Nicholas Lyndhurst says he's resigned to the fact that he will mainly be remembered for Only Fools and Horses.
Nicholas, who joins the cast of BBC1 crime drama New Tricks as ex-cop Dan Griffin next Tuesday, tells TV & Satellite Week that he knows his role as Rodney Trotter in the classic sitcom will always come before any other work he has done.
"It is so exciting to join New Tricks, but there is always going to be Only Fools and Horses, anyone who was in that came to that conclusion years ago, we're not silly," says Nicholas. "You are always going to have that first as the headline, but I think the sub-heading might be, 'Oh and he was in so and so too,' because we do other stuff. I have gone from the number one sitcom to the number one drama which is very flattering as an actor and hopefully I will be able to earn my stripes on New Tricks as well."
He's frequently recognised in the street, but says only certain people still call him a 'plonker'.
"It is almost exclusively journalists and scaffolders," he laughs. "Everyone else just says, 'Oh it’s you, I loved you', or 'My dad loved you' and now I am getting to the age where it's, 'Oh, my gran loved you!'"
