Anthony Horowitz, the man behind Foyle's War and Magpie Murders, has teased his big new BBC1 drama, Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue.

Horowitz has become well-known for creating hugely engaging television dramas packed with twists, and he promises there's more of the same in the thriller set on a plane.

The plot sees a light aircraft carrying 10 passengers crash in the Mexican jungle — and nine of them survive. But when the remaining passengers start dying, they realise that someone wants them dead.

Horowitz says: "It often occurred to me that an airplane is a very interesting environment for a murder mystery. When you're sitting on a plane you could well find yourself next to a complete stranger for five, ten or fifteen hours. He or she may seem charming: a doctor, an entrepreneur, a teacher… or a murderer.

"And now let's imagine that the plane crashes into the jungle and you manage to survive. Suddenly your relationship with the other passengers becomes even more critical. You're in a completely hostile environment. You don’t have very much food or water. Everything is against you. And then, suddenly you realise that one of those complete strangers is a psychopathic killer. What do you do next? That was the start of the idea."

The six-part story, starting on BBC1 this Saturday and also available via BBC iPlayer, is told in flashback as the survivors fight against the heat, a shortage of supplies, and each other.

The setting becomes increasingly tense and claustrophobic until finally the identity of the killer and the truth are revealed.

Eric McCormack, David Ajala, Lydia Wilson, Jan Le, Adam Long, Siobhán McSweeney, Peter Gadiot, and Ólafur Dario Ólafsson are among the cast.

Talking about creating the characters, he continues: "Everyone had to have a story but I wanted to avoid anything that was too obvious.

"I think Lisa and Travis were the first to arrive. Everyone is talking about MAGA right now, often in a negative way so I decided to create two MAGA supporters who were actually sympathetic. I wanted one English character on board, so I created Sonja, the photographer working in charity, helping people trying to cross the border. Divisive politics and immigration are topics that are really relevant internationally right now."

He adds: "Everyone has a story to tell. Everyone has a secret to hide. That's how it works."

Meanwhile, the BBC is also making Marble Hall Murders, the third and final installment in Horowitz's murder mystery series, which started with Magpie Murders.

Lesley Manville will return as book editor turned sleuth Susan Ryeland.

Viewers are hoping Coldwater season 2 could be on its way to ITV, after the first series of the psychological thriller ended on a tantalising cliffhanger!

The show created by celebrated playwright David Ireland proved a hit with viewers after reaching our screens in September and many have wondered if we could be returning to the town of Coldwater one day.

The first series told the story of John (Andrew Lincoln) and his family, who moved from London to rural Scotland after a traumatic incident, only to find themselves caught in the clutches of his sinister new neighbour, Tommy (Ewen Bremner).

Despite his success writing for the theatre, this was Ireland's first TV thriller and he said he'd be open to doing a sequel...

"I'd never really written this kind of stuff before so I never even thought of a second series initially," he told us when we spoke to him in the summer of 2025.

"I couldn't even imagine how you set up for a second series, but as I got towards the end writing the last two episodes of the first series, I thought it would be good to keep this going if possible, because I do find the characters really fascinating. It would be great to keep them going for a few more seasons!"

So will there be a Coldwater season 2? Here's everything we know..

Will there be a Coldwater season 2?

David Ireland is keen to make more and the show's stars are also open to the idea of reprising their characters and returning to Coldwater...

"I would love for that to happen and for us to make some more," said Ewen Bremner, who played Tommy, when we spoke to him earlier this year.

Meanwhile Eve Myles, who played Tommy's wife Rebecca, also hinted that she'd be keen to continue the story if the opportunity arose.

"This was certainly a series that we all thoroughly enjoy doing," she explained. "It felt like a very different type of of drama that will hopefully take people by surprise and connect with people."

Coldwater season 2 plot

The finale of Coldwater season 1 was very open and after Tommy was finally unmasked as the man behind the murders of Angus and his father Nathan (plus how many others?) he escaped and went on the run.

His wife Rebecca (Eve Myles) had clearly been complicit in many of his crimes. She lied to the authorities after he fled, claiming she'd been living in fear of her husband, yet we're convinced she still loves him.

Indeed one of the final scenes of the series saw her watching John (Andrew Lincoln) menacingly while he attended a bible study group in her house.

It seems she might believe John is responsible for shedding light on Tommy's crimes and is planning revenge. Either way, we're sure Tommy is desperate to get back at the man who helped finally bring him down and if he is, we think Rebecca would help him.

We also saw Tommy's son, Cameron (Samuel Bottomley), calling him in the closing stages of the series, suggesting he still believes his father has been framed. Could he be persuaded to help his old man take revenge?

One person who didn't seem convinced about Rebecca's innocence was John's wife Fiona (Indira Varma), who could hold the key to revealing the truth about her.

Meanwhile, the murder of Coldwater sex worker Susie Bissett still remains unsolved several decades later. It's assumed Tommy knows something about that, but is it a case a second series could look at?

Coldwater season 2 cast

The first season of Coldwater was Andrew Lincoln's first British drama for nearly 15 years, so whether the star of AMC The Walking Dead would be keen go straight into a second series remains to be seen.

Having said that it would be possible to come back for a second series without his character. A sequel could simply focus on the hunt for Tommy, while maybe looking back at his past crimes?

Andrew Lincoln spent more than a decade playing a hero in hit US zombie drama The Walking Dead, but he’s more wet blanket than warrior in this intense potboiler. The six-parter tells the tale of John, a weak-willed stay-at-home dad who falls into the clutches of a man with some dark secrets when he moves with his wife and kids from London to the Scottish backwater of Coldwater, with Lincoln happily throwing himself under a bus as an unravelling lead. Yet it’s Ewen Bremner and Eve Myles who steal the show as his unsettling neighbours Tommy and Rebecca, the town’s malevolent power couple. Continues tomorrow and is available as a box set on ITVX now.

Rob and Rylan's Passage to India, BBC2, 9 pm

Watching Rylan Clark and Rob Rinder open their hearts and surround themselves in Italian culture in last year’s Rob and Rylan’s Grand Tour was unexpectedly affecting. This three-part follow-up, inspired by EM Forster’s 1924 novel A Passage to India, finds them in very different surroundings, but their odd-couple chemistry is still absolute dynamite, and their excitement and appreciation for the art they explore is palpable. Tonight’s clear highlight is the scene where they write and perform their own raps for a slightly bemused audience in a Delhi marketplace – maybe this time they’ll get a BRIT Award to go with their BAFTA! Freddie Flintoff’s Field of Dreams… Ultimate Test, BBC1, 8.15 pm

The former England captain’s aim to turn cricket in this country from a pursuit of the privileged elite into a true game for the masses is an admirable one – and the success of Field of Dreams’ first two series suggests he’s on to something. But his new plan to start a grassroots league for young players is bringing fresh challenges. Central to the project are his new teams, but as the girls in Blackpool and boys in Bootle experience their own teething troubles, Freddie takes on the task of forming a third. Or, more accurately, rescuing historic Manchester club Newton Heath, which is on the brink of extinction and hasn’t had a kids’ team since the early noughties. Has he finally met his match?

M&S: Dress the Nation, ITV1, 6.55 pm

Vernon Kay and AJ Odudu are back to host a second series of the contest, offering amateur designers the chance to win a mentorship at high-street favourite M&S and have their designs sold in store. The nine hopefuls begin with a focus on womenswear, and their efforts are judged by M&S Director of Womenswear Maddy Evans, guest Jade Jagger and, importantly, store customers themselves. Series 1 winner David Olaniyi’s limited collection of occasionwear was launched in October 2024, proving dreams do come materially true with this show.

They say 'a mother’s love knows no bounds' and that theory is put to the test, this week, when one devoted matriarch wages war on her son’s suspicious new flame in Prime Video’s The Girlfriend.

Based on Michelle Frances' novel of the same name, the six-part psychological thriller stars Golden Globe winner Robin Wright - best known for playing Jenny in classic movie Forrest Gump and, more recently, Claire in Netflix’s political thriller House of Cards - as Laura, a gallery owner who seems to have it all: a glittering career, loving husband Howard (Gangs of London’s Waleed Zuaiter), and precious son, Daniel (The Road Trip’s Laurie Davidson), who’s a doctor. Laura’s seemingly perfect world is turned upside down, however, when Daniel brings home Cherry (House of the Dragon’s Olivia Cooke).

After an awkward first meeting, Laura’s convinced Cherry isn’t who she says she is and is determined to prove it. Although no one else can see what she sees, Laura refuses to watch Daniel be deceived and will stop at nothing to protect him.

Here, Robin - who also directs - and Olivia, tell us more…

Can you talk us through your characters and why they're immediately wary of each other?

Olivia: "Cherry’s a working class woman from London who has a lot of ambition, which is reflected in who she dates. When Cherry goes on the defensive, she tells little white lies - or even big ones - about who she is and where she's from, which soon arouses suspicion in Laura."

Robin: "There's always that ongoing battle as a mother that nobody's ever going to be good enough for your son and, as Laura’s suspicions about Cherry start to increase, she just wants to get to the bottom of things. But is Cherry a manipulative social climber? Or is Laura just a paranoid, possessive mum?"

Each episode explores events from both Cherry and Laura’s point of view of how things happened. What does this dynamic add to the show?

Robin: "It’s all a matter of perspective, with the whole show questioning whose perspective is the most reliable. For instance, was Laura rolling her eyes at Cherry? Or was she just looking at a cobweb on the ceiling? Often there are subtle nuances and, as both sides play out, it’s the audience who gets to decide who’s in the wrong. Viewers will switch from Cherry's team, to Laura's team, then back again. It’s more of a cat-and-cat thriller, than a cat-and-mouse thriller!"

Olivia: "That’s right. Getting to play all of those juicy nuances in someone else's point of view was really enticing to me - but I found it SO confusing doing the dual perspective, so I don't know how Robin managed to act and direct it! Once, we were filming these really intense scenes; Robin’s crying was so raw and emotional but then she’d just snap out of it and say: ‘…And cut! Right, we're gonna go into a mid-shot now, what lens are you using? Okay, let's go.’ We were astounded by her dexterity. It was incredible to witness."

Caught in the middle of this two-way tension is Daniel, played by The Road Trip’s Laurie Davidson. How does Daniel navigate having these two women in his life? And did Laurie enjoy having the two of you fighting over him?

Olivia: "Ha, ha! Laurie’s a deep thinker, especially when he's preparing for a scene, he needs quiet. So I don’t think having two dynamic, powerful women at his side, hissing, would bode well for him at all! For Daniel, all you want is for your family to love your partner as much as you do so the fact Laura and Cherry don’t get along is a huge point of contention for him. In the beginning, Laura and Cherry really do try, in their own way, to bond but it’s short-lived."

Robin: "In the perfect world, Cherry and Laura would have been BFFs, because they're very much alike in many ways - but it’s almost like you hate the thing that you are in other people. Daniel loves both women but he’s locked into this clutch his mum has over him… and Cherry is, slowly but surely, trying to pull him out of it!"

Robin, as a mother of two, can you relate to Laura [Robin has a daughter, Dylan Frances Penn, 34, and son, Hopper Jack Penn, 32]?

Robin: "With my son, I’m often like: ‘What are you doing? Where are you going? What's her name? What size dress is she? So I’ve asked him to let me know once he’s seen the show, am I too much like Laura? Am I THAT annoying? Because maybe I need to back off!’"

What was your most memorable or challenging scene of The Girlfriend to film?

Olivia: "On film sets, we try to control every single element, but you can’t control nature, which was interesting when we had to film some scenes on a yacht in the middle of the ocean."

Robin: "We had several boats around us - the safety boat, the camera boat, the crane boat - and our yacht was anchored, but it was spinning, so there were many times we got the safety boat in the shot and had to reshoot it. It was hell for the crew but we eventually got the scenes in the can."

Olivia: "When everything's going wrong, but you're still getting the shots, it’s adrenalising. However, like Cherry, I do get very seasick. So I'd taken lots of meds that morning because I thought: ‘I can't be the only one to be flat on my back for the whole day’. I've experienced seasickness plenty of times in my life, so I didn't need to act too much!"

Prime Video has added The Girlfriend, a new psychological thriller series starring Robin Wright and based on the bestselling debut novel by Michelle Frances.

The House of Cards star legend plays Laura, a woman with a glittering career, a loving husband, a beautiful home, and her precious son, Daniel (Laurie Davidson). She has it all. But then Daniel brings home his beautiful new girlfriend, Cherry (Olivia Cooke), and Laura grows convinced that she’s not all she seems.

The glossy trailer (below) hints that Laura and Cherry go to war, with Laura telling Daniel that he has to choose one of them!

Robin, who also directs, promises there are lots of twists to keep thriller fans hooked. "I’m thrilled to be directing and acting in this wildly delicious psychological thriller filled with plot twists and surprising character turns, and to be working with such talented actors, Olivia and Laurie, and an overall amazing cast and crew... so excited."

Laura believes her son is being manipulated by Cherry and she will stop at nothing to protect him. But is Cherry really a greedy social climber, or is Laura paranoid and possessive?

"The Girlfriend" was first published in 2017 and won rave reviews. Michelle Frances, who's gone on to write several more novels, has spoken about her excitement at having her work put on screen.

Netflix has just dropped The Killing Kind, a thriller starring Merlin actor Colin Morgan and based on the bestselling book of the same name by Jane Casey.

The streamer has added the series in the UK (it's available via Hulu in the US), which stars The Witcher's Emma Appleton as Ingrid Lewis, a top-flight barrister, while Colin plays her charismatic but dangerous former client John Webster, who she successfully defended when he was accused of harassment and stalking but who ended up ruining her life.

When Webster gets back in touch with Ingrid out of the blue to warn her that her life is in danger, her instinct is to ignore him after everything he's put her through.

But then tragedy strikes Ingrid’s charismatic mentor Belinda (Sara Powell), and an increasingly paranoid Ingrid starts to suspect foul play. But she is unsure who she can trust and whether, this time, John is hero or villain.

Colin Morgan said: "Getting the opportunity to explore a more dark and complex role with John Webster has been enlightening and such fun. Working with the brilliant Emma Appleton has already been such a highlight, along with the rest of the incredible cast. The story had me hooked from page one and I am looking forward to seeing it play out on screen.”

Emma added: "Ingrid defended John on stalking charges and got quite close to him but when she tried to leave the relationship, he made her life very hard work."

Originally on Paramount Plus, the drama later came to ITVX, and now Netflix viewers finally have a chance to discover it.

Is The Killing Kind worth watching?

Well, it's had a mixed reception from audiences, but if you're into your thrillers, then this has to be worth a watch. Or you could try the book, which was critically very well received, with the Daily Mail describing it as "creepily good" while the Sunday Times described it as "chilling".

Helen Baxendale is to star in The Dark, a major new ITV1 drama based on GR Halliday’s hit debut novel, "From the Shadows".

The Cold Feet actor will be joined by The Gold's Emun Elliott as parents Bethany and Barclay Adams, whose son has gone missing.

Their lives are further tipped upside down when Detective Monica (Laura Donnelly) arrives at their door again with a case linked to their son.

The makers tease: "When the body of a young man is found eerily staged in the idyllic Scottish wilderness, detective Monica Kennedy fears this is just the beginning of a terrifying campaign that will strike the heart of a rural community.

"As paranoia rises, suspicions and secrets are forced into the light, and the locals start to realise that there is a serial killer hidden amongst them.

"With her experience of dealing with the darkest of humanity, Monica Kennedy quickly becomes entangled in a heightened game of cat and mouse with a cunning killer. Only she can stop this monster before he claims any more victims. But when her own history creeps up on her, she begins to lose trust in her own judgement. Will it be her own actions that are the biggest risk to herself and her family?”

Mark Rowley (Trigger Point, Karen Pirie) plays Detective Connor Crawford. The Dark is being filmed in and around Glasgow.

People have been begging for a second season of popular Chris Pratt spy thriller The Terminal List, but while you wait we've got a prequel in the form of The Terminal List: Dark Wolf which premieres on Wednesday, August 27.

Set before the events of The Terminal List, Dark Wolf tells the story of one of the original show's major characters, Ben Edwards. Through the series we watch as he trains as a Navy SEAL before moving over to work for the CIA and getting involved with some dangerous missions.

Taylor Kitsch reprises his role as Edwards and we're also set to see Chris Pratt back as James Reece, before his big mission. The cast also includes Tom Hopper, Luke Hemsworth, Robert Wisdom and Dar Salim.

While the original series was based on a book, Dark Wolf isn't, so there's no telling what happens (except for where the series leads, since you've probably already seen The Terminal List).

Hostage, a brand-new political thriller on Netflix, sees Abigail Dalton (Suranne Jones) swept into a plot of kidnapping and blackmail that threatens her role as Prime Minister as she meets with the French President, Toussaint.

As the two women head into political battle, it appears the threat is far greater than each other. During the French President's visit to Downing Street, the pair become embroiled in a terrifying plot that could destroy everything they've worked so hard to build.

As Abigail's husband, Alex, is kidnapped, Toussaint finds herself blackmailed into a stalemate that leaves each head of state faltering.

Here's a recap of everything that happened in Hostage episode 5.

The final episode opens on a little girl arriving at Sylvie’s birthday party, back before Abigail was PM, but still a minister. Abigail receives a phone call and they ask her for codeword clearance. She’s put through to Belize where a situation is unfolding and they want to know whether to evacuate troops as they can’t get in touch with the defense secretary. They tell her she’s the most senior minister they can get hold of, so she has to make the call.

It’s explained that the Guatemalan army have taken Belize. They have the British troops ready to fly out, but Abigail needs to give clearance to leave the Belize civilians that helped them behind. This will risk them being executed. Abigail tells them to wait and stick to the original plan, but the woman on the phone says if they wait, they might not get anyone out at all. To this, she tells them to get their planes in the air.

In the present day, Abigail and Alex are escorted to a safe room where Sylvie is already waiting. She watches the news of the blast. Matheo arrives and watches the coverage while Abigail frantically washes the blood from her hands. Alex reassures her it's okay. Meanwhile, Shagan meets with his group, including Saskia, loading up cases of weapons. One of the team hugs Shagan and says the mission is complete. He tells them to dump the guns and they’ll meet at the plane, but he wants Saskia to stay with him.

Shagan receives a phone call. It’s General Livingston. He’s angry at what Shagan has done, destroying Downing Street without his authority. Shagan says he had to kill Abigail and the General tells him he missed and she’s still alive. He argues that Abigail was right next to the laptop, but the General tells him it was Toussaint that he killed. The General says he didn’t want Abigail dead, just out of the way, but Shagan has a different mission in mind. General Livingston instructs him to get out of the country now. As the General hangs up, the Cabinet arrives. He welcomes Dan, as Prime Minister.

Meanwhile, Saskia wants to know why Shagan said detonating the laptop was following orders, when it wasn’t. He ignores her and instead tells her to run automatic number plate recognition to find Abigail. At the safe house, Abigail sits with Matheo and he blames himself for Toussaint’s death. Abigail tells him it’s not his fault and it was actually her that was supposed to be the target. Abigail watches the latest news with Dan declaring a state of emergency across the country, announcing Toussaint’s death, announcing his role as interim Prime Minister and revealing that General Livingston and his troops will be deployed to the streets to manage civil unrest.

At Downing Street, injured people are still being treated. The troops arrive and insist the press evacuate to a designated safe zone. Zadie asks where they’re being taken, but they won’t tell her. Abigail rings Ayesha and tells her it’s a coup. She wants her to gather the team and Kofi will know where to find her. Abigail tells Alex and Sylvie they need to go somewhere else, away from her, and she’s going to stay. Matheo offers his friend’s place, where he’s also heading, outside of London. As they head off in the car, Alex tells Abigail to be careful and make them pay.

Meanwhile, Kofi is walking through the streets of London as troops descend. He meets Ayesha, Zadie and Tristan and they enter the underground safe house. Inside, Abigail is relieved to see her team. Meanwhile, Matheo, Sylvie and Alex arrive at Matheo’s friend’s house, an enormous manor. The guard with them tells them to lay low and keep off the grid. Kofi reveals he’s run Shagan through MI6 and Interpol and has found nothing. But, then he searched the MOD files and found Captain John Michael Shagan from the same 3rd Battalion as Saskia. Abigail remembers seeing him at Downing Street right before the blast. Zadie says she also recognises him and asks Tristan to pull up the footage from Attaf’s vigil. They see him, dressed as police.

In Shagan’s report, it’s revealed that he was in Belize to train troops as a colour sergeant. He was involved in the mass evacuation and was medically downgraded due to mental health and depression. Abigail reveals she was junior minister at the Foreign Office and made the call to extract the troops. Kofi tells her she did that to save British lives. But she says she left local people to die. Tristan argues it would’ve saved Shagan’s life, so why would he want to kill Abigail? Ayesha thinks it’s not even about the why, it’s about the how because all this organisation must’ve been paid for and dealt with by someone of authority. Kofi asks who deployed Shagan in Belize and they pull up the name.

With General Livingston, a member of the Cabinet, Cathy, questions the violent tactics the troops are using on the streets, but Livingston defends it. She argues that it’s not a conflict situation and they should be worried about the press coverage, to which Livingston reveals he’s executed plans to make sure there’s a 24-hour media blackout. Dan interrupts to say they have the visitor log for Downing Street with Matheo entering 10 minutes before the bomb was detonated. He’s got the Met looking for him. Abigail calls Cathy on an unknown number. She tells her Livingston is behind it all and she wants Cathy to help her get into the Ministry of Defence.

At the large manor house, Alex and Sylvie wait. Alex asks Sylvie to make some food to distract Matheo from what’s happened. Outside, Saskia is waiting with Shagan. Saskia hesitates to say she’s found the house, but Shagan says Abigail discarded their battalion and Saskia is worth more than that and that now, they must end it. In London, Cathy is arguing with the guard to let Abigail and her team in as they arrive. He says he can’t do that until he gets authorization from the General, but Abigail argues that she knows who killed Toussaint and why. He lets them in.

As Abigail enters, General Livingston is angry to see her. She recites the name Captain John Michael Shagan and asks him if he knows the name. Dan comes to find out what’s going on and Cathy tells him to hear what Abigail has to say. Livingston denies knowing Shagan, but she argues he was Shagan’s commanding officer in Belize, so should remember him. Kofi and Abigail tell everyone that Shagan is behind the kidnapping, the civil unrest and the bomb detonating in Downing Street, killing Toussaint. And that it was all orchestrated by General Livingston.

In response, Livingston says Abigail cut the military budgets and left the whole country exposed and that everyone needs protecting. He tells her they need protecting from her. He instructs his troops to remove her and Kofi stands them down. She tells Dan that General Livingston will return the country back to him safe and sound and he’ll reward him with an increase in military budget, enough to reverse Abigail’s cuts and exactly what he wanted.

She calls Livingston a traitor and he argues that he’s a patriot. To this, Abigail says he gave the order to bomb Downing Street and killed an ally. He denies it. Now irate, he says if he wanted to kill her, he wouldn’t put a bomb in a laptop. To this, Dan says no-one has told him about a laptop. Dan instructs the troops to put General Livingston in custody. But, he tells Abigail before he goes, that she doesn’t know what people will sacrifice to keep the nation safe. She tells him not to talk to her about sacrifice.

Back at the house, the security guard hears a noise upstairs and goes to investigate. As she heads one way, a figure can be seen walking. There’s a window open in one of the bedrooms and as she shuts it, Saskia comes up behind her and they fight. Outside, Shagan takes out another security guard. Saskia strangles the one inside to death. She communicates to Shagan that she’s got them down and he tells her they’re in the kitchen, but he can’t see Abigail. Saskia heads downstairs with a gun. In the kitchen, Matheo and Sylvie are making pasta. When he turns round, Saskia is holding a gun up to him and Shagan tells her to kill them if she has to. He picks up a knife and heads to look for Abigail. Matheo asks Saskia how she could murder Toussaint and tears stream down her face as she continues to hold the gun at them.

Hostage ending explained

Alex is stoking the fire as Shagan walks around the grounds searching for Abigail. Alex spots him as he enters the room. Shagan tells him to drop the poker and asks where Abigail is. He tells her she’s not there and that he missed again. He calls Saskia on his phone and tells her to put Sylvie on. He hears her over loudspeaker and drops the poker. Meanwhile, Dan tells Abigail that the emergency powers have been halted and that the no confidence motion is now void. He tells her, as Prime Minister, she should make an address. Ayesha enters and hands Abigail a phone with Alex on the line. But, it’s not Alex. It’s Shagan. He tells her he’s got Alex and Slyvie and tells her to come alone. If she doesn’t, he’ll kill them both.

Matheo tries to talk Saskia down. He tells her Shagan is only in control if she lets him be, but she can still save the situation and herself. She tells him she’s in control and he tells her he loved her. Shagan tells her Abigail is on the way. She tells them to sit on the floor and behind his back, Matheo gets his phone out. Sylvie wants to know what’s going to happen to her mum and she tells her she didn’t save Alex when she could’ve and now because of the choices she made, they’re all there.

As Alex and Shagan sit across from each other, Alex notes where the poker still lays on the ground. He asks Shagan what he meant by telling him he had a daughter, too. He asks how he lost her and Shagan tells him that whatever Alex says, he won’t be distracted long enough for Alex to grab the poker. He asks Alex if he’s ever killed anyone and Alex says he shot one of his men. Shagan stands up and takes the poker. He looks outside as Abigail arrives. Shagan tells Saskia to wait for his signal. To this, Matheo calls 999 behind his back.

Meanwhile, Matheo starts to tell Saskia they’re being held hostage to which she asks to see his hands. As he reveals he’s on the phone to 999, she lunges for it and he smacks the gun out of her hand. They fight and Matheo tells Sylvie to run. She picks up the gun as she goes. Saskia strangles Matheo and tells him to fight back, but he won’t. She tells him if he knew what she was like, he wouldn’t have wanted her and he tells her she’s wrong. She lets him go. On the phone, an armed unit will be sent if he taps the keypad to acknowledge it. She hands him the phone and lets him respond, leaving the room.

As Abigail enters, Shagan calls for her to come to the room they’re in. He immediately holds the knife to her. She says they made a deal and he needs to let her family go first. Sylvie is looking for them. Abigail tells him she knows it’s all about Belize. As Shagan gets angry about the deaths of the local people that helped them, Alex asks what his daughter was called. Shagan reveals she wasn’t even born yet as his pregnant fiancée was a local translator, left behind by Abigail’s call. She was shot and they both died. He tells her he’s happy the bomb didn’t kill her because he wants to gut her the way she gutted him. Again, she asks for him to release her family first.

Outside, the police arrive. Shagan tells Abigail she broke her word, but she tells him she didn't. While distracted, Alex runs at Shagan and grabs him. Abigail shouts for help. Shagan slices at Alex’s front as Sylvie enters the room with the gun. Abigail and Alex plead with her not to do it. Abigail tells her to put the gun down as the police are coming.

To this, Shagan begins to tell Sylvie to pull the trigger slowly or she’ll miss. He tells her not to miss, getting inside her head. The police enter the house, but they haven't found the room yet, and Abigail again pleads with Sylvie not to do anything stupid. Shagan taunts Sylvie and tells her if she’d acted sooner, her grandad would still be alive. As Sylvie gets upset, Abigail tells her he’s trying to get into her head. Shagan tells her he cruelly put an end to her grandad's life and Sylvie shoots him dead. Just as she shoots, the police enter and they're all taken down. Sylvie is arrested and taken away.

Three months later, Abigail is at Downing Street. Her phone rings and she says she’s on her way down. Alex and Sylvie are there and she hugs him and asks Sylvie if they’re sure about what they’re going to do. They agree. Abigail heads downstairs and passes a portrait of Toussaint now hanging on the wall.

Ayesha tells her the press are ready for her and she takes Kofi, Tristan and Zadie with her. She stands at the podium and repeats Toussaint’s speech about providing the truth to the country and not listening to the wrong people and making the wrong decisions. She pays homage to Toussaint and calls for a general election. She wants a radical new mandate, but wants to tell the general public about it with all the facts and then, they can decide if they still want her.

Here's a recap of everything that happened in Hostage episode 4.

The penultimate episode opens on several news reports on the growing protests across the country against Abigail and the NHS crisis. The protests want Abigail out of office and say she’s been distracted by saving her husband. The protests are violent with fights breaking out, riot police and fires burning. The Home Secretary is being driven through the streets at night and comes across a protest led by the masked gunman in civilian clothing. They swarm his car, stopping him from escaping. They smash the windows and drag him out of the car, beating him violently on the floor as they chant: “Dalton out!”

Meanwhile, Abigail is at the mortuary to identify her father’s body. She cries and apologises to him. Sylvie helps her pack away his things. Abigail tells Ayesha that she wants to stay at the hospital for a while, but Ayesha tells her the Home Secretary has been attacked. At a Cabinet meeting, the MPs discuss what has happened and tell Abigail the Home Secretary has a bleed on the brain. Dan argues that order has gone and the public fear they’re being put at risk because Abigail won’t resign. Another MP argues that Abigail is protected, but no one else is. Even Dan says that while Abigail has recovered her husband, the country has suffered. He tells her the Cabinet all agree that she should step down.

Abigail tells them they don’t know what they’re dealing with and that many things are unresolved, like who the men were that posed as police at Attaf’s vigil. She tells them all that everything they’re doing is to force her out like kidnapping Alex, blackmailing Toussaint, and, she admits, she thinks they murdered her father. She calls them terrorists and says they can’t let them win. Again, she refuses to go. The other MPs say they support Dan for interim PM. Abigail says to Dan if they want her to leave, she’ll have to be dragged out.

After, Ayesha shows Abigail the news as reports are now circulating with the video of Toussaint and her stepson, Matheo, in bed together. Abigail says she needs the car and Ayesha tells her Alex will be arriving soon, but Abigail says she’ll be there. Meanwhile, Matheo wakes up with the press gathering outside his home. He has multiple messages and missed calls. Matheo reads the news and packs a bag, escaping out onto the roof. The masked gunman follows him when he reaches the street below.

Elsewhere, Toussaint arrives to find her husband, Elias, who has gathered his team. He wants to leave and asks why she doesn’t have her luggage, to which Toussaint says she can’t go until she has answers from Pelletier. Elias says they need to save her campaign. He instructs his VP of Media, April, to ask his wife questions. She begins by asking if Toussaint ever bought Matheo gifts, paid for by her office. She answers, no. April then asks if Toussaint could be pregnant with Matheo’s child and she’s angry at Elias, saying she doesn’t want to play his games. She says the real story is that her and Abigail are being targeted and they should be finding those people. Elias isn’t interested.

Toussaint dismisses Elias’s team and he sarcastically suggests they form a coalition with Desmaris. Instead, she tells him it’s over between them and she wants a divorce. Elias tells her Matheo isn’t worth throwing everything away for and she says it’s not about him. He tells her she wouldn’t even be President if it wasn’t for him and she defends herself. Instead, she says, she’s going to find out the truth. Elias is angry as Toussaint walks away.

Kofi is gardening and listening to the news on the radio about Toussaint’s affair. Suddenly, Abigail arrives at his home. He wants to know what she’s doing there, so she tells him that MI5 has finished their report on him. She tells him she knows about the tax loophole he used that his friends at the Treasury told him about, which made him £72,000. She asks him what he spent it on, to which he reveals he used it on his wife, Titi’s, respite care when she was ill.

He says while it was the worst decision of his life, he’d do it again. Abigail asks for his help and explains that Dan Ogilvy is trying to replace her with the Cabinet’s support. She thinks there’s a link and explains the kidnappers were British. She wonders if they’re ex-military and with Dan being the Secretary of Defence, it could be him. She asks Kofi to look into it. He agrees. Abigail receives a call that Alex’s plane has just landed.

At an RAF base, Alex is getting a medical examination. Abigail and Sylvie arrive for an emotional reunion. Alex can see Abigail’s upset and asks what’s happened, to which Sylvie explains that her grandad died the previous night. He holds them and asks Sylvie if he can speak to Abigail alone. Abigail explains to Alex that there’ll be an autopsy, but she thinks it was the same people that kidnapped him that killed her father. She wants Alex to speak to the intelligence team as a man called her and said he knew of the rescue and that the country had to burn.

It cuts to the lead gunman still following Matheo. He watches him sit down on a bench and Matheo takes out Saskia’s laptop. He finds a file titled ‘Matheo’ and looks at surveillance photos, including the video of him with Toussaint. Meanwhile, Saskia is outside the French embassy as Toussaint arrives. She speaks through her earpiece to the gunman and tells him what’s happening. He tells her Toussaint is going to question Pelletier. Saskia says she won’t talk, but the gunman thinks Pelletier could hand over their names. He tells her she knows what she needs to do, to which she argues Pelletier's one of them. He tells her it’s an order and calls her Corporal. Saskia looks up at an open window to shoot from. Matheo continues on the move.

Inside the French embassy, Pelletier is being questioned, but she won't say anything. Toussaint enters and the woman stops the recording. She tells her Pelletier is not talking, apart from asking for coffee. Toussaint says she should get her a coffee then, dismissing her. Toussaint sits down alone with Pelletier and demands a name. Elsewhere, Abigail enters the situation room with Alex. General Livingston is there and wants to ask Alex some questions. Back with Pelletier, she still refuses to talk. Toussaint asks her when she started to betray the country, to which Pelletier replies that it’s Toussaint that is doing that. She calls her a fraud and says she doesn’t stand for anything anymore.

Alex listens to the phone call to Abigail. Again, he speaks of how Pelletier is one of many. Now, Pelletier is talking and angry. She tells Toussaint she won’t let her children grow up with corrupt politicians. When Livingston asks Alex if he recognises the voice, Alex is visibly upset. Abigail asks for a moment alone. Toussaint asks Pelletier for a name and says she won’t even be able to raise her kids if she doesn’t, or she’ll only see them in prison.

Meanwhile, Saskia readies her gun. Abigail asks Alex about the voice and he tells her it's the man who killed Jacobs, even though Alex begged him to stop and let them go. He explains that he told the man he had a daughter and the man replied: “So did I.” Again, Toussaint asks Pelletier for a name. This time, she says she will give her one if she can see her family. Toussaint and Pelletier leave with Pelletier in handcuffs, but Saskia has her in her line of sight. Saskia falters and shoots one of the bodyguards instead of Pelletier. Panicking, the rest of the bodyguards protect them and get them inside a car, driving off quickly. Again, Toussaint asks for a name.

At Downing Street, Abigail is on the phone demanding more time before they vote her out. Ayesha enters and tells her about the shots fired outside the French embassy. Toussaint is on her way there. She arrives to lots of press waiting outside and goes in to see Abigail. She immediately tells her of the attempted murder of Pelletier. She explains she’s sent her on a plane back to Paris, but not before she got a name from her, Shagan. She couldn't tell Toussaint who he was working for, but he didn’t want Abigail and Toussaint working together. She says she’ll give her the drugs, but they have to make a deal now before they lose control. Abigail says she’s losing support as they speak. Abigail says she’ll pull the negotiating team back in.

Toussaint answers a call from Matheo and he tells her about Saskia’s laptop and that she took surveillance photos of him before they even met. He says he needs to meet with her immediately to tell her more. But, Shagan is following him. At Downing Street, the deal is made and Abigail hands it to Zadie to get out immediately. She runs. Matheo arrives at Downing Street and Shagan looks through his many fake official badges using a press card to gain access. Abigail and Toussaint go out to speak to the press. She reveals they’ve signed an emergency NHS drug agreement for the supply of drugs, arriving in the next 24 hours. Ayesha leads Matheo up the stairs inside. Simon Kingsley, the reporter, wants to know what the French get in return, to which Toussaint replies nothing.

She reveals while she came seeking French guard on British soil, she was led to believe that’s what it would take for her to win the next election. But, she says she was listening to the wrong people and that she forgot who she was. Now, she wants to be truthful and she says the truth is that if Abigail is removed from office, the people targeting them will have won. Shagan moves through the crowd of press. Abigail pleads to anyone who has been violent to reconsider what they’re doing. As she speaks, Shagan reaches into his bag. He pulls out a camera and takes her photo. She says she wants to continue protecting her country and to continue with the agreement. They step back inside together.

Ayesha immediately brings Matheo to meet with them and tells Abigail that Kofi is on the phone. Toussaint tells Matheo she’s divorcing his father, so she can listen to herself. He shows her the laptop. Abigail speaks to Kofi who reveals he’s looked through the Ministry of Defence budget during Dan Ogilvy’s period, cutting spending, exactly as she asked. He can’t find any evidence it’s him behind this all. Ayesha interrupts to say the no-confidence ballot is being announced. Abigail tells Kofi to look for the name Shagan and find out what he can. He wishes her good luck.

Alex and Sylvie come to meet Abigail for the results of the ballot. Tristan listens on the phone. He stares at Abigail nervously. After, Abigail goes to Toussaint and reveals she lost the motion by 22 votes. She only has a few hours left in office. Toussaint apologises to her, but she still wants to find who’s doing this. Matheo reveals the laptop to Abigail. He explains while his girlfriend's name is Saskia Morgan, she said she’s not on social media. But, his friend found a deleted profile under Corporal Saskia Morgan, 3rd Battalion of the Highland Guards. They don’t know who she was messaging, but they have the messages instructing her to head to Abigail’s father’s hospital room.

Ayesha shows Abigail that the 3rd Battalion was shut down in the recent MOD cuts. But, the camera on the laptop is live and Shagan is watching. He starts to dial a code into his phone. Abigail asks Matheo why Saskia would leave the laptop behind. Shagan enters the code and detonates the bomb hidden inside the laptop. Toussaint pushes Matheo aside as the laptop explodes. The press and police officers scream outside and Alex and Sylvie run downstairs. Shagan simply stands there as the chaos unfolds.

Alex searches desperately for Abigail as Shagan walks calmly away. He finds Ayesha on the ground, but she doesn’t know where Abigail is. Alex finds her under rubble, unconscious. She’s still breathing and he manages to bring her round. The police enter Downing Street and start pulling out Matheo and Ayesha. Abigail climbs over to Toussaint, but she’s bleeding. Alex checks her pulse and she’s dead.

The episode opens with Abigail’s speech taking over the news. Pelletier arrives to meet a man who has landed by helicopter. At Downing Street, Tristan is instructing the team to distribute any calls. Zadie hands a message from the President of the United States to Kofi and Abigail heads into the House of Commons to give an emergency statement. She tells them the threat level of the UK has been upped to critical.

As she speaks, an MP shows Oliver something on his phone. Oliver asks Abigail to give way. He says she’s speaking of the national security of the British people, yet there’s a video on social media circulating of five-year-old Attaf Diwala. His mother took him to a 24-hour pharmacy to get medication for Attaf’s asthma, but it was closed as there was no medicine left. Attaf died in the street and Oliver shows her the video. Abigail stands and berates Oliver for using a child for his own political gain. She says she won’t resign because she will fix the drug crisis. Oliver stands and replies that she can risk her own husband’s life, but she’s also risking the entire country.

Elsewhere, Toussaint is playing online poker when Pelletier disturbs her. She tells Toussaint her husband is there. Elias enters and wants to know what the kidnappers are blackmailing her with. She tells him that it’s proof of a past relationship and she wants him to stand by her or she’ll lose the election. He wants to know who the man is. She tells him it was Matheo, his son. He takes a seat and asks her who else knows. She reveals she thinks Matheo’s girlfriend, Saskia, does. She tells him that Abigail doesn’t know. She says Abigail can help them find out who these people are and then they can cover up the truth.

Meanwhile, Abigail arrives home and Sylvie isn’t in her room. Abigail knocks on the locked bathroom, but Sylvie won’t let her in. She tells her she thought if everyone knew then Abigail would have no choice but to resign. She reveals it was her that told the journalist, Simon, about what's going on. She says now her dad is going to die because Abigail cares more about her job than them. Abigail begs to be let in and Sylvie comes out, but won’t let Abigail touch her.

In French Guiana, Thomas tells the doctors they need to escape or they’ll all die. The female doctors think it’s a bad idea, but Alex agrees that it is. Even he can admit Abigail isn’t coming for them. Kofi comes to see Abigail and she’s asleep on the sofa, it’s 1:45 am. He tells her Toussaint is on her way over. Kofi praises her for putting her country first and tells her he won’t quit. She tells him the kidnappers have gone quiet and he says it’s because they don’t know how to react to what she’s done.

Toussaint arrives to speak to Abigail. She tells her it was insane to go on TV and she’s got Toussaint in a lot of trouble. She says the US President is now putting pressure on her, too. Abigail tells her she doesn’t care what the kidnappers are blackmailing her with, but she wants her to let the US launch their own rescue mission. She says she could do that, or she could just launch her own. But, before she does, she wants Abigail to help her find out who is blackmailing her. She asks if Abigail has someone she trusts completely who can look into both their staffs. Abigail says she’ll do it if Toussaint rescues Alex and gives her a supply of drugs for the UK. She agrees.

The next day, Ayesha is waiting in a pharmacy for a prescription and there’s no medicine on the shelves. Abigail sends Ayesha a list of British and French names from the summit and asks her to do a background check on them all. Meanwhile, Pelletier goes to see Toussaint who is on the phone. She tells her they’re waiting for a response from her to Abigail’s broadcast. Pelletier asks who was on the phone and Toussaint tells her it was Philippe Arnault, one of the pharmaceutical suppliers. She wants to know if Toussaint is helping the British. Toussaint tells her they’re sending in the US after dark, but it’s confidential information. Elias and Toussaint head out.

The masked gunman arrives on a private jet, dressed in civilian clothes. He kisses his hand and places it on British soil. Three men meet him off the plane and they get into a car. The man looks at the news, watching the video of Attaf and his mother. Pelletier calls him and tells him about the US rescue mission. Elsewhere, Abigail has a meeting with her Cabinet and apologises for not telling them about the kidnapping. Dan brings up the virality of the Attaf video and Abigail tells him they’re close to making a deal on the supply of drugs.

When Abigail arrives home, her dad is there with Sylvie. He tells her he discharged himself from hospital because he needed to talk to her face-to-face. He tells her he knows what Sylvie did, but she clearly didn’t have a choice. He asks if the kidnappers have been in touch since she went public and she says no. Her dad tells Sylvie to give them a minute alone.

He tells Abigail nothing is more important than family and she’s risking losing Sylvie forever, as well as Alex. She tells him she has a plan, but he doesn’t trust her. She tells him if her mother was there... but he shuts her down before she can finish and says he knows her better than anyone. She calls him a coward for telling her to give into the people making demands. He tells her getting Alex back is the only thing that matters. She argues she has other priorities and he tells her he doesn’t know who she is and leaves.

Matheo and Saskia lay in bed together. The doorbell interrupts them and it’s Toussaint’s security team again, along with Toussaint and Matheo’s father, Elias. Saskia introduces herself to him and he says he wants her to leave, but Matheo insists she stays. He asks if she knows about him and Toussaint and she says she does. Elias tells Matheo they’re going to stick together and he tells them they’re all going to go to church together. Matheo thinks it’s a joke and Toussaint says she can’t as it goes against separation of church and state. Elias argues if they do, it’ll take over the news and drown out Abigail. He insists to Matheo that they need him there, but he says he doesn’t owe him anything since he doesn’t take his money or use his name.

In French Guiana, the guards are on the move again. Alex is watching them under the door. Thomas says it’s their best chance to escape. He says when they get led out, they should make some distance between themselves. He tells Alex to pretend to fall and then grab the guard’s gun. Alex tells the other doctors he’ll call out and they should pull their blindfolds down and run in different directions.

Ayesha calls Abigail and she asks her to come and meet with her. Tristan comes to Kofi and tells him the French are on the way, despite cancelling their meeting. Toussaint and Abigail meet with Ayesha away from Pelletier and Kofi. Ayesha shows Abigail that Kofi opened a new bank account six months ago, set up under an offshore shell company. £72,000 was deposited and then immediately withdrawn. Toussaint receives a call and tells them to commence the rescue mission. Kofi and Pelletier are called into the situation room, where Toussaint and Abigail tell them they’re launching a French team that was on a need-to-know basis only. Pelletier thought they had three hours until the US entered.

The video feed goes live and Kofi notes as Pelletier sneaks out quietly. She calls the lead gunman and tells him. He says they must know there’s a mole and he’s doing what has to be done. She argues that they weren’t supposed to be killing doctors and she didn’t sign up to that. To this, Kofi walks in and hears her. He picks up the phone and calls for a Special Branch officer.

The gunman sends word and the guards begin to move. As they lead them out, Alex stumbles, as planned, and grabs the guard's gun, shouting to alert the others. Thomas overpowers his handler and takes his gun, shooting him. The other doctors run and Alex shoots another gunman dead as he wrestles with Thomas. They start to run and Alex follows one of the other doctors, Maya, but she’s shot down and killed. As Abigail watches the live feed, the French team manage to rescue the other doctor and Thomas, but Alex has a gun held to his head by the guard who killed Maya. Suddenly, the French military shoots him down and saves Alex. Overcome by emotion, Alex is handed a radio and he talks to Abigail. Abigail takes her heels off and runs up to Sylvie so she can speak to her dad. He tells her he’s coming home.

As Toussaint sighs with relief, Kofi leads Pelletier out in handcuffs. Abigail and Toussaint ask what’s going on and Kofi reveals he knows that Pelletier is compromised. But, while they lead her away, Abigail says she knows about Kofi’s offshore account and has to suspend him. He argues that she’s making a mistake, but she makes him hand over his pass.

Meanwhile, the main gunman and the three others park up and get out of the car. Him and two others are dressed in police uniforms. They head to a vigil for Attaf. The third man stands in the crowd dressed as a civilian. As Attaf’s mother gives a speech, the gunman comes over and tells them all to disperse as it's an unlawful gathering. The man in the crowd pulls out a smoke grenade and then smashes a pharmacy window. One of the other men dressed as policeman pepper sprays the crowd and they all begin to lose control. The main gunman pulls Attaf’s mother off the floor and walks away.

Elsewhere, Toussaint and Elias are visiting the church for a press opportunity. Toussaint poses for photos before dismissing the photographer and tells Elias he’s not trying to save her presidency, he’s trying to preserve his pride. He says what she’s done with his son will come out in the press eventually and he won’t look bad. He says he’s told his own press to break the story in 30 minutes and then he’ll issue a statement. He says if he shows he’s forgiven Toussaint, the public will too. She asks him what about his secrets and tells him if he comes out with her secret, he’ll tell everyone all of his.

She steps out of the church to all the press waiting. She tells them that her chief of staff, Pelletier, has been arrested on suspicion of blackmail and extortion. She also tells them that Abigail’s husband has been rescued by a French mission. As Abigail watches, Ayesha comes in and takes her to the situation room. She watches the news clips of the riot at the Attaf vigil and is told there were seven casualties, with one dead.

Matheo arrives home and Saskia is gone. He hears her laptop beeping under the bed and pulls it out to see messages from S saying: “We’ve lost P. You need to step up,” and “Green ward. Room 19. Let me know when it’s done.” Meanwhile, Pelletier’s phone calls in the situation room from a private number. Ayesha answers it, and the man asks for Abigail. Tristan records the call. Abigail tells the man that they’ve caught Pelletier, but the man says they have many more just like her. Matheo tries to call Saskia, but the line is disconnected. Elsewhere, Saskia arrives at the hospital.

The man on the phone to Abigail congratulates her on saving Alex, but says instead the country will burn. She tells him he’s lost, but he says the game isn’t over and hangs up. Meanwhile, Saskia arrives in Room 19, where Abigail’s dad lies in his hospital bed. She injects a blue liquid into his IV line, killing him.

Hostage, a brand-new political thriller on Netflix, sees Abigail Dalton (Suranne Jones) swept into a plot of kidnapping and blackmail that threatens her role as Prime Minister as she meets with the French President, Toussaint.

As the two women head into political battle, it appears the threat is far greater than each other. During the French President's visit to Downing Street, the pair become embroiled in a terrifying plot that could destroy everything they've worked so hard to build.

As Abigail's husband, Alex, is kidnapped, Toussaint finds herself blackmailed into a stalemate that leaves each head of state faltering.

But, can they unravel the truth before it jeopardises their entire careers, their loved ones and even themselves? Spoilers to follow.

Here's a recap of everything that happened in Hostage episode 2.

The episode opens with Thomas Mercer chasing the two cars with the hostages inside. The lead masked gunman instructs the driver to lose him. Meanwhile, Abigail tries to call Toussaint, but the President ignores her. Guards arrive at Matheo’s place to search for concealed surveillance. Toussaint arrives as Saskia is leaving. When she's gone, Matheo asks Toussaint what’s going on.

Elsewhere, Abigail goes to see General Livingston, chief of the defence staff. She tells him she’s sent MI6 to locate the four doctors being held hostage. She says she knows it’s not normal protocol, but there was supposed to be a French rescue mission by Toussaint, but she aborted at the last minute. She informs him she’s got an agent following the hostages. When he asks why, she reveals one of the hostages is Alex. Meanwhile, Toussaint tells Matheo she’s being blackmailed with a video of them together. She tells him they want Abigail to resign.

Abigail asks if there’s any more military support they can use, but General Livingston tells her it’d take 48 hours and would be impossible to hide themselves heading into French territory. She says she'd need to get Toussaint’s clearance. Meanwhile, Matheo pleads with Toussaint to get the Secret Service involved, but she doesn’t want anyone knowing.

She doesn’t know who to trust and doesn’t want to risk Desmaris, her political rival, and the far-right taking control of France. She asks for Matheo’s help. He says he knows someone who can look at her phone. She hands it over. Abigail tries to call Toussaint to plead for her help, but it goes straight to voicemail.

In French Guiana, Thomas is still on the kidnappers’ trail. The lead gunman instructs the car behind him to slow Thomas down. Then, he stops and steps out into the road in front of him. As Thomas turns the corner, he begins to shoot at him. Thomas fires back and hides behind his car. He sneaks up on him and shoots him in the shoulder before grabbing him and putting him in the back of the car with the other hostages. Another gunman asks him, in English, why he didn’t kill Thomas and he replies angrily, telling him to speak in French. Alex overhears.

Abigail’s getting ready and listening to the radio. A woman is on air complaining about the lack of cancer drugs available in the UK. She struggles to put her contacts in and heads down in glasses. Abigail asks Kofi where Toussaint is, but he tells her Thomas is now missing. MI6 found his truck, blood, but no body. Kofi says they’ll need to wait for the 1 pm deadline to see what the kidnappers do next, but she can’t negotiate with them because then they’ll hold all the power. He tells her to choose her country over her family. He again insists she tells the Cabinet what’s going on.

In a Cabinet meeting, Abigail tells her MPs that Toussaint wants French border forces on UK soil in exchange help with the NHS crisis. Dan argues that they can’t let the French dictate what they do, but Abigail shuts him down. He then reveals he’s heard rumours that Toussaint left the reception abruptly the night before and asks whether there’s more they should know. Abigail again refuses to tell them.

Returning to her office, Sylvie is there reading the classified file and says she now knows about the deadline and someone being killed. Ayesha was trying to stop her. Sylvie is angry and asks for more, to which Abigail tells her about Toussaint aborting the mission. When Abigail reveals they want her to resign, Sylvie tells her to. She says she won’t and it’s what Alex would want, too. Sylvie tells her that if anything happens to her dad, she’ll never forgive her.

In French Guiana, it’s nighttime and the cars arrive at a new location. They offload Thomas and the doctors. As they take their blindfolds off, Alex determines Thomas must be MI6 and asks another doctor for her help to treat his bullet wound. Alex and Tom introduce themselves to each other and Alex packs the wound. One of the female doctors discusses the factthat their captors are British and Alex says it means someone’s really trying to get rid of his wife.

Elsewhere, Matheo watches the video of him and Toussaint in bed. He remembers how they met in a hotel room and kissed. Saskia calls him and when he picks up, she tells him someone’s following her. She tells him it’s his stepmom’s security. She thinks there must be something he’s not telling her and he finally reveals he was in a relationship with her. He tells her it didn’t last long, but it was real and happened in the weeks he helped her on her campaign. He tells Saskia he loves her and needs her.

At Downing Street, Abigail tells Kofi she’s going to speak to Toussaint again and try and change her mind. Kofi says she's just playing hardball to win her election, but Abigail says she’ll give her what she wants. He tells her she can’t negotiate and should tell her ministers instead, but again she refuses. To this, he tells her he can’t work for her if she won’t take his advice and tells her he wants to quit.

Abigail and Toussaint meet again, this time at an electric vehicle expo for their next public appearance during the summit. Abigail tries to talk to Toussaint, but she tells her not there. Abigail replies that she’s out of time. She says if she lets Toussaint put French border forces on UK soil, she’ll be done in politics. But, she says she hasn’t got a choice and she’ll do it. To this, Toussaint says she still can’t help her. Abigail begs her to help bring Alex home and asks Toussaint again why she can’t do it. She tells Toussaint she wants her in the room with her when the deadline expires, so she can have blood on her hands, too, if any of the doctors are killed. The journalist, Simon, from earlier notices the two women talking.

Afterwards, Matheo is waiting and tells Pelletier he needs to see Toussaint. He gets into the back of the car with her to talk. He wants to know if it was her plan to have Saskia followed and she admits it. He gives her back her phone and says that whoever sent the video used a dark web SMS gateway to hide their location and he can't find them. Before he can get out the car, she holds his arm and apologises. She says she can’t let her enemies win and he says she’s changed and to stay away from him and Saskia.

Sylvie plays a card game with her grandad in hospital. She asks him if he trusts Abigail and he wants to know why she’s asking. She tells him they’re going to kill her dad. He asks who. Meanwhile, it’s minutes to the deadline and Abigail steps into the situation room. Her dad tries to call her, but she ignores it. Toussaint is there. Abigail says she’ll speak to them when they call. A live video link is sent for them to open and Alex is placed front and centre. Alex can see them, too. Words are brought over for Alex to read. He asks Abigail: “What’s it going to be?” She wants to know who the kidnappers are and why they’re doing it.

The masked gunman types a reply for Alex. It reads: “No more time. Say goodbye.” He then holds a gun to Alex’s head and everyone in the situation room flinches. Abigail begs and says she can help them and they have her attention. They type again telling her to resign, adding: “You can make us all safe. It’s up to you.” But, she asks for more time. She tells Alex she loves him and he says it back, telling her he trusts her.

They hold the gun to Alex’s head and he tells her it’s the kidnapper’s betrayal, not hers. Sylvie appears outside the room and begs Ayesha to see her mum. Alex reads another message to say that time is up. Ayesha steps back into the room and Sylvie shouts for her dad. As he shouts back, one of the gunmen shoots another of the male doctors, Noah, in the head, killing him. Abigail runs up to Sylvie, but she’s angry and crying.

Thomas and the doctors are taken back into the room they’re being held in. Alex begs with the lead gunman and says to leave the others alone since the problem is to do with his wife. He tells him he has a daughter and the gunman replies that he did, too. They close the doors. Meanwhile, Toussaint goes to see Abigail. Abigail says they need to be honest with each other or every hostage will die.

Toussaint reveals she’s being threatened and explains she was sent a video. When Abigail asks what it was, she won’t tell her. She says if she helps, they’ll go public and she’ll lose her presidency. Abigail recalls Alex’s words that it’s the kidnapper’s betrayal and explains he means you can only betray someone you have an allegiance to, which Abigail thinks means the kidnappers are British. Abigail says they should stand together, but Toussaint doesn’t want to ruin her career and family. Abigail asks if that means she has to lose everything, but Toussaint says it’s her choice to save herself.

Afterwards, Zadie comes to see Abigail and tells her they have a leak. Simon, the journalist, says a source of his has given him information related to Alex. He knows about the hostage situation. He also knows about the demands. He even knows about the aborted French mission. Abigail asks what Simon wants. But Simon says what he knows is in the public interest. He knows two hostages have already been shot and that if Abigail doesn’t act, they’ll all die. He tells her the story will be front-page news tomorrow, but he offers her the chance to give her side of the story. Abigail says no comment. Kofi dismisses him.

When he’s gone, Kofi tells Abigail they’ll issue a D-notice to the Times and tell them it’s a matter of national security. She says they’ll find a way round it and it can’t be stopped. Instead, she says they should make an announcement that evening. She says she’ll put an end to it with the only thing she can say. Kofi tells her not to resign. That evening, Abigail goes live on air.

Meanwhile, her dad continues to try and call her, before noticing she’s on the news. Pelletier runs into Toussaint and puts on the news, too. Toussaint tries to stop her by calling Kofi, but he ignores it. Abigail tells the entire truth about the hostage situation, her husband’s kidnapping and Toussaint’s negotiations. She tells the nation she wants her husband back, but she can’t give in to them for the sake of her country. She tells them she’s not to be threatened, she won’t negotiate and she won’t resign.

Sylvie watches on and starts shaking. She says if she resigns, then no one is safe. Abigail also reveals that Toussaint is also being blackmailed. When asked what they’re blackmailing her with, she says she doesn’t know. She reveals that two people have already been killed.

During the speech, Pelletier receives a phone call and moves to another room to answer. The masked gunman asks her what is happening and she says she doesn’t know. He tells Pelletier she’s on the ground to stop surprises like this. She tells him that they misjudged Abigail and he says it was her that misjudged.

Now, he says, it’s time to up the ante. He tells her he’s coming home. Abigail continues speaking on the news, telling the reporter she is loyal to her country, despite how much she wants her husband home, and won’t let the country be held to ransom. She says whoever thought they could do that has underestimated her.

Netflix has added Hostage, a new political thriller starring Suranne Jones as a British Prime Minister placed in an impossible situation.

The five-part story sees theVigil actor play Abigail Dalton, who is hosting French President Vivienne Toussaint (Before Sunrise star Julie Delpy) for an important summit. But during the meeting, Abigail receives the horrifying news that her husband Alex (The Ipcress File’s Ashley Thomas) has been kidnapped while carrying out humanitarian work overseas.

When the kidnappers threaten to kill Alex unless Abigail resigns, she is forced to ask Vivienne for help — and discovers that her French counterpart is also being targeted by blackmailers. Can the pair put aside their differences to unravel the sinister plot that threatens them both?

Academy Award-nominated British screenwriter Matt Charman (Bridge of Spies), who created the series, tells us that Suranne inspired him to pen the series.

"It came from really wanting to work with Suranne! We talked a lot about women and power, and what it takes for a woman to rise up the ranks. In this country, we can be cynical about politics, but I thought if anyone was going to make me care, it would be Suranne. So the challenge was, 'If we make the character a prime minister who's going through something awful, how far can we push it?'"

Hostage features Downing Street and the House of Commons. Matt explains they tried to film in the real House of Commons, but that didn't quite work out.

"We got very close to shooting in the real chamber of the House of Commons! The Speaker, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, was amazing and did everything he could with his staff to make that happen but, logistically, it just wasn’t going to be possible, so we built a set.

"When you've got hundreds of people working on something like that, you think, ‘Have I done enough with this amazing opportunity? Are these words good enough?’ The biggest challenge is making sure you don’t collapse under the pressure and use it to make the scene as good as it can be."

Is Hostage worth a watch?

If you enjoy political thrillers like The Diplomat and House of Cards, then this is clearly for you. It has a great cast and writer, and appears a quality production. If you're into high action stuff and find political thrillers incredibly dull then maybe not so much!

The episode opens on Abigail and Alex walking through a forest. They’re discussing the pros and cons of her becoming Prime Minister. She’s worried their daughter, Sylvie, will have cameras in her face. But, Alex argues that Abigail can make a real difference. It starts to rain and they take shelter under a tree. Abigail doesn’t want it to affect the three of them and Alex assures her she’ll make the right choice, if she has to. They kiss.

It cuts to Abigail as the newly-appointed Prime Minister. She stands in front of the press to greet them as Alex and Sylvie stand off to the side, supporting her. They head into Downing Street together and hug as a family. Kofi welcomes her. It cuts to eight months later and Abigail is in the House of Commons. An MP, Oliver Bahrami, asks her about how she planned to save the NHS and social care system by taking funds from the military. But, the British Army is now much smaller and yet, the NHS is still suffering with no critical cancer drugs and other medicines. He wants to know if it’s time for her to apologise to the British people.

Meanwhile, a car is driving through a thick jungle. Someone is photographing as the doctors from Médecins Sans Frontières travel inside, one of whom is Alex. They visit people to give free vaccinations and health checks. Photos are still being taken from a drone above. Back at the House of Commons, Oliver thinks the plan to go to the French for help isn’t enough. And, that while the PM is starting a critical summit with President Toussaint, she should reassure the British public that they’re not going in naked.

Abigail steps forward to reply. She amuses her party with her fiery response, but assures them all that she will end the shortage and that nothing will distract her from it. Meanwhile, masked and armed men are driving through the jungle with Alex’s face on an intel sheet.

Back at Downing Street, Kofi tells Abigail her reply in PMQs is all over the news and now everyone is expecting the French to be the answer to their problem. She tells him she read his update on the SOS Méditerranée. He says there’s 12 more cases of Ebola, resulting in 79 in total. He suggests they take on the boat of refugees in exchange for the medication the country needs. As she changes quickly, Kofi tells Abigail she also needs to apologise for the ‘hot mic’ incident where she was caught calling Toussaint “a handmaiden to the hard right.” Abigail heads outside to greet President Toussaint.

As they head back inside Downing Street, Abigail greets her in French, an introduction she was shown on a piece of paper moments before Toussaint’s arrival. Touissaint jokes that she spent far too long discussing how long they’d shake hands for. Tousssaint says her husband isn’t joining since Abigail’s is away working. Meanwhile, Alex and the doctors are giving medical care as the masked gunmen suddenly appear in their cars. They grab all the doctors and as the translator runs forward, they shoot him dead. Then, they take a photo of Alex.

Toussaint gives Abigail a gift, a replica of the Field of the Cloth of Gold, a 16th century summit. Toussaint quips that during the summit, the heads of state wrestled and King Henry VIII lost. The press take more photos and Abigail dismisses everyone aside from Kofi and Toussaint’s second, Adrienne Pelletier. Abigail begins by apologising for the comments she made. Toussaint says she found it amusing. She says she’s listening to her people.

Abigail says they need her help with the NHS crisis and she notes they need their help in exchange with the immigration problem. Toussaint blames the UK’s border and says she wants to police them for her. She says she’ll provide the manpower, but she wants French police on British soil. Abigail refuses. She wants a stable supply of cancer drugs and other medications in exchange for the UK taking in the people onboard the SOS Méditerranée. Toussaint says she’s not interested in those people.

Sylvie, Abigail and Alex's daughter, arrives home and Abigail tells her that her friend Jess’s dad phoned her and she knows she lied. She says they only went out in London and Abigail’s worried she’ll get a photo taken of her that’ll ruin her life. She says she knows and asks for her phone back because Ayesha took it. Abigail hands it back and tells her to stay off social media. Sylvie wishes her dad was there and Abigail says he’ll phone later.

Alex and the other doctors are now tied up and blindfolded. They're sitting in the back of one of the cars. Kofi receives a phone call and goes to find Abigail. He tells her that Alex's Médicins Sans Frontières jeep has been found abandoned in French Guiana. Their translator is dead and the doctors are missing. They believe Alex has been abducted. He says it might be about money, but they haven’t had a ransom request yet. They also don’t have resources in the region to launch an immediate rescue mission.

Abigail says since it's French territory, they can help, but Kofi thinks they don’t know about it yet. He tells her if she asks Toussaint for help, it’ll weaken her negotiations. She wants to keep it need to know, but he says they should assemble the Cabinet. Abigail refuses. She says he can only brief Ayesha, Zadie, and Tristan, who can run point with MI6, but she doesn't want it going any further.

Abigail goes to speak with Sylvie. But before she can, Sylvie receives a message, a video from her dad. Abigail grabs the phone before Sylvie can watch and calls for Ayesha. She tells Sylvie that her father and the other doctors have been abducted. Sylvie wants to see the video, but Abigail passes it to Ayesha and tells her to take it to MI6. Meanwhile, Toussaint drives through immigration protests. Talking to her husband on the phone, he tells her that the refusal to let the boat dock in Calais is on the news. Toussaint notes that her step son is stood amidst the protestors, staring at her.

Meanwhile, Toussaint and Pelletier gather on a basketball court for a sports press event. Pelletier is on the phone to her child and tells her she’ll be home soon. Kofi arrives and tells Pelletier that Abigail has business she’s attending to. Pelletier comments that she can’t understand why Abigail would ever consider getting rid of Kofi and asks him whether the rumors are true. He says it’s entirely possible since it was her predecessor who appointed him. Pelletier overhears whispers of police involvement as Tristan speaks to Kofi. After, Kofi asks if Toussaint can return to Downing Street.

Abigail, Sylvie and Ayesha are looking at the briefing about Alex and the other missing doctors. They bring in President Toussaint and Pelletier and show them the video of Alex. Alex reads from a card: “The path of least resistance is the easiest to walk. It takes no imagination or ingenuity. You need to take that path now, Abigail. You need to resign as Prime Minister by 1PM tomorrow.” He goes on to tell her that if she does so, Alex and the other three doctors will be released. But, if she doesn’t, one of them will die and they’ll try again.

Toussaint asks if they’re doing anything to find the captors and Tristan reveals they have one man on the move. Abigail reveals she will not resign, but that, as French territory, she wants Toussaint to send in her military. Toussaint agrees to send in the police to find the location and then send in the military once they do. Pelletier says they have a press conference in six minutes and although Toussaint says to cancel it, Kofi says if they don’t go, people will start to talk, which could put the doctors in further danger.

Abigail makes her apology again, this time to the press, regarding her comments about Toussaint. Simon Kinglsey from the Times asks about the medicine supply chain crisis, but directs his question at Toussaint, asking if she’ll help. She explains there’s a lot of history between France and the UK, but to keep the bond strong, they both need to act. She announces that Abigail is letting the SOS Méditerranée dock in the UK, without them having confirmed it between themselves.

Afterwards, Abigail is angry at Toussaint, but she argues that Abigail could give up her power to save her husband, instead of asking for France’s help. Abigail questions then whether taking in those people is the price for bringing Alex home and asks Toussaint why she said wasn’t even interested in them. She says they weren’t of interest to her as part of the deal she was proposing because she didn’t want to use them as bargaining chips. She says she’ll help bring Alex home, but in exchange, she wants French border forces on UK soil like she asked. She’s up for re-election and she won’t lose it.

In French Guiana, one of the men removes their masks and reads a text message saying that Toussaint is launching a rescue mission and that more details are coming. That evening, Abigail tells Sylvie she’ll bring her dad home. Sylvie asks what they want, but Abigail won’t tell her. They also agree not to tell Sylvie’s grandad. Abigail argues he always sees right through her.

They go to visit Sylvie’s grandad in hospital. He apologises for dying in the middle of Abigail’s summit, but she tells him he’s not dying. He replies that’s only because she won’t let him. Immediately, he asks what’s going on. Sylvie tells him it’s because she got drunk with her friend and got in trouble. Back at home, Abigail gets ready for a reception. She thinks of the time her and Alex discussed whether she should even run for Prime Minister. Kofi is waiting for her downstairs.

Toussaint and Pelletier arrive at the reception. Pelletier informs her they haven’t located the doctors yet, but they’ll have the polling results from after her press conference soon. Pelletier praises Toussaint for forcing Abigail to take on the migrants. Toussaint asks if Matheo, her stepson, has arrived and Pelletier says he has, with his girlfriend. Matheo and his girlfriend are upstairs talking and Toussaint greets them. He introduces his girlfriend, Saskia. Toussaint asks Matheo in French where he found this one and he tells her it’s serious and tells her to be nicer.

The hostages are being held in an empty shed and Alex tries to reassure the other doctors who are crying. He tells them they’ll be putting a rescue mission together. Meanwhile, Abigail arrives at the reception. She stands with Toussaint and asks her what she does for joy. Toussaint jokes and then tells her she plays online poker. Abigail notes that while they’re never alone, she always feels lonely. Toussaint watches as Saskia leaves Matheo alone and excuses herself to head over to speak with him.

Kofi tells Abigail they’ve located the doctors. In French Guiana, a man watches over the guards and shed with a camera. At the reception, Matheo asks why Toussaint invited him. She replies by asking why he came. He says he wanted to thank her for saving the people on the boat. She tries to dismiss it and tell him to thank Abigail instead, but he says he knows it was her idea.

He says the woman he knew before was campaigning for positive change and she argues she always did things right politically. He says that’s why she married his dad because he owns a news channel and two papers. And now, he can see they’re all pushing her right and she’s better than that. She tells him to stop protesting. Pelletier interrupts.

Abigail is watching a live feed of the man’s camera in French Guiana. Tristan tells Abigail he’s called Thomas Mercer, their man on the ground. Abigail radios to him and asks if he sees him. Then, he notes that the doctors are being moved. Thomas asks for back-up and a helicopter is on the way. Kofi says they’re running facial recognition to confirm IDs and while they look, Toussaint receives a video message on her phone.

It’s a video of Matheo, topless, getting into bed with Toussaint and giving her a kiss. She then receives a message: “We know about you and your stepson. No rescue. Or we go public. Dalton must resign.” Suddenly, the messages all disappear. The team gets a positive ID on the three doctors, but no Alex. Abigail sees them and Pelletier says the French military are two minutes out; they just need the order from President Toussaint. Instead, she tells them to abort. The helicopter flies away and the cars with the doctors in drive off. Abigail instructs Thomas to stay on them. Abigail dismisses all the staff apart from Toussaint and then asks her why she aborted the mission. Toussaint tells Abigail she'll have to resign to get him back.

Sky has finally dropped a trailer for The Iris Affair, which is the thriller I'm most excited about coming out in the autumn.

A big plus is that it stars Tom Hollander, who gave a standout performance in the superb thriller The Night Manager alongside Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie. Hollander is also known for The White Lotus and Rev.

Another plus is The Iris Affair has been created by Neil Cross, the man behind the hit BBC1 series Luther. Set on the Sardinian coast, the series follows Iris Nixon (Mary & George's Niamh Algar), who steals a mysterious code from a charming philanthropist (Hollander). She must use her wits to lie low and rely on her intelligence to survive an increasingly deadly game of hide and seek.

The 45-second trailer, just released by Sky below and set to the background of "My Favourite Game" by The Cardigans, illustrates that the drama will look beautiful.

Teasing the plot, the makers say: "When enigmatic genius Iris Nixon (Algar) cracks a string of complex online puzzles, she's led to a piazza in Florence where she meets charismatic entrepreneur Cameron Beck (Hollander). He invites her to come and work for him to unlock a powerful and top-secret piece of technology. Her curiosity piqued, she accepts. But when Iris discovers its dangerous potential, she steals the journal containing the device’s activation sequence—and vanishes.

"What follows is a relentless pursuit, from a remote cabin in Sardinia through the bustling streets of Rome, as Cameron races to find Iris in a high-stakes game where trust is dangerous and failure could be catastrophic.”

Writer and showrunner Neil Cross previously said: "All I wanted to do was to make a show I wanted to watch. Iris is an unapologetically exciting, witty, chase-driven adventure show and features a lead character the like of which I don't think we've ever met before on TV.

After its first episode introduced us to our main character and his quest, Butterfly episode 2 on Prime Video begins said adventure and it came out with the others on Wednesday, August 13.

In the first episode of Butterfly we followed our main character David as he travelled to Korea in order to make contact with his estranged daughter Rebecca. We learnt that she works for the evil spy agency Caddis, which he originally created, and saw him begin his quest to rekindle his relationship and extract her from her job.

By Butterfly episode 2 David has made contact with Rebecca and they've began their journey, but we see a new threat emerge in the form of a determined assassin while Caddis tries to put David in the ground.

This Butterfly episode 2 recap will remind you of what happened in the second episode.

A drive to Busan

The episode starts in a gas station where David Jung (Daniel Dae Kim) and Rebecca (Reina Hardesty) have stopped for snacks, the morning after the events of the previous episode. He's being coy on their next steps but tells her they need to go to Busan to get something before he takes her to Vietnam, where he lives now.

Rebecca has begun to doubt her decision to leave Caddis and she goes into the bathroom to call Juno (Piper Perabo). However during the call Rebecca catches Juno in another lie and decides not to trust her, but she sneaks out a window in order to make David think she'd left, just to teach him what abandonment feels like.

On the drive to Busan, David and Rebecca get stopped in a police checkpoint, and when he gives his ID to them they tell him to step out of the car (and their check alerts Caddis to the whereabouts). Instead the duo get into a fight with the cops, so David steals another car and they drive off in it.

We now go to a stranger: a woman lets a worker into her house to fix their CCTV, however he turns out to be an assassin and kills her due to her husband having stolen people from the wrong people. As the murder is taking place, the husband returns and he gets killed too. Then the assassin receives a call and it's from Juno, tasking him with killing David Jung.

Popping over to Daegu

On the way to Busan, Rebecca and David stop in the city of Daegu. David takes them to his friend's noodle shop (where the scene took place in episode 1) and they drink some home-made soju (it emerges that David's new job is making and selling this alcoholic drink). However Rebecca passes out as David had drugged the drink.

At Caddis' Korean headquarters, Juno is visited by George Dawson (Charles Parnell), a senator who's in charge of a security commission and is visiting to investigate the death at the beginning of episode 1. He knows the Russian ambassador was funneling US secrets to Russia (which we know Caddis was behind) and is trying to find out more.

David goes through Rebecca's things and finds her gun, hidden knife, multiple fake passports and her phone. He looks through the latter and discovers that she did call Juno at the gas station. When she wakes up later David admits that he drugged her as he doesn't trust her. She begins to attack him but she's still groggy so he easily subdues her.

As he holds her, David recounts the story of him faking his death: he led a team that attacked a powerful network but discovered that the target was planning to target his family. When the target escaped, he faked his death to disincentivize the network from killing the then-child Rebecca.

David's wife calls him, as she thinks she's being followed by Caddis. She's at a nearby train station so he decides to come and rescue her. He asks Rebecca to stay behind.

Attack at the train station

Caddis are indeed following David's wife but she was meant to see them and call him, because this is all a trap to ensnare David. Juno's son Oliver thinks Caddis should just leave well enough alone because David clearly just wants out, but she refuses.

David gets to the station and subdues a Caddis agent to get his comms and hear what everyone is saying, and then uses this information to take out another agent. However this clues Caddis into the fact that David is there.

Talking to Juno with the comms, David warns her that if she hurts his family, he'll destroy Caddis. An agent nearly sneaks up on David but Rebecca takes the guy out, revealing her presence to David and showing Caddis that Rebecca has changed sides.

Two agents are guarding the closet that David's wife is heading in but David and Rebecca draw them out and fight them in private, but when the former wins his combat he gets attacked by the assassin who's come to the station. He gets slashed by a knife and quite badly injured but escapes onto the train, which Rebecca and the wife are already on.

And as David reclines in his seat, injured and being helped by Rebecca, his wife arrives... as does a young girl who turns out to be another daughter that David never telled Rebecca about.

By the third episode of Butterfly, we've settled into the rhythms of this new Prime Video series: our main character David and his estranged daughter Rebecca are fleeing across South Korea to escape the country while evil intelligence agency Caddis pursues them.

Butterfly episode 3, entitled 'Busan', takes us to the half-way point of this six-part thriller series, and it came out with all the others on Wednesday, August 13.

As the title tells, David and Rebecca have now made it to the country's second city, Busan, and they're not alone with the former's new wife and daughter being introduced right at the end of episode 2.

Train to Busan

On the train from Daegu, David Jung (Daniel Dae Kim) patches up his wounds and calls the friend who's making him his fake passports, telling him that they need to be ready for tonight. They arrange to meet in a market in Busan.

Meanwhile in the train carriage Rebecca (Reina Hardesty) pours scorn on David's new wife Eunju (Tae Hee Kim) and daughter Minhee, upset that her father moved on so fast after faking his death. She finds David to confront him but he says they'll talk about it later, and need to get to a safehouse in Busan first. She points out that Caddis will storm the train at its next stop but he has a plan.

Over in Caddis HQ Juno (Piper Perabo) calls the assassin, telling him off for not getting David. But then Caddis has an outage in their systems: turns out that whoever they get their satellite feed from pulled access after realizing that the agency was involved in the conflict in the train station at the end of episode 2.

Back to the train: David pulls its emergency stop and they get off the train, several kilometers from the stop. They go to a truck depot and hitch-hike to get a ride to Busan but knowing that they're being pursued, David smears some blood on a different truck. The assassin gets to the depot but pulls over and stops the wrong truck, giving the vehicle carrying David and his family leeway to escape.

Strange birthday present

Eventually the family arrives at David's Busan safehouse which he says is clean. There's a brief scare as someone is lurking around but it turns out to be a local man whom David pays to upkeep the place.

The senator we met last episode, George Dawson (Charles Parnell), meets Juno with social media posts of her son Oliver (Louis Landau) at a party. He's talking to a young man who's the son of a property magnate... and a CIA asset, and who died that same evening. It's drawn the attention of the CIA and George wants to talk to Oliver.

Juno tells this to her son, chastising him and blaming him for if Caddis shuts down. He wants to be trusted more but she says he's not as good as Rebecca. Still, he convinces her to let him into the field in order to pursue Rebecca.

Back at the safehouse, Rebecca is showing Minhee how to load a gun which freaks out Eunju. David intervenes to make them get along but Minhee runs away, forcing her father to play hide and seek with him. Rebecca watches enviously.

Somehow, the assassin has found David's friend's noodle bar. He attacks the man and, upon realizing that he won't give David up, kills him. The assassin finds the man's notes on the meeting time as well as the fake passports David was due to receive.

It's Minhee's birthday and David wants them to make a cake, but Minhee only wants to participate if Rebecca joins in. They do but David mentions a game that he and Rebecca used to play when she was small, called (like the show) 'butterfly' which upsets her and she storms off. David wants to comfort her but has to pick up the passports.

A fight in the docks

Juno passes George intel in the case he's investigating: the assassination of the Russian ambassador, pinning it all on Rebecca. However she insists that Caddis had nothing to do with the other case that the CIA is investigating.

David goes to the market at the meeting time and starts to notice agents, including Oliver, so he leaves. However the assassin sees this and he, along with the Caddis agents, tracks David back to the safehouse. David knows they should go and so the family escapes just in time, as the agents arrive.

However when David goes to the nearby docks and bribes a fisherman to take them to a nearby island, the Caddis agents pursue. Eunju and Minhee hide while Rebecca engages the agents in a firefight and David lays a trap. He sets off a gasoline explosion which takes out most of the troops except the assassin, Oliver and one other man who give chase.

David gets into a fight with the assassin and nearly gets killed by fishing machinery but gets the drop on the assassin and shoots him, knocking him into the harbor. He goes to the room where his wife and daughter are hiding and kills the agent who's trying to break in.

Rebecca fights Oliver and when the man's gun jams, he tries to run, but is knocked out by David. David prepares to execute Oliver but the boy admits that Juno set him up nine years prior when he had to go on the run. David calls Juno to scold her for this and then to kill Oliver when she can hear it; he points his gun to the boy's head and shoots, but we don't see whether he actually shot Oliver or not.

We're over half way through Butterfly now and episode 4 of 6 this Prime Video thriller series sees the tables turn: instead of being on the run, David and Rebecca give chase to their nemesis.

Butterfly episode 4 is called 'Pohang' which continues the past few episodes' themes of being named after cities, though it's not actually mentioned in the episode if they go to this city or not.

For the past three episodes main character David has been reconnecting with his estranged daughter Rebecca as he pulls her from her role in evil spy group Caddis, and episode 4 sees them get to the bottom of Caddis' plot and concoct a plan of their own.

Not quite dead

We begin with a flashback to nine years prior, in the immediate aftermath of David Jung (Daniel Dae Kim)'s last job for Caddis. Driving from the job he frantically phones Juno (Piper Perabo) asking her to look after Rebecca but then the convoy is attacked and everyone save David is killed. He neglects to respond to a phone call from Juno and walks into the night, seemingly suspicious of her. Some time later Juno goes to David's wife and a young Rebecca to tell them about his death.

In the present day Juno is on a fishing boat where agents are tossing bodies overboard, evidently it's the morning after episode 3's gunfight. Surprisingly, they have the assassin's body after he fell into the water, and even more surprisingly he's not dead. Juno asks where Oliver is but he doesn't know. Back at Caddis HQ she asks her aide to track David's family, but is told that they're well connected.

We meet the family: David, Rebecca (Reina Hardesty), Eunju (Tae Hee Kim) and Minhee are having dinner with Eunju's family, who run a shipping business which is a front for smuggling and don't like David. He asks for VISAs to Japan, not just for his family but for them too because they're in danger. He's rebuffed. Some banging starts up and he turns some music on to drown it out, and we discover that the noise is a tied-up Oliver (Louis Landau).

The data plot

In Seoul, George Dawson (Charles Parnell) is asked by someone if he's going to act on the intel Juno gave him, however he's skeptical about her claims of innocence, especially with the killing of a CIA agent on the same day. That same day Rebecca and David decide that their only course of action to stopping Juno from following them is to bring her down.

Rebecca threatens to torture Oliver for information on the killing of the Russian agent (which she carried out) but he calls her a murdered and she runs away. David uses doctored voice mails from Juno to imply that she turned down a trade for Oliver's life, and when David recounts some of Oliver's childhood stories, the boy opens up: Caddis was selling US intelligence to Russians using the hit target (Karpov) as an intermediary, and the CIA agent who died was looking for evidence of Caddis' sales. The two killings are to cover Caddis' tracks.

Later, Rebecca and David decide to return to Seoul to get evidence for Dawson about Juno's crimes. David tells his Eunju who, with Minhee, leaves with her family. Then Rebecca and David go to Seoul.

Return to Seoul

Juno's advisor tells her that he found blackmail material on one of Dawson's agents, so they now have a spy on the inside.

In Seoul, Rebecca and David orchestrate an accident with Dawson's aide so they can secretly download his data onto David's phone. This gives them his itinerary and they decide to meet him at a food market. We also learn that Rebecca now blames Juno for David's nine-year absence, not him.

At the food market David shows Rebecca some of his favorite foods, and then Dawson shows up. They distract Dawson's agents so that David can get a sit-down meeting with him: he offers the senator proof of Juno's crimes in exchange for immunity for David and Rebecca.

David also turns on Oliver's phone so Caddis knows he's there and, after the meeting, frees Oliver. Caddis bring him in, and they also know about the meeting between David and Dawson from their spy and from the phone locations.

Fans of spy thrillers have a brand-new series to binge watch thanks to Prime Video. Butterfly released with all six episodes on Wednesday, August 13 to watch at your leisure.

A mission goes wrong

We hear by hearing a man leaving a voice message: he needs to find someone who's going to briefly be in Seoul. And then we're there, in a karaoke booth as a drunk David Jung (Daniel Dae Kim) sings Mr. Brightside. Several of the attendees discuss not knowing whose friend he is, but he stumbles out to get more soju...

...and immediately is sober, having only pretending to be drunk. He slips in an earpiece and starts spying on a man in the control room, who's ostensibly controlling the karaoke but actually is working for a secret agency.

This agency is called Caddis and they're coordinating a mission to kill the Russian ambassador to South Korea at a nearby hotel.

We see Rebecca (Reina Hardesty), a pregnant woman, infiltrate the hotel under the guise of booking it out for a baby shower. She sneakily swaps her phone with the ambassador's and sneaks out — just as the man has a 'mysterious' heart attack.

Her elevator is shared by one of the target's security so when the attack is discovered, they begin to fight, and we learn she's not actually pregnant. She gets into a gunfight with other members of the security team and gets cornered in a conference room, before tricking them in making it seem that she'd jumped out a window to escape, when really she snuck out a side door.

Back at the karaoke bar David breaks into the control room and knocks out the agent, before getting the information on the extraction for the mission. He intercepts the extraction team, knocks them out, steals their car and weights at the rendezvous point.

Rebecca changes her disguise to escape from the hotel's lobby and again when on the metro, and goes to the meeting spot. However she notices damage on the car and, suspicions raised, runs away. David gives chase but is stopped by security and so has to flee.

A secret evil agency

At a secret Caddis site its leader Juno (Piper Perabo) interrogates a former agent who was discontent at Caddis working against the US. She extracts information about a Polish agent living in a Maltese fishing village before killing him. On the way out her son Oliver (Louis Landau) briefs her on the sabotaged Seoul job, and says the perpetrator had inside knowledge on the agency.

David scrubs down the vehicle he stole and gets to a metro station to board a train, but stops himself. He calls his wife to tell her what happened, and that he couldn't make contact, but that he's going to stay to try again. We learn that it's been 9 years since he last talked to Rebecca, who's his daughter, and he's not giving up until he's made contact. He tells his wife to flee to a safe house.

Rebecca calls Juno to let her know she's safe, and the boss is now suspicious of her despite her part of the job going well. Juno is heading to Korea to investigate, but Rebecca says she'll take care of the saboteur.

David visits the restaurant of a friend, who knows his true identity, and asks for passports to help him escape the country again for in a few days. We learn that David founded Caddis but faked his death nine years prior because he didn't like the direction it was headed, but now he has to come in from the cold to rescue his daughter.

David returns to the car he stole, smashes the window and hides some co-ordinates as a clue. Later Rebecca investigates and finds them with some fellow agents. She's hooking up with one of them, the agent from the karaoke control room, and afterwards expresses to him concern as to why the saboteur was only interested in her.

Leaving a trap

In a remote house in the woods, David begins mixing chemicals in a jar. Later he mixes other chemicals: foods, to make dumplings which he presents on a plate. Meanwhile Juno arrives at Caddis' Korean headquarters and calls Rebecca to tell her that she'll get extra agents to investigate the co-ordinates.

That evening Rebecca and her agents arrive at the house and break in, only to find the dinner laid out for her. Two agents head upstairs and David triggers the explosive he made in the jar, taking them out. He flees and another agent follows him into a warehouse, where they fight and David knocks him out.

Then David flees through the woods, with Rebecca hot on his tail, to a nearby cottage where he confronts her. She's upset as she thought he was dead, and he wants her to come with him now to explain everything. But she just knocks him unconscious.

Rebecca phones Juno, presuming that the boss knew David was the saboteur, but Juno is just as surprised. Rebecca hangs up as David comes to, and the man apologizes.

Just then the man David knocked out in the warehouse shows up and immediately draws a gun on David, so Rebecca shoots him. The woman looks at the dead assailant's phone to see a text from Juno: "kill him now". Seeing this betrayal, Rebecca agrees to leave with David.

Lost star Daniel Dae Kim stars in the new action-packed thriller series Butterfly, and you'll be able to watch it from Wednesday, August 15 when the entire season hits streaming.

Butterfly is about a former operative for a secret intelligence agency who fled that life nearly a decade prior after faking his own death. However when he learns that the daughter he abandoned now works for the group, he returns to Korea to rescue her, which puts a big target on his back.

In the same summer that she played Sue Storm in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Vanessa Kirby takes on another kind of hero’s journey in Night Always Comes. Though how they go about it is quite different, Kirby’s Sue and her character Lynette in the Netflix original movie both have the same drive — doing what has to be done to save their family.

Kirby and Netflix have been in a good partnership in recent years. She starred in the first couple of seasons of the Netflix original series The Crown as Princess Margaret, earning an Emmy nomination, and the Netflix movie Pieces of a Woman, for which she received a Best Actress Oscar nomination. Will this new pairing between Netflix and Vanessa Kirby lead to another hit on the streaming service?

Benjamin Caron is the director of Night Always Comes. This is the second feature movie directed by Caron. His previous movie directing credit was for the Apple TV Plus original movie Sharper. However, he has plenty of experience on big projects, including directing multiple episodes of Andor, The Crown (where he previously worked with Kirby) and Sherlock.

The movie was shot in Portland, Ore.

The horror genre has truly become a director’s showcase. Robert Eggers (The Witch, Nosferatu), Osgood Perkins (Longlegs, The Monkey), Ari Aster (Hereditary, Midsommar), Jordan Peele (Get Out, Us) and Zach Cregger, whose 2022 horror movie Barbarian put him on the map. Cregger has returned with his follow-up to Barbarian, Weapons, an eerie and entertaining addition to the horror canon.

In addition to directing, Cregger wrote the script for Weapons, which tells the story of a town where all but one student in an elementary school class mysteriously disappear one night. Suspicions are immediately raised around their teacher, Justine (Julia Garner), as parents, including Archer (Josh Brolin), desperately search for answers. Alden Ehrenreich, Benedict Wong, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher and Amy Madigan also star.

Weapons is completely defined by Cregger’s storytelling and direction, as it overshadows just about everything else, including the performances of his notable cast (with one exception).

Let’s start with the story. Cregger plays around with structure, telling the story in chapters that focus primarily on specific characters, with some overlap or bleeding into one another. This slowly reveals the secrets of the movie, doling out answers and key info bit by bit until the third act and the whole picture comes into view. It’s similar to his jump cuts in Barbarian, but here it is more about slowly stringing the audience along. While it definitely is a slow burn, this strategy works to keep the audience actively engaged.

Supporting that is Cregger’s directing style, particularly his mastery of creating tone. For all two hours of the movie there is an undeniable sense of dread hovering over everything. But Cregger doesn’t achieve that with overt stylistic choices (outside of a couple of dream sequences), it’s his tracking of characters, lingering on certain things, letting his scariest moments play out slowly rather than with jump scares and the blending darker elements with touches of humor that give the movie its unique sensibility.

Having said that, I do have a couple of small gripes. One that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense is that characters are affected by something at different parts of the movie but we never get an effective answer as to how or why that happens; the movie’s big reveals don’t give a satisfying answer to this.

Also, the movie’s message isn’t particularly clear, at least on first viewing. When I watched Barbarian I could quickly get what Cregger was going for with his story, as well as simply being entertained by what’s unfolding on screen. With Weapons, the story itself is interesting, but what exactly I should be taking away from it is muddled at best. Sometimes you don’t need an obvious message, but it can make the difference between a good and great movie; in this case it has me liking Barbarian a little bit better than Weapons.

With Weapons being the Cregger show, it relegates most of his ensemble as mostly forgettable. That’s not to say that Julia Garner or Josh Brolin are bad; their characters are perfectly fine subjects for us to follow as the mystery is unraveled. But we’re not as interested in what’s going on specifically with them as we are with the overall mystery of the story.

The one exception in the cast is Amy Madigan. Best known for her work in the 1980s, particularly in the classic Field of Dreams and her Oscar-nominated role in Twice in a Lifetime, Madigan has her best role in years in Weapons and she makes the most of it, stealing every scene she’s in. The role she has definitely is designed to draw our attention, but what she does with her performance is exceptional.

Weapons is a very good horror movie, but it’s not one just for the horror diehards (I definitely don’t consider myself as such). Because the movie relies more on tone than things like jump scares (though there are a couple snuck in there) it should be more accessible to a broader audience. Basically, if you’re interested in good filmmaking and a story that will keep you fully invested, then Cregger’s Weapons is worth watching.

Zach Cregger's Weapons has arrived in movie theaters to great acclaim — refer to WTW's Weapons review and the movie's 95% "Certified Fresh" score on Rotten Tomatoes as proof. If you're planning to watch Weapons this weekend, we definitely recommend you turn it into a double feature with Cregger's previous movie, Barbarian, which is streaming on Netflix. But you may want to hurry on that.

Barbarian is set to leave Netflix in the US at the end of the month, with the last day it'll be available to watch being Sunday, August 31. That means you only have a couple of weeks left before the movie heads to who knows where.

Showcasing a fun, unique new voice in the horror genre, here's why it's well worth your time to watch both of these movies as soon as possible.

Barbarian stars Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsgåd and Justin Long, and centers on the guests at an Airbnb house in a rundown Detroit neighborhood that hides some dark secrets. I won’t go any further into the movie’s plot because half the fun of it is the surprising places that Cregger takes the story.

I actually just caught up with Barbarian for the first time in anticipation of seeing Weapons, and the praise for Cregger's voice in horror from this movie was deserved. It's quite creepy to be sure, but it also has a dark sense of humor and a thoughtful idea over who the barbarian in the title truly refers to.

Cregger's follow-up, Weapons, lives up to the potential the director showed in Barbarian.

Starring Julia Garner, Josh Brolin and a solid ensemble, Weapons takes place in a small town in the aftermath of an entire elementary school class going missing and no one being able to figure out what happened, but suspicions fall on their teacher.

Cregger once again shows he's a master of creating an unsettling atmosphere, as from the first moment you're put on edge and it doesn't relieve itself one bit for the movie's two-hour runtime. That's because the secrets of this story are expertly revealed bit by bit to keep us engaged, with the movie's horror elements becoming more prominent the further we get along.

I personally would rank Barbarian ahead of Weapons right now, but they are both quite entertaining. They're must-watch for any horror fan, but even if it's not your favorite genre (it's not mine), they're still worth seeing if you appreciate good filmmaking.

Again, for the rest of August, Barbarian is only streaming on Netflix (subscription required), and we don’t yet know if it is immediately going to be heading to another streaming service in September after it leaves Netflix (though the movie is and will remain available via digital on-demand platforms).

So if you want to watch Barbarian on Netflix before or after watching Weapons, then you need to make the time before the month is out.

The first season of 24, Kiefer Sutherland's mega thriller hit, debuted nearly 24 years ago, so I thought it was time for a rewatch to see if it still kicked butt.

I was scared it would feel dated and corny, but fear not, Kiefer’s Counter Terrorism Unit agent Jack Bauer still has it. He remains one of TV’s truly great characters.

For anyone who missed 24 the first time around, 24 was a show everyone was seriously excited about. It was groundbreaking. No one had seen anything quite like it.

It came up with the novel idea of showing the events in real time, with each episode occurring over one hour.

The terrifying thumping digital clock became its defining tune, and in case you forgot, a gravely-voiced Jack would tell you at the start of each episode that "the following takes place between...". Also excitingly, the story would at times be told over split screens, giving you an even greater sense of angst.

Twenty-four years on, there are admittedly things that are dated, like telephone boxes being everywhere and everyone having gigantic cell phones. But it’s still an enjoyable ride, and I’d helpfully forgotten most of the twists as Jack’s longest day of his life goes from bad to worse as he tries to stop a planned assassination attempt on presidential hopeful David Palmer (Dennis Haysbert).

Looking back, Sutherland has a touch of Daniel Craig's 007 about him as he icily dispatches threats. Was Craig inspired by Sutherland’s performance? Who knows, but it was still five years before Craig’s debut in Casino Royale would come out.

Unlike Bond, Jack does have a family, and part of the subplot is his daughter Kim getting kidnapped after being under strict instructions not to go out and party. Yep, Kim's still a bit annoying! So, as well as trying to stop an assassination attempt, Jack has to try to find his daughter. To add to his woes, someone within CTU is a rat who's leaking information to the baddies. But poor Jack doesn’t even know who the baddies are.

The whole who is the mole is a great plot device and means you're forever trying to work out who among Jack’s colleagues is looking a bit shifty.

There’s actually more humor in the show than I remember. There are some great lines, a personal favorite is a baddie shooting dead a minion in front of another minion and telling him: "You've just been promoted, congratulations".

I’ve rewatched shows from years ago I’ve loved before, and many of them now seem rather slow, not 24. It keeps a relentless pace going throughout and expertly weaves together all the different plot threads into one great conclusion. This was and remains gripping TV.

It eventually ran throughout the Noughties, arguably becoming the defining show of the decade. But to most fans, season 1 will always be the best, as you had no idea where it was going next. Absolutely everyone wanted the distinctive CTU alert ringtone!

If you’ve never seen 24 and wonder what the fuss is about, it’s well worth a watch. And if, like me, you’re feeling a little nostalgic for Jack Bauer and co, then it’s well worth a rewatch. It’s certainly more than worthy of its place in our Top 100 shows of all time list.

The creative minds behind The Tourist has moved onto a new thriller TV show, called The Assassin, and you can now watch it after it released on Friday, July 25... well, depending on where you live.

The Assassin is about a former contract killer who retires to a remote Greek island to relax her days away. However in quick succession her adult son appears looking for answers, and shortly after assassins come for the women.

The two need to embark on a road trip of Europe as they try to get to the bottom of the attack, while surviving new threats and looking after a charge.

The series is only releasing in a limited way for now, but here's how to watch The Assassin online when it comes out.

How to watch The Assassin

The Assassin is set to debut on Friday, July 25... but only in the UK.

All six episodes of the series will release on Prime Video, the streaming service available to Amazon Prime subscribers, at the same time on that date.

I know what you're asking: what about if you're not living in the UK?

Unfortunately, release information hasn't been shared about the series in any other regions. That includes the US, Canada, Australia or any of the countries the show is set in.

It's possible that The Assassin will release on Prime Video in the future, but precedent suggests that it's far from guaranteed, with the streamer often releasing series in one region but relying on local broadcasters in other regions.

The Assassin is a new Prime Video thriller starring Keeley Hawes.

Out now in the UK on the streaming service, it is created by writing brothers Harry and Jack Williams (The Missing, Liar).

The six-parter sees Keeley play a retired contract killer, whose solitary life on an idyllic island is interrupted when her son arrives. It boasts a great cast, here's our who's who guide to all the key characters...

JULIE (KEELEY HAWES)

Julie is a retired contract killer, whose world is turned upside down when her semi-estranged lad, investigative journalist Edward, turns up. When events take a terrifying turn, however, the pair go on the run together.

"Julie's happy living on her own, when suddenly Edward comes back into her life. They are not completely estranged, as there have been a few texts over the years," says Keeley.

She adds: "Julie is not the coolest assassin in the world, but she’s a great character! She and Edward are actually very similar, although they would never admit it."

The Assassin is a gripping new crime thriller on Prime Video, that sees Bodyguard and The Durrells star Keeley Hawes play Julie, a retired assassin who is now living a quiet life on a secluded Greek island.

However, Julie's world is turned upside down when her estranged son Edward (The Good Doctor's Freddie Highmore) visits from England with some difficult questions. Soon, Julie finds her past catching up with her, and they are forced to flee the island and go on the run.

As mother and son battle for survival, the pair are confronted by a dark conspiracy and a threat that will destroy their relationship forever.

Here is everything that happened in The Assassin episode 4...

The fourth episode opens right where the third left off, with the gun going off in the middle of the night after Damian woke Julie with a gun to her head. The shot that we heard at the end of the last episode was Edward shooting, but missing Damian. However, his shot distracts Damian and allows Julie to overpower him and get his gun. He laughs, saying she won't shoot him, but she shoots him in the stomach. Edward is shocked to see his mum shoot someone, but Julie points out he just also tried to shoot Damian. Damian begs for his life, telling him that he will help Julie if she lets him, but when she asks if he had a backup of his old green laptop, he still maintains that it is gone. He tells her he can help her run and disappear, but she wants to shoot him dead. Edward points out Damian is unarmed now and wants to just leave, which eventually they do, taking Damian's truck with them. Damian is left bleeding on the floor, and when he goes to call someone, he finds his phone is dead.

As they drive through the night to Athens, Edward sleeps and wakes to find they have arrived at a safehouse where Julie used to stay with Pavel, the man who Edward points out tried to kill her at the wedding and who she ended up smashing over the head with a rock. Julie suggests that Edward gets some more sleep, but he is cross with her after losing his fiancée, having people trying to kill him and finding out his whole life has been based on a lie... but she has nothing and tells him tomorrow is a new day.

In France, Kayla arrives home to the villa, and Ezra is there to greet her with her annoying brotherly digs. He asks her how Albania was, and she tells him she just wants to sleep. She notices there are security guards everywhere and is annoyed when Ezra tells her that Jasper called, but he hung up on him. He tells her that they need to find out what Chantaine is and then they can work out if they are actually in danger or not. He tells her about their dad's safe in his office and suggests they try and find out what the bit of paper is. Either way, Ezra points out that they're in good hands with their dad's security guards, but as they're talking inside, one of the guards, Chris, is outside, checking his bank account, which has a huge amount of money deposited into it. Marie calls and asks him if the money has arrived. Chris confirms that it has, and that the 'job' will be done soon, as he looks back at the siblings through the window.

In Athens, Julie makes them a questionable dinner when her acquaintance Sirus arrives and she greets him like an old friend. He is carrying what looks like a pizza box, but when he opens it, it's like a selection box of guns, and Julie chooses which one she wants. She goes to pay him, and he tells her it is a retirement gift. After Sirus has left, Edward questions why his mum needs another gun, but she says it isn't for her - it's for him. They head to an old warehouse so Edward can do some target practice, but it doesn't go well, and he tells Julie he gives up. He doesn't want to go on the run for an indefinite amount of time, but is instead going home to his old life. She points out that while it is her they are trying to kill, they'll use him to get to her.

Back in France, Kayla goes to see Aaron in his office and he tells her he is glad to see her home. She asks him what Chantaine is and if he is the one who tried to have her killed. He says she is his daughter and would never hurt her, but she challenges him to prove it by showing her what is in his safe. He says there are some documents, some collectables and an overpriced watch that is too expensive to wear. When he opens it, the letter on yellow paper is missing and Aaron tells his daughter that he has never heard the word Chantaine before.

In Tripoli, Jasper is at the port where he buys a mobile phone and calls Ezra again. This time, Ezra wants to talk and get more details from Jasper, but as they are talking, Jasper sees a man in a suit showing his photo to people as he searches for him, so he hangs up and hides.

At her safehouse in Athens, Julie is alone now that Edward has left. She turns on the TV and watches the news, only to see a report on the wedding shooting back on the Greek island, and she and Edward are named as prime suspects for the crime. She is horrified as their photos come onto the screen and there is an appeal for witnesses from the police.

Meanwhile, Edward is in the city trying to get the public phones to work. In the end, he asks in a restaurant and calls Kayla, but she cancels the call. He keeps ringing, but when he answers and realises it is him, she throws the phone on the sofa. Ezra picks it up and explains about Jasper and the fact they're in danger, and Edward asks to join the call when Jasper rings back, as being a journalist, he will ask all the right questions. Ezra says yes and they arrange to call later.

As Edward hangs up the phone, he turns round to find the restaurant owner talking hurriedly on the phone, and he sees his face on the screen as the same news report plays out that Julie was watching at the safehouse. Soon, there are police everywhere and Edward realises he has to run and ends up hiding in a random stairwell. The police soon close in on Edward as he gets to the top of the building. Trapped, Edward is forced to jump from one building to the other, finally escaping the police, and he couldn't be happier with himself.

Meanwhile, back in France, Chris comes into Aaron's office and tries to shoot him. Aaron hides under the desk and calls for help. Soon, Ezra appears and overpowers Chris, knocking the gun out of his hand and hitting him over the head with a marble statue. Aaron thanks his son for saving his life, and tells Ezra he underestimated him. He asks if he has heard the word Chantaine and Ezra says Kayla mentioned it - and pretends to be blasé about it. Aaron says that he needs Ezra to stop Kayla asking about Chantaine because if it ever got out, it would be the end of the business and the end of their family. Ezra is shocked when his dad reveals he has told the board that when the time is right, Ezra will take over from him as the head of the company and CGM will be his.

Back at the safehouse, Julie is relieved when Edward comes back and tells him he was so worried about him. They are happy to be reunited and Julie has even been shopping for meat-free sausages, showing she is slowly finding her maternal side. Edward asks why they are wanted people and why the police think they are to blame for the wedding shootings, and Julie says so thinks someone high up would have been paid off to put their names out there. Knowing that Edward doesn't want to go on the run, Julie asks what he thinks they should do next, and he seems surprised that she is asking his opinion.

Edward tells his mum all about Jasper calling Ezra at 5 pm, and the whole Chantaine mystery that Kayla also told him about. He tells Julie that when they googled Chantaine it isn't a place and the only hit was for a marmalade. They use Sean's phone again to search Jasper (once again using Sean's severed thumb to unlock it... only for Edward to point out to his mum they could just change the settings to use their own fingerprints to unlock it!) and Edward dials into the call with Jasper and Ezra. Jasper isn't happy about the fact that Edward has joined the call, but eventually, when Ezra promises to send him some money to get to Athens, he softens and agrees to meet Edward when he arrives.

Back in France, Kayla finds her dad and asks if he is okay after his brush with death. He says there was a woman at the party yesterday in Chris's ear. We know this is Marie, but Aaron is making it his mission to find out. Kayla appologises to her dad for accusing him of trying to have her killed, and they make up - but as she pours him a drink with her back to him, she puts something in his drink without him seeing.

Meanwhile, Ezra is looking through his drug stash for his ketamine, and it turns out that is what Kayla has just put in her dad's drink. Still on a high after his dad told him he would one day be running CGM, Ezra is on a drugs binge in his bedroom, and when he can't find his ketamine, he instead takes lines of coke. He calls Marie, and she pretends to be happy for him - however, she soon gets interested in their conversation when Ezra tells her he knows where Edward is going to be - date, time and location - when he meets Jasper.

Still high from his huge drug binge, Ezra has the business card in his hand that Marie gave him after they slept together at the party. He calls the number and asks for someone to assassinate Jasper, giving the time and location of where he will be the following morning.

Edward and Julie organize some new passports under fake names from a contact of Julie's, while discussing the fact that this meeting tomorrow with Jasper is likely to be a trap. Julie tells Edward to get out of the meeting at any point if he feels uncomfortable, and reveals that when he left earlier, she was worried that he might never come back and doesn't want to think those thoughts again.

Back in France, Kayla's helping Aaron back into the house, who is worse for wear after she put Ketamine in his drink. As he falls asleep on the sofa, she uses the chance to search his office for the letter or anything she can find on Chantaine. When she doesn't find anything, she searches her dad's pocket while he sleeps and eventually finds the letter he was hiding the other day. She reads it and there is a look of horror on her face.

The next morning, Jasper arrives on a boat to Athens, while Edward is in position to wait for him, and Julie is watching from afar. Ezra is on edge at breakfast, worrying about the assassin who keeps calling him for the green light to kill Jasper, which Ezra gives.

We see the assassin watching Edward in the busy square and she is dressed as a gardener to blend in. Julie also watches from afar as Jasper arrives and shakes Edward's hand, telling him he can't believe he is finally here. He asks for the money before telling Edward all he needs to know about Chantaine. Edward reveals he doesn't have the cash on him and Jasper is annoyed. But as Edward tells him he will take him to a safehouse to talk, Julie realizes the woman dressed as a gardener is a hit woman and before she can shoot Edward and Jasper, Julie tries to shoot her, but misses. Edward and Jasper run off, with the assassin following... and all Julie can do is call after her son, who is now in grave danger.

The third episode opens in France with Aaron Cross having a meeting with Michael, his lawyer, and trying to cancel an event they are holding for the local community at the villa. Aaron says they have got too much going on, but Michael reminds him this is an annual event where he butters up to locals so they turn a blind eye to his many business wrongdoings. Michael reminds him that as his lawyer, Aaron can tell him anything in confidence, and if he told him the details of Chantaine, then it wouldn't go any further. Aaron refuses to budge and says it will never, and should never, get out.

Meanwhile, Julie and co have arrived in Albania and are on the hunt for Damian's address that Julie found in Sean's phone. Julie tells everyone no phones, social media or credit cards are to be used until they know what is happening, and they can only use Sean's phone, which she unlocks with her back to everyone. Edward asks how she unlocked it, and he is horrified to see she has Sean's chopped-off thumb in her pocket. Kayla looks like she is about to pass out, and Julie jokes that at least it's an old phone and wasn't one that needs Face ID to open it.

Meanwhile, Ezra gets home to France and is reunited with his dad, Aaron. Ezra hugs his dad, who doesn't hug him back, and then explains that Kayla is with Edward and his mother, who is a hitwoman. Aaron seems unimpressed and tells Ezra he has a call. Ezra tells his dad about the fact Julie was hired to kill Kayla, and Aaron seems unfazed by the whole thing, telling his son he is busy. Ezra questions why his dad doesn't seem to care, and Aaron says he does and that he will call security before walking off.

In Albania, Julie, Edward, Kayla and Luka are in the back of a delivery truck, being taken to the address in Sean's phone. Julie tells Luka that he should go back to Greece as staying with them is dangerous, but he says the life he had before no longer exists and he wants to help them track down the people who killed his friends and family.

Back in France, a woman called Marie (the same woman from the art class in the second episode) is playing video games in the bath when she gets a call from the local mayor telling her that thanks to her generous donation, she has been invited to Aaron Cross's party. She says she is honoured and tells the mayor she will be there.

Still in the delivery truck and surrounded by meat, Julie asks Edward and Kayla where they met. She is surprised to learn that they met at a tennis club. When Kayla is out of earshot, Julie points out to her son that he hates tennis and knows something doesn't add up about their meet-cute story. She guesses he had been looking into Kayla and her family, and he doesn't deny it, begging his mum not to ruin things for him as he actually loves Kayla.

Arriving in Tirana, the gang tracks down Damian's apartment, but once there, they find blood all over the walls and the apartment has been trashed. Julie tells them they need to find Damian's laptop as it has all his contacts and information on it, and while she and Luka search the flat, Kayla and Ed go and knock on Damian's neighbour's door. She doesn't want to speak to them but hands a newspaper that reveals a body was found in the local river and has been named as Damian. Julie doesn't buy it, though, and says they should go to the local morgue and check the body.

Meanwhile, the party at Aaron's has begun and Marie has turned up. She gets talking to the mayor, when Ezra comes and whisks her away, telling her that he is saving her from the boring conversation. She is dismissive of him until he says he is Ezra Cross and she seems to change her tune and is keen to get to know him. She tells him she came to the party because she needs his help finding his sister's fiancé and Ezra seems shocked she wants to find Edward.

In Albania, Luka has gone to get them a car, while Julie, Ed and Kayla head into the morgue via an open window at the back. While Kayla keeps a lookout, Julie and Ed head into the room with all the bodies and search for Damian. Ed tells Julie that he is going to be honest with Kayla about how they met, and she tells him it is his funeral.

They find 'Damian', but Julie struggles to ID him as he has been dead much longer than the papers said. As she continues to look - trying to work out if he knows him by looking at his privates, much to Ed's horror - Kayla comes and says someone is coming and they all rush out of the window and get into the tiny car that Luka has found for them. As they race off, the police follow, and it takes a while, but Luka manages to lose them by hiding the tiny car behind a truck.

Back in France, Marie and Ezra are talking and Ezra guesses she is looking for Ed in connection with his dad. It turns out that Marie is Edward's aunt, meaning her brother is Edward's father and she reveals her brother is still alive. Ezra asks if this has anything to do with Edward's mum and the people trying to kill her, but Marie says she has no idea about any of that. Ezra gets a call from his assistant, Troy, but ignores it. As they talk, they realise they both love the same comic series and before long, they end up in bed together.

Back in Albania, the tiny car has broken down, and while Luka tries to fix it, Ed asks his mum why she thought she would be able to ID him by his privates. He thinks it is because they have slept together and that could mean Damian is his father, but Julie denies it. As Kayla points out that she knows a bit about cars and explains the parts they need to fix it, Luka and Julie head off to get the parts from a local mechanic.

While alone, Ed uses the chance to be honest with Kayla and tells her he hates tennis and only went to the club to meet her after someone left him a huge amount of money in a trust for Anvil Assets and that he worked out there was a link between Anvil and CGM. Kayla is shocked when Ed tells her that he called her dad, Aaron, pretending to be someone else, but he hung up when Ed mentioned Anvil Assets and that's when he went to the tennis club to meet her. She is fuming that their relationship is built on a lie and storms off into the Albanian countryside.

Back at the party, Aaron has a lot on his mind with missing Jasper, the danger Kayla's in and nothing Michael says will appease him. Meanwhile, Marie and Ezra are still in bed together and he is asking her how it works with Julie being an assassin. She gives him a business card and he asks how she has the number. She says that it is a long story and for another time.

In Albania, Luka and Julie come back with the parts for the car, and while Luka fixes it, Julie asks where Kayla is. She is sorry for Ed when he tells her that he told her the truth and she has left. Julie shares a random Latin saying with Ed to try and cheer him up, and he suddenly remembers a tattoo on the dead body's arm that he saw earlier while Julie was trying to ID him and that what appeared to be random words in Latin was actually a 'What Three Words' location. Julie realises Damian isn't dead after all and that he wrote that on the corpse's arm, knowing she would come looking for him. They search on Sean's phone (after using his dead finger to unlock it again) and the What Three Words location comes up as somewhere in he middle of nowhere in Albania.

Back in France, Ezra calls Kayla on Marie's request and she picks up, telling him she is in a car and heading to France. He asks where Ed is, and she says she left him in Albania. He is confused and tries to get more information out of her for Marie, but Kayla gets suspicious that someone else is there and hangs up.

Back in Albania, Luka, Julie and Ed arrive at an abandoned house in the middle of nowhere and it turns out Damian is alive and well.

Meanwhile, back in France, Ezra finally answers his phone to his assistant and he says he has a man on the phone desperate to talk to him - it is Jasper, who Ezra doesn't want to talk to until he says the word Chantaine to him. Ezra realises he is the IT man who emailed him a few weeks ago and he is disbelieving when Jasper tells him that no one is safe when it comes to Aaron and keeping whatever Chantaine is a secret, not even Ezra and Kayla, Aaron's own kids. Ezra hangs up and goes to see Aaron to tell him about the call, but Aaron is reading an old letter from a safe hidden behind some books and he yells at his son to get out, which Ezra does, but not before he sees his dad hiding the letter in the safe.

Back at Damian's place, Julie and Damian catch up, while Luka suggests to Ed that maybe Damian is his dad, which he brushes off. Julie asks who is trying to kill her, and he tells her that a while ago, he got home from his morning coffee and found two men waiting for him, asking questions about Julie. He says he didn't tell them anything, but that one tried to kill him, however, he managed to kill one of the men first while the other one ran away. He then used the body as a decoy for his own death and wrote the What Three Words on his arm for Julie to find. He promises her that he has no idea who sent the men, but knew there was a lot of money involved from what they were saying... and Julie is shocked.

Damian tells Julie that the man who he didn't manage to kill took his old laptop with all his connections on it. He also reveals that he knows Julie is there so that he can help her run away from all this and get a new identity and live hidden somewhere miles away, but Luka corrects him, saying they want to find out who is responsible for killing all the people on their Greek island. Julie realises that running is the best option and tells Luka that maybe that's what they should do. He is fuming that she has changed her tune and tells her he is out before driving off in the tiny car, away from Julie and Ed.

As the episode comes to an end, Julie is sleeping at Damian's house when she wakes to find him holding a gun to her head. She isn't surprised, though, and when he asks where her gun is, it turns out Ed has it, and he is now pointing it at Damian, leaving them in a standoff.

Damian can see that Ed is shaking and not a natural killer like his mother, but as the episode cuts to black, a gun goes of,f and it is unclear who has been shot.

The second episode opens in a rainy London at a graphic novel and comic book art course. A glamorous woman walks in and the teacher asks if she is lost, but she says she's in the right place and says her graphic novel is going to be about Edward.

Meanwhile, back in Greece, we pick up where episode 1 left off and Edward has just introduced Kayla to Julie. Kayla asks why they have arrived all soaking wet, and Julie explains there are gunmen on the island who are trying to shoot them, and Kayla thinks she is joking. When she realises they are being deadly serious, she instructs the captain to head for Athens and takes Julie, Luka and Edward downstairs to get them all some dry clothes.

While she is finding Ezra's clothes for Luka and Edward, Julie tells Edward about being called by someone pretending to be her old boss, and that the target of her job was Kayla. Edward is stunned that his mum was ordered to kill his wife-to-be, and Luka is shocked to hear that Julie is an assassin.

At the prison in Libya, Jasper has been cornered by the Russian gang leader and told he now owes them for grassing to the prison guard. He is just glad not to be killed, but his heart sinks when the gang boss puts a knife in his hand and tells him that now he is going to be the one to kill their rival, Chi Chi.

On the yacht, Luka and Julie meet Ezra and get a tour of the boat, while Kayla asks Edward why gunmen would turn up on a tiny island.

On the tour, Ezra is showing off his 'wellbeing centre' on the yacht when Julie sees a picture of two men on the wall, and Ezra says one of them is his dad, and he owns the family business CGM, which stands for Cross Global Mining. Julie grills Kayla about the work she does for CGM, and she tells her that she works in the charity sector, but before she can get any closer to finding out more, Julie sees a jet ski coming towards the boat. While everyone else is in the yacht's bar, Julie is outside with her gun and looking for whoever was on the jet ski, which is now empty by the boat.

As she hunts the yacht, Julie seems to know who she is looking for, and calls for someone called Sean to come out of hiding... when they come face to face, both with guns pointing at one another, Julie says she could tell it was him by his aftershave. He's been sent there to kill her, and asks who she has upset to be worth so much to kill. Sean tells Julie that he would never shoot her and reveals that her situation is far worse than she could ever imagine and adds that he thinks Damian is dead.

Sean jokes that maybe they can have one last drink together before she disappears off the face of the earth, just as Edward walks in and asks who he is. Sean is clearly in a jovial mood, because he jokes he is Edward's dad, which Edward is shocked by and Julie is annoyed, saying he is just messing and isn't his father.

Sean tells Edward he is in 'waste disposal' like his mother, Julie points out Edward knows she is an assassin, and so Sean tells him he also kills people for a living. Before Edward can completely work out why this random man has ended up on the boat, Kayla comes in and they all make up a cover story about him being a friend of the family who was windsurfing when the shooting started, which Kayla seems to buy.

At the prison, Jasper is gathering the courage to kill Chi Chi as the gang leader ordered. Just as he is about to stab him in the back, one of the other gang members stops him and takes him to the leader. He tells Jasper that he has had an interesting call from someone called Aaron Cross and wants to know why he has said he will break Jasper out of jail. Jasper is thrilled that Aaron has said he will get him out, but his happiness is short-lived when the gang leader says he has to take him and his friend with him when he leaves. He asks how Jasper knows Mr Cross, and he explains he was head of IT for the CGM company, and then he came across something in his emails. He clams up when the gang leader asks what was in the emails and to get him to talk he knocks him to the ground and starts cutting his fingers off.

Back on the luxury yacht, Sean is chatting up Kayla and taking selfies with her, while Edward quietly tells his mum that he thinks Kayla has a right to know she is in danger. Julie disagrees and says they need to work out the whole story before sharing it, and that while she is there, Kayla is safe.

At dinner, Kayla quizzes Julie about her life in Greece as the alarm goes off and they realise Sean is nowhere to be found. Julie tells Edward to keep everyone in the dining room while she investigates. After turning off the alarm, she goes to find Sean as he starts shooting at her. She hides in the kitchens, but he finds her and without her gun, she has to think fast. She uses a cheese fork to distract him and hits him, making Sean drop his gun. She says she thought they were friends, and he says they are, but the contract on her has just tripled and he needs the money. Soon, they are fighting in the kitchen while Edward is left in the dining room trying to fend off everyone's awkward questions about where Julie and Sean have gone. Julie tells Sean she doesn't want to kill him, but he is adamant he wants the money and starts to strangle her. Just as it looks like she is about to die, she reaches the cheese fork and stabs him in the neck.

While everyone in the dining room goes to see what all the crashing is about, Julie uses Sean's lifeless finger to open his phone and text whoever hired Sean to tell them that the job is complete, throwing them off the scent that she's still alive.

As a bloodied Julie is standing over Sean's body, Ezra, Luka, Edward, and Kayla come in and are shocked by what they find, and Julie jokes that there are a few things she needs to explain.

In the prison, Jasper regains consciousness after having his fingers chopped off, and the gang leader says that now he might tell them what he read in the email. He tells them the word Chantaine, which doesn't mean anything to them, but as they're about to get angry, a guard comes in, shoots the gang members dead, and leads Jasper out of the jail.

On the yacht, Edward is trying to explain to Kayla about his mum being a hitwoman and the fact she was hired to kill her. Julie says Kayla needs to think fast about who might want her dead, but Kayla is adamant that she has never had a death threat in her life. Julie says the sooner they work out who is behind wanting them all dead, the sooner the Sean's of this world will stop coming after them and they can get on with their lives. Julie announces they should all go to Tirana in Albania - Edward is baffled by the turn in conversation until Julie says that is the last place she heard Damian - her handler - was living.

Meanwhile, Ezra is in his sauna making a hurried phone call telling the person on the other end of the phone to 'standdown' and that he wants 'her' gone. When he tries to get out of the sauna, he finds it is locked, and Julie appears at the window, telling him that he isn't as quiet on the phone as he thinks. As she grills Ezra about whether he is behind the order for Kayla's death, he won't answer, so she turns up the sauna to its maximum, just as Kayla and Edward walk in and find them.

Edward thinks they should let Ezra out before he roasts, but both Julie and Kayla think he is hiding something, and eventually he admits he said 'I want her gone' while on the phone to their lawyer Michael. Kayla is confused why he wants her gone, and he says he wants her out of the company, and she eventually lets him out the sauna.

Back at the prison, Jasper has been let out by the guard, who is on the phone to someone, who is offering him more money to go with Jasper when he is collected from outside the jail. Jasper tries to make the guard see that Aaron Cross is a powerful man who will kill them both for what they know when the helicopter comes to get them. The guard doesn't believe him at first, but then looks up Aaron Cross online and the men decide to run.

Luka finds Julie in the bar of the yacht, and she takes the chance to apologize to him for the fact all his friends and family have been killed because of her. He says he knows it isn't her fault, and that he doesn't want to go back home now, as everything he has ever known is gone.

In bed, Kayla asks Ed what he is thinking about and he says all the business trips his mother took when he was a child. She asks what he thought Julie did for a living and he explains he was always told she was a headhunter and they laugh.

They talk about the email that she got from Jasper (her dad's head of IT, who we know from the jail), and she tells Ed that the email told her that Jasper had found out something dark that could take down her dad's entire company and that he needed someone brave to help him do it. He said it came down to one word, 'Chantaine'. Once Kayla heads to the gym, Edward searches Chantaine online, but nothing comes up.

The episode moves to a huge white villa in France, where we finally meet Aaron Cross (played by Neighbours star Alan Dale for soap fans). Someone from his security company has come to see him, but he is cross that no one has found Jasper and hits the security man around the face, telling him he just wants him to feel as humiliated as he does with the fact that his company is giving him the runaround.

Back on the yacht, Kayla corners Ezra at breakfast and asks why he wanted her out. He says it was because charitable giving was costing the company too much and so he was trying to get the board to sack her. She seems to believe him, and says he doesn't need to sack her because she quits.

Elsewhere, Julie and Edward wrap Sean's body in plastic and throw him overboard... and Ed tells his mum he will have nightmares about this for the rest of his life. Julie seems to want to say something to Ed, and he tells her to just get on with wharever she has to ask, and she says she knows he is hiding something from Kayla, but he replies that he can't believe she, of all people, is trying to give him advice on his love life.

As they all agree to head to Damian's last known address when they dock, the epsiode returns to the art class in rainy London again and the glamorous mystery woman has finished her comic drawing, and when we see it on screen, it is a drawing of Edward finding out who is father is.

Here is everything that happened in The Assassin episode 1...

The episode opens in Bulgaria in 1994 as someone wearing all black and a balaclava comes out of a bathroom, flushing the toilet behind them. They set a timer on their watch, and as they come face to face with some guards protecting what looks like an abandoned building site, the figure shoots them dead. As the shooter then makes their way up into the building, they shoot and fight everyone in their path, killing guards and security men left, right and centre.

When the assassin finally comes to the top floor, they kill two more men before finally coming face to face with their leader, who they have all been protecting. The leader jokes that if they wanted a meeting so badly, then they should have called or text, but the assassin remains silent. The leader offers the shooter a bag full of cash, trying to tempt them into working for him, but the shooter just kills him, too, walking out and leaving the bag of cash behind.

Once everyone is dead, the shooter takes off their balaclava, and we can see it is a young woman called Julie. She calls someone called Damian on the phone and tells him the job is done, before the alarm she set on her watch goes off. Julie tells Damian she will call him back as she pulls a pregnancy test out of her pocket and swears under her breath as she sees it is positive.

The episode then flashes forward to 31 years later (the present day) in Greece, and Julie wakes up on a beach having drunk a bottle of whiskey. As she packs up her chair and walks off, a teenager hits her in the head with a football. She is cross, hot, and hungover, and challenges the kids to tell her who is responsible for hitting her, but when they don't reply, Julie kicks their ball into the sea.

Meanwhile, a man, Edward, is running through an airport and gets to his gate just as it is closing. He is reluctant to get on the plane, but eventually boards at the last moment.

Back in Greece, Julie gets steaks from the local butchers and is rude to the locals as she jumps the queue, before heading to the port to pick up Edward. They greet one another awkwardly and she struggles to be sympathetic when he tells her that the boat ride over from the mainland has made him feel queasy. As they head off on Julie's motorbike, Edward puts his arms around her so he doesn't fall off, but she tells him to hold the back, because 'he's not 10'.

As they arrive at Julie's house, hidden in the middle of nowhere, Edward goes to his room while she puts the steaks in the fridge. Julie tells him she bought them especially for him as he mentioned wanting to try them last time he was here... but he points out that was four years ago now, and he is now a vegan.

Julie's phone rings and she is shocked to hear Damian's voice on the phone for the first time in 10 years. She questions how he got her number, but he says it doesn't matter, and he has a job for her. She turns it down without even hearing what the job is, pointing out that she is retired now and hangs up.

The episode then moves to a prison in Libya, where a nervous Dutch man is thrown into a jail with gangs of other men who all sense he is an easy target. A man, who seems to have been waiting for him, warns off the other prisoners circling the newcomer and tells the Dutch man to follow him. He takes him to meet a gang leader who says he will look after him in prison, but in return, he needs to help him work his computer.

At Julie's house, she is having lunch with Edward in awkward silence. She tells him that they should go to the wedding on the island tomorrow, as everyone will be there, but Edward is put out that she would rather go to a stranger's wedding than spend time with her own son.

Julie is distracted after her phone call with Damian, but tells Edward she's there now if he wants to talk. He says there is something he has been meaning to ask her, tells her he has been looking into the story about how she met his father, and it doesn't add up because the pub she claims they met in didn't open until after he was born. Edward reminds his mum that he is a journalist, so if she is going to continue lying to him, she might want to be a bit more convincing.

Edward asks Julia what Anvil Assets is, and she says she has never heard of it. He tells her that on his 30th birthday, he got a letter making him a trustee in Anvil Assets and leaving him a significant amount of money, but no clue who might have left it to him. Edward points out that it must be his dad, but Julie tells him to drop it, as his father wasn't a good man. Edward tells her he knows she is still lying.

Julie is saved by her phone ringing, and it is Damian again, asking her to consider the job and that he will double her fees if she agrees to take it on. She reminds him that she is retired and asks if he has forgotten what happened last time. He is adamant that she is the woman for the job and triples her fee, and eventually she gives in and agrees.

As Damian sends the details of the target to Julie, she tells Edward she has to go as she is having trouble with her 'boyfriend' before heading in to locate her guns, which she has locked away under the floorboards.

Later that evening, Julie heads to some dunes and sets up to wait for her target, while Edward is left at her house to wander around. Once she has her target in sight, Julie is about to shoot when she realises something is off with the request. She calls the number that Damian called her on, and she speaks to him again, but says while he sounds like Damian, she knows it isn't him because of the way he is talking. The person on the other end of the phone says they can be whoever she wants them to be, and changes their voice to sound like her before hanging up.

Julie gets home and calls her old colleagues to see if anyone has heard from the real Damian, but they haven't.

Kayla, the woman Julie had been hired to kill, and her brother, Ezra, are on their luxury yacht, where they are talking about how she works for a charitable giving organisation, while he gets paid the big bucks working for their dad, Aaron Cross. As they talk, Kayla asks her brother what Chantaine is, and he seems spooked that she knows the name and asks her where she heard it. She says she asked him first, but he fobs her off, saying there are some things they're not meant to know.

At the prison, the Dutch man, who we now know is called Jasper, is working hard for the gang boss. He is horrified when he hears that they're planning to kill someone in a rival gang as they're 'taking their business'. Jasper tells a guard that this man, Chi Chi is about to be killed and wants to move prisons in return for the information. The guard agrees and he is relieved, but there is a sense that not everything is as it seems.

At the village wedding, Julie tells Edward she knows he has something to tell her and to just come out with it. He reluctantly tells her he is getting married. She assumes it is to a man, but Edward points out it is a woman and she congratulates him, taking his hand awkwardly.

Suddenly, someone sitting behind them is shot in the head, and chaos erupts as wedding guests all around them start being killed. Julie knows the shooter is there for her, and she works out they have five shots before the shooter has to reload. Once five shots are made, she makes Edward run out of the line of sight and uses herself to distract the shooter away from him.

Julie uses dead bodies as shields as the shooter tries to kill her, but she knows how this all works and manages to get into a wedding car and start driving towards where the shooter is hiding in the mountains. She drives the car and crashes it near the shooter on purpose, making it look like she is dead, but when he comes closer to make sure the job is done, she isn't in the car, and instead comes up behind him and smashes him over the head with a boulder.

Back at the wedding, there is carnage with dead bodies sprawled everywhere. Edward is still in his hiding place when his phone rings and it is Julie to tell him the shooter is dead.

At the prison, Jasper is waiting to be moved after telling the guard about who the gang were planning to kill, but out in the yard, he is horrified to see the guard talking to the gang leader, clearly in cahoots with him, and now telling him that he has snitched on him. He runs back to his cell and uses a phone hidden under a bed to call Mr Cross and demand to speak with him. He tells the person on the other end of the phone to remember one word 'Chantaine' and that he needs to get him out of prison as soon as possible, as he is about to be killed by the Russians.

Edward finds Julie in the mountains with the dead man, who Julie seems to know from when she was an assassin, while back at the wedding, everyone is crying over the massacred wedding party, when Interpol arrives looking for Julie.

The doctor who is helping the injured tells the man, Afonso, he wants to see his ID again, as he hasn't even heard from the mainland police yet, so Afonso just shoots him in the head. Everyone starts screaming again as more men in black get out of the car and start killing those who had survived the first shooting. Only one elderly man remains alive and Afonso asks him about the English woman. The old man tells him that she lives in the cottage at the top of the hill, but when he begs for help, Afonso shoots him, too. As the men in black drive away, thinking everyone at the wedding is dead, we see that Luka, Julie's friend from the butchers, is still alive and has been hiding behind the bar.

Meanwhile, back on the yacht, Kayla is grilling Ezra about Chantaine again, and he says he got an email, and Kayla says she did too - but neither of them knows who it was from. Ezra says he knows nothing more than she does, but that he asked Michael about it and he got really weird when he said the word Chantaine. He tells her he knows nothing, and Kayla walks off. But once she has gone, Ezra makes a call and asks why 'it hasn't happened yet' and that 'she is walking around without a clue, and it is too much'.

As they get home, covered in blood, Julie is looking for her gun while Edward demands to know what she is running around like a 'premenopausal James Bond'. She eventually gives in and tells him that she was an assassin and did bad things for money. But while Edward wants more answers, Julie is trying to pack and warn him that someone is coming for them. As Afonso and his men arrive at their cottage, Julie and Edward use a home video to distract them into thinking they're in the lounge, when really they're out front, making their escape on the motorbike.

As they make their getaway through the narrow streets of the village, Julie is stunned when they come across the wedding massacre, and stops for a moment to take in what she has caused. As the streets get narrower, the men are forced to abandon their car and chase the pair on foot, while they go to the harbour and jump in the water, with Luka following.

Eventually, they get to Kayla's fancy boat and climb on board, but Kayla doesn't seem to be too shocked to see Edward, and it turns out she is his fiancée. As Edward introduces his wife-to-be to his mum, Julie hides the fact that less than 24 hours ago, she was hired to kill her son's future wife.

Netflix has just dropped a wonderfully intense new trailer for its major new British series Hostage, starring Suranne Jones, which I intend to binge when it drops on August 21, especially as it's only five parts. Could we have the next Bodyguard on our hands?!

The Vigil actor plays the British Prime Minister who faces an impossible decision when her husband is held hostage. In the trailer, below, we see her captured partner having a gun pressed against his head as he delivers a message that she must resign tomorrow or he will be killed. We then hear a gunshot, with PM Abigail Dalton looking horrified that her husband might have been executed.

We also see her daughter telling her that if anything happens to her dad, she will never forgive her.

Written by Matt Charman (Bridge of Spies, Treason), it also focuses on a power battle between Suranne’s PM and the French President (Julie Delpy), who is also being blackmailed.

Netflix teases: "Forced into a fierce rivalry where their political futures, and lives, might hang in the balance, can they work together to uncover the plot that threatens them both?”

Suranne says: "I'm thrilled to be on Netflix, in something I’m really proud of. It’s been something I've wanted to do for a long time. We'd talked about projects previously, but for me, it was about finding the right thing. Hostage was perfect — me and Matt together, backed up by this brilliant, supportive team. I loved it.”

Matt adds, "I've been dying to find the right story to tell with Suranne and I honestly believe what she’s done with this character is going to blow the Netflix audience away. Jessica Chastain is the latest big name star to headline an Apple TV Plus original series, as she stars in the eight-episode thriller series The Savant.

The Oscar-winning Chastain (The Eyes of Tammy Faye) is no stranger to TV, having in recent years starred in the limited series Scenes from a Marriage and George & Tammy; she received an Emmy nomination for the latter. Could The Savant be her, and Apple TV Plus’, next hit series?

As we wait to find out the answer to that question, we’ve got answers for many of the other big questions around The Savant, from when it’s premiering to who else stars in the show and what it’s about. Read on for all the details.

The Savant is set to premiere exclusively on Apple TV Plus on Friday, September 26.

The first two episodes of the series are going to be made available immediately, with one episode releasing weekly after that. With eight episodes in total, the series will air through November 7.

The Savant plot

Here is the official synopsis for The Savant:

“The tense and thrilling series follows an undercover investigator known as ‘The Savant’ as she infiltrates online hate groups in an effort to stop domestic extremists before they act.”

Melissa James Gibson is the lead writer on the series, which is inspired by a true story that was originally written about in Cosmopolitan magazine by Andrea Stanley, who is a consultant on the series.

The Savant is backed by production companies Fifth Season, Freckle Films, Anonymous Content and, of course, Apple Studios. Executive producers for the series include Chastain, Kelly Carmichael, Alan Poul, James Gibson, Matthew Heineman, David Levine and Garrett Kemble.

Whether it was Harrison Ford’s Jack Ryan movies (Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger) or the Gene Hackman and Will Smith movie Enemy of the State, big-budget spy movies were reliable entertainment back in the day. 2025 new movie The Amateur tried to deliver that kind of classic spy movie this year, but it went largely overlooked by audiences, myself included. But now that The Amateur is streaming on Hulu (and on Disney Plus in the UK), I gave it a watch and discovered a gripping, enjoyable spy movie.

Rami Malek stars in The Amateur as CIA computer analyst Charlie Heller. When his wife is killed in a terrorist attack in London, he goes against his bosses at the agency to get revenge. Rachel Brosnahan, Laurence Fishburne, Holt McCallany, Julianne Nicholson, Caitriona Balfe, Jon Bernthal and Michael Stuhlbarg star in the movie directed by James Hawes, who directed Slow Horses season 1.

The Amateur was released in movie theaters on April 11. It received mixed reviews — including from my WTW colleague Jason Best in his official The Amateur review — but ultimately it did earn a “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics (if just barely). Then, at the box office, the movie failed to make a noticeable dent, never finishing better than as the third-highest-grossing movie in a given day and ultimately falling just shy of a $100 million gross worldwide. But audiences that did see the movie were more positive on it, as suggested by its 88% positive fan score on Rotten Tomatoes.

I could easily see the disconnect between critics and audiences. There’s certainly nothing revolutionary in what The Amateur is trying to say or how it tells its story. But something that may have been overlooked by those who reviewed the movie is that this is a down-the-middle style spy thriller that moves along at a solid enough pace and has enough action and intrigue to be an easy kind of watch that people often want.

Malek is solid as Heller, who may seem meek, but has a determination and simmering anger that is always just underneath the surface. Charlie’s not a super spy, and Malek doesn’t try to have him be. Rather, he’s a man pushed to a breaking point, but will he go past it or manage to keep his soul (and life) intact?

Then you add a solid bunch of fan-favorite supporting actors that all have a moment to shine with a conspiracy and misdirection plotlines to keep viewers engaged.

I would not personally put The Amateur ahead of the other notable (but again, sadly overlooked) spy movie of the first half of 2025, Black Bag, but if you’re more of a fan of straightforward spy movies with a bit more action, then The Amateur is a good fit.

Untamed is a murder mystery on Netflix set in Yosemite National Park, where a woman's death sets special agent Kyle Turner (Eric Bana) on a harrowing investigation filled with dark secrets, brutal crimes and heartbreaking twists.

While Kyle is partnered up with new park ranger Naya Vasquez, they're both forced to confront their own upsetting truths while on the hunt for a killer. One who knows the park as well as Kyle. And Vasquez quickly realizes she needs to learn how to navigate the wilderness quickly if she's going to help in the investigation. Spoilers to follow.

Here's a recap of everything that happened in Untamed episode 6.

The final episode opens on Shane arriving back at his camp. He’s looking for Kyle, but he’s nowhere to be seen. Kyle is escaping through the park and he hears another gunshot. Shane has killed Kyle's horse. At a stream, Kyle pushes wet mud into his wound to pack it. Meanwhile, Vasquez arrives at Kyle's house and no-one’s there. She tries to call and it goes straight to voicemail. She notices his horse is gone.

Shane is tracking Kyle and finds his handprint in the mud. Kyle reaches a height and uses the scope of his gun to look for Shane. Before he can shoot, he spots a glint of Shane’s gun and his own gun is shot out of his hands. Shane takes another shot and misses. Kyle continues to run, leaping into a tree to drop down below Shane who is still shooting at him. He fires back with a handgun and runs.

It cuts to night and Shane is still tracking Kyle, finding his blood stains on the trail. Shane speaks out to Kyle and tells him he should’ve held up his end of the bargain and no-one needed to get hurt. Kyle tries to shoot when he spots Shane, but he’s run out of ammo. He’s almost passed out on the floor and as Shane holds his gun up and tells Kyle to go and see his boy, Vasquez fires a shot from behind. Shane turns around and she shoots him dead.

Kyle wakes up in the hospital. Souter tells him the doctors said he’ll be fine. Vasquez arrives and Kyle thanks her. She tells him they found drugs and cash at Shane’s camp, as well as a crate of guns buried near his tent. She’s ordered ballistics to see if they can get a match for Lucy. Meanwhile, Souter has called Jill to tell her Kyle's doing okay. When she gets off the phone, she says she has to tell her husband something that might change the way he feels about her.

Jill tells Scott that a man called Sean Sanderson killed Caleb. Kyle found out because Shane had put up motion cameras in the park for migration patterns and found images of Sanderson with Caleb. Shane brought the pictures to them and told Kyle he should let him kill him. But, while Kyle wanted to make an arrest, Jill paid Shane to contact Sanderson to blackmail him, meet him in the park and kill him. She said it was that betrayal, more than losing Caleb, that ended their relationship.

Back at the ranger station, Vasquez is being congratulated and even Milch has brought her a cake. The FBI agent wants her to help log ballistics on Shane’s weapons. She asks Milch if he wants to help and he agrees. Meanwhile, Jill goes to visit Kyle in the hospital. She lies next to him in his bed and tells him he doesn’t have to worry about her and that she'll be okay. Then, she asks him to promise he will be to. He says he can still hear Caleb’s laugh and he sees him and they play together still, but he promises to her.

As Kyle is back at home, Esther Avalos comes to see him again. He tells her that around the time Sanderson went missing, he wasn’t at his best and he shouldn’t have led the search. He says he’ll sign any form she needs and when she asks what he thinks happened to Sanderson, he says he wishes he could tell her. That night, Stewart comes to see Kyle by the dock. He offers him a drink, but Kyle says he’s taking a break. Stewart tells him they want Lucy’s body from morgue to help her pass to the other side and be with her mother. Kyle says he can, but tells Stewart that Rory wasn’t her father. He asks Stewart who it was, but he doesn’t know.

Untamed ending explained

The next day, Kyle tells Souter he wants to see if he can find out about Lucy’s life. He wants to fill in the gaps and heads to Yelton, Nevada following the tip from the young guy that came to the station. He reaches the church from the photo, but it’s abandoned. He goes to a house nearby. No-one answers, but the door is open so he goes inside. He finds an old woman sitting in a chair and says he has questions. She doesn’t answer. He presses on and asks about Lucy, or Grace, as she was known. The woman says that Grace will be back soon with the rest of the children. He asks after her husband and she says Lester told her not to talk to anyone.

Kyle looks around the house and the woman tells him the bedroom upstairs is only for her daughter, Faith. He heads downstairs and opens a locked door to the basement. There’s children’s beds all lined up. On one of the bed frames, there’s the carvings that Lucy made in the shack to fight off evil spirits.

Kyle goes to see Faith at the bar where she works. She says she remembers Grace, but didn’t know where she came from. She says her father would get handed these girls for a foster home racket to get government money. She says he barely fed them and kept them locked up. She tells Kyle that Grace cried a lot and always talked about her father coming to get her. She ran away after a couple of years. He gives her his number and says to call if she thinks of anything else. As Kyle goes to leave, Faith catches up with him and tells him that Grace’s dad was a cop.

Kyle calls someone and asks for a favour, off-book. He heads into the park and meets with Souter. He tells Souter that he had the lab resend Lucy’s DNA results and while Souter says he already sent those to him, Kyle says he did, but he had taken his daughter Kate off the list. Lucy was his daughter. Maggie told Lucy in her final days and had asked Souter to get her away from Rory. So, he did. He said it wasn’t hard to put the disappearance on Rory while he took her to Yelton.

He tells Kyle he thought Lucy would be safe there. He said he was trying to protect his family, but then when Rory died he didn’t have a way to make it right. Kyle asks what about when Lucy came back to find him? He says he would’ve lost everything, but that he said he’d help Lucy and she ran away. He says he never saw her again after that day. Kyle tells Souter he needs his hunting rifles to run ballistics. He says he’ll call Dixon to get him to go to his house.

Before he can call, Souter stops him. He says he lent his guns to hunting friends and tries to make excuses. He says he didn’t know Lucy was still in the park until a year ago and she came to his house looking for money, but it became a regular thing and she kept asking for more and more money, as well as threatening him. She wanted him to suffer and he says he was looking after his granddaughter and then Sadie went missing. Lucy had left a note saying she’d taken Sadie to visit Lester. He panicked and got a call saying Sadie had been found by Maggie’s old house. He says he got Sadie home and went after Lucy.

He says Lucy kept running away, so he just wanted to stop her. He said he never meant to hurt her, but when she went down, he knew she would think he was trying to kill her and he wanted to help her, but couldn’t find her. He found her trail going toward El Capitan. She had knelt at the edge of the cliff, just like she did with her mother when she was little, and let herself fall. He said he was just trying to protect his family and Kyle tells him she was his family. Kyle tells Souter he has to make it right, but Souter gets out a gun and points it at Kyle. He says he’ll fix Kyle's suspension, but Kyle starts to walk away. Souter shouts at him to stop, but he won’t because he knows Souter won’t shoot him. Instead, Souter shoots himself. He falls into the river below and his body floats away.

The ceremony for Lucy’s body is held by Stewart and Kyle attends. They release her ashes into the park to unite her with her mother. That evening, Kyle follows Caleb through the park. He leads him down to the dock. They stand there together holding hands and Kyle tells Caleb he’s sorry, but says he’s not ready yet. He says no matter where he goes, Caleb will always be with him.

The next day, Vasquez comes to see Kyle. She knocks but no one answers and she heads inside. The place is empty aside from a box on the floor. A note on top says: "I left you a horse, don’t forget to feed it". Under it, the box is full of Caleb's cars to give to Gael. Kyle is driving away and he waves goodbye to Stewart as he passes by. Vasquez rides her horse through a field of wild deer as Kyle leaves Yosemite National Park.

The penultimate episode opens on the mine shaft at night. The rangers are planning a raid on the lab and when they come across a man, they ask him which way to get there through the tunnels. The man instructs them and they taser him. Before they reach the lab, they hear gunfire. Kyle shoots a man. Then, he shoots another. Finally, when they make it to the lab, no-one is there.

When the rangers check the lockers, an explosive device is activated, blasting them from the room. Two agents go down. Over the radio, they hear gunmen are exiting the mine shaft. Kyle and Vasquez continue through the tunnels and come across another man who they shoot. They find a ladder exit and shoot down a gunman escaping on a quad. Kyle knocks him out.

Lawrence is holding a press conference about the lab raid. They’ve uncovered another camp linked to the trafficking operation. At this camp, three women are dead. Kyle suspects suicide as there are needles in their arms and gold X’s on their wrists. Kyle says the X’s are to tag them as mules. There’s a fourth bed with nobody in it. Underneath is the rucksack with Lucy’s yellow dress and a photo of her mum wearing it with her beside her as a child. Shane turns up and Kyle tells him to leave.

Afterwards, back at Kyle's place, Jill looks after the wound on Kyle's head from the raid. She asks if the men they’ve found are the ones that killed Lucy and he says the pieces fit. Meanwhile, Gael is coloring and he tells his mom that Jill gave him her son’s crayons. Jill offers to watch Gael again. At the station, Kyle questions Simon from the lab. He denies knowing Abuelo and Teddy. Kyle then shows him Teddy’s wallet that they found at the camp. Simon says people drop things when they’re hiking. Kyle then shows Simon the pictures of Lucy Cook’s body and he seems upset, but denies knowing her.

Then, Kyle heads to speak to another one of the drug traffickers. Kyle tells him that Simon just said it was him who killed Lucy. He says he doesn't know who Lucy even is. Then Kyle asks if she crossed them somehow and he again says he doesn’t know who Kyle is talking about. His hands are tattooed. Kyle shows him Lucy’s body, but he continues to deny knowing her.

Kyle then comes to speak to Souter and Vasquez. He says he doesn’t think the drug traffickers killed Lucy Cook. He says when he showed Simon the photo, he looked surprised. Vasquez wonders if Simon had feelings for Lucy, and that's why he reacted to the photo. Kyle argues that the Abuelo and Teddy kills were clean. He argues there was nothing clean about Lucy’s death. And, Simon reacted.

Kyle takes Vasquez through Lucy’s trail. They mark it on a map. They want to know what she was doing near Yosemite Village, where there’s a campground and a few houses. They wonder if she was doing a bad deal. When they visit, they run into Souter’s wife, Mary, and their granddaughter Sadie. Kyle excuses himself as he sees Stewart walking around. He asks him what he’s doing over there and he said he found a rental a month ago. He asks if there has been any talk of Lucy in his community. He says he hasn’t heard anything.

At Kyle's, Jill is looking after Gael. A car pulls up outside. Jill goes to see who it is and it's Gael’s dad. He says he's looking for Vasquez. She says she’s not there and that she can go and ask her husband in the house who’s a federal agent. He says he’ll head down to the station, but before he can leave Gael shouts out. Jill tells Gael's dad to leave and he tries to take Gael with him. She goes into the house and locks the door, telling Gael to hide. She says she’ll call the police, but he breaks in. She tries to fight him off and he strangles her. Kyle turns up just in time and beats him down. Vasquez grabs Gael and comforts him.

Afterwards, Jill tells Kyle she actually felt jealous when she saw Vasquez cuddling her son. Kyle doesn’t say anything back, so she hands him a photo of them all together and goes to leave. Before she goes, Kyle tells her she was perfect. She replies: “Until I wasn’t”. That night, Kyle is called to the hospital where Jill has been admitted after a suicide attempt. She asks him not to tell anyone. In the hall, Jill’s husband tells him her and Kyle's relationship isn’t working as they’re hurting each other. He tells Kyle he needs Jill to survive and Kyle has to help, even if it’s hard for him.

Kyle then heads to the hotel and punches Shane in the face. He tells him he should’ve told her no. Shane tells Kyle he should’ve told her himself instead of crying into a bottle. Kyle pulls a gun on Shane and holds it under his chin, but then he walks off. The next day, Souter arrives at the station. Kyle is there passed out in his car with an empty bottle in his hand. Souter brings him inside and he’s angry at the scene Kyle caused at the hotel. They go to see Lawrence and he tells Kyle he’s been suspended. Kyle leaves and tells Vasquez that it’s over and Agent Dixon will be taking over the case.

Stewart comes to see Kyle at home. He talks about how his people’s spirits run through the land in the park and he hears them all around him. He says he’ll die there, but even if he doesn't, the spirits are within each of them and in the earth, the water and the winds. The FBI come as Stewarts leaves to retrieve the case files and evidence. The agent tells him they're getting pressure to tie Lucy’s death to the trafficking to make it clean cut. Before they leave, Kyle goes to give them Lucy’s backpack but he finds her phone in the pocket. He keeps the bag and lets the agents leave.

Once they’re gone, Kyle tries to turn the phone on but it’s out of battery. He finds a charger and waits, but it needs Lucy’s face to unlock. He goes to the morgue and the doctor pulls her body out and puts drops in her eyes to keep them open. It doesn’t work. The doctor uses formaldehyde to add some heat back into her skin. It works. Kyle unlocks the phone, but says it’s not been used as a phone because it’s not been set up. When he goes to look through her photos though, there’s videos of her in the park and one of a man talking to her. It’s Shane.

Kyle calls Vasquez and tells her to retrieve the phone out of his truck and not tell anyone. He calls Jill and tells her he’s going to arrest Shane. He tells her Shane will want to take him down too by talking about Sanderson. He says he doesn’t have any other choice and Jill tells him maybe it’s a good thing. Kyle heads to Shane’s camp alone, but he’s not there. He looks through his belongings and finds a bottle of the pills. Suddenly, Kyle is shot in the stomach. He imagines his son Caleb whispering into his ear: “He’s coming”.

The episode opens on Lucy. She’s older and sitting at the ledge by her mother’s house. Mr Begay asks if she needs help and she runs off. She goes back to a tent and takes off her nice dress, changing into a top, trousers and cap. Another girl is there, the girl from the squatter camp. She tells Lucy not to help “them”, saying they’re bad people. She goes to the mine shaft Vasquez found and picks up her gas mask before heading deeper into the tunnels.

In the present day, Vasquez asks Kyle what Teddy has to do with everything. He tells her he asked Teddy to ask about the drugs and then this happened. She says her friend in Mariposa police department says they’re seeing more of those pill bottles, but don’t know where they’re coming from. Kyle says he’s heading back to the mine and Vasquez can come with him. Meanwhile, more press are turning up outside the ranger's station. A young guy has come by and tells Milch he knew Lucy Cook when she was little. Milch is dismissive, but tells him he can wait for Kyle.

Vasquez and Kyle head into the abandoned mine shaft. They find a ladder and head deeper inside. Kyle tells Vasquez to close her eyes as hundreds of bats fly out. As they get through the tunnel, they find a bag full of gas masks and some pill bottles. But, as they emerge out the other side of the tunnels, they find a person's jaw with two metal teeth. Kyle says he thinks Abuelo isn’t coming back.

They call in a man called Morris who says the body has been there five or six days. He explains that vultures can fasten up decay, but he says it’s less than a week. He tells them if they want to find more remains, they need to do a ground search. Morris finds some brains against a tree and then Vasquez finds the body in a shallow grave.

They determine that Abuelo was shot at close range against the tree he's partly buried next to. Kyle rides to the squatters' camp. He chucks Glory the evidence bag with Abuelo’s jaw in it and she says he was depressed when he left and thinks he killed himself. Kyle tells her he thinks whoever shot him might be responsible for other deaths in the park. At this point, a team of rangers turn up to search to whole camp and move them on.

Lucy’s friend is walking back and hides behind a tree as she sees the rangers at the camp. Kyle tells Souter they’re looking for something that’ll make Glory help them with information. Milch throws him a bag of four bottles of the pills. Kyle takes Glory back to the station for questioning. She says she doesn’t know where the drugs came from and doesn’t care what happened to Abuelo. She also says that Lucy didn’t mean anything to her either. Glory explains that she worked the same job for decades and was then fired. Shortly afterwards, she found out she had cancer, but had no insurance. So, she left the real world and she's still here nine years later. Kyle leaves.

Souter hands Kyle Lucy’s DNA results, but there’s no Rory Cook listed in her results. Souter thinks Rory didn’t know he wasn’t the father otherwise, he wouldn’t have taken Lucy in after Maggie died. Kyle has other names he can look into from the file. Then, a ranger tells Kyle a young guy is waiting to speak with him.

The guy introduces himself as Matt and says he’s there to talk about Grace McRay as he knew her, but Lucy Cook as they know her. He said he grew up in Yelton, a town in Nevada, and she used to live down the street from him with a pastor’s family. He shows Kyle a photo. He says he knew her about ten years ago and that Pastor Gibbs and his wife said that she left to go live with her real family.

Vasquez finds Lucy’s friend hiding behind a tree. They talk and Lucy’s friend explains that Lucy used to go in the mine a lot to forget who she was and all her pain. She said they met when they were 16. She says Lucy lived in a few places, but ran away and they had a spot together on Garrison Ridge for a few years. But then Lucy fancied someone and disappeared a lot. His name was Terces. Secret spelt backwards.

She explains the guy got Lucy into all sorts of bad things, but her friend never got involved because it scared her. Lucy would come back beat up and then she never came back at all. She’d see her in the distance, dealing with Abuelo and they had a spot in a gulch to drop drugs for cash. She said she saw her a week or so ago on her own doing a drop. She mentions Abuelo was also with a guy called Pakuna a lot, a friend. Before she goes, Vasquez asks where the gulch is.

That night, Vasquez takes the ice box from the gulch to Kyle's house. She explains how the girl knew Lucy Cook and what she told her. She says if Abuelo was already dead, someone else must’ve been picking up the drugs. She mentions Pakuna and says he’s at the station. Kyle goes to the hotel and sits down at the bar next to Shane. Kyle asks him about Abuelo and asks what his cut was. He denies it. He says he had nothing to do with it. He brings up Lucy Cook and says maybe Kyle will do better on the case this time around.

Vasquez picks Gael up from daycare and as they arrive back at their apartment, she locks the door. Gael comes out of his room and he’s got a new toy police car. Vasquez asks where he got it and he runs back to his room. As Vasquez follows, her ex is sitting on Gael's bed. He says she didn’t tell him she was moving up there and she says her lip was too swollen to talk. She tells him he can’t stay there.

He threatens that if she wants him to go back to LA, they have to come with him and tell the police he had nothing to do with the money. She said she won’t lie for him and they’re not going. He says he needs his badge back and sits down on Gael’s bed. She tells Gael to go and run a bath.

When Gael leaves, Vasquez's ex tells her that if she lies, he can get his job back. He tells her he’s staying, they’ll go tomorrow and then it’s over. She agrees, but says he’ll never see them again after that. She threatens if he comes near either of them she’ll shoot him in the head. Vasquez goes in the bathroom with Gael and shuts the door. The father waits but as he comes in to check on them, they’ve escaped out the window. He runs out the apartment as they’re driving off.

Shane and Kyle are still at the bar. Kyle asks Shane if he knew Lucy. He doesn’t answer, but Kyle says he’s going to find out if he’s involved. Shane asks him and then what will he do? He throws over Esther Avalos’s card to Kyle and tells him she came and asked him a lot of questions. Shane says maybe he should tell her what he remembers about the first time he saw him... or the last. Souter turns up and asks to speak to Kyle. They head outside and Kyle is drunk, but Souter has taken a spark plug from his car so he can’t drive. He tells him to stop beating himself up about the deaths he’s not responsible for and with his own memories.

When Kyle gets home, Vasquez and her son are sitting on his porch. She explains that she has a restraining order on her partner and thought he wouldn’t drive that far to get to them. She says it’s just a power move and he’s not interested in them. What he wants is to clear his name. Gael starts trying to play with a box of Caleb’s toys, but Kyle stops him. He says they can stay on his couch.

The next morning, Jill comes to Kyle's to look after Gael. She thanks him for asking her. Vasquez and Kyle take a helicopter to search the park. Kyle tells Vasquez to get Milch to let Pakuna out of the station, take him back to the meadow and cut him loose with nothing. Milch goes into the cell and asks for Gary Horowitz. He says his name is Pakuna. He lets him out.

Pakuna takes the trail to the mine shaft and heads in. When he gets down there, a team is working. He tells them the rangers came and took everything and that they found Abuelo. The main guy asks what he told the rangers and he says nothing. He says he’s not like Abuelo and won’t screw them over. The guy says he'll only do that if he gets what he wants. He hands over a bottle of pills and money to Pakuna. Hanging up on the side is the mask the person was wearing when they strangled Teddy to death. When Pakuna heads out, Kyle and Vasquez are waiting for him.

The episode opens on a girl painting rocks with her mom. They’re talking about death and her mom tells her they'll cross over to El-o’-win after life. The mom has a port and tube on her chest. She tells her daughter to come back there if she ever has anything she wants to tell her once she’s passed over. Blood drips from her nose onto the rocks and she says she’s going to walk back to the house. Her daughter says she’ll come back in a minute. But, as she stands there on her own, a man walks up behind her. She turns and waves at him.

Vasquez explains that Lucy Cook went missing from her father’s home inside the park. Kyle says it was his case at the time, but there was no sign of forced entry. There was blood on the rug and they all thought her father killed her. Vasquez notes that her father, Rory, was then killed less than a year after Lucy went missing. Kyle says someone hunted him down and killed him, but that he didn’t kill Lucy. They talk about her mother, Maggie, who worked in the administration office until she got cancer. She died three weeks before Lucy’s disappearance, but was in hospice. So, Lucy lived with her father and stepbrother, James, who now lives in Fresno.

As Kyle leaves, he asks someone on the phone to pull up cell phone activity for Teddy for the last 48 hours. Jill is waiting for him in his truck outside. She hands him her camp bracelet and a list of camp counselors and people involved with the camp when she worked there. She tells him that when he asked her the other day if she’s happy, she said she was, but she’s not.

She can’t stop missing Caleb and thinks about things she did like when he wanted ice cream and she was rushing him. She tells him he can call her anytime he wants. Kyle tells her about the investigator who came to talk to him about Sean Sanderson. She asks if they have anything new, but he doesn’t know. She leaves.

Vasquez gets in the car and Kyle has the results for the bottle of pills. A mix of coke, ketamine, peyote and more. He wants Vasquez to check in with the Mariposa police department to see if they’ve ever come across it. Vasquez tries to apologize about Kyle's son, but he turns the music up.

They go to visit James Cook. Kyle won’t let Vasquez come in. He knocks on the door, but nobody answers. A man comes upstairs and walks straight past him. He looks back at Kyle and when he reaches the end of the hall, he starts running. Kyle chases him, but loses him amongst discarded furniture under the building and pulls out his gun. James jumps up behind him and tries to hit him with a wrench. Vasquez holds her gun up behind James and stops him.

James tells them to tell Hector he can get the money this week. Then, he realises they’re police. They head back to his apartment and Kyle asks him about Lucy. He says he told him back then that she was in her room and then she wasn’t. When they ask if he’s seen her, he says not since 15 years ago. Vasquez shows him the photo of her body. They look around his apartment and find drugs. So, he asks James about the bottle of pills. He doesn’t know anything, so they leave.

Kyle tells Vasquez that both Lucy’s father and half-brother didn’t know she was missing until the next morning. Vasquez wonders if one of them hit her and so she ran away. Kyle says it’s not always that easy. As they drive, Kyle asks about Vasquez’s job in LA. She says she was a beat cop and Kyle tells her he knows her husband was suspended for stealing cash in a drug bust. She says they were never married. She wants to know why Kyle moved away from New York’s FBI field office. He explains how he grew up on a ranch and wanted to be out in the wilderness.

As Kyle and Vasquez arrive at the ranger’s office, Lawrence is holding a press conference about Teddy’s death. Afterwards, Lawrence is angry that people are dying in the park and he’s not being told why. He tells Kyle he’s raised serious concerns with NPS in Washington about his work. He says he’s going to order a formal request to get Kyle out of his park. When Lawrence leaves, Kyle goes to Souter and tells him he thinks both people were murdered and that it’s connected.

Kyle gets a message from forensics telling him that Shane’s bullet is not a match for the one that shot Lucy. He says out loud: “Clears the gun, not the shooter”. Caleb is in the car with him and then he’s gone. That night, Kyle heads out in a storm. He goes to the hotel to see Lana and they make love in one of the rooms.

Afterwards, Lana asks what’s up with Kyle and he says the case he’s on is bothering him. He said he was just about to jump into the lake and disappear with Caleb, but he got a call about a girl who fell off El Capitan. He says he felt like that was a message but, now he feels like he was just scared. If he’d done it, he would’ve died instead of Teddy. Lana tells him to give her a call next time he wants to go to the lake.

Vasquez drops Gael off at daycare. She makes sure she’s the only one who can pick him up. Elsewhere, Kyle pulls up on Stewart and invites him fishing. He gets a call from Vasquez, but ignores it. Kyle asks Stewart about Lucy’s mother, Maggie. He says he knew her back in the day. He reveals that the girl who died was her daughter, Lucy. They go to visit a man called Mr Begay and ask about Maggie. He says that the property he lives in was hers back in the day. Kyle asks if he’s seen a girl around and he says he hasn’t.

When shown the photo of her body, he says he doesn’t recognize her. Stewart hands over some of Maggie’s belongings that she left behind. Stewart also says Mr Begay said he saw a girl on the ridge months ago, but didn’t get close enough. She ran when he tried. Kyle shows Stewart the carvings and he says they’re old Miwok magic to keep evil spirits away, or evil anything.

Meanwhile, Vasquez has taken one of Kyle's horses and she’s looking for the squatter camp. Elsewhere, Esther Avalos goes to see Jill. She wants to ask questions about Sean Sanderson and whether she found anything unusual about the investigation. Esther brings up Jill and Kyle's son dying and Jill asks what he has to do with it. Esther says she’s trying to get a picture of Kyle's state of mind. Jill dismisses her. Vasquez continues to search for the camp, but spots a man wandering through the park on his own. Shane is watching her through the scope in his hunting rifle. Vasquez follows the man and finds a tunnel in the rocks with a footprint outside.

Elsewhere, Kyle goes to visit the tattoo artist that Teddy saw before he died and asks about the message he sent him, telling him to stay away from the gold tattoo. He won’t say why. But, he reveals the gold tattoo was like a brand. He shows him the pills. He says he's heard about them, but makes sure he knows nothing about it. Vasquez follows through the tunnel and finds an old mine shaft. Inside, there’s a gas mask hooked up on the side. As she walks through, the ground breaks beneath her and she falls.

Kyle arrives home and finds Vasquez’s car abandoned. He then realizes one of his horses is gone. Meanwhile, Vasquez wakes up and screams for help. She walks down a tunnel structure looking for a way out. It’s raining and Kyle goes out looking for her. Vasquez finds a tight crawl space with a gap at the end where she can escape. But, as she gets halfway through, she can’t fit under the rock and is trapped. The rain water is pooling under her.

Suddenly, she hears Kyle's voice and he tells her she has to stop fighting and slow her breath so she can get herself out. He can’t reach her, but he tells her to calm down and she’ll be able to get unstuck. He tells her to think about her son. She manages to relax and crawls backwards out of the tunnel. He tells her he followed her tracks and she shows him the gas mask, marked with a gold X.

Vasquez goes to pick her son up from daycare. Jill gets out of bed and searches for Sean Sanderson on the internet. Kyle sits at home looking at a photo of him, Jill and Caleb. He searches through Maggie’s things and finds a photo of Lucy. It cuts to young Lucy hiding from her violent father. She makes carvings on the wall and someone comes in her window. When she turns around, she smiles and waves at them.

The episode begins with the young woman hiking through the woods before her death. She stops at a stream to cool off, but rips her bag as she leaves, dropping bottles of pills on the floor. She stops to pick them up then hides her bag in a cooler hidden under a tree. As she walks away, a shot fires and hits her in the leg. She drops to the ground, panicking.

In present day, Kyle is watching the news reporting on the young girl’s death on El Capitan. They bring up the disappearance of Sean Sanderson, as a reflection on the safety of the park. Kyle heads back into the park with his horse looking for clues. He reaches the same stream and finds one bottle of pills that the woman didn't pick up. They’re marked with a gold cross on the lid, like her tattoo.

Back at the station, Souter asks Vasquez how her son, Gael, is doing settling in. Souter asks how Kyle is doing and she tells him about the Wildwood connection to the case. Souter takes her to a storage room and shows her a box full of the bracelets found on the woman. He explains that they were kept in case the camp ever started up again. He says lots of people have grabbed bracelets over the years.

Kyle calls Vasquez and asks for the toxicology results, but she says she hasn’t got them yet. He tells her to demand for them to come back today. She tells him about the box full of bracelets at the station. He tells her it’s still not a waste of time.

Kyle then heads down to a bait shop and breaks into the worker, Teddy’s, car and pulls out some drugs. Teddy comes over and Kyle asks him about the bottle of pills he found since he deals. He says he doesn’t know whose it is, but says he’ll ask around. He then shows him a photo of the dead woman and he says he doesn’t know her. Then, Kyle asks him again about the drugs. Again, he doesn’t know, but says he’ll ask around. Kyle takes his drugs and says he’ll give them back when he brings him something.

Kyle then visits a local hotel and speaks to the woman on the desk, Lana. She knows him and she tells him he should’ve called her back. He apologizes, but says he’s there for work. Souter meets him by the elevators and Kyle asks him about the carvings on the wall. He doesn’t know much about them and they sit down for some lunch.

Souter tells Kyle he had a call from a friend who runs a park up at Glacier looking for an agent. He suggests it to Kyle as a temporary job. He asks Souter whether Jill is involved in this suggestion and Souter says it was his idea, but says because Kyle has lived out of boxes in his cabin for years it might be good to get away. Kyle insists he’s fine. Souter tries to bring up Caleb and Kyle leaves.

Meanwhile, Jill is showing a couple around a home. Kyle calls her, so she steps out. He asks her not to tell Souter when he calls her late at night. He tells her it won’t happen again. The woman looking round the home asks if Jill has kids, she says she has two girls and a little boy.

Kyle arrives home and Esther Avalos is waiting for him, the investigator for the Sanderson disappearance. She says she’s working on the family’s wrongful death suit. She wants to ask some questions. First, she wants to know about Sanderson's car that was found parked on a service road outside the park. She says they weren’t able to track his movement into the park. Kyle explains that tracking someone on foot isn’t easy. She brings up that three campers told the county sheriff’s department that they thought they spoke to Mr. Sanderson after his disappearance at the North Pines campground. He says they searched and didn’t find anything.

She then explains she now has a note where Sanderson had written to meet CA at North Pines. She asks if it's related and he asks if the note was dated, she says it wasn’t. She wants to know why he did a search if he didn’t feel there was a crime there. He said he was just pitching in. Finally, she asks Kyle if he was in a proper condition to lead the search and she brings up that he took leave for a personal matter a few months before. He tells her he was fine.

Kyle heads into his house and recalls himself walking through the park shouting Caleb’s name. He finds a discarded shoe and then sees his son’s body face down in the lake. He’s disturbed by Vasquez knocking on the door. She tells him toxicology came back clean. They head out on the horses and Kyle takes Vasquez to a squatter village to ask about the pills. As they approach, the people start booing. A woman called Glory speaks on their behalf. Kyle asks after Abuelo. Glory says he’s on a spiritual walkabout. They show the pills to the people in the camp and ask around with the photo of the girl.

Glory asks Kyle why De Niro came looking for Abuelo, too. When Kyle asks who De Niro is, she says his Deer Hunter ranger who also came by the night before asking questions. Vasquez keeps asking around and notices a young girl looking at her, but when she tries to talk to her the men around her tell her not to. Kyle calls Vasquez away when things get heated. Vasquez tells Kyle that the girl knew something and he says that she won’t talk with the group around her. He sends Vasquez back the way they came and Kyle heads off into the park.

On her way back, Vasquez gets distracted by wild deer and gets off her horse. But, the horse and deer get scared and run off in different directions, leaving Vasquez alone. One of the deer drinks water from a stream and is shot. The hunter takes it back to camp and finds Kyle there waiting for him. Kyle asks where he has come from. Shane, a wildlife agent, says he needed to get the deer and Kyle says he heard from the station that some of them have chronic. Shane says he’s cleaning them out before it spreads. Then, Kyle asks about the coyote attack. Shane says he’s looking into it.

Kyle then asks Shane what Abuelo has to do with the sick deer. Shane gets defensive and Kyle says he just has some questions for him. When asked, Shane says he doesn’t know anything about the girl who died. Kyle says he finds it strange that Shane wanted to ask questions to Abuelo at the same time as him. Shane says it's a coincidence. Kyle picks up Shane’s rifle and shoots it into a nearby tree stump. He takes the bullet casing from the tree and leaves.

Vasquez picks Gael up from the nanny and as she’s leaving, the nanny asks if his dad got in touch with Vasquez. She tells Vasquez he called her asking. She gets in her car and texts Gael’s dad, telling him to stop playing. Meanwhile, Teddy heads into a tattoo parlor and asks the guy working there about the gold tattoo.

There’s a guy sitting on the couch behind him and the tattoo artist looks at him, but tells Teddy he doesn’t know what he’s talking about. The artist tells him that it can’t be real because you can’t put gold on skin. He tells him to leave it and leave the shop. As Teddy does so, the artist texts him telling him to stay away from the gold tattoo.

At the Mariposa police station, Kyle asks the lab technician to run the bullet casing he got from Shane with the one he found by the girl. The technician says he’ll get him the results by tomorrow. That night, Teddy goes to a cannabis dispensary and when he gets in his car to leave, a person wearing a mask pops up in the back. Half his hand is tattooed and he strangles Teddy to death.

It cuts to Souter’s wedding anniversary party. His granddaughter, Sadie, asks Gael if he wants to play on the swings. Vasquez lets him. Scott, Jill and Kyle are talking to Souter and Mary and Vasquez asks Milch who she is. Milch tells her she’s Kyle's ex-wife and that she married a dentist a few years after Caleb died. Vasquez didn't know that Caleb had died. Milch then explains to her that Kyle had a children’s hiking group and Caleb wandered off. He says someone grabbed him. Two days later, Kyle found him. They never found who did it.

Vasquez goes to talk to Kyle. She makes small talk and then Gael comes back so she introduces him. They shake hands and Jill is watching. He tells Vasquez he’s heading back to work. It cuts to a group of teens rock jumping into a lake. One of the girls swims along and Teddy’s body floats out. Back at the station, Vasquez is working through the camp archives. She comes to a name, Lucy Cook. Meanwhile, Kyle finds vehicle tracks in the park and takes a photo. When Vasquez looks up Lucy Cook, she finds news articles about a 7-year-old girl who went missing in Yosemite.

Kyle follows the tracks and then finds a shoe print. He takes the girl’s shoe from his bag and compares the print. Vasquez sends a photo of the 7-year-old girl and the dead girl’s photos to Sam to run facial recognition. Kyle continues to track the prints and finds hair in a nearby tree. He’s disturbed by a phone call and goes to see Teddy’s body. Then, Vasquez calls him. It’s a match. She tells him she’s found Jane Doe.

The episode opens in Yosemite National Park. Two men are climbing up the side of a cliff. Suddenly, a woman’s body hurtles from the top and down between them, crashing into the rope holding them together. The force pulls the first man off the cliff and the second man follows, but the rope is pulled tight, suspending the two men and the woman’s body against the cliff. Her body is tangled between them, putting a strain on the rope.

It cuts to Kyle Turner with his son. They’re inspecting bloody tracks on the floor of the forest and talk about how people ride horses and use arrows to kill animals to remain undetected. He tells his son they can't catch them now. Someone calls his radio and he tells his son he has to head to work.

At the cliff, the two climbers have been saved by a rescue team. The officers are talking about how the weather can change quickly up there. Kyle arrives on the scene and one of the rangers, Milch, describes him as the ISB, the Investigative Services Branch, Special Agent Turner.

Kyle walks past the rangers and they describe the woman as a female, guessed to be early 20s, accident or a jumper. The other ranger introduces herself as Naya Vasquez. Kyle asks how the climbers knew the victim and Vasquez explains that she just fell down. Kyle then asks the climbers if they heard anything above them, like voices. They say no and that they didn’t see anyone either.

Kyle looks over the side of the cliff and sees the woman’s body hanging there. Vasquez explains that there was lightning, so the rescue teams didn’t want to risk it. Kyle starts kitting himself up and says that there could be damage from birds or rain or the rope could give way if they wait until morning. Milch says they should let her fall rather than risk going down there since that was her plan anyway. Kyle asks Milch if the woman told him her plan.

Then, Kyle hooks himself up to the ropes and abseils down to the woman's body. He takes photos on his phone. Then, he puts on gloves and inspects her heavily injured leg and hand, but her bracelet falls down to the ground below. He gets a radio call warning him that the lighting is approaching, so he gets pulled up with the woman's body.

Milch, Vasquez and Kyle continue to inspect the body. Milch suggests maybe coyotes are responsible for the damage to her leg and Kyle points out she has black cottonwood in her hand and there’s nothing like that up on the summit. He determines she’d been running for a while. Vasquez notes she doesn’t have any shoes on either. Milch suggests she was on drugs. Kyle asks them if she looks familiar from the park, but Milch says he doesn’t recognise her face.

Kyle walks around the area and finds a bloody handprint on one of the rocks. He walks further down and finds two bloody footprints. The storm is approaching and Turner’s horse gets nervous, so they leave. It cuts to the county coroner’s office. The body is labelled as Jane Doe. The doctor is explaining to Kyle and Captain Souter that the injuries are mixed, making it hard to determine whether they happened before or after the fall. But, he says the injury on her leg definitely happened before and he guesses from a canine. They also note she has a gold glittery cross tattooed on her wrist.

Kyle tells Souter that he thinks he’s seen the woman around. He also notes that the damage to her feet suggests she walked in shoes that weren’t her size. And he says there were no animal tracks near the top of the trail, so the canine injuries must have happened way before she fell. They head back to the ranch station. Souter asks Kyle to be nice to his rangers and notes he smells like bourbon. To this, Souter asks Kyle if he’s stumbling again, and if he is, to talk to him.

Park Superintendent Lawrence asks them what the verdict is on the jumper. Souter tells him they’re waiting for test results. Lawrence holds up his phone and shows them that people are already talking about it online, including mentioning it was an animal attack. But, Souter says they’re not sure that’s exactly what happened. Lawrence is worried it’ll stop people visiting the park.

Kyle tells him he’s not employed by the park, but then Lawrence says that he’s getting bothered about the Sanderson investigation because Kyle isn’t getting back to the investigator, a woman named Avalos. Souter asks what the point is of reopening the Sanderson investigation since the man went missing six years ago. Lawrence says it’s about money and that the lawyer has new information to discuss, but he needs Kyle to talk to her.

That night, Kyle heads to the site below where the woman fell. He finds a bead with the letter A on it. He finds more beads and eventually the bracelet that fell off her wrist with the letters TKE and A on it. It cuts to a woman is sleeping and her phone rings. It’s Kyle and he asks if the kids are asleep and tells her there’s a meteor shower on Thursday. He says it's the biggest one of the year, meaning a lot of wishes.

She asks him if he’s drinking and he says he was just thinking how they all used to snuggle under a blanket together to watch it. He says he’s just telling her in case they want to watch where they are. She tells him to go to sleep. Once she hangs up, a man rolls over in the bed next to her and says since Kyle works in the national park, he should be better with boundaries. Kyle sits on the dock, drinking.

The next day, Vasquez knocks on Kyle's door. She says she called, but since he didn’t answer she had to come because Captain Souter is getting pressure about the Jane Doe. Kyle's annoyed. Vasquez follows him inside and says there’s no match for her prints or as a missing person. He asks after park employee records, but she says they’ve not heard back yet, so he tells her to push again.

Vasquez tells Kyle they’re also checking gate video to the park. She picks up a framed photo of his son and asks him about him. Vasquez explains she has a son, too. She also notices the boxes everywhere and asks if he’s just moving in. He asks her about her son’s father and she says it’s not her husband, just his father. He saddles up his horse and offers Vasquez one. She refuses.

She then asks if they’re going to check the campsites and entrances and Kyle explains over 100,000 people come through a week. He saddles up a horse for her, despite her reluctance, and they head out into the park. He takes her down the path Jane Doe would've taken to the summit. They approach an old hunting shack. He notices a bloody footprint outside. Inside, some bloody rope. Vasquez suggests Jane Doe was hiding in there and Kyle asks why she didn’t stay.

Vasquez thinks maybe she was scared or hurt. There are carvings on the wood that Kyle says are fresh. He takes a photo of them. Vasquez notices some more and Kyle says they should check for missing Indigenous girls. Vasquez opens another door and there’s a bear outside. Kyle shoots his gun and scares it away.

As they continue on the path, there’s a bird pecking at a bloodied spot on the floor with discarded shoes. Kyle says it was coyotes. Vasquez bags up the trainers. They continue and find a puddle of blood and then Kyle notices a ricochet scar on a nearby rock. Then, he notices a bullet lodged into a nearby tree. He calls the doctor inspecting the body who then realises there is a bullet wound in her leg, but it was missed because of all her injuries. Kyle and Vasquez speculate that someone was chasing her, or that she shot herself.

Kyle tells Vasquez to alert wildlife control about the coyote attack, but to miss out the details to anyone, including Captain Souter. There’s a realtor’s car outside Kyle's home when they get back. It’s his ex-wife, Jill. She notices that he still has his belongings boxed up. He asks if her husband sent her because of the late night call he made. She says Scott is understanding. Kyle tells her about the girl that died in the park. He mentions the gold tattoo. Then, he asks her how happy she is and she says she’s as happy as she can be.

At home, Vasquez is coloring with her son, Gael. They laugh and play together, talking about their days. It cuts to Jill on the phone, she’s telling Souter that Kyle is acting like he wants to tell her something but he can't. She asks Souter how his wife, Mary, is doing and he says their daughter Kate has had another relapse and is in trouble and so his granddaughter Sadie is back with them. Jill says she’ll see him at their wedding anniversary party. She hangs up and asks her daughter to help make dad's birthday cake and she says he doesn't like cake.

Meanwhile, Kyle is looking at the photo of the carvings he found in the shack. His son asks why she drew them. His son has drawn him, his mum and Kyle on horseback and tells his dad it’s how it used to be. Kyle notices the beads he collected from the young woman’s bracelet have been rearranged to spell ‘Take Hike’ and his son thinks his mum did it. Kyle starts going through a photo album and finds a picture of Jill standing with a group of kids at a camp called Wildwood Nature Adventures.

Kyle explains to Vasquez about the photo and the bracelet saying all employees and attendees got them from the camp that ran between 2008-2011. He asks her what her next move would’ve been as a cop in LA. She says she’d pull up official park files to look for a list of names from the camp. Then, cross check for connections to current employees. He tells her to let him know if she finds anything and drives off.

Kyle drives up next to park ranger Stewart pushing his bike up a road and they talk like old friends. He says he’s going fishing and asks if Kyle wants to join him. Kyle says he’s busy looking into the girl’s death. Stewart says he heard she was a tourist that fell. That night, Vasquez is looking at the old Wildwood website photos. Her son comes to sit with her and while they’re at the laptop, a message pops up saying she can’t pretend he doesn't exist as he’s his son, too. She shuts her laptop and locks her door.

Kyle is looking at the bullet casing and photos of the girl when his son shouts and says it’s time to go outside and look at the stars. At Jill’s, she’s having dinner with her husband and two daughters. She goes to sit outside to watch, too. Turner and his son sit out on a blanket to count them.

Meanwhile, Souter watches with his wife and granddaughter. Sadie asks Souter about a photo of him, Kyle and a boy. He tells her it’s his godson, Caleb, but she never met him because he passed away several years ago. It cuts to Kyle lying on the picnic blanket alone, Caleb no longer there, and his friend Stewart brings him a fish he caught. They share a drink and talk about the stars.

Untamed is a gripping new murder mystery on Netflix, and with all six episodes landing on the streaming site as a box set, the show has arrived just in time for a weekend of binge-watching.

The chilling thriller is set in Yosemite National Park (although filmed in Chip Kerr Park in Canada), where a woman's brutal death sets special agent Kyle Turner (Eric Bana) on a harrowing investigation filled with dark secrets, brutal crimes, and heartbreaking twists.

When Kyle is partnered up with new park ranger Naya Vasquez (Lily Santiago), who's come to Yosemite with her young son for a new life, they're both forced to confront their own upsetting truths while on the hunt for a killer.

But, it soon turns out that whoever has blood on their hands knows the park just as well as Kyle, and this leads to Vasquez realizing she needs to learn how to navigate the wilderness quickly if she's going to help in the investigation.

Speaking of the new series, co-showrunner Mark L. Smith (American Primeval, The Revenant) told Netflix: "Everyone thinks of Yosemite as this beautiful place with all the vistas and all the scenery, but we were trying to touch on the dangers that are just beyond that.

"I love stripping all the cheats away, stripping all the more modern tools that people can use. It really gets down to the character and what they can find within themselves."

As well as Lily Santiago and Eric Bana as Naya and Kyle, the show boasts a stellar cast, including Sam Neill as Chief Park Ranger Paul Souter.

Souter has been the chief park ranger in Yosemite for half his life and is a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and friend to Turner. He's comfortable in all facets of his job, whether it's dealing with crime inside the park or with the bureaucracy around it - but does all this make him the perfect person to catch a killer?

Other key characters include Kyle's ex-wife Jill, who still has a close bond with Kyle despite their divorce, and Wildlife Management Officer Maguire, a former army ranger who’s something of a loner.

Netflix has a brand new movie that may have people rethinking how bad their apartment really is, as Brick is a psychological thriller about a group of people who become trapped in their apartment building and need to find a way out. The new Netflix original movie debuted on the streamer on July 10 and could be the next big international movie on the platform.

A noticeable trend on Netflix this year has been US and UK subscribers embracing more foreign-language movies. Previously this year Ad Vitam, Bogota: City of the Lost, Honeymoon Crasher, Counterattack, iHostage, Bullet Train Explosion, Exterritorial, Bad Influence, A Widow’s Game and KPop Demon Hunters all appeared in the weekly top 10 of most watched titles in the US, with many enjoying at least a little bit of time as the most-watched movie on Netflix. Whether they’re opting for dubbed versions or embracing subtitles, it’s nice to see Netflix subscribers giving international movies a shot.

They can do so again with Brick, which hails from German director Philip Koch and stars Matthias Schweighöfer, whose other credits include Netflix’s Army of the Dead, Army of Thieves and The Swimmers, as well as Oppenheimer and Pixar’s latest movie, Elio. Also starring in the German-language movie are Ruby O. Fee, Frederick Lau, Salber Lee Williams, Murathan Muslu, Sira-Anna Faal, Axel Werner, Alexander Beyer and Josef Berousek.

It has been announced today, Wednesday, July 9, that the highly acclaimed thriller Code of Silence has been renewed for a second season by ITV, and filming gets underway next year.

Code of Silence season 1 featured Rose Ayling-Ellis as deaf caterer Alison Woods, who is drawn into a dangerous investigation to lip-read conversations between a gang of criminals for the police. Soon, Alison finds her world is turned upside down as her life becomes increasingly more complicated.

The first series, which boasts an impressive all-star cast including Kieron Moore, Charlotte Ritchie, Andrew Buchan, Nathan Armarkwei Laryea, Joe Absolom, and Fifi Garfield, received four and five-star reviews. The series was described as 'a landmark moment for inclusion and representation' and hailed as 'the must-watch thriller of the year.'

Rose Ayling-Ellis’s performance was particularly praised, while the production team and ITV were recognised for delivering a drama with genuine impact and talkability.

The series captivated audiences, with the first episode watched by 7.5 million viewers, and over 20 million streams have been recorded across the full box set since it launched on May 18, 2025.

Annabel Scholey (Rivals, The Split) heads the cast as no-nonsense cardiothoracic surgeon, alongside Sam Palladio (Nashville) as charming anaesthetist Jacob.

Aggy K Adams (The Witcher), plays surgical nurse Mia, while Sendhil Ramamurthy (Heroes, The Flash) plays wealthy Leo, who had a romance with Charlotte many years before and has returned to visit his ailing father Viraj (EastEnders’ Madhav Sharma), to the annoyance of his brother Hari (Invasion and Happy Valley’s Shane Zaza).

Hugh Dennis (Outnumbered) reprises his role from the first season as voyeuristic neighbour Alan, alongside Janine Duvitski (Benidorm) as dog-loving local Gloria.

David Mackenzie may be one of the more underrated directors working right now, and he seems poised to show why again with his latest, Relay, a thriller on the 2025 new movie release schedule.

Mackenzie’s modern-day western Hell or High Water came almost out of left field back in 2016, but it ultimately scored a Best Picture nomination (four Oscar nominations in total). Could Relay, which stars Riz Ahmed and Lily James and has already drummed up some buzz, have a similar reception?

Relay release date

Sneaking into movie theaters in the final weeks of the summer season, Relay premieres in the US on August 22. At this time there is not a confirmed release date for Relay in the UK.

Late August contains a number of intriguing movies this year. In addition to Relay, it includes the Spike Lee and Denzel Washington reunion Highest 2 Lowest; Darren Aronofsky’s latest Caught Stealing; and the Benedict Cumberbatch, Olivia Colman marriage comedy The Roses, to name a few.

Ahmed and James headline the Relay cast as a fixer and whistleblower who get caught up in a dangerous conspiracy.

Ahmed is an Oscar-nominated actor for Sound of Metal (and an Oscar-winning producer for the short film The Long Goodbye) who was most recently seen in The Phoenician Scheme.

James, best known for Cinderella and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, most recently starred in the movies Greedy People and The Iron Claw.

The other notable cast member listed for Relay is Sam Worthington, the Avatar star who will return with the sci-fi franchise’s latest movie, Avatar: Fire and Ash, in 2025.

Relay is a co-production between Black Bear, Sigma Films and Thunder Road Pictures. Gillian Berrie, Basil Iwanyk, David Mackenzie and Teddy Schwarzman are the producers on the movie.

With their quirky residents, scenic settings and relaxed removal from city hassles, small towns are certainly packed with charm. But underneath that sense of community and slower pace of life could linger a more sinister side, as evidenced by Lifetime's latest thriller, premiering tonight on the crime-loving network.

Debuting Sunday, July 6 at 8pm Eastern Time on Lifetime, Kidnapped in a Small Town sees mom Sarah (played by Alicia Blasingame) setting off on a road trip with her daughter Ruby (Chelsea Rose Cook) to drop the teen off at college.

When their car breaks down in the middle of nowhere, however, "a passing driver, Allie, offers a ride into town for help, and though hesitant, Sarah lets Ruby go while she waits for a tow truck," reads the official movie synopsis, per Lifetime. "But when Sarah arrives at a nearby diner to meet them, Ruby is missing, and Allie claims they’ve never met." Soon, Sarah is on a desperate chase to track down in her daughter from the mysterious abductor.

Along with leads Alicia Blasingame (Family Ornaments, Bodyguard Seduction) and Chelsea Rose Cook (Secret Life of the Surgeon's Wife, Twisted Sister), the Kidnapped in a Small Town cast includes Joesy De Palo as Ruby, Wynn Reichert as Harold, Bryce Hagan as Manny, Holly Anspaugh as Allie, Karra Robinson as Angie, Gary Hood as Michael, Joe Gatton as Sheriff Hoffman, Megan Massie as Lily, Gene Park as Dave and Clay Crump as Reggie, among others.
