Sam Womack and Rita Simons have reacted to their on-screen deaths in EastEnders, while their co-stars have paid heartfelt tributes

EastEnders cast members have rallied around their co-stars Sam Womack and Rita Simon, whose characters Ronnie and Roxy Mitchell died in a swimming pool tragedy on New Year's Day.

Sam said in a tweet after the episode screened on Sunday night, she was 'honestly broken' and called their deaths an 'appropriate end to the darkest year ever'.

But while Sam was in bits at the Mitchell girls' deaths, her on-screen partner Scott Maslen (Jack Branning) said it was sad times, but he loved working with the actresses.

Meanwhile, Jake Wood, who has just returned to EastEnders as Max Branning, called the women 'amazingly talented'.

Danny Dyer, who plays Mick Carter, said their relationship was 'on screen chemistry personnified' and they were 'two beautifully complex EastEnders icons'.

Ominously, a clearly upset Rita Simons (Roxy Mitchell) said: "I really don't have words right now. But words will come.."

TV viewers will be much more conscious of water safety in swimming pools after dramatic scenes in both EastEnders and Sherlock on New Year's Day!

Albert Square was the scene of the first pool drama, with both Ronnie and Roxy Mitchell drowning.

The pair had headed off to the pool to have some time together on Ronnie’s wedding day, but things took a terrible turn when Roxy dived in and failed to re-emerge.

Ronnie then went in after her, and she too drowned.

EastEnders fans were traumatised at the shocking ending to the Mitchell sisters’ story, although it had been known that actresses Samantha Womack and Rita Simons were leaving the soap.

And then it tipped it over the edge when Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) also found himself in trouble in the water.

The sleuth was investigating a mystery surrounding busts of Margaret Thatcher, and found himself up against a villain in a swimming pool.

The pair tussled in the water for some minutes, and fans just could not cope with any more...

Luckily, Sherlock made it out OK. At least that’s one out of three.

A newspaper report claims that EastEnders' Ronnie Mitchell will drown in a pool on her wedding day as she tries to save sister Roxy

As soap deaths go, this is definitely set to be a memorable one… We’ve known for a while now that Samantha Womack and Rita Simons’ EastEnders characters Ronnie and Roxy Mitchell will be leaving Albert Square over the festive period.

But now it seems like the sisters are due to meet a grisly end at New Year – and apparently, Ronnie will be killed by her own wedding dress.

According to The Sun, the tragedy is set to happen on Ronnie’s wedding day, which will end in a double death when both sisters drown at the venue.

Ronnie, played by Samantha, is remarrying former husband Jack Branning (Scott Maslen), but at the reception it’s reported that Roxy (Rita) will get jealous as she used to be in a relationship with Jack, too, and will drown in the swimming pool after having too much to drink.

The bride will be the one to find her, but when she jumps in after her sister, will find herself weighed down by her own billowing wedding dress before drowning in the pool, too.

An EastEnders source told The Sun: “It’s a slightly ridiculous way to go. It must be the first time in soap history anyone has been killed by an item of their clothing.

“Ronnie has been through some grim storylines in her time in Walford, it’s only fitting that she goes in a similar fashion. The scenes are going to be hard to watch.”

Ronnie’s had a tough time in Walford since arriving in 2007, with heartbreak including miscarrying after being pushed into the Queen Vic bar by dad Archie, who had abused her as a child; losing her baby with Jack to sudden infant death syndrome, then snatching Kat Slater’s baby as a replacement and being jailed for two years; and watching her long-lost daughter, who she had believed died in infancy, run over and killed in the Square just after finding out who she was.

Samantha and Rita have been spotted on location filming the scenes, with Samantha in a wedding gown and Rita wearing what looks like a bridesmaid’s dress.

Rita tweeted her emotion at what may have been the filming day for her exit from the BBC One soap.

Well, a paper says that EastEnders Christmas episodes will feature the Mitchell sisters.

The cast and crew of the BBC soap have been spotted filming Walford’s nativity and Ronnie and Roxy are in the scenes, the Mirror says.

And reports also suggest that they won’t have a happy New Year.

That is when Ronnie and Roxy are expected to be killed off, in an action-packed, special New Year’s Eve episode. Will it feature Dean Wicks (Matt Di Angelo)?

And will Billy Mitchell (Perry Fenwick), now running Les Coker’s funeral business, have to arrange the burial of Ronnie and Roxy?

Scenes were also reportedly being shot at the graveside of Peggy Mitchell (Barbara Windsor), who died in May.

An EastEnders source has confirmed that Ronnie and Roxy will have an “unmissable exit”.

And a permanent one, if the reports are to be believed. They will be dead Enders.

But will Dean be able to stay away from all the people he feels have wronged him: Roxy, Ronnie, mum Shirley (Linda Henry) and Linda (Kellie Bright), who he did rape?

Will Dean return to punish them – and will Ronnie and Roxy die punishing him after the courts failed to?

The sisters will reportedly meet their end during a sensational action-packed New Year's Eve EastEnders special.

Rita Simons (Roxy) and Samantha Womack (Ronnie) arrived on the Square back in 2007, and their characters have been through a lot in their nine years on the show.

Viewers have watched the sisters struggle with their difficult relationship with father Archie, and the pair's relationship was repeatedly tested when Roxy slept with her sister’s partners Jack Branning and Charlie Cotton.

Samantha’s character Ronnie has been at the centre of some of the soap’s most harrowing storylines. They include two murders, the admission that she was raped by her father and the tragic cot death of her son, James, in 2011.

In an interview, Samantha admitted that the cot death storyline gave her “the most horrific four weeks of my life”.

Last month, Samantha thanked fans for their support after the news of their shock exit hit headlines.

Writing to her fans on her Twitter account, the actress said: "Thank you SO much for all your kind words about me leaving EE.

"It's so humbling to know you loved Ronnie as much as I did! Very grateful Xxx"

Rita later added: "Thanku guys 4 all the continued love & support u have shown me (and Roxy) over the years. I'm so grateful for my time on EE. Love to u all."

In August, an EastEnders spokesperson said: “Having joined the show in 2007, Rita immediately won the hearts of the audience in the role of Roxy Mitchell and between her and Samantha Womack they created one of the most iconic duos EastEnders has ever seen.”

Other upcoming exits on EastEnders are reported to include Masood Ahmed, Les and Pam Coker, Lee Carter and Babe Smith.

Samantha apparently "jumped at the chance" to be part of an explosive story that will see her character Ronnie depart the square early next year. The 43-year-old was offered the dramatic exit plot by EastEnders' boss Sean O'Connor.

An EastEnders spokesman said: “We can confirm that Samantha Womack will be leaving EastEnders.

“Samantha has created an iconic character in Ronnie Mitchell, having superbly played out many of EastEnders’ biggest moments.

“However, Samantha was recently offered a big storyline which she happily accepted that leads to Ronnie departing Walford.

“We wish Samantha all the best for the future.”

Ronnie's exit is sure to be something pretty spectacular. During her nine years on the soap Ronnie has been involved in some of the show's biggest storylines, including murder, cot death and a baby swap story.

Recently, Ronnie has been the victim of stalker Andy Flynn (Jack Derges), who blamed the Mitchell for the death of his adopted sister, and Ronnie's daughter, Danielle.

A soap insider told The Sun: “It was felt that with everything Ronnie has been through over the past nine years it is now time to rest the character.

"The writers are working on an extremely exciting story for Ronnie, and when Sean presented the idea to Sam she jumped at the opportunity to do it.

“Sam already has a few projects lined up so she won’t be off screen for long!”

The actress took to Twitter to confirm she will be leaving EastEnders and thank her fans.

Honey Mitchell (Emma Barton) has tried her best to reunite Ronnie Mitchell (Samantha Womack) and Jack Branning (Scott Maslen) in EastEnders, but without any real success so far.

This week, however, she spots something online that makes Ronnie reconsider her relationship with Jack…

While browsing on social media, Honey finds a picture of Jack with a woman called Delphine. And, to make matters worse, there's a caption that reads, 'Last night of freedom'.

Does that mean Jack and Delphine are about to be married? It's enough to spark Ronnie into action when she later decides she's not going to wait around to find out.

After finding out the venue for the wedding, Ronnie tells Billy Mitchell (Perry Fenwick) to get a car. She's shocked when he turns up with a hearse, but it will have to do.

En route to the wedding, however, the hearse runs out of petrol and there's no way Billy can get it going again in time.

Ronnie decides there's only one thing for it, so she starts running. The wedding venue's not too far, but will she be able to make it on foot?

A hot and bothered Ronnie eventually arrives at the hotel reception, but is the wedding ceremony over? And how will Jack react when he realises she's there?

EastEnders have released some intriguing behind-the-scenes pictures of Ronnie and Billy Mitchell (Perry Fenwick) driving around remote countryside in a hearse, which suggest she could have enlisted the help of Billy to get rid of a body…

With their car broken down, are Billy and Ronnie going to get caught getting rid of a body?

And it could be Dean Wicks (Matt Di Angelo). He’s up in court in the coming week for his attack on Ronnie’s sister Roxy (Rita Simons).

But there’s no sign of Roxy and, without her testimony, Dean could walk free.

Ronnie wouldn’t like that. It could put her in a murderous mood… And she’s wanted Dean dead for a long time.

She also wanted former lover/police informant/Mitchell family enemy Vincent Hubbard dead.

Ronnie looks worried… What has she done now?

We know Ronnie has already tried to kill former lover/police informant Vincent Hubbard (Richard Blackwood) once – but ended up accidentally disposing of Fatboy (Ricky Norwood).

Has she been more successful second time round?

Or is she using Billy for something less deadly?

Ronnie definitely doesn’t look happy. In fact, she looks a bit worried. Is it because the hearse breaks down in the middle of nowhere?

Stuck in the middle of nowhere in a hearse… Has a deadly mission has gone wrong for Ronnie?

Or is she upset because whatever mission she’s on has gone badly wrong?

Ronnie can be seen in the hearse with Billy, looking at her phone. Are they looking for directions?

Or are they looking for Dean? Maybe Ronnie had him and he got away and she’s got Billy helping her look for him.

But if she’s up to no good she’s hardly being discreet: that hearse is not for undercover operations, just official six-feet-under business.

Exactly what – or who – are Ronnie and Billy looking for?

Whatever they’re doing, we bet Billy’s missus, Honey (Emma Barton), wouldn’t approve. She hates Billy getting dragged into Mitchell family dramas and, if this is a really big one, Billy could find himself dumped by Honey all over again.

The answer to which Walford resident would not survive Christmas was answered in grisly fashion as a tragic case of mistaken identity led to a Boxing Day murder in EastEnders.

On Christmas Day, viewers were left wondering who the innocent man was that Ronnie (Samantha Womack) had sealed inside a vehicle headed for the car crusher instead of her ex-lover Vincent (Richard Blackwood), as their feud reached fever pitch.

In the following episode, Vincent confronted a panicked Ronnie at The Arches, where the sickening truth was dawning on her: the wrong person was taken by her hired heaves. Ronnie had said to take the driver of Vincent's car, thinking it would be him, as she had sent him to buy more ice for The Albert.

In a tense moment – and with Ronnie, Roxy (Rita Simons) and Jack (Scott Maslen) in hot pursuit – Vincent arrived just in time to stop the car being crushed, but opened the boot to find Arthur “Fatboy” Chubb (Ricky Norwood) dead inside.

As the plot thickened, Vincent told his mother, Claudette (Ellen Thomas) that they were responsible for Fatboy’s death because of the “stupid war we’re waging with the Mitchells”.

He then defied his mother’s order to tell Ronnie that Fatboy was dead, in a bid to end the hurt the families were causing each other.

Instead, Vincent told Ronnie, Roxy and Jack, who had not seen the body in the car: “They scammed you, you crushed an empty car… Your goons planned to take your money and run.”

In a heart-breaking scene, Vincent then went to see Dot Branning (June Brown) to tell her that her friend Fatboy would not be coming back.

“He’s got a New Year’s gig, some ski resort in Austria,” Vincent lied. “If it goes well, he might be staying, he said.”

The other life hanging in the balance in the Boxing Day episode was Sharon’s son Denny Rickman, who had a brain bleed as a result of drunk Phil’s car crash.

But it remains to be seen whether the body count from the events of Christmas Day will rise further as the episode ended with Sharon (Letitia Dean) and Phil (Steve McFadden) waiting to see if Denny would survive surgery.

Back in the Square, Ian (Adam Woodyatt) and Jane (Laurie Brett) had agreed not to go to the police to report their son Bobby for killing his sister Lucy.

But things went pear-shaped quickly… Ian had agreed to take the blame for Phil's crash in exchange for Phil and Sharon keeping quiet about Bobby's guilt. But then the police arrived to arrest Ian on suspicion of dangerous driving.

Of all the soaps on Christmas Day, it was EastEnders that left us - but more especially Ronnie (Samantha Womack) - with one burning question: who is in the boot of that car?

Ronnie clearly thought she had arranged for super grass and sworn Mitchell family enemy Vincent (Richard Blackwood) to be disposed of in the same way she finished off Carl White.

But suddenly Vincent was standing next to Ronnie at the bar.

“How did you get out of the car?” Ronnie asked Vincent.

“What car?” he replied.

And panic was written all over Ronnie’s face as she raced to Phil’s garage… But the car was gone, already on its way to the scrapyard.

Can Ronnie keep the car - and its contents - in one piece?

Or has she accidentally arranged for the death of an innocent man - such as Fatboy (Ricky Norwood)?

He was warned to disappear by Vincent, who felt betrayed by Fatboy. But has he got so mixed up in the Hubbard/Mitchell feud that it has cost him his life?

Or is Vincent messing with Ronnie's head - and is she running into life-threatening danger?

Is nasty Ronnie Mitchell about to get her comeuppance?

Ronnie Mitchell [Sam Womack] is will be arrested for the murder of Carl White, after a betrayal by her sister Roxy [Rita Simons].

The dramatic arrest will take place during what's supposed to be a nice family lunch, organised by Sharon [Letitia Dean] as she tries to keep her family together.

Ronnie killed Carl (Daniel Coonan) in 2014, to protect Roxy and herself… Carl had been giving former addict Roxy drugs and Ronnie was furious. She told Carl to get out of Walford but, instead, he tried to rape her. A swift car boot door to his head and then a car crusher made sure he would never bother the Mitchell sisters again.

As our pictures reveal, Dean Wicks (Matt Di Angelo) doesn't look at all upset as Ronnie is taken away, but Roxy is devastated - and admits it was her who dropped Ronnie right in it with the police..

All Ronnie has been trying to do, in her own twisted way, is try to protecy Roxy from Dean, before he hurts her the way he hurt Linda Carter (Kellie Bright).

But it looks like she might be too late… Dean has manipulated Roxy to the point where she's convinced he's the best thing that's ever happened to her.

Will she realise too late that the rapist is, in fact, her worst nightmare?

“As far Dean goes, there is justice,” says Dominic Treadwell-Collins. “And how it’s meted out will be satisfying but shocking too.”

We know he ends up being dragged out of a lake and looking very dead on New Year's Day, the day of Mick (Danny Dyer) and Linda's wedding.

But what about Ronnie? Does she have anything to do with putting Dean in the lake? Or does she spend Christmas at Her Majesty's pleasure?

To Dean and Roxy's surprise, Ronnie turns up at their engagement celebrations full of apologies for her earlier behaviour. But whose bag is that she's rummaging through?

It's clear Ronnie is up to no good when she sends a furtive text – but from whose phone?

Could it be a coincidence that, moments later, Dean receives a text?

Someone's clearly playing games. Dangerous games. But will Ronnie's plan to get rid of Dean work?

Later, the pair meet up at The Albert, where the scene is set for a dramatic showdown. Has Ronnie finally got the better of her rival? Or has the crafty crimper got one final trick up his sleeve?

We know Roxy Mitchell has been having fun and frolics with bad boy Dean Wicks (Matt Di Angelo) in EastEnders, and that her big sis, Ronnie, isn't happy about her choice of bloke (it's better than Charlie, Ronnie's husband, surely).

So when Ronnie (Samantha Womack) discovers Roxy's been telling fibs about ending it with the dodgy hairdresser, there's yet another Mitchell confrontation in store. But will Roxy (Rita Simons) convince her controlling sibling that she's ended the fling and ditched Dean or is a doubting Ronnie about to come up with another cunning plan?

After Roxy had reassured concerned sister Ronnie that she had dumped loverboy Dean, Ronnie is on to her when she recognises a new top Roxy's wearing - the very same that she spotted Dean buying at the market earlier that day!

Unwilling to let Roxy off the hook, Ronnie confronts her about her lies and ongoing affair with Dean. As a result, Roxy's forced into admitting that she's still seeing him. Given Ronnie's reputation for getting rid of folk she doesn't like, what has she got planned for Dean?

After rowing with Roxy, and then apologising, Ronnie puts on the charm and pretends she's fine about the couple. She even invites the dark and moody Dean to dinner to put things right, which he thinks is promising... until she warns him not to hurt Roxy. Or else! 

But a fuming Dean is well aware of Ronnie's devious meddling, having accidentally discovered her CCTV set-up at home, and decides it's time that her trusting little sis is told all about Ronnie's sneaky snooping. Will Roxy believe him?

As Dean snaps when Roxy defends her sister and blurts out paranoid Ronnie's method of keeping tabs on Roxy, little do the pair realise that the CCTV is still in operation and Ronnie is keeping tabs on the pair and all that's being said.

How will Ronnie handle the revelation? But more to the point, how will riled Roxy react when she confronts her sister over her spying?

Roxy knows Ronnie is capable of some underhand ways, but this shock revelation could wreck their relationship for good. Will Ronnie come to regret her I-Spy antics and will husband Charlie find out, too, now it's out in the open?

When Roxy confronts Ronnie about her prying and controlling actions, how will Ronnie explain herself? Or is it too late to even try? This could be the end of the road for the sisters' already rocky relationship...

Kim is terrified of Vincent, her baby’s daddy, convinced she saw him kill someone.

EastEnders’ spectacular car crash in the January 1 episode, which may still kill Ronnie Mitchell (Samantha Womack) or Emma Summerhayes (Anna Acton), drew an audience of 8.53 million for BBC1 on New Year’s Day.

It was a good night for the BBC, with the comedy Mrs Brown’s Boys being watched by nearly eight million, while the final episode of the sitcom Miranda attracted 7.27 million viewers. BBC’s adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Esio Trot, starring Dame Judi Dench and Dustin Hoffman, drew 6.47 million viewers.

Emmerdale was ITV’s biggest scorer with viewers, attracting 5.76 million but it was bad news for Birds of a Feather, which scored its lowest audience since it returned in 2014, with 3.68 million watching. 

The fireworks are still going off in Albert Square on New Year’s Day as Emma Summerhayes (Anna Acton) talks to Lucy’s killer.

“Some secrets are horrible…” says Stan (Timothy West), in this chilling preview of EastEnders’ New Year’s Day episode.

But the secret gripping certain residents of Albert Square has nothing to do with the Carters this time… It’s all about Lucy’s murder.

New Year’s Eve showed us that former police officer Emma is still playing detective and has worked out who killed Lucy.

Tonight’s episode shows that Max’s (Jake Wood) New Year starts with a furious fight - with Emma, who’s fighting him off and shouting at him to leave her alone. 

Does she think HE killed Lucy?

Emma sends a text to someone that reads: “I can’t keep the secret”.

Is that going to put Emma in danger?

Ronnie (Samantha Womack) certainly is in trouble. Nasty Nick (John Altman) didn’t take her money and run like she told him to. He seems determined to make an appearance at her wedding.

But there’s a car running out of control in the Square… Will it make Nick really dead? And who’s behind the wheel?

In a new trailer released by EastEnders it looks like Ronnie (Samantha Womack) has gone to the dark side again.

The video, to promote the Monday, June 23 episode, opens on a light note, with Ronnie’s dancing around the kitchen to the song Walking on Sunshine.

But we hear Roxy (Rita Simons) telling Aleks (Kristian Kiehling) that “she’s always been a few sandwiches short of a picnic", and it’s clear that all is not as happy as it seems.

Then Phil’s at the front door, asking, “Is Ronnie here?”.

“She’s upstairs. Has something happened, Phil?” Roxy asks, sounding concerned.

And something must have happened - or be about to happen - as it’s clear that Phil (Steve McFadden) is not there for a social visit. He says nothing as he heads upstairs.

In Ronnie’s bedroom, Ronnie and Phil are sitting on her bed and Ronnie says to Phil, “You’ve got to have back-up".

“What do you mean?” asks Phil.

Yes, what do you mean, Ronnie?

Ronnie reaches into her bedside table and pulls out a gun.

“I don’t think I know who you are any more,” Phil tells her.

“I’m a Mitchell, Phil.” says Ronnie, with the gun in her hands. “I’m a Mitchell.”

What is Ronnie’s secret? asks the trailer.

Has she used that gun already? Or is she planning to use it?

Even before her baby died but especially since she came out of prison, Ronnie Mitchell (Samantha Womack) has been messed up. Now her cousin Phil (Steve McFadden) is going to discover just how messed up she really is, reports the Mirror.

Phil has already shown signs of concern for Ronnie after she killed Carl White, got rid of his body, had his brother beaten to a pulp and then warned off his family.

So you can only imagine the look on Phil’s face when Ronnie brandishes a firearm.

To say that Phil is worried is an understatement.

Why does Ronnie have a gun? And is she planning to actually use it?

All will be revealed in EastEnders, on BBC1, Monday, June 23.

EastEnders star Samantha Womack has revealed she expected viewers to hate Ronnie Mitchell.

"With child abduction and murder on her record, she should be public enemy number one!" said Samantha, referring to Ronnie's prison time for taking Kat Moon's baby and her murder of Carl White.

"It's a weird thing - people forgive Ronnie for a lot more than they would other characters.

"Everyone has seen her trauma - with her daughter Danielle, and baby James and her dad Archie - so they're all kind of rooting for her. The audience tries to understand why she does what she does, and they're with her every step of the way. They always see her as a victim."

The actress is not sure if Ronnie can get away with murdering Carl.

"She's taken another human life so it's only a matter of time before that ticking time-bomb will go off!"

Ronnie Mitchell is desperate to get her fragile sister, Roxy, away from Carl White in EastEnders. But so desperate she's prepared to kill?

In the coming week, Ronnie tries to persuade Roxy to move with her to Ibiza, but Carl says he's taking her to Paris. He threatens Ronnie, then tries to rape her!

Despite cold-blooded warnings from Ronnie and Phil, Carl refuses to leave the square and instead kidnaps Amy and Roxy – and Ronnie feels forced to take drastic action.

Samantha Womack reveals to Soaplife that Ronnie’s baby-snatch nightmare comes back to haunt her when she finds herself looking after little Lexi in EastEnders…

How does Ronnie come to be taking care of Lexi?

“Lexi’s taken ill when she’s at the child minder’s. They can’t reach Lola or Billy and it’s Ronnie who takes the call and ends up looking after Lexi.”

But Lola’s scared when she finds out Ronnie has her baby…

“As Lola and Billy arrive home they hear Ronnie talking to Lexi and they can tell Ronnie’s frightened. Lola realises Ronnie means Lexi no harm and is really reassuring, telling her it’s fine, she’s family after all.”

Jack seems to have forgiven her, too and they’ve spent the night together…

“Ronnie still loves him. They’ve got so much history, but I don’t think she really wants to open up that side of herself. For her to survive, she needs to switch off that part of herself.”

Does that mean she’s going to dump him?

“Wait and see! But I think it’s too soon for her to be linked with anyone romantically.”

She's struggling to reconnect with Roxy, too…

“That’s down to Alfie; he doesn’t want Roxy near Ronnie. Even though Roxy is doing the worst possible thing in rejecting her, Ronnie forgives her.”

And Roxy does start to see Ronnie behind Alfie’s back…

“It’s all about the Mitchell clan for Ronnie. She’s rallying the troops, getting all the Mitchells back together. We know the pain Ronnie has been through, now it’s more interesting to see somebody pull themselves together.”

What can you tell us about Jack’s leaving storyline?

“I was sobbing uncontrollably during his leaving scenes. I’m very close to Scott [Maslen, who plays Jack], he’s like a brother. There was a send-off here, but privately we’ll do something like dinner - which I’m sure I’ll end up cooking!”

Ronnie gets out of jail!

Samantha Womack tells Soaplife that EastEnders' Ronnie Mitchell has done her time and is done with saying sorry… That sounds like fighting talk!

Ronnie’s back in Walford and they’re not exactly hanging out the bunting. She returns to Albert Square after two years in jail for stealing Kat’s son Tommy and has no idea her sister Roxy is engaged to Alfie. “Ronnie feels like she’s not in the Square that she left. It’s changed,” Samantha tells Soaplife. “But she won’t take a lot of grief because she feels like she’s done her time.” Do Kat, Alfie and Jack feel the same, though?

Is Ronnie expecting Roxy to meet her at the prison gates?

“She is, but Kat is there instead. It’s a complete surprise to see her and quite terrifying. Ronnie and Kat talk about their feelings and their experiences. Kat’s a lot more understanding about it now than she was when it happened.”

It must be a shock when Kat tells her Roxy and Alfie are engaged?

“It’s a little awkward. It’s understandable that Alfie feels very threatened and protective towards Tommy, but what’s lovely about it is that Ronnie doesn’t feel at all betrayed by Roxy. She says she understands and she wants Roxy to be happy.”

How does Ronnie feel when she sees Jack again?

“He refuses to talk to her and slams the door in her face the first time she goes to see him, which is upsetting. I think Ronnie still loves Jack, but she has to remove herself from love now in order to survive. She’s going to become a matriarch, someone who is fighting for the survival of her family.”

Scott [Maslen who plays Jack] is leaving soon… Will you be sad to see him go?

“Yes. Part of my reason for coming back was to be involved in his leaving storyline. I feel a huge loyalty to the character and to Scott. Our characters were very successful together. There are lots of tribute videos to Ronnie and Jack on the internet that I secretly watch.”

How long are you back for?

“Six months at the moment, mainly because I don’t know if the character is going to succeed. I’ll regroup in six months and talk about whether or not it has worked. I’m glad to be back. I felt Ronnie was unfinished business…”

EastEnders' Ronnie Mitchell's sense of unease continues when Kat Moon offers to let her stay on her sofa.

Ronnie has just served a two-year sentence for stealing Kat's baby, Tommy, swapping him with the body of her own son who she had lost to cot death and letting the couple believe their child had died.

Ronnie (Samantha Womack) is shocked when Kat turns up to collect her from prison instead of her sister Roxy. But keen to get back to Albert Square, she is forced to accept Kat's offer to stay with her.

And Ronnie is even more uncomfortable when she wakes up to find Michael Moon now lives with Kat.

Ronnie took a disliking to Michael (Steve John Shepherd) as soon as he arrived in EastEnders three years ago, and tried to make his life difficult. When he dated Roxy, Ronnie even lied that he had made a move on her to try and split them up.

Now he has the upper hand, will Michael make life even more difficult for Ronnie?
