With a cast featuring David Morrissey, Lesley Manville, Joanne Froggatt and a host of other big names, this drama is sure to be one of this year’s most memorable shows. Written by James Graham, the thought-provoking series takes us inside a Nottinghamshire village still deeply divided from the 1984 miners’ strike after it’s shattered by a pair of unexpected murders. This is so much more than another detective drama, especially for writer Graham, who grew up in these streets and has been waiting his whole life to tell this story about the battle for a community’s soul. Continues tomorrow.

Adopted as a baby, Judy, 64, has been searching for more than 20 years for her birth mum. Through her own investigations she knows her mum’s name is Gina and that she had another baby born five years after Judy. But that is where the trail goes cold, and now Judy is desperate for a new lead to finally answer her questions about her mother and possible half-sister. Also, in this first edition of a new run of the series, a family take up their late mum’s search for her younger brother after she passed away suddenly. Jacinta first contacted the show in 2017, but died before finding the little sibling who was always in her thoughts.

Bake Off: The Professionals, 8pm, C4

TV tonight No mere trifle: the hosts and judges

The remaining teams have a mountain to climb as their first task is to create 36 perfect Mont Blancs, a French dessert made from chestnut puree, meringue and whipped cream, which is meant to look like a mini snow-capped mountain. Their petit peaks must be served alongside a chocolate amenity (a decorative sculpture) in just three and a half hours. The Showpiece is to reimagine a classic dessert and turn it into a fine-dining masterpiece. The humble trifle also gets a makeover, and, as you can imagine, judges Cherish Finden and Benoit Blin expect a lot more than a few layers of soggy sponge covered in lashings of custard and cream.

Extraordinary Portraits, season 2, 8.30pm (times vary), BBC One

TV tonight Tinie is back to host.

It is an affecting idea: take a sitter with an amazing story, pair them with a portraitist and see how the experience changes them both. This second run begins with Harriet Middleton, a proud Shetlander who has used her knitting skills to buy an MRI scanner for the islands’ only hospital. She is matched with Stuart Pearson Wright, who is known for his sense of humour and breaking stereotypes. What joy awaits?

The delay between the first series of this acerbic yet warm-hearted comedy being shown in the US and the UK was such that it had already won a clutch of awards before being screened here. But it also means that fans haven’t had to wait too long for this second series, which sees veteran comedian Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and her chaotic twenty something joke-writer Ava (Hannah Einbinder) take to the road. Their relationship has never been better – but there’s a cloud hanging over them….

Best film to watch on TV today

Silence, 11.15pm, BBC Two

Martin Scorsese’s epic drama about missionaries in 17th-century Japan takes its time unfolding. It follows Jesuit priests Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver, as they travel to a feudal Japan in which Christianity has been outlawed, seeking to disprove reports that their mentor Liam Neeson has renounced his faith. The movie’s depiction of the priests’ many struggles is extraordinary.
