Few movies have freaked yours truly out quite like The Silence of the Lambs—in case you somehow missed it these past four decades, the 1991 Jonathan Demme-directed horror classic stars a spine-chilling Anthony Hopkins as the captured cannibalistic murderer Hannibal Lecter, whose homicidal insights are sought out by young FBI trainee Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster) to help hunt down a serial killer known as "Buffalo Bill" (Ted Levine). While the psychological thriller is filled with terrifying scenes, none are quite as hair-raising as the one-on-one interrogations between Starling and Lecter, with the former bravely trying to get inside the mind of a monster.

And the only thing scarier than fiction is real life. At the center of Hulu's new true-crime docuseries Ted Bundy: Dialogue with the Devil is a very The Silence of the Lambs-esque premise: A series of conversations between the notorious American serial killer Ted Bundy and investigator Robert Keppel that took place while the murderer was serving on death row in Florida from 1984 to 1989, in the hopes of catching the Green River Killer, a phantom who murdered 49 women in the same Seattle area where Bundy claimed many of his victims a decade earlier.

Bundy's own crimes have been heavily documented over the decades, from Netflix's Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes to HBO Max's Ted Bundy: Mind of a Monster to Prime Video's Ted Bundy: Falling for a Killer. But the new six-part Hulu doc, which premiered on August 7, has a unique perspective in that it contextualizes Bundy's horrific actions and uses his twisted expertise to delve deeper into serial killer psychology as a whole.

And just like in Demme's drama, it's those unsettling direct conversations between the killer and the detective that provide the real horror, with their cat-and-mouse talks playing out until Bundy's execution in January 1989.

Netflix has added Stolen: Heist of the Century, an intriguing-sounding documentary about arguably the world's most audacious diamond robbery, which seems like something out of Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible movies.

In February 2003, a gang of thieves broke into the seemingly impenetrable Antwerp World Diamond Centre and snatched gems estimated to be worth between $100 million and $500 million. The police were baffled by how the villains got into the vault, which had every protection imaginable, including thermal-motion sensors, a magnetic field, and a lock with millions of possible combinations. The crooks didn't set off any alarms, and their crime wasn't discovered until the following day.

And, amazingly, most of the diamonds have still never been found!

The methods by which the thieves pulled off the breathtaking heist and the current whereabouts of the diamonds are still the subject of great debate.

Netflix teases: “An ingenious gang of master jewel thieves from Italy known as The School of Turin were behind the audacious heist — now, after more than 20 years, the world will finally learn how they pulled it off."

In the trailer (above), someone involved with the case is heard saying: "No one could imagine that the diamond district could be cracked. This isn't the story of a crime. It's more like the script of a movie.

"How they did it with no force, no violence, we had no idea."

The makers have interviewed the Antwerp detectives who cracked the case and also the alleged criminal mastermind behind it. Netflix says it will give a "blow-by-blow account of what really happened”.

It’s from the producers of The Tinder Swindler and American Nightmare, so it suggests it will be a great production.

We know the crime required a lot of planning and a string of ingenious methods to evade the huge security around the diamonds. What happened afterwards is just as interesting as the heist, as the criminals went about trying to profit from their crime while the police played catch-up and started to gather evidence.

Netflix will be hoping it matches the huge success of the Guy Ritchie true crime documentary The Diamond Heist, which became a global smash on the streaming service earlier this year.

The three-part documentary, which easily makes our best shows on Netflix guide, is about the attempted theft of £350 million worth of diamonds, including the famous Millennium Star, from London's Millennium Dome back in 2000.

ITV has released first look pictures for Sheridan Smith's major new drama, I Fought The Law.

The hugely popular star plays Ann Ming in the "heartbreaking and inspiring real-life story" of a mother who, driven by unimaginable grief, finds the strength to challenge the centuries-old Double Jeopardy Law to see her daughter’s murderer finally brought to justice. The four-part series is based on Ann Ming’s book "For The Love of Julie".

Sheridan says: "I am so honoured to have been asked to play the role of Ann Ming, a mother so determined to fight for justice for her murdered daughter that she spent 15 years campaigning for the Double Jeopardy Law to be changed. She is a truly courageous and remarkable woman to whom we all owe a debt of gratitude.”

ITV teases: "The drama follows the tragic, moving, and deeply inspiring journey of the Ming family after the murder of their beloved 22-year-old daughter, Julie. In the wake of multiple police failings, Ann relentlessly pressures the authorities to uncover the truth and ensure the man responsible is brought to justice — despite initially seeming he will get away with murder.

"Driven by love, grief, and extraordinary determination, Ann and her family campaign tirelessly in Julie's name. In her steadfast and indomitable style, Ann takes on the entire justice system — challenging the Crown Prosecution Service, the Law Commission, prominent defence barristers in television debates, the Government, the Lord Chancellor, the Attorney General, and two Home Secretaries — as she bravely ‘fought the law'."

Ann Ming, who acted as a consultant on the production, said: "I am very pleased that ITV and Hera Pictures will tell the story of my campaign to overturn the Double Jeopardy Law. My daughter’s killer was wrongfully acquitted, and I wasn’t going to let this law stand in my way of getting justice for Julie.

"I’m overwhelmed that Sheridan Smith will be playing me. Having such an iconic and talented actress portray me is truly wonderful.”

It's far from the first time Sheridan has taken on a serious subject. In the hard-hitting BBC1 drama Four Lives, which was based on a true story, she played Sarah Sak, the mother of Anthony Walgate, who was the first victim of real-life serial killer Stephen Port. She also starred in The C Word, a true story based on the book by journalist Lisa Lynch, which documented her battle against cancer.

I Fought The Law will air on ITV and STV and be available to stream on ITVX and STV Player this autumn, followed by I Fought The Law: The Ann Ming Story documentary.

In 1991, four teenage girls were brutally murdered at a frozen yogurt shop in Austin, Texas. What happened that night shook not only Texans but Americans as a whole, a case that continues to mystify and torment those affected all these decades later. And now the shocking real-life story is the subject of HBO's latest true-crime docuseries The Yogurt Shop Murders, with the first installment premiering tonight, August 3 at 10pm Eastern Time. (The remaining episodes of the four-part series will debut subsequent Sundays at the same time.)

Directed by Margaret Brown, The Yogurt Shop Murders "revisits the case through interviews with investigators, victims’ families, and the two men who served time for the murders," per HBO.

Along with exploring law enforcement practices and raising "complex questions about press coverage and the power of suggestion on memory," the series also delves into "the lasting effects of grief and the enduring impact of unrelenting crime coverage in mainstream media through poignant interviews with those closest to the crime and investigation."

Airing tonight, the debut episode will introduce viewers to Amy Ayers, Eliza Thomas and sister Jennifer and Sarah Harbison, four Texan teens who were at the yogurt shop where Jennifer and Eliza worked during closing time but never returned home that evening. As police investigate what happened to the young Austin locals, and how several teenaged boys could be involved, the girls' respective families grieve, and a community comes together to weather unimaginable loss.

To tune into The Yogurt Shop Murders tonight, you're going to need access to HBO. Thankfully, the channel is available with most cable TV subscriptions. Though Bob Trevino Likes It may have slid under the radar of many, those that have seen the indie dramedy have loved it, as evidenced by the movie's 95% "Certified Fresh" score from critics and 98% positive score from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Ferreira stars as a young woman who befriends a man online who shares the name of her father, forming a surprising but heartwarming connection.

The Monkey (2025)

• Horror comedy begins streaming on Hulu August 7

2025 has been a big year for Stephen King, as The Life of Chuck, The Institute and soon The Long Walk have all been adapted for the screen. But my personal favorite from these King offerings so far this year is the absurdly fun The Monkey. Theo James stars as twins whose lives have been tormented for years by a toy monkey that has been a part of a number of surprising deaths over the years. When the monkey resurfaces, they have to figure out how to stop it before someone else they love dies. If you're a fan of outrageous, gory deaths, then this will be a must-watch.

Ted Bundy: Dialogue with the Devil

• True crime docuseries centered around notorious serial killer lands on August 7

The crimes of Ted Bundy have been well documented, but did you know that after he was arrested he assisted in an investigation into another murderer? That is the focus on Ted Bundy: Dialogue with the Devil, as it recounts Bundy's work with Detective Robert Keppel looking for the Green River Killer. The docuseries features never-before-heard-tapes that give a rare insight into the mind of Ted Bundy.

FX's Necaxa

• The Welcome to Wrexham sibling show premieres on August 8

Welcome to Wrexham has documented one of the most incredible stories in sports the last few years, as actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac (nee McElhenney) have buoyed the Wrexham team and town. But can lightning strike twice?

That's the question in FX's Necaxa, where Reynolds and Mac offer their support to Eva Longoria as she helps a recently relocated Mexican soccer club and tries to lift if to success.

Shanghai Noon (2000)

• Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson comedy rides to Hulu on August 8

As Shanghai Noon, the classic western comedy starring Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson, celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, you'll be able to stream in on Hulu starting this week. Shanghai Noon is a great blend of the martial arts, western and comedy genres, with Chan and Wilson having great chemistry. The sequel, Shanghai Knights, also lands on Hulu this week, though if you're picking between the two, go with the original.

Always leave it to Lifetime to add a little suspense to your Sunday nights, and tonight's new thriller is sure to do just that: Premiering Sunday, July 27 at 8pm Eastern Time, Vicious Murder is the latest addition to the crime-loving channel's ever-expanding catalogue of gripping thriller titles.

Having first streamed over on Tubi in October 2024, Vicious Murder gets a primetime spotlight tonight, with a cast led by The Real Housewives of Atlanta star Drew Sidora (who joins a long line of Housewives personalities that have segued into Lifetime stardom, including NeNe Leakes, Denise Richards and Lisa Rinna). Per Lifetime, the official logline reads: "With his crypto empire on the brink, a businessman conspires to murder his wife and steal her fortune but uncovers a web of deception in the process."

Along with actress-singer Drew Sidora as Riley Maywood, the Vicious Murder cast also includes Tremayne Norris as Nathan, Arica Adams as Bianna, Andre Chetverikoff as Calvin, Stephen Barrington as Jesse, Kim Flowers at Katelyn, Apryl Jones as Chrissy, Masika Kalysha as Sandra, Brandon Joseph as Detective Ramsey, Tomek Kosalka as Bernie, Francis Nuovi as Kevin, Loren Paul as Police Harris, Anton Peeples as Detective Duncan. The 90-minute mystery was directed by Chris Stokes, with a screenplay co-written by Stokes and Marques Houston.

I generally enjoy Guy Ritchie movies, though one of his more recent efforts I have missed and need to play catch-up on is Operation Fortune (aka Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre). The director reunites with long-time collaborator Jason Statham for this action comedy, where a team of secret agents (which includes Aubrey Plaza and Bugzy Malone) brings in a well-known actor (Josh Hartnett) to try and infiltrate the ranks of an arms dealer (Hugh Grant). This seems like the perfect popcorn fare for summer streaming.

Dope Girls season 1

• The latest London-set period crime drama debuts on Hulu July 29

If you are a fan of Peaky Blinders or Hulu's previously released 2025 new TV series A Thousand Blows, then Dope Girls could be right up your alley. Starring Emmy-winner Julianne Nicholson, the new series is a period crime drama taking place in London shortly after World War I, where women look to assert their power by helping launch the night club scene in London's Soho. All episodes of the new series are going to be available immediately to stream.

Memoir of a Snail

• Oscar-nominated animated movie lands on Hulu July 29

Oscar-winner Flow and the Oscar-nominated The Wild Robot were among the biggest animated movies of last year, but flying under the radar was Memoir of a Snail. One of the five nominated movies in the Best Animated Feature category at the Oscars, this story about a melancholic woman named Grace Pudel (voiced by Sarah Snook) earned a 95% "Certified Fresh" score on Rotten Tomatoes, and in addition to Snook features the voice talent of Eric Bana and Jacki Weaver. Fans of animation should definitely check this one out.

Mr. & Mrs. Murder

• You can start watching the true crime docuseries as of July 30

The latest ABC News docuseries focusing on a salacious true crime is Mr. & Mrs. Murder. This series details a case where a husband goes missing, with rumors beginning to swirl that he was eaten by alligators, though no remains were found. But when his wife marries his best friend, suspicions begin to rise over what may have really happened. Many involved with the actual case will share their insights in this documentary that should be catnip for true crime fans.

The Devil Wears Prada (2006)

• Fan-favorite Meryl Streep movie hits Hulu on August 1

The internet has been abuzz recently as the first looks at The Devil Wears Prada 2 have started to come out. We have to wait until 2026 to see the long-awaited sequel to the fashion movie, but you can stream the original on Hulu this week.

Anne Hathaway stars as an aspiring writer who gets a job at a high-profile fashion magazine, where she works for the demanding and manipulative editor-in-chief played by Meryl Streep. It's a favorite role for the three-time Oscar winner (and one that she earned one of her many Oscar nominations for), but also features fun turns from Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci.

Old School (2003)

• Hilarious college comedy is enrolls on Hulu on August 1

August means college kids are heading back to campus, so why not celebrate by watching one of the funniest college comedies ever made? Old School stars Will Ferrell, Luke Wilson and Vince Vaughn as three friends who decide to start their own fraternity, despite the fact that none of them is in school anymore. Attempting to stop their good-natured debauchery is the uptight dead, played by Jeremy Piven. This is one of the movies that made Ferrell a star, and he absolutely steals the show.

Ready or Not (2019)

• You can find the horror/comedy on Hulu starting August 1

Another movie that is getting a sequel in 2026 that is streaming on Hulu come August, is Ready or Not, the horror/comedy from the Radio Silence directing team of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. Starring Samara Weaving and Adam Brody, the movie centers on a bride who marries into a wealthy family that has a strange tradition to welcome people into their family, one that has terrifying results. It's campy and one of the more original and fun horror movies of the last 10 years.

While a lot of the true crime genre is made up of documentaries about grisly cases or unsolved mysteries, 2025 new movie Roofman looks to offer a little light-heartedness for fans.

Based on the true story of Jeffrey Manchester, Roofman features an all-star cast led by Channing Tatum and comes from an acclaimed director, making it one of the more noteworthy movies on the docket for the rest of the year.

Roofman arrives exclusively in movie theaters this October, with the movie set to be released on October 10 in the US, and a week earlier in the UK on October 3.

Derek Cianfrance directs Roofman, which actually marks his first featuring directing gig since 2016; though he did direct the HBO miniseries I Know This Much Is True in 2020. Roofman behind the scenes

Paramount Pictures is the studio behind Roofman, made in association with Miramax, FilmNation Entertainment, Von Waaden Entertainment, A High Frequency, Hunting Lane, 51 Entertainment and Limelight Production.

Producers on the movie are Jamie Patricof, Lynette Howell Taylor, Alex Orlovsky, Duncan Montgomery, Dylan Sellers. Cianfrance and Tatum, meanwhile, are among the executive producers for the movie.

Netflix has added Cocaine Air: Smugglers at 30,000 Ft, a true crime documentary about a case that gripped the French press and people.

On March 20, 2013, four French nationals were arrested on a private jet at the Punta Cana airport, Dominican Republic.

Two were ex-air force pilots, and two were passengers on board the plane destined for Saint-Tropez.

But, and here’s where it gets fascinating, on board was found 700kg of cocaine stored in 26 suitcases! The drugs had an estimated European street value of 20 million Euros.

Netflix teases: "None of them has the profile of an international drug smuggler and no one knows who the luggage belongs to. Who isn't telling the whole truth? Who's involved in the case? And what is hiding behind the mountain of drugs?"

In the trailer for the four-parter, one of the interviewees ponders who brings 26 suitcases for two days in the Dominican Republic?

What happened in the end?

The two pilots were arrested in the Dominican Republic, but while on bail, they fled in mysterious circumstances to the French Antilles. The two pilots were sentenced in absentia in the Dominican Republic to 20 years in jail.

They were then re-arrested, and they went on trial in France. They were sentenced to six years in prison by a French court.

In a further twist, the two airmen were then acquitted on appeal in 2021.

Incredibly, the judiciary at one point examined former French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s phone records. Sarkozy is interviewed in the Netflix documentary. Back in 2015 it was reported his lawyers hit out about his phone records being examined when the only link was that he had flown with the airline at the centre of the probe.

Is Cocaine Air: Smugglers at 30,000 Ft. worth a watch?

Yes, if you’re into your true crime documentaries, it sounds like a great one. It appears that all the key people have been interviewed, and it promises to be an engrossing watch. Whether it can get to the truth is another matter.

“When I was reading it, I'm like, ‘This cannot be real. Like, this is not real, right?’" actress Jana Kramer told ABC News about the script for Lifetime's latest true crime thriller, Kidnapped by a Killer: The Heather Robinson Story, which premieres on the cable network tonight, June 7 at 8pm Eastern Time.

And it is, shockingly, a very true story, about a Kansas City's teen whose whole world comes crashing down when she learns that her uncle is actually a serial killer responsible for the murders of multiple women in the area, including her biological mother.

Per the movie's official synopsis: "Heather Robinson (Rachel Stubington) grew up in a loving family in Illinois and, by the time she was a teen, had long known that she had been adopted as an infant by her parents. But in 2000, the then-15-year-old’s world was shattered when she learned that the man she knew as her uncle, John Robinson (Steve Guttenberg), was actually a serial killer accused of murdering multiple women in the Kansas City area, including her biological mother. After her uncle’s arrest, Heather learns the shocking truth about her birth mother’s disappearance."

Along with Rachel Stubington as Heather and Steve Guttenberg as Uncle John, the cast of Kidnapped by a Killer: The Heather Robinson Story includes Jana Kramer, Ross Crain, Deja Dee, Jackie Sanders, Rose Decker, Sarah Hudson, Lily Talevski, Robyne Parrish and Molly Miller.

Guttenberg, known for his roles in classic comedies like Police Academy and Three Men and a Baby, spoke to Remind magazine about going against-type to play a violent killer in the new Lifetime drama. “It’s such a great opportunity to be able to go outside your wheelhouse,” he said. “And I think that’s the classic nature of acting — people want to see you pop up through different holes. They want to see you surprise them.”

“To me, it was a story about destruction and what one man can do, [how] one man can change so many lives [through his actions],” the actor added.

After Germany’s Exterritorial and Spain’s Bad Influence rose up to the No. 1 spot on Netflix’s daily Top 10 movies in the US and UK for a time, another movie from Spain has become a popular watch on Netflix — A Widow’s Game, a mystery crime movie based on a true story.

A Widow’s Game follows a murder investigation where the young widow is the prime suspect in her husband’s death. The movie is directed by Carlos Sedes, whose notable credits include directing multiple episodes of the Eva Longoria Apple TV Plus original series Land of Women, while the cast features Carmen Machi (Broken Embraces), Ivana Baquero (The Shannara Chronicles) and Tristán Ulloa (Warrior Nun).

While A Widow's Game has proven to be a popular watch since it debuted on Netflix on Friday, May 30, the movie’s critical reception has been so-so. On Rotten Tomatoes the movie doesn’t have an official score, but critics that have weighed the majority gave the movie a “Rotten” rating.

Whether you’ve watched A Widow’s Game and are in the mood to watch another crime thriller on Netflix, or if you’re debating if you want to give A Widow’s Game a try but are wondering if there is something else worth watching, I’ve picked three crime thrillers on Netflix to consider.

The Good Nurse (2022)

Part of the draw for A Widow’s Game is that it is based on actual events, as true crime is a very popular genre for many. So with that in mind, The Good Nurse is another true crime movie available on Netflix to check out.

Jessica Chastain stars as a nurse who begins to suspect that her new co-worker, played by Eddie Redmayne, may be responsible for not only multiple deaths of patients in their hospital, but has been committing similar crimes at other hospitals for years. The story is based on Charles Cullen, who confessed to intentionally killing 29 hospital patients that he cared for, while some estimate the real number could have been in the hundreds.

The Good Nurse is “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes and features an effectively creepy performance from Redmayne as its main highlight; Redmayne ended up earning Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations for his performance.

Rear Window (1954)

If it’s the mystery that intrigues you, then there may be no better option on Netflix right now than the Alfred Hitchcock classic Rear Window.

The iconic movie stars Jimmy Stewart as a professional photographer confined to his apartment thanks to a broken leg. To try to escape boredom he watches his neighbors, only to eventually suspect that one of them may have killed his wife. But can he prove it?

Rear Window is one of my personal favorite Hitchcock movies because not only is the story thrilling, but it is also a perfect example of why Hitchcock is one of the most revered directors of all time commonly referred to as “the master of suspense.” The tension and iconic moments that he is able to capture with a story set entirely in a single room is extraordinary.

Woman of the Hour (2024)

Another story based on a true event, Woman of the Hour stars and is directed by Anna Kendrick (her feature directing debut) and focuses on a woman who unknowingly got matched with a serial killer on a 70s era dating show.

One component of A Widow’s Game is that the story is told through three different perspectives. If that is something you find intriguing, then you’ll likely be interested in what Kendrick does in Woman of the Hour, where she intercuts the dating show that serves as the throughline of the movie and revisits some of the murders of the killer in times before and after the dating show.

Critics really liked this one, with Woman of the Hour earning a stellar 91% “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes.

The loss of a loved one is devastating enough—but add a funeral home engaging in morally questionable and inhumane practices and that tragedy becomes a downright scandal. Such is the case with the Lamb Funeral Home, the family-owned mortuary in 1980s-era Pasadena that's at the center of HBO's latest true crime docuseries The Mortician.

Premiering tonight, June 1 at 9pm Eastern Time (with new episodes debuting on subsequent Sundays at the same time), the three-part documentary series "chronicles a trusted family-owned funeral home that hid behind a façade of decency and propriety to take advantage of loved ones at their most vulnerable moments," reads the official show synopsis, per HBO.

"In the early 1980s, David Sconce, scion of the Lamb family, took over the family business and sought to exploit the deceased in numerous ways to expand their earnings," the synopsis continued. Sconce was convicted for multiple crimes all stemming from his bizarre business decisions, like hiring hitmen to attack rivals and organizing mass cremations, betraying the trust of people who expected him to care for their deceased loved ones.

The darkly gripping series—which was directed by Joshua Rofé and produced by Hollywood star Jonah Hill—features an exclusive interview with Sconce, newly released from prison, which gives insight into the lucrative multibillion-dollar mortuary industry and what can happen behind closed doors. With emotional interviews with families of the victims of the Lamb Funeral Home and revelations from former employees, The Mortician hauntingly details the scandal that shook Southern California in the '80s.

To tune into the premiere episode of The Mortician tonight, as well as the next two parts of the documentary series, you're going to need access to HBO. Thankfully, the channel is available with most cable TV subscriptions. Netflix has added Cold Case: The Tylenol Murders, a new three-part docu-series about the unsolved deaths of at least seven people in Chicago in 1982, which fascinatingly features an interview with a key suspect.

The victims, including a 12-year-old girl, died after they took Tylenol, a brand of paracetamol, laced with cyanide. The series, added today [Monday, May 26], reopens the case and investigates the various theories behind what actually happened.

"Innocent people were poisoned for no reason, there was terror, there was fear," comments one contributor in the trailer.

The suspect: James Lewis

James Lewis was a suspect in the poisonings, and he gave the makers of Netflix's new documentary an interview, aiming to clear his name shortly before his death aged 76 in 2023.

He always denied having played any part in the Chicago deaths. He did, though, serve 12 years in jail for sending an extortion note to the manufacturers demanding $1 million to stop the killing.

The makers told Fox News Digital that this is James Lewis's last known interview about the case. Director Yotam Guendelman told Fox News Digital: "For those two days, the vibe in the room was good. We asked him the hard questions, and we talked about it. But there was a moment when we started asking harder questions, one after the other. We caught him in a few lies, and [he] then snapped for a couple of minutes.

"It became really scary. And for the first time, you can see someone who, even though I do think he tried not to do the worst in his life, when you put him in a corner, when he feels he’s up against the wall, he becomes scary for a second. And then he changed back to his sweet, weird self a few minutes later."

In the trailer, James Lewis is seen with a bottle of Tylenol and says to the interviewer: "You think I'm going to open this and get my fingerprints all over it?"

The docuseries also explores other theories about what might have happened and the possibility that there were more victims who are unaccounted for. Someone comments in the trailer: "The investigation was problematic from the start."

It remains unclear if the case will ever be solved.

Cold Case: The Tylenol Murders is on Netflix now.

Crimes explored over the six-episode season include a case involving multiple unidentified bodies found in a barrel that are linked to a predator of women and children decades later; killings of multiple gay men; and an amateur sleuth who uncovered clues leading to a likely killer and a murderer of 12 black women who eludes authorities until chilling video evidence is found.

Tonight's premiere episode centers on the so-called Sunday Morning Slasher Carl Watts, a vicious murderer whose suspected 100-plus victims make him one of the most prolific serial killers in United States history. Future installments will focus on the likes of William Suff—a deranged killer who stalked sex workers in Riverside, California and claimed the lives of 13 women—and Daniel Conahan, who is believed to be behind the Hog Trail Murders the Fort Myers Eight killings in Florida.

The Bakersfield 3: A Tale of Murder and Motherhood, the new television event coming to Investigation Discovery tonight, is like three true-crime documentaries in one.

Kicking off on Sunday, May 11 at 8pm Eastern Time, the three-part doc takes a deep dive into the cases of three young people who went missing and were murdered in Bakersfield, California in spring 2018 over the course of just 34 days.

"A string of horrific crimes brings three moms together to find out what happened to their adult children – who all knew each other," reads the docuseries' official logline, per ID "The moms soon uncover disturbing truths about their kids and the town, ultimately testing their solid bonds of friendship."

Spotlighting the so-called "Bakersfield 3" mothers Cheryl Holsonbake, Jane Parrent and Diane Byrne—Byrne, who passed away last year after losing her battle with ovarian cancer, was reportedly the one who realized that the cases may be connected—the multipart doc follows the parents' heart-wrenching journeys to uncover the truth behind their children’s disappearances and how their maternal grief and determination united the three women forever.

All three hourlong installments will air this evening on ID, beginning with "One Mystery — or Three?" at 8pm ET and followed by "The Boogieman of Bakersfield" at 9pm and "Fight Like a Mother" at 10pm.

From theft to fraud to murder, the best true crime documentaries on Netflix are packed with stories and scandals that will send a chill down your spine — and the streamer's latest title is no exception. Premiering today, May 9, A Deadly American Marriage explores the shocking death of Jason Corbett from two sides: the perspective of self-defense as well as brutal murder.

Jason Corbett was a thirtysomething Irish widower and father of two, who found love again with Molly Martens, a 25-year-old Kentucky native who had come to Limerick, Ireland, to work as an au pair for Corbett's children. However, their picture-perfect life — which included a wedding and relocation to North Carolina — ended in a horrifying fashion when Jason was discovered beaten to death with a brick and a baseball bat at the family home in August 2015.

"A chilling 911 call. A gruesome scene. What is the real story behind Jason Corbett’s brutal death?" reads the official logline of the gripping new doc, per Netflix. "In this documentary, Jason’s wife and children reflect on the elusive truths behind their seemingly fairytale life."

Produced and directed by Jessica Burgess (Rich & Shameless, American Monster) and Jenny Popplewell (What Jennifer Did, American Murder: The Family Next Door), the 100-minute movie features exclusive interviews with Martens, as well as her father Thomas, Jason's kids, Jack and Sarah—who were only 10 and 8 years old, respectively, at the time of Jason’s death—and the victim's sister Tracey Corbett-Lynch and brother-in-law David, offering conflicting perspectives from those directly impacted by Jason's death.

Along with the family members, several investigators and prosecutors involved in the murder investigation appear in the doc, as well as Molly Martens' lawyers. And, as with any good Netflix crime title, things are not what they initially seem.

Netflix has added Angi: Fake Life, True Crime, a new documentary series about the murder of 35-year-old fashion designer Ana Paéz, who was found dead in an apartment in Barcelona on February 19, 2008.

The Spanish media dubbed it the "perfect crime", but Paéz’s killer was eventually identified as her friend Maria Ángeles Molina, AKA Angi.

Angi was sentenced to a total of 22 years in jail for the killing — 18 years for the murder, and four years for falsifying documents with a view to fraud.

The court said at the time that she was motivated by economic benefit, taking advantage of her friendship with Paéz to steal identity documents.

The businesswoman disguised herself, including using a wig, to take out loans and insurance policies in her friend's name worth over a million euros.

Murder plan

It was ruled in court that Angi had come up with a premeditated plan to murder Paéz. She invited Paéz to dinner at an apartment she'd rented under Paéz’s name.

The court said that "With the intent of forming an alibi", she drove to Zaragoza in a Porsche to collect her father’s ashes. She then returned to Barcelona to the flat where she drugged Paez with a "product the nature of which has not been identified".

She then murdered Paez in a way that was intended to throw the police off course by making it look like a sexual crime.

But the police searched her home, finding an unopened bottle of chloroform and an insurance policy in Paez’s name.

Further evidence was provided by her then-boyfriend, including Paez’s passport, which had been hidden behind the bathroom cistern.

Molina denied all charges but was found guilty.

'A real game of mirrors'

Director Carlos Agulló says: “The investigation surrounding Angi: Fake Life, True Crime has been laborious and also revealing. In addition to the proceedings, we have reviewed more than 2,000 pages of case files, crime reports, and family files.

"We have also conducted more than 60 conversations and interviews with retired police officers, private detectives and those close to both cases. We have faced a multifaceted investigation, as many as Angi's multiple identities. It has been a challenge, a real game of mirrors, and we hope that the viewer can experience the same challenge”.

Netflix says the two-part series also "sheds light on Angi's past, her marriage to Juan Antonio Álvarez Litben, and the businessman's death in 1996".

Not only is America’s Most Wanted back on TV now, with an all new season of the show having premiered on Fox on April 21, but starting April 28 viewers are going to get to watch a brand new series in the America’s Most Wanted franchise for a special three-week run — America’s Most Wanted: Missing Persons.

Again, this is a three-week special run for America’s Most Wanted: Missing Persons, so new episodes will also air on May 5 and May 12. Each episode will also be followed by a new episode of the flagship America’s Most Wanted series on Fox.

Additional deaths and a secret mistress further add to the web of lies that ensnare the tight-knit community.

Netflix has just added a true crime documentary that tells a story so outlandish it could be a plot from a Guy Ritchie movie, so it's appropriate he's the executive producer.

The Diamond Heist, which has dropped on Netflix globally, is a three-part documentary about the attempted theft of £350 million worth of diamonds including the famous Millennium Star, from London's Millennium Dome back in 2000.

The daring scheme was for a group of criminals to ram-raid what's now the 02 Arena in broad daylight. The audacious plan was to use a bulldozer to break in, steal the flawless Millennium Star and escape down the River Thames by speedboat. But there was one giant problem for the thieves — the police were watching their every move.

What makes this documentary especially exciting is that both the cops and the robbers are interviewed.

In the trailer, one of the robbers, Lee Wenham, talks about the only thing "exciting" about the Millennium Dome was the fact that it housed a massive diamond. "We had a team, the target was the Millennium Star, don't know anything about diamonds, but it was a bit of a p*ss take putting it where it was," he says.

The crooks realised that the diamond was vulnerable to being stolen. "These were first-class professional armed robbers," comments one of the cops.

Lee, who's now a landscape gardener, planned for it to be his last job. "We needed to figure out how we were going to get inside the vault, get the diamond and then get away. If we could pull it off, it was going to be the biggest heist of all time."

But, one of the cops says: "What they didn’t know was that we were following them. Whatever plan they had, the Flying Squad would be waiting for them."

The gang managed to smash the armoured glass housing the diamonds, including the Millennium Star, but unfortunately for them, the cops caught them red-handed and lengthy prison terms awaited.

Actress-model Yaya DaCosta—who Lifetime fans will recognize from her performance as music icon Whitney Houston in the network's 2015 biopic Whitney—leads the channel's latest “Ripped from the Headlines” movie, Not My Family: The Monique Smith Story, which premieres tonight, April 12, at 8pm Eastern Time.

Based on a shocking true story, Not My Family: The Monique Smith Story chronicles the horrific childhood of Baltimore woman Monique Smith (played by DaCosta)—who is forced to endure years of abuse at the hands of her own family—and what happens when Monique later discovers that the people she thought were her own kin actually aren't related to her at all.

That shocking event and the subsequent police investigation into the crime — which involved utilizing both the victim's tattoos and the help of social media to identify the body — serves as the subject of The Body in the Toolbox, the new true crime doc premiering on Investigation Discovery tonight.

The 60-minute crime special chronicles the extensive investigation that detectives set off on to uncover the circumstances surrounding what happened to the victim, who was eventually identified as Seth Colter Odom, a 24-year-old man who had resided in Poplarville, Mississippi. With law enforcement desperately navigating the challenging case, especially as Odom has not been reported missing prior to his grisly murder, The Body in the Toolbox is an engrossing watch for any true crime lover.

To tune into tonight's airing of the captivating crime thriller The Body in the Toolbox at 10pm Eastern Time (the crime doc will also repeat at 1am ET on the channel), you're going to need access to Investigation Discovery. The Lifetime network never fails to captivate with its acclaimed "Ripped from the Headlines" series and the channel's latest true crime title should be no exception: based on actual events, Fit for Murder is a chilling drama that follows two fitness celebrities whose lives take a very dark turn.

Premiering tonight, March 30 at 8pm Eastern Time on Lifetime, Fit for Murder centers on husband-and-wife fitness gurus Craig Titus and Kelly Ryan (played by Brock Yurich and Tory Trowbridge, respectively), bringing viewers into the glamorous world of competitive bodybuilding and fitness tournaments.

However, things become sinister for the professional athletes after they hire a young female assistant, Melissa James (Paris Smith), who tragically later turns up dead, seemingly due to a homicide. As police kick off an investigation into exactly what happened to Melissa, dark secrets about Craig and Kelly's relationship and ambitions are revealed, crumbling the carefully constructed public personas they've built for themselves.

Along with Brock Yurich (The Boxer and the Butterfly), Tory Trowbridge (Tiny Pretty Things) and Paris Smith (My Stepfather's Secret), the Fit for Murder cast includes Ragen LoCricchio as Megan, Nick Josten as Detective Wilson, Aaron Foster as Detective Mogg, Jasmeet Baduwalia Tony, Jodi Binstock as Maura, Devin Reeve as Jeremy, Steve Longley as Kip, Marquis Willis as Officer Willis and Myra Cheney as Officer Lee. Now that the final rose has been handed out on The Bachelor season 29, ABC is turning its attention from the spark of love to its darker side, as a new season of the true crime series Bad Romance premieres on ABC on Tuesday, March 25, at 10 pm ET/PT.

The second season of Bad Romance, a 20/20 limited series, will once again dive into surprising and disturbing romance stories and twisted obsessions that resulted in individuals losing their lives at the hands of those who promised to love them forever. ABC News Contributor and ESPN analyst Ryan Smith hosts the series, which this year will feature eight episodes focusing on a new story each week with interviews from those involved.

Viewers can watch Bad Romance on ABC if they have a traditional pay-TV provider, a TV antenna or a live TV streaming service with the network, i.e. Fubo, Hulu with Live TV and YouTube TV. If you miss it when it first airs on ABC or you don’t have any of those services, Bad Romance episodes will stream on-demand the next day on Hulu for all subscribers.

Bad Romance season 2 is starting its new batch of episodes with “No Tomorrow,” the story of Laura Grillo, a bride-to-be in Texas who was killed just days before her wedding. Police investigations into Laura’s death soon revealed that her murder may have been in the planning for months and features what ABC describes as “a twist no one saw coming.”

Among those set to be included in the “No Tomorrow” episode of Bad Romance are Grillo’s sister, Liz Frogge; Grillo’s best friend, Heather Nabor-Grace; Rowlett, Texas, police department detectives Jeff Freeman, Cruz Hernandez and Chris Sawyer; and Dallas County Assistant District Attorney Marissa Hatchet.

Bad Romance joins ABC’s Tuesday night lineup that includes crime dramas Will Trent season 3 and The Rookie season 7, making Tuesday night crime night on the network.

With eight episodes slated for Bad Romance season 2, expect the series to continue on ABC until May 13.

Paramount Plus has added true crime drama Happy Face, inspired by the podcast and book by the daughter of serial killer Keith Hunter Jesperson.

The eight-parter, added globally to the streaming service on Thursday, March 20, tells the chilling story of how the evil trucker (The Big Easy’s Dennis Quaid), who is currently serving life for a shocking 1990s murder spree, forced his way back into his daughter’s life decades after being exposed as the "Happy Face Killer". The nickname was given because he signed smiley faces on his many letters to police and media.

“I wasn't necessarily interested in playing a serial killer, but what drew me to it was what the show’s about — the relationship between Jesperson and his daughter,” says Dennis Quaid. “Melissa was a little girl back then, and he was a doting father at the same time that he was committing these murders. When he was caught, Melissa had to reconcile the fact that her father was a serial killer."

Melissa was just 15 when she found out her once-beloved father had murdered at least eight women over five years. Years later, we meet Melissa (Broadway star Annaleigh Ashford), who lives with her husband Ben (James Wolk). He also knows the truth, although her children are clueless about their family’s past.

When an imprisoned Jesperson tracks down his daughter to a TV talk show where she works, he calls charismatic host Dr. Greg (David Harewood), claiming he has a long-held secret to confess, and Melissa becomes determined to uncover if an innocent man will be put to death for a crime that her father committed.

The series follows Melissa's troubled quest to understand her dad's double life as she visits him in an Oregon jail with Dr. Greg's justice-seeking true-crime producer, Ivy (Tamera Tomakili), while flashbacks also reveal the intricate father-daughter relationship at the heart of the drama.

Talking to the LA Times, showrunner Jennifer Cacicio explained the appeal of making the series: "I first heard this story through Melissa's podcast, 'Happy Face.' I was writing on Your Honor [Netflix] at the time and listened to the first episode on my commute into work, then immediately called my agent and told her I needed the rights."

She added: "The idea of creating a serial-killer show told through the daughter’s POV was something I was so excited to do.”

Melissa Jesperson-Moore's book about her experience is called "Shattered Silence" and was originally published in 2009.

The first two episodes dropped on Thursday, March 20 on Paramount Plus, and then episodes will drop weekly until the finale airs on May 1. There's a free trial of Paramount Plus if you want to learn more about the platform first.

Netflix continues to expand its true crime library today, Friday, March 7, with the latest documentary, CHAOS: The Manson Murders, a deep-dive into one of the most infamous criminals in American history, Charles Manson.

The documentary joins the ranks of other Netflix true crime docs like American Murder: Gabby Petito, Into the Fire: The Lost Daughter, The Menendez Brothers and Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal, which all serve as thought-provoking viewing experiences.

CHAOS: The Manson Murders comes from Oscar-winning director Errol Morris (for The Fog of War) and is based on the book CHAOS: Charles Manson, the CIA, and the Secret History of the Sixties by Tom O’Neill with Dan Piepenbring. Netflix site Tudum describes the movie by stating:

“The film looks at the covert motives that may have led to the notorious murders. Morris, known for his investigative prowess and compelling storytelling, brings a fresh perspective to this chilling chapter of American history with gripping interviews, shocking archival visuals — and the music of Charles Manson himself."

Now if you’re not familiar with the folklore of Charles Manson, allow us to give you a brief rundown of his crimes as detailed by CNN. In the spring of 1967, he was released from prison and decided to move to San Francisco, where he managed to attract a group of followers. Eventually, these followers even followed him to Spahn Ranch, near Chatsworth, Calif.

In July 1969, Manson follower Bobby Beausoleil killed a music teacher named Gary Hinman at the behest of Manson. Hinman was someone Manson previously knew and who introduced him to Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys.

In August of the same year, under the direction of Manson, some of his followers (Susan Atkins, Tex Watson and Patricia Krenwinkel) murdered five people at the home of movie director Roman Polanski, including his wife, actress Sharon Tate, and Folgers Coffee heiress Abigail Folger. The following night, Manson went with Watson, Atkins, Krenwinkel, Linda Kasabian, Leslie Van Houten and Steve “Clem” Grogan in search of more victims, who wind up being Leno and Rosemary LaBianca.

Fast forward to December, and Manson, Watson, Atkins, Krenwinkel and Kasabian are indicted for the murders at Polanski’s home, and Van Houten is indicted for the LaBianca murders. While Kasabian is ultimately given immunity in exchange for her testimony, by 1971, the others are sentenced to death. But given the death penalty was abolished in the state of California in 1972, their sentences were commuted to life terms in prison. Beausoleil by the way was convicted for the murder of Hinman, and sentenced to life in prison as well.

Since the story of Manson and his followers came to light in their trials, there has been much discussion about how Manson was able to sway people to such a felonious lifestyle. This conversation will seemingly continue in the brand-new documentary, along with untangling some conspiracy theories surrounding the notorious crimes.

CHAOS: The Manson Murders is now streaming on Netflix.

Powerhouse streamer Netflix adds another true crime documentary to its library with the latest project, American Murder: Gabby Petito. Over the years, Netflix's true crime docs have proven to be both eye-opening and nuanced, while also becoming major topics of conversation on social media. Documentaries like FYRE: The Greatest Party That Never Happened, Tiger King, Into the Fire: The Lost Daughter, The Menendez Brothers and Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal have all shed light on some truly outlandish crimes in American culture for subscribers.

As it pertains to American Murder: Gabby Petito, the docuseries takes a deep dive into the murder of Gabby Petito. CBS News states that in July 2021, Petito and her boyfriend Brian Laundrie left New York to head on a cross-country road trip for four months, planning to document their experience on social media.

On August 12, someone called 9-1-1 claiming to see a confrontation between Laundrie and Petito. The Moab, Utah Police responded and noted in their report that Laundrie “hit Petito,” but no arrests were made. By August 25, Gabby made her last official post to Instagram, and in the following days, Petito’s mom received a few “odd” texts from her daughter that seemed “out of character.”

By September 1, Laundrie arrived back home in North Port, Fla., without his live-in girlfriend Petito, and by September 13, Laundrie was “missing” along with Petito. On September 15, Laundrie was named by North Port Police as a person of interest in Petito’s disappearance.

Jumping to September 21, remains found in Wyoming were identified as Petito and an arrest warrant for Laundrie was issued two days later. In October, Brian’s remains were also found in a Florida reserve, and it was later announced he died from a self-inflicted wound. The FBI reported locating a notebook belonging to Laundrie and in it, they stated he accepted responsibility for Petito’s death.

With all that being said, as the story of Petito and Laundrie unfolded in real time, the American public was captivated by every twist and turn, wanting to get to the truth. Now those who’ve held an interest in what happened can get a more in-depth look at the case with American Murder: Gabby Petito. Here’s a brief synopsis of the series:

“In August 2021, 22-year-old Gabby Petito was killed by her fiance, Brian Laundrie, while the young couple was on a four-month road trip across the United States documenting their ‘van life’ journey on social media. Two months later, Laundrie was found to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and his parents were suspected of helping to cover up the murder. While taking viewers on a journey through Gabby and Brian’s final days together, the series will unveil the tragic reality behind their Insta-perfect life and reveal painful moments where their story might have taken a different turn.”

Brian Laundrie’s parents were not accused of any crime. However, they were accused in a civil case of failing to disclose that their son admitted to killing Gabby. Gabby’s parents sued them for emotional distress, but the two sides reached a deal and the details of the deal have been kept confidential.

American Murder: Gabby Petito is now streaming globally exclusively on Netflix. So if you don't already have a Netflix subscription, you'll need to choose from one of the service's available tiers to watch.

Many TV shows are made based on popular podcasts, and Scamanda is one of those; it comes out on Thursday, January 30.

Scamanda is about a woman called Amanda Riley, who began to chronicle her experiences with cancer online while supported by her church community.

However people began to realize that there was more to Riley's story than she was letting on, and eventually a private investigator began to set about exposing an alleged scam that the woman was weaving.

Can you watch Scamanda in the UK or Australia

At the time of writing, no release date for Scamanda in the UK or Australia has been announced, but we'll let you know when that changes.

Based on precedent, the series could come to Disney Plus. The streamer often releases ABC or Hulu original series under its Star banner internationally, and so it might be the same this time around.

There's no indication if that's the case though, or when that could happen. We could get more news when the show wraps up in the US, so on Friday, February 14, but we'll have to see.

In Scamanda, a new true crime docuseries from ABC News, viewers are going to get an even deeper dive into the story of Amanda Riley. Many may already know about Riley, as Scamanda is based on a podcast of the same name, which captured audiences with her rollercoaster story revolving around Riley revealing that she had Stage 3 blood cancer, only for the diagnoses to come into question.

Before watching Scamanda on Thursday, January 30 at 9 pm ET/PT, when the show premieres on ABC, here’s what you need to know about the true story, the podcast that inspired and what more we may still learn from this new docuseries.

What is the true story behind Scamanda?

In 2012, Riley was a young mother and wife in San Jose, Calif., when she said she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. She began documenting her journey on her blog, Lymphoma Can Suck It, with pictures and detailed insight into her “condition.” Riley solicited donations and received six figures from hundreds of people, including her church community, for her “treatments.”

Then, someone sent an anonymous tip to Nancy Moscatiello, an investigative producer. Moscatiello spent five years looking into Riley and her “illness,” and after about five years of keeping up the façade, Riley was found to have made the cancer up. The money had really been going to pay for her living expenses.

In July 2020, Riley was charged by criminal complaint. According to the US Attorney's Office, Northern District of California, Riley falsified medical records and forged physicians’ letters and medical certifications. The devout Christian even shaved her head to make it look like she was going through chemotherapy. To make matters worse, she gave false testimony in legal proceedings and attacked whoever said she was faking her sickness (she even sued one of them).

Riley was ultimately convicted of defrauding an identified 349 donors. She was ordered to serve five years in a Texas prison and pay back $105,513 in restitution.

What is the Scamanda podcast?

The Lionsgate podcast Scamanda was released in 2023 and became the No. 1 Top New Show and No. 1 Most Shared Show, as well as the No. 4 Most Followed Show of the year on Apple Podcasts. Hosted by Charlie Webster, the true crime podcast detailed the whole story in eight episodes, along with multiple bonus episodes.

How is the Scamanda docuseries different?

If you’ve already listened to the podcast, why watch the show? The Scamanda docuseries features new and exclusive interviews, including with Amanda’s former friends, an IRS investigator who covered the case and a neuropsychologist who dives into the mind of a scammer. There will also be communications between Riley and Webster, materials Moscatiello collected during her investigation, archival assets and more. There’s bound to be plenty of new information you haven’t read or listened to yet.

Scamanda questions we still have

Riley’s story has many parts that have extended over many years, so it’s natural not every little piece of the puzzle has been thoroughly talked about on the podcast. That’s why we’re hoping these questions get answered in the Scamanda docuseries.

How was Riley able to get away with it for so long?

Yes, we know what she said and who she fooled, but how did she manage to be so convincing and get away with it for so many years? Five years is a long time, and Riley had a whole village around her. Was it a matter of people around her not wanting to question someone who they believed had cancer?

Was Riley officially diagnosed with any mental illnesses?

Prosecutors said Riley could have Munchausen syndrome (now called factitious disorder imposed on self [FDIS]), which is a factitious disorder where someone falsifies symptoms of an illness that they don’t have. But was this ever confirmed? Was Riley suffering from this mental disorder or another one at all?

You may remember another famous Munchausen case that involved Gypsy Rose Blanchard, whose mother, Clauddine "Dee Dee" Blanchard, had Munchausen syndrome by proxy (now called factitious disorder imposed on another [FDIA]). The difference there is that a person puts those falsified symptoms onto another person. Most often, it’s a mother making up fake illnesses for her child.

We hope to get answers to these questions and more in Scamanda. Watch the docuseries on ABC starting January 30, with episodes becoming available to stream on-demand the next day on Hulu.

In the mid-1990s, a California woman named Laura Cowan was already having a rough time: her husband was in prison, and she was struggling to make ends meet with her three young children. Things, however, got exponentially worse when, following her husband's arrest, she sought shelter and support from an acquaintance who ended up taking Cowan and her children captive in his nailed-shut garage, sans heat, water, a bathroom or adequate food.

It sounds like the premise of a page-turning thriller, but it actually is a true crime story that's been turned into a Lifetime Original Movie. Premiering tonight, January 18 at 8pm Eastern Time, Girl in the Garage: The Laura Cowan Story is the latest title under the network's "Ripped from the Headlines" film umbrella. Paige Hurd stars as Laura, leading a cast that includes Stephen Bishop, Brad James, Shanica Knowles, Tracey Rooney, Sanaa Sade Salaam, Jackson Little, Jazzanae Sherman and Diego J. Torres. Manu Boyer is in the director's seat, with a screenplay written by scribe Avery O. Williams.

"When a family friend offers to move her and her children into his home temporarily, Laura lets out a sigh of relief, believing this is an act of kindness that will give her time to get back on her feet. Overnight, this blessing turns into a nightmare when Laura and her children realize they’ve been abducted," reads the movie's official synopsis. "Held captive in a cold and dark garage, Laura is repeatedly sexually assaulted by her abductor and her and her children are beaten and abused for years. One day, Laura manages to sneak a note to the outside world and authorities are able to rescue her and her family. Much to Laura’s surprise, her note not only lead the police to her and her family, but two other women and their children being held captive in the same house."

"If you want to lose somebody, come to the Bayou," teases the trailer for Cold Case Files: Murder In the Bayou, the new true crime documentary series premiering tonight, December 27, on A&E. Narrated by Emmy-winning actor Keith David (Mufasa: The Lion King, American Fiction), the six-episode series "features stories that the swamp threatened to swallow forever, but detectives managed to drag out into the light," reads the official show description. "These investigators, family, and friends know that no matter how deep in the muck it’s buried, no sin stays secret forever."

Stretching across the swamplands of the American South, from Louisiana to Alabama to Florida’s Panhandle, the Cold Case Files spin-off kicks off with its premiere episode, entitled "Trinity River Murder," tonight at 10pm Eastern Time on A&E. The gripping first ep centers on 13-year-old Krystal Jean Baker — the supposed great-niece of screen icon Marilyn Monroe — who is found dead beneath a bridge in Texas’ Bayou Country. With investigators stumped, the quest to track down Baker's killer ends up taking 14 years and leads to a new law.

Future episodes, which air weekly on Friday evenings through the end of January, delve into such shocking cases as the brutal murder of young mother Selonia Reed in the small town of Hammond, Louisiana; the mysterious disappearance of a Lafayette woman named Bonnie Ruphard, which put a sprawling Bayou family under the microscope for her death; and the resurfacing of Curtis "Cochise" Smith's body twenty-five years after he vanished in Plaquemine, LA.

To tune into tonight's premiere of Cold Case Files: Murder in the Bayou, as well as subsequent episodes of the true crime series, you're going to need access to A&E. Netflix has added Luke Evans' moving real-life true crime The Pembrokeshire Murders, which originally aired on ITV.

The three-part story, now on Netflix in the UK, sees Evans star as real-life detective DCS Steve Wilkins of the Dyfed-Powys Police force, who risked his reputation by reopening two unsolved double murder cases. Bizarrely, the killer's downfall was partly due to his appearance on the classic ITV game show Bullseye.

In 2006 Steve reopened two unsolved double murders. One was the killings of Peter and Gwenda Dixon as they walked on a Pembrokeshire coastal path in June 1989. That case bore similarities to a crime committed nearby four years earlier at Scoveston Manor. Steve thought that convicted burglar John Cooper (played by Keith Allen) was responsible for both crimes. However, Steve didn't have enough evidence and knew it was a race against time to gather it as Cooper was about to be released after serving time for a series of robberies.

Strangely, part of the evidence used to eventually convict Cooper of the killings was his appearance on Bullseye. A clip of Cooper appearing on Bullseye only a month before the Dixons were killed was shown to the jury, with the prosecution saying his appearance matched an artist's impression of a man seen withdrawing money using a bank card that belonged to the Dixons. Talking about working alongside Keith Allen, Luke said: "Keith is an incredible actor and there’s a manipulation and a dark sensibility to his performance that sends shivers up your spine. Oh my God, it's extraordinary."

The drama was critically acclaimed when it was screened on ITV in 2021 with a critic score of 82% on Rotten Tomatoes. Netflix can be a great way of discovering dramas you may have missed when they aired on television.

In October Netflix UK added A Confession, a true crime drama starring Martin Freeman. More recently Netflix UK added Temple, Mark Strong's thriller which saw him star as a doctor who operates an illegal surgery under a Tube station.

The Pembrokeshire Murders is available on Netflix and ITVX in the UK. ITVX additionally has a documentary about the case, The Pembrokeshire Murders: Catching the Gameshow Killer, which tells the real-life story. US viewers can watch The Pembrokeshire Murders via BritBox.

Netflix has added true crime drama Bank Under Siege, which tells the story of a huge heist in Spain that "shook a nation" by threatening to kill off the country's new democracy.

Set in Barcelona in May 1981, three months after an attempted coup d’état at the Congress of Deputies, the lower house of the Spanish Parliament, the series opens with eleven hooded men bursting into the city's Central Bank on a Saturday morning.

But this was no ordinary robbery. Netflix teases: "What starts as a spectacular robbery soon becomes a real challenge to Spain's recent democracy. The robbers hold more than 200 hostages and threaten to kill them if the government does not agree to free Colonel Tejero and three others in charge of the 23F."

Colonel Tejero was the leading figure in the attempted coup which had taken place on February 23, 1981. The coup saw Colonel Tejero and his supporters hold the congress members hostage but it failed to win wider army support. King Juan Carlos I denounced the plot on television and they were arrested.

But, as Bank Under Siege, dramatically shows that was far from the end of the story as masked men threatened Spanish democracy, which had only taken place in the country following the death of dictator Franco in 1975.

The bank robbers demanded planes so they and the men jailed could escape safely, threatening that if their demands were not met they would start killing their hostages.

There has been some debate over the true motives of the robbers, explored in the TV series.

The trailer shows the robbers bursting into the bank, firing shots into the air. An official is seen saying: "This could be another February 23." We also see journalists who are trying to get to the truth of the robbery and discover who is ultimately behind the events.

Police snipers lined up trying to take out the robbers if necessary, while the crooks attempted to confuse the police by switching clothes with some of the hostages. While the story is known in Spain, Netflix will no doubt be hoping that a new global audience will be enthralled by the dramatic true story. Viewers might also enjoy the 1980s setting.

"Sweeney is arrested but, due to a catastrophic failure by the court to realise how dangerous he is, granted bail. He immediately pursues Delia and subjects her to a horrific, near-fatal attack. She survives, but Sweeney evades capture and disappears…"

When it comes to digging into some of the most harrowing murders that have taken place in one of America's most historic regions, who better to recount those true-crime tales than the Philadelphia homicide detectives who worked on those very cases? Premiering tonight, the new Oxygen series Philly Homicide is a 10-episode docuseries that delves into the twists and turns of the most brutal crimes in the City of Brotherly Love through the eyes of former and current Philly-area law enforcement.

Hosted by Chris McMullin, a lieutenant with the Bucks County Sheriff’s Office in Pennsylvania, Philly Homicide will highlight a different murder case each week. "In each hourlong episode of Philly Homicide, McMullin gives unique insights on crimes that took place in a region steeped in rich history, vibrant culture, and known for tenacity and grit," reads an official description of the docuseries. "Archival footage, exclusive first-person interviews with former and current Philly area detectives, and cinematic recreations provide an insider’s view into the heartrending cases Philly’s finest diligently worked to solve in the city known as America’s birthplace."

Lt. McMullin told Oxygen that he signed on to host the true-crime program to pay tribute to the victims featured on the series, as well as their families. “I just wanted to show how hard law enforcement works to solve these cases and get justice,” the detective said. think that’ll be very, very clear when somebody watches the episodes and sees the dedication and listens to these detectives talk—how personal it does become for them at times and how hard they dig in to try and find the truth.”

Anna Kendrick has shown time and time again as a star on the screen, with numerous hit roles in projects like Pitcher Perfect, A Simple Favor or her Oscar-nominated turn in Up in the Air. But Kendrick may have just as much talent behind the camera as she does in front of it, as evidenced by her new Netflix movie Woman of the Hour, which served as her feature directorial debut.

Now streaming on Netflix, Woman of the Hour has quickly taken over the most-watched movie spot in the US and UK since its release worldwide on October 18. In addition to the recognition for Kendrick, the movie’s true crime story about a woman who encounters a serial killer when she appears on a hit 1970s TV dating game show certainly appeals to Netflix subscribers’ penchant for the true crime genre. Strong word of mouth doesn’t hurt either, as the movie is “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes with a 91%.

I, clearly like many others, watched it over the weekend and my biggest takeaway was the skill that Kendrick showed with her first-ever directing gig. In fact, thinking about it some more I can’t help but make connections to Kendrick’s movie and another true crime classic: David Fincher’s Zodiac.

That may be some rarefied air to many. Not only does Fincher have a devoted fanbase for just about all of his work, but Zodiac in particular holds a special place in people’s view of the director's work as one of his best movies. While I feel Zodiac is probably the stronger of the two, Kendrick’s direction gave me similar feelings I had when watching Fincher’s movie.

Specifically, Woman of the Hour does a phenomenal job of capitalizing on a character’s dread and ramping up the tension in scenes. Throughout the movie, we see a number of Rodney Alcala’s (Daniel Zovatto) murders over the course of a decade. Each time there is just the smallest moment that takes a seemingly innocuous meeting between Rodney and these different women to one of imminent danger.

Since it was already featured in the teaser trailer for the movie, I want to focus on when Sheryl Bradshaw (Kendrick) and Rodney have their first date after being paired together on the game show. The conversation is seemingly going fine as Sheryl and Rodney talk about playwrights Sam Shepard and Edward Albee, but a small awkward moment changes the dynamic and Rodney’s demeanor. He is not necessarily saying anything that would signal to Sheryl he is a dangerous killer, but the quiet that settles between every exchange builds the tension up, and every word thereafter raises both Sheryl and the viewer’s alarm.

The scene it reminded me of from Zodiac was when Jake Gyllenhaal’s Robert Graysmith goes alone to the man’s house to follow a lead on a potential Zodiac suspect based on a handwriting sample. When Robert finds out that the man he is talking to is the one whose handwriting he suspects, the entire atmosphere of the scene changes from hope of finding a lead to dread of possibly being in the room with a killer.

That was what came to mind when I watched Woman of the Hour. Kendrick, however, shared many of her own influences in the movie in a video interview with Letterboxd. She references the Coen Brothers’ No Country for Old Men (which also is an incredible builder of tension that I can definitely see upon listening to her talk about it), Agnes Varda’s Le Bonheur, Alan J. Pakula’s Kulte and Jean-Pierre Melville’s Army of Shadows.

With all those influences, Kendrick made a very strong directorial debut with Woman of the Hour that has me intrigued to see what she may tackle next.

The City of Angels has a hellish side, as proven by Oxygen's new true-crime documentary special Serial Killer Capital: Los Angeles. Premiering tonight, October 20 at 7pm Eastern Time, the two-hour special examines a series of brutal murders that wreaked havoc in South Los Angeles beginning in the 1980s and continuing through the early 2000s.

"The City of Angels became a city of horrors as a serial killer, whom authorities began referring to as the Southside Slayer, devastated the community.  The bodies of women were discovered one after another—in alleys, on playgrounds, and even on the steps of an elementary school," reads the special's synopsis from Oxygen. "The investigators' worst fears were confirmed when they determined after years of working on the cases that there wasn't just one Southside Slayer, but four separate serial killers operating at the same time in the same place," a realization that set off a wave of panic and confusion within the city and police force. 

However, law enforcement continued to work for decades to bring the killers to justice. "After the infamous OJ Simpson case in the 1990s, the Los Angeles Police Department invested millions of dollars into a new crime lab including DNA forensics," per Oxygen. "These new advancements drove the unending hunt for the killers, who police believe were responsible for over 100 murders."

The program will see families of the victims speak publicly about the crimes for the first time, along with first-hand survivor accounts and interviews with law enforcement who eventually found justice for many of the murdered women.  

Serial Killer Capital: Los Angeles is the follow-up to Oxygen's 2022 special Serial Killer Capital: Baton Rouge, which was the most-watched new program of that year and detailed the horrific crimes committed by serial killers Sean Vincent Gillis, Derrick Todd Lee and Jeffrey Lee Guillory.

Lifetime's latest thriller is a doozy, even by the network's scandalous standards: part of the channel's "Ripped from the Headlines" movie slate, Husband, Father, Killer: The Alyssa Pladl Story is based on a disturbing true story of a man who impregnated his biological daughter after reconnecting with her as an adult years after her adoption, an encounter that will have lasting and, horrifyingly, fatal consequences for the Pladl family.

The official film synopsis reads: "Alyssa (Jackie Cruz) and Steven (Matthew MacCaull) have an intense relationship from the start and move in together when Alyssa is an impressionable teen. After they have a daughter of their own, their path takes a dark turn when Steven becomes physically abusive toward the infant. Alyssa senses the situation is dire and puts the child up for adoption…little does she know, 18 years later their daughter, now named Katie (Matreya Scarrwener), would seek them out."

"After an instant connection when they reunite, Steven convinces Katie to move in with him, Alyssa and their two young daughters, promising her opportunities to pursue her passions. Steven starts neglecting the rest of the family and Alyssa finally has enough and moves out. When Alyssa discovers that Katie and Steven are having an affair and expecting, she confronts them and tries to convince Katie of Steven’s abusive past. Katie refuses to listen until it’s too late."

Using home video footage and reexamining their childhood, the special "will detail Alissa Turney's sister Sarah Turney's exhaustive search for answers, a journey that has prompted the young woman to become a podcaster and advocate for not just missing persons, but anyone impacted by violence and wrongdoing," per Oxygen.

The official synopsis for the documentary special reads: "The Voices for Justice Media founder Sarah Turney became a viral sensation when she posted suspicions on social media that her dad killed her sister, Alissa. Now Sarah gives unprecedented access to the continuation of her story, including a recently unearthed trove of home videos, as she re-examines her and Alissa’s childhood. Sarah makes chilling discoveries, breaking through years of manipulation to reconstruct the truth of the past and be free of her father’s influence. Sarah’s final conversation with her father is haunting and a testament to her tenacity and unending search for Alissa."

"It's really a story about how victims can find a new way to take control of the narrative, to be active in the investigation, not be passive," said Jesse Sweet, who co-directed the documentary with Ricki Stern. Stern told Oxygen.com: "Part of the way we wanted to tell a story was through Sarah's eyes, to really understand how you can go over a decade believing that your father had nothing to do with the disappearance of your sister, and then, it wasn't until her late 20s, where she started to become suspicious. How did that happen?"

"Erica wasn’t abducted, but had run away and chosen to live in seclusion with her 21-year-old boyfriend, Andrew (Kyle Clark), less than a mile from her mother’s house. Banned from seeing her older boyfriend, Erica chose to spend her teenage years hiding from visitors and concealed behind drawn curtains."

Upcoming releases hitting the network later this month include Nobody Dumps My Daughter, starring Ana Ortiz, Jasmine Vega and Sheila E. on October 12; Husband, Father, Killer: The Alyssa Pladl Story, with actors Jackie Cruz, Matreya Scarrwener and Matthew MacCaull, premiering October 19; and Mormon Mom Gone Wrong: The Ruby Franke Story on October 26, headlined by Heather Locklear and Emilie Ullerup. 

Following the success of Ryan Murphy's Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, the real-life Menendez brothers are getting a chance to tell their story in their own words in the new Netflix documentary The Menendez Brothers. 

In addition to prison phone calls with Erik and Lyle Menendez, director Alejandro Hartmann presents decades of interviews and recently revealed evidence that shines new light on the case. 

Erik and Lyle gained global attention after being arrested for the murders of their parents, Jose and Mary Louise "Kitty" Menendez, in 1989. The brothers claimed that they'd been sexually abused by their father for years, leading them to commit the murders, but police believed they killed their parents for money.

Their trial was televised on Court TV, which turned them into celebrities. The first trial ended up with a deadlocked jury; the second trial was overshadowed by the 1994 Northridge earthquake, escalating tensions after the Rodney King Verdict and the OJ Simpson trial. The brothers were sentenced to consecutive life sentences, narrowly avoiding the death penalty.

The Menendez Brothers premise

Here's the official synopsis of The Menendez Brothers from Netflix: 

"In 1996, Lyle and Erik Menendez were convicted of the murders of their parents in what became one of the most famous criminal cases of the late 20th century. For the first time in almost 30 years, and in their own words, both brothers revisit the trial that shocked the nation."

Who appears in The Menendez Brothers

Both Erik and Lyle Menendez were interviewed for the documentary. As they are still incarcerated at Donovan State Prison in southern California, they were not able to do on camera interviews but they were able to record phone interviews with the documentary crew. 

Diane Vander Molen, Erik and Lyle's cousin, will appear in the documentary. When they were kids, Lyle told her that his father was sexually abusing him. She went to Kitty, who denied the story and dismissed what Lyle said as lies. Her testimony was considered key to the brothers' defense, but it wasn't allowed in the second trial that ultimately led to their convictions and sentences of consecutive life sentences. 

Prosecutor Pamela Bozanich will also appear in the documentary.

Netflix has added the harrowing Martin Freeman true crime drama A Confession, arguably the Sherlock star's toughest role yet.

The Responder actor plays real-life Detective Superintendent Steve Fulcher, who headed the investigation into the disappearance of 22-year-old Sian O'Callaghan from Swindon in 2011. 

Originally shown on ITV in 2019, Netflix UK viewers now have the chance to watch the six-part drama which explores how the police investigation led to cabbie Christopher Halliwell (played by former EastEnders actor Joe Absolom), being arrested over Sian's suspected abduction.

Steve interviewed Halliwell, but without cautioning him first, in the hope that Sian was alive and that he'd reveal her whereabouts. However, Halliwell confessed to killing Sian and another young woman, later revealed to be Becky Godden-Edwards, who had been missing since 2003. The drama shows how Steve's breach of regulation threatened the case and cost him his career.

Talking about the drama at the time, Martin said: "I wasn't familiar with the story but I watched interviews with Steve Fulcher and it was fascinating, and what happened to him seemed unjust. Primarily, it's a story of two girls who have been murdered and their families, and then it broadens out to being a story of this detective who tries his best for them. We see how his life unravels. He was a good copper and his work was a massive part of his identity. One day changed that…"

The series also featured The Crown's Imelda Staunton as Becky's mother Karen and Downton Abbey's Siobhan Finneran as Sian's mother Elaine.

During his research on the role, Martin met Steve. "It was really useful and the first time I've had that opportunity when playing a living person. You feel a sense of responsibility. I met Steve before shooting and he and his family came on set, I texted him when particular scenes came up. It was nice to be able to ask, 'What were you feeling there?'".

As to whether it made him consider if Steve's actions were justified, he went on: "It did. As far as Steve is concerned, every decision was justifiable. If Halliwell had been brought back to the police station, his brief would have told him to say, 'No comment'. But Steve was trying to find Sian alive."

Christopher Halliwell pleaded guilty to Sian O'Callaghan's murder in October 2012 and was given a life sentence. In September 2016, Halliwell was found guilty of Becky's murder and sentenced to a whole life order, meaning he will spend the rest of his life in prison. Steve Fulcher later resigned from the police.

Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story ends with episode 9, "Hang Men." The second trial, hot on the heels of the OJ Simpson verdict, falls apart spectacularly and leads to a very different verdict for them. 

The episode begins with the reading of the verdict in the OJ Simpson case, with Dominick Dunne (Nathan Lane) sitting front and center in the audience. He is stunned at the result. 

In 1995, Lyle (Nicholas Chavez) points out to Leslie (Ari Graynor) that OJ got off and he never even took the witness stand. She says the mayor needs a win, so they're looking to convict Lyle and Erik (Cooper Koch) no matter what. She tried to get him a new attorney but he didn't like him (he wants her to "call Cochran"); Leslie reminds Lyle he's out of money and she's working for free. Oh, and his big scheme to have people pledge money for his legal defense each month is only going to backfire because it's a bad look and he needs to stop writing letters because it can all be used against him. Lyle says OJ had it figured out, and he had a catch phrase. They need a catch phrase, like "if you've been abused, you cannot be accused."

Erik, who has been silent until now, starts laughing. Lyle reminds him they're there because of him opening his mouth. Erik grabs a copy of the book Norma wrote using Lyle's recordings, telling his brother that he sounds unhinged. He's terrified because everyone has turned against them and wants them dead, so Erik is trying to find a way to save them. Lyle says he's not dying in prison.

In court, the prosecutor addresses the jury. Leslie tries to object but the judge doesn't stop him from speaking. The prosecutor points out the brothers won't be testifying, but they don't need it because Lyle has a book that outlines everything. The prosecutor calls upon a car salesman to talk about the time Jose (Javier Bardem) bought Lyle an Alfa Romeo for graduation, which Lyle called a clown car despite the hefty price tag. Again, Leslie tries to object to the testimony but gets overruled. As the testimony continues, Leslie tries to object but the judge says she can't object to everything.

Persecution

Notably, Craig (Charlie Hall) testifies about the script he wrote with Erik and how Erik confessed to him about the crime. However, the details don't match up; Erik snuck in through another room to find Kitty (Chloë Sevigny) and Jose sleeping on the couch and that's when the brothers killed them. Leslie gets frustrated when the prosecutor asks Craig whether he was familiar with The Billionaire Boys Club? Craig responds it's essentially the same story as Erik and Lyle and that they were aware of the movie because their friend wrote it. When their friend takes the stand, he's asked whether Lyle wrote him a letter asking him to say certain things in his testimony. 

Erik takes the stand and is asked whether they considered using a crossbow. He's caught off guard and admits it would have been easier to get a crossbow given all the challenges to getting a gun. Leslie objects and the prosecutor says this establishes motive; he knows she's upset because premeditation sets the brothers up for the death penalty. When she snaps and says there's "no love" in the courtroom, he holds up pictures of Kitty and Jose and says there's no love when you kill your parents. He presses on about the bullets used and how they said the mafia did it, and ultimately how they shot their mother up so much her skeleton was destroyed. He calls it "lying in wait." And despite Erik's claims that he was abused and afraid of his father, it still constitutes premeditation. The pool guy is called upon to testify that he overheard the brothers yelling at their parents the day before the murder and that there was no sign that they were afraid of them. The parents, he said, were afraid of their sons. 

It doesn't help when the prosecutor calls upon the boat captain, the Menendez maid and Jose's assistant, all of whom state that Kitty and Jose were loving parents. The only medical evidence of abuse came from a doctor who said Erik's throat was bruised after an accident with a popsicle. The prosecutor cites the book When A Child Kills as the playbook for their plan to kill their parents. Leslie demands a mistrial but she's overruled. 

The prosecutor closes by saying Leslie is weaving a story together because it worked for her previous case and the only people who can corroborate the story are dead. He adds, shockingly, that lots of people are abused by people they know, even among the jury, but it's not common to murder the people who commit the abuse. Leslie at this point gets in trouble for playing hangman with Erik. The prosecutor ends by talking about the brothers' love for money and how they were willing to kill for it. He accuses the brothers and the legal team of using abuse as their defense. 

Verdict

At a dinner party, Dunne is asked whether he keeps in touch with the Goldman family? He says the family is "devastated" that OJ is a free man. He claims a legal team knows how to game the system using race or abuse to get away with anything. He says he's "over" the Menendez brothers but he reveals Lyle is in a serious, committed relationship. As for Erik, Dunne says he's been going through a rough time and has been held in solitary confinement. He's still in a loving relationship, too. Dunne predicts LA won't be able to handle another wayward verdict like Rodney King and OJ. 

The verdict is read. Both brothers are found guilty of first degree murder, with Erik being found guilty of the special condition of lying in wait. Sentencing for first degree murder can only be life in prison or the death penalty. 

In the jury room, the jurors face off about whether the brothers were abused or not. One woman in particular takes control of the room and won't let anyone challenge her very strong opinions, demanding the brothers are sentenced to death. She has a heart attack on the spot. When the alternate juror comes in, he's nervous but he points out there were never witnesses who said they were violent and their relatives all love them. He doesn't know what to believe but if they went through what they claim, he's not going to put them to death. He hopes everyone thinks about it because they will ultimately have to live with their decisions, too. 

Before the verdict is read, Erik fixes Lyle's tie and Lyle gives his brother a quick kiss on the forehead. We jump to the prison dining hall, where the room full of Black prisoners groan when the life sentence is handed down. The prosecutor is disappointed while Leslie is happy they are still alive. Outside the courtroom, Leslie catches a detective and tells him not to separate them. 

Erik tells the prison chaplain he's hoping people will change their minds in a few years and see they never should have been convicted. The chaplain points out that it's good he's going through the appeal but his life, for now, is in prison and he needs to find a meaningful life there. 

Lyle is awakened in the middle of the night. They're being transferred. Erik is brought out and finds out he's going to Folsom Prison. Lyle is led to another car but they go in different directions. They're not moving on together. 

We see Jose and Kitty on a boat. She's shocked to learn that they're shark fishing. Jose lied about shark fishing while trying to close a deal, so now he needs to learn about it. She's glad he didn't leave her at home with the boys the way he did when he was with his mistress. Jose feels terrible for everything he did and he says he has everything he needs with her. When it's time to throw chum into the water, they call for the boys but they are on the bow discussing their plans. Erik asks Lyle if he's still on board. They agree to "do it."

The ground isn't the only thing shaking in Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story episode 8, as the Menendez brothers discover their wave of popularity might be over.

"Seismic Shifts" begins with Judalon (Leslie Grossman) stating her name for the record as she walks into the courthouse. She explains she specializes in crystals and stones, and publishes a newsletter for doll collectors. She describes how she met Dr. Jerome Oziel (Dallas Roberts). Leslie (Ari Graynor) smiles as Judalon enters the courtroom. 

When Leslie asks about what her relationship with Oziel was, she outlines how abusive he was and how his license was revoked. She calls herself a sex servant to him because he put her on xanax and took advantage of her. A contract of the 500 sex acts she'd perform for him is on the record, with her two cats listed as witnesses. All of their conversations are recorded because Judalon's business involves transcription, so several conversations are played for the jury. Lyle (Nicholas Chavez) and Erik (Cooper Koch) are trying not to smile but they know her testimony is working in their favor.

Judalon explains how Oziel begged her for help with the Menendez brothers' sessions. She insists Oziel was not scared when the brothers left his office and all he cared about was their money. He plied her with pills and had her admitted to the hospital; once she woke up he said if she ever tried to leave him then he'd have her committed. Judalon says Oziel raped her twice. Leslie asks if Judalon went to the police for safety, then if Judalon was in love with Oziel and wanted to have kids with him? Judalon said never want kids who look like him. 

Northridge

On the bus back to prison, Lyle tells his brother they've got this trial in the bag and he's going to have $14 million after this. Erik doesn't seem convinced but Lyle is going on and on about who will play them in the movie about their lives. That night, the ground starts shaking. It's the Northridge earthquake. Erik falls off his bunk as Lyle braces himself. Leslie's husband says they need to get out of the house because of a gas leak but she's trying to find out if the jail is still standing. 

The next day, aftershocks rattle LA and Jill (Jess Weixler) tells Leslie they won't be able to continue in their current courthouse, so they're moving the trial downtown. On the bus ride, Lyle tells Erik Norma told him John Malkovich played him in a Saturday Night Live skit. They're famous. 

Erik takes the stand. Every time he talks, the microphone pops and whines, making it hard for him to talk and Leslie has to keep giving him instructions. Lyle mutters he's messing it all up. Asked to talk about the cause of the murders, Erik's eyes fill with tears as he tries to say their father had been molesting him and that's why he told his brother. He's asked about the different kinds of molestation he experienced. The jurors and prosecutors shift in their chairs, partly because it's an uncomfortable subject matter and partly because the mic is so bad. 

When he's cross examined, Erik admits he told a lot of lies after the murders but now he's starting to tell the truth. Lyle gets angry with him on the ride back. Erik blames Lyle for the whole thing, but Lyle reminds him he's the one who wrote a script about killing his parents and he's been trying to hide his relationship with his friend. Erik denies being gay. "You made this happen," Lyle tells him. Erik reminds him that Lyle was the one who shot their parents in the head. Lyle reminds him what their parents did to them. "They got what they deserve."

Burden of proof

Leslie and her husband meet their new son, delivered via surrogate. In the prison yard, Lyle shows off photos of his girlfriend as he talks about Kirk Cameron playing him in a movie. Another aftershock hits. Erik congratulates Leslie on the birth of her son, but she cradles his face and tells him today is about him; they're going to get him out. 

As she addresses the jury, Leslie says the burden of proof beyond a reasonable doubt is on the prosecution. She reminds them of the witness statements and how it wasn't about the money. She says they bought the guns because they were defending themselves, and if they were planning a murder they could have waited for handguns. She reminds them of the cousins who knew about the abuse. Leslie says the boys were trophies for their parents and that's all they were. She asks if it would change things if her clients were female; she says it shouldn't make any difference because they were abused. 

As the brothers change their clothes, Lyle thinks the jurors are on their side and that the trial would cost too much for them to do it again. Erik isn't so sure. An aftershock interrupts their conversation. Erik thinks something shifted in the atmosphere. 

Dunne (Nathan Lane) hosts another dinner party and tells everyone Erik is terrified of the earthquakes, he has a new girlfriend named Tammy and he's writing constantly. Another aftershock hits and they all laugh. 

Leslie has the baby in her arms as she seeks out her husband during another aftershock. She looks at the baby and remembers how helpless they are. Her husband knows she isn't worried about another earthquake, she's worried about the verdict. 

Dunne thinks Lyle's testimony was brilliant but Erik looked terrible. And then there's Judalon. He recalls Judalon running up to him after the trial asking if he has contact information for the major magazines because she wants to be on the cover. Dunne's dinner guests ask what he thinks will come in the verdict. All he knows is that the ghosts of Jose and Kitty will haunt the brothers for life no matter what. 

The next day the judge declares a mistrial because the jury is deadlocked. Lyle and Erik ask their attorneys what this means. Leslie says they need to blame the men.

The VIP

Six months later, Leslie meets with all of the female jurors — she calls them her heroes — to pick their brains about how they ended up with either a not guilty or a guilty of manslaughter charge for Erik. She wanted to know what the men needed to hear from him. One woman says she felt like they were her sons while another woman says no one would kill their parents unless something was happening. Another woman brings up the fact that no one believed sexual abuse could happen to men. 

Shortly after the conversation, the women ask if they can call Erik to say hello. He asks to speak to Leslie alone, telling her he's not sure they can win. The media has turned against them and he's getting hate mail. "Something's different," he tells her. It feels like everything's over.  One of the women stays behind and tells Leslie the men on the jury really didn't like her. 

Jill meets with Lyle and tells him they have a lot of bad news. There's no money left. Lyle doesn't believe her, saying there’s going to be a book that Norma is helping him write, but Jill tells him that Norma has been releasing the recordings. Jill reads off a number of quotes from the recordings, and while he denies it's real she says he can't testify in the new trial because the recordings can be used against him. That means he has to rely on Erik for the whole thing. Jill says she won't be able to defend him anymore. 

Leslie tells Erik he's a better witness than Lyle. They can't use self-defense in the trial but Erik says that was the truth. Leslie reminds him Lyle was the one who ultimately killed their parents. He interrupts and asks if she knows how much people hate her. She made so many bad decisions in his defense and now people hate him and his life is over. He tells her she can't fix it. 

Erik is in his cell when he's told they have to clean the cellblock because they have a VIP coming in. It's OJ Simpson (Trae Ireland). That night, Erik is in his cell when he hears the guards asking if they can call him "Juice." OJ is led to the cell next to Erik’s and the guards offer to get him food and whatever he needs. "My man," one guard says as he walks away. Erik introduces himself. OJ knows who he is. OJ says he's not going to be there long because he didn't do it. Erik asks if Robert Shapiro is going to be his lawyer, revealing he was originally going to be their lawyer but he screwed them over. His final piece of advice: accept a plea bargain.

The Menendez brothers arrive in court in Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story episode 7. "Showtime" opens in the courtroom in 1983, where Dominick Dunne (Nathan Lane) awaits the verdict for the man who killed his daughter. Dunne accuses the judge of withholding evidence from the jury. "How can you sleep at night, defending this monster?" he demands of the defense attorney.  

Jamie (Jade Pettyjohn) visits Lyle (Nicholas Chavez) in prison. He assures her that trial prep is underway and he knows he's getting out. Her parents want them to break up, but he tells her to wait until this all gets settled. He asks her to say his father raped her, which shocks her. Lyle has several other visitors he asks to remember things that happened, even though they don't seem to know what he's talking about. 

Erik (Cooper Koch) watches as the attorneys listen to Lyle recounting how Jose (Javier Bardem) killed their dog and mocked his stutter. Kitty (Chloë Sevigny), he says, chased them around the house with knives. Later, Leslie (Ari Graynor) and Jill (Jess Weixler) discuss how they find Lyle's stories hard to believe; not necessarily their validity, but they question his delivery. Leslie asks Jill if she thinks it's possible Lyle came up with the whole idea and convinced Erik to go along with it? But Leslie wonders if it's actually the other way around.

Lyle, in the meantime, reads through the bags of fan mail he has received. He ends up calling one of the women, Norma, saying he and Jamie were never right for each other and now she's lying about him asking her to say things that weren't true. 

Erik meets with Dr. Vicary (Gil Ozeri) and tells him the story about his father's male lover isn't true. He made it up. Lyle tells Norma he needs to figure out why he never told Oziel about all of the sexual abuse. He thinks he needs to get his story out, and she offers to help him write a book. 

Again, but with emotions

Jill and Leslie ask Lyle to take them through the day of the murders. They're trying to get him to hone in on details like the boat trip. In his version, Erik and Lyle tried to sneak out but their parents catch them. Lyle confronts Jose, telling him he's never going to touch Erik again. Lyle accuses Kitty of standing by and watching the abuse, but she says he ruined their family. Lyle thought their parents were getting their guns out to kill them, so he and Erik got their guns out. 

Leslie doesn't believe Lyle's testimony and the jury won't believe it, either. She thinks he's making it all up and she pressures him about putting a shotgun to his mother's face. Erik supplies it was because she allowed Jose to rape them, and that's exactly what Leslie wants to see. "So, like, the emotions?" Lyle asks, adding he can cry if she needs him to. He tells the story of how he found Kitty's suicide note and tried to convince her to stop the pills and leave Jose and everything would be ok. Leslie likes the improvement. 

Dunne looks over the Menendez autopsy report in July 1993 as the brothers arrive at the courthouse in the prison bus. The courthouse is surrounded by hundreds of screaming women with signs supporting them. Lyle loves the attention, but Erik seems hesitant. As they dress for court, Dunne studies the crime scene photos. 

Leslie is ready for her opening statement. She says the trial is all about "why" the brothers killed their parents, but the answer isn't simple. Jose and Kitty both molested their sons, and the only thing Erik and Lyle are guilty of is loving their parents. They killed their parents in self-defense. 

The party

Dunne follows Leslie after her statement, calling her defense fascinatingly similar to the case she had before. She's sorry for what happened to his daughter, but she says he should thank the killer for giving him a career. 

Later, Dunne hosts a dinner party where guests ask why they couldn't have committed the murders in self-defense. He questions why Kitty asked her friends over to play bridge, and why the boys were scared of the boat trip when there were other people on board. They were also planning a trip to Princeton to furnish Lyle's new apartment and Kitty was helping Erik with his college applications. Why didn't they call the police to report the abuse? None of that happened. "They lied, right from the very beginning," he Dunne says, claiming they lied over 50 times. 

The family supported the claim that Jose was strict with the boys and not worthy of the family name, and a cousin testified Jose showered with the boys and locked their door. Dunne asks how many of his guests weren't abused by their parents, and when a guest points out it was sexual abuse, Dunne doubles down and says the boys leared about it by studying books about parricide. He thinks they introduced the sexual abuse to cover Erik's sexuality, a "secret" that isn’t really a "secret." Dunne agrees being gay doesn't make you a murderer, but he thinks it has more to do with a secret that has nothing to do with Jose. We see Kitty walking in on Erik and Lyle in the shower, and Dunne calls it a matter of transference; placing the blame on Jose to hide their secret relationship. Either way, Dunne doesn't think the brothers are entitled to forgiveness, regardless of how awful their childhoods were. 

At the end of his speech, we see Dunne sitting alone. The dinner party was in his head. He shares with the server he had two daughters before Dominique, both of which died in infancy, which is why Dominique was so special. He thought watching her die would be the worst thing to happen to him, but it was actually harder listening to John Sweeney talk about being abused as a child in his trial. Dominique was strangled for over five minutes and he got out of prison after three and a half years. After the server leaves, he breaks down in tears. 

The greatest testimony ever

Erik and Lyle prepare for court the next day. Lyle takes the stand. Cameras are recording his every move for a global audience. Jill takes Lyle through the night of the murders, then asks if Jose took pictures of them as children. He says his father took photos of their genitals. She asks about how the sexual abuse started. Lyle describes it all in horrifying detail. When she asks if he ever told anyone else, Lyle says Jose told him bad things would happen if he spoke about it. He admits he ended up doing some of the same things to Erik. Tears stream down Erik's face as Lyle says he's sorry to his brother. 

Later that night, Lyle tells Norma he gave the greatest testimony ever and he wants to write a screenplay. She's on the other line, recording their conversations and writing everything down. Dunne shows up at Leslie's house and says he's sorry because either the boys endured something unspeakable or they were coached. But he believed what Lyle said.
