BBC One is to follow the lead of many of its commercial rivals by launching a catch-up 'plus one' service.
The extra channel would give viewers better access to the corporation's prime channel, BBC director-general Tony Hall said.
Broadcasters such as ITV and Channel 4 have used the services - which rerun programmes an hour later - for a number of years.
Controller of BBC One Charlotte Moore said: "This is brilliant news for BBC One viewers - it means the content we pay for delivers even more value for audiences.
"In a world of increased choice, +1 will enable licence fee payers to have even more access to our broad range of programmes every day."
Details about the date for a launch will be announced at a future date.
Lord Hall - who was announcing a range of innovations - said: "Any plan for channels starts with BBC One. Above all, BBC One needs to be on top form. It has to be the nation's favourite channel, but also its bravest."

He said of the catch-up service: "It's what audiences expect, especially younger ones, and it means people can get more of what they've already paid for."
