Andrew Hayden-Smith: Banana's a long way from Byker Grove! (VIDEO)

Former Doctor Who star Andrew Hayden-Smith will be getting his kit off for quite a few raunchy scenes as he plays mysterious Billy in new E4 series, Banana, which premieres this Thursday.

Banana is a groundbreaking show about gay, lesbian and trans characters in Manchester and a spin-off of C4's new drama, Cucumber, which follows the madcap adventures of middle-aged gay couple Henry and Lance (Vincent Franklin and Cyril Nri). Banana will be shown on E4 at 10pm, directly after Cucumber, every Thursday.

We spoke to Andrew about the change in pace from his first TV roles in Byker Grove and presenting on CBBC to the sex scenes in Banana.

He told What's on TV: "Back then I was just dealing with kissing scenes, which were pretty full on back then, when I was 14 or 15 years' old. To be honest I didn't even think about a career in acting... I was just getting on with it at the time. It was sort of a hobby I'd fallen into, so to still be doing that as a grown-up is fantastic. But yeah, they're completely different scenes, opposite ends of the spectrum!"

Nicholas Cannon
TV Content Director on TV Times, What's On TV and TV & Satellite Week

I'm a huge fan of television so I really have found the perfect job, as I've been writing about TV shows, films and interviewing major television, film and sports stars for over 25 years. I'm currently TV Content Director on What's On TV, TV Times, TV and Satellite Week magazines plus Whattowatch.com. I previously worked on Woman and Woman's Own in the 1990s. Outside of work I swim every morning, support Charlton Athletic football club and get nostalgic about TV shows Cagney & Lacey, I Claudius, Dallas and Tenko. I'm totally on top of everything good coming up too.
