It’s fair to say Waterloo Road has had more heads than a monster from Greek mythology, and next week the show returns to our screens with yet another new headmaster, Vaughan Fitzgerald.

But if you can’t wait that long, check out this special trailer which reveals a punch-up between the pupils, an unexpected development in the relationship of teacher George Windsor (Angus Deayton) and scary dinner lady Carol Barry (Zoe Lucker), and the shock arrival of the new head’s ex-wife!

Neil Pearson, star of Drop the Dead Donkey and Bridget Jones’s Diary, has the honour of playing the long-running drama’s last ever principal, Vaughan, after the BBC announced earlier this year this will be the final series.

True to form Waterloo Road’s idealistic new head teacher has an extremely eventful first day as he takes over from recovering alcoholic Christine Mulgrew (EastEnders’ Laurie Brett). Other newcomers include Nicola Stephenson as his lover Allie Westbrook and Pooky Quesnel as his estranged-wife Olga.

The explosive opening episode screens on BBC1 at 8pm, Wednesday, October 15.
