Nobody does romcoms quite like JLo. She's the queen of the genre, giving us all those essentials — the laughter and tears, the glamour, the heart, and the happy ending — and she delivers with such charisma that they’re hard to resist.

Despite forays into more dramatic roles, she’s never far away from another heartwarming romance and one of her most popular has landed on Netflix today [Sunday, August 10] in the US. Marry Me (2022) has the ultimate meet cute.

Lopez is Kat, a global singing sensation and half of a super-glam power couple. She and Puerto Rican superstar Bastian (Maluma) are getting married, but this will be no ordinary ceremony.

They’ll perform their latest hit, “Marry Me”, at Kat’s concert and exchange vows in front of countless fans, both at the venue and on numerous platforms around the world. That’s the plan, but it all goes out of the window when, seconds before the ceremony, Kat discovers Bastian has cheated with her assistant.

With her life crumbling in front of her, she looks into the audience and locks eyes with Charlie (Owen Wilson), a divorced maths teacher who’s been dragged along to the concert by his daughter.

And Kat decides to marry him there and then. Her split-second decision turns into romance, but coming from such different worlds, their future soon begins to look rocky...

The ending is all-too-obvious, but the movie is smart enough to make their relationship burn appealingly slowly, so we’re given the chance to get to know the unlikely couple and get behind their efforts to make it work. The odds may be stacked against them, but we’re backing them all the way, so it’s tissues at the ready.

And audiences fell in love almost as heavily, giving it a heartwarming 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics weren’t quite as enthusiastic, but it’s since become a regular in their top five JLo romcoms.

It's a favorite all round. And it’s not hard to see why. The premise is sweet, the title track sticks in your memory, and the script gives Lopez an opportunity to flex her acting muscles with some heartfelt scenes about life in the public eye.

For somebody whose leading men have included Matthew McConaughey, Ralph Fiennes and Richard Gere, Owen Wilson’s ramshackle teacher is a change in style, but she has chemistry not just with him, but Maluma as well.

Aside from starring in romcoms and producing many of her own movies, Lopez has been steadily building a reputation as a dramatic actress. Marry Me was her first film since Hustlers (2019), which saw her play the brains behind a group of streetwise former strippers who decide to turn the tables on their sharp-suited clients.

Described by many as a "career best performance", it attracted some Oscar buzz but, when the nominations were announced, the Academy looked the other way, even though she received Golden Globe, SAG and Critics’ Choice nods.

More recently, she was back in another strong dramatic role, this time in Unstoppable (2024), playing the tower-of-strength mother in the true-life story of wrestler Anthony Robles.

But her squillions of romcom fans won’t have to wait too long to see her back where she belongs in Office Romance, which is due on Netflix sometime next year. This time she’s teamed with Brett Goldstein, and there's a heavy-hitting cast including Jodie Whittaker, Tony Hale, Edward James Olmos, and Bradley Whitford all in support.

She plays a company CEO who finds herself in danger of breaking her own company’s anti-fraternization policy – and, judging from the on-set photographs, the reason is pretty obvious. The actress whose name spells romcom paired with Ted Lasso’s grumpy Roy Kent? We can’t wait for that meet cute!

Marry Me is on Netflix in the US from 10 August and on Prime Video in the UK.

Netflix has added My Oxford Year, the perfect summer romantic movie.

Based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Julia Whelan, it stars Sofia Carson as ambitious American Anna, who follows her childhood dream of studying at Oxford for a year-long graduate programme.

But when sparks fly between Anna and charming poetry professor Jamie (Corey Mylchreest), their relationship threatens the meticulous postgraduate life and career she planned for herself.

It's directed by Iain Morris, who wrote and created the hit British sitcom The Inbetweeners.

Sofia Carson, who is best known for the Disney musical-fantasy movie Descendants and its sequels, says: "Iain wrote and created one of the most iconic shows in British Television.

"Comedy is his language, so his vision of this film beautifully created a timeless, heartbreaking, sweeping romance, but grounded in laughter. Within one scene, you may fall in love, you may cry, but he will always make sure the joy of laughter is present.

"Our story reaffirms the belief that life's too short to not live it in love, to not live in joy. And I hope that truth rings true in the hearts of anyone who watches it."

The all-star cast includes Dougray Scott and Catherine McCormack, alongside Harry Trevaldwyn, Poppy Gilbert and Hugh Coles.

Sofia, who also acted as executive producer on the movie, knew she wanted Corey Mylchreest to play Jamie as soon as he came in for a chemistry read.

"He's an extraordinary force of an actor," she says. "When it came time to cast Jamie, I knew it would be Corey. As soon as he walked into the room for our read in London, Anna and Jamie came to life instantly.

"Together, we were dedicated to diving into Anna and Jamie's love story, to bring it to life with every bit of our hearts."

The book it’s based on

"My Oxford Year" was first published in 2018. It was the debut novel by Julia Whelan, who's also known for her acting, having appeared in the TV series Once and Again from 1999 to 2002. Whelan also wrote "Thank You For Listening: A Novel", which, according to Amazon, "tells the story of a former actress turned successful audiobook narrator — who has lost sight of her dreams after a tragic accident — and her journey of self-discovery, love, and acceptance when she agrees to narrate one last romance novel".

In the Eternity trailer, the upcoming movie from A24 that is earmarking a TBD November release date, Elizabeth Olsen’s recently deceased character has to decide which of the two loves of her life she wants to spend eternity with in the afterlife.

Thankfully, moviegoers won’t have to make such a finite choice in what movies to watch in November, which to my eyes, is looking like the best month of new movie releases we’re getting this year.

Starting with Eternity, the movie hails from A24, the specialty studio that has a passionate base of moviegoers that will see just about anything they put out (of which I am one). But beyond its label, Eternity looks like a fantastic blend of comedy, romance and fantasy, with three fantastic actors leading the way, what looks like fun supporting turns from Da’Vine Joy Randolph and John Early and a unique, original premise.

If that doesn’t look like something you’re interested in buying a movie ticket for, great news, the November movie release schedule has a variety of genres that will satisfy just about anyone, with plenty of big name stars attached. Let’s break them down in order of their current US release date (some may be limited release initially).

Die, My Love

In the dramatic category is Die, My Love (November 7), starring Jennifer Lawrence, Robert Pattison, LaKeith Stanfield, Nick Nolte and Sissy Spacek, directed by Lynne Ramsay. The movie follows a woman struggling to maintain her sanity amid a variety of issues living in a rural area. Ramsay is a singular filmmaker, and Lawrence is earning some buzz that could see her earn her first Oscar nomination since 2016.

I Wish You All the Best (November 7)

I Wish You All the Best (November 7) is a coming-of-age indie drama featuring the likes of Alexandra Daddario, Lena Dunham and Cole Sprouse that has a handful of reviews, putting it right now at a 100% “Fresh” score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Nuremberg (November 7)

For those interested in history, particularly World War Two, Nuremberg takes place after the world, when a psychiatrist interviews Nazi leaders ahead of the Nuremberg trials, including Hermann Göring. Russell Crowe is playing Göring, with Rami Malek, Richard E. Grant, Michael Shannon, Leo Woodall, Colin Hanks and John Slattery also starring.

Predator: Badlands (November 7)

We’re getting the latest in the Predator franchise with Predator: Badlands. Prey director Dan Trachtenberg directs this new movie, which takes a different approach than past movies in the Predator franchise, as the iconic movie monster is actually going to be the hero of the story, with a young member of the species embarking on a dangerous first hunt. Elle Fanning also stars as a wise-cracking android.

The Running Man (November 7)

Edgar Wright, the fan-favorite director of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, and one of Hollywood’s newest and biggest stars Glen Powell team up for The Running Man, a new adaptation of the Stephen King novel about a reality TV show in the future where the goal is for contestants to survive 30 days as they are literally hunted.

Sentimental Value (November 7)

For fans of international movies, Sentimental Value is going to be the movie to keep an eye out for, as it reunites The Worst Person in the World team of Renate Reinsve and Joachim Trier. Stellan Skarsgård and Elle Fanning also star in this story of an artistic family that has to explore their memories and relationships as the father tries to make a new film.

Train Dreams

Train Dreams is getting a run in movie theaters before it premieres on Netflix later in the month (November 21). But wherever you watch it, the movie comes from the team behind the brilliant and Oscar-nominated movie Sing Sing. Train Dreams stars Joel Edgerton and Felicity Jones and tells the thoughtful and visually gorgeous looking story of a family at the turn of the 20th century.

That’s just the first week.

Jay Kelly (November 14)

Jay Kelly is another Netflix Oscar hopeful getting a theatrical release before premiering on the streamer. This one comes from Noah Baumbach and has the incredible cast of George Clooney, Adam Sandler, Laura Dern, Eve Hewson, Isla Fisher, Riley Keough, Patrick Wilson, Emily Mortimer (who also co-wrote the script with Baumbach), Billy Crudup and Greta Gerwig in a comedy/drama story about a movie star and his manager.

Keeper (November 14)

Then we get the latest thrill from Osgood Perkins (Longlegs, The Monkey) in Keeper that sees a couple’s romantic getaway become haunted by the haunting past of the property they’re staying at.

Now You See Me: Now You Don't (November 14)

With Now You See Me: Now You Don’t magic is back, and so is the original cast of the popular franchise, as Isla Fisher reunites with Jesse Eisenberg, Dave Franco and Woody Harrelson. They’re joined by new additions Justice Smith, Dominic Sessa and Ariana Greenblatt in trying to pull off a heist of Rosamund Pike’s villain.

Rental Family (November 21)

Brendan Fraser also returns in his first leading role since his Oscar win for The Whale with Rental Family. The story sees Fraser play an actor that is hired by a Japanese company where people can rent out family members to be stand-ins for specific events (something that is actually a real thing in Japan).

Sisu 2 (November 21)

Action fans will likely be stoked that a sequel to a cult favorite from the last few years arrives in November, as Sisu 2 picks up the story of the ex-soldier who plows through Nazis as he attempts to secure a fortune he’s procured. It’s like a World War Two John Wick.

Wicked: For Good (November 21)

Probably the biggest movie of the month will be Wicked: For Good, the concluding act of Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda’s (Ariana Grande) story that started with the smash hit Wicked last year (and my top movie of 2024). Can the sequel repeat that success?

Zootopia 2 (November 26)

Closing the month out there is the ideal family friendly option in Zootopia 2, the sequel to Disney’s popular animated movie that brings back Jason Bateman as Nick Wilde and Ginnifer Goodwin as Judy Hopps, along with a new roster of voice stars.

Hamnet (November 27)

Hamnet, the latest from Oscar-winning director Chloe Zhao that stars Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley as William Shakespeare and his wife Agnes as they deal with a personal tragedy away from the stage. This one may arrive in December for most audiences.

Who knows, there may still be a movie or two that gets added to the month (be it on streaming or in theaters).

While I’m definitely looking forward to a number of 2025 new movies in the coming months, but November looks like a movie fan’s paradise.

Too Much is a romantic comedy series on Netflix set in London and starring Megan Stalter, Will Sharpe.

The series, which was created by Girls star and Catherine Called Birdy writer Lena Dunham and her husband Luis Felber, follows New York workaholic Jessica Salmon, who, while still reeling from a break-up, decides to move to London to live a life of solitude, ‘like a Bronte sister’.

However, Jess's big move isn't quite the fairy tale she was hoping for, and life throws her a curveball when she meets Felix Remen, a trauma-ridden, wannabe musician who sleeps with any woman who stays in the bar past closing time.

Will the path of true love ever run smoothly for the pair? Here is everything that happened in episode 4...

The fourth episode opens with a flashback to Jess in bed with her ex, Zev, and he is telling her that he's got a secret that he's never told her because he's been scared she will dump him. She is nervous about what he is going to say, until he confesses his Bar Mitzvah was Weezer-themed. She thinks this is hilarious and he starts singing one of the band's songs to her, and they look really loved up.

In the present day, Jess is in bed with Felix, and she watches him while she is sleeping. They spend the morning in bed together and she asks him about his tattoos, which Felix claims don't have any significant meaning. There is one on his bum that says Poly - which he claims he got with his friend Polly on holiday in Portugal but the woman spelled it wrong. Jess jokes that she thought it stood for polyamorous - and soon Felix gets confused between the meaning of polyamory and monogamy and Jess starts to see red flags waving at her.

Jess calls her mom on the way to work to tell her she's met someone. Lois asks her all about what Felix does, and soon Jess is spilling all his secrets about past drug abuse and doesn't understand why she is being so honest, but Lois says that is the 'mom effect'.

At work, Jess is reading articles about red flags in relationships and what they mean when Jonno appears out of nowhere again and asks her over for dinner that evening. Jess discovers the whole team is going, but when Jonno asks what her date is called, she looks worried.

Later in Notting Hill, Jess is in her element, getting Felix to take photos of her in front of different coloured houses. She tells him this is the London she came for, but he tells her that he grew up somewhere similar and behind the pastel coloured doors are people with secrets and pent-up rage. Jess reminds Felix they are about to spend the evening with her new boss and the people she works with, and asks - although she isn't trying to control him - if he can lose his cap.

Jess is excited to see Jonno's house has a blue door, and when his wife, Ann, answers the doo,r she is thrilled to see them, exclaiming that she can tell they're going to be fun and that usually the only people they have over for dinner are toffs who talk about skiing.

As they all sit down for dinner, Jess starts telling Ann all about her UTIs and she responds by talking about the menopause. Meanwhile, Felix is sitting next to Boss, who is complaining about his love life. When Felix asks him why he doesn't make eye contact with him, Boss admits that he only makes eye contact with people who he knows he isn't going to sleep with, which he says is awkward because obviously Felix is with Jess.

Meanwhile, Jess is telling Ann that she is scared about Astrid's tumour coming back. As she gets teary about the thought of her dog dying, Ann takes Jess to the bathroom, where they take cocaine. Ann tells Jess about a dog she used to have called Lettuce and how loyal she was and that she supported her through everything from Ann's mother passing away to Jonno's emotional affair with Kylie Minogue.

While Ann and Jess are talking in the bathroom, Felix comes upstairs to use the bathroom and sees all the photos Ann and Jonno have on their wall. He is shocked to see a class photo from his old school - and is even more horrified to see he is in it.

Later, Felix corners Jess and realizes she has been taking drugs, which she denies when he asks her. She claims she is just drunk, but when she starts going on about how pretty Ann's soap dish in the bathroom, he knows she is lying. He says he trusts her, which she finds annoying and they almost have their first fight.

As they eat dessert, Jess is asking Ann about her soap dish when Jonno tells Felix that he recognises him. Felix shrugs off the suggestion, but even though he is really drunk, Jonno is adamant that they have met before.

Kim is freaking out that something Jonno said at dinner might have let Josie know that she fancies her, but she soon forgets her traumas when a tray of coke comes out. As everyone dives in, Jess tells Felix - who is trying to stay sober - that she can't say no to her boss, and he watches on as everyone else dances and the night gets wild.

Later, Felix is cornered by Jonno again, and he says he remembers now where he knows him from. It turns out Felix went to the same school as Jonno and Ann's daughter, Viola and they used to date.

Jonno recalls that Felix dropped out of school before his A-Levels and broke his daughter's heart. Jonno tells Felix he remembers that he took his daughter to Manchester and ended up leaving her in a Travelodge, and Felix points out that there is more to it than that.

Drunk Jonno is getting too close and is annoying Felix by getting in his face and soon the pair start fighting. As they are wrestling, Felix tells Jonno that what really happened is that his dad ran out of money, so he had to leave private school and his home after his dad packed up all his things into a cardboard box and told him to make his own way in life at the age of 16. Felix then tells Jonno that Viola said she would wait for him, but after a couple of weeks, she started dating someone else.

As they are fighting, Ann and Jess come into the room, with Ann looking for a cooling sex gel that she wants to give to Jess, but when she can't find it, Jonno remembers they left it in the garden last time they used it.

No one seems to be bothered about the fact Jonno and Felix were just wrestling, until Jess and Felix leave and she gets angry with him for not only stealing the beautiful soap dish, but also for calling her boss a tosser. She has no idea about Jonno and Felix's history and tells Felix that the evening has been nothing but a series of red flags for her and that he is not the Mr Darcy that she thought she was going to meet in London.

As the pair start having their first fight, Felix points out that Jess is always scanning him for red flags, whereas he doesn't work like that. Jess says that is because she doesn't have any red flags, but he says she absolutely does and starts listing them.

After listing everything from the fact that she sends essays as texts, the fact that her dog smells like vinegar, and the fact that she set herself on fire the very first day they met, Felix calls Jess too much. She is upset, thinking it is an insult... but he says it's a good thing... that she is just the right amount, but then a little bit more, and she melts.

They end their fight by kissing in the street, and their romance is very much back on track.

The third episode opens with Jess sitting in her office watching old YouTube videos of Felix online while she is meant to be working. Her boss, Jonno, comes up behind her and says he has some pointers that will make her more useful at work. Not wanting to do the job himself, he gets his assistant Josie to read out the list, detailing everything from not eating smelly food in the office to asking Jess to change her shoes before she comes into the office because Jonno is sensitive to bad smells.

Meanwhile, at the job centre, Felix is trying to get work, but tells the guy working there, Mike, that he is in a band and writing songs takes up all his time. Mike tells him that he is also in a band with his job centre colleagues and asks to hear some of Felix's songs.

Back at her flat that evening, Jess tells Felix that she needs to get to bed early because she has a breakfast meeting and needs to get some sleep after her boss had a word with her.

After some hilarious cultural confusion over what a 'bollocking' means, Felix tells Jess that he has noticed that she isn't always kind to herself and that he will be the one to look after her. Despite saying that she needs an early night, Jess can't resist Felix and the fact that he wants to care for her, and they end up having sex on the kitchen floor.

Later, the time ticks by and Jess's early night goes out of the window as the pair sit up late watching Paddington, which Felix says he has seen 20 times. As he is getting teary over the part where Paddington can't find his uncle after the storm at the very beginning of the movie, Jess isn't quite so moved by the whole thing and starts scrolling through Instagram, watching all of Wendy Jones' videos again. Felix tells her she needs to concentrate as Paddington only has a certain amount of marmalade to get to the UK with, and soon they are having sex again.

Later, Jess watches more Wendy videos and compares them to the times she asked Zev to make social media posts with her, but he refused. When she comes back into the bedroom, she tells Felix she really needs to go to sleep now, as it is 2 am, but before long they are having sex again - Jess's early night well and truly hampered.

Later, as they watch an Alan Carr TV show, Jess says it is really relaxing and just what she needs to nod off, but Felix is baffled by the fact that she scrolls through her phone through the whole of Paddington, but says she finds Alan Carr TV shows relaxing.

As the night creeps on, it gets to 3 am and Jess and Felix are still talking and getting to know one another. They talk about everything from past romances, what gives them the ick, and how long Felix has been sober. He tells Jess he has been sober for three years and talks about the time he hit rock bottom and slept with his sister's friend.

Jess opens up about the fact her dad died from Parkinson's when she was younger and as they talk about her childhood, the clock ticks from 4 am to 5 am.

Felix and Jess make lists of all the things they like about one another, and by the time Jess's alarm goes off at 6.45 am she is still awake and hasn't been to sleep at all.

As she eats leftover takeaway, cold (despite Felix saying he would look after her and never let her eat cold noodles), Jess faces a long day at work, while Felix finally goes to sleep.

The second episode opens with Jess sitting in a hospital bed with burns after setting her nightie on fire with a candle. She is asking the nurse for stronger painkillers, but all she gets is a questionable cheese sandwich when Felix arrives with Astrid tucked into his coat. Jess is shocked to see them, especially as dogs aren't allowed in the hospital, and Felix tells her he is there to break her out, so they grab her sandwich and hotfoot it out of the ward, with Jess still in her hospital gown.

They get in Felix's car, which Jess notices is a mess, and he drives her and Astrid home. Once there, Jess puts on another nightie, which she says she won't apologize for, while Felix makes her tea and tells her about the ongoing British debate over whether Jaffa Cakes are a cake or a biscuit. She seems to find his random facts a turn-on, because asking him why he came back for her, she kisses him again, and this time they end up sleeping together.

The next morning, Felix wakes to find Jess dressed in an Elle Woods-style pink suit, and he asks her if she works in a bank. She replies that no - she's actually a stripper - before racing out the door to catch the bus to her new job in advertising, leaving Felix in her bed.

After she eventually navigates her way around London and arrives at work, Jess meets her new boss, Jonno, Josie, his assistant, Kim, who she worked with in New York, and Boss, Kim's assistant.

While Felix is at home telling his housemate, Auggie, all about Jess and how much he likes her, Jess is at work listening to her new colleagues share their love life dramas and warn her that she has only known Felix for two days and that he might not be the man she thinks he is.

After talking to Auggie, Felix realises he has to break things off with his on/off girlfriend Linnea if he's really serious about Jess, but when he gets to her hous,e she pounces on him, ties him to the bed and his pleas that he has met some else fall on deaf ears.

Meanwhile, Jess is now wondering if Felix is the man for her after her co-workers made her doubt her feelings, and they take her for a night out with their friends at a fancy restaurant. After giving her a quick makeover, they head in to find their table and Jess meets footballer Paulo, who she awkwardly flirts with.

While in the bathroom, Jess makes another video for Wendy on her private Instagram account, but Kim overhears her talking and asks what she is doing. Jess confesses about how she makes videos for her ex-boyfriend's new fiancée, even though she will never see them, because it makes her feel better. Kim is baffled by the whole thing and says that although Jess seems intense, it is good to see she is doing something about it, but quickly exits the bathroom before Jess can open up any more.

Back at the table, Paulo asks Jess where she has been and calls her 'messy' which Jess takes offense to and tells him that no one would ever call a man messy and that a quick bathroom Google of his name has told her that he is married with two-year-old twins, which she thinks makes him the chaotic one.

As she gets more and more cross, Jess storms out of the restaurant, but it seems Paulo loves the drama as he tells his friends still sitting around the table that Jess is amazing.

Meanwhile, Felix is still at Linnea's house, and she has finally gotten the message that they are over and has fallen asleep next to him on the bed. Felix smiles as he gets a text from Jess asking him to come and meet her... which he does.

Once they meet up, Jess asks him if he is love bombing her, which he doesn't really understand as he says he's never known what it means... however, he has made her a mix tape. Jess is won over, seeing him as her very own Mr Darcy again, and they head home to her flat to listen to the tape.

The first episode opens with New Yorker Jess walking through London, thinking about how her new home has space for many kinds of women, from a secret-ridden character in a period drama to a modern-day police officer solving gritty crimes. However, she admits she is none of these women; she is actually a heartbroken woman who stalks her ex-boyfriend's new girlfriend on social media.

As she sits on her bed in a run-down flat in South London, Jess and her dog, Astrid, watch Wendy (her ex, Zev's new girlfriend) on her Instagram, but she is devastated to see a video of Zev proposing, and throws her phone across the room in anger.

Time then goes back to one month earlier, when Jess was still living in New York. She falls out of a taxi, drunk, and tries to get into an apartment with a key, but finds the locks have been changed. She picks up a garden gnome and smashes the glass in the front door, letting herself in and confronting her ex, Zev and his new girlfriend, Wendy, who are both asleep in bed.

Zev is shocked to see Jess in his house in the middle of the night, but Wendy is annoyingly calm and tells Jess she is trying to understand the hurt she is going through, but this only makes Jess more angry. They all start arguing and Jess accuses Zev of ruining her life when he left her for Wendy, and Zev eventually tells her that he is calling the police unless she leaves.

The episode then moves to Long Island, where Jess is living with her mom, Lois, her grandma, Dottie, and her older sister, Nora, who are also all single.

They're all watching Sense and Sensibility together when Jess's grandma blames the type of men they're all trying to date for the reason they're all single. As they all argue, Nora's 13-year-old son, Dash, comes in and tells them they're all tragic for not having plans on a Friday night.

At work, Jess is shooting a commercial with Jessica Alba, who is annoyed that the script for the ad has been changed. She talks to Jess about it and asks her to come and work with her to make the ad better, but Jess freaks out at the responsibility and runs off to the bathroom.

Jess's boss, Jameson, who also happens to be her ex-brother-in-law, finds her and asks what is wrong. She tells him she's fine, but he says she's lost her passion and drive, and something has changed in her.

Jess points out she's had a really rubbish year, so Jameson says their UK office has asked for a new producer to go over and shoot a huge Christmas ad, and he wants her to do it. He tells her that this could be the change she needs, especially as she went to see Spice World nine times and loves a period drama, making her the perfect candidate for the London move.

After saying goodbye to her family, Jess and Astrid head off to London (watching romcoms on the plane, of course) and soon find themselves in the back of a black cab and heading to their new home.

Jess is excited as she passes all the London landmarks like Buckingham Palace and the London Eye - but when her driver pulls up in front of a questionable tower block, it isn't quite the new home she was hoping for. Instead of being the colourful front doors from movies like Love Actually and Bridget Jones' Diary, it's more like a crime drama - especially when her new neighbour, Gaz, makes her jump by turning up behind her to introduce himself.

As Jess admits to Gaz this isn't the kind of 'estate' she had in mind when booking her accommodation, she looks around the flat and comments that it doesn't really matter that the ceiling is mouldy, because she won't be home much, and instead she'll be out at amazing parties with her new friends.

After unpacking and watching Wendy on her Instagram for the millionth time, Jess decides to kick off her London life by getting dressed up and heading to the pub. Once there, she watches a singer on stage called Felix and tries to make small talk with the locals, who aren't very friendly.

Jess bumps into Felix in the toilets and they start chatting about how to wash your hands. Felix tells Jess his name, but before she can tell him hers, he walks out.

Later, Jess is outside the pub trying to get an Uber when Felix appears again and they chat about the fact she's only been in London for about 12 hours and now can't get home. Felix offers to walk Jess to her flat so she doesn't get murdered on her first night in the UK, and it is further than she realises, so they have a good chance to flirt.

Once outside her flat, Jess invites Felix in and he meets Astrid the dog. He says her flat isn't as bad as she made out and they talk about their favorite songs before Jess tries to kiss him.

Jess doesn't get the response she was hoping for when Felix says he is seeing someone and doesn't want to make things complicated. Jess is embarrassed that she misread the signals and tells him she's really tired, and makes him leave. He asks to swap numbers, but she just wants him to go, as she's mortified and shoves him out the door.

As Jess lights a candle and makes a video for her private Instagram account dedicated to getting one up on Wendy, she accidentally sets fire to her nightdress and starts to panic as she's all alone. She does the drop and roll and is totally fine, but she is freaking out and calls 999.

Soon, an ambulance arrives and they put her in the bath and shower her down with cold water, all while Gaz arrives to see what the commotion is about. He tells the paramedics that Jess is a bit of a drama queen, while she thinks she is going to pass out in the bath.

Meanwhile, Felix is walking home and listens to the song that Jess said was her favourite. He realises that he doesn't want to leave and so turns around to walk back to her flat.

While she is having a panic attack in the bath, surrounded by paramedics, Jess is worried about where Astird is, and then - like a mirage - Felix turns up holding the dog, and Jess thinks she might have just found her Mr Darcy.

Netflix has just added a new rom-com that is set to have you hooked.

Too Much is a new ten-part series that landed today, Thursday, July 10, starring Megan Stalter and Will Sharpe as Jess and Felix — a mismatched pair who meet outside a pub one evening after Jess has just relocated her whole life from New York to London.

The series, which was created by Girls star and Catherine Called Birdy writer Lena Dunham and her husband Luis Felber, sees New York workaholic Jessica Salmon, who, while still reeling from a break-up, decides to move to London to live a life of solitude, ‘like a Bronte sister’.

But instead of finding her Mr Darcy, Jess meets Felix, a trauma-ridden, wannabe musician who sleeps with any woman who stays in the bar past closing time. But could he turn out to be her Love Actually-style leading man after all?

With Jess moving to a new city for work, Too Much has some serious Emily in Paris vibes... and although Jess doesn't have to learn an entirely new language where she has moved to like Emily does, there are some hilarious cultural differences between her and Felix that will have you howling.

The comedy and romance drama side of the show is also perfect for anyone who is a fan of Girls (also created by Lena Dunham)... with Jess and Felix's will they won't they romance keeping you hooked over all ten episodes.

Too Much also has a ridiculously star-studded cast, including model and actress Emily Ratajkowski and cameos from the likes of Rita Ora, Jennifer Saunders and Stephen Fry. Richard E. Grant also plays the role of Jess's boss to perfection.

This isn't a laugh-a-minute comedy that will have you rolling on the floor in stitches, but instead a thought-provoking drama about the reality of complicated grown-ups trying to find love again after a messy breakup. But that doesn't mean it isn't delightfully funny and will have you rooting for Jess and Felix to make things work right from the start.

My Oxford Year is a fun Netflix romance movie starring Sofia Carson (Purple Hearts) and Corey Mylchreest (Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story) that should have you laughing and crying in equal measure.

And the fact that the movie hails from Neon, which has been on a hot streak with acclaimed movies like The Life of Chuck, The Monkey and Best Picture-winner Anora, should just add to that.

Dakota Johnson is the big name in the cast, playing the character of Julie. Johnson, as mentioned, was most recently seen in Materialists, but she is also known for Daddio, The Lost Daughter and the Fifty Shades franchise.

The other well known member of the cast is Adria Arjona, who plays Ashley in the movie. Arjona is coming off her role as Bix in Andor, while also having recently starred in Blink Twice and Hit Man.

The male leads of the movie are Kyle Marvin, who plays Carey, and Michael Angelo Covino as Paul. Marvin and Covino co-starred and co-wrote the acclaimed indie The Climb together. Other than that, Marvin has been seen in the limited series WeCrashed and Covino was recently seen in Riff Raff.

Also listed in the official credits is Nicholas Braun, best known for his Emmy-nominated role in Succession.

Despite his string of hit roles in everything from Good Will Hunting and The Bourne Identity to, most recently, Oppenheimer, not everything Matt Damon stars in is as successful. However, one of his biggest bombs is finding a new life after becoming a smash hit on Netflix.

Released in 2017, Downsizing wasn't well received. It has just 47% on Rotten Tomatoes and was a box office bomb after its $55 million earnings failed to match its budget. However,in the UK, it was added to Netflix on Thursday, May 22, and it's been steadily climbing Netflix's rankings and gaining viewers. At the time of writing two weeks later, it's the streamer's most-watched movie.

Living in the US? Downsizing is free via Hoopla and Kanopy but is only available to buy or rent digitally beyond those options.

Downsizing is part romance, part comedy and part sci-fi story. It's set in a world in which humans invent 'downsizing', a process by which people are irreversibly shrunk to about five inches, which makes them more space efficient thereby solving overpopulation and the climate crisis.

Damon plays Paul, who decides to go through the process with his wife Aubrey (Kristin Wiig)... until she pulls out at the last minute and leaves him. Stuck in his small form, and seeing his life fall apart, Paul goes on a voyage through the small 'Leisureland' in order to find himself and redefine his life.

Critics of 2017 criticized Downsizing for being a bit muddled in its focus, though it's worth pointing out that certain reviewers really loved it. As someone who watched the movie in cinemas back then, it's safe to say that the movie was mis-marketed in a way that hurt it: posters and adverts made it look like a standard American comedy, but it's anything but.

In a way, Downsizing is an exploration of the climate crisis and humanity's longevity, dealing with themes of class struggles and impending extinction events. It can get dark and melancholy at times, which isn't what audiences would really expect from a Matt Damon rom-com.

That's likely why Downsizing was received so poorly eight years ago. It's not a bad film, but if you're expecting a lighthearted comedy, you're going to be disappointed.

The movie was directed by Alexander Payne, also known for The Descendants and The Holdovers, and if you've seen those fantastic movies, you'll have your expectations better aligned for Downsizing.

Downsizing climbing up Netflix's rankings makes sense: people have probably forgotten any expectations created by marketing 8 years ago, the streamer's thumbnails make it seem more of a sci-fi story than a comedy, and its genre tags are "cerebral" and "imaginative" which better fits the movie.

The movie isn't actually the only pre-Covid Hollywood flop on the top-10 movies list and if you want something more action-packed, the Taron Edgerton and Jamie Foxx Robin Hood from 2018 is at #4 after being added on Sunday, June 1.

Rounding out the list is Netflix Original A Widow's Game at #2, Channel 4 doc Accused: The Hampstead Paedophile Hoax at #3, Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning at #5, stalwart The Super Mario Bros. Movie at #6, another Netflix movie The Heart Knows at #7, The Cat in the Hat at #8, Netflix doc A Deadly American Marriage at #9 and yet another kids movie Minions at #10.

I am stoked to watch Materialists, the latest movie from Past Lives’ director Celine Song and starring Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans; it’s my top-ranked must-watch indie movie this summer.

So I was excited to check out a new trailer (below) that premiered online on May 8. But that excitement turned to confusion pretty quickly when I heard an omnipotent voice-over narration being used.

If you’re not quite sure what I mean, do you remember the “In a world…” trend that movie trailers used to have where a voice not connected to the characters in the movie would describe the setting, plot, characters and even some of the themes of the movie? The narration in the Materialists trailer even starts out with “In the world…”

Now, this does not dampen my excitement for Materialists, which sees Johnson play a young matchmaker in New York City who herself has proven unlucky in love. But I couldn’t help but cringe a bit when watching the new trailer and wonder why A24, a movie studio usually aiming to be on the cutting edge of marketing, would opt for this odd choice.

My fellow millennials and older moviegoers will recall how voice over narration in trailers was more common in the 1990s, even making a celebrity out of Don LaFontaine, whose reading of “In a world” became iconic, lending his voice to more than 5,000 movie trailers according to Wikipedia. But eventually the trend faded out and honestly, I can’t recall many trailers that have used it in the last 10-15 years (I’m not including voice overs from characters in the movie used in trailers).

Usually in storytelling, you want to lean on the idea of show, don’t tell, so this Materialists trailer relying on a voice-over to give some background on Johnson’s character, Lucy, and a brief summary on some of the themes the movie is going to focus on is weird. That’s especially true considering Song proved herself to be able to beautifully write and film a powerful love story in Past Lives. Certainly, the powers that be didn’t feel the need to include a voice over in the first Materialists trailer.

I had two thoughts on why the Materialists went in this direction. First, perhaps they were thinking that adding the voice over could make it more accessible for those who rely on audio descriptions. The voice over could be providing additional context that may be harder to pick up for those who aren’t able to see the images as clearly; and it certainly helps when the trailer features text like its release window and talent involved.

The other thought was maybe Materialists wanted to invoke that nostalgic feeling. The movie is a romantic comedy, a genre that had its heyday back in the 1990s and early 2000s, but hasn’t been as successful at the box office in recent years. Adding to the nostalgic factor is that Madonna’s “Material Girl” is played in the trailer.

Whatever the reasoning, I’m personally not a huge fan of it. Maybe others do and this could be the start of a new surge in trailer voice overs. But ultimately, I still can't wait to see Materialists when it releases exclusively in movie theaters on June 13.

I spent a day watching The Four Seasons on Netflix, and I can't say enough good things about it. Featuring an all-star lineup that includes Tina Fey, Steve Carell and Colman Domingo, the eight-episode series is a perfect weekend binge.

The Four Seasons explores the nature of love and long-term relationships with three couples: Kate (Fey) and Jack (Will Forte), Nick (Carell) and Anne (Kerri Kenney) and Danny (Domingo) and Claude (Marco Calvani).

These old friends meet up in the spring for an annual gathering that this year happens to coincide with Nick and Ann's 25th wedding anniversary. They're stunned to learn that Nick is unhappy in his marriage and he's going to leave Ann, who has a surprise vow renewal planned.

As spring turns to summer, the friend group is introduced to Nick's new and much younger girlfriend, Ginny (Erika Henningsen). Cracks in their own relationships start to come to the fore as Nick enjoys his new life while Anne struggles to figure out her next steps.

Based on Alan Alda's 1981 movie of the same name, Fey and fellow 30 Rock-ers Lang Fisher and Tracey Wigfield decided it was ripe for a remake. In the interest of full disclosure, I've never seen the original movie, but after having watched the whole series, I'm making plans to see it.

As a TV expert, I'm always excited to watch a show that grabs me from the very beginning and keeps my attention the whole way through. The Four Seasons balances comedy and drama, never taking itself too seriously while also driving home important messages about the complicated nature of love and marriage.

The cast is exceptional; not only do they function well as an ensemble, but the couples have been exquisitely cast and their chemistry is off the charts. Thankfully, there's room for future seasons and I'd love to see the story continue if only to see this cast again.

If you are a fan of Netflix rom-coms, then I have got your weekend viewing sorted. The Life List, which is based on Lori Nelson Spielman’s 2013 novel of the same name, has just landed on the streaming site and is set to stay with you long after you have watched it.

The story follows Alex (Sofia Carson), a young woman left reeling following the death of her beloved mother. But while Alex and her siblings struggle to deal with their sudden loss, Alex is given a surprise gift from beyond the grave when her mother leaves her a list of her childhood aspirations along with instructions on how to conquer them.

You know the drill by now with these movies - soon Alex goes on an “unforeseen and surprising journey” that will see her questioning all her life choices, and soon a new and shiny future is mapped out ahead of her until Alex is left with one final task: finding true love.

As Alex initially finds the challenge a tricky one, she refers to a checklist for potential suitors, with important qualities being kindness and the ability to bring the best out of others. But can Alex fulfil her mother's dying wish and find her dream man?

Carson, who has also starred in Purple Hearts and Carry-On, is joined in the cast by Connie Britton as Alex’s late mother and Kyle Allen as Alex's love interest, Brad. But while this movie is essentially a rom-com, there is also more to the story than that.

Perhaps the film should come with the warning that it will make you want to get cracking on that bucket list if you have one. Do you want to go skydiving? Learn Italian? Maybe you just want to get a dog? I'm convinced this movie might just give you just the push you need. Enjoy!

There have been many great movies about bringing your significant other home to meet your parents for the first time (Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?, Meet the Parents among the most famous). Well, A Nice Indian Boy, starring Karan Soni and Jonathan Groff, is the latest addition to that category.

Today [Thursday, March 6], and in double quick time, the UK version has arrived on Prime Video globally. Picture This moves much the same narrative to the Asian community in London. For tea shop owner, read struggling photographer, for Lia read Pia (Bridgerton's Simone Ashley) and for fortune teller read spiritual guru. The predictable formula is just all part of the fun, and from the trailer it looks like this version will live up to everybody’s expectations.

Cue lots of vibrant colour, loveably irritating over-protective parents, the clash between traditional and modern, with the younger generation putting careers before marriage and, yes, plenty of romance as well. Add a big wedding to give it more cultural flavour — just like the original — and the possibility of a multi-cultural relationship and, while those parents are going to be seriously upset, it should go down a storm with audiences.

Five Blind Dates was Prime Video's first Australian original feature, yet felt remarkably familiar. Everybody’s favourite cliches were there – sassy friends, makeover montages, unsuitable suitors being shown the door — and, even if the movie relied on them a touch too much, that familiarity just added to its considerable appeal. It even extended to the cast, with the father figure played by Tzi Ma, the go-to Chinese actor for this type of role and who always delivers when it comes to laughs. Remember him in The Farewell?

A regular Chinese face on Western screens, his career started over 45 years ago and has taken in blockbusters like Rush Hour and top TV series including Veep as well as comedy. Similarly, Picture This puts Bridgerton favourite Simone Ashley in the spotlight as Pia, alongside a supporting cast that includes Hero Fiennes Tiffin (After), Sindhu Vee (Matilda: The Musical), Asim Chaudhry (What's Love Got To Do With It?) and Phil Dunster (Ted Lasso). We're guessing it will be incredibly obvious right from the start who Pia will marry, but you’d expect nothing less. And finding the love of Pia's life will have plenty of setbacks along the way.

With her photography business nearly on the rocks and no man on the horizon, she’s still fiercely holding on to her independence as her sister Sonal (Anoushka Chadha) prepares to get married. Her mother, meanwhile, keeps urging her to partner up and there’s a glimmer of hope for both of them when a spiritual guru at Sonal’s engagement party predicts Pia will meet the love of her life in her next five dates. As her family get involved and her ex (Hero Fiennes Tiffin) re-appears, both her love and professional lives are thrown into chaos.

Five Blind Dates was enough of a hit with audiences for Prime Video to announce Picture This just a month after its release. Yes, it’s familiar – unashamedly so – and we know exactly what to expect. But that’s why audiences will always love this type of film. It only remains to be seen where the story will move to next.

Celine Song had one of the best debuts as a writer/director in recent memory with her beautiful romance drama Past Lives, which was nominated for two Oscars and earned plenty of rave reviews (it’s 95% “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes). The cast of Materialists is led by the trio of Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal. All we know about their characters at this point is that Johnson is playing a matchmaker, while Evans and Pascal play a new love interest and her ex (unclear which is which).

Johnson broke out after starring in the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise and has since starred in titles like A Bigger Splash, Suspiria, The Peanut Butter Falcon, The Lost Daughter, Persuasion, Daddio and Madame Web.

Evans is best known for playing Steve Rogers/Captain America in the MCU, but his post-Marvel career includes movies like Knives Out, The Gray Man, Ghosted, Pain Hustlers and Red One.

As mentioned, Materialists is the second feature directorial effort from Celine Song. Prior to making her debut as a film director, Song was a playwright and theater director, while also being part of the writing team for multiple episodes on The Wheel of Time. But she clearly showed a knack for filmmaking with Past Lives.

She was awarded the Outstanding Directorial Achievement in First-Time Feature Film from the Director’s Guild of America, Best Director from the Film Independent Spirit Awards, Best Directorial Debut from the National Board of Review and a number of other awards and nominations for her directing. She was also Oscar-nominated for her original screenplay of Past Lives.

In addition to reuniting with A24, Song is also reteaming with her Past Lives’ producers David Hinojosa of 2AM as well as Pamela Koffler and Christine Vachon of Killer Films. Song is also listed as a producer.

However, there's bizarrely one movie in the four-movie franchise that critics hate — Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (the one where Bridget dances in the ocean after accidentally taking some illegal substances!).

The second movie, released in 2004, has a Rotten Tomatoes critics score of just 27%! It looks like a complete anomaly when you see the RT critic scores for the other three films: Bridget Jones's Diary 79%, Bridget Jones’s Baby 78% and Mad About The Boy 86%.

Yes, the current movie has the best critics score of the whole franchise and is the only one to top 80%. If you combine its critic and audience score you get an overall score of 160, tying it with the original film as the most well-loved film in the series.

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason has a perfectly respectable 60% audience score, lower than the other films but not bad, however, the 27% critics score is just a shocker! So why the critical loathing? Well, sequels are never easy and the original movie was in many ways the ultimate rom-com. Renée Zellweger nailed Bridget, despite the fears of some British fans that the American star wouldn’t be able to capture either Bridget's accent or her unique attitude to life. However, The Edge of Reason was a letdown for many. Will Self in London’s Evening Standard panned the movie, declaring: "There is something so plangently patronizing about the tone of Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, and it wasn't there in the first film. Maybe it's because this is essentially a retread, with the only difference being that Bridget has Darcy at the beginning, then loses him, then gets him back."

The New York Times review, hidden behind a paywall, is especially scathing, while in a slightly more positive review, The Guardian said: "Entertaining stuff, mostly, but Hugh Grant is absent for ages and ages, and without him it's just not the same.”

All the Bridget Jones movies are hugely enjoyable and if you like one you’re bound to like all of them. Mad About the Boy has actually broken the UK box-office rom-com record, making £11.8 million in its first four days of release. Ironically what was the movie that held the record previously? Yep, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason.! Whatever the critics might think, fans still love Bridget.

Speaking of — not only does two-time Grammy winner Sara Bareilles star as Jenna, but the musician also composed music and wrote lyrics for the show, earning nominations for the Tony Award for Best Original Score and the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album. With Valentine's Day around the corner, you're probably trawling the best streaming services for something romantic to watch. Stop wasting your time and boot up Prime Video, because the best modern rom-com (which even non-romance viewers will like) is on there.

I'm talking about a 2022 movie made by Amazon called I Want You Back (which, in the US at least, is free to watch on Prime Video under the Freevee brand). Far too few people have even heard about this movie, despite its glowing 87% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Our romantic leads in the movie are the wonderful comedy actors Jenny Slate and Charlie Day. They play two strangers who are dumped by their respective partners, and then have a fortuitous meeting when they're both heartbroken.

This isn't your average romance where they learn to give love a second chance after hurt, though. No; in I Want You Back they hatch a scheme to break up the others' exes' new relationships, to force them back into their arms.

What ensues is just-under-two-hours of scheming and commiserating, as they try to stop their exes' happiness, but also slowly character growth as they learn to be happy in their own skin and address the issues they were dumped in the first place.

I'm not a fan of the generic rom-coms that get dumped onto streaming services by the bucketload, but I loved I Want You Back. It's that most heartfelt and earnest of romance movie in which the eventual coupling isn't an all-but-guaranteed end of a character arc, but a reward for the characters learning and growing in themselves. In short it's a character drama about two people who just so happen to find love as a reward for their personal growth.

It can be wickedly dark at times, like when Slate's Emma tries to break up Day's Peter's exes new relationship by initiating an ill-advised threesome with her and her new man, or when Peter takes drugs with Emma's ex in a night that swiftly goes downhill. That's why I say it's great for non-romance fans, as there's enough comedy for it to stand on its own. The eventual revelation of the scheming, during a romantic wedding, goes about as poorly as you'd imagine. And instead of the film copping out by throwing out a generic happy ending, there are real consequences for the characters.

But in the end it's a lot more honest about relationships than other rom-coms; people make mistakes and can do silly things when they're upset. Peter and Emma are no exceptions.

The best part of I Want You Back is how well it combines the aforementioned romantic drama with real comedy, and as some of the best comedy actors in the biz, Day and Slate are really great. They're joined by a solid cast including Gina Rodriguez, Scott Eastwood, Manny Jacinto and Clark Backo.

Rom-coms that appeal to non-rom-com fans have been enjoying a golden age recently; first there was I Want You Back in 2022 and then a year later we saw No Hard Feelings in 2023 and Anyone But You in 2023/4 (depending on where you live). Notably these latter two were studio movies, and I Want You Back is a rare example of a streaming rom-com that's any good. I'm hoping 2025 brings a belter too!

So if you're looking for a great Valentine's Day watch this year, particularly if you're in a couple with one person who wants romance and one who doesn't, I Want You Back is a great pick.

If you're looking for the perfect romantic comedy that can make you smile, keep you entertained and provide an escape from reality on a journey into the Italian countryside, then La Dolce Villa is exactly what you need. And given that it lands on Netflix the day before Valentine's Day, it's also the perfect movie to watch when you're in the mood for love.

Romantic comedies are meant to be lighthearted and fun, and La Dolce Villa checks those boxes easily. You won't enjoy the movie nearly as much if you overthink the details, rather it's best enjoyed when you just go with the flow.

Scott Foley plays Eric, a restaurant consultant whose "Dad Bat Signal" goes off upon discovering — on social media, no less — that his free-spirited daughter intends to purchase an Italian villa for one euro. He arrives in the charming town of Montezara to talk his daughter, Olivia (Maia Reficco) out of this scheme (he emphasizes that this is a scheme on several occasions). Olivia already has plans to tour available villas with Francesca (Violante Placido), the mayor of Montezara. It's not until they tour the final villa, one that's not technically part of the one-euro plan, that Olivia finds the home of her dreams.

Eric isn't sold about the whole idea but he's willing to go along with his daughter's plans after she explains that she and her mother, who passed away from cancer five years prior, used to look at these one-euro villas and dream of owning one. Being in Italy, Olivia says, makes her feel like her mother is close.

During construction, Olivia discovers an old authentic pizza oven hidden behind a wall. Eric was a very talented chef before his wife died and it's not long before his passion for food is rekindled and his enthusiasm for Olivia's project, along with his easygoing relationship with Francesca, reignites something inside him he thought was lost forever.

La Dolce Villa has a phenomenal cast, without whom this movie wouldn't be so special. It's impossible not to feel Olivia's passion for making her dream become a reality, or laughing with Eric's attempts to manage the renovation even though he's not in charge at all. Placido's Francesca is eloquent and warm despite her struggles to keep things running smoothly in Montezara. It won't take long before you're actively imagining what your dream one-euro Italian villa would be like.

Though the running joke about the perils of "adulting" wear thin very early on, they're easy to excuse when you consider that La Dolce Villa is a movie about passion, whether you're a young adult discovering the things that inspire you or you're a more established adult reclaiming passions that have been lost over the years.

Whether you're looking for a Valentine's Day movie, want a sunny escape on a rainy day or if you're searching for a movie that can remind you to embrace your own passion, La Dolce Villa is exactly what you need.

In Britain, it's Bridget Jones Day as the fourth movie, Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy, hits cinemas nationwide.

To be clear to American readers, it's not actually a UK national holiday (perhaps it should be? free big pants for all?), but there is a genuine sense of excitement about seeing Renée Zellweger's chardonnay-loving heroine back on the big screen alongside Hugh Grant as devilish Daniel Cleaver. My local cinema is screening it 19 times in one day!

So imagine how stunned I was to discover the movie isn't being released in US theaters. Instead, it's gone straight to streaming on Peacock. From a UK perspective, this is a mad decision!

The movie looks set to be a massive box office hit with advance tickets selling faster than Barbie! Sure it won't beat Barbie overall but it's almost certain now to be a success. It looks even more crazy to not give it an American theatrical release when you think it's Valentine's weekend. It's also been receiving largely positive reviews, in our Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy review we described it as a "welcome return" while in a glowing review, The Times says "our national treasure grows up".

So, why isn't Bridget Jones being released theatrically in the US?

Money. The movie has gone straight to streaming in America simply because the makers don't believe it will make enough loot. While this seems incredible from a UK perspective, a closer look at the box office figures for the third movie, Bridget Jones's Baby (2016), highlights why they took the decision. The film made just $8 million in its opening weekend despite being released widely across America. Out of its total $212 million box office gross, only $24 million of that came from the US and Canada.

Talking about the decision to not give it a US theatrical release, Bridget Jones author Helen Fielding told Variety: "You know what I'm a realist. I've been sort of parenting this brand for a long time now and I understand the changing economics of the movie industry and the different markets. So I completely respect what Universal decided to do. They know what they're doing. People watch 'Bridget' — all three movies are still streaming — so they will watch this one at home. It's a good movie to watch on the sofa, I think."

Unfortunately, it seems not as many people go to cinemas nowadays to watch rom-coms. Is this because there are fewer good rom-coms? Or does the fact that a rom-com doesn’t need to be enjoyed on a big screen mean people just wait to stream it? It seems sad that American fans, though, aren't getting the chance to experience Bridget Jones this weekend. Are you really taking your date out to watch Captain America: Brave New World? Do you actually want a second date? Perhaps stream Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy on Peacock instead. It's time America fell in love with our Bridget again.

Shrinks. They're a gift to screenwriters. Alone in a room with their client, both characters have free rein to be completely honest. A uniquely perfect plot device, it’s just one of the reasons behind the success of Apple TV Plus's Shrinking, which is already confirmed for a third season. At its core are three therapists, played by Jason Segel, Harrison Ford and Jessica Williams. And, for more of Williams' customary sparkle in her breakthrough movie, The Incredible Jessica James, just slide on over to Netflix where it's quietly tucked away.

Warmly received at Sundance in 2017, the film was soon snapped up by Netflix and is ready and waiting to be enjoyed all over again. The movie sees Williams in the title role, as a writer in New York desperately trying to get over her overly laid-back boyfriend, Damon (LaKeith Stanfield) but having little success. While he’s constantly on her mind, she’s also obsessing about her ambitions and things become even more complicated when she meets the affable Boone (Chris O’Dowd). The two have a lot in common, but show all the signs of being stuck in the friend zone. She, after all, has a lot on her mind. Perhaps she needs a shrink.

There’s a pleasantly safe feel to the storyline, but it’s lifted to another level entirely by Williams: she bursts off the screen with enormous energy, coupled with a generous helping of humor and more than a touch of street smarts. It was a captivating, star-making performance and she’s been climbing the ladder ever since, with roles in Olivia Wilde’s hit teenage comedy Booksmart (2019), which is also on Netflix, the Fantastic Beasts franchise and, more recently, Road House, alongside Jake Gyllenhaal. It’s only a matter of time until she swaps those nominations for actual hardware. We can't wait to see it happen — or for that matter season three of Shrinking.

In just two series, Shrinking has introduced us to a collection of off-beat characters, all with their individual issues or eccentricities and mixed with just the right amount of heartbreak. Segel’s Jimmy is still recovering from the sudden death of his wife, so any attempts at new relationships are muddled and messy. His decision to speak his mind to his patients doesn’t help and constantly frustrates the senior therapist, the grumpy but perceptive Paul, who is also trying to cope with the onset of Parkinson’s. It’s a gem of a role for Harrison Ford and he gives a performance to match. Who knew he could do comedy so brilliantly? As played by Williams, Gaby brings plenty of energy and a more modern attitude to therapy, while doing her best to work out where her personal life is heading. A recent fling with Jimmy doesn’t simplify things.

And they’re surrounded by a clutch of equally engaging friends, from over-protective neighbor Liz (Christa Miller) to gay couple Brian (Michael Urie, who scooped the show’s first Critics Choice Award last week for his performance) and Charlie (Devin Kawaoka), who are desperate to be fathers. The show upped its game in season two with the arrival of one of its creators and Ted Lasso alumnus Brett Goldstein as Louis, who was responsible for irrevocably changing Jimmy’s life. His pivotal role in the season finale left us wanting more and that scene with Jimmy, plus a few hints from Lawrence himself, points towards that wish coming true.

While fans of the show can’t wait for season three, they may also have question marks in their mind. Lawrence confirmed last year that he and co-creators Segel and Goldstein already knew how the show would end and that they’d always planned for a three season run, but added he was open to a fourth outing if there was still a story to tell. But the show’s renewal announcement made no mention of it ending with season three, which could be a positive sign. Fingers crossed all round.

By all accounts, season three filming is about to start, which points towards a late autumn release. In the meantime, the show has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 94% and multiple SAG, Critics Choice, Golden Globe and Primetime Emmy nominations, plus Michael Urie’s recent win. It’s a sizeable achievement for a comedy after just two seasons. Two nods — Critics Choice last year and Primetime Emmy in 2023 — were for Jessica Williams herself, a sign she’s fulfilling the promise of her early 20s, when she was the youngest correspondent ever on The Early Show. Just a handful of years later, she appeared in The Incredible Jessica James.

It's a truth universally acknowledged that in the late 1990s and early 2000s, her name was synonymous with 30-something single women who were looking for love, up against the attitudes of their families and friends and swigged Chardonnay to stave off loneliness. Big pants came into it as well. Now Bridget Jones is back, older for sure, but wiser? And, more to the point, is she still the ultimate standard bearer for singletons?

In the fourth film to bear her name, and still based on the novels of Helen Fielding, Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy finds her in her fifties with two children and adjusting to life after the sudden loss of her husband Mark Darcy. It takes time, but everybody around her — friends, family, gynecologist et al — is pushing her to move forward. Cue a friend who signs her up for a dating app, and an attractive park ranger in his late 20s who is quickly smitten. With her glow back and confidence sky high, the seemingly perfect mums at the kids' school are far less daunting and life is fun. Until he does a runner. Left high and dry, she's better at getting back on her feet and finds, once again, that what she’s been looking for is right under her nose.

Like its predecessors, the film has been making headlines, but for different reasons.

This time it's the age-difference romance between 50-something Bridget (Renee Zellweger, of course) and sub-30 Rockster (Prime Target’s Leo Woodall). It’s been a favorite theme for filmmakers of late, from the dewy-eyed The Idea Of You to the manipulative Babygirl, in what's felt like an attempt to change attitudes. That's not what this film has in mind. The approach is conventional and predictable: he's incredibly attractive, they have a wonderful time together until he gets cold feet about her age and ghosts her. And, when he comes back, she's moved on because she knows it’ll never work. Lesson? It’s fun while it lasts, but younger men never stick around. It's borderline preachy and gives the film a very dated feel.

It's not the only aspect past its sell-by date. Bridget's friends and colleagues refer to Rockster as her "toyboy", a term that belongs in her first outing, not 2025. The dating app she’s signed up for is Tinder but, let’s face it, swiping left and right is kinda yesterday. She still lives in the cozy, affluent middle-class London of the 1990s, even though this is set in the now. Money is never short, her house is beautiful — Hampstead Heath is literally at the end of the road — and the children's idyllic school is full of little Tarquins and Jocastas, with judgemental, entitled parents to match.

Thankfully, Bridget does upset the status quo with her customary energy, wearing a PJ top when she takes the children to school and allowing them to make a mess in the house. She's the kind of mum that kids would adore.

But, as well as looking to the future, the film needs to keep its feet firmly in the past, with returning characters and references to memorable scenes from previous installments. Fans of the series know where they are with both the films and books and don't want anything to change, so every important box is ticked. Bridget, for instance, still has that strange habit of running out into the snow in a flimsy dress and never getting cold. And the big pants put in an appearance, visually and verbally (no prizes for guessing who mentions them!).

Zellweger has made Bridget her own and all the scatty, often naïve, appeal is intact, coupled with a more recently-acquired maturity, but she’s in danger right from the start of being completely upstaged. Basking in the glow of his current renaissance, Hugh Grant bookends the action and gets proceedings off to a great start as a thoroughly unsuitable babysitter, teaching her children things they shouldn’t really know at their tender age. And, even though his appearance towards the end comes dangerously close to schmaltz, his smile and naughty twinkle come to the rescue.

The scene-stealing doesn't stop there. Emma Thompson returns for a couple of scenes as Bridget's go-to for any medical issues and, more importantly, life advice. It goes without saying that she delivers, especially when it comes to laughs. Among the newbies is Leila Farzad, as the queen of the perfect "n" pushy mums who looks down her surgically enhanced nose at Bridget’s lack of makeup when taking the children to school. And, if she’d been given enough screen time, Joanna Scanlan’s make-up artist, Cathy, would have walked away with her scenes. She hardly gets a look-in and it’s such a waste.

For all the laughs and the familiarity, Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy sags in the middle, spending too long on Bridget and Rockster’s romance and then frantically rushing towards a wholly predictable conclusion. Whether this is a fond farewell to Miss Jones remains to be seen, but there’s a definite air of finality about the film, as well as the sense that she’s at last, found the happy ending that she and audiences have always wished for. After everything she goes through this time, you can’t deny she deserves it.

The new Prime Video series Newtopia checks all of those genre-breaking boxes, with a starry cast led by K-pop royalty.

At the center of the highly anticipated fantasy-romance is Lee Jae-yoon (Park Jeong-min, of Deliver Us From Evil and Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet fame), a South Korean soldier who is self-conscious about starting his mandatory military conscription at a later age, and his girlfriend Kang Young-joo — played by singer-actress Jisoo, best known as a member of the world-famous girl group BLACKPINK — who he recently split with following an argument. However, when a mysterious outbreak starts sweeping through Seoul, the pair race across the zombie-laden metropolis to be together again.

Newtopia is directed by Yoon Sung-hyun who is known for his films Bleak Night and Time to Hunt, both of which also star Park Jeong-min. The series is co-written by Han Jin-won and Jee Ho-jin — the former, of course, co-wrote the Oscar-winning film Parasite, while Jee Ho-jin penned the recent action drama A Shop for Killers.

If you're not usually a fan of zombie-filled fare like 28 Days Later and Dawn of the Dead, consider the Prime Video series a newfangled take on the undead form. “Newtopia is like a fairytale disguised as a zombie series," said Park in a recent interview with Forbes. "The challenges the characters encounter lead to growth, and I believe viewers will find themselves rooting for the two main characters as they watch the series. Although Newtopia is labeled a zombie series, it is actually adorable, heartfelt, and light-hearted. This is what I believe sets it apart from other zombie series or films. I think Newtopia might offer a similar sense of freshness that viewers felt with the film Warm Bodies, but in its own unique way.”

The first two episodes of Newtopia hit Prime Video on Friday, February 7, with the rest of the installments from the eight-episode first season to arrive weekly on the streaming service. The movie is packed full of mayhem and mishaps when two weddings are booked into the same idyllic island resort off the coast of Georgia for the same weekend - and soon a war between the rival wedding parties erupts.

At the center of the chaos is high-powered exec Margot (Reese Witherspoon), who has planned the wedding of dreams for her little sister, while Jim (Will Ferrell) is the doting father of the bride and will go to any lengths to make sure his beloved daughter, Jenni, has the big day she has always wanted.

Of course, both families want their wedding to go ahead on the weekend they booked, and with the resort’s useless wedding planner unable to keep the peace, soon the feud escalates into an epic showdown of cake catastrophes, sneaky sabotage and even a surprise tussle with a deadly alligator.

The movie is the latest offering from Reese Witherspoon’s own production company Hello Sunshine, which has previously brought us huge TV hits like Big Little Lies, which is available to purchase on Prime Video and Daisy Jones & The Six, which is included in your Prime Video subscription.

Not only are Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon playing the main characters in the movie, but they're both producers the film, too. Reese is known for her role in the Legally Blonde movies, for which we also have a prequel called Elle, to look forward to. Most recently Reese has had roles in The Morning Show and Netflix movie Your Place or Mine.

Will Ferrell is no stranger to a comedy movie, having starred in everything from Anchorman to Elf. His next project will see him go on a road trip with his oldest friend for a Netflix documentary movie called Will & Harper.

2025 new movie The Wedding Banquet premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, alongside the likes of Opus, The Ballad of Wallis Island and If I Had Legs I’d Kick You. But now general audiences can watch the movie. So who’s in it and what is it about?

Gladstone was most recently seen in the TV miniseries Under the Bridge, but her most notable role is her Oscar-nominated performance in Killers of the Flower Moon. Kelly Marie Tran has starred in Netflix’s Sweeth Tooth and the Star Wars sequels. For Han Gi-Chan, this is his first Hollywood movie, though he has starred in a number of South Korean TV shows.

Rounding out the supporting cast is Joan Chen, who earned raves for her performance in 2024’s Didi, and Youn Yuh-jung, who won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in Minari.

This is Ahn’s second new interpretation of a classic romance story, as his previous movie, Fire Island, was a story loosely based on Pride & Prejudice. Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal were the stars of one of most beloved romantic comedies of all time (and one of WTW's 100 best movies of all time), When Harry Met Sally... . So it’s little surprise that when Ryan posted a photo of her and Crystal on her Instagram account in clothes and a setting that is instantly recognizable to the 1989 movie and promising “something iconic,” the internet quickly went abuzz about this When Harry Met Sally reunion. Is it a sequel? A TV special? What could it be?

After a week of speculation, we finally have an answer: it's a Super Bowl ad. (FYI, there are some SPOILERS ahead for the commercial if you'd rather wait until the big game to watch it live.)

As The Hollywood Reporter details, Crystal and Ryan reunited for a Hellmann's Mayonnaise commercial that will air during Super Bowl LIX on Sunday, February 9, on Fox. It takes place in Katz Delicatessen in New York City, the same location of When Harry Met Sally's iconic "I'll have what she's having scene."

Back to the original post that started all of this buzz. It features Crystal and Ryan sitting on what looks to be the exact same set from the When Harry Met Sally ending, where they detailed their happy ever after about getting married. Crystal, meanwhile, is wearing a sweater that is very close (but not identical) to the one that he wore in the movie. The full caption from Ryan reads, “It’s finally happening, we’re reuniting for something iconic. Can’t wait to show you all soon.”

For anyone that was holding out hope that this would be a sequel to the beloved movie, that was always a long shot. With all of the prep work that would have been required for a movie, there is next to no chance they would have been able to keep it under wraps like they were for this commercial.

It’s become common practice for major stars to be featured in Super Bowl commercials, and we’ve seen past Super Bowl ads bring actors back together to play their iconic roles (remember the Seinfeld ad from a few years back). That would also satisfy the “coming soon” aspect of Ryan’s tease, as Super Bowl LIX is taking place in just over two weeks on February 9 as the conclusion of the NFL playoffs.

Fast forward to the following year, where Layla suddenly finds herself single right before Christmas. Suddenly, she finds herself trying to find tickets to the sold-out concert. That’s where she meets Teddy (Devale Ellis), a kindhearted man who works for a luxury concierge company known for making the impossible possible. The only problem is that Pentatonix tickets are impossible even for him, and thus begins Layla’s merry adventure to find a way into the concert to see if love is in the cards with James.

Christmas movies are supposed to be lighthearted and fluffy and relatively low drama by design. Everyone wants a happy ending at the most magical time of year, right? Meet Me Next Year is fun, pure and simple Milian’s Layla is someone you can root for as she pulls out all the stops to get into the concert. There’s no shortage of holiday merriment, including requisites like baking, shopping and a holiday-themed lip sync battle full of "sassy sparkle." And lots and lots of Pentatonix.

The clock keeps ticking closer and closer to Christmas Eve and Layla’s desperation continues to grow. “I might be in the middle of the cutest meet cute of all time,” she admits, but if she doesn’t get the tickets then her fairytale ending may never come to fruition. Teddy is desperate to pull off the holiday win in order to keep his job, driving him to go above and beyond to make his client happy.

You have to watch Meet Me Next Christmas with an open mind. Realism isn’t important here. This is a fun, frilly story that’s meant for pure entertainment, and that’s what it delivers. Like most holiday rom-coms, it’s silly and sentimental and that’s exactly what it should be. It’s the perfect movie to help you leave the real world behind and escape into a winter wonderland.

The plot follows reluctant bride-to-be Gemma whose fiancé Nathan (Colin Hanks) suddenly drops down dead at their London home. Rather than simply mourning his loss, she takes the extraordinary decision to still marry him anyway. Obviously, she's faced with lots of people objecting, including her mum, and a battle with the law which sees her head to the courts. It boasts a great cast including Billie Lourd, Harriet Walter, Arthur Darvill, Peter Egan, Sinéad Cusack and Susan Wokoma.

Talking about making the movie on Lorraine recently, Aisling said she had a great time working with Colin Hanks, son of Tom Hanks. "He's the loveliest best person in the world."

She added: "My character goes on this journey to try and get married to a dead person, which is one way of avoiding divorce! And then his sister arrives for the wedding not realizing he's passed away and she's played by Billie Lourd who was incredible."

The movie seems to pitching itself at fans of Richard Curtis’s films with a tagline of "It's one wedding and a funeral," a clear nod to his hit Four Weddings and a Funeral (which made our Top 100 movies of all time list). Like Four Weddings, this is also a low-key movie and its summer cinema release might have easily passed you by. Unlike Four Weddings, it's so far not become a huge hit, but it will be hoping to win a much bigger audience now it has hit Netflix in the UK (US fans can rent it via various streaming sites including Prime Video).

And Mrs has enjoyed generally positive reviews, currently sitting at a 70 percent critic score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Now to the central question: can you marry a dead person? Well, in the movie, it's claimed you can because there's a law allowing people to marry dead partners set up so that women could marry soldiers who die on the battlefield.

We're not experts on this but we can't see any evidence this law applies in the UK, however, apparently, you can marry a dead person in France and a few other countries!

At just under two hours, And Mrs is a snappy movie and one that promises plenty of laughs. The Netflix Top 10 chart is currently dominated by horror movies as it's Halloween so And Mrs offers something a bit different.

Luck seems to be on her side when she gets a coveted slot, singing during Fiore’s annual Christmas Eve concert, which is attended by a who’s who of the theatre world. But her big opportunity turns out to be a duet with Alex, who has been less than welcoming, and believes she was only given the job because the owner of Fiore’s is a family friend. They're stuck with each other, though, since people have been plucked out of that show and put right on Broadway. We Live in Time, the big screen love story starring Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield, is one of the most anticipated new movies of the fall, releasing exclusively in select US movie theaters on October 11 before releasing nationwide on October 18. However, an early screening of We Live in Time is taking place this Saturday, October 5, with a few added bonuses, including the chance to have a dream date on A24.

The We Live in Time early screening is taking place at 7 pm local time at select movie theaters across the country (check out Fandango to see where these screenings are happening in your area). In addition to seeing the movie, fans will be treated to a live-streamed Q&A with Pugh and Garfield. But that's not all, if you're seeing the movie with a date, you can take a picture or video of yourselves for a chance to win $1,000 for another date.

The contest was announced on social media channels, with Garfield and Pugh particularly encouraging young romantics who may have been nervous to ask their crush out on a date to the We Live in Time screening:

This is just the latest bit of social media buzz the movie has drummed up in its promotion. It previously became a bit of a sensation when a photo from the movie featured a particularly notable carousel horse; something that was brought up when Garfield visited The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on October 2.

Netflix’s latest rom-com, Nobody Wants This, is taking a stronghold on the streaming charts. If, like many others, you’ve finished all ten episodes of the moreish “Will they? Won’t they?” show, then you may be keen to find something to watch next that mirrors the way Joanne (Kristen Bell) and Noah (Adam Brody) made you feel.

What to watch after Nobody Wants This

Love

When opposites attract is no more relevant than in Netflix’s rom-com drama, Love. Unassuming and friendly Gus (Paul Rust) meets loose cannon Mickey (Gillian Jacobs), yet they form a whirlwind and undeniable connection. 

While they desperately try to find a balance that works between their personalities (and commitment issues), there’s ups, downs, and plenty of touching moments. You’ll swap sides more than you can count, but overwhelmingly, you’ll just hope they can make it.

Catastrophe is laced with fantastic comedy, with both Sharon Horgan and Rob Delaney writing and starring in the lead roles. It’s so incredibly real-life, you'll feel comfortable following along with their tale as they try to keep the love alive, while dealing with life's hardships.

Colin From Accounts

Much like Nobody Wants This, the couple in this Australia rom-com are from completely different backgrounds, yet find that instant connection in the strangest place. Unlike Nobody Wants This it’s not a mistaken rabbi at a party, but an injured dog that they choose to care for that brings Ashley and Gordon together. Played by real-life husband and wife, the pair wrote it and starred in the titular roles. 

For Ashley and Gordon, it’s the constant struggle between a large age gap and parallel work lives. Gordon is committed to his brewery and Ashley is sort-of committed to becoming a doctor. After a popular first season, the pair returned again in September 2024 for Colin from Accounts season 2. 

Colin from Accounts season 1 is available to stream on Prime Video and Apple TV Plus in the US and both seasons are on BBC iPlayer in the UK.

Fleabag

Fleabag follows a woman in London who is facing hard times in her personal, work, and just entire life. Her best friend has died, her love life is abysmal, and her family dynamics leave much to be desired. Yet, it’s full to the brim with humor. While the show tackles a number of personal relationships, there’s one that Fleabag has become very well-known for, the ‘Hot Priest’. 

While Nobody Wants This is about a rabbi, Fleabag navigates a relationship, in season 2, that centers around a man of God. And it’s the complexity of the priest’s vows to the church that makes navigating any kind of relationship equal parts heartbreaking, but also equally humorous. It’s a great watch with moments you won’t forget, much like Nobody Wants This.

Love Life

Max's anthology series follows Darby (Anna Kendrick) from her first romance to her last, while exploring everything in-between that formulates who she eventually ends up with. In season 2, it's Marcus' (William Jackson Harper) turn. While it differs to Nobody Wants This in that there's episodic tales of each relationship, rather than just following one, it's still a great feel-good rom-com that tackles the complexities of falling in love. 

Each new episode shines light on how individuals are impacted and how they grow from each relationship they become entangled with during their lifetimes. While Love Life received praise for its unique structure and themes, it was cancelled after two seasons.

These two seasons have been removed from Max, but are available to buy on Apple Plus in the US and stream on BBC iPlayer in the UK.

Starstruck

Another tale of two individuals meeting who lead completely different lives through career, passions, and family lives is explored again in Starstruck, but this time to more of an extreme. Starstruck follows Jessie (Rose Matafeo), a young woman struggling to make ends meet alongside holding down two jobs who, somehow, finds herself sleeping with film star, Tom Kapoor (Nikesh Patel).

Much like multiple entries on our list, this comedy is created and starring the successful comedian themselves. In this very watchable show, the relationship between the pair is explored through the highs and lows of living in very different worlds. Yet, somehow, you will it to work no matter what.

All three seasons are available to stream on Max in the US and BBC iPlayer in the UK.  

You’re the Worst

In this FX rom-com, Jimmy (Chris Geere) and Gretchen (Aya Cash) meet at a wedding and fall in love. It sounds romantic until you learn that both of them have self-centred personalities, making falling in love and caring about anybody else extremely difficult. 

As they try to learn to love each other, it turns out that’s quite a difficult feat when both parties don't really know how. If you want to witness what happens when two self-destructive people try to create a relationship, then You’re the Worst will do just that.

All five seasons are available to stream on Hulu in the US and the first two seasons are available to buy on Prime Video in the UK.

Trying

Finally, Trying offers viewers the chance to always laugh, even while tackling sensitive themes. Jason (Rafe Spall) and Nikki (Esther Smith) are a couple in love, but what they really want is to have a baby. So, they decide to adopt. The show follows their struggle to become parents and how they navigate it as a couple with, like Nobody Wants This, a lot of intimate and honest conversations. 

If you're looking for that beautiful mix that rom-coms offer between the heartfelt and the humorous, Trying will take you on a journey where you can watch two people fall in love with each other and then fall in love all over again as they grow their family.

Lacey Chabert is a very familiar face around Hallmark. Outside of Hallmark, Chabert is known for her roles in Mean Girls, Party of Five, Anastasia and Lost in Space. "Don't make me regret this," Lily Bloom, the improbably named Boston florist played by Blake Lively, warns Ryle Kincaid (the improbably named neurosurgeon played by Justin Baldoni, who also directs) in an early scene of It End with Us, the first big-screen adaptation of one of Colleen Hoover’s fan-favorite #BookTok novels. 

At this point in the romantic melodrama, the only real danger is to Lily's heart: that this charming, sharp-jawed bachelor will sweep her off her feet and ultimately play her for the fool. It soon becomes clear, however, that beneath their rooftop flirtations and odd maraschino-cherry banter, there beats something far more menacing. But it's this very tonal clash that makes this a regretful rendition of Hoover's 2016 best-selling book. 

The passionate present of Lily's budding courtship from Ryle — dotted with dinners with Lily's widowed mother Jenny (Amy Morton), who is utterly besotted with the dashing doc, and double dates with Ryle’s sister–turned–Lily's flower-shop employee Allysa (Jenny Slate) and her husband Marshall (Hasan Minhaj) — is intercut with memories from her past, namely the tender romance with her high-school sweetheart, Atlas Corrigan. 

Portrayed by Isabela Ferrer (who single-handedly sells those flashback sequences with her uncanny mimicry of Lively's voice and mannerisms) and Alex Neustaedter, the young Lily and sensitive Atlas bond over their shared, scarred history of domestic abuse, a dark generational trauma that is brought into the light when Lily and Ryle run into her now-grown former paramour (played by 1923's Brandon Sklenar) at the buzzy Beantown restaurant he owns. 

It's the reappearance of Atlas that not only sets off Ryle's jealous, controlling nature and, later, his propensity for physical violence, but also sorely points out the sorry lack of chemistry between the movie's two leads. With meager screen time, Sklenar manages to kindle a more believable spark with Lively than Baldoni does in two-plus hours. Goofy dialogue — much of it lifted verbatim from Hoover’s page by screenwriter Christy Hall — doesn't help sell things between the pained main pair. ("Love isn't for me. Lust is nice, though," Ryle coos in an early red-flag moment.) 

A characteristically radiant Lively tries her damndest though, beaming through those cringe-worthy quotes and working hard to make Lily's truly bizarro wardrobe choices seem like something a real-live woman would wear in Back Bay or anywhere, really. Though she's less believable as a flowy, folksy Manic Pixie Dream Girl type who breaks onto building rooftops to sit just a little too close to the edge, Lively roots the character with vulnerability and awareness, particularly in Lily's third-act resolve to break the cycle of abuse she was raised in and sow a healthier future for herself and her kin. 

The problem is that, despite the soil artfully dusted on her gardening apron, we don't get to plumb the nitty-gritty of our heroine, though Bardoni and Co. have wisely moved the story's sympathetic focus from Ryle to Lily, a common criticism of Hoover's novel. Movie Lily feels far less defined by her childhood trauma than the one on page; the characters have also been aged up from Hoover's novel, which adds to the nagging feeling that we're missing vital Wiki sections of who this woman is. (It's especially curious that a gal as magnetic as Lily Bloom seemingly has no girlfriend support system of her own, given how immediately she welcomes Allysa into her orbit as her BFF.) 

In fact, none of the main characters are really allowed to bloom (pardon the pun), hindered by the surface-level soapiness of both Hoover's original tale and Hall's adaptation, as well as the overly slick, music-montaged direction of Baldoni, who dizzyingly sharp-turns the film from Fifty Shades-esque seduction scenes to Lifetime-worthy love triangles to weepy, wounded melodrama. (The director is better onscreen as the charismatic and calculating Kincaid, a tick-tick of threat under all of that love-bombing.)  

It Ends with Us has worthy things to say: about the heaviness of abuse, how it informs not only individuals but generations and the determination it takes to break free from those toxic patterns. But what should be a portrait of strength and empowerment feels flimsy in this frame. 

It Ends with Us releases exclusively in movie theaters in North America on August 9.

And the nostalgia-inducing season 3 debut is ranking all of the best romantic comedies of the Eighties, with popular personalities like E.T. star Dee Wallace, basketball icon John Salley, The Facts of Life actress Mindy Cohn and more joining in to give their opinions on the decade's funniest and most swoon-worthy movie titles and why they've each earned a special place in pop culture history. 

The "Rom-Coms" edition of The Very Very Best of the 80s premieres tonight, July 12, at 8pm Eastern Time on Axs TV. The channel is included with most cable packages, but if you're a cord-cutter, you can tune in to the episode via a live TV streaming service like DirectTV Stream, Philo TV and Sling TV. Future installments of The Very Very Best of the 80s season 3 will focus on action TV shows, family-friendly movies and iconic '80s moms.

There have been countless articles about how the romantic comedy is a dying genre at the movies, with rom-coms relegated to streaming only. If that is something you want to see remedied, then the best way to do so is to support new entries that do make the leap to the big screen. The good news is that the latest chance to do so, Fly Me to the Moon, will reward you with a charming, hilarious and star-studded trip to the theater. 

Starring Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum, Fly Me to the Moon is set during the Space Race of the 1960s and the build up to the launch of Apollo 11. NASA has a public image problem as Americans are questioning whether the investment to go to the moon is worth it, so the government brings in PR maven Kelly Jones (Johansson), whose job is to get people excited about the Apollo missions again. However, her strategies run against the seriousness and challenges of the mission that launch director Cole Davis (Tatum) knows all too well. Of course, as the two butt heads over this, an undeniable connection begins to form.

Things become even more complicated though when Kelly is given a new assignment. With interest in the moon landing now at an all time high, the White House, embodied by a mysterious man named Moe Berkus (Woody Harrelson), has deemed the mission too big to fail. As a result, Kelly is told to stage a fake moon landing to have as a backup in case the real mission doesn't go as planned.

Johansson dominates the movie from the moment she appears on screen with her performance, imbuing Kelly with an easy confidence and swagger that instantly gets audiences to fall for her. The other half of our romantic couple, Tatum is serviceable but his performance is a little flat and awkward. Yes, he is playing a bit of a gruff more comfortable with logistics than people, but he doesn't quite reach the level that Johansson is at in making the relationship work (though overall it still does).

There are a number of standout supporting performances as well. Harrelson is fun as the man behind the curtain, Jim Rash is fantastically ludicrous as a demanding director, while Anna Garcia, Noah Robbins and Donald Elise Watkins are great as sidekicks to Johansson and Tatum. Ray Romano also has a few moments, but he's definitely under utilized. Then there is a fun cameo that will definitely tickle viewers when it happens.

While it's the actors delivering the lines, credit must also be given to the script written by Rose Gilroy (from a story by Keenan Flynn and Bill Kirstein). Snappy dialogue keeps things lively, but there's also enough backstory to each of these characters that gives a nice depth to the story. With this being her first official screenplay credit, it is a stellar debut for Gilroy.

That depth is reserved for the characters, however, as the movie does feel slight in its depiction of the historical Space Race. As a rom-com, it makes sense that the movie doesn't get into the tension and geopolitical concerns in beating Russia to the moon (instead it opts for more of a comedic tilt to that idea), but it is a shame director Greg Berlanti fails to capture the true majesty of the Apollo missions. The feats of sending people to the moon never feel fully appreciated by the characters. That extra layer isn't critical to the movie's success, but it does keep it more earthbound.

It also impacts the movie's runtime. At two hours and 12 minutes, this is a long romantic comedy with two distinct halves — Kelly building up NASA's image ahead of the Apollo 11 launch and then working on a staged moon landing. With its jokes and strong star performances, you won't be bored during it, but a larger, more impactful message would have helped justify the runtime a bit more.

But if you've been missing the old-school romantic comedies — ones highlighted by star performances, sharp dialogue and clever conceits — then Fly Me to the Moon will certainly scratch that itch.

The newest rom-com to come from Netflix has a star-studded cast in front of the camera, and if you've seen A Family Affair, you might be wondering where you know the actors from.

A Family Affair is a movie about movie stars, specifically the conceited action star Chris Cole who puts undue stress on his tired assistant. However this woman's plans to quit her job go awry when she discovers that her former boss and her mother are secretly dating.

Joey King as Zara

Zara is the stressed personal assistant to a conceited movie star, and eventually she's pushed to quitting her job... a decision which becomes complicated when she realizes the man is dating her mother.

Joey King is a relatively young actress but she already has over 70 credits to her name on IMDb. Her biggest roles are for recent Hulu miniseries We Were the Lucky Ones and Brad Pitt action movie Bullet Train, as well as the likes of The Sound and the Fury, Independence Day: Resurgence and Going in Style.

Nicole Kidman as Brooke

Brooke is the mother of Zara, though the father is no longer in the picture, She's a writer who strikes up an affair with a famous movie star... who happens to be her daughter's ex-boss.

Nicole Kidman is a leading Hollywood actress with loads of awards and starring roles to her name, including The Hours which garnered her an award.

Her biggest movies include Moulin Rouge!, Cold Mountain and Eyes Wide Shut, and more recently she's been in the likes of The Northman, Being the Ricardos and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

Zac Efron

Chris Cole is a big movie star, famous from a series of movies called Icarus Rush, and he lets everyone know it. He's a nightmare boss for his assistants, with an inflated sense of self worth... until he meets Brooke.

You probably know who Zac Efron is. This movie star came to prominence nearly 20 years ago with the High School Music movies and he's remained prominent ever since in comedy movies. He's been in the likes of Dirty Grandpa, Neighbors and The Disaster Artist.

More recently Efron has been in more dramatic roles like Firestarter, The Iron Claw, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile and Gold.

Liza Koshy as Eugenie

Eugenie is Zara's friend and confidant, who helps keep her sane in her insane job.

Liza Koshy may be best known to viewers of a certain generation through her YouTube videos, but she's also been in movies and TV shows too. These include Transformers: Rise of the Beasts and two more Netflix moves, Players and Work It.

Kathy Bates as Leila

Leila is Brooke's mother-in-law, who has a dry sense of humor but helps her and Zara out with advice and honest talks when they need them.

Kathy Bates is a legendary actress with an Oscar under her belt (for Misery) and three more nominations (for Primary Colors, About Schmidt and a supporting nom for Richard Jewell). 

She's also been in hits like Titanic, Revolutionary Road and The Waterboy, is a long-running actor on American Horror Story and has also had roles in things like The Office, Six Feet Under and Harry's Law.

If you're looking for an easy-breezy rom-com to watch tonight you'd better be quick because Sandra Bullock's The Proposal is only on Netflix for a few more days. 

The 2009 comedy romance starring Sandra as a high-flying (and somewhat terrifying) book editor, Margaret, and Ryan Reynolds as her long-suffering assistant Drew, is most definitely up there with the cheesiest of all romcoms - but if you are looking for an easy watch and a happy ending then this is the film for you. 

If you haven't already seen it, the movie sees pushy boss Margaret (Bullock) force her overworked assistant (Reynolds) to marry her in order to keep her visa status in the U.S. and avoid deportation to her native Canada. 

Soon the pair realize that if they are going to fool everyone into believing they are really in love (including immigration officials who are threatening to send Drew to prison for 5 years if they prove the romance is a sham) then they need to learn everything there is to know about one another. 

But while Drew knows everything about Margaret having been at her beck and call for the last three years, self-centered Margaret knows nothing about the man who brings her a coffee every morning. 

Soon the pair head off to Alaska for the weekend to meet Drew's family, who they also need to convince they are a match made in heaven - and of course, nothing quite goes to plan. 

Not only is New York-based Margaret like a fish out of water away from the city, but she also sees a side to her assistant that she didn't know existed. It doesn't take a genius to work out the ending, but that doesn't make it any the less watchable. 

The movie, which will be removed from Netflix on July 7, might not have the best Rotten Tomatoes rating (45% at the time of writing) but don't let that put you off... the dialogue is witty and the chemistry between Bullock and Reynolds is more than enough to make up for the fact the film follows the predictable rom-com formula. 

So, if you're a fan of a cheesy romance make sure you add this movie to your watch list quickly before it vanishes from Netflix for good! 

One of the best rom-coms of all time, Notting Hill officially turns 25 this year—it hit theaters on May 28, 1999, and raked in a whopping $363.8 million at the box office. And you can celebrate the sweet cinematic occasion by tuning into the Richard Curtis-penned, Roger Michell-directed romantic comedy today on TV.

Starring two of the genre's biggest names—Julia Roberts (Pretty Woman, Ticket to Paradise), who plays Hollywood film star Anna Scott, and Hugh Grant (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Bridget Jones's Diary), as British bookseller William Thacker—Notting Hill has been an enduring favorite thanks to the chemistry between its two megawatt leads, its cheeky humor courtesy sidekicks like Will's roommate Spike (Rhys Ifans) and its fairytale version of the titular London neighborhood. 

"A chance encounter over spilled orange juice leads to a kiss that blossoms into a full-blown affair," reads the film's official synopsis. "As the average bloke and glamorous movie star draw closer and closer together, they struggle to reconcile their radically different lifestyles in the name of love." Along with the aforementioned actors, the Notting Hill cast includes English performers like Emma Chambers, Tim McInnerny, Gina McKee, and Hugh Bonneville 

Though Roberts and Grant have gone on to star in plenty of rom-coms since—the latter will return to the Bridget Jones franchise for the upcoming fourth film, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy—Notting Hill is one of the most beloved and acclaimed movies (it earned several BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations) of their respective resumes. And you can revisit the charming romance between Anna Scott and William Thacker by tuning into Notting Hill today, Sunday, June 2 on Starz Encore (West) at 10:50am Pacific Time. 

If you don't have access to cable, you can celebrate the 25th anniversary of Notting Hill by watching the rom-com on demand with an MGM+ subscription, which costs $6.99 per month. A lot of moviegoers are used to having Oscar-nominated movies premiere where they live after they've received those nominations; usually late January or early February. But it's not often an Oscar-nominated movie makes its US premiere more than two months after the Oscar trophies have been handed out. But that's the case for the Oscar-nominated animated feature Robot Dreams.

Though it lost to The Boy and the Heron for the top prize, Robot Dreams was one of the best-reviewed movies (animated or otherwise) of 2023. Hailing from Spanish filmmaker Pablo Berger, the movie was described as "beautiful, unexpected and tender" by Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro. With all these plaudits, there's a level of excitement for it to finally become available in the US.

Robot Dreams release date

Robot Dreams' long-awaited US release for general audiences is set for May 31. Whether the movie is available everywhere or will be released on a limited scale to start is not immediately clear.

Either way, May 31 is going to be a busy week for new movies, as Ezra, The Dead Don't Hurt, Summer Camp and Young Woman and the Sea.

The movie has already been released in the UK and is actually available to watch at home, with it available to rent through the on-demand platform Curzon.

Robot Dreams cast

Robot Dreams does not contain any dialogue, though it is not a silent movie, as the director is keen to point out. So even though the movie hails from a Spanish director, there is not going to be any need to feature any English-language actors to provide their voices or for audiences to read subtitles.

Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy star Hugh Grant has plenty of good things to say about the forthcoming fourth movie which sees 

In an interview with People, Wonka star Hugh Grant (who appeared in the first two Bridget Jones flicks) was keen to highlight that the movie will have a sense of humor and warmth.

"It is very moving as well as funny", Hugh Grant said. "It's partly based on Helen Fielding's experiences of bringing up two children by herself after her husband died. And so Bridget is bringing up two kids and wondering whether she should ever go back to dating. It's a very good script". 

This comes shortly after we got some big Bridget Jones 4 casting news. Leo Woodall (of the Netflix hit, One Day) is rumored to be playing a younger love interest for Bridget Jones (who will once again be played by Renée Zellweger).

In addition, Chiwetel Ejiofor is set to star in an as-yet-unconfirmed role, and Emma Thompson is also reprising the role of Dr. Rawlings. 

Beyond the above details, we don't know too much more about Bridget Jones: Mad About The Body beyond the fact we expect it to be based on Fielding's third Bridget Jones book of the same name and the movie's reportedly set eight years after the third installment, Bridget Jones's Baby, which was released back in 2016. 

As Grant teased, that title follows 51-year-old Bridget Jones as she navigates parenting. The book is set a few years after the sudden death of Mark Darcy (who was killed by a landmine in Sudan), and sees the single mother of two young children trying to navigate the dating world all over again. Of course, this being a Bridget Jones story, chaos and comedy are never far away. 

Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy is currently expected to hit US theaters and on Peacock on February 14, 2025. A UK release date has not been given at the time of writing.

Love, Divided (Pared con pared) follows young pianist Valentina (Aitana) who is preparing for a big audition. However, her musical talents are disrupted when she clashes with her next door neighbor David (Fernando Guallar), a sullen games inventor who requires complete silence to do his work. But can these warring neighbors find a compromise or could something else blossom from behind the wall?

Valentina moves into a new apartment to start afresh after breaking up with her ex-boyfriend Óscar (Miguel Ángel Muñoz) and is practicing for an audition. Although Valentina just wants to focus day and night on her audition, she eventually gives in to her cousin Carmen's demands that she get a job at the local smoothie bar.

Meanwhile, her new neighbor David is an agoraphobic game designer and is surrounded by gadgets he's created. His friend Nacho arrives with his groceries and encourages David to change his hermit lifestyle.

Later on, Valentina's musical talents are interrupted by a cacophony of scary noises coming from next door and she flees the apartment, spending the night at Óscar's home.

A terrified Valentina confronts David through the wall and he reveals that their apartments are barely soundproof and he requires absolute silence in order to work. David has successfully chased away every other tenant that has moved into the apartment next door by creating noisy inventions that make eerie noises at all hours. 

But Valentina is determined to put up a fight and they challenge each other to a noise-off to see who will leave their apartment first. He wakes her up early in the morning with loud banging, but he is sent over the edge when Valentina leaves her metronome ticking all day while she goes to work.

David gives in and begrudgingly agrees to let Valentina play her piano in the morning, while he works in the afternoon. However, tensions rise when David critiques Valentina’s piano playing and he later apologizes to her. 

The pair talk through their sides of the wall and get to know each other. David encourages Valentina to keep writing and singing her own songs, but she doesn’t believe in herself enough as Óscar pressured her into only focusing on playing the piano in order to be successful.

Love, Divided ending explained: do Valentina and David fall in love?

Despite never seeing each other in person, Valentina and David begin to develop feelings for each other and rearrange their apartments so their beds share the wall and they can sleep near each other.

In one incident, Valentina believes a random customer at the smoothie bar is David after he made a comment about wearing cowboy boots everyday. After giving him her number, Valentina invites the stranger over for dinner, but she soon realizes she has made a huge mistake and quickly escorts him out of her apartment.

Elsewhere, Nacho lures David out of his apartment with a lie and takes him to a toy shop who want to buy the rights to his games. However, David furiously rejects their offer and is escorted out by security when he lashes out.

Back at their homes, David invites Valentina over for dinner, but she instead suggests they keep their relationship the way it is and communicate through the wall, never seeing each other. They both acknowledge they like to be alone and make the unusual agreement to be "together but separate."

The pair continue to bond and cook a meal together from their apartments. Valentina invites Carmen over to meet her new boyfriend, meanwhile David brings Nacho and the four have dinner together through the wall. Carmen and Nacho are baffled at Valentina and David's relationship and attempt to make awkward small talk despite the strange situation. 

Valentina and David's relationship begins to fall apart when she invites her ex Óscar over to get his opinion on her audition since he's such a respected conductor. A jealous David can't help but make jibes at Óscar's pompous attitude and when Valentina is too distracted to play the piano piece, Óscar asks her to move in with him and attempts to kiss her.

Valentina quickly rejects his advances and in a bid to get him to leave, David uses his contraptions to make deafening noises. An apologetic Óscar leaves and Valentina lays into David for his behavior. She asks how they are going to maintain their relationship through the wall if they can't trust each other and insists that she doesn't need someone telling her how to live her life.

Things are made worse when Carmen sneaks into Valentina's apartment to have sex with a man and David thinks it's Valentina. Later on, Valentina returns home to make amends, but David has no interest in talking and is extremely hurt by what he heard earlier.

Valentina finds Carmen's scarf on the floor and realizes what's happened, but as she attempts to explain the situation, David shuts her down.

Thinking that David doesn't trust her, Valentina ends their relationship and David watches a childhood video of him, Nacho and a young girl called María playing in the toy shop that he now owns with Nacho.

When David pays a visit to the toy shop, he's gutted to see that it's closing down but Nacho never told him. Nacho encourages David to get his life back after the death of his fiancé María, who was also Nacho's sister.

It's the day of Valentina's audition and as she takes to the stage, David sneaks backstage and gives her some advice on how to play Beethoven. She takes his suggestion on-board and instead performs an original piece she wrote.

Although Valentina doesn't pass the audition, the judge tells her to get in contact with her close friend who is a record producer and praises her talent. However, Óscar is furious, but she doesn't care and is ready to face her future and see David in real life. 

When Valentina runs home, she and David break down the wall between their apartments. She climbs through the opening and into his arms as they see one another for the first time.

“Hello,” he says and they kiss passionately.

Spanish singer Aitana makes her movie debut in Love, Divided as Valentina, a young pianist preparing for an audition. She moves into her new apartment to start afresh after leaving her ex-boyfriend.

But when she's forced to deal with her eccentric neighbour who can only work in absolute silence, she faces the challenges of love while trying to navigate her career.

Aitana is a Spanish singer and songwriter, who shot to stardom after being a runner-up in the Spanish talent competition Operación Triunfo. This is her first movie role, but she previously starred in the Disney Plus musical romantic drama La Última and has been a coach on La Voz Kids (The Voice Kids).

Fernando Guallar as David

Fernando Guallar plays David, Valentina's reclusive neighbor who hasn't been outside in three years. David is a games designer who can only concentrate in complete silence, so he is less than happy when Valentina disrupts his quiet environment and proves to be a distraction.

When Valentina learns about his habit, the pair go on a mission to see who will leave their apartment first by going out of their way to irritate each other — all while communicating through a wall.

Fernando has an extensive filmography, having appeared in My Heart Goes Boom!, Postcards, The Tenderness, In Family I Trust and Red Queen.

Natalia Rodríguez as Carmen

Natalia Rodríguez portrays Carmen, Valentina's cousin and best friend. She is always on hand to support Valentina through her troubles.

Natalia's acting credits include Isabel, Intruders, Terrario and El Capitán Trueno y el Santo Grial.

Adam Jezierski as Nacho

Adam Jezierski stars as Nacho, David's friend who encourages him to change his ways and stop being a hermit. He owns a toy store with David and often buys groceries for him as he won't leave his home.

The Polish actor is known for his role as Gorka Martínez Mora in Física o Química and has starred in Los Farad, Fat People and Verbo.

Miguel Ángel Muñoz as Óscar

Miguel Ángel Muñoz portrays Óscar, Valentina's ex-boyfriend. The self-absorbed conductor pushes Valentina to play professional piano, despite her love of signing and song writing to make himself look better.

Miguel started acting when he was a child in the movie El Palomo cojo and has gone on to make many TV appearances such as Al salir de clase, Compañeros and Un Paso Adelante. He also dubbed the voice of Sinbad in the Spanish version of the animated movie Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas.

Paco Tous as Sebas

Paco Tous is Sebas, Valentina's boss at the smoothie bar she works at. He gives Valentina words of wisdom that guide her through her complicated journey.

The actor is best known for playing Paco in Los hombres de Paco and Moscow in the Netflix hit Money Heist. Paco has also appeared in Zorro, Apaches and Allí abajo.
