If you own a Samsung device, be it one of the company's phones, TVs or even refrigerators, you may have come across something called Samsung TV Plus.

This is Samsung's very own streaming service delivering more than a hundred live TV channels, thousands of movies and exclusive shows on demand. It's equivalent to a live TV streaming service but ad-supported instead of paid-for.

Whether you're an existing Samsung customer who wants to try out this new tool, or a prospective one who wants to check out the perks, here's what you need to know about Samsung TV Plus.

Samsung has unveiled a new range of Micro LED TVs as part of its First Look live stream ahead of CES 2021. This new line of cutting-edge tech promises both a top-of-the-line user experience and new utility both at launch and later down the line.

The South Korean tech company are no stranger to bringing giant, Micro LED TVs to CES. Last year, they debuted The Wall, the monstrous 292-inch display that towered over any other TV at the trade show. 

This new line aims to bring that luxury product into more homes, in more useful sizes. The 2021 Micro LED range is initially only available in 110-inch and 99-inch sizes, but smaller variants are supposedly in the pipeline for later in the year.

Each Micro LED TV is made from literally millions of LEDs, each thinner than a strand of hair. Every single one of them is self-lit in red, green and blue. This means there’s no loss of brightness or clarity to create ‘true-to-life picture quality’, according to Samsung.

They are also more durable, as each Micro LED is made from inorganic materials which are longer-lasting. This should prevent a loss of picture quality from burn-in and discoloration for a lot longer than other TVs. This premium picture quality promise is designed for immersion, which matches up with Samsung’s “Monolith Design” philosophy.

Essentially, this philosophy means each MICRO LED screen has a 99% screen-to-body ratio. You’ll see as little of the bezel as possible to ensure you are totally immersed in whatever you’re watching or playing. 

This immersion won't just come from the picture quality, though. Samsung revealed each MICRO LED unit delivers 5.1 channel sound without an external speaker whatsoever. The aim is to create what they call “Arena Sound”, replicating the dynamic audio you’d associate with the cinema.

Ambient Mode+ is another feature worth mentioning. This mode enables your screen to blend in with the room, or display ambient info like weather conditions. There’s also a mode which transforms the display into a moving, digital artwork.

Samsung have updated and unveiled their 2021 Lifestyle TV range ahead as part of their First Look live stream ahead of CES 2021 next week.

Lifestyle TV is a range of distinct TVs (and one projector!) designed to offer you a unique product that best fits both your style and needs. The updated 2021 Lifestyle TV range has five distinct models: The Frame, The Premiere, The Sero, The Serif and The Terrace.

The Presentation leaned more on The Frame and The Premiere as the stars of this particular show, which makes sense since both have won an Innovation Award at CES 2021. 

Sadly, no pricing or specific model names have been announced just yet. However, you can still learn a little bit about the entire Lifestyle TV range below:

The Frame

The Frame (pictured above) first debuted back in 2017, but this new iteration builds upon its predecessor's customizability in plenty of ways. When not in use, The Frame uses its display to show off works of art from around the world.

The 2021 Frame TV is about half the width of previous iterations, measuring at only 24.9mm thick. It comes in sizes from 32 inches, all the way up to 75. The two smallest sizes, 32- and 43-inches, can be mounted vertical as well as horizontally.

You can customise The Frame with different stands, frames, five different colour options, and two types of style - Modern and Beveled - to match your TV to your room.

If you choose to subscribe to The Frame’s brand-new Art Store, ($5 a month) you will be able to choose from a library of 1,400+ curated art pieces to display when your Frame TV is not in use. 

These art pieces come from a range of art galleries across the globe, including the Tate in England, and Prado Museum in Spain. AI-based technology will auto-curate your library based on your individual preferences in order to recommend new pieces to be displayed.

The Premiere

The Premiere first appeared in 2020, with the aim of bringing the cinema experience home.

Whilst not an actual TV, The Premiere's main function as part of the Lifestyle TV range is to bring a cinema-quality experience home to you. This little box is an HDR  10+ enabled, Ultra Short Throw, 4K Triple Laser projector.

Triple Laser technology means the projector has distinct red, green and blue light sources, making scenes appear more vibrant and even more colourful than before.

The Premiere also comes with 4.2 ch 40w All-in-one Sound on-board, which Samsung says is powerful enough to fill your entire space with dynamic sound.

Being an Ultra short-throw projector creates a screen just a few feet above it, and can produce a maximum screen size of 130 inches. It also doesn't require much space to function, needing to sit only 4.4 inches away from the wall you're projecting on.

Both Frame and The Premiere have won the 2021 CES Innovation Award.

The Sero

The Sero is a TV designed with your phone screen in mind. Each unit is "mobile optimized", adapting to both horizontal and vertical content. The only difference is, your working with a 43-inch display, rather than 5 or 6 inches.

Each Sero TV comes on an integrated, motorized mount. If you own a Samsung Galaxy phone and sync it with your TV, the Sero will rotate to match your phone's orientation.

Each Sero also delivers 4.1 channel, 60W sound experience to get the most out of any content you're watching, whether its cast from your phone or not.

The Serif

The Serif is part sculpture, part TV. Like The Frame, The Serif is all about giving consumers freedom with where they mount or display their new TVs.

The Serif's distinct, angular bezel has been created in collaboration with French designer Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec. With it's unique extra depth, The Serfic can be placed in a room either freestanding on its bezel, or mounted on a stand.

There were no other details given in the presentation, save that The Serif also comes with Samsung's QLED technology to deliver a quality display.

The Terrace

The Terrace is designed for those who want to spend time outdoors, but still want to try and binge their latest show.

This is a more conventional TV compared to the Frame or The Serif, but The Terrace has been purpose-built to withstand being outside the room.

The Terrace houses a QLED display inside a frame that has enhanced durability to stand up to the natural elements including dust, rain and temperature changes.

The Lifestyle TV range isn't the only innovative range debuted in the First Look livestream, though. Samsung also gave us a rundown of their huge MICRO LED TVs, and explained their NEO QLED displays in a lot more detail, too.

Samsung today announced that its upcoming line of QLED televisions will support HDR10+ Adaptive, which supports Filmmaker Mode and will adjust itself accordingly to brighter rooms.

Noting that most high dynamic range content is optimized for darker viewing environments, Samsung has put a lot of effort (and money) into televisions that live as works of art in your living room, namely in The Frame line of sets.

Here's how Samsung puts things:

While viewing HDR content is typically optimal in a darkened environment, customers’ viewing environments may vary greatly depending on a wide array of factors, including room lighting, time of day, and proximity to windows. The HDR10+ Adaptive feature supports dynamic scene-by-scene optimization, following guidelines from the HDR10+ LLC, and can now adjust to any room lighting condition, further enhancing the HDR experience. This feature utilizes the TV’s light sensor and ensures that the screen brings to life the creative intent without any loss of details or contrast.

HDR10+ content is available on Amazon Prime Video for titles that are presented in 4K UHD, Samsung noted in a press release.

“As consumers spend more time at home, Samsung has been looking for ways to enrich consumers’ entertainment experience in the comfort of their homes,” Younghun Choi, Executive Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics, said in the press release. “We are delighted to offer smart picture quality solutions that will enhance consumers’ at-home HDR viewing experience, bringing original-quality cinematic experience to our consumers around the world.”

In addition to the adaptive nature of HDR10+ Adaptive, the standard also supports Filmmaker Mode, which will automatically adjust picture settings in an attempt to approximate what the filmmaker was going for on the big screen.

Expect more news on the upcoming line of Samsung TVs as we head into the virtual CES event. 

Amazon has Samsung's 65-inch Q70T 4K HDR smart TV on sale for $1,097.99. You can find a similar price at Best Buy , B&H , and other retailers. The TV normally sells for around $1,300. We have only seen it drop this low once before, and that deal expired after one day. Since this TV is being featured as a Best Buy daily deal, we assume the same thing is going to happen here. Grab it for this low price while you can.

The Q70T series is from Samsung's 2020 QLED lineup. While it is on the lower end of the lineup in terms of features, it's also on the lower end in terms of cost. If you want that beautiful QLED technology, this is a great way to do it. Today's deal puts the Q70T nearly $500 less than the moderate step-up the Q80T , so you're saving hundreds and not losing out on much.

The Q70T series uses a Quantum Processor with deep-learning AI for all your 4K content, which also helps upscale less-than-4K stuff so you always have the best image on your screen. Quantum HDR also gives you an expansive range of colro and detail. It has a 240 Motion Rate, which keeps everything smooth even when there's a ton of action on the screen.

Samsung TVs also have this thing called Ambient Mode. Basically, for your average TV when it's not in use it's just a giant, ugly black box on your wall or sitting uselessly in the corner of the room. Ambient Mode lets you make your TV useful at all times. Either you can display some artwork and neat visuals on the empty screen or actually get relevant info like the weather available to you with a simple glance.

The Q70T has Amazon's Alexa built right in so you can use the smart assistant to control the TV with your voice. She can change the channel, raise and lower the volume, search for movies, and more. Plus you'll be able to control the rest of your smart home, too.

One of Samsung's newest TVs is on sale today. You can get the Samsung 75-inch 4K TU8000 smart TV on sale for $997.99 at Amazon. That's an all-new low for a TV that was selling for as much as $1,280 in February and hadn't dropped below $1,200 until this sale. Today's price puts it within $300 of the 65-inch version of the TU8000, which is huge considering the jump from 65 to 75 is usually hundreds more. You can find this deal or something close to it at other retailers. For example, the same TV is $999.99 at Best Buy .

If you're looking for a huge screen with 4K resolutions, you won't find a better bargain anywhere right now. The TU8000 is perfect when size and resolution are the most important. Not to mention, this is not an older model TV. The TU8000 was released as part of Samsung's 2020 lineup and has only been around since February. That means whatever tech is in this TV is the latest and greatest from Samsung.

Not only do you get 4K resolutions, but the TU8000 also has an ultrafast processor that will transform everything you watch into 4K, including upscaling lower resolutions to Ultra HD-level picture quality. The TV also supports HDR content through the HDR10+ and HLG formats.

Use all the smart features to make watching TV a more convenient experience. The set includes built-in voice assistance from Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, or even Samsung's Bixby. Control the TV with your voice. Change the channels, adjust the volume, get relevant information like the weather, and so much more. You can also use the built-in smart platform to find all of your favorite streaming apps.

The TU8000 is one of Samsung's budget models so it does lack some of the more advanced features of the other members in the Samsung 2020 lineup. For example, it has no local dimming, which means it lacks the contrast ratio seen in more advanced models. And while it does support HDR, the TV does not have a very high peak brightness. It also uses a VA panel, which means it lacks the viewing angles and color gamut that would make this a primary centerpiece for your home. However, you're also saving hundreds versus TVs that might hit those marks. So whether the savings are worth it is up to you.

Just in time for summer, Samsung has announced a new outdoor TV dubbed "The Terrace." (Which could get fairly confusing if you're actually using it on a terrace.) It's a 4K QLED television "that's specifically designed to bring the full indoor entertainment experience outside."

The Terrace is available in 55-, 65- and 75-inch models. And it's designed for the outdoors with an IP55 rating, meaning it's dust-tight and should protect "against water jets projected by a novel from any angle." So there's that. (There also will be an optional dust cover, Samsung says, which we'd definitely recommend.)

Brightness definitely is a factor when you're talking about watching TV outdoors. And to that end The Terrace has a brightness level of 2,000 nits.

This is a Tizen-based television, of course, and has all the Samsung smarts you're used to, along with Wifi and Bluetooth. It's got three HDMI connections and one USB, Ethernet (for those of you who have Ethernet on your lanai, and an optical audio port. It also handles HDR10+. There's also a new Terrace Soundbar to go with it — and it can either be mounted to the wall, or directly to The Terrace TV itself. It also has the same IP55 rating.

Size often can be a factor outdoors. The 55-inch model measures 49 inches across and 28.7 inches tall, and 2.4 inches deep. The 65-incher takes things up to 57.7x33.5x2.4 inches, and the 75-incher hits 66.6x38.6x2.4 inches.

Along with The Terrace and The Terrace Soundbar, Samsung also announced the release of its three new series of soundbars — the Q, S and T series. (All of which were previously seen at CES in January.)

The Samsung Q series — the flagship group — features wireless subwoofers, and Dolby Atmos in two of its three models. It also features Samsung's "Acoustic Beam Technology," which mixes the audio in conjunction with the environment.

The Samsung T Series is the follow-up to the Samsung R Series. And the S marks a new "lifestyle philosophy" and is coated with textiles from Kvadrat. And the S60T features Amazon Alexa on board.

The unique feature of Samsung's Frame TV lineup is its Art Mode. When you aren't using the TV, it basically becomes the frame of a work of art (hence the name). You can choose your favorite art, even buy some of the ones available to support local artists with the Samsung Art Store that has an entire library of content to pick from. Customize what is and isn't shown, too. The TVs have built-in motion sensors that detects you entering the room and begins to display the pieces you've selected. That way it serves a purpose even if you're not planning to watch any shows.

Samsung has today announced that it's bringing Apple Music to its Smart TVs!

In a press release Samsung stated :

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. announced that beginning today, it is the first TV brand to integrate Apple Music on its Smart TV Platform. Consumers in over 100 countries will now be able to enjoy Apple Music right away on their Samsung Smart TVs.As people worldwide spend more time at home, Samsung has been adding more entertainment and wellness options to its Smart TV platform. With Apple Music – available on models from 2018 through 2020 – subscribers can stream over 60 million songs ad-free, watch top music videos, and explore thousands of playlists curated by world-class music experts and tastemakers.

Apple Music subscribers will get access to all the features of the mobile service, including daily recommendations and Beats 1 Radio. There's also a new "At Home with Apple Music" feature that includes new editorial playlists, group FaceTime chats with artists, interviews, and more.

In a statement, Samsung's Salek Brodsky said:

"Our goal has always been to deliver the best entertainment experiences to consumers – and as people spend more time at home, we are more committed to that mission than ever... Last year, we were the first TV manufacturer to offer the Apple TV app, and today, we are the first to offer Apple Music. Our partnership with Apple has been instrumental in bringing consumers an unparalleled lineup of different entertainment options, especially as they seek out more content choices from their Smart TVs."

To get access, Samsung Smart TV owners can download Apple Music on the Samsung Smart TV App Store. Then, you just need to sign in with your Apple ID. If you don't have an Apple Music subscription, you can begin one right then and there on your TV, and even get a 3-month free trial. Samsung Smart TV customers will also get access to original shows, trending concerts, and "exclusive content".

Samsung today has taken the wraps of a number of fitness apps available on its Samsung Smart TVs. Six apps from the likes of barre3, Calm, Echelon, Fitplan, Jillian Michaels Fitness and obé Fitness can now be launched in the comfort of your living room (or kitchen or wherever), bringing more than 5,000 hours of free wellness content in more than 250 videos.

"As our community grapples with unprecedented disruptions to their daily routines, it is important for homebound consumers to have access to free high-quality health and wellness offerings," Salek Brodsky, Vice President of Strategic Partnerships and Business Development for Samsung Electronics, said in a press release. "Our partnership with these premium brands redefines the boundaries of what free streaming services can provide, and we look forward to enhancing these offerings by bringing a full Samsung Health experience to our TVs later this year."

The premium health and wellness apps will become part of the larger Samsung Health ecosystem later this year, Samsung says.

Availability of the apps varies a little bit depending on platform and location. Here's how that breaks down:

After stripping off the bezels from its TVs , Samsung seems to have set its eyes on ripping away their power cords. The company confirmed at CES 2020 that it's working on a truly wireless TV at its labs, though it claims the product is not yet ready for primetime.

As reported by the Yonhap News Agency , the president of Samsung's Visual Display division — Hang Jong-hee — told reporters at a showcase before CES 2020 that his company had already developed a TV capable of working wirelessly. However, he noted that the TV was not going to be on the stage at the tech conference because "to show that product here, [Samsung would] also have to do some construction work on the walls."

That's certainly a weird reason not to show off a product, but as he later clarifies, the power efficiency achieved by the tech at this stage may not be enough to offer a stable source of power to the TV, and the walls or other devices in the vicinity could interfere with the power transfer.

Wireless power transfer currently shows poor power efficiency to turn on the TV. If we launch the product today, consumers have to find their own ways to solve that power issue.

Jong-hee's comments also suggest Samsung is eschewing the magnetic induction tech that's usually found on smartphone chargers for magnetic resonance. The advantage of the latter phenomenon is that the receiving device does not need to be placed on a charging pad, and that power is delivered truly wirelessly. According to the Samsung exec, the company's tech can wirelessly power a TV two meters away.

He didn't say when the company would finally fill us in on the cordless future it has in store for us, but given that the Samsung exec is already willing to talk to the media about it, we're hoping it'll be sooner rather than later.

If there's anything you come to CES for, it's the televisions. And if there's anyone's TVs you come to CES for, it's Samsung. And the Korean manufacturer has brought it in 2020.

The name of the game this year — again — is 8K resolution. While you're probably still trying to watch as much 4K content as you can — and that's still a bigger struggle than we'd like it to be — the industry has been moving on for a few years now with the next-generation resolution, because that's what it does.

And Samsung isn't just focused on the resolution itself. That's just math, after all. It's also making it look even better on screen, as well as improving the overall design so that you've got more than just a flat panel in your home.

Bezels are doing their best to disappear this year, too. Or at least they're about as minimal as they can be at this point, and it's pretty incredible to see.

So let's dive into what Samsung's brought us at CES 2020.

Samsung 2020 QLED 8K TV and MicroLED

An 8K TV in and of itself isn't really new. But they're getting ridiculously cool. The new QLED line from Samsung in 2020 is headed up by the Q950. It's Tizen-based, of course, which is the semi-open-source operating system the company has been using for years. (That's in contrast to things like webOS from LG, or Android TV, or Roku TV.)

There's also plenty of AI baked in — because what doesn't have AI baked in at this point. And that'll do things like automatically adjust brightness and contrast based on the ambient light in the room. It'll also do its own thing to compress the video so that you're not sucking as much bandwidth as you might otherwise. (And Samsung says it's working directly with Amazon on this to scale up standard-definition content in Prime Video to 4K.)

But what you'll absolutely notice is the near lack of a bezel. Samsung says there's a nearly 99 percent screen-to-body ratio, which essentially makes the bezel disappear. And the TV itself is 15mm thick and has a completely flat back, so it'll fit flush against a wall.

And somehow Samsung has managed to cram killer audio into the Q950 as well. It's got speakers on each side of the display, and woofers in the back for virtual 5.1 audio. Will that be better than external speakers? Perhaps not. But it's still an incredible feat in a device that's less than 2 centimeters thick.

And 2020's 8K TVs are making use of MicroLED panels across the board, from the 75-inch size all the way up to a monstrous 150 inches. That's allowing for the thinness and minuscule bezels. And it just looks good .

The Sero goes vertical

But what's CES without some ridiculous product that you'll never actually buy yourself? This year for Samsung that's The Sero. It's already been released in South Korea and is going global in 2020.

The gist? It goes vertical in conjunction with your smartphone. So whether you're watching video in the usual landscape orientation, or someone's vertical vlog, the TV will adapt to that presentation. It's a crazy idea, and even crazier to actually see implemented.

Crazy good? Crazy bad? Crazy expensive? All three, most likely.

Some folks might need a TV that straddles the line between a big screen and smaller screen. The 40-inch is that bridge, and that specific size is actually pretty hard to come by since most brands go straight from 32 to 43 inches. Samsung has announced that it's not just in support of HDR 10+ content — it's supporting it in 8K resolution.

What's that mean for you? Not a whole lot. You almost certainly don't have an 8K television yet. And if you do, there's not a whole lot of 8K content that you can watch on it. No, this is more about a leading electronics manufacturer supporting the latest electronics standards. And that's no small thing. It's just not really a consumer-level thing yet.

With this announcement, Samsung has established itself as the leader of the HDR (High Dynamic Range) specification industry. CHILI, The Explorers and MEGOGO – three key OTT (Over-the-top) service providers in Europe – will adopt 8K HDR10+ along with its support for 4K HDR10+.

HDR10+ technology optimizes brightness and maximizes the contrast ratio, making bright areas brighter and dark areas darker. The feature is available on all UHD TV and 2019 8K TV models, including Samsung's lineup of QLED TVs.

Aside from the aforementioned OTT streaming services, several other industry-leading content partners are collaborating with Samsung. Rakuten TV, Deutsche Telekom's Magenta TV and Videociety are all expected to adopt HDR10+ support for its respective VOD services between Q4 2019 and Q1 2020. Also, Molotov, the first French OTT streaming service to offer live and on-demand TV channels all in one place, is also considering to adopt HDR10+. The growing list of premiere content partners is a testament to the industry's commitment to the best viewing experience possible for consumers.

HDR10+ content availability continues to expand. Recent announcements from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment debuting HDR10+ on UHD Blu-ray with "The Secret Life of Pets 2" and "Godzilla: King of the Monsters", respectively, add to the UHD Blu-ray discs already released from Twentieth Century Fox and others.

Since Samsung began the HDR10+ logo certification program with Panasonic and 20th Century Fox last year, 81 companies have joined the program, boosting the program's influence in the industry. Samsung has also strengthened its effort with the new opening of an HDR10+ center in China last December, following Korea, Japan and the U.S. With TV manufacturers such as Hisense obtaining HDR10+ certification in China, the HDR10+ alliance is expected to expand even further.

Along with HDR10+ certifications of existing TVs and smartphone products, Samsung is working to implement the program for its B2B products. For example, micro LED models such as The Wall Pro and The Wall Lux have been HDR10+ certified, and the company plans to expand the ecosystem to include Samsung's line of LED products.

Samsung is putting Apple's iTunes on its televisions. Or is it that apple is putting iTunes on Samsung's 2019 televisions?

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. announced today it will offer iTunes Movies and TV Shows and Apple AirPlay 2 support on 2019 Samsung Smart TV models beginning this spring. Support on 2018 Samsung Smart TVs will be made available via firmware update. In an industry first, a new iTunes Movies and TV Shows app will debut only on Samsung Smart TVs in more than 100 countries. AirPlay 2 support will be available on Samsung Smart TVs in 190 countries worldwide.

For those who prefer bullet points, here's what you need to know:

So let's recap: The two companies that have been at war over smartphones for centuries have kissed and made up on the television side. You'll be able to rent and buy and stream from iTunes straight into a Samsung TV in more than 100 countries. And AirPlay 2 — the long-awaited update to AirPlay — will allow you to easily watch and listen to all kinds of things from an iPhone or iPad or Mac. Basically if you can see it on the screen of one of those devices, you'll be able to do it on one of Samsung's TVs.

And iTunes remains one of the most comprehensive libraries for video and content in 4K with HDR. Of course, Samsung's TVs don't yet support Dolby Vision — the HDR standard you want if you can get it — but that's another thing for another time.

And for a little added irony, consider that iTunes will be running atop a Tizen-based platform, which powers Samsung's smartwatches as well. It's openy, and we're not talking just bolted on — Samsung's 2019 televisions will be based on Tizen 5.0. (The 2018 models are on Tizen 4.0.) This is active development, folks.
