A true 90s classic, The Mummy is now streaming for free on Tubi, rejoice! This is a boon for fans of the classic Brendan Fraser adventure movie (which honestly consists of most millennials) and is great timing, as The Mummy celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2024.

Watching The Mummy on Tubi is incredibly easy, as you can access the free, ad-supported streaming platform as an app on a smart TV or connected device as well as directly online. No membership is required. The only thing you'll have to deal with is intermittent ads, but that's a small price to pay (literally just your patience) to enjoy The Mummy right now.

Released in 1999, The Mummy stars Fraser as Rick O'Connell, an American expat who is recruited by a librarian, Evelyn (Rachel Weisz), and her brother Jonathan (John Hannah) as they seek to find treasure and ancient artifacts in the mythical ancient Egyptian city of Hamunaptra. However, what they find is an ancient curse that through their missteps awakens a mummy, Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo), with incredible powers that can wreak havoc on the world.

One reason why I think The Mummy has such a special place in the hearts of many people of my generation is that it feels like our classic adventure movie. While millennials had Indiana Jones playing on TV and on home video (VHS or DVD) — heck, many were even old enough to see Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade in movie theaters — Fraser's Rick O’Connell was a brand new iteration. He was funny, tough and easy to root for as he led the way in this big screen adventure.

And what an adventure it was. Very loosely based on The Mummy movie that came out in 1932, 1999's The Mummy is the perfect blend of action, comedy and horror; not an easy feat to pull off.

The Mummy got a small re-release in movie theaters to help celebrate its 25th anniversary earlier in 2024 and it is streaming on Peacock right now as well. But Tubi is far and away the easiest way to rewatch The Mummy right now. And if you're interested, you can make it a double feature as its sequel, The Mummy Returns, is also available on Tubi.

Charlize Theron gives John Wick a run for this money in the "Certified Fresh" action movie. Theron plays an MI6 agent investigating a murder in Cold War Berlin; betrayals and hard-hitting action ensue. Atomic Blonde is a blast and features one of the standout action scenes of the last 10 years with its stairway fight.

Emma (2020)

Jane Austen's classic Emma has been adapted a handful of times for the big screen (including getting a modern day adaptation with Clueless), but Anya Taylor-Joy's performance as the young woman who takes her friends' love lives into her own hands is one of the best you'll see. Witty and impeccably designed, Emma is a treat.

Fargo (1996)

The greatest trick that the Coen brothers ever played was convincing us that Fargo was based on a true story. OK, maybe not, but their Oscar-winning dark comedy about a group of inept criminals and the determined, pregnant police chief tracking them down (played by an Oscar-winning Frances McDormand), remains one of the seminal works of the brothers' career and served as the inspiration for the hit FX series Fargo.

Mud (2012)

Jeff Nichols directed the hit indie movie The Bikeriders that came out this summer, but he has long been providing fantastic hidden gems for movie fans. One such example is Mud, about two young boys who befriend a fugitive hiding out as he hopes to reconnect with this true love. Aside from Nichols' script and direction, the highlight of the movie is Matthew McConaughey's performance, one that helped defined the "McConaissance" of the early 2010s.

Warm Bodies (2013)

Romeo & Juliet with zombies is a generally accurate summation of Warm Bodies, but the movie is a whole lot better than that description might seem at first glance. Nicholas Hoult stars as a zombie who's cold, dead heart is reawakened when he sees  the living girl Julie (Teresa Palmer). Who knew it was so easy to fall for the undead.

Bronson (2008) 

Tom Hardy is an A-list star, but back in 2008 he wasn't widely known or proven as a leading man, that is until Bronson came out. The Nicolas Winding Refn movie saw Hardy star as a career criminal who creates an alternate personality named Charles Bronson over three decades spent in prison. It's a wild performance from Hardy that put him on the map. 

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)

A classic example of the German Expressionism movement of the early 20th century, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is a haunting movie even more than a 100 years later, as it depicts a hypnotist who uses a somnambulist to commit a series of murders. Watching the movie you'll see many pieces that had great influence on classic movies throughout the years. 

Life Itself (2014)

One of the best documentarians of his generation, Steve James, took his camera to capture the career and life of one of the most influential film critics ever, Roger Ebert. Life Itself, inspired by Ebert's own memoir, not only touches on the accomplishments and impact of Ebert's work, but even how his late-in-life struggles with health could not damper his spirits or his love for the movies. 

Short Term 12 (2013)

Anyone that is a fan of Brie Larson's career must watch her breakout role in Short Term 12, where she plays a supervisor at a residential treatment facility for at-risk youths. She is fantastic in the movie, and it has an ensemble that also includes the likes of John Gallagher Jr., Stephanie Beatriz, Rami Malek, Kaitlyn Dever and LaKetih Stanfield. 

Stagecoach (1939) 

John Wayne is the most iconic movie cowboy of all time, and it all started with Stagecoach. It's not his first western, but it was the one that took him to stardom as the John Ford movie was an action-packed adventure that is just as thrilling to watch today as it was back then.

Bernie (2011) 

If you enjoyed Hit Man this year (streaming exclusively on Netflix), then you are likely to also enjoy Bernie, another Richard Linklater movie based on a crazy but true story. In this case, Jack Black plays a friendly mortician who strikes up a friendship with a cantankerous, controlling, wealthy widow (Shirley MacLaine), only to eventually murder her. But what happens after that is where it gets truly unbelievable.

Charade (1963)

Fans of a good mystery thriller are going to love Charade, which features two Hollywood icons in Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn, the latter of whom becomes a target when a fortune her late husband stole comes to her. Who can she trust? Find out in this gripping trek across Europe.

His Girl Friday (1940) 

If you prefer Cary Grant's comedic roles, then there are few better than His Girl Friday, where he plays a fast talking newspaper editor desperate to keep his best reporter, and ex-wife (Rosalind Russell), from quitting and marrying another man. The Howard Hawks movie is widely considered one of the best comedies of all time.

On Golden Pond (1981)

Another set of acting legends team up in On Golden Pond, as Henry Fonda and Katharine Hepburn play an elderly married couple who reluctantly agree to care for the son of their daughter's (Jane Fonda) new boyfriend. It's a superbly acted, emotional movie that won Oscars for both Henry Fonda and Katharine Hepburn.

RBG (2018)

Ruth Bader Ginsburg was already in the history books when she became a Supreme Court justice, but over her time on the high court she became a transcendent figure in American culture. This documentary depicts that as well as recounts her incredible career from her pursuit of a law degree to her time on the bench.

Arrival (2016)

Denis Villeneuve is the current master of sci-fi thanks to his brilliant movies Dune: Part One and Dune: Part Two, but he was putting his stamp on the genre well before that, including with his excellent movie Arrival. Amy Adams stars as a language expert brought in to help communicate with an alien species after they arrive on earth. The story ends up being a twisty, emotional journey that is both heartbreaking and affirming.

Boyz n the Hood (1991)

John Singleton's Oscar-nominated debut is still a powerful look into the life of teenagers growing up in Los Angeles in the early 90s, with its climactic moment losing none of its emotional punch even more than 30 years later.

Collateral (2004)

If you prefer Tom Cruise as the hero, his classic movie Top Gun is also streaming on Pluto TV for free. But you should definitely watch his villainous turn in Michael Mann's Collateral, where he plays a hitman who takes a cab driver (Jamie Foxx) hostage to drive him around to various targets throughout the night. Foxx is also fantastic in the movie, so much so that it was one of his two Oscar nominations in 2005 (the other being Ray, for which he won Best Actor).

Fences (2016)

Denzel Washington directed and starred in this adaptation of the classic August Wilson play Fences, which sees him play a working class man struggling to come to terms with his life and his failures as he raises his family. Though Washington headlines the movie (and is fantastic), it's Viola Davis who steals the show as his wife, Rose, a performance that earned her an Oscar.

Gladiator (2000)

We're just a couple months away from the release of Gladiator 2, so now is the perfect time to catch up on the Best Picture winning movie. The Ridley Scott epic of a Roman general who becomes a slave when he defies the emperor and then seeks his revenge remains one of the best movies of the 21st century (if not ever).

Dances with Wolves (1990)

Moviegoers were supposed to be getting Chapter 2 of Kevin Costner's new western Horizon: An American Saga, however it was pulled from the release calendar for the time being. So in its place you can watch Costner's previous, Best Picture-winning western epic Dances with Wolves, which gets a bit of a bad rap seeing as it beat out Goodfellas for the trophy (a fair argument to have) but is still a sweeping and well made movie.

Jackie Brown (1997)

The opinion on Quentin Tarantino's Jackie Brown has risen in recent years, as fans rediscover Tarantino's adaptation of the Elmore Leonard source material that stars a fierce Pam Grier and features fun performances from Samuel L. Jackson, Robert De Niro and Robert Forster. See why it shouldn't be overlooked against Pulp Fiction and Inglourious Basterds.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012)

For my money one of the best coming-of-age movies to come out in recent memory, The Perks of Being a Wallflower stars Logan Lerman as Charlie, an introverted 15-year-old whose past traumas make it hard for him to connect with others, until he meets a pair of welcoming seniors, played by Emma Watson and Ezra Miller.

School of Rock (2003)

Jack Black pours his love of rock n' roll into the superb Richard Linklater comedy School of Rock, where Black plays a substitute teacher who, realizing his class' talent in music, decides to form a rock band with them. 

Tucker and Dale vs Evil (2010)

Playing off the stranded in the woods idea, Tucker and Dale vs Evil is a horror spoof that sees kind Tucker (Alan Tudyk) and Dale (Tyler Labine) being confused as dangerous killers when a group of city teens attempt to go hiking and end up accidentally killing themselves. As things escalate, this movie just gets funnier.

It maybe jarring to think that the young Sean Astin, Ke Huy Quan and Josh Brolin we see on screen are now all in their 50s, but hey, Goonies never say die.

The Graduate (1967)

There's a reason why The Graduate is constantly listed as one of the greatest movies of all time (Dustin Hoffman's dry, hilarious performance and the complicated but impactful romances are at the top of the list). Well, now it's easier than ever to watch it if it is one you've missed out on so far.

The Mummy (1999)

Millennials like myself have a special place in our hearts for The Mummy. Brendan Fraser's performance as the hero Rick O'Connell is among the Oscar-winning actor's best and most charming, and his chemistry with Rachel Weisz is fantastic. Throw in a perfect blend of action, humor and scares and it is one of the best movies you can watch at anytime, so it's an added bonus that it's free.

The Replacements (2000)

Football season is coming up, so what better time than to watch a cult classic football comedy, The Replacements. Very loosely based on the NFL strikes that took place in 1987, Keanu Reeves stars as a former college quarterback looking for a second chance alongside Gene Hackman as his coach. While Reeves and Hackman headline, you'll spot more than a few faces you recognize in the movie.

Talk to Her (2002)

Talk to Her is one of the best movie from Pedro Almodovar, one of the most accomplished Spanish filmmakers of his generation. This Oscar-winning movie (Best Original Screenplay) tells the story of the friendship between two men as they care for two women who are in deep comas.

The Big Chill (1983)

One of the original hangout movies, The Big Chill sees an all-star ensemble (Kevin Kline, Glenn Close, Tom Berenger, William Hurt, Mary Kay Place, Jeff Goldblum and JoBeth Williams) reunite and spend a long weekend together after the death of one of their friends. Between the partying (complete with a great soundtrack), the friends discuss many of the issues they are going through and test how they've changed since college.

Dial M for Murder (1954)

While it's hard to call any Alfred Hitchcock movie underrated as he is one of the most acclaimed directors ever, Dial M for Murder is usually just on the outside of the four or five movies that people first think of when discussing the master of suspense. But this story of a man attempting to commit the perfect murder of his wife has got everything you could want in a Hitchcockian thriller. 

Fist of Fury (1972)

Martial arts legend Bruce Lee only made a handful of movies during his tragically short career, but they are all entertaining. You can check out Fist of Fury for free on Xuomo, which sees Lee as a martial arts student who takes up against encroaching dojo from Japan that looks to take over the school of his former master.

Halloween (1978)

The original Halloween is an all-time classic horror/slasher movies, as Jamie Lee Curtis stars as one of the original final girls, taking on the relentless knife-wielding Michael Myers, who would become instantly iconic following this movie's release. Spooky season will be here before you know it, so might as well get started early and watch Halloween.

The Thing from Another World (1951)

John Carpenter's The Thing is rightly praised as a great sci-fi/horror movie, but it is loosely based on this 1950s creature classic, The Thing from Another World. It is definitely more hokey than Carpenter's version, but that is actually what gives it its charm. Despite it being very much of its time it still works as an entertaining watch.

It was 51 years ago today, July 20, that Bruce Lee tragically passed away. The martial arts legend was only 32 at the time. While we never got to see just how high he could take his career, even in his short life, he left behind a number of indelible movies that are a blast to watch. In fact, you can watch four of them right now for free online in honor of Bruce Lee.

Lee's The Big Boss, Fist of Fury, The Way of the Dragon and Game of Death are streaming on free, ad-supported streaming services; all four are on Pluto TV, while The Big Boss and Fist of Fury are on Tubi. And all it'll cost you is some patience as ads play a handful of times during the movie. 

These are just some of the vast library of free movies online that are available on Pluto TV and Tubi and other similar streaming platforms (ie Amazon Freevee, The Roku Channel). If you're interested in watching these classic martial arts movies from the legend himself, here are some more details on each.

The Big Boss was released in 1971 in Hong Kong before it made its way to the US in 1972 and marked Lee's first major leading role. The movie was made by Hong Kong-based production company Golden Harvest, which produced all four of these movies. In The Big Boss, Lee plays a young man sworn to a path of non-violence, but that is put to the test when his cousins start to go missing from their jobs.

Lee followed the success of The Big Boss with Fist of Fury (also known as The Chinese Connection) in 1972. Here Lee stars as a martial arts student who seeks vengeance for the death of his teacher.

That same year he made The Way of the Dragon. This movie, which Lee also wrote and directed, sees his character head to Italy and ends up defending relatives he has there against violent members of a gang, one of which is played by Chuck Norris. Yes, if you've ever wondered what the movie is where Bruce Lee fights Chuck Norris against the backdrop of the Colosseum, The Way of the Dragon is it.

Finally, there's Game of Death. Lee originally starred, wrote and was directing the movie, but he was never able to finish it before his death. His Enter the Dragon director, Robert Clouse, came to put the available footage together into a finished product, which was released in 1978. Though the result differed from Lee's original story and was ultimately not that well received, it does offer a few iconic movie nuggets: one, Lee fought NBA star Kareem Abdul-Jabar, and also the yellow jumpsuit he wore was a likely inspiration for the costume of the Bride in Kill Bill Vol. 1.

Fifty-five years ago mankind achieved one of its greatest feats ever, as NASA's Apollo 11 landed the first men on the moon. Movie fans can relive a little bit of that history with Fly Me to the Moon, a new romantic comedy starring Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum that is more earthbound, focusing on the mission launch director and the marketing maven tasked with sprucing up NASA's image heading into this monumental moment.

We enjoyed the movie, as evidenced by our Fly Me to the Moon review, and if you did too perhaps you'd be interested in watching some more about the historic Apollo 11 mission. The good news is that there's a perfect option available for free online, the 2019 documentary simply titled Apollo 11.

Available on Tubi and The Roku Channel, US viewers can watch Apollo 11 right now on those services at no cost and with no need to sign up for either service; the only thing you'll have to deal with are ads. If you prefer not to watch ads and don't mind spending a few bucks, the movie is available to rent via digital on-demand platforms as well. For UK viewers, Apollo 11 is streaming on NOW TV, as well as being available on-demand.

What makes Apollo 11 such a fascinating and exhilarating rush is that it's uses archival footage to meticulously recreate the events of the launch, space travel and eventually landing on the moon by Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins, as well as the hundreds of people at NASA that worked on the mission. Having not been around when Apollo 11 launched, it's incredible to see actual footage from it and ultimately thrilling to see playout, even as we know what happened.

The documentary, directed by Todd Douglas Miller, was incredibly well received when it was released. Despite being a surprising omission at the Oscars for its year, Apollo 11 earned many laurels, including three Emmys, and has a 99% "Certified Fresh" score on Rotten Tomatoes. 

What makes it a nice companion piece with Fly Me to the Moon is that the 2024 new movie is centered around the historic launch but also plays with the conspiracy theory that the moon landing was faked. Apollo 11 presents the first-hand video evidence from NASA and the astronauts that flew the spacecraft that we went to the moon and back.

Fly Me to the Moon is now playing exclusively in movie theaters worldwide. Again, Apollo 11 is availableo Tubi and The Roku Channel in the US, NOW TV in the UK, as well as digital on-demand platforms.

Memorial Day Weekend is here in the US. While many will celebrate with barbecues or going to see the latest blockbuster movie to celebrate the unofficial start of summer, we should not forget what Memorial Day represents: honoring the military men and women who have died in service to our country.

The movies have certainly contributed to that, depicting the bravery and sacrifices of soldiers in titles like Saving Private Ryan, Hacksaw Ridge and Best Picture winners like The Best Years of Our Lives and Platoon. But there's another movie that is available to watch for free this weekend that many of you may not have heard of but is widely seen as the first great war movie: 1925's The Big Parade.

Directed by King Vidor and starring John Gilbert as a young American soldier who experiences the horrors of World War One, The Big Parade is available to stream on Tubi, the free, ad-supported streaming service that is easily available through smart TVs or online.

As many of you may have guessed with the 1925 date, yes, The Big Parade is a silent, black-and-white movie. But those are not negatives to the movie, rather they are defining features. Even with those "limitations" (as they may be viewed by many today), The Big Parade is an astounding movie that will thrill you with its battle sequences and grasp you in its poignant love story.

What King Vidor was able to accomplish in recreating World War One battles with 1925 technology is absolutely incredible. In fact, because the movie is silent, he was able to do more with the camera to portray war than the Best Picture-winning All Quiet on the Western Front (1930), as the camera became a bit more restricted in the early days of sound pictures.

Similarly enrapturing is the love story between Gilbert's James and Melisande (Renée Adorée), a young French woman he meets before heading to the front. The scene where James must leave Melisande to go off to war is one of the most emotional scenes between lovers forced apart that I can think of.

But The Big Parade is more than a spectacle. Through the eyes of Gilbert's James, the movie looks at the horrors and cost of war, a key thing to remember as we honor those who served this Memorial Day.

As far as the legacy of The Big Parade, it was the highest-grossing silent movie in MGM history and, while the Oscars were not around at the time, it was named the best film of 1925 by Photoplay Magazine. It is also a part of the Library of Congress' National Film Registry for preservation.

There are plenty of options for things to watch this weekend in recognition of Memorial Day, including a military-themed movie marathon on TCM, a Band of Brothers marathon on AMC and a special about the classic TV comedy M*A*S*H on Fox. But if you add The Big Parade to your watchlist this weekend, I'm confident you won't be disappointed.

Who Killed Malcolm X? (Netflix)

Who Killed Malcolm X? is probably our favorite documentary on the list. The docuseries not only follows his life, but also dives into his death, helping launch the reinvestigation into his murder. Upon prosecutors looking into the homicide again, Muhammad Aziz and Khalil Islam were exonerated for the murders, a feat long overdue.

"Decades after the assassination of African American leader Malcolm X, an activist embarks on a complex mission seeking truth in the name of justice."

Malcolm X: Make It Plain (PBS & YouTube)

Malcolm X: Maike It Plain is a documentary created by PBS, although it's not as easy to find on the network's webpage. But no worries, the video is listed on both YouTube and Vimeo. Here is a brief synopsis of the film: 

"This in-depth film portrait goes straight to the heart, mind and message of one of the modern era's most complex figures. Actress Alfre Woodard narrates the special.

"This film chronicles Malcolm X's remarkable journey from his birth on May 19, 1925, in Omaha, Nebraska, to his assassination at the Audubon Ballroom in New York City on February 21, 1965. His compelling story is told through the memories of people who had close personal and working relationships with him: prominent figures such as Maya Angelou, Ossie Davis and Alex Haley; Nation of Islam associates, including Wallace D. Muhammad, the son of Elijah Muhammad; and family members, including his wife, Betty Shabazz, and his oldest daughter, Attallah Shabazz. Blood Brothers: Malcolm X & Muhammad Ali (Netflix)

Blood Brothers: Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali is a more unique look at the civil rights leader's life as it parallels it with the greatest boxer of all time. Furthermore, the Netflix documentary follows the deep friendship that once existed between the two. Here is the official synopsis of the movie: 

"Blood Brothers tells the extraordinary and ultimately tragic story of the friendship between two of the most iconic figures of the 20th century: Muhammad Ali, the greatest boxer of all time, and Malcolm X, the Nation of Islam's — and black America's — most incendiary and charismatic leader.

I Am Not Your Negro (Peacock, Roku & Tubi)

The Oscar-nominated and BAFTA-winning documentary is based on renowned writer James Baldwin's manuscript, Remember This House. It explores race relations and the struggle for civil rights in America through the recollections of not only Malcolm X, but Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Medgar Evers as well. 

Here is a synopsis of the documentary: 

"Director Raoul Peck envisions the book James Baldwin never finished — a radical narration about race in America, using the writer's original words. He draws upon James Baldwin's notes on the lives and assassinations of Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. to explore and bring a fresh and radical perspective to the current racial narrative in America."

Gangsters: America's Most Evil on Prime Video

Gangsters: America's Most Evil is a docuseries highlighting some of the most infamous and ruthless bosses of the underworld in American history. In season 1 episode 3, titled "The Godmother: Griselda Blanco," viewers get a detailed look at how the queenpin became the face of cocaine trade in Miami.  

Here is a synopsis of the episode: 

"Griselda Blanco, 'The Godmother,' is suspected of scores of murders while transporting cocaine from Colombia to New York, Miami & Southern California. On the run for 10 years, her trial ended in scandal and she was eventually deported back to Colombia."

While Gangsters: America's Most Evil season 1 is available on Hulu in the US, episode 3 is not available on the streaming service. If you'd like to watch the Griselda-focused episode, you'll need to purchase it on Prime Video in both the US and UK.  

Evil Lives Here on Max

Evil Lives Here is a unique docuseries in that it tells the story of a dangerous criminal through the eyes of a family member. In season 4 episode 3, titled "The Last Blanco," the story of Griselda is told through the eyes of her only surviving son, Michael Corleone Blanco.

Queen of Cocaine on Tubi 

If you’re looking for a traditional Griselda documentary as opposed to a Griselda episode of a docuseries, Tubi is currently streaming Queen of Cocaine for free. Allow us to prepare you, this documentary paints an even deadlier picture of Griselda's reign in Miami than what was shown in the Netflix drama. 

Here is the synopsis for Queen of Cocaine: 

"Griselda Blanco was one bad criminal: a savvy businesswoman, an international drug lord and a sociopathic killer who rose to the top as one of the most feared Queen Pins in history. Cocaine Cowboys 2: Hustlin' with the Godmother on Tubi

Another free option on Tubi, Cocaine Cowboys 2: Hustlin' with the Godmother is the 2008 followup to 2006's Cocaine Cowboys. In the sequel, viewers learn that Griselda was still very much involved in the drug game while behind bars and tied to fellow drug dealer, Charles Cosby.

Cocaine Cowboys: The Kings of Miami on Netflix

Unlike those previously mentioned, Cocaine Cowboys: The Kings of Miami doesn't focus on the story of Griselda but rather examines the stories of Sal Magluta and Willy Falcon, two childhood best friends who became legends in the Miami underworld in their own right, following in the vein of Griselda. 

Here is a synopsis of the docuseries: 

"Two childhood friends go from high school dropouts to the most powerful drug kingpins in Miami in this true story of a crime saga that spanned decades."

Cocaine Cowboys: The Kings of Miami is available to stream on Netflix, along with other true crime documentaries. 

Tubi lacks the name recognition that some of the bigger streaming services have, but their LGBTQ+ movie library has a little something for everyone. There are documentaries and true life stories for those who are longing to learn more about their history, movies that explore LGBTQ+ identity through different cultural lenses and a mix of new and old classic LGBTQ+ romantic comedies and dramas.

Single Man Problems: Volume One (2023)

Single Man Problems: Volume One is a comedy/drama that follows the story of a young Black man trying to navigate the gay romantic world. In his process of exploring romance he's forced to unpack his own personal baggage while facing the reality that dating is just hard. 

The Matthew Shepard Story (2002)

In 1998, the hate-motivated murder of college student Matthew Shepard shocked and outraged the nation. Matthew was horrifically beaten and then tied to a remote fence post and left to die by two men who targeted him because he was gay.

The Matthew Shepard Story is a dramatization of the facts of Matthew Shepard’s murder that is also infused with the compassion and grief that led communities to re-examine their treatment of LGBTQIQA+ people. The movie doesn’t gloss over the hate and homophobia spotlighted during the investigation and trial of the two murderers of Matthew Shepard. The legislation that was proposed and passed in the aftermath of this horrific murder formed the basis that today makes sure murders motivated by hate carry enhanced penalties.

It's an important story that all LGBTQIA+ people should see to remember the life of Matthew Shepard and how his murder changed the way LGBTQIA+ people are viewed by society. — Sonya Iryna 

Go Fish (1994)

One of the first movies that featured lesbians telling their own stories, Go Fish was shot on a shoestring budget and ended up turning a significant profit, proving that there was some commercial viability to movies made by and for lesbians for the first time. Aside from its historical value, this is just a fun love story and a true artifact of its time. Shot in black and white, Go Fish follows the single Max (Guinevere Turner), who is reluctant to let her roommates set her up with one of their friends. Accompanied by a lesbian Greek Chorus, Max ultimately finds true love, but it’s the aesthetic that makes this film an LGBTQ+ classic. — Sara Century

But I'm a Cheerleader (1999)

Megan is a high schooler whose world falls apart when her family and friends stage an intervention, informing her that she is, in fact, a lesbian. This shocks and dismays her and she is immediately sent to True Directions, a conversion therapy camp, where she meets a whole slew of queer and questioning teens. Quickly developing an attraction to the cantankerous Graham, Megan starts to believe that there might not be anything wrong with being gay, after all. Comical, colorful, and truly absurd, this has long been hailed as one of the great LGBTQ+ comedies of the late 90s and introduced a lot of queer audiences to the great comedic timing of both Clea Duvall and Natasha Lyonne. — Sara Century

More than Friends

More than Friends is your classic "I’m in love with my best friend, but I’m engaged to someone else" movie. Although in this film, the leading lady is caught in a triangle between her boyfriend and her platonic girlfriend. 

The Birdcage (1996)

The Birdcage serves as a classic Robin Williams comedy. In it, the late comedian plays a gay cabaret owner, and he and his loving partner (Nathan Lane) attempt to portray being heterosexual in an effort to impress their son’s right-wing future inlaws. 

Kiss Me (2012)

At her father’s 60th birthday and in the wake of his proposal to his live-in girlfriend, daughter Mia announces her engagement to her longtime partner Tim. In respect for her father’s wishes, she goes to spend time with his fiance’s family, including her daughter, Frida. Sharing a bedroom, the two find themselves in a surprising whirlwind love affair, which ends when they must both return to their partners. Their relationships both quickly end, but they are both much more broken up about one another. Complicated interpersonal relationships abound in this sweet, touching love story. — Sara Century

The Brandon Teena Story (1998)

Brandon Teena was a transgender man who was murdered in 1993 along with two other people. Teena was targeted by the murderers because he was trans. This documentary about the brief and tragic life of Brandon Teena shines a spotlight on the very real dangers that transgender people have faced in the past and continue to face today. The shocking events surrounding the days immediately before the murder and the aftermath of the killing serve as a sobering reminder of how far culture has come in acceptance of LGBTQ+ people and how far it still has to go.

The documentary includes interviews with the people who knew and loved Brandon as well as interviews with the killers, archival footage of the trial and investigation and other important historical records. — Sonya Iryna

Monster (2003)

Monster stars Charlize Theron as Aileen Wuornos, a street prostitute that winds up murdering seven male clients. Additionally, the movie explores Wuornos' romantic endeavors with her girlfriend, Selby Wall played by Christina Ricci. This is a crime drama inspired by true events. 

Fire Song (2015)

Shane is a Two-Spirited teen whose elder sister recently died by suicide, leaving him to struggle with the decision of whether or not to leave his family and the reservation behind in order to go to college in the big city or to stay at home as his sister had in order to take care of those that need him. Knowing what that responsibility did to her and trying to balance his myriad romantic interests leaves Shane at a crossroads. This could be just another coming-of-age story, but by viewing the role of depression and the legacy of long term mental health struggles within First Nations communities, filmmaker Adam Garnet Jones gave us a genuinely felt and vital debut feature. — Sara Century

Cloudburst (2011)

The elderly Dottie is placed in a nursing home by her daughter, but her partner of many years, Stella, comes and gets her so they can get married in Nova Scotia. This leads to a road trip in which they pick up a young hitchhiker traveling to see his dying mother. Stella slowly accepting that Dottie is aging and that she will inevitably lose her soon is the ultimate drive of the film and it’s every bit as heartbreaking and beautiful as it sounds. That said, there’s still a lot of humor in this film and the touching dynamic of longtime partners in their later years trying to have the wedding so long denied them is expertly portrayed by industry greats Olympia Dukakis and Brenda Ficker. — Sara Century

The Celluloid Closet (1995)

This fun documentary is based on a book by Vito Russo, who was involved in the creation of the documentary. The Celluloid Closet dives deep into the history of Hollywood, especially during the Golden Age of film, to unearth the stories and scandals of LGBTQ+ actors and their impact on the film industry. With archival film footage, news accounts and even some first-hand stories and gossip, this documentary tells the heartaches, triumphs and struggles of LGBTQ+ actors trying to live authentically and make their mark on the entertainment industry. Reading between the lines of the journals, letters and other documents written by some of the most famous (and closeted) actors in Hollywood gives LGBTQ+ viewers a sense of the valuable contributions of these actors and what their private lives were really like. — Sonya Iryna

The Pass (2016)

Two young professional football players named Ade and Jason have been in a prestigious football academy since early childhood. Sharing a hotel room the night of a big game at the age of 19, the two kiss and the moment sends echoes throughout the next decade as the struggle of remaining closeted carries through. This film touches on the importance of team sports for so many while also giving us a complicated, sensual relationship between its protagonists. Jason and Ade’s unresolved feelings for one another make up so much of the tension in this film and their chemistry is off-the-charts. — Sara Century

Naz & Maalik (2015)

Naz and Maalik are two closted Muslim teenagers who have recently begun a romantic relationship in secret. The film follows them as they spend time together one long afternoon, unknowingly trailed by FBI agents due to some trouble they’ve landed themselves in. While the two grow closer, the threat of being found out looms. The relationship between Naz and Maalik is where the story truly shines, spotlighting their differences and then forgetting them entirely as the two share the joys of secret queer romance. Lengthy segments full of revealing dialogue are the film’s greatest strength as we get to know these characters better with every scene. — Sara Century

How to Win at Checker Every Time (2015)

At the opening of the movie, we meet a tough gangster named Oat, who almost immediately plunges us back into the memories of his troubled youth. Orphaned at an early age and living with an aunt, Oat’s hero is his openly gay brother Ek, whose boyfriend Jai appears regularly. Ek supports his family via sex work and lives in fear that he might get drafted to service and be forced to leave his life behind. Meanwhile, Oat is captivated by Ek’s queer community and forms new bonds within it. Bittersweet and complicated, How to Win at Checkers Every Time is an emotional story that keeps an open mind towards the choices its characters are forced to make in life. — Sara Century

Gun Hill Road (2011)

When convict Enrique returns to his family after a lengthy stint in prison, he returns to a wife and child that aren’t who he demands that they be. He becomes increasingly angry as his child quietly transitions behind the scenes, trying to keep it a secret from him. He and Vanessa go through several confrontations and Enrique must grapple with the question of whether or not he can be the father his child needs. Though this film does come with a trigger warning due to the physical and emotional violence her character deals with, Harmony Santana is brilliant in the role of Vanessa and her moments of gender euphoria are beautiful. Gun Hill Road isn’t the easiest watch, but there is something in it that rings painfully true, regardless. — Sara Century

Bit (2019)

Vampire stories have long carried elements of queerness, dating at least as far back as the novella Carmilla in 1872. These stories generally entail a lot of angst and death, but it need not always be that way. Case in point, in Bit, the teenage Laurel moves to LA and runs headfirst into a group of cool vampires who practice intersectional feminism. The vamps welcome her into their group, but of course, their murdery ways leave Laurel feeling conflicted. Laurel is played here by Supergirl’s Nicole Maines and the great casting is just one thing that makes this quirky horror comedy as fun as it is. — Sara Century

Women Who Kill (2016)

If you’ve ever read a gripping true crime novel and then slowly began to suspect that a certain person you know could secretly be a serial killer, then the plot of Women Who Kill will hit a chord. Two exes, Morgan and Jean, still living together despite their breakup, host a popular true crime podcast together. Morgan meets a mysterious woman who she begins dating, but immediately clues are dropped that lead her to suspect that her new love interest might be behind a grisly series of murders. Mostly intended as a tongue-in-cheek romp, Women Who Kill also manages to speak to that hidden anxiety inside each of us that asks us how well we truly know the people around us. — Sara Century

Chutney Popcorn (1999)

When Sarita is devastated by the discovery that she is infertile, her lesbian sister Reena impulsively offers to be her surrogate. She takes on this responsibility in hopes of pleasing her mother, who has long disapproved of Reena’s lesbianism and considers her to be selfish. Reena’s girlfriend Lisa is appalled that no one consulted her on this major life change and though she tries to be present throughout the pregnancy, Reena’s commitment to being truly there for her family leaves her feeling ignored. This film is about the complexities of family and relationships, but it’s also a lot about humor, personal choice and how our choices can both challenge and strengthen our bonds. — Sara Century

Outrage (2009)

Outrage is a documentary that looks at openly gay and closeted politicians who were creating and voting on laws restricting the rights of LGBTQ+ people. With in-depth interviews, news clips and detailed information about the legislative process and what laws were in place at that time that impacted the LGBTQ+ community, Outrage puts a spotlight on the powerful politicians who make decisions about the lives of LGBTQ+ people. It also points out the conflict of interest that occurs when LGBTQ+ politicians decide to vote for laws that are designed to limit or take away the rights of LGBTQ+ people. 

This documentary is a great primer on how laws get written, the process necessary to get them to the Congress for a vote and what the voting process is like. — Sonya Iryna

Carol (2015)

Carol is a very popular movie starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara that tells the story of two women falling in love despite the cultural taboo of being openly LGBTQ+ in the 1950s. It’s based on a novel called The Price Of Salt by Patricia Highsmith. Carol, a glamorous wealthy housewife trapped in an unhappy marriage, meets young aspiring photographer Therese at the department store where Therese works. Carol’s marriage is crumbling because of her affairs with other women and her husband is threatening to expose her in order to get custody of their daughter. A complicated relationship ensues where both Carol and Therese have to figure out if they’re willing to pay the price to live authentically in a time of rigid moral constructs for women. — Sonya Iryna

Alice (2022)

In Alice, directed by Krystin Ver Linden and starring Keke Palmer (Nope) as the titular character, we follow Alice's relentless pursuit of freedom while she endures the harsh bondage of slavery under the oppressive regime of a brutal plantation owner in rural Georgia. The story takes a gripping turn after a violent confrontation forces Alice to make a daring escape through the nearby woods. To her astonishment, she emerges onto an unfamiliar scene: a bustling highway. Her world is turned upside down as she realizes that the year is not what she once believed it to be – it is 1973, a time of profound social change.

Baby Boy (2001)

Initially created as a vehicle for Tupac Shakur before his untimely murder in 1996, acclaimed director John Singleton resurrected his script through then newcomers Tyrese Gibson and Taraji P. Henson. The film tells the story of Jody, a grown man still living with his mother while juggling his children with two separate women. One of the greatest hood romances in modern cinematic history, Baby Boy works by being unflinching in both scenes and message. It's also one of the last films that Singleton both wrote and directed before his death in 2019. 

The Best Man (1999)

The Best Man is a significant movie in African-American cinema, known for its exploration of complex relationships and themes within the context of a wedding. Released on October 22, 1999, with a budget of $9 million, it was directed by Malcolm D. Lee and marked his directorial debut. The movie features an ensemble cast, including Taye Diggs, Nia Long, Morris Chestnut, and Terrence Howard, among others. Beyond performing well at the box office during its opening week and grossing approximately $34 million, the film received a sequel and limited series, The Best Man: The Final Chapters. 

Blackstop Boneyard (2021)

Black horror films have seen a renaissance over the past decade thanks to the likes of Jordan Peele and Nikyatu Jusu. This has been reflected on the urban budget B-list tier of feature films as well. One great example on Tubi is Blackstop Boneyard. Taking place in the rural south, a group of white college age girls wind up on a haunted piece of land. The problem is that the land was stolen from two Black men wrongfully killed during the Civil War. Offering full out camp alongside some light racial commentary, Blackstop Boneyard is a captivating watch. 

Favorite Son (2021)

Hunger Games: Catching Fire actor E. Roger Mitchell plays a reverend with two twin sons in a gospel group played by Jonathan McReynolds and Power’s Rotimi. Favorite Son is directed by popular 90s actress Robin Givens who has had a run directing movies within the indie-budget urban drama scene as well. 

Finding Kendrick Johnson (2021)

Filmmaker Jason Pollock delves into the enigmatic circumstances surrounding the tragic demise of Kendrick Johnson, an African American adolescent whose lifeless body was found within a Valdosta, Ga., high school gymnasium. Narrated by singer, actress, activists and author Jennifer Lewis (Black-ish), Finding Kendrick Johnson explores the circumstances that led to Johnson's death.

Fruitvale Station (2013)

Fruitvale Station will forever be known as the movie that set the stage for Ryan Coogler's directorial dominance and Michael B. Jordan[s A-list actor status. Focusing on the life of Oscar Grant, a young African American man who was fatally shot by a transit police officer on New Year's Day in 2009, the film was a success for many reasons. Beyond serving as a poignant tribute to Grant's life while highlighting the systemic problems that led to his tragic death, it was a box office success during its initial limited release. 

A Good Day for Everybody (2022)

Sounder is based on the novel by William H. Armstrong that tells the story of a family of Black sharecroppers living in the Depression-era South. The eldest son must come of age after his father is thrown in jail on the charge of stealing food and the family dog, Sounder, runs away.

Sounder starred Cicely Tyson and Paul Winfield as the parents, both of whom would receive Oscar nominations for Best Actress and Best Actor, respectively. Kevin Hooks starred as the son.

Sounder was a landmark film for both the story it told and the reception that it had among audiences, as it was one of the top grossing movies of 1972.

The Great Debaters (2007)

First and foremost, The Great Debaters sheds light on an essential but often overlooked aspect of American history: the struggles and achievements of African Americans in the 1930s, particularly in the field of competitive debate. It tells the inspiring true story of the Wiley College debate team, a small, historically black college in Texas, as they overcome racial prejudice and societal barriers to compete against top-tier universities. Besides becoming another winner for Denzel Washington as a lead actor, the movie released in December 2007 also his directorial follow up to 2002's Antoine Fisher. 

Heavy (2021)

Since making his big screen debut in 2009 music biopic Notorious, Jamal Woolard has become extremely popular within the Black indie sub-genre of movies. At the current moment, he has over a few dozen films within the indie urban drama category, including Heavy. Woolard plays Rome in the DeMarcus Bailey directed movie about Renz, a man caught between the drug dealing and the woman who wants him to leave the streets alone. 

Higher Learning (1995)

Another highlight of John Singleton's directorial run during the 90s, Higher Learning explores various social and racial issues prevalent on college campuses when released in January 1995. The movie's release in the mid-1990s was particularly timely, as it addressed pressing societal concerns related to race, gender and privilege. Higher Learning challenged viewers to confront their own biases and prejudices, sparking important conversations about the need for tolerance and understanding in higher education institutions. John Singleton's direction and the movies's diverse cast, including Ice Cube, Jennifer Connelly, Michael Rapaport, Regina King and Tyra Banks, contributed to its enduring importance in the realm of socially conscious cinema. 

House Party (1990)

Released March 9, 1990, with a budget of $2.5 million, House Party is a comedy that follows the adventures of two high school friends, Kid (played by Christopher "Kid" Reid) and Play (played by Christopher "Play" Martin), as they navigate a series of comedic mishaps while trying to attend a legendary house party. One of the key elements that makes the Reginald Hudlin directed movie important is its representation of African American youth culture, music and dance. The movie's soundtrack featured iconic hip-hop and R&B artists of the time, including Kid 'n Play themselves, making it a cultural touchstone and propelling the music and dance styles into the mainstream. 

Menace II Society (1993)

The pinnacle of the urban drama that began its mainstream dominance following Boyz n the Hood's ground breaking release, Menace II Society is pure hood hedonism. Directed by the Hughes Brothers in their directorial debut, the story of Kayden "Caine" Reeves (Tyrin Turner) is both beautiful and ultimately tragic. Following the day in the life of Caine, an adolescent living in Watts with his grandparents, the film revolves around the relationship with his homie O Dog (Larenz Tate) and love interest Ronnie (Jada Pinket Smith). Menace II Society is a brutal and violent look into inner city Los Angeles during the early '90s. 

Paper Line (2022)

Paper Line has a strange yet effective plot. Seven individuals committing to an HBCU in Florida experience a profound surprise when they inadvertently enlist themselves to become members of a Black fraternity of skilled martial artists. Directed by Ryan Watson, the movie features a bonkers story and some decently paced action sequences.  

Secret Society (2021)

One of the boldest crime dramas in the indie urban genre in recent years is Secret Society. The film is about two gold diggers hiding a massive secret. Once that gets out, it threatens to ruin their hustle and even their lives. Ironically, the massive plot twist is revealed within the first 15 minutes. What happens next is an interesting story about sex work and the plight of trans women in a world that problematically exploits them. The film is also directed by Jamal Hill, known for his work in budget cult classics including Brotherly Love and Deuces.  

Shottas (2002)

One of the most respected indie-hood movies, Shottas was released in 2002 and continues to be a cult classic. Starring Ky-Mani Marley and Spragga Benz, the Jamaican crime film is about two men creating a drug ring in Kingston alongside Miami. The film also features guest appearances from Wyclef Jean and DJ Khaled. 

Sons of a Preacher (2023)

One of the few urban dramas made for families, Sons of a Preacher is a unique faith-based film with some solid acting and cinematography. The life of a family is ripped apart once a pastor of a church kicks his son out of the house for not living to his standard. With the other son becoming head of the church following the death of the preacher, he tries to get the wayward son to return. Sons of a Preacher is an interesting take on the Prodigal Son through the lens of the Black church. 

Sorry to Bother You (2018)

Sorry to Bother You is a thought-provoking satirical movie released on July 6, 2018, and directed by music artist Boots Riley. Its unique blend of social commentary, surrealism, and dark humor made it a critical darling and a cultural touchstone. The movie's importance lies in its fearless exploration of pertinent societal issues. Set in an alternate reality Oakland, it tackles themes like corporate exploitation, racial inequality and the dehumanizing effects of capitalism. Not only does the movie deliver amazing performances from  LaKeith Stanfield, Tessa Thompson and Danny Glover among others, it set the stage for Boots Riley to deliver the fantastic Amazon limited series I'm A Virgo years later. 

Tiffany the Doll (2022)

Another horror film on the list, Tiffany the Doll recently went viral through social media due to its over the top tendencies blending with exceedingly low budget. Directed by Felicia Rivers, Tiffany the Doll blends man-killer fantasy of sci-fi cult classic Species with obvious allusions to killer doll horror subgenre made popular through Child's Play (and more recently, M3GAN). Tiffany the Doll is literally about killer sex dolls who have a thing for murdering their unsuspecting owners. Despite taboos within the Black community about sex, the themes of the film about sex are fairly radical between the hilarious dialogue and murder scenes.

21 Jump Street

Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum are the actors most associated with 21 Jump Street nowadays, but the popular films were based on the hit 1980s TV series that starred a young Johnny Depp and others as young-looking cops who would go undercover to investigate youth crimes.

Joining Depp on the force throughout 21 Jump Street’s five seasons were Dustin Nguyen, Peter DeLuise, Holly Robinson Peete and Steven Williams.

Charlie's Angels 

Hollywood has tried to remake Charlie’s Angels for the big screen a few times — to varying success with Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu, then less so with Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska — but the gold standard trio of Charlie’s Angels is still probably Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson and Jaclyn Smith.

TV viewers have always loved a good mystery, and for many years the go-to detective was Columbo, the beloved, bumbling but brilliant detective portrayed by Peter Falk.

Initially running from 1971-1978,  Columbo would make triumphant returns to TV with a run from 1989-1994, and then as one-off episodes in 1995, 1997, 1998, 2001 and 2003, all of which are available to watch on Tubi.

Cosmos: Possible Worlds

The Dick Van Dyke Show

The Dick Van Dyke Show is widely considered one of the gold standards of TV from the 1960s. Created by Carl Reiner, the show followed the work and home life of a TV writer played by Dick Van Dyke and his wife, played by Mary Tyler Moore.

If you caught Disney Plus' WandaVision, you saw some of the legacy of The Dick Van Dyke Show, as it was used as both inspiration for some of the earlier episodes and had a few clips shown later in the season.

The Flintstones

Everybody’s favorite Stone Age family has made their way to Tubi. Fred, Wilma, Barney, Betty, Dino and little Pebbles and Bamm Bamm get into funny and wacky adventures in Bedrock.

One of the all-time great animated shows from creators Joseph Barbera and William Hannaa, The Flintstones was the first primetime animated show, a predecessor to  The Simpsons.

Hannibal

The character of Hannibal Lectre is iconic thanks to the performance of Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs. But the infamous cannibal made an impression on TV audiences with Hannibal.

Mads Mikkelsen took on the role on Lectre in the series, a prequel to the events of Silence of the Lambs, where Lectre assists FBI agent Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) in solving violent grimes (the show really pushed the limits for broadcast TV), all while hiding his own secret identity as a serial killer. The show also got into the plotline of the Thomas Harris book Red Dragon.

Hannibal had a passionate fanbase, which should be happy to know they can watch all three seasons of the show for free on Tubi.

Hell's Kitchen 

Gordon Ramsay has become one of TV’s most prolific chefs, with a multitude of series that he takes part in. Some see him lending hands to struggling businesses or encouraging young chefs, but it was his incredible rants and devastating insults in the competition series Hell’s Kitchen that made him a star.

Hell’s Kitchen brings together aspiring professional chefs as they attempt to win challenges dealing both in the kitchen as well as the dining experience. In addition to trying to be the best, they have to contend with Ramsay’s imposing presence throughout the challenges.

The Joy of Painting With Bob Ross

Bob Ross became a beloved figure with The Joy of Painting with Bob Ross, his simple yet endlessly enjoyable painting program. We all joke about painting our happy little bushes, but it is all in jest as Ross' wholesome nature could charm even the biggest cynic.

We must have done something right as a society for us to be treated with the performance from Kevin Kline in A Fish Called Wanda. Kline is absolutely hysterical as the bumbling (but don't call him stupid), quick-tempered criminal Otto, so much so that he won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

Of course there's so much to love from A Fish Called Wanda, which tells the story of four criminals trying to double cross each other in order to get their hands on the loot. The cast is incredible, which in addition to Kline includes Jamie Lee Curtis, John Cleese and Michael Palin, and features an Oscar-nominated script from Cleese and director Charles Crichton (also nominated, a rarity for a comedy).

The Apartment (1960)

Billy Wilder's Best Picture winner is a classic romantic comedy, with all-time great performances from Jack Lemmon as a hopefully businessman who lets his higher ups use him in the hopes it'll lead to advancement and Shirley MacLaine as the woman he has his heart set on. Things get complicated though when she ends up in his apartment, distraught over another man, and he is forced to take care of her.

Wilder's writing shines through in the movie and remains a great watch more than 60 years later.

The Death of Stalin (2017)

Armando Iannucci has proven to be the king of political satire with Veep and In the Loop, but he took his razor sharp wit all the way back to the Soviet Union with The Death of Stalin. With the likes of Steve Buscemi, Simon Russell Beale, Jeffrey Tambor, Andrea Riseborough, Michael Palin, Jason Isaacs and more, he mines the dark humor from the frenzied power grabs after the death of Soviet leader Stalin in 1953. 

The Farewell (2019)

The Farewell is a beautiful tale on the importance of family from Lulu Wang and starring Awkwafina. The movie centers on Billi (Awkwafina), who goes back to China to see her dying grandmother. The problem is that no one has told her grandmother that she is dying and the family wants to keep it a secret. Hilarity and heartwarming moments abound in this 2019 movie from Lulu Wang, who we are waiting for with bated breath to deliver her next project.

The Green Knight (2021)

You won't see many movies like The Green Knight. David Lowery's adaptation of the medieval epic poem about Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is a lyrical journey starring Dev Patel, Joel Edgerton and Alicia Vikander with one of the most interesting endings of a movie you'll see in quite some time. It is a movie with all the potential to become a cult classic, so get in on that trend early by watching it right now.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016)

Before Taika Waititi made the best Thor movie for Marvel or won an Oscar for Jojo Rabbit, he was an indie filmmaker from New Zealand making unique gems like Hunt for the Wilderpeople. Starring Sam Neill and Julian Dennison, Hunt for the Wilderpeople follows a rebellious kid and his foster uncle as they try to create a new life for themselves in the New Zealand bush.

While it doesn't have superheroes or vampires or a kid's imaginary version of Adolf Hitler, Hunt for the Wilderpeople has the Waititi wit and weirdness in spades and is a must-see for anyone who is a fan of his work thus far.

Ida (2013)

Pawel Pawlikowski nabbed a Best Director nomination for his film Cold War in 2018, but he first introduced himself to many American film fans with the 2013 drama Ida set, in post-World War II Poland.

The film follows Anna, a novice nun set to take her vows when she discovers that her family is actually Jewish, and that she has an aunt who is her only living relative. Together, they set off to learn about their family's tragic fate and just what it means to each of them. Ida is a haunting and touching story from one of Europe's top directors right now. 

John Wick

John Wick: Chapter 4 is one of the best new movies of 2023, but if you need to play catchup at all with the action franchise before seeing the latest entry, you can do so with the help of Tubi as all three previous entries to the action franchise are streaming on the platform — John Wick, John Wick: Chapter 2 and John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum. See John Wick's journey of revenge from the very beginning all in one place and for free. 

Judas and the Black Messiah (2021)

Based on the true story of Fred Hampton, Judas and the Black Messiah is an engrossing slice of history featuring magnificent performances from LaKeith Stanfield, Dominique Fishback and Daniel Kaluuya, who won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for the role. The movie originally was only available to stream on HBO Max, so now that it is on a free service like Tubi hopefully more people will catch up with it.

Just Mercy (2019)

If you need an inspiring true story, then you should look no further than Just Mercy. Michael B. Jordan stars as a young lawyer who makes it his mission to help wrongly imprisoned people, including a man on death row, played by Jamie Foxx. Brie Larson and Tim Blake Nelson also star in the movie that looks at how a group of dedicated people challenged failures in the justice system. 

Minari (2020)

From Lee Isaac Chung (who many people may now known as the creator of Beef) and starring The Walking Dead's Steven Yeun, Minari is an incredible story about a Korean family who moves to Arkansas in the 1980s in search of the American dream. Try not to fall in love with young actor Alan Kim as the family's youngest son or Youn Yuh-jung's hilarious grandmother, it's almost impossible.

Mustang (2015)

Mustang is an Oscar-nominated movie from that in a nutshell can be described as a Turkish version of The Virgin Suicides. That's not giving Mustang its proper due, though. Mustang is a beautiful film about the bonds of sisters and the desire to live the life they want. 

The five sisters at the center of the story are orphans, who after being seen innocently playing around with a group of boys, are confined by their conservative guardians and lined up for arranged marriages. Some of the girls manipulate things to their advantage, while others are forced to find different ways to take back control of their lives.

Shoplifters (2018)

This Palme d'or-winning movie from Kore-eda Hirokazu is an incredible watch as it follows a family of petty thiefs living on the margins of Tokyo. However, when one of the children is arrested, secrets about the family become exposed. Shoplifters is a masterful film. Don't let any kind of aversion to subtitles prevent you from enjoying it.

Short Term 12 (2013)

Brie Larson has an Oscar and heads up Captain Marvel, but for many her first attention grabbing role was in the indie drama Short Term 12. Based on director Destin Daniel Cretton's own experiences working in a residential treatment facility for kids, Short Term 12 sees Larson's Grace try to help the kids under her care, while also dealing with her own issues. The cast is full of future stars, including John Gallagher Jr., Kaitlyn Dever, Stephanie Beatriz, Rami Malek and LaKeith Stanfield.

Terrifier 2 (2022)

People reportedly passed out when watching Terrifier 2 in movie theaters, so if that put you off from seeing this buzzy horror title, having the ability to watch at home may help. Art the Clown returns to scare the daylights out of the movie's characters and viewers in this under-the-radar movie that seems destined to become a cult classic.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)

While it may not be the first ever horror film, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is the common ancestor to many films in the genre and even some outside of the world of horror. The German silent film tells the story of the mysterious Dr. Caligari and his somnambulist Cesare, who the doctor unleashes in the night to commit murders. 

One of the trademarks of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is the expressionist designs used for the sets that were popular in post-World War I Germany. You can practically draw a straight line from Dr. Caligari to the work of Tim Burton.

While the film may not be exactly scary to today’s modern horror audiences, even 100 years later its eerie tone and twist ending can leave viewers unsettled. — Michael Balderston

Count Dracula (1970)

Most people today know Christopher Lee either from his roles in the Star Wars prequels or the Lord of the Rings movies, but before any of that Lee was a horror legend in large part because of the films in which he played Dracula.

Lee portrayed the iconic vampire in 10 films, of which Count Dracula is readily available to watch on Tubi. This film follows the traditional plot of Dracula pretty well, as it sees the legendary vampire pursued by familiar foes in Professor Van Helsing and Jonathan Harker, as well as featuring other well known Dracula characters Renfield and Mina Harker.

Besides Bela Lugosi, there may not be a more recognizable Dracula than Christopher Lee. — Michael Balderston

Dark Shadows: The Beginning (1966) 

If you’ve never watched the classic American gothic series Dark Shadows are you really even a horror fan? Dark Shadows may seem campy now, but in the 1960’s when the series began the supernatural and vampiric content in the show was very shocking. It was modeled after the daytime soap operas that were incredibly popular, so it featured a lot of mystery, love triangles and drama, just set in a world of vampires, ghosts, werewolves and other supernatural beings. 

The show follows Victoria Winters as she takes up residence in the spooky town of Collinswood, Maine, and experiences supernatural events as she delves into the dark history of the town and the Collins family the town is named for.

The series ran from 1966 to 1971 and there have been spinoffs, movies and remakes of it over the years. But you can watch the first episodes of this classic horror series on Tubi TV right now. — Sonya Iryna 

The Devil’s Rejects (2005)

The Devil’s Rejects is the second film in Rob Zombie’s Firefly trilogy. It’s a sequel to House of 1000 Corpses and picks up seven months after the events at the end of House Of 1000 Corpses. The police are closing in the remaining members of the Firefly clan. Knowing they won’t come out of a fight with police alive, they plan on making a stand in a way that only this murderous clan can. 

Fans liked this film much better than the first, but it still wasn’t a huge commercial success at the time. As Rob Zombie put out more horror films his early films, including Devil’s Rejects, gained a huge cult following. Fans of 80s slasher films will see their influence in Zombie’s work. 

The Firefly trilogy is perfect for a Halloween movie night but if you’re going to watch only one of the three this is the one to watch. — Sonya Iryna 

Escape Room (2017)

Escape rooms are popular events where people need to solve a series of puzzles in order to get out of the room. Escape Room is a 2017 film that turns that premise on its head, where a group of friends think they’re going to a fun escape room event but the game becomes real. 

In Escape Room, a woman throws a party for her boyfriend’s birthday that includes a trip to an escape room. But, the game turns deadly when she is taken captive and tortured as the others must solve puzzles to rescue her and save their lives. 

The premise of Escape Room is similar to the Saw franchise where people are put in extreme situations where they must use their brains to escape but the games are rigged against them. These films have a nice mix of psychological horror and jump scares.  — Sonya Iryna 

Famously Haunted: Amityville (2021)

Tubi TV is broadening their library and creating some original films like this documentary about the infamous Amityville Horror house. On the heels of the death of Ronne DeFeo, who shot and killed his entire family claiming a malevolent spirit in the house drove him to kill, interest in the story was reignited.

The documentary is a mix of archival footage, interviews and recreations to dig deep into the house’s history, the experiences of people who lived there or visited there and whether or not DeFeo was telling the truth about the murders he committed. 

Supernatural horror fans and true crime fans will be fascinated by new information in this documentary and the commentary from the people who had first hand experiences in the house. — Sonya Iryna 

Ghosts of War (2020)

Nothing will ever touch the horror of war, so when a horror movie combines with World War II it takes things to the next level. 2020's Ghosts of War features a team of US soldiers guarding a French Chateau. Little do they know, they're being stalked by something terrifying. The place is haunted, to be sure, but it's what's haunting it that makes Ghosts of War chilling and thought-provoking. 

The movie stars Brenton Thwaites, Alan Ritchison, Skylar Astin, Kyle Gallner and Theo Rossi. — Sarabeth Pollock

Goodnight Mommy (2014)

Like action movies, horror is a genre that is generally easy to play across languages. A great example of this in recent years is Goodnight Mommy, an Austrian-based film that creeped audiences out all over the world.

Goodnight Mommy is the story of twin boys who think there is something different about their mother, who recently had face-changing cosmetic surgery.

The film found love among critics (not an easy feat for horror films usually), making numerous year-end best foreign language film lists. 

An English-language version of the movie came out in 2022 and is available on Prime Video, but the original still appears to be the preferred version. — Michael Balderston

Hellraiser (1987) 

One of the iconic movie monsters of the 1980s, Pinhead was the star of the Hellraiser franchise, which got underway with the original 1987 film.

The story, adapted and directed by Clive Barker from his own novel, takes place after Frank accidentally opens a portal to hell, releasing Pinhead and other demons and trapping Frank in the underworld. To free him, Frank’s brother and sister-in-law must perform sacrifices.

A rebooted Hellraiser is now streaming on Hulu, but check out the original, as well as some of its sequels if you want, on Tubi. — Michael Balderston

The Hills Have Eyes (1977)

Not to be confused with the 2006 remake, which is actually also on Tubi, this is the original version of The Hills Have Eyes from horror legend Wes Craven. The plot is generally the same — family stumbles upon and gets stranded in a deserted area not open to the public and soon terrorized by violent savages that live in the hills.

This is early Wes Craven (only his third film). While he’s best known for Nightmare on Elm Street and the original Scream, the 1977 The Hills Have Eyes just shows how much of Craven’s work has been either remade or influential for modern horror. — Michael Balderston

The Last House on the Left (1971)

Even by today’s standards, the torture horror classic The Last House On The Left is extreme. When it was made in 1972, many theaters wouldn’t show it because of the graphic violence. Dozens of horror creators and directors, including Rob Zombie, have cited this film as one of their influences.

The Last House On The Left is the story of Mari Collingwood, who is abducted on her way home from a concert by three murderous men who have escaped from prison. She is tortured, raped and killed.

The men, running from the police, end up posing as traveling salesmen to gain sanctuary in a couple’s home. The couple are Mari’s parents, who overhear the men talking and reveal they killed Mari. They decide they’re going to take revenge for their daughter’s cruel death.

Even for devout horror fans this one can be tough to watch, but it’s a classic horror film for a reason and every true horror fan should watch this one at least once.  — Sonya Iryna

Martyrs (2008)

Martyrs is not for the weak of heart, or of stomach. It’s torture horror with some psychological horror mixed in. But this movie is dark enough to scare even hard core horror fans. 

The story follows a girl who was tortured as a child by a religious cult. The cultists believe that torturing people to a state near death will put them in a sort of ecstatic state where they will be able to understand the true nature of religious mysteries. 

She manages to escape, but comes back as an adult with a friend who was also tortured, to get revenge on the cult members. — Sonya Iryna 

Repo! The Genetic Opera (2008) 

If Rocky Horror didn’t have enough gore for you but you love the general premise of a horror musical that you can sing and dance along with, then Repo! The Genetic Opera is something you should watch. 

The absurdist horror is a backdrop for a series of songs that are very catchy and upbeat. In no time you’ll find yourself wanting to cosplay and sing along. In fact, people still do. Just like Rocky Horror this film has a strong cult following and some theaters do midnight showings where costumed people show up to perform along with the film.

Suspiria (1977) 

Italian director Dario Argento brought the scares in Suspiria, which focuses on a young American dancer who comes to a world renowned dance academy. She quickly discovers, however, that there is something sinister behind the curtains at the school.

Call Me By Your Name director Luca Guadagnino crafted a remake of Suspiria just a fews ago, attempting to dig deeper into the story, running about an hour longer than the original. But Argento’s Suspiria masterfully packs a haunting tone and thrilling climax in just about 90 minutes. — Michael Balderston

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre has been a horror story done over multiple times through the years. But as is the case in many of these situations, it’s just hard to top the original.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre sees five young friends traveling across Texas who end up being pursued by a group of cannibals, including the chainsaw wielding Leatherface. 

The big screen debut of Leatherface was based loosely on serial killer Ed Gein. — Michael Balderston

Train to Busan (2016) 

South Korean filmmakers have been putting their mark on the horror franchise in recent years. This includes Train to Busan, a zombie film from director Sang-ho Yeon, where passengers on a train traveling from Seoul to Busan are forced to fight for their lives as a zombie virus breaks out.

Train to Busan was able to have both critical success — it played at the Cannes International Film Festival and has a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes — and a hit among fans, be it right away in its home country of South Korea or with an ardent cult following in the US and other places around the world. — Michael Balderston

Tubi launched over a decade ago and's grown quickly in that time, expanding from the US to plenty of other countries, and moving from solely offering third-party content to creating its own originals too.

Like rival free streamers Plex, Pluto and The Roku Channel, Tubi is a tempting option for streamers purely by virtue of the fact that you don't need to pay to use it. It's totally free!

Instead, content is supported by commercials, but you won't see any more than on the ad-supported tiers of Netflix, Disney Plus or Paramount Plus.

Tubi TV is available on just about every major platform you could ever want to watch it on. That includes the most prevalent — Roku and Roku TV, as well as Amazon Fire TV.

You're also able to watch Tubi on Android and iOS devices, Apple TV (fourth generation and up), NVIDIA Shield, PlayStation 4 and PS5, Xbox One, Series S and Series X, Amazon Echo Show, Google Nest Hub, Cox Contour set-top boxes, and sat TVs from Vizio, Hisense, Sony, and Samsung.

Do you need an account to watch Tubi?

You can create an account via the Tubi website or app, but you don't need to if you don't want to, as anyone can watch content whether or not they're signed in.

Creating an account gives you extra options though. It'll let you save your place in a show or movie between devices and create watchlists of shows and movies you want to watch in the future.

What's on Tubi — what movies and shows can you stream?

What kind of content does Tubi have?

Tubi has free movies and shows from a host of studios, with new content coming in all the time. These are largely indie or B-movies but you can always find a smattering of older movies and even recent ones with big-name actors.

Tubi also serves up a number of curated collections as another way to sift through the content. That includes things like Award Winners and Nominees, Black Cinema, Bollywood Dreams, Cult Classics, Good Eats (as in food, not the Alton Brown show), Get Fit, Ganadores y Nominados (Spanish award winners and nominees), Not on Netflix and more.

Then there are the usual sort of genres, like Comedy, Action, Foreign films, LGBTQ, Science Fiction and so on. Tubi adds new movies and shows every month, so you'll definitely want to check out their "Recently added" section.

In some regions, Tubi offers live streaming content through constantly-live channels. Channels you may recognize from traditional television include A&E, BabyFirst TV, Complex Networks, CONtv, Docurama, Dove Channel, FilmRise Classic TV, Fox, Full Moon Features, Lifetime, Shout! Factory TV, So ... Real, and more.

Tubi Originals

In the last few years, Tubi has begun making its own productions, called Tubi Originals, which are available to watch for free.

These are largely hlow-budget horror movies and true crime or paranormal documentaries, with TMZ and Vice producing shows for the latter.

It's really been stepping up production recently with multiple original movies each month.

What sports are on Tubi?

The free sports on Tubi are very region-specific, but there are some.

In the US, for example, Tubi shows live matches from several sports leagues like the UEFA Nations League, CONCACAF and the NBA G_League. It also has a few live sports channels which air select sports from loads of other companies.

In Latin America, lots of live soccer is shown from Premier League and CONCACAF.

Tubi also sometimes airs matches after they air, for example it uploaded FIFA World Cup 2022 matches half an hour after they aired.

Watching a movie on demand doesn’t always have to involve spending cash. Tubi is adding a ton of new library titles in September, and every single one of them is ad-supported and free, free, free to watch.

In September the service is adding favorites such as Die Hard and Die Hard 2, The Last of the Mohicans, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, and Four Weddings and a Funeral as well as a handful of fun Kids & Family titles such as Daddy Day Care, Shrek Forever After, and Tales of a Fifth Grade Robin Hood.

In the crowded streaming marketplace, ad-supported free streaming services have been getting more and more popular to let viewers watch movies and TV shows without paying. But which viewers currently have access to Tubi?

Tubi is a free streaming service owned by Fox, which bought it in 2020. The Fox Corporation is separate from 21st Century Fox (now owned by Disney), making Tubi Fox's horse in the streaming races.

When it first launched, Tubi was only available in a select number of countries, but over time that list has been slowly growing. Here's a list of all the countries where you'll be able to watch Tubi:

Tubi offers viewers more than 20,000 movies and TV shows from different Hollywood studios, and has been working to expand its offerings since the Fox acquisition. This has included signing an exclusive content deal with Drafthouse Films; entering content deals with Anime studio Shout! Factory and Kevin Hart’s Laugh Out Loud.

“At Fox Entertainment, we’re engaging every part of the company, including FOX Alternative Entertainment and Bento Box, to develop original titles for Tubi,” said Charlie Collier, CEO, FOX Entertainment. “Working together as one, we are combining all of our skills and talents with Tubi’s data-driven technology, to produce original content that speaks directly to Tubi’s passionate streaming audience.”

Tubi — the free and ad-supported streaming service from Fox with thousands of movies and series at the ready — is showing all three Divergent films through May 30. That's the original Divergent from 2014, Insurgent (2015), and the straight-to-video (which really doesn't mean what it used to) Allegiant from 2016.

Based on the novels by Veronica Roth, the series tells the story of reluctant hero Triss (Shailene Woodley), whose mere existence threatens the class structure of a post-apocalyptic Chicago.

The three movies shared a surprisingly strong cast, including Kate Winslet, Jai Courtney, Ashley Judd, Miles Teller, Zoë Kravitz, Tony Goldwyn, Ansel Elgort, Maggie Q and Mekhi Phifer, Daniel Dae Kim, Octavia Spencer, Jeff Daniels, Naomi Watts, Tho Games, and Bill Skarsgård. 

And while the latter two films aren't considered to be as strong as the first, they trilogy still grossed more than $765 million worldwide.

Tubi along with Drafthouse Films and Giant Pictures today announced that they've teamed up to bring nearly 40 Drafthouse titles to the free, advertising-supported streaming service. 

The additions join more than 30,000 movies and TV shows from more than 250 content partners, including every major studio.

Tubi — one of the best ways to watch free movies and shows online — today announced 42 new TV shows and movies that are coming to the service starting March 15.

The content runs the gamut across time, space and genres. You'll get the two seasons of the 1978 version of Battlestar Galactica, as well as the first seasons of the 2004 Battlestar Galactica reboot from SYFY. (And for more sci-fi fun, Season 1 of 1979's Buck Rogers is headed to Tubi, too.)

Tubi — a free streaming service from Fox Entertainment — today announced a deal that greatly expands its animation category with a licensing agreement with Toei Amination. The Japanese anime house is bringing nearly 500 episodes and six TV specials from the One Piece franchise to Tubi — one of the best ways to stream free movies and shows online.

The deal brings 3D2Y, Episode of Sabo, Adventure of Nebulandia, Heart of Gold, Episode of East Blue and Episode of Skypiea from the One Piece franchise to Tubi, along with the classic anime series Toriko, Saint Seiya: Saintia Sho, Saint Seiya: Hades, Ge-Ge-Ge No Kitaro, Slam Dunk, and Dr. Slump. This will be the first time Dr. Slump and Saint Seiya: Saintia Sho are available with English subtitles.

Today, Tubi, a division of FOX Entertainment, announced the debut for its action thriller, Lazarus. The feature-length film will debut exclusively on Tubi on February 26. Lazarus comes from R.L. Scott and stars Sean Riggs, Costas Mandylor, Aerial Miranda, Shane Brolly, Nicki Micheaux, Noel Gugliemi, Linc Hand, Adamo Palladino, and R&B superstar Mya. The debut date is for both the U.S. and Canada.

R.L. Scott is an indie filmmaker, born in America but was raised in Bahai, Brazil. He has produced seven features and several shorts. He began his filmmaker journey at the age of 15, writing, directing, shooting, and even choreographing action scenes. With his newest project, Lazarus, he hopes to deliver a powerful superhero story in a day and age where that’s mainly been a space reserved for notable names. The film was produced by R.L. Scott and Justin “Jtrx” Echols; and executive produced by Sean Riggs, Eddie Riggs, and Edward Davie.

R.L. Scott both wrote and directed Lazarus. It features a diverse and talented cast in an otherwordly Los Angeles setting. The film centers around a man named Riggs who is killed, but his death is a brief affair. Upon regaining consciousness, he discovers he has been gifted with extraordinary powers that allow him to fight the organization responsible for plunging his city into darkness. 

Lazarus joins Tubi’s massive global library of over 30,000 movies and television shows. Tubi recently announced record Monthly Active Users reached 33 million in August, an increase of 65% year-over-year. Over 30 seasons and nearly 400 episodes will stream on Tubi by the end of July, absolutely free.

It's also another opportunity for Roku to serve up ads to its customers. And make no mistake — Roku is an advertising company.

But our main concern here is for the end-user. The customer. What do we get from The Roku Channel? We get movies. A lot of movies. Some are newer than others. Some are better than others. And the number of ads you see will vary a bit.

We also get news. As in legitimate, real news from sources like USA Today, ABC News, Yahoo and Cheddar.

There's also sports, from Stadium, Outside TV, beIN Sports Xtra, and Fubo Sports Network, among others.

And there are plenty of traditional TV shows, from the likes of Pluto TV, which includes a wealth of channels you know like BET, MTV, Comedy Central and more — including a wealth of content for children.

And the real kicker here? You don't actually have to own a Roku device to take advantage. Just head to therokuchannel.roku.com and get your stream on.

Sling Free

Sling TV also is enticing prospective customers with free content. And it's ramped things up even more now that everyone's stuck at home, with its "STAY IN & SLING!" Initiative. (Because what we all need in trying times is more exclamation points!)

In addition to having access to ABC News Live, Fox News and 18 local fox affiliates, there also are a number of series up for free viewing via distribution service Filmrise. And, of course, there will be ads.

A few of the series we see right off the bat include Hell's Kitchen , Forensic Files , Kitchen Nightmares , Black Sails , 3rd Rock From The Sun , Rosanne , Grounded For Life , Crimes of Passion , Hunter , Grace Under Fire , Shameless , and the original 21 Jumpstreet .

All this free slinging is available on any device that already has Sling TV, as well as at watch.sling.com without a Sling account.

Pluto.tv

Pluto TV once was a promising young ad-supported TV service, racking up subscribers by having a surprisingly decent stable of channels — some familiar, and some borrowed from content farms more used to seeing their work on YouTube and Facebook.

Today? Pluto TV is very much all of that — only it's now owned by CBSViacom, which purchased it (OK, Viacom purchased it before recombining with CBS) back in 2019 for $340 million in cash.

The important part, though, is that Pluto has more than 200 channels at your disposal. We're talking movies of all stripes. (And a full-blown James Bond movie channel.) We're talking entertainment channels like MTV and Spike and BET and an entire channel dedicated to Baywatch . We're talking news channels like NBC and CNN and CBS and Bloomberg and Cheddar. There's comedy and sports and tech and kids and music and ...

You get the point. And you're literally not allowed to say that there's nothing on so long as Pluto is in existence.

And Pluto is available on most every device on which you would want to watch such a thing, including your web browser.

Tubi.tv

See if you've heard this story before — an ad-supported streaming service does pretty well for itself, with a smattering of channels and content that people actually want to watch. And then it gets purchased for many millions of dollars.

Such is the story of Tubings TV, which just got picked up by Fox for some $440 million in cash.

In any case, Tubi is more about movies and shows and not live TV, which is fine. And you'll definitely find something you want to watch tucked inside there.

It's very much like what you'd expect to find on an airplane somewhere if it didn't have access to the more recent movies and shows. Something to pass the time, for sure.

And you can't beat the price.

IMDB TV

Fun fact: IMDB is now owned by Amazon — which is why you'll very quickly see it point you toward Amazon Prime Video. But it's also where you'll find IMDB TV, which is another way to watch more recent movies for free. (So long as you can put up with advertising, of course.)

There are a few caveats here. First is that you have to be in the United States and its territories. Second is that you'll be going through either the IMDB webpage, Amazon Prime Video app, or through an Amazon Fire TV device.

But after that? You've got access to all kinds of quality movies — as in, better and more recent than you'll find on many of the other services we've listed here.

There's no way to not see ads here, and you can't purchase or download. But what you do get is good content, for the best price possible.

And still on the way — Peacock

One more free(ish) streaming service that's not quite here yet is NBCUniversal's "Peacock." (You know, Peacock because of the iconic NBC logo.)

Peacock isn't scheduled to be available until April 15 for Comcast Xfinity X1 and Flex customers, and June 15 for the rest of the public. And it'll launch with three tiers: A $5-a-month option for the general public that includes ads, and a $10-a-month ad-free plan. And if you're a current Comcast subscriber, you'll get an ad-supported version of Peacock for free.

Ideally, NBCUniversal would move up the launch and open up the free tier to anyone who wants it, even if it was for a limited time as a sort of extended trial in the time of coronavirus, then convert a good number of those trials into paying subscriptions. But so far, it's status quo.

Over-the-air TV with an antenna

One more tried and true method for proper free TV — an over-the-air antenna. For the one time cost of the antenna itself — plus the time it takes to install it (which shouldn't be much at all) — you get access to all kinds of broadcast content. Your local affiliates — things like ABC and CBS and Fox and NBC — and their secondary counterparts. That's news. That's daytime shows. That's primetime.

The only thing it doesn't have is sports, because, well, yeah.

But the process is super simple. Get an antenna and install it. Outside and higher is better, but indoors may work, too. It really all depends on where you live and where your affiliates are located. Then plug the antenna into your TV, or into a streaming tuner box like HDHomerun or Tablo or a Fire TV Recast .

And then, just watch.

Tubi — a free (but ad-supported) movie and TV distribution service with more than 15,000 titles available — today announced that it's available on on Vizio TVs running its SmartCast operating system. That means it'll be baked in as an option, even if you don't have any other streaming devices connected to the set.

Tubi also is available on Android and iOS devices, Roku, Apple TV, Chromecast, Android TV, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Amazon Fire TV devices, among others.
