EastEnders' Laurie Brett and Emmerdale's Michael Parr feature in British Soap Awards shortlist
The British Soap Awards have released their shortlist for the public voting categories – Best Actress, Best Actor and Best Soap – and the nominees feature a couple of minor surprises, with EastEnders' Laurie Brett and Emmerdale's Michael Parr among the contenders.
Michael has been a hit on the ITV soap, playing Ross Barton in a pivotal storyline around his ill-fated relationship with cancer sufferer Donna Windsor, while Laurie has been in and out of EastEnders during the past 12 months, although she was one of the outstanding performers during the soap's 30th anniversary celebrations in February.

The British Soap Awards will be held in Manchester on Saturday, May 16, and will be screened on ITV during the following week.
Patrick McLennan is a London-based journalist and documentary maker who has worked as a writer, sub-editor, digital editor and TV producer in the UK and New Zealand. His CV includes spells as a news producer at the BBC and TVNZ, as well as web editor for Time Inc UK. He has produced TV news and entertainment features on personalities as diverse as Nick Cave, Tom Hardy, Clive James, Jodie Marsh and Kevin Bacon and he co-produced and directed The Ponds, which has screened in UK cinemas, BBC Four and is currently available on Netflix.
An entertainment writer with a diverse taste in TV and film, he lists Seinfeld, The Sopranos, The Chase, The Thick of It and Detectorists among his favourite shows, but steers well clear of most sci-fi.
