Gogglebox viewers were left in hysterics on Friday night as they watched OAPs Mary and Marina dissect a raunchy sex scene in the BBC period drama Gentleman Jack.

The pair were shown a scene in which Suranne Jones’ character Anne Lister – often described as the world’s “first modern lesbian” – is having sex with her on-screen lover.

But the scene perplexed Mary and Marina as they struggled to understand how lesbian sex works.

“What are they doing to each other then? Because I have never known what they actually did to each other,” Mary, 90, asked 83-year-old Marina.

“Nor me, I've never been in that situation myself,” Marina replied. “We've never lived, have we?" Mary quickly quipped back.

Some viewers at home found the pairs questions hilarious, with one tweeting: “Mary and Marina watching lesbian sex and saying they’ve never lived cause they’ve never been in that situation honestly 😂.”

Another said: “Mary and marina talking about lesbians is great damn.” While a third added: “Oh I bloody love #Gogglebox Mary & Marina talking about lesbians".

And a fourth said: “The two grandmas analyising this lesbian scene is utterly brilliant. ‘What are they doing?’ ‘I've never been in that situation’.”

Meanwhile, the BBC has already commissioned a second series of Gentleman Jack after its debut episode attracted an impressive 5.1million viewers.

On hearing the news that Gentleman Jack will be back, ex Coronation Street star Suranne said: “I’m so thrilled that I will be joining Sally Wainwright on the second part of Anne’s journey. We always dreamed there would be more and now we get to play it all out.

“A huge thank you to the BBC, HBO and Lookout Point for giving us our second series. It’s such amazing and positive news. I love working with the brilliant and talented Sophie Rundle [who plays Lister’s lover Ann Walker] and can’t wait to create some more Lister and Walker moments with her too.”
