Secrets of Our Universe With Tim Peake, 9 pm, Channel 5

Astronaut Tim Peake, who spent six months on the International Space Station, presents this informative and accessible three-part exploration of our universe, looking at space missions, stars, black holes and, in this first episode, the planets. Major Tim makes an engaging and well-informed presenter as he looks at how life on Earth began, and how the planets have changed over billions of years. There’s plenty of fascinating material here, from how Saturn’s rings were formed to what happened to the Voyager 2 deep space probe, and some mind-blowing facts – for instance, did you know that there are more stars than there are grains of sand on Earth?!

Winning Hearts and Minds: Storyville, 10 pm, BBC Four

The Storyville strand is the place to go for documentaries that tell stories of international concern, and perhaps no film fulfils that brief more shockingly than this Danish exposé. Soldier-turned-filmmaker Martin Tamm Andersen and war correspondent Nagieb Khaja set out to understand why, following the Afghanistan War, Western troops and the newly established authorities were unable to win over local citizens. In Helmand Province, they find some sort of an answer when they investigate rumours of mistreatment and the abuse of young boys by the Afghan police, via interviews with the then chief of police, former military personnel based there and the alleged victims themselves.

Best box set on TV tonight

Mad Men, UKTV Play (box set)

Mad Men Jon Hamm

The brilliant period drama about a New York advertising agency, which originally aired on BBC Four, is available to stream for free on UKTV Play from today. It follows the fortunes of Sterling Cooper and its many incarnations, from the early 1960s to the early 1970s. In the role of genius ad man Don Draper, a character whose complicated history unfolds throughout the series, Jon Hamm became the breakout star, but it’s really an ensemble piece with a great cast including Elisabeth Moss, John Slattery, Christina Hendricks and Jared Harris. The recipient of numerous Emmys, BAFTAs and Golden Globes, it will no doubt remain a fixture on ‘greatest ever TV’ lists for many years to come (why not check where it placed on What To Watch's Top 100 TV shows list?).
