to see all kinds of emotions playing out live. It’s going to be quite exciting and rekindle why a lot of people love short-track racing.”

Stewart and Evernham each will compete in the races, which will be designed to fit into a 2-hour window and will visit various short tracks around the country.  There won't be any pit stops, but races will have a "halftime" for adjustments.

In addition to the race (which itself should take about 90 minutes), the broadcast will include a good bit of "behind-the-scenes and human drama that comes with high-intensity competitions."

No word yet on exactly when to expect the series, other than sometime in the summer.

Thank god for gamers. In a time in which live sports have completely shut down, we're left with a few scant options for something that resembles the sports world just a few short weeks ago.

That brings us to iRacing, which is exactly what it sounds like. Or, more specific, we're talking about the eNASCAR iRacing Pro Invitations Series, which pits your favorite drivers against each other on virtual tracks. It's video game auto racing.

And, frankly it's pretty darn good. In fact it's entirely possible that were you to be flipping channels and land on a race and see the cars working their way around the track, and the usual announcers doing their thing, you might not even realize that what you were watching wasn't 100 percent real. (OK, it is real, just really virtual, and not the usual sort of NASCAR with the usual sort of jeopardy.)

The difference, of course, comes down to physics. It's not that video games — we really should call what's going on here more of a group simulation, though — haven't figured out the physics, because any who's played any sort of racing game the past five or 10 years knows just how good things have gotten. It's just that once you know you're watching a virtual car driven by a real driver, the hits and the slides and the skids just aren't quite the same. There's something just enough off about it to remind you that your'e watching a computer do its thing, instead of man.

That said, you have to appreciate the fact that they didn't fill the stands with virtual spectators. And while there are still cautions — which on its face seems silly since any damage is virtual and any debris on the track could be cleaned up with the click of a mouse — the rules have been changed a bit to allow the yellow flag to be waved off. More racing is always better.

What else is different?

We'll start with a two-lap qualifier to determine the lineup for the heat races. Odd finishers will be in Heat 1, and even finishers will be in Heat 2. Each heat race runs 50 laps. Nobody's eliminated, but the heat races will set the grid for the 150-lap main event.

VIrtual pit stops are, of course, virtual. But where things get interesting is that drivers will get "resets" — one in the heats, and one in the main event. A "reset". means the driver goes back to their pit stall and comes to a complete stop, which basically reset the car, giving the driver a new ride.

How to watch the eNASCAR iRacing Pro Invitational Series

This week's race is the Food City Showdown at the virtual (but still iconic) Bristol Motor Speedway. The green flag drops at 1 p.m. Eastern time (that's 10 a.m. on the West Coast), and you'll be able to watch the race on Fox, FS1 and in the Fox Sports app.

Fox and FS1 are available on every major streaming service. The Fox Sports app is available on Android and iOS platforms, as well as major gaming platforms.

NASCAR racing fans have been without their favorite sport since the COVID-19 pandemic led to cancellations across the entire sports world, but now they can watch their favorite drivers compete behind the wheel again. After a successful debut this past weekend, Fox has announced that it will air the remaining eNASCAR iRacing Pro Invitational Series season on Fox, FS1, and the Fox Sports App.

The eNASCAR iRacing Pro Invitational Series has so many of the things fans love about regular NASCAR races, and that is by design. This may be an eSports competition, but it has real NASCAR racers from all the different Series, including Joey Logano, Dale Earnhardt Jr., and Ty Majeski. The simulation will put many drivers inside of digital versions of their signature cars they use on the CUP Series races, including the same numbers and sponsors. They will also race on digital versions of famous tracks, including this week's race from a virtual Texas Motor Speedway.

While the Pro Invitational Series is new, as a response to the inability to race in front of fans right now, NASCAR and iRacing have been partners for years. The eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series is in it's 11th season, with professional eSports racers competing in live streamed races. The Pro Invitational series kicked off on March 22, and it scored big with over 900,000 viewers watching the first race on FS1. In this strange world without live sports, Fox was clearly pleased with this result since they moved to a wider simulcast on Fox, FS1 and the Fox Sports app starting this Sunday, March 29 at 1 p.m.

The SIM racing gear that the drivers use varies, with some using a simple steering wheel and gear shift connected to a laptop, while others use very cool full simulators, with wrap around screens, custom chairs and gauges. Check out Denny Hamlin's gear, which he gave a glimpse of on Twitter.

The schedule for the remaining races in the eNASCAR iRacing Pro Invitational Series should be released soon. It is safe to expect these eSports races to continue at least until NASCAR has a better idea when traditional races can resume.

Inaugural FOX NASCAR iRACING Event Draws More Than 900,000 Viewers

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Last Sunday, NASCAR, iRacing and FOX Sports teamed up to deliver the first-ever eNASCAR iRacing Pro invitational Series event. Today, FOX Sports is committing to coverage of the remainder of the season, beginning Sunday, March 29, at 1:00 PM ET live from virtual Texas Motor Speedway. Entitled FOX NASCAR iRACING, the races will be simulcast on the FOX broadcast network*, FS1 and the FOX Sports app. Races will be available in Canada through FOX Sports Racing.

Last Sunday's inaugural event, won by three-time Daytona 500 winner Denny Hamlin, drew 903,000 viewers on FS1, according to Nielsen Media Research. FOX SPORTS iRACING was the most-watched telecast on FS1 since the pandemic-induced sports shutdown began on March 12 and Sunday's most-watched sports telecast on cable television, as well as ranks as the highest-rated esports TV program in history.

Additionally, according to rankings by Twitter interactions, the eNASCAR iRacing Pro Invitational Series on FS1 was the #1 most-social TV program overall on Sunday. NASCAR-owned content related to the event also produced more than one million engagements throughout the weekend.

"This rapid-fire collaboration between FOX Sports, NASCAR and iRacing obviously has resonated with race fans, gamers and television viewers across the country in a very positive way," said Brad Zager, FOX Sports Executive Producer, EVP/Head of Production & Operations. The FOX NASCAR broadcast team of Jeff Gordon, Mike Joy and Larry McReynolds continues to call the action from FOX NASCAR studios in Charlotte, with NASCAR CUP SERIES driver Clint Bowyer providing "in-car" commentary.

"The response on social media to last Sunday's race has been incredible," Gordon said. "We were able to broadcast a virtual race that was exciting and entertaining. It brought a little bit of 'normalcy' back to the weekend, and I can't wait to call the action Sunday at Texas."

Under the banner FOX NASCAR iRACING, FOX Sports covers simulation-style esports races that include a cross-section of competitors from the NASCAR CUP SERIES, NASCAR XFINITY SERIES, NASCAR GANDER RV & OUTDOORS TRUCK SERIES and a group of NASCAR dignitaries.
