Comedian, actor, presenter and Sport Relief hero Eddie Izzard has successfully completed his epic challenge to run 27 marathons in 27 days.

The 54-year-old had needed to run a double marathon today after injury prevented him undertaking a marathon earlier on in the awesome feat of endurance.

Finishing beneath a giant statue of Nelson Mandela in Johannesburg, a clearly exhausted and emotional Eddie struggled to speak. "That was very, very tough," he told reporters as he swigged from a celebratory bottle of sparkling white wine.

"It's been the hardest thing I've ever done," said a "very tired" Eddie. "Thank you to everyone who has donated [and] don't do this at home."

Sport Relief confirmed the comedian's massive achievement had raised more than £1.35m for the charity appeal.

The 27 marathons were intended to reflect the 27 years Mr Mandela had spent in prison before becoming South Africa's first black president.

Eddie attempted a similar feat in South Africa in 2012 but had to pull out for health reasons. He was also anxious about finishing the challenge this time, as he revealed to Davina McCall, John Bishop and Claudia Winkleman via satellite from South Africa during Friday’s live Sport Relief broadcast.

Gary Lineker, marathon running legend Paula Radcliffe and DJ Chris Moyles are among those who have tweeted their congratulations.
