Steven Moffat has revealed his dream guest for Doctor Who – Bryan Cranston.

The writer said he would like the Emmy-winning Breaking Bad star to make a cameo appearance on the BBC1 sci-fi drama, which stars Peter Capaldi as the Time Lord.

“Bryan Cranston is brilliant. He should be in Doctor Who. Wouldn’t he be good?” Steven said.

“I don’t know if he’s even heard of Doctor Who, but wouldn’t he be good?”

The pair met at the 2014 Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles, where the Scottish TV producer picked up the prize for outstanding writing for a miniseries, movie or a dramatic special for Sherlock, but Steven didn’t tell the actor of his plan.

“I met him very, very briefly. I didn’t ask him to be in my show – I’m not that shameless,” he joked.

Bryan, best known for playing meth maker Walter White in Breaking Bad, next stars as Hollywood screenwriter Dalton Trumbo opposite Dame Helen Mirren in Trumbo.

Meanwhile, Steven was remaining tight-lipped over what fans can expect for the ninth series of Doctor Who.

The Doctor is joined by Jenna Coleman as his companion Clara Oswald, with guest appearances from Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams and Reece Shearsmith.

“There’s loads before the Christmas special. We’ve got 12 episodes to go with Daleks, Zygons, Vikings and Maisie Williams popping up in a very unexpected role,” teased Steven (pictured with Peter and Jenna).

Doctor Who returns to BBC1 on Saturday, September 19, 7.40pm.
