For a while there, it felt like we were all watching a simulation of Sex and the City, some kind of ChatGPT-fueled adaptation that similarly followed the romantic adventures of Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) and co., but only sort of.

And Just Like That, the spinoff series of that HBO classic, was the closest thing we'd all get to having SATC back on our screens each week. All of the disparate parts were there (well, all except the token sauciness of Kim Cattrall's Samantha Jones, who only popped up in one measly cameo): Bradshaw, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis were reprising their iconic roles as BFFs Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte, with former SATC showrunner Michael Patrick King back to captain the fabulous ship. There was Aidan (John Corbett), Harry (Evan Handler), Steve (David Eigenberg), Anthony (Mario Cantone) and New York. It certainly looked like Sex and the City.

But it didn't feel like it—across three seasons on HBO Max, AJLT failed to live up to the magic of its pioneering predecessor, lacking the cheeky wit, substantial heart and insightful social commentary of the original. Most offensive of all, the beloved lead trio became darn-near unrecognizable: Carrie, too rich, passive and incurious; Charlotte, too goofy and dog-obsessed; and Miranda, too everything.

However, at the near end of the series' third season, it's felt like the powers that be have finally tapped in that SATC spirit: after fumbling its way around incorporating new characters like Nya Wallace (Karen Pittman), Seema Patel (Sarita Choudhury), Lisa Todd Wexley (Nicole Ari Parker) and—gulp— Che Diaz (Sara Ramirez) in its first two installments, the show has rightfully recentered the focus on Carrie and her own romantic entanglements and close friendships, the very sustenance that fueled the original series through six seasons and two films.

The emotional dissolution of Carrie's relationship with—spoiler alert—on-and-off-again love Aidan felt like classic Bradshaw (it helped that their romance-ending fight was one those characters have been having for decades, ever since Sex and the City itself), as did the lightness of her sweet rebound with fellow writer Duncan Reeves (Jonathan Cake). The end of episode 9, "Present Tense," saw a newly single Carrie joining her girlfriends for some commiseration cocktails, reaffirming—as SATC always had—that the women she surrounded herself with were the true loves of her life.

Sadly, though, those Sex and the City-worthy qualities have come far too late: And Just Like That has officially been axed by HBO Max, with King personally announcing the spinoff's cancelation on his social media accounts: "While I was writing the last episode of And Just Like That... season 3, it became clear to me that this might be a wonderful place to stop," he wrote.

He added: "Along with Sarah Jessica Parker, Casey Bloys and Sarah Aubrey, we decided to end the popular series this year with a two-part finale and extended the original series order from 10 episodes to 12. SJP and I held off announcing the news until now because we didn't want the world 'final' to overshadow the fun of watching the season."

The sequel series will air its final episode on Thursday, August 14. And while it's certainly sad for longtime fans to have to say a last goodbye to Carrie Bradshaw, Charlotte York, Miranda Hobbes and the rest of the Sex and the City universe, at least we're glad that, for a moment there, said universe was looking far more like familiar territory than it had in years.

If you're looking for something to watch featuring young New Yorkers navigating love and life in the big city, there's a new series on Netflix starring Anna Kendrick that you might enjoy. Love Life originally aired for two seasons on HBO Max but has branched out to the global streaming service.

The logline for the series, created by Sam Boyd, reads, "From first impressions to lasting connections, New Yorkers navigate the twists and turns of love in this romantic comedy anthology series."

Love Life, which premiered in 2021, was one of HBO Max's first original scripted series when the fledgling streaming service debuted. It features Kendrick as Darby and William Jackson Harper as Marcus; the first season follows Darby's story while season 2 is devoted to Marcus. The series also features a number of cast members who show up in both seasons including Zoë Chao, Peter Vack, Sasha Compère, Lesley Manville, Jessica Williams, Christopher Powekk, Punkie Johnson and Keith David.

The series was popular with viewers and critics alike with a 79% "Certified Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Though fans enjoyed the premise and change of perspectives between the seasons, the series was an early victim of Warner Bros. Discovery's cost cutting measures. Some of the other series with a similar fate at the time include Gordita Chronicles and Minx.

After it was pulled from the streamer, Love Life languished in cold storage for a while before emerging recently on paid video on-demand platforms as well as Tubi, so being available to access the series on Netflix is a welcome change.

With 20 episodes between the two seasons, Love Life would be a great series to binge for anyone missing Emily in Paris, Girls or even the early days of Sex and the City. Though dating is at the forefront, there's a lot of self-reflection that takes place in Darby and Marcus' lives and viewers get to go along for the ride as they figure out their place in the world. With its vibrant characters, fast pacing and whip-smart writing, Love Life makes for a perfect weekend or late-night binge.

Who do you want to spend eternity with? That is the question at the heart of the new comedy, drama, fantasy, romance A24 movie starring Elizabeth Olsen, Miles Turner and Callum Turner, aptly titled Eternity.

This is another 2025 new movie from fan-favorite studio A24. Already in 2025, they’ve released movies that include Parthenope, Warfare, Friendship, Materialists, Eddington and more, with Highest 2 Lowest, The Smashing Machine, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You and Marty Supreme also on the docket for this year.

We don’t have a specific release date for Eternity at this time, but press materials shared by A24 indicate that the movie will be released in November. With that said, it can be a lot to scroll through, so allow me to offer my humble services in helping you find the new movies on streaming that you are not going to want to miss.

The below list of movies is taken from the major streaming services: Apple TV Plus, Disney Plus, HBO Max, Hulu, Netflix, Paramount Plus, Peacock and Prime Video. I'm also specifically picking movies that are new to streaming this month — in this case, these are 12 movies that are landing on one of the major streamers for the first time, or coming back to streaming services after only being available via on-demand.

So without further ado, here are my picks for the 12 movies to stream in August.

The Departed (Netflix)

Martin Scorsese's The Departed will always have a special place in my heart, as this Best Picture winner was my first real introduction to the master filmmaker. I've of course watched as much of his filmography as I can since then, but The Departed sticks with me as it is fun, has some great performances (particularly from Leonardo DiCaprio and Jack Nicholson) and is layered with details that enrich repeat viewings (the use of X in the movie has been well documented). While Scorsese has a lot of things in the works (including The Devil in the White City), we don't know for sure when we're getting his next movie. So streaming The Departed is a good way to bide our time.

Eenie Meanie (Hulu)

Samara Weaving has starred in a number of fan-favorite movies, including Ready or Not and Guns Akimbo. Could Eenie Meanie be next? The action movie sees her star as a former getaway driver brought back into the criminal world when her former employer offers her a chance to save her ex-boyfriend. A great supporting cast is on hand for this one as well, with Steve Zahn, Randall Park, Andy Garcia, Karl Glusman and Marshawn Lynch. Here's hoping this one puts the pedal to the metal for a fun watch.

Final Destination Bloodlines (HBO Max)

One of the biggest movies of the year makes its streaming debut to kick off August with Final Destination Bloodlines. The latest sequel in the horror franchise that is now 25 years old is widely viewed as the best, earning a 93% "Certified Fresh" score on Rotten Tomatoes. Focusing on a family, the characters learn that them being marked for death is something that has been lying in wait for generations. While the crazy deaths are a highlight as always, the movie also serves as one of the final performances from horror legend Tony Todd, so be sure to give a tip of the cap to him if you watch.

Freaky Tales (HBO Max)

It's been a big year for Pedro Pascal with The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Eddington, Materialists and The Last of Us season 2, but one movie of his you may have missed from this year is Freaky Tales. Set in 1987 Oakland, Calif., Freaky Tales answers the question of what happens when an NBA star, a corrupt cop, a female rap duo, teen punks, neo-Nazis and a debt collector collide. Written and directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (the duo behind Captain Marvel), it's flown under the radar, but audiences who have seen it have enjoyed it, based on the 89% positive score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Friend (Paramount Plus)

This one is for all the dog lovers out there, as the breakout star of The Friend is the Great Dane Bing, who plays the central pooch in the movie, Apollo. The human star of the movie is Naomi Watts, who plays an English professor who unexpectedly is tasked with caring for Apollo after his owner and her mentor dies, and has to figure out if and how the dog can fit into her life. While it is a SPOILER, if anyone is on the fence about this movie, wondering if the dog dies or not, I will assure you that while this is a dramedy, Apollo makes it through A OK.

The Monkey (Hulu)

Similar to Pedro Pascal, 2025 has been a big year for Stephen King, as The Life of Chuck, The Institute and soon The Long Walk have all been adapted for the screen. But my personal favorite from these King offerings this year is the absurdly fun The Monkey. Theo James stars as twins whose lives have been tormented for years by a toy monkey that has been a part of a number of surprising deaths over the years. When the monkey resurfaces, they have to figure out how to stop it before someone else they love dies. Like Final Destination Bloodlines, if you're a fan of outrageous, gory deaths, then this will be a must-watch.

Mother! (Paramount Plus)

Mother! is one of the craziest movies I've ever seen, and I loved it. Darren Aronofsky uses the story of a woman (Jennifer Lawrence) whose life is turned upside down when her poet husband (Javier Bardem) gets a group of fervent fans at the house they are remodeling. From there, the movie draws parallels to the environment, religion and fanaticism in a psychological horror. It certainly won't be everyone's cup of tea, but it's a fascinating piece of work from Aronofsky, and a committed performance from Lawrence.

My Oxford Year (Netflix)

On the opposite end of the spectrum from Mother! is the new Netflix romance movie My Oxford Year. Sofia Carson stars as an American student at Oxford whose life takes a surprising turn when she meets a local boy, played by Corey Mylchreest. Dougray Scott and Catherine McCormack also star in this movie from Iain Morris (Time Bandits, The Inbetweeners). The fact that the movie was filmed on location on the Oxford Campus should also be a fun treat for viewers.

Night Always Comes (Netflix)

Another member of The Fantastic Four is back with another movie this month, as Vanessa Kirby stars in the Netflix original movie Night Always Comes. This one is a crime drama, with Kirby playing a woman who must confront her dark past over the course of one long night as she looks to secure a future for her and the brother she cares for. Kirby reunites with Benjamin Caron, who directed multiple episodes of The Crown (as well as Andor), for Night Always Comes.

The Pickup (Prime Video)

Keke Palmer has already starred in one of the best comedies of the year in One of Them Days. Does she have another hit on her hand in The Pickup? Palmer stars alongside comedy icon Eddie Murphy and Pete Davidson in this action comedy, where Murphy and Davidson are armored truck drivers and Palmer plays a criminal looking to use them to score big, though she has a bit of history with Davidson's character that should make for plenty of fun banter. Ride Along director Tim Story directs.

The Thursday Murder Club (Netflix)

Richard Osman's best-selling murder mystery book The Thursday Murder Club is being adapted into the next big Netflix original movie. The all-star cast of Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley and Celia Imrie stars as four retirees who forgo the knitting circle and instead spend their golden years looking into cold case murders. But when one case proves to be not so cold, the group puts their skills to the test to get justice. There are five books in total in the Thursday Murder Club series, so if this one proves to be a hit, Netflix could have a new franchise on their hands.

The series has enjoyed incredible success over the last few seasons, with The Summer I Turned Pretty season 2 being one of the 10 most-watched seasons of any series ever on Prime Video. The success of the second season also more than doubled the first season's viewership within three days of its launch.

Once again, the show is based on the best-selling book trilogy from Jenny Han, who serves as a co-showrunner along with Sarah Kucserka, and fans will be reunited with Isabel ‘Belly’ Conklin (Lola Tung) as she is faced with making a final choice between two brothers, Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) and Conrad (Christopher Briney).

Every generation has its own A Star Is Born. From the 1937 original, through the Hollywood-ised 1954 version with Judy Garland to the Barbra Streisand 1976 vehicle, which moved to the world of rock music, it’s the classic showbiz fairytale with an uncanny knack of appealing to new audiences time after time.

And, it did it again in 2018, with a re-telling for the early 21^st century that captured the hearts and minds of critics and cinemagoers alike. It arrives in all its glory on Netflix today (8 July).

Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut stuck to the essential fairytale, with a young, struggling performer discovered by an established name whose own career is on the slide.

He encourages her talent and the two fall in love but, as her rise is meteoric, his decline continues and it’s no spoiler to say there’s never going to be a happy ending for them.

In Cooper’s version, he also plays fading country music star Jackson Maine, whose battle with alcohol is spelling the end of his years at the top when he discovers talented singer Ally (Lady Gaga). Her love and rapid success give him a new lease of life but, eclipsed by her popularity, he falls back into self-destruction.

Back in 2011, Clint Eastwood was set to direct, with Beyonce confirmed as the film’s star but her pregnancy delayed the project, Eastwood went off to work on another film and, inspired by a conversation with him during the making of American Sniper, Cooper grasped the opportunity to take the director’s chair.

The result wasn’t simply a remake of a perennial classic. It walked the precarious tightrope of holding on to its connection with the previous films while giving the story a gritty urgency of its own and did it with unerring assurance.

Cooper’s passion for the project was written all over it, from the performances to the vital script and the strong sense that this was very much a movie of its time. Wrapped in glamour, romance and tragedy, the quintessential showbiz drama was nominated for eight Oscars and scored 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. And, less than twelve months after the film’s release, its soundtrack had sold six million albums worldwide.

Despite the popularity of all four versions of the story and its ability to appeal to the ever-changing tastes of audiences across the decades, A Star Is Born has gained a reputation for being unlucky, if not cursed, when it comes to recognition. Despite those eight Oscar nods, Cooper’s version only walked away with one trophy, and that was for Best Original Song. Both he and Lady Gaga were nominated in their respective acting categories but his name was noticeable by its absence among the Best Director nods and it was considered the biggest Oscar snub of the year.

When the first film was released in 1937, there was perhaps a hint of the luck – or perhaps irony – that was to surround its successors.

Set in Hollywood, it saw Janet Gaynor as the aspiring actress who wins a Best Actress Oscar with the help of an alcoholic actor played by Fredric March. Nominated in seven categories at the 1938 ceremony, it only went home with one statuette for what was then Best Original Story. Neither Gaynor nor March’s nods translated into wins. Even though this version is often forgotten, it’s still much loved by those who have seen it, especially for its satirical look at the Hollywood glamour machine, the razor-sharp dialogue and beautiful performances from the two leads.

Perhaps the strongest evidence of some kind of curse surrounding the film came at the 1955 Oscars, when George Cukor’s remake was nominated for seven awards.

Considered by many as the ultimate version – it scored 98% on Rotten Tomatoes - it starred Judy Garland and James Mason, both of whom were nominated for their performances. Again set in Hollywood, its most iconic moment saw Garland as the rising star receiving a Best Actress Oscar, only for the moment to be spoiled by her husband.

On the real Oscar night, Garland herself was in hospital, having given birth to her son Joey Luft, but such was the overwhelming confidence that she was a shoo-in that TV crews invaded her hospital room before the ceremony so they could capture her moment of victory. The award went to outsider Grace Kelly for the now almost-forgotten The Country Girl – and Garland watched while the camera crews packed up their equipment and left. Yet the role is still the one millions associate with her.

Just over 20 years later, the story moved from Hollywood to the music business in a version that took over $100 million at the global box office but received very mixed critical reactions.

What looked like a vehicle for its leading lady, Barbra Streisand – she was an uncredited writer and it was produced by her then long-term boyfriend, Jon Peters – paired her with Kris Kristofferson but, although the film received four Oscar nominations, neither of their names made it to the shortlist. Its love theme, Evergreen, however, walked away with the trophy for Best Original Song.

It's now seven years since audiences were clamouring for tickets to see Cooper and Gaga in A Star Is Born and, based on the film’s history, we may have to wait several decades for another remake.

But when the most recent one pulls off what seems like the impossible - a film that’s both timeless and very much of its time - it hardly seems to matter. And, given the enduring popularity of all four movies, perhaps what looks like a curse is more of an advantage.

Materialists, a new romance movie starring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal, is now playing in movie theaters and is definitely worth the watch (read our Materialists review if you need any convincing).

The 2025 new movie is the second feature from Celine Song, who had one of the best directorial debuts in recent memory with Past Lives.

However, despite this only being Song’s second movie, she actually had a couple of Easter eggs in Materialists that nods back to her past work. Did you catch them?

No worries if not, that’s where we come in. Let us fill you in on the pair of Materialists Easter eggs. FYI, some minor SPOILERS ahead, so if you haven’t seen the movie, here’s how to watch Materialists right now.

The play in Materialists is real

The first involves the off-(off?) Broadway play that Evans’ John is in and invites Johnson’s Lucy (and inadvertently Pascal’s Harry) to. We only see a quick scene from the play, but it features John sitting on stage with a woman that his character is on a date with. John and the other actress speak bluntly, reciting lines like “my mother and father had sex. I was born. I grew up. I entered this restaurant. I’m on a date.”

If you were a bit curious whether or not that play was real, it actually is, and it was written by none other than Song.

Titled Tom & Eliza, Song wrote the play in the mid 2010s and it was performed in 2016, as before she became an acclaimed filmmaker she worked as a playwright. The whole play features direct, rapid-fire language like we see in the Materialists scene, as the description from the New Play Exchange says it is about “two people marching relentlessly toward the future.”

In fact, the movie lets you know that this is Song’s play, as after the quick scene we see we catch up with John, Lucy and Harry outside the small theater and there is a poster of the play, with Celine Song’s name visible on it.

A Past Lives actor makes a cameo in Materialists

The other notable Easter egg in Materialists is a callback to Song’s Past Lives, as one of her main actors has a brief cameo in the movie. Not physically, but as a voice on a phone call that is critical to the characters.

Throughout the movie, Lucy is trying to find a good match for her client Sophie (Zoe Winters), who unfortunately has had a string of bad dates and failed matches. Lucy’s latest attempt is setting Sophie up with a man named Mark, who she believes checks a lot of boxes for what Sophie is looking for.

The morning after the date, Lucy calls Mark to find out how everything went. The voice of Mark is provided by John Magaro, who played Arthur (the husband to Greta Lee’s Nora) in Past Lives. This 30-second (or so) conversation is all we get from Magaro in the movie, but his character has a major presence.

Though Mark said he had a good time on the date, which excites Lucy as it’s been hard to find a match for Sophie, it is soon revealed that Sophie was assaulted by Mark. Lucy feels an incredible amount of guilt about how she could have missed that Mark was capable of something like that, which sends her on a complete reevaluation of her career and life.

The brief role was a complete 180 from Magaro’s nice-guy Arthur in Past Lives, but if you recognized the voice right away that likely paid a part in the shock of the reveal.

One other quick one, which isn’t really an Easter egg but is just an interesting fact for the movie. While we noted that Song was a playwright prior to becoming a filmmaker, for a brief time she was also a matchmaker, as she told Deadline. That clearly served as inspiration for Materialists.

Materialists is playing exclusively in movie theaters in the US, Canada and other regions; premieres in the UK on August 15.

While we don’t know exactly when Materialists will be streaming, we do know where — HBO Max. The streaming service has served as the initial streaming home for all A24 movies for the last couple of years (it recently added A24 movies Parthenope, The Brutalist and others), and that is continuing for the foreseeable future.

WTW’s official Materialists review says the movie “will charm you with its honest take on modern love.” It definitely has charmed more than just us, as the movie has a “Fresh” score of 86% (as of publication) on Rotten Tomatoes.

After one of the best directorial debuts in recent memory with Past Lives, what does writer/director Celine Song have up her sleeves for her second movie, Materialists? How about a sophisticated take down on modern dating that also doubles as a sincere rallying cry for the value of love in our lives that will win you over with its charm.

Materialists centers on Lucy (Dakota Johnson), a professional matchmaker in New York City. She sees relationships as a numbers game/business — what traits are non-negotiables and how many boxes does someone check off for one of her clients. One day, she meets Harry (Pedro Pascal), a unicorn — the type of partner that has the whole package just about everyone would want, including Lucy. The two start to date, but the picture gets a little complicated when Lucy’s ex-boyfriend John (Chris Evans) pops back up in her life.

You can guess what happens from there — a love triangle where Lucy must pick which guy she thinks would be the better potential partner to spend the rest of her life with. However, where Materialists succeeds is that its romantic rivalry isn’t easy to call. Neither Pascal’s Harry or Evan’s John are unlikeable characters; they both truly seem to care for Lucy. The question then is what is more important to Lucy, the fact that someone like Harry is a perfect match, or the natural connection she has with John?

Helping the love triangle are the great performances by Pascal and Evans. Two of pop culture’s biggest crushes, Materialists is only going to solidify their appeal. Pascal plays Harry suave but sincere; he’s calculating, but a reveal later on shows why, in a scene Pascal plays well. Evans’ John, meanwhile, is a mess, but the actor gives John an affable quality; he also nails a pivotal scene that could become quotable among romance fans for years to come.

The weak link in the triangle is Johnson, but I’m having a hard time figuring out if it’s her performance or a rare weakness in Song’s script. Johnson plays Lucy a bit flat and detached for a lot of the movie, though there are moments where she adds a spark of sincerity to the character. However, Lucy’s character is meant to be cold and calculating — she literally describes herself that way at times. Did Johnson play that aspect of her character too much or did Song not give us enough of Lucy outside of her relationships/work to really get to know her? It’s one of the few elements of the movie that isn't firing on all cylinders.

What makes it more complex is that the calculations that these characters are doing is part of what makes the movie work. Lucy treats relationships like a business deal, to the extent that one of the best scenes of the movie features Lucy and Harry discussing why they like each other in terms of material assets that can be traded on the stock market. While Materialists definitely has more of a Hollywood feel to it than Past Lives, Song is still able to portray mature, honest feelings about love and relationships that make it stand out from contemporary Hollywood romances. So while it may not check every box, Materialists is a movie worth falling for.

Anyone want to hit the road through time and space with Colin Farrell and Margot Robbie? That is what looks to be on the table with A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, a 2025 new movie that blends romance and fantasy.

Farrell briefly teased the movie in an interview with Collider back in 2024. He described A Big Bold Beautiful Journey as “magical realism.” “It’s grounded in a world that we recognize, but it also is removed enough into the world of fantastical that it goes into these kinds of whimsical places,” he added.

With the start of another month, Hulu's library is getting a lot of new additions, particularly on the movie side. New to Hulu this month are a couple of 2025 new movies, including a Hulu original, as well as some older favorites that are always worth a revisit.

It feels like we've all collectively forgotten about Beasts of the Southern Wild. That's definitely an oversight, as the movie, which was an indie sensation and a Best Picture nominee from 2012, is a magical story that features an incredible performance from a young Quvenzhané Wallis. It's time to rediscover the gem that is Beasts of the Southern Wild.

Before Midnight (2013)

• Catch up with Jesse and Celine with the third Before movie on June 1

I've made my love for the Before franchise very clear when I dubbed Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Deply) as the greatest movie couple ever, so of course I'm excited that Before Midnight, the third and last entry in their story, hits Hulu this month. Picking up with the couple nine years after their Paris rendezvous, this time in Greece, Before Midnight is a perfect closing chapter for their story (barring Hawke, Deply and Linklater catching up with these characters again further down the line).

Dude, Where's My Car? (2000)

• The stone comedy is available on Hulu as of June 1

There are better movies that are going to be streaming on Hulu in June than Dude, Where's My Car? This pick is a pure nostalgia play for me, as the Ashton Kutcher and Sean William Scott stoner comedy was one of the first "raunchy" movies that I saw growing up. I can still quote large chunks of the movie. So if Dude, Where's My Car? has a special place in your heart, then you can stream it on Hulu this month.

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (2015)

• Watch the coming-of-age comedy starting June 1 on Hulu

Here's another movie that has been a bit overlooked since its release. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl is a coming-of-age teen comedy that was a breakout for young stars Olivia Cooke, Thomas Mann and RJ Cyler. It's a funny and touching story that doesn’t pander to its primary teen audience, offering a mature take on growing up, connection and death.

Presence (2025)

• Steven Soderbergh's other acclaimed 2025 movie starts streaming on June 3

Steven Soderbergh has made not one (Black Bag) but two critically-acclaimed movies that were released in the first few months of 2025, with the other being the haunted house movie Presence. "Certified Fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes, Lucy Liu headlines the movie that finally looks to find its audience on streaming.

Hot Shots! (1991)

• The Top Gun parody movie lands on Hulu on June 6

Jim Abrahams, who was part of the writing/directing team that made probably the greatest parody movie ever in Airplane, also wrote and directed this brilliant spoof of Top Gun, as well as poking some fun at other hit movies of the 80s. Charlie Sheen stars as the Tom Cruise stand-in, alongside Cary Elwes, Valeria Golina, Jon Cryer and Lloyd Bridges. The sequel, Hot Shots! Part Deux, which pokes fun at the Rambo movies, is also available to stream starting June 6.

Predator: Killer of Killers (2025)

• Original animated Predator movie premieres on June 6

Dan Trachtenberg revitalized the Predator franchise with Prey and will have a brand-new live-action movie, Predator: Badlands, releasing later in 2025. But before that, he's co-directed this animated addition to the franchise that will be a must-watch for sci-fi fans. This new movie includes three timelines where fierce warriors from different eras of human history are forced to take on a Predator.

To Barcelona, With Love is the first installment of a duet of movies set in Spain and featuring Alison Sweeney and Ashley Williams. The movie is part of the Passport to Love 2025 celebration on Hallmark Channel.

When the legend that is Parasite director Bong Joon-ho showers a film with praise, you know you’re in for something truly special. To use his own words about Netflix’s first-ever Korean animation, “This visual masterpiece will take you around the universe,” and his verdict has sent excitement sky high for director Han Ji-won’s vision of the future. And the wait for Lost In Starlight is over as Netflix has added it today [Friday, May 30] globally.

While anime fans have known for a while that the film was on its way, Netflix ramped up expectations by keeping any images close to their chest. But that all changed a few weeks ago with the arrival of a teaser poster, followed swiftly by a trailer that shows not only the extent of the fantastical visual storytelling we can expect from the film, but the importance of music to the story.

There’s a sense of nostalgia in the poster, with a record player and vinyl albums pointing towards a unique cyberpunk universe, while the trailer itself gives a first taste of the film’s evocative soundtrack.

In Han Ji-won’s feature debut, the setting is Seoul in 2050 and it's a romantic tale of aspiring astronaut Nan-young, who dreams of making it to Mars, and reluctant musician Jay.

In a story of love, ambition and separation, the couple meet when Nan-young visits an audio equipment repair store in the hope they can repair an old record player left behind by her mother. It’s there that she runs into Jay and a romance slowly blossoms.

But they have to prepare for the prospect of being millions of miles apart as Nan-young goes deeper into her Mars research and gets the chance to go to the red planet. She’s also encouraged Jay to re-discover his love of music but, with separation looming, they have no idea how it will affect their dreams of being together.

The use of light in the visuals will rock you in your seat. The impact is extraordinary, a combination of delicacy and literal brilliance, with cities drenched in sunlight and voyages to the stars wrapped in velvet darkness.

Down-to-earth scenes of Seoul are beautifully re-created through Han Ji-won's stunningly evocative drawings, capturing the pulsating thrill and uncertainty of new love. There's also the sense that, at the heart of the film, is a mystery which seems to echo Interstellar, while the constant dangers of deep space start to get in the way of Nan-young returning to Earth to be with her lover.

In the Korean language version, Nan-young is voiced by Kim Tae-ri, while Hong Kyung is the voice of Jay. For the English language dub, Justin H Min (The Umbrella Academy, After Yang) is Jay, and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan (Never Have I Ever, Turning Red) plays Nan-Young.

Early reactions to Lost in Starlight beg an immediate question. Could it become the feature film equivalent of Netflix’s record-breaking South Korean phenomenon, Squid Game?

It may not reach the same dizzy audience numbers, but it might easily provide the perfect antidote to the streamer’s number one non-English language series of all time. As Netflix’s most successful launch ever, Squid Game attracted 265,200,000 views for its opening episode in 2021, and the clock is ticking as it moves into its third and final series on June 27. Picking up straight after the brutal cliffhanger at the end of season two, a failed rebellion, the death of a friend, and a secret betrayal are all on the cards. Fans of Korean animation and drama — or both — will be in their element.

Looking for some new movies to stream in June? Well great news, there are plenty of options across the likes of Netflix, Max, Disney Plus and all of the major streaming services this month. With that said, it can be a lot to scroll through, so allow me to offer my humble services in helping you find the new movies on streaming that you are not going to want to miss.

The below list of movies are taken from the major streaming services: Apple TV Plus, Disney Plus, Hulu, Max, Netflix, Paramount Plus, Peacock and Prime Video. I'm also specifically picking movies that are new to streaming this month — in this case, these are 15 movies that are landing on one of the major streamers for the first time, or coming back to streaming services after only being available via on-demand.

So without further ado, here are my picks for the 15 movies to stream in June.

The Actor (Hulu)

While The Actor made very little noise at the box office, it did seem to resonate with those who saw it, as the movie earned a 90% positive score from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. So what is this indie movie about? Based on the novel Memory by Donald E. Westlake, The Actor is a psychological drama about a man who is left for dead in a small town in 1950s Ohio, with his memory completely gone. He must figure out how to reclaim what he has lost. Andre Holland stars alongside Gemma Chan, Toby Jones and more.

Beasts of the Southern Wild (Hulu)

Beasts of the Southern Wild is a magical movie. The southern folk tale focuses on a young girl named Hushpuppy, played by Quvenzhané Wallis, who must go on an adventure to save her ill father and their bayou home as it is threatened by melting ice-caps and mythical beasts. Director Behn Zeitline has unfortunately not made a movie to rival this one (his only other feature credit to date is 2020’s Wendy, which came and went with little fanfare), but if his sole movie of note is Beasts of the Southern Wild, then he’s put his stamp on cinema with a gem that deserves to be rediscovered.

Before Midnight (Hulu)

To help mark the 30th anniversary of Before Sunrise, I declared the movie’s central couple Jesse and Celine, played by Ethan Hawke and Julie Deply, as the greatest movie couple of all time. That’s not just because of their magical night in Vienna, but the entire run of their relationship that we see in Before Sunset and Before Midnight. You can experience the latter on streaming again in June. Before Midnight picks up with Jesse and Celine after another nine years. They are married and vacationing in Greece with their family, but is the spark that they had in Vienna and Paris something that is built to last?

The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie (Max)

Looney Tunes were a big part of growing up for me, as I loved watching the old cartoons. Well, kids today have gotten their very own Looney Tunes original, and it’s a feature-length movie. In The Day the Earth Blew Up, Daffy Duck and Porky Pig must save the world from an alien invasion; expect wacky antics to ensue. The Day the Earth Blew Up is “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes. With kids at home for the summer from school, the timing is perfect to give them something fun to watch.

Frozen: The Hit Broadway Musical (Disney Plus)

Fans of Frozen can watch the well known story of Anna, Elsa and Olaf in an entirely new way, as a Broadway production. Telling the same story and featuring iconic songs like “For the First Time in Forever,” “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” and of course “Let It Go,” the recording of the stage production also features 12 new original songs. Disney previously had a massive streaming hit with a recording of Hamilton on Broadway, this could be something just as big.

The Intern (Netflix)

It’s crazy to think that Nancy Meyers hasn’t made a movie since 2015’s The Intern (she was working on a project with Netflix but it was ultimately scrapped because of budget concerns). While I wouldn’t say that The Intern is her best movie (The Holiday, Something’s Gotta Give top the list for me), The Intern is a charming movie about a retiree (Robert De Niro) deciding to rejuvenate his life by becoming an intern for a startup, where he becomes a key ally and confident to the novice CEO (Anne Hathaway). It’s the easy kind of watch that you just need some times.

Jaws (Peacock)

Summer is beach season, which makes the terror of Jaws all the more palpable; don’t worry, shark attacks are not nearly as prevalent as Steven Spielberg’s breakout movie (though notably not Spielberg’s first big-screen movie) would make it seem. The all-time classic celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2025, so there’s no better time to watch.

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (Hulu)

Another underrated gem from 2015 to stream this month is Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. A coming-of-age comedy with some darker tones focuses on a high schooler that befriends a classmate that has been diagnosed with cancer. A breakout movie for Olivia Cooke (who plays the titular dying girl), Thomas Mann and RJ Cyler — supported by the likes of Nick Offerman, Molly Shannon, Connie Britton and Jon Bernthal — the movie doesn’t pander to its primary teen audience, offering a mature take on growing up, connection and death.

A Minecraft Movie (Max)

While we don’t have an exact date, we do know that the biggest movie of 2025 to date is coming to streaming in June, as A Minecraft Movie is set to premiere on Max. After raking in early a billion dollars worldwide and causing quite the stir in theaters (thanks in large part to the chicken jockey), the video game adaptation hits home, allowing fans to dive into the world of Minecraft once again.

An exact streaming premiere date for A Minecraft Movie is not available as of publication.

Parthenope (Max)

Parthenope the movie is much like Pathenope the character, mysterious (perhaps a bit confusing) yet quite alluring. The movie was not a big hit with most critics, but I enjoyed Paolo Sorrentino’s exploration of Naples through the years via the perspective of the titular young woman, played by newcomer Celeste Dalla Porta (read my Parthenope review for more details on why). The movie also features a brief supporting turn from Gary Oldman as famous author John Cheever. While I don’t know if it’s one of the best, Parthenope is definitely one of the most intriguing movies of the year.

Steven Soderbergh’s other 2025 new movie, aside from Black Bag, is a haunted house movie that has also received great critical acclaim (“Certified Fresh” at 88%). Despite the solid reviews, Presence got little fanfare at the early year box office, so this is going to be the chance for the movie — starring Lucy Liu, Chris Sullivan and Julia Fox — to finally find its audience.

Rear Window (Netflix)

Netflix is giving legendary director Alfred Hitchcock the spotlight in June, as the streaming service is adding six of his movies, including classics like Vertigo and The Birds. But my pick of the Hitchcock movie you need to watch on Netflix this month is Rear Window. The movie stars Jimmy Stewart as a professional photographer bored out of his mind while recovering from a broken leg, who begins to watch the neighbors in his apartment complex. Things get dicey when he begins to suspect that one neighbor has murdered his wife. This is one of my favorite Hitchcock movies, and is a perfect sampling to see why he is considered one of the greatest directors of all time.

Sally (Disney Plus/Hulu)

An American icon, Sally Ride was the first American woman in space, but back on Earth things were complicated in her personal life. This new documentary, from National Geographic and Emmy-winning documentarian Cristina Costantini, reveals the sacrifices that Sally Ride made in her life, with testimony from her life-partner of 27 years, Tam O’Shaughnessy.

Stream Sally on Disney Plus and Hulu in the US starting June 17; streaming on Disney Plus in the UK as of June 17.

Titan: The OceanGate Disaster (Netflix)

Another documentary to watch on streaming in June is Titan: The OceanGate Disaster. Most will remember the tragic story of the implosion of an OceanGate submersible, the Titan, that killed all five passengers in 2023. This documentary will look at what went wrong to lead to such an outcome. This is one of two documentaries about the Titan incident, with the other being Implosion: The Titanic Sub Disaster.

Straw (Netflix)

The prolific Tyler Perry has a brand new project as the director and writer of Straw, a thriller starring Taraji P. Henson as a single mother who is pushed to the brink, leading her to a shocking act of desperation. Henson is joined in the cast by Teyana Taylor, Sherri Shepherd, Rockmund Dunbar, Glynn Turman and, in one of his most profile roles in years, Sinbad.

Stream Straw on Netflix starting June 6.

From the moment Passionflix announced that they would be bringing J.R. Ward's bestselling Black Dagger Brotherhood to life, fans started buzzing about casting and seeing their beloved characters come to life. At long last, it's time to meet the Brotherhood in person, and let's just say there's a lot to sink your teeth into. Literally.

The series, which follows a group of highly skilled vampire warriors, has been a BookTok sensation. There are over 20 books in the series, dating back to the 2005 debut of Dark Lover.

Netflix has added Dear Hongrang, a big-budget mystery melodrama from South Korea based on a popular book.

Set in the 1392-1910 Joseon Dynasty, the story follows Hongrang (Lee Jae-wook), the long-lost son of a powerful Joseon merchant, who emerges from the shadows with hidden secrets.

Netflix teases: “As he makes his unexpected return, having vanished in childhood, the narrative promises a whirlwind of emotions, weaving romance and suspense."

Cho Bo-ah plays Jae-yi, a woman torn between doubt and love for her enigmatic step-brother, Hongrang. "Their fates become inextricably linked in a tale that masterfully explores love, friendship, and destiny," tease the makers.

But is Hongrang really who he says he is? Lee Jae-wook, speaking at a press conference, said: "The viewers will have doubts about whether Hongrang is real or not." So there's a mixture of love and suspicion between the pair.

Dear Hongrang is billed as a "spellbinding experience," and, judging by the trailer (above), it certainly looks stunning.

It is based on Jing Da-hye’s novel "Tandem: Swallowing Gold". Swallowing Gold refers to an ancient capital punishment which saw the poor victim having to swallow gold.

The series is directed by Kim Hong-sun, whose other Netflix projects include Money Heist: Joint Economic Area and The Guest.

“This project is based on a novel. I read the book in one sitting. People often talk about fate, but the characters in the story have no intention of following their destined paths. The strength of the story is what led me to take on the role of director,” said Kim Hong-sun at a press conference.

He added: “I felt a sense of duty to showcase the beauty of Korea, so I tried to stay as historically accurate as possible."

Is Dear Hongrang worth a watch?

If you’re into your period dramas and love a good romance, then this could be for you. You're going to need subtitles, assuming you can’t speak Korean, so that might put off some viewers. We have to say, rarely have we seen a series that looks quite so visually stunning and that lends the series an appeal. Also, if you generally enjoy South Korean productions, then this also looks like one to add to your watchlist.

What started out as popular classic novel from Judy Blume in 1975, has arguably become the best new show of 2025 from Mara Brock Akil — Forever.

The new coming-of-age drama storming Netflix, wowing critics (it has a “Certified Fresh” score of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes) and has me already considering watching it again, follows the journey of Justin Edwards (Michael Cooper Jr.) and Keisha Clark (Lovie Simone). The two high school students not only navigate a complicated romance, but also the growing pains that come with entering adulthood. Thankfully, the powers that be at Netflix recognized a good thing when they saw it, as Forever season 2 has officially been greenlit and is in the works.

Now, Netflix hasn’t announced a timeframe for when they’ll drop season 2 episodes. Looking at other popular dramas, between Sweet Magnolias season 3 and season 4, there was about a year and a half lapse, and that time lapse also occurs between Ginny & Georgia season 2 and the upcoming season 3. So if I had to guess, Forever season 2 could follow suit, and we may not get the rollout of new episodes until late fall/early winter of 2026. But again, Netflix hasn’t shared an official season 2 release date.

With all that being said, my wheels are already going, thinking about what Forever fans could possibly see in a new season. When season 1 wrapped, Keisha was headed off to Howard University to run track, and Justin was pursuing his music dreams, even selling one of his beats. The duo was well on their way in their individual journeys into adulthood.

However, the biggest takeaway from the final episode was the year. It was 2019, and in real life, that’s the dawn before COVID-19 and the Black Lives Matter movement in the US. So there are plenty of possible directions Forever writers could go.

Keisha spirals due to a cancelled track season

By the time the outdoor track season rolls around for Keisha during her freshman year at Howard University, it will be the spring of 2020. Unfortunately, as most of us can recall, the world shut down in the spring of 2020 due to the pandemic, and as CBS News reports, the NCAA track season was cancelled. So Keisha may return home early feeling dejected, in a funk and in need of cheering up with her childhood dreams shattered (well, stalled). Enter Justin. Perhaps Justin will be up to the task of bringing a smile to his ex’s face.

The Edwards family hits hard financial times

Also towards the end of season 1, Justin’s father, Eric (Wood Harris), was celebrating the news that he was expanding his restaurant to five possible new locations. While that left the family hopeful for the future at the time, again, COVID-19 shut the world down in the spring of 2020. Many restaurants were greatly impacted by the virus and closures, and some of the businesses didn’t survive. So there’s a chance Eric doesn’t expand his restaurant empire after all, and in fact, struggles to keep even one up and running to outlast the pandemic. Either way, the Edwards family could be looking forward to financial strain and hardship. I just hope Eric and Dawn’s (Karen Pittman) marriage isn’t too greatly impacted by any strain, as I love watching them as a happy couple.

Keisha and Justin throw themselves into the Black Lives Matter movement

With the Black Lives Matter movement kicking off in 2020, it’s easy to picture Keisha and Justin protesting in the summer, much to the chagrin of Dawn. Justin’s mom was already concerned about him being a victim of police brutality or him leaving the house one day and not returning, so I suspect Dawn won’t be thrilled with Justin protesting, fearing for his safety. However, Dawn’s concerns likely would go unheard, as Justin is an adult and feels empowered now that he’s pursuing his own dreams and not those of his parents.

Keisha and Justin have a rocky road to a reunion

I know I already mentioned Justin being there for Keisha after a cancelled track season, but I think it will be in a friend capacity. I suspect they’ll be dating other people, as people their age probably should. They’ll explore what’s out there, as best they can. However, while one of them finds themselves in an actual relationship, the other may find the dating world doesn’t have much to offer and realize that #Kustin (or #Jeisha) belongs together. I don’t know how long it will take for Justin and Keisha to get on the same page romantically, but I imagine they will eventually.

For now, Forever season 1 can be streamed on Netflix

The Netflix top 10 list that appears on the homepage is a nice barometer to see what is popular on the streamer, but it is not always the best indicator of the best the streamer has to offer (check out WTW’s best Netflix movies for our opinion on that subject).

A current example is Bad Influence, which has been a pretty consistent resident of the Netflix top 10 since it premiered on the streamer on May 9.

Bad Influence is a Spanish-language movie (title in Spanish is Mala influencia) that blends teen romance and thriller genre qualities. It centers on an ex-con who is hired to protect a wealthy heiress from a stalker — but as they grow closer, their chemistry becomes harder to resist. Alberto Olmo and Eléa Rochera star as the central couple in the movie directed by Chloé Wallace.

While I can see why that may be an intriguing viewing option, those who have seen it aren't too high on it. The few critics that have reviewed the movie on Rotten Tomatoes all gave it a “Rotten” score. General viewers haven’t been much kinder, as indicated by the movies 1.7 average star rating by users on Letterboxd.

But if you’re in the mood for a romance story to watch on Netflix, we’ve got three suggestions that may be a better pick than Bad Influence:

Heart Eyes (2025)

If part of the reason you were considering Bad Influence was because of its thriller qualities, Netflix has another 2025 new movie that can better scratch that itch. Heart Eyes is a Valentine’s Day-themed horror/thriller about the titular Heart Eyes Killer, who goes after young couples on the romantic holiday. This time he has his eyes set on the pairing of Mason Gooding and Olivia Holt. Heart Eyes was a bit of an underrated gem earlier this year, as it’s “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes. One of our writers absolutely “loved it to bits.”

Past Lives (2023)

I always like to see when Netflix subscribers give foreign language movies a shot, as it’s great to see what the entire world of cinema has to offer. So to provide an alternative to the Spanish movie Bad Influence, I offer Past Lives. While this is an American-made movie (distributed by A24), a large majority of Past Lives’ dialogue is in Korean, so you get that international vibe. And as I’ve expressed in both my Past Lives review and more recently, Past Lives is probably one of the best movie romances of this century, one that will rip your heart out (in the best possible way).

Pride & Prejudice (2005)

You only have a little bit of time left to watch Pride & Prejudice on Netflix, as the adaptation of the Jane Austen classic is leaving the streaming service at the end of May. Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfayden star as the timeless Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy in Joe Wright’s gorgeous period drama. This will satisfy the different circumstances of the characters that fall in love that Bad Influence offers, with Mr. Darcy coming from money and Elizabeth from a more humble upbringing (no criminal record that we’re aware of).

The Love on the Danube trilogy comes to an end with Love on the Danube: Kissing Stars, the story of a publicist and a celebrity who connect on a cruise. The movie is making its premiere on Hallmark Channel after premiering on Hallmark Plus last year.

The other two movies in the series are Love on the Danube: Love Song and Love on the Danube: Royal Getaway. The trilogy is part of Hallmark Channel's May for Moms programming lineup that also includes two all-new original movies, Love in the Clouds and the Kentucky Derby-inspired Hats Off to Love.

Without question, Netflix’s Forever stole my heart at first sight. I power-binged through the eight episodes, only coming up for air to eat and do all the things humans do. I couldn’t help it, as Forever genuinely is the best new series I’ve seen this year, with fantastic storylines, superb acting and directing and a fantastic music track listing. Heck, I’m not the only one who has fallen in love with the series, evident by the Rotten Tomatoes “Certified Fresh” score.

Having said all of that, naturally, a big question arises about the future of the show. Will series creator Mara Brock Akil once again create a super team to bring forth more episodes, showcasing the stories of Keisha Clark (Lovie Simone), Justin Edwards (Michael Cooper Jr.) and their families? Well, here’s what we know about Forever season 2.

Will there be a Forever season 2?

Thankfully, Netflix has wasted no time in renewing the series for another season. As shown in the Instagram clip below, posted on May 14, the cast announces that a second is officially on the way.

Considering the coming-of-age drama has been ranking in the top 10 TV shows on Netflix since its release (ranking second behind The Four Seasons as of May 12), I’d venture to say a renewal was a fantastic idea.

Possible Forever season 2 storylines

I’ll be offering up some SPOILERS here, so if you don’t want to ruin your viewing experience, this is your opportunity to turn away now (but do come back later).

When the season wrapped, Keisha was headed off to Howard to run track, and Justin was hotly in the pursuit of his music dreams, even selling one of his beats. It looked like the two were well on their way in their individual journeys into adulthood.

However, it wasn’t lost on me that the season finale ended with the show heading into the fall of 2019. In real life, that was the dawn before COVID-19. So I can imagine Keisha’s first year in Washington, D.C., is going to be cut short come March 2020, when the world shuts down. As CBS News reports, the NCAA track season was cancelled. So Keisha may return home feeling dejected, in a funk and in need of cheering up. Enter Justin, perhaps the man for the job.

Although, I imagine Justin may need some cheering up himself. While music was still being created during the pandemic, the restaurant business took a hit. By the end of Forever's first season, Justin’s dad was in the midst of expanding his restaurant to five possible new locations. Sadly, it’s not hard to picture Justin’s dad hitting a rough patch and the family overall looking at some financial setbacks.

Oh, and I can’t forget the social justice component likely to kick in with a possible season 2. With the Black Lives Matter movement kicking off in 2020, Keisha and Justin may find themselves protesting, and I have a feeling Justin’s mom, in particular, will have concerns about the safety of her child, similar to the ones she had in season one.

For now, Forever can be streamed on Netflix.

Over the last few weeks, I’ve really been wowed by the TV and film industry, which I can’t help but applaud Hollywood for. First, Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan’s Sinners took my breath away in theaters, and most recently, Netflix hijacked my weekend with their new drama series, Forever.

I literally sat and watched all eight episodes of season one back-to-back, enthralled by the mastery of super producer Mara Brock Akil turning Judy Blume’s classic into an instant hit. I mean, I even opted out of some plans to stay planted to see how everything would turn out.

For those of you who are unfortunately out of the loop, Forever is based on Blume’s novel of the same name, showcasing what it means to be young, in love and trying to figure out who you are in this world and what kind of adult you’ll become. Here is the official synopsis:

“A reimagination of the 1975 novel, the romantic drama Forever follows the epic love story of two Black teens exploring their identities through the awkward and moving journey of being each other’s capital-F Firsts…The young athletes fall hard for each other as they learn just how deeply their first love will affect the rest of their lives, all set against the sun-drenched backdrop of 2018 Los Angeles.”

Now let's talk about everything I loved about Forever. Right off the bat, Akil and her writing team offered up some superb work. The pacing and fluidity between the scenes ensured I was never bored and always captivated.

It was incredibly brilliant to not only tell the love story between main characters Justin (Michael Cooper Jr.) and Keisha (Lovie Simone) while highlighting their individual journeys into adulthood, but I’m a huge fan of the parental perspective included in all of this.

It makes for a relatable experience as a millennial viewer, knowing what it’s like to be a teen growing up in an age of social media, but now being a full-fledged adult wanting to protect younger family members from the experiences one must actually face as a part of growing up. Oh, and to add, all the culturally relevant aspects of the narrative that speak to the Black experience in America were top tier.

There’s also the casting choices and phenomenal performances of each actor. Cooper and Simone may not have been names that I admittedly could easily recall before Forever, but now they’ll be impossible to forget. They were fantastic and believable in their respective roles. Each high and low of the emotions they portrayed had me hooked, and actually put me on a bit of an emotional rollercoaster. I connected with the portrayals in such a way that I was literally rooting for them to win, furious when they made the wrong decisions and “devastated” (just give me a moment to be dramatic) when they were in pain.

And while they were the leads, I also have to applaud Wood Harris and Karen Pittman as Justin’s parents. Their romance may not have been the focal point of the show, but they definitely pull your attention. They have amazing onscreen chemistry, and make those people who identify as single and ready to mingle remember what they are potentially missing out on.

Now the music of a series may never be something you readily think about in what makes a show great, but darn it if Forever won’t make you consider this going forward. The curated list of songs for each episode perfectly punctuated every scene and instantly drew my mind to the exact place that writers and directors were obviously trying to get me to go. And speaking of directors, Akil, Regina King (One Night in Miami…), Anthony Hemingway (Genius: Aretha) and Thembi Banks (Survival of the Thickest) collectively banded together to provide some of the most cohesive directing I’ve seen for a series to date.

All in all, if you haven’t started watching Forever, trust me, you’re doing yourself a grave disservice. Like I said, it’s the best new show I’ve seen in 2025, and yes, I have seen Sterling K. Brown’s Paradise. Additionally, as far as my complaint about the series, that really boils down to my desire to have more episodes. By the way, Forever season 2 is officially in the works.

I am stoked to watch Materialists, the latest movie from Past Lives’ director Celine Song and starring Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans; it’s my top-ranked must-watch indie movie this summer.

So I was excited to check out a new trailer (below) that premiered online on May 8. But that excitement turned to confusion pretty quickly when I heard an omnipotent voice-over narration being used.

If you’re not quite sure what I mean, do you remember the “In a world…” trend that movie trailers used to have where a voice not connected to the characters in the movie would describe the setting, plot, characters and even some of the themes of the movie? The narration in the Materialists trailer even starts out with “In the world…”

Now, this does not dampen my excitement for Materialists, which sees Johnson play a young matchmaker in New York City who herself has proven unlucky in love. But I couldn’t help but cringe a bit when watching the new trailer and wonder why A24, a movie studio usually aiming to be on the cutting edge of marketing, would opt for this odd choice.

My fellow millennials and older moviegoers will recall how voice over narration in trailers was more common in the 1990s, even making a celebrity out of Don LaFontaine, whose reading of “In a world” became iconic, lending his voice to more than 5,000 movie trailers according to Wikipedia. But eventually the trend faded out and honestly, I can’t recall many trailers that have used it in the last 10-15 years (I’m not including voice overs from characters in the movie used in trailers).

Usually in storytelling, you want to lean on the idea of show, don’t tell, so this Materialists trailer relying on a voice-over to give some background on Johnson’s character, Lucy, and a brief summary on some of the themes the movie is going to focus on is weird. That’s especially true considering Song proved herself to be able to beautifully write and film a powerful love story in Past Lives. Certainly, the powers that be didn’t feel the need to include a voice over in the first Materialists trailer.

I had two thoughts on why the Materialists went in this direction. First, perhaps they were thinking that adding the voice over could make it more accessible for those who rely on audio descriptions. The voice over could be providing additional context that may be harder to pick up for those who aren’t able to see the images as clearly; and it certainly helps when the trailer features text like its release window and talent involved.

The other thought was maybe Materialists wanted to invoke that nostalgic feeling. The movie is a romantic comedy, a genre that had its heyday back in the 1990s and early 2000s, but hasn’t been as successful at the box office in recent years. Adding to the nostalgic factor is that Madonna’s “Material Girl” is played in the trailer.

Whatever the reasoning, I’m personally not a huge fan of it. Maybe others do and this could be the start of a new surge in trailer voice overs. But ultimately, I still can't wait to see Materialists when it releases exclusively in movie theaters on June 13.

Judy Blume has written some of the most memorable young adult books in the modern era, and her 1975 seminal classic, Forever, is available to stream on Netflix now.

Here's the official logline for the movie: "Judy Blume's groundbreaking 1975 novel, Forever, is being reimagined for a new generation by Mara Brock Akil. It’s an epic love story of two Black teens exploring romance and their identities through the awkward journey of being each other’s firsts, set in Los Angeles, 2018."

Blume, who penned such classics as Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret and Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, told Tudum, how delighted she was to see her book translated for a Netflix series. "I'm thrilled that Mara has chosen to tell this story through her own lens. It is gratifying to know that, 50 years after its release, the love story at the core of Forever is still resonating with audiences."

Though five decades have passed since Blume published "Forever", the story is as important now as it was back then. "All the questions we have to sort through — the first time you have sex, your first kiss, the first time you say ‘I love you’ — it resonated then, and it resonates now," Brock Akil said. In thinking of a modern update, it was important to capture the powerful force of first love and the way the feeling stays with you for years and years.

In penning her adaptation, Brock Akil knew that Keisha and Justin's love story needed to be set in a place where their love could grow, ultimately deciding on LA. "What better metaphor for this love story than what LA represents, for not only me, but for a lot of people,” she told Tudum. "You’re looking for a place to follow your dreams, and love is a part of that."

Forever stars Lovie Simone as Keisha Clark and Michael Cooper Jr. as Justin Edwards. The series also features Karen Pittman, Wood Harris, Xosha Roquemore, Marvin Lawrence Winans III and Barry Shabaka Henley.

Forever is available to stream now on Netflix.

I’m not afraid to admit that I have a romantic side. A great love story on the big screen can be one of the most emotionally powerful viewing experiences.

I was reminded of that back in 2023 when I saw Past Lives and was immediately struck by the relationship at its center and one of the more incredible endings I’ve seen in a movie in some time. Because of that, I think Past Lives has to be considered for the best movie love stories of the 21st century.

You don’t have to just take my word for it though, because Past Lives has been added to Netflix in the US today [Thursday, May 1], so anyone with a subscription can watch the movie and judge for themselves.

The debut movie from Celine Song, Past Lives is a decade-spanning story about the relationship between Nora (Greta Lee) and Hae Sung (Teo Yoo). After bonding as children in Korea, Nora and Hae Sung lose touch after Nora’s family moves to North America. However, they reconnect as adults and eventually meet up in person in New York City, where Nora lives with her husband (John Magaro). But are Nora and Hae Sung connected by something more?

My Past Lives review gave the movie five-stars and named it my No. 3 best movie of 2023 (only behind Oppenheimer and The Holdovers, which is no ding in my books), it is “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes and it was nominated for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars. Those are all great qualifications, but other movies have similar credentials, and I’m not making grand statements about them being landmarks of 21st century cinema. But there’s something more to it, and it honestly may come down to the Past Lives ending.

I won’t spoil it for anyone who hasn’t seen the movie, but what I will say is that it features an incredible tracking shot and an amazing performance by Lee that may require tissues if you are someone who is known to cry during movies as it is utterly, achingly beautiful.

There are only a couple of other movies where the love story is the central thing released in the last 25 years that I’d in the same league as Past Lives. One is Wong Kar-Wai’s brilliant In the Mood for Love about neighbors who bond while their partners have extramarital affairs (currently streaming on Max in the US, on-demand in the UK), and the other is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, the Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet movie about a couple trying erase each other from their memories, written by Charlie Kaufman and directed by Michel Gondry (also streaming on Max in the US and on-demand in the UK).

Perhaps the quality that I admire most about all of these movies is that they aren’t simple love stories. Those can be their own fun watches, but Past Lives, like the other movies mentioned above, look at different complexities of love. In the case of Past Lives, the idea of fate, or “in yun,” the Korean word used in the movie. It is those mixes of larger ideas with a great script, acting and directing that make Past Lives something truly special.

And there’s a chance that Celine Song could have something else special for us soon, as she has a new movie coming out this summer, Materialists, starring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal.

Materialists will play exclusively in movie theaters starting June 13, but you can watch Past Lives now on Netflix in the US (it's available to rent from various sites in the UK).

After nine eventful episodes spent getting to know various residents of the scenic small town that is Ransom, Texas, we've come to the end — of Ransom Canyon season 1, that is.

Right now, Netflix hasn't officially announced a Ransom canyon season 2 pick-up, but there are eight novels in the Jodi Thomas book series on which the show is based, so there's plenty of source material that could be adapted into a sophomore season.

And given the shocking events of the Ransom Canyon season 1 ending, there are still plenty of questions we'd want answered. Will Quinn (Minka Kelly) actually head off to New York to play with the Philharmonic, leaving Staten (Josh Duhamel) behind after their romance only just started? What will happen between Yancy (Jack Schumacher) and Ellie (Marianly Tejada), especially after that arrival of a surprise spouse. And will Lucas (Garrett Wareing) stay in Ransom with high school love Lauren (Lizzy Greene) or leave it all behind for one of his prestigious Ivy League acceptances?

But before we get ahead of ourselves, here’s everything that went down in Ransom Canyon episode 10, entitled “Maybe It’s Time Yancy Grey Dies Too."

Justice served

The episode begins with a quick catch-up with some of the main characters. We see Lauren in a sling for her injured shoulder, effectively ending her cheerleading career. Blaming Lucas — who got Kit (Casey W. Johnson) to sign those emancipation papers, protecting him from being sent to foster care — for distracting her during the pep rally and causing her to fall, Lauren won't talk to him.

Lucas confronts her at the memorial for Cap (James Brolin) and promises her that no matter if there's no UT and no scholarship in her future, he's going to be there for her. Though Lauren worries that things are getting too serious between them, Lucas gets a push from Reid (Andrew Liner) of all people to declare his love for her, which he does from the dance-hall stage in front of a whole party of people. They reconcile and kiss to cheers.

Lauren also reconciles herself with the fact that her mother Margaret (Sarah Minnich) was the one who caused Randall's car crash, killing the teen boy. She tells her dad (Philip Winchester) they can't let Kit keep sitting in that cell for a crime he didn't commit. Taking that to heart, Sheriff Dan goes to Austin with back-up to arrest his wife Margaret, with tears in his eyes as he does it.

Returning home, Dan and his daughter mourn the arrest of Margaret, while a newly freed Kit joyfully reunites with Lucas at the trailer home. However, just moments prior, Lucas was looking through all of his college letters — is he not going to remain in Texas after all?

Plans made

At the dance hall, Quinn gets a concerning piece of mail from Austin Water & Power's lawyers — they're threatening legal action if they don't recoup the early-stage investment they gave her, which means she owes them a whopping $80,000. Staten offers to lend her the money, but she says she'll find a way to pay it herself.

Given that things are moving smoothly with Staten, Quinn finally sets a meet-up with Davis to break things off. He handles it surprisingly well — so much so that she wishes he'd be a jerk about it to make things easier. He tells her he's always known that her heart really lies with Staten. He wants her to be happy and asks if she's still planning on going to New York for the Philharmonic seat? She hasn't decided. Before he leaves, he asks if it was ever real between them — she tearfully assures him that it was.

After an uncomfortable conversation with Sam (Brett Cullen), Quinn realizes she'd rather see Gracie's close than keep playing Austin Water & Power's game. She tells Staten maybe it's time to move on, and comes clean about the NY Phil offer, which would be a six-month gig. Unsurprisingly, State is upset, thinking Quinn just wanted a little fling before she planned to leave him high and dry for the big city. She cuts the conversation short and says she just wants to go to bed.

However, later at the dance hall, Quinn tells Ellie she's going to go to New York and take the Philharmonic gig to get the money they need to keep Gracie's open. She also wants Ellie to officially come on as her business partner.

They throw a big dance party at the Gracie's that night to celebrate, with everybody in attendance, including both Davis and Staten. Still smarting over his dumping, Davis says harsh words about Staten's late wife, prompting the latter to punch him — which is just what Davis and Sam want, to use the physical altercation as proof that Staten is unfit to be the trustee of Double K ranch.

Quinn is furious that he would get violent in her bar — she says all she ever wanted was him, but all he ever wants is his own pain. He exits, leaving behind the straw bracelet that Quinn had given him.

The last we see of Quinn, she is contemplative at her piano, while Staten rides his horse alone above the canyon.

Promises broken

Ellie is very much in mourning following Cap's death. Meanwhile, Yancy has been preparing for the memorial that they're hosting in Cap's honor at the Fuller ranch, which he will be selling to Austin Water & Power like his grandfather wanted, though he plans to give every cent of the sale to Ellie and Ruth. However, at the memorial, Ellie reveals she doesn't want him to sell the land; she wants him to do the right thing.

After an emotional conversation with Staten at the memorial — during which Staten reveals to Yancy that Cap spent years looking for him and his mother and wanted to make things right between them all but never got the chance — Yancy tells Ellie he's not going to sell the place after all. Just like Cap, he's going to run the ranch until they bury him on it.

He also surprises her by proposing, having gotten Ruth's engagement ring to give to her. She's ambivalent because it's so soon in their relationship but he's asking her to take the leap — he has the chapel, the priest and the suit ready to go, she just has to meet him there that night.

At the dance hall, she tells a jealous Kai (Justin Johnson Cortez) she's going to marry Yancy. White gown in hand, she's planning to leave and meet Yancy at the chapel when she's stopped by a woman who is looking for him. Who is she, Ellie asks. Only Yancy's wife!

We're officially at the penultimate edition of Ransom Canyon. It's certainly been a busy season thus far, with family secrets, romantic entanglements, business schemes and more — and it's looking like Ransom Canyon episode 9 ("About Forever") is no exception.

Yancy (Jack Schumacher) has to deal with the fallout of his identity reveal to Cap (James Brolin); Quinn (Minka Kelly) is faced with choosing between her feelings for Staten (Duhamel) and a tempting offer elsewhere; and the case against Kit (Casey W. Johnson) takes a shocking new turn.

All's fair in love

After last episode's cliffhanger, we quickly pick up with Quinn... who has again spent the evening with Staten. The two are basically in honeymoon mode, however Staten urges her to break up with Davis (Eoin Macken) so they can be together for real. She wants to be kind though, knowing they're doing a crappy thing being together behind Davis's back. Before they part, they both tie some straw around their wrists as a sort of promise bracelet.

Quinn does try to break things off with Davis, but when he unexpectedly shows up to their date with Reid (Andrew Liner) in tow, she couches it for later. However, Davis does take note of the odd bracelet around her wrist.

Later, Quinn gets an unexpected surprise at the dance hall: it's Katherine Bullock (Kate Burton) from the New York Philharmonic, dropping in to follow up on that piano audition. Quinn gets emotional taking about why she's returned to Ransom from New York — and how quickly she's fallen in love with Staten again — but Kate reminds her she needs to live for herself. Kate has Quinn perform the audition piece right there in the dance hall and tells her the orchestra seat is hers if she wants it.

And war, too

Back at Double K, Staten gets an unwelcome visit from his father Sam (Brett Cullen), who is angry that Davis is trying to poach their biggest buyers right from under their nose after Staten has raised the ranch's prices to go solar. It's a six-figure loss, but Staten argues his grandfather made him the trustee, not Sam, so it's his decision how the place operates. However, Sam warns him that a trustee can be unseated, and all of this can easily go to Austin Water & Power.

Staten heads over to the Collins ranch to confront Davis about taking his accounts. He also reminds his rival what he'll be losing if he sells all of his family's land to Austin Water & Power. They've made it too easy for the bureaucrats to pit their ranches against each other, he says, and instead of continuing their feud, he suggests they join forces. Both of their legacies benefit Reid, but he won't be able to carry that family tradition unless they lay down their swords. It's a convincing speech as Davis begrudgingly accepts.

However, Davis walks back on that kumbaya collaboration when he spots a straw bracelet around Staten's wrist, matching the one Quinn was wearing. In retaliation, he takes out Staten's biggest buyer Billy (Dan Reynolds, the lead singer of Imagine Dragons and the real-life partner of Minka Kelly) and tries to confirm a deal with him during that night's pep rally.

Except Staten catches wind of this and shows up to the pep rally for some cross-bargaining. Davis has a better offer, Billy claims, and Staten is about to announce the reality of Davis's financial situation — what Quinn has spilled about earlier — but he remembers the promise he made her. That doesn't stop him from declaring war against Davis.

Crack the case

The DA is ready to file charges against Kit, but Sheriff Dan (Philip Winchester) is worried Lucas was right, that the Russell boy is simply covering for someone else.

Speaking of Lucas, he has his own issues. For one, he gets into a fight with Lauren (Lizzy Greene) because she's still spiraling over the cheer clinic snafu, plus Child Protective Services are looking for him. However, he gets some help with the latter courtesy of Reid, who asks Davis to call in a favor and have emancipation papers drawn up for Lucas so he won't have to worry about being put in foster care if Kit does end up having to serve time. "It's what Randall would've done," Reid movingly tells him.

As for the business with Lauren, Lucas apologizes for being harsh to her about her situation and they make up. The young couple even gets the blessing of Lauren's dad, who also tells her that he pulled some strings with the UT reps to get her a second chance at auditioning. However, while performing during the pep rally, Lauren takes a hard fall off the human pyramid and badly injures her shoulder — is her cheerleading future officially over?

That's not the only shock for the Brigman family. The sheriff has a realization while going through Kit's case — he goes to talk to Lauren's mom Margaret (Sarah Minnich), who we find out had a romantic fling with Kit two years ago. He has a gut feeling she was with him the night that Randall died and tells her he needs to know what happened.

Via flashback, we see it was actually Margaret who was behind the wheel that night, and under the influence. She's shaken after the crash and Kit, after confirming that Randall has died in the accident, tells her he will take care of disposing of the evidence. Dan is left stunned, and Margaret is panicked about what he's gonna do.

Later, she shows up to the Brigman residence and begs him not to arrest her, but Lauren overhears. Is her dad going to send her mom to jail?

Pour one out

Since getting kicked out of Cap's, Yancy has been staying with Ellie (Marianly Tejada), giving her an envelope of cash to earn his keep. She assures him he can stay as long as he wants — she just doesn't want him to run away like he usually does. However, after a heated conversation with Davis, in which the latter suggests that Eillie would be much better off without him, Yancy hits the road.

He eventually returns, though, and while Ellie is pissed he was planning to take off without even leaving a note behind, he surprises her by telling her that he loves her. All is forgiven, but Ellie also surprises him with the news that Cap stood her up on their lunch date. Yancy gets worried when he hears that because Cap wouldn't do that to Ellie, so they take off in the car to find him.

Cap had gone out on horseback through the countryside, but when his horse returns that night sans rider, Yancy takes off for the hills to find his grandfather. Hours later, he finds Cap peacefully sitting beneath a tree — however Yancy tearfully realizes that the old man is dead. Proving that Cap did, in fact, care about him, the elder Fuller died clutching that photo booth strip of Yancy's parents. The younger Fuller sits with him and weeps. Rest well, Cap.

The storm may have officially settled in Ransom, but there's still plenty of melodrama surging through Ransom Canyon episode 8.

In "The Bad Seed", a suspect finally gets carted off in handcuffs for the car accident that tragically killed Staten's (Josh Duhamel) son. There's also a healthy amount of family dysfunction on display — not only between Davis (Eoin Macken), Paula Jo (Meta Golding) and Reid (Andrew Liner), but also Yancy (Jack Schumacher) and his secret grandpa Cap (James Brolin) — as well as romantic to-dos between Staten and Quinn (Minka Kelly).

Doing time

Lucas (Garrett Wareing) has quite a rude wake-up call. After Reid's tip-off, the Ransom sheriff's department swarms into the trailer home to arrest Kit (Casey W. Johnson) for his involvement in Randall's car accident.

Lucas upset not only because Staten fired him due to the arrest — which will make it impossible for him to make bail for his brother — but also because Kit isn't putting up much of a fight in his own defense. (When the sheriff interrogates the older Russell about what happened that night, Kit agrees to a full confession to have his sentence decreased, but Sheriff Dan still feels like he's withholding key details from him.) Adding extra worry is the fact that Lucas, who is still a minor, will be put into the foster care system if Kit doesn't get out of jail.

Lucas proposes to Kit that he'll take the fall for him. He's younger, his record is clean; a jail sentence will be less of a life-ruining thing for him. But Kit wants Lucas to get out of that small town and make a life for himself.

Things slightly look up for Lucas when he gets more insights from Reid (Andrew Liner) into what happened with that blue Ford pick-up. He and Tim (Niko Guardado) got into some trouble over the summer when they bought molly off a guy in Bandera, who then tried to shake them down. Kit was there that night and got the boys out of the jam — they owed him a big one.

So when a couple of months had gone by and Kit called them to take a Ford truck out to Bandera to scrub the VIN and then dispose of it, that's what they did. Reid didn't know that was the truck until Sheriff Dan had told him later. He wishes things were different, he assures Lucas, who gives him a beer as an olive branch.

Daddy issues

Things have settled down post-storm for Yancy and Ellie (Marianly Tejada), but the latter still demands he tell Cap the truth about who he really is. If Cap doesn't accept him as family, at least he can walk away with his head high, knowing he did the right thing, Ellie says.

Yancy plans to tell Cap, even informing Davis he is prepared to reveal his true identity (though not Davis' involvement in the ranch scheme). However, when he tries to come clean to Cap when they're fishing by the creek, he chokes. He thought not having a home or family was the worst that could happen to him, but losing the family he has now is harder. Ellie assures him his grandfather is just like him: gruff on the outside and soft on the inside.

However, before Yancy can tell Cap the truth, a scheming Davis does it for him. When Yancy returns to the Fuller ranch that evening, Cap is waiting for him with a gun and some harsh words — he says he'd rather sell the place to Austin Water & Power than to a liar like him. "You mean nothing to me," he growls. Yancy leaves heartbroken.

Good cheer

While Lucas is busy dealing with all of Kit's legal troubles, his girlfriend Lauren (Lizzy Greene) is trying to figure out a way to get to that UT cheer clinic. After getting injured in the storm last episode, Sheriff Dan refuses to sign her permission slip for the tryouts. However, even with a bum ankle, she manages to get to Austin to audition with her cheer buddies.

However, when it's her turn, she ends up royally messing up her flip. She's already upset when her estranged mother Margaret (Sarah Minnich) surprisingly shows up to the clinic — turns out it was Margaret who signed Lauren's permission slip.

Though mom assures Lauren she's recently gotten a job at a dress shop and is steadfastly attending AA meetings, her appearance just serves as a reminder that Lauren's audition failure just means she'll be stuck in small-town Texas like her mom was.

All too well

Good news for Lucas: after Jake (Tatanka Means) convinces Staten he shouldn't have fired the boy for what his brother did, Staten rehires the young Russell, who has some good ideas about bringing in solar power to modernize the ranch.

While they're out planning in the fields, they catch sight of Austin Water & Power reps checking the salinity of Staten's wells. And just like Paula Jo (Meta Golding) plotted, the water samples come back brackish. When Staten is informed about the grandfathered well clause that's on the agenda for the upcoming town meeting, he realizes his water has been spiked and Paula Jo is trying to force him into selling the place. Lucas, however, has an idea.

Back at the Collins residence, Paula Jo is popping bottles of champagne in celebration that her plan worked, when Reid comes in asking about why the Collins and Kirkland clans hate each other so much. It's a generational feud, she explains, with each side thinking they're the hero of the story. He's heard the men's hero stories, she tells him — it's time he's heard hers.

Later, at the town meeting, Paula Jo, Davis and the rest are ready to vote on the well clause. However, Reid interrupts saying he wants to make a statement — during which he plays a taped confession of his mother admitting to spiking the salinity of the Double K wells, a double-crossing set up by Lucas. Paula Jo is left humiliated, and Davis is furious at his son: "You just let a damn Kirkland work you over." But Staten is proud of his nephew and tells him it was the right thing to do.

Back at home, Paula Jo is weeping in the shower. Davis comes in to comfort her and, after a moment's hesitation about his relationship with Quinn, gives into his ex.

Getting real

Speaking of Quinn, she's had a lot of distractions lately — in the form of Staten and Davis — which has led her to drop the ball work-wise. Ellie has been hiring staff, doing repairs and dealing with storm insurance without her. hen Quinn criticizes her for overstepping, Ellie snaps that if Quinn didn't want her to step up post-tornado, she should have been there herself. Quinn tearfully apologizes and Ellie tells her to take the day off to get her head straight.

But these damn cowboys won't let her. When Staten wants to talk about what happened between them, Quinn immediately rushes to the conclusion he regrets sleeping with her; she says it was just a blip for the both of them. He, however, proclaims she knows exactly how he feels about her, and she can keep pretending all she wants, but they did happen.

When Davis drops by the dance hall, he acknowledges she's been standoffish the past few days, thinking it's because of Paula Jo's pipeline plan and her threatening the Gracie's liquor license. He assures her he's had no hand in Paula Jo's schemes, but Quinn still says she needs some time and space to think.

After all that thinking, the final moments of the episode sees Quinn grab her keys and drive to... where exactly? We see a door being opened and her offering the owner a loving greeting, but who is she visiting?

A dangerous tornado whirls into town in Ransom Canyon episode 7, “By the Grace of God” — and there’s plenty of drama and surprises blowing in alongside the stormy weather.

With the residents of Ransom forced to shelter in place during the emergency, we see several unexpected tornado twosomes forming… including some much-anticipated movement in the will-they-won’t-they connection between Staten (Josh Duhamel) and Quinn (Minka Kelly). We also get some shocking new details about Randall’s car accident — and who else might’ve been out there that night.

Reid’s regrets

We kick off the episode with Reid (Andrew Liner) swimming at home, intercut with flashbacks of that Ford pick-up being rescued from the bottom of a lake. As the sheriff told Staten, the truck matches the fender piece found at the crash site earlier in the season. The VIN was scrubbed in what looks like a pro job before the vehicle got dumped, but it’s under the Bandera jurisdiction now.

When Reid comes inside, Davis (Eoin Macken) asks him why the sheriff requested an off-the-record conversation with the two of them that afternoon? Reid doesn’t have an answer for him and, frankly, Davis probably doesn’t want to really know.

The Collins men head to meet with Sheriff Dan (Philip Winchester). Davis tries to paint the conversation as if they’re merely there to admonish Reid for underage drinking, but the sheriff questions where Reid was the night his cousin died. Davis is angry he's interrogating them about such a painful time for their family, but Reid starts talking.

That night, he and Tim (Niko Guardado) were shooting bottles out in the countryside and waiting on Randall to join them. When it was clear Randall wasn’t coming, he says the boys went home and played video games until they got the call about the crash.

Sheriff Dan asks why Reid initially told him he was with Lauren that night, but Davis stops things before his son can respond. He wants Paula Jo, who's a lawyer, involved. The sheriff agrees that’s a good idea since he has security footage of Reid leaving a truck the exact make and model as the one they just pulled out of the lake.

They’re interrupted by emergency alerts, but we get more of Reid’s haunting flashbacks as the episode goes. We see him getting a call from an unknown caller and telling Tim, “Change of plans” before they race off in the truck. Reid later takes the blue Ford truck from a garage and tells Tim they have to dump it. It’s clear these memories are paining the teen, as Lucas (Garrett Wareing) clocks and tells Reid that the reason he's so upset is because ultimately he's a good person.

Yancy's redemption

At the dance hall, Ellie (Marianly Tejada) is being cold to Yancy (Jack Schumacher) — he asks her why she stood him up for dinner the night before and she unloads all of the intel she got from Freddie. She knows that Yancy stole from a farm he previously worked at in Tennessee, which landed him in jail for three years; she also knows that Cap (James Brolin) is his grandfather and he's trying to pull a job on grandpa.

Furious and heartbroken, Ellie says she's done with him, and she'll tell Cap everything she found out unless Yancy walks out the door once the storm passes and never returns. Panicked, Yancy tells Davis that Ellie knows the truth about him — however, she still doesn't know about Davis's involvement, much to his relief. Davis tells him to do exactly as Ellie said, to disappear once the weather calms.

However, that plan changes when the men run into Cap, who's been trying to get a hold of his wife Ruth at the assisted care facility. He's dead-set on driving out himself to rescue her, a stubbornness that prompts Davis to question why the old guy doesn't just sell his land and whisk Ruth off to Florida for retirement, where it's warm and not tornado-y. Cap proclaims that Davis is not a real rancher — Fuller will work on his ranch until the day he dies. When he's gone, the courts can decide what becomes of the land. Yes, to the fellas' shock, Cap doesn't have a will, which means his ranch will automatically go to his next of kin, i.e. Yancy.

Later, when Ellie is looking for Cap, they realize he and his truck are missing — he went to go get Ruth. Yancy is ready to set out into the storm after him, though Davis tries to argue there's no point getting himself killed out there after the old man. But as Cap is driving down the road near the facility, he sees a truck trying to get his attention — it's Yancy there to rescue him.

The next morning, when the storm is over, Ellie rushes down to High Plains Regional, where residents from the assisted living facility were transferred during the tornado. She finds both Cap and Ruth safe and well, thanks to Yancy, who she pulls into a big hug.

Quinn's realization

Before the storm touches down, Quinn desperately searches for her dog, Biscuit, when Staten pulls up with her — he found her out near the highway. He helps Quinn secure the rest of her animals and then the two are forced to take shelter at the house as the tornado gets closer.

She gets a call from Davis, who isn't all that jazzed to hear she and Staten are alone together. The latter also gets in some jibes at Davis's sake, prompting Quinn to get real about what's been going on between them. She calls Staten out for declaring his feelings to her at the rodeo and then sleeping with Paula Jo the very same night. He says his heart was broken, but she proclaims he has broken hers a hundred times over the years. He knows she's only pretending things are right with Davis; he doesn't make her laugh, he declares.

Later, the power goes out, but Quinn lights candles and Staten scrounges up some batteries for the radio. "Tonight, Tonight" by The Smashing Pumpkins starts playing, which brings them both back to high school. Via flashback, we see a young Staten go over to Quinn and his future bride Amalah (played by Reese Witherspoon's daughter Ava Phillippe) — he's there to ask Quinn to dance but Amalah thinks he's asking her, so she pulls him out onto the dancefloor.

Back in present-day, a loud thunderclap prompts Quinn to seek comfort in Staten's arms. Dancing slowly, he reveals he meant to ask her to dance all those years ago. After a season's worth of tension, the two characters finally kiss and get intimate.

Lauren's rescue

Prior to the tornado, Lauren (Lizzy Greene) has been at the dance hall getting new waitressing gig there. However, when Lucas rushes from his trailer home to find her at the height of the storm, he realizes they're two ships passing and she's now stuck at his house with his older brother Kit (Casey W. Johnson).

Though Lauren and Kit have a lot of animosity between them — he still doesn't approve of her relationship with his brother — she manages to convince him they should head to the high school to take shelter. But when he rushes to go help a pregnant neighbor into her car, a tree crashes through the window of Lauren's vehicle and injures her leg. Left without a mode of transportation, Kit pulls her out of the car, and they instead hunker down together back in the trailer.

Kit cares for Lauren's wounds, a skill he later reveals is a product of the domestic abuse he suffered at the hands of his father. He didn't tell anybody because he didn't want to risk him and Lucas getting put into the system. He's grateful that his old man never laid a hand on his younger brother thanks to Kit's interventions. The surprising duo shares a moment, bonding over their trauma and abandonment from their respective parents.

The next morning, they — and thankfully all of the characters — have managed to weather the storm and emerge safely. Lucas rushes over to help Lauren with her injuries and give an update to her father.

But that's not the last we see of Kit. As the episode ends, we see Reid finally realize he needs to come clean with Sheriff Dan about what happened on the night of Randall's death. We flash back to the accident and see that the mysterious figure at the wreck wasn't Reid after all, but Kit. He phones Reid and proclaims: "Time to make good on that favor." Surprise!

Add a little amor to your weekend with a new Spain-set romance on the Hallmark Channel: Journey to You premieres tonight, April 19 at 8pm Eastern Time on the love-loving network.

The title is part of Hallmark's 2025 Spring into Love programming event, which also includes the recently released Hearts Around the Table film series as well as the upcoming Signed, Sealed, Delivered movie, To the Moon and Back.

Per Hallmark, the movie synopsis for Journey to You reads: "After missing out on a promotion, Monica reluctantly walks the Camino de Santiago at the urging of her mother. She’s surprised when along the way she finds inner peace and an unexpected romance." The romantic movie was largely filmed in central Spain, with much of the storyline taking place along the Carmen de Santiago pilgrimage route, so you can expect swooning Spanish vistas to go along with that sweet story.

Leading the Journey to You cast is Erin Cahill (Autumn at Apple Hill, Deck the Halls on Cherry Lane) as Monica Miller and Erik Valdez (Superman & Lois, General Hospital) as her unexpected beau. The ensemble also features Pamela Field as Dot, Yvette Filanc as Olivia, Eva García Montiel as Eva and Solal Bellaiche as Mateo.

Following the success of the network's Seven Deadly Sins films, Lifetime is kicking off another thrilling film franchise, kicking off with the premiere of Desire: A Temptations Story tonight.

Debuting at 8pm Eastern Time on Saturday, April 19, Desire: A Temptations Story will serve as the first film of the Temptations movie franchise, with each installment focusing on a different aspect of temptation. (Film two will focus on fame, for example.) Desire centers on a TV talk show host who gets swept up by a new love after suffering a tragic loss — however, her new beau has a mysterious and concerning past.

"Inspirational talk show host Kendra (Tasha Smith) who is at the top of her game when she faces the tragic loss of her mother. At the urging of her team, Kendra takes time off to heal her soul and while on vacation, Kendra meets the man of her dreams, Malcolm (Adrian Holmes)," reads the official movie synopsis, per Lifetime. "Taken by his charm and good looks, Kendra gives into her desires and becomes caught up in a whirlwind romance and spontaneously marries Malcolm. Once the newlyweds return home, truths about Malcolm’s past start to come to light and he leads Kendra down a dangerous path."

Along with Tasha Smith (Survival of the Thickest, Twinless) and Adrian Holmes Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Bel-Air), the Desire cast also includes Jamall Johnson, Millan Tesfazgi, Miranda Edwards, Everick Golding, Requell Jodeah and Diana Pavlovská. We are officially past the halfway mark for Ransom Canyon, the Netflix adaptation of Jodi Thomas's romantic Western novel series.

And Ransom Canyon episode 6, entitled "We Need to Talk About Reid", is certainly keeping the drama moving with romantic snafus, run-ins with law enforcements and reveals about what really happened during the car accident that shockingly claimed Randall Kirkland's (Hubert Smielecki) life.

Red flags

Fresh off his rodeo win, Yancy (Jack Schumacher) wants to use his $20,000 cash prize to buy a new tractor for Cap (James Brolin), a thoughtful move that charms new girlfriend Ellie (Marianly Tejada). (As you might remember from the last episode, he didn't have to fork over the money to Freddie & Co. because they were arrested last-minute for cattle-stealing.)

Ellie is less charmed, however, during a drive when she unexpectedly sees Yancy arriving at the care facility where Ruth Fuller lives. She finds out from Kai (Justin Johnson Cortez) that a young man has been spending a lot of time with Ruth there, and that the guy is allegedly Ruth and Cap's grandson.

Believing Yancy is up to no good, Kai decides to run a background check on him, while Ellie takes the opportunity to poke around the ranch for clues. Yancy nearly catches her going through the bags and boxes in his room, but she plays it cool, and they hook up instead.

She does, however, call him out about the nursing-home sighting. "You make it really hard to trust you," she tells him. He lies and tells her he's been going to see Ruth because he felt bad that Cap doesn't visit her anymore, saying she reminds him of his own grandmother. He apologies but she can't shake the nagging feeling there's a lot he's not telling her. He asks her to have dinner with him tomorrow — he'll be an open book for her, he promises.

However, she cancels on him after that background check comes back, revealing that Yancy's criminal record has mysteriously been sealed. She knows he's not a good guy, she just needs to get some answers — which she'll seemingly get from Freddie (Kenneth Miller), who she goes to visit in jail.

Green envy

Much to the annoyance of Quinn (Minka Kelly) and the awkwardness of Staten (Josh Duhamel) — who drunkenly slept with Davis's ex the episode prior — Paula Jo (Meta Golding) is still sticking around town. Even worse, she wants to use Quinn's dance hall to conduct some pipeline business. In the process of setting up the meeting, Paula Jo spills about her vehicular rendezvous with Staten at the rodeo the night before.

In an excellent coincidence, both Staten and Davis (Eoin Macken) show up to the dance hall at the same time, with Paula Jo pulling them into a conversation about Reid (Andrew Liner) — he can't keep staying at Staten's, she argues. Things get snippy between the men until Davis lands a particularly low blow, saying Staten taking in his nephew isn't going to bring his dead son back. That causes Staten to storm out.

The next we see of Staten, he's being bailed out of jail by Quinn — he was seemingly all fired up from his argument with Davis and assaulted some guy for no reason. As she's dropping Staten off home, they discuss Reid and Randall, and their conversation grows wistful. "Maybe somethings are best left in the past, no matter how beautiful they are," she tells him.

Davis is upset that, out of all the people he knows, Staten called Quinn to bail him out; he admits he's jealous of their connection. In turn, Quinn admits to some jealousy over Paula Jo, not only because she spent the night with Staten but because she bullied her into hosting a pipeline meeting at the dance hall.

During said meeting with a city councilman and Texas water development board member, Paula Jo puts a plan into place to order salination tests on Staten's wells. When the results come back brackish — and they will, she promises — the council will call for a vote to end grandfathered wells in the county, meaning Staten will be forced to spend millions retrofitting every single well, which will fundamentally force him to take the pipeline deal.

Quinn, who overheard Paula Jo's dealing, confronts her about messing with Staten's business. She threatens to tell Staten about the plan, but Paula Jo says the city council is going to rezone the town square next month and she'll make sure the dance hall loses its liquor license in the process.

Staten shows up to Davis' house to drop off Reid's things. Davis surprises him by inviting him in for a drink and apologizes for what he said at the dance hall, even more so when he admits that Staten hooking up with Paula Jo bugs him. ("Good!" Staten jokes.) Staten tells his brother-in-law it's time to make peace with Reid — he doesn't want him to regret not mending their relationship, like Staten does with Randall.

Blue trucks

In the first moments of the episode, we see a flashback to the night that Randall died — a mysterious figure checks on the boy in his badly mangled car, then rushes back to their own truck and rush off. Is it Reid?

Speaking of, Lauren (Lizzy Greene) tells Lucas (Garrett Wareing) that she hasn't spoken to Reid since she broke up with him last episode; things aren't going smoothly between Lucas and Reid, either, who basically start fighting every time they see each other.

But at least things are finally good between the young couple — Lucas tells her that, instead of Yale, Brown or Vassar, he wants to attend the University of Texas next year to be close to her. His older brother Kit (Casey W. Johnson) warns Lizzie, though, that things won't pan out for the two of them. The longer their relationship goes on, the worse things will be for Lucas, he says.

Later, the couple is spending time down by the lake with a bunch of other teens. They peel off for a private moment and are set to go skinny-dipping together — as Lauren is getting undressed though, Lucas goes swimming first and realizes that something is down there in the water. It's a truck.

When law enforcement arrives, Lucas tells Sheriff Dan (Philip Winchester) the pick-up he saw beneath the water's surface was blue. Staten arrives to the scene and realizes the vehicle is missing a bit of its fender, just like the piece he had found earlier in the season.

Set in the Texas Hill Country, it was only a matter of time before fans got a good rodeo episode from Ransom Canyon. And it's arrived with Ransom Canyon episode 5, entitled "I Love a Good Secret," which sees Yancy (Jack Schumacher) training for the big tri-county rodeo tournament to win the $20,000 that will get Freddie (Kenneth Miller) and his cronies off his back and out of Ransom.

Along with that adrenaline-pumping cowboy action, there's even more excitement coming to town when an old face from Davis' (Eoin Macken) romantic past pops up to complicate his burgeoning romance with Quinn (Minka Kelly). (As if that love triangle with Josh Duhamel's Staten wasn't complicated enough.) Add to that some concerning snooping by Sheriff Dan (Philip Winchester) into the whereabouts of Reid (Andrew Liner) and Tim (Niko Guardado) on the night of Randall's death, and you've got a pretty packed episode.

Wrangling the ex

Things are going smoothly for Quinn and Davis after their night together. He wants to take her on a romantic trip to New York, during which she can audition for that Philharmonic gig, but she wants to leave that part of her life behind her. From the dance hall to her soap line, things are going well for her now, she explains, and he's a part of that.

However, Quinn gets a rude awakening the next morning when Davis' fiery ex-wife, Paula Jo (Meta Golding), arrives. She's there to check up on what's going on with her son Reid — and insult Quinn in the process.

Though Quinn is initially worried about Paula Joe's reappearance, it seems the latter is in town on business, not pleasure: Austin Water & Power has apparently given her a seat on their board, she tells Davis. Since control isn't exactly her ex's strong suit, she says she's taking the pipeline negotiations into her own hands to secure Reid's financial future.

That means sidling up to Staten in the hopes he'll agree to the pipeline deal. She shows up at his house with tequila to thank him for taking in and supporting Reid — and makes suggestive nods to their own romantic past — before bringing up the issue of Quinn and Davis new relationship. Staten lies and says he doesn't really care about their relationship, though it's quite clear he does.

Odd couple

After bonding during the cattle drive last episode, Reid and Lucas (Garrett Wareing) are practically bosom buddies, watching old rodeo clips together and hanging out at school.

That does not go unnoticed by Lauren (Lizzy Greene), who complains to Lucas that it's weird for her to see the two of them acting chummy. He, on the other hand, is still upset she wants to hide their relationship from everyone and use Reid as a ruse. "He's a good guy who doesn't deserve this, and neither do I," he tells her.

For his part, Reid is busy fielding panicked texts from Tim that Sheriff Dan — who now believes someone ran Randall off the road that tragic night — asking questions about the car accident. When they run into the sheriff later, both boys offer up alibis for that evening: Tim was at home and Reid was with Lauren, they say.

Later, at the rodeo, Tim shows up (well, hobbles up — he's still on crutches) to confront Reid and plan what they're going to do about the sheriffs. Lucas overhears Tim and Reid talking but pretends not to. Lauren makes things worse by picking then and there to tell Reid that she's officially breaking it off between them. When he asks if the split is because of Lucas, she admits it is, which leads him to immediately storm over and punch his new buddy Lucas in the face.

One wild ride

Yancy has elected to compete in the All-Around, a particularly brutal competition that has Ellie (Marianly Tejada) worried. "Three days is not a lot of time" to train, she warns him. Adding to the stress of it all is Freddie breathing down his back about the money Yancy owes him. If he doesn't fork up the $20,000, "everybody in there is gonna find out who you really are," the criminal tells him.

The first round is a rough ride, with Ellie and Cap (James Brolin) watching worriedly from the stands, but Yancy does well and is right behind the score leader. Giving the cowboy an extra dose of good luck, Ellie gives him a big kiss between sets, which Kai spots — he tells her he has had suspicions about Yancy ever since Sheriff Dan picked him up from the side of the road. She says she was skeptical, too, but she was wrong, and so is he.

Yancy does well in round two, until Freddie tells him that he'll actually make more than $20,000 if he bets against him and Yancy purposefully gets bucked off the bull. Yancy doesn't want to throw the competition but if he doesn't, Freddie threatens that he'll kidnap Ellie next.

In the last run, he chooses not to throw the tournament and ends up winning the All-Around, getting the $20,000. However, right when Freddie comes up angry that he lost out on all of the money he could have made, Kai and the other sheriffs come and arrest Freddie — Cap identifies Freddie as the Angus dealer who sold him Staten's cattle, and he's taken away in handcuffs.

While being hauled off, though, Freddie tells Ellie that she fell for a con man and that she doesn't even know Yancy's real name. Uh-oh.

Elsewhere at the rodeo, Davis assures Quinn that whatever happened with Paula Jo in the past is in the past. "That ended before you and me, and that's how it's going to stay," he promises her.

However, there's still Staten to deal with. Seeing Quinn with Davis clearly hasn't been easy on him. During a private moment at the rodeo, he finally comes clean about his feelings for the dance hall owner. He knows he's broken and still grieving, "but if someday I'm not, it'll be because of you," he tells her, saying that she should be with him instead of Davis. In tears, she tells him it's too late and rushes off.

Soothing his sorrows with drink later, Staten later encounters a tempting Paula Jo — and the episode ends with the two of them getting intimate in a car in the rodeo parking lot. Double uh-oh.

Shocking secrets are revealed, surprising bonds are formed and romantic feelings are acted upon in Ransom Canyon episode 4. But first, there are cows to deal.

Things kick off with some mysterious men with wire clippers freeing some cattle from their pens in the dark of night. The next morning, one said cow makes its way into Quinn's (Minka Kelly) barn — she notices based on the branding that it's one of Staten's (Josh Duhamel).

After Staten comes to collect Reba (the cow, not the country music icon), he immediately rushes to the Collins ranch thinking that Davis (Eoin Macken) was being petty by cutting his fences and freeing his animals. But no, it wasn't Davis, he assures. So who was it?

When one of the Kirkland ranch hands alerts Staten there's a few dozen cows missing up in the canyon, he puts together a bit of a rescue team, including Lucas (Garrett Wareing) and, to Lucas's annoyance, Reid (Andrew Liner). The inclusion of Reid is as much about having him start earning his keep as it is about getting the teenage tornado out of Staten's house — his stuff is everywhere, he ate all of the lasagna and he keeps blasting "the worst music you've ever heard," Kirkland gripes.

Romance on the ranch

Davis has been having a rough few days, what with the father-son drama between him and Reid, as well as the Austin Water & Power folks breathing down his back about wanting to break ground and needing him to get Staten and Cap (James Brolin) to finally sign off on the pipeline deal.

When Quinn tries to give him some advice about the Reid situation — she thinks him kicking the teen boy out was a bit harsh, given that he's still clearly mourning the loss of his cousin Randall — Davis gets defensive and snaps at her. He later turns up at her door with an apology pizza, expressing regret over how he talked to her as well as about the whole jealousy fiasco with Staten.

They have a heart-to-heart that night: Davis comes clean about the ranch being in dire financial straits — that's why he's been acting so weird lately — and Quinn reveals the New York Philharmonic offer she received and how she seriously had been considering it. However, now she's wondering if she returned to Ransom because she was running from something or running toward something else.

At the moment, it seems the latter, with Quinn kissing Davis and inviting him to spend the night with her.

Roped into a rodeo

The simmering flirtation between Yancy (Jack Schumacher) and Ellie (Marianly Tejada) also seems like it's about to boil over this episode. After Yancy apologizes for missing the dance hall's opening party, Ellie makes it known she wants to get to know Yancy beyond his whole mystery man act.

While checking his stitches, he tells her about his troubled childhood spent in foster care and juvenile detention centers and his days as a rodeo performer. However, their intimate moment is interrupted by Cap, who wants to celebrate the purchase of cattle from some friends of Yancy's, he says.

Yancy realizes it was Freddie (Kenneth Miller) and his criminal crony behind the release and resale of Staten's stolen cows. They had told him they want a piece of whatever scheme he's in town cooking up, but he has heretofore refused, telling them he simply wants to keep his head down and work on Cap's ranch.

He offers them $20,000 to get out of Ransom for good. Where will he get the money? He'll win it at the rodeo, he tells them, having spotted a competition flyer in the men's bathroom at the dance hall.

Till the cows come home

Speaking of wrangling cattle and riding horses, Reid is having a hard time living the old rancher's life with the guys while trying to get all of Staten's cows back. When the men realize one calf is still missing, Reid wants to prove himself and offers to look for it, but Staten forces Lucas to join him. The boys spend much of their time together griping about Lauren (Lizzy Greene), until they hear the young animal lowing from a ditch, where it's stuck in some mud.

Staten tells the boys to leave the cow, he'll send someone out to rescue it, but Reid is insistent they can't leave the animal behind. However, before they can free the calf, the teens end up getting into a physical fight in the mud, until the realize how ridiculous they're being. Covered in mud, they eventually make amends over beers and bond over the unreasonable expectations their fathers set for them.

Eventually, they are able to free the calf from the muddy ditch, which leaves Staten impressed. When Reid returns to Staten's house for the night, he finds his bags are packed — but instead of asking Reid to leave, he tells him that he's moving him from the office couch to Randall's old room.

Sheriff's on the case

When Sheriff Dan (Philip Winchester) comes to Staten's ranch to check in about the cow burglary, Staten reminds him about the chop shop lead and the piece of a blue Ford truck fender that he found out near Randall's crash site.

The sheriff heads down to the Bandera shop to ask questions about the Ford truck, but the mechanic isn't all that helpful — until Sheriff Dan spots the building's security cameras and demands to see the footage. Going through clips from a year ago, the sheriff spots something shocking: Reid coming out of a blue Ford pick-up. Was he out on the road the night Randall died?
