The horror genre has truly become a director’s showcase. Robert Eggers (The Witch, Nosferatu), Osgood Perkins (Longlegs, The Monkey), Ari Aster (Hereditary, Midsommar), Jordan Peele (Get Out, Us) and Zach Cregger, whose 2022 horror movie Barbarian put him on the map. Cregger has returned with his follow-up to Barbarian, Weapons, an eerie and entertaining addition to the horror canon.

In addition to directing, Cregger wrote the script for Weapons, which tells the story of a town where all but one student in an elementary school class mysteriously disappear one night. Suspicions are immediately raised around their teacher, Justine (Julia Garner), as parents, including Archer (Josh Brolin), desperately search for answers. Alden Ehrenreich, Benedict Wong, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher and Amy Madigan also star.

Weapons is completely defined by Cregger’s storytelling and direction, as it overshadows just about everything else, including the performances of his notable cast (with one exception).

Let’s start with the story. Cregger plays around with structure, telling the story in chapters that focus primarily on specific characters, with some overlap or bleeding into one another. This slowly reveals the secrets of the movie, doling out answers and key info bit by bit until the third act and the whole picture comes into view. It’s similar to his jump cuts in Barbarian, but here it is more about slowly stringing the audience along. While it definitely is a slow burn, this strategy works to keep the audience actively engaged.

Supporting that is Cregger’s directing style, particularly his mastery of creating tone. For all two hours of the movie there is an undeniable sense of dread hovering over everything. But Cregger doesn’t achieve that with overt stylistic choices (outside of a couple of dream sequences), it’s his tracking of characters, lingering on certain things, letting his scariest moments play out slowly rather than with jump scares and the blending darker elements with touches of humor that give the movie its unique sensibility.

Having said that, I do have a couple of small gripes. One that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense is that characters are affected by something at different parts of the movie but we never get an effective answer as to how or why that happens; the movie’s big reveals don’t give a satisfying answer to this.

Also, the movie’s message isn’t particularly clear, at least on first viewing. When I watched Barbarian I could quickly get what Cregger was going for with his story, as well as simply being entertained by what’s unfolding on screen. With Weapons, the story itself is interesting, but what exactly I should be taking away from it is muddled at best. Sometimes you don’t need an obvious message, but it can make the difference between a good and great movie; in this case it has me liking Barbarian a little bit better than Weapons.

Julia Garner and Josh Brolin in Weapons (Image credit: Quantrell Colbert/Warner Bros. Pictures)

With Weapons being the Cregger show, it relegates most of his ensemble as mostly forgettable. That’s not to say that Julia Garner or Josh Brolin are bad; their characters are perfectly fine subjects for us to follow as the mystery is unraveled. But we’re not as interested in what’s going on specifically with them as we are with the overall mystery of the story.

The one exception in the cast is Amy Madigan. Best known for her work in the 1980s, particularly in the classic Field of Dreams and her Oscar-nominated role in Twice in a Lifetime, Madigan has her best role in years in Weapons and she makes the most of it, stealing every scene she’s in. The role she has definitely is designed to draw our attention, but what she does with her performance is exceptional.

Weapons is a very good horror movie, but it’s not one just for the horror diehards (I definitely don’t consider myself as such). Because the movie relies more on tone than things like jump scares (though there are a couple snuck in there) it should be more accessible to a broader audience. Basically, if you’re interested in good filmmaking and a story that will keep you fully invested, then Cregger’s Weapons is worth watching.

Weapons releases exclusively in movie theaters in the US, UK and around the world on August 8.

There have been few horror franchises this century as popular and successful as The Conjuring. But all good things come to an end, which is the case with The Conjuring: Last Rites, the 2025 new movie are set to mark the final chapter in this horror series.

Beginning with 2013’s The Conjuring, Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson have starred as real-life paranormal investigators Lorraine and Ed Warren, portraying them in three Conjuring movies and a couple of spin offs (the Annabelle and The Nun horror movies). But The Conjuring: Last Rites is based on one of the final investigations by the Warrens.

Read on for everything that you need to know about The Conjuring: Last Rites.

The Conjuring: Last Rites release date

Playing first exclusively in movie theaters, The Conjuring: Last Rites premieres in the US, UK and elsewhere around the world on September 5.

The Conjuring: Last Rites cast

As mentioned, Farmiga and Wilson return as the Warrens. Farmiga is an Oscar-nominated actress for Up in the Air, who is also known for The Departed. Wilson is also the star of another horror franchise, Insidious, as well as appearing in the Aquaman movies.

Also set to star in The Conjuring: Last Rites are Mia Tomlinson (The Beast Must Die) as Ed and Lorraine’s daughter Judy; Ben Hardy (Love at First Sight) as Judy’s boyfriend, Tony Spera; and Steve Coulter (Oppenheimer), who returns as Father Gordon.

Others in the cast include Rebecca Calder (House of the Dragon), Elliot Cowan (Suspect: The Shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes), Kíla Lord Cassidy (The Wonder), Beau Gadsdon (A Gentleman in Moscow), John Brotherton (Fuller House) and Shannon Kook (Reacher).

The Conjuring: Last Rites plot

Warner Bros. has not shared many details on the plot aside from this description:

“The Conjuring: Last Rites delivers another thrilling chapter of the iconic Conjuring cinematic universe, based on real events. Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson reunite for one last case as renowned, real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren in a powerful and spine-chilling addition to the global box office-breaking franchise.”

However, from what we see in the trailer we can infer that this movie is based on the Smurl family case, which took place in 1986 and followed a family that believed their house was possessed by demons.
The horror genre has been a great launching pad for directors, and that was the case for Zach Cregger, who made waves with his 2022 movie Barbarian. Now the filmmaker is back with his anticipated 2025 new movie, Weapons.

Of course, Cregger and studio Warner Bros. Pictures are keeping details about this movie — described as a horror, mystery, thriller — under wraps for the time being. But we have amassed what we can find about Weapons for anyone interested right here.

Read on below to get all the information you need about Weapons — when it’s coming out, who’s in it and more.

Weapons release date

Weapons releases exclusively in movie theaters on August 8 in the US, UK and elsewhere around the world.

Weapons cast

We don’t have any details on what characters the stars of Weapons are playing, but here is who is slated to be in the movie:

Josh Brolin (Dune: Part Two, Avengers: Endgame)

Julia Garner (The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Ozark)

Alden Ehrenreich (Cocaine Bear, Fair Play)

Austin Abrams (Wolfs, Euphoria)

Cary Christopher (An Almost Christmas Story, Days of Our Lives)

Benedict Wong (3 Body Problem, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness)

Amy Madigan (Antlers, Field of Dreams)

Weapons plot

Cregger, in addition to directing, wrote the original screenplay for Weapons.
Much like its characters, the Final Destination franchise has cheated death, as Final Destination Bloodlines marks a resurrection of the horror series. But fans can gleefully expect some gruesomely entertaining deaths with the 2025 new movie.

For those perhaps uninitiated with the Final Destination movies, the main idea is that the characters at the center of each movie are able to escape their deaths when someone has a premonition. However, the miraculous survivals put them in even more peril as death seeks to balance the scales and take back their new leases on life, often in crazy, unlikely and violent ways.

Let’s dive into everything you need to know about the latest entry in the franchise, Final Destination Bloodlines.

Final Destination Bloodlines how to watch

Final Destination Bloodlines is now available to stream on HBO Max in the US, as well as rent via digital on-demand in the US, UK and elsewhere.

Here's everything to know about how to watch Final Destination Bloodlines.

Final Destination Bloodlines cast

Kaitlyn Santa Juana in Final Destination Bloodlines (Image credit: Courtesy of Warner Bros.)

Since these movies see a lot of characters die, unsurprisingly Final Destination Bloodlines has a mostly new cast.
The Zone of Interest is a modern masterpiece, albeit a harrowing one. Now, just months after the movie premiered in theaters worldwide and won multiple Oscars and critical praise, a new documentary that can serve as a companion piece is set to get a special release in movie theaters, The Commandant's Shadow, on May 29 and 30.

The story of The Zone of Interest was based on the true story of the Höss family, whose patriarch Rudlof Höss was the commandant of the Auschwitz concentration camp and one of the architects of the genocide of Jewish people during World War Two. The key component of the movie is that Höss and his family lived a seemingly idyllic life just on the other side of the camp's walls, where the horrors of the Holocaust were occuring.

The Commandant's Shadow primarily takes place eight decades later and follows the 87-year-old son of Höss, Hans Jurgen Höss, as he prepares to meet a Holocaust survivor who was a prisoner at Auschwitz, Anita Lasker-Wallfisch. The description of the movie says that this is the first time the descendant of a major war criminal meets a survivor in a private setting (Anita’s home).

The documentary is a collaboration between Warner Bros. Pictures and HBO Documentary Films, directed by Daniela Völker. The movie is playing in movie theaters with the help of Fathom Events. Tickets are available to purchase through the Fathom website. Again, it will only be playing in movie theaters for two days, May 29 and 30, but with the Warner Bros. and HBO affiliation, it will likely become available to stream on Max, though a streaming premiere date is TBD.

Directed by Jonathan Glazer, The Zone of Interest won two Oscars, one for Best International Film and the other for Best Sound, while it was also nominated for Best Picture and Best Director. WTW gave the movie five stars in our The Zone of Interest review and named it as one of our 10 best movies of 2023. You can watch The Zone of Interest on Max right now, or rent via digital on-demand if you do not have access to the streaming service.

See a preview of what the documentary will cover by watching The Commandant's Shadow trailer directly below:

The hype, as they say, has been huge. But one of the most anticipated new movies of the year is here, and we all know the name of the other one. As a double bill, Barbie and Oppenheimer make an odd pairing — except for one thing. They both represent a high watermark for Greta Gerwig and Christopher Nolan, directors with already formidable track records.

There the similarity pretty much ends, with Gerwig using the iconic doll as the main weapon in her colorful, lively comedy/satire, one that has feminism and corporate culture in its sights. All high heels, immaculate makeup, and bouffant hair, Stereotypical Barbie (Margot Robbie) — there are currently 176 variations — has an idyllic life in Barbieland.

Every day is perfect — sublime, even — spent with all the other Barbies at parties and having fun on the beach. She's also the object of Ken’s (Ryan Gosling) affection, but he doesn’t stand much of a chance: not only is she impervious to his advances, but he’s competing against a whole lot of other Kens.

Things start to change for Barbie when she develops strange, unfamiliar feelings and has to travel to the real world to put them right, with Ken hitching a ride on the back seat of her suitably pink car. The ups and downs of living with actual people have radically different effects on them, and cracks show in everything Barbie holds dear.

Barbie's perfect world is shattered. (Image credit: Warner Bros)

Starting and ending on a high — an outstanding parody of the opening sequence of 2001: A Space Odyssey and Barbie arriving for an appointment with a doctor who tends to specialize in female conditions — the film is unapologetic and unafraid in its savvy observations about both women and men. Nor does is it short on reminders that the characters in Barbieland are all dolls, missing some attributes that real people would regard as essential.

Although it doesn’t hit all its many targets every single time, its aim is usually true, sharp and frequently funny. Even though she trips herself up occasionally, Gerwig is still a supremely confident pair of hands, relishing the challenge of taking a universal brand and creating something fresh and original from it. With so many franchise movies looking tired and frayed around the edges, she has the imagination to show there’s still life in the idea, as long as you are creative enough. And she most certainly is.

Just a couple of Kens. (Image credit: Warner Bros)

Thankfully, this is no corporate ad in the same way as the deplorable Space Jam 2: A New Legacy. The Mattel branding is there, for sure, but it isn’t rammed down our throats and, ironically, the weakest sequences in the movie involve the company’s board: as its CEO, Will Ferrell just about manages to carry off the scenes, but he and his crew are instantly forgettable. Literally out of sight, out of mind. But the film overflows with energy, as well as a sense of both fun and the ridiculous.

Robbie is perfectly cast as Barbie — as Helen Mirren’s bone-dry narrator is at pains to point out — but it’s Gosling’s vacuous Ken who steals the show: wide-eyed, nice but dim, and well out in front when it comes to the laughs. His vulnerability is equally strong so, despite the 2-D Barbieland set and characters to match, he feels much closer to 3-D than any of the others. And with sparkling comedy turns from Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, and a blink-and-you’ll-miss-him cameo from Rob Brydon, it adds up to a boisterously hilarious piece of, dare we say it, Kentertainment.

The expectations have been massive, which isn’t unusual this year, but for once they’re justified. This is 2023’s summer movie. Barbie isn’t perfect, but it is fizzy, smart and, most importantly, inventive. She may have been launched in 1959, but there’s no sign of the iconic doll putting up her stilettoed feet when retirement age arrives next year. In fact, given the film’s likely popularity, she could be busier than ever — and that goes for all of those variations.

Barbie hits theaters on July 21, 2023.

Movie theater owners got their first look at Don't Worry Darling at CinemaCon 2022, and it sounds like Florence Pugh (Midsommar, Black Widow) and Harry Styles (Dunkirk, My Policeman) will be getting hot and heavy in director Olivia Wilde's latest flick!

Although the trailer for Wilde's upcoming psychological thriller hasn't been released to the public, Variety reported what the footage contained. The film is set in the 1950s and sees Styles and Pugh playing a young married couple who live out in the Californian desert.

Pugh's character is a happy housewife, but she gradually grows suspicious that the company her husband works for could be harboring some deep secrets.

The footage opened with the pair snuggled up together in bed but starts to unravel from there. Pugh questions whether her husband has really investigated what the mysterious "Victory Project" he's working on really is; the more she questions Styles' work, the more people begin to mistrust her.

Elsewhere, the trailer showed the couple getting intimate in and around the house; one scene in particular even saw the pair together, right in front of Chris Pine's character!

The sneak preview was part of the Warner Bros. presentation. During the event, director Olivia Wilde also shared some of the ideas behind Don't Worry Darling.

She claimed the movie was "a love letter to movies that push the boundaries of our imagination" and told the crowd: "I want you to imagine a life where you have everything you could want.

"Not just material, tangible things... like a beautiful house, perfect weather and gorgeous cars. But also the things that really matter, like true love or the perfect partner or real trusted friendships and a purpose that feels meaningful", she added.

"What would it take for you to give up that life, that perfect life. What are you really willing to sacrifice to do what's right? Are you willing to dismantle the system that's designed to serve you? That's the big question at the center of Don't Worry Darling", Wilde teased.

She then went on to heap praise on her two stars, describing pop star Harry Styles as "nothing short of a revelation in this part", and Florence Pugh as "brilliant, sexy, fierce and tough".

Don't Worry Darling is currently scheduled for a theatrical release on September 23, 2022.
Before the MCU, Batman was the biggest superhero franchise on the big screen, and even as Warner Bros. has had to start and stop a few times since Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy wrapped up, excitement for the caped crusader from Gotham is always high among fans. That is certainly the case for his latest adaptation, The Batman.

A whole new interpretation on the character from Ben Affleck’s Batman that fans got in Batman v Superman and The Justice League, Matt Reeves wrote (along with Peter Craig) and is directing The Batman.

With that said, here is everything that we know about The Batman, one of the biggest movies in 2022 ...

How to watch The Batman

The Batman released exclusively in movie theaters on March 4, where it is still playing. So, anyone still needing to go watch The Batman, or who wants to watch it again, will need to make their way to movie theaters.

However, WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar has already confirmed in an interview with Vox that The Batman would debut on HBO Max on April 19.

For more information, see our how to watch The Batman story.

The Batman reviews

Reviews are in for The Batman. What to Watch's review of the movie called in a dark, nihilistic crime epic, particularly braving director Matt Reeves' blockbuster filmmaking and the chemistry between Robert Pattison's Bat and Zoë Kravitz's Catwoman.

Currently, The Batman has a score of 85% on Rotten Tomatoes and has been deemed "Certified Fresh." Metacritic, another review aggregator site, has the The Batman scoring a quite respectable 72. Many of the reviews say The Batman is the best movie about the caped crusader since The Dark Knight.

It will be interesting to see where Robert Pattison eventually falls in our best Batman actors piece.

Who is in The Batman cast?

Adam West, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Christian Bale and Ben Affleck have all donned the cowl to take on the role of Batman. The latest actor to portray Bruce Wayne/Batman in the Matt Reeves-directed film will be none other than Robert Pattinson.

Pattison is most widely known for his breakout role in the Twilight franchise. But after being a teen heartthrob, the actor has been making some really interesting choices starring in movies like The Rover, Maps to the Stars, The Lost City of Z, Good Time, High Life and The Lighthouse. He made his big-budget comeback in Christopher Nolan’s Tenet and is now once again taking on the lead role in a potential franchise with The Batman.

Of course it wouldn’t be a Batman movie without Bruce Wayne’s trusted butler/advisor. In The Batman, Andy Serkis will be playing Alfred. This will be a reunion for Serkis and Reeves, who had previously worked together on the recent Planet of the Apes movies. To my knowledge, Serkis will not be using mo-cap to play Alfred — but hey, who knows.

Also on Batman’s side will be Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, the Gotham City commissioner most recently played by J.K. Simmons and Gary Oldman. Peter Sarsgaard is slated to play District Attorney Gil Colson.

He may need all the help he can get, as there are multiple infamous Batman villains set to appear in The Batman. Among them are The Riddler, played by Paul Dano; The Penguin, played by Colin Farrell; Catwoman, played by Zoë Kravitz (though she's more like a tenuous ally); and Carmine Falcone, played by John Tuturro. Barry Keoghan also appears in as an unnamed Arkham prisoner who fans may quickly recognize.

Will soon be seeing more of one of these characters beyond The Batman. A Penguin spinoff show has bee ordered at HBO Max.

The Batman deleted scene

Even though it's just a couple of weeks after the movie released in theaters, a deleted scene from The Batman has already made its way onto the internet, and it is sure to get fans buzzing.

The scene shows Robert Pattinson's Batman and Barry Keoghan's Arkham prisoner (who director Matt Reeves has confirmed is the Joker, even if he's not specifically called that). After getting his start in TV, Reeves made his feature film directorial debut with the found footage monster flick Cloverfield. He then directed the horror remake, Let Me In.

But his biggest movies thus far have been Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War for the Planet of the Apes, the critically-acclaimed sequels to Andy Serkis’ rebooted Planet of the Apes franchise that were made in the 2010s.

Reeves still has a toe in the TV waters as well, creating a writing the pilot episode for NBC’s drama, Ordinary Joe, though the show was recently cancelled.

In addition to directing The Batman, Reeves also wrote the script and is producing the film.

The Batman trailer

DC Fandome was filled with plenty of new and exclusive content, but one of the most anticipated unveils during the event was the release of the brand new trailer for The Batman. It's been more than a year since the first trailer debuted online, and this new look offers an even better look at the newest movie featuring the caped crusader.

Fans get their best look yet at Paul Dano's The Riddler, a complicated relationship with Zoë Kravitz's Catwoman and a fun chase scene with Colin Farrell's The Penguin. Plus plenty of clips of Robert Pattinson's Batman fighting off some goons. Now that they are officially moving on from the Snyderverse (despite fans’ protests), it appears that the plan is for DC characters to stand on their own, with any potential crossovers coming through another common trick the MCU is now also employing — the multiverse (though that might not be what DC ends up calling it).

We know this because the upcoming The Flash movie will be the first real dip into this new look strategy. Ezra Miller is reprising his role as The Flash from Zack Snyder’s Justice League, and in it he will be teaming up with Batman, multiple Batmen; Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton have both been confirmed as starring in The Flash. As far as we know, Robert Pattinson’s iteration of the character is not confirmed for The Flash, but many speculate that it will at the very least confirm that all the films are in some way connected to DC’s Extended Universe.

Aquaman and the Flash won’t be saving the world in 2022 after all, as Warner Bros. has announced date shifts for many of its upcoming movies based on DC superheroes. The Shazam sequel was the one movie to get moved up in the release calendar.

First up is Black Adam, the superhero movie starring Dwayne Johnson. Originally set to be released on July 29, Black Adam is being pushed to an October 21 release date. Meanwhile The Flash, Ezra Miller’s first solo outing as the speedster that will also feature Michael Keaton’s Batman, is no longer going to debut on November 4 and instead will speed to a June 23, 2023, release date.

Amid all of this shuffling, Shazam! Fury of the Gods starring Zachary Levi was the lone DC superhero movie to be pushed up, from a June 2, 2023, date to December 12 of this year.

It wasn’t all DC superhero news however, as Warner Bros. shared some release date info on a pair of other movies. First, Wonka, a new movie starring Timothée Chalamet as Roald Dahl’s famous chocolatier, was pushed back from a previously reported release date of Mach 17, 2023, to December 15, 2023. The other bit of news was around Meg 2: The Trench starring Jason Statham getting a release date of August 4, 2023.

Check out What to Watch’s new movies 2022 page to keep up with when all of the biggest movies are coming out.

If you watched Dune this past weekend and were either confused why the title card called it Dune Part One or felt like it ended without a natural conclusion, well that was because director Denis Villeneuve had always intended to break author Frank Herbert’s epic sci-fi tome into two parts. That plan will now be seen through, as Warner Bros. and Legendary have given the green light to a Dune sequel, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Dune is now available to watch both in theaters and on the HBO Max streaming platform. Even with the option to watch it at home, Dune made more than $41 million at the U.S. box office in its opening weekend (Oct. 22-24), per IMDb’s Box Office Mojo; it has made $223 million globally thus far. Reviews were also strong for the film, with What to Watch’s Lucy Buglass declaring Dune an “epic cinematic experience,” while it was Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes (84%) and earned a 74 on Metacritic.

The story of Dune is about Paul Atreides, the only son of the noble House Atreides, which has been chosen to become the overseers of the desert planet Arrakis, where the most valuable resource in the galaxy, known as spice, is mined. However, there are enemies who seek to destroy House Atreides and take control of the spice themselves.

The film stars Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Zendaya, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, Jason Momoa, Stellan Skarsgård, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Chang Chen, Dave Bautista and Charlotte Rampling.

“Legendary is pleased to officially move forward with Dune Part Two … once again based on the amazing books written by Frank Herbert,” Legendary said in a statement. “We would not have gotten to this point without the extraordinary vision of Denis and the amazing work of his talented crew, the writers, our stellar cast, our partners at Warner Bros. and of course the fans! Here’s to more Dune.”

“It was a dream of mine to adapt Frank Herbert’s Dune and I have the fans, the cast and crew, Legendary and Warner Bros. to thank for supporting this dream. This is only the beginning,” Villeneuve added.

The Hollywood Reporter also announced that Dune Part Two is currently planned for October 2023. This would be an exclusive theatrical release, as Warner Bros. previously announced that after 2021 it is not going to be releasing its movies simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max, which should make Villeneuve happy, as he had some harsh words for the decision when it was initially announced.

Dune will be available to stream on HBO Max for the first 31 days of its release, which should leave it on the streaming service until the weekend of Nov. 20-21.

It was a bold move by the bold Jason Kilar, who for has troubles has seen parent company decide to offload WarnerMedia into a new company led by Discovery, and likely Kilar, too.

That's not to say that Kilar was wrong, though. And on AT&T's earnings call this week, Kilar reiterated that there's no way the industry is going back to the way it was in pre-2020.

"I certainly don't anticipate us going back to the way the world was in 2015, or '16, or '17, when windows were quite lengthy between theatrical and home exhibition," Kilar said on the earnings call. He didn't say that we should expect simultaneous theater and streaming releases to continue, but that there will be shorter windows between the two. But while that window will narrow to 45 days, Kilar said it'll be for "a portion of our slate."

And, he continued, "Warner Bros. is also going to be producing over 10 motion pictures that will be on HBO Max on Day 1."

There's a lot we still don't know.

We don't know what those movies are. We don't know if they're high-profile releases, or Warner Bros.' leftovers. We don't know know if the films in question are only coming to HBO Max, or if they'll be available in theaters, too.

That's a lot of hedging and non-specifics, which is the sort of thing you expect from an earnings call.

Meanwhile, HBO Max added some 2.89 million subscribers in the United States in the second quarter of the year, the company reported, giving it a total of 43.518 million domestically. Hopefully we'll see global numbers broken out for Q3, now that HBO Max is live in 39 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. Worldwide, the combined legacy HBO and HBO Max hit some 67.5 million subscribers.

Everything you need to know about HBO Max

The best movies on HBO and HBO Max

The best HBO series

HBO Max review

It’s been just more than 14 years since millions of people’s TVs cut to black and were left to only wonder what had happened to mobster Tony Soprano at the end of the HBO series The Sopranos. While we’re not getting an answer to that question, fans of the show should be excited for The Many Saints of Newark, a prequel that focuses on a young Tony’s entrance into the gangster world that just released its first trailer.

The Many Saints of Newark will also give fans the chance to experience the world of The Sopranos on the big screen with a full theatrical release on Oct. 1, as well as an option for the familiar at-home viewing with a simultaneous, one-month run on HBO Max.

David Chase, the creator of The Sopranos, has penned the screenplay with Lawrence Konner, another veteran of the series. Alan Taylor (Game of Thrones, Thor: The Dark World) is directing.

When you watch the trailer below, if the actor hired to play the young Tony Soprano looks like a dead ringer for James Gandolfini, who memorably portrayed the mob boss in the HBO series, it’s more than just good casting. Portraying the younger Tony is Michael Gandolfini (The Deuce, Cherry), James Gandolfini’s son. The Many Saints of Newark is keeping things in the family.

Joining the young Gandolfini in the film is Alessandro Nivola as Richard “Dickie” Moltisanti, the uncle that introduces Tony to the world crime, Vera Farmgia as Tony’s mother and Billy Magnussen playing popular Sopranos character Paulie “Walnuts” Gualtieri. Other cast members include Leslie Odom Jr., Corey Stoll, Jon Bernthal and Ray Liotta.

Watch the trailer below.

If that got you reminiscing about The Sopranos (and how could you not when the theme music kicks in at the end), you can watch the entire series on HBO Max.

HBO Max has been asserting itself in the streaming market recently thanks to the simultaneous release strategy for 2021 Warner Bros. movies like Godzilla vs. Kong, Mortal Kombat and In the Heights, as well as streaming new hit shows like Mare of Easttown and Hacks.

HBO Max is priced at $14.99 for its premium subscription, while an ad-supported version (though without access to the 2021 Warner Bros. movies) is available for $9.99.

Nostalgia sells these days, but Hugh Jackman has made a unique business out of it in the first full trailer for the movie Reminiscence. Written and directed by Westworld co-creator Lisa Joy, Reminiscence is a sci-fi thriller that certainly looks like a twisty journey, with Rebecca Ferguson and Thandiwe Newton along for the ride.

Reminiscence takes place in a future Miami where sea levels have begun to put parts of the city underwater and violence has broken out. Jackman stars as Nick Bannister, a private investigator of the mind, helping clients access their lost memories. But when a new client (Rebecca Ferguson) begins to trigger memories of his own, Bannister goes on a journey to discover the truth.

In addition to the headlining trio of Jackman, Ferguson and Newton, Reminiscence stars Natalie Martinez, Daniel Wu, Brett Cullen, Angela Sarafyan and Cliff Curtis. The film also marks the feature directing debut for Joy.

Reminiscence looks to be combining big action sequences with a futuristic film noir kind of vibe — with Ferguson as a potential femme fatale that she’s played so well in the Mission: Impossible franchise. This is also the first action role that Jackman has taken on since retiring his adamantium claws as Wolverine, but the 53 year old still looks like he’s got the stuff.

Reminiscence will debut in theaters and on HBO Max on Aug. 20 as part of WarnerMedia’s same-day release strategy. Watch the trailer below.

HBO Max has been reaping the benefits of the same-day release strategy for Warner Bros. movies, with subscriber numbers getting a good boost since it was first announced in the fall of 2020.
The popular DC Comic Hourman is in development by Warner Bros. and DC Films, with Cherin Entertainment joining as producers. The news comes from an exclusive per Deadline. The Hourman film will be the first time Cherin has developed a DC property.

While Cherin Entertainment hasn’t been known for developing comic book properties but they do know success. They relaunch Planet of the Apes, a highly successful trilogy – grossing more than $1.6 billion worldwide and earned praise for groundbreaking effects and motion-capture performances.

The adaption will be penned by writing duo Gavin James and Neil Widener.

Hourman was originally created by Ken Fitch and Benard Baily in 1940. The hero has had three incarnations, with the first one featuring chemist Rex Tyler the first time we meet the character. Tyler would create a new synthesis, “Miraclo,” which grants him super-strength and endurance but only for one hour. Rex’s son Rick Tyler would later become the hero, ultimately becoming the most popular Hourman as the years went on. It’s currently unknown which character will play Hourman in the upcoming film.

DC had mauled over the idea of a Hourman project over the last decade – coming close in 2013 when they began developing a series around Rex Tyler for the CW. Although the series never came to be, the character, Rex Tyler, was featured in Legends of Tomorrow – Tyler served as the leader of the group.

The news of an Hourman film comes just a few weeks after the announcement of another project underway for a popular DC character that isn’t Wonder Woman, Superman, or Batman. Charm City Kings director Angel Manuel Soto has been tapped to helm a Blue Beetle film.

Everything you need to know about HBO Max

The best movies on HBO and HBO Max

The best HBO series

HBO Max review

The official Red Band trailer for Mortal Kombat leaked ahead of the official trailer released today. Yesterday, a series of motion posters for the upcoming movie were released. They feature favorites Mileena, Jax, Kung Lao, and more. The short videos, originally released on Twitter, give a closer look at who’s playing who in the latest adaptation of the iconic video game series. Mortal Kombat is currently set to debut on HBO Max and in theaters on April 16, 2021.

Each poster showcases the movie’s cast of fighters, including Joe Taslim's Sub-Zero, Josh Lawson's Kano, Sisi Stringer's Mileena, Max Huang's Kung Lao, Chin Han's Shang Tsung, Jessica McNamee's Sonya Blade, Ludi Lin's Liu Kang, Tadanobu Asano's Raiden, Mehcad Brooks' Jax Briggs, and Hiroyuki Sanada's Scorpion. Some of them are featured in the red band trailer, including an all-new character Cole Young - played by Lewis Tan. He is described as a washed-up MMA fighter who bears a mysterious birthmark in the shape of the Mortal Kombat symbol on his chest.

Cole Young and long-time character, Sonya Blade, will embark on a journey together that will lead him to the temple of our favorite Elder God with the thunder and hat to match, Lord Raiden. From there Young will come into contact with a group of highly-skilled fighters, which means there will be plenty of fights and gruesome fatalities since the movie is rated R. We are thankful for that too! We would like all of the classic but extremely violent finisher moves. We get a taste of that in the trailer.

Lewis Tan, who did his own stunt work on set, had the following to say:

"There are some crazy fatalities...We've picked a couple of iconic ones. There's a lot of really cool signature moves that you'll see, a lot of Easter eggs that we snuck into the film, but there are some really badass fatalities that I can't wait to see on the big screen. They're brutal, man. They, they don't hold back."

The new James Wan-produced live-action Mortal Kombat is just one of a slew of titles Warner Bros. is expected to release on HBO Max. Mortal Kombat’s distribution plan was reconsidered due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, which has impacted several studios and their respective release calendars over the past year.

Joe Taslim is Sub-Zero. #MortalKombatMovie trailer Thursday. pic.twitter.com/63Rv7KwahsFebruary 17, 2021

Warner Bros. has decided to push back the release date for Godzilla vs. Kong, and now we have to wait a few more days. The king of lizards and the high flying ape are now set to face off on March 31st, instead of the original date of March 26th. The movie will still be available to stream on HBO Max and available in theaters at the same time. The film will still launch internationally on March 26th in territories where HBO Max is not available—so watch out for spoilers!

Maybe we’re a little dramatic because it’s only a few days’ worths of difference. However, after the trailer release this past Sunday, the anticipation for this movie skyrocketed. The trailer was one of the most epic things we’ve seen so far this year. Not to mention the sheer turmoil of having to watch our faves fight each other. We’re still blaming all of humanity for this, and we just know they did something they had no business doing—a running theme in this franchise.

If we look at this with the glass half full, the extra days give us time to prepare ourselves for the battle of the ages. There is more time for either Godzilla or Kong fans to win people over to their side when it comes to winning between them. Or you could make your way over to the team “let them be friends’, plenty of snacks and beverages to go around there.

Warner Bros. has not stated why the small delay, but with some luck, it will be the only delay. Once again, the trailer for Godzilla vs. Kong looked phenomenal. Maybe they’re adding an extra scene of Godzilla and Kong telling humanity to go to hell. Who knows, but we’ll be ready either way. We’re all stuck at home as the pandemic rages on, and it’s great to have something to look forward to, even if it’s a few days late. Plus, now we all have an excuse to revisit Godzilla, Kong: Skull Island, and Godzilla: King of the Monsters. So, all is not lost.

The best Amazon Prime movies

Amazon is right: You don't own your digital media

The best shows on Amazon Prime

New movies on Amazon Prime

There have been two sides to Warner Bros. hybrid release strategy. On one side are those who remain concerned about what the shift could mean for the theater industry, and on the other are those who believe we should let the past die and kill it if we have to.

But a factor that's being ignored by many consumers who want what they want when they want it is the very simple fact that movies cost money. And we're not talking a little money, either. These mega-blockbusters that folks are thrilled to watch on their screens at home without having to trudge out into a movie theater cost hundreds of millions of dollars to make. Those budgets won't exist should this hybrid release strategy become a regular thing among powerhouses like Warner Bros.

Legendary Entertainment, the production company that co-financed Dune and Godzilla vs. Kong, is putting forward a pretty strong reminder of that today. When the Warner Bros. news broke, it was rumored that the production company was not made aware that their films, both of which cost a pretty penny (Dune comes in at $175m with Godzilla vs. Kong hitting around $160m), would be released in theaters and on HBO Max at the same time.

The reason Legendary is considering legal action is because, with this strategy, those films won't likely gross a fraction of that money back, even considering international markets.

As of right now, sources close to Legendary say that they're hoping to have conversations with Warner Bros. - conversations that should have occurred well before any announcement was made. No legal challenges have been filed yet, but this hybrid release story appears to be far from over.

AMC strikes a deal on theatrical windows

Regal shuts down remaining theaters in New York and California

Theater owners continue to implore congress for aid

AMC and other exhibitors weren't aware of Warner Bros. hybrid release strategy
