I almost turned down The Voice, admits Ricky Wilson

Ricky Wilson has revealed that while he may be an integral part of The Voice UK's judging panel now, he originally turned down the chance to appear on the show.

The Kaiser Chiefs frontman - who along with fellow newcomer Kylie Minogue has quickly made his mark on the panel - was originally approached by producers before the first series started.

However he has admitted that he "asked too many questions" about the job - which ultimately went to Danny O'Donoghue from The Script.

"At the time, I was a bit snobby about those kind of shows. But the fact is, Saturday night, I'm not out in some bar in Hoxton. I'm watching The X Factor," he told Reveal magazine.

"I don't think I'd be a very good songwriter if I couldn't enjoy things that 99 per cent of the UK enjoys."

Ricky said his band "weren't 100 per cent comfortable" when he was offered the role again - but managed to persuade them on the basis that it would help to promote their new album Education Education Education, due for release in late March.

He also confessed that he liked the idea of being the first 'indie' star on the show.

"It's a game-changer, isn't it? If I was the second person ever to have done it, I'd probably have said no," he said.

The Voice UK continues on BBC One at 7pm on Saturday night.
