I remember back in 2010 when TLC debuted its newest show about a plural family trying to blaze their own path through a world that didn’t recognize their values and beliefs. Now it’s 2025 and fans are eagerly awaiting the return of the second half of Sister Wives season 19. As we collectively wonder what the future holds for the series now that patriarch Kody Brown has lost three of his four wives, I have to think that it’s time to bring the original series to an end so that a new spinoff can take flight.

There was a time, long before the 90 Day Fiance universe, when TLC had some of the buzziest shows on television. Fans tuned in to TLC to watch shows like Jon and Kate Plus 8 and 19 Kids and Counting (completely unaware of the strife happening behind the scenes on both shows). Over on HBO, Emmy-nominated Big Love, a show about a fictional polygamist family, was getting rave reviews during its 2006-2011 run, so it wasn’t surprising in the age of reality television that a TV show about a real family living the plural lifestyle would eventually come along, and TLC became its home.

I remember watching the Sister Wives pilot episode in 2010. It was one of those buzzy, must-watch TV moments that left everyone talking the next day about the man with three — soon to be four — wives and their giant family. The early episodes followed the Brown family as they packed their belongings in the dead of night to flee Utah, where they were facing persecution for their lifestyle. Despite the danger of openly living in plural marriages, it wasn’t long before the Brown family — Kody, Meri, Christine, Janelle and newcomer (but not yet wife) Robyn — became household names.

19 seasons later, fans are still tuning in to see what’s going on with the Brown family, but things have changed a great deal. Christine was the first to leave Kody; she’s now married to David Wooley. Fans were able to see her split from Kody as well as her courtship and eventual marriage to her new beau. Janelle soon followed, and Meri was the last to leave. Many of the Brown children are now parents of their own.

It hasn’t been easy watching the Brown family fall apart, buy many people probably saw it coming. The family dynamic has shifted to the point that many of the kids and former wives have no connection to other members of the family; Christine and Janelle remain close to each other and their kids are also close, but few of the kids have contact with Meri, Robyn or even Kody.

Fans have started to wonder whether season 19 marks the end of the series given that it has been such a long season, with 20 episodes already aired and the promise of more to come in the spring. Given that the family now lives all over the country, with Robyn and Kody in Arizona, Christine and Meri in Utah and Janelle in North Carolina, it seems like the original show has run its course.

That’s not to say that there aren’t stories yet to be told. That’s why a spinoff would be a great way to refresh the franchise and move it in a new direction. The most obvious choice when it comes to spinoffs is to have a new show that follows the exploits of Janelle and Christine. Though they live on opposite sides of the country these days, they are still friends and their kids are close, and it’s highly likely that they will continue to see each other during holiday celebrations and special occasions like birthdays and weddings.

Following Christine’s vacation rental business and Janelle’s adventures opening a flower field, Taeda Farms, on the 156-acre property she bought with her daughter Madison and Madison’s husband, Caleb Brush, would be fun. Both women have embarked on new adventures, reinventing themselves after living in a plural family for so long, and seeing them embrace their new lives would be a very natural continuation of the story.

What I’d really love to see is a whole series dedicated to the next generation of the Brown family. Madison, aka Maddie, had a podcast that ran from November 2024 to January 2025 where she shared insight into her family’s dynamics. Though short-lived, the podcast revealed there are stories to tell within the family and it would be interesting to see things from the now-adult Brown kids’ perspective, with perhaps only occasional appearances from their parents.

Though the future of Sister Wives remains unclear at this point, there’s no denying fans would love to see more from the Brown family, though perhaps with a different lens. A spinoff would give the show a refresh while perhaps also giving new voices to the next generation of the family who grew up before the audience’s eyes.

Sister Wives season 19 reached its mid-season finale on February 2 after rolling out the first 20 episodes of the season. Now fans are wondering when Sister Wives will return with new episodes? Well, we have everything you need to know right here.

As we predicted, with The Baldwins ending on April 13, TLC has officially announced Sister Wives is returning on Sunday, April 20, at 10 pm ET/PT. It looks like there are five remaining episodes followed by four Tell-Alls. Describing the Tell-Alls TLC states, "The family sits down individually with host Sukanya Krishnan in four one-on-one episodes to discuss the challenges they have faced over the past year and some of the most talked about moments of the season.

The mid-season finale left things at an interesting point for the family. Kody Brown and his remaining wife, Robyn, are coming to terms with living in a monogamous relationship. Robyn's daughter Aurora asked Kody to be part of her baptism ceremony, which left her parents with tears of joy.

Newly married Christine and her husband David accompanied Christine's former sister wife Janelle on a cross-country trip from Arizona to North Carolina after Janelle and her kids purchased land for a flower farm. They stopped in New Orleans, where Janelle had her first shot of alcohol in a toast to starting her new life. And in Utah, Meri was trying to decide whether her destiny is to live in the bed & breakfast or venture out and find her place in the world.

There was also the ongoing effort to sell the family's property at Coyote Pass. The family originally moved to Flagstaff to build their dream homes at Coyote Pass, but as the Brown family fell apart the land became a sad reminder of the past.

After Sister Wives season 18 saw members of the Brown family go their separate ways, their story continues in Sister Wives season 19.

The supersized season was split into two halves, with the second half set to premiere April 20.

Sister Wives is the story of a plural family comprised of Kody Brown, his first wife Meri, his second wife Janelle, his third wife Christine, his fourth wife Robyn and their combined 18 children.

Over the years, Sister Wives has explored the family's move to Las Vegas as they fled the laws against polygamy in their original Utah home. From Las Vegas, the family moved to Flagstaff, Ariz., to build their dream compound, but trouble started brewing in the marriages as COVID-19 struck and the pandemic changed how the family interacted.

While the older kids started going to college, moving away, getting married and having babies, Kody's relationships with his wives started deteriorating. Christine was the first wife to leave him in November 2021. Janelle followed in December 2022, followed by Meri in January 2023, leaving Kody and Robyn as the sole couple remaining.

After the events of the super-sized Sister Wives season 18, the Brown family looks much different now than it ever has before. Kody Brown is now in a monogamous relationship with Robyn, Janelle is exploring single life, Christine is newly married and Meri recently announced that she's dating someone. With all that change, will there be a Sister Wives season 19?

TLC hasn't offered any details (or clues) about a new season of the long-running reality series that brought plural marriage out of the shadows and into the spotlight when it debuted in 2010. 

However, it's being widely reported that a 19th season is on the horizon after Christine hinted at what's coming up "next season" in a November 2023 interview. Many outlets have taken this statement to not only mean that the show will have a season 19, but that filming may already be taking place. 

It's worth noting that the events of season 18, which started airing in fall 2023, were actually filmed in late fall 2022 through the New Year and into 2023. Fans of the show were already aware that Christine had separated from Kody and was trying to figure out holiday plans, meanwhile Janelle left Kody in December 2022 and Meri left Kody in early 2023. Given the timing of Christine's statement, it makes sense that the show would already be filming.

As far as what Sister Wives season 19 might look like given that three of Kody's former wives are now living their own lives, well, the bonus Talk Back, Look Back and Christine's Wedding episodes offer a glimpse of how things might play out. Instead of filming together, interviews and reactions were mostly done separately save for Kody and Robyn, who filmed together. In the past, each wife had her own camera crew following her around so that doesn't have to change. 

In terms of what kinds of content fans would see in a new season, there will still be holidays, birthdays and family gatherings where everyone gets together. These are the moments fans will want to see as the once unified plural family moves forward as a blended family. Christine is married now, Meri recently announced that she's dating and Janelle is off living her best life as a single woman. There are plenty of opportunities to follow the wives separately and still have lots of great content. 

We're patiently awaiting official word on Sister Wives season 19 from TLC, but until then we're thinking about all of the things we'd like to see in a new season.

Sister Wives is the story of a plural family comprised of Kody Brown, his first wife Meri, his second wife Janelle, his third wife Christine, his fourth wife Robyn and their combined 18 children. 

Over the years, Sister Wives explored the family's move to Las Vegas as they fled the laws against polygamy in their original Utah home. From Las Vegas, the family moved to Flagstaff, Ariz., to build their dream compound, but trouble started brewing in the marriages as COVID-19 struck and the pandemic changed how the family interacted. 

While the older kids started going to college, moving away, getting married and having babies, Kody's relationships with his wives started deteriorating. Christine was the first wife to leave him in November 2021. Janelle followed in December 2022, followed by Meri in January 2023, leaving Kody and Robyn as the sole couple remaining.

How to watch Sister Wives season 18

Sister Wives season 18 airs in the US on TLC. TLC is usually included in most cable packages and on streaming services like Fubo, Sling TV, Hulu with Live TV and YouTube TV. Episodes can also be streamed  on Discovery Plus and Max. 

Fans have been paying close attention to Sister Wives season 18 as the Brown family deals with big changes to the family's plural marriages. Patriarch Kody has a long history of putting his foot in his mouth, but this time he went a bit too far. 

In this week's new episode, Janelle and Kody meet for the first time since their big fight before Christmas. Janelle is still upset at what happened between them, but what hurts her even more is the fact that Kody didn't even reach out to their kids over the holidays. Kody and the sons he shares with Janelle have been feuding for a while, but Kody didn't even bother reaching out to their daughter Savanah. 

Janelle expresses her frustration with Kody, admitting that she's not sure she wants to be around him anymore. This leads Kody to say in a confessional that Janelle was only really attracted to him for his looks, anyway: "I think she thinks I'm hot. I've got nice pecs and nice six pack abs. But that's all she's interested in."

While Kody's behavior has been shocking — and maddening — this season, it's not exactly surprising given that one of the chief complaints from the rest of his family is that Kody favors his fourth wife, Robyn, and her family. Fans will recall that during season 18's Christmas episode, Kody gave Robyn's kids a treasure trove of presents — including miniature motor bikes. 

Since the show was filmed in late 2022 and early 2023, fans already know that Kody's wives Christine, Janelle and Meri end up leaving him, but now they're able to watch what happened in the days leading up to the splits.

At this point, Janelle hasn't decided whether she's going to leave Kody but she's definitely asking herself the question of whether plural marriage is the right choice for her at this stage in her life.

From Angela's behavior on 90 Day: Last Resort to fans begging TLC reality stars like Kimberly and Usman to not get married, you never really know what's going to happen. However, when it comes to Kody Brown and Sister Wives season 18, well, fans are pretty used to him putting his foot in his mouth. This time it's a doozy.

Sister Wives season 18 was filmed in fall 2022, about a year after Kody's third wife Christine left him in November 2021. In the season 18 premiere, Kody acknowledged that he's been an "ogre" lately because of all the stress and upheaval in his life. 

Evidently, though, he's still harboring a lot of anger toward his ex-wife and during a meeting with Christine to plan for the holidays, his anger came to the fore. He had no problem expressing his feelings in a confessional: "I want to spend some time hating her."

While some fans attacked Kody, others celebrated Christine and how she handled herself during her dinner with Kody, noting that she was "glowing" and happy and relaxed. There's no question that she's out there living her best life after her divorce and it absolutely shows as she laughs at Kody's drama. 

Kody also outlined how "overwhelming" his battle with COVID-19 was and fans appreciate Christine's reaction to him. Fans also correctly point out that he filmed himself saying that it wasn't so bad.

If you tuned into the premiere of Sister Wives season 18, you might be wondering when the show was filmed. Let's break down what we know based on the clues from the August 20 season premiere. 

In "No Such Thing as a Free Lunch," Kody Brown and wives Meri, Janelle and Robyn are trying to figure out how to celebrate the upcoming holidays, especially given the departure of Kody's third wife, Christine. 

Given that at this point Christine has already left Kody and is living on her own, and with the holidays coming up, it is safe to assume that filming on Sister Wives season 18 took place in the fall of 2022. 

Christine left Kody in November 2021 after their marriage deteriorated beyond repair. The strain of the family's physical separation during COVID-19, concerns over Kody spending more time with "favorite" wife (Robyn) and the couple generally drifting apart are some of the main issues that led to the separation. 

Despite their plural marriage, Kody is only legally married to Robyn (Meri was his first wife, but Kody ended up divorcing Meri to legally marry Robyn so that he could adopt her children from her first marriage). When Christine left it was a matter of working out the details of how Kody would see the former couple's only minor daughter, Truely. (The couple shares a total of six children, with five over the age of 18: Aspyn, Mykelti, Paedon, Gwendlyn and Ysabel)

Fall 2022 is a very interesting period of time for the show and for the Brown family. Though some time has passed since Christine's departure, Kody is still very angry about their separation. He acknowledged early on in the season premiere that he has been "an ogre," but toward the end of the episode he admits, "I want to spend some time hating [Christine]."

Kody's anger toward Christine, and the ongoing issues that led to Christine's departure from their plural marriage, eventually lead Janelle and Meri to leave, too. 

We already know that Janelle left Kody in December 2022 and Meri followed in January 2023, which means fans will have a bird's eye view of what happened in the Brown household leading up to their decisions to leave Kody in future episodes.
