'Roy and Hayley' sweep the boards at the British Soap Awards

Julie Hesmondhalgh and David Neilson have swept the board at this year's British Soap Awards.

The duo, who played much-loved couple Roy and Hayley Cropper in Coronation Street, won in every category they were nominated for - taking home a total of six awards.

Neilson won for Best Actor and Dramatic Performance, while Hesmondhalgh took home Best Actress. The pair jointly won for Best On-Screen Partnership, Best Storyline for Hayley's cancer and Best Single Episode for Hayley's death.

Meanwhile, for the first time in the British Soap Awards' history, Hollyoaks won the prestigious Best Soap gong.

For the sixth year in a row, Coronation Street's Michelle Keegan won Sexiest Female, while Hollyoaks' Danny Mac scooped Sexiest Male.

The good news kept coming for Hollyoaks, as Anna Passey took home the award for Villain of the Year and Ellis Hollins won for Best Young Performer.

Helen Worth was bestowed the Outstanding Achievement award, while Maddy Hill won Best Newcomer for her portrayal of Nancy Carter in EastEnders and Simon Gregson won Best Comedy Performance for Steve McDonald in Coronation Street.

However, it proved to be a difficult night for Emmerdale after the show's only managed to take home one award for Spectacular Scene of the Year.
